In the wake of Ferguson riots, I'm teaching my kids to trust the police

$

As Mike Brown and a friend walked down the streets of their St. Louis suburb on Aug. 9, 2014, the 18-year-old was shot by a police officer during a struggle between the officer and Brown. The investigation shows that Brown was unarmed at the time of the shooting, but also states that the victim reached for the officer's gun which ultimately resulted in his death. And, no surprise, the community is ticked off.

By the next day, Brown's parents retained Benjamin Crump, the same attorney who represented Trayvon Martin's family. And by that evening, a candlelight vigil turned violent with vandalism and looting, affecting more than a dozen of businesses within the community. So how can I look my kids in the eyes and tell them to feel bad for the people who are justifying violence in their own neighborhood as a solution to a tragic situation?

In circumstances like in Ferguson that incite cries of racism and pit local law enforcement against the community, no one wins. But, when violent protests demanding justice for Michael Brown and death threats to police officers keep kids from attending the first day of school, I say that the fools crying, "no justice, no peace" have no one to blame but themselves for the police violence.

Now, I'm not saying I know any more about the case than the media has released — there are still a lot of unknowns to be investigated when it comes to the Mike Brown case. And being a police officer doesn't give anyone justification to use unnecessary violence, either. The sad truth is that the world is full of violence, mistakes, bad judgment and tragedy. And kids shouldn't be taught, especially by bad example, to label all law enforcement as bad and the people breaking the law — regardless of why — as the victims. In this case the Ferguson protesters are out of line.

I hope that the accurate facts are revealed in the Mike Brown case — his family deserves to have that information. But regardless of the facts, when my kids turn to me and ask who the good guys really are? I'm going to make sure they know that the police officers, the people who put their lives at risk every day to keep our city safe, are always the heroes to turn to if my kids are ever in need of help. With positive guidance and a hellofa effort to help my kids learn to keep their noses clean they may never have to experience what the community of Ferguson is going through.

Disagree with Michelle? So did Crystal Brown. See what she had to say about it here.

Man accidentally shoots himself while posing for selfie with a gun

Moments later, he was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aguilar's Facebook feed was full of candid shots of himself with hot cars and bottles of booze, his face beaming with pride at the fun he was having. Little did he know it would one day lead to his own demise, the arrest of his friend, Omar Abner Campos Vives and send his other cohort, "El Paco" on the run from authorities.

But before you chalk this up to an ill-advised stunt gone wrong, you should know that deaths by accidental shootings are anything but uncommon. Accidental shootings claim the lives of 100 boys and girls under 14 every year, according to The Guardian. And just like Aguilar, the casualties aren't always kids. Take this story also from this week about an off-duty police officer who accidentally shot himself and his 3-year-old son on Long Island, NY. This isn't some novice, this is a trained law enforcement official. Or UFC fighter Joe Riggs who had to bow out of his latest fight after shooting himself in the thigh on July 28 while cleaning his gun. These are all incidents from the past few weeks.

The story of Aguilar and his 21-year-old life cut short is tragic. It's compounded by the fact that it will happen again, sooner rather than later. In the meantime, let's stick to selfies filled with duck lips and peace signs and leave the firearms in their holster.

He said to Conan O'Brien, "I believe so. Yes. I just talked to Jerry Bruckheimer. He said it's real, they're working on a script, they're close and it all looks good."

Now, the real question is if his on-screen partner-in-crime, Will Smith, will return. Lawrence played Detective Marcus Burnett and Smith played Detective Mike Lowrey in the 1995 film and its 2003 sequel. The original film was the directorial debut of powerhouse filmmaker, Michael Bay.

Lawrence must have known there was a script in the works, because he teased a sequel in mid-July to his fans on Twitter.

Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence: New odd couple? >>

That certainly is a dramatic switch from his 1999 jogging incident when he slipped into a coma for three days after exercising in excessive heat under layers of clothing.

Lawrence advised, "Oh no, I don't do that no more, I did that and I went into a coma and passed out so please, I recommend, 'Do not run in a plastic suit.' Do not do that."

