The holidays are approaching which means entertaining and baking season is upon us! You'll likely be spending more time than normal in the kitchen, making turkey and all the fixings, baking cookies for cookie exchanges and more pie than you know what to do with. Why not look cute while you do it? Etsy has a huge selection of handmade aprons, and we've picked a few favorites to add a little pizzazz to your cooking routine.

Cute cupcakes

This adorable cupcake apron from Etsy shop Aqua Mars Boutique may actually make you want to cook just so you can put it on. It screams fun with its brightly colored cupcake fabric and full, flouncy skirt. It comes complete with coordinating pink fabric for the ties and even has a pocket. You'll be twirling around the kitchen as you bake your cookies.

Monogrammed

Monogrammed apron

If something simple and practical is more your style, we are loving this gray monogrammed apron from Etsy shop Bow Peep Aprons. A little bow on the top adds just a touch of fun. If you'd prefer a little more color, the shop has several options to choose from, and you can customize your apron by selecting the color and style of the monogram as well as the color of the bow. With two huge pockets, this apron would be great as a crafting apron as well as one you cook in.

Pinup girl

Pin-up aprong

Who says you can't look sexy while you cook? This retro apron from Etsy shop Lover Dovers Clothing is made to look like a vintage pinup girl dress. You'll love the lace trim and the cute white apron sewn on that will make you feel like you are wearing a dress, not an apron. Grab your stilettos and start baking! Chevron and aqua

Chevron apron

We're pretty much in love with this chevron print apron with aqua accents from Etsy shop Mama Madison. The tiered skirt is full and bouncy giving it an ultra-feminine look. Veterans Day-worthy flicks

$

From the patriotic heroism to the harsh dilemmas and aftermath of war to everything in between, here's a list of movies to consider in light of Veterans Day.

Some war movies are all about the action and the glorified element of big-screen heroism. Some rely on the good guy-bad guy plot. Still, others delve into the complicated mind and heart of the soldier. Whatever your tastes, thank a vet this weekend and consider the sacrifices he or she has made that directly and indirectly influence each day of freedom we receive.

This list is composed of movies produced throughout many generations, but are listed chronologically based on the realities they aim to illustrate.

The Patriot

Roughly based upon the events of the American Revolution, Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger fight for a vision of what America could be. Gibson plays a badass father, Benjamin Martin, hell-bent on vindicating his sons and his fellow countrymen against the Red Coats. Again, not entirely true to history, but The Patriot serves as a solid reminder of the ideals freedom, equality, justice, opportunity, redemption that our country was birthed upon.

"I have long feared that my sins would return to visit me, and the cost is more than I can bear."— Martin

Glory

Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington bring to life the first formal African American U.S infantry unit, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The story shines light on the courage and sacrifice of the long-forgotten heroes of the Civil War and The Union soldiers.

"There's more to fighting than rest, sir. There's character. There's strength of heart. You should have seen us in action two days ago. We were a sight to see! We'll be ready, sir." Col. Shaw

Pearl Harbor

With an ensemble cast featuring Josh Hartnett, Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin, Kate Beckinsale, Jon Voight, Cuba Gooding Jr., and more, Pearl Harbor imagined a compelling tale of love and drama within the historic Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor historically accounts for the launching point of explicit American involvement in World War II.

"Some people frown on the Yanks for not being in this war. I'd just like to say that if there are any more back home like you, God help anyone who goes to war with America." Commander Tubbs

Band of Brothers

This 10-part miniseries offers a film interpretation of the real-life journey of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry, dubbed Easy Company, assigned to the 101st Airborne division of the U.S. Army efforts in WWII. From the landing on Normandy to the capitulation of Japan,Band of Brotherschronicles the fictionalized accounts of the company and offers extreme insight into the camaraderie of comrades and the injuries of war, both inside and out. The series was largely modeled off of the next film on our list, which we are sure you'll remember.

