Reese Witherspoon's & Jennifer Aniston's TV Salaries Are Revealed, & We're Blown Away

Here's some good news on the gender-parity front in Hollywood — some of your favorite female TV stars are straight-up making bank. Case in point? Per Variety, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston will each be paid $1.1 million for the upcoming (as-yet-untitled) Apple dramedy in which they’ll costar; by comparison, their male colead, Steve Carell, will make $600,000 per episode.

But as Variety's report indicates, Witherspoon and Aniston aren’t the only ones whose sizable paychecks bode well for women in entertainment. Elisabeth Moss makes $1 million per episode for The Handmaid’s Tale. For Amazon’s Homecoming, Julia Roberts will make $600,000 per episode, and for her work on The Voice, Kelly Clarkson is pulling in $560,000 per episode.

As you might imagine, women in Hollywood haven’t always gotten paid a figure reflective of the high caliber of their work. However, a law in the state of California barring employers from asking how much money potential employees made at previous jobs makes it impossible for Hollywood studios to perpetuate an outdated pay scale.

“Going in, it was ‘Oh my God, what do we do?’" Ayo Davis, head of casting and talent for ABC, told Variety, "because we were so indoctrinated into basing things on what that person’s last quote was. But once you step back and take a look at it, I think we all feel it’s important to pay across gender and race.”

ABC, for one, is being “much more thoughtful in our discussions about budget and competition” — a shift Davis says makes a difference.

And while the reported salaries included in Variety’s rundown don’t necessarily reflect it (few women of color are cited), the law is driving up salaries for women of color too.

Since studios can no longer negotiate based on previous quotes, the salaries of actors is subject to “what casting directors and producers consider their value to the project.” This fresh approach, says NBC’s exec VP of casting, Grace Wu, “has helped people that have been marginalized in the past. Which is really, I would say, women and people of color.”

Not surprisingly, this has in turn led to an increase in overall budgets in television across the board. But Davis insists that isn’t a deterrent. “We’re still expected to drive toward excellence, so we’re not going to skimp on talent,” said Davis.

It’s also worth noting that Modern Family star Sofía Vergara topped Forbes recently released list of the highest-paid TV actors in 2018. For the scoring period, Vergara earned $42.5 million, more than any other actor on TV regardless of gender.

The next-closest earner on the list, The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons, came in at $26.5 million, approximately $16 million less than Vergara.

More: The Male Big Bang Theory Stars Are Officially the Highest-Paid TV Actors in 2018

This is just another indication of the strides being made toward gender parity in the television industry. Per Forbes, the cumulative take-home of the 10 highest-earning female TV actors came in at $168.5 million. The cumulative take-home of the 10 highest-paid male TV actors was $181 million.

It’s a relatively small gap when you consider how woefully wide that disparity still is in the movie industry, where the top 10 highest-paid female film actors were paid only a quarter of what their male counterparts made.

Nicole Kidman's Daughters Will Appear in Season 2 of Big Little Lies

We seriously love it when actor and all-around low-key demi-goddess Nicole Kidman visits Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show. DeGeneres always manages to get the soft-spoken Oscar winner to talk... and talk... and talk. This time around, while discussing Kidman's huge HBO hit Big Little Lies, Kidman revealed that her daughters will appear in season two — how cool is that?

MoreNicole Kidman Will Be Honored at the Hollywood Film Awards

Kidman also revealed that the legendary Meryl Streep is thrilled to be on board, playing Kidman's character's mother-in-law. Streep apparently took the role without even reading the script — a major vote of confidence in Kidman and her series.

“She was like, ‘I want to be in the coven,’” Kidman joked to DeGeneres.

Yesterday, Kidman posted a thank you to DeGeneres on Instagram, saying, "Back again! Had so much fun... Love you, Ellen."

Kidman shares daughters Sunday Rose, 10, and Faith Margaret, 7, with country star Keith Urban (also a native Aussie). On Monday at a Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Kidman's new film, Destroyer, Kidman joked to Entertainment Tonight that her daughters are generally not too impressed with her day job.

MoreNicole Kidman Talks Work, Kids & Tabloid Gossip

“We were by the skin of our teeth trying to make this film, and I mean, my kids are always like, ‘What is she doing now? Our crazy mama,'" Kidman said.

Kidman added, “But it’s also interesting for them, I think, because they see me creating characters and, you know, they have vivid imaginations themselves and they construct stories, and so that’s all they know.”

Now the girls will have a chance to see their mom's work up close and personal — and put their own imaginations to work as actors alongside Meryl Streep no less. We can't imagine a cooler Take Your Kids to Work Day.

And maybe Kidman and Urban have budding directors on their hands. Their girls recently filmed their parents singing a sweet duet — and Urban posted it to his social media.

Does this mean Ava Phillippe is due as the next BLL cast member? Please...

Reese's Unveils New Thinner Peanut Butter Cups — & People Are Not Having It

On Friday, the Hershey Company made a big announcement. According to Business Insider, the chocolatier has created a new version of their famed Reese's peanut butter cup, and while this sounds like good news, it is anything but. The new cups — aptly dubbed Reese's Thins — will be 40 percent thinner and contain about half the amount of chocolate and peanut butter filling.

(Say what?!)

Michele Buck, Hershey North America’s president, told Business Insider the reason for their creation was to “appeal to those consumers who want something sweet with more permissibility.” However, many are not on board.

In fact, Reese's aficionados have taken to Twitter to complain.

Of course, we totally get where people are coming from. Really, we do. A quick — and totally unreliable — poll of our editorial team revealed this change was one exactly zero people asked for. However, we also understand where the Hershey Company is coming from and are certain they know their target demographic better than we do.

If you are one of the people excited about this news and are hoping to grab a Reese's Thin soon, you will have to wait. The product will not be available until March 2019. In the meantime, you can cut the fat (and calories) by sharing your cup with a friend.

How to Start a Conversation With Your Introverted Kid

$

0

“How was your day?” is a common way many parents greet their children when they get home from school. For some children, this simple inquiry will open up a long conversation filled with details and antidotes. But other children may not give much information, especially kids who are more introverted. Instead of a long answer, they may respond with simple, “Fine,” or just a shoulder shrug.

