What Our Favorite Celebs Are Saying on International Day of the Girl

In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11 International Day of the Girl Child, and the reasoning behind their decision was simple: according to the event's website, International Day of the Girl Child was founded “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.”

But it isn't just the UN acknowledging this holiday. For the last several years, writers, journalists, politicians and celebrities have taken time to speak out about Day of the Girl Child, and this year is no different. Today, celebrities like Michelle Obama, John Legend, Savannah Guthrie and Jennifer Lopez hopped onto social media to share empowering messages centered on the idea that women of all ages matter and deserve our support.

1. Melinda Gates

Melinda Gates joined friends, Zari and Raya, on Sesame Street to talk about the amazing qualities all girls have.

2. Pharrell Williams

Rapper Pharrell Williams used #DayoftheGirl to thank women for being – well — exactly who they are.

3. Gillian Andersen

The X-Files star reminded everyone that today is about women being seen and heard. Finally.

4. Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman

Keith Urban and wife, Nicole Kidman, took a few moments out of their day to share a special song, which was filmed by their own daughters Sunday and Faith.

5. Emma Watson

Emma Watson used International Day of the Girl Child to promote Frida: The Young Feminist Fund, an organization which focuses on supporting young female activists.

6. Michelle Obama

Former first lady Michelle Obama took a moment out of her day to talk about the disproportionate number of young girls not in school and to promote the Obama Foundation's new initiative, the Global Girls Alliance — a program dedicated to "empower[ing] adolescent girls around the world through education."

7. Savannah Guthrie

The Today show cohost shared a special moment with her daughter, Vale, and former First Lady Michelle Obama during the Today show's celebration of International Day of the Girl.

8. John Legend

Much like the first lady, John Legend also used #DayoftheGirl to speak out about the Global Girls Alliance.

9. Madeleine Albright

Former Secretary of the State Madeleine Albright used International Day of the Girl Child to address how poverty effects young women and, specifically, young girls.

10. Jennifer Hudson

During her appearance on the Today show's special celebration for International Day of the Girl, special guest Jennifer Hudson shared on Instagram that women can achieve their dreams if they hold on to them.

11. David Beckham

Soccer star David Beckham joined Michelle Obama and John Legend in their fight for educational equality.

12. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez also spoke about the importance of education and the Global Girls Alliance.

13. Oliva Wilde

Olivia Wilde took a moment out of her day to thank her daughter, teacher and best friend, Daisy Jo — and to wish her a Happy Birthday.

14. Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau posted an adorable photo of his daughter sitting, with her feet up, on Dad's desk.

15. Amy Schumer

And comedian Amy Schumer honored her dear friend, @jarielys_goodman who inspires "to enjoy every second and fight for what I [Schumer] believe[s] in!"

While these messages are important, sentimental and (well) great, it is imperative we honor girls — and women — not just today but every day. It is the only way things will change.

Is Another Baby in Kylie Jenner's Near Future?

Rumors that Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are "actively trying" to have a second child are swirling after a series of Snapchats Jenner released over the weekend gushing about prospective baby names

"I want another baby, but when is the question, and I'm definitely not ready right this second," she told fans on Snapchat earlier this week. "And I don't know when I will be. But yeah, when I do, I'd love to share more of that with you guys. I definitely want another girl, hopefully, and I want her to have another feminine name. That's all I know."

More: Kylie Jenner Already Has Name Ideas for Stormi's Baby Sister

While she made it clear that she wasn't ready just yet, sources told Us Weekly that Jenner and her rapper beau are already making a concerted effort to conceive (aka, they're having a lot of sex).

"They're actively trying for another," the source said. Apparently, the two are "even more in love" since welcoming their first daughter and want to keep the love train chugging along. The source added that the couple is confident they could handle another kid and that Jenner is "still able to do everything she wants to do and be a present mom."

Jenner's baby mania has dominated headlines this week, as she revealed how she settled on the name Stormi and its spelling during a makeup tutorial with makeup artist James Charles.

More: Kylie Jenner Made This Last-Minute Change to Stormi's Name

"I was just looking at nature names, like weather- and earth-inspired," she said. "Storm was on there — just Storm. And then I was like, I kinda was '-ie' like me, so then I did Stormie with '-ie.' It was always Stormie with an '-ie.'"

She later changed her mind while on the phone with someone from the birth certificate office. "They were like, 'How do you want to spell it?' And I was like, 'S-T-O-R-M-I.' They were like, 'You sure?' I said, 'Yeah, just an I.' Literally right then and there, I just changed it to an I," Jenner said. "I said, 'Damn, I guess that’s her name.'"

Maybe baby-naming round No. 2 will go a little smoother? There's only one way to find out. (Yes, we're talking about sex again.)

These 3 Girls Dressed as the Hocus Pocus Witches, & It's Perfect

Watch out; these three sisters are plotting to put a spell on you!

Halloween's not even here yet, but the pint-size Grabenstein sisters from Waco, Texas (you may know it as Chip and Joanna Gaines' stomping grounds) have already won the worldwide title of best joint costume. The girls — Landri, 6, and twins Alli and Maddi, 8 — couldn't wait for the 31st to roll around before dressing as their favorite film trio, the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus.

More: Halloween Costumes for the Whole Family (Even Grandma)

"October 1st rolls around and they're asking, 'Mommy, can we watch Hocus Pocus?'" the girls' mom, Heather Grabenstein told Good Morning America. Inspired by the brisk weather, Grabenstein told her daughters she'd take things one step further and enlisted help from Heather Rust Photography to transform her little witches into Halloween icons.

In the photos, each Grabenstein sister assumes a different identity and totally nails her role. Maddi sported bright-orange hair and a perfect pucker to portray Winifred (Bette Midler), Alli popped in pink as she played Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Landri slayed as the ever-hilarious Mary (Kathy Najimy).

