The new Hobbit trailer literally brought me to tears and here's why

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

1. Somber, yet familiar music

While it's fitting that "Edge of Night," the song that Pippin sings to Denethor in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, plays during the trailer, the music is slow and melancholy, with a Celtic feel. The lyrics speak of treading paths, unknown elements hidden in the shadows and uncertain fate. Clearly, the music is setting the tone for an epic battle we humans know all too well.

The Hobbit's Tauriel vs. The Hunger Games' Katniss smack down >>

2. Fallen statue

The image of a statue of a leader smashed to bits on the ground reminds us of a war-torn city. It represents civil unrest and the broken dreams of citizens who want peace. Of course, no story would be entertaining or relevant without intense conflict, but we're wondering if we've seen enough war on the evening news.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

3. Dragon as a Godzilla figure

While the 2014 version of Godzilla tried to make the beast less threatening to mankind, the image of the giant lizard spewing fire on a city sends chills up our spines. It seems this trailer is trying to invoke some of Godzilla's fire-breathing fury with Smaug the dragon as he soars over Lake-town, letting us know the world is out of control.

Why Godzilla is the new Zombie-Vampire >>

4. Gandolph's haunting question

Gandolf (Ian McKellen) says, "Will you follow me, one last time?" implying this journey is coming to an end. The wizard, with his staff and white robe, is a father figure to many of the characters in the story. To us, it feels as if a family member is saying farewell.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

5. Galadriel sorrowfully kneeling over Gandolf

A kiss can be many things, but when Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) leans down to put her lips on the bruised and battered face of Gandolf, it reveals a deep love and respect between the two. The image is very powerful.

6. Thorin: "I will have war!"

Thorin (Richard Armitage) is no different than many of today's modern leaders who believe waging war proves a nation's strength. We hope that one day, elves, wizards, dwarves, hobbits and even humans will find peaceful solutions to their conflicts.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens Dec. 17.

Auction extended after highest bid for James Franco is only $50

James Franco leaks Dave Franco and Zac Efron's coupledom >>

The actor was to be auctioned off as a date to benefit the Art of Elysium, an organization that "is dedicated to enriching the lives of artists and critically ill children."

The auction promised the highest bidder would be able to "meet James Franco with two VIP tickets to a preview screening of Child of God on July 31st, in NYC." Although the auction says the value of the prize is $2,500, the clock began counting down with only dollars donated.

When the countdown had only a few minutes left, people began bidding furiously — but only a cent at a time. By the time the auction period was over, the bid was barely $50.

So, what did the auctioneers do? They kept going. Every time the clock got below 30 seconds, it wound back up. Hours after the auction had promised to end, it continues to run — but it will likely not get all the way to $2,500. Nearly two hours after the clock first wound down, there is barely $100 donated.

James Franco and the Art of Elysium haven't been vocal about the auction on social media, but bidders may begin to wonder soon if it will end in time for the premiere.

Why Dawn of the Planet of the Apes blew our primate brains >>

But, despite the auction's flaws, Franco is doing what he can to promote his new film.

Pretty Little Liars review: The girl who cried drunk

VIDEO: 5 Answers to expect in Pretty Little Liars Season 5 >>

Just when it all seems like Zack and Ella are on their way to marital bliss, Zack comes out of nowhere and starts hitting on Hanna (Ashley Benson). We definitely did not — we repeat — did not see this one coming. He gives her some creeper line about how he's always had a thing for bad girls and then strokes her back. Too bad Hanna's drunk. Still, she's sober enough to make one smart decision by reaching out to Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) for help. Both girls want Hanna to confirm the problem before she tells Aria (Lucy Hale). Especially considering she constantly reeks like a liquor cabinet these days.

It doesn't take long to confirm. Zack slips into Hanna's car when he sees her and gives her his number. Let's pause again to repeat how not cool this whole situation is. Sure, we've forgiven the show with these kinds of relationships before, but this is no Ezra and Aria. Zack's intentions are far from honorable. Especially, considering his wedding with Ella is right around the corner.

Lucy Hale shares the secret behind her success: I never had a plan B >>

Thank goodness Hanna agrees. She's back on the Haleb train anyway. She immediately rips up the number and goes to Aria, who thinks Hanna is a drunk that can't be trusted. Aria's sort of right, except in this one instance, of course.