How can parents better communicate with quieter children? We asked an expert to find out.

What is an introvert?

People are born with different temperaments, extroversion or introversion, and this generally remains unchanged as they grow up.

The website Introvert, Dear defines being introverted as, “Someone who prefers calm, minimally stimulating environments. Introverts tend to feel drained after socializing and regain their energy by spending time alone.” It is estimated that 2 out of 5 children are born with an introverted temperament.

Being introverted used to be seen as less desirable than an extroverted, more outgoing personality. But in recent years, thanks in part to Susan Cain’s book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, the many positive aspects of being introverted are more widely recognized and appreciated. Dr. Michele Borba, author of Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World, tells SheKnows, “Introverts are cognitive. They tend to size situations up before reacting.”

The terms “introverted” and “shy” are sometimes used interchangeably but shouldn’t be. Introverted children may be slower to warm up than their extroverted peers and enjoy alone time. Shy children may not actually want to be alone but are more anxious in social situations. Borba cautions, “Labeling a child as 'shy' tends to have negative connotations. Parents want to boost their child’s confidence and self-esteem but labeling them has the opposite effect.”

So, how can you start a conversation with a kid who seems to hate conversations?

Ask the right questions

A question that can be answered with a “yes or no” tends not to yield a lot of information, especially from introverted children. Borba says, “Open-ended questions work best. Also, avoid predictable questions, such as, ‘How was your day?’ These questions tend to bore kids and make them less interested in responding.”

Borba suggests parents do some research and come up with better questions to ask. Read through their schedule, and if possible, see what topics or projects the class is working on. Parents can then ask more specific questions, such as, “Which character surprised you most in The Outsiders?” or “Which student climbed the rock wall fastest in gym today?” which may help open up more interesting conversation. Be sure it feels like you're interested in what they have to say and not prying or interrogating them.

Pick a good time to talk

There are certain times of day children will be more receptive to having a conversation. Parents need to tune into what works for their individual child. For many kids, discussing their day right when they return home is a good time. Their memories are fresh, and they may be happy to talk.

But for an introvert, right when they get home is probably one of the worst times to approach them with questions. After having been social all day, they may prefer to have some time alone before being ready to converse again. Borba found the best time to talk to her own son was at 5 p.m. She says, “I’d find him at the refrigerator eating a snack. He was more relaxed than when he first got home. He’d be eating, and we weren’t sitting right across from each other, so it was a less formal, less stressful conversation about his day.”

Give them time to warm up

After you ask an introverted child a question, wait for a response. Sounds simple, but it can be hard to do. Borba says, “What happens is the child doesn’t answer right away, so the parent will ask again or answer for them. Neither of these responses builds confidence.” Borba suggests parents wait and smile encouragingly. “It may seem like a long time, but by waiting, the parent gives the child a chance to formulate a response. If a lot of time passes, the parent can follow up with, ‘What do you think?’ but still don’t answer the question for the child.”

Getting children, especially introverted children, to open up may take time and patience. Borba explains, “Many children have not learned basic people skills. We’ve removed a lot of the play from their lives where they learned skills like ‘your turn -my turn’ and instead filled their days with scheduled activities. And all the technology has made kids more comfortable looking at their phones than looking someone in the eye.”

Insisting children respond for themselves will boost their confidence. Parents can help children to become better communicators by role-playing conversations with them. Borba says, “Having a parent show them how to respond and interact in these situations is much more effective than telling them what to say.”

Most important, when your child is speaking, really listen. Give the child your undivided attention; don’t check your phone or email or appear distracted. Echo back what the child said to ensure you are hearing them correctly. Many introverts struggle to express their feelings, so let them know you understand it can be hard to speak up and you appreciate them sharing their thoughts with you.

Brace yourselves, This Is Us fans. You’re about to have to face some cold, hard facts. Because not only will This Is Us be ending one day, that day has also already been filmed (at least in part).

And you can't ask series star Chrissy Metz to spill the beans about who’s left standing at the end, because her lips are sealed.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Metz revealed, “So, they’ve banked a couple of scenes for the series finale.”

When pressed by Fallon for details, though, Metz refused to cave. “Who knows if I was in them?” she teased. “I mean, I might have been around the set. I don’t know if I was in the scenes. Do with that what you will.”

Undeterred, Fallon tried one more time to trick the information out of Metz. Alas, she’s a fortress of secrets. “I can’t tell you!” she reiterated, laughing.

Hey, at least he tried, right? Metz was a formidable foe (and can we just gush for a minute about how pure and precious she is too?!).

Given we’re barely into the third season of NBC’s beloved tearjerker, it feels weird to even be thinking of the show’s eventual end. However, comments made by creator Dan Fogelman earlier this year forced fans to face This Is Us’ mortality.

“We know where it ends, and we have the path for each season of the show,” Fogelman said during a panel discussion in May. “We didn’t want to get stuck. We have the kids and the timelines. I don’t think this show — despite any success it may or may not have — will overstay its welcome.”

And then, he confirmed that, yes, they’ve “already shot pieces of the final scene of the series.”

When the panel moderator questioned whether the rest of the cast knew how the series would ultimately come to a close, Milo Ventimiglia (aka Papa Pearson) replied, “Yeah.”

Ever the jokester, Chris Sullivan quipped, “No. Will someone please tell me after?”

Sterling K. Brown, who wasn’t at the panel but phoned in, gave a hint involving the cryptic “her” he and his oldest daughter were “not ready” to see in last season’s flash-forward.

“There’s a big thing about going to see ‘her.’ It sort of leads to the end game of our show as a whole; not the season per se but the show as a whole,” he said, before cautioning, “Who you think the ‘her’ is, is probably not who the ‘her’ is, but it’s who you’ll see at the end of show.”

Intriguing!

If you now find yourself desperate to find out who’ll be in This Is Us’ final moments while simultaneously wishing it would never end, well, you’re not alone.

