In Charlize Theron's next role, she plays a controversial morning news anchor who keeps making headlines herself: Megyn Kelly. On Friday, the first photos of Theron as Kelly emerged, and the resemblance is so strong Theron is nearly unrecognizable.

More: NBC Reportedly Cancels Megyn Kelly Today After Blackface Backlash

According to Entertainment Tonight, two photos were released from Theron's upcoming film. In one, she wears a white T-shirt and jeans with long blond hair curled in exactly the way Kelly used to wear her hair before cutting it. In another photo, Theron wears a black dress and boasts a shorter haircut more reminiscent of Kelly's time on her Fox News show, The Kelly Files.

Theron's new film is still untitled, but Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph penned the script and Jay Roach will direct. Per ET, the film explores the points of view of women at Fox — including Kelly — who spoke up about abuses endured at the hands of former CEO and chairman Roger Ailes. According to Vanity Fair, Ailes was removed from his position in 2016, when former anchor Gretchen Carlson sued him for sexual harassment.

ET reports that Theron will star alongside Nicole Kidman, who will play Carlson, as well as John Lithgow, who will play Ailes. Also slated to costar: Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Alice Eve and Kate McKinnon. The project is currently in production, and there is no word on when it is expected to hit theaters.

Last week, Kelly was fired from NBC and had her show canceled after she questioned whether dressing in blackface for Halloween was offensive. Ironically, as noted by ET and other publications, Theron's photos surfaced on the same day.

The Unexpected Challenges of Sex During Your Period & How to Deal With Them

$

Period sex: You either love and embrace it or you hate and avoid it, but it doesn't have to be that way. There's definitely a correlation between menstruation and libido — hormonal changes can intensify sexual appetite, and orgasms can actually assuage period cramps (thanks to a release of dopamine, oxytocin and other pain-killing endorphins). And because vagina-owners excrete so much fluid while shedding the uterus, that extra lubrication can make vaginal sex go a lot smoother too.

Getting intimate during menstruation is also becoming less taboo as it’s evermore embraced in the mass media that largely touts its allure. But if you’re not comfortable with it, you’re not alone — and that is totally acceptable and normal too. Many people face a whole host of intimacy challenges during menstruation that can certainly decrease desire.

If, however, you want to give period sex a try or are looking to get a bit more comfortable with it, here’s how to overcome three intimacy challenges that may arise.

1. Period sex can feel "unclean"

Many religious texts suggest menstruation is “unclean” or “impure,” and that text has leaked into our modern psychological perceptions of menstruation according to Jenni Skyler, a sex therapist, sexologist and licensed marriage and family therapist for Adam & Eve.

“Though physically and biologically, there is no need to abstain from contact, human behavior often stems from religious history,” Skyler explains. “Most of the world's major religions have perceived menstruation problematically: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and even aspects of Buddhism. Some advocate for women to be fully removed during this entire menstrual window [or] qualify the experience as ‘unclean’; all include language that describes the menstruation experience as ‘impure.’”

To be clear, there is nothing unclean about your period or having sex during it. But if this is something you're concerned about, there are ways around it.

“A shower can offer sensual foreplay and the opportunity to clean up,” Skyler says. “The entire erotic experience can stay in the shower if that’s the comfort level of the couple… If you are worried about the mess, put a towel on the bed — you can even buy a whole towel set and use the hand-cloth on the side for additional wiping if needed.”

There is also a new product called Shark Week Sheets that's in development right now that you can stick on top of your sheets to keep them blood stain-free.

Dr. Kim Culwell, aka "Dr. Lady Doctor," a board-certified and fellowship-trained OB-GYN who has worked with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and as a medical officer with Planned Parenthood, also recommends simple menstrual cups or discs that don’t dangle down into the vagina.

More: Meet the Product Changing Period Sex Forever

“Practice taking the cup in and out a few times before you have sex so you are comfortable with it,” she says. “Most cups can be left in for 12 hours depending on the amount of menstrual flow you have, but you’ll want to make sure you know how long you can leave a cup in without having any issues with leakage before you try it during sex for the first time.”

2. Period sex can feel awkward

Just before and during menstruation, many vagina-owners will experience bloating that results from changes in levels of sex hormones progesterone and estrogen. A lot of bloating is caused by water retention during this time. Some people may also experience acne breakouts both before and during their periods. And women and femmes have been conditioned to feel shame about their bodies and skin impurities for as long as time — so it’s no wonder many might experience a lack of self-confidence during their periods.

More: Here's Why Your Sex Drive Spikes During Your Period

“Women are taught from an early age to feel shame about their bodies and bodily functions, so the messiness of period sex can also make women want to avoid sex during this time,” Culwell explains. “Some women also experience a change in vaginal odor during menstruation as blood increases the pH of the vagina, which can lead to increased likelihood of bacterial vaginosis just after menstruation.”

Bacterial vaginosis is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina that can cause it to swell, itch burn and secrete discharge and odors, all of which can make sex uncomfortable too.

And, of course, with a lack of confidence can come feelings of awkwardness during intimacy. Culwell says to remember that everyone is different when it comes to sexual and reproductive health, and that’s OK.

“What we like, don’t like and feel comfortable with varies… That’s what makes sex so interesting and exciting,” she says. “Don’t ever feel pressured to do anything sexually that you don’t want to do.”

3. Period sex can feel painful

A lot of changes happen to the body during menstruation that can make sex feel physically different for some people as well.

For example, a local increase in the hormone prostaglandin causes bloating and swelling of the pelvic organs, including the uterus and cervix, which can change the position of the cervix in the vagina according to Culwell.

“Depending on a [person’s] individual anatomy, that change in position of the cervix could make sex more pleasurable and more likely to lead to orgasm or make sex actually painful,” she explains.

This increase in prostaglandin is also what makes some women have changes in their bowel patterns (such as diarrhea) during their periods, she adds, noting that gas pains can also be uncomfortable.

“Communication is key,” Culwell suggests. “Both partners need to be comfortable with the potential messiness and/or changes in sensation that might occur. If sex is painful because of anatomic or hormonal changes, you need to be empowered to speak up and stop. This is true about sex at any time — in order for both partners to feel safe, there has to be communication, trust and honesty.”

Skyler adds that if orgasm is the intention, it doesn’t necessarily require penetration that may be causing the discomfort either.

“An orgasm can be achieved through manual stimulation on the clitoris — with a tampon still inserted if needed. It can be accessed through oral sex, and it certainly can be achieved with a sex toy,” she adds. Yes, oral sex can be a fun option if you and your partner are into it.

There is absolutely no shame in enjoying period sex or in wanting to avoid it. It's also totally fine to be ambivalent about the whole thing if it's not a big deal to you one way or another. But for those who may find it tricky, we hope these tips will help you give it another try — if you want to.

Chicago West Just Made Her Modeling Debut — With Mom Kim Kardashian West

Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West's third child, Chicago West, just made her modeling debut on Friday, people. Thank goodness. We think it's high time Chicago starts earning her Kardashian keep, the little slacker. She's 9 months old already — those good looks aren't gonna last forever, kid.

