Jamie Dornan gives more than lady boners in Fifty Shades

The screen adaptation of E L James' best-selling book is set for release on Valentine's Day next year, and apparently Dornan's on-screen performance is so good that co-screenwriter Kelly Marcel thinks that he is deserving of an Oscar.

Has Dakota Johnson found her own Mr. Grey? >>

Marcel revealed during a Hollywood Q&A with Reza Aslan on Wednesday, Aug. 6, that Dornan is so versatile in his performance (including his sex scenes) that he deserves more than just praise, he deserves a golden statue.

When asked about the difficulty of writing a sex scene, Aslan recited a line from the book. "'Mmmm... he's soft and hard at once, like steel encased in velvet, surprisingly tasty, salty and smooth. He's my own Christian Grey-flavored Popsicle.'

Jamie Dornan and his wife welcome a new baby >>

"She says that, 'You are my Popsicle.' That line went in, it's genius. They apparently did that scene great," Marcel said at the An Evening In The Writer's Room event. "Apparently, Jamie is great at being soft and hard at the same time. Which is hard to do for an actor! He's going to get an Oscar!"

And writing sex scenes requires a lot of detailed description. "I had to actually describe everything! It was really embarrassing when you're doing studio notes around the table with 12 people," the British screenwriter explained.

Charlie Hunnam still regrets quitting Fifty Shades of Grey >>

For the rest of us, we'll have to judge the actor's performance when it hits screens on February 2015.

Celebrating Galavis' birthday for the first time as a couple, the Bachelor star and his girlfriend Ferrell were all smiles during the big bash in Miami's Flamingo Theater Bar, People reported. The pair, who got together at the Season 18 finale of ABC's hit dating show, although not engaged, looked very happy together as they mingled with guests and family.

Galavis also introduced Ferrell to many of his pals, who had not met her before that night, and she also enjoyed time with his family again.

"I had an amazing time with his family," Ferrell told the entertainment publication. "And I also got to meet so many of his friends."

The happy pair spent lots of time dancing to Miami favorites, Periko and Jessi Leon, as well as a set by the Julca Brothers. Proving that last month's breakup rumors were totally false, Galavis and Ferrell stuck together for most of the night, being very affectionate and sweet to each other.

Nikki Ferrell happy with Juan Pablo Galavis, slams haters >>

At one point, Grammy-winning salsa singer, Obie Bermúdez, serenaded the pair with "Adventures in Loving You," which is Galavis and Ferrell's song.

"That was definitely my favorite part of the night, as that song brings back a lot of fun memories," Ferrell said. "The only thing missing was maybe a little country music, like Luke Bryan or Jake Owen!"

Bachelor Juan Pablo finally drops L-word on Nikki Ferrell >>

Meanwhile, Galavis was very happy to have his girl celebrate with him and said he looks forward to spending many more birthdays with her.

"She's a wonderful woman — smart, caring, who treats my daughter amazingly well," Galavis said. "She's the one who has to deal with this Latin guy, with a culture that she sometimes doesn't understand. She's been able to handle it well!"

  • 2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 a yellow onion, chopped

  2. In another skillet, heat the olive oil. Add the onions and habanero or jalapeño, and cook until softened, about 4 minutes. Mix in the coriander and Sriracha sauce, heating another minute until the spice darkens. Add in the chicken broth. Increase the heat to medium-high, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Stir in the cooked quinoa, and heat for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the liquid is mostly absorbed.
  3. Divide the quinoa into 4 bowls (1/2 cup per bowl), and top with the swordfish steaks.

Roxane Gay explains what it means to be a Bad Feminist

$

In her new essay collection, first-generation Haitian novelist and editor Roxane Gay explores what it means to be a feminist in modern-day American society and finds she falls short. It's not her fault. The definition of "feminist" has been so skewed over the past few decades, no one can live up to the term. In fact, most women don't even know what "feminist" means anymore.

Gay's favorite definition: "just women who don't want to be treated like s***." I can get behind that. I can get behind a lot of what Gay has to say in her new collection Bad Feminist.

5 Influential women standing up for gender equality in the U.S. >>

Gay has lived her life with a double whammy. Not only is she a woman, but she's a black woman. In college, she overheard a classmate once call her "the affirmative-action student." She fights two stereotypes, and she frankly, openly comments on both in her intelligent, sometimes comical essay collection.

Bad Feminist: Essays

In one essay titled, "How to Be Friends with Another Woman," she commands, "Abandon the cultural myth that all female friendships must be bitchy, toxic or competitive." Too true. How often when we go out at night do we not dress to impress men but to impress other women?

