Here Comes the Boom movie review: Kevin James doing MMA?

$

This uplifting movie is about a high school teacher who risks life and limb in a fighting cage to help his students keep their music program. Kudos to Kevin James for taking on such a physically demanding role.

Here Comes the Boom

2.5 stars — Perfect for those who love a happy ending

Scott Voss is a slacker high school biology teacher who doesn't care about much besides hitting on the school nurse, Bella . Then when he happens upon the student orchestra playing music, his heart softens.

The music teacher, Marty , loves his students and even spends his spare time fixing up old instruments from garage sales for students who can't afford them. He tells the class the quote of the day: Without music, life would be a mistake. When Scott tells Marty how he's inspired him, Marty asks some biological questions. Why is Marty curious about biology? Turns out his wife is pregnant at age 48.

Soon, the teachers are called to a meeting where the school administration announces that due to budget cuts, the music program is no more — which also means Marty is out of job with a baby on the way. All the teachers are frustrated, but Scott becomes determined to earn the $48,000 it will take the keep the music program running and keep Marty employed. But how?

Here Comes the Boom

That's when Scott gets into mixed martial arts. He wrestled in high school and thinks that with the help of a former fighter, he can at least make some money losing matches.

For his first fight, he shows up to the cage in a dopey Viking outfit. He doesn't last long and ends up vomiting on his opponent.

Someone videotapes the barfing incident, and once it goes viral, the students see it and begin to view Scott as a hero.

Here Comes the Boom

Eventually, Scott gets offered to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Las Vegas, where he's certain to lose. But a little inspiration can go a long way — just ask Rocky.

Bottom line: I've seen Kevin James be a lot funnier and the plot is predictable, but Here Comes the Boom is a heartwarming story about following your dreams.

3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom movie review: Un-brotherly love

$

Mega-hottie Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy stars in this quirky, indie film. But don't expect to see him clad in leather, riding a motorcycle. Here, he plays the nice guy — mostly.

3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom

Frankie hates his older brother Bruce , with a passion. It's easy to feel Frankie's pain — Bruce is a grade-A douchebag who spent his entire childhood torturing Frankie on videotape. Now adults, Bruce is newly sober and still pursuing his dream to be film director. His "short film" is on YouTube and still a sore spot for Frankie, considering that the video was of an embarrassing event at his wedding.

No longer married, Frankie runs into a drunk girl named Lassie , who has troubles of her own. Frankie brings Lassie back to his parents' house, where she climbs on top of him, desperately trying to get him to have sex with her . But the situation is too sudden and too awkward for Frankie to "perform."

3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom

Turns out, Frankie's brother Bruce still takes pleasure in videotaping Frankie's failings and has captured the entire mortifying event on video. Frankie is angry, of course, but the situation goes from bad to worse when Bruce gives the DVD to an ex-drug-addict actor friend of his named Jack . Frankie and Bruce's world is turned on its head, however, when they discover Lassie is Jack's daughter.

Jack has a temper and gun, causing both Frankie and Bruce to try to get the DVD back before Jack can watch it. Through a series of unfortunate mishaps, the DVD is distributed to various people and outlets, causing the brothers to chase after it.

3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom

The funniest scenes are when Bruce attempts to get help from his ex-cell mate Phil , who's had an elaborate sex-change operation and now goes by Phyllis. Hunnam and Perlman play wicked foes in the TV drama Sons of Anarchy, so it's a lot of fun to see them together in a wacky comedy.

Bottom line: There are an awful lot of coincidences in the story, making the situations feel artificial, but the characters are kooky and fun. And Charlie Hunnum is hot.

How to... bun it up using a sock

If you're crunched for time and your hair is a mess, no need to fuss -- put your hair in a bun! By using a sock you can create this look simply and neatly. Here's the how-to for your new favorite lazy-day hairstyle.

What you'll need

  • hairbrush
  • sock
  • smoothing serum
  • hair tie
  • bobby pins

Step 1: Brush it out

Brush out your hair to get rid of any tangles or bumps. Brushing your hair will make it easier to put your hair into a high ponytail.

Step 2: Smooth flyaways

To create a clean and polished look, take some smoothing serum, rub it between your fingers and run your fingers through your hair. Smoothing serum will make your hair look vibrant and healthy, with the added benefit of nourishing your hair.

Step 3: Place hair into a ponytail

Using your hair tie, place your hair into a high ponytail. The ponytail should rest at the crown of your head.

Step 4: Prepare the sock

Using an old clean sock of medium length, cut off the toe area. This leaves a cloth tube.

Step 5: Roll into a donut

Roll back the sock into a doughnut shape. Make sure that the doughnut is relatively even the whole way around. This will make your bun look much neater.

Step 6: Sock it through

Bring your ponytail through the donut and slide your hair around the circumference of the sock until it's fully covered. Make sure to use more smoothing serum if you observe more flyaways.

Step 7: Secure the bun

Secure the bun by placing a hair tie around the outside of the bun. Use hair ties that are similar to your hair color so they don't distract from the hairstyle.

Step 8: Twist it out

For a fun flair on a regular bun, twist the remaining hair around the sock. This creates a look that is both chic and unique.

