The First Official Promo for The Conners Is Here, & They're Better Than Ever

0
0

Time to breathe a sigh of relief! The first promo for The Conners has been released, and the beloved sitcom family seems every bit as endearing as they always have been.

After the original series star and creator Roseanne Barr was fired following a racist tweet earlier this year, the fate of the Roseanne reboot hung in the balance. But since the spinoff-spinoff The Conners got the go-ahead, fans have been waiting with bated breath to see how the series will look sans Barr.

More: The First Look at The Conners Has Arrived

If the first promo is anything to go by, it looks like ABC won't pretend like there's not an elephant in the room. In the first few moments of the promo, a narrator states, “Tuesday, October 16, there’s one thing on everyone’s mind.” When Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie laments, “There’s no place for the corn-holders,” the narrator quips, “No, that ain’t it.”

The big question, according to the narrator, is, “What’s next for the Conners?” And that’s spot on. What is next for America’s favorite blue-collar sitcom family now that their matriarch is gone?

While the promo doesn’t address how the character of Roseanne will be written out, it does show the family moving forward.

As the song “Life Is a Highway” blares in the background, the clip shows Dan, Darlene, Becky, D.J., Jackie and the rest of the gang doing everything from playing cards to singing in church together. At one point, Jackie tells Darlene they need to discuss plans for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas — to which Darlene responds, “Oh, I say we follow the Conners’ tradition and spend every dime we have on Halloween and have nothing to be thankful for or buy gifts with.”

Yep, sounds like the Conners are officially back!

In regards to the fate of Barr’s character, her former costar John Goodman seemed to imply in an August interview with The Sunday Times that the family matriarch will be killed off. When asked how his character will be in The Conners, Goodman said, “I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.” This seemed to be confirmed later by Barr during an appearance on Brandon Straka’s YouTube show “Walk Away” in September, Barr when she confirmed as much: “Oh yeah, they killed her. They have her die of an opioid overdose.”

The past may be a bit grim and the road to The Conners Oct. 16 premiere a tough one, but if anything, this new promo is teasing a bright future ahead for America's favorite blue-collar family — and we're loving it.

McDonald's Has a Halloween Game, & It's Better Than Monopoly

Hold on to your (witch) hats, because we've got some news that'll make you feel like you're flying high.

Starting on Wednesday, McDonald's is celebrating the spookiest season of the year with a new game. Called "Trick. Treat. Win," it's similar to Monopoly in that the game pieces come as stickers on your food, and the prizes are fairly similar too.

More: McDonald's Classic Burgers Are Now All-Natural, & We're Pumped About It

What sets it apart is that it's Halloween-themed and digital. You can instantly win from the stickers on your food or you can enter them into the McDonald's app to enter a daily sweepstakes in which you can win bigger prizes. No more keeping that wrinkled McDonald's Monopoly board on your fridge, right?

The game tokens will consist of instant-win food tokens, instant-win nonfood tokens and sweepstakes-entry tokens. You can just scan the barcode on the sweepstakes-entry token to add them to the McDonald's app on your phone or enter them on the McDonald's website if you don't feel like downloading the app just to play the game.

Trick. Treat. Win! lasts through Oct. 31 or until all the game pieces are gone. According to the website, you have a 1 in 4 chance of winning something, though you're most likely to win free food.

Honestly, those are pretty great odds for this sort of game. I don't know about you, but I have a feeling there'll be a few more McMuffins than usual in my future this month!

Artificial Sweeteners Can Be Bad News for This Part of Your Body

0
0

Scientists have long wondered what artificial sweeteners do to your body. In fact, both the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association recommend using artificial sweeteners in moderation, as sugar-free products are not always healthy. Now, a recent study — conducted by researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and published in the journal Molecules — found artificial sweeteners may be detrimental to your health.

In fact, artificial sweeteners can actually damage your digestive tract; specifically, your gut's natural bacteria.

More: Probiotics May Not Be as Helpful as We Think

According to a study, six of the most common artificial sweeteners — aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, neotame, advantame and acesulfame potassium-k — were found to be toxic in the digestive gut microbes of mice.

What's more, it took only 1 milligram per milliliter of said artificial sweeteners to yield this result.

Professor Ariel Kushmaro, John A. Ungar chair in biotechnology in the Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering and member of the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology and the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev, said in a statement, "[T]his is further evidence that consumption of artificial sweeteners adversely affects gut microbial activity which can cause a wide range of health issues."

And while all of the tested sweeteners are deemed "safe for consumption" by the Food and Drug Administration, the results of this study suggest further testing is necessary — especially since these sweeteners are in so many products that most individuals consume them without their knowledge.

"The results of this study might help in understanding the relative toxicity of artificial sweeteners and the potential of negative effects on the gut microbial community as well as the environment," Kushmaro said.

That said, in the interim, consumers should be mindful of what they are eating and should consume whole, fresh foods whenever possible.

How to Survive Your First Mammogram & When You Need to Get It

0
0

They always say you never forget your first… mammogram — and they’re right. You really haven’t lived until you’ve stood topless in front of a stranger as they place your breast in a chamber that is designed to make it into a boob pancake.

Your first mammogram is not fun (neither is your second, third and so on), but no matter how much you dread going, it is absolutely necessary that every person with breasts experience this nerve-wracking experience. For all of the anxiety-inducing fear this ritual induces, there is not a better feeling than receiving the all clear from the radiologist, meaning you’re good to go, at least for another year.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32, I've been through my fair share of every type of breast exam imaginable. Here are a few tricks of the trade to ensure that your first mammogram isn’t a traumatic experience.

Is it your time?

