The best nursing bras for plus-sized moms

$
0
0

Many moms revel in their larger breasts while pregnant or nursing a baby. But it can be hard to find a properly fitting nursing bra that's not only comfortable but also stylish when your breasts are supersized. If you've shopped for plus size nursing bras only to find out the size only goes up to a D cup, look no further.

Plus-sized breasts need special nursing bras

Judy P. Masucci, Ph.D. and owner of A Mother's Boutique explains, "When you start nursing, your breasts get heavier, so they can become very uncomfortable if they aren't supported properly. And wearing the wrong sized bra can not only be very uncomfortable, but it can also cause a whole other host of problems like clogged ducts or mastitis. When you have a larger bust, you need to make sure that you are wearing a bra that offers you enough support."

Get the right fit for your plus size nursing bra

It's worth taking the time — even spending a bit more money — to work with an expert bra fitter who has experience with nursing bras.

Mom Heather says, "I'm a 36GG. The best thing I did for myself was to get a professional measurement at Nordstrom. I had been to lingerie stores and measured but the staff in those places didn't really know anything about fit the way that they do at Nordstrom. I had been wearing a 40H and had back pain. When I went to Nordstrom and got fit properly, my back pain went away. I have a couple of underwire nursing bras from Elomi that fit great and work great. They've held up really well for me. Once I was able to find the proper size, I found better sports bras too — Panache has been great."

Can't find an expert nursing bra fitter nearby? Don't worry. Masucci offers a virtual bra fitting service.

More large cup size nursing bra favorites

One of the plus size nursing bra brands Masucci recommends is Cake. "Cake Lingerie specializes in making women feel beautiful," she says. "But unlike other manufacturers of beautiful nursing bras, Cake's bras are also supportive and they accommodate large cup sizes with support and beauty. Many Cake bras start at a B or C cup and go up to a J or K cup." She also likes Bella Materna, "Some of their styles go up to an H cup and they are the only manufacturer to make a flexible sized maternity/nursing bra that can accommodate up to a J cup."

Bottom line? No matter what letter your cup size is in the alphabet, there are great options available for plus size nursing bras.

Here's to your breasts being comfortable and supported while nursing your baby!

Startling documentary examines America's sky-high C-section rates

C-section documentary

C-section documentary

In the early 1970s, the C-section rate was a startlingly low five percent. These days? It hovers right around 33 percent of all births. In fact, C-sections are the most common operating room procedure — out of all surgeries.

And now, a new documentary by The New Yorker is asking the tough question of why?

You know there's a reason for alarm when the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) takes notice. In a March 2014 report on C-sections, they noted that while the surgery can be undoubtedly life-saving for a mother and fetus, the dramatic increase in the rates of C-sections since 1996 alone points to a problem. And while we could argue that the C-section rate is completely justifiable — bigger babies, more complications and increased numbers of "high risk" mothers — there is no denying that in many cases, C-sections are generally not the ideal method for giving birth.

The risks of major surgery

A C-section surgery carries major risks on its own, including uterine rupture, hysterectomy, cardiac arrest, hemorrhage for the mother and intracranial hemorrhages for the baby. As the ACOG pointed out, one of the most alarming reasons for concern is the mere fact that despite that dramatic leap in the number of operations, there hasn't really been a decrease in maternal or fetal morbidity. So all those "emergency" C-sections that supposedly saved the life of a mom and/or her baby? Maybe not so life-saving after all.

The documentary

An Unnecessary Cut? follows Chileshe Nkonde-Price, a cardiologist at the University of Pennsylvania and a mother of one who is planning a VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section).

"Something is wrong," says Neel Shah, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Boston in the documentary. "We don't know what the optimal number is, but... it's hard to believe that one-third of human beings need major surgery."

Comic-Con 2014: The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus on future romance

$

You've seen that explosive new trailer, right? >>

But, then again, maybe not. During Comic-Con, AMC released a brand-new trailer for Season 5 that blew off the faces of everyone who saw it. It was, perhaps, the most in-depth season-long trailer we'd seen. And, yes, we saw Beth. Are the writers finally going to give us what we want?

"You know, I wonder how much the writers pay attention to that and the producers pay attention to that," Reedus said. "I, of course, get inundated with that on an insane level. But, I wonder how much the behind-the-scenes brains pay attention."