Speaking of: "Don't let your friends buy ugly outfits or accessories you don't want to look at when you go out." Again, true, and what a relief Gay doesn't take herself too seriously, ever. She never comes off as angry or self-righteous. She is honest and warm.

She takes a close, scathing look at modern music and film. She questions women's ill-advised adoration for abusive idiot Chris Brown. She openly admits to loving Robin Thicke's song "Blurred Lines," even though it perpetuates the idea that "no" really means "yes." (Gay takes full responsibility for liking this song as an example of her "bad feminism.")

Adichie's We Should All Be Feminists is a call to action: Will you step up? >>

In fiction, she attacks Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey due to the fact that both books at their core are about abusive, controlling relationships. She writes, "Fifty Shades is about a man finding peace and happiness because he finally finds a woman willing to tolerate his bulls*** for long enough."

As a black woman, she found Django Unchained impossible to watch. She's still waiting for the day when she can slap Quentin Tarantino in the face.

Bad Feminist is about more than feminism. This essay collection is a commentary about society as a whole. Gay is disgusted by the direction in which things are going. She worries about women's reproductive freedoms (and rightfully so), and she is saddened by the words of so-called female role models who continually set women's rights back a couple of decades.

6 Books that address women's rights issues >>

Gay is spot-on when she writes, "Often, when I read the news, I have to make sure, in fact, I'm not reading The Onion." Such is the absurdity of reality.

Yes, maybe Gay is a "bad feminist" compared to the militants out there. She likes rap music, men and the color pink. Through her essays, she owns who she is and beseeches the rest of us to not necessarily pursue a label but pursue our values.

She might be a "bad feminist," but Gay is dedicated to issues important to the feminist movement, and I believe her essay collection will open a lot of eyes and inspire women of all ages to stand and speak up.

VIDEO: Taylor Swift makes young cancer patient's day >>

"It seems the 24-year-old country singer has found her soulmate," the Daily Mail reported in an article, citing "anonymous sources."

But on Monday, the article disappeared from the newspaper's website.

According to Gawker, neither Swift or Kloss challenged the story.

"Taylor and Karlie have grown very close," the article continued. "They are inseparable. Taylor wanted someone to live with her, to have some company, and Karlie jumped at the chance to move in with her friend. They spent a lot of time together before Karlie moved in but now they are rarely apart. They do everything together, from visits to the gym to going on road trips."

Kloss' spokesperson finally commented on the story, telling Gawker, "Karlie and Taylor do not live together and have no plans to live together. The Daily Mail did not verify the facts of the story prior to publishing it."

George Clooney rips Daily Mail, refuses their Amal Alamuddin apology >>

The story was removed, just like another story the Daily Mail published a few months ago. The newspaper's story that time was about the family of Amal Alamuddin, George Clooney's fiancée. In that case, Clooney publicly denounced the report.

"The original story never cites that source, but instead goes out of its way to insist on four different occasions that 'a family friend' spoke directly to the Mail," Clooney wrote. "A 'family friend' was the source. So either they were lying originally or they're lying now."

The Daily Mail had first said they would investigate the story, but then pulled it down because they "accept Mr. Clooney's assurances that the story is inaccurate."

Robin Williams' impact on a writer's life >>

"Plans for the In Memoriam segment are in discussion," read the statement from Mischer. "While we are all still coming to terms with this week's tragic news, we are working to give Robin Williams the proper and meaningful remembrance he so well deserves."

Most of the world is still reeling from the loss of the renowned funnyman. News of Williams' death and the love that Twitter users shared for the comedian brought Williams-related hashtags to lead the trending board. From "RIPRobin" to "MrsDoubtfire," nearly all of the trending hashtags were related to Williams' life and extensive résumé.

Worst human beings in the world force Zelda Williams from social media >>

Much is still up in the air regarding the Williams tribute. How do you pay tribute to a comedian who touched so many from such a span of generations? Will they use the moment to discuss depression? Will they keep things light and funny, just as Williams had a tendency to do? How long should the moment last? With Williams' career spanning such a long time and with his list of friends, colleagues and worshipers seemingly countless, who will have the honor of stepping onto the stage to honor Williams?

News of Williams' death sent an outpouring of love and shock from Hollywood and beyond. Anyone faced with the task of standing in front of millions of viewers and trying to form coherent sentences over the loss of Williams is in for a rough ride. While we don't expect the Emmy tribute to offer much closure, we're intrigued to see what they'll bring to the table when the show airs in just 12 days. Will you tune in for the tribute?

