Beyoncé Shares a Video Tribute to Jay Z to Celebrate the End of Their Tour

That’s a wrap! Or, as it were, a rap — Beyoncé took to Instagram on Tuesday to thank her husband, Jay-Z, for “every moment” the couple spent together on their On the Run II tour, which ended earlier this month. The iconic entertainer shared a video montage from the tour, noticeably filled with sweet exchanges between her and Jay-Z.

“To Shawn Carter, my Clyde, my best friend: this journey on OTR2 has been a highlight of my life. Thank you for every moment. I’ll be your hype man any day!” Beyoncé wrote to Jay-Z, before adding, “To the Hive and all the fans who supported OTR2, cheers to you and I. Salud!”

The pair certainly has no shortage of fans to thank. According to Live Nation, the massively successful tour drew over 2 million fans from the time it kicked off on June 6 to their final tour date on Oct. 4.

Throughout that time, Beyoncé’s Insta feed has been a glorious tribute to the tour and some of its defining moments. But it’s the more personal behind-the-scenes moments she has managed to sneak in that shine a light on the renewed strength of this power couple’s love story.

In addition to the most recent montage, Beyoncé shared a similar post on Sept. 22 depicting the tour, yes, but emphasizing the more poignant, unseen moments between the pair.

On Sept. 13, she wrote, “Tonight is the first of the last ten shows of OTRII. I’m doing what I love most with whom I love most. I wish it could never end.”

And on Sept. 6, in honor of her birthday two days prior, Beyoncé got sentimental about the current state of her life.

“At 36, I became a new mother of 3. I breastfed my twins. I renewed my vows with my husband of ten years. I came back home to the stage to do Coachella, after pregnancy. Then my husband and I released our album together, Everything Is Love. And we’ve been touring with our family around the world, and loving it,” she wrote. “This year has been monumental for me. I thank God for everyone in my life.”

So, do you think it’s too early to start petitioning for an On the Run III tour? Because we think now's as good a time as any to do it.

What You Need to Know Before Getting Your Kid's Ears Pierced

Whether your kid has been begging to have their ears pierced since forever or you're taking your baby to get their ears pierced before they realize it's gonna hurt — à la Kylie Jenner and baby Stormi — some expert tips will help you both get through it.

More: 3 Strategies for Talking to Your Daughter About Sexual Harassment

Get up-to-date on vaccines

Opinion was divided when Jenner shared a video on Instagram revealing her 5-month-old daughter had some baby-size ear candy. Some thought Stormi was too young to have her ears pierced, while others defended Jenner, pointing out that it's common for teeny tots to get pierced ears in the United States. And Jenner wasn't going against any medical advice — according to board-certified pediatrician Dr. Nadia Sabri, the earliest ear piercing should be done is after the infant receives their first round of vaccines to protect against tetanus. In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends this at 2 months old.

"Anytime after that is usually fair game," Sabri tells SheKnows. However, she personally recommends waiting until after 9 to 12 months of age so the infant has had the initial set of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis) vaccines for more protection. "The earring is basically a foreign object going through the earlobe, so the more protection we can offer our kids, the better," says Sabri.

Find a reputable piercer

Sabri recommends doing your research to find a highly reputable piercing studio. At the very least, it should have sterile, hygienic practices, use new materials for each customer and have experience piercing children's ears. If your pediatrician's office offers ear piercing services, this is probably your best bet.

"Some parents feel it is better to have their child's ears pierced at the doctor's office, as it can be more sterile of an environment," Dr. Danelle Fisher, chair of pediatrics at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, tells SheKnows. "Some people also like the comfort of seeing a trained medical professional as opposed to someone they meet at the mall for the first time."

However, as long as the ear-piercing process uses clean instruments and a proper technique, it can be performed by anyone.

Provide distractions

If your kid is still young enough to get distracted by a lollipop or a small toy, arm yourself with plenty of distractions to take their mind off the pain (the ear lobes are numbed before being pierced, but it won't be completely pain-free). Don't forget a pacifier and/or comfort toy or blanket for afterward. If they're too old to be diverted by candy, invite one of their friends to come along. It might boost their confidence — or at the very least their bravado. Don't tell your kid it won't hurt at all, though — it's best to prepare them by telling them it will hurt a little if they're old enough to understand.

Don't neglect aftercare...

For a successful ear-piercing experience, it's all about the aftercare to reduce infection risk (common signs are redness, pain, discharge and a foul odor from the earlobe).

"The cleaning of the earrings after the ears are pierced is the most important tip," says Fisher. "Earrings should be cleaned front and back with rubbing alcohol and then a small dab of antibiotic ointment. This process should occur morning and night for about a week. The earrings should also be rotated in the ears a few times a day."

If you're still battling with your kid on a daily basis to get them to brush their teeth, aftercare might be the most painful part of ear piercing — for you at least. Paying for cute or funky — and yes, overpriced — brand-name ear-cleaning products might work in your favor over boring drugstore cleaner.

Minimize risk of reaction

While a good aftercare routine will minimize the risk of infection (by far the most common post-piercing complication), you should also watch out for an allergic reaction to the metal. Sabri recommends using nickel-free or gold-plated earrings to minimize the risk of reaction due to allergy. "Signs of an allergy would be continued tenderness at the site, discoloration from the earring/post and redness," she says. If your child does have an allergic reaction, the best thing to do is remove the earring, clean the ear and leave it to heal fully before attempting to re-pierce the site with a different earring.

Finally, be aware that your kid will be desperate to change their earrings to something more exciting than gold studs. But the studs need to be worn for four weeks before changing them, so help your kid make a calendar to tick off the days, one by one. And then you can have the argument about whether 4-inch hoops are appropriate for school.

Grey's Anatomy Casts HIMYM Star Josh Radnor as Meredith's New Love Interest

Prepare for the pseudo-crossover you’ve always needed (but never actually knew), Grey’s fans! We’re all apparently about to meet Meredith’s new love interest, and it’s a familiar face. We’re not talking about DeLuca, either. Here’s a hint: How I Met Your Mother fans will go gaga over this news.

More: 12 Things You Notice When You Re-Watch Grey's Anatomy From the Beginning

That’s right — according to People, HIMYM’s Josh Radnor (aka Ted Mosby) is Mer’s new McBoyfriend.

Radnor’s schedule recently opened up after the NBC series Rise, in which he played lead Lou Mazzuchelli, was canceled earlier this year following its freshman season. Prior to that, he starred in the PBS period drama Mercy Street, which met its untimely end after only two seasons.

But, as they say, everything happens for a reason, and we’re inclined to believe that reason is letting fans experience the sheer joy of watching Ted Mosby court Meredith Grey.

Of course, the timing is perfect since everyone’s favorite dark and twisty doctor is finally ready to open herself up to a new relationship. So much so, in fact, that she hired a patient-slash-matchmaker to help her.