More: How Old Is Too Old to Trick-or-Treat?

"They totally get into character, which is so funny," Grabenstein told GMA. Photographer Heather Rust agreed, adding, "They are the sassiest little things."

Speaking of getting into character, Hocus Pocus is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and while I'm not typically huge on remakes, I think the Grabenstein gals should definitely throw their witch hats into the ring to star in a reboot. Maybe they could even gather up some of the old cast, who recently reunited for a special screening of the film. To keep things fresh, perhaps Lil Bub or Grumpy Cat could portray Thackery Binx? (I don't know. I'm just spitballing here.)

The only problem with these costumes is that they're so good. Is it possible they could ever top them? Grabenstein isn't entirely sure, but she's "going to figure out something," she says.

We're counting on it, girls.

Meet the Girls From Uganda Making Change One Period at a Time

Think back to when you first got your period. You were probably in middle school or high school and had to sit there in class dealing with the cramps, bloating and uncertainty that came with the pubescent territory. Sure, you were uncomfortable and perhaps in pain, but you were probably at least able to get the necessary products.

But for the approximately 250 million girls around the world who don't have access to menstrual supplies, getting their period can be more than inconvenient; it can keep them from attending school.

Menstrual equity was one of many issues raised at the Girls Speak Out Summit held on Thursday at United Nations headquarters in New York City as part of the International Day of the Girl Child. At the event, girls from around the world gathered to discuss the biggest issues they face as a generation.

More: 5 Things You Can Do to Honor International Day of the Girl Child With Your Kids

One of the participating delegations was from Global G.L.O.W. (Girls Leading Our World), an organization that empowers women and girls to prompt global transformation. Specifically, the girls in attendance were part of their HerStory initiative, which works in 27 countries to listen to, amplify and champion the voices of girls through after-school programming designed to foster self-advocacy.

In addition to attending events at the U.N., the girls also took part in the weeklong Global HerStory Summit, where they met with girls and women from around the world to discuss and workshop various community initiatives. At the end of the week, the girls will return home with a small amount of capital from Global G.L.O.W. to help implement their project.

One of these projects is based in Uganda and involves girls creating and distributing reusable menstrual pads to members of their community as well as educating them about period hygiene, facts and stigma. Susan Tusabe is a mentor who works with the HerStory group in Uganda, and she tells SheKnows that girls in their community are dropping out of school in large numbers because they don't have adequate menstrual supplies.

Cloth to make the reusable pads comes from a local factory, and Tusabe and other adult mentors teach the girls how to cut the correct shape and then sew the pads to assemble them. In addition, she says that once the girls learn this skill, it's something they can do with their families to earn extra income.

Patience, 14, is one of the girls in the HerStory group in Uganda. She tells SheKnows that when girls feel they have no other option but to drop out of school because they don't have access to period products, many end up in sex work or forced marriages.

"I saw that it would not be good if most girls are dropping out of school, because in this world, girls should have a good future, which could lead to a better world," she says.

Two women from Uganda in front of UN signPatience also notes that many girls don't know how to keep themselves clean during their periods, so in addition to how to make and use the pads, teaching the community about menstrual hygiene is another aspect of the program. And that community also includes the boys, Tusabe says, noting that some of the boys are already supportive of their project.

When it comes to a strategy for decreasing stigma, Patience says talking about it and teaching others about menstruation is key. "Because if I teach you, you can also teach another," she explains. "That’s how the program continues."

If you'd like to get involved with Global G.L.O.W., there are opportunities to volunteer, become a community ambassador, intern or donate.

Josh Radnor's First Grey's Anatomy Episode Got Mixed Reviews From Fans

Grey's Anatomy is officially back for its historic 15th season and things kicked off with a rather awkward blind date between Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and new guy John (guest star Josh Radnor, from How I Met Your Mother). Fan reactions to the episode were mixed, but one thing is for sure: casting Radnor certainly prompted conversation.

More: Grey's Anatomy Casts HIMYM Star Josh Radnor as Meredith's New Love Interest

Here's what happened, as reported by Us Weekly: Meredith agreed to a totally blind date (as in, no preview photos) set up by a matchmaker patient. She met up with John at a restaurant and the pair had some decent first-date conversation before he realized he was actually supposed to be on a blind date with someone else—who was across the restaurant with Meredith's original match, the two of them apparently hitting it off. Weird, but OK. The date took a turn for the worse when John said that single moms make dating difficult because they are "desperate."

Meredith, a mother of three, obviously left.

Ahead of the episode airing on Thursday, Radnor quote-tweeted a fan who said (jokingly, we hope), "You break her heart, I'll break your neck." Radnor quipped, "Terrified to let you all know I'll be on Grey's Anatomy tonight."

Several fans saw similarities between John and Radnor's character on HIMYM, Ted Mosby. One fan wrote, "Me: sees Josh Radnor playing Meredith's love interest in @GreysAnatomy. Me: immediately thinks of a Grey's Anatomy and a How I Met Your Mother crossover. What are you doing Ted you're supposed to be with Robin."

Some fans were into the comparison, like the person who tweeted, "Josh Radnor’s character on Grey's Anatomy is literally Ted Mosby all over again and I love it."

Others were less impressed. One fan said, "I heard Josh Radnor’s voice on tonight’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy and had to pause it and prepare myself to keep watching. As little as I like her, Meredith Grey deserves better than Ted Mosby."

One fan even compared Radnor's character to arguably the worst love interest ever from Sex and the City: "I feel like Josh Radnor’s character on Grey’s Anatomy is gonna end up being the Jack Berger of Meredith’s relationship history."

