According to the New York Times, the novelist who based her themes on the racial injustices within the country during the apartheid era died on Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Here are a few facts that you may not have known about her.

Harry Potter and MMA star David Legeno found dead >>

1. Ms. Gordimer was the author of more than two dozen works of fiction

Gordimer's works included short stories, political essays and novels. She continued to write for over seven decades. Her first book of stories was Face to Face in 1949, and her first novel was The Lying Days, in 1953.

2. She was not a political person, but could not ignore the injustices surrounding her

Gordimer explored every aspect of South Africa in her work and was not afraid to expose the injustices that existed within the apartheid era. Her work vividly outlined the restrictions on black people by the white minority.

"I am not a political person by nature," Ms. Gordimer once said. "I don't suppose if I had lived elsewhere, my writing would have reflected politics much, if at all."

Glee star Becca Tobin's boyfriend found dead >>

3. She wanted to be a ballerina

As a child Gordimer had dreams of becoming a ballerina, but her love for dance was squashed by her mother's worries that something would happen to her because she was thought to have had a rapid heartbeat.

4. Three of her books were banned in South Africa during apartheid

The government wanted to censor what was going on in the country at the time, and Gordimer's work threatened that. Her novel A World of Strangers, published in 1958, was banned for 12 years. Another novel, The Late Bourgeois World, published in 1966, was banned for 10 years and Burger's Daughter, published in 1979, was banned for several months.

5. She was never detained or persecuted for her work

Although Gordimer's works conflicted with the South African apartheid government, there was never any action taken against her for her stories. Although, as mentioned above, some of her work was censored.

6. She was born to Jewish immigrant parents

Gordimer was born to Jewish immigrant parents on Nov. 20, 1923. The A World of Strangers author's father was a watchmaker and her mother was from Britain. Her parents did not have a happy marriage, as Gordimer revealed in an interview with The Paris Review in 1983.

"I suspect she was sometimes in love with other men," she confessed. "But my mother would never have dreamed of having an affair."

7. She has an older sister, Betty

8. Her work exposed the racial divisions within the country

It was thanks to Gordimer's books that international readers learned of the apartheid government's regressive legislation that discriminated between races.

9. It took her three decades before she ventured out of South Africa

According to the New York Times, aside from a trip to what is now known as Zimbabwe, Gordimer did not leave South Africa until she was 30 years old.

10. She married a dentist, and then an art dealer

In 1949 Gordimer married a dentist named Gerald Gavron, and while their marriage only lasted three years, they had a daughter together, Oriane. Gordimer then married art dealer Reinhold H. Cassirer two years later. They had a son Hugo together. Gordimer is survived by her son and daughter.

Katherine Heigl: Romantic comedies ruined my career >>

Heigl spoke with the Associated Press on Sunday about her career path, and was asked directly about her reputation for being difficult.

"I certainly don’t see myself as being difficult. I would never intend to be difficult," Heigl said. "If I've ever disappointed somebody, it was never intentional."

Heigl's new show, State of Affairs, has the actress playing a CIA employee who acts as a liaison to the President of the United States. Katherine's mom Nancy Heigl is acting as an executive producer on the show, and her daughter addressed her mother's reputation for being difficult as well.

"I don't think my mother sees herself as being difficult," Katherine said. "I think it's important to everybody to conduct themselves professionally and respectfully and kindly."

"I am her mother for sure, so of course I care about her interests," Nancy added. "But I'm just learning about executive producing. I'm a newcomer to it."

Katherine Heigl: Crowdfunding for film is a bust >>

Nancy and Katherine Heigl pitched the show to NBC, and so far the network hasn't seen any problems from the mother-daughter duo. NBC president Jennifer Salke described Nancy Heigl as "someone with a strong opinion."

Katherine Heigl added that it was a bit awkward to be asked about her reputation, and joked, "I think I’m a joy to work with."