Thanks to sultry teaser trailers prior to the start of the season in which Meredith as having, ahem, sexy dreams, fans believed she might wind up in a relationship with her sister Maggie’s ex, DeLuca. Really, the show continues to tease a possible Meredith-DeLuca love connection with awkward exchanges and flirty glances.

But could that actually work? The jury’s still out. DeLuca somehow seems too familiar or too… something. Radnor, on the other hand, is fresh meat. And if the promo for this week’s episode is any indication, we may be meeting his character sooner rather than later.

In the short clip, Meredith arrives at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital looking chic and put-together in a taupe trench coat, heels and makeup with her hair down.

“What happened? Are you going to a funeral?” Amelia asks. “What’s wrong with you? You look weird,” says Alex. Leave it to the ever-cerebral Maggie to be the first to figure it out, though. “Oh my god, you have a date.”

More: The Cast of Grey's Anatomy in Their First Episodes vs. Now

However, Meredith won’t reveal a photo of her mystery date to her friends (and family). Not because she’s ashamed or embarrassed — but because she doesn’t have one. As she explains, her matchmaker prefers for people to meet as they would in real life, with “no preconceived notions.”

Naturally, this also means that we can’t be sure of the secret suitor’s identity just yet. That doesn’t stop us from hoping, though! The sooner Radnor arrives on the scene, the better.

Stale Nursery Trends It’s Time to Say Goodbye To

0

Ask any parent-to-be, and they’ll probably say the same thing: Half the fun of prepping for a baby is designing the nursery. But before you go pinning up a storm on Pinterest, it’s important to take a minute to think about the trends that are actually worth putting in your little one’s room. While some ideas might offer initial appeal — much like other outdated home decor crazes — a lot of nursery fads are fleeting.

Luckily, we have a lot of designer friends to call upon for help. We asked these interior aficionados what nursery trends are on their way out, and they had a lot to share. From animal prints to crib mobiles, read ahead for the trends the experts say it’s time to bid adieu to.

Animal prints

Stale Nursery Trends: Gendered Colors

If you were dreaming of a leopard-print-clad nursery for your little one, it might be time to go back to the drawing board.

“Animal prints in nurseries tend to get overdone,” says designer Amy Berry. “I think it’s always worth investing in more traditional textiles — curtains, rugs and even customizable crib upholstery — that can transition with the child from age 0 to 10 instead of treating the nursery like a temporary space filled with fads.”

More: A Cool, Contemporary Nursery That's Not Afraid of a Little Neon

Gendered colors

As gender stereotypes become more and more passé in the real world, it’s no surprise hip designers are making a concerted effort to create gender-neutral nurseries.

“Gender roles in society are beginning to be revisited, and so are the traditional go-to hues — i.e., pink for girls and blue for boys — used in nurseries,” says designer Anjie Cho. “Gray — my favorite is Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl — is the new yellow of non-gendered nursery colors; it works with pastels and is both soothing and neutral.”

Stale Nursery Trends: Gendered Colors

Studio Life/Style designer Shannon Wollack concurs: “Pale blues, pinks and yellows are becoming increasingly passé in nurseries,” she explains. “Whether it’s cool neutrals or pops of colors, a nursery should be an extension of the rest of your house, so try to utilize colors in your nursery that you would use in your living room or dining room palette.”

Themed nurseries

Similar to animal prints, too much of one fad can be an overkill in a nursery. Case in point: themed nurseries, especially ones with current superhero movie characters or sport team colors, can be a decorating disaster when done in large doses.

Stale Nursery Trends: Themed Nursery

“Just because you have a theme for your little one’s nursery doesn’t mean everything in the room has to incorporate said theme, says designer Jennie Bishop of Studio Gild. “A grouping of farm animal prints hung thoughtfully on the wall is a nod to Old McDonald’s farm without being too obvious.”

Traditional changing tables

Believe it or not, according to our experts, traditional changing tables are making their way out of more and more well-designed nurseries across the globe.

Stale Nursery Trends:

“Gone are the days of a traditional changing table,” says designer Julie Massucco Kleiner of Massucco Warner Miller. “We recommend getting a chic dresser that works as a changing table with a topper, like this one from Crate & Barrel, but will also be practical and stylish through their teenage years.”

“There are obviously items you need for the functionality of your nursery, like a changing table, but it pays to think outside the box when picking one out,” adds Studio Life/Style designer Brittany Zwickl, “A dresser with a removable changing table, like this one from Target, can grow old with you and your child.”

Bad lighting

It might seem like a no-brainer, but creating ambient lighting for your nursery is just as important as it is in any other room inside your home.

“Getting good sleep is essential for you and your new bundle of joy,” says designer Carneil Griffin of Griffin Direction. “Install wireless LED bulbs instead of unflattering incandescent ones above your baby’s crib and throughout the nursery so you can control the color and intensity of the light directly from your smart device. I’m a big fan of Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance smart bulbs, which also come in thin LED strips that can be concealed around the room’s trims and artwork.”

Stale Nursery Ideas: Bad Lighting

Tiny wall decals

For as adorable — and convenient — as small removable wall decals (think stick-on butterflies and peel-off animals) can be, our experts believe you’ll be much better off in the long run by employing a full-blown removable mural or temporary wallpaper in your nursery instead.

“We get the appeal of temporary wall decals for a nursery,” says designer Melissa Benham of Studio Gild, “They’re noncommittal, you can swap them out as your child changes interests, and they provide a layer of detail to a plain or painted wall. However, if you’re thinking about applying this trend, consider kicking it up a notch with a fun floor-to-ceiling wall mural or some removable statement wallpaper. The effect is much more dramatic and sophisticated.”

Stale Nursery Trends.

Cutesy decor

Like it or not, several of the designers we talked to feel that overly cutesy decor items — read: ones with baby animals and cartoons — are becoming increasingly outdated in contemporary nurseries.

“Similar to phasing out gendered colors in the nursery, millennials are replacing traditional baby animals, giraffes and owls in the nursery with more design-savvy visuals, like clouds and arrows,” explains Cho.

The same sentiment, it seems, goes for employing artwork in the nursery.

“Instead of generic animal photographs, display more meaningful images around the nursery to introduce your baby to the family story,” says Zwickl. “Like a collection of dream catchers or maps gathered from your personal travels.”

“Don’t forget you’re the one who will be spending the most time awake in your little one’s nursery,” adds Griffin. “Replace gaudy cartoon images with more sophisticated abstract artwork so you can create a colorful and visually stimulating space that isn’t obnoxious to be in.”

Stale Nursery Trends: Cutesy Decor

Cheesy crib mobiles

If you thought there was no such thing as a chic crib mobile, think again.

“Sure, the plush, rotating, musical mobiles that you see attached to almost every crib are cute, but there are definitely more artful options to choose from,” says Kristen Ekeland of Studio Gild. “Try a simple geometric mobile to add a sculptural element to the room without sacrificing any visual stimuli for your little one.”

