Families Are Hiring This New (& Expensive) Type of Nanny Who Works 22 Hours a Day

$

0

Some families are now paying up to $800 a day for nurses to take care of their newborn babies and help them sleep through the night.

These baby nurses work 22-hour shifts, often without a day off until the baby is 3 or 4 weeks old. After three or four weeks, they take a day off once every two weeks. The average pay for this kind of position ranges from $600 to $800 per day, but nurses are paid more if they are caring for twins and triplets.

These baby nurses aren’t always technically nurses. Some are nannies, while others are licensed practical nurses or registered nurses. They are often mothers themselves, meaning they’re taking time away from their own children to provide care to others.

According to Seth Norman Greenberg, vice president of domestic staffing company Pavillion Agency, families are keeping their baby nurses for longer than they have in the past, sometimes up to nine months after the birth of the child.

"Whereas most of my baby nurse cases in the past, up until a few years ago, would last between one and three months, now they're lasting between six and nine months," Greenberg said to Business Insider.

So what do baby nurses do exactly?

The Pavillion Agency website says their baby nurses will take care of “everything concerning the care of newborns.”

Baby nurses’ duties are dependent on the family and their needs. They can be hired to teach parents how to bathe, feed and diaper their child. Families may also request their baby nurses teach them to create a stable bedtime routine for their newborn. Some baby nurses are in charge of keeping the baby’s room clean, and others work to help get the baby on a regular sleep schedule for when they eventually end their care and turn it over to the parents.

Baby nurses are another form of help and flexibility many working parents want or need. Greenberg believes his clients are able to continue their professional lives without a beat because of their additional baby nurse help.

"All of these very successful people are able to be successful because their homes are run," he told Business Insider. "I spoke to someone the other day who said, 'My husband's a titan, he manages 10,000 people, and he can't put our kid to sleep.'"

Whether or not you agree with this intensive childcare routine, it's helping working parents everywhere get down to business. And for women, who are disproportionately burdened with taking care of kids, that's a huge win.

Michael C. Hall’s Latest Interview Has Dexter Fans Feeling Hopeful

Michael C. Hall has given many interviews in the five years since Dexter went off the air. But in his latest — a revealing conversation with the Daily Beast — Hall opened the door to Dexter’s future, if only a crack. It’s enough to give fans of the serial killer series legitimate hope.

Currently, Hall is enjoying time on stage, starring in Will Eno’s one-man play Thom Pain (Based on Nothing)

That doesn't mean he wouldn't carve out (yep, we went there) time in the future to reprise what is arguably his most iconic role to date. Hall explained to the Daily Beast that he understands fans’ need for another chapter of Dexter. However, he also feels as though the show’s final season was exactly what it should have been in the life of this complex character.

“The way the show ended gave no sense of closure for people and a lot of questions unanswered. [Dexter] seems to be in this self-imposed exile; he certainly didn’t ride off into the sunset. His sister died. It left a gnarly knot in some viewers’ stomachs. I stand by how that eighth season ended,” Hall said.

He elaborated that Dexter’s great tragedy was not in being a serial killer, but in the fact that he opened his heart up to more than that brutal world.

“He has a real connection to people, and all those people are compromised or destroyed in some way,” Hall said. “For it to all be tidied up after that would have not been honest. For him to simulate his own death and extricate himself from the context of his life made sense to me.”

More: Dexter Series Finale Review — The End Is Shocking

But then Hall opened the door ever so slightly, saying, “As far as any more of that happening, it’s possible.”

He joked, though, that he realizes that people tend to get carried away any time he comments on Dexter: “Every time I’m asked about this, I say, ‘Never say never.’ The next thing I know, there’s an announcement on the internet saying, ‘He’s going to do it again.’”

Sorry not sorry. We’re excited, and Hall’s comments give fans more food for thought than we’ve had in... well, ever.

Besides, Hall definitely didn’t do anything to discourage people from getting their hopes up. “There have been different possibilities that have come up. They haven’t felt worth doing. But there’s still something potentially there. But there are no immediate plans to do that,” he said.

Still something there? No immediate plans? Sounds like a solid chance to us.

Bruno Mars Is Donating 24K Thanksgiving Meals to Hawaii Residents in Need

Need something to help you get into the spirit of the season? Look no further than Bruno Mars for inspiration. The entertainer’s latest grand gesture will give you all the warm, fuzzy feelings you need heading into the holidays: He’s donating 24,000 meals to Hawaii residents in need for Thanksgiving.

According to Page Six, Hawaiian-born Mars announced on Sunday that he has pledged enough funds to the Salvation Army’s Hawaiian and Pacific Island Division to cover the meals provided during the organization’s annual Thanksgiving meal program.

The donation caps off Mars’ two-year 24K Magic World Tour in support of his Grammy-winning 2016 album 24K Magic. His final show of the tour — which hit a massive 200 stops — is on Sunday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

It’s the end of a three-night consecutive run at the venue, and a historic run at that. According to Complex, Mars is the first artist to sell out three back-to-back performances at the stadium, a feat that moved him above both Michael Jackson and U2.

A press release stated that Mars’ Thanksgiving contribution is “single-handedly expanding [the program’s] reach across the state,” as well as bringing it to home-bound residents.