If you're confused about when you need to get your first mammogram, you're not alone. As technology, prevention and treatment develops, organizations like the American Cancer Society shift their recommendations on the age at which you should get your first mammogram.

According to Dr. Janie Grumley, a breast surgical oncologist and director of the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Providence Saint John’s Center and associate professor of surgery at John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California, the magic number is 40 years old.

More: Understanding the Lumps & Bumps in Your Breasts

“All women with an average risk for breast cancer should start screening at the age of 40 and be screened annually," Grumley tells SheKnows. "There are many conflicting studies and recommendations; however, it is important for women to understand that annual screening allows for detection of subtle differences in the mammogram images and has been shown in all studies to improve survival. [Another factor] that contributes to this timeline is family history."

Grumley recommends that patients with significant family history or known genetic risk of breast cancer start earlier and ensure their radiologist does an MRI in addition to the regular mammogram. "If there is uncertainty regarding risk, it is best to consult a breast specialist to fully assess individual needs,” she adds.

Regardless of your age or status at your first mammogram, your first will be used as a baseline, which is really just another way of saying that it's your first mammogram. Doctors usually use your first as a basis for comparison going forward, so if something unusual shows up, your doctor can see if it is a new development or something you've always had in your breast.

More:  Why You Might Want to Consider a Baseline Mammogram

Give yourself enough time

Don't try to squeeze a mammogram between lunch and an after-school pickup. Most mammogram centers can be quite busy during the week, which means there could be a wait.

Yes, the mammogram itself takes all of 10 minutes, but it’s the waiting that can have you tied up in knots. First, you wait to be called back to get changed. Then you wait to be called into the mammogram room, then wait for the radiologist to receive your films, study them and discuss whether there were any findings that need further examination. Trying to cram this appointment into your busy schedule will most likely leave you with more anxiety than needed, so plan accordingly.

Phone a friend

Doctor’s office waiting rooms are never places where we want to spend a lot of time. Sure, they try to make it a place that’s welcoming, with trashy magazines and reruns of the Golden Girls, but at the end of the day, it’s the last place we all want to be.

If you’re nervous about going to this appointment, bring a friend to sit with you. They won’t be able to go into the actual mammogram with you, but at least you will be comforted knowing they’re just on the other side. If the radiologist has information you might not want to hear, it’s good to have a friend nearby for not only emotional support, but to remember the information you’re given. Many of us tend to shut down when we’re told about an illness, and our brains simply can’t process next steps.

It’s OK to be scared

There’s a bravado that can happen when you’re attending a doctor’s appointment of any type: “I don’t need your help. I’m fine. I’m an independent woman!” We know you are, but still. It’s OK to be scared.

More: Having Breast Cancer at 32 Put Me in Control of My Body

It’s OK to let the reception desk know it’s your first mammogram and you are totally freaked out. It's OK to let the technician know as well. They will walk you through what they are doing and what is going to happen next.

Also, be aware that they are not the ones who will let you know if they see anything alarming because that is not their job. If you ask them what they're seeing, don't freak out if they don’t tell you anything. It is their job to take the images, and it is the job of the radiologist to explain the results.

It’s OK to ask questions — even the ones you think might sound ridiculous. The radiologist is there to walk you through the results, so if you don’t understand something, stop them and ask them to explain. It feels much better to walk out of your first mammogram armed with all the answers rather than lingering doubt.

Mammograms are a rite of passage for most women. The bad news is that they will not be as fun as your bat mitzvah, sweet 16 or quinceañera. The good news is that this time, you're old enough to take yourself out for a congratulatory cocktail afterward.

How Kaley Cuoco & Karl Cook Are Celebrating 3 Months of Marriage

Kaley Cuoco and husband Karl Cook just hit a mini-milestone in their marriage, and barring a bit of eyebrow maintenance, it seems like smooth sailing for these two.

More: Kaley Cuoco Talks About the Emotional Moment She Learned  TBBT  Was Ending

Cuoco took to Instagram on Monday to celebrate three months of marital happiness with her hubs, posting a sweet photo of the couple. “Three months ???? ?? and a #mcm all rolled into one .. here’s to you my darling,” she captioned the photo.

Not one to be outdone by his bride, Cook posted his own tribute to their wedded bliss — albeit with a much more tongue-in-cheek post. In a candid video of the couple, Cuoco fusses over Cook’s face. When he playfully asks, “Why am I not good enough for you?” Cuoco retorts, “Your brows aren’t. You are.”

In the caption accompanying the Instagram video, Cook kids, “This video is just pure marriage, plain and simple. I believe there will be a time when @normancook looks at me with love. For the foreseeable future she only sees problems with my face??"

Since their equestrian-themed wedding in July, Cuoco and Cook have pretty much been killing the Instagram game with their cute newlywed shenanigans. On Saturday, Cuoco hinted at a future family when she posted a pic of the pair holding a baby and small dog. In the post’s caption, Cuoco called the experience “family practice” and joked that she was “already a helicopter mom.”

Last week, Cook affectionately poked fun at his wife because she couldn’t quite wrap her head around daylight savings time.

Not surprisingly, Cuoco has been celebrating the pair’s marriage on a regular basis. In August, she wrote, “How has it already been 2 months since this happened? Life is flying, enjoy every second … #kcsquared #mrtankcook the keeper of my [heart emoji]?.”

And on July 28, she commemorated their one-month mark, gushing, “Happiest one month married lovely hubby!”

Adorable, no? Here’s wishing Cuoco and Cook a million more celebratory Instagram posts. We can’t wait to see how they celebrate their love next month.

