Carrie Underwood Proudly Shows Close-Up of Scar in Flashback Photo

It took some time, but Carrie Underwood finally feels confident enough to share close-ups that show her facial scar — one she sustained after taking a nasty spill on the steps of her Nashville home last year.

On Friday, Underwood took to Instagram to share a throwback shot that puts her battle scar on full display. “#FBF to filming the love Wins music video,” Underwood captioned the selfie.

In the video, which was released in September, Underwood’s scar isn’t visible. But in this behind-the-scenes peek, you can clearly see the faint lines above the 35-year-old country singer’s lips left behind by lacerations she suffered during her November 2017 fall.

At the time, Underwood was taking her dogs out when she slipped on the steps and fell. In addition to her facial injuries, which required more than 40 stitches, Underwood broke her wrist and had to undergo surgery on it.

Although Underwood shared news of her accident with fans in January, it wasn’t until this August that she posted a photo prominently showing her scar.

Because Underwood had warned fans she “might look different” when she emerged from her self-imposed absence from social media, many people sadly accused the singer of using her accident as an excuse for plastic surgery.

“I wish I’d gotten some awesome plastic surgery to make this [scar] look better,” she told Redbook earlier this year. “But I try not to worry too much about it. My mom will be like, ‘Did you see they are saying this about you?’ And I’ll be like, ‘Mama, I don’t care. I’m just trying to raise my son and live my life.’”

Underwood’s new selfie suggests the star is putting that troubled chapter in the past and moving forward — which makes sense, considering how much she has to look forward to.
Her career is white hot, for starters. In September, Underwood’s “Cry Pretty” made country music history by debuting at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

That same week, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

But arguably even more exciting for the country music superstar is she’ll soon gain another very special groupie. In early August, Underwood announced she and husband Mike Fisher are expecting another child.

Bradley Whitford Will Reprise His Role in Season 3 of The Handmaid's Tale

Sadly, we still have to wait until next year for another installment of Hulu’s hit series The Handmaid’s Tale. However, fans do have an exciting bit of news to feast on for sustenance in the meantime — per Deadline, Bradley Whitford is set to resume his role as Commander Joseph Lawrence in Season 3.

Whitford, whose character was introduced in Season 2 as one of the original architects of Gilead, has reportedly secured a one-year deal to star as a series regular.

More: Everything You Can Expect to See in Handmaid's Tale Season 3

The Emmy-winning actor shook things up last season when Alexis Bledel’s Emily was assigned to be his eccentric character’s handmaid. While it was unclear at first what Commander Lawrence’s agenda was, it became abundantly clear when — spoiler alert! — Emily attacked Aunt Lydia (presumably killing her, although we can’t be sure yet).

In the moments that followed, Command Lawrence carted Emily off to a secret rendezvous spot. She thought she was driving to certain death, but it tuned out that the commander had arranged for Emily, June and June’s newborn to escape.

Of course, that’s not quite how things played out. At the last minute, June sent her child with Emily. She stayed behind, one can assume to both stay close to her older daughter and help bring down Gilead for good.

So, what does Whitford’s return as a series regular mean for The Handmaid’s Tale?

Well, let’s start with the obvious hope — Commander Lawrence will become a driving force in the rebellion, albeit behind the scenes. Since June’s fate is currently in the air and Emily will no longer be around, perhaps Commander Lawrence will request June as his new handmaid. Then the two could work together.

But this is Gilead, and when are things ever that easy? it seems unlikely the show would make it that easy for June to have such a strong ally within Gilead.

If nothing else, though, it stands to reason Commander Lawrence will at least help June in the sense that he is trying to take down Gilead as a whole.

It would also be nice if Whitford’s continued presence on the show means we’ll get to see more about the making of Gilead. Sure, we’ve gotten glimpses here and there through flashbacks of Serena and Commander Waterford, but that’s pretty much the extent of our knowledge.

How instrumental was Commander Lawrence? And what made him turn against the very “republic” he helped to create? Hopefully these — and many more — questions will be answered in Season 3 now that we know Whitford is on board for another year.

Past Outfits Meghan Markle Can’t Wear Anymore Now That She’s Royalty

Meghan Markle has been a member of the British royal family for some time now, so we thought it was as good a time as any to look back on her old outfits — and the looks we’ll never see her wear again now that she’s the Duchess of Sussex. (R.I.P., her ripped jeans.)

More: 10 Royal Beauty & Fashion Traditions Meghan Markle Has Already Broken

Meghan has worn some memorable looks since she became engaged to Prince Harry, but aside from a messy bun here and there, they all follow the same traditional royal trend: modest necklines, stockings, nothing too flashy. But Meghan's style wasn’t always like this. When she was an actor on Suits, Meghan wore tons of interesting clothes and beauty looks, from midriff-exposing dresses to gothic nail polish. And though we’ll likely never see her in anything similar again, it’s still fun to look back on her royal rules-breaking outfits that wouldn’t fly today.

Ripped jeans

Denim isn’t banned in the royal household, but it’s definitely not preferred. According to the BBC, men usually wear khakis if it’s a casual dress code, while women wear trousers or day dresses — though, if it’s an extra low-key occasion, such as out walking the dog, jeans are fine. Likewise, the royals’ clothes are supposed to be neat and put together, meaning that Meghan’s ripped jeans from the 2017 Invictus Games in September 2017 (before she and Harry were even engaged) wouldn’t fly today.