"I don't think it really does," said director and executive producer Greg Nicotera. "When they pitched Season 4, they were talking about when the prison goes down and having Daryl and Beth be bunkered together. And it's interesting because I get to see all the cuts and I see all the edits from the director's cuts onward. And I loved the scene in the kitchen when they're talking, and I got the sense that Daryl was starting to kind of fall in love with Beth a little."

Our thoughts on Deth/Baryl >>

When Reedus got the script, did he think anything would happen with Daryl and Beth? Does he want them to hook up and get it over with, or does he want something deeper for his character?

"This is how I took it, doing it. I took it like, if Daryl had feelings for Beth, he didn't understand them," explained Reedus. "So he was like a child, like, 'I don't understand what this means.' But, it was more intimate than a coupling."

Nicotera agreed with that sentiment and seemed to think Reedus nailed it perfectly in that scene.

"That's what made it effective," complimented Nicotera. "When you're standing there listening to her play piano, you're just standing there watching her. And you feel like he's thinking, 'This may be the last living person I ever see.' So, I thought that was a really great connection. A lot of it wasn't in the script. The script wasn't like, 'Beth and Daryl totally hook up.' It wasn't there. But when I watched the episode, I felt I kind of wanted that, which was what he brings to it and what Emily brought to it."

Of course, nothing lasts forever in the world of The Walking Dead, and soon we all thought Beth was gone forever. Now that Beth is actually still alive, what does Reedus want for his character?

"I'm hoping for a threesome in this season," Reedus teased. "Me and Beth and Carol. The trifecta."

That could be interesting — though we could think of some other steamy combinations, too. What do you want for The Walking Dead Season 5? Tell us below!

Starz's Outlander trailer: Claire Randall's fallen through time >>

The 1:30 trailer was released during the Outlander panel at Comic-Con this year, which featured executive producer Ronald D. Moore, bestselling author of the book Diana Gabaldon and cast members Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish and Lotte Verbeek.

Moore is clearly excited and proud of his new story. In fact, he showed up to the Comic-Con panel in a kilt. Gabaldon praised the executive producer. "I said this is the only thing based on my work that I've ever seen that didn't make me turn white or burst into flame," the author told the audience.

Katherine Heigl to star in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander? >>

Dress-up at the panel isn't the only fun this show is having. Starz has also set up a castle and standing stones as a showpiece on the Comic-Con exhibit floor, complete with people dressed up in period attire.

The series follows Claire Randall (Balfe), a married combat nurse in 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. Aside from her life being instantly threatened in this new world, Claire is also pushed into an unlikely love triangle spanning centuries when she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Heughan), who Starz describes as a "chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior." We'd say, from the looks of the trailer, Heughan definitely fits that bill.

Black Sails review: The hunt for pirate treasure is on >>

"I don't think of it as a man's show or a woman's show," Moore said during the panel, according to Hypable. "It's just a ripping good yarn."

Katy Perry gets caught in "Dark Horse" lawsuit >>

While certain charts report success based on respective countries, YouTube's recent unveil is a good ranking of songs that dominated computer screens on a worldwide level. Following Ms. Perry is none other than Shakira with her girl-on-girl video featuring Rihanna ("Can't Remember to Forget You") and her World Cup rendition of her song "La La La." That's right — Shak nabs both the second and third spots. It goes to show that even if these songs didn't make an impressive impact in the United States, the videos for the tracks were clearly watched over and over again.

Music review: Do Shakira and Rihanna have chemistry? >>

Iggy Azalea's video for "Fancy," a tribute to '90s cult film Clueless, also appears on the list, as does the sing-along video of "Let It Go" from Disney's mega-successful ice princess flick Frozen. Even though it might be one of the cheapest music videos released this year, the Chainsmokers' "#Selfie" rounds out the list with a whopping 183 million views, proving that modern youthful arrogance isn't going anywhere.

Even though 2014 is more than halfway over, there's still plenty of time for this list to change by December, especially with heavy hitters like Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Usher dropping new music later this year.

