Victoria's Secret 2012 show: Some things should stay secret

0
0
When we see anything made by Victoria's Secret, all we see is our muffin top cascading over the top of a $50 slingshot and our legs looking like sausage casings in thigh-high stockings. Many of the fashions from the 2012 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show were gorgeous, but to make ourselves feel better, we'll focus on the ones that were... uh... a bust.

Victoria's Secret 2012 Fashion Show

Gone to the dogs

Since when did dressing like a pooch become sexy? If you think this is something your guy would dig on you, we need to talk. Dressing in poodle lingerie is wrong for reasons we can't really get into in this PG-13 platform. The hoop is symbolic of the hoops you are willing to jump through to please your guy. Is he willing to do the same for you? Poodle banana-hammock anyone?

Holy cow

Again with the animal theme. I'm pretty sure I speak for all women when I say we want lingerie that doesn't make us look like a cow. This poor model looks like the star of an adult movie version of Toy Story . That rope will come in handy. You can lasso your guy when he runs for his life after seeing you in this getup.

Rihanna takes the catwalk at Victoria's Secret show>>

Victoria's Secret 2012 Fashion Show

Luck of the draw?

Not in this case. If you think you're going to get lucky in this shamrock disaster, think again. This poor dear obviously drew the short stick when she had to strut out on the catwalk in this ridiculous costume. The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas called — it wants its cocktail-waitress uniform back. There is no denying the model in this shamrock disaster is breathtaking, but she has a look on her face that says, "It may be time for a new career path."

Victoria's Secret hates on Kate Upton>>

Victoria's Secret 2012 Fashion Show

Nymph-oh!

As in "Oh-no"! The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is supposed to be all about fantasy. In comparison to these other designs, this forest nymph look isn't that bad. The bra and undies are cute, the gloves are pretty and those shoes are to die for. But does this model realize she's about to be eaten alive by alien-sized orchids? Ladies, can you imagine trying to fit this thing in the minivan on the way to the soccer field? It's fairly obvious that Victoria has never had kids, ridden in a minivan or eaten a meal with more than 500 calories. Maybe that's her secret!

Poor Emily Owens! Even docs can't always get what they want

Ugh. Emily Owens just can't win! Not only is the show earning poor ratings, but now the character's archenemy is moving in on her longtime crush. Will Emily ever catch a break?

Emily Owens MD Cast

Of The CW's three brand-new shows this year, only one has yet to be picked up for a full season. Poor Emily Owens, M.D. is still floundering around for an extra lift — much like its lead character, Emily . Luckily, The CW has a couple things planned to spice up her life.

First, The Hollywood Reporter announced earlier today that Buffy the Vampire Slayer's D.B. Woodside will soon join the cast. He'll play the husband of Dr. Gina Bandari, Emily's b****y, intimidating advisor. Hopefully, the addition of the hunk-and-a-half will boost ratings, as Woodside is certain to attract at least a few of his former fangirls.

Emily Owens MD's Emily and Cassandra

Second, the next episode will continue to make Emily the most relatable character on television, as her worst enemy goes after her biggest crush. While ending up in the same hospital as your arch-nemesis from high school and your crush from med school seems a little farfetched, everything else about Emily's life is pretty realistic. Having a crush on your best friend is absolutely something every girl can relate to, right? Then, when Emily made the unfortunate mistake of dramatically confessing her love for him, she was shot down. Isn't that almost always the case?

Leave it to Emily — and the rest of womankind — to make things worse. In an effort to make Will believe she was over him, she told him she had a crush on a fifth-year resident, Micah. When did she announce this? Right as her enemy, Cassandra, walked past. Before the end of the day, the news had gotten around to Micah. Luckily, when Emily explained, he completely understood. He's kind of amazing, right?

On Tuesday's episode, Emily and Cassandra go head-to-head again. This time, Cassandra announces she likes Will and she plans on making a move. Try as she might, Emily can't keep the two apart. Finally, Will asks Emily if she'd be bothered by his dating Cassandra. In true best-friend fashion, Emily says it's fine.

Now that Will is 100 percent out of the running, Emily Owens fans are no doubt hoping it's Micah she ends up with and not the completely aloof Will.

Good luck, fans... and good luck, Emily Owens, M.D.!

Taylor Swift's "State of Grace"

Taylor Swift continues the promotional tour of her new album, Red, with an appearance on FOX Television's The X Factor.

TaylorSwiftXFactor

If you haven't had enough of Taylor Swift yet, don't worry, there is more coming your way very soon. The best-selling country artist — who is promoting her latest album, Red — will be heading to your television next week.

Swift, who appeared on Dancing With the Stars last week, is headed to another competition show, this time of the vocal variety. The 22-year-old will appear on FOX's The X Factor on Thursday, Nov. 15.

She will perform her latest single, "State of Grace," for the first time on television, so it will be a fresh appearance for the singer and her fans. The song comes from her fourth studio album, Red, which has sold over 1.2 million copies since its debut in late October.

The Grammy-winning artist's performance on the Simon Cowell show comes at a critical time for the FOX network because it is happening in the middle of November sweeps. This marks the time when networks measure ratings and set advertising rates for the next quarter.