More: Ellen Pompeo Says the Future of Grey's Anatomy Is in the Hands of Fans

Given how awkwardly their date ended, it's doubtful that Radnor will be back for another episode of Grey's Anatomy. Anything is possible in this series, but we'd bet money that the fans who were unhappy to see him in the premiere won't have to worry about a repeat appearance going forward. Given that this season is supposedly all about Meredith finding love, we can't help but wonder who will win her over.

Survivor's Jeremy Crawford Is Eliminated & Makes a Bold Claim About Another Contestant

It seemed as if Jeremy Crawford was voted off Survivor: David vs. Goliath because he was perceived as playing too aggressively. But he said that's not even close to reality—it's way deeper and much more personal than that. SheKnows had the opportunity earlier this week to chat one-on-one with Crawford shortly after his early elimination, and things took an unexpected twist. During our conversation, we learned how he is dealing with feelings of being unexpectedly eliminated and whether he regrets appearing on the show.

More: Survivor Contestant Pat Cusack Tells Us About His Heartbreaking Exit

SheKnows: It looked like Natalie was the obvious target, but you were voted out instead. What went wrong?

Jeremy Crawford: I don't want to go too much into things that, I guess, were not aired on the show. But, essentially I made a comment about a showmance between John and Angelina. Angelina, being a newlywed, did not like that and it put her on the warpath.

SK: So that was the motivating factor? Not that she claimed you were sneaking around trying to strategize behind peoples' backs?

JC: I don't even know where she could've got that because I never talked strategy with anybody except Mike. And I didn't tell anybody about Dan's Idol until 30 minutes or less before we went to Tribal. I never talked to Angelina about it, so when she said, "I don't trust him anymore," all of that was dealing with something else.

Photo of Jeremy Crawford in 'Survivor' on CBS

SK: Do you think her showmance with John was something real or was it just for fun?

JC: I think it was for real for her, but for John it wasn't anything.

SK: Just to be clear, you're saying Angelina came after you for making a showmance comment because she was just married and didn't want everybody knowing she was interested in somebody else?

JC: Yes. At first she told us that it was fine. That's what she told us in the beginning. "Oh, it's fine. I told my husband." But as it started to grow, I think it started to freak her out. She didn't want people to think she just got married a couple months ago and was already canoodling with another dude. It's kind of like people who are religious at home and then get on the show and they're not that religious and they don't want their families to think they're not religious. That just happens. ... She had pretty much got everybody to agree not to mention a showmance.

SK: Are you at all concerned about what Angelina's reaction will be to what you're saying?

JC: I know she won't say it's a lie. She can't deny it and keep a straight face.

SK: Are you getting any feedback from others on the show about your comments regarding Angelina?

JC: I did not think it would be a big deal to explain why I got voted out. But because I don't do production and I don't know anything about TV, I didn't think giving the background would be a big deal. I am realizing now that it is a big deal to people.

More: Jessica Peet Tells Us Who She Credits With Masterminding Her Survivor Blindside

SK: Did you know you were getting voted off or was it a shock?

JC: I was not shocked. I knew from day one that it was gonna be me or Natalie. Alec and Natalia were kind of like a Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Not a showmance, but like an alliance. Dan and Kara were in a full showmance and Angelina and John were in a showmance. Alison was a puzzle maker, the only one we had. Mike was a millionaire. So who else was left? Two old black people. Me and Natalie are both over 40. No alliance. We weren't cuddling with anybody. I couldn't sleep because at night I was putting more palm fronds on the roof as opposed to cuddling with people. Normally they'll put #Blindside on the screen if it's a surprise. I don't think anybody really thought it was like a blindside.

Jeremy Crawford is voted off Survivor: David vs. Goliath

SK: Do you have hard feelings about it or are you OK and moving on?

JC: I have some hard feelings toward Angelina. I don't have any hard feelings toward Natalie at all.

SK: Do you think it will ever be resolved? Do you think you guys could hug it out at the finale?

JC: No. I don't think there will be a hug. I don't think I will be hugging Natalie, either. Even though I don't have hard feelings, I don't have no reason to be hugging her.

SK: Tell us a bit more about Natalie. She's portrayed on the show as being somebody that seems to be difficult to live with. Is that really her or is the edit wrong?

JC: The edit made her look better. The edit cut out her fight with Mike. They edited out a fight with Natalia. [...] She was irritating for a long period of time.

Jeremy Crawford talks with Natalie Cole on Survivor: David vs. Goliath
SK: So when you get voted out before somebody like that, it has to drive you crazy.

JC: If I got voted out for the reason that I was the strongest player and doing these things, I would've been fine with it because that's the game. But it's not as crazy as getting voted out for something that I don't think was 100 percent shown on TV. We had three wins. I wasn't the strongest player. I wasn't the toughest guy. I don't think there's evidence that I was talking to people so much. The only person I talked to was Mike. That's why Mike's comments made sense. You didn't see me talking to people. You didn't see me searching for an Idol. To say that I'm the biggest threat, for a Survivor fan you should ask some questions about it being 9-1 on a first vote on somebody that everybody loves.

SK: It doesn't sound like you had an overall great experience. Do you regret going on Survivor?

JC: No. I loved it. It was one of the best experiences in my life. You may see me and Natalie having a fight as a bad experience. People disagree. You don't always get along. But I didn't really get to talk strategy with anybody other than Mike and it was just an outlet for me to get that energy out. I talked a little bit with Alec, but he wouldn't talk strategy with me. I didn't really get to talk strategy, and that part I regret.

What to Do if Your Child Is Scared of Halloween

$
0
0

My little boy has a dark side. He's always been drawn to spooky stories and loves to pretend to be a ghost or a goblin — and Halloween is his absolute favorite time of year. Of course, not all children feel this way. For many kids, the idea of people in scary costumes knocking at their door is, unsurprisingly, truly terrifying.