Justin Hartley Says His Teenage Daughter Is Already Turning Down Agents

With a father like in-demand actor Justin Hartley, who is currently starring on the plush primetime hit This Is Us, it isn’t surprising that his daughter, 14-year-old Isabella Hartley, would have Hollywood hounding her to get in front of the camera. But according to her dad, Isabella's already turning down agents — and for a good reason too.

During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, Hartley described his daughter’s super-laid-back attitude toward celebrity. “She came to the This is Us premiere with me and my whole cast was there. It was really nice,” Hartley told DeGeneres, adding that his own agent struck up a conversation with Isabella that evening.

“He comes up to me afterward, and he goes, ‘Listen, I just want you to know, [I] straight-up offered your daughter representation because she’s got such a great personality, I think she’d be wonderful in this business,’” Hartley recounted.

Only Isabella is apparently a girl who knows what she wants — or, in this case, might not want.

“She was sort of like, ‘Yeah, um, well, there are a few things that I’m interested in. I’m not quite sure if I want to go down that road,’” Hartley said, to which he told his teen, “Babe, it took me years to get anyone to pay attention to me!”

While Hartley feigned jealousy (“But whatever, good for her — she’s too cool for school”), it’s clear he couldn’t be prouder of his little girl.

In 2016, he half-wished, half-predicted Isabella would be the exception to the norm where teenage rebellion is concerned, telling People, “I don’t know if this is going to be the one child in the history of the world that doesn’t have any problems, but I’m hoping that she is. Maybe she’s an alien. I’m not sure.”

He went on to say of her track record at that time, “She’s perfect. She gets straight As. It’s like the most amazing thing that I don’t know where the hell she got it from, but she’s really good.”

It seems as though Isabella may just be living up to her dad’s high expectations too. Earlier this summer (and two years after calling her a perfect alien), Hartley circled back around to his daughter during a new interview with People

“She’s got pretty much everything,” he said. “I don’t know where she got it but she definitely has it and we’re very proud.”

Aw! These two really are daddy-daughter goals.

Heidi Montag May or May Not Be 'a Mess' on Son Gunner's First Birthday

The Hills alum Heidi Montag is giving God all the credit for son Gunner's first year. A kind of, sort of emotionalish Montag posted an Instagram Story on Monday (captioned "I'm a mess!") in which she appeared to wipe away nonexistent tears of joy.

It's OK, honey. You don't have to force the tears. You can love your baby without having to be "a mess." We promise. We still love you.

MoreCardi B, Spencer Pratt & Heidi Montag Brought Babies to the VMAs

“God is amazing. Gunner is just such a blessing, and I can’t believe it’s already been a year,” Montag said. “It’s been the most amazing and challenging year of my entire life. But it’s just been so great, every moment.”

Montag and her hubby, Spencer Pratt (another Hills alum), had a professional photo shoot done of their birthday boy, and damn it — that kid is really stinking cute. We have to hand it to Gunner. He's humanized his parents (formerly known by their couple moniker, "Speidi") in a way we could not have seen coming. Nice job, little guy. You have a bright future in public relations. Especially if you keep dressing like that. That newsboy cap and tweed vest? Fab.

“I can’t believe it’s been one year already! Little love and light of my life!” Montag wrote on Instagram. “You made all my hopes and dreams come true. I prayed for you my entire life, and you are beyond what I could imagine.”

And guess what Gunner wanted for his first birthday? His very first french fry. Montag posted an Instagram Story saying she took her little guy out for lunch then jewelry shopping at Jennifer Meyer's boutique. Just what every little boy wants for his first birthday!

MoreBaby Speidi Is Finally Here!

“Whatever you want, you can have!” Montag joked at the boutique. “You want something for Mommy? You’re so sweet.”

Later, there was a birthday hike, presumably to work off the single french fry. Gunner dodged that by falling asleep. And, you know, by maybe not knowing how to walk yet. Nice move, bud.

Papa Pratt also reveled in his son's first birthday via Instagram. “Happy birthday ‘miracle baby,’” the Pratt Daddy Crystals founder (no, really — look it up) wrote. “Thank you for infinite blessings.”

And speaking of infinite blessings: We'll all get to see a whole lot more of the Montag-Pratts on MTV's new unscripted The Hills: New Beginnings. You think we're kidding. Nope. The series reunites original cast members — remember Audrina Patridge? Justin Bobby? Or was it Bobby Justin? Either way, we can't wait.

7 Ways to Boost Your Imagination at Work

0
0

You’re so used to performing the same tasks day in and day out. Where’s the fun? Has your mind wandered elsewhere? There’s a difference and a connection between “wandering” and “wondering.” When you brainstorm, your mind goes on a vision quest of its own, but when you feel stuck and stagnant, your brain chews on worry, stress and distraction. So here are seven ways to expand your imagination at work.

1. Chew on bite-size goals

Focusing on the big picture too much gets scary and stressful, and then your perfectionist self kicks into full gear. You get stuck and cranky, which doesn’t make you a pleasant person with whom to work or be around. When tasks and details overwhelm, chew on bite-size goals instead of resorting to your worrywart tendencies. Break each goal into smaller actionable goals that excite you — or at least don’t make you want to bang your head against a wall.

2. Stand on your head

When you reach that point or feel blue in the face, stand on your head. You need to get the blood flowing back to your brain and circulating in your body. Break out those office asanas and breathing techniques. Jog around the building twice and make people laugh. Walk around for a change of scene. Release the power of endorphins like the Kraken, and get to cracking!

3. Expose yourself to nature

Sitting in the same chair at the same desk with the same gray walls or too-bright environment gets to you after a while. Your brain likes variation, and humans belong to nature. So expose yourself to nature in whatever dose you can find it in. One study found that backpackers were 50 percent more inspired after four days out on the trail, but you can get a boost in under 30 minutes. Unplugging restores your focus and boosts your performance and creativity levels. Remember how good it felt to sit under a big tree and read as a kid? Find your tree. Walk a nearby greenway in the mornings, evenings or during your lunch break. Create a succulent garden on your desk or in the break room.