Photos are strictly prohibited during any Broadway performance by Actors' Equity, the union for stage actors. According to Page Six, the show became slightly uncomfortable about 45 minutes into the 90-minute show.

2014 Tony Award winners: Neil Patrick Harris' big night >>

A source told the New York periodical that Harris, dressed as his transgender character, "leaned down into the audience and asked a woman, 'Are you drunk?' She waved her arms in the air and everyone assumed it was part of the act. Neil then berated her for taking photos, telling the audience she was sitting in seat 3A. He then sniffed, 'I hate you,' and turned on his high heels."

In the musical show, there is a moment that his character spits water at the audience. It sprays over a few rows of seats close to the front of the stage. However, the Tony Award winner took a different approach on this night. The audience member shared that "he spat the water straight at the woman."

It was a pretty dramatic moment described by the insider who said, "It was all a bit frosty and awkward. His anger was spectacular, especially the 'I hate you' bit. The audience went into a stunned silence. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife!"

Neil Patrick Harris reveals why he came out as a gay man >>

A rep for the show dismissed any anger on Harris' behalf. They told Page Six, "There is always an element of audience interaction in each show, and it is all in character."

Even NPH himself acknowledged that "spit happens" during the show regularly.

He retweeted a fan:

The 15-year-old appears eager to try his hand at everything, having already made his modeling debut for Man About Town, where he appears on the front of the high-end biannual magazine sporting a bomber jacket and a quiff.

According to the Independent, the editor of the mag, Ben Reardon, was thrilled to feature the young star.

David Beckham hailed as Underwear Model of the Century >>

"We are thrilled to feature Brooklyn Beckham in a world exclusive on the cover of the Spring/Summer 2014 issue. We could not have wished for a stronger subject than Brooklyn to bring this story to life." Reardon said.

The football enthusiast has even gotten a weekend job at a West London Starbucks, close to his parents' home. This strong work ethic has been spurred on by Brooklyn's famous parents, who want him to learn responsibility and ensure that he learns the value of money on his own.

Victoria Beckham says no to Kim Kardashian's wedding dress >>

"He has been trying out a number of jobs, including the Starbucks job," a source revealed to Us Weekly. "It's all part of him experiencing all walks of life and really working out what he wants to do. Victoria and David are keen for him to experience the things they did when they were his age — retail jobs, assistant jobs, working for free. They want to keep him grounded."

The whole Beckham family is ridiculously gorgeous >>

While it's an incredible experience to be able to work as an intern for Richie's company, according to the mag, Brooklyn is not experiencing the internship experience the way that most young people would do. He is apparently being chauffeured to work in London's Soho district in a Jaguar.

During his delirium, Christ Bearer — also known by his real name, Andre Johnson — cut off his own penis. However, he didn't lose his entire member, nor was it reattached by surgeons.

Northstar rapper Andre Johnson cuts penis in suicide attempt >>

He explained to the New York periodical, "Doctors didn't reattach it, but I definitely have some penis left. I always say a penis is a penis. And the sensation is still there. I definitely still get extremely aroused if I see a beautiful woman. That being said, I definitely believe sex is for mortals, and I am god. So this is a blessing, not a curse."

The 41-year-old star also clarified that it was not a suicide attempt when he injured himself and then jumped off the second-storey balcony of his North Hollywood, California, home.

He said, "By no means was I trying to kill myself. I was under the influence of PCP. It's a drug that I had stopped doing for years, but I just got back from Ohio and got back into that lifestyle for a few days. It definitely was not wise."

Nicole Scherzinger opens up about paralyzing bulimia battle >>

The Northstar member also knows how fortunate he is to have jumped from the second floor. If he had been on a higher floor, the outcome would have been much different.

"I was lucky I was only on the second floor. If I was any higher, it would have been a tragedy. The height didn't make any difference to me. I wasn't aware of the height," he said. "I was so happy to wake up in the hospital."

