Aldi Announces 2 New Advent Calendars (& They Are Coming to the States)

Last year, Aldi — an international discount supermarket chain — made an epic announcement: Some of their stores would be carrying wine advent calendars for the 2017 holiday season. Of course, people were understandably excited. I mean, who doesn’t want a delicious and reasonably priced box of boozy goodness? However, those in the States were heartbroken when they learned the product would only be available overseas. But Aldi has good news for those in the Western hemisphere. Due to the Christmas calendar's overwhelming popularity, they will bringing the wine advent box back — and they will be bringing them stateside.

More: 11 Best Aldi Products That Rival Trader Joe's

According to Delish, each box will be $70 and will come with 24 mini-bottles of red, white, rosé and bubbly wine. (Great news, right?) Well, hold on because there is a catch. Since some states (like New York) have laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol in supermarkets, you may or may not be able to buy the calendar at your local Aldi.

That said, if wine isn’t your thing (or if, like me, you live in a no-sale state) don’t worry. Aldi has your back. In addition to releasing a wine advent calendar, Aldi has announced a cheese advent calendar, and this baby — full of cheddar, Gouda and Edam — will only set you back $13.

You can also buy one of each, because who doesn’t love wine and cheese?

And while it may seem early to be talking about the holidays, the wine and cheese advent calendars will hit store shelves soon — on Nov. 7 to be exact — so be sure to find your closest Aldi now, because these boxes are bound to sell out.

McDonald's Is Testing Out a New Sweet & Savory Breakfast Sandwich

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why? Well, because it provides you with essential calories, which give you energy. Energy that carries you not only through the morning but well into the afternoon. However, many Americans (like myself) grab this meal on the go. It is an oversight, an afterthought; we ingest this meal in haste. But if you happen to buy your breakfast out, I’ve got good news for you: McDonald’s is releasing a new breakfast sandwich — the McGriddles French toast breakfast sandwich — and boy does it sound yummy.

More: McDonald's Is Rolling Out Self-Serve Kiosks — Here's What You Need to Know

This sandwich, which is their first new breakfast sandwich in over five years, contains one egg, a slice of American cheese, a sausage patty and multiple slices of thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon. (Yes, there are two breakfast meats on this sandwich.) But wait; there’s more. Instead of being piled inside a plain bagel or stacked inside an English muffin, these goodies are stuffed between two slices of brioche bread that's been cooked in clarified butter and flavored with "cinnamon, spice and vanilla flavors."

According to McDonald’s chef Mike Lingo, "it’s everything you love about breakfast in one sandwich.”

The bad news is that, unfortunately, this sandwich is only sold during breakfast hours and — at this time — is limited to just over 200 locations in Minnesota.

The product is being test marketed, but hopefully, if it's well-received, other states will get the chance to try out this new menu item.

And the other bit of bad news is the product's calorie count. According to McDonald's, the McGriddles French toast breakfast sandwich will have 650 calories, 37 grams of fat and 385 milligrams of cholesterol — which is well over the recommended daily intake amount.

That said, if you are looking for a special treat (one that is both sweet and savory) and live in the Minnesota area, this sandwich may be for you.

This May Be the Real Reason Jennifer Garner Isn't Officially Divorcing Ben Affleck Yet

With the recent revelation that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s divorce could be dismissed, a glimmer of hope crept into fans’ hearts. However, the former couple will not be reuniting. According to Us Weekly, Garner has a very specific reason for drawing out the divorce — and it has everything to do with the exes' three children.

“Jen wanted to give Ben the time and opportunity to work on his health and sobriety,” a source told Us Weekly, referring to Affleck's struggle with alcohol addiction, which has been well documented in the media.

More: Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck’s Divorce May Get Dismissed

While new court documents show that the LA Superior Court has threatened to drop the divorce if it drags on, Garner reportedly isn’t fazed. “She isn’t in a rush,” the source said.

Garner’s reportedly relaxed attitude about the divorce doesn’t mean she still harbors romantic feelings for her former husband, though. Rather, she wants him to “be the best father he can be” to Violet, 12, Seraphina, 9, and Samuel, 6. “She wants what’s best for the kids.”

As the source tells it, Affleck is much more keen to finalize the divorce. “Ben would have liked to have finished this and closed the books sooner,” the source revealed of the actor and director, who has been dating SNL producer Lindsay Shookus for at least a year.

More: Ben Affleck Could Be Jennifer Garner’s New Neighbor

But Garner isn’t caving in until she knows she can count on Affleck’s commitment to his sobriety and co-parenting. Confirmed the source, “Jen just isn’t willing to settle the custody issues until she’s 100 percent certain that he’s clean. She’ll wait for him to prove he is taking it very seriously.”

And it would appear he currently is. Per a source, Affleck is “focused on being there for those in his life.” To help keep him on the straight and narrow, he attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings (which the source says he’s been doing for months) and meditation classes.

Enduring such personal struggles in the public eye can’t be easy — it’s easy to see how the added stress could exacerbate issues. In a recent interview with CBS News, Garner touched on that reality, opening up about her marriage being placed under a public microscope.

More: Jennifer Garner Reveals What She Learned From Marrying & Divorcing Ben Affleck

“What I think I’ve learned is that the scrutiny in your private life puts a pressure to make something happen,” she said. You feel a pressure to hurry up and get married, ‘cause you think that’ll end the ‘Are you engaged? Are they not?’ And that’s true in the reverse, as well. If there is any inkling of trouble, or if the tabloids decide there’s trouble, it can create trouble.”

Ultimately, though, the worst part of the split according to Garner was the split itself. “But to be honest, public scrutiny, everyone says, ‘Oh, you’ve had to go through this in public.’ The public isn’t what’s hard. What’s hard is going through it,” she told CBS.

The former pair, who was married for 10 years before announcing their separation in 2015, managed to make it through their difficult split with a friendship still intact. Once they clear this final hurdle, it would seem their transition from couple to co-parents will be complete.

Move Over Melbourne — the World Has a New Most Livable City

We hate to break it to you, Melbourne, Australia, but we've got some bad news. You may have had a cushy, seven-year reign, but there’s a new world’s most livable city.

Vienna, Austria.

More: Why You Should Definitely Have a Passport by Now

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit via Fortune, Austrian capital Vienna scored a near-perfect score of 99.1 out of 100 in the index. The annual survey considers 30 factors related to safety, the environment, health care, educational resources and more — according to The Economist. Was the U.S. anywhere to be found? Nope.

Six of the 10 top-scoring cities are in Australia and Canada. Also in the top 10 is Osaka, Japan (No. 3), which had consistently low crime rates and scored highly for its public transit. Copenhagen, Denmark, also made its way to the No. 9 spot thanks to its increased availability of affordable housing.