Not only has Channing Tatum reportedly moved on with singer Jessie J, but there are now rumors Jenna Dewan is dating Steve Kazee. In April, Tatum and Dewan announced they were splitting after almost nine years of marriage. It was a shock to most everyone, but the former couple made it clear they were staying positive and there were no hard feelings. And now, they're both reportedly moving forward with new romantic partners.

"We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple," Dewan and Tatum wrote in their joint statement released six months ago. "There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible."

Well, they both certainly seem to be living "the most joyous, fulfilled lives... possible." On Tuesday, The Blast reported Dewan is dating Kazee. If you have no idea who Kazee is, allow us to give some background.

In 2012, Kazee took home a Tony for best performance by a leading male actor in a musical for Once. He's also no stranger to TV, and has most recently starred in Shameless, Nashville and Blindspot. Furthermore, he contributed to the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn soundtrack by singing "A Thousand Years" with Christina Perri. He's definitely talented.

Per The Blast, Kazee and Dewan were spotted at Griffith Park's haunted hayride with a group of friends. Here's a photo of them together. The website reports their relationship is new and that Dewan is "extremely excited about the romance." Dewan and Kazee are also reportedly ready to stop hiding their relationship.

A source also spoke with People and claimed the two have "been dating for a couple [of] months and she’s really happy."

On Saturday, Us Weekly reported Dewan was seen kissing a mystery man at the Casamigos Halloween party in Beverly Hills on Friday. At the time, a source told Us, "He’s super handsome. She was introducing him to people in the group." According to Entertainment Tonight, the man she was kissing was Kazee.

Neither Dewan nor Kazee have commented on the dating reports, but if true, they'll most likely come forward on their own terms. All that matters is that Dewan seems happy.

Actual Progress We've Made With Breast Cancer Research in the Past Year

Each October, we're inundated with pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At this stage, it's pretty safe to say most of us are very, very aware of the disease that affects 1 in 8 women in the United States, so naturally, our focus shifts to funding research to prevent and treat breast cancer. But is that research translating into any actual progress?

Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, is hopeful about these new advances in breast cancer medicine.

"From my vantage point as an advocate, any technological advancement that can get more women through the door and screened with the most proven and advanced technology out there is great news for women," she tells SheKnows. "This, coupled with access to new therapeutics if women are diagnosed, alongside good aftercare, will help get us to a time where we can prevent death from breast cancer."

Here are a few of the innovations in breast cancer-prevention and treatment we've made in the past year.

Next generation of 3-D mammography

Along with self-exams, mammograms are one of our first lines of defense against breast cancer, so it makes sense that the technology behind the imaging is constantly improving. One example of this is the Hologic’s 3Dimensions Mammography System, which provides faster, higher-resolution 3-D images for radiologists and a more comfortable mammography experience, with low-dose options for patients.

MemorialCare Breast Center in Laguna Hills, California, part of MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center, is first on the West Coast to install this system.

“We’re excited to study this first-of-its-kind imaging device along with other new advanced technologies as we continually strive to offer our patients the best breast care possible,” Dr. Gary M. Levine, medical director of MemorialCare Breast Centers, said in a statement emailed to SheKnows.

AeroForm remote-controlled tissue expander

AeroForm tissue expander

After having a mastectomy, some breast cancer survivors opt to have breast reconstruction surgery. But before anything is implanted or reconstructed, tissue expanders must be used in order to stretch the breast tissue over the chest wall.

For the past 40 years, the standard procedure has been making weekly trips to the doctor's office so they can inject saline via a needle into a temporary expander. Recently, the FDA has cleared another way to do this, using the AeroForm, a needle-free and patient-controlled tissue expansion device that operates via a wireless handheld "smart expander" placed under the chest muscle.

Dr. Tracey H. Stokes, a board-certified plastic surgeon from Fort Lauderdale, opted to use AeroForm for her own reconstruction after having breast cancer.

"AeroForm tissue expanders have revolutionized the tissue-expansion process and allow women undergoing breast reconstruction the comfort, convenience and control to carry out their reconstruction on their own terms," she tells SheKnows.

Therapy for metastatic breast cancer patients

There is still no cure for metastatic breast cancer, but we are making progress in terms of life-extension. In fact, the FDA approved two treatment regimens involving the drug Kisqali (ribociclib). The first is for pre/perimenopausal or postmenopausal women with HR-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer and will be used as the first endocrine-based therapy for these patients.

The second is Kisqali in combination with fulvestrant to treat postmenopausal women who have HR-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer, as the initial endocrine therapy after their disease progresses.

Clinical trials involving both versions had better progression-free survival outcomes than trials involving a placebo.

Vitamin D could decrease breast cancer risk

According to a study conducted by The North American Menopause Society and published in Menopause, the journal of NAMS, women with low levels of vitamin D after menopause may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. Moreover, vitamin D may play a role in controlling breast cancer cells or stopping them from growing, Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, the executive director of NAMS, told Menopause.

So, eat plenty of vitamin-D-rich foods and get out in the sunshine (with proper SPF, of course).

We still have a long way to go in terms of getting breast cancer under control, but it's promising to know that some progress is being made — hopefully, with more to come.

1. Little Evil

Starring Adam Scott, Little Evil puts a wry, comedic lens on the horror archetype of the "demonic child" (as seen in classics like The Bad Seed or The Omen) and does it to great effect. It follows new stepdad Gary as he tries to connect with his stepson, Lucas, even though Lucas loves to dress like a miniature Angus Young and do weird things like draw with all the lights off or use his sock puppet to communicate with the static-filled TV. Gary begins to slowly get more and more unnerved by Lucas, who always seems to be nearby when truly horrific things happen to people like his teacher at school. Is Lucas just a quirky kid or, as Gary suspects, is there something sinister at work within him? Fully focused on pulling the funny out of this very standard setup, Little Evil will have you laughing while bracing for the scary turns the story takes.

2. The Vault

While The Vault begins as a traditional bank heist movie, it quickly turns into a shocking little horror film, taking you on a twisty, dark ride that you never would have suspected the minute the opening credits finish. In The Vault, sisters Vee and Leah extensively plan a bank heist in order to get their brother out of financial trouble. Midway through their heist, as they attempt to loot the vault in the basement of the bank, the sisters and their team discover that there's more than money locked away in that vault — and it's best if it stays that way.