Kids are all unique, and they all find different things to be anxiety-inducing. Some kids just do not like Santa Claus. Others have an aversion to pets or thunderstorms. But when it comes to Halloween, although the date is filled with parties, dressing up and plenty of treats, it is an objectively frightening occasion — after all, that's the point.

Here is how you can enjoy all the fun of the season without scaring little ones silly.

More: How Old is Too Old to Trick-or-Treat?

Prepare for scares

Dr. Sanam Hafeez is a neuropsychologist and a member of the teaching faculty at Columbia University in New York City. She tells SheKnows parents should try to prepare their kids for the somewhat scary Halloween season beforehand. “Taking your child decoration and costume shopping can be a great opportunity to expose what’s behind the curtains of Halloween: It’s all make-believe. Let them touch the decorations (with your supervision, of course) and show them how the costumes and the props are all fake,” she says.

Acknowledge your child's fears

Even if you think your scared child is being "too sensitive," it is very important to acknowledge their real fears and anxieties. Let them tell you how they feel and avoid the temptation to minimize their feelings.

Plot your trick-or-treat route

It’s a good idea to also plan out your trick-or-treat route to ensure that you are visiting homes that are suitable for smaller kids. Avoid any streets where the decorations have veered from just spooky to plain gruesome. If your child is particularly nervous, go in a group or even when the sun is still out if your neighbors don't mind.

Skip trick-or-treating altogether if it's too much for your little one. Instead, consider holding a Halloween party at your house or visit a daytime community event where small children are the focus.

Hafeez says it can, however, be difficult to avoid all triggers. “Children who get nervous around Halloween time tend to have a greater sensitivity to the gore and fake blood that they may encounter. This represents a challenge for parents because we can’t keep our children in a bubble for an entire month.” Not to mention an entire childhood/life.

Seek help if fears persist

Most kids will grow out of their fear of Halloween, but if feelings of anxiety persist, it is a good idea to seek the support and advice of a mental health professional, Hafeez explains. “There is a danger that children who are exposed to anxiety and fear over time turn into adults with anxiety and fear because we carry into adulthood the experience of childhood," says Hafeez. "This is just an opportunity to help your child learn to cope with their fears.”

Plan inclusive parties

Dr. Michelle Maidenberg, the president and clinical director of Westchester Group Works, a center for group therapy in Harrison, New York, found that more and more of her patients were expressing anxiety in the run-up to Halloween. When she surveyed 45 kids, she found that middle school and high school students expressed concerns about friendship groups and fitting in with their peers at this time of year. She also found that choosing a costume proved to be anxiety-inducing for them as well.

So if you’re planning a party, try to make it open to all; if that is not possible due to space or budget constraints, still ensure that specific children are not excluded. Getting together with a group of parents and hosting a joint party can help to shoulder the burden and make sure no one is left out.

But don't forget: While you are striving for inclusion, remember that many kids with life-threatening allergies or food intolerances feel invisible during Halloween. Try to cater to their dietary needs as well.

Party games that won't scare

Throw an age-appropriate Halloween party that will be enjoyable for all kids — including any who are easily scared — by carefully selecting your decorations, costumes, music and games. Save the really scary stuff for when they are older; stick to seasonal decorations such as pumpkins rather than overly gory displays. And while you're at it, plan a few fun — not frightening — activities. Here are some ideas:

  • Apple bobbing
  • A scavenger hunt around the house
  • Freeze dance
  • A dance competition
  • A not-too-spooky story
  • Hide-and-seek

Why Was Demi Moore a Guest at Princess Eugenie's Royal Wedding?

Demi Moore apparently has friends in very high places — though maybe that's not really a surprise after all. The actor was spotted arriving at Windsor Castle on Friday, Oct. 12 with a handful of other unexpected celebrities, all attending Princess Eugenie's wedding to Jack Brooksbank.

More: Prince George & Princess Charlotte Are About to Take On Some Big Wedding Roles

People reports that Moore is longtime friends with Eugenie's parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. Knowing that, it makes sense that she would attend her wedding. The outlet also reports that Moore has previously attended other functions hosted by the family, including a birthday party for Princess Beatrice, Eugenie's older sister.

Moore and Ferguson became friends when the latter developed an interest in Kabbalah, per Mirror U.K.. Although Ferguson and Prince Andrew ended their marriage in 1996, a decade after they tied the knot, the two have remained close. Mirror reports that Ferguson briefly tried to matchmake Moore and her ex-husband, though aside from some tabloid headlines, we're not sure if the attempt went anywhere.

Although Moore attracted a lot of attention for attending the wedding, she wasn't the only celebrity there. Entertainment Tonight reports that Ricky Martin, Liv Tyler, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and her daughter, Lila Grace Moss Stack, Ellie Goulding, James Blunt, Robbie Williams and Cara Delevingne were also in attendance, each of them dressed to the nines for this incredibly stylish wedding.

Members of the royal family were also in attendance, including Eugenie's grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. Eugenie's father, Prince Andrew, walked her down the aisle and her cousins, Prince William and Prince Harry, attended the wedding with their wives, Catherine (née Middleton), Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan (née Markle), Duchess of Sussex, respectively. William and Kate's children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, were among the page boys and bridesmaids at the wedding.

The royal family shared several photos from the day on Instagram, including romantic shots of Princess Eugenie and Brooksbank.

Princess Eugenie and Brooksbank exchanged vows at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, the same venue where her cousin Prince Harry and Meghan married in May. Per People, Queen Elizabeth hosted a reception lunch at the castle after the ceremony and the newlyweds plan to have a festival-style celebration on Saturday, Oct. 13, complete with food stalls and a fairground. Even without Moore and the other celebrity guests, this sounds like a wedding to remember.