Dark nail polish

Though there’s nothing wrong with Meghan’s clothes in these two outfits, you likely won’t see her wearing the entire looks again — and that’s because of her nail polish. Under Queen Elizabeth II’s rule, the nails of royal women are to be kept clean and natural-looking, meaning Meghan will likely never wear non-nude nail polishes again. For the most part, the royals stick to nail polish colors such as pale pinks and taupes, so these pics are likely the last you’ll see her with such dark nail polish on her fingers.

Any outfit without pantyhose

Before she was a royal, Meghan showed her bare legs more often than not. Now, it’s the opposite. It’s a well-known rule that royal women are prohibited from showing their bare legs and must wear pantyhose. Meghan already broke the rule once when she didn’t wear stockings for her engagement announcement, but you likely won’t see her flaunting her legs like in the pictures below again.

Showing her midriff

Like sleeveless outfits and showing her shoulders (more on that later), outfits in which one’s midriff is showing is almost unheard of in the royal family. Most of their clothes are modest, knee-length with their skin covered up. So the chances Meghan will get a lot of use out of her crop tops and belly-baring outfits like the ones below are next to none.

Bright-colored outfits

Aside from a recent yellow dress, Meghan hasn’t worn many bright colors since becoming a royal, and there’s a reason. Bright colors are usually reserved for Queen Elizabeth II, who is often seen in coats and dresses in vibrant hues, such as lime green and baby blue. The queen often wears bright colors to differentiate herself from the public and stand out in a crowd. And though Meghan has worn at least one bright-colored outfit since she accepted her royal title, don’t expect her to ever wear something bright when she’s out with the queen.

Clothes with brand names on them

The royals are notoriously nonpartisan and are prohibited from voting. This year, at the 2018 BAFTA Awards, Kate Middleton, aka Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, created a stir when she wore green instead of black in support of Time’s Up. Because they are to remain nonpartisan (whether it’s politics or business), you won’t see a royal wearing name brands on their clothes. Likewise, you won’t see the royals participating in sponsored events, such as when Markle played in the DirecTV Beach Bowl wearing a DirecTV jersey in February 2014.

Wearing all black, especially in the daytime

Though black isn’t prohibited, it isn’t usually worn, especially in the daytime. According to Alexandra Messervy, a royal expert for InStyle, black clothing is usually not worn by royals.

“Generally it is thought that black is not usually worn unless in mourning, although Diana Princess of Wales did occasionally wear it for evening functions, and The Duchess of Cambridge has been known to do so,” Messervy said.

So far, Meghan has worn all black once for a daytime engagement. “I note that there was a bit of an outcry recently when Ms. Markle wore black for a daytime event,” Messervy said. Word is still out on whether she’ll do it again.

Sleeveless & off-the-shoulder

As some might remember, there was a huge bout of shoulder-shaming when Meghan wore a shoulders-baring dress for the queen’s birthday parade in June 2018. Since then, Meghan has kept her shoulders covered, though she is known to wear sleeveless outfits from time to time. If she becomes more traditional, expect her to cleanse her closet of both looks, as it isn’t known for royals to show so much skin. “They don’t usually wear sleeveless dresses and they usually wear clothes which are not too short in the hemline because of bending down and sitting in public,” Messervy told InStyle.

This Is the Difference Between Food Intolerance & Food Allergies

0
0

These days, it seems like just about everyone is following a special diet. From gluten and lactose intolerances to peanut and shellfish allergies, it appears no food is safe when it comes to our health.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of indigestion and nausea post-meal, you might wonder whether you fall into one of those categories yourself. But you might also be wondering what the difference is between a food intolerance and a food allergy.

Food intolerances vs. food allergies

“People often come to my office with concerns for food allergy and intolerance not knowing that there is a difference,” Dr. Kathleen Dass, an allergy immunologist at Michigan Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Center, tells SheKnows. “A food allergy is mediated by the immune system and can occur with even tiny amounts of food. Patients with true food allergy cannot eat the food they are allergic to. On the other hand, food intolerance is not mediated by the immune system. Symptoms are usually predictable and the same with each ingestion.”

Common food intolerances include lactose intolerance, celiac disease, fructose intolerance, alcohol dehydrogenase deficiency, sulfite sensitivity and sometimes dye sensitivity, Dass explains. Common food allergies include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.

While the symptoms of a food intolerance and food allergy can be similar, the key difference between the two comes down to life or death. An intolerance might make your belly ache, but an allergy can kill you. Both can cause vomiting, diarrhea and bloating, but an allergy can also affect the skin in some way.

“Food intolerances usually can cause bloating, diarrhea, nausea or upset stomach. Some people also complain of headaches or fatigue,” Dr. Purvi Parikh, allergist/immunologist with Allergy & Asthma Network, tells SheKnows. “A food allergy almost always has some type of skin involvement — like rash, itching, swelling — and can be accompanied by coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, dizziness or loss of consciousness.”

Diagnosis & treatment

Knowing the difference is key when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. To determine if you have a food intolerance vs. food allergy, Dass recommends having an evaluation by an allergist/immunologist.

“A thorough history should be taken to find out the symptoms fit a description for allergy or intolerance," she says. "After that, your allergist may recommend skin testing. Sometimes, the skin testing for food can be falsely positive. This is where having the history is helpful.”

After skin testing, your allergist may want to do blood tests because sometimes, there may be still be a question of food allergy vs. food intolerance. Your allergist may recommend an oral food challenge, where you eat incrementally larger amounts of the food in question under medical supervision followed by close monitoring, Dass says.

Once diagnosed, Parikh says food intolerances aren't dangerous like food allergies, so you may not need to avoid the food completely. She says that sometimes, eating less of a food or trying it in a different form can help; for example, people who are lactose-intolerant may be able to eat yogurt or cheese but not milk. "A simple rule of thumb is: If you feel better without it, avoid it," she adds.