Paris Hilton and Hannah Ferguson team up for Carl's Jr. ad

Oh, poor Paris Hilton: Her sex tape left her unable to trust >>

Nine years after Hilton turned heads for her solo commercial for the fast food giant, she has returned to help out another blonde bombshell. In the 30-second ad, Sports Illustrated model Hannah Ferguson dons a barely-there black bikini and begins to wash one filthy truck. After cleaning up the ride, Ferguson decides that she deserves a nice meal for her hard work, and what better meal than the latest addition to the Carl's Jr. menu: the Texas BBQ thickburger. After one of the sandwich's jalapeno straws drops on the truck, Ms. Hilton arrives at the barn in an equally sizzling bikini number and gives the model a piece of criticism. "You missed a spot," she says.

Much like Hilton's ad, entitled "I Love Paris," this commercial also has a theme — it's called "I Love Texas." An unsurprising but fitting choice.

5 Reasons Paris Hilton's new video is awesomely bad >>

Hilton's reunion with the burger chain isn't too surprising if you follow her on Instagram. Just two days ago, the socialite posted some behind-the-scenes shots of her and Ferguson doing what they do best. In the photo, Hilton is posing next to the cleaned-up truck as her co-star holds one last bite of her snack.

Florida woman ordered to have a C-section against her will

$
0
0

I honestly thought I was reading a satire article from The Onion when I read about a mother being forced into a C-section by a hospital and a judge. But it's really happening. How outrageous is this? Jennifer Goodall, who has had three prior C-sections, wants to do a trial of labor in hopes of a vaginal birth. Unfortunately, her care providers have informed her that this is not okay.

C-section surgery against a mother's will

Disturbing, right? And it gets even worse. A press release issued by National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW) states that her prenatal care providers intend to seek a court order to perform surgery with — or without — her consent. They also plan to report her to the Department of Children and Family Services, thereby threatening the custody of her children. In response, the NAPW, in conjunction with Florida attorney Patricia E. Kahn, filed a complaint at the federal level hoping for a temporary restraining order. This would prevent the hospital from carrying out these threats, but the complaint was denied by Federal District Judge John E. Steele.

Breaking the Silence

Breaking the Silence

A disturbing violation of ethics

Doctors and other medical professionals can give you guidance and they can recommend for and against specific procedures. However, they cannot force you to undergo surgery or any other procedure if you do not want it. They cannot even force you to stay in a hospital if you want to leave. Threatening Goodall with legal action if she tries to have a vaginal birth is not only crazy, it's frightening.

She, like every other human being, is entitled to body autonomy because pregnancy doesn't render an adult woman without rights. She ultimately has the final say over what is and isn't done to her own body. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology Committee on Ethics writes, "Justice requires that a pregnant woman, like any other individual, retain the basic right to refuse medical intervention, even if the intervention is in the best interest of her fetus."

Goodall writes that instead of respecting her wishes, the hospital has instilled fear. I honestly cannot imagine being in her position. This bewildering series of events is hard to comprehend, but she's acting with bravery and intelligence.

Improving Birth has outlined how you can help — check their Facebook event page (#JenniferIsNotAlone) to see how to get involved.

5 Ways to wear metallic eyeliner

The triangle

The Triangle

Step 1:

The Triangle Step 1: Draw along lash line

Take a metallic eyeliner pencil (creamy pencils glide on easiest); starting at the outer corner of your eye, draw a line along your lash line and stop halfway across.

Step 2:

The Triangle Step 2: Draw second line

Draw a second line along your bottom lash line and stop halfway across (mimicking what you did on the top).

Step 3:

The Triangle: Close up

The eyeliner shape should look like a sideways triangle. This shape is unique and fun, but doesn't scream eyeliner!

Undereye

Undereye

Step 1:

Undereye Step 1: Draw straight line across your lower lash

Draw a straight line across your lower lash line only (starting at the outer corner going inward works best).

Step 2:

Undereye Step 1: Go over twice for intense color

Go over the line twice for more intense color.

Step 3:

Undereye: finished

Crease

Crease

Step 1:

Crease Step 1: Draw thick line along the crease

Starting at the outer corner of your eye, draw a thick line along the crease of your eyelid with the eyeliner. (Tip: use a waterproof eyeliner. It's helpful to apply an eyeshadow primer first to prevent natural eye oils from smearing the eyeliner throughout the day.) The shape of this line should be slightly curved, like a half moon.

Step 2:

Crease Step 2: Repeat on the other eye

Repeat this line on the other eye. Go back over for more intense color.