Alex Rodriguez Revealed a Photo of Jennifer Lopez That Proves They Were Meant to Be

Here's an excellent plot for a romantic comedy: young baseball player gets a generic autograph from a pop superstar. Twenty years later, they meet and fall in love. Wait — that's not the plot of a romantic comedy — that's real life. At least, it is for power couple Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez.

More: Alex Rodriguez Is the Most Supportive Partner According to Jennifer Lopez

On Thursday, Oct. 11, Rodriguez shared a super-sweet throwback (#tbt) on his Instagram, featuring a familiar face: his girlfriend's. This post was a little outside the norm, though, because it was a two-decades-old headshot of Lopez — and it was signed.

"#TBT to almost 20 years ago when a big time global pop superstar signed a pic for a young ball player #lifecanbeafunnythingsometimes #pictureperfect #keepsake #jlo," Rodriguez wrote.

According to Entertainment Tonight, Lopez reposted the snapshot on her own Instagram. She wrote, "Wow!! Had to repost!!! He found this cleaning out storage!!" How many of us have left signed memorabilia of our favorite celebrities in storage, or at our parents' house? Very few of us can say that we went on to date those celebrities, but hey — Rodriguez is a lucky guy.

Obviously, a lot has happened in the last twenty years. Both Rodriguez and Lopez have gone through failed relationships, started families, and made major career moves. Lopez recently ended her Las Vegas residency, All I Have, which Rodriguez attended regularly with his daughters—who are some of Lopez's biggest fans.

After her final performance in Vegas, Lopez opened up to ET about how much it means to have Rodriguez in such a pivotal role in her life: "Listen, to have a partner who's that supportive, who comes to that many show — we all know what it's like to be in show business. It's a grind," she said. "It's being away a lot and he really makes the effort, so do I, to be there for each other and it means a lot to me."

Honestly, we're pretty excited by what 2019 weddings will have to offer, from the food to the florals. It's a good time to be a bride... and an even better time to be a guest!

1. Small plates & snack platters will be big

Multiple sources told us that traditional seated dinners and buffet stations are trending downward in favor of a more modern approach.

"I think a big food trend we will see in 2019 will be small plates for wedding dinners and grazing boards [display boards]," Joy Schmidt, director of catering and conference services at The Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta Hotel in St. Louis, tells SheKnows. "Small plates offer couples an ability to serve a variety of foods that still allow the chef to present in an artistic fashion. Although people enjoy the variety a buffet or stations offer, small plates offer that variety without lacking in presentation. A visually impressive grazing board can not only be stunning, but it keeps the guests full and happy."

Better yet? No waiting in a long buffet line.

2. Shabby-chic & bohemian make way for elegance & drama

"More couples are looking for unique wedding venues and opting for portrait sessions either before the ceremony or immediately afterward that are dramatic and high fashion, which tends to go along with the feel of the entire day," Elizabeth Williamsberg, a wedding photographer in Colorado, tells SheKnows. "While I'm still shooting a lot of weddings in our state and national parks, more and more weddings for next year are opting for historical buildings, especially those with an industrial or art deco feel to them."

Photographer Michelle Tverberg has also noticed this trend. "I am seeing for 2019 the trend of luxury hotels being 'in.' For a long time, we have seen outdoor location weddings being the ultimate trend, including barns and gardens. However, hotels are really stepping up and coming back into style, and I can see why, with many providing outdoor garden areas for the ceremony and walking into a glorious reception space with climate control as well as accommodations available for any/all of their guests," he tells SheKnows.

3. Fall weddings, not spring or summer

Every expert we spoke with tells us spring and summer weddings are making way for fall ceremonies instead. Maybe global warming is to blame? Either way, prepare your calendar for a busy autumn in 2019.

4. Florals are getting a big update

With a move toward more showstopping food offerings, centerpieces have been changing too.

"With food being the centerpiece, we've seen floral trend upwards — in the hanging variety," photographer Lexia Frank tells SheKnows. "Massive floral installations are now hanging from the ceiling instead of resting on the table and blocking guests' views of one another," and getting in the way of those artful displays of food.

And it's not just florals. Couples are opting for less traditional arrangements in general according to Jamie O'Donnell, wedding and event planner. "The casual Mason jar and rustic trend is fading out, but the idea of elevated and tailored greenery, living bars and plants along the aisle are coming in for an elevated natural look," she tells SheKnows.

5. Color is big

Gone are the pastels of yesteryear. Several sources tell us to expect weddings in 2019 to be a riot of color.

"Adding color into your wedding is huge. Millennial pink is officially 'out,' and purples, emerald green, blue and orange are officially 'in,'" Carly Long, marketing and public relations coordinator of LLG Events, tells SheKnows.

It's not just in the decor either. O'Donnell tells SheKnows, "Brides and Bridal Designers are embracing color and showcasing their personality. We’ll continue to see color in tux selections too. Navy has been trending for the last year... we may be seeing burgundy and a continuation of velvet tux jackets into 2019."

6. Unplugged weddings

It seems like a lot of couples are annoyed by their guests staring at a screen the whole wedding or having wedding pictures up on Facebook before the reception is even over.

"I think unplugged weddings are going to be huge next year," Erica Hartwig of Organic Moments Photography tells SheKnows.

Several of the experts confirm this trend, so if you're a wedding guest in 2019, expect to leave your phone at home.

7. Experiential ceremonies

Many of the wedding industry pros say couples are veering away from traditional ceremonies and receptions in favor of adding experiences their guests will love.

"Although couples still care about how things look, they're becoming more and more concerned with creating an amazing experience for their guests and making sure everyone leaves having created amazing memories," Erin and Drew Coles of The Metropolitan Players tell SheKnows.