4. Cultivate disciplined creativity

Order and chaos seem at odds with one another, but when yin and yang find a balance, so do you on your path to creativity. Structure allows innovation to seep in according to expert and professional speaker Erik Wahl — the wildest of minds need order to get the space they require to roam free without distraction and home in more on the details they love to develop and nurture so much. He shares how, every day, Beethoven sat down from daybreak to midafternoon and composed. Kafka’s go-to time was sitting down to write at 11:30 p.m. Mozart achieved a work-and-creative-life balance by teaching lessons in the mornings and composing during the evenings. By following similar practices, you can also unleash your imagination.

5. Put a timer on downtime

“Downtime” usually means taking a break, but being down means focusing on the things that keep you down for far too long. Lift yourself back up to brainstorming territory — it’s beautiful up there! Take downtime breaks to reset your focus, and if you find yourself distracted by other matters, put pen to paper and let it all out. When you write something down, you process your emotions and thoughts better and are more likely to focus on your goals. Set a time limit for how long you can worry — put it on paper and let it go. Who knows? Your pen may wander onto creative solutions in its meandering.

6. Envision rather than assume

You know what happens when you assume — don’t do that to yourself, your team or your clients. When you get caught up in a downward spiral of negative thinking, return to the original vision and take the art of visualization further. Use it in a way that works for you. Perhaps that means creating a vision board of motivation or envisioning the positive payoff when you succeed. You might walk yourself through the worst-case scenario and reassure yourself that you have the support you need. Think of visualization as a walking mental meditation, and let it assist you in your brainstorming process. Don’t assume. Envision.

7. Do karaoke under your breath while brainstorming

For ages, music has served humanity as a source of expression and inspiration. Most people have a playlist for when they work out, so why not make a playlist for work? Certain types of music make you feel specific ways. Match songs to a client project, and sing under your breath as you brainstorm. Many students use softer melodies to get started and faster-paced music to match their inspiration, impact and execution levels. What’s a good song if you don’t sing along? But you don’t want to make every dog within a mile of you howl, so do karaoke under your breath while you work through ideas.

It may only be October, but is it ever too early to start thinking about the holiday season? John Legend doesn't think so. The singer-songwriter recently posted a video on Instagram announcing his first-ever Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas — plus an upcoming tour.

More: The Way Chrissy Teigen & John Legend Celebrated His EGOT Is #CoupleGoals

In the video, Legend sports a Santa hat (yep, in the hot Los Angeles sun), because obviously.

“What’s up, everybody. It’s John Legend here. It’s sunny Los Angeles in September but I can’t stop thinking about Christmas,” he said. “I just made a new Christmas album. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”

And while news of the album is super-exciting, many fans cannot get over the rest of the video, which includes clips of Legend in the recording studio as well as some beautiful candid shots of his wife, Chrissy Teigen, and their two children, Luna and Miles.

Because, let's be real; these kids are the real stars of this family — and they totally stole the show. I mean, can we talk about Luna's perfect plaid dress?!

That said, family aside, the collection will include several Christmas classics, like “Silver Bells,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Christmas Song  (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” as well as six brand-new songs according to The Hollywood Reporter. And while the album is not available, at least not yet, tickets for the accompanying tour — which will stop in Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and New York to name a few — are available for presale.

A Legendary Christmas will be released on Nov. 15, and you'd better believe we're booking our tour tickets — just on the off chance that we'll catch a sighting of Luna and Miles in Santa hats of their own.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Essay on Ryan Reynolds Details Their Beautiful Bromance

Who knew Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds cared for each other so much? As part of Variety's "New Power of New York" list, Jake Gyllenhaal wrote an essay about Ryan Reynolds honoring his good friend. What makes his tribute all the more amazing is how Gyllenhaal both gushed about Reynolds, all while jokingly taking digs at him, you know, just like Reynolds would totally do if the roles were reversed.

More: Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds Celebrate Their Wedding Anniversary With Jokes

Variety asked Gyllenhaal to write an essay about his Life co-star and why Reynolds "represents a new generation of movers and shakers that capture the best of Manhattan." Well, the Southpaw star definitely rose to the occasion.

He began his essay, which was published on Tuesday, by writing,

"I first met Ryan many years ago, and he struck me immediately as quick and warm and thoughtful, a gentleman in an era of foppish putzes, the unlikely love child of Mel Brooks and Dorothy Parker and Gary Cooper. He was also taller than me. Against my wishes, we became close friends."

More: Ryan Reynolds' New Project May Be the Best Idea Ever

Gyllenhaal's jokes continued by calling out Reynolds' "work in a string of romantic comedies." Of course, his fans know him best for romcoms like Definitely, Maybe and The Proposal.

"He was undoubtedly charming and handsome (annoying), but he never quite had the space to fire on all cylinders," Gyllenhaal wrote, before later hilariously adding, "After years of waiting and struggling to fit his unfortunate, pear-shaped physique into the skinny jeans of a conventional romantic lead, Ryan made his own luck with Deadpool."

Gif of Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal doing press for 2017 movie 'Life'

Gyllenhaal then got serious and praised Reynolds' role as Deadpool and how major of a talent he truly is, in addition to how extremely hard he worked to ensure the films became a success. He also wrote, "But make no mistake about it: For all of the effortlessness that Ryan projects, the man works tirelessly. He writes all night so he can be present for his kids and wife all day (and thanks to Aviation gin, he can pull off the latter)."