Step 3:

Crease Step 3: Finished

This look is an unexpected fun pop, especially when you look down.

Top lid

Step 1.

Top Lid Step1: Apply a straight line to top lid only

Make a thick straight line along your top lashes only. Make the line thick enough so the eyeliner is visible when your eye is open. This application lets you rock the trend in a classy way.

Step 2:

Top Lid Step 2: Apply to other eye

Repeat this line on the other eye.

Step 3:

Top Lid Step 3: Finished

Inner rims

Inner Rims

Step 1:

Inner rim Step 1:apply to inner rim of your bottom lashline

Take your metallic eyeliner and line only the inner rim of your bottom lashline (you may need to go over two times to make the liner pop).

Step 2:

Inner rim Step 2: apply to other eye

Repeat this motion on the top inner rim of your lashline. (Tip: it's easiest if you tip your head back and gently pull the eyelid up, while looking into a mirror.)

Step 3:

Inner rim Step 3: Finished

You can wear this liner look alone or combine with any eyeshadow. Wearing metallic eyeliner only on your inner rims gives your eyes a subtle but sassy pop.

Cantaloupe cake bites that look and taste like the real thing

Do you love all the melons that come out in the summer? I mean, I love watermelon as much as the next person, but cantaloupe is one of my favorites too. Why is it always left out of the treat fun? Google "watermelon treats," and you'll find a million recipe ideas at your fingertips, but there are far fewer for cantaloupe. So to change that, I bring you cantaloupe cake bites.

Cantaloupe shaped and flavored cake bites

They look and taste like cantaloupe too. Well, as much as they can, since cantaloupe has such a subtle flavor. These do use fresh cantaloupe, which are cooked down to intensify the flavor.

Cantaloupe shaped and flavored cake bites

The cantaloupe reduction is added to the cake batter to flavor the bites. Use the baked cake to make the cake bites (crumble up the cake, adding a little frosting to allow you to roll them into balls). Then they are dipped in light green melting candy wafers (to look like the green part of the cantaloupe rind).

Cantaloupe shaped and flavored cake bites

See? Cantaloupe can be fun too.

Cantaloupe shaped and flavored cake bites

Cantaloupe cake bites recipe

Yields 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chopped fresh cantaloupe, very ripe
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Boxed white cake mix, plus the ingredients called for
  • 1/2 cup vanilla frosting
  • About 1 cup each candy melts in peach, light green and white
  • Vegetable oil

Directions:

For the cantaloupe reduction

  1. To a stovetop saucepan, add the cantaloupe.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the pan.
  3. Heat on low-medium, mixing until the cantaloupe reduces down to about 1/2 cup.

For the cake bites

  1. Mix together the ingredients for the boxed cake mix. Take about 3 cups of the batter, and add 3/4 of the cantaloupe reduction to it. Bake in the oven according to the box directions. (I baked it as cupcakes, and this amount made 6 cupcakes.)
  2. Once the cupcakes have cooled, remove the liners, and add the cupcakes to a bowl. Crumble up the cupcakes, and add the frosting and the rest of the cantaloupe reduction.
  3. Roll into balls (6 to 8, depending on the size).
  4. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the green candy melts according to the package directions. Dip the cake bites into the melted candy to coat them. (It can be a little messy, but that's OK for this layer.)
  5. Freeze the cake balls for 2 hours.
  6. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white and peach melting candy wafers according to the package directions. Add a little vegetable shortening to the mix (about 1 teaspoon) to make the candy more fluid. This will help to create a smoother coating.
  7. Remove the cake bites from the freezer, and immediately dip them into the peach-colored candy. Coat well.
  8. Once the candy has hardened, enjoy your cantaloupe cake bites.

I was always the kid who actually loved lima beans. I know there are lots of jokes about kids hating them, but not me. I would also happily eat most every other vegetable placed in front of me. While I'm not sure I could actually survive as a vegan, I'm happy I at least love vegetables. This vegan summer succotash is packed full of quick-sautéed vegetables and fresh, crunchy vegetables, and is then drizzled with a homemade almond butter dressing.