For now, the rapper is focused on his family and his new daughter, Kennedy, who was born only two weeks after his injury. He also has two other daughters, Lana, 2, and Lauren, 8.

Erin Andrews replaces "shocked" Pam Oliver on Fox sidelines

Brooke Burke-Charvet: Erin Andrews bad choice for DWTS >>

Andrews will be joining Joe Buck and Troy Aikman and Oliver's new team will include Kevin Burkhardt and John Lynch — but will no longer be on the sidelines.

Pam Oliver said she has had a chance to digest the news, which was relayed to her back in April.

"To go from the lead crew to no crew was a little shocking," Oliver told Sports Illustrated. "I said I wanted to do a 20th year [on the sidelines]. I expressed to them that I was not done and had something to offer. Again, I think it was predetermined coming in. Not at that meeting, but two years ago it was determined that no matter what I did or did not do, a change would be made for this year."

After receiving the news, Oliver said she met with other networks, but eventually decided to stick with Fox.

But some are wondering what Fox's decision-making process looked like. A "veteran NFL reporter" talked with Sports Illustrated on the condition of anonymity.

"She's not blonde, nor is she in the demographic," said the reporter. "I'm not naïve and I understand it's a business, but I think that Fox did not treat her as befits a woman who has been the female face of their sports operation for the past 19 years."

Erin Andrews shares her strength >>

Andrews is continuing her duties as the host of Dancing With the Stars, a job she was given after a shocked Brooke Burke-Charvet was let go.

But Oliver seems happy for her friend and thinks she deserves the job. She explained, "I think Erin is solid. They have made a determination and it just happened to be with a position I had held for almost 20 years. For people to pit us against each other is not necessary and not going to get far if the two of us don't participate."

Monteith's death sent shock waves through the Glee cast and its fan base. The 31-year-old actor was found dead on July 13, 2013, in his hotel room in Vancouver, Canada, after taking a toxic combination of heroin and alcohol.

Lea Michele is reportedly dating a male escort >>

This is not the first time Michele has paid tribute to Monteith since his death. In February, the actress/singer revealed that the lyrics to her song, "If You Say So," are actually the last words that Monteith ever said to her. On May 11, what would have been Monteith's 32nd birthday, Michele also posted a sweet photo of the couple sharing a laugh together. "The biggest heart and most beautiful smile," she wrote. "In all of our hearts.. We love you so. Happy Birthday."

Sadly, tragedy struck the Glee cast again last week when the boyfriend of cast mate, Becca Tobin, was found mysteriously dead in a hotel room in Philadelphia. The cause of 35-year-old Matt Bendik's death is unknown, but the time of his passing is eerily close to that of Monteith's.

Hot and spicy Asian-style garlic shrimp

$

I grew up in Asia, and some condiments are mainstays in the typical Asian kitchen cupboard. One of them is soy sauce. It's used in cooking and in dipping sauces — a lot. It's the same as how the Italians treat extra-virgin olive oil. Soy sauce spends more time on the table than inside the cupboard. Maintaining a duel-gastronomic culture (Asian and Italian) in my house means having more condiments and ingredients than a regular Italian home. You can forget about everything else, but never the soy sauce and the extra-virgin olive oil.

Here, I have a very simple recipe for shrimp marinated in lemon, sesame seed and soy sauce (of course) and then sautéed in a lot of garlic and as much chili as you can handle. I can only handle one chili, but you can add more to taste. I sauté the shrimp with the olive oil I use at home, and after a few minutes, I have an Asian-inspired garlicky and spicy appetizer for two.

Asian-style garlicky, spicy sautéed shrimp recipe

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound large shrimp, deveined and shelled (leave the tails on)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 chili, seeded and finely chopped (leave the seeds in if you want it spicier)
  • Ground black pepper
  • Fresh parsley, finely chopped

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, lemon juice and sesame seeds. You can adjust quantities to your taste. Mix in the shrimp, and set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat with extra-virgin olive oil, sauté the chili and garlic.
  3. Add the shrimp mixture. Sauté until cooked through and the liquid is reduced, about 8 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle with the pepper and parsley, and then turn off the heat.
  5. Serve while hot.