The actor is currently starring with Kelsey Grammer in Partners, a new sitcom on FX, about two lawyers who form an unlikely friendship. The series debuted on Aug. 4. and if it is successful during its 10-episode season, the network will order an additional 90 episodes.

Lauren Conrad has some advice for her 18-year-old self

Today, Conrad is 28 years old, she's praised for her style, she's a best-selling author, a fashion designer and her personal life is going pretty great, too.

Lauren Conrad's teenage dream boy was Justin Timberlake >>

Thinking back, Conrad decided to write a letter to her 18-year-old self.

"In light of my 10-year reunion, I've been doing a little reflecting," she started the letter, which is featured on her personal blog, along with a picture of the old Laguna Beach cast. "Well, 18-year-old Lauren, here's my advice…"

Conrad made a list of three points: Wear sunscreen, enjoy being young and be an individual.

Lauren Conrad's pre-wedding plan: No dieting or exercise >>

The blonde beauty started off by explaining how she previously wanted to be tanned so badly, that she didn't think twice about sun damage, but she also didn't appreciate just being young.

"When I was 18, I was in a hurry to grow up. Instead, I wish I would have taken a beat to just enjoy being young. So many things are new when you're that age and the level of responsibility is still low," she confessed.

What's the one hair color you'll never see on Lauren Conrad? >>

Lastly, Conrad wished that she'd been more of an individual during her teens, explaining how, for so many years, she had the same friends and was stuck in the same environment, that when it all changed she should have been even more independent in her decisions.

"Then, for the first time you get to go off on your own and make real, conscious decisions about where you want life to take you," she wrote. "You get to choose your school, your major, and what kind of person you'll become. So when you're making these decisions, be an individual. It's the best way to discover who you really are."

Erin Andrews is returning to Dancing With the Stars >>

"I've never done it, but I'm curious about all of it. I've seen great work, and I think we've all seen bad," Andrews told Health magazine. "I'm sure there will be a time in my life when I'll want to look into it, but it's just not right now."

Andrews not only deals with having to look good on the air, but also with the added invasion of privacy social media offers, and she sees a lot of backlash over photos she posts.

"I recently Tweeted a photo of a David Yurman ring I was wearing, and I didn't have any moisturizer on, and they were like, 'Your hands look like the old lady from Titanic. But you know what? This is coming from a person whose avatar is a cat. So what do you want from me?"

Although she tries not to let it get to her, she said, "It's hard when somebody says something and you want to put them in their spot," she said of her Twitter haters. "I've gotten 'You look like Brad Pitt' or that I look like a bird, and I'm just like, 'Really?'"

Brooke Burke-Charvet: Erin Andrews bad choice for DWTS >>

Andrews grew up in a sports family and she recently replaced Pam Oliver on the Fox sidelines. Despite the haters, she said she is proud to have built the career she has, but she never realized being a woman in sports would be such a big deal.

"I didn't even think about it until I was in the industry and people started bringing it up," she said. "I always saw so many women do it on television. Hannah Storm, who did NBA on NBC, was a big influence. Monday Night Football's Melissa Stark showed that it was OK to be, like, really good-looking and know everything about the NFL. The first time I met her face-to-face, I geeked out and told her she was my Michael Jordan."

New evidence just revealed by Gainesville, Florida, detective Matt Goeckel during the trial shows on the day of the murder, Bravo turned to the Siri feature on his iPhone and searched, "I need to hide my roommate."

Siri replied in an uncharacteristically helpful way: "What kind of place are you looking for? Swamps. Reservoirs. Metal foundries. Dumps."

The report adds that Gainesville police have evidence the exchange took place on the day Aguilar disappeared, Sept. 20, 2012. The trial should wrap up this week.

But that begs the question, what's the weirdest question you've ever asked Siri? How do I get footprints off of the interior roof of the car? How long does it take to digest 14 pieces of salt water taffy? Give us your best one.

Lifetime is producing unauthorized Brittany Murphy biopic

The network announced on Tuesday that it is releasing a two-hour movie special about Brittany Murphy, according to Entertainment Tonight. The Brittany Murphy Story will air on Saturday, Sept. 6 and stars Grey's Anatomy actress, Amanda Fuller, in the title role. Sherilyn Fenn will portray Murphy's mother, Sharon Murphy.

