Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo have tied the knot

There was a point where we didn't think that the Maroon 5 frontman would ever be tamed, but we were proved wrong last year, when Levine decided that he could not live without his Victoria's Secret model girlfriend.

Adam Levine to marry Behati Prinsloo this Saturday >>

The "One More Night" hitmaker got down on one knee and popped the question to his South African–born love in July 2013, and now the loved-up pair are officially Mr. and Mrs. Levine.

The couple married in a beautiful ceremony in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on Saturday. According to E! News, Prinsloo wore a Marchesa gown and Levine wore a fitted tux. The bride and groom asked for their guests to make a donation to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles instead of bringing wedding gifts.

The wedding festivities began on Friday night, with some famous names in attendance, including Robert Downey, Jr., Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, models Coco Rocha and Erin Heatherton, and Levine's Maroon 5 bandmates.

It's no secret that Levine has been a bit of a playboy in the past, and he's gotten a pretty bad rep when it comes to the way that he has treated his ex-girlfriends — which include Anne Vyalitsyna, Jane Herman and Nina Agdal — with reports even suggesting that the crooner informed his most recent ex, Agdal, about his engagement to Prinsloo via text. Ouch.

Adam Levine makes amends with exes before wedding >>

While the crooner may have left a trail of broken hearts in his path, he's changed his ways, and it's evident that Prinsloo has made him a better person.

Levine's love is obvious, and he has used the interviews in the lead-up to his nuptials to gush about his fiancée.

"I remember talking to you one time, you telling me you were never going to get married, and now you're engaged," Jay Leno said during Levine's appearance on the Tonight Show back in October 2013.

Adam Levine & Behati Prinsloo will marry this summer >>

"Famous last words: 'I'll never get married,'" Levine joked. "You know, I still don't think you have to get married, unless you meet someone that makes you want to marry them. And then you marry them and it's wonderful."

We're so glad that Prinsloo made Levine want to marry her. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Fire up the grill for this lovely dinner salad. You read that right: This recipe for grilled romaine and sweet potato salad with creamy cilantro dressing calls for you to toss your greens onto the grill along with a few other ingredients.

Grilled Romaine and sweet potato salad with creamy cilantro dressing

Grilling the romaine will add a bit of smokiness to this warm salad. While you're at it, the grill is a great spot to turn bread into crunchy croutons. And let's not forget the sweet potatoes. Imagine the flavors that come through from grilling them for a short time — sweet and smoky goodness. Top it all with a creamy cilantro dressing for a fab salad that is as unique as it is delicious.

Grilled Romaine and sweet potato salad with creamy cilantro dressing

Grilled romaine and sweet potato salad with creamy cilantro dressing recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

For the dressing

  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 garlic clove, minced and mashed into a paste
  • 2-3 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

For the salad

  • 2 heads romaine lettuce, split down the center, washed and dried
  • 2 sweet potatoes
  • 4 slices rustic bread
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons olive oil

Directions:

For the dressing

  1. Into a bowl, add all the ingredients, and whisk to combine. Taste, and adjust the seasonings as needed.
  2. Refrigerate until ready to use. Whisk before using.

For the salad

  1. In a small bowl, place the olive oil. Preheat your grill to medium-low.
  2. Wash and dry the sweet potatoes (skins on), and then pierce them all around with a fork. Place them into a shallow baking dish, and microwave them for 4 to 5 minutes. Rotate the potatoes, and microwave for another 4 to 5 minutes.
  3. When the potatoes have cooled to the touch, cut them into wedges. Lightly brush all sides of the wedges with the olive oil.
  4. Lightly brush the romaine (both sides) with the olive oil, and then the slices of bread.
  5. When the grill is hot, add the potatoes. Grill them on all sides, for a total of about 5 minutes.
  6. As the potatoes are cooking, add the slices of bread to the corner of the grill. Turn once, taking care not to burn them. You want them just lightly grilled.
  7. Remove the potatoes and bread from the grill, and add the romaine. Grill on both sides, flipping once, for a total of about 4 minutes. You want the lettuce to be lightly charred and slightly wilted. Remove from the heat.
  8. Cut the potato wedges into cubes, and then do the same for the slices of bread to use them as croutons.
  9. Place 1 romaine half onto each plate. Evenly divide the sweet potatoes and croutons among them. Drizzle the dressing over each, and serve warm.
  10. If you prefer, chop the romaine after grilling it, and add it to a bowl along with the sweet potato cubes. Gently toss, divide among plates, top with the croutons, and drizzle the dressing over the tops.

Toss your salad on the grill.

These puff pastry tarts make great appetizers. Not only are they very impressive to look at, but they are also loaded with flavor. The cream of Parmesan goes so well with the toasted pancetta and the asparagus that the three ingredients together create a perfect bite.