Vegan summer succotash

Vegan summer succotash recipe

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil plus extra as needed, divided
  • 3 bell peppers, sliced
  • 2 large carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 (12 ounce) bag frozen lima beans
  • 1 cup frozen corn
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • 1/2 cup halved cherry tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup sliced radishes
  • 2 small zucchini squashes, julienned with a julienne peeler
  • 1/2 cup alfalfa sprouts
  • 3 tablespoons almond butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey mustard
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Place a large, high-sided skillet over medium heat. Add in the 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and heat until the oil is warmed.
  2. Add in the bell peppers, carrots, onion, lima beans and corn. Cook until the vegetables just start to soften, and then add in the smoked paprika, crushed red pepper and kosher salt.
  3. Add in the cherry tomatoes, radishes and julienned zucchini. Let the vegetables cook for about 5 minutes longer so the added vegetables are just cooked through.
  4. Remove from the heat, and toss in the alfalfa sprouts.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the almond butter, honey mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Whisk in olive oil until you have reached the desired dressing texture.
  6. Drizzle the dressing over the succotash, and devour.

Candy funfetti dessert bowls recipe

Ingredients:

  • 6 small to medium latex balloons, inflated
  • 1 (12 ounce) package white candy melts
  • Candy sprinkles to decorate bowls

Directions:

Prepare the balloons and candy melts

  1. Blow up the balloons (not all the way) so the base of each is about the size of your palm with your fingers cupped around it. Tie to secure them.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the baking sheet on a flat work surface with the candy sprinkles and balloons nearby, along with an extra shallow bowl.
  3. In a deep, microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy in 20-second increments, stirring the mixture to help ensure the candy is completely melted.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.

Create a bowl shape with the candy melts

  1. One at a time, dip the base of each balloon into the melted mixture so the candy forms the shape of a small bowl around the bottom and slightly up the sides of the balloon.
  2. Allow the excess candy to drip back into the bowl.

Decorate the bowls

  1. Working over the shallow bowl, quickly shake the candy sprinkles over the melted candy before it begins to harden.
  2. Carefully set the dipped balloon vertically onto the baking sheet. It should be able to stand on its own.
  3. Continue until all the balloons are finished.

Allow the bowls to set, and then remove the balloons

  1. Place the baking sheet with the balloons in the refrigerator for about 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the balloons. One at a time, hold a balloon in the palm of your hand. Use a pair of scissors to gently cut into the top of the balloon so it slowly deflates.
  3. Carefully peel the balloon away from the candy bowl.
  4. Serve your favorite ice cream or berries in the bowls.

If you like your meal hot — as in spicy — then you'll love this recipe for grilled pork tenderloin with spicy harissa paste. Harissa is made from chilies and other herbs and spices, and is common in North African cuisine. It's easy to make and versatile enough to go from grilled meats to stews or even eggs.

Grilled pork tenderloin with spicy harissa paste

You'll probably have leftover paste with this recipe. Store it in a glass container in the refrigerator, and use it within a few weeks. You may want to add a bit of oil to the mix each time you use it. Then go wild, and add this fragrant, spicy paste to any number of dishes.

Grilled pork tenderloin with spicy harissa paste recipe

Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

  • 1 (1-1/2-pound) pork tenderloin
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 3 dried chili peppers, stems and seeds removed, rehydrated
  • 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
  • 1 teaspoon adobo sauce
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 4 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon toasted coriander seeds, ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon toasted caraway seeds, ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon toasted cumin seeds, ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus extra to season the pork
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, plus extra to season the pork

Directions:

  1. Season the pork with salt and ground black pepper on both sides, and rub it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Place it in a large, sealable baggie, and keep it refrigerated until you're ready to use it.
  2. In a saucepan, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, turn off the heat, and add the dried chili peppers to the pan so they are completely submerged. Let the peppers sit for about 20 minutes, and then drain them.
  3. Lightly oil the grates of the grill, and then preheat it to high.
  4. As the peppers rehydrate, in a skillet over medium heat, toast the coriander, caraway and cumin seeds for 2 to 3 minutes, tossing occasionally. After toasting, grind the seeds to a powder.
  5. Add the chili peppers, chipotle pepper, adobo sauce, garlic, lemon juice and zest, salt, pepper, mint, ground spices and olive oil to a food processor. Blend until smooth.
  6. Add the pork to the grill, and cook it on high heat for 5 minutes. Flip the pork, and brush the cooked side with the harissa paste. Cook on high heat for another 5 minutes.
  7. Reduce the heat to low. Flip the pork, brush with the harissa sauce, and cook for 5 minutes. Flip once more, and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until done.
  8. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that a safe internal temperature for pork is 145 degrees F, with a 3-minute rest, as measured by a meat thermometer.
  9. Slice the tenderloin, and serve it with a green salad and your favorite grain.