Whether this means having more time on the dance floor, putting on special musical performances or even getting in acrobatic acts, expect to see fewer traditional events like parent dances and garter tosses at any upcoming ceremonies.

8. Destination weddings

Several experts say destination weddings are getting more and more popular.

"Destination weddings are huge and only getting bigger," Alison Laesser-Keck, event producer and designer, tells SheKnows.

Expect smaller but more detailed and intimate ceremonies in locations where couples can spend a whole weekend with their closest friends and families instead of just one night. After all, a wedding is a celebration!

Here Are the Most Searched-for Halloween Costumes of 2018

Over 3.5 billion Google searches take place every day, and with Halloween right around the corner, everyone's frantically searching for the best Halloween costume this year.

More: Halloween Costumes for the Whole Family (Even Grandma)

According to data pulled from September 2018 Google searches, the top 48 most-searched-for Halloween costumes run the gamut — from timely pop-culture costumes to plenty of classics.

Arguably the most talked-about online video game made its way to the very top: The No. 1 costume was Fortnite. In fact, Fortnite was the No. 1 search in 42 out of 51 states (with Washington, D.C., listed as a state in Google’s findings).

Alaska, Arkansas, D.C., Idaho, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah and Vermont all clearly didn’t get the memo that Fortnite is all the rage.

Coming in at No. 2 overall is Spider-Man, and for obvious reasons. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been at the top of Marvel fans' minds, especially as we inch closer to its release on Dec. 14.

Unicorn, dinosaur and witch — all evergreen costumes — came in at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

The top-searches list had a handful of surprises too. For instance, Black Panther came in at No. 21, ranking below mouse and the generic term "superhero."

Looks like the '80s are as popular as ever as well. Chucky of the classic Child's Play horror films from the late '80s and '90s made its way to No. 24, and simply "1980s" is on the list at No. 19.

Another surprise is the state of Vermont. The top five searches for the state are “monster,” “rabbit,” "Wednesday Addams,” “Belle” and “princess.”

Rabbit? Please explain, Vermont.

Wisconsin is admittedly getting in the über-creepy spirit with "doll" as its fifth-most-searched term. And, true to form, D.C. has "astronaut" as its fifth-most-searched term. Perhaps this has something to do with First Man's release today.

Let’s get back to the overall list, though.

Kids clearly still love Moana, the kickass female character from the 2016 Disney film of the same name. She ranked at No. 38.

Rounding out the list is Little Red Riding Hood (No. 46), It (No. 47) and Paw Patrol (No. 48).

Scarlett Johansson Will Make a Jaw-Dropping $15 Million in Her Solo Marvel Film

It seems like Marvel Studios is finally leaning into the power of its female superheroes. After years of fans begging for a stand-alone film about the badass Avenger Black Widow, the project officially has a director and, of course, a star. Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff in the upcoming, still-untitled Black Widow movie. But in even better news, she'll make the same as her male costars do, which is a win all around.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johansson will reportedly earn $15 million for her solo turn as the superhero spy. This is the same pay rate that franchise stars Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth nabbed for playing Captain America and Thor, respectively, in Avengers: Infinity War, which was Johansson's sixth time playing Black Widow. The outlet reports that Evans and Hemsworth received the same pay for their most recent solo films, as well as the upcoming fourth Avengers movie.

Historically, Marvel doesn't offer huge pay rates for its first solo title films, although admittedly, Johansson is in a unique position. She first appeared as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 in 2010 and has since kept up with the boys in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. She will also be in the fourth Avengers film. Since she has played the character for nearly a decade, it's about time that she makes the same pay as her male costars.

Johansson isn't the only woman heading an upcoming Marvel film. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Brie Larson, the titular star of 2019's Captain Marvel, reportedly received $5 million for the film and signed a seven-film contract with Marvel Studios. She tweeted on Oct. 11, "Counterpoint: this is not true," but we're not sure if she's talking about the pay or the multi-film deal because the tweet she quoted has since been deleted.

A Marvel spokesperson also responded to THR's story: "Marvel Studios disputes the accuracy of these numbers, and as a matter of policy, we never publicly disclose salaries or deal terms."

Regardless of Marvel's attempts to keep Johansson's pay under wraps, we think she deserves to at least be making the same as her costars, since she's clearly putting in the same amount of work.

Ina Garten is on fire these days.

Leading up to the release of her cookbook, Cook Like a Pro, on Oct. 23, Garten has wasted zero time sharing tips, tricks and hacks and posting sneak-peek recipes to her social media accounts and her website

More: 12 of Our Favorite Fall Recipes From Ina Garten

One week ago, the Barefoot Contessa star posted her version of avocado toast: cauliflower toast. And, yes, we double-tapped and pinned it immediately.

Before that, Garten shared a corn hack, a cauliflower hack and many other hot tips. (Please, just follow her Instagram account if you aren’t already.)

And all us Garten groupies have been following her every move, eating it all up — including Queer Eye star Antoni Porowski.

Yesterday, Garten posted a short instructional video showing fans how to make her favorite vinaigrette, lemon vinaigrette. It’s so easy, it only requires four ingredients.

Garten's big tip? Use the measuring cup to measure and mix at the same time.

"Combine 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1/2 cup good olive oil, 1 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper in a small glass measuring cup and whisk until combined," Garten wrote in the caption

Did you catch that? Don’t just use any ole olive oil. Splurge a little and use good olive oil — because Garten said so.

Porowski was also clearly a fan of the video, but he kept his composure, commenting simply, “Legend.”

But here’s the best part: Garten responded, writing, “@antoni Love your show!! xxx Ina.”

