What do you do to teach your daughter about having a healthy body image?

0
0

Bethenny says, "I don’t believe in teaching kids at a young age about body image. I believe you should lead by example. I never talk about dieting, weight, how things fit or being bloated. I think kids should have a wide variety in their diet, including vegetables, greens and beans. Don’t deprive them of treats — but don’t focus on them, either."

Dad's "how-to" video series shames kids into replacing the toilet paper (VIDEO)

How to change TP

How to change TP

We've all been there as parents — so very tired of constantly telling the kids what to do and having the message fall on deaf ears. Father of two Will Reid had reached his limit and decided on a slightly different approach to getting their attention. He filmed his very own "how-to" video on YouTube, explaining to his two teens exactly how to change an empty roll of toilet paper, and his humorous twist has many parents around the world cheering him on. Uploaded a few days ago, the video has already racked up almost 700,000 views on YouTube, and the number is climbing.

"Obviously telling them face-to-face is not working," Reid says in his video, aimed directly at his own two teenage children, James and Beth, who apparently have fallen down on the job at home. "I've come up with the idea of using social media to try and reach you," he says as he starts the how-to instructions for changing the toilet paper roll.

"I know this is a difficult one," he warns his teens, "so pay attention."

Father giving instructions | Sheknows.com

As I watched Reid continue with detailed instructions for removing the empty roll and replacing it with a new one, I felt empowered. How many times have I given the same lecture to my own two kids, only to find another empty roll several days later? What if he created a whole series of these videos? My head was spinning with the possibilities. My kids are always on YouTube... This might be the best parenting invention ever.

Reid shares that this is only the first in a series of how-to instructional videos, and I personally can't wait for the rest. And in case he is looking for new topics, I recommend these three to start:

How to close the door when leaving the house

This might be a particularly difficult task to teach children unless you also yell the phrase, "Were you born in a barn?" while admonishing the kids for leaving said door wide open. Bonus points for video tips on how to close it without slamming or capturing the fingers of younger sibling in the doorjamb.

How to turn off the lights when leaving a room

Whether or not you have those fancy-pants bulbs that save energy, your kids need to learn to turn them off. It's a life skill, people. This video may require multiple mini lessons due to the number of different switches that exist. Caution: Young children should be taught that it is in fact OK to leave all lights on when teenage siblings have a "date" in the family room downstairs. If a sibling discovers that the teenager has mistakenly turned them off, the child is given full permission to turn them back on. All of them.

How to put away your crap

Kids have a lot of crap, most of which is usually lying around on the floor — especially LEGOs and other tiny stuff that causes nerve damage when stepped on by a parent or other unsuspecting adult. The solution would be to put it away, yet they seem incapable of doing this. This how-to video should include a warning that it takes Mom only 13 minutes and eight Hefty garbage bags to get rid of a room full of "treasures."

What do you think? Add your how-to video ideas in the comments, and help parents everywhere. Please.

Graphic novel Kill My Mother is Feiffer's noir masterpiece

0
0

Kill My Mother must have been a grand undertaking. The book itself is the size of a box of printer paper, and every page is covered with Feiffer's stunning four-color illustrations. That's not to mention a story that's like a roller-coaster ride through hell.

Meet Annie, a teenager whose policeman father was murdered, the suspect never caught. Her mother, Elsie, takes a job working for her dead husband's best pal, a drunken private investigator, in the hopes that together, they will find her husband's killer. Meanwhile (in classic film noir setup), a mysterious woman approaches the PI in search of her missing sister.

Fight Club 2: Why a comic book series is the perfect medium >>

Kill My Mother by Jules Feiffer

As time passes, we meet Annie's hopeless pal, Artie, who eventually becomes a World War II soldier. We meet an ex-boxer-turned-tap-dancer named Eddie Longo. The mysterious woman turns out to be Longo's gal, Mae, who wears the pants (and carries the gun) in their relationship. Finally, there's sexy movie star Hugh Patton, who develops a liking for Elsie.

The story culminates when our characters go on a USO tour on a war-torn South Pacific island. Let's just say everything goes to hell.