However, if you are diagnosed with a food allergy, both Parikh and Dass say you most certainly should avoid that particular food. While it is possible to outgrow some food allergies, Parikh says there is no guarantee. “It is dangerous to keep eating [something] you are allergic to, as reactions can get worse on subsequent exposures,” she explains.

Dass also recommends having an emergency plan of action if you have a food allergy, including knowing how to use an auto-injectable epinephrine device (e.g., an EpiPen). “Make sure to notify any waitstaff at restaurants of your food allergy and carefully read labels,” she adds.

What the diagnosis means for you

While a diagnosis of food intolerance or allergy may be disappointing, Dass says there is still hope left for those who dream of eating peanut butter sandwiches again. “Because food allergy is increasing in prevalence, more research and advancements are being made,” she says. “We are also learning more about specific components in the food that lead to the food allergy.”

She cites a landmark study called the LEAP study that helped to identify children who are at highest risk for peanut allergy to potentially prevent the allergy from occurring.

"Also, Xolair, a subcutaneous injection, is currently being fast-tracked by the FDA for prevention and treatment of food allergy. While not FDA-approved yet, some allergists are performing oral immunotherapy to desensitize patients to specific foods," she adds.

Maybe someday, peanut butter sandwiches on gluten-y bread can be a reality for those who’ve been doing without. But for now, if you're diagnosed with a food allergy, it's best to avoid it.

I Was Bump-Shamed, & Yes, It Is a Big Deal

0

I'm not Chiara Ferragni or the Duchess of Cambridge, but I've still been on the receiving end of some serious, no-holds-barred bump-shaming. The problem is people don't even realize they shouldn't be doing it. They actually think passing judgment on the shape and size of a woman's body during pregnancy is perfectly acceptable — as much a part of the whole baby-growing experience as, say, heartburn, stockpiling diapers and hearing ridiculous name choices

More: Do Pregnancy "Rules" Really Matter?

You wouldn't greet a nonpregnant friend with, "Oh, my God! Look at the size of you!" would you? You wouldn't typically stare, saucer-eyed and slack-jawed, at her belly. You probably wouldn't declare in front of a houseful of guests, "You're so big, aren't you?"

If you're a decent person with manners, you wouldn't normally say any of these things because 1) it's rude and none of your business, 2) it's probably the quickest way to lose all your friends and 3) you might get punched in the face. But for some reason, such constraint goes out of the window when the recipient is a pregnant woman.

Can't people just say, "Your bump looks great"? Or if they don't think so, keep their mouths shut and talk about something else? I'm more than happy to talk about my heartburn or my swollen ankles.

I saw my midwife last week for my 28-week check, and after she got the stuff that's actually important out of the way (listening to my daughter's heartbeat and checking her movements) she produced a measuring tape.

"I'm just going to measure your bump," she said.

I waited for it. Was my lovely midwife going to be the next person to develop saucer eyes and tell me how massively, gigantically enormous my baby bump is?

"Perfect," she announced, as she plotted my measurement on the chart. "You're in the 50th percentile. You couldn't be more average."

I've never aspired to be "average," but on this occasion, I was delighted. I felt validated. Rather than having a baby bump that was too big or too small to be contained on the chart — as so many self-appointed, dedicated bump-watchers might insist I have — my bump was wonderfully, reassuringly normal. It was crazy to describe it as too big (or too small, for that matter – not that it has ever happened to me personally) when I had all the proof I needed on the chart in front of me.

More: 20 Eco-Friendly Baby Products That Are Good for Your Family & the Planet

I know people's comments about my baby bump are harmless in the grand scheme of things, and it's not as if I have to worry about Ferragni- or duchess-level pregnancy body-shaming. But unwanted remarks on the size of our baby bumps is something far too many women can relate to. My friend Sal was constantly asked if she was having multiple babies when she was pregnant with her son, and when she said, "No, there's definitely just one in there," people didn't believe her. Another friend was pregnant at the same time as her sister and cousin, and at a family party, they were coerced into standing together in a row so everyone else could compare the size of their bumps.

Being pregnant and growing a baby for 40-ish weeks is no picnic, no matter the size of your baby bump. It can be tiring and stressful and emotional — and the last thing a tired, stressful, emotional woman needs to hear is how big she is. I'm sure it's equally frustrating for women with small baby bumps, but when someone tells you you're "so big," it's hard not to take it as an insult. Let's not forget that we live in a fatphobic, sizeist society that celebrates thinness and criticizes anything else.

And if there's one time when a woman cannot possibly succumb to the overwhelming pressure to be slim, it's when she's pregnant. At this stage in my pregnancy, I feel like I'm getting bigger on a daily basis. And so I should be; after all, I'm growing a baby inside my body, and it would be hugely alarming if I were getting smaller.

According to Patricia A. Evans, nurse practitioner and certified nurse midwife at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, there are many reasons for a woman's abdomen to measure particularly large in pregnancy — from the position of the baby to incorrect dating to high amniotic fluid levels to weaker abdominal muscles from previous pregnancies.

"If your OB provider feels your baby is measuring too large, an ultrasound may be ordered to estimate your baby’s weight," says Evans. "But the majority of the time, your baby may simply be on the bigger side and still be healthy and normal."

More: Here's Why You Should Practice Yoga While You're Pregnant

I know my baby is healthy and normal. But it still bugs the hell out of me when people comment on the size of my bump. Because every woman’s body, belly, baby and how she carries her pregnancy is unique — and absolutely none of anyone else's business. Can we all finally agree on that?