"The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it." — Spiers

Saving Private Ryan

Who could forget the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg-driven WWII movie, Saving Private Ryan? If this list was structured according to the sheer impact each film had, this would no doubt take the top spot. Saving Private Ryan assumes the perspective of US soldiers venturing behind enemy lines to rescue and retrieve the last- surviving brother of four servicemen. The film shines light on the struggle for glory, no man left behind, and the finalities of war.

"Well, what I mean by that, sir, is... if you was to put me and this here sniper rifle anywhere up to and including one mile of Adolf Hitler with a clear line of sight, sir... pack your bags, fellas, war's over. Amen." Private Jackson

The Great Escape

Steve McQueen leads a group of Allied POWs in an epic escape from a Nazi prisoner camp in WWII in this 1963 classic.

"It's possible for one man to get out through the wire, even get away, but there are in fact a considerable number of people besides yourself in this camp who are trying to escape." Bartlett

Platoon

Forest Whitaker, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, Johnny Depp, William Dafoe, Tom Beringer and more star in this Vietnam-based war movie that captures the moral crisis and horrors of the battlefield. It's easy to attribute the patriotism and glory to a war, but Platoon aims to discover the hardship that often comes with it.

"Somebody once wrote, 'Hell is the impossibility of reason.' That's what this place feels like. Hell." Chris Taylor

The Hurt Locker

This film chronicles the danger and everyday stress of a three-man bomb disposal unit in the Iraq War. Jeremy Renner, Brian Geraghty and Anthony Mackie take lead, exposing the imminent fragility of life and existence in modern warfare and urban combat.

"The rush of battle is a potent and often lethal addiction, for war is a drug."— opening scene

Now, there are many more war movies out there, and some may even be more entertaining from an action-packed-perspective but we have to make a fine distinction this Veterans Day.

We eat popcorn and enjoy the big explosions and epic fight scenes. For some people, that was a day in their actual lives.

Vets don't need sympathy. They want, instead, a sense of awareness and understanding from the citizens they serve to protect, as to the reality of life on the battlefield and the valleys and peaks that come with the turf.

Watch some of these films and consider thanking a man or woman in the service not only for your freedom, but for their sacrifice and journey through life.

Many times the battle follows to the home front.

Easy Wonton Pumpkin Ravioli

Use wonton wrappers in this recipe for easy pumpkin ravioli. They make the process super simple! Pumpkins are in season, and there are so many great ways to incorporate them into dinner. This recipe for easy wonton pumpkin ravioli is a fun way to serve dinner with a twist. Grab the kids and have them give you a hand putting together this fun, homemade meal!

Once you get the hang of making these little packaged goodies, there is no end to the possibilities you can stuff them with!

Easy wonton pumpkin ravioli

Serves 5

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese, more for serving
  • 8 ounces fresh arugula and spinach, torn into small pieces, plus 1/4 cup extra
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup toasted pumpkin seeds
  • 48 wonton wrappers
  • 4-6 tablespoons butter
  • A small cup of water for brushing wontons

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, ricotta cheese, one-third cup of the Parmesan cheese and the arugula and spinach.
  2. Add the lemon zest, salt and pepper to the pumpkin mixture and combine.
  3. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and have two damp towels on hand.
  4. Working quickly, add one teaspoon of the pumpkin mixture to the center of one wonton wrapper. Brush the edges with water.
  5. Top with a second wonton wrapper, and brush the edges with water. Use your fingers to seal each ravioli and squeeze out any air you can.
  6. Use a fork to firmly press and tightly seal the edges of each ravioli. Repeat this process for each ravioli and place on the baking sheet.
  7. Be sure to cover the ravioli on the baking sheet with the damp towel so they don't dry out.
  8. Bring a pot of water to boil. Working in small batches, approximately four or five ravioli, add to the boiling water, just for about two or three minutes, or until they float to the surface.
  9. Use a slotted spoon to carefully remove the ravioli from the water and set aside briefly.
  10. Meanwhile, add a few tablespoons of butter to a skillet over medium heat, then add four or five ravioli. Toss a little of the remaining arugula and spinach into the skillet, a bit for each batch.
  11. Swirl the ravioli in the butter until it begins to brown. Once browned, remove and serve with extra Parmesan cheese and garnish with the toasted pumpkin seeds.

