Angelina Jolie has crafted her life to be much more than just her career as a performer, and now she is being recognized for her humanitarian work.

Angelina Jolie: Nigerian kidnapping an act of "unthinkable cruelty"  >>

The Maleficent actress was officially made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II at the annual Queen's Birthday Honours, according to E! News. Jolie was chosen because of her campaign against sexual violence and against using rape as a weapon of war. Because Jolie is not a British citizen, however, her new title is honorary and she cannot be addressed as Dame.

"To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to," Jolie reportedly said, according to E!. "Working with PVSI (Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative) and and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."

Last July, Jolie used her film In the Land of Blood and Honey in her fight against sexual violence in war zones, and she hoped that the film would get people working toward ending the brutality. "When I started down the road, making this film, I thought only of telling a story and doing my best to try to give a voice to survivors," she said to a Japanese audience. "But today, I am here not only as a director but as a campaigner and a part of a global effort that is growing every day."

This week, Jolie attended the End Sexual Violence in Conflict summit, where she joined 1,200 government ministers and judicial and military officials to highlight the political need to focus on the rape of women and young children as a means of control.

This is not the first time the A-list actress has been honored for her philanthropic efforts. Last fall, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Jolie would be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The award is given "to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry," according to the Academy.

Congratulations, Angelina!

Aaron Rodgers finally opens up about girlfriend Olivia Munn

Aaron Rodgers has always been a very private person, but he's finally learning that his life in the spotlight means he has to reveal some things. The Green Bay Packers quarterback is dating Newsroom actress Olivia Munn, and he opened up about their relationship and how he has changed since first getting his big break in football.

9 Things you didn't know about Aaron Rodgers >>

Rodgers spoke with ESPN Wisconsin and was asked if he was bothered that a photo of him and Munn kissing was shared online.

"No," he said. "For one, I'm real happy in my relationship. And I understand what comes with it. And two, the last couple years, I've learned a lot about perspective and what's important. And that you cannot, when you've had success individually and collectively as a team and you are highlighted for the things you've done on the field and off the field, you cannot hide from the spotlight."

Rodgers plays in a smaller city of barely 100,000 people and is rarely seen out in public. It sounds like he has (very recently) has learned that his role of successful NFL quarterback comes with some requirements.

"I think it's a process for me. I think it really took a while for me — and you still work through it — to get to a comfort level with that. But finally, you say, 'You know what? It comes with the territory.' It's not what I signed up for. I signed up to play football, because I love it and have as long as I can remember," Rodgers explained. "This is what I always wanted to do. You don't realize what all comes with it at times, but I think on some level, you have to embrace that."

Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers visits David Letterman >>

Munn has yet to talk about the relationship, but Vogue recently asked her to define "love." She said, "What is love? Ha, that's a huge, loaded question that I do not know the answer to. So if you find out, please DM me and let me know."

Xbox users are not happy with Aaron Paul's new commercial

Aaron Paul has inadvertently made an enemy of Xbox users everywhere — but only by agreeing to be in the Xbox commercial. The ad features the actor in what is supposed to be his home, playing his Xbox.

VIDEO: Aaron Paul helps out with wedding proposal >>

Simple enough, right?

But the Breaking Bad star is showing one of the gaming console's features — the voice recognition sensor — and it's triggering machines all over the world.

As the commercial starts, Paul says "Xbox, on," to show how to turn your machine on with only the sound of your voice. But as he says it, gamers who have an Xbox at home are seeing their own Xboxes turn on — triggered by the sound of Paul's voice.

"Aaron Paul just turned my Xbox One via the Xbox advert. (Which triggered the IR blaster to switch my TV off)," explained one user, according to the BBC.

"@Xbox your new TV advert is annoying the h*** outta me. Aaron Paul keeps turning my console on… #stooooop," another user wrote.

Although there are plenty of complaints about the commercial, the Xbox users seem more amused than thoroughly upset by the glitch. Users can also turn off the sensor, but it then means they won't be able to turn on their machines with their own voices.

20 Sappiest celebrity love tweets >>

A spokesman told the BBC that they had no comment. Paul, who is pretty active on social media, hasn't yet commented on the issue, either, but he did respond to a tweet by Xbox talking about the new commercial.

You can see Paul next in his new film Hellion, in theaters June 13. He will also be appearing in the Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul.