This isn’t the singer's first major charitable, of course. In 2017, Mars donated $1 million to help people affected by the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

“Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters affected by this disaster. As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again,” Mars said in a statement at the time.

The “That’s What I Like” singer also actively gives both time and money to many other charities. In 2015, he was honored by the Make-a-Wish Foundation for his continued role in granting wishes to sick children.

Texas Veteran Mocked by Pete Davidson Comes to SNL for Comedic Vengeance

Guest stars are nothing new on Saturday Night Live, but this week’s proved to be particularly special. Just ahead of Veterans Day, the sketch comedy series invited Texas Representative-elect Dan Crenshaw to cameo on "Weekend Update" — where he roasted cast member Pete Davidson.

Asked to comment on a picture of Davidson, Crenshaw zinged, “This is Pete Davidson; he looks like if the meth from Breaking Bad was a person.”

He also referred to Davidson as “a Troll doll with a tapeworm” and “Martin Short in The Santa Clause 3,” noting of the last comparison that only “one of these people is actually good on SNL.”

Of course, in Crenshaw’s defense, Davidson kinda had it coming.

On the Nov. 3 episode, the comedian pulled out a photo of Crenshaw, an ex-Navy SEAL who lost an eye in Afghanistan. He then joked, “You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate in Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie. I’m sorry; I know he lost his eye in war or whatever. Whatever.”

Davidson received backlash essentially across the board for the derogatory remarks. So, he cued up "Weekend Update" this Saturday in a decidedly different fashion: with an apology.

“In what was I’m sure a huge shock for people who know me, I made a poor choice last week. Nah, I did. I made a joke about Lt. Cmdr. Dan Crenshaw, and on behalf of the show and myself, I apologize,” Davidson said to the camera.

He continued, “No, but I mean this from the bottom of my heart, it was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero, and he deserves all the respect in the world. And if any good came of this, maybe it’s that for one day, the left and right finally came together to agree on something — that I’m a dick.”

Enter Crenshaw, who rolled in at that precise moment to say, “Ya think? Thanks for making a Republican look good,” before launching into the aforementioned roast.

He even let a phone call go to voicemail, revealing in the process that his ringtone is a song by Ariana Grande (aka Davidson’s former fiancée).

But Crenshaw wasn’t just there to get in a few playful jabs at Davidson. The veteran, who lost his eye to an IED in Afghanistan during his third combat tour, had a more poignant message to share with SNL viewers.

“But seriously, there’s a lot of lessons to learn here. Not just that the left and right can still agree on some things, but also this: Americans can forgive one another. We can remember what still brings us together as a country and still see the good in each other,” he started.

Crenshaw also encouraged viewers to connect with a veteran this Veterans Day weekend with two simple words: “Never forget.”

“When you say never forget to a veteran, you are implying that as an American, you are in it with them. Not separated by some imaginary barrier between civilians and veterans but connected together as grateful fellow Americans who’ll never forget the sacrifices made by veterans past and present,” Crenshaw said. “And never forget those we lost on 9/11 — heroes like Pete’s father. So I’ll just say, Pete, ‘Never forget.’”

Davidson was 7 when his father, a New York City firefighter, was killed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Jenna Dewan Says She's 'Very Happy,' but She Won’t Discuss Steve Kazee Publicly

$

In October, romance rumors involving Jenna Dewan and fellow actor Steve Kazee surfaced; however, the Dewan won't be discussing her reported new relationship anytime soon. After Us Weekly asked Dewan about Kazee and her current personal life at the Baby2Baby Gala on Nov. 10, she said, "I don’t talk about my personal life, but thank you! I am very happy."

Dewan echoed the same sentiment while chatting with Entertainment Tonight at the gala over the weekend. After being asked, "Do you want to talk about new love?" she appeared to become somewhat shy and said, "I mean, no." Then, ET asked whether or not she's happy, which Dewan admitted (and with a big smile on her face), "Yes, I'm very happy, thank you for asking."

On Oct. 30, The Blast first reported Dewan was dating Kazee, who won a 2012 Tony for best performance by a leading male actor in a musical for Once. The two were seen at Griffith Park's haunted hayride with a group of friends. At the time, The Blast reported Dewan was "extremely excited about the romance."

Around the same time, People also reported the couple had allegedly "been dating for a couple [of] months," also saying Dewan's "really happy." Dewan and Kazee were also spotted kissing on Nov. 2 in Palm Springs.

Speaking of being happy with someone, on Nov. 9, Us Weekly published an interview with Kazee. During their chat, he talked about playing Colin Firth's Love Actually character in a live stage production of the 2003 romantic comedy and how he's "embraced my hopeless romanticism again" after going through a phase of not being a hopeless romantic. That may or may not be Kazee's way of hinting at Dewan, but either way, it sure sounds like he's a huge believer in love.

As for Dewan remaining mum on her current relationship status, it's understandable she doesn't want to talk about Kazee openly, especially after having such a public romance with her now-ex-husband Channing Tatum

Dewan might simply want to keep what sounds like a relatively new relationship with Kazee close to the chest for now. Plus, after having a pretty open romance with Tatum over the years, maybe Dewan wants to handle her personal life differently now.