Get ready for ravioli!

How to host a holiday potluck

Preparing an entire Thanksgiving meal by yourself can be stressful. Besides the big turkey that takes hours to roast, there are all the sides and desserts — not to mention the cleaning and prepping for guests. This year, make it easy on yourself by hosting a Thanksgiving potluck so that everyone contributes.

Besides being easier on the host, a Thanksgiving potluck can be a lot of fun. It gives everyone the opportunity to bring his or her favorite traditional dishes, combining cultures and backgrounds in one delicious feast.

Guest list

First, decide who to invite to your Thanksgiving potluck. Will it be friends, family or a mix? Whether you'll be hosting the same group as always or starting a new tradition with a new group, don't leave invitations to the last minute.

Get more tips for hosting a winning potluck>>

Get organized

Being organized is the key to a successful potluck. Although you can just ask everyone to bring something and see what happens, you don't want a Thanksgiving with 20 pies and no main course. Once you know who is coming, consider creating a sign-up sheet where everyone can list what they are bringing. Use a program like Google Docs so that everyone can access the list from wherever they are to see what everyone is making. Besides the turkey, there should be a few sides, bread or biscuits and desserts. Anyone who doesn't want to cook can bring beverages or sign up to help with clean up.

Prepare

On the day of the Thanksgiving potluck, as the host you need to anticipate your guests' needs. Some may need to finish assembling their dishes in your kitchen, and many may want to heat up what they've brought. Try to have your preparations finished by the time guests arrive so you have the space to accommodate everyone. Consider setting up some hot plates or chafing dishes to keep everything warm and clear out some space in your fridge for things people may bring that need to stay cool.

Be thankful

Sit down, enjoy the meal and be thankful that you have such wonderful friends and family with whom to share an incredible, collaborative meal. Ask everyone to go around and share what they're thankful for or tell stories about their favorite Thanksgiving traditions or childhood foods.

spray bottleClean up

The other great part about hosting a potluck is that there's more likely to be a joint cleanup effort. When everyone chips in, cleaning up can be quick and even fun!

Sally Field gained 25 pounds to win Lincoln role

$
0
0
The 66-year-old actress had a lot going against her when fighting for the role of Mary Todd Lincoln. But once she convinced Steven Spielberg it was her role, she had to do everything she could to portray the former first lady in the best way possible.

Sally Field

Sally Field worked hard to win the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Lincoln, and that dedication didn't end when she was given the role. The actress said she had to gain 25 pounds to look more like the former first lady.

"It was hard; it was very hard," Field told Jay Leno, according to Us Weekly. "It wasn't as much fun as you would think. First of all, it was horrifying because I'm of a certain age, and I kept thinking, 'If I don't do it right, I will drop dead halfway through this, and someone else will get the role!'"

The 66-year-old actress is more than 10 years older than her on-screen husband, Daniel Day-Lewis, so her on-screen appearance had to be genuine. When President Lincoln died, he was almost the exact age Day-Lewis is now, but Mary Todd Lincoln was only 46 years old, which is 20 years younger than Field. The differences put the pressure on Field to look more like her character.

"I tried to do it healthy, [but] I understand there isn't any way to do it healthy," she said. "I ate brown rice and these protein drinks made out of stuff called ProGain... Oh God, it was just disgusting. I never had a fun meal, basically. It just was discipline."

The weight loss was more difficult than the weight gain, and Field is still feeling it. She made sure to do it the right way, but gaining 25 pounds all at once isn't something any body expects.

"I stopped eating, and I'm hungry now," Field joked to Leno, according to Us Weekly. "It took me about six months to gain it and about a year to lose it. I began to work out like a mad fiend. I had two trainers. I really worked out hard, four times a week. I eventually had to have knee surgery. My little frame couldn't hold this amount of weight."

Lincoln opened on Friday in select locations, and it will open nationwide Friday, Nov. 16.

Skyfall breaks records with a $87.8 million opening weekend

$
0

Experts knew the film would do well, but no one expected it to do this well. Skyfall now has the highest-selling opening weekend of any James Bond film in history.