Jason Biggs makes fun of Tara Reid's body, keeps feud fresh

Jason Biggs made a recent appearance on Joan Rivers' web show In Bed With Joan to promote the new season of his series Orange is the New Black. After hearing some of Biggs' body-shaming of his former American Pie co-star Tara Reid, maybe the latest installment of Rivers' show should be titled Jason is the New Joan.

Tara Reid gets a much-needed career boost >>

While on the show, Biggs was asked who he would kill between Reid and Lindsay Lohan, according to Us Magazine. "Lindsay Lohan stays. She's got nice boobs," he said. "She really does. Lindsay's got nice boobs. Tara's body, I don't know what's going on with it. I don't think she even knows what's going on with it."

"And Lindsay does?" Rivers asked. "Lindsay doesn't know what's going on with Tara's body, either. No one knows what's going on with Tara's body," Biggs shot back.

Biggs also bashed Reid last October while he was on an episode of Watch What Happens Live, calling the Sharknado actress a "hot mess." Reid did not take to kindly to the insult and tweeted her sadness to Biggs. He brushed off the comment and tweeted, "I love you Tara, it was a joke! Didn't meant to offend, Totally kidding around! it was a game! Xoxoxo."

If you're going to do some on-air body bashing, Joan Rivers is the one to do it with, because she will most likely join right in. In March, the head of the Fashion Police made some disparaging remarks about Lena Dunham's body while she was on the Howard Stern Show. "Lena Dunham, who I think is, again, terrific... how can she wear dresses above the knee?" Rivers said to Stern. "You're sending a message out to people saying it's OK, stay fat, get diabetes, lose your finger." Rivers has also previously referred to Dunham as "little fat chick."

Biggs has garnered a reputation for not having a filter, and this is the second time in less than a month that he has come under fire for making a comment in poor taste. In May, Biggs sent out a series of tweets while he was watching The Bachelorette. The Saving Silverman actor threw in some jabs mocking Eric Hill, who was a contestant earlier in the season. Hill died about two months ago in a paragliding accident in Utah.

The Interview: Seth Rogen and James Franco finally say "I love you"

It's no secret that James Franco and Seth Rogen have a hot bromance going. They star in movies together, they make parody videos together, and Franco recently made headlines with an impressive set of nude paintings of Rogen.

Their newest film, The Interview, is a testament to this friendship — even going so far as showing the two confessing their man-love for one another at the end of the trailer. Of course we know they're "acting" in the trailer, but judging from their history together, we're pretty sure they really mean it.

In the film, Rogen and Franco play TV personalities who score an interview with No. 1 fan Kim Jong-Un, dictator of North Korea. The CIA then recruits the men to assassinate Kim, which presents a host of challenges, since they are obviously the two least qualified assassins on the planet.

In celebration of Franco and Rogen's most recent collaboration, we decided to look back over the duo's 15-year friendship and show you where it all began...

Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000)

The short-lived NBC series Freaks and Geeks introduced us to a host of awesome young talent, Jason Segel and Busy Phillips included. It was a cult hit, and although it was cancelled after just one season, it seems to have been in production long enough to kindle a bromance between Rogen and Franco. Just look at Rogen's baby cheeks and signature muttonchops in the GIF below. He and Franco had an easy comfort on screen even then. We can only wonder if executive producer Judd Apatow knew then what he was starting.

Knocked Up (2007)

Although they didn't share screen time, Rogen and Franco reunited with Apatow on the 2007 hit Knocked Up, no doubt planting the seed for their following collaboration. Rogen plays an inadvertent dad-to-be opposite Katherine Heigl, who does an interview scene with Franco.

Pineapple Express (2008)

In this buddy comedy penned by Rogen (story by Apatow), Franco and Rogen play stoner buddies on the run from a drug lord. This was the first film featuring the two as co-stars, and it whet audiences' whistles for more. Much more.

This Is the End (2013)

Although Rogen and Franco were insanely raunchy, audiences couldn't get enough of them in this dude-ishly ridiculous apocalypse flick, directed by Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg.

"Bound 3" (2014)

Do you remember where you were when you first watched the Rogen/Franco interpretation of Kimye's "Bound 2" video? We were glued to our desks, heads exploding. "Bound 3" is everything the original isn't — and we love it.

Seth in the Nude (2014)

We thought we'd seen it all with that motorcycle make-out session, but Franco and Rogen managed to shock us all over again with these nude paintings by Franco. According to an interview with Today, Franco explained that he painted the pieces in response to another artist who he claims appropriated Rogen's image in a bid for attention. Whatever the reason, none of us will ever be able to get the images out of our mind. Thanks, James... thanks so much.