Lynzy Lab Performs Her Viral Song 'A Scary Time (for Boys)' on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Lynzy Lab has become something of a singing sensation recently. The dancer and painter took the internet by storm last week when she released her now viral song, "A Scary Time" (For Boys), in response to a comment by President Donald J. Trump, who was reportedly asked to comment on the Kavanaugh hearings and replied that it is "a very scary time for young men in America, where you can be guilty of something you may not be guilty of."

Lab disagreed with Trump's position and chose to sing about it. The resulting viral fame got the ukulele-playing singer to perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live, just in time for International Day of the Girl Child.

Of course, her set was brilliant but how could it not be, especially with lyrics like “I can’t walk to my car late at night while on the phone / I can’t open up my windows when I’m home alone.. But it sure is a scary time for boys / Gentlemen band together, make some noise / It’s really tough when your reputation’s on the line / And any woman you’ve assaulted could show up anytime.”

And while she performed the original version of the song alone, Lab had some backup on Kimmel: she was joined onstage by nearly 20 other women.

That said, this time last week, most of us didn't know who Lab was. (I mean, her family and friends obviously did, but she wasn't a household name. Most wouldn't recognize her voice or face.) But all that changed when Lab recorded and released the aforementioned song on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

The original video has received 11.5 million views on Twitter alone.

And while we do not know what is next for Lab, we are thrilled she is using her talents and voice to make a difference.

These New Herbal Essences Bottles Serve an Important Purpose

Oct. 11 was World Sight Day, and in honor of the international "holiday," Herbal Essences made a big announcement: The hair care company will be releasing a series of new bottles designed to help the visually impaired.

More: The Alexa of the Future Will Be Able to Tell if You Are Sick

According to Procter & Gamble, the new packaging will have "tactile indentations that... help differentiate the brand’s shampoos from its conditioners... alleviating in-shower confusion."

The markings will be found on bottom of each bottle and will use a series of universally identifiable shapes (such as dots and lines) instead of braille.

Of course, selecting shampoo and conditioner may seem like an unexciting/unimportant task, at least for those of us with unimpaired sight, but for those with a visual disability, it can be a real pain in the, um, brain.

And speaking of brains, the bottle idea was the brainchild of Sumaira “Sam” Latif, P&G’s special consultant for inclusive design, who has been with the company for nearly two decades — and is also blind.

“Imagine the daily challenges, like choosing matching clothes in the morning or simply taking a shower after a long day. As a blind person, you must do these things using touch rather than sight. You don’t really know which bottle the shampoo, conditioner, or soap is... you have to get creative. I used to put an elastic band around shampoo or sellotape on conditioner to remind me,” Latif explained.

However, Latif knew there had to be another way, and according to the press release, she worked with Procter & Gamble to develop what she calls a "universally recognizable tactile feature."

Herbal Essences North America Brand Manager Lynn Hicks also said in the statement that this wasn't just the right decision, but that this change will benefit many. “Making our products more accessible can improve the experience for everyone... [and] while we designed this tactile feature specifically for the visually impaired, others, like seniors or kids, will also benefit from this feature" — and that is something we can definitely get behind.

Jonathan Scott Thinks 'the Right Person' Is Still Out There

Breakups are hard, but part of moving on is realizing that there is, as Cher told us, life after love. Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott is taking that lesson to heart, six months after his split from longtime girlfriend Jacinta Kuznetsov, according to comments he made in a new interview.

More: Drew Scott Knows the Real Reason Behind Jonathan Scott's Breakup

“Right now, I am pretty intimately involved with fourteen construction projects,” Scott joked with People in an article published on Thursday, Oct. 12. “I think the right person will come along when they come along. Other than that, I haven’t really put any thought into it. For me, it’s not a focus right now.”

Scott also opened up about why he has thrice said no to starring in ABC's The Bachelor, even when they approached him about doing the show over the summer. Scott told People, “I would never do it, because I would just have too much anxiety. I am much more interested in being focused on one person.”

Scott and Kuznetsov met at a charity gala in 2015 and he announced their split via a heartfelt post on Instagram in April. Scott wrote, "We grew to respect each other fiercely and know that will remain unchanged for the rest of our lives. Sometimes life takes you on unexpected paths and those paths aren’t always in the same direction. There’s no drama or negativity; no jealousy or hate. Not even sadness or sorrow. Our memories are filled with joy and we will continue to advocate for each other as friends wherever we go."

A month later, Scott gave the best man speech at his twin brother Drew's wedding. Drew married Linda Phan in Italy in May, and Scott told People that their relationship embodies the kind of partnership he hopes to have one day. He also admitted that, when people ask him if he's "lonely" now that his brother has gotten married and he's newly single, they couldn't be further off the mark.

“People say to me, ‘Aren’t you going to be lonely now by yourself in Vegas?’" he said. "And I’m like, no, we work together all the time, so we always see each other. And Linda is amazing.”

People notes that Scott has been through heartbreak before and bounced back; when he and his ex-wife filed for divorce in 2009 after just two years of marriage, he said he felt "defeated," but that he "learned a lot." That definitely seems to ring true as he navigates his current situation; he's hopeful, which is huge, and we are hopeful for him, too.

Kelly Clarkson & Savannah Guthrie's Daughters Are BFFs for Life, & It's Adorable

Apparently, Savannah Guthrie's daughter, Vale, and Kelly Clarkson's daughter, River Rose — both 4 years old — are now best friends. Gotta hand it to those Today parties.

Today celebrated International Day of the Girl Child on Thursday, and Guthrie and Clarkson happily led their girls onstage to participate in the festivities. And what festivities! Performers included Jennifer Hudson and Meghan Trainor, with Clarkson joining in.

MoreKelly Clarkson Calls Out I Heart Radio for Not Playing Her Songs

Meanwhile, the two new little besties danced together, hugged each other, touched each other's faces lovingly, and generally melted everyone into a gooey pool of drippy candle wax.