Stale Nursery Trends: Cheesy Crib Mobiles

“When you think of crib mobiles, chic isn’t the first word that comes to mind,” adds designer Alyssa Kapito of Alyssa Kapito Interiors, “but there are so many gorgeous and artful options on the market now that can keep your nursery looking on point, especially this Calder-esque mobile from Kinder Modern.

Stale Nursery Trends:

Old-school rocking chairs

While retro rocking chairs are always endearing, our experts believe upgrading to a glider — a type of armchair that smoothly glides back and forth — can work wonders for your nursery and your life.

Stale Nursery Trend: Old-School Rocking Chairs

“Gliders are an amazing new addition to any nursery and not to mention extremely functional,” says designer Melissa Warner Rothblum of Massucco Warner Miller. “Since nurseries don’t have a ton of room for upholstery, we love getting a lot of bang from the glider. Ready-made glider options — like this one from Pottery Barn Kids — are limited, but keep in mind that any chair can be turned into a glider with some help from your local upholsterer.”

Stale Nursery Trends: Traditional Cribs

Traditional cribs

Why invest in an old-fashioned humdrum crib when you can have a more elevated and stylish model instead?

“Lucite cribs are super-in right now,” says designer Ariel Okin of Ariel Okin Interiors. “As are contemporary spindle cribs — like this Crate & Barrel Jenny Lind crib — that nod to old-world, handmade cribs but will still make your entire room look more fresh and modern.”

Stale Nursery Trends: Traditional Cribs

All brand-new furnishings

Why be wasteful when designing your nursery when you can save money — and the environment — by buying gently used furnishings and decor?

“My friend just sent out her Amazon baby registry and requested used versions of items if possible.” Cho says, “Hand-me-downs should be normal for any nursery as long as safety isn’t a concern, especially since the availability of high-quality used furnishings in good condition is greater than ever.”

Stale Nursery Trends: Short-Term Thinking (and Designing)

Short-term thinking (& designing)

The smart way to approach designing nursery spaces is by picking pieces that you will enjoy looking at too,” says Homepolish designer Tali Roth. Don’t be afraid to move some art from other spaces into the baby’s room or experiment with great bedding. There is no need to create a space that is babyish, as both yourself and your kid will outgrow it in seconds.”

“Kids grow up very quickly, and it’s important to be practical in the choices made since these are rooms [that] will transition over the years as your child’s taste evolves,” says designer Becky Shea. “Use more adult-like furnishings, whether it’s a cool pullout linen sofa (for those long-winded nights), a textured rug over baby tiles or a crib that converts to a toddler bed. You can still have a kids room while also taking longevity into account.”

Kylie Jenner Made This Last-Minute Change to Stormi's Name

It's been eight months since the world was introduced to Kylie Jenner's adorable daughter Stormi, and it's hard to imagine the baby girl having any other name. Now, Jenner is sharing the inspiration behind Stormi's name — and the very last-minute change she made at the birth certificate office.

More: Kylie Jenner Already Has Name Ideas for Stormi's Baby Sister

In a Halloween makeup tutorial with James Charles, the model and reality star shared that she was drawn to nature-inspired names during her pregnancy. "I was looking [at] nature names, like weather, Earth-inspired. Willow was on there — love the name Willow," Jenner recalled. "But I know a Willow. She’s a great Willow, and I’m close with her. When you know someone with that name, you can’t do that. It’s taken."

Luckily, there was another name on the list Jenner loved: Storm. So she decided on a twist: Stormie. The star was so confident about the name that she used it on all the monogrammed products she bought, including blocks that spelled out S-T-O-R-M-I-E.

But you know what they say about the best-laid plans. When it was time to finalize her daughter's name at the birth certificate office, Jenner had a sudden change of heart. "They were like, ‘How do you want to spell it?’ And I was like, ‘S-T-O-R-M-I.’ They were like, ‘You sure?’ I said, ‘Yeah, just an I.’ Literally right then and there, I just changed it to an I," Jenner recalled. "I said, ‘Damn, I guess that’s her name.’ And I called Travis and said, ‘I didn’t put an E and went with an I.'"

There's no word on what happened to all that monogrammed "Stormie" baby gear, but we have a feeling Jenner can afford to replace it. Ah, the joys of being a not-so-self-made billionaire

How Your Hair Health Changes in Your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s & Beyond

0
0

As women get older, our bodies start changing, and our hair is no exception. Many women notice differences in their hair as the years pass, ranging from changes in texture to color to thickness. But what's a completely normal part of aging, and what is the signal of something more serious? We spoke with some hair care experts to find out why these changes happen and what we can do to improve our hair health through the decades.

Hair loss

Given that hair loss may be the most alarming change you're noticing as you age, we're going to start there. First, it's important to realize you aren't the only one noticing a change in your hair. Angelo David Pisacreta, owner of Angelo David Salon in New York City and thinning hair specialist, has met with thousands of men and women who have experienced hair loss issues and tells SheKnows that around half of women experience some sort of hair loss by age 50.

More: What Causes Hair Loss in Women & How Can I Make It Stop?

But how much hair is too much to lose? Dr. Dominic Burg, chief scientist at évolis, reminds us it's perfectly normal to lose 100 hairs in a day, but when the growth period becomes too short and hair falls out too quickly, you may start to notice excess shedding. Other warning signs of thinning hair according to Burg are a widening part, a ponytail that feels noticeably thinner or extra hair in your hairbrush.

Some women may notice they can't grow hair past a certain length — usually the shoulders, Burg tells SheKnows. If this is the case, it means you are in the midst of a short growth phase, meaning your hair follicles aren't working at full capacity, he says.

Why your hair changes as you age

So a little hair loss is normal, but why does it — along with the textural changes to our hair — happen in the first place? According to Pisacreta, these changes can be genetic, but your diet, lifestyle and how you treat your hair are factors as well. Along the same lines, Burg explains changes in hormone levels play a big role, with pregnancy, contraceptive medication and menopause all potentially affecting your hair cycle.

If you find yourself changing up your diet a lot, Burg says that could be another reason for changes in your hair. In order to have the healthiest hair possible, he says to make sure you eat plenty of the B vitamins as well as biotin, zinc, iron and vitamin E.

And of course, stress can impact your hair health and quality. Burg explains that extreme stress or illness can force your body to slow down hair growth in order to favor the function of your other organs.

Hair by the decade

Here's what to expect from your hair as you age:

20s

Hair will generally be at its best in the early 20s, says Burg, because "hair shafts are thick and cuticles are tight." Women may see changes if they are stressed, extreme dieting or using contraception.

30s

Many women begin a family in their 30s, and pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding change the hormones in the body, says Burg, which can profoundly affect the hair cycle, leading to excess shedding and hair thinning.

"Pregnancy also affects the oil glands that lubricate and moisturize hair, with hair becoming more lustrous and beautiful during pregnancy followed by a big change after childbirth where hair becomes dull and more brittle," he adds.