The Interview (2014)

We can't stop laughing at this trailer. Rogen and Franco's finely tuned chemistry is obviously out in full force for this flick, and the results are side-splitting. No word yet on how long we'll have to wait for their next project together. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy a peek at The Interview, which opens in theaters in October.

Kerry Washington on work, life as a new mom — and Fitz

Kerry Washington, new mom and gorgeous Scandal actress, is dodging questions about her personal life with a sense of tact even her character, Olivia Pope, would have to admire.

A Twitter fan recently contacted her through a live chat to ask, "Now that you're a mom will it be bittersweet to go back to work?" The star, who gave birth to daughter Isabelle Amarachi in April, replied kindly, "So tricky because you know I don't talk about this stuff, but I will say I feel really, really blessed."

She added, "I just feel really blessed that I'm kind of living extraordinary dreams come true in my work life and in my personal life."

Mommy tweets: Kerry Washington's baby girl and more from celebrity moms >>

That's about all we're likely to get from the very private actress, but there is more she's willing to say on the topic of work.

Speaking of the character she embodies for the fabulous Shonda Rhimes, Washington explained, "There's no question about it, that she loves Fitz... but I think she's also just trying to turn her life into a place that is not so upside-down. To create a healthy life for herself, where she can not feel like she's stuck in a relationship with someone who can't be with her. It's a very, very complicated relationship, and I think she's trying to find more simplicity and healthy expressions of love and safety and sanity around her."

Which powerful TV career woman are you? >>

That's not all. Elaborating further on the love triangle between fictional President Fitzgerald Grant and Jake Ballard, Washington continued chattily, "It's tricky. Jake is a great guy, and Jake cares about her a lot and loves her. Neither man has treated her entirely well, so it's tricky."

What do you think is in store for Kerry Washington and Olivia Pope?

Challenge: make plans with someone you haven't seen in a while

Starbucks Discoveries | Sheknows.com

Why? Friends are the chocolate chips in the cookie of life. They boost self-confidence, reduce stress and help you out in good times and bad. It can take some effort to nurture friendships, but the payoff is more than worth it.

Megan: It’s nice to reconnect with old friends. It’s even better when you're able to do it over an afternoon full of Starbucks Discoveries Caffè Mocha. Between the two of us, my friend Kristy and I have two toddlers and a newborn. That means drinks are usually slurped down and meals are often inhaled in a whirlwind of ketchup and meatballs. Not today. Today Kristy and I made time to find everyday inspiration in a tall, cold glass of Starbucks Discoveries Caffè Mocha and to talk about something other than cartoons and crayons. We had a delicious mommy time of our own.

Patrice and friend | Sheknows.com

Patrice: My challenge this week was to meet with a friend I haven't seen in a while. Immediately I thought of my friend Tameka. Tameka is that friend who is the opposite of judgmental. I can tell her anything and she'll listen and laugh and/or sympathize with me. She is a great confidante. Such a necessary friend. Even though she doesn't live far from me, life doesn't allow us to see each other often. I texted her, told her my challenge and that I wanted to see her. She enthusiastically accepted. Fast-forward to the weekend: We spent the day drinking beer, driving around Philly looking for Girls Auto Clinic shop locations and trying out new bars. We talked about love, family, love, work and love. Ask me in 20 years to blog about our Saturday adventures again. It will be just as great.

Chaton: I had a baby about seven weeks ago and have been isolated to the point of not answering my telephone. I know that the callers are well-intentioned. However, the calls are often an unpleasant interruption to breastfeeding, diaper changing or sleeping. So, I have turned off the ringer on my house phone, put my cell phone on vibrate and unconsciously ignored phone calls, much to the annoyance of my friends and family.

As much as I have enjoyed hibernating with my baby, I recognize that family and friends want to visit. I am also getting the urge to engage in some adult conversation. So, I was excited to finally agree to have a friend come over to see the baby. Despite resisting the visit for over a month, it was exactly what I needed. She and I were able to catch up while she held the baby and I got a bit of a break. It went so well, I questioned why I had resisted in the first place. However, after she left, I returned comfortably to my place on the couch, hypnotized by my baby.