Swift's appearance will be on the ever-important results show, as Cowell and network executives are looking for a massive ratings boost. Even with retooling the hosts and judges panel this season, the show has struggled against newer competitor The Voice.

If Swift and the other huge musical guest, One Direction, can bring viewers and ratings into play for the show, then maybe Cowell will be less cranky for the second half of the season.

The X Factor airs on Wednesdays at 8/7c, when the performers take the stage. The results show happens at 8/7c on Thursdays, on the FOX network.

Gluten-free Friday: Eggplant boats with millet and vegetables

0
0
Whether you're searching for a light meal or hearty appetizer, try this recipe for eggplant boats stuffed with millet and vegetables. Perfect for a gluten-free Friday!

Eggplant boats stuffed with millet and vegetables

Tip: Gluten can be found in many different foods and products, from ketchup to soy sauce to candy and seasonings. While SheKnows.com tries to ensure these recipes are gluten-free, carefully read the ingredient labels of all food and food products you use for these recipes to ensure they are also gluten free.

Millet is a type of grain that is gluten-free. It grows as tall grass and, like corn, forms as ears called "heads." It's versatile since it can be used in dishes prepared as cooked cereal, or in side dish recipes like this one. It's good for you, too — it's high in protein, vitamins and fiber. The flavor of the millet mixes well with the vegetables used in this recipe. Serve this as a light meal or appetizer.

Eggplant boats stuffed with millet and vegetables

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cooked millet
  • 2 small eggplants
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1/2 white onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup gluten-free vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: Parsley sprigs for garnish

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Pour one-and-one-half cups of water in a 12 x 9-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Cook the millet by bringing one cup of water to a boil, add the millet, cover and reduce heat to low. Cook until the water has been absorbed. Remove from heat, fluff with a fork and set aside.
  3. Slice off the tops of the eggplants, then slice them in half, lengthwise. Score the insides and remove the flesh. Be sure to leave a bit of the eggplant shell intact.
  4. Dice the eggplant flesh and set aside.
  5. Heat the olive oil in a saute pan over medium heat. Add the onion, carrot and celery and cook for about four minutes or until they soften.
  6. Add the eggplant and garlic and cook for about three minutes or until the eggplant is soft.
  7. Add the broth, salt, pepper, sage and red pepper flakes and bring to a boil. Once boiling, cover the pan and reduce the heat. Allow the mixture to cook until most of the liquid has absorbed.
  8. Combine the eggplant mixture with the millet and toss. Add the Parmesan cheese and mix well.
  9. Spoon the mixture into the eggplant shells and carefully place in the pan of water.
  10. Place in the oven for about 15 minutes or until warmed through.
  11. Sprinkle with torn parsley.

Kirstie Alley "was trying not to be a whore"

Kirstie Alley goes on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to try to to set the record straight about her "affairs" with John Travolta and Patrick Swayze.

KirstieAlleyAffairsKirstie Alley has been making a lot of noise this week, not for her performance on Dancing with the Stars, but for a few chapters in her new book, The Art of Men.

The actress stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday to promote her new tome and to clarify a few salacious stories being passed amongst the tabloids. The 61-year-old set the record straight to the late-night talk show host.

In her interview with Kimmel, she said, "Can I just clarify, these were not sexual affairs. I think John Travolta is and has remained one of my best friends for almost 25 years, 26 years.... before he was married [to actress Kelly Preston], and I was married. But I fell in love with him."

The two actors met during the filming of the 1989 movie Look Who's Talking, and the reality show star said that they now have "the most brilliant friendship."

Alley also mentioned that she has a close relationship with Travolta's wife.

Things were a bit stickier with Patrick Swayze, whom she met on the set of North and South in 1985. They engaged in an emotional affair while they were both married. He was married to dancer Lisa Niemi until his death in 2009 from pancreatic cancer, and Alley was married to actor Parker Stevenson until they split up in 1997.

While the Cheers alum is "proud" that she never slept with Swayze, it has to be tough for the deceased actor's widow to hear this news.

It doesn't seem as if Alley has lost any sleep over her revelations, though.

As she told Kimmel, "My mother told me I would be a whore if I didn't marry someone I had sex with, so I was trying not to be a whore."

OK, whatever works for you, Kirstie.

The CW: "More Beauty and the Beast, please!"

0

Everyone loves The CW's awesome interpretation of Beauty and the Beast! Even The CW loves it: They've ordered a full season of the show.

Beauty and the Beast stars Jay Ryan and Kristin Kreuk

We hope you're enjoying Beauty and the Beast because it's sticking around until summer. The CW has officially ordered the "back nine" episodes for the show. That means we've got the rest of a long, full season ahead of us!

Despite never faring quite as well in viewership as competing stations like NBC and ABC, The CW continues to pick up more viewers with each of its stellar new shows. Beauty and the Beast is currently averaging about 2.4 million viewers an episode. While that's not exactly Super Bowl numbers, it's nothing to scoff at. The CW continues to be one of the highest-rated stations among viewers aged 18-49 .