Even though Dewan doesn't want to have a public conversation about Kazee at this point in time, all that matters is she's "very happy." How can anyone argue with that?

Simple Self-Care Routines That Could Help Benefit Your Mental Health

When you have a never-ending to-do list to attend to, it's easy to let self-care fall by the wayside. But by making self-care a priority, you'll be better equipped to handle every stressful hurdle that's thrown your way in your professional and personal lives. And luckily, there are a number of self-care routines that can be easily integrated into your daily schedule.

Not sure where to begin? Here are some ideas try.

Plan something to look forward to

Dr. Jennifer Guttman, clinical psychologist and author of the new book A Path To Sustainable Life Satisfaction, tells SheKnows that having something to look forward to can do the mind a world of good. "Making a plan in the future gives us the forward momentum to get through boring or difficult days and reminds us that we care enough about ourselves to make a plan to do something nice for ourselves in the future," Guttman says.

Whether it's a vacation, going to the theater or spending a day on the ski slopes, any enjoyable activity that requires some advance planning can lift your spirits.

Spend time outdoors

Becky Howie, a registered psychotherapist at NatureWise Counseling in Colorado, emphasizes the importance of spending time outside. If you're rushing from one building to another in an attempt to get it all done, chances are you rarely get the opportunity to appreciate your natural surroundings. If you're not the outdoorsy type, don't worry — this routine can be as simple as taking a moment to appreciate your natural surroundings rather than rushing right past them.

"Studies have shown that time spent in nature lowers the level of cortisol (the stress hormone) in our systems," Howie tells SheKnows. "So next time you’re on your way to work, stop and look up at the clouds in the sky for 30 seconds and just let yourself feel the sun on your face and enjoy it."

Start a pride journal

Karen R. Koenig, a licensed clinical social worker, recommends starting a pride journal, which tracks everything you're proud of doing. "Nothing is too small to include," she tells SheKnows. As an example, Koenig explains she uses this practice with clients who have overeating disorders and are extremely hard on themselves.

"Mostly, they see only the behaviors that they did wrong and are ashamed of — not the ones they did right and are proud of," she explains. "A pride journal helps them track these proud moments daily and is a great self-esteem booster."

Of course, pride journals can be applied to all aspects of our lives.

Practice loving-kindness meditation

There are many forms of mindfulness and meditation, but Howie says the most effective for self-care is loving-kindness meditation.

"It's a particular form of mindfulness that invites us to treat ourselves with gentleness, the same kindness and gentleness that we might offer to a dear friend or a child in pain," she explains. Begin by wishing positive things for yourself, such as "May I be healthy," "May I be happy," and "May I be peaceful and at ease."

Howie provides the caveat that many people struggle with offering such kindness to themselves, so she typically encourages clients to start with a beloved person or pet in their life where the positive thoughts flow naturally.

"Begin there, and then if you can move towards offering the same kindness to yourself, wonderful!" Howie says. "If not, that’s OK too. Just spending time wishing another well will also boost our spirits and can be an act of self-care."

Learn to say no

"This one might not seem obvious, but I find it makes so many other forms of self-care a possibility," Howie explains. When we default to saying yes to all the things we think we "should" be doing, we end up devoting a great deal of time to the whims of those around us and are left with inadequate "scraps of time" to take care of ourselves.

"When we learn to say no to requests from others, whether it’s a friend wanting to go out for drinks or your boss asking you to take on yet another project at work, then we make room to say yes to ourselves and our own needs," Howie says.

Finally, remember self-care is a necessity and not a luxury — so don't feel guilty about planning something special for yourself or saying no to an event or project that will leave you too depleted to engage in self-care.

I remember when we first got the internet at home. The world immediately felt bigger, and I loved looking everything up. Even schoolwork became a lot more fun. While the internet may be old hat now, there's a new generation of tech making learning more fun, functional and interactive for kids.

Voice-activated technology like the Amazon Echo Dots Kids Edition is bringing learning into the future, the same way the internet transformed it for me. We asked some parents about the educational benefits for their kids using the Echo Dot Kids Edition at home, and they answered with everything from musical education to confidence building.

It's like a personal piano teacher

If you're teaching your kids to play the piano at home, you can use the Amazon Echo Dot Kids Edition to make ear training more fun. Use the Bamboo Music skill on Echo Dot Kids Edition. The skill will walk them through a chosen song, and they just need to find and play the notes along with Alexa. It turns daily practice into a fun listening game.

It's a screen-free way to practice using technology

It's important for kids to feel comfortable with technology, but you also don't want them to be glued to a screen all day. That's when the Echo Dot Kids Edition comes in handy. It allows children to engage with kid-friendly content while sparking creativity and imagination without staring at a screen. The best part is parents can create daily goals, set time limits and control content on the parent dashboard.

It offers easy spell-checking and fact-checking

On the Echo Dot Kids Edition, Alexa can answer kid-friendly requests like spelling and fact-checks, which can help kids get into the habit of looking things up for themselves.

It cultivates speech development

"We have a 5-year-old who is shy, who lets her brothers talk for her," says Amazon customer Jose B. "Since getting an Echo Dot [Kids Edition] even her teacher has talked to us how she is talking louder, clearer and with more confidence."