MoreUm, North West Will Wear Kim Kardashian West's Met Gala Dress — to Prom?

Her modeling debut was facilitated by her mom, the founder of KKW Beauty cosmetics. On Instagram, Kardashian West posted a topless shot of herself with Chicago, her "heavenly baby." She added, "Showing off the new pink shadows in the Flashing Lights Collection wearing Flashy and High Key available at KKWbeauty.com."

In the photo, Kardashian West is sporting metallic pants and matching metallic eyelids, while the adorable Chicago appears to be asleep (or at least very Zen) in her lap.

This was no amateur gig, either; Kardashian West tagged photographer David LaChapelle and her glamour team of Chris Appleton and Sam Visser in the post.

Of course, Chicago's siblings (and aunt Kendall Jenner) are already in on the modeling game. Her big sister, North West, posed for the cover of Interview with their famous mom in 2017 and has modeled for Fendi's Me and My Peekaboo ad campaign — along with grandma Kris Jenner and Kardashian West. North has also modeled for Harper's Bazaar with little brother Saint West and their dad — head of Yeezy design — in August. Oh, and then there was North's runway stroll in September for LOL Surprise! in California.

Hey, what did you expect for the Kimye offspring? A rapper/fashion designer dad and fashionista mom are not exactly camera-shy — and neither, it seems, are their kids.

Amy Schumer Keeps Getting the Most Absurd Question About Her Pregnancy

Actor Amy Schumer is as irreverent as ever — and her pregnancy is definitely comedic fodder. Schumer is a full six months out from her due date, but she recently quipped that apparently, inquiring minds must know: "Are you crowning yet?"

On Sunday, Schumer cracked up the crowd with this and other gems at "A Night With Amy Schumer" in New York. The event was a benefit for Liuba Grechen Shirley's congressional campaign, but it was also a chance for Schumer to open up about her first trimester. Schumer kicked off her set by rubbing her tummy and saying simply, "So, I'm pregnant." At one point, she chowed down on takeout mid-performance. #PregnancyGoals

MoreAmy Schumer Announces Pregnancy in the Most Amy Schumer Way Possible

Schumer told the audience that it's been nonstop puking for her. She also said that zipping up jackets had become a challenge and that hormones were making her "incredibly mean" to her husband, chef Chris Fischer, who penned The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook. Nope, we don't know what a beetlebung is either, but we're glad Fischer is whipping up Schumer's weakness (penne alla vodka) at all hours for his pregnant wife.

“I married a chef because I’m a fucking genius,” Schumer said.

Schumer's pregnancy announcement came on Tuesday (on friend and journalist Jessica Yellin's Instagram page). In fact, she announced right after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (that's Harry and Meghan, BTW) made their royal baby announcement. On Sunday, Schumer joked to the audience, “[I]t’s not fun to be pregnant at the same time as Meghan Markle." No, we can't imagine it would be.

Schumer's been poking fun at her pregnant self on social media, and we admit we are kind of digging it. On Instagram, she posted a pic comparing the first trimester to a grotesque crime scene. She captioned it, "First trimester had me like," referring to an image she posted of herself face-down in a bowl at the dinner table. She added, "#soblessed."

Schumer also posted a comic shot of herself with her hands over belly, captioned, "My precious."

Why couldn't we have been pregnant at the same time as Amy Schumer? We have a hunch her relatable (and, frankly, hilarious) candor is going to be serious balm for other newly pregnant women whose pregnancies don't feel like Meghan's (seemingly) dainty gestation. Guess whose bodies Schumer photo-edited her own head and Fischer's upon? We have to think that somewhere in private, Harry and Meghan are cracking up too.

New Data Reveals Which City Is Best for First-Time Home Buyers, & We're Shocked

Buying a home is an important decision. In fact, it is one of the biggest decisions most people make in their adult life. However, a new study is hoping to make the process a little easier, at least for single first-time home buyers.

More: The Unique Design Feature We Spotted in Britney Spears’ Home

The study, conducted by Homes, analyzed data from over 300 U.S. towns and cities. According to the study, the most affordable location is (drumroll, please) Edison, New Jersey. The average mortgage for a one-bedroom home in Edison is just 8.78 percent (or $292) of the median monthly income. Homes also told us about the least affordable city, and this one was a lot less surprising. The least affordable city is New York City, where the typical mortgage is more than 100 percent of one's monthly income. And now we understand why everyone in New York has six roommates.

Other attractive towns include Overland Park, Kansas (8.96 percent of monthly income), Lafayette, Louisiana (10.1 percent), Sterling Heights, Michigan (10.87 percent) and West Palm Beach, Florida (11.15 percent).

Who joins New York at the bottom of the list? A few more surprises, honestly. Detroit, Michigan (100.01 percent), Oxnard, California (99.91 percent), Santa Clara, California (97.89 percent) and Elk Grove, California (93.13 percent) rounded out the bottom five and are the least affordable places for first-time homeowners.

Grant Simmons of Homes hopes this research helps younger Americans better determine where they want to work and live. In a statement, Simmons said, “Key for solo buyers is to consider locations where jobs are plentiful, yet housing costs are still catching up to demand. Many of these areas saw longer-term effects of the great housing recession with slower recovery, yet these areas are still desirable, have benefitted from an improved economy, and are attracting new jobs which allow a fair balance of housing costs to potential income.”

Not everyone is willing to relocate to a more affordable area, but if you happen to also be on the lookout for a new job, it wouldn't hurt to check out job postings in some of these affordable cities.

Nikki Bella Opens Up About Dating After Her Split With John Cena

It's been six months since Nikki Bella and John Cena called off their engagement, which is barely a blip in time compared to the six years they spent as a couple. While Bella may be moving on from their relationship, it doesn't mean she's ready to start dating, despite her twin sister, Brie, attempting to nudge her in that direction.

More: Nikki Bella Might Be Seeking Closure With John Cena in a New Instagram Post

“It feels like, you know, when you get married and the next day people are like, ‘When are you having kids?’ and it’s like, ‘I just got married.’ I feel like it’s the same thing. When you become single, it’s like, ‘Oh, are you dating?!’ ” Bella told People magazine at the WWE Evolution on Sunday. “Honestly, I’m so not interested. I’m just not ready yet.”

She added, “I’m trying to heal, and I’m not healed yet."

However, Brie has done her best to get Nikki back in the dating game. “I did set her up on a blind date,” she admitted during the same interview. According to people, this earned her a glare from her sister. Brie promised, “You’ll see it on Total Bellas, but I got in a lot of trouble.”

We can only imagine what kind of drama that will stir up when Total Bellas returns. In the Total Divas season eight trailer that was released in September, we saw Bella flirt with a younger man, though from her comments, maybe she wasn't that into it.