Here are the rest of the top 10 most livable cities:

  1. Vienna, Austria
  2. Melbourne, Australia
  3. Osaka, Japan
  4. Calgary, Canada
  5. Sydney, Australia
  6. Vancouver, Canada
  7. Tokyo, Japan
  8. Toronto, Canada
  9. Copenhagen, Denmark
  10. Adelaide, Australia

While they may all seem wildly different in culture and climate, one characteristic all these cities do share is they're all mid-size cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density.

More: These Are the Top 10 U.S. Destinations of 2018

As far as U.S. cities go, they continue to fall down the ranks. According to an infographic on Economist’s site, riots in Atlanta and Chicago affected their security rankings. However, Detroit reversed its decline thanks to lower crime rates and reinvestment in its downtown area. And Honolulu is the topped-ranked U.S. city in 23rd place, followed by Pittsburgh in 32nd.

Here are the bottom 10:

  • Damascus, Syria
  • Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • Lagos, Nigeria
  • Karachi, Pakistan
  • Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
  • Harare, Zimbabwe
  • Tripoli, Libya
  • Douala, Cameroon
  • Algiers, Algeria
  • Dakar, Senegal

If you’re a fan of Ellen DeGeneres’ smart style, you’re in luck. The talk show host just announced that she’ll be joining forces with Walmart to launch a new women’s fashion line called EV1. Bonus? You won’t even have to wait that long — the line is set to debut next month (September).

“I’m the Chief Design Enthusiast and Comfy Content Reviewer of EV1, which is a title I gave myself,” DeGeneres joked to People. Per a press release provided to the outlet, the collection will include around 60 items, with denim, T-shirts, accessories and more.

“The biggest inspiration was actually inclusiveness. We wanted it to appeal and be available to as many people as possible. Plus, it really is adorable,” DeGeneres said of the line, which is also said to have been inspired by the comedian’s “own confidence and optimism.”

Given just how adorable DeGeneres herself is, we’re inclined to agree with her assessment of the collection before we even get our hands on it. Besides, this is DeGeneres — you know any clothes she creates will have to be comfortable enough to dance in.

They’ll also be just as “effortlessly stylish” as DeGeneres according to the press release. That means you can expect tees with inspirational messages, “elevated denim,” “fantastic sneakers” and other items that represent the host’s playful, geek-chic vibe.

Just when you thought this news couldn’t get any better, here’s the cherry on top: All of the items in DeGeneres’ collection will be $30 or less. The multiyear partnership between DeGeneres and Walmart will kick off on Sept. 10, when the line launches on Walmart.com and in more than 2,300 stores.

More: 15 Times Ellen DeGeneres' Charity Donations Were Amazing

DeGeneres is the latest in an ever-expanding roster of celebrities teaming up with retailers in the fashion realm. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kathie Lee Gifford, Lauren Conrad and Daisy Fuentes are just a few of the many stars who’ve launched lines at the likes of Walmart, Target, Sears, Kohl's and more.

However, this isn’t DeGeneres’ first foray into fashion. Her popular collection ED by Ellen features sweatshirts, tees, baby clothes, shoes and accessories. The talk show host describes the line as “an extension of my lifestyle” that is “inspired by who I am as a person,” meaning it may offer a sneak peek into what DeGeneres' Walmart line will be like too.

No word yet, though, on whether or not DeGeneres’ collection will include her world-famous “name” brand underwear.

Ronda Rousey & Laura Cohan Tell Us Everything We Need to Know About Mile 22

$

Mile 22 is one of those visceral, nonstop, edge-of-your-seat action movies where the intensity only grows as the film goes on. What’s unique and even inspiring about the movie are the courageous female operatives played by two of our favorite actors, The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan and MMA fighter Ronda Rousey. Both women bring power, emotion and patriotism to the story as they fight to save America.

More: Mark Wahlberg's Daughters Want Him to Keep His Clothes On, Please

In the film, a secret paramilitary team sets out on a mission to transport Li Noor (Iko Uwais), a man who’s threatening to set off nuclear bombs in America unless he gets safely out of Southeast Asia. With several factions trying to kill Li, can the Americans get him to an airfield 22 miles away, where he can be extracted?

The American black ops team of Alice (Cohan) and Sam (Rousey) is led by Silva (Mark Wahlberg). Tackling roles typically played by men, Cohan and Rousey shift the gender balance in a male-dominated movie genre, breathing new life into it.

In the past, we’ve seen movies where women practically remove all their feminine aspects to fit in with their male counterparts. Fortunately, this is not the case in Mile 22. Like many women, Alice is also a mother, and she agonizes about not being with her 6-year-old daughter on her birthday. She has a mission to complete, though, and that’s her top priority.

Cohan explained, “Knowing that Alice is not putting her daughter first is what tears her apart. She thinks maybe there’s another way, but this team can’t consider another way. The only way to continue with this mission is to obliterate all other parts of life. It’s heartbreaking to me.”

More: Mark Wahlberg Makes Bold Move Following All the Money in the World Wage Scandal

Though not a mom herself, Cohan remembers a time when her own mother was forced to make sacrifices.

“My mom is an amazing woman, and there was a period of time when my mom was single and raising me and her sisters were helping,” she said. “It was pretty incredible how she was able to juggle all these different roles, and that’s what every mother has to do. It’s obviously magnified in Alice’s role because she’s protecting her whole country.”

Sam is a woman with a selfless heart who’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect our freedom, as Rousey described her character.

“Sam makes it very clear she doesn’t trust anyone, but it’s very important to her to be trustworthy. Her team is her family and she doesn’t expect anything back from what she is giving,” she said. “That willingness to put herself out there and be betrayed over and over again because she has hope that someone is worthy of her trust — the willingness to be hurt over and over again is one of the bravest things about her.”

Rousey said she relates to Sam, and it’s not surprising; as a professional fighter, Rousey also had a willingness to be hurt over and over again. Though such experiences can inspire cynicism, especially considering Rousey lost her last two fights, she insisted that like Sam, she sees life as a glass half full.

“There is an optimist inside of me, too, that can’t be brought down no matter what happens. I still hope for the best in people,” Rousey said, with genuine sincerity.

What’s extraordinary in the film is that the action scenes are elevated to the next level. This movie is so much more than a shoot-em-up because the actors succeed in bringing deep emotion into the fighting.

“A fight is just another way to communicate,” Cohan said. “That’s something I learned from our fight coordinator but also something I relearned from Ronda — how much expression there is, even when you’re not speaking. Actually, the most expressive and emotional part of shooting this movie was shooting that big fight scene. Especially since Alice has to keep it all bottled up. For me as an actor, I’ve had a lot of opportunity to express sorrow and grief and loss, but in this movie, I really can’t. Any tears are cut off before I can really go there. It taught me a lot about breathing emotion through every situation.”