Arrow on the salmon ladder

It's no wonder, really. While everyone else is offering reality shows or crime-scene dramas, The CW is offering something we all long for: escapism. Just like Gossip Girl's Chuck and Blair or The Vampire Diaries' Elena and Stefan/Damon, Beauty and the Beast continues to hint at one epic, fairy tale-worthy romance. It also helps that they do a stellar job at landing hotties for their casts. All of the previously mentioned shows boast their fair share of hotties, but you can find even more on the sets of Supernatural and the brand-new Arrow, with Stephen Amell, which was also recently picked up for the remainder of the season. Hot guys and steamy romance are exactly what you need after a long day of work and dealing with your far-from-perfect quasi-boyfriend.

Luckily for us, The CW will continue to grace us with our new favorites. We've got all winter and spring to wait for Cat and Vincent's first, second and millionth kiss on Beauty and the Beast. As for Arrow, we'll keep anxiously awaiting the loss of Oliver's shirt and the return of the salmon ladder.

Thanks, CW, for giving us girls to root for and boys to swoon over!

Rihanna and Chris Brown duet: Other celebs who should do it

0

Rihanna and Chris Brown’s new duet, "Nobody's Business," has the rumor mill abuzz about their mysterious relationship, but the tumultuous twosome are sticking to their "we're not dating" guns. In the spirit of duets between dueling celebs, we propose the following collaborative musical efforts.

Rihanna and Chris Brown Performing at Madison Square Gardens"Big Birds Don't Cry" by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney

After Mitt Romney proposed sending Big Bird and his fellow PBS stars packing to help cut budgetary costs, the flightless Sesame Street fowl popped up everywhere, from television ads to internet blogs. Now that the election is over, we think a duet between Obama and Romney could be therapeutic. Set to the tune of the classic Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons song "Big Girls Don't Cry," Baromney's single — "Big Birds Don't Cry" — could capitalize on the popularity of this political meme by espousing an important lesson: What's done is done. We're positive Big Bird would have retained his trademark optimism if Romney had given him the axe, so Romney should likewise realize there's no sense crying over flaky voting constituents.

"Once, Twice, Three Times a Liar" by Lindsay Lohan and the L.A.P.D.

How does that old saying go? "Fool me once, shame on you — fool me twice, shame on me?" The things the troubled Lohan has falsely sworn to include being sober, not shoplifting, not violating her probation and — most recently — not being in the driver's seat when plowing into the back of an 18-wheeler. Too bad the truck driver asserts he saw the teetotaler hop into the passenger's side before the Five O arrived, and now LiLo faces criminal charges that may actually end up in her serving jail time.

There's no doubt Lindsay Lohan is once, twice, three times a liar... and then some. Perhaps if she hits the stage with the L.A.P.D., they'll feel a little less "shame" over being fooled by the celeb so many times.

Lindsay Lohan is wanted for lying to the cops>>

"We are Never Ever Gonna Make Up Our Frickin' Minds" by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

Airing all her dirty romantic laundry via her music seems to work for Taylor Swift, so perhaps Robsten should give it a try. Taylor is constantly casually dating someone, then very publicly breaking up with said someone, then setting their failed relationship to music. Rob and Kristen's cycle keeps repeating as well... except that instead of moving on to other celebs, the pale-skinned pair continually hook up and break up with each other — over and over and over. Not even a messy cheating scandal could keep the clingy couple apart for long. So, maybe if they steal a page from TayTay's playbook and sing a duet about their tumultuous bond, they can kick their nasty little habit of each other for good. After all, it always seems to work for Miss Swift.

Was the Kristen Stewart cheating scandal faked?>>

"It's All Good in the Idol Hood" by Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj

Ever since J.Lo and Steven Tyler bid the American Idol judges' table sayonara, trouble has been a-brewing on set. The show's producers quickly nailed down pop legend Mariah Carey to warm one vacant seat, and almost as quickly, they miffed Mariah by signing on wildcard rapper Nicki Minaj. In the blink of an eye after saying goodbye to J.Lo's booty, the once-amicable Idol set morphed from playful jabs to one step shy of throwin' 'bows.

However, since Carey just released an Obama-inspired ballad, we think the singer should set a good example for her beloved president and his ex-opponent by putting her animosity toward her own rival behind her. The riff, which would also reassure fans of the Fox show that all is well, could be titled, "It's All Good in the Idol Hood." Subtitle? "B****** Be Crazy."

About A Memoir of Grief A Memoir of Grief by Jennifer Weiner

Here's the synopsis: Artists have their appetites. This is what Ellie King would tell herself when discovering lacy panties in the backseat of her husband Gerry’s Cadillac, when Gerry was too self-involved to embrace their only son, or when he insisted on summers in The Hamptons and bespoke suits from London when, in fact, as critics pointed out, his once thriving writing career was past its prime, and they were buried in debt.

Yet, Ellie tried her best to portray the charmed, whimsical life she had dreamed of since her days as an English major at Wellesley College — the kind of life a sophisticated literary couple should be leading: chauffeured soirees, nostalgic trips to Europe, and cozy evenings filled with cups of strong black espresso.

The skeletons that Gerry King harbored in his closet were known by only one other person: Ellie. And she wanted to keep it this way. She had given up everything for him.

However, when Gerry dies of cancer, he leaves something behind that would expose all of their dirty secrets; something that would jeopardize the mask that Ellie worked so hard to front. And when it gets into the wrong hands, Ellie is forced to do the unthinkable…

In A Memoir of Grief , Jennifer Weiner exposes a woman’s world of shattered dreams and raises an intriguing question: How far would you go to protect your pride?