This isn't the first time Gyllenhaal's gushed about Reynolds. During a March 2017 interview with BBC's The One Show, he said, "He’s a wonderful man. It’s rare in our industry to meet someone, a contemporary, and there’s no competition … There are just some friends you meet at a certain time in your life."

More: Jake Gyllenhaal Got Shifty When Questioned About T-Swifty

Reynolds feels the same way about Gyllenhaal. While chatting with Good Morning America last March, he said, "Jake is easily the most interesting actor working in Hollywood today. Definitely one of my favorites, and then at the same time one of the kindest guys I’ve ever met."

If that isn't enough to make you swoon over their friendship, Gyllenhaal ended his essay by admitting that Reynolds is a good writer and comedian, but said "he is a better friend and father and husband," which is his "true mark of power." These two really do have a beautiful bromance.

Everything You Need to Know About HPV & the Vaccine

0
0

Thanks to the Pap test, cervical cancer is no longer one of the leading causes of death in American women. But it still affects approximately 13,240 people per year — 4,170 of whom will die from the illness. That's where the HPV vaccine comes in, because it's currently our most powerful tool in the fight against cervical cancer (in addition to other types of cancer).

But first things first — what is HPV, and what's its relationship to cervical cancer?

"HPV is short for human papillomavirus, of which there are over 40 types that are sexually transmitted," Dr. Steven Vasilev, a gynecologic oncologist and medical director of integrative gynecologic oncology at John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, tells SheKnows. Vasilev explains that it's extremely common and is present in approximately 80 percent of college-aged women. "[HPV] typically clears on its own within a year," he says.

More: Signs of Cervical Cancer You Might Miss

Because HPV often has no signs or symptoms, it can be difficult to tell who has or doesn’t have the virus, Dr. Alberto Mendivil, gynecologic oncologist at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California, tells SheKnows. That lack of outward symptoms makes it particularly dangerous — and that's why it's so important to get vaccinated.

More: The Unexpected Side Effect of Cervical Cancer Treatment

"HPV vaccines target important strains of the virus that are responsible for the cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal and head/neck cancers as well as genital warts," Dr. Amesh Adalja, a physician and senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, tells SheKnows. "The vaccine induces the immune system to develop antibodies against these strains so that when they are encountered, they cannot set up a productive infection because of the vaccine-induced antibodies."

For this reason, Adalja says it’s ideal to administer the HPV vaccine before becoming sexually active.

Vasilev explains that, as a general rule, the HPV vaccine should be given to girls sometime after age 11 — and before age 26 at the latest. And just as a reminder: the Centers for Disease Control recommends that all children (regardless of whether they have a cervix) should get the HPV vaccine, and recommends that boys get it at age 11 or 12 as well.

More: Why the Pap Smear May Be on Its Way Out for People Over 30

There is sometimes a level of wariness when it comes to vaccines, but a 2013 study in the British Journal of Medicine shows that the HPV vaccine is safe. Additionally, a 2018 study in the journal Pediatrics showed that it doesn't affect future fertility. Adalja says the most common side effect is soreness at the injection site, and there have been reports of fainting — but these are temporary side effects.

Soreness and fainting are mere inconveniences, especially given the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing cervical cancer. "Almost 100 percent of cervical cancer and precancer is at least partly caused by variants of HPV along with uncertain cofactors, including cigarette smoking," Vasilev says. "That's why it is important to be checked for both abnormal cells using the Pap smear and for infection by the human papillomavirus."

Similarly, Mendivil explains that more than 90 percent of cervical cancer is caused by HPV. He says that the illness is a slowly evolving form of cancer that starts in the cells lining the cervix. "They begin as precancerous cells, which then turn into cancer," Mendivil says. "This change from precancerous to cancerous cells can take anywhere from less than a year to several years."

Luckily, regular screenings and the HPV vaccine are strong preventative measures against cervical cancer. And although it's ideal to be vaccinated before becoming sexually active, don't rule out the HPV vaccine just because that ship has sailed. Instead, talk to your doctor about the best course of action to ensure you're taking all precautions possible to prevent cervical cancer.

What We Know About Dancing with the Stars: Juniors

Dancing with the Stars: Juniors is coming to television as a spinoff to the perennially popular Dancing with the Stars. The show premieres Oct. 7 on ABC, and I need to warn you — it's an explosion of cuteness!

The show pretaped this summer, and I got a behind-the-scenes look at the show by attending multiple tapings as an audience member. I know you've been so curious about what to expect from this upcoming spinoff, and while I wasn't able to reveal the details until now, I'm so ready to share them with you. What you're going to read is what I observed during the taping, both onstage and off.

More: The Cast of Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Has Been Revealed

Juniors take the best elements of DWTS and give it a fresh twist. If you think DWTS is emotional, just wait until you see these young talents dance. Juniors will air as a companion show to the veteran dance competition show, with Juniors airing on Sundays and the original DWTS continuing in its Monday night slot. Juniors is so good, though, I think it might eclipse DWTS in popularity.

Here is the inside scoop on season one.

You'll meet a fun cast of young celebs

Let's be honest: This series has a better cast than season 27 of DWTS. There are a lot of contestants you will fall in love with, like spelling bee expert Akash Vukoti, professional skateboarder Sky Brown and Avengers actor Ariana Greenblatt. If you're hesitant because you saw Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson on the list, you are going to see a new side to her — she's a confident and spirited teen. This cast is adorable!

The pros are here to help out

While many DWTS fans will tune in to see their favorite pros mentor the young dancers, it's the kid pros who steal the show. The talent is unbelievable, but that's not a surprise if you have followed shows like America's Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation and Little Big Shots, because many of these kids are veterans of the shows. You will be blown away by all the talent.