40s

Many women find themselves professionally and personally busy in their 40s, as family and careers compete for time, Burg notes. As a result, many feel more stress and aren't taking care of themselves, which in turn affects their hair.

Hair shafts also become more brittle and prone to breakage in your 40s, Burg says. Many women in their 40s color their hair regularly, which can damage and weaken the hair further, he adds.

More: Is it Possible for Our Hair to Hurt?

50s

Many women begin menopause in their 50s which leads to having a shorter hair cycle, says Burg. Some people are completely gray by this point, and Burg explains their hair is more brittle because a person's melanocytes have disappeared.

60s

By now, menopause is typically complete, Burg says, and that means many women will see a drop in estrogen and a rise in testosterone. "Testosterone can affect women’s follicles in the same way as in some men," he adds, noting that by their 60s, women's hair becomes even more brittle, which is why so many this age opt for shorter hairstyles.

How to keep hair healthy

Given how stress can play a role in our hair growth, Pisacreta says we should be doing whatever we can to keep our stress levels down. As far as caring for your hair, he recommends only washing it every three to four days, as overwashing could strip your hair of natural oils it needs and add to hair loss.

Exercising boosts your metabolism, and Burg says that can help in hair growth as well. He also recommends avoiding harsh chemical treatments, and if you are wearing weaves or extensions, you must make sure they aren't too heavy, as they can lead to hair follicle death.

Chances are whatever changes your hair is going through as you age are completely normal, and like most other aspects of our health, eating well, exercising and keeping stress down is your best bet.

Channing Tatum Is Reportedly Dating Singer Jessie J

Since Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan announced their split in April, Tatum hasn't commented on the decision beyond releasing a joint statement with his ex. Of course, that doesn't mean he hasn't been living his life—and now, he's reportedly dating singer Jessie J, which may mean that he's moving on.

More: Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan Are Reportedly Moving On & Dating New People

At least two sources talked about the new relationship with Us Weekly. Tatum has allegedly been seeing Jessie J for just a couple months. One source reportedly told the outlet, “it’s new, casual and they’re having fun together.” Tatum has been spotted in the crowd at two of her recent concerts, in Salt Lake City and Seattle. Then on Saturday, Oct. 6, a social media user tweeted that the pair went for a round of mini golf together.

The Twitter user wrote, "Jessie came down and I was shook and then when I went to get them to play, Channing turned around and I was like [eyeball emoji]. We hugged and got a pic and then I got to hear Jessie singing somebody to love with the radio at the end of the course."

At the time of writing, the user has not posted their photo, which has led some users in the comments to question the validity of their story.

Meanwhile, People reports that a source told them the relationship "is very new," but Tatum's rep has not commented and Jessie J's reps did not respond immediately to People's request.

Us notes that Jesse J presented Tatum with an award for Best Comedic Performance at the MTV Movie Awards in 2015, but it's unclear exactly when they met for real.

More: Apparently, Channing Tatum & Daughter Everly Have a Dance-Off Every Day

Jessie J is the first person Tatum has been linked to since he and Dewan told the world that they were ending their nine-year marriage last spring. Dewan removed "Tatum" from her name just a few weeks after the split and has reportedly been dating as well. We wish them both the best and hope that this love connection between Tatum and Jessie J is a good one.

Celebrity Tattoo Fails We’re Still Cringing Over

For most of us, tattoos are a lifelong commitment that require a lot of serious thought. We take months — sometimes years — to mull over what we want and where we want it. Then comes the time when we find the perfect tattoo artist to turn our ideas into a reality. Still, despite the work and effort that goes into realizing our tattoo dreams, mistakes still happen. Sometimes, they’re small (like a missing comma), and sometimes, they’re huge (like a misspelling that totally changes the meaning of your tat). But what can you really do?

More: Celebrity Tattoo Artists to Follow on Instagram for Ink Inspo

Even celebrities, from Emma Watson to Rihanna, have tattoo fails, bringing new meaning to the phrase “Stars, they’re just like us.” To remind you of the tattoo snafus celebrities have been through, we’ve rounded up eight stars whose tattoo fails we’re still cringing over. Check them out ahead.

Ashley Greene

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: Ashley Green

Greene has a beautiful tattoo of the quote “Life’s a dream” in cursive on her foot — except the actor forgot the apostrophe, so her tattoo actually reads, “Lifes a dream.”

Britney Spears

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: Britney Spears

When Spears got a Chinese symbol tattooed on her waist, she wanted it to be the word "mysterious," but instead, the one she got means “strange.” The singer later got a tattoo of a Kabbalah-inspired symbol on her neck that was supposed to say, “God,” but it was also misspelled. Fortunately, Spears had that one removed.

David Beckham

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: David Beckham

In 2000, Beckham wanted to honor his wife, Victoria, with a tattoo of her name in Hindi on his arm. Alas, the name was misspelled, and it reads, “Vihctoria” instead of “Victoria.”

Emma Watson

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: Emma Watson

Watson wanted to make an impact when she showed up at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2018 with the phrase “Time’s Up” on her arm. But instead of it highlighting the movement or her work as one of Time’s Up’s founders, fans and the media focused on how the tattoo was missing an apostrophe, making it read, “Times Up.”

Hayden Panettiere

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: Hayden Panettiere

Panettiere has the phrase vivere senza rimpianti tattooed on her back. The phrase means “live without regrets” in Italian. However, there’s an extra I, but, in the true spirit of the tattoo, Panettiere isn’t too bummed about it. “It’s misspelled, whatever. I just put my own spin to it. Chances are I’ll probably get it fixed, but that’s why I love having it on my back because I don’t get bored of it,” she said according to HollywoodLife.

Jessie J

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: Jessie J

In honor of her song “Who You Are,” the singer tattooed the lyrics, “Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars," on her waist. Turns out, there was a misspelling. Instead of "lose," Jessie J got the word loose tattooed on her body. Her tattoo fail is the main reason fans will almost always see the singer in high-waisted clothes. “I did it ages ago and had ‘Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the star!’ tattooed on my side. Not long after I had it done, my mum said to me in tears, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this, but it is spelt wrong,'” Jessie J said on The Graham Norton Show. “It’s really big, which is awful. It’s the reason I always wear high-waisted stuff. I’m not going to put a spelling mistake that close to a camera!”

Rihanna

Celebrity Tattoo Fails: Rihanna

Rihanna has two misspelled tattoos. The first is the tattoo of the French words rebelle fleur on her neck. Because the adjective is in the front, the phrase actually translates to “flower rebel” instead of “rebel flower” like Rih wanted it to. But that’s not the only tattoo fail on Rihanna’s body. In 2009, the singer tattooed the word "forgiveness" in Sanskrit on her side, but that was also misspelled.

Harry Styles

In 2012, Styles tattooed his favorite lyrics from Temper Trap’s song “Sweet Disposition” on his arm. However, they were the wrong lyrics. Styles tattooed “won’t stop ’till we surrender,” while the actual lyrics are “won’t stop to surrender.”