Tarts with asparagus, pancetta and cream of Parmesan recipe

I usually go for very simple preparations of food. I would say that this is simple, just a little elaborate in preparing the ingredients. Sometimes a little effort and patience pay off, because really, I would bet that everyone will love these.

Mini puff pastry tarts with asparagus, pancetta and cream of Parmesan recipe

Yields 7

Ingredients:

  • 12 asparagus spears
  • 4 ounces pancetta, diced
  • 1 ounce butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Nutmeg, grated
  • Salt
  • 1 store-bought puff pastry
  • 4 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Shaving Parmesan cheese
  • 7 fresh mint leaves or other herbs for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a small pot over high heat, bring salted water to a boil.
  2. While waiting for the water to boil, prepare a bowl of water with a lot of ice for the ice bath to blanch the asparagus.
  3. When the water is boiling, cook the asparagus for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the thickness.
  4. Remove the asparagus from the boiling water, and place them in the ice bath. When completely cool, chop them, and then set them aside.
  5. In a small, dry saucepan over medium heat, toast the pancetta. Transfer it to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Set aside.
  6. To prepare the cream of Parmesan, in a small saucepan over low-medium heat, melt the butter.
  7. Add the flour, and mix until you make a roux.
  8. Add the milk gradually, mixing continuously. Sprinkle in the nutmeg and salt.
  9. When the mixture has attained a creamy consistency, add the Parmesan. Mix for 1 minute, and then turn off the heat. Set aside.
  10. Using a food shaper or the mouth of a drinking glass, cut the puff pastry into 7 (or more) circular shapes.
  11. Place the round puff pastries onto a baking pan lined with parchment paper.
  12. Spoon some cream of Parmesan into the middles of the round puff pastries. Add some asparagus and pancetta on top. Leave the sides of the puff pastries empty.
  13. In a small bowl, lightly whisk the egg yolk to serve as the egg wash. Brush the egg wash all around the edges of the puff pastries.
  14. Bake the tarts in the oven, preheated to 350 degrees F, on the middle rack for 15 minutes.
  15. When the tarts are ready to be served, drizzle them with extra-virgin olive oil, and then garnish with the Parmesan shavings and the fresh mint, if using.

We really love to eat pie. It's become tradition for summer parties all season long. However, sometimes making a homemade crust is time consuming and, well, almost distracting from the great flavor of the filling inside.

These recipes are packed with delicious pie fillings and are so good you'll want to make them over and over again this summer.

1. Cherry cheesecake pie ice cream recipe

 Cherry cheesecake pie ice cream

This ice cream is bursting with cherry pie flavor and a hint of cheesecake thanks to the cream cheese addition. With cherry pie filling, actual bites of cherry are scattered throughout this ice cream. Plus, it's a great way to stay cool on a hot summer day.

Yields 3 quarts

Ingredients:

  • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 (14 ounce) cans sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 cups heavy whipping cream, not whipped
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 2 (21 ounce) cans cherry pie filling
  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Slowly add in the lemon juice and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat the half-and-half to 175 degrees F. Remove 1/2 cup of the half-and-half, and add it to the eggs. Then add the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the half-and-half. Cook over low heat until it reaches 160 degrees F.
  3. Remove from the heat, and allow the mixture to cool slightly. Add in the sweetened condensed milk, the whipping cream and the cream cheese mixture.
  4. Stir in the pie filling and graham cracker crumbs.
  5. Spoon the mixture into an ice cream machine, and follow manufacturer's instructions to make the ice cream.

2. Lemon pie bar milkshake recipe

Lemon pie bar milkshake

There is a little ice cream shop close to where my family lives that blends up actual pie and cheesecake pieces into a milkshake. It's become one of my family's favorite treats.

For this milkshake, you first make the lemon pie bars and then blend them into the milkshake. Two amazing treats, and both whip up pretty quick.

Yields 1 (9 x 13-inch) pan of lemon pie bars and 1 milkshake

Ingredients:

  • 1 box lemon cake mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, separated
  • 1 (22 ounce) can lemon pie filling
  • 3 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup whole milk

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9 x 13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray, and set it aside.
  2. Stir together the lemon cake mix, eggs, butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until completely combined.
  3. Spread a little more than 1/2 of the cake batter onto the bottom of the pan. (The batter has to just cover the pan.)
  4. Spoon the entire can of lemon pie filling evenly over the cake batter.
  5. Using a cookie scoop or spoon, dollop small amounts of the remaining batter evenly on top of the pie filling.
  6. Bake for 32 to 35 minutes or until golden brown on top or until a fork inserted into the top of the cake mix (not the center filling) comes out clean.
  7. Allow to cool completely, and then cut the bars into large squares.
  8. Blend 1 large square with the remaining teaspoon of vanilla extract, the ice cream and the milk.
  9. Enjoy immediately.