Bella's comments on her readiness to date also confirm what a source told People earlier this month: “Nikki is not even thinking about dating right now. She’s been so busy working and spending time with her friends and family, it’s not a priority. That being said, if the right guy were to come around, she’s not opposed to it.”

From what we can tell, Bella is focusing on her own happiness right now, which doesn't necessarily mean she needs to be involved with someone romantically. Given how much of her life is lived in the spotlight and how visible her breakup with Cena was, we don't blame her for wanting to take some time before trying romance again.

Meghan Markle's Reunion With an Instagram Fan in New Zealand Is So Sweet

Well, this is the sweetest reunion ever. During the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's royal tour in Auckland, New Zealand, Meghan (née Markle) reunited with a fan she used to talk with on Instagram.

According to New Zealand's 1 News, Hannah Sergel said not only did Meghan used to follow her on Instagram, the duchess used to communicate with Sergel on the social media platform about life. Since becoming part of the royal family, Meghan no longer has social media, but she did make her royal Twitter debut on Monday in a very low-key way.

Based on what Sergel told the news outlet, it sounds like Meghan was very inspiring and pushed the young woman to be the best version of herself. This really is no surprise, especially based on the speech about women's suffrage Meghan gave in New Zealand on Oct. 28.

On Tuesday, while Meghan and Harry passed through the huge crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the royals, Sergel called out to the former Suits star, "It's Hannah! It's Hannah from Instagram!" She was also holding a sign reading, "It's Hannah from Instagram."

It took her a second, but soon enough Meghan realized exactly who Hannah was. As you can watch in the video below shared by Sergel on Twitter, Meghan's mouth dropped open upon seeing Sergel, she ran right over to her, and declared, "Oh my gosh!" She then sweetly asked her, "How are you?"

At the end of the video, Meghan began to speak, but was cut off. That said, it sounded like Meghan said to Sergel, "It's so good to meet you!" This was the first time they had ever met.

In another video captured by New Zealand's 1 News, after Sergel told Meghan it was good to see her, Meghan excitedly told her fan, "It's so good to see you, too!" The two also had quite the embrace and hugged each other before Meghan had to leave.

More: Meghan Markle's Wedding Bouquet Was Nearly Ruined

Sergel chatted with New Zealand's 1 News and said about Meghan, "She said, 'Thank you for getting in touch,' and then she gave me a hug and said she would read my letter that I gave her."

Sergel added, "I was friends with her on Instagram before she had to deactivate her account. We used to have conversations and stuff on there. She would tell me to do well at university and encourage me to be myself. It means the world to me. I am so shaky and flustered. When I first saw her, I cried."

It was so nice of Meghan to take a moment with Sergel. Their interactions, both past and present, show how much Meghan truly cares about people. She really does make the perfect royal.

What Tia Mowry Wants All Parents to Know About Kids With Peanut Allergies

It's never easy being a parent to a child with peanut allergies, but Halloween is especially challenging because candy seems to be everywhere. That's why Tia Mowry — whose 7-year-old son, Cree, is one of the 1.5 million children in the United States with a peanut allergy — wants parents to be especially aware of what their kids are eating.

In fact, she just helped launch the Talking Peanut Allergy campaign, which aims to start a conversation about the challenges that families with a child who has a peanut allergy face.

“I feel like, thank God, [in] my family, we have done a great job at protecting my son from accidental exposure, but that doesn’t take away the worry that I have on a daily basis,” Mowry tells SheKnows.

And Mowry's not alone in her concern. According to the Living With Peanut Allergy Awareness, Attitude and Daily Impact Survey, sponsored by DBV Technologies, 60 percent of parents of children with peanut allergies report that stress caused by their child's allergy is part of their everyday life. Furthermore, almost half (48 percent) are worried about being perceived as overprotective in dealing with their child’s peanut allergy.

Given how many parents of kids with peanut allergies feel judged, Mowry encourages them to speak up and not be afraid to share their story. She says it can also help other parents feel less alone.

More: This Is the Difference Between Food Intolerance & Food Allergies

Mowry is also hoping to reach parents of kids who don't have a peanut allergy.

“I call them, I want to call them, ‘co-protectors,’ which is because we all can be helpful in creating a community where people are aware of children with a peanut allergy,” she explains. “We all can help. The more information that they know, and the more information they have to be educated about it, the better it is for the child, [and] the better it is for the parents.”

Cross-contamination of peanuts, which can leave trace amounts of the allergen, is another concern for Mowry, but she has taught her son the importance of asking about food before eating it.

“I think it’s really important to read the labels and also for your child to be really fully aware of what products contain peanuts or trace amounts,” Mowry says. “My son — he’s really good at it — even if he sees some candy, he’ll know [to ask] ‘OK, Mommy, are these the ones without the peanuts?’ He knows that this one usually has peanuts, but they also know they have another option without peanuts. He knows to ask for that if I’m not around.”

Because Cree was diagnosed when he was 3 years old, it's something Mowry has spoken to him about from an early age.

“I don’t think you’re ever too young to spark up that conversation or to start talking about the dialogue of protecting your family and your child,” she says. “Children are smart — they’re smarter than you know or think.”

The other important part about talking to your kids about having a peanut allergy, Mowry says, is making sure it doesn't make them feel like there's something wrong with them.

“It’s very challenging to have that conversation with your 3-year-old,” she explains. “And for me, even now that he’s 7 — he’s still a kid — the challenge I have is making him not feel less-than — making him not feel different. I don’t want him to feel different in any kind of way, so for me, it’s all about, ‘OK you may not be able to have that, but you can have this.’ So I think that’s the biggest challenge for me.”

Fortunately, Mowry has some tricks up her sleeve to make sure her son feels included during snack time.

“Sunflower butter is the best — we have tubs of that in the house,” she says.” It’s so delicious. It has such a nice creamy texture to it. You can throw it in anything: You can put it in a smoothie. You can make a sandwich out of it. You can put it on some crackers. You can put it on some vegetables… I think those are some fun, great snacks that [ensure] he doesn’t feel less-than in any way.”

Outside the world of peanut allergies, Mowry is keeping busy between her YouTube video series Tia Mowry’s Quick Fix on her channel and a new television show on Netflix called Family Reunion that she’s starring in alongside Loretta Devine.

More: This Keychain Could Save the Lives of People With Food Allergies

But the big question remains: Will there be a Sister, Sister reboot? Mowry says she doesn’t know if that’s happening, but fans of the show can catch the next best thing: a new Lifetime movie coming out on Nov. 21 in which Jackée Harry and Tim Reid (her Sister, Sister costars) play her parents.

Mowry’s other new project is a Christmas movie called A Gingerbread Romance, which premieres Dec. 15 on the Hallmark Channel — and she’s letting us in on a delicious little behind-the-scenes secret.

“It’s like Christmas every day on set, for like 21 days,” Mowry explains. “And actually, the cookies and pies were all real on set. I’m like ‘how did you guys do that?’ It was lovely.” Let’s hope that all proper precautions were taken to prevent accidental peanut exposure in the baked goods.

