The Black Keys get pessimistic on "Turn Blue"

0
0

The Black Keys aren't exactly known for being upbeat. (If you've been to their hometown of Akron, Ohio, you understand why.) They're mellow dudes with an affinity for bluesy rock, which is just the way we like them. When they first inched into the music scene with The Big Come Up in 2002, it was that sound that set them apart from the rest of the mix. It wasn't until Rubber Factory, released two years later, that The Black Keys saw time on the Billboard charts and four years after that, with Attack & Release, that the band broke into the top 20. It wasn't exactly a quick rise to fame, but a steady progression to becoming one of America's most standout rock bands.

The Black Keys release "Fever" ahead of their new album >>

If their previous two records are any indication, their upcoming album, Turn Blue, will be the one that lands The Black Keys at the top. 2010's Brothers peaked at No. 3 while their last album, El Camino, debuted in the second spot. With nowhere to go but up, we'd be shocked if Turn Blue didn't debut in first place. Their newest single and the album's namesake is certainly good enough for the job.

Over the twang of electric guitar and a sauntering bass line, lead singer Dan Auerbach unleashes a warning in his perfectly mesmerizing falsetto. "I really don't think you know / there could be Hell below." Much like their first single, "Fever," this track is hypnotizing, but for very different reasons. Auerbach's warning heeds the kind of attention one might stop and give a screaming street-corner preacher proselytizing about the end of times. There is Hell below, isn't there? Tell us more, Dan. Tell us everything you know.

That time Patrick Carney and Justin Bieber got into a spat >>

Like with all things made by The Black Keys, "Turn Blue" will grab you by the collar and pull you in, igniting the creation-old dilemma of fight vs. flight. So do we heed Auerbach's advice and turn back from the Hell below... or fight our way through it?

Maybe Turn Blue will give us more insight into what Auerbach and Carney chose. We'll find out on May 13.

VIDEO: Emma Stone sings in throwback reality show clips

Although we all know Emma Stone as a bona fide star from mega-hits, like The Help and The Amazing Spider-Man, the red-haired beauty once had her sights set on reality television as her path to fame.

Ten years ago, the now-25-year-old woman we and Andrew Garfield love dearly took part in VH1's In Search of the Partridge Family competition, and video of her rocking a pair of hits has turned up.

Emma Stone gushes about her relationship with Andrew Garfield >>

"You go in there rolling your eyes, thinking, 'This is just a reality search competition,' but then you're there for seven weeks, and you just really, really want to win," Emma Stone, who formerly went by Emily Stone, told Vogue in her May cover story about her competitive streak kicking in.

Check out the Spice Girls super-fan taking her turn at the mic here, singing Pat Benatar's "We Belong," and Meredith Brooks' "Bitch."

VIDEO: Emma Stone geeks out over a fellow celebrity >>

Impressed by Stone's singing? VH1 was, too, and young "Emily" won herself a gig as a member of the recreated Partridge family. Sadly, however, The New Partridge Family show was never picked up by any networks.

Bonus fun fact: There was already a listing for an "Emily Stone" when the young star registered for the Screen Actors Guild, so she chose "Emma" as her stage name. Nonetheless, her family and friends call her Emily.

Do you think Emma Stone should pursue a music career also?

5 Tasty moments from True Blood's Season 7 trailer

0
0

We're eating up every second of this newly released promo trailer for True Blood Season 7, the series' final season. It looks like the season will begin right in the heart of the action and carry us through until the end. Here are five moments that make us want to put the teaser trailer on repeat.

1. Sookie's haunting narration

Sookie (Anna Paquin) takes us through the state of the town in the 35-second teaser. Her sweet, Southern-accented voice doesn't seem so innocent when she's describing the vampire takeover and government abandonment we're being prepped for in Season 7. She sounds downright hopeless, which really sets the mood.

Top 10 things we want on True Blood's season finale >>

2. Maxine Fortenberry goes for the gun

She's always been off her rocker, but the second the vamps attack and that woman is, of course, wielding a pistol. That image of her in the promo will singe itself onto your brain because it clearly spells trouble. Nothing good can come of that woman aiming a weapon at anyone or anything, even a crazed vampire.

3. The "sick vampires" chomp down on Bon Temps

It's vampires meets zombie apocalypse all in the small town of Bon Temps that we've come to know and love. It looks like the town will hardly be making it out of this season unscathed. As Sookie says in the promo, "There's no one left." Will it be Bill or Eric to the rescue? Perhaps Sookie will have to save herself this time around.

Alexander Skarsgård to return to True Blood Season 7 >>

4. "Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen."