3. Blueberry pie smoothie recipe

Blueberry pie smoothie

This blueberry smoothie is creamy and filling. It makes a great breakfast drink or afternoon snack. The trick to a creamy smoothie is to first freeze a banana (peel removed) and then blend it with the other ingredients. You'll be amazed at how smooth this drink is.

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 large banana, frozen
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon Truvia, or substitute with another sweetener
  • 1/2 cup blueberry pie filling
  • Cookie crumbs to stir in and to garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Before making the smoothie, remove the peel of the banana, and chop the banana into large coins. Freeze.
  2. When the banana is frozen, combine all the ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth.
  3. If desired, add cookie crumbs.
  4. Divide into 2 cups, and enjoy immediately.

4. Strawberry pie-filled ice pops recipe

Strawberry pie filled popsicles

These ice pops are so easy to make and taste just like strawberry pie. The golden Oreos that are mixed in take the place of the "crust" in this amazing pie filling dessert.

Serves 8

Ingredients:

  • 8 golden Oreos
  • 1 cup strawberries, stems removed
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 package cheesecake-flavored pudding, dry
  • 2 cups coconut milk

Directions:

  1. Blend the cookies until fine crumbs, and set them aside.
  2. Clean out the blender, and add in the strawberries, sugar and water. Blend until smooth.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the pudding mix and the coconut milk. Beat until smooth.
  4. Combine all the ingredients together, and pour the mixture into ice pop molds.
  5. Allow to freeze overnight.
  6. When ready to enjoy an ice pop, run the mold under warm water for 10 to 15 seconds, and then remove.

5. Lemon cake and pie filling parfait recipe

Lemon cake and pie filling parfait

I love miniature foods, especially desserts. I always feel like they are more fun to eat. I made this trifle in miniature trifle dishes, but if you don't have any, you can still make this treat. Just use one large trifle dish or even a large bowl.

This trifle is bursting with lemon flavor. Don't forget the vanilla ice cream and cherry on top.

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:

  • 1 box lemon cake mix plus the ingredients called for
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 (22 ounce) cans lemon pie filling
  • 1 container cream cheese frosting
  • Vanilla ice cream, cherries, lemon candies (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9 x 13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray, and set it aside.
  2. Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions, adding in the vanilla extract, and bake according to the instructions for a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  3. Remove the cake from the oven, and allow it to cool completely.
  4. Break the cake into large chunks with your hands.
  5. Place the cream cheese frosting into a frosting bag with a #4 tip attached.
  6. Layer 6 to 8 miniature trifle dishes (or 1 large dish) with the cake chunks. Top with lemon pie filling, and then drizzle the frosting over the filling.
  7. Repeat layers until the trifle dishes are filled and all the ingredients have been used.
  8. If desired, top the trifles with vanilla ice cream, a cherry and/or a sugared lemon candy.

Bear Grylls and Zac Efron shirtless? This year, Christmas comes July 28

Ladies, let's be honest. It's really hard to not develop a crush on a guy who could save your a** when the chips are down. What woman doesn't want a guy whose thigh muscles are strong enough to scale a 40' palm tree to fetch us a coconut when we're starving on a deserted island? Grylls speaks to a primal need in all of us that knows if we end up on the side of a glacier (pronounced glay-cee-ah by Grylls), we aren't going to die. Calm down, feminists; we could learn how to do that survival stuff if we wanted to. But if a hot guy wants to do it for us, then who are we to stand in his way? Mama didn't raise no dummies.

New couple alert? Zac Efron and Michelle Rodriguez seen kissing >>

Sure, Grylls has that pesky wife and those cute little kids. And yes, he likes to drink his urine a little more than he should, and we could do without the crunching noise when he eats super disgusting bugs. It's also true that we may or may not be scarred for life after we watched him swing that lizard into a tree stump so he could eat it for dinner. In his defense, it was in Sumatra, Indonesia, and a gal's gotta eat in Sumatra as much as she does in Los Angeles, OK? Just once in our lives, aren't we all dying to say, "Hey, honey, would you step into that bacteria-infested water and wrestle me up a lizard with your bare hands for dinner?" (Warning: This video may be gruesome for some viewers — OK, for most.)

It's true that a lot of Grylls' survival techniques make us say, "Can I just die instead?" But the facts remain that his ability to survive is hot and he looks amazing with his shirt off. Let's give credit where credit is due. Now Grylls has granted us a gift we dared not dream of. He has joined up with another shirtless hottie, Zac Efron, for his season premiere of Running Wild with Bear Grylls. While we're a little hurt we weren't invited to run wild with Bear Grylls, we will forgive him since he's bringing us Christmas early this year — July 28, to be exact.

Zac Efron explains that hobo fight and how AA saved his life >>

In the following teaser from the premiere, Grylls has us at "We'll just take our tops off." Cue the bow-chicka-wow-wow music. Ladies, whatever you have planned for July 28 — your best friend's wedding, a career-defining dinner meeting with your company's CEO, Grandma's 95th birthday — cancel it. When you explain why you had to break your plans, everyone will understand.