Time-Outs Are Over — Here's What to Do Instead

The tank engine hit me hard in the side of the head. My husband and I looked at each other, stunned, and my 2-year-old let out a strange laugh we’d never heard before. What just happened to our son? He’d never intentionally hurt anyone before, and now he’s throwing toy trains at us?

“Go to your room!”

The demand shot from my mouth before I was able to even think about it. My shocked toddler dropped to the floor in tears, and I carried him into his room myself.

This was the first and last time I put either of my kids in a time-out.

More: 4 Things Your Toddler Should be Learning at Day Care

As parents, we long to do what’s best for our children. But so many of us are stumbling around in the dark, trying to find our own path amid a barrage of parenting blogs, experts and societal expectations — and all this at a time when we’re seeing increasing levels of parental burnout as we try to take on superhero-like roles.

Child development expert Dr. Deborah MacNamara tells SheKnows that one reason parents lean on separation-based strategies such as time-outs is because “they’re shortcuts when you’re hurried or exhausted, and you don’t spend time looking at the emotional life of a child... we go for the tried-and-true without looking at the harmful effects — and a lot of these are invisible and show up later.”

Despite being doled out with the best of intentions, there is increasing evidence time-outs have the potential to enact lasting damage. According to Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA, time-outs can harm parent-child relationships, reduce a child’s ability to learn empathy and healthy problem-solving and can actually erode behavior in the long-run.

So, why do so many parents continue to use them? Why was banishment my first instinct after my son threw his toy at me?

“It’s simple to say [time-outs are] just about the quick fix,” MacNamara says. “I actually think the deeper answer is that parents... are afraid that if they don’t react in the moment, they’re not doing their job, and their child is not going to turn out OK. If you spoke to the heart of parents, this is the concern. But these are parents who care very deeply.”

More: How to Parent an Extroverted Child

The dilemma in writing this article is that there is no magic technique to replace the time-out. My husband and I did a lot of reading, looking for a "silver bullet" to help with our toddler’s increasingly aggressive outbursts.

What we found instead was just what sent me instinctively rushing into my son’s room after sending him there. Developmental psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld tells SheKnows, “In order to find rest, [our children] cannot be working for our love... To keep us close, they must not think that they have to be good.”

Any response to unwanted behavior needs to honor the child’s inner world, to preserve our relationship with them and to support and guide them until maturity eventually takes over.

This doesn’t mean our only option is to hug our kids after they bite us, however.

Registered psychologist Lindsey Fiebig tells SheKnows that the "time-in" as a behavior strategy preserves our attachment with the child, which is “the cornerstone of parenting.” So instead of banishment, when a child’s behaviors flare up, sit with them — or near them if they need space. Talk them through their emotions. Support them through the waves. Debrief the incident afterward. “They’re learning about their big feelings. You need to emotionally be there for them — you’re their rock in that moment.”

Time-ins help me to remember some truths — the word “time,” to me, means I need to give my son my time and that he will learn in his time. The word “in” helps me remember that he wants to be in my arms, in a relationship with me.

More: The Problem With the "Gifted" Child Diagnosis

Unless you are that family I see at restaurants whose children sit quietly and never lick the dessert display case, these three principles articulated by MacNamara might resonate with you when thinking about your child’s behaviors:

  1. Engage the attachment instincts. This means changing tack when behaviors emerge, even when we’re in a hurry. Getting ready for school and the kid is obstinately pulling each item of winter clothing off? As hard as it is, connect with them. Make it a game. Laugh and engage that relationship. Nine times out of 10 in my house, it’s faster than the power struggle that would have resulted from just pushing forward.
  2. Solicit good intentions. MacNamara also calls this “getting ahead of the problem.” Before an activity that might elicit some behaviors, ask the question, “Can I count on you?” Of course, MacNamara admits, although you’ve asked your preschooler not to throw rocks at the park, temptation can overtake any tiny person. But with this question, you are “dialing in” your expectations and creating a holding place until their executive functioning comes online, sometime between 5 to 7 years old.
  3. Help them find their tears. As parents, we still need to maintain our roles — we need to hold boundaries and lead confidently. Our children cannot wear bare feet in winter. They cannot jump on the dog. They must go to bed within a reasonable time frame. Sometimes, inviting connection and playfulness works. But sometimes, when our children come up against “the things they cannot change,” supporting them as they find their tears can be the most attachment-friendly, developmentally informed way through the strife.

There are no quick fixes. Our children’s brains are designed to develop slowly, and no technique will help them grow up any faster. Our job as parents is to allow our children to rest in our love, not to separate them from us when they need us most. These are the hard but beautiful truths of parenting that I learned in the five minutes between being hit by the train and rushing into my son’s room to hold him.

This Is Us Season 3 Theories About the Pearsons & Beyond, Based on What We’ve Seen

Never a show to shy away from storylines that touch viewers in ways few shows have accomplished, This Is Us in season three is taking viewers to newer, darker, deeper depths with Rebecca, Jack, Kate, Kevin, Randall and their respective significant others as well as children.

While Kate and husband Toby struggle to conceive their first child, Beth and Randall are facing daunting new career paths with Randall running for local government and Beth trying to find herself after getting laid off. Meanwhile, Kevin is exploring a new relationship with Beth's cousin, documentarian Zoe. In the past, we're getting bigger glimpses into Jack's time serving in the Vietnam War, how Rebecca kept her family together shortly after Jack's death and even how these beloved soulmates began their relationship.

There are so many threads to follow, so many big emotional turns that the show has made in just a handful of episodes, and yet we already have some theories based on what we've seen so far about where this show will go. Here's what we came up with.

More: This Is Us Focuses on Jack's Time in Vietnam, Reveals Key Details About Him

1. Rebecca and Jack's trip to California is going to be life-changing

Early in season three, we saw Rebecca and Jack's rocky beginnings, with it becoming very clear that despite these two being near-polar opposites, their attraction to one another was undeniable. At the end of episode three, "Katie's Girls," we see Rebecca turn up at the home of Jack's mother's friend, where his mother found safety from her abusive husband for a while. There, Rebecca helps Jack clean up and get things set up for his mom. During this time, she suggests they go to California.

We've never heard about this trip before, and yet it feels like This Is Us is opening the door for California to be a place where Rebecca and Jack will bond and grow as a couple. California in the '70s was a wild place, in the midst of the third wave of feminism and the aftermath of a pop culture boom of the '60s. Our favorite lovebirds may find themselves challenged and forced to grow in new ways and shake off their old ways of thinking (especially when it comes to parenting).