TRAILER: Sin City 2 rounds up the usual suspects >>

There is something truly Tarantino-esque about the imagery and plot line of Kill My Mother. A lot of people get murdered, and the characters are all at least a tad despicable. The difference? Tarantino rarely uses enough strong female characters. Feiffer's females are the strong. They are the most macho characters in the book.

Not only has Feiffer created women to root for, but he has created a story that will confound you until the very end, when you're bound to break out in a dark, victorious guffaw. Kill My Mother was inspired by Feiffer's love of films from the 1930s and '40s. This adoration comes through on the page, because as soon as you open the cover, you're there, in the story, fighting for your life.

Celebs weigh in: Fave comic book superhero (or villain)? >>

Feiffer is known for his long-run comic strip called Feiffer. He won the Pulitzer for his work with The Village Voice. He won an Academy Award for a short film called Munro. I can see why. He uses messy lines to create the perfect character expressions. His use of shading makes you look closely and pay attention. My favorite part, though? The way Feiffer draws death. The man has a knack for corpses.

In Kill My Mother, normal housewives go Dirty Harry. Whiney men get what's coming to them. Flaws are as interesting as positive attributes, and you're not entirely sure who you're rooting for. I guess you're rooting for Feiffer, because with this new graphic novel, he has added to a long list of award-worthy work.

But now that backpacks have been creeping into the high fashion realm the past few seasons and are poised to be one of fall's hottest trends, I'm considering giving them a second chance. With some of the hottest designers and celebrities showing off fun ways to style the typically casual look, you could say I'm a bit intrigued. While I'm deciding whether to jump back into the back-to-school-inspired style, I'll be taking inspiration from these stylish ladies.

Homemade horchata smoothie: You'll never drink it straight again

0
0

A traditional Latin drink made with rice, almonds and other grains, homemade horchata is one of the most sweet and simple drinks to throw together. It gets even better when you make it into a smoothie. My husband went nuts for this drink and, since it contains yogurt, I like to think it's even good enough for breakfast.

Horchata smoothie

1. Horchata smoothie recipe

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup horchata (recipe below)
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 cups ice
  • Whipped cream
  • Cinnamon

Directions:

  1. To a blender, add all the ingredients, and blend until smooth. If it's too thick, then simply add a little more horchata to thin it out.
  2. Top with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon.

2. Homemade horchata recipe

Yields 6 cups

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/3 cups long-grain white rice
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/3-2/3 cup superfine sugar (depending on desired sweetness level)

Directions:

  1. To a blender, add the rice and water. Blend just until the rice starts to break up.
  2. Let the rice and water sit overnight in the fridge.
  3. Strain the rice mixture over a cheesecloth into a pitcher. Throw away the rice.
  4. To the pitcher, add the milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract and desired amount of sugar.
  5. Chill, and serve cold.

Kate Hudson slams eating disorder rumors

0

In an interview with Red, the Bride Wars actress told the magazine, "If there is one thing I will never have, it is an eating disorder. I won't have girls — even if it is just one or two who care — thinking that. Because it is a serious sickness, not something to plaster on the cover of a magazine. And I am the opposite."

Kate Hudson doesn't pity ex-boyfriend Lance Armstrong >>

Hudson, who graces the cover of the magazine's October 2014 issue, went on to explain that she wants to send a positive message to women everywhere to love themselves and their bodies.

"I want girls to love themselves. I want them to feel good about who they are…The thing is, I'm lucky because I was loved. But I have seen so many young women who can't feel good about themselves because they just don't have… that love."

Kate Hudson, Matthew Bellamy working on relationship >>

The Wish I Was Here star also opened up about her romantic life and her relationship with Muse frontman Matt Bellamy — the father of her son Bingham — and whether or not we'll ever see the pair walk down the aisle.

"I'm not in a rush. We are basically married. It's really about when are we going to take the time to plan a wedding," she confessed to the mag.

"[I'm not wearing my engagement ring] because it can be… a little much. I like to wear my push gift [another ring] for pushing out Bing."

And to think, Hudson once thought she'd never date a musician again after her split from ex-husband and The Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson.