Turn up the heat with harissa.

Breed at a glance

  • Friendly
  • Alert
  • Intelligent
  • Quiet
  • Cat-like

Overview

Originating in Japan, the Akita was used as an adaptable hunting dog. Given to families with new babies, the Akita represents health, longevity and happiness. Famously brought the U.S. in the 1930s by Helen Keller and servicemen, the Akita is now used not only as a domestic companion and guard dog, but also in police and military work, fighting, hunting and pulling sleds. With a strong instinct to guard, it is not suited well for young children or other animals unless supervised.

Breed standards

  • AKC group: Working Group
  • UKC group: Northern Breed Group
  • Average lifespan: 10 - 13 years
  • Average size: 75 - 125 pounds
  • Coat appearance: Triple coat, coarse, short-haired, somewhat stiff and wool-like
  • Coloration: White, pinto, brindle with black mask
  • Hypoallergenic: No
  • Other identifiers: Round and full head, muzzle and cheeks; dark lips and eyes that look to be circled with eyeliner; black nose; broad chest; cat-like feet and fluffy; strong tail that curls over onto back
  • Possible alterations: Long coat, nude/pink or speckled nose

Is this breed right for you?

Because the Akita is known to be aggressive, it requires training during its puppy years. Needing a confident owner, the breed is not recommended for young children and other animals; however, it can adjust to family life if necessary but should always be supervised. Relatively inactive indoors, this breed does alright in an apartment if regularly exercised, although it would be much happier with its own yard to roam in. The Akita should not be allowed to think of itself as the pack leader as this may cause behavioral problems, including food obsessiveness. Shedding heavily twice a year, the Akita does need regular grooming.

breed characteristics

A dream day-in-the-life

The Akita loves its family, so regardless of what it is doing, it will be happiest if constantly surrounded by those it loves the most. The Akita also does best with routine and substance, so you will want to keep its walk and feeding schedule on point. Keep it in check with training commandments, and always show it that you care through verbal kudos and pat downs. Leave it outdoors and give the Akita the idea that it has the job to watch over the home.

Deer rescue

Deer rescue

It's a moment that mothers dream about. Their children are out playing on their own and choose to do the right thing when they're not around.

These young boys were playing out in the woods when they spied a fawn in distress. Instead of taunting her or leaving her there to suffer, the boys did what their mamas taught them and rescued the innocent baby deer.

Their reaction is priceless. A true moment for every mother, father and grown-up in the world to be proud of and one that these boys will probably remember for the rest of their lives.

Your vagina age-by-age: What you need to know

Sitting pretty in your 20s

When you're in your 20s, your hormones still pump at a tremendous rate, which should keep your vagina healthy and toned. "Estrogen and testosterone work to keep the tissues of the vagina plump and well-lubricated," reports Castillanos. Although young women can expect healthy vaginas, she cautions that they need to visit their gynecologist regularly for Pap smears to detect changes to the cervix, since cervical cancer is a risk for young women.

Childbearing in your 30s

Things start to change a little bit when women have children (which can obviously occur in their 20s, but we're sticking with the 30s for the sake of simplicity). Hormones go berserk with childbirth, and the pelvic floor is also stretched and traumatized by carrying a baby. "After childbirth and with the loss of estrogen, the muscles of the pelvic floor can become weak," says Castillanos. "This can significantly decrease the intensity of a woman's orgasm and contribute to urinary incontinence."

Castillanos stresses that after a woman gives birth, her primary focus needs to be on pelvic floor strengthening. "I recommend the Intensity device to automatically provide a gentle, rhythmic electrical stimulation to the pelvic floor and vagina for strengthening," she says.

Hormonal changes in your 40s

By the time women reach their 40s, they usually encounter hormonal changes due to perimenopause or menopause, either as a result of normal aging or surgeries like hysterectomies. Castillanos explains, "Hormones fluctuate and eventually decrease, which can seriously impact a woman's sex life. Many women end up having sex less often, but it has been shown that women who continue to have sexual activity once a week have less sexual dysfunction than those who don't."