3. The Eyes of My Mother

Are killers born, or are they made? In The Eyes of My Mother, that conversation is given a fresh perspective and done so well it will leave your stomach churning. This gorgeous black-and-white film follows Francisca, the daughter of a female surgeon who taught her about human anatomy to such great lengths that when Francisca is older (and motherless) and faced with threatening forces to her family farm, she takes matters into her own hands. How Francisca deals with predatory men, wayward travelers and even her emotionally distant father is so quietly horrific and treated as if it's not scary at all that you may want to sleep with the lights on.

4. The Stepford Wives

While a more modern version of  The Stepford Wives with Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler and Glenn Close exists, it's the original version from 1975 that really leans into the unnerving aspects of this story. A twist on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers idea, wherein the people you know and love aren't exactly who they appear to be, the original Stepford Wives film (released at the height of the second wave of feminism and thus carrying with it deep thematic ties to women's liberation) follows Joanna Eberhart, who moves to the picturesque town of Stepford and quickly discovers that the housewives she befriends are a little... different — and their husbands may have something to do with it. The scares are subtle but the implications of this story, where men control their wives to horrifying effect, will deeply creep you out.

5. It Follows

It Follows is an art house movie with roots in classic horror movies like Nightmare on Elm Street and Invasion of the Body Snatchers but with a look and feel all its own. With music and stillness its main weapons of shock value, this movie takes the traditional formula of a group of teens forced to fight off an invisible monster and turns it on its head with lots of fun twists.

6. Hush

Hush gets creative in its scares as its focused around a non-hearing female protagonist at the center of a traditional home invasion movie in the vein of The Strangers. The film follows Maddie, a deaf writer living alone in a secluded home in the woods, her closest neighbor a healthy spitting distance away. Over the course of one night, an intruder targets her in her home and despite being differently-abled, Maddie is forced to fight back against her attacker.

7. Creep 2

The found-footage style may feel familiar, but the story that makes up the sequel to the mostly predictable Creep will leave you thoroughly intrigued. Telling the story of an indie filmmaker who answers an ad that leads her out to the woods where a rather strange man lives, Creep 2's constantly shifting power dynamics and creepy (yeah, I said it), truly unpredictable ending will have you thinking about it long after the credits roll.

8. The Blair Witch Project

It's a classic and, yes, it's still unconventional. Nearly 20 years on, the found-footage format of The Blair Witch Project still manages to create a sense of dread that leaves you feeling horrified from beginning to end.

9. The Witch

With heavily accented Old English dialogue and a grim New World setting, The Witch's folkloric elements and pervasively ominous vibes only amplify as you watch the story of a family plagued by ill fortune try to survive even as they feel something threateningly supernatural is haunting them.

10. Gerald's Game

When a kinky afternoon involving a woman handcuffed to the bed and her husband trying to reignite their marriage goes horribly awry, the woman must confront her own past demons in order to free herself in every way possible. Adapted from a Stephen King novella of the same name, Gerald's Game is as much about psychological horror as it is the various horrors of literally being chained to your bed.

11. Raw

The coming-of-age narrative gets a supremely gory twist in Raw, a French-language film about a college-age woman who attends veterinary school and comes to terms with a very dark secret about herself and the rest of her family after learning that life on a vegetarian diet isn't all it's cracked up to be.

12. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

The slow pace and the characters' mannered way of speaking may leave you feeling alienated, but the blend of art house and horror leads to a very unsettling conclusion to a story about a young female nurse who arrives at the potentially haunted home of a famed author.

13. The Invitation

Cults, betrayals among friends and maybe the worst possible ending to a dinner party await you in The Invitation. As you begin to watch, you'll likely find yourself thinking, "This is a horror movie?" But just you wait, because the action shifts very quickly from unsettling to full-on horrific.

14. The Babadook

On one level, The Babadook tells a very human story of loss and not letting your sadness turn you into a shadow of your former self. On another, very scary level, The Babadook tells the atmospheric, unnerving tale of a mother and son who seem to be haunted by the deeply unsettling children's storybook monster The Babadook, whose motives are unknown but super-creepy.

How Kids Can Connect With Far-Away Family During the Holidays

$

The holidays can be tough when family lives far away. Nothing beats face-to-face contact, but nowadays, there are so many great ways to keep kids connected with long-distance relatives.

We shouldn't underestimate the importance of keeping those family networks strong, says board-certified psychiatrist Grant Brenner, M.D. "The holidays are challenging for families spread apart over long distances," he told SheKnows. "It's too easy to let the days go by, getting lost in the hectic rush and heady emotions of the holidays, and kind of forget about the people closest to us."

Brenner recommends communicating with loved ones on key days (like Thanksgiving and Christmas) and setting aside more time to talk on days when you aren't celebrating.

Here are some ideas to keep your kids in touch with family who can't be there with you in person during the holidays.

1. A handwritten letter

Sometimes, the traditional methods are the best. "Handwritten letters go a long way in terms of staying connected with long-distance relatives," licensed family therapist Katie Ziskind told SheKnows. "A handwritten letter is super different and much more personal than a typed email. A child can see her grandparent's handwriting and smell their perfume as they open the letter."

If your kids are old enough, encourage them to reply to any letters they receive from family, and it could become part of their lives all year round, not just in the holiday season. Help your kids get excited about the letter-writing process by letting them choose cute children’s stationery from a website like Shutterfly or TinyPrints, get their name or initials printed on them and use monogrammed stickers to add a finishing touch.

2. A fun package

Who doesn't like getting a package through the mail? It doesn't really matter what's inside your "box of love" — what does matter is that your kids have taken the time to put together something special. If you have a few children, let each of them choose a gift for your relative to put inside the box. A personalized holiday decoration or handprint pottery made at a local studio gives your family a keepsake to treasure and helps them feel part of your kids' milestones. Encourage your kids to add festive artwork, photos of medals and special occasions, and copies of any certificates they've received in recent months. It's so much more fun to open than a regular holiday gift.