6 Ways essential oils can seriously harm you

0
0

Lately, the essential oil multi-level marketing industry has been booming. Thanks to social media, news of essential oils curing everything from migraines to eczema spreads quickly. Essential oils do have incredibly powerful therapeutic properties, and there are plenty of medical studies to back that up. But, just because they're derived from plants doesn't mean they're totally safe. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind before you take a friend's word for it and use essential oils on yourself, your children or your pets.

1. Skin discoloration, burning and sores

Some essential oils can cause you to burn in the sunlight. Before you head out to the beach or to a tanning booth, make sure you don't have a photosensitizing oil on your skin. Reactions can range from discoloration to oozing burns. Did your friend selling oils mention that?

2. Danger to babies and pregnant women

Babies, pregnant women and breastfeeding women should use extreme caution. When dealing with babies, kids, pregnant women and breastfeeding women, oils should be heavily diluted — such as one percent of essential oil in a safe carrier oil, like coconut oil. Rosemary and spike lavender should never be used on pregnant women, even diluted. Don't use oils at all on babies under one year of age. Your safest bet is to stick to products made specifically for babies and pregnant women instead of making something on your own or using undiluted oils.

3. Skin irritation and itching

A drop of peppermint oil on the back of your neck can help a headache — or it can cause serious skin irritation. Many oils irritate the skin when applied undiluted. Do a small spot test before applying oils to your skin, even when they're diluted in a moisturizing carrier oil. Don't assume that every oil is safe to apply directly to your skin.

4. Danger to small pets

Essential oils aren't safe for pets. Unless you own a very large animal, like a horse, don't try using essential oils on your pets. Only use essential oil products under the supervision of your vet.

5. Dangerous interactions with preexisting conditions

Even inhaling some oils can cause side effects for people with health problems. Don't use oils on people with preexisting conditions like asthma or heart problems unless you're working with a trained aromatherapist. Aromatherapy training involves 200 or more hours of classes, and includes studying chemistry and drug interactions. Don't take your friend's word for it just because she's selling oils.

6. Illness or death when swallowed

Really hardcore essential oil enthusiasts take oils orally. This isn't something an everyday essential oil fan should try. Oils like pennyroyal and wintergreen can be fatal if swallowed. Some toxic oils can cause miscarriage when swallowed. Others can become highly irritating when they've been kept on the shelf too long. Skip oral use unless you're using oils under the supervision of a medical professional.

Don't be afraid to use essential oils, but use them wisely. Always keep oils out of the reach of children. Treat them as you would any type of medicine. Research any essential oils and blends before you use them — as with drugs, oils have different chemical makeups and different potential side effects. If you're nervous, start simply with a diffuser. You can enjoy many of the benefits of essential oils without having to use them directly on your body.

The Orange Is the New Black actress' alleged stalker Jeanine Heller was arrested again on Tuesday morning after allegedly violating an order of protection stemming from her initial stalking and harassment case against the actress, E! News reports.

Actress Taryn Manning arrested for assault on her assistant >>

The New York City Police Department has confirmed that Heller was arrested after she violated an order of protection by emailing and calling the actress. In fact, she was charged on one count of criminal contempt in the second degree.

"The persistent and relentless violations of Ms. Manning's privacy by Ms. Heller have caused Ms. Manning and her family tremendous concern for their safety and well-being," Manning's lawyer, Andrew C. Quinn, told E! News in a statement. "Ms. Manning will continue to work with investigators and attorneys in the New York County District Attorney's Office in furtherance of this matter."

INTERVIEW: OITNB's Taryn Manning talks "getting weird" and Season 2 >>

Manning pressed stalking charges against Heller in July, claiming that her former friend had sent her hundreds of texts, emails and phone calls over the course of a few months in an attempt to make the actress paranoid, TMZ reports.

An order of protection was issued for the A Lot Like Love actress, her mother and her dog, Penguin.

Heller was previously arrested in July and charged with stalking in the fourth degree and later released without bail.

Heller now remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned as early as Tuesday evening, but the story is still developing.