Step 9: Put it together

Once the remainder of your hair is twisted around the bun, secure it with bobby pins and add hairspray. The hairspray will help the bobby pins keep your hear neat and intact. Voila -- a perfect sock bun.

don't break the bank

Halloween is the one day a year that you can dress as over-the-top as you want, so you might as well milk it! Wear the wig, those sky-high heels and mounds of face paint and makeup. Find out where to get the best deals on expensive, extravagant Halloween costumes.

Wigging out

Finding decent deals on extravagant costumes can be tough, but now that online shopping has become common, it's a bit easier to find the deals on these excessively expensive outfits. SpookShop.com is offering deals on extravagant wigs ranging from $10 to $30. The wigs come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Another wig- selling store that has branches in most cities is Party City. Party City is selling their premium wigs for $25 to $50, with an extra 20 percent off if your purchase is $60 or more. Hairstyles can really make or break an outfit, so if you're looking to make a statement, grab a wig this Halloween.

Tons of variety

Costume Cauldron is an online costume store that has just about every costume imaginable for any person in the family. It provides adult, teen, kids, toddler, infant and pet costumes, at a good value for the quality; prices vary depending on the type of outfit purchased. They're offering up to 50 percent off on select items and free shipping on orders more than $75. If you're looking to buy unique costumes for the family this year, be sure to check out this website.

Daring and bold

If you want to be a little daring this Halloween, Frederick’s of Hollywood has you covered -- er, not so covered. While these outfits may seem a little pricey, you're definitely getting your money’s worth in terms of quality -- not to mention from the number of heads you'll be turning. These sexy costumes do show some skin, but look at it as one last night to show off before you're bundled up in scarves for the rest of the fall and winter. Frederick’s is offering 25 percent off the entire store and free shipping on orders more than $50.

Paint it up

Snazaroo, a water-based product, is a safe, easy face paint that takes away worry over breakouts or clogging pores. If your costume could use something exaggerated to seal the look, Snazaroo face paint is the perfect way to go. Depending on the size of the face painting kit, prices can range from $4 to $50. The kits are sold at local stores such as Walgreens, as well as online sites like Overstock and eBay.

Creating a casual luxury home

What is casual luxury anyway? How does it apply to everyday living? How does one learn to embrace the esthetic of casual luxury? All great questions — and the answers are simple and easier than you think.
Mars Jennings

make the most of your space

What is casual luxury anyway? How does it apply to everyday living? How does one learn to embrace the esthetic of casual luxury? All great questions — and the answers are simple and easier than you think.

The basic premise begins with rethinking, repurposing and redesigning: Focus on attainability, have fun and get inspired by the endless resources available.

Life on Mars book coverThat said, my home, Rosebrook Gardens, in Westport, Connecticut, is a snapshot of my soul. One visit will reveal to you a deep part of who I am. Truth be told, my affair with my surroundings began early in life by moving Disney prints and posters around my bedroom. Soon the posters were replaced with framed reproductions of master paintings and art prints. As I fine-tuned my design taste, I became wiser and more in tune with comfort and beauty, thus discovering my "casual luxury" home design esthetic. Back then I simply referred to this style as "cheap and chic." But I soon realized it was so much more, a way of life that embraces resources and creativity while maximizing space.

No matter where I live, I always begin my design by focusing on what I love about the space. What you cherish should manifest itself in many places: the windows, the fireplace mantel, the floors, the high ceilings, the wood moldings, the openness and natural light. Once you identify what you love, it's time to maximize the beauty. For example, I love my divided-light windows. So rather than cover them, I dared to go bare! I painted the trim in an oil base high-gloss white. The results allow me to enjoy the details of the windows while admiring the views of the garden, regardless of the time of year. It's the best of both worlds!

Table
Garden sign
Dining room

Here are my five principles of "casual luxury" design:

1

Texture, texture, texture!

You do not need multiple colors to create a professionally designed look: A monochromatic theme can be beautifully stepped up with a variety of textures for a more luxurious professional look — smooth, rough, wooden, metallic, woven, opaque, sheer.

2

Choose shades that reflect your overall feeling

For example, cool colors are perfect for minimal designs with great natural lighting. Warm colors are great for traditional designs or antiques. Want a dramatic space? Darker colors add it but can overwhelm a space if done to an extreme. For impact without overwhelming the room, consider using a neutral shade overall combined with a bold accent wall.

3

Something old becomes something new

Flea markets, tag sales and grandmother's attic are excellent resources for treasures that have sentimentality and history. This is a must in the design of any room, as you can't complete a casual luxury room with new stuff alone! Accessories such as candles, books and trays can be used for added decoration.

4

Create height

This is important as height brings your eye to new levels. This is simple to accomplish if you follow four rules of layering:

  • Flooring — Hardwood, carpet or an area rug? I prefer the combination of hardwood floors with an area rug. If you have connecting rooms, the carpets should match for a harmonious transition. Two different carpets will break the cohesiveness of the space thus disrupting the color palette.
  • Seating — I love furniture, and seating is important in any room. Less is more and oversized pieces can come back to haunt you. Better to go with classic, timeless pieces with interesting lines.
  • Wall hangings — Anything you put on the wall should be at eye level unless you are dealing with the space over a fireplace mantel or accent art, which you can stack for drama.
  • Crown molding — Crown molding is an added detail that increases the value of your home and provides a beautiful finishing touch.
5

Create reflection

Reflection creates light, light creates energy, and energy creates a special ambiance in any room. A silver trophy filled with candy, a mirror placed off-center, a glass tabletop — all these reflect light beautifully. Apothecary jars are a must-have for any room. Fill them with moss balls, shells or even birch branches. These vessels reflect light while allowing you to capture tidbits of nature for all to enjoy.