Crazy Rich Asians Star Awkwafina's SNL Monologue Had an Important Message

Awkwafina hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend, making history in the process. During her opening monologue, the Crazy Rich Asians star took a moment to reflect on the journey that brought her to this point — becoming only the second Asian American woman ever to host SNL in its 44-season lifespan.

In 2000, revealed Awkwafina, she came to 30 Rockefeller Plaza to see her idol, Lucy Liu. At the time, Awkwafina was an 11-year-old from Queens still going by her given name of Nora Lum. Liu was the first Asian American woman in history to host SNL

“I was a kid and I didn’t have a ticket, so I knew I wasn’t getting in. But I just wanted to be near the building,” Awkwafina said. “And I remember how important that episode was for me and how it totally changed for me what I thought was possible for an Asian American woman.”

The audience cheered, and Awkwafina worked to maintain her composure as the gravitas of the moment became clear.

“Standing here tonight is a dream I never thought would come true. So thank you, Lucy, for opening the door. I wasn’t able to make it in the building back then, but 18 years later, I’m hosting the show,” said Awkwafina before happily shouting out, “I love you, Lucy Liu! Be my friend!”

The fact that Awkwafina was only the second Asian American woman to host SNL wasn’t the only reason her appearance as so profound — it also had much to do with her approach.

In 2000, Liu’s monologue proved to be a product of the time, playing largely on Asian stereotypes. In 2018, Awkwafina’s monologue poked holes in those stereotypes.

She started by introducing herself, noting she was “just your average Asian trumpet player turned rapper turned actress… very stereotypical.”

She also alluded to her NYC upbringing saying, “I’m actually from New York. I grew up in Queens. My dad still lives there. People assume my dad has an accent, and he does. He sounds like Donald Trump, because they’re both old guys from Queens.”

Like Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina's SNL gig bears a lot of cultural significance — both speak to just how much representation matters. And, hopefully, those roles living within a short span of each other mean we’re moving toward programming that is far more inclusive and better reflects our nation’s diversity

It would be a true shame for 18 more years to pass before Asian American girls and young women see another touchstone hosting the iconic sketch series.

The Walking Dead Family Mourns the Passing of Beloved Alum Scott Wilson

Sad news for The Walking Dead family today as veteran actor Scott Wilson has passed away. He was 76 at the time of his death.

“We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Wilson, the incredible actor who played Hershel on #TheWalkingDead, has passed away at the age of 76. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” the show’s verified Twitter account lamented. “Rest in paradise, Scott. We love you!”

Wilson memorably played a farmer and the father of Lauren Cohan’s Maggie on TWD, appearing in more than 30 episodes before being beheaded by the Governor in the fourth season.

In a statement from AMC, the network said, “Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our characters’ choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed.”

They underscored that Hershel was a character who “lived at the emotional core of the show,” and they certainly weren’t wrong about that.

Just yesterday, TVLine reported that Wilson — along with fellow TWD alums Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha) and Jon Bernthal (Shane) — would be making an appearance in Season 9, which premieres tonight.

While there hasn’t been any confirmation as to how the characters plan to return, one would presume given all three characters are dead that they will return in flashback form.

The prevailing theory at this point is that the return of these three fan favorites has something to do with the exit of Rick Grimes, since actor Andrew Lincoln previously announced Season 9 would be his last

According to ComicBook’s Brandon Davis, Wilson’s scenes have already been filmed. It’s unclear, though, whether the scenes will still air in light of news of his passing.

It’s also unclear how this will affect the second season of the Netflix series The OA, in which Wilson plays one of the show’s leads, Abel Johnson.

Halloween can be fraught with endless searching to find the perfect costume for your tiny monster (pun fully intended.) Mark Ruffalo Goes Incognito at New York Comic-Con to Meet Jason Momoa

We’re not the only ones who’d go to great lengths to get a hug from Jason Momoa. At New York Comic-Con this weekend, Mark Ruffalo made his way through the crowd in disguise for that very reason.

It’s not surprising (nor is it new) for a celebrity to attend Comic-Con incognito — with throngs of fans filling the event, there’s no way to make it through without getting mobbed for autographs and photos otherwise.

More: 8 Things to Know About Jason Momoa, & Why We're So Obsessed

So, it’s possible that fans suspected someone famous lurked beneath Ruffalo’s mask of Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls. But many didn't find out until Ruffalo made it to Momoa.

After Ruffalo posed for a photo with Momoa while wearing the mask, the Aquaman star goaded Ruffalo into revealing himself. The two then proceeded to bless the universe with an utterly endearing display of bro-hugging.

Sure, Momoa’s Aquaman lives in the DC universe, rival to the Marvel universe from which Ruffalo’s Hulk hails. But these dudes didn’t let that get in the way of this quality bonding moment courtesy of Comic-Con.

Ruffalo shared the moment on Twitter, posting a short video of himself posing with Momoa before revealing his identity. “Incognito at #NYCC. Grunkle Stan had some fun today,” Ruffalo wrote. “A big thanks to the fans, @javitscenter, and Comic-Con! #gravityfalls.”

Momoa shared the same video on his Instagram account, along with a snapshot of the actors mid-hug.

Of course, being the good sport that he is, Ruffalo did, in fact, pose for fans and sign autographs without his mask on, too.

Momoa and Ruffalo were both at Comic-Con representing their superhero alter-egos, who’ll return to the big screen soon. Momoa’s Aquaman hits theaters on Dec. 21, while Ruffalo will appear next as the Hulk in Avengers 4 next year.

These two are no longer engaged, but it appears there isn't any bad blood between the exes. In several new interviews, Taylor Kinney praised Lady Gaga for her role in A Star Is Born and the success the film has received so far.