It looks like Hanna just may have gotten under Aria's skin at least a little. Because at the end of the episode, when she's snuggled between Ella and her soon-to-be stepdad, she's not all comfy-cozy. We really, really did not see this twist coming on the show but if it gets Byron back in some episodes, we'll take it. We'd love to see Byron and Ella rekindle their love. Just hopefully it doesn't come at the price of Zack taking advantage of some poor, innocent girl, specifically Hanna.

QUIZ: Are you a hard-core Pretty Little Liars fan? >>

Meanwhile, Ali is still scheming tonight, and Noel Kahn returns to help. Well, sort of. His shadow returns at least. In an attempt to get the police off her back, Ali recruits Ashley to her side by staging a break-in at the Marin household. All it takes is a shadowy figure with a knife (aka a hooded Noel Kahn) and Ashley's momma bear instincts kick right in. Ashley calls the police and defends Ali to Detective Tanner.

This incident kicks up a whole host of questions on the show: Why is Ali so set on everyone believing she was kidnapped? Where has Noel been that he just shows up as the rogue burglar whenever Ali beckons? Why does Noel trust Ali so much? Why does Ali trust Noel? Is the all-knowing A aware of Ali's schemes?

Tell us what you thought of tonight's episode in the comments section below.

Comic-Con 2014: Vikings raid Paris in Season 3

Aww! Meet the poor little slave girl and Bjorn's love interest >>

"I always knew that one of the big features of Season 3 was going to be the attack on Paris," Michael Hirst shared about the upcoming season. "And the other big feature in Season 3, in terms of where we needed to be geographically, was the settlement that Ragnar had left in Wessex, because we knew from Season 1 that one of his biggest dreams is to settle some Scandinavian farms and territories with good land. There's not enough land in Scandinavia. Vikings had to colonize other places, work with other people. So, those were two of the geographical things I needed."

Not only did he feel like he needed to go there, but Hirst is also just genuinely excited to explore this new, French territory.

"The court in Paris will be unlike anything you've ever seen and I'm dying even for French people to see this and say, 'That's not Paris!' But, yes, it was at this period in history in the dark ages. It'll just be a new world for everyone. So to take the Vikings into that will just be awesome.

"People are not going to expect what they find," expanded Hirst. "[Like] the Franks, who lived in the area at the time and whose language has not been heard for hundreds and hundreds of years. And we'll have it on-screen. So, all the actors are very excited about this. But they were very Eastern. The Eastern Roman Empire had spread its influence down to France, there's some African influence [and] Egyptian."

Alyssa Sutherland on her role as the "other" woman >>

Hirst isn't the only one excited for Paris. He's stoked for the new world and the history he'll get to explore, but his two big stars, Clive Standen (Rollo) and Travis Fimmel (Ragnar), are excited to hit Paris for yet another reason.

"It's unlike anything we've ever seen before in France. Paris was a very different place," Standen said. "So we're going to tell the story of the first raid on Paris."

More raiding! We'll also see a true return of the brotherly bond between Ragnar and Rollo, something Fimmel is particularly happy for.

"We go back to the raiding thing this year instead of all the dramas in Kattegat," shared Fimmel. "So, we'll be back together raiding."

New worlds, more violence and some brotherly moments between two of the hottest men on-screen? You couldn't come up with a better combination for getting us stoked for Vikings Season 3.

Why everyone should start fist bumping

$

If you don't want to look like a creeper, you can also swap out the handshake for a nice fist bump, a high five or even a nose kiss as all of those greetings are more hygienic than the traditional clasping of hands.

According to a new study published in the Journal of Infection Control, researchers dipped a gloved hand into a "bacterial mixture" and then greeted another (gloved) researcher in a variety of ways. After each interaction they counted how many bacteria were transferred from the first glove to the second. They found that more than 10 times the amount of bacteria was transferred during a handshake than through a fist bump and twice as much as a high five.

Personally I think this gives us all a great opportunity to make life a little more entertaining. We could come up with fist bumps with special meanings. For instance, a "squid" bump (where after the initial contact you pulse your hand backwards like a squid) could indicate that you don't think someone is first date material. A "fireworks" bump (where your hand explodes with joy after the bump) could mean you are now besties. Add sound effects and you're virtually telling the person that you just found the love of your life . I also see a lot of potential for jazz hands here and those are never a bad thing.