Mile 22 also shows a form of patriotism not usually shown in these kinds of movies.

“What is unique about this film and this black ops team is they’re not about glory,” Rousey said. “They’re not about 'no man left behind.' It’s about the mission first. Being willing to leave people behind and being willing to be left behind — it’s a different kind of honor, a different kind of valor. It doesn’t mean our team is cowardly. We’re brave in another way. It’s a really good opportunity to show there’s more than one form of bravery and more than one form of patriotism.”

In other words, sometimes losing a battle is just as brave as winning one.

Though Rousey’s character is tough as steel in the film, she rejected the idea that her character is very masculine.

“We’re not in masculine roles but in human roles, and there happen to be men there. No one says, ‘You’re going into a very feminine role doing a military film.’ It has nothing to do with one or the other. Why does it need to be said? This movie is just part of that process of taking it from novelty to normalcy.”

Rousey also said that filmmakers need to open their minds to the diversity of the real world.

“We need to get out of our own way with our own ideas of how things should be. If I’m casting the role of a cop in Ohio, you probably picture a 40-year-old man. Why can’t a cop in Ohio be a 30-year-old woman? People tend to cast what is safe and what is assumed. Those little tiny roles here and there, even if it’s just the security guard, why not make it a woman once in a while? A firefighter is a person who fights fires and doesn’t have to be a dude in his late 20s with ash and sweat on his face. Why isn’t that image open?”

It’s a great question — one that hopefully will sort itself out as we keep moving forward.

When we asked Cohan if she’s planning to return to The Walking Dead, she gave a bit of a cryptic answer.

More: Shit's About to Get Real, According to The Walking Dead's New Synopsis

“The open-endedness of things is what’s so liberating. I haven’t had to choose to leave The Walking Dead to do other things, and I don’t know why everything has to be so rigid in life,” she said.

We feel liberated, too, knowing Cohan is at least open to coming back to the hit TV show. In the meantime, catch Mile 22 in theaters on Friday.

For Wells Adams & Sarah Hyland, It Wasn't Exactly Love at First Sight

Bachelorette alum Wells Adams just moved in with Sarah Hyland, suggesting their relationship is getting more serious by the minute. But Adams wasn’t always quite so committed to Hyland. As she tells it, Adams had his sights set on someone else entirely when they first started dating.

The interesting backstory about their relationship spilled out on Friday, when Hyland acted as a guest on Adams and Brandi Cyrus’ podcast, Your Favorite Thing.

More: Wells Adams & Sarah Hyland Took Their Relationship to the Next Level

“I remember being interested in Wells,” she said, then speaking directly to her now-boyfriend, “When you’d DM me being like, ‘Next time I’m in LA, we’re getting drinks and tacos,’ and I was like, ‘OK.’ And then I was like, 'I’m gonna listen to his podcast to see what’s up and see what he’s like.'”

But what’s that they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men? Oh, yes — they often go awry. Such was the case for Hyland, who inadvertently discovered through the podcast that Adams had been pursuing another love interest around the same time he started sliding into her DMs.

“I started from the beginning. I remember we were kind of talking online. There was this whole Liz thing,” Hyland explained, referring to a close musician friend of Cyrus’ who Adams had been hoping to hook up with.

It was at that point Hyland said she started to wonder whether Adams was just playing games, recalling, “I remember being like, ‘How serious is he actually about me? Is he actually serious about me or is this just a whatever thing?'”

So she did what any rational woman in her shoes would do: She googled. And once she found other-love-interest Liz online, Hyland admitted, she wound up becoming a fan of Liz's music.

Although Adams teases her now for “totally [doing] a deep-dive on this woman,” it’s all in good fun. Adams clearly was interested in Hyland, because the two have since crossed the threshold from girlfriend-boyfriend to roommates.

According to Us Weekly, friends figure the “extremely serious” couple will “be engaged by the end of next year.”

“If we’re gonna take the next step, this is the step we’ve got to take, to decide if we can handle living with one another,” Adams explained of his decision to move from Nashville to Hyland’s home in Los Angeles.

And hey, it’s not like Adams wasn’t already spending a fair amount of time on the West Coast anyway. The DJ can currently be seen reprising his role as the resident bartender on ABC’s soapy Bachelor spinoff, Bachelor in Paradise.

Weed-Killing Chemical Found in Popular Children's Breakfast Foods

On Wednesday, the Environmental Working Group — a nonprofit organization that helps “empower people to live healthier lives” — released the findings of a recent study regarding popular cereals and breakfast foods, and the results were not good.

According to the report, glyphosate, a weed-killing chemical that some have linked to cancer, has been found in a number of oat-based products. In fact, of the 45 products tested, 31 came back with levels higher than what some scientists deem safe for children.

More: Here Are All the Foods Being Recalled — Including This Popular Almond Milk

Of course, if glyphosate sounds familiar, there is good reason. It is the active chemical ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup weed killer and was the subject of a groundbreaking lawsuit earlier this week. However, news that it is (or may be) present in our food is alarming, especially when it is tied to so many child-friendly products, like Nature Valley Protein Oats 'n Honey granola, Quaker Dinosaur Egg Instant Oatmeal, Great Value Original Instant Oatmeal, Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal, Lucky Charms, Quaker Oats Old Fashioned oats, Quaker Steel Cut Oats and Kellogg's Nutri-Grain strawberry breakfast bars.

The question on many parents' minds (including my own) is how did the chemical get into our food — and in such high amounts. EWG believes they know the answer, and they say the contamination occurs during the harvest. “Each year, more than 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on American crops, primarily on ‘Roundup-ready’ corn and soybeans... [however,] glyphosate is also [being] sprayed just before harvest on wheat, barley, oats and beans that are not genetically engineered.”

That said, it is worth noting that the levels that EWG considers to be “high” are different from those set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency, and according to EPA standards, all of the test products are safe. As such, no products have been recalled at this time.

More: The Measurement Conversion Chart Every Baker Needs

In a statement to MSN, Quaker said: "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products. Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are significantly below any limits of the safety standards set by the EPA and the European Commission as safe for human consumption."

And General Mills echoed a similar sentiment in an interview with CBS News: "Our products are safe and without question they meet regulatory safety levels. The EPA has researched this issue and has set rules that we follow."

Pauley Perrette Publicly Slams Family Feud for 'Filthy' Questions

Don’t worry, guys — even though Pauley Perrette no longer graces our NCIS screens as the inimitable Abby, she’s still out here fighting the good fight. This week, that means taking Family Feud to task for its “filthy” language.