Skyfall

Estimates for Skyfall at the box office this weekend were around $70 million. But the studio was less confident, only predicting $67 million . Now it looks like those estimates have been shattered. According to Business Week, the film brought in $87.8 million over the weekend, the largest opening weekend so far for any James Bond film.

"Skyfall benefited from positive reviews. In the film, Bond is assumed dead after being shot accidentally by an MI6 colleague," said Business Week."After a surprise return, he battles a new villain, played by Javier Bardem, who has kidnapped agency chief M, portrayed by Judi Dench, and stolen a list of Western intelligence agents."

The production cost for the film was $200 million, meaning it's possible it will make the money back in domestic sales within a few weeks. But when foreign sales are taken into account, the film has already brought in almost $519 million.

"Skyfall's prospects are buoyed by its massive showing overseas, where it began rolling out two weeks ago," said the Hollywood Reporter.

In comparison, Quantum of Solace also cost $200 million to make, but it only brought in $168 million in its lifetime domestically and around $586 in total sales. The films, with Daniel Craig as James Bond, have far outsold any other Bond film in the franchise's 50-year history.

"With just a little tug of his shirt cuff, Daniel Craig unseats Sean Connery as cinema's best James Bond," Bloomberg Muse critic Greg Evans wrote, according to Business Week.

Wreck-It Ralph secured the second-place spot at the box office over the weekend, bringing in $33 million. And Flight fell to third place, with $15 million.

Lincoln, though it opened in only 11 theaters, brought in an amazing $900,000. Based on that number, there is a good chance the Steven Spielberg film will knock Skyfall off the top when it is released nationwide Friday, Nov. 16.

How cancer changes caregivers

$
0
0
You may feel that it goes without saying that caring for a cancer patient changes your life. Yet the breadth and magnitude of the changes is something that cannot be underestimated. Through interviews with 86 caregivers and many more informal conversations with caregivers, I found the following profound changes that resulted from their caregiving experiences.

Man with cancer and his wife

Appreciation of inner strength

One of the most profound experiences for many caregivers is that they discovered their true inner strength. The greater the intensity of the caregiving experience, the more self-affirming they found it, despite their anxieties along the way. They describe themselves as stronger, wiser and more self-confident.

The ability to maintain hope

"Caregivers describe themselves as stronger, wiser, and more self-confident."

Caregiving toughened them, deepened their inner resources and demonstrated their stamina beyond their own expectations. They discovered that they could sustain the level of effort required and navigate the ever-changing challenges while maintaining hope. They learned to partner with the various specialists — complete strangers whose skills and commitment were essential to their abilities to sustain hope. And they found new ways to maintain fragments of normalcy from their lives before cancer.

Patience, compassion and giving back

Many caregivers found that their experiences increased their compassion for those facing similar challenges. Most said that now they savor every moment, are more sympathetic to others’ feelings and needs, and are eager to make the caregiving trip a little easier for others. Here are a few examples:

Annie’s husband admitted, “I’d been a very impatient man. I was probably like a charging bull. But I learned to slow down and I learned to have some sympathy — to put myself in other people’s moccasins for a little while and to think how I’d like to be treated if I was in their shoes.” He hopes in the future to apply his caregiving-acquired paramedic skills to help other caregivers.

Susan’s daughters and Jen P.’s husband have been raising money and awareness to fight brain tumors. “We’ve turned this horrible thing that’s affected us into a charity to help others in the local area," explains Jen's husband. "A lot of our healing has been helping others.”

Michael L.’s mom has channeled her gratitude for Michael’s survival into helping others. “Michael is a sign of hope for others. . . . It’s important to show parents that other parents understand what they’re going through.” Jeff’s mother celebrates her son’s survival through advocacy, educating legislators about the issues that matter to cancer patients and their families.

For all, it was about illuminating caregiving’s uncertain path to make it easier for new caregivers.