Dave Whitworth of Aberystwyth University and the lead researcher says their findings have big implications for the spread of infectious diseases. "In certain circumstances people really should think twice before shaking hands with other people, especially in sensitive situations like health care settings but also perhaps when flu epidemics are happening," he said in an interview with CNN.

Alternatively, you could create a different fist bump for each person. Your boss gets a firm, knuckle-cracking to show that you're a go-getter while your girlfriends get a soft, partially-closed fist so you won't mess up your mani. Really, the possibilities are endless. And if anyone questions your new style you can just tell them it's all for science.

Paramount apologizes for Ninja Turtles Sept. 11 photo fail

Paramount Pictures' Australian office tweeted a photo for the Australian release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that shows the turtles falling from an exploding building with the underscore September 11, which is the opening date in the country.

Awesome! Take a look at this new trailer for the film >>

"Check out the official poster for #TMNT in cinemas September 11!" the tweet accompanying the image said.

Though unintentional, the internet quickly picked up on the big problem with the poster and began circulating the image online, talking about the poster's inappropriateness given the release date in Australia.

One popular comment from viewers was, "Turtles did 9/11."

The poster remained available on Twitter and Facebook for a few hours, according to Gawker, before Paramount quickly took the image down and apologized. "We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Australia," Paramount Australia said in a statement. "Combining the image and data was a mistake. We intended no offense and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use."

Megan Fox and more hot celebrity moms with tattoos >>

It is very possible the studio simply swapped out the dates, using the same artwork, for different countries without considering the implication in this instance.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie will revive the comic books, which were a popular franchise in the late 1980s and 1990s thanks in large part to the animated TV series. This 2014 movie will follow the turtles in New York City as they work together to stop Shredder and his evil Foot Clan from accomplishing Shredder's diabolical plan.

The film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Johnny Knoxville. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens in the U.S. on Aug. 8.

The Flash's Grant Gustin: "I might never play a cooler character," and here's why

Is more of this epic bromance ahead for The Flash? >>

From what we've seen of The Flash, we're witnessing a completely different take on the latest round of superhero shows. More along the lines of The Avengers movies, The Flash has some humor and lightness behind it. Sure, there are villains and, yes, The Flash will fight them. But, that doesn't mean the dude can't have a little fun along the way, right? That lightness is exactly what the showrunners were going for with their newest foray into this world.

"It was very much a conscious decision. I think part of that was because even in the comic books and in the DNA of the character, he was always sort of a fanboy," said producer Greg Berlanti. "He was always wild-eyed and couldn't believe some of the people he was hanging out with and there was a bright blue skies kind of demeanor. And comedic and good with a quip. And so you put all those things together and it kind of tells you the tone it wants to be, I think, a lot of times."

The Tomorrow People might go away, but there's still The Flash >>

Grant Gustin, who plays The Flash, expanded on his likability. It turns out he's pretty taken with his character.

"He's just so sweet," said Gustin. "I've played so many characters that I would never be friends with or wouldn't want to be in the same room with. So, it's nice to play somebody that people like and I would like. And he's funny and cool. I may never play a cooler character."

OK, boys. We get it and we already knew: The Flash from the comics was an awesome dude. But, what else makes The CW's Flash so special? Berlanti gave a good bit of credit to his star, as well.

"You're still in a heightened world," he said. "So, it was like introducing an organ to a body, I think. In part, so much of that is with Grant [Gustin]. When he came into the Arrow universe, if you can believe in him, and you want to believe in him and what happened to him, you would want to be in that world. I believe it's our connection with the actors that give it the most grounding."

After spending some time with Gustin, we definitely feel that connection. As if we weren't excited enough to geek out with you this fall, he solidified our excitement. Ready for a new kind of hero? Us, too.

Celebs who found soul mates after 40 >>

Freddie Glenn, along with two accomplices, kidnapped Karen Elisa Grammer from the parking lot of a Red Lobster in Colorado Springs in July 1975. He was convicted of rape and murder in the case and was also convicted of killing two other men. Glenn was originally sentenced to death, but that was commuted to life in prison when Colorado overturned their death penalty. He is currently serving a life sentence at the Buena Vista Correctional Facility, but is up for parole.

According to the Denver Post, Glenn was only 18 at the time of the murder and said he deserves a second chance. He also asked for Grammer's forgiveness.