Echo Dot Kids Edition, along with a little help from parents, could be the educational tool that your child needs. Learning practical skills has never been more interactive ... or fun!

2. Free Birds

Destined to be a new favorite Thanksgiving movie, 2013's Free Birds stars Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson voicing two turkeys who are looking to avoid ending up on someone's Thanksgiving dinner table by any means necessary. You can watch Free Birds on Amazon Prime Video

3. Miracle on 34th Street

Technically, Miracle on 34th Street could be thrown into the Thanksgiving movie mix because it begins during a fictional version of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and continues through the rest of the holidays. 4. Holiday Inn

Holiday Inn is a delightful classic musical that will no doubt have your kids singing and dancing along right from the opening credits. 7. Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving

If you have younger kids, definitely consider renting Winnie the Pooh: Seasons of Giving on YouTube Movies. The sweet special features a series of montages focused on Winnie the Pooh and his friends celebrating different holidays, including (you guessed it) Thanksgiving.

8. Curly Sue

Beloved director John Hughes' final film, Curly Sue, is an unconventional pick for a Thanksgiving kids movie, but it's also a ton of fun and it's officially old enough to be considered a classic. Why not give it a try? The film follows two grifters (played by Jim Belushi and Alisan Porter) who try to con a well-to-do woman (played by Kelly Lynch). It loosely takes place around Thanksgiving and features an unconventional family dynamic and characters looking for a place to call home. Rent Curly Sue on Amazon Prime Video.

9. Steven Universe, "Gem Harvest"

From season four, the Steven Universe episode "Gem Harvest" puts a unique spin on Thanksgiving, with beloved protagonist Steven Universe visiting two very special Gems, Lapis and Peridot, and meeting a strange new character during his annual autumn visit. The episode is quick and easy to find (part one is above and part two is here), and it will undoubtedly keep your kids occupied as you're doing last-minute Thanksgiving prep.

This Is the Time of Day When You Burn the Most Calories

When making informed choices about what we eat, some people turn to calorie counts on foods and in turn pay attention to how many calories they've burned during a workout. Of course, the jury's out on whether counting calories even matters, but those who do find these units of energy helpful may be wondering which time of day your body burns the most calories while at rest. Now, thanks to new research, we know.

According to an article published in the journal Current Biology, our bodies burn calories in different amounts throughout the day. As it turns out, our bodies burn 10 percent more calories in the late afternoon and early evening than in the early morning hours.

The study reinforces the idea that our circadian clock helps guide our metabolism and may help to explain why an irregular eating and sleeping schedule may cause people to gain weight.

"The fact that doing the same thing at one time of day burned so many more calories than doing the same thing at a different time of day surprised us," Dr. Kirsi-Marja Zitting of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School and lead author of the paper, said in a statement.

The study involved having participants stay in a lab without any clocks or clues about what time it was and dictate the times they went to sleep and woke up. Researchers took their temperatures to find out when they were using the most energy while resting.

"It is not only what we eat, but when we eat — and rest — that impacts how much energy we burn or store as fat," Duffy says. "Regularity of habits such as eating and sleeping is very important to overall health."

1. The women of Avengers: Infinity War sent their love California

During their acceptance speech for Movie of 2018 for Avengers: Infinity War, stars Scarlett Johansson, Danai Gurira and Pom Klementieff dedicated the award to "the great state of California." Commenting on wildfires that are currently devastating the southern part of the state, Gurira said, "The devastation and the turmoil that we are going through right now, that people are going through right now out there — we just want to say we are with you." She also thanked first responders and encouraged the PCAs audience to help in whatever way they can.

2. Melissa McCarthy got teary during her acceptance speech

Melissa McCarthy took home the People's icon award and got emotional about how much it means that so many people voted for her. "I'm thankful to you because you actually engaged and you cared about things," she said. "You took the time and put the effort in to have your voice be heard and that is tremendously inspiring to me." She also, of course, employed plenty of comedy to elevate what she had to say.

3. Nicki Minaj hit on Michael B. Jordan

Nicki Minaj took the chance to flirt with Black Panther and Creed 2 star Michael B. Jordan and yes, it was just as wild IRL as it sounds.

4. Jimmy Fallon had nothing but love for his BFF Justin Timberlake

During his acceptance speech for "Nighttime Talk Show of 2018," Jimmy Fallon jokingly  thanked his "soulmate," Justin Timberlake, for his success.

5. The Bella twins had an interesting proposal for the Kardashians

On the red carpet before the actual show, Nikki and Brie Bella challenged the Kardashian sisters to a wrestling match, which would no doubt draw huge views if it ever actually happened.

The Black Friday & Cyber Monday Deals You Need to Know About

It’s the most wonderful — stressful, anxiety-ridden, crowded yet glorious — two days of the year: Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

For many of us, Thanksgiving dinner hasn’t even fully settled before we find ourselves already halfway to Target or Kohl’s or have a laptop heating up on our laps as we open up the umpteenth tab of our favorite online stores.

It’s as if no matter how hard we try to resist it, we just can’t escape the retail wrath of these two days.