Megan Mulry's A Royal Pain is a funny, sexy book about relationships, appearances and identity. Oh, and falling in love with royalty. Here is SheKnows' interview with the author.

SheKnows: You're very active on Twitter. Can you give us a synopsis of A Royal Pain in 140 characters?Twitter image

Megan Mulry: Independent American woman unwittingly falls for British Duke. Bronte has been burned before; Max is used to having his own way. Sparks fly!

SheKnows: That's perfect! Speaking of A Royal Pain, where did you get the title?

A Royal Pain coverMegan Mulry: It was originally How to Deal with a Duke when I wrote it. Then it was Royal Strings Attached. Then it was A Royal Mess. But it still wasn't right. In April, I was standing in the lobby of the O'Hare Hilton at an industry conference with Dominique Raccah, Sourcebooks Publisher; and Deb Werksman, Sourcebooks Editorial Manager; and we were bemoaning the fact that a winning title [for the book] didn't seem to be leaping out at us.

I sort of muttered, "My husband just calls it a royal pain in the ass."

And then I was embarrassed that I had been so irreverent with the two women who are effectively my boss and my boss' boss .

Then there was this little pause, and Dominique said, "I like it!"

And Deb nodded. And I thought, wow, I can't believe they're going to put the word ass right there on the cover.

SheKnows: A Royal Pain is the first in a series of books that pairs Americans with British royalty. What inspired you to write about that phenomenon?

Megan Mulry: I have always been enchanted with all things British. I majored in British Literature. I lived in London for nearly four years when I was first married. And then about five years ago, I got completely hooked on Regency romances. After a while, I decided I wanted to write a book that used a lot of the same ideas and constructs found in those books — beautiful clothes, attention to social mores, a peek into the world of the British aristocracy — but I wanted it to take place in a contemporary setting, with modern accoutrements and sensibilities. Judith McNaught was a great inspiration, with her conflicted American heroines who manage to snag powerful British dukes.

Megan MulrySheKnows: Can you tell us any more about the other two books in the series, Earl Meets Girl and L is for Lady?

Megan Mulry:Earl Meets Girl picks up where A Royal Pain left off. It is the story of Max's younger brother, Devon, who's the quintessential Regency rake transplanted to the 21st century.

As he describes his life goals to Max, Devon says he wants to "drive an obnoxiously fast car, live in an aggressively modern apartment that is not child-friendly, stock his wine rack with big Barolos, and shag. In reverse order."

He's completely clueless when he falls for Bronte's close friend, an American heiress and shoe maven named Sarah James, and [he] has no idea how to deal with a "normal" relationship.

L is for Lady is the third in the series and depicts the young, rebellious sister of Max and Devon, Abigail Heyworth. She's the one who has always tried to escape from her aristocratic roots.

SheKnows: What's up next for you after these three books? More in this series? Venturing in another direction?

Megan Mulry: I wrote my first historical novella, and that will be coming out in the fall of 2013. It was fun, but it was a serious amount of work! I am sort of obsessive about language and ended up double checking nearly every word for usage to make sure it existed before 1808. I am now a frequent user of the Twitter hashtag #oldwords. I'm not sure it was the best use of my time!

I've also been fast-drafting another British-American trilogy with the working titles Palm Beach Regency, Hollywood Regency and French Regency.

SheKnows: What books are on your nightstand?

Lindsay Lohan cancels on Barbara Walters and 20/20

0
0
The actress was scheduled to do a tell-all interview with the 20/20 correspondent next week, but at the last minute, her new PR firm made her cancel.

Lindsay Lohan

After being fired by her publicist last month, Lindsay Lohan has been having a hard time finding someone to represent her. But it looks like she found a brave soul, or souls, and the new company is taking control quickly.

And for Lohan, the best way to keep her under control may be just not to allow her any interviews. The actress announced today she would be canceling her previously planned interview with Barbara Walters.

"The troubled star, who is facing new legal problems, has pulled out of her scheduled interview with Barbara Walters for the November 16 edition of 20/20," said Yahoo!. "It was to be the first major TV interview the Liz & Dick star has done in several years, and it was touted as a 'no holds barred, no questions off-limits' conversation."

It may be smart of Lohan's new team to keep her from an interview, but it means fans who were hoping for a glimpse into what the actress has been up to, in her own words, will be disappointed.

But Lohan has been in some trouble recently, and chances are Walters would have asked about her numerous legal problems, including a car crash and a "domestic dispute" with her mom, Dina. Lohan also was reportedly found passed out over the summer on the set of Liz & Dick, causing her assistant to call 911. She later said it was exhaustion, but she has not spoken about it publicly. Or spoken about anything else for that matter.

The interview had already been publicized, and it looks like ABC will have to find a last-minute replacement for the actress . The network is probably not happy about it.

And no matter how good the new PR firm is, it will be up to Lohan to decide whether she wants to change her life.

Patrick Schwarzenegger: "I might... have a future in politics"

0
0
The next generation of America's most famous political family may be following in their parents' footsteps. But one of them, college freshman Patrick Schwarzenegger, has plenty of time to make the decision.