Rediscovering normalcy

The return to normal life has posed challenges for many caregivers because the adrenaline rush was over. Yet it also generates commitment to wringing every ounce of joy out of their lives. Caregivers say they now cherish every day, given the realization that it could all disappear in a moment. They enjoy a second chance with their loved ones as they recover their own personal equilibrium. They “don’t’ sweat the small stuff” as they did in life before cancer and they set priorities differently.

Embracing what matters

Caregiving has helped people confront what really matters. They leave the isolation of the cancer experience behind and re-engage with their families and their communities. They greet life with gusto. They travel and read and socialize, sometimes far more than in the past. And they willingly share their experiences, convinced that their lives have been enriched regardless of the outcome of their caregiving.

Celebrate instead of mourn losses

Their celebration of life doesn’t mean that they don't mourn their losses, but rather that they are committed to appreciating what they have. For Carl, who survived cancer, and his wife, it means returning to the swimming they both enjoy, despite Carl’s loss of one leg to bone cancer. For Tim’s wife, it means remarrying seven years after his death: “I never thought I’d fall in love again. It doesn’t mean that I’ll ever stop loving Tim, but it means I can still live a full life.”

Caregiving is ultimately a gift

Cancer caregiving is something that falls into your lap, with a punch. Once the smoke of the battle has cleared, most caregivers turn the experience into something positive, reminding us all of the resilience that brings hope to the darkest moments and the love that inspired their caregiving in the first place.

6 Tips for women's brain health

Recent news reports say that stress might cause women’s brains to age more rapidly. Boost your brain power

Recent news reports say that stress might cause women’s brains to age more rapidly. Add that to nutrient-deficient diets, lack of exercise and daily exposure to toxins and it’s a perfect storm for mental function decline. But there are steps women can take to keep theirs brain active, strong and healthy.

Exercise your body for a strong mind

Twenty percent – that’s the proportion of blood flowing from the heart that goes to our brains. Exercise increases heart health, which in turn ensures your brain gets the oxygen and nutrients it needs. Perform exercises that increase cardiovascular health, such as aerobics, yoga and brisk walking.

salmonEat right

Our brains consume a great deal of our bodies' overall resources. The foods we eat directly impact the brain’s ability to function at the highest level. Eat poorly and your memory, attention and focus will suffer. Diets with lots of fish, olive oil, fruits and vegetables have been found to deliver more omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and B vitamins to both the heart and brain. Processed foods and sugars don’t provide a continual flow of nutrients, especially B vitamins. Lack of thiamin, niacin, folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 has been implicated in mental health issues.

Think supplements

Even the best diet may not provide the brain with the right amounts of vitamins and nutrients. That’s why it’s wise to consider including dietary supplements in your daily routine. A B vitamin supplement will keep levels of nutrients such as folate in optimal ranges. Another key nutrient is citicoline, which has specific effects on the health and function of nerve cells. However, we likely can’t get enough of this vital nutrient from the foods we eat. Middle-aged women in a recent study I conducted took a citicoline supplement and saw significant improvements in their focus, attention and recall.

Get the stress out

Life seems to get more stressful with every passing day. Work requires more of our attention. Household demands never seem to ebb. Women have become the ultimate multitaskers, and it takes a toll on our brains. Stress can cause problems with heart function, immune defense and overall mental well-being. The more we can reduce tension, the more efficiently our brains can process information and the easier it will be to keep our lives in balance. Build quiet time into each day. Meditation is a great way to relax and shut out distractions. Physical and mental exercises can help redirect negative energies into more positive outcomes.

Avoid toxins

Remember those TV commercials that showed a hot frying pan and an egg dropped in it? “This is your brain. …This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?” It’s true. Toxins of all types — drugs, alcohol, pollution, and pesticides — can impact the brain’s ability to function at its highest level. We can’t avoid all the toxic things in life, but by avoiding substances that directly hurt our brains we can ensure longer and more productive brain function and better memory, attention and recall.