Guthrie posted several super-sweet shots of the girls on Instagram, and commenters raved (and we know how rare it is to find some happy raving in comment threads):

"This was so adorable! Loved watching," wrote one fan.

"They stole the show!" said another.

"They are so adorable!!!" squealed one more. (Yes. We could hear the squeals from the office.)

And our fave comment: " These pictures are EVERYTHING!! The pure joy, love, acceptance between these two is so beautiful!! During a time when we see so much pain and destruction seeing these two gives me hope and fills my soul with joy!!"

MoreKelly Clarkson Is So Over Being Pitted Against Carrie Underwood

“They are best friends now and cannot be separated!” Guthrie, Today cohost, told Us after the big event. “They actually cried when they had to say goodbye to each other. It is a long distance relationship since they live in Nashville and we live in New York.”

There were some major names there — Michelle Obama, Karlie Kloss, Zendaya, and Hoda Kotb — but Vale only had eyes for River, who is the protagonist in Vale's fave book, River Rose and the Magical Lullaby by Clarkson.

"For her, the biggest star today was River Rose,” Guthrie continued. “She doesn’t know who Kelly Clarkson is — no idea! It’s all about River Rose.”

Guthrie couldn't have been happier watching the girls bond. "My favorite moment was seeing my daughter out there dancing like nobody’s watching because that’s just who she is. I love her fearlessness. And that’s what this whole day is about! It’s about girls who have that fire in them," Guthrie said. "Girls who have potential. Girls who want to dance or sing or be doctors or scientists. Girls getting an education so they can be whoever they want to be.”

Clarkson had a blast too, posting a shot of herself with none other than Michelle Obama and River:

Ah, the fun! The sweetness of a very special day for girls! Long-distance friendships are hard, but we have a feeling Vale and River Rose (and Clarkson and Obama and Guthrie) may just have created a lifelong connection. Excuse us while we text our BFFs now.

Mindy Kaling's Daughter Is Not Impressed by Her Singing

Good luck getting a peek at Mindy Kaling's daughter, Katherine Swati. The baby is now 9 months old, and Kaling has managed to keep her (and Katherine's baby daddy, damn it!) hidden from the world at large. Impressive.

But fortunately for Kaling lovers (like us), she talks about motherhood — and all the weirdness that comes with it — and we eat up every one of her anecdotes. Kaling revealed to Today that baby Katherine has tons of energy to spare. So it makes sense that her jumper seat is her absolute favorite thing in the world.

MoreAll of Mindy Kaling's Cutest Mama Moments

"She’s obsessed with this bouncer thing that we hooked up the ceiling, she sits in it and bounces all day, and she feels so powerful. My kid is really energetic. She burns off so much energy doing it. It’s fantastic," Kaling said.

Baby Katherine's second favorite thing in the world? "She loves pop-up books. The Sandra Boynton books, she loves. Moo Boo La La La. Not to name-drop, but Oprah [Winfrey] gave it to me. She gave me a shelf full of books. It was one of a 100 of them," Kaling raved.

Kaling and Winfrey have been close friends since filming A Wrinkle in Time with Reese Witherspoon. When Katherine was 6 months old, Kaling joked to Ellen DeGeneres on her show that Katherine somehow just knew she was in the presence of greatness.

"The minute we went in, I was like, 'Katherine, please, please. You have no idea how high the stakes are right now.' And we walked in the door, and her eyes went wide and she stopped crying, like she knew she was in Oprah's house," Kaling told DeGeneres. "And then she was just, like, coyly smiling and being adorable for the next four hours."

Ryan Gosling & Britney Spears Had an Impromptu Mickey Mouse Club Reunion

Ryan Gosling went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote his new movie, First Man, on Oct. 12, but the best moment of his appearance actually happened backstage. In a moment that made all of our nostalgia-fueled hearts flutter, Gosling apparently ran into an old friend and Mickey Mouse Club costar: Britney Spears.

More: Ryan Gosling Says His Daughters Think He Works on the Moon

During his chat with DeGeneres, Gosling admitted that it's neither he nor Spears could remember when they last saw each other, which he took as "a sign that it's been quite a while." The All-New Mickey Mouse Club aired from 1989-1994 and it would seem these two didn't keep in touch much after the series ended, but that makes sense. They both went onto have megastar careers in different spheres of Hollywood.

Gosling admitted that when he first started working with Spears and their fellow Mickey Mouse Club member Christina Aguilera, he was intimidated by their performances.

“When we first got to the show they sort of had all the kids perform for one another… and I remember it was Christina Aguilera and then Britney performed and I remember thinking, ‘OK so they’re like freakishly talented,’” Gosling said. “I was used to working with talented people, but that was another level.”

When it was Gosling's turn to perform, he said he stood in front of his cast mates and “I think I was just like, ‘I’m Canadian.'" Be-still our hearts.

According to Entertainment Tonight, Gosling, Spears and DeGeneres posed for a photo together backstage, which DeGeneres shared on Instagram to tease the stars' (separate) appearances on Friday's show.

Although it's been a while since Gosling and Spears last saw each other, this isn't the first time we've heard about their memories of each other. In 2013, Gosling told Sunday Times magazine, "Britney was a sweetheart. She lived right above me, the girl next door. The little girl I used to play basketball and spin the bottle with."

Spears told DeGeneres about that spin the bottle game a few months later during an appearance on her show. According to E! News, Spears said, "I didn't kiss [Ryan] though. The only person I kissed was Justin [Timberlake]!"

If the bottle had landed on Gosling, would we have missed out on all the vicarious joy brought to us by Spears and Timberlake dating during the height of their respective pop music careers in the '90s? That's an interesting line of thought.