Surprise Details | Sheknows.com

This Laundry by Shelli Segal hat is business on top, party on the bottom. A plain old straw hat gets way more exciting when the underside is decorated with oversized black polka dots. But we promise you can still wear it 24/7. (Nordstrom, $48)

Cosmopolitan stripes

Cosmopolitan Stripes | Sheknows.com

Leave it to Kate Spade to create a wide-brimmed hat worth of a city slicker. If you're more of a Holly Golightly than a beachside Brigitte Bardot, this striped number is for you — timeless Givenchy gown sold separately. (Neiman Marcus, $78)

'70s flair

'70s Flair | Sheknows.com

A truly floppy straw hat, like this black and yellow striped one from Topshop, was meant to be worn with an eyelet tank top and platform sandals. Perfect for Woodstock or, you know, a rooftop barbecue. This is 2014, after all. (Topshop, $50)

Lavender fedora

You don't need to stick with neutral colors for hats. This lavender fedora adds some pastel charm to any outfit without making you look like an Easter egg. Charming, no? (ASOS.com, $29)

Embroidered

Jonathan Adler's embroidered straw hats add nautical appeal to the basic straw hat. My personal favorite is the anchor. Throw it on and you're all set for a totally glam sailing trip. (Nordstrom, $88)

Scarf trim

Scarf Trim | Sheknows.com

Inject a sense of whimsy onto an oversized straw hat with a colorful, patterned scarf band like the one on this Genie by Eugenia Kim Panama hat. Coachella may be over, but this hat certainly has a place at any other outdoor music festival you'd possibly want to attend. (Urban Outfitters, $88)

Sequined glamour

Sequined Glamour | Sheknows.com

Sequins for summer? Yes, please! This River Island hat may be headless like a glorified visor, but it packs a high-powered, fashionable punch. You could wear only a towel and still be the most put-together woman lounging poolside — but you should probably wear at least a swimsuit. (ASOS.com, $30)

Solid black

Solid Black | Sheknows.com

If you're not that enthused about patterns or the color of straw, why not choose a solid black hat like the Stevie Wool Hat from NastyGal? Instant edge added to any little floral frock. (NastyGal, $30)

Ethereal bow

Let a big, wispy bow on your hat do the accessorizing for you. You won't need much else by way of outfit flair if you're wearing this floppy bow hat by Oasis (no, not the band). Just add some wing-tipped eyeliner and your favorite pair of Daisy Dukes. (ASOS.com, $38)

Justin Bieber is sweating one less criminal charge today. The singer will not face felony charges in an attempted robbery investigation that saw him accused of snatching a woman's cell phone after he thought she was trying to take photos of him.

District Attorney spokesperson Jane Robinson told E! News that the court declined to file felony charges due to lack of evidence. No security footage of the alleged crime was available, all nine employees of the miniature golf and batting cage park in Sherman Oaks, California, where the victim said the incident took place, said they saw nothing, and Bieber's legal team refused to allow him to be interviewed by the police.

However, the DA has referred the case to the city attorney's office to consider misdemeanor charges instead.

Bieber tweeted about the incident after the story hit the tabloids, when he was seemingly exonerated by TMZ.

Does it really matter if being gay is a choice?

Photo credit: Justin Sullivan/Staff/Getty Images News/Getty Images

Nothing makes me roll my eyes faster than the phrase "homosexuality gene." While I am certainly curious as to whether or not such a gene exists, I am not interested in hearing this phrase used in a discussion about gay rights. Why? Because, first of all, homosexuals are not lab rats or mysterious creatures that must be observed and studied in order for other people to understand them. And secondly, because it really shouldn't matter if a person is "inclined" to be homosexual or not — especially when it comes to gay rights.

Before going further, let me say this: I am not a lesbian. I like men. I like them tall. I like them handsome and strong and preferably with dark hair and blue eyes. That's my "type," you could safely say. Sure, I think other women are beautiful. In fact, I often find myself envious of features other women have that I personally lack — maybe they're taller than me, prettier, skinnier, or they have a nicer smile — but in no way am I attracted to them sexually. I "desire" men. Whether or not I'm genetically programmed to desire men instead of women, I don't know; I desire men, regardless. End of story.

I'm also an imaginative person, and when it comes to the topic of gay rights, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to be in a gay man's or a lesbian's position. How would it feel to have actual laws dictating who I could or couldn't marry? How might I react if someone told me that being attracted to men was an "inclination" that I should learn to overcome? I have come to the conclusion that, if roles were reversed, I too would find this to be unfair. Furthermore, I would not change who I am — genetically programmed or not — to accommodate others who simply have different coding or preferences than I do. Why should I? I like men, and nothing anyone says is going to change that. I'm just not attracted to women. And guess what? Gay men are not attracted to women, either. Lesbians are not attracted to men. Nothing anyone says will ever change that. So, why are we complicating things with all of this talk about genes and inclinations when it doesn't even matter?