So, yes, you could say that Perrette is having a figurative feud with the Family Feud. However, one could easily argue she wasn’t trying to pick a fight — she was simply trying to effect change (or, at the very least, start a thoughtful dialogue) when she tweeted at the game show on Monday.

More: The Goodbye Tributes to NCIS' Pauley Perrette Are Everything

“Dear @FamilyFeudABC I love @SteveHarveyFM and I love game shows. WHY DO YOU MAKE YOUR PROGRAM SO FILTHY? Even with child players? No reason,” the former NCIS star wrote.

In a subsequent tweet, she added, “I’m a sociologist, love @FamilyFeudABC but WHY WHY are all the questions now filthy and sex questions? There's so much more to humans. C'mon."

While diehard fans of the Steve Harvey-hosted game show were quick to defend the program and point out that game shows have always included sexual innuendo, Perrette’s comments clearly struck a chord with many fans.

“It’s because society no longer has to hold back,” one fan wrote. “Filth and sexual content is all over our tvs and networks now. I miss the days where we had standards and morals.”

Another lamented, “My mom (88) won’t watch family feud anymore because it is too dirty. Everything doesn’t have to have a sexual twist to it.”

More: The Feud Between Pauley Perrette & CBS Is Real

To be fair, Perrette does have a point. Questions like “Name something a man might have in his pants when going on a hot date” and “Name something that might be hot and dirty” certainly seem to have been created to elicit a certain kind of response.

However, as some of Perrette’s fans pointed out, the show has been around for a long time — 42 years — and has seen numerous hosts, likely all relying at some point on off-color commentary for laughs.

Not to mention the fact that the syndicated game show continues to draw strong audience numbers. It hit a ratings record high in 2017, poising it to become the first nationally syndicated TV series to increase ratings for seven consecutive years, according to Deadline.

ABC has not yet responded to requests for a comment.

Heidi Klum Reveals Whether or Not She'd Have More Kids

Fresh off a romantic Italian vacation with boyfriend Tom Kaulitz, America’s Got Talent judge Heidi Klum is back to work for the first live show of the NBC talent competition — and the model-mom came back with a tan. Or, wait, could that glow be baby fever?

In an exclusive interview with Extra, Klum, 45, gamely answered questions about her love life from Extra’s Terri Seymour.

As for Kaulitz, 28, the mother-of-four insisted he is doing “great!” And that Italian vacation? Also great. “It was a lot of fun. Yeah. I went for two weeks with my kids, with my boyfriend — we had a great time,” Klum said.

When Seymour couldn’t resist commenting on Klum’s post-vacation glow, the Project Runway host explained, “It’s the heat in here, also (although Seymour countered, “It’s the love, it’s the love in your life”).

Klum may not have copped to having the glow of someone in love, but she did confirm that her relationship with Kaulitz is “going very good.” So good, in fact, that Klum might even consider expanding her family.

“You never know what, what happens in life, you know?” she said, adding, “Things happen. I don’t know what’s gonna happen.”

The same could be said for Klum’s relationship with Kaulitz. The pair, both originally from Germany, were first linked together in early March. Since then, the Tokio Hotel guitarist has accompanied Klum everywhere from the red carpet to exotic getaways.

During on perhaps prophetic interview prior to meeting Klum, Kaulitz described his dream girl as someone, well, a lot like his current love. “She should be extremely spontaneous and funny. I should be able to have an exciting time with her and well, she should have a nice outfit, nice clothes. One should simply be on the same wavelength and of course I should like her outer appearance,” he said (via IMDB).

Judging by Klum’s openness to the possibility of kids with Kaulitz, maybe they’ve both finally met their match.

Emma Stone Says She Changed Her Mind About Having Kids

There are many reasons to love Emma Stone, from her killer acting skills to her refreshing honesty about what it's like to live with an anxiety disorder. Now, she's getting real about her upcoming 30th birthday.

Like so many of us millennials, Stone is reflecting on her 20s and thinking about the future — and in the September issue of Elle, the Oscar winner shared that she's changed her mind about having kids — or rather, her previous decision to not have them.

More: Emma Stone Opens Up About How She Copes With Anxiety

As Stone told bestie Jennifer Lawrence, her 20s were all about her career. Now, she's thinking more about her personal life.

"It’s weird how much turning 30 crystallizes your life," Stone said. "Instead of just living the dreams that I had in my youth and getting to do the job that I love to do and making friends and going through all of that, it’s like, Now [sic] what do I actively want as an adult?"

More: Emma Stone Reveals How Male Actors Taking a Pay Cut Is Revolutionary

And apparently, two of the things Stone has decided she actively wants to do as an adult are to get married and have kids — but she has no plans to rush into either.

Stone told Lawrence she used to think that kids weren't in her future. "I never babysat or anything. As a teenager, I was like, 'I’m never getting married, I’m never having kids,'" she shared.

More: All the Times We Wished Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling Were a Couple IRL

Like everything else in her life, Stone plans to take a relaxed approach to her newfound desire to become a parent. She's allowing "what will be instead of trying to control the outcome."

Stone has all the makings to be an amazing mom, but her words are an important reminder that rushing into any major life decision like having kids is a recipe for disaster. It's easy to feel that pressure when your 30th birthday arrives, but the important thing in choosing to parent is just that: choosing to do so. Stone's choice is her own either way, and we love that she's keeping things flexible and in perspective. Then again, we'd expect nothing less from her.

Period Panties for Tweens Exist Now Thanks to Thinx

On Wednesday, Thinx — the creators of one of the most revolutionary menstrual hygiene products of the 21st century — announced they would be releasing a new line of period-proof underwear, Thinx (Btwn). But unlike traditional Thinx, which are marketed to menstruators in their reproductive years, Thinx (Btwn) are designed specifically for teens, preteens and young adults.

More: We Now Have More Period Product Options Than Ever — What a Time to Be Alive

In an emailed press release, Thinx CEO Maria Molland Selby explained the reasoning behind Thinx (Btwn): “First periods can be a scary and challenging time for both the parents and children. Our customers have repeatedly requested a product designed for young people with periods, and we listened. With the launch of THINX (BTWN), parents have the opportunity to help ease their pre-teen or teen into their first period by providing an easy to use and environmentally friendly solution to what can be an anxiety-ridden time.”

Preteen Gymnast Strikes Pose With Pink Ball(Btwn) will offer teens and tweens the same comfort and protection as regular Thinx — thanks to a patented four-layer technology system that absorbs menstrual flow — but they will also give young adults something greater: peace of mind, especially since the first few years of having a period are irregular and inconsistent.

At best.