Poor Andy has been through quite the storm of bad news bears. It looks like things won't be getting brighter for this sheriff as his town is attacked by crazed bloodsuckers. That dropped, terrified expression will be making its comeback in Season 7 just the way we like it. Hopefully, this time around, he'll continue to fight the good fight. It looks like Andy, Sookie and the rest of Bon Temps will form quite the rat pack.

5. Femme fatale with stakes

Who is that sexy, spike-toothed lady wielding those stakes of glory? Any guesses? The teaser trailer doesn't focus on her long enough to get a clear picture, but we can't wait to find out. Hello, Blade flashback. We think she might be Jason's new girlfriend Violet. We're looking forward to seeing some good vampire showdowns. Some spicy action is definitely in store for the final season.

True Blood Season 7 premieres June 22 on HBO.

Olivia Wilde gushes about the perks of pregnancy to Lucky magazine

Olivia Wilde is certainly enjoying her pregnancy with her first child, a baby boy, with fiancé Jason Sudeikis. In fact, the Tron: Legacy actress is loving her baby bump so much that she has claimed it makes her feel like she's a goddess.

The brunette beauty graces the cover of the May 2014 issue of Lucky magazine, and she was only too thrilled to gush about her pregnancy and how much she is enjoying the changes in her body.

Olivia Wilde's selfless journey in Haiti changed her life >>

"I just thought, oh I'm going to hide this forever. But I ended up getting kind of excited to show the bump, as a badge of pride, like, 'I'm a woman! Look at me making a human! I am a goddess!'" Wilde told the magazine.

And the 30-year-old actress' baby bump is not the only thing she is loving about being pregnant.

"I'm like, double D, hello!" she joked about her growing breasts. "I've never been in this section of the bra store! I've been flat-chested my whole life, so it's a wonderful new world."

How Olivia Wilde got Jason Sudeikis to go out with her >>

So, apart from the body changes, what other perks have there been during Wilde's pregnancy?

"Pregnancy brings you into this sort of commune — you feel connected to women in a way that you never have," Wilde explained. And she's feeling just as connected to her unborn son. "He's moving around in there and no one else can tell — it's a little secret friendship," she tenderly exclaimed.

Congratulations to the mom-to-be!

Professional photographer wants to make over your dating profile

John Ha photography

"Most people aren't comfortable on camera, hence the characteristic deer in the headlights expression when a lens is pointed at them: eyes wide open, blank expression, mouth open at times," says John. "The expression that they're making comes from the emotion that they feel, which is fear."

It's scary to put yourself out there, so John has made it his goal to get to the essence of a person and portray that in the photos. But, these aren't your typical glamour shots. John goes out of his way to make his professional photos seem like everyday snaps.

Model behavior

As a professional photographer, John noticed how models used special expressions to make their faces look good on camera. Tyra Banks has described this expression as "smizeing," smiling with your eyes.

"I use my experience as a commercial photographer to light and pose women, using the best tools and techniques available, to make advertisement-quality imagery," says John. "After all, dating is all about advertising yourself in the best manner possible."

And to top it off, he coaches the women on what elements in their profile they should change to land a man. "One simple mistake is to open your profile up to as wide a group of men as possible," says John. "I think each woman is special and rare, so I help her craft her profile to reflect that." As marketing professionals know, people want things that are rare and hard to get. John tries to help his clients market themselves with the same methods.

John Ha photography

"Recently I worked with a successful business owner who really enjoyed playing tennis and was also a devout Catholic, but her profile was generic," says John. "One thing that struck me was that she was really funny in person, but you wouldn't be able to tell from her profile. After we made her photos, including a set on the tennis court, I helped her re-write her dating profile."

So, how does this whole life-changing process actually work?

A session with John lasts all day. "Before our shoot day, I have a pre-interview session with my clients where I discover who they are at their essence," says John. On the actual day of the shoot he sets up a Tyra Banks-worthy photo shoot with hair and makeup, wardrobe, up to two hours of studio coaching and another hour on location depending on the concepts.

John then reviews the photos and has a profile review, and either rewrites or outlines a new dating profile. The package is $1,500 plus the cost of the hair and makeup artist, but finding the man of your dreams is priceless. Right?

What about the guys?

Many single women complain that men are putting in little effort to the same online dating process… and John agrees. "Mostly, the modern man is to blame," he says. "Too often they are emotionally stunted or overly cocky or humorless or just plain have no idea how to flirt or talk to a woman."

While this might be a generalization, what is known is that John has a strictly female clientele and men don't seem to be as hung up on the look and feel of their dating profiles. "People often ask me to offer my service to the other half, and I would be open to that," says John. "But men often have fragile egos and don't want to be told how to be better at anything. Women are much more open and receptive to improvement."

How to calm allergies with local honey

The Hype versus The truth

Popular knowledge asserts that eating local honey is a natural remedy for seasonal allergies. But what does science say?