Here's one final note

Learn what you like in regard to colors, textures and styles. Although your taste may change over the years, your core likes and dislikes will not. Once you hone in on the basic elements of your own casual luxury esthetic, building and matching your style is easy. Your casual luxury designs are within you.

And there you have it.

Hot in audio: The Jewels of Paradise by Donna Leon

Each month Candace of Beth Fish Reads recommends the best in audiobooks, the perfect way to read when you're on the move. Cassandra Campbell's expressive narration creates the perfect atmosphere for Donna Leon's first stand-alone mystery.

Jewels of Paradise

Caterina Pellegrini, an opera scholar, works as a teacher in Manchester, England. Although she is making a go of it, she misses her native Venice, and thus it's no surprise that she eagerly accepts the first opportunity to return home.

Her new job turns out to be quite strange, however. She is to witness the opening of two trunks that have remained locked since the early 1700s. They are believed to have belonged to a once-famous baroque composer who died childless almost 300 years ago. But Agostino Steffani was not just a composer; he also was a political ambassador and a bishop in the Catholic church with ties to powerful people throughout Europe.

In modern times, two of Steffani's descendants are quarreling over ownership of the trunks, and Caterina is to help settle the dispute. As she begins to research the composer's life, she uncovers a centuries-old mystery involving murder, betrayal, and a rumored treasure of jewels. The deeper Caterina digs into the tangled web of the bishop's life, the more she suspects she is being followed and that her own life may be in danger.

Veteran mystery author Donna Leon is widely known for her Guido Brunetti series, which also takes place in Venice. The Jewels of Paradise is her first stand-alone mystery, and in it she introduces her fans to a new heroine, Caterina Pellegrini.

Although Caterina is a bit of a loner, she relishes life in her city, and Leon doesn't skimp on the details of the sights and sounds of Venice. It's easy to picture Caterina grabbing a bit to eat, listening to music, walking the streets, and conducting research in ancient buildings. Classical music lovers will be fascinated by Leon's attention to historical fact, and everyone will come away with a greater appreciation for the Baroque period.

The Jewels of Paradise is an intriguing mystery that spans 300 years of Venetian history.

Right from the start of the audiobook, listeners are tuned in to the setting of The Jewels of Paradise, thanks to narrator Cassandra Campbell's ability to slip smoothly into a near-flawless Italian accent when pronouncing names and places.

The mood and drama of the story are enhanced by Campbell's expressive reading, which keeps a firm hold on listeners' attention. Modulating her volume and tempo, Campbell captures Caterina's prickliness and impatience with some of the people in her life as well as her excitement when discovering clues and her fear of being followed. Campbell's solid performance makes The Jewels of Paradise our audiobook recommendation for October.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Christina Aguilera and Elle Fanning

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Christina Aguilera and Elle Fanning's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera

The look Christina Aguilera chose to announce the American Music Awards seems inspired by My Little Pony. Her multicolored mane goes from bleached blonde to lavender to hot pink. Ombre tips are one thing but having three different colors in your hair is out of control, girl. Not even Katy Perry attempts tri-colored tresses!

Xtina also made sure she matched her rainbow hair to her dress and makeup, too, sporting bright purple eyeshadow and hot pink lipstick. When you have crazy colored hair happening, your makeup should be simple. Say it with us: Less is more.

Then there's her dress. It's great that Christina is comfortable with her curves, but would it kill her to let them breathe a bit? Skintight doesn't always equal sexy. And patterned shoes?! Just say no.

The final verdict? Sorry Christina, but we don't want to taste the rainbow. You looked great when you met Hillary Clinton last week. You should probably just dress like you're going to hang with Hil every day.

Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning

We thought the youngest Fanning sis was headed to Thanksgiving dinner in this Pilgrim-esque ensemble, but she's actually attending the Chanel Fine Jewelry 80th anniversary party in NYC. Now Elle is totally adorable, but she needs some styling help stat.

We usually love all things Chanel, but this dress by the label is a miss, particularly for someone as young and fresh as Elle. The velvet dress is far too frumpy for a 14-year-old! The hat isn't helping things either.

Then again, we have to give her props for being invited to a couture party and being dressed by the designer to boot. She clearly has the coolest teenager life ever!

The final verdict? Elle should save this dress for Turkey Day or use it as a Halloween costume, but we do love her fresh-faced glow and side braid.