The stage is so cool

The ballroom will look different for Juniors than it does for DWTS. The stage is raised from the floor and created in the shape of a star. The ballroom is bright and colorful, with accents of yellow, pink, blue and green — it feels youthful and fun.

The voting is a little different

For viewers at home, there is no voting for you this time. The scoring was handed out by the judges. At the end of each show, the studio audience had a digital device where they voted to save one couple each episode.

These two scores were combined, and the lowest-scoring couple went home. The system worked smoothly, and it takes out the popularity contest that happens when America gets to vote — it's more about what happened on the dance floor each week.

You'll love the new judges

DWTS Juniors judges Mandy Moore, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Adam Rippon

DWTS pro Val Chmerkovskiy, La La Land choreographer Mandy Moore and DWTS: Athletes winner Adam Rippon form the panel of judges for Juniors this season. Chmerkovskiy was the most serious judge of the trio, while Rippon delivered some funny puns and Moore offered the most positive encouragement to the young dancers. Their three different approaches blended well, and the constructive criticism offered to the contestants was a breath of fresh air.

The hosts have DWTS experience

Two of the most popular contestants from season 25 are helming the show — Jordan Fisher and Frankie Muniz. Fisher won that season, but Muniz won the hearts of viewers. Both of them were featured in the DWTS winter tour earlier this year, so they are definitely familiar to viewers. It takes a couple of episodes for them to ease into their TV host roles, but they were total pros by the time the season wrapped up.

Dancing With the Stars: Juniors premieres on Sunday, Oct. 7 at  8/7c on ABC.

Stress Can Impact Fertility in Women — but Not in Men

We live in a society where always being busy is celebrated and self-care is viewed as some sort of indulgence. This means stress is a part of almost everyone's daily lives — sometimes despite our best efforts to reduce it. We know stress isn't good for our health, but it turns out it can also impact our fertility — for women, at least.

A new study out of the Boston University School of Public Health found higher levels of stress are associated with lower odds of conception for women but not for men.

"Although this study does not definitely prove that stress causes infertility, it does provide evidence supporting the integration of mental health care in preconception guidance and care," BUSPH doctoral student Amelia Wesselink, the study's lead author, said in a statement.

More: Knowing When to Draw the Line on Fertility Treatment

The research, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, notes that in North America, 20 to 25 percent of women and 18 to 21 percent of men of reproductive age report daily psychological stress. But when it comes to how that stress affects fertility, women fare worse.

The study used data from Pregnancy Study Online, an ongoing preconception cohort of North American pregnancy planners that follows couples for one year or until pregnancy, whichever comes first. It tracked 4,769 women and 1,272 men who did not have a history of infertility and had not been trying to conceive for more than six menstrual cycles.

When the stress levels of the participants were measured, the researchers found that women who indicated they had higher levels of stress were less likely to conceive than those who reported lower levels. This correlation was even stronger in women under the age of 35.

The authors of the study did note, however, that increased stress levels could mean less frequent sex and irregular menstrual cycles, so there are a lot of factors at play here. And let's not forget that dealing with infertility itself can be a very stressful situation, making the whole thing one unfortunate cycle.

These are only preliminary and largely speculative findings, but they do offer some interesting and helpful insight into the link between stress and infertility — especially in women.

How Old Is Too Old to Trick-or-Treat?

Kids love Halloween — or at least the dressing up and getting candy part. But should teens or even college-age kids really be out there trick-or-treating with the little kids?

Child psychologist Michele Borba tells SheKnows that while there's no one-size strict age cutoff, most kids decide that between 12 and 17 they feel too old to participate in trick-or-treating. “It really depends on the individual child, their peer group and the neighborhood where they live as to what is acceptable," she explains.

More: 28 Easy Halloween Costumes You Can DIY This Year

That said, certain areas do indeed enforce nonnegotiable trick-or-treat rules. For example, the city of Bathurst, Canada, actually passed a law to prohibit trick-or-treating for kids age 16 and older (the cutoff was originally 14 but it was raised in 2017) as well as a curfew for when revelers of all ages must stop going door-to-door. These laws were ostensibly put in place to ensure older kids didn’t use the holiday as an excuse to misbehave and act out.

But Borba doesn't believe older children want to trick-or-treat in order to cause trouble. "In general, they just want to have a good time on Halloween. If parents guide them correctly, they can have a fun and safe night.” If an older child wants to partake in trick-or-treat, Borba urges parents to let them — provided they follow certain guidelines. For one thing, they should wear a costume. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, but it is a key part of the trick-or-treating fun and ritual. Plus, it makes them appear a lot more engaged than if they just ring the doorbell asking for treats in their street clothes.

What else? "There will be many little kids walking around, so the costumes older children choose should not be scary, offensive or violent," says Borba. And older kids may prefer to dress in a group costume to eliminate any self-consciousness or concerns about being the only older kid dressed up.

Older children who are trick-or-treating also need to be extra polite as they walk through their neighborhood. “Remind teens that they are representing their family and need to use good manners at all times," says Borba. "Little kids will be all around, and they will be listening, watching and emulating these older children, so it's important to act as role models.”

And last but not least, set a curfew for when your child needs to return home from trick-or-treating. Just because older kids have later bedtimes than little ones, it doesn't mean neighbors want them to ring their bells at all hours of the night. And assuming teens are trick-or-treating without an adult, make sure they stay with their friends, don't leave anyone behind and that at least one member of the group has a cell phone in case a parent needs to be in contact.