We're using the wrong language, and it's sending the wrong message. Homosexuality is not a disease. It isn't something that needs to be cured or restrained or overcome. It is a preference — just like dark-haired, blue-eyed men are a preference of mine. And if I wouldn't give up my own preferences just to be culturally accepted, then how could it ever be OK for me to ask someone else to give up theirs? Share this article if you agree.

It's baby No. 2 for Jenna Fischer and her husband, Lee Kirk, who welcomed a daughter on May 25. The couple announced the birth to E! News on Friday.

The joyous parents said, "We are pleased to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Marie Kirk. Born May 25, 2014. The family is doing great. We are happy, healthy and sleepy."

The Office predictions: Where will they be 10 years from now? >>

Baby Harper joins big brother Weston Lee, 2 1/2, in the growing family. The former Office star and her husband tied the knot back in 2010.

The sleep-deprived parents also shared a photo of their new baby girl with the entertainment site. She is shown wearing a cute pink bodysuit with brown hearts and swaddled in a white blanket. Harper even peacefully sleeps through the photographic moment.

Fischer confirmed that she was expecting back in February. She spent much of her pregnancy nesting, even if it wasn't just for the baby.

The Office's Jenna Fischer defends keeping on the baby weight >>

In April, she said to E! News, "The nursery is not done and there's no name picked out and I'm close! I've been nesting like crazy, but I've been doing things that are sort of zany, like, I became obsessed with cleaning my basement. You'd think I'm putting the baby down there. I'm not! But it's very clean and organized."

Even with an organized house, Fischer was a bit nervous about adding one more kid to the mix.

She told People magazine, "Everyone's telling me one plus one does not equal two. One plus one feels like four."

Welcome to the world, baby Harper!

She's been waiting for this moment for so long, and now, Kelly Clarkson is a mom. On Saturday, the American Idol Season 1 winner announced the big news on Twitter to her fans.

Husband Brandon Blackstock is already a dad to two kids, Savannah, 11, and Seth, 7, from his first marriage. Clarkson announced her pregnancy only a month after she tied the knot with her music manager husband, after rumors started to heat up that she might be pregnant with her first child.

The "Miss Independent" singer suffered from morning sickness throughout the early parts of her pregnancy, but she knew all along she was having a girl.

She joked to People early in her pregnancy, "I'm totally gonna have a girl. I'm manifesting it! And when I have a girl, you're gonna be like, 'That chick knew it!'"

Indeed she did. Clarkson revealed that she was having a girl in January with a funny tweet: "I knew it! Only a girl could cause this much drama with all this vomiting ha!"

Kelly Clarkson says she bumps & grinds just like Beyoncé >>

Despite being so vocal at the beginning stages of her pregnancy, Clarkson stayed out of the spotlight for the last two trimesters. She made a rare appearance in public on Easter Sunday in Nashville, Tennessee, but she otherwise kept a light work schedule.

Congratulations, Kelly and Brandon!

Salem sneak peek: What's in that vial, Mary?

Increase Mather is continuing his rampage against the supernatural this week on Salem, and he's putting everyone on edge. This time, though, Increase is determined that Mr. Sibley is under a spell and not sick. He refuses to let Mr. Sibley go home and demands he stay in his care. His actions and concerns force Mary to go from passively worrying to aggressively working to make sure Increase doesn't find out just what she's done to her husband — or worse, find out who has done it.

Yum! 4 Smokin' Salem hotties >>

Since Mr. Sibley removed that crazy frog, it's only a matter of time before he regains his composure enough to expose Mary for the witch that she is. Her only way to stop him? Find a way to keep her hold on him... or kill him. In this week's sneak peek, we can't help but wonder what exactly is in that "tonic" she's giving to poor Isaac. Sure, she says it's to "help" Mr. Sibley, but are we sure it won't really just help her?

We have a greater worry, though: What happens if that "tonic" really is poison? If Isaac is the one seen administering it to Mr. Sibley, will he be tried for murder? Will they claim he's a witch? Isaac isn't exactly stable-minded, either. How will murdering someone affect him mentally?