Challenge your brain

Like any other part of our body, the brain needs exercise. Though it benefits from physical exercise, the brain also needs mental challenges to keep it sharp. Any activity that requires deeper thought or increased focus/attention is ideal. Do a crossword or sudoku puzzle. Play memory games that are easily downloaded as mobile applications or go the old-fashioned route and buy a memory board game. There are myriad ways to stimulate the 100 billion neurons in your brain. Have fun!

Javier Bardem has to be on top of the world. He is in the top movie in the country, which opened at the same time he was given his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Javier Barden

Javier Bardem had a big weekend. Not only was he a part of the biggest movie of the weekend, Skyfall, but he also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Bardem's star is located in front of the El Capitan theater.

"The event helped to drum up buzz for the release of the new James Bond film, Skyfall, which hit theaters Friday and features Bardem as villain Silva," said CBS News. "The Oscar-winning actor was joined on Hollywood Boulevard by director Sam Mendes and his Bond castmates Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe."

Bardem hasn't been among the Hollywood elite for very long. Many moviegoers have their first memories of him from the 2007 film No Country for Old Men. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in that movie.

"Javier Bardem Day. That's so cool," the actor said to E! News. "And what's that like? Does everyone have to walk with a broken nose around Hollywood Boulevard?"

Bardem was referring to an incident from a few years ago, when his nose was damaged in a bar brawl.

Skyfall earned an estimated $87.8 million over the weekend, making it the number-one film of the weekend . It has also been given the honor of having the highest-selling first weekend of any James Bond film in history.

Skyfall director Sam Mendes said Bardem was "so embarrassed" to be given the star, according to CBS News, but accepted the honor nonetheless.

The actor will next be appearing in The Counselor, alongside Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. The film is directed by Ridley Scott.

According to the Internet Movie Database, the film is about a lawyer who "finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking."

The Counselor is set to be released in 2013.

Justin Bieber not ready to move on from Selena Gomez

News of the breakup between one of the most powerful young couples in Hollywood shocked the world , but is the relationship really over? Bieber doesn't seem to think so.

Selena Justin

Within hours of the news that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had broken up, the rumors started. Bieber went on a talk show Saturday to clear things up — sort of.

"I don't know what to say," the singer told Open House Party radio host John Garabedian in an interview Saturday, according to Us Weekly. "I don't know what's going on in my life... To even assess that, it doesn't make sense, 'cause I have not made any comment."

Bieber did take to Twitter over the weekend. He sent out some tweets Saturday and Sunday, giving a little insight into his state of mind.

"thank u Boston," he tweeted after his concert. "focused on the positive. #30MillionBeliebers with me. Im never leaving u because u r always there 4 me. love u. Night."

Sunday, his post was slightly more insightful than the first one, reminding everyone of what his fans mean to him.

"regardless of what happens i see all of the tweets and all the love you guys are sending me. thank u. love u too," he said.

Meanwhile, TMZ is reporting that it was Gomez who did the breaking up and that Bieber is already confident they will get back together.

"Justin would like to get back with Selena and thinks it can happen," said the gossip website. "We're told the way Justin sees it... they've broken up a bunch of times before, and this is just another blip. We're told he's not freaked out... he thinks there's a good chance they'll make up."

TMZ also mentions that, despite rumors, the Biebs is single. There is a photo floating around of him and Victoria's Secret model Barbara Pavlin , but TMZ assures his fans they are not dating.

Gomez has been staying pretty quiet on the subject. She tweeted Sunday about attending an event at a Kmart in White Plains, New York — but otherwise, she hasn't said much about the breakup. Production on her TV series Wizards of Waverly Place wrapped early in November, and she has been in New York since then.

Bitter Twitter: Kat Von D tweets her regret over Deadmau5

Kat Von D and DJ Deadmau5 broke up this weekend. Von D took to Twitter to tweet her very bitter feelings toward her ex-boyfriend.

Kat Von D single: breaks up with boyfriend Deadmau5

Kat Von D is officially single. Von D took to her Twitter account on Saturday and made it clear she and famous DJ Deadmau5 had broken up recently. Von D didn't shy away from revealing her negative feelings toward Deadmau5 in an awkward, TMI-style Twitter rant.