3. A video call

There are tons of free apps that let you make video calls over the internet, but our favorite for children is Messenger Kids. Besides offering safety features — for example, kids can only chat with contacts preapproved by parents — it has interactive masks, reactions and sound effects that make talking extra fun.

You can use Messenger Kids on a smartphone or tablet. If you're really ambitious, you could hook it up to a TV screen, letting you enjoy simultaneous parties for a truly virtual event. "Set it up so it works well, for example sitting at a table on all sides of the virtual party so you feel like you are all sitting together, and enjoy being close even when you are far away," says Brenner.

4. Recordable storybook

A recordable storybook lets kids share story time with family, even when they can't be there in person. Hallmark offers a great selection of holiday-themed recordable storybooks (featuring music, too) for all ages, including You Light Up Christmas, Great Joy: A Book of Christmas Blessings and the classic The Night Before Christmasas well as books designed specifically for grandparents to read.

This is a great option for a child who doesn't have the patience (or vocabulary) for a video call. Hearing grandma or grandpa's voice reading a bedtime story helps your child feel emotionally connected to them and keeps faraway relatives in their thoughts.

5. A personalized photo album

Personal photo books make a great gift, and the process of putting one together is a fun way to keep long-distance family at the forefront of your kids’ minds over the holiday season. Websites like Mixbook, Picaboo and Snapfish make it easy to design and produce your own photo book on a computer or smartphone. Give your photo book a holiday theme by dressing your kids up in cute festive costumes, or feature your favorite family photos from the past year. You can also add text to the pages of the book, such as personal messages from each child.

Ben & Jerry’s has joined the resistance.

Recently, Ben & Jerry’s launched the limited-time Pecan Resist, a flavor and campaign championing and supporting those fighting to create a more just nation and resisting the current administration's regressive agenda.

As part of the campaign, “Pecan Resist highlights four groups and movements focused on freedom, belonging, community, and justice,” the press release states. The organizations include Color of Change (which aims to create a more human and less hostile world for black people in America), Honor the Earth (which raises awareness and support for indigenous environmental issues), Women’s March (which harnesses the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change) and Neta (one of the fastest-growing independent media platforms led by people of color along the Texas-Mexico border).

But Ben & Jerry’s is doing more than merely highlighting these organizations. They are donating $25,000 to each group and encouraging people to take action on their website. So far, over 1,800 people have signed up to receive updates from the four aforementioned nonprofit profits affiliated with the campaign.

"We couldn't be prouder or more excited to support these four organizations that are doing incredible work every day," says Ben & Jerry's new CEO, Matthew McCarthy, in the release. "Our goal is to use our company's voice, our ice cream, and our activism to encourage all Americans to support and help build these movements which counter the current regressive agenda. We think it's more important now than ever that citizens and businesses alike stand up and be counted."

Ben & Jerry’s teamed up with Bay Area artist and activist Favianna Rodriguez to design the campaign graphics and the pint design.

Pecan Resist

"As an artist, I know well the power of culture and I recognize when a business is using its platform to push for love, justice and a green planet," says Rodriguez — whose art focuses on the intersection of issues including immigration, economic inequality, gender justice and climate change — in the press release. "Let's declare our resistance, march in the streets, and elect a new generation of change makers."

This isn’t the first time Ben & Jerry’s has used its ice cream to promote justice. In 2009, Chubby Hubby became Hubby Hubby to celebrate marriage equality in Vermont. And in 2016, EmpowerMint was launched to promote voting rights.

“Ben & Jerry's feels that it cannot be silent in the face of President Trump's policies that attack and attempt to roll back decades of progress on racial and gender equity, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and refugee and immigrant rights — all issues that have been at the core of the company's social mission for 40 years,” the release states.

Pecan Resist is chocolate ice cream with white and dark fudge chunks, pecans, walnuts and fudge-covered almonds. If you want to join Ben & Jerry’s resistance and support its partner nonprofits, visit its website to order a pint and sign up to stay informed.

McDonald's Is Adding $6 Value Meals to Their Menu (& They Come With Dessert)

Fast food is the food of choice for millions of Americans. According to a 2018 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, 1 out of 3 Americans consume the convenience food every day. If you are a fast-food lover and a fan of McDonald's, we've got good news for you: The hamburger purveyor is rolling out $6 value meals, and each deal will include dessert.

More: Chick-fil-A Is Testing Out Mac & Cheese — & We Are So Stoked

According to a press release, the meal is part of the chain's "ongoing efforts to deliver our guests more craveable and delicious options at a great value."

Guests can choose a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, a Big Mac, a 10-piece McNuggets or a Filet-O-Fish. In addition to receiving said entrée, the $6 meal deal will come with any size soft drink or sweet tea, a small order of fries and an apple or seasonal pie.

(Yum!)

Of course, the deal is welcome news for many, especially parents who are still upset that the Happy Meal is no longer a part of the value menu. (Earlier this month, McDonald's announced they would be removing the kids classic from their discounted lineup to make way for new items.) But the deal also offers nonparents an affordable alternative.

And really, who doesn't want a quick and, more important, complete meal?

The deal will start on Nov. 1; however, if you are hoping to grab one, be sure to do so soon, as the value meal will be available for a limited time only.

Naomi Watts Is Officially the Lead of HBO's Game of Thrones Prequel Series

Arguably the biggest news to come out of the Game of Thrones prequel arrived on Tuesday, with Deadline reporting that Naomi Watts has secured the lead role in the HBO pilot’s ensemble cast. Per the outlet, the Oscar-nominated actor will play a "charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret."

Watts is the first cast member attached to the prequel to be revealed, but per Entertainment Weekly, the series is actively seeking actors for various parts as well as a director.

More: Don't Hold Your Breath for Game of Thrones Season 8 to Premiere in April 2019

What we do know so far, outside Watts’ casting, is that the prequel will be written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, X-Men Days of Future Past) and, naturally, author George R.R Martin.