Geena Davis: Extreme Parenting

Geena Davis presents as one cool customer, but this proud celebrity mom admits to having one major failing as a parent: She can get a little, uh, too involved in the arts and crafts projects she does with her children. We've all been there, where we're totally all about building this awesome fort with the kiddo but he's already moved on to the next game. This happens, and it can be hilarious. But Davis freely admits that she takes things to the extreme.

She's known in her family for making elaborate (and probably delicious) birthday cakes. Unfortunately, she's also known for totally ignoring the birthday kid... in favor of perfecting the cake! This is an easy one to laugh off, but imagine your mom totally dissing you on your birthday when you were a kid because she was obsessed with perfecting a pavlova or something? That would have been heartbreaking. Geena: Buy an ice cream cake and go hang out with your kids.

REVIEW: 3 Things we love about Red Band Society (and 1 we hate)

0
0

REVIEW: Our Selfie pilot snap judgment >>

Comparing it to The Fault in Our Stars is too easy, really. Red Band Society belongs to the same family of teen shows like Freaks and Geeks and Friday Night Lights, something beyond a soap opera and more than pretty rich teenagers inventing new ways to get drunk and sleep with each other. It's saying something authentic about the teenage experience in a way we haven't seen it before. It's unique. It's a standout amidst a TV season of recycled ideas and clever gimmicks that would have worked better as movies. Even the voice-over isn't obnoxious.

There's so much to love, and there's just one thing we'd nitpick, so let's break it down.

It's not in love with its own cleverness

Sure, the kids are quippy, but that's de rigueur among both teen dramas and actual teens these days. They're patients in a long-term hospital care. Some of them are facing the possibility of being terminal cases. They deflect with sarcasm and witty banter, but not to the point where it distracts from the genuine moments that come later. They're not walking one-liners, and it means that scenes where Leo (Charlie Rowe) fiercely promises Jordi (Nolan Sotillo) that his leg removal surgery won't change who he is as a person, or when Jordi asks Emma (Ciara Bravo) to be his last dance on two legs really land. They're teenagers, they joke around, but there's a beautiful sincerity that's still reflective in almost all of them.

Outlander review: First look at the dazzling time-travel romance >>

Mental illness is treated with the same gravity as the physical kind

Emma's eating disorder is demonstrated as being every bit as valid of a reason for her long-term stay in pediatrics as Leo's cancer or Charlie's coma. It's a refreshing approach, to say the least. Emma's insistence that she doesn't do drugs, drink or smoke is an especially poignant moment. Control is so important to her, and we see how deeply it frustrates her to not be able to just conquer her demons when she's so clever at both schoolwork and pulling one over on adults.

Octavia Spencer, Octavia Spencer, Octavia Spencer

She shines as gruff Nurse Jackson, whose takeout coffee cup reads "Scary B****," a moniker she wears with pride. She's deeply invested in the patients she cares about, she puts up with no nonsense, and she doesn't suffer fools, but underneath that, she's got a soft heart. She's been working in Pediatrics a long time, clearly long enough to see a lot of patients come and go, and not all of them get better. We see that it's taken a toll on her, but it hasn't damaged her ability to, as she puts it, "make an investment" in a handful of favorite patients, with a sixth sense for knowing when her favorites are up to no good.

However, there's one thing we think Red Band Society could work on in a big way.

Ready for fall TV? A comprehensive calendar of new and returning shows in 2014 >>

Kara Souders

While Zoe Levin is great in the role and gives a few small glimpses of humanity into the bitter, nasty shell of a girl that Kara comes off as, there's something about Kara that hasn't quite gelled with the rest of the cast yet. Some of that's to be expected. She is, after all, the new kid on the ward, but some of it makes her feel as though she's stepped out of a different show entirely.

Specifically, some of her dialogue and character beats make her feel like she's a transplant straight from the first season of Glee. Her jokes are more cruel than clever, the weird Osama bin Ladin Halloween costume is straight out of the Sue Sylvester playbook and it doesn't help that the opening scene of the pilot is incredibly reminiscent of Glee's series opener, too. She's the one piece that doesn't match the rest of the series' tone.

Overall, though, the pilot is fantastic. Heartfelt without being cloyingly sentimental, hilarious without being too breezy, and wholly human. We're on board for the whole season.