Kat Von D calls out Jesse James on his cheating ways>>

"Man...Can't say I didn't give it my best," tweeted Von D. "Man, I sure was wrong. But at least he made it a no-brainer to break that off. #lessonlearned"

Kat Von D went on to offer more information about her and Deadmau5's split.

"Now, we can get all of the 'I told you so's' outta the way…And move on," she said. She continued, "Clarification: Deadmau5 and I are no longer together."

OK, Von D, we get it. You are single, and you really, really don't like your ex-boyfriend right now.

Kat Von D's career change: Music>>

Deadmau5 was not to be outdone by Kat Von D's Twitter confessions. The DJ also took to his Twitter stage to let his followers know he really messed up his relationship with Kat Von D.

"Going to spend a little while screwing my head back on. I guess I'm not cut out for relationships right now," said Deadmau5 on Saturday. "I'll figure it out. No hard feelings."

Really? Does Deadmau5 follow Kat Von D's Twitter feed? She certainly seems to have some hard feelings toward him.

The love lost between Kat Von D and Deadmau5 took an honestly sad turn when Deadmau5 hinted at darker demons that ruined their relationship.

"It happened too fast, I lost my balance and fell into a familiar dark place that I'm having difficulty with," he tweeted. "She deserves someone stronger."

Is it infidelity, drug addiction or something else that is Deadmau5's "familiar dark place"? Fans who want more details on the breakup will be disappointed.

Deadmau5 closed his Twitter relationship confessional with, "...and thats it for the personal stuff...on with our regularly scheduled deadmau5 crap."

Well, I guess we know for sure that Kat Von D is single, but there's no telling who her next boyfriend-of-the-month will be.

Top 10

Find out what topped the charts this weekend!

1

Skyfall

Daniel Craig and the latest installment of James Bond absolutely dominated this weekend's box office with a whopping $88 million. Bond may be a secret agent, but there was nothing covert about the No. 1 spot this time around!

2

Wreck-It Ralph

John C. Reilly and the animated world of Wreck-It Ralph had another solid weekend, landing second place with $33 million. Ralph is a video game villain looking for a change of face. He's tired of being the bad guy and wants to try his hands at something nice for a change.

3

Flight

Denzel Washington managed to stay at the top with a $15 million weekend. Flight tells the story of a heroic pilot who undergoes major scrutiny on account of alcohol and other substances that turn up in his system after he manages to crash-land a malfunctioning aircraft and save nearly everyone on board.

4

Argo

Ben Affleck and his crew of faux-filmmakers dropped down a spot with Argo, but they still sit pretty comfortable in fourth place.

5

Taken 2

Taken2 stayed put for the second week in a row at No. 5 on the list with $4 million.

6

Here Comes the Boom

Here Comes the Boom was the big surprise this week, moving up from the No. 9 spot to our No. 6. It appears Kevin James isn't done fighting just yet. Join him on his journey to mixed martial arts in search of a redeeming cause to salvage his school.

7

Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas continued on its downward spiral moving to this week's No. 7 seat. We had higher hopes for the Tom Hanks/Halle Berry film.

8

Pitch Perfect

Pitch Perfect came out of left field this week actually landing a seat within the top 10. Critics claim Rebel Wilson is amazing and keeps audiences laughing the whole time.

9

Man with the Iron Fists

Man with the Iron Fists— perhaps RZA should have kept to his rap roots. This martial arts film hasn't really caught any momentum since its premiere and it's probably safe to say this isn't the fight the film was going for.

10

Hotel Transylvania

Adam Sandler, aka Dracula, rounded up the list in last place. With winter just around the corner, things may be getting a bit too cold for the Halloween context.

How to prevent oily bangs

We're partnering up with some of the hair industry's top talents to bring you answers to your most pressing hair questions. Up today? Justine Piecuch, a stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, is showing us how to prevent oily bangs.

Your question

"I have bangs and they always get oily and stringy from the oils on my face. How can I prevent this?"

Justine's answer!

Bangs actually are extremely high maintenance. The one thing I would recommend before getting them is to think about how much you're willing to deal with. If you tend to have an oily scalp, oily skin or tend to sweat a lot, they may not be for you.