The Chicago Fire actor gushed to Entertainment Tonight on Oct. 6, "I’ll tell you that I’m really proud. I don’t know. It’s watching someone live their dream, so, continued success and I hope it keeps climbing. The sky is the limit."

He also told ET, "No, there was no glass ceiling. Ever! She’s always inspiring and I really do — I hope it does really well, and I know it’ll mean the world to her that I think everybody is receptive and yeah, I wish her the best."

The 37-year-old TV star also spoke with Us Weekly about Gaga, where he had nothing but supportive words for the singer. "I couldn’t be more proud," he said on Oct. 7. Kinney also admitted he hadn't seen the film directed by and also starring Bradley Cooper, but he already knows the movie is amazing.

"I know what went into it, it’s been a long time coming … It’s been years … to see what people go through to be in that, you can kind of let the masses make decisions," he said. "But I think I know in my heart it’s gonna be great. And I know that she gave her all."

Kinney also spoke of Cooper and told Us Weekly, "I met Bradley and I know that she was in good hands. I know it’s his directorial debut and I wish all of them the best. I hope it really does really well.”

This isn't the first time Kinney's beamed with pride over Gaga and her achievements since they split in 2016 after five years together and post-getting engaged on Valentine's Day in 2015

While discussing A Star Is Born, he told ET in September 2018 of Gaga's latest accomplishment, "Proud. Only proud. I want it to do really, really well."

Kinney's praise for Gaga is not only amazing, it's refreshing. Even though they are no longer romantically involved, he clearly still wants her to succeed in life and her career. Despite what many people might think, exes don't need to be at odds. His support for Gaga is truly beautiful.

Matcha Is Everywhere Now — Here's How It Can Benefit Your Health

Matcha is having a moment. It's touted for its potent makeup of antioxidants, but is it just another pervasive buzzword slapped onto wellness products amid a budding collective consciousness toward all things organic? Or is matcha as powerful an elixir as it’s perceived?

A central component of Japanese culture, matcha is made from the nutrient-rich green tea leaves of a Camellia sinensis plant. While matcha and green tea are often used interchangeably, green tea generally comes in the form of a tea bag. With matcha, the leaves are steamed, stemmed and stone-ground into a fine powder and then intentionally stored in a space devoid of both light and oxygen to preserve the antioxidant properties. Matcha, therefore, is pure green tea leaf powder that’s far more concentrated.

“Matcha is the Champagne of green tea,” Katherine Swift, founder of OMGTea and the Healthy Life Foundation, tells SheKnows. “If you are going to drink green tea for the health benefits, you might as well drink matcha because you’ll potentially see a much better long-term effect.”

The Japanese have been consuming matcha for 800 years, Swift says, arguing that Japan, therefore, boasts the healthiest population in the world. She's not wrong: The Japanese do indeed live longer than anyone else. There are an estimated 69,785 people at least 100 years old in Japan according to data from Japan's Ministry of Health — and the matcha may play a part.

More: What Is "Golden Milk" & Are There Any Health Benefits?

The number of certain catechins — the antioxidant — in matcha is up to 137 times greater than in other types of green tea. But Western researchers are only just starting to study matcha, which means that we're still unpacking the health benefits of the oft-proclaimed superfood. Here’s what they’ve unearthed thus far.

1.  Matcha improves heart health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for an estimated one-third of all deaths in people over 35 years old. But some research has found that drinking green tea may help protect against heart disease.

For instance, a 2011 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that the consumption of green tea correlates to lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, and another from 1997 suggests that green tea may also help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. In fact, a correlation has even been found between matcha and lower levels of triglycerides, a type of fat (lipid) found in the blood that can contribute to hardening the arteries or thickening the artery walls and, in turn, increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks and heart disease according to the Mayo Clinic.

2. Matcha rejuvenates the skin

Thanks to its detoxifying properties, matcha can hydrate, exfoliate and moisturize the skin. For example, chlorophyll, which protects the leaves from the sun and gives matcha its green color, cleanses the skin of toxins and protects it against chemicals that could leave the skin vulnerable to blemishes and discoloration. Likewise, epigallocatechin gallate combats bacterial buildup, which can help ward off acne.

A 2011 study of women 40 to 65 years old suggests that those who drink green tea have 25 percent less redness in reaction to UV radiation. Their skin is also more elastic skin, smooth and moisturized compared to the non-tea drinkers.

3. Matcha helps to fight cancer

Matcha’s most predominant antioxidant is epigallocatechin gallate, which has particularly shown to have powerful anticancer properties. Studies show that EGCg may interfere with several of the processes involved in cell replication, causing tumor cell death (apoptosis), according to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

But while EGCg has shown to have a serious impact on cancer, researchers suggest that the entire makeup of matcha green tea as a whole is even more powerful.

“The combination of all the phytochemicals that are present in green tea are better than isolating a single ingredient,” professor Michael Lisanti of University of Salford tells SheKnows. Lisanti and his team from the Biomedical Research Center used metabolic phenotyping on cell lines of breast cancer, and they found that matcha “shifted cancer cells towards quiescent metabolic state.” It actually stopped their spread at a low concentration (0.2 milligrams per milliliter).

“We used cell lines and looked at the cancer stem cells — because cancer cells don’t cause cancer,” Lisanti explains. “One cancer stem cell is enough to cause cancer, and you can have a million bulk cancer cells and nothing could happen. But most of the current therapies are designed to treat bulk cancer cells. The problem is that they’re very similar metabolically to normal cells, which is why the side effects are so high.”