Jenny McCarthy announces her new show on SiriusXM

After playing coy last week while making the official on-air announcement that she would be leaving The View, McCarthy has revealed the new place she will call home. "After much consideration, I've taken a job which allows me to do what I do best, which is talk without ever having to interrupt anyone," McCarthy said on the show, and now SiriusXM radio is disclosing that she will be able to talk uninterrupted in her own series on satellite radio, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Bethenny Frankel in, Jenny McCarthy out at The View? >>

SiriusXM announced in a press release on Monday that McCarthy will be hosting an hour-long weekly series called Dirty, Sexy, Funny with Jenny McCarthy. The first show will be on Wednesday, July 16 and already has celebrity guests Chelsea Handler, Perez Hilton and the host's fiancée, Donnie Wahlberg, scheduled to appear.

It's likely that McCarthy, who openly admits that she can be a defiant rule-breaker, will fit right in with the SiriusXM family. The station took in radio bad boy, Howard Stern, after he was repeatedly fined by the Federal Communications Commission and allowed him to much more freely express himself.

Dirty, Sexy, Funny will tackle topics including parenting, marriage, dating and sex. "It's no secret that I love to talk," McCarthy said in a statement via Entertainment Weekly. "I'm excited to do it on SiriusXM without having to interrupt anyone or keep it clean. You can bet your sweet a** this show will live up to its title."

Sherri Shepherd also announced two weeks ago that she would be leaving The View. "It's been seven wonderful years on The View and after careful consideration it's time for me to move," Shepherd said in a statement to Deadline. "I look forward to the business opportunities that lay ahead for me and I'm incredibly grateful to my View family and my fans for supporting me on this journey." No news on Shepherd's immediate career plans yet.

In the video, Weird Al mimics the styling of Pharrell's video as he joyously walks his way through Los Angeles's Palace Theatre before his oh-so-familiar friends take over lip-syncing duties. "Tacky" takes a different spin on the original, highlighting the many ways that one can be tacky in the 21st century. Take notes, people.

Betty White: "Wrecking Ball" parody for Lifetime (VIDEO) >>

In typical Weird Al fashion, "Tacky" features a number of silly and WTF-worthy lines like, "I meet some chick, ask her this and that/Like are you pregnant girl, or just really fat?" And if you're looking for even more ways to avoid being tacky, as per the comedian, then make sure you don't print your résumé in comic sans, have fun threatening waiters with a bad Yelp review, and, my personal favorite, live tweet during a funeral.

Even if you're not interested in watching "Tacky" to hear the lyrics, you should at least have to give it a look for the video's star power. Much like the original, the parody professional calls upon friends, including Jack Black, Margaret Cho, Aisha Tyler and Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet.

"Tacky" is Weird Al's lead single off his upcoming album, Mandatory Fun, which drops July 15 and features parodies of hits of the past year, like Lorde's "Royals," Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Iggy Azalea's "Fancy." It will mark his last release in his contract with RCA.

Is college really the best choice for your teen?

$
0
0

Does your teen plan to attend college after high school graduation? Many teens are ready to start working and making a path for themselves in a career that doesn't require college, while others have a few goals in mind to accomplish before settling into the adult world. College isn't for everyone, and some teens are better off considering other options right away, rather than attempting a year or two of college halfheartedly.

Next step not always college

We checked in with author and CEO Patrick Bet-David about his tips for teens considering a different path than college. Bet-David's own path to career success took him from the military to Morgan Stanley. "I think college is a system that we've all kind of bought into and haven't really ever questioned," he shared. "Does someone really need four years to earn a degree? Why not two years? Why not a year and a half? Many of the engineering courses nowadays need to constantly update their curriculum because of how quickly things are changing," he adds. "But if a kid wants to be a doctor, lawyer, civil engineer or a specific trade, then college is necessary." Bet-David recommends that parents let their kids go to community college for two years, then decide if it's wise to invest in the next two years based on the discipline shown by their child.