More: Easy Halloween Makeup Ideas for When Your Kid Needs a Last-Minute Costume

That said, there are plenty of substitutes for trick-or-treating that will let older kids celebrate (safely) in style. If your older child isn't feeling the neighborhood romp this year, reach out to the parents of their friends to cook up an alternative. Borba says, “Teens are especially self-conscious and prefer not to be alone. They might worry their friends don’t want to go or will mock them if they do go. Parents should rely on their village of other parents; work together to help the kids to formulate a plan that everyone will enjoy.”

If kids feel too old to trick or treat themselves, suggest they volunteer to take a younger sibling or neighbor’s child out for treats. Parents with multiple kids may welcome the additional help on Halloween, and it's an excellent way for older kids to feel part of the childish festivities and grown up at the same time.

Teens could also trick or treat for charity instead of candy. Dr. Maurice Elias, professor of psychology at Rutgers University says, “Many people don't remember, but years ago, it was popular to trick or treat for the charity of UNICEF. Instead of candy, kids would ask for small donations for this cause. Collecting for charity instead of calories is something that can become more mainstream once again on Halloween and certainly would not be age-inappropriate for teens to do."

Another idea is for parents to host a supervised party for older children in their home or at a recreational center. Order food and nonalcoholic drinks, set up party games and/or provide music for dancing. If kids want to dress in costume, there can be prizes for most original or scariest.

For kids young and old, parents should broach the topic of Halloween a few weeks in advance. Brainstorming ideas on how to find a way to celebrate that feels right. Older kids shouldn't feel they have to give up the fun of trick-or-treat before they are ready. They just may need to be a little creative about the parameters to make the day age-appropriately fun.

Polar Releases New Seltzer Water Flavor Inspired by Meghan Markle

Polar Beverages can’t stop, won’t stop releasing limited-edition seltzers.

Remember last year when the Worcester, Massachusetts-based company came out with Dragon Whispers, Yeti Mischief and Mermaid Songs? Not only are the names ace, but they apparently tasted great too. Some said Unicorn Kisses tasted like fruit-flavored chewing gum with hints of strawberry and watermelon.

Yum.

This year is no different. No, we lied — this year's batch goes above and beyond. One flavor is apparently inspired by the Duchess of Sussex herself, Meghan (née Markle).

Plus, the collection is described in an emailed press release as "bright and hopeful, a gift from New England where winter sparkles." Cute.

Polar winter 2018 seltzer flavors

This winter's lineup includes two returners, Cranberry Cider and Ginger Lime Mule. Those two were on last winter’s limited-edition lineup.

Hibiscus Cloudberry is new, however, and described as "[shining] a light on the humble cloudberry while offering touches of exotic tartness."

(Side note: Who is Polar's copywriter? She/he deserves a raise.)

Up next, we have Blackberry Clementine, which might pair well with your breakfast. The name itself is pretty explanatory, but Polar describes it as a "jam-licious wonder."

Last but not least, there’s Vanilla Zen, "secretly inspired by our new American Princess, the magnificent Ms. Markle," the press release states.

According to a 2015 interview with The Chalkboard magazine, Meghan revealed her daily breakfast consists of either a Clean Cleanse vanilla shake with blueberries or an acai bowl with fresh berries, honey and bee pollen.

Polar’s Vanilla Zen flavor tastes like, yes, vanilla, but it also has hints of pomegranate. Or, as Polar puts it, it’s "a resplendent recipe of noble vanilla with serene touches of pomegranate."

"Inspired by a cool array of ingredients and influences, we conspired to surprise and delight all 10,000 taste buds in your mouth," Polar adds.

(Seriously, though, who is this copywriter?!)

These five flavors are limited in quantity too. Polar Beverages usually releases anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 cases according to Lisbet Crowley, the brand activation manager at Polar Beverages.

According to Boston Globe, the first batch shipped out Friday. To find a store near you, you can use Polar’s store finder.

The Conners Cast on How They Reacted to the Viral Tweet That Ended Roseanne

It was a defining moment in 2018, and it changed television for good. In May, Roseanne Barr sent a racist tweet out into the world, effectively bringing the hit Roseanne reboot to a screeching halt. Not surprisingly, Sara Gilbert, John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf all distinctly remember what they were doing when they heard the news.

In an exclusive interview with People, the costars are opening up about their initial reactions and how they feel heading into The Conners. Goodman said, “[I was] in my kitchen and maybe my daughter or my wife told me,” he said of Barr’s tweet. “It just didn’t seem true. Then it got true. I was consciously trying to accept it.”

It’s all basically a blur for Gilbert, who plays adult daughter Darlene.

“I don’t remember too much. It was more just, ‘Okay, what are we dealing with today?’ I was just kind of taking things one step at a time as they came,” Gilbert said.

As for Metcalf, who plays Aunt Jackie, she admits her mind immediately went to the future of the show. After hearing about Barr’s tweet “on the news, actually,” Metcalf said, “And I [first] thought, ‘Oh, I wonder if we still have a show.’ Because of how heavy everything became.”

When it became clear the show would likely be canceled, the costars tried to reconcile that reality with their love for this TV family — and for each other.

“There was a feeling of not wanting it to go away until we were ready. There was a debt owed to this fictional family. We want to finish telling this story,” Goodman told People, adding, “It was so unbelievable to do this show and it was like easy come, easy go.”

Then, a glimmer of hope came. Could the Roseanne reboot get a spinoff?

“There was a lot of risk involved. But we all decided as a group to take the risk, knowing that we could be judged by deciding to come back,” Metcalf said.

Now, with the premiere of The Conners mere weeks away on Oct. 16, the tight-knit TV family is channeling “any sadness that we feel over what we’ve lost” into the show in an authentic way, says Gilbert.

While it hasn’t officially been confirmed, Goodman and even Barr herself have implied the Conner matriarch will be written out of the show by way of death.