2. Randall's journey to find his place in the world will take an interesting turn

Randall has always been in search of what his place in the world is. Despite being raised by Jack and Rebecca, who have always made sure to let Randall know just how much they love him, he still struggles with the fact that he’s not only adopted but Black. Growing up, Randall did have a small support system of Black people, and we've seen him regard his Black friends and their families in high school and college with curiosity and longing. Now that he's running for local government in Philadelphia and connecting more deeply with Chi Chi (Yetide Badaki) on neighborhood issues, it's easy to believe that Randall's singular-minded goal of becoming a representative and fixing Chi Chi's neighborhood will potentially allow him to ignore Beth or his family duties. This journey could upend everything in Randall's life if he doesn't figure out how to balance it.

3. The "her" answer is right under our noses

The identity of "her," who we've seen mentioned by older Randall and Tess in the time jump to the future, is perhaps the most hotly debated season three thread now that the mystery around how Jack died is settled. In the time jumps, not only have we seen Randall and Tess prepare to go see "her" (and we also don't know where they're going or why, yet), but it seems that Toby is in on this, too, albeit reluctantly.

With these three in the mix, the strongest "her" candidates are Kate and Beth. Sure, Deja, Annie or Rebecca could be options, too, but given Randall's age, Rebecca may already be dead by this point (don't remind us!), and Deja and Annie don't feel connected to Toby in a way that it would cause him to want to bail on visiting "her." That leads us back to Kate or Beth, who may very well be in a hospital or some kind of care facility with visiting hours. And if that's the case, then we need to watch every little thing Kate and Beth do for the rest of season three to make sure they're safe.

4. Who is the woman wearing Jack's necklace?

Maybe the most tantalizing cliffhanger in a while came at the end of episode five, "Toby." It was there that we saw Kevin receive a letter from Jack's Vietnam buddy, Robinson, that included a photo of Jack standing with a still-unnamed woman who happens to be wearing the necklace Jack wore for protection before passing it along to Kevin.

While it would be wild to wonder whether Jack followed in the footsteps of other American soldiers in Vietnam who fathered children with Vietnamese women (it would certainly take This Is Us into territory wouldn't see coming), it feels likelier that the woman in the photo helped Jack in some crucial way and possibly gave him her necklace for protection (we already know Jack is in the habit of passing along helpful habits, like Robinson's face-cupping trick to calm someone down). This seems to be backed up by the title of the episode, "Kamsahamnida," a Korean word for "thank you" that, given the context, feels tied to Jack in Vietnam.

5. Through Kevin, we'll find out exactly how Nick died

Still of Michael Angarano and Milo Ventimiglia in 'This Is Us'

In episode four, titled "Vietnam," we learn that Jack enlisted to serve in Vietnam so he could be close to his younger brother, Nick (Michael Angarano), who was drafted. As has been shown throughout the show, Jack is very protective and empathetic when it comes to his family, and that includes Nick. But we also know that after Vietnam, Jack carried the weight of his brother's death on his shoulders, with his father commenting that Nick's death is Jack's fault.

With Kevin on a journey to learn more about Jack's time in Vietnam, it feels inevitable that Kevin will be the one to discover exactly how Nick died and just how much Jack was involved. But just going off the fact that we already know Nick is a bit tougher than Jack and willingly went to Vietnam because it was his turn to be Superman, it feels like Nick's death will be shown to be a result of him trying to save Jack during combat.

A Brief History of Pregnant Women Running for Office

The 2018 midterm elections are quickly approaching (mark your calendars for Nov. 6!), and the results could have a significant, long-lasting impact on health care, climate change, immigration, women’s rights and LGBTQ rights. Because of this, record numbers of women have put their names on the ballot, including New York attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout, who is nine months pregnant with her first child and due any day.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zephyr Teachout campaign together in New York.Teachout, a progressive candidate who's been embraced by other left-leaning New Yorkers, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cynthia Nixon, openly admits she never thought she’d run for office while pregnant, especially at 46. And while she wouldn’t have it any other way, she also doesn’t want her pregnancy to define who she is as a candidate.

“Being pregnant does not change the fact that I wrote a book on corruption, or that I sued Donald Trump,” she told Time magazine. “Being pregnant doesn’t change the fact that I’ve been working on these issues for over 15 years. It doesn’t change the fact that I have a unique expertise in [government and business corruption].”

More: 6 People Running for Office Who Have Big Plans for Women's Health

Unfortunately, so many people can’t seem to see past her pregnant belly, something Teachout attributes to outdated cultural norms. “I think it shows, for so long, an unspoken rule that people don’t run while pregnant,” she told Time. “Which certainly has been broken [before], but not very often.”

She’s right; there aren’t many pregnant women in the history of the United States who have braved the campaign trail. The notion of a pregnant woman running for office didn’t even seriously surface until 1994, when Judi Dutcher ran for Minnesota state auditor as a Republican. Her constituents didn’t seem to think she struggled balancing her job with her parenting duties because they overwhelmingly voted to keep her in office in 1998 according to the resource database Our Campaigns. Dutcher would later go on to give Minnesota another shock when she announced her switch to the Democratic Party in 2000 citing her stances on abortion, gun control and LGBTQ rights as the main reasons.

Jane Swift speaks as governor in 2001.The U.S. didn’t see another pregnant candidate until 1998, when Jane Swift, who was 15 weeks pregnant, announced her candidacy for lieutenant governor alongside Republican A. Paul Cellucci in Massachusetts. Like Teachout, Swift quickly grew tired of all the attention her pregnancy, rather than her policy views, received.

More: 12 Empowering Quotes From Key Women Running for Congress in November

“I knew it would be a story. I knew people would be interested,” Swift told the New York Times in 1998. “I did not expect we would be getting involved in a debate as to whether or not women should work when they have children. Even if we’re going to focus on the pregnancy, I wish we could shift the debate to, ‘What, then, do Jane Swift and Paul Cellucci think they can do on daycare and creating more opportunities for flextime and meaningful part-time work? But we really haven’t gotten there yet.”

Swift and Cellucci ultimately won, and when Cellucci stepped down from his position to work in the George W. Bush White House in 2001, according to ABC News, Swift became a woman of many firsts: the youngest governor in the U.S., the first woman governor in Massachusetts and the first governor to give birth while in office. Surely, after seeing her accomplishments, the nation would realize that all parents — not just fathers — were worthy of playing an active role in democracy, right? No such luck.

The next surge of pregnant candidates didn’t take place until earlier this decade. According to The Daily Beast, between 2011 and 2013, four pregnant women — Raquel Batista, Shemia Fagan, Sheila Calko and Mande Wilkes — ran for federal and state office. The women’s experiences were as diverse as their policy views. Opponents attacked Batista, who ran for New York City Council, for being a pregnant single mother and questioned her ability to juggle parenting and politics. Fagan and Calko were praised by their more liberal bases for their ambition and drive. Wilkes, a Republican, ultimately dropped out of the race before the primary and later wrote an article titled, “Four Reasons Why Voting Is for Suckers.” (If I may insert my personal opinion, the piece is trash, and voting is excellent.)

Jennifer Carroll Foy registers voters.