Heathens rejoice: Salem is renewed >>

Of all the possible outcomes to this first season of the show, it's Isaac's life that worries us most. We absolutely adore the Fornicator and would hate to see him hang. Yet we continue to feel like his life is in the balance! We can't imagine a Season 2 without Isaac.

Will he make it past this episode? Can he make it into Salem Season 2? It sure seems like whatever is in that vial from Mary might end up being the deciding factor. And the end result may just surprise you. Tune in Sunday at 10/9c on WGNAmerica to see how it all goes down.

Challenge: consume a story

Why? If reading means scanning your friends' latest Facebook updates, it's time to treat your brain to something better. Reading enriches your knowledge and vocabulary and can help improve your memory, writing, concentration and analytical thinking skills.

Raina: I haven't read a book in its entirety in over seven years. I was not even sure I was going to for this challenge, but catching an unexpected cold and being stuck in bed for two days actually gave me the gift of time. I decided to reread one of my favorite books, and oh how I found myself lost in its pages. I was laughing and giddy and I took that feeling into my relationships that day. Something wonderful happened by reading a book. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the pastime.

Katie: Inspired by George Ella Lyon's poem Where I'm From, I reflect on my roots and compile memories to share with my kids.

I am from wooden stick horses, from Tang orange drink and Captain Crunch.
I am from the screened porch house, floors tiled by dad's hands, with a lake breeze.
I am from the formal living room used for holidays, lovers of New York and Vermont.
From a hypochondriac and self-made outdoorsman.
I'm from the Jersey Shore, bagels and Wawa.
From summers with Long Island grandparents, beading, and Häagen Dazs.

Raspberry lemon sorbet bowls

I could easily rationalize going out for ice cream every single night in the summer. After hibernating for almost six months this past winter, I want to get in every frozen treat possible. My wallet, however (ice cream got expensive!), doesn't really appreciate the indulgence as much. (Neither do my hips.)

Raspberry lemon sorbet bowls

Sorbet is one of the easiest frozen treats to make at home. No egg bases or milk required; just fruit, water and sugar. Scooping it into frozen lemon bowls makes the homemade experience a bit more fun, so you can save the trip to the ice cream place for next time.

Raspberry-lemon sorbet in lemon bowls recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 4 lemons, tops sliced off and hollowed out with a spoon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 cups raspberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

Directions:

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the sugar and water to a boil. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then turn off the heat, and let it cool.
  2. Add the sugar water, raspberries and lemon juice to a blender, and blend until smooth.
  3. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker, and churn according to your ice cream maker's directions. Transfer the mixture, which should be the consistency of soft serve, to a freezer-safe container, and freeze until firm.
  4. Place the hollowed lemons in the freezer along with the sorbet.
  5. When ready to serve, scoop the sorbet into the frozen lemons.

Raw zucchini, apple and walnut salad with pomegranate dressing recipe

When summer comes along, I don't stay in the kitchen much. That means less cooking and more fresh ingredients. Since we tend to eat lighter during the warmer months, salads are our best bet. Who wants to eat a big roast when it's so hot out? And besides, don't we all want to fit into that new swimsuit? I know I do, so let's move on to healthier dishes this summer.

Raw zucchini, apple and walnut salad with pomegranate dressing recipe

Serves 2

Ingredients:

For the dressing

  • 1/4 cup pomegranate juice (taken from 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the salad

  • 2 zucchini
  • 1 apple
  • Juice from 1 freshly squeezed lemon
  • Walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. In a small jar with a cover, mix together the pomegranate juice, vinegar, olive oil, honey, salt and pepper. Shake well, and then set it aside.
  2. Using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife, slice the zucchini thinly.
  3. Slice the apples thinly, and then immediately soak them in the lemon juice. Drain the apples and discard the lemon juice when ready to serve.
  4. On a serving plate, mix the zucchini, apples, walnuts and pomegranate seeds with the pomegranate dressing. Garnish with fresh mint if using, and sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste.

Grilled maple-chipotle chicken kabobs

Get a few napkins handy, because it's about to get saucy. This Sunday dinner recipe for grilled maple-chipotle chicken kebabs has a little sweet and a little more spicy going on.

Grilled maple-chipotle chicken kabobs

Keep the ingredients for this recipe handy to use for grilled chicken all summer long. When I grill kebabs, I like to cook the chicken and the veggies on separate skewers since the veggies cook faster than the chicken does.