James Garner passes: 5 Times he made us want to grow old with him in The Notebook

Opening scene

In the opening scene of The Notebook, we are introduced to an aging and humbled Noah, who memorably says, "I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me, and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect, I've succeeded as gloriously as anyone who's ever lived. I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and for me, that's always been enough."

The Notebook James Garner opening scene

The Notebook James Garner opening scene

Perfect man: Ryan Gosling is pregnant Eva Mendes' chef >>

Love story

Every day, aging Noah reads their love story to Allie — a story she handwrote — in hopes it will trigger her memory. Growing old with someone like this sure beats growing old alone, or with someone who calls you "old bat" and sits in the corner rolling their eyes at everything you say.

How did Eva Mendes hide a pregnancy for so long? >>

Lost but not forgotten

Couldn't we all use a little tireless patience in our golden years? Garner's elderly Noah introduces Allie's children to her — as just his children, so as not to upset her. We gather from the story he has likely done this dozens of times, and in so doing, found a remote way for her adult children and grandchildren to stay connected to her, even though she has no idea who they are. Allie excuses herself from the gathering of strangers and when Noah's children beg him to come home, he tells them, "That's my sweetheart in there. I'm not leaving her." This is one of several incredibly sad but hopelessly inspiring moments Garner delivers so expertly.

Celebrity deaths of 2014 >>

Dinner for two

Garner's Noah arranges for a special candlelit dinner after he has been reading to Allie all day. The intimate setting triggers Allie's memory, which they both know will only last five minutes. In that five minutes they dance, until Allie's memory fails and she panics to be dancing in her room with someone she doesn't know. The scene ends with old Noah in tears as the doctor has to sedate Allie to calm her down. Sigh.

Final scene

When elderly Noah goes in search of elderly Allie in the middle of the night, he finds her in a rare lucid moment where she remembers everything. When Allie asks Noah if their love is strong enough to take them away together, he replies, "I think our love can do anything we want it to." Then he climbs in bed with her and they drift off together. Gulp. Gulp. Gulp. Jaded hearts scoff and say such sentiment doesn't exist in real life, but if anyone could make us believe, it was Garner. He took what could have been a potentially cheesy or sappy scene and made it believable. This movie is just one of a multitude of reasons Garner's presence on the big and small screens will be missed.

Finances are always a touchy subject, and you can expect the subject to get touchier when Mars enters Scorpio on July 25. Scorpio is the zodiac sign of other people’s money. This can refer to money you owe or money that is owed to you. Mars is your ruling planet, so the implication is that a certain somebody hasn’t been keeping up with his part of the bargain. This would be a good time to sit down and work out a payback plan before he winds up costing you more. Paying in installments would be a good idea.

You’re entering a time when loved ones and friends will be extremely demanding, remarkably insensitive and a bit vindictive. It’s hard to believe that the people in your life could become so self-absorbed, but that’s what will be happening over the next seven weeks. It will be up to you to practice self-restraint, patience and fortitude. You will also have to take the high road at certain times. It’s true that you’re not the self-sacrificing type, but your grace under pressure will be deeply appreciated and greatly rewarded when everyone returns to their senses in September.

The only person who can help you is someone you swore you’d never speak to again. The universe has a funny way of bringing us back into the lives of people that we have unfinished business with. If yes, then keep on doing what you’re doing because you’re on the right path. If the answer is no, then it’s not too late to backtrack and discover where you took a wrong turn. Since you know you can’t win anyway, you might as well let loved ones know where you stand. However, you will need to be sensitive to people when they say that you’re coming on too strong at times because Mars' energy can be combative.

Uranus retrograde on July 21 brings a downshift in gears. It’s aggravating, considering the time spent getting your information in order for a review, application or interview. Does this mean the whole thing’s off? Let’s say it’s not a burning priority for the other side like it once was. That’s good news if you were on the wrong end of an inquiry, investigation or lawsuit because the whole thing may blow over. And if this was something you pinned your hopes on, start looking for another door to knock on because this one won’t be opening anytime soon.

You could meet the love of your life this week. It may sound impossibly farfetched but a rare sun/Jupiter conjunction in Leo on July 24 in that part of your solar chart that pertains to romance says that this is the time. And if you're not meeting someone new, then you could be getting back together with someone you used to date or you'll be contacted by someone you haven't seen in years. In any case you'll want to be out and about because this is your red-letter day. Don't let this opportunity pass you by.

No sooner do you decide to commit to that guy you've been seeing than you learn that someone else you were always interested in is genuinely interested in you. These dilemmas happen all the time when Venus trines Neptune (July 24). Begin by asking yourself if your feelings are the same for both men. Chances are they aren't. But if they are, then be upfront about needing time to date each of them so that you can make up your mind. The one who doesn't get angry and storm out of the room is the one for you.