Tonight's Dinner: Steak fajitas recipe

Mexican restaurants are usually known for their tacos, tostadas, tamales and fajitas. But who says you have to go to a Mexican restaurant to indulge in these yummy treats? Most are just as easy to make at home, and you won't break the bank.

steak fajita

Tacos are one of my favorite Mexican dishes. They're easy to make and always a big hit. Another favorite is fajitas. I've never made them at home though because they always seemed tough to cook. I mean, whenever you order fajitas at a restaurant they come out on a sizzling skillet with green peppers, onions and swimming in a wonderful array of spices. I can't do anything like that at home. Thankfully Parenting magazine assuaged my fears and showed me fajitas are just as easy to make at home as tacos, especially if you have a grill or grill pan.

Steak fajitas

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 8 tortillas
  • 1 pound flank steak
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cilantro stalks chopped
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 cup guacamole
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Preheat the grill to 450 degrees F.
  3. Sprinkle the steak with salt and pepper and grill until charred on the outside, about five minutes per side for medium rare. Lay steak on a cutting board, tent with foil and let sit for 10 minutes.
  4. Wrap the tortillas in aluminum foil and warm in the oven for 10 minutes.
  5. While the tortillas warm, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the pepper and onions and cook, stirring, for three minutes.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, add the cilantro roots and cook, covered, for four more minutes or until the vegetables are tender. Transfer the cooked vegetables to a large bowl and set aside.
  7. Place the beans, salsa and guacamole in separate bowls on a table.
  8. Slice the steak into thin strips. Sprinkle with lime juice, salt and pepper and add strips to the bell pepper mixture. Toss to coat. Serve with the warmed tortillas, beans, salsa and guacamole.

How to choose an adult Halloween costume for your body type

$
0
0
Trick or treat! It's that time of the year again, and that means it's time to start picking a Halloween costume. Women come in all shapes and sizes, and picking the right costume can be difficult. However, the next time you check out the costume store or decide to start creating your costume, think about these tips to flatter your figure.
1

Hourglass

Officer Lauren police costume

Hourglass figures have similar bust and hip measurements and a waist that is usually 10 inches smaller than their bust/hip measurements.

The hourglass shape is curvy so it's important to avoid clothes that look loose or frumpy. Similarly, avoid pants with baggy bottoms, as they take away from your curvy figure. Play up those curves by picking a costume that showcases your bust and uses a wrap style around the waist. This Officer Lauren police costume works great for hourglass figures because its tight fit accentuates curves and the black belt brings focus to a narrow waist. To lengthen your torso, choose light colors for the top and dark for the bottom. Be sure to wear a supportive bra to ensure comfort.

2

Pear

Rosie the Riveter costume

Pear-shaped bodies are the most common body type for women. Pear shapes are characterized by the hip and butt measurements being larger than the shoulder measurements. Many times, pear figures have a smaller bust line.

With pear figures it's important to bring the attention upward. Embellish around the neck or wear a headband to bring focus to the upper part of your body. This Rosie the Riveter costume or try a jean button up shirt with pair of dark-wash wide-hemmed jeans to keep pear figures visually balanced. Pear figures are curvy as well, so be sure to avoid frumpy clothing and embroidery; stay away from frilly skirts as they bring too much attention to your hips.

3

Apple

Vixen Vamp

Apple figures have a broad shoulders, a large bust, narrow hips, a flat butt and an undefined waist. With apple-shaped bodies, it's important to draw attention away from the waist and to define balance.

Elongate your torso by wearing something with a V-neck cut, and add a belt to the torso for slimming definition. Keep your costume monochromatic if possible because it will lengthen and slim your torso. Check out this Vixen Vamp costume -- its V-neck is flattering and its high-low hem adds shape to your bottom. Stay away from tight or tapered bottoms because they will create a straight-line effect and take away shape from your figure.

4

Rectangle-shaped

Pirate costume

Rectangle-shaped bodies are characterized by bust, hip and shoulder measurements that are similar. Rectangular builds are usually tall and are known for their long and lean figures.

The most important thing a costume can do for rectangle-shaped bodies is to create curves. Scoop-neck and sweetheart cuts create shape and add definition. Belted waists, collars and ruffles also add shape and dimension to a rectangle figure. Try this pretty pirate costume, with a scoop neck, ruffles and a corseted waist -- perfect for long and lean figures. Make sure to wear a supportive bra, as it will help add more shape to your bust.

5

Wedge

Native American costume

Wedge-shaped figures -- also called inverted triangle figures -- are characterized by a broad upper body and waist and hip measurements that are proportionally smaller than their shoulders.

To even up your body proportions, draw the eye downward, bringing the focus to the torso and hips. Stay away from strappy styles, as they will bring too much attention to your shoulders. Wear a wide belt on your hips or try something that's high-waisted. Don't be afraid to wear bright-colored bottoms, as they will draw the eye toward the lower half of your body. This Pocahontas costume is perfect because it incorporates a belt, and the cut draws the eye downward. The one-shoulder cut is also flattering because it does not bring too much attention to the shoulders.

Whatever your body type, make sure to flaunt what you've got and to have a happy and safe Halloween!

5 Tips for Baby's first Halloween: Fun, not frightful

$

We all agree that there is nothing more adorable than an infant or toddler dressed up for their first Halloween. But Halloween can easily be an overwhelming holiday for the littlest trick-or-treaters.

baby's-first-halloween

1

Go low-key on the costume

Yes, those elaborate costumes with a million different pieces are to die for and are sure to make you smile, but when it comes down to it, you're probably going to spend the entire holiday pleading with your little one to keep it all on. For Halloween first-timers, the simpler, the better! Consider using one show-stopper costume piece, such as some cute kitty ears, that go with her normal clothes, like leggings and a long sleeve T-shirt. Add some drawn-on whiskers and you're good to go.