“Anyone with a period can think back to their early years and probably recall at least one, if not multiple, cringe-worthy stories that involved getting their period,” added Siobhan Lonergan, chief brand officer at Thinx. “Imagine if period underwear were available at that time and the embarrassment it would have saved.”

Thinx (Btwn) will be available for young people ages 9 through 16 years old, and the line — which will have three styles (shorty, bikini and brief); two colors, Beet Juice and Tidal Wave; and one print, Let’s Polka! — will go on sale on Sept. 6.

One pair will retail for $23, while the three-pair starter pack will retail for $59.

"Mike and Ike suck," Duff declared (noted), and she laughingly apologized when Koma revealed just how many stores he had to visit in order to find the sweet black licorice candy she craves.

Duff also gave her 10 million followers the opportunity to weigh in on Koma's Good & Plenty journey. "Did he do good hunting down my pregnancy craving[?]" she captioned the video. (The average answer was a resounding yes, and we totally agree.)

In another Instagram Story, Duff shared that a friend had brought her "a very delicious coconut" drink. She's dreaming of wine, but luckily, Duff has pals in her corner who bring her the next best thing as she awaits the birth of her baby girl.

Of course, visiting six stores in search of candy is no big deal compared to experiencing a rough pregnancy — and Duff shared in July that hers has been "hard as hell."

Although she's not loving every minute of this pregnancy (relatable), the actor is staying positive as she awaits the birth of her second child. Over the weekend, Duff posted a video of herself stopping to smell the roses accompanied by a caption describing pregnancy as "special."

"Can’t help but imagine this little girl is growing and blooming in my belly like these roses that keep popping up at our house. Pregnancy is filled with so much emotion and some really tough long days but it sure is special," Duff wrote. "Feeling lots of love today with every movement and kick to the bladder lol. Appreciate that this one picked Matt and I to be her mommy and daddy. We gunna crush it for you baby B. You also have the sweetest big* brother waiting to meet and love you."

Duff's 6-year-old son with ex-husband Mike Comrie is also lending a hand as she prepares for the arrival of her baby girl. Although Luca Cruz is too young to help out with Good & Plenty searches, he's got an idea for his sister's name. In June, Duff told James Corden that Luca thinks Cafont Croissant would be the perfect name.

From late night Good & Plenty searches to name suggestions, Duff has some awesome support from her family.

Matt Lauer Divorce Settlement With Annette Roque Will Break the Bank

It's been a tumultuous year for disgraced former Today coanchor Matt Lauer, who has spent the better part of 2018 laying low (following sexual assault allegations made against him in late 2017) and working through a divorce from his now ex-wife, Annette Roque, after a nearly 20-year marriage. Now, according to Entertainment Tonight, Lauer is reportedly nearing the end of the divorce process with Roque, and he's set to pay a hefty sum to Roque as part of their settlement.

More: Matt Lauer Is Reportedly Furious About Divorce Details

ET reports that, as of Wednesday, a source is claiming Lauer will pay approximately $20 million dollars to Roque, ostensibly meant for both her and their three children, Jack, 17, Romy, 14, and Thijs, 11.

The source explained, "[Lauer and Roque have] relied on their attorney's throughout the process and now after a very long year, Matt has agreed to pay Annette about $20 million in the divorce. He finally decided it was time to finalize everything and move forward and focus on the kids. He has a lot of guilt about how things went down and he wants to make sure Annette is taken care of."

Additionally, the source claims that despite this divorce process beginning in a time of tumult and upheaval, which at one point included Lauer's move out of the family's Hamptons home becoming a source of tension between he and Roque, the former spouses seem to be finding the silver lining in their divorce and are feeling OK about it all.

"While they had issues and argued over properties and a final settlement, they have decided they can both put the children first and have come up with a plan,” the source reveals. "For both Matt and Annette, there is a noticeable difference in their attitude toward this entire process. They seem happier and their family and friends are thrilled to see they are both moving forward."

There's no word on what Lauer or Roque plan to do once they officially part ways. Rumors of a comeback for Lauer have been swirling since the spring, with reports growing more and more frequent as the summer wears on, but it remains unclear whether he will reenter the public sphere anytime soon.

10 Brands & Stores That Sell Cute, Affordable Workout Clothes

Great fitness attire is expertly cut so that it adheres to the body without getting in our way while we run, stretch and sweat. The right activewear can actually help to enhance performance or at the very least support certain body parts that, uh, jiggle in ways that can be totally uncomfortable and distracting.

But it's not all about function — we want our workout clothes to look good too. And if a workout outfit can seamlessly transition from a yoga class to happy hour — well, that's perfection. Unfortunately, some companies — ahem, Lululemon — are using this as an opportunity to sell their attire for sky-high prices.

Instead of getting annoyed with luxury brand prices, we can invest in one or two pieces from high-end brands, if that's our desire, and focus on stocking up on basic workout clothing from one of these fantastic 10 stores and online retailers.

More: 15 Must-Know Activewear Brands that Are Stylish, Functional & Worth the Price

1. Forever 21

From $7 tank tops to $17 capri pants, Forever 21 helps you easily stock up on every single one of your workout clothing needs, whether you're a runner or yogi. They have a lot of basics, but you'll also find some trendy items, like mesh panel leggings.

2. Jockey

There's a reason why Jockey has been around forever: Women trust that when they purchase one of their sports bras, which range from about $10 to $35, they're going to be so comfortable and soft that their bra is the last thing they'll be thinking about while they work up a sweat. Many of their styles also feature removable foam bra cups, which are perfect for women who want extra coverage and shape.

3. Athleta

No matter how you choose to get your heart rate up, Athleta has a tank, sweater or sneaker to suit you and your favorite sport. But the cool brand excels at active swimwear, which they've managed to make both functional and pretty. Their prices aren't always cheap — but you can usually put together a cute outfit for under 100 bucks.

4. Marika

If the thought of leaving your house in tight yoga pants is not at all appealing, consider Marika. They offer comfy — but stylish — pants for around $50, which you can easily see yourself wearing out on a coffee date. This fabulous brand also offers shape-enhancing pieces, like tummy control skorts and capri pants that give you that little boost of confidence you need to push your workout to the limit.

5. JunoActive

The geniuses who came up with a way for us to exercise and not have to deal with our own sweat deserve to be knighted. JunoActive, a trusted plus-size brand, offers basic leggings, T-shirts and tanks, many of which feature SoftWik fabric that lets your skin breathe and helps evaporate sweat. Their prices range from about $40 to $60 depending on the piece and fabric.