According to Castillanos, sexual dysfunction can include vaginal dryness and decreased arousal. Women can address these problems by doing pelvic floor exercises and using a daily vaginal moisturizer and silicone-based lubricant during sex, as well as ditching the soap and cleansing with a product like Vagisil Moisturizing Wash.

Changing sexuality in your 50s

During a woman's 50s, hormone levels continue to drop, and contribute to increased vaginal dryness and even vaginal atrophy. The drop in estrogen and testosterone weakens the walls of the vagina and can even make the tissue feel thin and dry. Women in their 50s often complain that sex is painful as a result of the changes in the vaginal walls.

"Women need to stay well-hydrated," says Castillanos, "and stay on the lookout for any medications that contribute to dehydration, like allergy medicines." She adds that it's important to continue using a vaginal moisturizer and lubricant to avoid discomfort, and to ask for help from a doctor if sex becomes painful.

Embracing sexual health in your 60s

Ultimately, sexual health is tied to a woman's overall health, particularly as she ages. "Any difficulties that women have are dependent on their overall health and nutrition, their activity level and their hormone levels," Castillanos says. "Some women can maintain their sexual functioning relatively unchanged much longer than others."

Women in their later years need to stay on top of their hormone treatments to prevent and treat vaginal atrophy, dryness and pain. Pelvic floor exercises also remain extremely important for increased sexual sensation and urinary incontinence. Castillanos concludes that women in their 60s and beyond can look forward to a healthy sex life, as long as they take care of their vaginal and overall health.

Tip: Gynecologists really have seen and heard it all. Don't be embarrassed to speak up if you have questions about your vaginal health.

Ladyscaping by the numbers: How women style their pubic hair

$
0
0

Here's a tip, free of charge: It's hard to make friends while openly discussing pubic hair. I should know, since I recently polled several acquaintances about their grooming habits. Interpersonal discomfort aside, I tend to think the subject is fascinating because it can give us a peek at what society thinks about women, sexuality and the female body.

What's society saying these days?

The results are in, and it appears as though society is returning to a more natural ladyscaping aesthetic. We have collectively pushed back against Barbie doll expectations and the toll of easily-accessible pornography that glorifies a completely bare look. Indeed, all of the women I spoke with told me that they have abandoned the days of extreme waxing and shaving in order to embrace their grown-up womanhood.

"I keep the majority of my pubic hair for aesthetic reasons," says Abigail Ekue. "I used to go completely bald, but after a while it didn't look normal to me."

Businesswoman Sarah G. echoes the sentiment. "From the age of 15, I thought I had to shape my pubic hair," she says. "About five years ago, though, I stopped all that and went for a full bush. I love the look of my body this way — it's more balanced."

These snippets are borne out by the numbers, as well. A recent UK survey revealed that 51 percent of women don't groom their pubic hair at all, and 62 percent state that their partners prefer the natural look, anyway. Of those 49 percent of women who groom, 33 percent shave their own pubic hair, 27 percent rely on the expertise of a waxing professional and 15 percent use hair removal creams.

This is a far cry from what I was thinking in my early 20s. I was pretty certain that I was the only woman who didn't go to the salon every week for a Brazilian.

A look back at yesteryear

It wasn't always this way, though. The decade that ended in 2011 saw Americans spend $2.1 billion on hair removal in the form of waxing, shaving, tweezing and beyond. Women went for the triangle, upside-down triangle, landing strip and completely bare. Women almost never went for the full bush.

For good or bad, waxing salons have seen a decrease in revenue in the last few years. So what changed? It's hard to say, but it doesn't hurt that celebrities have hopped back onto the bushy wagon. Gwyneth Paltrow recently stated that she "works a 70s vibe," and photographers snapped Lady Gaga with a full bush not too long ago.

So, ladies, the surveys and the celebrities have spoken: It's OK to go natural.

Top 10 most expensive corporate acquisitions

10. Sanofi acquires Aventis for $73.5 billion

What does a French pharmaceutical company do when it wants to increase its grip on the international pharmaceutical market? Well, if that company is Sanofi (then Sanofi-Synthélabo), it stages a hostile takeover of its competitor, Aventis. Unfortunately for Sanofi, Aventis fought back by diluting shares to skirt the bid. Ultimately, the French government got involved, bringing both sides to the agreement that Sanofi and Aventis would merge — at the cost of $73.5 billion — to form Sanofi-Aventis.