Despite their differences, these women inspired the next generation of pregnant political hopefuls, including Teachout and Jennifer Carroll Foy, who ran for the Virginia House of Delegates while pregnant with twins. Foy gave birth to her sons in 2017, a few months before the election and months before their due date. Because of their condition, the babies were hospitalized throughout the remainder of her campaign. Though it was tough to split her time between the campaign and the hospital, Foy never gave up on her dream and was elected last November.

Women from all over the political spectrum are starting to realize that it’s possible to be both a mother and an elected official. According to the Center for American Women and Politics, 53 women filed to run for U.S. Senate, 476 filed to run for the House, and 61 registered to run for governor for the 2018 election. Hundreds of other women ran for other federal and state offices, making this one of the most exciting years for women on the ballot. Among these women was Kathy Tran, a former refugee from Vietnam who announced her intention to run for a position in the Virginia House of Delegates weeks after giving birth to her fourth child.

Teachout is confident this trend will continue. “We’re on the verge of a big change here,” she told Time. “If women are going to be running their 30s and 40s, they’re going to be running pregnant. You can’t change that.” Though the nation may be politically divided, one thing we can all (hopefully) agree on is that there’s never been a better time for women to rise to power.

The world just got a little bit cuter courtesy of Hilary Duff and boyfriend Matthew Koma. On Monday, the couple shared on Instagram that their brand-new baby girl had officially arrived — and, not surprisingly, she’s precious.

“Banks Violet Bair,” Duff wrote, revealing her daughter’s name for the first time, “this little bit has fully stolen our hearts! She joined our world at home on Thursday afternoon and is absolute magic.”

Duff is a second-time mama — she shares 6-1/2-year-old son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie.

Fans have been on full-alert baby watch mode since June, when Duff and Koma first announced they’d made “a little princess of their own.” The pair has been pretty transparent about their journey, sharing much of it on social media.

In July, Duff noted what a strange yet beautiful dichotomy pregnancy is.

“The boobs are big the belly is big the body is big. Man… pregnancy is hard. Giving love to all mamas who make it look effortless… the journey is hard as hell but also incredibly special,” she wrote, emphasizing, "Women are so bad ass. This was just a note to remind myself and remind others how’s strong and beautiful you are! WE GOT THIS!"

Why Outdoor Time Is Important for Kids When the Weather Cools Down

$

It's easy to spend time outside when the weather is warm and pleasant. Even on those hot summer days, it can be difficult to get your kids to come back inside when they're super busy using their imaginations, expending energy and playing with friends. But once it starts to cool off outside, it can be harder for them to venture outdoors. We get it — you have to wear more clothes and darn it, it's just cold. However, you should still encourage your kids to spend time in the outdoors, and here's why.

It's easy to exercise outside

Kids should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, according to the CDC, and that doesn't change just because it's cold out. While they can get their heart rates up indoors, it's far easier to be physically active outside (and can save your furniture in the process).

"In most weather, children can still safely play and exercise outside; parents just need to ensure they are dressing them with more clothing layers to protect them from the elements," notes Gina Posner, MD, a pediatrician at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center. In other words, while getting outside can be challenging when it's cooler out, make sure your kids wear a warm hat — sherpa hats are extra cozy — and a plush pullover with plenty of pockets, and they'll be good as gold. Dressed them right, and it'll be easy to get the 60 minutes of activity a day that kids need to stay healthy.

Give kids a break from that ever-present tech

Kids are techy from a young age these days, and spending time indoors keeps those devices close at hand (and the temptation to use them can be hard to resist). When the weather gets cooler and wetter, it's even more important to make an effort for your kids to stay physically occupied. Swap out lightweight coats for water-resistant jackets and cozy leggings

"Now, more than any time in history, parents are struggling to find the balance between digital connection and family connection," says Beatrice Tauber Prior, PsyD., a clinical psychologist, author and founder of Harborside Wellbeing. "Time outdoors each day gives children a brain break from the constant buzz of technology. You can regain some family connection time if the whole family spends some time outdoors."

Getting outdoors can keep kids healthier

While it's a common misconception that being outside in the cold can make you or your kids sick, it's known that staying indoors is actually a contributing factor to getting maladies like the flu. According to an article from Harvard, when your kids are inside all the time, they're more likely to breathe in virus-laden air, especially if someone else in the house is sick. Also, when your kids are inside, they're missing out on sunlight, which can decrease their levels of vitamin D and melatonin, which can negatively impact their immune system, making it harder to fight off any viruses they may come into contact with.

Help keep kids calm — later

S. Daniel Ganjian, MD, a pediatric obesity specialist at Providence Saint John's Health Center, explains that kids have far more freedom to exercise outside the house than inside — instead of risking your lamps (and your sanity), kids can toss the ball as high as they want, play tag and ride their bikes. After a session of playing outdoors, Ganjian notes that there's another benefit parents will love. "Such exercise allows children to use their energy in a positive way so that when they are finished exercising, they'll be able to focus better and sit still longer," he says.

Great for the human brain

Yes, exercise is terrific for your child's physical health, but Prior says it benefits their brain function in ways that you might not realize. "All the running, jumping and spinning kids do is also vitally important to help the brain form the connections between neurons (brain cells) that will help children pay attention and concentrate and excel in school," she explains.

Don't let the cold scare you (or your kids) back indoors

While there are certain weather conditions you do not need to be outside for, our experts agree that outdoor playtime can — and should — still be a thing when it's cooler outside. In addition to keeping your breakables safe, Ganjian says, there are other benefits for kids, too: "They like the free space and the crisp cool air." We can't agree more.

Add Ellie Kemper to the Growing List of The Office Stars Down for a Reboot

The saga of a potential reboot of The Office continues to unfold. The latest development? Ellie Kemper would totally be down to revisit Scranton's Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

“I think that would be a lot of fun!” Kemper told E! News of reprising her role as Erin Hannon. “I don’t know if everyone would, so I don’t know if it would ever happen, but I would!”

More: We Talked With Jane Krakowski About Her Womance With Ellie Kemper

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star has nothing but fond memories of her time playing the office receptionist, saying, “It was so cool to play a character that was so excited about everything that was happening to her. She got a fancy job and an office, answering phones, doing her boss’ errands: I think that was a thrill for her. She, sort of like Kimmy, has this wavering enthusiasm for life, which is fun to play.”

It’s been five years in real time since fans last saw Erin, though. So, what might the character be doing if The Office ever did return? “I feel like she’s doing something well and she’s excited to be doing it. Maybe she’s in Chicago,” Kemper mused.

More: Steve Carell Returns to TV in a New Series With Jennifer Aniston & Reese Witherspoon

Of course, despite Kemper’s support for the possibility, a reboot seems unlikely given the recent comments of a key actor in the series: Steve Carell. Earlier in October, Carell told Esquire that he simply didn’t think The Office would translate well.

“[I]t might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago,” Carell said. “The climate’s different.”

He continued, “I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now.”

He’s not without a point either.