6. Reebok

Like Jockey, Reebok is an oldie, but a goodie. There are few brands that compare when it comes to covering all of your workout needs and Reebok is known for keeping up with trends — which is evident in the fact that they offer an entire CrossFit line. Almost every item, including their jackets, can be found for less than $100. You won't find super-girly clothing here, but everything is extremely functional and cool.

7. Old Navy

On those days when you just want a cute T-shirt and pair of leggings without all of the fuss, Old Navy has you covered. Sure, they offer a line of GoDRY tank tops — but, unlike some other brands, they don't jack up their prices or make a big deal about them. You can grab a tank for $8 or colorful capris for $15 and focus on your workout, not your clothing.

8. Under Armour

We know what you're thinking: Under Armour is not cheap. You're right, it isn't. But, that $45 you spend on a quality pair of lightweight leggings that feature UA HeatGear fabric will never snag or lose its shape. UA pieces feel like a second skin and, for that reason, you won't regret investing a little more for a tank, tee or pair of pants that last forever.

9. Fabletics

Fabletics is the athletic attire brand co-owned by Kate Hudson — but, you guys, it's the total opposite of a celeb brand because it's actually affordable. And cute. Did we mention cute? An adorable 3-piece outfit usually runs about $60 if you're a VIP member of the site. No, seriously.

10. Gap

You didn't think we'd get through this post without mentioning the Gap, right? The fact remains: No matter where you live, you'll find a Gap — and its prices, especially when they're having a sale, are always reasonable.

How to Keep Your Kids From Getting Sick Once School Starts

If you're a parent (or even if you're not), ideally, you've had a break from colds, flu and stomach viruses this summer. But as back-to-school time approaches, parents may start to get concerned about what that means for their kids and their health.

We wish we had a secret formula to shield our kids from all the germs and to keep them healthy, but when a bunch of children are together for hours a day, sicknesses spread like wildfire. What we do have, though, is access to health experts who told us all about ways you can help keep your kids from getting sick this school year.

Allergies

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology reminds us that children in pre-K through fourth grade need their parents to advocate for them and talk to the teacher each year about allergies. Let them know what kind(s) of allergies they have and make sure a health plan is in place. As they get older, they become better at speaking for themselves, but it is always important to remind them and encourage them to do so as well as make sure they know how to use medications in an emergency.

Sleep

Sleep is a big way to keep your child's immunity strong — teens should get about nine hours of sleep each night, and younger kids need about 10 hours per night, Dr. Gina Posner, a pediatrician at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, tells SheKnows. To get your kids settled and ready for bed on time, Posner suggests having them "avoid screen time about an hour before bedtime," as it helps them fall asleep faster.

More: Don't Ignore These 8 Signs That Your Baby Might Be Sick

Diet

Kids should have a well-balanced diet that includes lots of veggies, some fruits, proteins and a lot of water, Posner says, adding that they should avoid junk food — including sodas, juices, fast foods and candy.

Kids should also be eating yogurt, as it contains probiotics, which are "healthy bacteria your body needs to keep your immune system strong," Sara Siskind, a certified nutritional health counselor, tells SheKnows.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in shellfish, salmon, mackerel and herring can "help white blood cells produce a protein which helps clear flu viruses out of the body," she explains.

Stress

For our older kids and teens, Dr. Shayla Sullivant, a child and adolescent psychiatrist with Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, stresses how important it is that we check in with our kids on their mental health. One way to do this is by asking them how they are doing and letting them know you are worried about them if you see drastic changes in behavior, she explains.

Similarly, Dr. Mildred F. Carson, a board-certified pediatrician with over 15 years of experience, tells SheKnows that the right amount of sleep and a proper diet will also help your child cope with the stress a new school year can bring.

Regular exercise

Regular exercise is important “to keep your immune system strong so that the body is more able to fight off infections,” Carson says, adding that even 15 minutes a day can be beneficial.

Other helpful reminders

Even though it sounds basic, Posner says washing hands is the biggest deterrent when it comes to getting sick. Kids should wash their hands before they eat, after they play on the playground, and after they use the restroom, she says. It’s important to make sure they are using warm water and soap and washing for at least 20 seconds in order for the handwashing to be effective.

More: Turns Out, We're All Terrible at Washing Our Hands

Sneezing into their elbow (per instructions from President Barack Obama) will help contain germs, and not sharing drinks or food are all things our kids need to be reminded of constantly.

There's no doubt that kids are natural germ-spreaders. It takes a bit of extra work to follow the guidelines to protect you and your family, but it's worth it to make it through the school year with fewer sick days.

Kaitlyn Bristowe Opens Up About Those Shawn Booth Split Rumors

Bachelor Nation sees its fair share of rumors, from supposed cheating scandals to breakups. Season 11 Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe wants fans to know that any rumors about her engagement to Shawn Booth, to whom she gave her final rose, have no grounding in reality.

More: Ashley Iaconetti Sets the Record Straight on Those Cheating Rumors

As reported in Us Weekly, rumors have been flying that Bristowe and Booth's engagement is on the rocks, if not over completely. The couple has been together since they got engaged in 2015, but Bristowe has been spending the summer in Canada sans Booth. Hence, people are worried that something might be wrong. But Bristowe addressed the rumors on the most recent episode of her podcast, Off the Vine.

“So, here’s the truth," Bristowe said. "I’m in Canada because every single year, I have made a promise to myself and my family that I will come up every August and enjoy downtime with the people that I love in a country that I love. Family is so important to me. Relationships in general are very important to me. I put relationships first."

She continued, “Shawn did not come up with me because the guy just bought a gym. He bought a business. He has started something huge. He is the most dedicated person I’ve ever met. He’s gonna have to be there for months… We are both so busy, and unfortunately, that means we’re spending all of this time apart.”

Of course, Bristowe said, that can be hard on anyone: “If you’ve ever been a person who is running a successful brand or business and a person who is doing the same but in a different career path you know times can be tough. You are both always away. You’re exhausted at the end of the day. Sometimes, the relationship isn’t being put first, but does that mean you call it quits? No. You love the shit out of each other and you work through it. And [on] yourselves to be better. And you know that times aren’t always going to be smooth sailing.… You just have to get through those hurdles and enjoy the good times. Shawn and I are 110 percent committed to each other, and yes, we are still together.”

Whew. Time for a big sigh of relief. Having a relationship that's constantly in the public eye has got to be tough. After she assured listeners that she and Booth are definitely still in it for the long haul, Bristowe said, “To be honest, I didn’t think I would have to do this, but also, I shouldn’t be surprised. I was on a reality show that showed me getting engaged to somebody. [People] will become invested in us and our love story. I haven’t been wearing my engagement ring and not even noticing myself, people have pointed out that I apparently haven’t been liking his photos on Instagram.”