Red Band Society premieres Sept. 17 on Fox.

Snooki's son and JWoww's daughter get their first play date

The moms arranged the first play date for Snooki's son Lorenzo Dominic, 2, and Farley's 1-month-old daughter Meilani Alexandra over the weekend. While the two tots couldn't actually play together given the age difference, they did look totally adorable together.

Farley shared a picture on her Instagram on Saturday of her daughter, whom she shares with fiancé Roger Mathews, and Lorenzo lovingly looking over her, with the caption, "Counting toes."

While counting toes may have been the extent of the tots playing together, we're sure they will have plenty of opportunities for more play dates in the future when Meilani is a little older as long as they never intend to date!

Why Snooki doesn't want her son dating JWoww's daughter >>

"I feel like it would be weird if they hooked up or started dating," Polizzi previously told People. "Jenni and Roger are so tall that their girl is going to be six feet [tall] and Lorenzo is going to be so short because me and Jionni [LaValle] are so short."

"So if I had a girl and Jenni had a boy, that would work, but I also want to grow them up as cousins so it will be weird if they slept together," she said. "I mean, I wouldn't be mad, because I'll just beat Jenni's ass."

But the play date was most probably good practice for Snooki's son Lorenzo because he'll soon have a baby sister.

Shakira has kept a low profile since announcing the baby news. She was last spotted in July at the World Cup Closing Ceremonies wearing black jeans, a loose-fitting top and a blazer — you know, the perfect outfit to conceal a baby bump.

A source revealed to E! News on Tuesday that Bernal has been telling people that he and his Argentine-born wife have split up. He went on to say he has been spending time in both his native Mexico and his wife's home country of Argentina, where she lives with their two children.

Apparently, the split was also confirmed last week by the actor's mother, Patricia Bernal, who broke the news to People en Español. While the Latin Post reports that Bernal has been traveling a lot, which is said to have driven a wedge between the couple, his wife is also an actress with a busy schedule, so she is unable to travel with him.

Bernal will star as the lead character in the based-on-a-true-story film centered on a journalist named Maziar Bahari, who is detained in Iran and interrogated in prison.

The California club pizza: your favorite sandwich transformed

I make a lot of pizzas each month, and I finally hit the nail on the head with this one. It involves a lot of my favorite ingredients added onto one piping-hot crust. I mean, it's cheese and bacon, with a little bit of avocado thrown into the mix. Nobody is going to be displeased with this combo — it's a California club transformed as a pizza.

Why Jon Stewart's new film Rosewater is a real-life horror movie

Journalist Maziar Bahari (Gael García Bernal) traveled to Iran to cover the country's presidential election. While there, he was held hostage and brutally interrogated at Evin Prison. Bahari was almost always blindfolded while being questioned and could identify his interrogator by his distinctive scent — rose water.

Jon Stewart needs your $10 billion to help him buy CNN >>

Muslim chemists began producing rose water hundreds of years ago and have continued to use the sweet-smelling rose petal solution for many purposes, such as a flavoring in food and also as a topical medicine. It's not a scent we normally associate with kidnappers, so it's ironic that a floral smell is associated with the terrible events depicted in the film.

Based on the book Then They Came for Me by Bahari and his wife, Aimee Molloy, Rosewater the movie is a chilling look at one man's real-life journey. But as frightening as it is, The Daily Show's Stewart still found ways to give the story some levity.

Daily Show creator faces backlash over tornado tweet >>

In the trailer, Bahari is asked about his connection to Anton Chekhov. Bahari asks, "You mean the playwright?" His captor demands to know who this Anton Chekhov is and why he's listed as one of his interests on Facebook. Of course, Chekhov himself would find this terribly funny, but Bahari certainly did not.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Iranian government has claimed Jon Stewart's film Rosewater was funded by the 'Zionist lobby' and the CIA."

To which Stewart replied, "I guess I'm still waiting for the money. I must have sold myself too cheaply," and that, "It's just sad."

We think it's sad, too. Can't we all just get along?