Are you taking a chance on love? Yes. But the nice part is, so is he. There's something to be said for getting together with someone who stands as much to lose as you do. You've both been used, betrayed and hurt. And you both have come dangerously close to adopting a hardened "what's in it for me" outlook. This is what comes from being seasoned veterans in the Hunger Games of Love. You can recognize a comrade in the eyes of a potential enemy. This will become abundantly clear when the sun conjoins Jupiter on July 24.

Oftentimes people are telling the truth when they say that falling in love with them would be a bad idea. You won't believe him because you are certain that you're in his life for a reason. The Venus/Pluto opposition on July 27 is so charged and intense that the attraction feels otherworldly and karmic. But pay attention when he says that he's messed up, damaged goods or just plain bad news because he is. You can pursue this or you can adopt the point of view that what happens in a past life stays in a past life.

Don't be surprised if you get asked "where have you been all my life?" on July 24. It sounds like a cheesy line, but the fellow asking it is completely serious. Nor is he alone. You could get asked the same question several times. The sun conjunct Jupiter in Leo makes you positively resplendent. This unique combination of planetary energies will transform you into something that people can't live without; the answer to their prayers. It's incredibly flattering, but people will also want to possess you so make sure that you're not attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Up next: Virgo horoscope >>

virgo

You may have sworn off love, but love hasn't sworn off you. Virgos often go through fallow periods when they take themselves off the market. Maybe it's to mend a broken heart, to cleanse out the emotional toxins from a recent relationship or to get your head together. Celibacy (physical or metaphysical) is to be expected when you're born under the sign of the virgin. However, it looks like the stars have other plans in store for you this summer. Moreover, they involve someone you used to date or whom you swore you'd never speak to again.

Up next: Libra horoscope >>

Negotiating the emotional terrain gets tricky on July 27 when Venus opposes Pluto. That's because Venus brings out Pluto's more obsessive and possessive qualities when she's traveling through this part of the sky. These can range from your lover irrationally accusing you of flirting with other guys to your spouse using finances to clip your wings and manipulate you. Your first reaction will be to appease, but don't. You aren't doing him any favors by going along with this. You don't want to enable a situation that would only get worse. Nip it in the bud pronto.

Mars enters Scorpio on July 25. This will be an enormous relief after feeling like you couldn't do anything right by your love life for the past seven months. You tried doing things the other person's way but it was clear a while back that it wasn't working for you. Mars in Scorpio gives you the confidence to be who you are and if that's fine by your partner, great! If not? Then it's goodbye. Don't be surprised if you taking charge and owning your feelings and desires is what this person wanted all along.

You are not safe to be around this week. The sun conjunct Jupiter in Leo will bring out your no-holds-barred, passionate and reckless side. You will be game for just about anything and your love of adventure will override others' sense of caution and propriety. Your enthusiasm is infectious. This is great if you're dealing with someone who's just as fun loving as you are because if there was ever a time to get lost in each other and do the things you never let yourself do (but always wanted to), this is the time to do it.

Listen to yourself this week and count all the times you point out the negative in the positive. Maybe it's a deflating remark when a loved one gushes on about something, a word of warning when a friend gets excited about her prospects, or it's poking holes in your spouse's latest dream project. You think you're being the voice of reason, but what's reasonable about taking the air out of somebody's tires? Obviously you don't wish anyone ill. If anything, you want the best. However, it's time to re-examine this knee-jerk reaction. You're coming across as a downer.

The sun conjunct Jupiter on July 24 shows you attracting strong male personalities into your life. This will be interesting because you see yourself as having strong opinions but not as someone who has a strong personality. "Ego" is practically considered a swear word with you. The beauty of finding yourself in a relationship with someone who has an unapologetically overinflated feeling of self-importance is that it forces you to assert who you are so that you don't get overshadowed or pushed around. It also gets you to think in first person rather than in third person terms.

You can expect the man in your life to open up and share all kinds of fantasies when Venus forms a trine to Neptune on July 24. But these won't be deep dark fantasies involving whips, chains and stiletto heels. That's Venus in Scorpio. Venus in Cancer is all about creating a life together. Expect lots of talk about houses, kids and whether or not there will be one bathroom sink or two. If this is what you're looking for, then by all means be encouraging. If not? Well, it might be time to break out the leather chaps.

These light, stylish bags still accommodate your necessities while giving you extra mobility — and a leg up on the office fashion game. Give your shoulders a break with these eight daytime-appropriate clutches.