Matcha green tea, a 2018 study out of University of Salford in the U.K. concluded, can inhibit the propagation of cancer stem cells and, because it’s all-natural, it’s safe for patients.

4. Matcha boosts the metabolism & sustains energy

Legend has it that the samurai — medieval, early-modern Japanese warriors — drank matcha green tea before battle because of its energizing properties according to Swift. In fact, a 2015 article published in the journal Psychopharmacology found that the L-theanine in matcha actually alters the effects of caffeine, promoting sustained alertness.

More: Turmeric or Curcumin: Which Has the Most Health Benefits?

“The caffeine with coffee releases immediately… and then you hit a slump and totally crash,” Swift explains. “The caffeine in the matcha latches onto the L-theanine, the amino acid, and you get a sustained released of energy over three to six hours depending on your physiology.”

Though less than a cup of coffee, the caffeine in matcha (30 to 35 milligrams per gram) can boost the metabolism, and one 2005 study from Laval University in Canada found that taking a supplement containing green tea extract can significantly boost 24-hour energy expenditure.

5. Matcha enhances memory & concentration

Japanese Buddhist monks have long been consuming matcha as a means to facilitate relaxation and alertness during meditation. That’s largely because of the L-theanine, which has shown to promote relaxation.

A 2017 Wageningen University (Netherlands) study found that consuming matcha improves attention, reaction time and memory. Other research, this time out of Australia's Monash University in 2006, suggests that L-theanine also produces dopamine and serotonin, which also serve to boost mood, improve memory and promote concentration.

So the next time you need a caffeine fix, you might want to opt for matcha instead of coffee — your body will thank you!

Denzel Washington Tells Us Why He Wants You to Get Involved & Give Back

It's not every day you get to hop on the phone with an Oscar-winning actor and talk about the importance of one of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which help millions of kids of all ages develop the fundamental skills they need to lead successful lives. Just a few weeks ago, SheKnows spoke with Denzel Washington about exactly this topic — along with the breakout year his son, actor John David Washington, is having and what's next in his career. Denzel has been involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs for a majority of his life, and he continues to work with and support the organization.

When we spoke, Washington's support came in the form of supporting Malachi Haynes, the winner of the National Youth of the Year Award for 2018-2019, who also joined our chat to discuss what it felt like to win an award for his contributions to the Boys & Girls Clubs. In speaking with both men, it became clear they wanted to impress upon us the importance of getting involved and active in the community.

SheKnows: Denzel, can you tell me how you got involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America originally and why you chose to stay involved?

Denzel Washington: I wanted to join the club from the age of 5. They were building a [Boys & Girls] club in my town and I always just wanted to go there. I wondered what went on there. Now, I've spent 50-some-odd years as a member, as a counselor and as a spokesperson. So, it's always been a bright light in my life and at a positive place, as they say, for young people. I owe a tremendous amount to the Boys & Girls Club for guiding me and helping me to become the man that I am.

SheKnows: From your experiences with Boys & Girls Clubs, can you tell me what you'd recommend to others who want to get involved in charitable giving?

DW: I think that's a good question for Malachi. Malachi, what do you suggest they do?

Malachi Haynes: Well, I think people should just go to the Boys & Girls Club and get active within [that community]. As soon as you walk through the doors, you can feel the magic — the Boys & Girls Club kind of aura about it. It's really amazing.

SheKnows: Malachi, can you tell me a little bit more about the process you've been through, leading up to your competition win?

MH: Yeah, I can't quite put into words right now. I'm just feeling kind of surreal right now. [The night I won] I had all kinds of emotions running through my head, but right now it kind of feels nice to know that hard work does pay off.

SheKnows: Denzel, your son, John David Washington, is having a breakout year as an actor. Has he come to you with any advice on how to navigate the world of acting and being a celebrity?

DW: Well, we've talked [about acting] all of his life and anything he would ask, I tried to give him an honest answer. I'm very proud of him, as is my wife [actor Pauletta Washington], and I think he's well on his way.

SheKnows: Denzel, can you give us a little preview of what you're working on at the moment?

DW: Unemployment [laughs]. I recently did a run in five-hour play in the spring, The Iceman Cometh, which was a real workout. I look forward to my next project, but right now I'm enjoying unemployment.

FDA Approves Use of HPV Vaccine for People 27 to 45 — Here's What You Need to Know

0
0

Like so many people, when the Gardasil vaccine was first introduced a few years ago to help prevent certain cancers caused by human papillomavirus, I was pretty excited. Then I read the guidelines and realized I was too old to get it. A cancer-preventing vaccine sounded too good to be true, and at the time, for a lot of us, it was. That's why the Food & Drug Administration's recent move to expand use of the vaccine for people ages 27 to 45 is such a big deal.

Let's back up a second: Back in 2006, the FDA approved the first version of Gardasil, which was shown to prevent various cancers and diseases caused by four types of HPV. While that iteration is no longer distributed in the United States, in 2014, the FDA approved Gardasil 9, which not only covers the original four types of HPV but also an additional five strains and was approved for people ages 9 through 26.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that every year, around 14 million Americans become infected with HPV and about 79 million Americans total have HPV, so it's incredibly common. What's more is that each year, approximately 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer caused by HPV and more than 4,000 women will die from it — even with screening and treatment. In other words, the more people who can get the Gardasil vaccine, the more lives may be saved.

More: Signs of Cervical Cancer You Might Miss

“Today’s approval represents an important opportunity to help prevent HPV-related diseases and cancers in a broader age range,” Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. ”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that HPV vaccination prior to becoming infected with the HPV types covered by the vaccine has the potential to prevent more than 90 percent of these cancers, or 31,200 cases every year, from ever developing.”