What to do when you disagree with your student's teacher

0
0

Every parent hopes that her child's experience in school will be a pleasant one. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Your student may struggle with a particular academic subject, such as English or math, or she may have a teacher that your family does not see eye-to-eye with. When the latter situation occurs, it can be extremely stressful, and it can also negatively impact your child's opinion of school. So, how do you deal with this sensitive situation? Below is a four-step guide to responding to your student's teacher when you do not agree with his or her behavior or decisions.

Remain calm

You love your student, and when she claims that her teacher assigned her an undeserved grade or was unkind to her, it is simple to become agitated or angry. For the sake of your child, resist this impulse, especially if she is present in the room. Your response may affect her perception of her teacher, or even worse, of school as a whole. Only the most serious of complaints result in classroom changes, so it is important to avoid behaviors that may negatively impact your daughter's enjoyment of the remainder of the school year.

Review classroom documentation

Before you contact anyone at your student's school, gather any past communications from her teacher. These may include explanations of classroom procedures, homework policies, etc. Occasionally, conflict with a teacher stems from simple miscommunication. Perhaps your child was absent when the teacher stated that she does not accept late work. Perhaps your child forgot a rule when lining up for gym class. Consider re-reading these documents with your student. Ask her to elaborate on her experience with her teacher (i.e. request that she share specifics), and then, if confusion still remains, politely reach out to your child's teacher to discuss the situation.

Schedule an in-person conversation

The term conversation is key here. If you feel it is necessary to speak to your student's teacher, ensure you do so in person (an email or the telephone can contribute to misunderstandings). Also ensure that you recognize that this is a dialogue. This is not an interrogation or a performance review. You and the teacher are partners in your child's education, and a calm, rational discussion is more likely to reap results than an argumentative one. Approach the teacher with a phrase like, "I hope you can help me understand... " rather than, "My student says you did... "

Assess potential next steps

Was your in-person conversation with your child's teacher productive? If so, commit to remaining in close contact with him or her. Relationships require weeks or months to cultivate, and a strong relationship with your student's teacher is the best defense against future issues. However, if you feel that your discussion was ineffective, only now is it possibly appropriate to contact your child's vice principal or principal. If it is in your student's best interest to escalate your concerns, do so, but take care to avoid acting rashly.

Kim Kardashian is "Woman of the Year"? It's official, the end is near

0
0

There are so many terrible, depressing things going on in our world right now — beheadings by extremists, racial tensions in the South, the spread of deadly viruses, age-old conflicts in the Middle East. It makes a gal wonder how much longer our societies can function under the constant umbrella of sadness, violence and disregard for human life and one another.

Kim Kardashian bares all in GQ spread >>

As if to prove that nothing matters, and nothing is sacred anymore, Kim Kardashian has been named "Woman of the Year" by British GQ. Just let that sink in for a minute. Why, you ask? Is it for Kardashian's charity work? No. Is it because she tirelessly dedicates her talents for the betterment of mankind? Nope. Is it because she — in any appreciable, measurable way — makes the world a better place? No.

Kim K finally opens up about her wedding fight with Rob >>

According to British GQ editor Dylan Jones, Kardashian won because, "She is quite simply one of the most famous women in the world ... She's glamorous, omnipotent and beautiful. She's properly Coca-Cola famous."

Kim and Kanye are dropping $20 million on their new pad >>

If we take a few moments to dissect this, Kardashian is famous for a "leaked" sex tape, for showing off her freakishly large backside every chance she gets, for wearing designer clothes, for marrying one of the most offensive mouths in pop culture — Kanye West — (after two other failed marriages before the age of 30), and for exploiting private family moments on reality television.

There you go, daughters and young women everywhere. The aforementioned are behaviors that we don't just endorse and embrace, we now celebrate them with titles like "Woman of the Year" — titles that were previously reserved for acts that were meaningful and helped to advance society in a compelling way. Now you need only achieve brand recognition similar to that of Coca-Cola.

Kardashian (who corrected Jones upon accepting the award by reminding him that her last name is "West" — and yes, I'm deliberately not using that name out of spite) celebrated her prestigious award with a nude photo layout. That makes complete sense since we have become a culture that achieves obnoxious wealth and notoriety by offering up our most private moments for mass consumption.