1. Medina clutch

Medina clutch

This versatile brown leather clutch features a simple design of Moroccan-inspired geometric stitching and is large enough to house your tablet or any other essentials you tote to the office each day. Think how divine this would look with your dark denim skinny jeans on Casual Friday — or your polish cream shift dress any other day of the week. (Madewell, $130)

2. Colorblock envelope clutch

Colorblock envelope clutch

I've said it many times and it still rings true: colorblocking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to make you appear 150 percent more put-together. This colorblocked envelope clutch is no exception, with its sharp, modern look and metal bar detailing. Although it comes in black and white, I'd recommend the tan/red colorway for a splash of brightness. (Nordstrom, $48)

3. Canvas belted clutch

Canvas belted clutch

A simple canvas clutch is elevated to new heights with a classy tan-and-gold belt strap. The shape is defined yet has plenty of forgiving room for when you inevitably cram too many business or life supplies in there. Old habits die hard, but this bag will help. (Ann Taylor, $88)

4. Convertible fold-over clutch

Convertible fold-over clutch

Prefer a no-nonsense purse style? Enjoy flexibility? The fold-over convertible clutch from Express is for you. Choose between red and cream, both highly versatile colors, and then decide whether to go full-on clutch or add the straps for a crossbody affect. The choice is yours. (Express, $40)

5. Metallic clutch

Metallic clutch

Okay, so this is a bold choice and at first glance you may assume that a silver metallic clutch is better suited for a night out than a morning full of meetings. But think again. There is no reason why you can't rock something edgier at work, especially in purse form. The roomy size means you can stash plenty of gadgets, while the ornate black edges offer contrast to the bag's mirror shine. (Bloomingdales, $280)

6. Star-studded clutch

Star-studded clutch

The Ela Large Milck Clutch from Club Monaco has an asymmetrical silhouette and features a star-studded flap in a neutral shade for a quietly edgy statement. Best part? You can pretty much wear it with anything and add some instant spice to all those skirt-and-blazer combinations you're so sick of sporting. (Macy's, $498)

7. Arabella clutch

Arabella clutch

BCBGeneration's Arabella High-Maintenance Clutch comes in vibrant emerald, making it easy for you to add a pop of color to your workday neutrals. The shape is sophisticated, with a slightly vintage quality. Pair this with that pleated midi skirt that's been sitting in your closet since April, and a tailored blouse. (DSW, $50)

8. Floral clutch

Floral clutch

A patterned bag, like this oversized floral clutch, is a dream come true for those who like to mix prints without over-thinking the outfit. The old-school floral print on this roomy clutch from French Connection injects just the right amount of insouciant femininity. (Zappos, $68)

Jason Biggs keeps on apologizing for Malaysia Airlines tweet

On Monday's episode of The View, the guest host said, "There was one line, an old adage, 'Never attribute to malice that which is explained by stupidity.' I certainly meant no harm; there was no malice, but I was stupid. It was poorly timed. I've always tried to find the humor in situations… it's a knee-jerk reaction for me, it's how I cope."

Jason Biggs jokes about Malaysia Airlines in wake of latest crash >>

The public relations debacle began last Thursday when the star tweeted out, "Anyone wanna buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles" just after the airliner was shot down over the Ukraine.

The reactions on the social media site were immediate, with his followers calling Biggs out on his insensitivity to the 298 people on board who were killed. Instead of apologizing for his initial tweet, the American Pie star shot back with, "Hey all you 'too soon' a**holes - it's a f***ing joke."

Although he eventually corrected his mistake by apologizing to his fans and the families of the victims, the damage was done. He explained to Jenny McCarthy on the daytime talk show that he didn't realize "the extent and magnitude of what had happened."

He summed up to the ladies on the show, "I have nothing but sympathy for the victims and their families. I've learned my lesson and would like to move on."

Let's hope Biggs thinks before he types next time.

Verizon offers rewards in exchange for customers' personal data

$

Now, Verizon is trying to entice its more than 100 million subscribers to give unfettered access to their personal data in return for gift cards, coupons and more through its rewards program, Verizon Smart Rewards, which launches nationwide on July 24. But before opting into the program, it's important to find out exactly what you're giving up in return.

By opting into the Verizon rewards program, customers agree to allow Verizon to access, and share across its businesses, all the data on your mobile device including:

  • Websites you visit
  • Search terms you've used
  • Location of your device (your location)
  • Apps and device feature usage
  • Demographic, interests and behavior usage (including ad responses, shopping behaviors, etc.)
  • Anything related to your Verizon account including billing history and device usage

With this level of detailed information, it's not hard to imagine your mobile phone company knowing more about you than just about anyone. Are you ready for that level of intimacy with a communications service provider? And while Verizon assures customers the information is kept anonymous and not shared with any company outside of Verizon, it doesn't say anything about businesses paying Verizon to access your device with advertising.

Mobile marketers have been trying for years to push advertising to your smartphone that's relevant to exactly where you are. It's the location-based data generated by the GPS on your mobile device that's super juicy for marketing types.

Been searching for deals on a late summer beach vacation? Your mobile phone provider wants to be able to capture that information and charge the swim boutique you pass every day on the way to the office to send you a coupon the next time you walk by the shop. For the mobile marketer your smartphone data is the Holy Grail of selling you more stuff. Now Verizon wants its customers to get on board.