To make matters worse, Styles’s then-girlfriend, Taylor Swift, was the one who asked the band to write down the lyrics of the song to give to Styles. The lyrics were correct on paper, but somehow, they were lost in translation when Styles was at the tattoo shop, and he ended up with a typo. “Harry Styles has got the wrong lyrics tattooed—he’s got like a portion of the pre-chorus of ‘Sweet Disposition’… but it’s wrong,” Dougy Mandagi, one of the band’s members, told Pedestrian TV.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's New Film, The Kindergarten Teacher, Isn't as Charming as You Think

Don’t go into Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Kindergarten Teacher (coming to Netflix on Oct. 12) thinking you will be watching a cute story about an experienced, if slightly jaded, kindergarten teacher who fights to ensure that the work of one of her exceptionally gifted student's is shared with the world. As with many of Gyllenhaal's projects, this is a dark story about a teacher crossing many ethical lines to siphon art from a child. It also takes a familiar trope, the “white savior narrative,” and uses it to take this story to unsettling places.

After seen the film at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, I feel it's important we talk about how The Kindergarten Teacher needs to be watched with a cautious, keen eye.

More: October Movies We're Most Excited For

Lisa Spinelli (Gyllenhaal) spends her days watching kindergarteners color and her nights taking poetry classes at the community college. She seems good at one and achingly mediocre at the other. Her family seems quite normal — which is exactly the problem. Her husband is average, her kids are only interested in partying and social media, and she doesn’t appear to have any actual friends in her life. But Lisa yearns for art and meaningful expression. Then she meets 5-year-old Jimmy Roy.

Still of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Parker Sevak in 'The Kindergarten Teacher'

Jimmy is a kindergartener with a remarkable ability to recite beautiful original poetry that, as is clear from her night class, Lisa is incapable of. Lisa begins to find meaning in her life through little Jimmy, played by Parker Sevak, who is of South Asian descent. While Lisa’s obsession with Jimmy is appropriately portrayed as deeply creepy, the story’s framing is one we’ve seen before. Movies like Freedom Writers or Dangerous Minds show white teachers who are the only ones with the capacity to see what’s special about their students of color and make it their mission to rescue them. This is also Lisa’s seemingly noble cause that she takes to the extreme. While these types of stories — called the “white savior narrative” — end up being inspiration porn for the mostly white audiences they are created for, The Kindergarten Teacher takes that narrative at its most literal.

There are moments in The Kindergarten Teacher when Lisa's behavior will likely provoke a strong reaction from viewers. At various points in the film, Lisa takes Jimmy into the school bathroom during nap time to coax him into reciting more of his poems. In the middle of an intimate encounter with her husband, she hastily pushes him aside to answer a call from Jimmy so she can write down one of his poems. Her thirst for Jimmy’s art, her desire to both nurture it and claim it for herself, causes her to spiral into predator territory. The Kindergarten Teacher also, perhaps unintentionally, takes the white savior trope and shows you how it often comes off to most audiences of color: not that heartwarming.

Still of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Parker Sevak in 'The Kindergarten Teacher'

Lisa claims no one in Jimmy’s life is interested in his poems. His father doesn’t care, Jimmy’s mother is out of the picture, and he has a vapid babysitter. The only one who does seem to care is his uncle — who is preoccupied with a job that overworks and underpays him. But Jimmy isn’t exactly alone in the world. Lisa just believes she is the only one who will artistically nourish this extraordinary brown boy. And this is where the white savior narrative comes into play. What would he do without her? She doesn’t take into account that he is only 5 and will have plenty of time and plenty of other people to find ways to nurture his art — or not.

More: Fall TV Premiere Dates You Need to Know About

The Kindergarten Teacher is an adaptation of an Israeli film in which both teacher and student are Israeli, so the film’s use of this trope may be accidental. It's also possible that director Sara Colangelo may not have been thinking of the racial dynamics when casting Sevak — but it only amplifies the disquieting nature of Lisa’s relationship with Jimmy.

The Kindergarten Teacher is a disturbing but riveting psychological thriller, as you'll end up wanting to know how far Lisa will go with Jimmy and become increasingly concerned for his safety.

As a final thought, consider this: while the use of the white savior narrative works in certain moments in the film, why couldn’t this adaptation dare to reinvent the parameters of the film in such a way that it more deeply explores the relationships between race, gender, age and power within the teacher-student dynamic?

Top Chef Contestant Fatima Ali Reveals She Has Terminal Cancer

Cancer affects millions of people. According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 1,735,350 new cases will be diagnosed each year — in the United States alone. And it appears Top Chef contestant Fatima Ali is one of 1.7 million.

In fact, Ali recently revealed she isn't just battling cancer, she is facing terminal cancer, and doctors have given her a year to live.

More: Netflix's Creepy Cooking Show With Puppets Is Perfect for Halloween

Ali first opened up about her cancer diagnosis in 2017. The chef was treated for Ewing's sarcoma shortly after filming the Bravo reality series. And while the treatment was initially deemed a success, in September 2018, Ali learned her cancer had returned, and this time, there was nothing doctors could do to help her.

Now the chef wants to talk about what comes next. In a moving, poignant and very personal essay for Bon Appétit, Ali opened up about her diagnosis and what she is doing with the time she has left.

"The cancer cells my doctors believed had vanished are back with a vengeance in my left hip and femur bone," Ali wrote. "My oncologist has told me that I have a year to live, with or without the new chemotherapy regimen. I was looking forward to being 30, flirty, and thriving. Guess I have to step it up on the flirting. I have no time to lose."

Ali also explained that she plans to eat her way through New York and to enjoy the little things in life.

"It’s funny, isn’t it? When we think we have all the time in the world to live, we forget to indulge in the experiences of living. When that choice is yanked away from us, that’s when we scramble to feel. I am desperate to overload my senses in the coming months, making reservations at the world’s best restaurants, reaching out to past lovers and friends, and smothering my family, giving them the time that I so selfishly guarded before."

Of course, it is hard to imagine what Ali is going through, especially if you have not been there or walked alongside someone in the midst of a terminal illness. And while these words seem so inadequate, we wish Ali all the joy, peace and happiness life can possibly bring: today, tomorrow and always.

Dakota Johnson Responds to Those Pregnancy Rumors on The Ellen DeGeneres Show

How do you dispel pregnancy rumors? If you're Dakota Johnson, you go on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and use humor to shut down any ideas people may have about whether or not you're expecting. On Thursday, Johnson appeared on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show, where she made the most perfect comment about rumors that she's having a child with boyfriend Chris Martin.

DeGeneres introduced the topic when she jokingly said, "This is Thursday, but Monday, it came out that you were pregnant. So I'm just saying, how's that going?" Johnson was quick to inform DeGeneres' audience — both in the studio and at home — that "the only thing I'm pregnant with is a lot of really good ideas, but not any babies."