Bristowe also said she's been doing a "social media cleanse," which is totally in line with her desire to spend time in Canada with loved ones enjoying some time to herself. Some of the rumors about their relationship may also come from how long they've been engaged post-Bachelorette finale. Bristowe told Us in June that they've talked about starting their engagement over so that the show doesn't even factor into the timeline of how they plan their wedding.

“I feel like we are going backwards!" she told the outlet. "I feel like we’ve talked about him re-proposing because sometimes I don’t even want to wear a ring anymore cause I want him to have it just so he can surprise me. Because we always talk about him proposing when I’m not expecting it rather than when I’m on the show where I knew it was coming. So yeah, I’ve thought about giving the ring back to Shawn so that he could use it to propose when the time comes, and we can start wedding planning when we feel that it’s that time.”

Likewise, Booth told Us in May that he doesn't think the timeline of their relationship is all that strange, all things considered. “It blows my mind when people ask, ‘Why haven’t you gotten married?’" he said. "Because we’ve been together for three years and I’d like to see the timeline on people’s relationships and engagements who are asking us. Being together for three years without getting married doesn’t seem strange to me.”

Getting engaged on a reality show certainly puts pressure on a relationship, but it's refreshing to see Bristowe and Booth taking their time to let their relationship develop on their own terms. It's unfortunate that Bristowe had to address breakup rumors, but we're glad she did, if only so people will let things rest.

6 Pro Tips You Need to Keep Chemically Relaxed Hair Healthy

$

Although it may seem like the hair scales have completely tilted in favor of curly girl domination, chemical relaxers — or creams that semipermanently straighten hair — are still very much a thing. With any hair texture, curly or straight, establishing a routine that will keep strands healthy, hydrated and full requires a hell of a lot of work. For those who don’t have the time or interest to put into a multistep style or care routine, relaxers may seem like an easy fix, but it’s actually the opposite.

When any kind of chemical is involved, hair is instantly compromised — so your daily habits are crucial for maintaining the integrity and health of your mane. But if you’re someone who swears by a relaxer every couple of months, hairstylist Pekela Riley has some helpful info on exactly how to keep your locks luscious through it all.

More: What to Know About Dry Shampoo If You Have Textured Hair

Perfect the process

One of the most important things you can do for relaxed hair is stick to a consistent touch-up schedule. Although it varies from person to person, six to 10 weeks is the general range of time that you should go between treatments. Even if you feel like your roots are growing out fast and you’re due for a touch-up, stick it out and don’t re-treat too soon. It can lead to serious damage.

“Parts of the hair can be overprocessed and under-processed, which creates uneven tension and break points when not relaxed consistently,” Riley cautions. Also, try to avoid any overlap, which is when the relaxer is put on the previous section of hair that has already been treated. Make sure the formula is applied to new growth at the root.

Don’t erase the texture

Relaxers have always had a degree of healthiness to them, and because fewer stylists are doing them these days, they’re taking the time to become more educated on the application and how to make them healthier for hair. Where relaxers can go all wrong is when you try to make the strands too straight.

“There was a time when people would get mad if their hair wasn’t bone straight via a relaxer, which takes a lot of processing time. This extreme demand for straight hair led to the misuse of relaxers,” says Riley.

Relaxers were meant to relax a curl or wave, not straighten it out, which ultimately eliminates its elasticity. “The intention was to relax it enough to do a roller set, blow-dry or style it. The relaxer was a process to aid in styling ability,” says Riley. She always warns against combining keratin treatments with relaxers because it’s just too much for hair to handle.

Color with caution

If you want to add color on top of your relaxer, stick to either a semi- or demi-permanent dye — never permanent color, which is bound to cause breakage. “The exception is if you have really short hair, like a pixie — you can cut the hair faster than the rate of damage,” Riley notes.

Add metallic dyes that you mix with water to the list of don’ts as well. They don’t interact well with relaxed hair. Some spray-on hair colors that have metallic pigments in them should be avoided as well.

If you want to play with color, consider your style or cut. Natural hair allows for more color. There’s an option to have both relaxed and natural texture at the same time. “For a lot of women with medium- and short-length hair that needs relaxing on the back and sides — I leave the top and crown natural to have color. This merges the best of both worlds,” says Riley.

Try the texturizing method

A texturizer and regular relaxer are the same chemically. Often, texturizers are mild relaxers. The difference is the timing instruction, as texturizers don’t sit on the hair for as long. The texturizer processing time is fractional, which allows it just enough time to smooth the curl, versus a regular relaxer, which erases all waves and curls completely out of the hair.

Any texture can withstand a mild or normal relaxer. The variation comes with the degree of processing time needed, which should be adjusted according to the texture. The rule of thumb is you should only use the lowest strength of relaxer you need, so you have time to apply properly without overprocessing.

Look for signs of damage

Relaxed hair becomes unhealthy when it’s overprocessed. Overprocessing happens when the hair is broken down more than it should be, past the point where the keratin protein, naturally found in hair strands, is compromised.

All hair textures and styles, relaxed and curly, have the same fundamental needs. Riley calls them the Power Threes: moisture, protein and essential oils. “With curly hair, the curl in and of itself represents elasticity, so it can expand and contract back into place,” she says.

Relaxed hair takes out too much of the elasticity, so it cannot return into place without breaking. It becomes like a stick — if you try to pull on it, it can only break; there’s no wave, curl or recoil for it to contract back into place. Curly hair can stretch sometimes twice as much as relaxed hair without breaking. “You can tell it’s not healthy because it will be limp or mushy and very easily broken,” says Riley.

Maintain your mane

No matter what your texture style, curly or straight, keeping your ends trimmed will prevent splitting and breakage. Riley also suggests rotating among the Power Threes in three-week intervals: Do a moisture treatment the first week, switch to a protein treatment the second week, and for the third, swap in essential oils.

Also, keep heat styling on relaxed hair to a minimum. Any hair is susceptible to heat damage, but relaxed hair is even more vulnerable. If you’re going to use a curling or flat iron, set the temp to the lowest option. “You never ever need hot heat on relaxed hair,” says Riley.

The Back-to-School Checklist Every Mom Needs

$

The air is getting cooler (if you're up North, that is), it’s actually starting to get dark around the kids' bedtime, and some places have even gone real forward-thinking and busted out Halloween decorations (looking at you, Michaels). With back-to-school quickly approaching, it seems like everyone is gearing up for the big day. Office supplies are on sale, Pinterest is flooded with first-day-of-school gifts for teachers, your kid has grown yet another 2 inches seemingly overnight, and you feel the invisible pressure to prepare. Sure, we know the basics: Buy school supplies, and... and... um, wait. We forgot. Maybe get haircuts for everybody? Oh, crap. We've forgotten everything haven't we?