In the era of #MeToo and #TimesUp, there’s a growing level of intolerance for the type of inappropriate behavior Michael Scott was famous for. “There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today — which is good, for sure,” Carell noted. “But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”

Having said that, there’s no denying fans still get starry-eyed nostalgic over the idea of a reboot. For that matter, so do other cast members (like Kemper).

In January, Jenna Fischer — who played fan-favorite Pam — told press at the 2018 TCA winter press tour that she certainly wasn’t opposed to returning to the role that made her a household name.

More: How Jenna Fischer & John Krasinski Reacted to The Office Reboot News

“I think the idea of an Office revival is — I think it’s a great idea,” she said. “I would be honored to come back in any way that I’m able to. I loved playing that character, and as long as Greg Daniels is the person in charge and the visionary behind it, then I would absolutely be up for it.”

And in the rare chance the reboot does happen, Pam would be reunited with her coworker-turned-love-interest-turned-husband, Jim. In February, actor John Krasinski said he’d “love to get that gang back together.”

Breastfeeding Reduces Your Cancer Risk — but Most People Don't Know

The decision to breastfeed is a personal one. Not everyone wants to. Not every person is able to. For instance, financial limitations may prevent a new mom from breastfeeding, as many have to return to work early. Medical conditions keep some from breastfeeding. However, breastfeeding offers innumerable health benefits, one of which is a lowered risk of cancer. Yet most people don't know this.

In fact, according to a new study, few people are given this information by their health care provider. But why does this happen?

More: Breastfeeding May Come With Another Bonus: Lowering the Risk of Stroke

The study, conducted by The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center: Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute and published in Breastfeeding Medicine, followed 763 new moms. While the vast majority of the participants in the study did breastfeed (724, to be exact), only 16 percent were informed about the cancer risk-reducing benefits of breastfeeding by their doctor.

According to Dr. Bhuvana Ramaswamy, principal investigator of the study and breast medical oncology division director at the OSUCCC, this is a problem. A huge problem.

“Prevention is the best weapon we have to fight cancer,” Ramaswamy said in a statement. “Not every mother is able to breastfeed, but they should all have the information they need to make the best decision for themselves and their babies.”

Of course, one may wonder if having this information would make any difference. However, 36.4 percent of those who knew about the cancer risk-reducing benefits of breastfeeding said this knowledge directly affected their decision to breastfeed. What's more, of the 39 who did not breastfeed, 23 women (59 percent) responded that awareness would have influenced their decision.

“We have a duty as a medical community to ensure our patients have reliable knowledge,” Ramaswamy said. “And when it comes from a professional, medical information is much more likely to affect people’s choices.”

More: Breastfeeding May Come With Another Added Bonus: Improving Your Baby's Memory

While not all women can or should breastfeed, which is perfectly normal, if a person has the chance to breastfeed, this study offers yet another reason to do so, even if only for a short period of time.

Christina El Moussa & Ant Anstead Celebrate Their One-Year Anniversary

While it was initially difficult to imagine HGTV’s Christina El Moussa with anyone but her costar and former husband, Tarek El Moussa, the Flip or Flop host hit a major milestone with her new love — and she’s not ashamed to get sentimental about it.

So, what was this special occasion? Monday marked one year of dating for El Moussa and her boyfriend, Ant Anstead.

More: Tarek El Moussa Is Happy About Christina El Moussa's Relationship

“If you aren’t in the mood for a sentimental/mushy post I suggest you keep scrolling,” she started her anniversary Instagram post before describing their early days of dating: the first phone call (29 minutes long), FaceTiming two days later for two-and-a-half hours and meeting for the first time two days after that. You might call it a whirlwind romance, but El Moussa refers to it as “#FATE.”

She went on to thank her beau of a year for being who he is.

“@ant_anstead you have showed me what real unconditional love is. You take me for what I am, flawed and a bit crazy, and love all of me just the way I am. You have never once made me feel bad about anything in my past. You put me in my place when I need to be put there. Hold me when I’m having a bad day. I love this life with you. I love our blended family. I can’t wait to see where the next year takes us. I know it’s going to be magical,” El Moussa wrote.

She wrapped up her sappy (but, c’mon, so cute!) post with a quote from her “fav artist,” Elvis: “Wise men say only fools rush in …. But I can’t help falling in love with you.”

Anstead couldn’t resist gushing about El Moussa in turn, posting a collage of photos of the couple along with a sweet message.

“WOW!! ONE YEAR TODAY!!! You answered my phone call! A TWO AND A HALF HOUR FACETIME! I knew then!” Anstead wrote. “Happy anniversary to the single most amazing, beautiful, talented, fun, funny lady on the entire planet! What we have is so RARE!”

Anstead went on to reference the pair’s adventurous year together, saying, “We’ve been to London, South Africa, Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii and all over the US! Serious amount of air miles! You’re the single best travel buddy EVER! From the flat on the face trip overs in Dallas to the police at Buckingham Palace!”

Other highlights of the past year Anstead mentioned include countless sunsets, plenty of Champagne and a charming collection of weird, destinylike moments. Like El Moussa, Anstead also gave a shoutout to the couple’s pseudo-blended family — her kids Taylor and Brayden, whom she shares with Tarek, and Anstead's kids from a previous marriage, Amelie and Archie — in the same post.

In addition to her deepening relationship with Anstead, El Moussa has lots to look forward to in the near future. In June, it was announced that she will be getting her own HGTV series, sans Tarek, titled Christina on the Coast.

More: Christina El Moussa Has a New Solo HGTV Gig

The eight-episode series will focus on El Moussa expanding her design business in Southern California. According to E! News, though, it will also focus on El Moussa’s personal life as she continues to navigate her split from Tarek.

As for whether that includes cameos from Anstead, it remains to be seen — but it seems like a solid possibility.

George Clooney's Halloween Dad Joke Is Relatable AF

George Clooney's going as a dad this Halloween.

The actor and tequila company Casamigos cofounder and his wife, Amal Clooney, are the proud parents of twins Ella and Alexander, born in June 2017. And the grossest horror flick is no match for what Clooney's up against: diapers times two.

MoreAmal Clooney Made a Speech About Husband George Clooney — Prepare to Melt

Clooney joked last weekend about his Halloween costume in a way that is so relatable, we want to hug him. (OK, we've always wanted to hug him, but now we want to hug him more.)

Clooney told Entertainment Tonight, “Last night, [Clooney's close friends, Casamigos cofounders Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford] were dressed up as rock stars, and I was dressed up as a guy cleaning crap out of a baby’s diaper."

Clooney was referring to the first night of the Casamigos' fab two-night Halloween extravaganza, held at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. He stayed home with the twins while his buddies partied without him (#DadLife).

Clooney continued wryly, "It was a fantastic costume. Oh, so much fun, you could imagine the fun I had last night.”

Fear not, fun police: Papa Clooney attended the second night of festivities with a costume upgrade — airline pilot. Gerber also dressed as a pilot, while Crawford rocked the vintage flight attendant look.

