Cool food jobs (and how to get them)

Food tour guide

Based on Irena Chalmers' Great Food Jobs 2, we've come to the conclusion that there are some amazing food jobs out there. In Chalmers' books, she supplies "ideas and inspiration for your job hunt" as well as the how-to on landing these jobs. The food industry is divided into many sectors: retail, food service, media, design, publicity, history and more. Looking for a dream job starts with figuring out what expertise you need for a specific title. Below we list some of the more popular jobs found in the food industry and tips on how to get them, as well as offer some general inspiration.

Food geographer

This job is all about location, location, location. A food geographer studies traffic patterns, real estate, school zones and current restaurants in an area as a way to advise future restaurateurs if opening a new restaurant is feasible. Over 50 percent of restaurants close in less than two years of their opening, and this is mostly because of poor market research. A food geographer can help a restaurant owner avoid this unfortunate outcome.

Baby food chef

Ever wonder who creates the recipes for all the baby food you feed your little one? Recipe testers and chefs brainstorm flavors, test combinations and ultimately create the products you buy at the store. To create baby food flavors for companies, you must have either a culinary degree, nutrition degree or a food science degree.

Embassy chef

If you're an international student fresh out of culinary school, then Chalmers has a great suggestion specifically for you: Become an embassy chef at your home embassy in the U.S. You'll score an awesome job in which you'll be able to speak your native tongue and cook the food of your homeland.

Food tour guide

Whether you're from a big city like Boston, New York or Austin or from a small town in Delaware or Wisconsin, people will always be interested in discovering new eateries in new places. Chat with local vendors, and set up an official "map" for what the tour would look like so you can give your guests the best experience in your town or city.

Food historian

If you're a lover of all things history, then becoming a food historian might be the perfect job for you. You'll need a history degree and experience, so stopping by your local museum could be a way to start. Chris Kimball showcases it best in his book, Fannie's Last Supper, in which he re-creates a meal from a 1896 cookbook, using only the appliances and instruments that were available during that time.

Menu writer

Ever notice how once you sit down at a restaurant table and open your menu, your gaze suddenly falls onto a specific appetizer or entree? Think this is coincidence? No! Menu writers have studied and developed different methods of drawing your attention to what dish the restaurant wants to sell more of. Positioning of menu items, size of font and colors all play key roles in menu writing.

How to get them

Whether you choose any of these jobs or create your own based on personal interests, a culinary degree always helps to open doors. Although not essential to landing these jobs, having a culinary education will help you to network with the right people and will definitely open doors to the right places. Sunday dinner: Beef chow mein

Beef chow mein

As with many dishes, chow mein recipes can vary in style and ingredients. For my Sunday dinner version of this recipe for beef chow mein, I used crispy, Hong Kong-style noodles that soften as well as gain a bit of crispiness as they cook.

Beef chow mein

I love the savory sauce and brightly colored vegetables (use your favorites) that combine with stir-fried beef and noodles for this tasty and fun dish. As you cook the noodles, parts will turn golden and crispy while the rest will remain soft — you'll have no problem twirling them. Gather the family around, and enjoy this dish using either forks or chopsticks for a flavorful meal.

Beef chow mein

Beef chow mein recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce, divided
  • 4 tablespoons oyster sauce, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar, divided
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 pound flank steak, cut against the grain into thin strips
  • 6 ounces crispy Hong Kong-style chow mein noodles
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, seeds and membrane removed, cut into thin strips
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/2 cup snow peas, cut in half
  • 1/3 cup shredded carrot
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • 2 green onions, trimmed at both ends, white and green parts diced

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together 1/2 the soy sauce, 1/2 the oyster sauce, 1/2 the sesame oil, 1/2 the sugar and the cornstarch. Mix until smooth and combined.
  2. Add the beef to the bowl, and use your hands to coat it with the mixture. Refrigerate it until ready to use.
  3. Cook the chow mein noodles according to the package directions. Drain, rinse with cold water, drain again, and set them aside.
  4. In another bowl, mix together the remaining soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce, and sugar with the ginger and ground black pepper. Mix until smooth and combined.
  5. Add 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil to a wok or deep pan with high sides over medium-high heat. When hot, add the beef.
  6. Cook the beef for about 3 minutes, turning halfway through cooking. Cook until browned, and then remove the beef and its juices from the pan to a bowl. Set aside.
  7. Clean out the wok or pan, and add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. When hot, add the noodles, and cook for about 1 minute.
  8. Add the reserved soy sauce mixture, the garlic and the green onions. Use tongs to stir and separate the noodles as they cook for about 1 minute, tossing and coating them with the liquid mixture.
  9. Add the vegetables to the noodles, and continue to toss and cook them for another 2 minutes.
  10. Add the beef and its liquid to the pan, and toss all the ingredients so they're combined and the beef is warmed through.
  11. Remove from the heat, and serve immediately.