Kelsey Grammer testified by video on Tuesday and said he has forgiven Glenn, but does not want him paroled. He said giving Glenn a second chance would be a betrayal of his sister.

"I accept your apology. I forgive you. However, I cannot give your release my endorsement. To give that a blessing would be a betrayal of my sister's life," Grammer said. "I want to believe you have actually changed your life. Things you say, I accept a lot of it.

"I accept that you live with remorse," he added. "But I live with tragedy every day."

Grammer, who just welcomed his sixth child with his wife, Kayte, was only 20 at the time of his sister's murder and he was not yet a household name.

Glenn's parole was denied this time, but he will be allowed to face the parole board again in three years.

Sinfully sweet strawberry-chocolate pita nachos

Nachos have come a long way since their fake cheese beginnings. While there's still a place for savory versions (hello, perfect bar food), I'm loving this sweeter take on them lately for dessert.

Strawberry chocolate pita nachos

The fruit topping choices are endless, but you can't go wrong with the classic strawberry-and-chocolate combination. Be generous with the chocolate — you wouldn't want to pick up a naked pita chip from the bottom, now, would you?

Strawberry-chocolate pita nachos recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8 ounce) bag cinnamon sugar pita chips
  • 1 cup diced strawberries
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

Directions:

  1. Lay pita chips on a serving plate or parchment paper.
  2. Spoon the diced strawberries on top of the pita chips.
  3. Melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave, stirring until smooth.
  4. Generously drizzle the chocolate mixture over the top of the pita chips.

Allison Williams' dream just came true: She was cast in Peter Pan Live!

A couple months ago, we made up a dream cast for the newly-announced Grease Live special on Fox. Williams was our top pick to play Maraschino, but we're just as happy to hear that she nabbed the lead role in the upcoming NBC special.

NBC's Peter Pan Live! nabs Christopher Walken as Captain Hook >>

How long has Williams been dreaming about playing the iconic character who never wants to grow up? Apparently, a very long time. According to MTV, Williams posted a photo to Instagram showing her as a little girl dressed as Peter Pan for Halloween, all in green with the familiar pointed hat and the most adorable smile you've ever seen.

The caption on the photo read, "Thrilled to be playing Peter Pan live on NBC in December. I've been rehearsing for a REALLY long time."

Seriously, how adorable is that?

8 Stars perfect to play Wendy in NBC's Peter Pan Live! >>

The special already has Christopher Walken as Captain Hook and now that NBC has added Williams to the cast, we're definitely excited to see this one.

And to think, just last year, the idea of a musical on prime time TV was the laughing stock of Hollywood. When people heard about NBC's Sound of Music Live!, there were so many haters that star, Carrie Underwood, had to defend herself all over the internet. But the musical quickly became a smash hit, spawning other specials, such as the aforementioned Grease remake and, of course, the Peter Pan Live! special.

Sound of Music Live! was Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So good >>

Musical and variety shows were once all the rage on prime time TV, but before the Sound of Music Live! special, they were few and far between for many years. Now, it looks like we're about to see a resurgence of live musical specials on TV, making us wonder what musical might be the next one to make it on the air.

What do you think of NBC's latest casting choice?

Robert Pattinson defends Kristen Stewart's cheating

Bromance! Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson hang out >>

The Twilight star spoke with Esquire U.K. about Stewart and what ended their relationship — and he had a surprising answer.

"S*** happens, you know?" Pattinson said, according to E! News. "It's just young people. It's normal! And honestly, who gives a s***?

"The hardest part was talking about it afterwards," he added. "Because when you talk about other people, it affects them in ways you can't predict."

Pattinson's answer may be less about not caring that she cheated and more about not wanting to be asked the question. Even though the actor was a rising star at the time, the cheating scandal gave him a non-stop paparazzi entourage. But he said, "I don't understand why. I think it goes through periods where you're assigned 'this is the guy to follow'. But whenever I see a bunch of paparazzi hanging out, I always think, 'Oh God, what have they found out!' Oh, that love child! I totally forgot!"

5 Reasons the World Cup reminds us of the Twilight series >>

It seems that the actor has gotten used to Hollywood, though, even though he hasn't been on the A-list for very long. He said he can still remember the first time he felt like a real-life celebrity.