Patrick Schwarzenegger

Until a few months ago, Patrick Schwarzenegger was best known as the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver and a member of the Kennedy family. But a few months ago, younger generations learned all about him when he was rumored to be dating Taylor Swift .

But in the future, Schwarzenegger, a member of America's most famous political family, may want to follow in that family's footsteps. On election day, Schwarzenegger tweeted that this election season has made him think about his future.

"Currently in a political debate with my friends about Romney vs Obama," he said. "I might actually have a future in politics now that I think about it."

It does seem that a run for office is in Schwarzenegger's blood. Not only is his mom's family the Kennedys, but his dad is the former governor of California. Schwarzenegger's granduncle was the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. The 19-year-old also has many family members still in the political world, including a cousin whom he tweeted to on Nov. 6.

"Huge huge huge congrats to my cousin @joekennedy for winning the congress seat in Massachusetts."

After election day was over, Schwarzenegger decided to share some political views with his 67,000 followers on Twitter.

"Congrats President Obama!" he tweeted. "Lets all work together to get out of this economic slump and bring our national debt where it should be!"

But as a college freshman at University of Southern California, the young Schwarzenegger has plenty of time to make a decision. For now though, he does enjoy the political process .

"Hope y'all go out and vote," he wrote. "Getting the 'I Voted' sticker is worth it alone to go."

Voters upset Usher was allowed to cut in line

0
0
The singer was doing his civic duty by voting, but he caused trouble when he skipped the lines because of his fame.

Usher

During election season, many celebrities push for the public to vote, while very few of them talk about how they vote. And we think of them as standing in line with everyone else. This was especially true in the Nov. 6 election, when so many people were shown all across the country standing in line for hours. But at least one celebrity didn't have to wait in line to vote this year.

"The lines were long at polling sites throughout Fulton County on Tuesday. But not for pop star Usher," said Johnny Edwards with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Usher was ushered to the front of the line when he came through a back door at the Bill Johnson Community Activity Building in Roswell."

And even if no one in line had seen him go through the back door, the singer took photos of himself and posted them on Twitter, getting rid of any doubt he didn't stand in line to vote — like everyone else. And this didn't sit well with those who did wait their turn.

"The special treatment of the Grammy Award winner infuriated non-celebrities who stood waiting," said Edwards. "Fulton elections Interim Director Sharon Mitchell confirmed Thursday that the singer — whose full name is Usher Raymond IV — had made arrangements for voting in advance."

Fellow voters didn't feel it was fair that just because Raymond is a celebrity, the county felt he shouldn't have to wait as long as everyone else.

"I take the voting process very seriously, and I was just taken aback that this was allowed to happen," Alan Christian, a voter, told the Associated Press.

But Mitchell said their long lines might have only become longer if Raymond had been allowed to wait with everyone else.

"It was better for us not to create a distraction from a celebrity for other voters," Mitchell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Raymond has not yet commented on the controversy, but anyone who wants to know what it looks like when a famous person votes can just search for his Twitter page.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez break up. A week ago

0
0
Bieber and Gomez are both focused on their careers right now. And according to sources, their schedules were just too busy for them to stay together.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

Today is the day Beliebers everywhere have been dreaming of. Justin Bieber is again single.

Actually, it looks like the day happened a week ago, but Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez kept their breakup quiet. Today, however, a source confirmed to E! News that what seemed like the perfect couple has indeed called it quits.

"Because of their crazy schedules, it was getting harder and harder to maintain a relationship," the source told E!

There had been rumors about the breakup in recent weeks, but no one was talking. Thursday night, Bieber added fuel to the rumors. He was seen out with 19-year-old Victoria's Secret model Barbara Pavlin at the Broadway play The Lion King.

Bieber and Gomez made their relationship public in February 2011 by attending the Vanity Fair Oscar party together, and they have seemed happy since.

"I am happy," Gomez told E! that year. "I'm really happy."

But the two are both young and focused on their careers right now. Bieber is currently on a nationwide tour, and Gomez is in the middle of multiple projects. She recently talked about how hard it is to be a good friend because when she has a free moment, she has to choose between her friends and her boyfriend.

"I actually did talk to Taylor last week, and we were like, 'I don't even remember the last time I saw you,' which is really unfortunate," she told Glamour recently. "But if it gets too dire, I fly to Taylor or I fly home or I fly to Justin."

And Bieber's fans haven't exactly been nice to the actress, attacking her on the Internet mercilessly. She has worked to keep it in perspective.

"It hurts, it really does," she told Z100, according to E! News. "I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. I've been best friends with him for a very long time. It does hurt my feelings a lot, but I try not to focus on it."

Hopefully the two can continue the good friendship they've always had.

Top dogs

Think your dog is the very best? That might be true, but these canines have the medals to prove it. These top 10 Guinness World Record-holders possess incredible and often odd talents. Some can thank Mother Nature for their God-given abilities while others simply honed-in on their unusual skills. Either way, our list of top dogs truly gives us some to look up to .

Nature at its best

Tallest dog

It's a horse, it's a moose... it's Giant George. This record-breaking Great Dane holds the title of the worlds' tallest dog ever. Measuring 43 inches tall and weighing in at 245 pounds, the gentle giant spends his days with ordinary tasks like enjoying a home-cooked meal, playing at the park and sleeping on his very own queen-size bed.