Companies like Verizon stand to make a fortune accessing your personal data to sell you more stuff. In fact, according to Gartner Research, advertisers are projected to spend $18 billion in 2014 on mobile marketing and should reach a staggering $41.9 billion by 2017.

Verizon is also approaching its FiOS broadband customers with an offer of increased upload speeds in exchange for participating in its rewards program.

Do you think rewards points and coupons are enough to get you to let Verizon access your mobile device data? Let us know what you think.

Income inequality between the sexes needs to be resolved

$
0
0

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women still earn approximately 77 cents for every dollar a man makes, although they outnumber men when it comes to finishing college and holding advanced degrees. With an increased number of single-parent homes and female-led households, that is problematic. Many women are the primary source of income in their families. Given the job crisis, they may be the only source of income, and that wage discrepancy not only damages their family but also has a negative effect on the economy.

It is mind boggling to me that, for all the progress we have made, we are still so far behind. I often complain about issues of inequality between the sexes. To be fair, I even sometimes blame women for holding us back. Every time women "play dumb" or use their sexuality to get what they want, they are contributing to the problem. However, money can be a funny thing. In my experience, men love a woman who makes a lot of money... just so long as she doesn't make a lot more than he does. Perhaps this need to keep our baseline wage lower is an attempt at maintaining that control? I'm not suggesting they are cavemen, but I do think it taps into their inherent need to feel like a provider. I know this seems very foreign to some, but don't forget that it really was not all that long ago that women were greeting their husbands at the door with martinis at the end of a long day's work. Many of these men were raised by parents and/or grandparents of that generation and have been influenced by that mentality whether or not it is apparent.

The role women play is that we are less comfortable expecting and demanding what is rightfully ours. This will be an issue for as long as we allow it to continue. I knew about the vote because it is on my radar, but it was barely touched upon in the news. We should all be outraged and on the phone with our local representatives (particularly during times when we know they are up for re-election). Write to your Senators and members of Congress and let them know that we noticed. You will be amazed at how quickly they recognize you as the (voting) head of your household.

The Ryan Gosling manicure straight from heaven

Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, nail art, Ryan Gosling. These are a few of my favorite things and now I can have it all.

That's right, ladies, INNI custom nail wraps' new flavor of the week is none other than Ryan Gosling.

Offered in an array of images (yes, some shirtless), you get to choose your favorite looks and then INNI will create custom nail wraps just for you.

Let's think through this strategically: Ryan topless definitely would go great on your thumbnail, because his pecs deserve a constant thumbs up; let's go Ry in glasses on your pointer fingernail, since that's the hardworking digit; maybe a deep v-neck Gosling on the middle finger so you both can party; and maybe let's save the tux one for your ring fingernail? Can't hurt. Am I overthinking this? Absolutely. But we are discussing Ryan Gosling nail art so I am pretty sure there are no rules here.

Best part is that INNI nail wraps are like gel polish, as in they won't chip and they will last up to 14 days. So now you can confidently rock Gosling nails for two weeks straight and never look back

Thank you, INNI, for putting the man in manicure.

7 Reasons to explore creative writing with your student

$
0
0

Any season is the perfect season to explore creative writing, and it is a pastime that you and your child can enjoy together. Here are seven reasons to introduce your student (of any age) to creative writing.

1. Creative writing is creative

After all, "creative" does appear in the title of the genre. Creativity, though sometimes less evident in the conventional classroom, contributes to skills like critical thinking and problem solving, which are imperative to your child's successful academic growth. Teach your student to consider information from all angles: analytical, creative, logical and so on, as each is of equal importance.

2. Creative writing is detail-oriented

Writing involves the five senses: see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. Crafting vivid sentences involves paying close attention to the world around us, which may or may not be unfamiliar to your child. Teach your student to recognize new details in a person, a place or a thing, and then to describe them as clearly as possible.

3. Creative writing is a vocabulary exercise

Routinely engaging in creative writing exercises stretches children's vocabularies, as words form the building blocks of original compositions. Teach your student to note which terms she uses when, and encourage her to experiment with new words. Provide her with a dictionary and/or a thesaurus to assist her in this endeavor.

4. Creative writing is purpose-driven

Effective authors write with a purpose. This is a difficult concept for students of all ages to grasp, but creative writing provides children and parents with an opportunity to discuss why they write. Teach your student to question her intentions before she begins, as well as while she writes, and emphasize that "for fun" is an acceptable response.

5. Creative writing is a meaningful source of confidence

Conceiving, drafting and polishing a piece, however brief your child's piece may be, is a tremendous accomplishment, and it carries with it an enormous sense of (deserved) self-confidence. Teach your student to take pride in her work, whether in creative writing or in a different area.