And why would we want to? Stellar deals on electronics are virtually everyone’s weakness. Plus, many tend to wait until this particular weekend to get all their Christmas shopping out of the way.

Not only does it benefit consumers, but holiday season, including Black Friday (on Nov. 23 this year) and Cyber Monday (Nov. 26), represents as much as 30 percent of annual sales according to National Retail Federation. Jewelry stores specifically accounted for about 28.6 percent of sales in 2016.

Ready to start planning your Black Friday and Cyber Monday? This year, retailers are releasing their deals even earlier than last, so you’re in luck if you’re just itching to get your Black Friday and Cyber Monday plans lined up.

Rejoice! Target's Weekend Deals Are Back

$

And now a PSA for everyone who has yet to do their holiday shopping (us included): Target's weekend deals are back.

For the very first time last year, Target launched its weekend deals, special savings only found on Saturday and Sunday. With the holidays creeping up on us all, every weekend counts — and Target gets it.

The weekend deals, which customers can shop in-store and online, quietly started this past weekend, and Target will continue to post deals through mid-December.

Of course, there's a reason Target focused on giving us the very best deals on the weekend. When do you typically step into Target to swiftly and unintentionally spend over $100? And Target has the stats to back it up. According to their press release, twice as many guests shop Target on Saturdays and Sundays versus a typical weekday. Plus, according to Workarea, Sundays are the biggest shopping day of the week, particularly for online shoppers.

This past weekend, Target’s weekend deals included saving 25 percent on home decor, including furniture, bedding, rugs and more. As for the deals for this upcoming weekend, we won’t know until Wednesday, as that’s the day Target has decided to announce its weekend deals each week.

In the meantime, you can flip through its weekly ad, which for this week includes a free $10 gift card when you spend $50 on food and/or beverages in-store. The ad also includes virtually everything you need to host this year's Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving meal, like an 18-quart roaster oven on sale for $25.

Target is also getting into the holiday spirit by offering free two-day shipping, and they've also transformed their shipping boxes with new festive designs.

Target new shipping boxes designs

“Target’s new shipping boxes help elevate the everyday,” said Todd Waterbury, Target’s chief creative officer, in a press release. “We wanted to take a routine interaction, like receiving a shipping box on your doorstep, and turn it into an expression of joy using Target’s iconic branding. We took a unique creative approach to each of the three box designs, so that it brings to life our mascot Bullseye in a different and playful way, that’s unmistakably Target for our guests.”

Not gonna lie, they’re almost too cute to toss.

Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani Were Too Cute at the People's Choice Awards

Blake Shelton hit the stage twice at Sunday's 2018 People's Choice Awards, once for his accomplishments as a country star and once for his accomplishments as a judge on NBC's The Voice. When Shelton headed up with Carson Daly to accept their award for competition show of 2018 for The Voice, he and girlfriend Gwen Stefani had a super-cute moment thanks to Daly calling her up onstage.

In the clip from the show, after Daly began the duo's acceptance speech, including shoutouts to the firefighters in California and U.S. military veterans, he said, "And we have our own coach, Gwen Stefani — I want to thank Gwen Stefani before Blake does. Thank you, Gwen, and all of our coaches on The Voice."

Shelton then took the lead and pointed to where Stefani was sitting in the audience. “All-time favorite coach, right there, Gwen Stefani. I love her,” he said.

Daly invited Stefani to the stage, which she initially refused when the camera cut to her seat. With encouragement from Daly chanting, "Gwen! Gwen! Gwen!" and cheers from the audience, she made her way to the stage and shared a quick embrace with Shelton.

“Who would’ve thought that this country artist could land one of my oldest friends in the music business?” Daly joked.

“Oh, my God, I’m so excited to be with Blake Shelton!” Stefani said when Daly asked her to say something. She added, "Thank you so much." Then she pushed the two men toward the microphone and stepped back, clearly wanting them to wrap things up — which Daly did by cracking another joke about the couple.

“They’re gonna get a room," Daly said.

After the broadcast, Stefani shared a snap of the three of them onstage, writing, "Congrats @blakeshelton love u @carsondaly." She also shared photos from the red carpet as well as a sweet group photo that again included Daly.

Since Shelton and Stefani met on The Voice, it's pretty adorable they got to share this moment during the PCAs. Daly also clearly embraced his role as the third wheel, which added a comical air to the whole exchange.

The Easiest Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Crafts for Little Hands

Fall is for leaf-peeping, fire-building, pumpkin-picking and — you guessed it — seasonal craft-making. But not all Thanksgiving/fall crafts are created equal in terms of skill level. And it's never fun to watch tears of frustration form when a kid tries to create some crazy-difficult paper turkey DIY. Enter these super-easy crafts.

These fun projects are simple enough for even your tiniest of crafters. Plus, there's even a thankful tree craft that doubles as a teachable moment for talking about gratitude. So gather your kids and your jar o' paste — and just make sure they don't eat it in the process.

Paper plate pumpkin craft

Paper plate pumpkin craft

The pumpkin is a classic symbol of fall. Kids can enjoy making a simple Thanksgiving decoration while practicing coordination and fine motor skills.