Likes and dislikes

How can parents help guide their teens into careers that will work best for them? "I would spend more time as a parent trying to figure out what my child enjoys doing and what he's good at, than pushing him in a direction that I want him to go towards," says Bet-David. "Not only will trying to please Mom and Dad not fulfill him, but it could potentially have long-term effects of resentment towards them." Parents can do this with their children from an early age, and help them learn about themselves in relation to a career they might enjoy or not.

Widen your experience, then narrow it down

We asked if a variety of experience makes young adults more valuable to employers. "I think having several jobs and experiences can bring a ton of value to a future employer, but I do believe that the earlier you find out which industry you'll be a part of, the larger the victory you'll have in the long term," Bet-David says. He recommends that young adults determine the industry they plan to be in for at least 10 years.

Options to consider after high school

Bet-David offers the following list of potential avenues to pursue for graduates not heading to college.

  • The military: Bet-David lists the military as one of the best options for the undecided because, "it teaches discipline, independence and teamwork, responsibility, camaraderie, honor and leadership skills that can be applied to almost anything in life."
  • Travel: For graduates who are able, he recommends they, "see the world, learn about different cultures and see how other people live and do business. Spending time overseas will broaden and mature you, and employers are impressed when they see this on a resume because it shows real world experience in a foreign environment."
  • Master your trade: "You might recall former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's comments that pursuing a plumbing career might be a better choice than going to Harvard, and to his point if you have a special talent or skill that solves a problem that people are willing to pay for, master it and let it make you rich."
  • Volunteer: Sometimes volunteering is a great way to experience jobs in various fields. "If you're undecided about what you want to do, seek several volunteer opportunities in various fields to learn more about these industries," Bet-David shares.
  • Find a mentor: Finding someone you trust and who is already successful can be a golden opportunity. "Talk to them, discuss different options and try to get some clarity, directions or first steps to take."
  • Start a business: "It's very common for 18- or 19-year-olds to have an idea and turn it into a successful business," he shares. "Imagine how many kids didn't because they were influenced to take the traditional route of college despite aspirations of starting a business."
  • Get into sales: Starting off in a sales position in almost any industry is valuable experience teens can leverage later on. "It teaches important people and communication skills, and most importantly, sales teaches people to think on their feet and work around objection," he adds.
  • Focus on relationships: Face-to-face relationships are important, no matter which route you choose after high school. "Attend in-person networking events, invite the CEO of a company for a cup of coffee and just get to know as many different people in as many different fields as possible," Bet-David recommends. "You never know who might be able to help you or who you'll be able to help."

Switched at Birth: The hardest decision of all

$

0

Switched at Birth has had a few moments over these past three seasons that have made me cry. Admittedly, I can sometimes cry at the drop of a hat and have been known to shed a tear over a happy moment just as much as a sad one. I never thought they would air an episode that would rip my heart in two and proceed to stomp on it for a good half hour before leaving me a sobbing mess by the time the end credits rolled.

Missed last week's episode of Switched at Birth? Here's our review >>

How could they kill off Angelo?

This is supposed to be a light, ABC Family show. The drama is supposed to take us to the edge, but never actually go over it. Well, this time we went straight over the edge and into a freefall.

Even though it was incredibly hard to watch, I am hereby voting this episode my new favorite of the entire series. The writing, the acting, everything in it was perfect. The show took us through the journey of what it's like for a family to deal with a death and they basically did it in real time. I don't know about anyone else, but I went through each of the stages of grief right along with the characters on the screen.

At first, I didn't want to believe that anything bad would happen. I figured they'd hear some scary news about Angelo and then he'd wake up and be fine. Even after the words "brain-dead" were used, I didn't want to believe it. I was completely on board with Bay, Regina and even John's attempts to get second opinions and wait for Angelo to miraculously open his eyes.