Also according to Entertainment Tonight, Gerber and Clooney joked about all the tequila they put back at the party. Said Gerber, "I have a pretty good liver, you?”

Clooney answered, "Getting a new one next week."

MoreHow George Clooney Celebrated Wife Amal's 40th Birthday

But Halloween hasn't always been dad jokes and pilot costumes and tequila shots for Clooney.

"Oh, I’ve done some terrible costumes. I went as a milk carton with my face sticking out the side that said ‘Have you seen this child lately?’ That was a bad one,” he admitted. "I’ve done some terrible ones, but that was 30 years ago. I can’t be held responsible for that.”

Our takeaway? We're jealous of Ella and Alexander, who lucked out with one of the most fun dads ever. We'd also like to be there someday when Clooney tells Ella and Alexander about his most inappropriate Halloween costumes of all time.

Every now and then, a fast-food item so craveable, so savory and so innovative comes out only to disappear a few weeks later, perhaps never to be seen again. Cheesy Tots at Burger King are one such loveable item, and though we've been in an extended period of mourning since they were first pulled from menus, we have great news: They're back!

More: Burger King Is Punching a Hole in the Center of Their Whoppers

For a limited time only, you can grab an order of eight Cheesy Tots at your nearest Burger King. As the name would imply, these are crispy nuggets of potato filled with gooey melted cheese, then coated in breadcrumbs and fried until deliciously golden-brown.

Think of them as the younger sibling of the chain's legendary Mac n' Cheetos. They're similarly crispy, savory and cheesy, but your GI tract will feel a little better after powering through a full order than it would with the Mac n' Cheetos.

This is just the latest in a long string of fun limited-time menu offerings at BK. They have the Nightmare King burger for Halloween and are notorious for items like fiery chicken fries, chicken fries rings and the Angriest Whopper.

More: Burger King's Whopperito should be "Chopped"

That being said, we can totally see Cheesy Tots as a fixture of their menu, so who knows? If we order enough while they're available, maybe someday, they could be a permanent addition. Now that would make us feel like a true fast-food king (or queen!).

It's the spookiest time of year, so we've been daydreaming (or is it daymaring?) about all of the most haunted places we could visit to get our Halloween jollies on. Well, luckily, FlixBus has done all the work for us, collecting information on which cities are the spookiest in the U.S.

More: Halloween Costumes for the Whole Family (Even Grandma)

Their criteria? They looked at cities with the most haunted places (using data from Google, Google Maps, Yelp and TripAdvisor), the spookiest tours and the most Halloween parades. While some of the cities on the list make total sense — Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where an estimated 8,000 people died in battle during the Civil War is on the list, as is the ever-spooky, witchy city of Salem, Massachusetts — others are a bit head-scratching.

For instance, Saint Augustine, Florida, is apparently the second-spookiest city in the U.S., with 70 haunted places, more than 49 spooky tours and seven Halloween parades each year. That haunted places-to-ghost tours ratio seems a little excessive, but hey, who are we to judge? Jersey City, New Jersey, also made the top 10, along with Cincinnati, Ohio, and Des Moines, Iowa.

So, You Need a Breast Biopsy – Now What?

$
0
0

Getting any sort of health-related testing can be nerve-wracking: Odds are that you're fine, but you know there's always a chance of getting bad news. Sometimes, though, the results aren't straightforward. In other words, you might get a call letting you know you need further testing.

This is especially common after a mammogram, when many people are told they need to have a breast biopsy. Yes, it can be scary, but it doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer. We spoke with Dr. Heather Frimmer, a radiologist specializing in breast imaging, about what you should know if you're told you need a breast biopsy.

Why would you need a breast biopsy?

When you go in for your annual mammogram, your radiologist may notice that something new has appeared in the images since your last mammogram. (This is why it can be helpful to get a baseline mammogram and continue to get mammograms regularly — so the radiologist has something to compare the new images to.) If this happens, they'll likely request you get additional mammogram images or an ultrasound to get a better look at the changes.

More: Why You Might Want to Consider a Baseline Mammogram (& the Best Age to Get One)

"Sometimes, these imaging tests allow the radiologist to make a definite diagnosis, such as cyst or benign calcifications," Frimmer tells SheKnows. "However, occasionally, the pictures are inconclusive and the extra step of a biopsy is required to help figure out the diagnosis and exclude cancer."

What happens during a breast biopsy?

Most breast biopsies today are not the same invasive surgical procedures they were in the past. Some people don't know this, so in addition to being worried about the results, they are nervous about the procedure itself.

In reality, it's relatively simple now, Frimmer explains. Whereas the older surgical version of a breast biopsy could require general anesthesia, the type common today only uses a local anesthetic — like lidocaine — to numb the area. According to Frimmer, the possible pain and burning from the anesthetic is typically the most uncomfortable part of the procedure.

Then, through image guidance, the radiologist inserts a thin needle into the breast to remove a small piece of tissue. The whole procedure should take around 10 minutes, Frimmer says.

The removed tissue is then sent to a pathologist, who looks at it under a microscope and gives the radiologist more information about what's causing the abnormality, she adds.

How common are breast biopsies?

Of course, you never want to hear your radiologist tell you something popped up on your mammogram, but hopefully, it'll help to know that being called back for a breast biopsy is pretty common. According to Frimmer, out of 1,000 women who get a screening mammogram, 100 (10 percent) will be called back for more pictures, either additional mammogram pictures or ultrasound; of those 100 women who are called back, a biopsy is recommended for 20 of them.

How long will it take to get the results?

Unfortunately, breast biopsies aren't instant. Frimmer explains this is because the radiologist and pathologist want to make sure they take their time and make sure they understand as much as possible about what's happening with your body before giving you any news.

A lot depends on the institution where you got your mammogram and biopsy done. Some places have the facilities and personnel for a quick turnaround — like 24 hours, Frimmer says. Other places can take several days or a week to get the results. Frimmer recommends asking your doctor or radiologist how long you should expect to wait for the results to make that difficult time a little easier to manage.

Does this mean I have cancer?

Again, a breast biopsy is another type of test and doesn't automatically mean you have cancer, Frimmer says. In fact, a majority of breast cancer biopsies are benign and are primarily caused by benign tumors like fibroadenoma and fibrocystic changes, she explains.

However, according to Frimmer, 25 to 30 percent will result in a cancer diagnosis. In those cases, what happens next also depends on the institution. Someone from the hospital will call the patient and let them know cancer was found and what the next steps will be. The first thing to do, Frimmer says, is to schedule an appointment with a breast surgeon.

Many hospitals now have breast cancer navigators — nurses who help patients navigate the whole process and help them figure out who they need to see, answer any questions they may have, guide them in the right direction and provide emotional support for patients and their families.

What else should we know about breast biopsies?

The biggest thing Frimmer wants people to know is that breast biopsies are not unusual and shouldn't be cause for alarm.

“Don’t panic — this is very common,” she says. “A lot of women have biopsies. It’s really just an extra diagnostic test.”