Supplies:

  • Paintbrush
  • Sturdy paper plate
  • Craft glue watered down to a paint consistency
  • Orange tissue paper, cut in small squares
  • Green construction paper, cut into a small rectangle

Directions:

  1. With the paintbrush, "paint" the wrong side of the paper plate with the watered-down glue.
  2. Glue pieces of the orange tissue paper onto the plate.
  3. Glue the green construction paper to the top.

Paper cup turkey craft

paper cup turkey craft

Have your child gather some fall leaves and use them to make "feathers" on an adorable paper cup turkey. Once it's complete, the turkey will be a cute decoration for your tabletop or mantel.

Supplies:

  • Paintbrush
  • Brown craft paint
  • Paper cup
  • Glue
  • Fall leaves
  • Scissors
  • White, orange and red construction paper (use scraps if you have them)
  • Black pen

Directions:

  1. With the paintbrush, apply the brown paint to the paper cup. Allow it to dry.
  2. Turn the cup upside down and glue fall leaves to the back to make the turkey's feathers.
  3. With the scissors and white construction paper, cut out 2 small circles to create the eyes. Use your black pen to put a black dot in the center of each circle; then, glue them onto the cup.
  4. With the scissors and red construction paper, cut out a squiggle to form the gobbler; then, glue it on the cup below the eyes, leaving a little room for the beak to overlap the gobbler.
  5. With the scissors and orange construction paper, cut out a triangle for the beak and 2 (3-toed) feet. Glue the beak under the eyes and over the gobbler (leaving some of the gobbler visible) and glue the feet to the bottom lip of the cup.

Thanksgiving hand wreath craft

Thanksgiving hand wreath craft

Use this craft to talk about hands and how we can use them to be helpful and kind to others.

Supplies:

  • Pencil
  • Orange, red, yellow and brown construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Ribbon (optional)

Directions:

  1. Using the pencil, trace your child's hand 4 to 6 times onto each color of paper.
  2. Using the scissors, cut out each handprint.
  3. Alternate colors while gluing the palm of each handprint together, keeping the fingers pointed toward the outside of the wreath.
  4. If desired, cut a piece of ribbon, tie it in a bow and attach it to the top or bottom of the wreath.

Thankful tree craft

I am thankful for tree craft

This is a perfect way to document the amazing, funny and honest things your child says. Yes, the example above has pretty standard responses, but if your kids are anything like ours, there will also be plenty of "I'm thankful for yellow" and "I'm thankful for outer space"... you get the idea. You'll be sure to keep this Thanksgiving craft for years to come.

Supplies:

  • Pencil
  • Brown, orange and yellow construction paper
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • Blue card stock paper
  • Glue stick

Directions:

  1. Using the pencil, draw a tree trunk with bare branches on the brown construction paper.
  2. Using the black marker, write, "I am thankful for... " on the tree trunk.
  3. Using the scissors, cut out the tree and glue it to the blue card stock.
  4. Cut leaves out of the brown, orange and yellow construction paper.
  5. Ask your child what he or she is thankful for, and write 1 answer on each leaf (if your child is old enough, they can write on the leaves themselves).
  6. Glue the leaves around the branches of the tree.

The Impossible Burger Is Finally Hitting Grocery Stores

The time has finally come — and vegans, you might want to sit down for this news: The über-popular plant-based burger Impossible Burger is making its way to grocery stores.

Impossible Foods, the creator of the burger, will begin selling the Impossible Burger in stores starting next year “in response to overwhelming demand” according to a press release.

“By far the No. 1 message from fans on social media is, ‘When will I be able to buy and cook the Impossible Burger at home?’” says Impossible Foods’ CEO and founder Dr. Patrick Brown in the press release. “We can’t wait until home chefs experience the magic and delight of the first plant-based meat that actually cooks and tastes like meat from animals — without any compromise.”

The Impossible Burger is already available in about 5,000 restaurants in all 50 states, including Fatburger, White Castle, Wahlburgers, Umami Burger and Hopdoddy, and two more restaurants will be added to the list: Dog Haus Biergarten and Hurricane Grill & Wings. Starting Monday, the Impossible Burger and Impossible Slider will debut at more than 30 Dog Haus locations nationwide and 55 Hurricane Grill & Wings locations.

The award-winning burger debuted in 2016, and since then, Impossible Foods has sold 13 million burgers through its restaurant partnerships. And Americans have eaten more than 13 million Impossible Burgers since July 2016.

Impossible Foods’ goal is to “eliminate the need for animals as a food production technology” by 2035.

No other details regarding its retail launch are available, but in the meantime, use Impossible Foods’ locator to find the restaurant near you that serves the Impossible Burger, the “burger that bleeds.”

Pippa Middleton's Son Is Named After Some Very Special Family Members

Nearly a month after Pippa Middleton gave birth to her first child with husband James Matthews on Oct. 15, we finally know their son's full name. It was previously kept under wraps, but the Daily Mail acquired the birth certificate and released the information on Sunday along with theories about the name's meaning.

According to reports, Middleton and Matthews named their first son Arthur Michael William Matthews. His first middle name, Michael, is believed to be for Middleton's father as well as Matthews' brother, who died at just 22 years old while climbing Mount Everest in 1999.