Kristin Cavallari loves being a Midwestern mom

VIDEO: Kristin Cavallari takes controversial anti-vax stance >>

Though Cavallari's life has changed in a lot of ways, she's adjusted beautifully and is thriving in her new roles. The fashionista recently sat down with Michigan Avenue magazine and talked about how much she loves being a mama and living in Chicago.

The climate in Illinois is a far cry from that of Laguna Beach, where we first got to know her, but Cavallari, who is also on the cover of Michigan Avenue's annual fall fashion issue, has no complaints. "I love Chicago because my mom is here, along with that whole side of my family," she said. "It's a great city. The people are so friendly. There's always lots to do and the lake is so beautiful. We like going to Rustic House for date night, Girl & the Goat, and Summer House, which is pretty new — it reminds me of Santa Monica." The former California girl also added that the shopping in Chicago is up to par. "I like to shop in the Gold Coast," she said. "I call it the Beverly Hills of Chicago."

Cavallari, who wed Cutler in June of 2013, undoubtedly is thankful to have her mother's family around now that her family has quickly expanded. The footwear designer shared that taking care of her two babies, Camden and Jax, is a full-time job. "It's a lot easier in the sense that you know what to do and expect, so you have a lot more confidence," she said, referring to giving birth for the second time. "But you have zero time to yourself now. Camden takes a nap at 1 o'clock, so when Camden's going down, Jax is waking up to eat and play, so there's literally no time," she added.

Cavallari previously said that she wanted to have at least four kids, but now that she's in the trenches, she admits that three might be enough. But that's not to say she doesn't love being a mom. "Right now the last thing on my mind is having another baby, but it's a ton of fun," she said. "We love having kids. Camden is going to be two in August, and it's such a fun age... he makes us laugh every single day. So I do think we'll end up having another one, but then we're done. It's a lot of work and being pregnant for a full nine months isn't the best thing in the world."

Mortdecai: Every moment that made us f***ing love the trailer

Mortdecai

As the music in the trailer begins to play, we get the feeling this is no typical Johnny Depp film. As Shirley Bassey begins to croon the lyrics to "Big Spender", we become immediately hooked.

Sacha Baron Cohen as Time in Alice sequel: Is this a prank? >>

By the time we get to see the mustachioed Depp make two clean swipes with his mustache brush, perfectly defining his facial handlebar, we know some massive silliness is going to ensue in this movie.

As Charlie Mortdecai, this "man of distinction" has sandy blond hair and looks incredibly dapper in his tailored corduroy suits. Inspector Martland (Ewan McGregor) refers to Mortdecai as "a bit of a moron, actually," and that's why we love him. He's a classic bumbler, even pulling a "Dick Cheney" when he accidentally shoots a friend on a hunting trip.

Mortdecai is stylish, edgy and socially inappropriate, so we're not too sure how he's going to fare with the ladies. Gwyneth Paltrow, Olivia Munn and even Aubrey Plaza all seem verklempt when it comes to this wealthy art dealer who enjoys jetsetting around the world and crash-landing poolside at swanky hotels.

Apparently, Mortdecai can't keep his hands off Olivia Munn's breasts and says, "Who knows, this may be a customary greeting in America," as he makes the motion of squeezing her mammary glands.

The film is based on a trilogy of books by Kyril Bonfiglioli that have amassed a cult following. This movie focuses on Mortdecai's search for a stolen painting, rumored to contain the code for a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold, all while juggling angry Russians and the British MI5.

14-year-old pulls off ultimate heist by living inside Walmart for four days

Teen makes walmart his home

Teen makes walmart his home

Even though I’ve hit the big 3-0, I promise you that I am not that far from my teenage years. While what this teen did was illegal, as he stole and used Walmart merchandise in order to survive inside of the superstore for multiple days, the teenage part of me can’t help but to say that’s pretty badass.

Here’s what went down in the super-secret Corsicana Walmart infiltration, according to CBS DFW News

“You never expect that you’re at Walmart and someone has been living there for four days. That’s crazy,” said Myrna Aguilar, a Walmart customer.

Customers who walked down the aisles where the teen was living never noticed two hidden compounds where the boy was able to store necessities, sleep in a makeshift bed and eat items taken from inside the store.