Check out these 7 adorable Halloween costumes for babies >>

2

Keep your expectations in check

No matter how you decide to celebrate your child's first Halloween — from simple activities to die-hard family coordinated costumes and parties galore — just remember that things may not go the way you've envisioned and that's OK!

It's possible that your little pumpkin will refuse to put on his or her costume or will fall asleep right before heading out to trick-or-treat. Make the best of it by taking pictures whenever they will wear their costume and by reminding yourself that a couple years from now, they'll be thrilled about Halloween.

3

Think of trick-or-treating alternatives

Traditional trick-or-treating isn't necessarily the best option for the littlest witches and wizards. If your kids haven't been tipped off about trick-or-treating yet, consider skipping it all together and replace it with costumed trips to harvest festivals in your area or visits to family members' homes to show off their costume. For families with both older and younger children, have the little ones hit a few homes on your block before Mom or Dad take out the older kids to canvas the neighborhood.

4

If you do trick-or-treat, go early

If you can't have Halloween without trick-or-treating, research options for younger kids. Many cities are now doing early evening trick-or-treating sessions in their business districts or malls. For families who live in neighborhoods with a lot of young children, organize your neighbors for a trick-or-treating event that caters to the little ones — even a morning trick-or-treating session with other families who are home during the day could be fun!

Sometimes, little ones get the biggest kick out of Halloween by handing out candy at the door to other trick-or-treaters! They can wear their costume if they want to or you can put them in some cute Halloween pajamas and station them at the front door to dish out the treats.

Some tips for making this a success: Beware of super scary costumed kids that may come to the door by keeping your eyes out for kids that are coming up your walkway. Also, when you're ready for bedtime, shut off your front porch lights so that trick-or-treaters will get the hint.

Halloween themed weddings: Dos and don’ts for your spooky nuptials

Letting your imagination run wild is easy to do when planning a Halloween-themed wedding. From the decadent centerpieces to Halloween-inspired menus to deciding if you want to dress in costume, there are all kinds of fun and exciting decisions to be made. However, you don’t want to get too out of control with this kind of theme. For a Halloween-themed wedding, you want a fun, yet still sophisticated, luxurious and classy feel, which can be tricky to pull off.

Fall wedding

Decor

Halloween weddings are risky, and when it comes down to it, you don’t want your wedding day to be remembered as scary, creepy, or worst of all, tacky. When it comes to wedding decor, I find it best to stay away from over the top, traditional decorations such as skeletons, ghosts and fake plastic spiders. Instead, opt for more creative and subtle Halloween decor. There are many ways to incorporate Halloween into your wedding and still achieve a classy feel.

Centerpieces

For centerpieces, wrap different-sized pumpkins in gold and white Organza ribbon to create a “mummy-look” and surround with floating candles in Mason jars. Candles will always add to the ambiance of the wedding and add a romantic touch. In order to spice up the place card table, create an elegant board that says ‘Trick or Treat’ and have small black velvet pouches attached with string saying everyone’s name and table number. Inside the pouches can be different gifts such as small candies or lottery tickets.

candelabraColor

The color scheme for a Halloween-themed wedding is a given; however, don’t just go for your typical black and bright orange colors. Instead, incorporate twists of gold, amber, white and other neutral colors into your wedding decor. To add a subtle Halloween feel, use an elegant, black satin table cloth and hang crystal chandeliers adorned with orange roses, creating a luxurious setting.

Candy

It’s not Halloween without candy. The most important step in planning your Halloween wedding would be to provide your guests with a candy buffet -- the ultimate Halloween wedding essential. Put out your favorite candy bars for your guests to enjoy, but add in some gourmet chocolates or salted caramels to add a little bit of luxury. You can also set up jars full of candy with coordinating colors on a bed of dark colored rose petals to make the candy stand out and look more decorative. Opt for a traditional wedding cake, but make it spooky with a white, spider-webbed pattern along one side.

Food

When it comes to planning a Halloween-inspired menu or fancy Halloween cocktails, there are all sorts of crazy concoctions to stir up. You can get really creative and even scare your guests a bit just by simply coming up with spooky names for the dishes being served. If gourmet food is your desire, serve pumpkin ravioli or simply incorporate black and orange hued foods within your dishes. Don’t just serve your typical cocktails at a Halloween-themed wedding. For festive drinks, serve Bloody Mary’s, a spiced rum apple cider or incorporate blood orange juice into your cocktails. You can also provide fun little Halloween stirrers to mix your cocktails.

Costumes

Do not go too over the top and have your guests dress in costume for the reception. If you would like to incorporate costumes into your wedding, go for something classy and elegant like a masquerade afterwards. You can also set up cute stations for the guests such as a fortune teller or have a butler at the exit handing out party favor bags filled with candy. Last but not least, do not bring Halloween music to the dance floor -- stick to songs your guests will know and like. Remember, a Halloween-themed wedding is a chance to show off your creative side, but you don’t want to get too carried away.