Switched at Birth interview: Katie Leclerc promises insanity ahead >>

The varying responses everyone had to the news were extremely real, as well. It's understandable that some people would accept the news and want to abide by Angelo's wishes. It's also understandable that others would want to hold onto him as long as they could and ignore what he wanted in the hopes of a recovery.

But even when everyone accepted what was going to happen, I hadn't quite caught up and I thought how amazingly calm they all were as they discussed things like funeral homes and organ donation. Perhaps the worst moment of all came in the end when Angelo was wheeled away to the operating room. The family didn't even get the chance to sit by his bed during his final moments.

Don't get me wrong; I'm all for organ donation and I'm happy they made that decision, but I won't deny that I cried even harder knowing that his heart would stop beating with no one there to hold his hand. The logical side of me knew he was already gone by then, but it still hurt.

5 Switched at Birth spring finale questions to ponder until summer >>

To find out that it all could have been caused by an aneurism and that anger may have been a factor was almost too much and I don't know that I blame Daphne at all for losing her temper at her mother. I'm not saying Regina is to blame, but I also can't swear that I might not have said the same thing in Daphne's shoes. The problem is that one day Daphne's going to realize it wasn't her mother's fault and she's going to feel awful about what she said. I'm just not positive exactly how long it will take for her to come to that realization.

Most heartbreaking moments:

Angelo opening his eyes when he felt Bay's hand.

Bay imagining being in the delivery room with Angelo.

Angelo talking about becoming a father in French.

Bay opening her eyes to find Emmett there.

Nearly losing it myself when Daphne read the doctor's lips and found out Angelo was brain-dead.

Daphne imagining her wedding day with Angelo there. That's when my tears got out of control.

Angelo signing "I wouldn't have missed it for the world." Actually, that's when my tears really got out of control.

Bay not being able to remember the last conversation she had with Angelo.

Emmett pointing out that love meant doing what the other person wants, even if it wasn't what you wanted.

Bay calling her grandmother.

Angelo's mother saying goodbye to her son over the phone.

Regina imagining her and Angelo making up when Daphne was a baby.

What did you think of this episode of Switched at Birth? Were you expecting Angelo's condition to deteriorate that fast?

Vin Diesel posted a more pensive photo of himself on Facebook and it looks like he is on the movie's set. "Fast Seven is wrapped! A life changing experience," he wrote. "None of it would have been possible without you... the strength, conviction and confidence came from you, and I know together, we have made Pablo proud."

Walker's brother, Cody, who helped fill in Paul's unfinished scenes in the movie along with Caleb, also got in on the fun at the wrap party and posted an Instagram photo posing with Gibson. The youngest Walker brother also gave a shout out to Reach Out Worldwide, the charitable organization that Paul ran. Cody stepped into Paul's role after his brother's passing and now leads ROWW. "That's a wrap baby!" the caption on Instagram reads. "Look at those teeth!  @tyrese #beautiful #brothers #ff7 #FastandFurious7 #roww #Reachoutworldwide #Reachoutww #fastfamily #codywalkerroww."

It does not appear that Meadow was present at the party, but the 15-year-old recently surfaced publicly for the first time since Paul's accident. She posted a photo of herself looking happy on the beach with the simple caption, "glad to be back."

"I've never dated a celebrity before so it was very new to me — paparazzi and all that," Tran tells Palmer during the interview, which will air in its entirety on Wednesday, July 16. "And then, even the situation with Rihanna, you know the reason why people tuned into this so much was because it's relatable." Tran says she has plenty of girlfriends, and even family members, who have all experienced the case of the ex.