But wait, it gets better. This grown boy was having all kinds of Night at the Museum fun and was totally creative in his endeavors. He fashioned a crack in the back wall of the drink aisle to steal juice. He surreptitiously snatched a fish from the pet department. He even went so far as to change his (stolen) Walmart clothes every few hours so that employees would never catch on to his true identity. The 14-year-old runaway also wore diapers instead of using the store restroom so that he wouldn’t get caught.

Seriously, someone get this kid an agent because he has a movie deal coming his way soon. What led to this vigilante’s demise? Police were called after staff members detected a trash trail leading to one of his hideouts. The teen lives with relatives and had decided to run away to Walmart while visiting other relatives.

Fortunately, Walmart does not plan to file criminal charges at this time. In all seriousness, I hope this boy is able to find a stable home environment so that he does not need to pull such an elaborate stunt again. The teen runaway’s story may have sad motivation, but we can all agree that his execution was on point.

What Lauren Bacall taught me about real beauty

$

The girl was real. She didn't sugarcoat the truth; she'd give it to you straight. And it's that same cool, laid-back candor that made her a star with actual staying power, both on-screen and off.

But what people don't always realize about the actress — although she was known for her sultry voice and cutting "Look" — was that she didn't have oodles of confidence. Just because someone's beautiful and blunt doesn't mean she's not filled with the same insecurities that plague everyone else. Take a look at some of the things she said over the years.

"I'm really a very shy and insecure person. I don't know why everyone has this formidable image of me." [NJ.com]

 Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart

"I used to tremble from nerves so badly that the only way I could hold my head steady was to lower my chin practically to my chest and look up at Bogie [future husband Humphrey Bogart]. That was the beginning of 'The Look.'" [Parade]

"I'm not tough, and I never have been. I suppose over the years I've built up kind of a veneer to protect myself, because I have functioned on my own for a long, long time... " [Parade]

Lauren was shy, nervous and vulnerable. She had doubts and insecurities about her talent, her looks. She never thought she was particularly special or beautiful, calling her stardom a mere "accident" and once telling a Vogue photographer how best to shoot her "peculiar face."

I like to remember that whenever I'm having one of those ugly days where I feel sure life would be easier if I was simply prettier, thinner, smarter... better.

Regardless of how she felt, you'd never have know Lauren was insecure, because she never let her insecurities own her; she owned them.

Even as she grew older, Lauren displayed a great sense of perspective. She was the image of aging gracefully and living vibrantly. "I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that," she once said. That is true beauty, and something I hope you'll remember.

We'll certainly remember you, Lauren. RIP.

OMG! Beyoncé releases a surprise "visual" album >>

Cera has pulled off a feat that is nothing short of miraculous in this day and age: He kept a secret. The actor recently recorded an entire album of folk/rock music and released it five days ago on bandcamp.com, a website whose tagline is "discover amazing new music and directly support the artists who make it."

Now that the word is out, Cera fans all over the world are flocking to the site to check out heavily instrumental tracks that are punctuated by Cera's trademark whispery voice on the album, titled true that. Cera's sense of humor also shines through on the page: His bio reads, "Michael Cera was born in Canada in 1988 at the tender age of zero."

Academy Award-nominated actor, Jonah Hill, Cera's co-star and partner in crime in the coming-of-age comedy, Superbad, is a self-proclaimed fan of the album and is helping promote the music on social media. "My great friend Michael Cera not only is a brilliant actor, but he also makes great music," Hill tweeted yesterday.

Cera's latest artistic venture serves as an illustration that the Arrested Development star is a man of many talents: recording artist, movie star, TV actor and producer. Cera, who openly admits that he's often mistaken for Jesse Eisenberg, also launched a YouTube comedy channel called Jash last year with Sarah Silverman, which currently has close to 1.2 million subscribers. "Yeah, is doing work for the internet a step down for me? Yes!" Cera jokes in the intro video for Jash.

Although true that is Cera's first solo album, he previously recorded backing vocals and guitar for Weezer's album, Hurley, and has played live bass for indie-rock group, Mister Heavenly, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Light summer meal: Sweet roasted tomato salad with couscous and feta

$

I really enjoy light, easy meals, especially during the warm summer months. Salads are usually my go-to lunch or dinner when I don't feel like heating up the kitchen. In this salad I used sweet cherry tomatoes that I lightly roasted in the oven with olive oil and herbs and then tossed into cooked couscous along with some crumbled feta cheese and spicy arugula. This salad is wonderful served either warm or chilled, and is perfect to pack for lunch, since it holds up well when made ahead of time.