Grilled maple-chipotle chicken kabobs

You’ll love the barbecue sauce that covers the chicken, which is super simple to make. If you prefer less heat, then cut back on the adobo sauce. Now grab a napkin, and get ready to enjoy your meal.

Grilled maple-chipotle chicken kebabs recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 3 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, plus about 1 tablespoon sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 6 tablespoons ketchup
  • 6 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1-1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken, cut into 3 x 3-inch cubes
  • Optional: 2 bell peppers, seeds and membrane removed, cut into 3 x 3-inch squares
  • Optional: 2 small zucchini, ends removed, cut into 1-inch-thick rounds
  • Olive oil to brush over the vegetables
  • Salt and ground black pepper to season the vegetables

Directions:

  1. To make the sauce, place the first 8 ingredients in a food processor, and blend until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Lightly oil your grill grate. Set the grill to medium-high heat.
  3. Add the chicken cubes to skewers, leaving the slightest amount of space between each cube.
  4. If you are grilling the vegetables, then place them on skewers separate from the chicken, brush them with olive oil, and season them with salt and pepper.
  5. Add the chicken skewers and the vegetable skewers to the grill. Cook the vegetables, turning them often, for about 8 minutes total. Remove them from the heat, and cover them with foil to keep them warm.
  6. Cook the chicken for about 12 to 15 minutes total, turning twice while it cooks. Toward the end of the cooking time, brush the sauce over the chicken, coating it all over.
  7. Allow the chicken to cook for a few minutes. Flip the skewers, brush them with more sauce, and cook for a few more minutes. Do this 1 to 2 more times.
  8. When the chicken is done, remove it from the heat.
  9. Remove the chicken and the vegetables from their skewers, place them on a platter, and serve them warm.

Serve your chicken, sauced.

Casey Kasem died Sunday morning in a California hospital, according to his daughter. The radio legend was 82.

Judge orders food, fluids to be withheld from Casey Kasem >>

Kasem was born Kemal Amin Kasem in Detroit in 1932, and he began his radio career in Flint, Michigan. In 1952, he moved on to become an announcer on the Armed Forces Korea Network. According to ABC News, Kasem continued to work in radio across the country for the next two decades before he finally launched the brand that would make him famous — American Top 40 — in 1970. He hosted the show until 1988, then changed the format and relaunched it as Casey's Top 40 until 1998. In 2004, American Top 40 was handed over to Ryan Seacrest.

Kasem has four children. He married his second wife, Jean, in 1980.

"Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars," Kasem said as he signed off from each show.

He later explained the sign-off to the New York Times, saying, "I just didn't want to say goodbye. Every station I was at, I never said goodbye. I don't know why."

Kasem was also the voice of Shaggy on Scooby-Doo, among many other voice roles.

Casey Kasem hospitalized after wife throws raw meat >>

The radio host's health has been declining for years. Last year, his daughter Kerri announced he was suffering from dementia. The diagnosis started a bitter battle among his family members for the right to decide his well-being. Three of his children claimed Casey's wife Jean was not allowing access to their father. Daughter Julie attempted to gain conservatorship in 2013 but was denied. After Jean took Casey out of state, a judge granted daughter Kerri the rights to take care of her father.

On Wednesday, a judge ordered food and medicine to be withheld from Casey on the advice of the hospital.

Grilled Brussels sprouts salad

Grilled brussels sprouts salad

I am seriously in love with summer — the good weather, pool days and, most of all, the grilling that takes place with close family and friends. I've been using the grill at least three to four times a week if not more.

A couple of summers ago, I experienced grilled romaine lettuce leaves for the first time and fell head over heels for them. This summer I'm making grilled Brussels sprouts with a quick homemade dressing.

Fire up the grill, and let's get cooking.

Grilled Brussels sprouts salad recipe

Serves 2-4

Ingredients:

  • 13 ounces Brussels sprouts, quartered
  • 3 romaine lettuce leaves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cranberries
  • 3 slices baked bacon, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Juice from 1/2 an orange

Directions:

  1. Preheat the grill to 300 degrees F, and set a grill basket on the grates.
  2. Chop up the Brussels sprouts, and place them in the grill basket. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Cook for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, and then add the lettuce leaves. Cook for an additional minute, and then remove from the grill.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the 1/4 cup of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and orange juice. Pour the mixture on top of the lettuce leaves.
  4. Top with cranberries, bacon and Parmesan cheese, and enjoy.
