Angelina Jolie has crafted her life to be much more than just her career as a performer, and now she is being recognized for her humanitarian work.

The Maleficent actress was officially made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II at the annual Queen's Birthday Honours, according to E! News. Jolie was chosen because of her campaign against sexual violence and against using rape as a weapon of war. Because Jolie is not a British citizen, however, her new title is honorary and she cannot be addressed as Dame.
"To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to," Jolie reportedly said, according to E!. "Working with PVSI (Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative) and and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."
Last July, Jolie used her film In the Land of Blood and Honey in her fight against sexual violence in war zones, and she hoped that the film would get people working toward ending the brutality. "When I started down the road, making this film, I thought only of telling a story and doing my best to try to give a voice to survivors," she said to a Japanese audience. "But today, I am here not only as a director but as a campaigner and a part of a global effort that is growing every day."
This week, Jolie attended the End Sexual Violence in Conflict summit, where she joined 1,200 government ministers and judicial and military officials to highlight the political need to focus on the rape of women and young children as a means of control.
This is not the first time the A-list actress has been honored for her philanthropic efforts. Last fall, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Jolie would be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The award is given "to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry," according to the Academy.
Congratulations, Angelina!