Surely, her experience is vastly different than that of her close ones since her triangle ends and begins with two of the biggest singers out right now, but she already knows that. "In this case, my boyfriend is a celebrity whose ex-girlfriend is an even bigger celebrity… so, not only am I fighting a battle with her, I'm fighting a battle with her 14 million fans or whoever else," Tran confesses. "So, imagine how that feels for me when I gotta get on Twitter and I see a whole bunch of stuff… they make up all kinds of crazy stuff and it's, like, they know nothing about me. But you know, because they know nothing about me, because I stay so mute sometimes, that leaves open space for them to say whatever they want."

On top of dealing with Rihanna and Brown's legal demons, Tran held back tears when admitting that the biggest obstacle of the entire situation was the "the heartbreak because it was a real situation."

What do you think of Tran's point of view? Let us know in the comment section below.

I stay active every single day and I've done that since the beginning [so] I just feel like energetically it's been really easy."

Speaking with Us Weekly, the dancing star opined, "I really truly believe that pregnancy is not a time to have an excuse to eat donuts. I haven't had any cravings believe it or not! [Pregnancy] is a time to be as healthy as you can be and build the foundation for your baby. I think that you should be even more conscious of what you're doing."

INTERVIEW: Abdi Nazemian's The Walk-In Closet takes us into the lives of the Iranian-American elite

Abdi NazemianSheKnows: What was your biggest inspiration while writing The Walk-In Closet?

Abdi Nazemian: I was inspired by all the novels I read that lovingly brought cultural communities to life, like Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake and Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. And while I found many phenomenal books about the Iranian experience (especially Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, which is an awe-inspiring work in print and on film), I didn't see anything representing my experience as an Iranian-American gay man. I really wanted to tell the story of the intersection of these two identities, and oddly enough, Kara, a straight white female, became my entry point into the story.

SK: Why did you choose to write your book from a female perspective?

AN: With very few exceptions, every story I have told has come from a female perspective. My therapist may have a better answer, but perhaps it has something to do with growing up gay in a heterosexual world. As a child, my points of identification in books, films and music were always women. I still prefer reading books about women, seeing films about women and hearing female singers, so I suppose it's natural that when it comes time for me to create my own stories, I enter them from a female perspective.

SK: How did you master the female voice for the book? What resources/research did you do?

AN: The majority of my friends are women, so luckily I have a wealth of resources to draw from on a daily basis. This novel deals specifically with the deep friendship between a straight woman and a gay man, and part of digging into this relationship was asking myself what the similarities and differences between the two characters are, especially when it comes to dating and sex. I asked myself whether the lead character, Kara, could have sex like a gay man. Researching this included chats with friends, as well as tours of online dating and hookup sites. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that Kara cannot have sex like a gay man, but you can read the book to see her trying.

SK: What was the biggest challenge you faced writing in a female voice?

AN: The biggest challenge in creating Kara's voice had less to do with her being female, and more to do with her being an outsider in the Persian culture she is writing about. I was born in Iran, and grew up entrenched in my own culture, so it was a challenge to write from the perspective of someone experiencing the culture from the outside. This was so much fun, though. Kara allowed me to rediscover my own culture, and led me to appreciate its sounds, tastes and traditions anew.

SK: What is your favorite scene in your novel?

AN: I don't know that I can pick a favorite, but I still get a kick out of the scene where Kara finds a letter in her freezer that had been written years earlier by her ex. Maybe it's because this exact incident happened to me, and I always thought there was something depressingly poetic about a breakup letter sitting in a freezer for years.

SK: If you could cowrite a book with any author, who would it be?

AN: Oscar Wilde. But let's be honest, I'd make him write the whole book and take half the credit.

This season has focused on Eddie and Tamra settling into their newlywed life by opening a fitness studio and contemplating whether to have a child together. The couple had a trial run with a mechanical baby doll named Astro and it looks like the duo is just fine with Tamra's kids from a previous marriage and they won't be adding to their brood.

The TV personality will have all of the fun with her grandchild, who is due on Feb. 14, 2015, without having to get up for those midnight feedings and diaper changes.

Congratulations, Ryan and Sarah!