9. Comcast acquires AT&T Broadband for $76.1 billion

Back in 2001, AT&T Broadband was AT&T's cable television arm — which, naturally, put them in competition with Comcast. So, when Comcast decided to acquire AT&T Broadband that year, both sides considered it beneficial. AT&T because it wasn't planning to grow its cable television division anyway, and Comcast because it made it the biggest cable provider in the country.

8. Royal Dutch Shell acquires Shell Transport and Trading for $80.1 billion

No, it's not a coincidence that these companies both have "Shell" in their names. Yes, they basically were owned by the same people, as they were the by-products of a 1907 merger between Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and Shell Transport and Trading. At that time, though, bad blood among the nations wasn't conducive to a merger. Fast forward to 2004 when the time did prove conducive, and Royal Dutch Shell scooped up Shell Transport and Trading for a cool $80.1 billion so that the branches could finally merge their business dealings under one company.

7. Exxon acquires Mobil for $80.3 billion

Think back to the early '90s, if you will. Once you get past the vision of your younger self in acid wash jeans, you may well remember that Exxon and Mobil were two of the largest oil companies around. In 1998, though, Exxon acquired Mobil for $80.3 billion, thereby becoming one of the largest — the third largest, to be exact — and most-recognized oil companies in the world.

6. SBC acquires AT&T for $83.1 billion

After courts ruled in 1984 that AT&T needed to form several smaller subsidiaries in accordance with antitrust laws, the telephone company did just that. SBC Communications was one of those subsidiaries that, in 2005, actually purchased the former parent company. After plunking down the $83.1 billion to secure the bid, SBC took on AT&T's name and began doing business as the new AT&T.

5. Pfizer acquires Warner-Lambert for $87.3 billion

Much like the Sanofi-Aventis merger, Pfizer acquiring Warner-Lambert had a lot to do with quelling the competition — pharmaceutical companies apparently aren't too keen on competition. So in 2000, major pharmaceutical player Pfizer bought Warner-Lambert for $87.3 billion and put an end to the centuries-old competition once and for all.

4. Fortis, Banco Santander, Royal Bank of Scotland Group acquire ABN AMRO for $100 billion

This merger cost Fortis, a financial service provider, a lot — actually, it pretty much cost Fortis everything. With the help of Banco Santander and the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, Fortis acquired the Dutch bank of ABN AMRO in 2007. Unfortunately for Fortis, 2008 came and with it came the global financial crisis. This created a major financial crisis for Fortis, and it couldn't afford to finance the acquisition anymore. Accordingly, it had to sell off assets and re-brand to do damage control, but, alas, it did little to fix the damage that had already been done.

3. Altria Group "spins off" Philip Morris International for $107 billion

This is kind of another case of the right hand paying the left. Back in the early 2000s, the corporation now known as Altria Group was known as Philip Morris Companies, Inc. However, perhaps hoping to separate its name from its multiple tobacco holdings, the company re-branded to its current incarnation. Then, several years later, it sold off its international presence for $107 billion, while the parent company remained in the tobacco business.

2. Vodafone AirTouch acquires Mannesmann for $185.1 billion

They can't all be happy mergers, and telecommunications company Vodafone AirTouch acquiring competitor Mannesmann certainly started off on the wrong foot. The trouble can seemingly be traced back to the mid '90s, when Mannesmann began encroaching on Vodafone's "territory" in the UK. Vodafone decided that, in turn, it would stage a coup — the company launched a controversial hostile takeover. However, all's well that ends well, we suppose. Mannesmann agreed in 2000 to the terms of Vodafone's merger, and it was absorbed into the company.

1. America Online acquires Time Warner for $186.2 billion

Talk about an unsound investment! Back in 2000 when America Online purchased Time Warner for an obscene $186.2 billion, it clearly must have had high hopes for the merger. At the time, AOL was the reigning master of the internet, while Time Warner was a top dog in the cable TV market. Conceivably, you put the two together and you get a media powerhouse, right? Apparently not. The merger didn't really do either company good, and they parted ways less than a decade later.