The hype about local honey

If you ask a group of people about natural remedies for seasonal allergies, you'll likely hear one or two assertions that eating locally-sourced honey can reduce allergy symptoms. The thinking is that bees infuse local allergens into the honey produced in their hives. When people ingest this honey, the pollen serves as a type of antidote or "vaccine" against problematic local allergens, thus reducing symptoms.

This is a pretty substantial claim, and many people swear by eating local honey for their allergy symptoms. But we're curious: What does the research really say?

Separating the hype from the facts

Interestingly, science doesn't exactly support the hype about local honey as an allergy antidote. According to United Allergy Services, the amount of pollen in honey is negligible and does not provide consumers with measurable relief from their symptoms. In fact, research studies indicate that there is no symptom difference between consumers who eat local honey, commercially-produced honey or a placebo.

Essentially, this means that all the people who swear by local honey for their seasonal allergy symptoms are probably just experiencing a placebo effect.

Why honey is good for your hair >>

Reasonable expectations

Thankfully, you don't have to despair by tossing your raw or local honey. Honey may not directly reduce your seasonal allergy symptoms, but it can boost your overall health so you'll be less prone to the infections and illnesses that mimic and exacerbate allergies. According to Dr. Rallie McAllister, science actually supports the following benefits of local honey:

  • Honey boosts the antioxidants in your bloodstream. In one study, people who consumed honey for 30 days were compared to a group of people who didn't consume honey. The honey consumers experienced a marked increase in bloodstream antioxidants, which is linked to a reduction in disease.
  • Honey reduces oxidative stress. Free radicals damage the human body at the cellular level, and free radicals are often produced by oxidative stress. People who consume honey experience a reduction in oxidative stress, which can prevent chronic conditions.
  • Honey reduces inflammation. When applied to the skin, honey can reduce inflammation and promote healing. Whether you have a wound or an allergic skin reaction, applying honey directly to the affected area will help it heal faster.

Why honey is good for the skin >>

You can feel good about adding local honey to your daily routine to improve your overall health. While it may not directly reduce your seasonal allergy symptoms, local honey will absolutely make you feel better and less prone to the illnesses and inflammation that can make allergies worse.

Terry Richardson under fire after model's sex allegations

Terry Richardson finds himself in hot water over a sexual text

Terry Richardson, world-class photographer to the stars, has caused a stir after he allegedly propositioned a model for sex in exchange for a shoot in the prestigious fashion magazine Vogue.

According to Us Weekly, a model named Emma Appleton took to Twitter and Instagram on Sunday to share a screenshot of a Facebook private message that was allegedly sent from Richardson. The message read, "If I can f*** you I will book you in [New York] for a shoot for Vogue."

Sarah Michelle Gellar blasts Kim K's Vogue cover >>

Charming! Of course, a representative for Richardson has denied the allegations and has called the screenshot that the British model uploaded "a fake."

After the backlash Appleton faced over the text, she deleted the post and tweeted, "Beginning to wish I hadn't posted that. It doesn't matter who you are or what the industry is, just be a decent human being… The fact people think this is acceptable blows my f***ing mind."

While the message has been questioned for its authenticity, according to Us Weekly, this is not the first time Richardson's sexual nature has come under fire. The 48-year-old photographer has previously left both his ex-girlfriend Audrey Gelman and Girls star Lena Dunham to admit they had regrets about shooting with him.

And according to the New York Daily News, Richardson also previously came under fire from model Jamie Peck, who claimed the photographer stripped naked and asked her to perform a sex act in 2010.

And now Vogue magazine has decided to distance itself, too. According to Us Weekly, Vogue told the publication via a statement that the magazine has no plans to work with the photographer despite what the message may have suggested.

Vogue won't exploit underage girls anymore >>

"The last assignment Terry Richardson had for US Vogue appeared in the July 2010 issue and we have no plans to work with him in the future," the statement read.

Despite Vogue having "no plans" to work with Richardson in the future and the fact that this is not the photographer's first sexual misconduct scandal, he remains in high demand and has already shot with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Rihanna, Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus.

Is this breed right for you?

City-dwelling owners looking for a quiet and independent sidekick should consider this breed. The Basenji is a loyal breed that will stick beside its human counterpart, yet it thrives on being self-sufficient and holds a mind of its own. Neat freaks will love this self-cleaning, low-shedding and hypoallergenic breed. Due to its aloof nature, a large amount of time during the early years should be dedicated to training and socialization.

A dream day-in-the-life:

A Basenji’s ideal day is marked in ink with its own personal agenda. Depending on the mood, it could spend the day cuddling on your lap, tirelessly playing with toys or simply scoping out potential mayhem on the premises, as long as it’s on its terms. This breed is not a fan of sharing the attention, and a day at the dog park would best be spent playing independently.