Take a trip to Northern Georgia

Recently, I went to Helen, Georgia, for a family reunion. I was pleasantly surprised with all there was to see and do in the town. It's both kid- and adult-friendly, providing fun for all ages both day and night.

Here are six, fun-filled activities you won't want to miss if you're heading to northern Georgia. These may even be reason enough to plan a vacation there this fall.

Hiking

Surrounded by lush trees and vast mountains, the area provides some of the best hiking the U.S. has to offer. In particular, Anna Ruby Falls is a half-mile paved hike that leads to two gorgeous waterfalls. If you're up for the challenge or kid-free, there's a 4.6 mile hike that leads to the same falls. Fresh air, gorgeous scenery and loads of fun and activities are what make Helen a number-one stop for tourists and families alike.

Zip-lining

Zip-lining is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those who seek thrill and adventure. North Georgia Canopy Tours offers multiple zip-lining tours where you zip over ponds and rivers, walk on sky bridges, rappel and go on nature walks. Priced as low as $69 per person for three hours of entertainment, this is not something you want to skip out on.

Oktoberfest in Helen, GA
Oktoberfest in Helen, Georgia

Miniature golfing and sightseeing

After a crazy day of zip-lining, it's nice to unwind in the small town of Helen, also known as "Little Switzerland," with shopping and dining. While the buildings may make it look like a Swiss town, Helen has a true German culture feel with its cobblestone alleys and old-world towers. It's a main stop for tourists and is quite busy in the fall, even offering its own version of Oktoberfest during September, October and November. There are two miniature golf parks in the center of the town with old-fashioned ice cream parlors inside that make for a great evening treat.

Whitewater rafting

Whitewater rafting is an adventure for the whole family. Northern Georgia offers multiple rivers with multiple "levels" of rafting. If you have kids or are looking for a calm ride, the Chattooga River Section III is where you'll find an abundance of wildlife and be able to take in the beautiful scenery. Chattooga River Section IV, though, is where your heart will be racing, and you'll be on the edge of your seat the entire ride. Both trips are $75 and last at least six hours. The choice is yours!

Tubing

Helen is surrounded by smaller rivers and streams, as well. Throughout the town are multiple areas to begin tubing down one of these rivers. Georgia's Cool River Tubing Company charges just $5 for a tube and provides a minimum of a two-hour float. Relax, unwind and soak in the views as you peacefully float down the Chattahoochee River.

Rent a boat

Though it's true you can rent a boat most places, Georgia is by far one of the best. The water is smooth and the scenery is enchanting. Whether you're looking to relax and rejuvenate or get your adventure on by skiing and wakeboarding, the Georgia lakes are for you. Wakeboard boat rentals are $400 for the day; jet skis are $300 and pontoons, for the partyers, are $200 per day.

Keep them fresh & handy

With so many incredible recipes to try, chances are you have collected an amazing array of spices. How can you keep them fresh and easy to find when you need them? We found some great ways to store and organize your spices, before they take over your pantry.

Whether you love the spicy kick of cayenne pepper in stir-fry or the hint of basil in your homemade pasta sauce, one thing is certain — you have more spices in your pantry than your grandmother could ever have imagined. Even if you don't cook as often as you'd like to, having spices handy helps you kick up the flavor in any dish you create. So what do you need to know about storing spices?

Spices 101

Proper storage of your spices will help them retain flavor and color longer. Oxygen, heat and light are three things to protect your spices from. Here are a few tips on storing your spices to get the most life out of them.

  • Buy smaller quantities of spices rather than an economy-sized container at the discount store. Many specialty markets sell herbs and spices in bulk, so you can buy only the quantity you'll need.
  • Consider buying whole spices and grinding your own, since flavor begins to deteriorate once they are ground.
  • When storing spices on the countertop or in a wall-mounted spice rack, make sure spices are not in clear containers, which let in too much light. If you like to be able to see your spices, consider tins with clear lids only.
  • If possible, store your spices away from heat, which can cause the flavor to deteriorate faster.
  • Some spices last longer than others. If you aren't sure whether a spice is still good to use, check the color and fragrance. Spices won't really go "bad," but your recipe won't taste as amazing when you use out-of-date spices.

Organization

How you choose to organize your spices is up to you. Some prefer to stash them alphabetically while others like organizing them by type — think herbs, ethnic spices, salts or peppers. We found some great spice storage options no matter how you choose to organize them.

This revolving spice rack has 16 spice jars on a white plastic stand. While it would be a great accent on the countertop, because of the clear jars spices would last longer if this were stored in your pantry.

Mastrad spice jars with stand

Stainless steel has a classic look, and the Mastrad spice jars with stand look great either wall-mounted or on the countertop. The jars are magnetized and have an acrylic window on top so you can easily see what's inside.

Linus in-drawer spice rack

The Linus in-drawer spice rack is made of easy-to-clean clear plastic and has three angled tiers to help you see all of your spices easily and still keep them from cluttering your countertop.

Zero gravity magnetic spice rack

This Zero gravity magnetic spice rack comes with 12 jars you can hang any way you want, including upside down. The unique design saves space and looks sleek in your kitchen. Jars have settings for shaking just a bit or pouring a bunch.