The show will take place thousands of years prior to the existence of the Game of Thrones characters and the world we know and love. It will cover the world’s descent from the Age of Heroes to the Long Night (a phrase referring to the winter that lasted a generation in the book series). Fans can expect to dive even further into the origin of Westeros and the terrifying White Walkers through this prequel.

Not surprisingly, the prequel's creators are cautioning fans against making any premature assumptions. The reported log line for the show even states that it is "not the story we think we know."

In an interview with Deadline in July, HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, also explained that it would be inaccurate to assume the prequel would cast a female lead to set itself apart from GoT.

More: The Game of Thrones Prequel Is Officially Happening

“There are very strong female characters but it’s an ensemble, there are men and women,” Bloys told Deadline. “Jane [Goldman] is a very good writer, we don’t want to limit her to writing female leads. There are a lot of very complicated leads in [the pilot].”

Although none of those strong leads will come from the original series (sorry, Jon Snow lovers), it’s a safe assumption that many of them will be Lannisters and Starks. After all, the history of these two houses serves as the crux of the entire GoT universe.

6 Secrets to Feeling Less Busy

$

It’s easy to feel like your to-do list is never-ending. As women, we tend to overbook ourselves because we want to please people or we simply don’t want to turn an opportunity down. It's OK to be overachieving if you are handling your busyness in the right way.

You can be busy as long as you don't feel busy. That busy feeling just leads to stress — and to getting less done as you obsess over how busy you are. If you know how to schedule yourself and how to take a break every once in a while, you can get tons of stuff done without the stress.

Here are a few tips for cutting down on the overwhelming feeling that comes with being a busy person.

1. Accept that you won’t always be able to get everything done

Balancing a career, a family, exercise, friendships, various hobbies, self-care and much-needed relaxation comes at a price. You must accept that while you hope to get it all done, sometimes, you just can’t. And that’s OK. Be realistic with your time and your expectations. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Feeling like everything needs to get done will lead you to rush, causing sensory overload and stressed, "Oh, my gosh. I'm so busy" vibes. Just don't go there.

More: My Coworker Is Trying to Sabotage Me — & I Need Help

2. Always give yourself extra time to complete a task

Regardless of how long you think it will take you to do something, plan for it to take a little longer. Consider this additional time as a backup plan in case you get distracted or have to attend to an unexpected issue that can’t wait until later. This way, even if you “get behind,” you’ll complete your work. And scheduling more time for yourself will cause you to cut down on the tasks you take on, leading you to feel way less crammed for time and way less busy. More on this later.

3. Do things you actually enjoy

We tend to feel overwhelmingly busy when we have a lot of things to do that we don’t enjoy. When was the last time you felt stressed-out because you set aside an entire day to treat yourself? Exactly. While we probably always have to do work tasks that we don’t enjoy doing, try to break your day up by giving yourself a few tasks you can look forward to (i.e., volunteering, spending time with your family, reading your book, etc.). This will not only brighten your mood, but will help your day go by faster and make your to-do list feel a lot less daunting. Plus, you'll feel like your day is meaningful rather than feeling like it's packed with busywork.

More: 7 Decisions People Make About You in Less Than 30 Seconds

4. Limit your to-do list

When you have 5 million items on your to-do list, it’s easy to get flustered and feel like you’ll never finish (because you probably won’t!). Try to make two separate to-do lists: one for today, and one for another day. Prioritize the activities you need to complete in the next 24 hours, and don’t allow your mind to focus on all the things you need to do tomorrow. Focus only on the items you need to do right now.

5. Stop doing things you don’t actually have to do

We all get into the habit of checking items off other people’s to-do lists. While it’s great to do things for other people if you enjoy it and you have time, you don’t always have time. If you’re feeling too busy, let your husband, your children, your boss or your coworkers complete their own tasks. For example, if you’re the only person who makes the coffee at work, let someone else do it for a change. Or if you’re always cleaning up after your kids, have them help you out. Don’t be afraid to delegate, whether you’re at work or at home.

6. Dedicate time to relaxation (& actually spend that time relaxing!)

We tend to spend our dedicated relaxation time doing things that aren’t so relaxing. If you’ve scheduled an hour alone to yourself after dinner, don’t spend that time replying to emails or planning tomorrow’s itinerary or worrying about how busy you’ll be the following day. Spend that time doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing: relaxing. If you’re crazy-busy, give yourself an hour or two when you have absolutely nothing to do. That'll make you feel less busy quick as can be.

This Is Us Honors Its 'Hometown' of Pittsburgh Following Synagogue Tragedy

In the wake of the tragic shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood, NBC’s This Is Us paid tribute to its “hometown,” since a majority of the show is set within the city. The end of Tuesday’s episode, "Kamsahamnida," closed with a special message card expressing sadness over the senseless act that claimed 11 lives and injured six on Saturday.

More: This Is Us Season 3 Will Bring Back This Mysterious Character

“Our hearts are broken. We stand with our television hometown of Pittsburgh. To learn more about ending gun violence, visit everytown.org,” the message read.

Several members of the cast subsequently shared a screenshot of the message, adding their own personal message. Mandy Moore, who plays family matriarch Rebecca Pearson on the series, wrote, “We [heart emoji] you, Pittsburgh. #PittsburghStrong @Everytown.”

Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Beth Pearson, tweeted out a succinct message: “To learn more about ending gun violence, please visit everytown.org @everytown #ThisIsUs.”

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman shared the end card along with a tweet reading, “Pittsburgh is our #ThisIsUs hometown. If you’d like to donate to Victims of Terror Fund to support the Pittsburgh community, please text: JEWISHPGH to 41444.”

Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin Pearson, shared Fogelman’s tweet, urging followers to text JEWISHPGH to 41444 and saying he was “texting now.”

On the show, the present-day Pearson clan splits their time between Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia, but in flashbacks, we see the show is still deeply rooted in Pittsburgh culture —and that has a lot to do with Fogelman. In 2016, Fogelman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that a personal connection inspired him to choose Pittsburgh as the backdrop for the formative years of Jack, Rebecca and the Big Three.