Sweet roasted cherry tomato salad with couscous and feta recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup uncooked couscous
  • 1 cup roasted cherry tomatoes
  • 2 large handfuls fresh arugula
  • 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
  • 1/4 cup dried currants or raisins
  • 1/4 cup favorite balsamic salad dressing
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup croutons (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Prepare the couscous as directed on the package.
  2. Once cooked, remove the couscous from the heat, and allow it to cool. If the couscous is clumpy, then use a fork to fluff it and help break it up.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the cooked couscous, tomatoes, arugula, pine nuts and raisins.
  4. Drizzle the salad with the balsamic dressing, and using tongs, toss very well.
  5. Finish the salad with crumbled feta cheese and croutons, and garnish with parsley.

Lil' Kim attacks Nicki Minaj on remix of Beyoncé's "Flawless" >>

Minaj, who made headlines earlier this month for some pretty racy single artwork, is set to grace the stage on Sunday, Aug. 24, for the first live performance of her new single, "Anaconda." This will mark her very first performance as a solo act, too. Back in 2010, the "Young Money" honey performed at the pre-show with will.i.am and, then in 2012, with Alicia Keys for her "Girl on Fire" guest verse. But even though she's confirmed to perform her own solo material, it would seem convenient to take the stage more than once, considering the other performers of the evening. Could you imagine a live rendition of her new collabos with Usher ("She Came To Give It To You") or Beyoncé (for their much talked-about "Flawless" remix)?

Hours after the announcement, Usher sent Minaj a message on Twitter, reciprocating some nice words that the rapper said about working with the singer on his latest single. With all the spreading compliments, it sounds like these two might have a few tricks up their sleeves. In addition to Usher, Minaj and Bey, Five Seconds of Summer, Maroon 5 and Ariana Grande are also expected to hit the stage for performances.

Cage fighter Jon Koppenhaver, who goes by War Machine in the ring, is accused of viciously beating his porn star ex-girlfriend, Christy Mack, before going on the lam. He tweeted a statement claiming he's "not a bad guy" and seemed to imply he acted in self-defense, saying he "ended up fighting for [his] life."

Police say Koppenhaver showed up unannounced at Mack's Las Vegas home, where he found her with a male friend and attacked them both. Mack posted graphic photos of her battered body to social media Tuesday, along with an emotional statement describing the attack. She's recovering from severe injuries, including 18 broken bones in her face, a fractured rib, a badly injured leg, several lesions from a knife and a ruptured liver.

In her blog post, she says she regrets getting testy with the show's host, but stands by her decision to stay tight-lipped at the time.

"I must say I was not as respectful as I should of (sic) been to Andy," she wrote. "When I filmed the reunion, Mario and I had reconciled only the month before. I so wanted to try to get our relationship back on track."

And it turns out, she was staying quiet for Mario's sake, too, and has since thought better of it.

"Mario was extremely adamant about me not speaking about our relationship and his infidelity," she continued. "This is so not who I am — I always speak freely on all subjects. I was allowing my husband to control my behavior."

And despite drama with the other housewives being at the forefront of the show, Ramona said during the reunion she was grateful for them being there for her.

"Yes, Andy, all the women on the show, including LuAnn, were supportive of my situation with Mario," she said. "Without them I would never have been able to handle what I was going through. I thank all my fellow Housewives for their support and continued support."

Mary Greenwell, who had the honor of helping the late beauty look her best, has opened up for the first time about the ways in which the woman who was an actual princess was really just a regular gal with great genes.

Prince George turns one: 5 Things he has in common with Princess Diana >>

"Diana was very aware of her beauty regime, cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice a day," she told Stylist magazine in a "rare" and "exclusive" interview.

"Diana would also be wearing a heavier foundation which is important as women age. I mean heavy in the sense of coverage but still sheer. In your teens and early twenties, tinted moisturiser is fine. But in your 30s, 40s and beyond, you need something more flattering."

When pressed for specifics on Princess Diana's secrets, Greenwell added, "Diana was very sensible when it came to her skin, she would always make sure she took her makeup off at the end of the day and make sure she always had a clean face before applying makeup."

Sharing she believes not enough women give a solid night's sleep and a healthy diet the attention they deserve, the beauty advisor explained, "After I started working with her, Diana did everything in moderation. She cut back on drinking so her skin was 100%. Women today need to take care of themselves the same way. If you smoke, drink or do anything to excess, you will destroy your most important beauty asset your skin. You must look after yourself."

Unfortunately for those of us willing to put some work into having as great a complexion as Prince William's mother had, Greenwell added, "She had the most incredible skin, which frankly at the end of the day also can come down to family genes."