Johnson told DeGeneres that during her birthday party on Monday, an accident apparently led onlookers to believe she was throwing a gender-reveal party. According to Entertainment Tonight, a representative for Johnson also confirmed that the party was merely to celebrate her birthday, not impending motherhood.

"It was my birthday, and there were balloons that happened to be pink and blue, and so then I was pregnant,” Johnson told DeGeneres. "I didn’t know that the balloons were gonna be released. They were just in an arch, but I guess that accidentally happened — one of the ends just got let go.”

"A lot of people congratulated me," Johnson admitted, then revealed that the whole snafu has led to some awkward conversations about her birthday. "That's the other thing," Johnson said. "Now I have to be like, 'It was just my birthday,' and then all the people that I didn't invite to my birthday know that I had a birthday party."

Apparently, DeGeneres was one of the people who weren't invited, despite the fact that Johnson was at her 60th birthday party in February. Johnson said she wasn't actually invited to DeGeneres' birthday party, though: “I think I kind of crashed your birthday party. I came just as arm candy."

DeGeneres indirectly referenced Martin and said she invited him solely so she could see Johnson. "I knew you’d be with him,” DeGeneres said. "I didn’t have your number at the time which is why I invited him." She noted that now, she and Johnson can just call each other directly.

Johnson and Martin have reportedly been dating for nearly a year, though they've yet to go public with their relationship. Comedy aside, we're glad Johnson was able to address these pregnancy rumors directly and put an end to the madness.

How Crazy Rich Asians Helped Me Understand My Mom Better

0
0

Warning: Spoilers for Crazy Rich Asians ahead.

When I was 4, my mom sometimes let my brother and me eat dinner outside. Wearing silk pajamas and rubber flip-flops, she sat on the stoop by our sliding-glass door as I rode my tricycle on the pavement under our patio. After each loop, she rewarded us with a spoonful of thit kho, soft caramelized pork with braised boiled eggs, which she scooped onto a mound of sauce-soaked rice. I biked until there wasn’t a grain of rice left in the bowl, and my mom would call me inside.

There’s a scene in Crazy Rich Asians — which recently broke records to become the most popular summer rom-com in a decade — that reminds me of my mom. In the first 10 minutes of the movie, Eleanor Young, a matriarch of one of Singapore’s wealthiest families, is racially profiled by a hotel manager, who denies her and her family their suite and tells them to “try Chinatown.” Eleanor responds by buying the hotel. The scene ends with Eleanor gliding across the lobby to celebrate her purchase while her 8-year-old son Nick (who becomes the star of the love story) looks over his shoulder and smirks at the dumbfounded manager.

Crazy Rich Asians

Like Nick, I worshipped my mom growing up. I was kicked out of three preschools because of how much I cried when she dropped me off. I savored the soup crackers from her lunch that she saved for me every day. I watched as my mom stood up to white women who were taller and spoke better English than her when she felt she was wronged. She taught me how to haggle and never settle for anything less than 20 percent off an already-on-sale item. In malls, I followed her around like a puppy, and she was the first person I went to when I learned of any gossip about my aunties. We bonded over clearance racks and shit-talking, but our favorite pastime was watching romantic comedies.

It didn’t matter what the rom-com was or how bad the reviews were — we loved them all. We swooned when Matthew McConaughey professed his love for Kate Hudson on the Manhattan Bridge in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and our hearts fluttered when James Marsden pulled Katherine Heigl into a kiss in 27 Dresses. For us, there were only two criteria that mattered in a rom-com: beautiful clothes and the end-of-the-movie kiss. The latter was always my mom’s favorite scene, but when I was little, she wouldn’t let me watch that part. So I turned away from the screen and watched my mom instead. As the romantic leads reunited and the music swelled, her face beamed. Even when I was old enough to watch the end-of-movie make-out, I often still turned my gaze to my mom, and no matter what, she always lit up with the same smile. Inevitably, the end-of-movie-kiss became my favorite scene too.

Crazy Rich Asians

Somewhere in middle school, my relationship with my mom crumbled. Pressure mounted for me to pursue a career she approved of. When I didn’t want to be a doctor, she told me to be a lawyer. When I didn’t want to be a lawyer, she told me to pursue business. When I told her I wanted to be a writer, she told me that was a profession “for white people” and cried and begged me to change my mind. She compared me to the “obedient” children of her friends and accused me of not loving her and my dad anymore. I resented them for it. I resented that I wasn’t allowed to go to the mall without a chaperone until I was 16. I hated staying home studying during winter breaks and spending my Saturdays in math tutoring and SAT classes.

Eventually, my favorite traits about my mom became annoyances: her obsession with saving, how she would cook the same five Vietnamese dishes for dinner, how she would brag about me to her friends. When I moved to college, I started keeping secrets from her. I didn’t tell her I was writing for the school newspaper and that I was good at it. I didn’t share the fact that I was gay and had a boyfriend. To this day, my mom has never read anything I’ve written, and when her friends ask what I do, she changes the subject or sometimes tells them I’m in advertising. We don’t talk much anymore, but when we do, it usually leads into a lecture or her imploring me to apply to business school.

Crazy Rich Asians

About a month ago, my mom texted me telling me she wanted to see the movie Crazy Rich Asians. I replied, promising to take her during my next visit home. A couple of weeks later, we settled into two plush armchairs at our local AMC and watched the first movie my mom had seen in theaters since she took me to Mulan when I was 3. After the first 10 minutes, when a Mandarin jazz song played over the title card, I could tell my mom was all in. Every so often, I looked over and caught her smiling: when four friends bonded over satay and laksa at a night market, when a wedding guest emerged from a limo in a blue tulle dress, when a bride walked down an aisle flanked by water and lanterns to the tune of “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

When it was time for my mom’s favorite scene, I looked over at her and watched her eyes widen when the leading man proposed to his girlfriend in an airplane aisle. Nick opened a box to reveal a beautiful black diamond ring and pulled his fiancée into a kiss as passengers cheered and a Mandarin cover of “Yellow” played in the background. My mom was all but swooning in her seat.

I had seen Crazy Rich Asians three times before, but watching it with my mom was different. Not only did it hit every note we look for in a rom-com — gorgeous costumes, a last-minute bid to win the beloved back — it was the first time we’d seen one with characters who spoke in accented English and looked like us. My mom watched these kinds of movies for years in Vietnamese-translated Korean dramas, but never had she — or I — seen a blockbuster production in a theater starring actors like Michelle Yeoh, who my mom had seen dozens of times in Chinese films.

My mom didn’t need me to summarize certain scenes when the English was too fast like she often did in American rom-coms. She understood every word. She even explained to me the final mah-jongg scene, which I didn’t understand until reading an article about it. “See, your mom is smart,” she told me over a bowl of pho the next day. I heard her rave about the movie to my aunties, gushing over the film’s opening scene and spoiling every detail for her friends.