“I wanted to do something that reminded me of where I grew up. We pulled out pictures of Bethel Park and those areas surrounding it and as we extend their world a little bit, it will be what it feels like,” Fogelman said of the area he grew up in until around the age of 7.

Throughout the show’s history, it has paid tribute to Pittsburgh, from a Steelers’ Super Bowl to a strategically placed Steelers’ towel in an early scene with Rebecca and Jack.

The SheKnows & StyleCaster Editors Tell Us Which Scary Movies They Love

$

"What's your favorite scary movie?" is not only an iconic line from arguably one of the best horror movies of the last 25 years (1996's Scream), but it's also a question that I, Allie Gemmill, freelance assistant entertainment editor here at SheKnows, wanted to pose to my fellow SheKnows and StyleCaster editors, because I'm a horror movie fan who loves to hear what horror movies folks are into!

More: I Avoided Horror Movies for Most of My Life — Here's What Happened When I Changed That

For me, one of the best scary movies of all time is 2008's Paranormal Activity. Not only is it a found-footage film, which adds another layer of legitimacy to it that makes the scares feel extra-spooky, but it also reinvents the haunted house story we see time and time again in horror. Who doesn't want to watch something that feels different yet still familiar enough that it's easy to get into?

And so, without further ado, here's what the rest of the team told me when I asked them what they're favorite scary movie is.

Kenzie Mastroe (lifestyle editor, SheKnows)

"Dark Skies. Aliens legitimately terrify me, and Dark Skies is one of the most underrated alien movies of all time. It's suspenseful, has great characters and is spooky without being gory."

Amelia Edelman (senior parenting editor, SheKnows)

"Psycho. I can handle Hitchcock, but pretty much nothing scarier than that! I like old scary movies because I can convince myself it's not going to happen to me. If any scary movie at all resembles my life or house or neighborhood, later on I'm like, 'OMG, there's someone in my car. I know it!"

Elizabeth Yuko (health & sex editor, SheKnows)

"I'm not really a horror movie person, so I'll go with my least-favorite scary movie: 27 Dresses. The idea of having to be a bridesmaid 27 times sends shivers down my spine, but what's truly terrifying about the movie is how it perpetuates the idea of romantic love as the ultimate — and only — happy ending for women."

Alana Altmann (senior entertainment editor, SheKnows)

"Scream. This is a horror flick even casual fans and skeptics of the genre can get behind. Not only does Scream serve up solid scares, it’s a teen movie, comedy, slasher and satire all rolled into one deliciously ‘90s package. Bottom line: Drew Barrymore, ribbed V-necks and movies about high schoolers being chased by a masked serial killer are pretty much timeless."

Jason Pham (entertainment editor, StyleCaster)

"It (1990). I credit this movie to my fear of clowns. I first watched it on TV when I was in the third grade, and I remember I had nightmares for months. There were a couple of scenes that replayed in my mind: when It is in the library, and his balloon pops, and blood splatters everywhere; when the bathroom floods with blood; and of course, when It lures a little boy into the sewer and kills him. Even now, I can’t think of the movie before I sleep. Otherwise, I’ll imagine It in the corner of my room or in my closet. The 2017 remake was scary, but nothing compares to the original."

Jane Asher (social media & content marketing manager, StyleCaster)

"My favorite scary movie of all time is The Shining. I never considered myself a scary movie person, so I was surprised by how much I liked this movie. The psychological nature of the thriller kept me on the edge of my seat instead of hiding behind my hands, plus this movie isn’t just another horror flick, it’s an iconic film with what I think is one of the most famous one-liners of all time, 'Hereeeeee’s Johnny!!'"

More: The 12 Scariest Movies You Can Stream Right Now

And finally, because scary movies not only thrill us but have the capacity to imprint on us in ways that we will forever never want to watch them again, consider this response from daytime copy editor Heather Barnett, who first told me she doesn't like scary movies at all. When I asked her if there was a scary movie she watched that totally turned her off for good, she replied with the following (and honestly, I totally get it):

Heather Barnett (daytime copy editor, SheKnows)

"The Exorcist. When I was little, I was brushing my teeth, and my parents made me keep the door closed because they were watching Exorcist. I decided to peek out the door to see what the big deal was — right at the time of the iconic pea soup scene. I was so scared, I had trouble sleeping for days and kept waking my parents up. Finally, I confessed what I’d done, and they said that’s why they told me to close the door. They tried to explain it was fake, but I still never wanted to watch a horror movie again. When my S.O. watches them, I make him wait until I go to sleep."

Most new parents are understandably exhausted — especially if they're already taking care of their new baby's older siblings. But Joanna Gaines says giving birth to her fifth child (an adorable boy named Crew) actually gave her "an extra kick in her step."

"It woke me up a little bit. Life was doing its thing, and this baby — typically you feel tired, but this baby, he’s just like my second wind," Gaines told People.

As Gaines told People, the book will include photos of her own farmhouse in addition to homebody-approved spaces she's designed throughout her career. If you're having doubts about your own ability to transform your home into the stuff of Fixer Upper dreams, don't worry — Gaines totally has faith in you.

"I love the way that I had to learn with trial and error," she said. "That’s why I really believe people can do this."

All in all, Gaines says life has never been better, both at home and in her career. (Well, the two are technically related, but you get the gist.) "We are just really enjoying this sweet season with a newborn and going to the office every day doing the things that we love," she said.

We're happy Gaines has more energy as she adjusts to life with a fifth child, but also, uh, admittedly a little jealous. Joanna Gaines is truly one of a kind.

This Woman Survived a Heart Attack While 7 Months Pregnant With Twins

When a person gets pregnant, they likely expect the usual bloating, aches and general discomfort for several months. But when Eliz Greene was seven months pregnant with twins, she wasn't expecting to have a heart attack.

Greene was 35 at the time and at the hospital on bed rest because of being in preterm labor, she tells SheKnows.

“Because I was on bed rest and was laying down all the time, including when I ate, I had heartburn all the time,” she explains. But when a burning pain her chest started and got intense very quickly, resulting in her vomiting, she knew something was wrong.