Although Barr did ultimately step aside and agree not to be involved with The Conners creatively or financially, she has spoken about the show on numerous occasions (and tweeted about it) since her highly publicized firing.

Still, despite any lingering bitterness, her former costars appreciate the fact she stepped out of the picture so they could move forward.

So, sure, things will undoubtedly be a bit different when the show returns. But, promises Goodman, the heart of the series remains unchanged.

“We’re leaning on each other when we do this show. And supporting each other — that’s a very strong feeling among us,” he said. “It’s different, but we can create something new from it. Let us finish the story on our own terms. Come along with us and see how we do it.”

Fruit-Shaped Trix Are Coming Back — & Our Inner Kid Is Overjoyed

Big news, '80s and '90s babes: fruit-shaped Trix (aka the best Trix) is making a comeback — and my inner 8-year-old can't stop screaming.

According to a press release, Trix Fruity Shapes is slated to make its return later this year thanks to consumer demand. "After receiving thousands of social media comments, mentions and requests for the return of the iconic cereal shape, Trix is officially announcing the return of the 90's favorite."

photo of trix fruity shapes cereal

"Trix cereal is beloved by our fans, and we heard loud and clear that they wanted to see the iconic shapes back in their bowls," Scott Baldwin, director of marketing for General Mills cereal, said in the release. "We're excited to continue that legacy, bringing an extra dose of joy to breakfast."

When Trix was initially released in 1954, it consisted of only three flavors: orange, lemon and raspberry. And while various flavors were introduced throughout the years, any Trix fan will tell you the biggest change to the breakfast cereal took place in 1991, when the company introduced the aforementioned shapes.

Of course, fruit-shaped Trix don't taste any different from their round counterparts, but try to convince any child of that. Seriously, try. Because in their mind — and my little mind — the berries burst a little more when they took on the new bunched form, as did other classic flavors: like lemony yellow, orangey orange, grapity purple and wild berry blue.

Taylor Swift Announces She's Opening the 2018 American Music Awards

In recent months, Taylor Swift’s public appearances have been decidedly low-key: rare outings with her Brit boyfriend Joe Alwyn, charity meet and greets and, of course, concerts. But it looks as though things are about to ramp up in a big way, because Swift just made a major musical announcement: She is returning to the spotlight, and she’s doing it at the 2018 American Music Awards.

More: Taylor Swift Refused to Be Victim-Blamed at Her Sexual Assault Trial

Swift took to social media to share the news, posting a short video on Instagram. “Good morning, America. It’s Taylor. I just wanted to say that I am going to be opening up the American Music Awards with a performance,” she revealed.

However, her exciting news was interrupted when her beloved cat Meredith — who’d been sitting beside her — started to walk out of the frame, prompting Swift to joke, “Don’t be too excited about it. My God.”

Swift reiterated the news about her big performance in the caption on the IG post, though. “I’m opening up the American Music Awards with a performance of ‘I Did Something Bad.’ Meredith is not excited, but I am. #AMAs.”

This will mark the singer’s first award show performance in three years — which is saying a lot considering she essentially used to be an award show staple. After going underground for a little bit, fighting off negativity connected to her alleged feud with Kanye West and returning triumphantly with Reputation — which includes tons of fanfare and a massively successful world tour — it's good to see Swift will be returning to the award show circuit too.

There's no word yet on what we can expect from her performance at the AMAs, but goodness knows we're beyond excited. We'll find out what she has in store when the AMAs air on Oct. 9.

Why Serena Williams' Speaks Out About Domestic Violence for Her Daughter's Sake

0
0

Serena Williams is taking an important stand for victims of domestic violence once again. She has been involved with the Purple Purse project, an Allstate program dedicated to raising awareness for and helping victims of domestic violence since 2017. This is not the first time she has spoken about her work for Purple Purse, either. In fact, she opened up about her involvement with the campaign with SheKnows at the #BlogHer17 conference last year. But now, as she goes into her second year with the project, she has another important reason to speak up about domestic violence: her 13-month-old baby girl, Olympia.

More: 10 Domestic Violence Facts We Should All Be Taking Very Seriously

In a recent interview with Elle, Williams commented, "[H]aving a daughter changes your outlook on so many things in the world. The last year has really changed my already passionate mindset," especially when she considers that Olympia could someday "be in a situation like that."

She went on to say that she "will continue to talk about uncomfortable topics" like domestic violence "in order to make a change."

Domestic violence is a very real — and very prevalent — problem. In fact, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 3 out of every 10 women and 1 out of every 10 men will experience rape, physical violence and/or stalking by a partner during their lifetime.

That said, it is important to note that domestic violence isn't always violent; in fact, there are many types of abuse — one can be abused verbally, mentally, emotionally, physically and/or sexually. They can also be abused culturally. However, the type of abuse nearest to Williams' heart is an invisible form of abuse known as financial abuse, which is when "abusers limit or prevent access to financial resources, like bank accounts and job opportunities," according to Purple Purse.

In fact, financial abuse is the subject of Williams' new ad, which Allstate produced in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"[Victims] can’t leave their situation[s], because they cannot financially afford to," Williams told Elle. "We want to make them aware that's not okay... and provide victims a safe way out of violence through financial tools and resources."

More: Yes, Reproductive Coercion Is Domestic Violence

That said, abuse can happen to anyone. Anyone. "There’s a lot of other women out there that could be my daughter or my sister that are in an [abusive] situation," Williams said. "You never know." But Williams wants all survivors to know there is help, there is hope and — perhaps most important — "it's not [their] fault."

If you or someone you know is in a dangerous, violent and/or controlling situation, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or 911.