The film will follow Brittany's career launch as a child, through to her untimely death. Sharon has not cooperated with Lifetime in the making of the film or offered any of her own insight, according to the Hollywood Reporter, via ET.

Brittany died suddenly in 2009 at the age of 32. An autopsy stated the official cause of death was cardiac arrest and Brittany had been suffering from what was thought to be a respiratory infection for about a week prior to passing. According to notes from an investigator at the coroner's office, she "had been complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain" about a week before dying. A toxicology report found that Brittany had numerous drugs in her system at the time of death, but none were illegal. The coroner also stated that Brittany's respiratory infection was most likely actually acute pneumonia and her condition was compounded by the large amount of medications present in her body.

The actress's husband, Simon Monjack, was found dead just five months after Brittany's passing and the conditions of his death were very similar to his wife's. Monjack's sudden death gave rise to conspiracy death theories, some saying that both Brittany and Monjack fell victim to an intentional poisoning and that the couple had been killed by the government. Sharon denies the sinister claims and says that Brittany and Monjack's deaths were caused by toxic mold in the couple's Los Angeles home.

"Her [Brittany's] desperation for approval and insecurity about her looks makes her personal life a disaster," Lifetime said in a statement about the movie. "Unlike other stage moms, Sharon was always her daughter's support system, but that enduring love wasn't enough to save her sensitive Brittany from the vicissitudes of Hollywood life."

The Giver book vs. movie: 8 Reasons the movie is far better than the book >>

"It was a small supporting role, but how could I possibly turn down the opportunity to work with Meryl?" he told People.

In the end, the True Blood star was never able to meet the actress because of their tight shooting schedules, even though they share a scene. But Skarsgård is still thrilled to have been given the chance.

"We were never able to overlap, so that was quite disappointing," he said. "But I'm still in the same movie as Meryl Streep!"

The Giver also stars Jeff Bridges, Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift, and was an important opportunity for Skarsgård.

"It was definitely a character I hadn't played before," Skarsgård said. "Every year, when we wrap up a season [of True Blood], I look for things that are different from Eric Northman. It was a real challenge because he is a character who does horrendous things, but that said, he's not a bad guy. He just doesn't know any better."

INTERVIEW: What The Giver author Lois Lowry really thought about Meryl Streep as Chief Elder >>

Despite rumors Skarsgård and co-star Katie Holmes are dating, he confirmed they are just good friends. The actor did say, though, that the rest of the cast became close and Bridges made it a social event. For the actor, that environment helped him with his role.

"All that kind of stuff is so important, especially when you play a character that's quite difficult," he adds. "It was really nice on weekends to hang out with the cast and crew and Jeff, he was the anchor of the group."

The Giver opens in theaters on Friday, Aug. 15.

I get excited about casseroles — an entire meal all in one pretty baking dish, limited pots and pans to clean up and easy serving. It also helps that they're usually decadently delicious, and this one is no exception.

  5. Toss together, and then transfer to a baking dish.

North West travels with nannies, not Kim and Kanye >>

North West is pictured in a white cardigan sweater with a black Chanel broach pinned to the front and has a classic quilted Chanel handbag draped at her tiny little feet. She is very photogenic, though her face doesn't exactly reflect that she's having fun, and there's a caption that reads, "North West The Future," with a quote from iconic designer, Karl Lagerfeld, that says, "It's never too early to care about fashion!"

While we agree that it's every person's right to express themselves through fashion, it seems over the top to adorn such a small child in high-end clothing. Babies drool, they spit up, they grow like weeds, they pee on things. How do you explain to a 1-year-old that they can't pick at the pretty flower on their shirt, or get any saliva on the lambskin purse that's sitting in their lap? While Kardashian may care greatly about fashion, it's a little hard to believe that it's the first thing on North's mind when she wakes up in the morning.

There are bags similar to the one pictured with North on Chanel.com that retail anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000. According to the UNICEF website, you can feed a baby in a developing country for a year for about $900. Something here doesn't quite add up.

Wastefulness aside, we also have to wonder how North of the future will feel about the plethora of photos that are being taken of her in her youth, before she is able to consent.