Am I the only woman who is incredibly offended that this woman celebrated this "honor" by taking her clothes off? Shouldn't women everywhere take issue with our personal value being attached to nudity, which says nothing about intellect, talent or kindness and generosity of spirit?

This is a woman who told her sisters, "As soon as I pop this thing out — as soon as I get in shape — the first thing I want to do is Playboy or some nude shoot. I just wanna walk down the street fully naked. I'm gonna be the sexy, hot mom." Lucky little North West. Isn't this what every young mother should aspire to? There's no mention of, "I want to be the best mom to my new baby that I can" or "I want to parent North in a way that helps her become a productive member of society." All this narcissistic, vainglorious "Woman of the Year" wants is to be the "sexy, hot mom."

The silver lining in this cloud is that the end is undeniably upon us. Cash out your retirement accounts and live life like you're not sure about tomorrow. We can say with certain confidence that if someone like Kim Kardashian is being given "Woman of the Year" honors, life as we know it, or would like to know it, no longer exists.

Smelly passengers are worse than crying babies on airplanes

A 27-year-old Frenchman has filed a discrimination lawsuit against American Airlines for kicking him off of a Dallas-bound plane in Paris, France. The Algerian-born passenger who “dreamed of visiting the U.S.” was kempt and sober; he also smelled strongly of cologne that he had sprayed on himself in the Duty Free shop in the airport. Because of his overpowering aroma, other passengers complained.

After getting up from his seat to use the restroom, the man was told by a flight attendant, “The crew and the passengers are complaining about the unpleasant odor you exude. The aircraft commander has a right to deny you a flight.” He was reportedly asked to “take a shower” and get off the plane.

I am the first person to say that I am easily annoyed by other passengers on a plane; I am only human. I try my best to keep my irritating thoughts to myself, but when I am sandwiched next to a person with a strong perfume, I teeter on the edge of sanity — and nausea.

The funny thing is that on most flights, crying babies get the bad rap. Just a few years ago, a toddler was kicked off a flight with his father because he was crying and would not stay buckled in his seat. As a parent, this is something I worry about when I plan to fly with my toddlers. No one wants to sit next to a crying baby — not even parents — but it’s impossible to predict how your kids will act on a plane.

Most of the time, parents spend the entire flight trying to keep their kids happy and quiet, while other annoying passengers run amok — like the Chatty Cathy, the person who falls asleep on your shoulder or the person whose overpowering perfume gives you a blinding headache.

It was unfair that this man was kicked off a flight just because he was a little heavy-handed with the cologne, but as a parent who has frequently been in the position of taming an unruly child in public, I appreciate that crying babies aren’t the only target on a plane.

The next time I fly, I promise to bring the iPad, headphones and snacks to shut my kids up if you promise to skip the cologne.

The classmates who dumped a bucket of body waste on a teen with autism deserve jail time

0

We can all agree the Ice Bucket challenge for ALS is a fantastic charity event that has raised money for an excellent cause, but it was just a matter of time before someone ruined it with a vile, cruel prank. If this story reported is true, I hope the teens involved get jail time. According to Pix11.com, classmates of a teen boy with autism lured him into taking the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS and instead of freezing water, filled the bucket with feces, urine, spit and cigarette butts. The teen boy's parents discovered the video on his cell phone and reported it to local police. According to the 15-year-old boy's mother, who does not wish to be identified, the classmates videotaped the incident and then posted it to Instagram. Police are now investigating with the cooperation of the school.

ALS ice bucket prank

ALS ice bucket prank

You can never underestimate the cruelty of teenagers, but there is something especially insidious about kids who thought taking a fun charity event and coming up with this repulsive plot — plus including a teen with autism in their plans — was a good idea. I'm hoping the parents of the teens involved are happy they raised such disgusting human beings, and I hope there is some sort of criminal punishment towards these jerks once the police complete their investigation. I have no idea what went through their minds when they decided to pull this prank, and I have no desire to. It's some sort of Carrie mentality going on here, instead of pig's blood substitution human waste. I feel so awful for this family and this young man. Watching the mom is heartbreaking, and I hope this family gets justice for this crime.