Lucky Prince George, we suppose!

Jennifer Aniston is completely smitten with Justin Theroux >>

The actor jetted off to a weeklong stay in the Tahitian island paradise with fiancée, Jennifer Aniston, in tow to celebrate both his birthday and the two-year anniversary of the couple's engagement.

"It [was] a romantic trip to celebrate their engagement anniversary and Justin's birthday," an insider told People. "It's their first vacation together in Bora Bora and they were excited about the trip."

And it sounds like the busy couple could use the break — Theroux's been in New York filming his HBO series, The Leftovers, while Aniston's been all over the place promoting her Aveeno hair care line, Living Proof.

Justin Theroux's strange collections aren't allowed in his house >>

Despite their busy schedules, they seem to be making time for each other. A source says Theroux stopped by one of Aniston's events in Los Angeles for a quick visit.

"Jen had no idea that he was stopping by and she squealed with excitement when she saw him," the source says. "They genuinely looked very happy together. They kissed hello and Jen almost got flustered. You could tell that she really liked having Justin there. Justin kept smiling at her excitement. He was very sweet to her."

And Aniston has more busy months ahead — at the end of August, she'll be doing press for her movie, Life of Crime. In September, she's scheduled to appear at the Toronto Film Festival for the premiere of her upcoming film, Cake, and another film, She's Funny That Way, which re-teams Aniston with Owen Wilson, is set to debut soon in Venice.

Exclusive photos: Going goth for Edgar Allan Poe >>

Eve and Cowper-Smith met as teens at the Westminster School in London and were high-school sweethearts. According to People, they later split and Eve met Adam O'Riordan while studying at Oxford. The couple broke up in 2012 and Eve eventually found Cowper-Smith again.

Eve is the daughter of actors and, although she was born in London, her family moved to Los Angeles when she was a child so her dad could try to make it in American film. They moved back to the U.K. when she was 13.

Before landing the role of a lifetime in Star Trek, Eve worked in London TV and cinema for years before making her way to the U.S. Her first big role was alongside Harrison Ford and Ashley Judd in 2009's Crossing Over. She also starred with Jay Baruchel in She's Out of My League, as well as Entourage and Sex and the City 2.

In She's Out of My League, Eve played every guy's dream girl. At the time, she talked about what made her so desirable — being smart, funny and a good person — and may have given some insight into what she looks for in a partner.

"That's what makes her the 10. She's all the things that make a good person," Eve told SheKnows back in 2010. "For it to be taken away that she's a perfect 10 aesthetically would be missing the whole point of the movie."

Congrats to the happy couple!

Why you can't just tell black boys to be good and stay out of trouble

My kid is reading books meant for third graders, can put together a puzzle of the United States with no guides or words and can probably tell you the contents of the Cosmo I’ve had in my backseat for 6 months. Which means that two weeks from now, when the class is still practicing letter sounds, he’s likely to be on the back wall, emptying trash cans or knocking over chairs. Which means my exceptional boy will be labeled a troublemaker. And that’s a label a little black boy can’t afford to have. Because it’s a label he may never be able to shake.

So when it comes to using the tragic events in Ferguson, Missouri as a teaching point, I can’t simply tell my children that police are good guys and stop there.

My husband will teach them what he was taught as a child. Don’t talk back to the police. Don’t make any sudden movements. Say, yes, sir to the police, even if you don’t agree. And beyond the police: Don’t walk in large groups with your other black friends. Don’t dress like a gangster.

This is not an indictment of the police or law enforcement. My cousin was a sheriff. I have family members in the military. I wanted for many years to be a police officer and am only letting that go because I’ve essentially “aged out.” This is more of a statement that the rules for little black boys in this country continues to be at odds with the rules for some others of us. It’s not as easy telling my kids that nothing will happen to them if they just keep their noses clean.

We don’t know exactly what happened when 18-year-old Mike Brown was shot, but we know that the St. Louis County Police department account – that Brown reached for an officer’s gun – is in dispute by several eyewitnesses, including the friend who was with him at the time. I am obviously not in a position to dispute the facts of the case. And, for lack of a better word, I think looting is stupid and ruining your own community is no way to make a point.

But when I look at this case, I am not seeing this one kid in this one place who may or may not have reached for a police officer’s gun, but who most certainly is dead.

I am looking at my 5-year-old and my 1-year-old and seeing two children who will look at the news and ask why these black people are fighting the police. And I will have to tell them that despite what education you have, regardless of who you may be, you cannot have skin the color of ours and talk back to the police. Not in this country.