Crazy Rich Asians

I learned something about my mom from the movie too. I recognized elements of my mom’s and my relationship in Eleanor and Nick’s dynamic: the mom’s overprotectiveness, the son moving to New York to get some space, the parental obsession of controlling the child’s life. I remembered reading a quotation from one of the film’s writers, Adele Lim, in The Hollywood Reporter: “This hold that parents have on their children is a specifically Asian thing. It presents itself in really aggressive ways sometimes, but it comes from a place of deep devotion.”

Like a lot of Asian parents, my mom was strict. Though I didn’t always agree with her — indeed, I often resented her for it — I now understand better that this was my mom’s form of love. Crazy Rich Asians made me reflect on the sacrifices my mom made for our family and on the ways she showed her devotion that I never recognized before.

Crazy Rich Asians

I don’t expect insights from Crazy Rich Asians — or any movie for that matter — to completely fix my relationship with my mom. She still suggests that I apply to business school, and I still tell her no. We still don’t talk as often as we used to, but when we do, we have a new interest that’s specific to us. We talk shit about my aunties who haven’t seen Crazy Rich Asians, and I ask her questions about the movie that I already know the answers to just so we have something to talk about. It reminds me of how things used to be with my mom when I was younger, and for now, that’s good enough.

Jessica Biel Is Bringing the Popular Podcast Limetown to Television

Calling all creepy crime fans! Facebook Watch is readying to air a 10-episode adaptation of the fictional podcast Limetown, which follows the journalistic format of Serial but features content more akin to The X-Files. Now Jessica Biel has signed on to executive produce and star as the lead character in the series, which has us even more excited to see the project realized in a visual format.

According to Refinery29, there's no official release date for the TV series yet, but we do know some details. Biel will star as investigative journalist Lia Haddock, who works for American Public Radio in the podcast. She is attempting to uncover what happened to the population of Limetown, Tennessee, most of whom disappeared in the early aughts during an event known as the Panic. Haddock interviews survivors of the town as she tries to get to the bottom of what happened, which leads her down a rabbit hole of mind control, murder and more.

Biel is no stranger to frightening TV content. She also stars in The Sinner, a similarly creepy series that follows a detective who returns to his hometown to investigate why a child murdered his parents in cold blood, seemingly with no motive. Then, of course, things get really weird.

For fans who just can't wait to see Limetown on the small screen, there's good news. The second season of the podcast is slated to premiere on Halloween, which is appropriate for the content. Plus, cocreators Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, together with author Cote Smith, wrote a prequel novel that covers how Lia Haddock first learned of the Panic as a student journalist. The book is slated for release on Nov. 13, 2018, and is sure to be as frightening as the podcast itself.

Biel hasn't commented on social media about her new roles in the Limetown TV series, but needless to say, we're pretty excited for this development.

Justin Trudeau Just Shared a Sweet Photo of His Daughter in Honor of #DayoftheGirl

Oct. 11 is International Day of the Girl Child, which, according to the official U.S. website for the day, is a day created by the United Nations “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” And while we firmly believe every day should be Day of the Girl — roughly half the population is female, after all — we also appreciate the aim of this singular day and those who embrace it. One of our favorite celebrators this year? Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Early today on Instagram, Trudeau posted a touching tribute to his daughter — and all women.

More: 5 Things You Can Do to Honor International Day of the Girl Child With Your Kids

The post, which was written in both English and French, read, "Today is about our daughters, granddaughters, sisters & nieces. It’s about making sure they grow up in a world where their voices are heard & they have the support they need to chase down their dreams."

The caption was accompanied by a photo of Trudeau's daughter sitting with her feet up on Dad's desk.

Of course, Trudeau has long supported women's rights (how rare for the leader of a North American nation, right?). When he became prime minister in 2015, Trudeau was the first Canadian PM to equally balance his cabinet — with 15 men and 15 women. And earlier this year, he gave an impassioned speech about gender and social equality at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He is also credited for a 2018 pay raise to help close the pay gap between male and female workers.

More: Justin Trudeau's Response to the Question of Gender Balance Is Perfect

The battle for parity and fairness is nothing new. Women have long fought for equal rights — in the U.S., Canada and certainly beyond. But it's imperative that men (both national leaders and regular Joes) continue to use their privilege to lift up women's voices: because real change can only happen when we involve both sides.

The Alexa of the Future Will Be Able to Tell if You Are Sick

0

Technology is a phenomenal thing. It allows us to call anyone, anytime, anywhere with the push of a button or a simple swipe or tap. It gives doctors the ability to diagnose previously undiagnosable conditions — and to treat them much in the same way — and we all have the ability to share information in an instant. But a new patent is looking to radically alter how we use technology.

According to The Telegraph, the patent, filed by Amazon, is for a new version of Alexa, a version that can (and would) automatically detect when you are ill and then offer you tips, tricks and advice.

More: How to Tell if You Have a Common Cold or a Full-Blown Case of the Flu

The proposed feature would analyze a user's voice, i.e., their tone and tenor, to determine if they are sick. The device would also listen for other telltale signs of illness, like a cough and/or sneeze and would then make a "diagnosis."

What's even weirder is that the patent shows a feature that also allows Alexa to track your emotions. Apparently, the device can tell if you’re feeling bored and tired by the sound of your voice. And while determining if you are sick or bored is one thing, the device will then suggest things to do, healthy foods to consume and/or cold-relieving products you can buy, like cough drops, which would — of course — be ordered through Amazon.

More: 13 Things You Never Realized Alexa Could Help You Do

It is important to note that Amazon’s filing does mean the company is or will be working to implement any of the aforementioned features anytime soon. But this new version of Alexa is definitely on the drawing board and an interesting preview of the next generation of smart home devices.

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard Slam Star Magazine Over Rumors About Their Sex Life

Here's how you know you've messed with the wrong Hollywood power couple: when your email about their supposed sex life ends up on both of their Instagram accounts, with their celebrity friends weighing in on the nonsense. When Dax Shepard got an email from a reporter at Star allegedly requesting a comment from his wife, Kristen Bell, on their sex life, he shut it down—publicly.

More: Kristen Bell's Sex Talk With Her Daughters Wasn't Quite a Home Run

According to Entertainment Tonight, on Thursday, Oct. 10, Shepard received an email from the tabloid newspaper Star that read, "Star is working on a story in which a source says that Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have discussed having a threesome and toyed with other kinky things, like S&M and role playing. Sources say that Kristen believes this is insurance against marital meltdown." The writer requested that if Shepard or Bell wanted to comment, they had until 12 p.m. Thursday to do so.

Shepard opted to post a screenshot of the email on Instagram, not to kink-shame, but to reflect on the absurdity of a possible "marital meltdown." He wrote, "The only offensive thing about this bullshit story is that @kristenanniebell isn't doing all this kinkiness out of horniness, but rather a desperate attempt to save her marriage. I think we all know Bell is a lot more gangster than that." He added, "I'll now give you until 4PM to comment, Star."