Longest tongue

Keep your tongue-snatching cats far away from this one. Puggy the Pekingese and his 4.5 inch tongue holds the world record for the longest tongue on a dog. He may be a celebrity now, but the Guinness record-holder was once a lonely mange-ridden stray. Today, this Texas native has a forever home and is living proof that dreams do come true.

Smallest dog

Standing short at a mere 4 inches tall, long-haired Chihuahua Boo Boo proves that the best things come in small packages. As the smallest dog in the world, Boo Boo was only the size of a thumb at birth.

Longest ears

Tigger, the bloodhound, likes to play it by ear. Holding the record for the longest ears on a dog, measured at 13.75 inches and 13.5 inches for the right and left ears, respectively. Sadly, our long-eared friend passed away, but his legacy lives on as an honored inductee into the Bloodhound "Hall of Fame."

Oldest dog

You're my boy blue-y! The Australian cattle dog Bluey was born on June 7, 1910, and lived for 29 years, five months and seven days, approximately 129 dog years. His long and prosperous life as a working dog included herding cattle and sheep.

Nothing but skills

Balancing act

Sweet Pea was born to walk the line — with a can on her head. The Australian shepherd/border collie mix embraces her aboriginal tendencies by earning the record as the fastest canine to walk 100 meters with a can balanced on a head . She also excels at walking down the steps while balancing a 5-ounce glass of water .

Pop a wheelie

Tillman may be a British bulldog but he speaks X Games with a native tongue. As the record-holder for covering a 100 meter stretch of level car park in a time of 19.678 seconds during X Games XV in Los Angeles, this top dog lives life in the fast lane.

High jumper

Fit to be an Olympic all-star, Cinderella May holds the world record for the highest jump cleared by a dog. The Holly Grey cleared a 68-inch jump at the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge National Finals in 2006. A champion with a heart, Cindy is also a certified therapy dog.

A mouthful

Augie, the golden retriever, has a passion for balls. So much so that he can comfortably gather and hold five of them in his mouth at a time. We're talking regulation-sized tennis balls, of course.

Burst your bubble

This balloon-popping junkie set the record by popping 100 balloons in 44.49 seconds. Anastasia, the Jack Russell terrier, earned the world record, but her true accomplishment was a TV spot on Live with Regis and Kelly in 2008.

Vamps movie review: Bloodsuckers in super-cute high heels

0
0
Leave it to Amy Heckerling to succinctly skewer the undead cultural obsession with vampires by making a vampire comedy. Alicia Silverstone and Krysten Ritter are the two hippest vampires around, and they give that scowling Kristen Stewart a punch in the jugular.

Vamps

3 stars: Perfect for vamp lovers who like to laugh

Manhattan at night is everyone's idea of a good time, especially if you're a relatively young, skinny sexy vampire. Goody was turned into a vampire in the year 1841 by her "stem" vampire, Cisserus  — a sloppy, self-absorbed blood kitten, if you will. Eventually, Goody got so lonely that she convinced Cisserus to turn the sweet and perky Stacy  into a vampire, circa 1985 — and they've been BVFs since then.

Neither Goody nor Stacy drink human blood, however — they find it cruel. When it's time to feed, they pop a straw into a large New York rat and suck it like a juice box. They still crave human plasma but go to a 12-step program to manage their addiction, repeating the mantra, "one drop is too much, one family is never enough."

Vamps

One of the funniest moments in the film comes when Goody goes home with a coked-up rocker after a party, and just as his nose begins to drip blood from snorting too much blow, she is overwhelmed with hunger. It's just a couple of tiny droplets, but they are red, they are fresh and they are just hanging there on the dude's face.

Finally, Goody just can't control her urges and sticks her tongue deep into his nose, just to make sure she gets every last drop. And just like every girl who goes on a binge, Goody feels horribly guilty afterward.

The toothy tomb dwellers' lives get more complicated when Stacy falls fangs-over-heels for a cute mortal boy named Joey Van Helsing . Can this descendent of a famous vampire hunter really make a love connection with a vamp? Joey's father , who keeps the family tradition of slaying vampires alive, thinks not.

Vamps

Goody is charmingly nostalgic and is played perfectly by Silverstone. Having lived for over 150 years, she remembers a simpler time and longs for the excitement of the Industrial Revolution but not the bombardment of personal electronics.

These days, everything is moving so fast that Goody wonders whether staying young forever is worth it when she can't appreciate the technological advances the future brings. Her life and time is in the past. Here, writer/director Amy Heckerling creates a clever metaphor for aging. We all say we want to look young forever, but maybe we just really want to feel relevant forever?

As Goody and Stacy deal with coffin hair and vampire hunters, they are soon faced with a death-altering decision: stay undead or rejoin the world of the living . Dead or undead, Goody makes a beautiful sacrifice that is truly human.

Bottom line: Vamps is super cute and offers witty social commentary on these modern times. If you're a fan of Heckerling, you may recognize that pizza delivery guy as the same actor who delivered that famous pizza to Sean Penn in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Vamps is in theaters now and will release on DVD Nov. 13th.