In an interview with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb earlier this week, Kardashian said, "North has already mastered her own signature pose. Every time there is a camera out and paparazzi, she does this either mean, angry Kanye face or a pose." It's interesting that Kardashian is under the impression that North's "Kanye face" is intentional, when we wonder if the baby might just need a fresh diaper or possibly didn't inherit her mother's love of the paparazzi. As for North's non-angry perceived posing for the paps, we guess it would only be natural that she has an idea of what to do when a camera appears, considering she probably witnesses her mother pose for 100 selfies a day, give or take a few.

With so many celebs fighting to keep media and paparazzi attention away from their little ones, it's hard to understand what Kardashian and Kanye want to get out of forcing the limelight on their baby.

Channing Tatum and Kristen Bell refuse to make a profit off their children and are doing everything in their power to keep their lives private. After all, if your child isn't old enough to speak, they can't voice whether they want their image projected to thousands of people, or even if the designer clothing they're wearing meets their well-developed, early onset fashion sense.

Reports claim Tallulah Willis has secretly entered rehab >>

According to a family friend, Willis' parents, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, insisted that Tallulah seek help just before she entered rehab.

"Tallulah was pretty much given an ultimatum," the source told People. "Her parents were about to take away everything from her."

The family friend added that the 20-year-old was affected by her parent's divorce back in 2000. Things got even worse with her mom's second divorce, which was followed by Moore's hospitalization and stint in rehab.

"When Demi was hospitalized, Tallulah didn't show up to school for days because she was too embarrassed," a high school classmate said. "She was very open about Demi's issues and would sort of imply, 'Of course I have issues too, look at my mom.'"

Tallulah Willis is now working as a fashion blogger and growing into her own person. But she is still dealing with insecurities of her childhood — recently revealing she was diagnosed with body dysmorphia.

Even though Willis' parents both sought help for their daughter, it appears that they have two different approaches to what she needs.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt explains what it means to be a feminist

TRAILER: Sin City 2 rounds up the usual suspects >>

In an interview with the Daily Beast, the actor described himself as a "male feminist."

"What that means to me is that you don't let your gender define who you are — you can be who you want to be, whether you're a man, a woman, a boy, a girl, whatever," he explained. "However you want to define yourself, you can do that and should be able to do that, and no category ever really describes a person because every person is unique. That, to me, is what 'feminism' means."

"So yes, I'd absolutely call myself a feminist."

Gordon Levitt explained that his parents really taught him the history behind feminism, and why he believes in it as an important movement — but not just for women.

"If you look at history, women are an oppressed category of people," he explained. "There's a long, long history of women suffering abuse, injustice, and not having the same opportunities as men, and I think that's been very detrimental to the human race as a whole."

Ooh la la, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's mystery woman is revealed >>

Gordon-Levitt's parents are both teachers and they taught their son how to respect women and even empathize with their struggles.

"I'm a believer that if everyone has a fair chance to be what they want to be and do what they want to do, it's better for everyone. It benefits society as a whole."

The duo, who called off their engagement earlier this month amid rumors of infidelity on Strahan's part, were seen grabbing a bite together in Beverly Hills Thursday. The sighting sparked speculation that they planned to give the relationship another go, but is it actually the case?

"They had lunch. They are on friendly terms. No big deal," a source told E! News of their meeting today, adding that the pair definitely doesn't plan to reconcile. Bummer.

A rep for Strahan said the relationship hit the rocks due to time apart.

"They love each other very much but with the distance and work schedule it has been hard to maintain the relationship," the rep said.

Michael Strahan addresses the GMA rumors >>

And E! News says a source called the couple's relationship "complicated."

"They have been on and off for two years," said the source, who is close to the couple. "There have been a lot of ups and downs and back and forth. Sometimes they were together, sometimes they were not. They were both aware all along of their relationship status. No one did anything wrong. They were both aware of their situation and it was a complicated relationship. There are no big surprises between them."

Murphy and Strahan first started dating in 2007 and the pair has nine kids between them. Murphy, a former VH1 star and model who was previously married to Eddie Murphy, and Strahan, who was once married to Jean Muggli, have been engaged since 2009. The pair has been notoriously tight-lipped about their private lives since the start of their relationship.