It's tough, since bangs are right there in front of your face, there seems to be a constant need to touch them. The oils from your fingertips will cause them to get greasy and this usually seems to be the culprit. Try to avoid any contact!! Try brushing them with a boar's hair brush throughout the day. This helps to distribute the oils from the scalp throughout the hair which is very healthy.

If you're lazy and don't feel like completely shampooing and styling your hair, just shampoo the bangs daily, making sure to never condition them. They don't need it, EVER! There's a natural keratin on the first couple of inches of the hair, which is there to protect. Adding the conditioner will make them even oilier!

If none of this works and you're in a seasonal climate, try sticking to bangs when it's not hot and muggy out. Weather will always make things miserable. Try carrying around dry shampoo and hit this area when it gets real bad. It'll save you from the worst of times. Bangs are tough — it always seems like the second you grow them out, you forget how painful it is and give them a good chop again. With that said, they are the best accessory and always complete a look. Just have some patience and keep trying to get the right fix with them.

Veterans Day via the television: The lazy way to appreciate

$

Once the flags are pulled from the earth and the last siren from the parade has turned off, that doesn't mean it's no longer important to remember our veterans. Check out one of these shows on Veterans Day, but continue watching to keep our soldiers in your thoughts.

Soldiers in Afghanistan with POTUS

A new crop of veterans is coming home. They're no longer just our fathers and grandfathers, but our best friends, siblings and boyfriends/girlfriends. As they file off those massive planes, they're coming from a place that is not just geographically distant, but also mentally and emotionally foreign to civilians. They've not only risked their lives, but they've taken others'. We may never fully understand what they've gone through, but there might be a way to at least get a vague idea. This Veterans Day, track down one of these war-related shows and miniseries. They won't scar you , but they'll certainly move you.

Generation Kill's Alexander SkarsgardGeneration Kill

Following the actual story of our first 40 days in Iraq through the eyes of the Marines of First Recon Battalion, Generation Kill might be, for a lot of us, as close as it gets to being there ourselves. The seven-part miniseries is based on the reports of Evan Wright, an embedded journalist who not only wrote a book by the same name, but also has a series of his reports published in Rolling Stone. Among other things, Generation Kill is a prime example that the guys fighting and coming home are often young enough to be our little brothers. Guys like Iceman may seem cool, but they're just the geeky boys who grew up down the hall.

Army Wives' Drew FullerArmy Wives

Have you ever wondered what life was truly like for those sobbing men and women you see on the news before they were turned into grieving widows/widowers and mourning mothers and fathers? Army Wives is a great way to step inside the rather elusive lives of military families. Experience their triumphs and struggles, their waiting, their not-knowing, and their finding out. More family drama and less war-drama, Army Wives is a show about the friendships created on base by the wives of our country's heroes and how, in a way, those significant others are heroes in their own right. The wives are currently filming their eighth season, too, so there's plenty to watch and witness.

Carrie Mathison, HomelandHomeland

Homeland summed up in three words: Shocking,  sexy and terrifying. Homeland follows Carrie Mathison and her bosses at the CIA as they work with a recently recovered soldier, Brody, who was MIA in Iraq for eight years. When a source tells Carrie that a "turned" soldier will be returning home to carry out a terrorist attack, all signs point to Sgt. Brody. Here's the thing, though: Carrie is far from a stable person and a quasi-relationship soon forms. Expect to say something along the lines of, "I don't care if he might be a terrorist... I'd still tap that!" But, don't feel bad, all Homeland-ers can attest to those feelings.

MASH castM*A*S*H

Still regularly showing in syndicate on multiple channels, M*A*S*H is still one of the best wartime comedy/dramas available for viewing. Whether it's the tear-jerking episode where Col. Blake dies or the infuriating episode where someone reports that Hawkeye is dead , M*A*S*H highlights the frustrations of being far from home that so many people have never experienced. All while, of course, following the hijinx of Hawkeye and Honeycutt , and the constant missteps of Radar and Klinger.