Honoring his memory with their son's name makes sense — especially since the couple has done a significant amount of work raising money for education projects in Africa and Asia through the nonprofit Michael Matthews Foundation.

As noted by Us Weekly, the new baby also shares a middle name with his cousin, Prince Louis — Prince William of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (aka, Pippa's sister, Kate Middleton) named their 6-month-old son Louis Arthur Charles. William's middle name is also Arthur, as is Prince Charles'.

Us previously reported Middleton gave birth to baby Arthur at the private Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital, which is where Kate gave birth to all three of her children. He was born just hours after Prince Harry of Sussex and Meghan (née Markle), Duchess of Sussex, announced they are expecting their first child in the spring.

The outlet reports that Middleton turned to Kate for advice during her pregnancy, which she will likely keep doing as she adapts to life as a new mom. “Kate has so much knowledge to share," a source told Us. “She’s a walking baby encyclopedia at this point!”

We're certain Kate is providing awesome advice to her little sister, and we wish Middleton and Matthews the best of luck on their new journey as parents.

Alicia Silverstone Says Her Son Has Never Gotten Sick for This Reason

Alicia Silverstone hasn't been shy about sharing some of the, uh, unconventional ways she approaches parenting her 7-year-old son, Bear. The internet (and yours truly) collectively freaked out when she told Stephen Colbert Bear's attempt to French kiss her was "sweet" (don't worry — she kept her mouth closed). Then there's her controversial anti-vaxxing views... oh, and the matter of pre-chewing Bear's food before feeding him and sharing a video with the world.

MoreAlicia Silverstone Unfazed That Son Bear Blu Tried to French-Kiss Her

But we can rest assured about one thing — according to Silverstone, Bear has never gotten sick or needed to take medicine. And she says the family's vegan diet is to thank for Bear's seven year's of near-perfect health.

:

"He’s never had to take medicine in his life," Silverstone told Page Six on Thursday at Good Housekeeping’s #RaiseTheGreenBar sustainability summit. "He can get sniffles and a runny nose but he’s not down, he still goes to school. Two times in his life has he been like 'Mommy I don’t feel good,' and it was only for a few hours and he was back running around."

Wow. Raise your hand if you're jealous Silverstone has never spent the night awake with a sick child.

:

Feeding a young child a vegan diet has been a source of controversy, but Silverstone insists Bear is all about that vegan life. "[Bear] loves the food I give him," she told People in 2014. "He’s not being deprived of anything. For him, having amazing fruit is like candy!"

As the old adage goes, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." And it seems like Bear is a happy, healthy kid — and that's something to smile about even if we not-so-secretly suspect it has nothing to do with veganism.

We Can Now Bank Fat Stem Cells — but Should We?

$

0

Stem cell therapies are getting a lot of attention lately for their potential to address health conditions like osteoarthritis, heart disease, spinal cord injuries and strokes. But the keyword here is “potential.” While some therapeutic uses for stem cells are already used on a regular basis — like stem cell transplants for some leukemia patients — there’s still a lot we don’t know about all the different applications purported to treat a wide variety of conditions.

This uncertainty about potential future uses for stem cells is most visible when it comes to stem cell banking. For example, many soon-to-be or new parents are approached by companies that offer umbilical cord blood collection and storage as a sort-of insurance policy for a child’s future health. The problem is that at this point, we don’t yet know whether the stem cells in umbilical cord blood will be at all useful to the child in the future.

Now, other companies are getting in on the stem-cells-as-insurance game, offering banking services following other procedures, like liposuction. But is there any benefit to this type of stem cell banking, or is this another profit-driven enterprise? We spoke to some experts as well as a company that’s offering this service to get more information.

What are stem cells?

According to recent research published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine pivot on using a type of cell, called a stem cell, to treat illnesses.

Per the National Institute of Health, stem cells are cells that can adapt and renew themselves — even after long periods of inactivity. Under certain conditions, stem cells can also merge with specific organs or tissue systems, which means they have the ability to repair and regenerate different types of tissues throughout the body. Stem cells are obtained via various sources, such as bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, cord tissue and adipose fat tissue.

What is fat stem cell biobanking?

Adipose fat tissue is loose connective fat tissue used to store energy as well as to cushion and insulate the body. More important, the stem cells found in adipose fat tissue have the capacity for self-renewal and differentiation, which some have suggested may make them good candidates for banking.

Forever Labs — which bills itself as the first company to biobank young adult stem cells — is now offering adipose fat stem cell biobanking. Specifically, the service is offered for those undergoing liposuction as an option to also collect, freeze and bank stem cells from fat tissue already removed in the process of the liposuction procedure.

“The fat-banking procedure will allow the thousands who undergo liposuction to take full advantage of their cells that would have otherwise been discarded,” Steven Clausnitzer, Forever Labs CEO and cofounder, said in a statement emailed to SheKnows. “Banking these cells today provides you with an extraordinary investment for your future health.”

Clausnitzer tells SheKnows there are “copious amounts” of stem cells found in the fat removed during the liposuction procedure. “In particular, mesenchymal stem cells are being used in over 700 clinical trials to treat age-related diseases like cardiovascular diseases, stroke, Alzheimer’s, you name it … As you age, your stem cells decline in function, and you’re going to want to have access to the best possible cells later in life,” he adds.