The FDA conducted a study (using the original 2006 formulation of Gardasil) involving approximately 3,200 women 27 through 45 years of age, tracking them for an average of three-and-a-half years, and found that the vaccine was 88 percent effective in the prevention of a combined end point of persistent infection, genital warts, vulvar and vaginal precancerous lesions, cervical precancerous lesions and cervical cancer related to HPV types covered by the vaccine.

Using these results, the FDA approved the newer formulation — Gardasil 9, which protects against five additional strains — for people ages 27 through 45. In the trial, participants reported the usual side effects associated with any vaccine: injection site pain, swelling, redness and headaches.

But what about the whole idea of giving the vaccine to young people before they become sexually active? It's actually a little more nuanced than that. If a person has already been exposed to a certain strain of HPV, then the vaccine will not protect them against that strain. But it will work against any of the other strains — remember, there are a total of nine — included in the vaccine. So even if someone is sexually active and has been exposed to some of the strains of HPV, there is still a potential benefit to getting the vaccine.

Not only that, but some people don't become sexually active until later in life, but because the FDA only approved the vaccine up until the age of 26, they weren't able to get it without it being considered "off-label," which meant their insurance didn't cover it. Now, most insurance companies should cover Gardasil for those in the approved age range.

More: Everything You Need to Know About HPV & the Vaccine

Additionally, other people may have been in a long-term monogamous relationship with the same sexual partner for years — and had never been exposed to HPV — but now, later in life, are out of that relationship and becoming sexually active with new partners who might give them HPV. According to a report from the The New York Times, the FDA is currently looking into making a recommendation for the use of the vaccine in older people for scenarios like these.

The FDA hasn't specified whether the vaccine regimen will look different for those older than 26. For now, if you're between 27 and 45 and interested in getting the vaccine, talk to your doctor and check with your insurance provider to make sure it's covered.

How I Beat Cancer While Pregnant

The summer of 2007 was supposed to be one of the happiest times of my life — the long wait to officially adopt and bring home our daughter Naomi was almost over, and our family of three was growing to four. Instead, it turned into one of the scariest, most confusing times of my life.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer — and three days later, I found out I was pregnant.

More: Do Pregnancy "Rules" Really Matter?

Despite having tried to get pregnant for quite a while, my husband and I hadn’t been able to have another child after our son Ethan. So we’d essentially given up. But then, right during one of the hardest times of my life, it had finally happened.

I couldn’t help but ask: Why now?

I was devastated. What should have been a dream come true quickly became a nightmare. Breast cancer was about to take two babies from me — the one growing in my belly and the one that had been growing in my heart for years. The thought of never being able to hold them tore me apart.

I saw four doctors — and every single one recommended that I terminate my pregnancy — until I visited City of Hope. When I met Dr. Benjamin Paz, an esteemed oncology surgeon who has worked at City of Hope for 23 years, my entire outlook changed. He didn’t tell me to choose between my life and my baby’s life — he found ways to adjust my cancer treatment regimen to protect both of us. Paz’s pragmatism and promise changed my outlook. Granted, it was still a scary time in my life — it was cancer, after all — but I wasn’t afraid to put my life in his hands. I remember him saying, “cancer doesn’t have to be this thing that defines you,” and I stuck to that day in and day out.

Ten years later, I’m healthy and have three beautiful children, none of which would be possible without my care team — they were the answer to one of my darkest times, and I will always be grateful for that.

But it wasn’t as simple as it sounds — I didn’t just walk into City of Hope one day, snap my fingers, and it was all over. It was a process during which I received treatment, completed an international adoption, wrote a book and gave birth to my daughter.

Both before and after having my daughter Samantha, I received chemotherapy to fight my cancer. While I was pregnant, I endured four cycles of Adriamycin/Cytoxan. After giving birth, I underwent four cycles of Taxol. I also had the option to receive radiation but opted for a double mastectomy instead.

Yes, I was scared. As I looked for books and resources to guide me through my cancer experience, I realized a lot of the information available was too clinical or too sad. But I wanted to feel hope — maybe even smile or laugh a little. I wanted to feel less alone. So I wrote a book, Bald, Fat & Crazyabout my nine-month roller coaster juggling cancer and pregnancy. It was a way for me to share my personal and medical struggles — and hopefully help others experiencing a health care crisis or going through another difficult situation. When I look back at my diagnosis and treatment experience, I am thankful for the outcome. Today, my husband and three children and I are living normal and busy lives.

Every cancer diagnosis and situation is different, but a few pieces of advice apply to them all, the first being: Receive treatment — or at least make every effort to get a second opinion from — a comprehensive cancer center. These are centers that specialize in approaching cancer treatment from all angles and modalities, and they will know about the latest and best therapies for your cancer.

And the second, and perhaps most important piece of advice I give to all people who have been diagnosed with cancer: Trust your gut and don't be afraid to ask for help. When you just ask, you may be amazed at what you get — and the surprising places it comes from.

Sonequa Martin-Green Is Set to Return to The Walking Dead in Season 9

Fans of The Walking Dead already know they'll be seeing one ghost this season, as Jon Bernthal's return was announced this summer. During the show's New York Comic Con panel on Saturday, we learned there will be two more alums returning, though we have no further details on how or why they appear.

More: The Walking Dead Cast Wrote Tributes to Andrew Lincoln, & Now We're Crying

TVLine reports that showrunner Angela Kang revealed that Sonequa Martin-Green will reprise her role as Sasha Williams, who was killed in the season seven finale. Martin-Green was beloved from her first appearance in season three until she attempted to kill Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) at the end of season seven by becoming a walker.