"I remember when it happened," he said. "I was going to clubs in L.A. and you had to call the promoters ahead of time to get on the guest list. But one time I forgot to call, and I was on the list anyway. That's when I knew. I showed up with mustard down my T-shirt and they're like giving me the wink, 'Yeah, man, you're on the list.'"

Pattinson appears to just be focusing on his work now and he has (at least) six projects expected to be out in 2014 and 2015.

How do you get vibrio vulnificus?

Vibrio vulnificus, a cousin of the bacterium that causes cholera, thrives in warm saltwater. If you have an open wound and go into the ocean, you might be exposed to it.

The ocean isn't the only culprit for contracting vibrio vulnificus. You can get it while noshing on raw seafood such as oysters.

So far, the Florida Department of Health says 32 people have contracted the bacteria and 10 have died from it. In 2013, 41 people were infected and 11 died.

Florida isn't the only state with waters affected: It's been found in Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.

Anyone who has a compromised immune system or open cut should stay out of the water. And if you can't get enough of the salt water, rinse off before heading home, officials from the Florida Department of Health say.

"It's definitely something to take serious, but there are a number of other bacteria that you could run into," said Tim O'Connor, a spokesperson for the department.

Maybe it's a good week to stick to the pool. And watermelon.

The ongoing battle took another step in the wrong direction after the two stars had an altercation at Cipriani in Ibiza, Spain, last night. According to TMZ, Bloom reportedly threw a punch at the pop singer after Bieber shouted, "What's up, b***h?"

The gossip site also has video of the two being held back by their respective security teams. After being separated, the 37-year-old star took off while Bieber stayed behind with friends.

After Bieber left, the room broke out in applause, which included stars like Paris Hilton, Diddy and Lindsay Lohan. The fight appears to be over the musican's alleged affair with Bloom's then-wife, Miranda Kerr.

The 20-year-old taunted the British actor by posting a photo of Kerr on his Instagram account, but he deleted it shortly after. This latest antagonistic move shows that the fight is far from over.

While some of his fans are clearly supporting the troubled singer's post, the tide is turning against Bieber, who is watching his fame wane as his fans get older. However, one follower understood exactly what is happening in this feud.

She posted, "Everyone that came on here to hate on him, you are just wasting your time. He doesn't care what you have to say. Sorry, it's just the truth."

Bloom hasn't been a completely innocent party, though. He was seen hanging out with Bieber's on-again, off-again girlfriend, Selena Gomez, in April. Certainly, that must have rubbed the "Boyfriend" singer the wrong way.

It seems like the Biebs doesn't really care about making amends. He's perfectly happy to throw Bloom a blow or two via social media.

Bachelorette Andi Dorfman "devastated" over loss of Eric Hill >>

On the reunion show, The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose, earlier this week, Dorfman and the audience alike were dumbfounded when Season 10 first runner-up, Nick Viall, revealed that he had been intimate with Dorfman during the taping of the season. "If you weren't in love with me, I'm just not sure why you made love with me," he said. Now, Viall is admitting that he was just as shocked as everyone else by his revelation.

"I was surprised as anyone that it came out of my mouth, I suppose," Viall told Billy Bush on Access Hollywood in his first TV interview since After the Final Rose. "You know, if I had anticipated it, I maybe could have been a little more delicate or wish I was, but that was something that was weighing on my mind."

Viall went on to say that he felt inclined to reveal that the two had sex on air because it was the only time he was able to do so. "It was something that meant a lot to me and, unfortunately, it was my only opportunity to express it to her," he said. "I really wish I would have had an opportunity in private, but we were in an extraordinary situation."

It might have been his only opportunity because he had previously asked to see Dorfman, but she declined to speak with him face to face. The 33-year-old bachelor then wrote a heartfelt letter, which ended up being shared on Facebook. "I'm not ashamed of anything I wrote in that letter," he said on Access Hollywood. "I very much loved her. I thought we had an incredible connection. I thought she was amazing and, yeah, that's how I felt about her and wanted the opportunity to get it out."

Though he publicly humiliated Dorfman, Viall claims that the 27-year-old will always hold a special place in his heart. "She made me feel incredible when I was with her," he told Bush. "I felt she inspired me and brought out the best in me and it's tough to see that go... I wasn't there just for the act of sex. It wasn't like, 'Oh, well at least I got to do that,' or something like that."