Much like the companies urging parents to collect and bank their child’s umbilical cord blood, Forever Labs is banking on the idea that people will want to pay to store their stem cells in the hopes that at some point in the future, they will have a clear therapeutic use.

“You basically have these stem cells, and you have this byproduct of a medical procedure — and you can take advantage of it,” Forever Labs cofounder Dr. Mark Katakowski tells SheKnows.

Is banking fat stem cells a good investment?

Despite the excitement surrounding the possible benefits of stem cell therapies and post-lipo biobanking, some experts warn that more research is needed to better understand how well the treatments actually work. Like umbilical cord blood banking, the potential benefits of fat stem cell banking are not yet clearly defined, Dr. Scott Newman, a physician, tells SheKnows.

“The question of how good an idea this is really lies in a lot of unknowns,” he explains. “In this case, if someone is having liposuction anyway, then the only negative here is the cost of this storage process… The advantages are difficult to assess.”

In other words, while there are no health risks associated with banking fat stem cells because they would have been discarded anyway, it’s not yet clear whether banking them will be a good financial investment.

“The best analogy I can give is to imagine an insurance policy that has a guaranteed cost (premium), and if an event occurs that is covered by the insurance, the policy might pay out. The costs are there, but if needed, the benefits are not guaranteed,” Newman says.

So, does it pay to be optimistic? With medical technology constantly advancing and the use of stem cells increasing, should we be banking on fat stem cells?

“Stem cells are being used more and more in health care,” Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a physician and director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at the Mount Sinai Hospital, tells SheKnows. “We don’t yet know what the future will bring in terms of available stem cell technologies,” he says.

While many experts extol the virtues of stem cell therapies (and the jury’s still out for others), the FDA warns that while many stem cell treatments look promising for a variety of health conditions, misleading or unethical stem cell clinics do exist.

As with any medical procedure, it’s important to do your research beforehand. Make sure you’re seeing properly licensed medical health professionals for any stem cell therapies you’re considering, and be sure to discuss any potential side effects with your doctor before scheduling your procedure.

And when it comes to banking stem cells — whether they’re from your child’s umbilical cord blood or your own from a recent procedure — it’s really up to you. If you have the financial resources to do it, then it seems the only harm that could come from paying for stem cell storage would be not getting a return on your investment.

The Obamas Went to Marriage Counseling — & Every Parent Will Understand Why

$

It's no secret that millions of people look to Barack and Michelle Obama as #RelationshipGoals. But Michelle Obama is keeping things refreshingly honest and candid by sharing that, just like every other couple, the pair has gone through some difficult times during their 26 years of marriage.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey featured in the December issue of Elle, the former first lady shared that she and the former president went to marriage counseling at the beginning of his presidency.

A large part of the reason they sought counseling was because Michelle Obama had to adjust to parenting solo on many late nights. "When you get married and have kids, your whole plan, once again, gets upended. Especially if you get married to somebody who has a career that swallows up everything, which is what politics is," she told Winfrey. "I've got two kids, and I'm trying to hold everything down while he's traveling back and forth from Washington or Springfield."

In order to be proactive, the couple sought marriage counseling to "work through this stuff." Michelle Obama said therapy improved both her relationship and her own sense of self. In particular, she realized she felt "vulnerable" during the couple's time apart and she needed to adjust her idea of what marriage would always be like.

"I always thought love was up close. Love is the dinner table, love is consistency, it is presence," Obama said. "So I had to share my vulnerability and also learn to love differently. It was an important part of my journey of becoming. Understanding how to become us."

Obama said she's opening up about counseling because she wants other couples to know marriage is hard for everyone — even couples who are viewed as #RelationshipGoals.

We love Obama's honesty and openness about therapy — something that's still somewhat taboo and definitely shouldn't be. Of course, most people's spouses won't become president of the United States, but it's common for career changes to upend parenting routines and leave one parent holding down the fort at home while the other travels or burns the midnight oil at a new job. If you're in this situation, remember Obama's basic but oh-so-important words of wisdom:"[M]arriage is hard!"

Luckily, marriage and relationship counselors are there to help you work through all the ups and downs of your relationship and parenting.

Have a Very Merry Christmas with Netflix's Full Line-Up of Holiday Titles

We previously announced some of the Netflix original Christmas movie titles coming to the streaming service this holiday season, but wait! That's not all. Netflix has a whole lineup for the next two months to get you in the spirit, no matter what holiday you celebrate.

In a holiday compilation video posted on Monday, Netflix teased everything it has going for the 2018 holiday season, including original content and more. Here are the programs we're most excited to see.

1. The Great British Baking Show: Holidays

Who doesn't love the Great British Baking Show (a.k.a. Great British Bake Off)? Bakers from the UK test their mite in the kitchen and support each other through every failure. This series is the most wholesome cooking competition around, so adding holidays to the mix is sure to create even more warm-fuzzies, especially since the special appears to include many of our past favorite bakers. The show starts streaming Nov. 30.

2. Nailed It! Holiday!

If you'd rather watch home cooks who are decidedly less skilled in the kitchen, check out the Nailed It! Holiday! special (available Dec. 7), which looks utterly delightful.