More: Knowing the Signs of Cardiac Arrest or a Heart Attack in Women Could Save a Life

Fortunately, she was already in the hospital, so she called the nurse and immediately got the attention she needed. Even so, Greene's heart stopped beating, and she was unconscious for 10 minutes before her medical team was able to restart her heart using a defibrillator. Ultimately, she ended up having triple-bypass surgery and a caesarean section to delivery her twin daughters on the same day.

The twins were born seven weeks early, but now, they're almost 18 years old and healthy, she notes. Since her heart attack, in addition to being a mother, Greene has focused on two areas: not having a second heart attack and educating other people on cardiovascular health.

“Early on, there was a lot of uncertainty in my health,” Greene explains. “What happened to me is rare but not unheard of, but there wasn’t a lot out there on what my future would look like. I came out knowing I had this second chance to be a family, be part of parenting my girls and watching them grow, so I’ve been really dedicated that I can control for having a second heart attack.”

In the nearly 18 years since her heart attack, Greene thinks we've come a long way toward understanding the risk of heart disease, especially in women.

“Now, most women understand that heart disease is their No. 1 health concern,” she explains, referring to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistic that heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. “In all likelihood, that’s going to be what most women die from. We would like to delay heart disease as long as we can.”

To help accomplish this, Greene has teamed up with the Take Cholesterol to Heart initiative, which encourages people to learn more about a heart-healthy lifestyle.

More: Yes, Young Women Can Have Heart Attacks Too

“One of the things I find so valuable about this campaign is giving people both the motivation to really have a candid conversation with their doctors and the tools to help them do it,” she says.

As far as advice for other women, Greene says it's never too early to start thinking about your cardiovascular health. “Knowing what your numbers are and whether they fall in the normal range is really important in keeping track over time,” she adds.

Ellen DeGeneres Hilariously Parodied The Bachelor for Her 2018 Halloween Show

Ellen DeGeneres is known for her elaborate (and hilarious) Halloween specials. She — or more likely, her crew members — decorate the show's set, and DeGeneres always sports a great costume, as do her guests. And this year is no exception. DeGeneres' 2018 Halloween episode was epic. According to Just Jared, the talk show host transformed into a dental assistant named Kelllly D. from New Jersey for an outrageous spoof episode of The Bachelor.

More: The SheKnows & StyleCaster Editors Tell Us Which Scary Movies They Love

The special episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs Oct. 31; however, the sketch made its way online early. And while the spot began like any episode of The Bachelor, we quickly learned it was anything but when a busty, blond DeGeneres appears on-screen.

“I came here for two things," DeGeneres (aka Kelllly) said. "To get a man, that’s one. And to drink tequila. A lot of tequila."

But that's not the best part. DeGeneres was then joined onstage by "Bachelor" Milo Ventimiglia — who you may or may not know from This Is Us.

“My name is Kelllly D. but you can call me anytime you want," an in-character DeGeneres said to Ventimiglia. "I’m a dental assistant. Would you like me to examine your mouth with my tongue?”

Real former Bachelor leading man Nick Viall also made a cameo, because, as Kelllly said, "I want to get picked by a Bachelor, but I thought if I had two Bachelors here, I'd increase the odds."

(Oh, and did I mention Viall was shirtless and there was a hot tub involved?!)

Ashley Iaconetti Reveals She'll Recite Her Own Vows, & Yes, There Will Be Tears

While the idea that Ashley Iaconetti might cry about something should come as a surprise to roughly no one, the former Bachelor in Paradise contestant has a good reason to get emotional looming on the horizon. During an interview with People TV’s Chatter, Iaconetti opened up about her impending wedding to Jared Haibon — and how realistic she is about the tears that will be shed.

“I definitely will be crying through my vows whether I write them or not, but I think the plan right now is that we’re going to write them,” the soon-to-be bride said, admitting, “I have to read from the paper. Who can memorize their own vows and then be up and there and be emotional?”

More: This Bachelor Nation Alum Will Officiate Ashley Iaconetti & Jared Haibon's Wedding

Iaconetti is self-aware when it comes to her propensity for waterworks, so she realizes saying I do will likely trigger a tear-soaked response.

“I can’t imagine myself being dry-eyed while reading my own vows,” she said.

But fans of the reality dating franchise that introduced Iaconetti and Haibon to the world won’t be privy to any public displays of emotion. According to Iaconetti, the couple has ruled out a televised wedding.

“Bachelor never formally asked us if we wanted to get married on the show, but Paradise was probably our only option if we decided to get married on screen,” Iaconetti said, elaborating, “We decided not to do that just because we wanted to have a bigger wedding. When the show is in charge of it they have a lot of guest requests and you have to narrow your list down.”

A BiP wedding would have been kind of perfect, though, right?

Iaconetti and Haibon first became romantic in Paradise, although that dalliance did not end well. But it formed the basis of a friendship that would stand the test of time and, eventually, grow into love.

And, hey, at least a part of Bachelor Nation will live on through their officiant: Tanner Tolbert.

The couple hasn’t revealed their bridal party (although Iaconetti has hinted Jade Roper and Carly Evans could be involved), citing timing for the secrecy. “We have not even told our bridal parties who they are, so we’re going to keep that secret for right now,” Iaconetti explained.

Also not on the table for discussion yet? The honeymoon. However, the couple isn’t nearly as buttoned-up about another possible “moon” in the near future — a babymoon.

In July, Haibon joked, “We’re engaged now, so we’ll get to the wedding and then maybe pop out a couple kids!”

Prince Harry is turning his childhood tragedy into an opportunity to help others. During a visit to New Zealand, the Duke of Sussex, who lost his own mom at age 12, comforted a 6-year-old boy whose mom died when he was a baby.

Otia Nante's grandmother, Te Nante, told Harry that Otia looks up to him and even wrote him a letter. So the dad-to-be made sure to take a few minutes to give little Otia some words of hope and encouragement.

He also told Otia grandparents are incredibly important and even took a moment to assure Nante that she's doing a wonderful job. "You’re doing a great job, Nan," Harry told her. "Nans are so important in our lives."