6. Creative writing is a healthy coping mechanism

Even young children experience negative emotions, such as stress and worry. Crafting a play, a poem or a short story is a form of stress relief, as well as a positive outlet for anger, fear, frustration, etc. Teach your student to identify and utilize such healthy coping mechanisms.

7. Creative writing is enjoyable

By high school, many students dread composition assignments, as well as the sheer act of writing itself. Teach your student to embrace such opportunities for expression while she is young, and she may develop an appreciation for the subject later in life. Frame writing as a pleasurable experience, rather than as an activity worthy of distaste.

Happy writing.

Homemade blueberry biscuits drenched in cinnamon butter

$

These biscuits are wonderful served right out of the oven and then topped with a generous portion of cinnamon butter. The butter melts from top to bottom and down the sides. And the blueberries are an added bonus. So that the sides of the biscuits are soft and tender, I like to bake them with the sides against one another in an iron skillet that's just big enough for the batch of biscuits to fit.

Blueberry biscuits with cinnamon butter recipe

Blueberry biscuits with cinnamon butter recipe

Serves 6

Ingredients:

For the blueberry biscuits

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup butter, chilled
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup dried blueberries
  • 2 teaspoons flour (for the cutting board when rolling the dough)
  • 2 teaspoons butter (for greasing the pan)
  • 3-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter

For the cinnamon butter

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 pinches ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons sugar

Directions:

For the blueberry biscuits

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  2. Into a medium-size bowl, add the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. Use a grater to shred the butter just as you would cheese. Add the butter to the flour mixture.
  4. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender or fork. Use a fork to roughly mix the ingredients together. Then use your hands to knead the dough.
  5. Sprinkle a little bit of flour onto a large cookie sheet or cutting board, and lay the dough on it. Roll the dough with a rolling pin until it's about 1 inch thick.
  6. Use a biscuit or large cookie cutter to cut out 6 biscuits. You might need to start with cutting 4 biscuits, and then roll out the dough again to cut the remaining 2 biscuits.
  7. Lay the biscuits side by side, leaning up against one another in a large, greased, iron skillet.
  8. Bake in the oven until the tops are a light golden brown (about 15 minutes).
  9. Serve warm with cinnamon butter.

For the cinnamon butter

  1. Add all the ingredients to small food processor, and mix them together until incorporated.
  2. Spoon the cinnamon butter into small, individual-size bowls, and chill them in the refrigerator.
  3. Serve with warm biscuits.

Jason Segel naked?

Jason Segel is funny — we've got nothing against him. But do any of us want to see him naked? Or think about him throwing down with his wife on his living room floor in front of a video camera? Not really. To take this one step further, the return of R-rated movies is starting to feel reminiscent of bad '70s porn. Why is the chick (forgive us for saying this out loud) hotter than the dude? Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz? We're well aware that Segel has dated some hot women in real life, but he's a movie star. All we're saying is these R-rated Hollywood couples don't look like our neighbors. Seth Rogen is guilty of this almost every time he makes a movie. He's cast (most notably) Katherine Heigl and Rose Byrne as his love interests. We're not trying to be superficial here, we're just saying let's level the playing field a bit.

The cloud?

Jason Segel's character, Jay, makes a valid point in this movie. Nobody understands the cloud. Most people over the age of 24 are intimidated by it and have no idea how to use it. Watching a movie that exaggerates that fear and takes it to its worst-case scenario isn't going to instill much confidence in hesitant cloud-users.

Weak premise

Is it even possible for something to be accidentally stored on the cloud and then have it accidentally disseminated to several purchased devices? Moreover, how many people in your immediate circle are giving super-expensive tablets to friends and family? Maybe one here and there, but a multitude of tablet gifts? That seems like a bit of a reach. If you can relate to this in your immediate circle, your friends are way cooler than ours.

Kid cliché

Kids are really getting a bad rap in movies today, don't you think? There seems to be a bit of a "we have kids, our lives are over — no more fun, no more sex" perception. We're to believe that Jay and Annie couldn't keep their hands off one another until they had kids and now they have to schedule sex. Where is this coming from? Is this Hollywood's idea of what it must be like to have kids when you don't have a staff?

Infants can stall your sex life for a bit, but from there you rely on setting early bedtimes for your kids (who cares if they don't go to sleep — make them read books or pretend you don't hear them playing with their toys until they get sleepy). Disney movies weren't created for kids, they were created for parents to plop their kids in front of them so they can sneak away to the bedroom and get fah-reaky. Trade babysitting time with other neighbors with kids. You have to be more creative, but it's not the sex life death sentence that movies portray it to be.

Trailer

The trailer did nothing to sell us on this movie. Cameron looks great and is an inspiration to those in their 40s, but we're just kind of tired of seeing her in her underwear (and by "we," we mean women). From there, we see a lot of panic, smashing of motherboards and an attack dog. Meh. There really wasn't anything in that trailer that made people want to race to the movie theater and pay way too much for a ticket and concessions.