The rapper and Community star penned a poem about white privilege and racial stereotypes in the music biz and then shared the piece in a lengthy string of early-morning tweets.

The poem doesn't explicitly mention the shooting death of 18-year-old Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, but it does seem to be inspired by this week's events in the St. Louis suburb.

SHARK WEEK CONFESSIONAL: How a shark-phobic girl became a shark fan

In the small Central American country of Belize, swimming with sharks is what people do. I mean, it's totally okay and enthusiastically supported. People pay to go on shark day trips.

When my husband and I set out on our honeymoon, we weren't aware Belize was surrounded by one of the biggest coral reefs in world. We also didn't know that you couldn't swim right off the beach. Belize protects its ecosystem, so in order to swim in the turquoise water, tourists kayak out to the reef, tie off on a buoy and hope Jaws is on vacation.

Let me give you some backstory: When I was a kid, my family went to Myrtle Beach. When you're a kid, nothing scares you, not even the ocean. As humans, we're not supposed to be in the ocean. It's not our natural habitat. Still, we tempt fate and hope to not lose a foot. Well, that day in Myrtle Beach, I have a vague memory of being waved at by a bunch of lifeguards and told to get out of the water because a tiger shark was swimming with me.

Right. Life altering experience.

As an adult, I became a beach enthusiast while living in Charleston, South Carolina, but I still figured I would, at any time, lose a limb. Then, I moved to Phoenix and developed an anxiety disorder. The underwater monsters got much bigger. Now, take me to Belize, tell me to jump off a boat in open water and watch me pee myself.

The day of swimming with sharks, I was terrified and hung over. My sweet husband, Jake, fed me a cocktail before we got on the boat and we rode about 15 minutes to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. There is a specific place within the reserve called Shark Ray Alley. It's the place where fishermen used to clean their nets before returning to port, so now, sea monsters congregate and hope to be fed tourists.

Our guide was this wild island native who'd been doing dumb things his whole life. Dumb as in swimming with sharks. He pulled our boat over the crystal clear water of Shark Ray Alley, and that's when I saw... them. First, they were just black shapes. I could hear the Jaws music in my head: duhn-duhn, duhn-duhn. Then, I noticed the sharks weren't alone. Stingrays the size of pterodactyls were everywhere.

Our guide: "Go ahead, jump in."

What? I'm sorry, you want me to what? I considered my options. The trip wasn't free, so I didn't want to tick Jake off about buying a boat pass and then bailing. Plus, what better place to die than Belize, right? The guide jumped in, and I followed.

The water was like a lukewarm bath. It felt silky. I adjusted my snorkel so I could at least see the shark before it bit my leg off. But then, I saw something incredible. A school of stingrays swam below me in V formation like a flock of ducks. Something primal in me reached out and grabbed one, and off I went! I was riding a flippin' stingray!

Soon after, I found myself petting a Nurse shark's stomach. Nurse sharks are considered mostly harmless, but they still have those spooky, black shark eyes. Their stomachs feel slimy. I'm a good swimmer, and I'd obviously lost my mind, because I started going down deep so I could swim side by side with sharks who could fit my head in their mouths. I lost track of my husband. I was in love with the fish.

When our guide made us leave, I almost cried. I wanted to live in Shark Ray Alley. How did this happen? How did a girl who used to have SNL Land Shark nightmares become a shark enthusiast? I chalk it up to fear. Fear can be a bad thing. It can keep you from following your dreams, keep you from doing what you really want.

But when fear is conquered, we become superheroes. That's how I felt that day in Belize. I wasn't Sara, depressive-anxiety girl. I was Sara, shark tamer! After Shark Ray Alley, I was high for hours. Lights were brighter. Food tasted better. Simply my husband's hand in mine felt sexy as hell.

When we conquer fear, the world is such an intense place. I firmly believe, thanks to the sharks, that we need to do things that scare us, all the time. Unfortunately, I don't have a beach nearby, but you better believe: Next time I get a chance to do something semi-idiotic, I'll be the first to jump off the boat.