Update your Thanksgiving tablescape on a budget

Tired of using the same ragged cornucopia you put on the Thanksgiving table when your son was 5? If it's time to update your holiday tablescape, don't blow your budget on a centerpiece you'll only use once a year. Try these modern ideas to give your Thanksgiving meal those final touches without breaking the bank.

Thanksgiving tablescape

You want your Thanksgiving table to look festive and fun, but man are those Thanksgiving pieces expensive. Instead of buying a high-end centerpiece, try these beautiful ways to decorate.

Fancy tablecloth and linens

You may want to splurge a bit on the tablecloth and linens so they last, but don’t buy a Thanksgiving-themed set. That means you can only use it at Thanksgiving.

Instead, go for plain designs in fall colors that you can reuse all year. Browns are great because they can be used for elegant place settings any time of year. You can even choose slightly more decorative linen napkins that have simple plaids, stripes or embellishments.

Place settings

There's no need to buy expensive china to have a lovely table. Department and discount stores often sell inexpensive plate ware, silverware and glasses in sets of four or six. Buy two different plate sets in solid colors that complement one another and mix and match them on the table to add a little color.

Decorations

There are some fun and simple ways you can add some extra pizzazz to your table without buying a $100 centerpiece. Check out these ideas.

Buy candles of various sizes in a single or two complementary fall colors. They can be set on the table alone or placed in a variety of inexpensive clear hurricane glasses .

Let nature be your decorator. Go outside and grab some leaves of various colors, acorns and even nice-looking sticks and arrange them down the center of the table. If you decide to use candles and items from nature, make sure you use the hurricane glasses for safety.

On your next grocery-store run, pick up some seasonal fruits, veggies and gourds to arrange on the table. Small pumpkins and squashes, pears or fall apples and the like are colorful and rustic decorations. Try using items that reflect the ingredients in the dishes you're serving.

Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt hired to write new Star Wars

Michael Arndt has won one of the most sought-after jobs in Hollywood: writing the first new Star Wars film since 2005.

Michael Arndt

When Disney announced that it would be acquiring LucasFilm — and therefore, the Star Wars films — opinions were split. Some people were excited that there would be three new films made, but others were worried that those three films wouldn't remain faithful to George Lucas' vision. Now, all those people can get a step closer to understanding what the vision for Star Wars will be because Disney has announced the hiring of a screenwriter for Episode VII.

"As preproduction of Star Wars: Episode VII begins, Lucasfilm has confirmed that award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new Star Wars film," the company said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

Arndt may be best known for writing Toy Story 3, which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards. He also wrote the screenplays for Little Miss Sunshine and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire .

"As revealed in the ongoing video series posted... on StarWars.com, Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story conferences with Arndt," the statement continued.

There had been rumors since the Disney announcement that Arndt had already written a treatment for the film, but he didn't comment.

Harrison Ford — who played Han Solo in the first three films  — had also said this week he would potentially be open to working on the films. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, better known as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, had also said they'd had lunch with Lucas earlier this summer to talk about the three new Star Wars films.

The first of the new Star Wars trilogy is not set to be out until 2015, but it looks like Arndt has already started the daunting task of writing the story.

Rihanna turns album-listening party into Sandy benefit

The singer has become involved with the relief effort for Hurricane Sandy and is getting her fans involved as well, even if she has to bribe them with some new music.

Rihanna

When Rihanna releases an album, it's an event. Not only did the singer plan a listening party this week, but she announced a worldwide tour followed by a months-long, nationwide tour. But she is pushing some of that aside to help others.

Friday night, Rihanna decided to preview her album for some fans, in return for donations for the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. The event was held at Jay-Z's 40/40 club, and the New York Daily News' relief effort collected the items that Rihanna's fans donated to the cause.

"Everybody's asked to donate blankets and bleach... they want cleaning [supplies], brooms, [and] sleeping bags. And they get to listen to the album if they donate that stuff," Rihanna said, according to The Huffington Post.

The event is normally free, but Rihanna decided to take the opportunity to donate to the cause that she obviously feels so passionate about.

"Now is the time for us to come together and do whatever we can to aid those in need," Rihanna told the New York Daily News to promote the event.

She also announced she would be donating 1,000 sleeping bags to the effort, as well as $100,000 to the Food Bank for New York City.

"It's really difficult to see something so tragic going on and not be able to do anything about it," she told Andy Cohen on a live Facebook chat on Thursday, according to The Huffington Post. "There's nothing you can control — it's Mother Nature. It's really sad what happened here."

Rihanna showed up at the event as well, offering one more reason to come out and donate. Her album Unapologetic will be out Nov. 19.

Other stars are doing what they can to help the effort as well. Justin Bieber announced through his Twitter account that for his shows in the area, he would donate $1 to the cause for every ticket sold. Lady Gaga also donated $1 million.

"If it wasn't for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today," Lady Gaga said when announcing her donation.

An interview with Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead

If you've been keeping up with The Walking Dead's gruesome gore and gut-wrenching glimpses into apocalyptic terror — you're probably addicted. So are we.

Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead

When we heard we would get the chance to speak with the newest alpha female on The Walking Dead — our hearts almost stopped.

Not to worry — we didn't wake up as walkers, but we were ready to devour every detail she could give us. Lauren Cohan plays Maggie — a feisty eldest daughter, loving girlfriend and ruthless fighter. And if you watched last week's painstakingly emotional episode, with Lori gone, it's up to Maggie to step up.