Bell later reposted the screenshot with Shepard's caption. She added her own comment, as well: "Id [sic] love to comment, but its hard to talk with this ball gag in!"

Meanwhile, per ET, the couple's friend David K. Harbour waded into the comments on Shepard's original post. Harbour wrote, "Can we role play that I'm the publicist that sent this and you guys come to my house really mad but then we wind up in a threesome? Dialog is up for grabs, just a general structure. We probably need a third act too where we go on an adventure to solve climate change together to make it really sing for me, but it's a start."

More: How Shirtless Dax Shepard Just Became the Internet's No. 1 Dad Beast

This is hardly the first time that Shepard and Bell have had to shut down comments about their marriage in the press. As recently as September, Shepard defended Bell for occasionally vaping marijuana around him, even though he's 14 years sober. These two tend to keep things pretty real from what we can tell and while we can't possibly know what goes on behind the scenes, their relationship seems solid. So perhaps the tabloids can back off for a bit.

Apparently, American Cheese Is Dead, & of Course Millennials Are Being Blamed

0

American cheese has long been seen as a household staple, much like hamburgers, hot dogs, peanut butter and white bread. But it seems the sliced product responsible for making many ooey, gooey sandwiches may have met its match.

According to a new Bloomberg report, American cheese consumption is down. Way down. And millennials are to blame.

More: Meat & Cheese Might Actually Make Your Heart Healthier (& We Couldn't Be Happier)

Of course, it is a little unfair to blame millennials and millennials alone. Many fast-food chains — like Wendy's, A&W and Panera Bread — are now offering other types of cheese, like Gouda, fontina, Asiago and real cheddar. This shift has had a huge impact on cheese sales: Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which sells the 500-pound barrels of cheddar used to make American cheese, is currently offering a record discount on 40-pound blocks of cheese.

Sara Burnett, Panera Bread's director of wellness and food policy, told Bloomberg American cheese is “an ingredient we’re looking to less and less in our pantry."

Honestly, we are totally not surprised. Of course, this could be due to one writer's bias — and the fact she had to eat mustard and American cheese sandwiches as a child — but we also think the change has a lot to do with the changing cheese industry.

Most Americans are demanding healthier choices, and American cheese — a highly processed cheese that is riddled with preservatives — doesn't really fit the bill.

So what are makers of the orange-ish product to do? Well, companies like Kraft are trying to reinvent themselves and promote the other benefits of their product. For instance, “the melt.”

More: Fruit-Shaped Trix Are Coming Back — & Our Inner Kid Is Overjoyed

“Honestly, you can’t get that in a natural cheese,” Peter Cotter, general manager of cheese and dairy for Kraft Heinz Co., told Bloomberg. “It’s a very unique product. The creamy smooth texture and melt of the cheese. The natural cheeses, they just don’t melt that way," which is true. But Kraft and other purveyors of American cheese are certainly facing an uphill battle.

Julia Roberts Gets Candid on Turning 50 (& Loving it) in an Interview With Oprah

Julia Roberts graces the November cover of Harper's Bazaar, wearing an evening gown and a pair of sneakers while she climbs up the side of a rock. The issue is themed around the concept of daring, which for Roberts is a concept that extends well beyond her fear of heights and into her life as a whole—something she says, now that she's into her 50s, is changing all the time.

More: Julia Roberts Slams a Troll Perfectly, Proves She’s Already Ruling Instagram

In conversation with Oprah Winfrey for the magazine, Roberts said her actual 50th birthday was pretty perfect. She and her husband went on a small, private getaway. "It was just the two of us, and there was a point where I thought, 'Gosh, this is kind of weird,'" Roberts said. "Not being all together with the kids, the five of us, for my birthday. I was kind of like, 'Huh. Maybe I didn’t think this all the way through.'"

However, Roberts' family had something special up their sleeve. On the day of her actual birthday, her husband and her kids worked together to surprise her: "We went into this surf shop, and I go to the bathroom in the back of the store, and I come out and Danny’s standing there holding a surfboard, and he goes, 'What do you think of this one?' I said, 'That’s a big board. What is that for?' He moves it, and all three kids are standing behind it. I could burst into tears thinking about it. ... That’s what getting older is about—it’s about turning even more into the person your loved ones know you to be."

Roberts said that her recent foray into Instagram was prompted by her kids, who thought it would be cool if she joined the social media platform. She also admitted that comments on a photo posted by her niece, fellow actress Emma Roberts, made her feel for teenagers who are growing up in a social-media-laden atmosphere.

"[T]he number of people who felt absolutely required to talk about how terrible I looked in the picture.... I was amazed at how that made me feel," Roberts said. "I’m a 50-year-old woman and I know who I am, and still my feelings got hurt. I was sad that people couldn’t see the point of it, the sweetness of it, the absolute shining joy of that photo. I thought, 'What if I was 15?'"

In a similar vein, Roberts said that she is constantly seeking to learn more about the environment in which her kids are growing up. "Danny and I really don’t know what it’s like to be a teenager today. Sometimes my kids ask me things and I just say to them, 'I’m going to say no, and I’m going to look into it because I don’t even know what we’re talking about,'" she admitted.

While it's hard to believe that Roberts is now in her early 50s, it is easy to understand how she's become one of the most legendary figures alive in Hollywood today. Her vulnerability, even in this one interview, is unparalleled.

Steve Carell Thinks a Reboot of The Office Won't Work — Here's Why

The Office may occupy some of our hearts forever, but admittedly some of its humor doesn't age particularly well. Now that the series is streaming on Netflix, creating a resurgence of love for it after five years off the air, there have been rumors of a possible reboot floating around—but series star Steve Carell, who played the problematic character Michael Scott, doesn't think that's a good idea.

More: John Krasinski's Fave Episode of The Office Is Probably Your Fave Too

In an interview with Esquire, Carell said that, first and foremost, he doesn't think rebooting The Office is a good idea. Beyond that, "it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted ten years ago. The climate’s different," he said.

Carell continued, "I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior. I mean, he’s certainly not a model boss. A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now."

He acknowledged that in the current climate, "inappropriate behavior" doesn't get the same laughs it once did, which a character like Michael Scott relies on to keep the content flowing. "There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today—which is good, for sure," Carell said. "But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”

Rumors of a possible reboot have been swirling since at least 2017, with many members of the cast including John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer saying they'd be open to the idea. Carell just isn't that into it. "I've never thought of it as a good idea," Carell told Time magazine. "I think it existed in that time and with those people and it felt right. There was something so special about it, and I guess it's an odd way to put it, but I love it too much to ever want to do it again. It's too special to me in my heart in that period of time."

So, if an Office reboot does make its way past headlines and into the writing room anytime soon, Michael Scott won't be making a return. In a post-#MeToo era, that might be for the best.