Kang also revealed that the late Scott Wilson will reprise his role as Hershel Green, though in light of the actor's death on Saturday, it's unclear whether his scenes will still be included in season nine. Wilson's character was introduced in season two and became a father figure to many of the characters before he was beheaded in season four.

Since Martin-Green, Wilson and Bernthal's characters are all dead in series canon, the prevailing theory is that they will appear in flashbacks related to show star Andrew Lincoln's departure this season. Lincoln's character, Rick Grimes, fatally stabbed Bernthal's in season two, and Bernthal later made an appearance as a hallucination in season three — so the possibility of Martin-Green and Wilson returning as ghosts or hallucinations isn't out of the question either.

With the news of Wilson's death so fresh in the hearts and minds of The Walking Dead family, we don't expect to learn any more details about how he and Martin-Green will factor into the new season. However, we look forward to seeing how the rest of season nine plays out.

Buckingham Palace’s Master of the Household’s Office is now hiring a sous chef — but this isn’t your typical position. As part of the catering branch, this sous chef job is not only a permanent, full-time position, but it also offers the option to live at the Buckingham Palace if you so choose. (Um, who wouldn’t choose?)

“It's developing your leadership skills. And it’s helping to deliver extraordinary service. This is what makes a career at the Royal Household so different,” the job description states.

The sous chef's duties include planning and developing menu items for events and working alongside the head chef to help run day-to-day operations.

“And whether you’re based in Buckingham Palace or traveling to other locations, you'll look forward to whatever challenge comes your way,” the job description states.

As one would expect, Buckingham Palace has quite the list of expectations for anyone who applies.

For starters, candidates must have a background in premier catering, must be trained in classical French cuisine and must be able to follow up-to-date catering legislative requirements. If you have all of that printed on your résumé and you have excellent leadership and communication skills, you might just be a royal shoo-in.

The job is located in London, obviously, but the most exciting part has got to be the fact that you get to travel to other royal residences. Oh, and if you decide to live at the palace, all meals will be provided too.

A specific salary isn’t listed on the job description, but it does state that the hired sous chef will receive a comprehensive benefits package, 33 vacation days and a 15 percent employer contribution pension scheme.

But let’s be honest here: The real prize is knowing you’ll likely see (and cook for) all those royals, right?

If you think you have what it takes, you have until Oct. 19 to apply, so get on it.

William H. Macy Cried During Emmy Rossum's Last Shameless Table Read

If you thought you were sad about Emmy Rossum leaving Shameless after this season, you're definitely not alone. Her costar, William H. Macy, apparently couldn't keep it together during her final table read for the show, which had a domino effect, prompting everyone else present to begin weeping.

At the 2018 Annual Rape Foundation Brunch on Sunday, Macy told Entertainment Tonight that he feels very emotional about Rossum leaving.

"I'm the one that blew it. We did a table read for her last episode, I cried right in the middle of the table read in front of everyone," Macy said. "It was so bad and my voice turned into some weird voice I'd never heard as I was trying to muscle through it and then everybody else started crying, so at least I didn't look like a complete jerk."

Rossum announced in an emotional letter to fans in August that she is leaving Shameless, which she's starred in since the show premiered in 2011. Macy told ET on Sunday that he has no doubt Rossum will continue to rise to new heights in her career after her time on Shameless has wrapped.

"Yeah, I wish her well. I know she's going to thrive," Macy said. "She'll be missed and it's a brand new day. I'm excited about change, we'll see what happens."

Following Rossum's announcement of her departure, showrunner John Wells issued a statement that read in part, "We are hard at work now creating a season nine finale for Shameless which we hope will provide a Gallagher-worthy sendoff for Fiona that honors the great work Emmy has done."

Whatever the "Gallagher-worthy sendoff" is, if Macy couldn't hold it together, we're sure we won't manage it either.

How Shonda Rhimes Changed Kerry Washington's Views About Powerful Women

Now that Shonda Rhimes' Scandal has ended, star Kerry Washington is moving onto her next projects — of which there are many. In the cover story for Marie Claire's November 2018 issue, Washington speaks about how working with Rhimes has had a lasting impact on how she works as a Black woman in Hollywood.

More: Kerry Washington's Scandal Farewell Will Make Even the Toughest Gladiator Cry

“I didn’t feel like I had to twist myself into some other understanding of what black womanness is supposed to look like, because Shonda got me, and so I could get closer and closer to my truth because I wasn’t worried about going to work on Monday and somebody being like, ‘Why would you talk about that?’" Washington told Marie Claire.

Working with Rhimes also helped Washington gain a new understanding of power. "Just her existence and working with her so intimately changed the idea of what power looked like in this business," she said.

For Washington, power is something that comes from within, but having Rhimes as a boss for so long was huge for her development as an actor and producer. “Honestly, I think about power as more of an internal phenomenon," she said. "I tend to think about empowerment for myself so that I have the courage and ability to act on the ideologies and priorities that resonate with me. I’ve always wanted to cultivate a sense of empowerment within myself without seeking approval from outside sources, which is hard to do as an actor, which is part of why producing is so important and which is where some of my freedom, or learning, to take that sense of freedom and bring it to a larger audience and larger space has a lot to do with having my employer be a black woman."

More: Kerry Washington's New TV Show Will Be Nothing Like Scandal

In her post-Scandal work, Washington will have the chance to imbue her characters and her projects as a producer with this idea of power. According to Marie Claire, Washington's production company, Simpson Street, has a slew of projects on the horizon, including several films and a Hulu adaptation of Celeste Ng's best-selling novel Little Fires Everywhere, in which Washington costars with Reese Witherspoon, who is co-executive producing.