SpiceStack organizer

The SpiceStack organizer is a great way to store lots of spices in a compact space. The drawers pull out and hang down to display spices at eye level. It can hold 18 full-size spice jars or 36 half-size jars.

stainless steel spice box

This stainless steel spice box has seven small removable containers inside a large, round container and is a great way to organize your spices by cuisine. The double lid keeps your spices fresh longer.

With a little bit of help, you can tame those spices in your pantry and put them to work.

What were on the Twitter feeds of celebrity moms this week? Actress Stacey Dash was “shocked” over the Twitter backlash after she tweeted her support of Mitt Romney. Bachelor couple Molly and Jason Mesnick tweeted their excitement over their baby announcement, while Jessica Simpson writes about her new maternity line. Singer Pink and pregnant actress Tamera Mowry round out our list of the top tweets of the week!

Stacey DashStacey Dash

Clueless star Stacey Dash tweeted her support of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, and topped off her message with a sexy photo of her wearing a red swimsuit in front of an American flag.

“Vote for Romney. The only choice for your future. @mittromney @teamromney #mittromney #VOTE #voteromney,” she tweeted.

That little tweet generated lots of backlash toward the 45-year-old star, who is a mom to 21-year-old Austin and 7-year-old Lola. Most of the comments are not fit to print, however she was called many not-so-nice names.

“Vote for the candidate with the supporters in the skimpiest outfits?” quipped one commenter.

“My humble opinion... EVERYONE is entitled to one,” Dash later tweeted, defending her views.

She did have some supporters, however, including vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

“Had a great conversation with @REALStaceyDash this afternoon. Thank you for your support!” he tweeted to her.

She has since appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight to talk about the backlash. She also re-tweeted this quote from Piers Morgan: “I don't get it...I was shocked, saddened.“ @REALStaceyDash on facing fury after endorsing @MittRomney.”

“It is my right as an American citizen. It’s my constitutional right to have my choice of who I want to vote for president… And I chose him not by the color of his skin but the content of his character,” she said in the interview.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson may no longer be pregnant, but she is still tweeting about maternity clothes!

“My maternity collection launches TODAY at Destination Maternity/@MotherhoodMat stores. Show off those bumps, ladies!” she wrote, with a link to her new line.

She also tweeted this adorable picture of her holding her daughter Maxwell. “Last year at Daddy's party, Maxwell was in my belly. This year she's in my arms!”

In case you are wondering what Simpson is watching on TV, she recently tweeted her favorites: “Big TV night.. Lots starting back up! The Good Wife, Dexter, Homeland, Revenge, and my friend @DaveAnnable10 has a new show 666 Park Avenue!”

Pink

It sounds like Pink’s mom isn’t crazy about her new music video for the song Try, in which she prances around in lingerie with a shirtless dude.

“My mom, after seeing the new video... "Wow, honey. I'm speechless. And uncomfortable. No one can ever say you play it safe." Thanks, mama,” Pink wrote.

Has motherhood changed this tough-as-nails singer? It sure sounds like it! She tweeted: “just watched "perfect" video for the first time since having Willow and I need some da** tissues. #softie”

Molly Mesnick

Molly and Jason Mesnick

“I step away for 5 minutes & come back to a ton of love,” tweeted Molly Mesnick, who just announced she is pregnant and expecting her first child with her husband, former Bachelor Jason Mesnick. ”Thank you! We couldn't be more excited about the pint size peanut on the way.”

Jason, who met Molly on season 13 of the show, has a 7-year-old, Ty, from a previous relationship.

“I am SO excited for your new addition! I just KNOW that nursery is going to be UHHMAZiNG!” tweeted former Bachelorette Jillian Harris to Molly.

“uh yeah...you're doing it,” Molly quipped back.

Tamera Mowry

“Had a beautiful brunch with my momma,” tweeted Tamera Mowry, who is pregnant with her first child. “Nothing like the love of a mother.” The former Sister, Sister star tweeted a photo of her pregnant belly next to her mom.

“Just off the phone with my momma…she went on a shopping spree for her grand baby! I’m sooooo excited!!!!!” she later wrote.

Mowry and her husband are expecting a baby boy in a few weeks — and they already have a baby name picked out .

It sounds like this actress is following the celebrity trend of wearing a custom hospital gown during labor and delivery. “Thanks @GlowMaven! Just picked my hospital gown from http://prettypushers.com. I don’t have to wear the stale hospital gown after all” she tweeted.

Lindsay Lohan is turning her back on her dad after he went to the media with her frantic phone call for help. Now she's found herself a new father figure: Mitt Romney.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan is super ticked off at her father and has turned against him in the wake of a vicious fight with her mom. But never fear! She has a new daddy waiting in the wings.

When Lindsay called her dad for help during the argument, Michael Lohan recorded the conversation and then sold it to the media. Class act, that guy. Now Lindsay is furious and desperately trying to do damage control.

"I told my dad a really hurtful and untruthful lie about my mom. She was not on cocaine," Lindsay told TMZ. "Daughters have fights with their moms. It happens a lot. It's normal."