If you’re finding it a little tricky to switch your brain out of vacation mode, don’t panic. We've put together the one back-to-school checklist every parent needs to tick off before the school bus arrives. From adding school events to the calendar and stocking up on after-school snacks to finding a tutor (yes, before school starts), this list features everything you've forgotten and more. Because you know you forgot something.

More: How to Start the School Year Off on the Wrong Foot

Make a list of parent contacts

It's always good to make a list of parent contacts for some of your child's classmates. You never know when you'll need to make an emergency call to, say, print out a research paper only to find out at 10 p.m. your printer is out of ink, but your daughter's classmate Chelsea lives just down the street and her printer works fine. For example.

Go back-to-school supply shopping

Let the kids pick out their own supplies, be it covered in Paw Patrol or Run-D.M.C. It might drive you crazy, and you might prefer the neutral folder set so as not to distract from all the learning that will be going on, but guess what? They're not your school supplies. If your kid picks out their own supplies, they are more likely to use them and not forget it in their locker. Shopping can be stressful, but if you can’t find the "three-pack of name-brand highlighters" on your school’s list? Don’t sweat it. A highlighter is a highlighter.

Add school events to the calendar

Sure, you won't be able to add every single thing for the whole year, but you can definitely put school breaks, state testing, etc., in your calendar so you're not that one parent who drives their kid to school at 7 a.m. on a Monday only to find out it's staff-development day and there is no school.

Scout out new babysitters for emergency after-school coverage

Because you will. There will be a day when your car breaks down or your spouse forgot it was their turn to pick up the kids or your littlest fell off the monkey bars at recess and you won't make it home in time to meet the bus. Find backup.

More: Unique Lunchboxes That Will Make Your Kids Excited to Go Back to School

Stock up on after-school snacks

Try to balance your kids' favorite snacks with some healthy options, and let them choose one of each when they get home from school. Because really, don't we all need a little treat when we get home?

Get required immunizations & secure medical forms

Lots of parents forget to get their kids' forms from the pediatrician to the school prior to the first day, and depending on your school's rules, your child won't be allowed to attend school until those forms are in. So maybe let's highlight this one on the list.

Get the homework area ready, organized & stocked

No one can get any work done if their workspace is a mess, so start the year off right with a clean and uncluttered desk. Dump out the dust and hole-puncher circles from the drawers, sharpen the pencils and find a place to keep a water bottle handy so they stay hydrated and focused.

Start to ease your children into their school schedule

No one is saying it's going to be easy to get kids to wake up at the crack of dawn or go to bed earlier so they can, but hey, it's going to be a lot easier if you do it little by little instead of waiting until their alarm goes off on the first day.

More: First-Day-of-School Traditions You Haven't Thought of Yet

Visit the school with your children if necessary

If school is something that causes your kid anxiety, help quell that fear with a tour of their school and classroom when the building is devoid of throngs of students. Show them where their class is; walk them through their schedule; check out the bathrooms, their locker and the nurse's office.

Sort through fall clothing & donate what doesn’t fit

For some reason, it's always after you've bought a complete fall wardrobe that they decide to grow 2 inches in one month, totally foiling your plans of going six months without clothes shopping again. Before school starts, make sure everything still fits and clear out some space in their closet if it doesn't.

Follow your school’s social media accounts, email & text alerts

Chances are, your school has a few social media accounts, which will keep you up to date on the goings-on that take place and also serve as an alert if there are early dismissals, cancellations or an emergency at the school. If they have a text or email alert system, sign up for that as well so you stay in the loop if there are lockdown drills or other emergencies.

Find a tutor for the subjects your child has trouble in

If you wait until they are struggling, they have to play catch-up. If you find a tutor from the get go, they can assist your child with their homework and help them study so they never have to feel the frustration of not understanding something and don't fall behind.

Label all the things

This is pretty straightforward, but there are still some parents who think they don't need to label because their child is the only Emily in their class or they think they'll recognize their child's belongings. Well, sometimes, you won't. Or it will be the exact same coat, but you won't notice it's two sizes too big until you get home. Or you'll unpack their lunch box only to find remnants of a lunch that wasn't the lunch you packed that morning. Label. All. The. Things.

Feeling the need to be more involved?

Join the PTA, chair a committee, or be a room parent. It’s a lot of work, but you get to be more present and feel like you’re helping (plus no one questions if they find you pressed up against the classroom door trying to sneak a peek at your kid. “Oh, I’m the room parent... just... checking on the room…”)

On Aug. 16, we said a sad goodbye to an absolutely legendary woman and performer. The Associated Press confirmed on Thursday morning that, per a statement from her publicist Gwendolyn Quinn, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin died in her Detroit home after a grave illness put her in the hospital early in the week. She was 76 years old.

The family statement, released to AP, said, “Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute" in Detroit. The family added, “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family.”

The Recording Academy released a statement following Franklin's death that read:

"Aretha Franklin was an incomparable artist who came to be recognized as one of the most profound voices in music. Known universally as the Queen of Soul, she solidified her legendary status in the late 1960s with chart-topping recordings that included 'Respect,' 'A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like),' and 'Think.' During her six-decade career Aretha earned 44 GRAMMY® nominations, 18 GRAMMY Awards, and was recognized by the Recording Academy™ on several occasions for her remarkable accomplishments as an artist and philanthropist. We were privileged to honor her with the Recording Academy's GRAMMY Legend Award in 1991, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994, and as the 2008 MusiCares® Person of the Year for her extraordinary artistic achievements and charitable efforts. Her distinctive sound, unforgettable recordings, and giving spirit will continue to be celebrated worldwide. Aretha will be dearly missed, and our thoughts go out to her loved ones during this difficult time."

When news of her death hit social media Thursday morning, an outpouring of grief came from seemingly every corner of the internet. Director and producer Ava DuVernay tweeted some of Franklin's lyrics as well as a thank you to the late performer: "'Looking out on the morning rain / I used to feel so uninspired / And when I knew / I had to face another day / Lord, it made me feel so tired / Before the day I met you / Life was so unkind / But you’re the key to / My peace of mind.' Her voice/swagger was peerless. Thank you, #ArethaFranklin."

John Legend tweeted, "Salute to the Queen. The greatest vocalist I've ever known." He included several prayer hands emojis and #Aretha.

Ricky Martin tweeted, "Today we have lost one of the greatest. She will always be remembered and admired. Aretha Franklin, rest in peace. We love you."

Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted, "Lucky enough to have seen Aretha live exactly once, and this was it. Thank you for the music, we will be listening to you forever," along with a version of the video above, where Franklin performed "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman" at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015.

And Shonda Rhimes tweeted, simply, "Aretha."