Toss and enjoy this beef chow main dish.

3 Easy breakfast pizza ideas kids will love

What kid wouldn't want pizza for as many mealtimes as possible? Now you can satisfy your family's love of pizza by making it for breakfast too.

These three easy breakfast pizzas will thrill your kids and provide them with easy-to-help-make, fun morning meal options.

1. Breakfast granola, fruit and cream pizza recipe

53a9a71e5c006c00000501f9

Granola and fruit are breakfast staples, so it makes sense that you can combine them with a cream cheese mixture and puff pastry for a tasty twist to pizza. Use your favorite fruit, and try to match the jam to one of the fruits you use.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 6 tablespoons vanilla yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons cherry jam
  • 1/3 cup granola
  • 1/3 cup pitted cherries, halved
  • 1/3 cup blueberries
  • 1 banana, cut into thin rounds

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven according to the pastry package directions.
  2. Bake the pastry according to the package directions, first crimping the edges like you would for a pie.
  3. As the pastry cooks, it will puff. About halfway through cooking, pull it from the oven, and flatten the dough out to the edges slightly with the back of a large spoon. Continue baking until done.
  4. As the pastry bakes, mix together the cream cheese and vanilla yogurt. Blend until smooth, and refrigerate until ready to use.
  5. Allow the pastry to cool completely. When cooled, spread the cream cheese-yogurt mixture evenly over the pastry, to the edges.
  6. Spread the cherry jam over the cream cheese mixture.
  7. Evenly spread about 1/4 cup of the granola over the jam, followed by the fruit, and then top with the remaining granola.

2. Cheesy sausage and hash brown pizza recipe

Cheesy sausage and hash brown pizza

This classic combo of sausage and hash browns makes the perfect topping to personal-size breakfast pizzas.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 10 ounces frozen hash browns
  • 1/2 pound sausage
  • 1 container 8-count biscuit dough (the large, Grands-style biscuits)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/3 cup salsa to drizzle over the tops (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven according to the biscuit package directions.
  2. Cook the hash browns and the sausage (in separate pans) until done. Using a slotted spoon, remove the sausage from the pan, and set it aside along with the hash browns.
  3. Remove the biscuits from the container, and place 2 dough triangles together to form 1 rectangle. This will be the pizza shell for 1 personal pizza.
  4. Crimp the edges of the dough, and bake according to the package directions. If the dough puffs up while baking, then remove it from the oven, and use the back of a large spoon to carefully press it down slightly, out to the edges. Continue to cook until done.
  5. Equally divide the hash browns, sausage and cheese among the 4 pizzas.
  6. Place the pizzas back into the oven for just a few minutes so the cheese melts.
  7. Remove, and serve with the salsa, if desired.

3. Bacon, egg and avocado pizza recipe

Bacon, egg, and avocado pizza

What could be better than bacon and eggs in the a.m.? Mix things up a bit, and add these standard breakfast items to a pizza along with some avocado. You won't be disappointed in these personal pizzas.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices bacon, cooked until crispy
  • Flour to dust your work surface
  • 2 pounds prepared pizza dough
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and ground black pepper as seasoning
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 4 eggs, each cracked into a small, shallow cup
  • 1 avocado, pit removed, cubed
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven according to the pizza dough directions. Lightly spray 2 baking sheets with the nonstick spray, and set them aside.
  2. Cook your bacon until crispy. Remove it from the pan, and place it onto a plate lined with paper towels. When cool, break up the bacon into pieces, and set it aside.
  3. Lightly flour a clean, flat work surface. Place the dough onto the surface, and divide it into 4 equal-size pieces.
  4. Roll out the dough into thin, round shapes, stretching it as you go to help shape the dough.
  5. Place 2 pizza rounds onto each baking sheet. Brush the top of each with the olive oil, and season with the salt and pepper.
  6. Bake for about 4 minutes so the dough sets slightly. Remove from the oven, and carefully add the cheese and bacon to each pizza.
  7. Carefully tip the egg (1 for each pizza) from the cup onto the center of the pizza.
  8. Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes. Just before the pizzas are finished cooking, add the avocado cubes to the tops. Continue cooking until done.
  9. Remove from the oven, and allow the pizzas to cool slightly before serving.