Lindsay also said she was "done" with Michael and added that he "doesn't know what it means to be a father. He doesn't want to be a dad."

But of course every girl needs a father figure in her life, even Lindsay — and it seems she has already chosen one. Last night at Mr Pink's Ginseng Drink event at the Regent Beverly Wilshire, she told E! News that she is all about Mitt Romney.

Lindsay Lohan reveals her bullied past to Katie Couric >>

"I just think employment is really important right now," said the actress, who is this close to being unemployable because of how difficult it is to insure her. "So, as of now, Mitt Romney. As of now."

Why Mittens?

"It's a long story," she said. We're sure.

But regardless, Michael Lohan's not sweating it.

"I know Lindsay loves me and I love her very much," he told TMZ.

Halloween safety tips for parents

$
0
0
Halloween is big fun for kids of all ages, but it's important to keep it safe. Use these tips to ensure your child has a safe and happy Halloween.

Costume safety

Keep your little boys and ghouls safe this Halloween with these easy costume safety tips.

1

Get a good fit

Make sure to choose costumes that fit correctly so your little ones won't trip and fall. Long dresses or capes that drag on the floor may be cute, but not if your child ends up falling down. If using a mask, take care to check and see that your child can see and breathe properly. Face painting is a great alternative if you can't find a mask that fits well — just be sure to use washable, non-toxic paint or makeup that is safe for skin.

2

Stay visible

Adorn your children's costumes with reflective tape to make their costumes visible in the dark. Carry flashlights or glow sticks for more visibility to passing cars.

3

Be flame-resistant

Only choose Halloween costumes that are labeled "flame-resistant" in case of accidental contact with an open flame. If you are concerned about fire dangers at home, use small, safe, flickering light bulbs in your jack-o'-lanterns instead of real candles.

Safe trick-or-treating

The days of kids roaming the streets freely on Halloween are long gone. Make sure that a responsible adult accompanies your children when they are out trick-or-treating and use these tips to keep the night safe and fun.

1

Plan a safe route

Plan your trick-or-treating route ahead of time so that you can check out the neighborhoods to make sure they are safe and well-lit. Only visit homes of people you know or homes with a porch light.

2

Set a curfew

If you are letting older tween or teens trick-or-treat in a group, make sure they are accompanied by an older, responsible teenager that you know and trust. Discuss the route they will follow ahead of time and set a curfew for them to return home.

3

Discuss safety

Make sure to remind your children not to go inside the homes or cars of anyone they meet. Talk about how they always need to stay together as a group and never let a child or pair of children go off on their own.

Halloween alternatives

Trick-or-treating in your neighborhood isn't the only fun Halloween activity! Check your local paper for other safe and exciting Halloween alternatives in your community.

1

Plan a spooktacular party

Spook yourself silly by having a fang-tastic Halloween party in your own home. Carve pumpkins, serve creepy treats and play frighteningly fun Halloween games.

2

Visit a trunk-or-treat

Keep it safe by attending a trunk-or-treat carnival at your church or community center. Even if you feel comfortable among friends, always make sure to keep an eye on your kids at all times.

3

Pick a safe location

Go trick-or-treating at the mall, zoo, museum or other safe location. Many businesses go all out throwing exciting Halloween events for families. Check their websites and discover all the spooky fun available in your city this Halloween.

Saturday's SNL prediction: Expect awesome!

$

Christina Applegate is hosting SNL this week. Since Applegate can do no wrong, it's sure to be a great episode and, hopefully, breathe some life back into the show.

Christina Applegate hosts SNLChristina Applegate returns to SNL this Saturday and we're more than a little stoked.

She's no doubt stepping back onto the stage in order to promote the second season of her parenting comedy, Up All Night. Don't expect the beautiful actress to fall flat, though. Applegate also hosted back in 1993, halfway through her six-year stint on Married with Children. She's also quite the comedienne, nailing great roles in movies like Anchorman, Going the Distance and Hall Pass.

Speaking of Hall Pass and Going the Distance, despite last season's rumors of his departure, her former co-star in those films, Jason Sudeikis, is sticking it out on SNL for a little longer. Sudeikis is SNL's go-to guy for impersonations of Mitt Romney and Joe Biden. That makes him a much-needed member of the cast, at least through January. Since Americans sat through the vice presidential debate this week, you can expect to see Sudeikis as Joe Biden at least once on Saturday's episode.

Another reason for tuning in this weekend: Saturday's musical guest is Passion Pit. The electro-pop band from Massachusetts released a new album, Gossamer, earlier in the summer that's doing well on the charts. Get ready for two songs of dance-inducing noise.

While the musical acts have always been great, in recent years SNL has had a rough time living up to the glories of past seasons. Fans of the show seem to ignore the fact that for every hundred thousand humans in the world, there may only be one truly hysterical person. When you consider that vintage episodes of Saturday Night Live feature hardcore gut-busters like Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Will Ferrell, the comparison hardly seems fair. Can anyone live up to those guys?

Recent cast members like Tina Fey and Seth Meyers have certainly come the closest. But, as the newest season and fresh crop of comedians kicks into the swing of things, there's hope that a new version of the glory days may soon be in the works.

With hosts like Applegate and the constant cameos from former SNL greats, they seem well on their way.