Couch potatoes steer clear of this energetic and athletic breed. Bred to excel in all land, sea and air athletics, the German Shorthaired Pointer requires rigorous daily exercise and then some. Due to its hyperactivity levels, this breed is recommended for families with older children who can keep up with an active lifestyle. This pup requires little maintenance in the grooming department, but if you're not tolerant of shedding, this breed is not for you.

A dream day-in-the-life

A day filled with activities of any sort will keep this energetic pup happy and healthy. Running, dock jumping, playing fetch, herding and more encompass a perfect day for the German Shorthaired Pointer. Give it a daily job like herding farm animals or take it as your hunting partner, and this pooch will be in doggy heaven. Nothing would make this active dog frown more than sitting on a couch in a small apartment all day, so non-active households should steer clear of this sporting breed.

Kate Upton is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, and many, many men would love to get the chance to date the Victoria's Secret model. But Upton has admitted she's had her heart broken more than once in the past.

The blond beauty has just starred in her first Hollywood film The Other Woman alongside co-stars Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann. The forthcoming comedy film is about three woman who are all being cheated on by the same man and how they plot their revenge. Upton has admitted that the film's story is actually not too far off from her real life.

"I definitely have been cheated on. Everybody's been through betrayal some way or another in their life. You're heartbroken and you have to heal that," Upton told The Mirror.

So has the 21-year-old star done anything outrageous to get revenge on her ex-lovers?

"I personally think the best revenge is just walking away and not wasting another second of your time with someone who's clearly emotionally handicapped. I think if someone hurts you in that way, it's not your job to change him, and it's not your job to be there while he's finding himself, and finding who he is."

"So I think walking away and being who you need to be for the rest of your life is the most important thing," Upton wisely revealed to the publication.

The Other Woman is Upton's film debut, so how did she find the change of career, and what was it like working on the set?

"I've learned so much from this movie. I've never really been on a set before. I'd never done it before. I took lessons for two years, but that's not the same thing at all," the model said.

"I learned so much from Cameron and Leslie. I'm sure anybody who's been in a room with them sees just how open they are and amazing they are, and I got to know them on a personal level."

And hopefully, this is not the last film that we'll see Upton in either!

With so much drama in the NBC, it's kinda hard being… Brian Williams? But somehow, some way he keeps coming up with funky-a** s*** like every single day.

The NBC News anchor "rapped" another hit last night on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon — this time Snoop Dogg's 1994 hit "Gin and Juice." And it is spectacular.

A few of Williams' NBC co-stars popped up in the "Gin and Juice" video, including Natalie Morales, Richard Engel and Lester Holt — but, as Williams joked, "I had reservations about Lester. It's because of his flow."

Fallon's team of video wizards have also had Williams doing Sugar Hill Gang's 1979 classic "Rapper's Delight," N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" and even another Snoop song, "Nuthin' but A 'G' Thang." So what hip-hop classic should our Man Candy Mondays honoree conquer next? He has a few ideas.

"I would like some pride of authorship," he told Fallon. "What about some early, pre-hearing loss Foxy Brown? What about some — any Luda would be great!"

Make root beer floats better — turn them into cupcakes

How can a root beer float get any better? Cupcakes!

If you like root beer floats, you'll love these root beer float cupcakes. I find heavy-duty glass mugs for $1 or less at my local thrift shop and keep them in the cupboard just for this purpose. The generously portioned cupcakes are baked right in the mugs, making assembly incredibly simple.

You have a couple of options for cake flavors with these cupcakes. The first is to use a chocolate cake mix, which will give you a nice dark color for the "root beer" cupcake. While I find that I like the convenience of the color, the flavor of the chocolate can overpower the flavor of the root beer.

If you really want your root beer float cupcakes to taste like root beer, I suggest using a plain white cake mix and adding brown icing color.

To make the cupcakes, start by measuring out 1-1/2 cups of root beer.

Stir the root beer into your cake mix, and add brown food coloring if you like. You also have the option of adding a teaspoon of root beer extract, which will really boost the flavor of your cupcakes.

Scoop the batter into your mugs. I prefer filling them to just under half full.

Carefully place your mugs on the bottom rack of your oven, and bake them for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees F.

When your cupcakes are done, let them cool before frosting them. Once they're cool, use a paper towel to wipe off any cake residue on the inside glass above the cupcake.

To frost, simply snip off the corner tip of plastic baggie filled with vanilla frosting. Spiral the frosting on top of your cupcake, just like a lovely drizzling of vanilla soft serve.

Insert a straw, and you've got some adorable baked root beer floats to fool your kids with.