Here at SheKnows, we got the incredible opportunity to hear insight directly from "Maggie," as we sat down for a chat with this surprisingly charismatic, down-to-earth and multidimensional actress. She was thoughtful, intelligent and passionate about her work, and she emphasized the familial bond the entire cast has with each other.

On last week's episode

SheKnows: Let's talk about last week's traumatizing episode, in which Lori dies. I have to say your acting was so powerful — what was it like cutting the baby out of Lori?

Lauren Cohan: It was insane. We really had the baby inside — not the real baby, obviously — a fake baby inside that belly. We switched it out to be a real baby, and we actually use a real baby for a lot of what happens following that. [There's] not so much I can say that the scene doesn't say already — it was traumatizing, and it was beautiful watching her give that farewell to Carl and getting the chance for the three of us to be in that room.

SK: When you came out with the baby and saw Rick , the emotional reaction you both had was incredible. How many takes were needed?

LC: Thank you so much! Yeah, it was maybe two — I don't even know if we did it more than once. Everyone is so "on" on the show, we generally kind of tend to be "there," right out of the gate. Andy [Lincoln] was my rock in that scene — all I have to do is lock eyes with him and try to get myself and the baby and the message over to him. You see it in the scene — it was so painful, and [it] is such an honor to work with these guys.

On the future of the season

SK: With an amputee and a newborn on the set, how does the group fare with those kinds of limitations?

LC: Well, we have Scott [Wilson]  — [he] is so amazing and such a sweetheart. He has to do all kinds of funny tricks to hide his leg. He wears a green screen sock with matching, flourescent-green Crocs. He has mastered ways [of hiding his leg] — sometimes, he positions his [one] leg behind his other — but only someone as good as him can handle that and amazing action [at the same time]. And the baby... is so soft and gushy. The baby is a joy to have on set — everybody is probably ready to have kids.

SK: We have gotten to see Maggie evolve through the storylines. How does it feel to be the alpha female?

LC: It's interesting. People were asking if I take on a maternal role with the baby. [That's] not the case — because she is the alpha and so able-bodied. She is more of a soldier. We are going to see more of that — this chick can get stuff done. [There are] huge challenges ahead.

SK: Is there a cure anytime in the future?

LC: No  — lots of other good stuff happens, but there is no cure.

SK: We see the Dixon brothers may have a reunion in the future. Is Merle as happy to see the rest of the group as he is [to see] his brother?

LC: It's a... com-pli-ca-ted situation. You're not getting the smooth without the rough, in this case. It is amazing! It's going be funny and volatile. It's great — Michael Rooker as Merle is the most hysterical, charming pain in the butt. He's great — we love him.

SK: Andrea and Michonne have been through a lot. Is the tension between them similar to that between siblings or that between lovers?

LC: That's a good question to leave up to debate. [It is] however people want to take [it]. I love the ambiguity of it — it's kind of awkward.

SK: In the comics, Maggie marries Glenn. Is this something fans can look forward to?

LC: I don't know, and it's not something I can say [anything] about now. We will see what the future holds. I would hope, somewhere down the line, we see that. The hopefulness of the couple is great.

SK: About Glenn — is the chemistry as good offscreen as it is on screen?

LC: I love Steven [Yeun] , but the chemistry is onscreen. He and I see these conversations people have, and they analyze every "arm touching." We are just good friends. It's like being in college together.

On the series

SK: What has been your favorite walker-killing weapon?

LC: Machete — l just love that thing. It's just light and quick. You can hook it underneath, get it from the top, or take the head off it with it. It's not too bulky.

SK: Who was the most unexpected death of all?

LC:Sarah [Wayne Callies] . Actually, it's in the comic... but you still never expect it.

SK: What storyline of Maggie's has been your favorite?

LC: Of what we have seen so far, I have had a great couple things start [that] will continue through the season. Maggie is strong and [will] have a chance to show how strong she really is. I couldn't even pick [a favorite storyline], but for one thing, having to be a badass and having a kickass romance is pretty much on top of my bucket list.

SK: Were you "Team Rick" or "Team Shane"?

LC: Team Rick, I guess — I mean, yes, Team Rick. We had our doubts, but we are going to see why it's Team Rick. Everyone was right to have their doubts last year, but just like any dysfunctional family, you have to have a little faith in your leader.

On her, as an actress

SK: You played the strong vampire Rose in The Vampire Diaries and the strong daughter on The Walking Dead. Very pro-female empowerment — are these your ideal roles?

LC: Definitely, definitely — I just love it. [I'm] really attracted to strong people with strong morals [and to] playing those types of characters. Maggie is just like a dream role for me. [Starting off], you see this good, Christian girl, and [she] meets a new group. You would have never known any of us would [be] where we are [now], and there's still so much potential for all of us. I feel like she's still the same person, and you just put her in a different context. She is so great to play — she's really just a farm girl. Everyone's pretty normal. You have a sheriff, [a] pizza-delivery kid, and a farm girl .

It was an absolute pleasure interviewing Lauren Cohan. She was insightful and well spoken . Looking forward to watching the rest of the season — it sounds like even more drama is around the corner!

We're Team Maggie!
