Here's Why Your Sex Drive Spikes During Your Period

$

Truth: I’m a hot mess during my period. I’m bloated and moody, and my boobs hurt like hell. Every inch of my body aches and my uterus thanks whomever developed on-demand in-home massage services. I scarf chocolate like there’s an impending zombie apocalypse. Most notably, though, is how high my sex drive is during my period. And more specifically the day before I bleed, when I want constant clitoral play and penetrative sex. And if I can’t have it IRL, I marathon masturbate. It’s one way to MacGyver your period pain away.

I’m no medical professional, but can attest to all the wonderful ways orgasms have helped my mental and physical health. At a time when my PMS symptoms are the absolute worst, sex helps alleviate my cramps and extreme mood swings. Orgasms increase blood flow and release into the brain a cocktail of chemicals, including the happy hormone oxytocin, which is basically nature’s off-brand version of Advil.

More: Masturbation Comes With Some Serious Health Benefits

“The strength and intensity of an orgasm can relieve cramps,” Judith Golden, a registered sex therapist in Toronto, told Best Health magazine. “Women who masturbate often report it helps relieve menstrual cramps and even improve the symptoms of PMS, such as irritability and crankiness.”

According to a 2017 Time article, the average adult enjoys sex 54 times a year, or a little more than once a week. I’m well above average, yet still want more. In my perfect world, I’d have sex every single day, multiple times if I could finagle partner participation. During my period — I want it nonstop. It can be a messy situation, but I love period sex like nobody’s business. Like, I love it-love it.

But why does this happen? And is it just me, or do other menstruators have the same experience?

Turns out vulva-owners may feel a little more in the mood during their period because they feel safe from risk of pregnancy, OB-GYN Dr. Carolyn DeLucia tells SheKnows.

“Unfortunately, this is not always completely safe either,” she says. “Women who have short cycles, for example only 21 days between periods, will ovulate on Day 7. Sperm lives for 72 hours, so even though they are still bleeding on Day 4 and have sex, they can get pregnant.”

DeLucia points out that women may also experience an increase in arousal around ovulation (Week 3 in a four-week cycle). “With our hormone fluctuations, we naturally are more interested mid-cycle with ovulation,” DeLucia says. “The peaks of estrogen at that point makes our libido spike, and we desire sex more.” Maybe it’s our evolutionary drive to reproduce or the fact that we’re more fertile within this window, but sex seems to heat up around this date.

Hormonal contraception blocks ovulation, so it may dull libido. “Many women notice a decrease in libido while on oral contraception,” DeLucia notes. “Hormonal IUDs do not have this influence, as they do not stop ovulation.”

More: Here's Why (& How) I Masturbate Every Day

Other factors that may affect libido include work and stress, which can also affect our mood. “When we are stressed and unhappy, it’s rare to feel interested in sex,” says DeLucia. So depending upon your birth control, it may work for or against your sex drive. Take note.

The bottom line: There’s a definite connection between your sex drive and menstrual cycle. Some people with vulvas may feel increased sexual energy during ovulation. For others, it’s during their actual period.

Like many areas of women’s health and sexuality, there aren’t a lot of studies or research that speak to this topic. That said, biologically speaking, it makes a lot of sense that women feel extra sexy around ovulation. We do know that there’s a surge in estrogen and testosterone, which can boost a woman’s libido. Plus, from an evolutionary standpoint, chances of reproduction are more likely during this time than other stages of the menstrual cycle.

So, if you're feeling particularly sexually charged before or during your period, you're not alone. And even if you don't have a partner readily available, never be afraid to take matters into your own hands.

This Is Us Casts Will & Grace Alum as Jack's Brother, & He Is So Grateful

Are you ready to meet Jack Pearson's brother? On Tuesday, Deadline reported that Michael Angarano is joining This Is Us season three as Nicky Pearson. Will & Grace fans best know him as Jack McFarland's son, Elliot.

Angarano is beyond thrilled for the opportunity to join the beloved series. After the news broke, he took to Twitter and wrote, "THIS IS COOL." He also tweeted, "i am beyond grateful and very excited to be a part of this show - my grandmother even told her dentist."

The ThisIsUsWriters Twitter account welcomed Angarano with open arms by writing, "This is gonna be awesome. Welcome to the family @MichaelAngarano, we're so excited to have you. #ThisIsUs #ThisIsNicky #ThisIsGonnaBeBananas." The actor replied, "thank you guys...i’m busting over here."

More: This Is Us Season 3 Is Bringing Back Jack Pearson in an Important Way

Nicky was first introduced in season two, and it was a shock to learn Jack even had a brother. He never talked about him before, but This Is Us never stops with the surprises. Nicky and Jack served together in Vietnam, but Nicky died in the war. The exact cause of his death is unknown at this time.

In July, the drama's creator, Dan Fogelman, told Deadline season three will be "diving heavy" into Jack's time in Vietnam during the war. "One of my writing heroes, Tim O’Brien, who wrote The Things They Carried and many other novels, I just finished actually writing an episode with him that’s an entire Vietnam Jack backstory episode, early in our season," Fogelman dished. "That’s going to be really incredibly exciting and unusual."

Justin Hartley, who plays adult Kevin, will also factor into the Vietnam story. In the season two finale, fans watched as Kevin headed to the country in Asia with Zoe, Beth's cousin. Hartley told Entertainment Weekly in August, "He’s going there — it’s a healing thing for him — so he’s going to get a lot of information, some stuff that he didn’t know and didn’t expect," Hartley said. "And it’s going to jar a few things."

This Is Us, Jack, NIcky

More: Here's the First Picture of Milo Ventimiglia Back on the Set of This Is Us

According to Hartley, Kevin will discover some heartbreaking and shocking things about Jack's time in Vietnam. "It’s not what anyone is expecting," he teased. "No one is going to see it coming. It’s ambitious stuff…. Here’s the cool thing about it: At the end of season three when you go back and watch the beginning of the series, you’re going to [be] like, 'Wow, it all works,' but you never would see any of this coming. I don’t know what those writers are eating, but it’s brain food. They’re brilliant."

As exciting as it will be to meet Nicky, his relationship with Jack will probably pull on fans' heartstrings. Basically, everybody better stock up on tissues because season three will probably be just as much of a tearjerker as the first two seasons.

Starbucks Announces 2 New Beverages & They're Unlike Anything Else on the Menu

Good news, coffee fans: Starbucks, America’s favorite purveyor of all things hot, cold and caffeinated, has announced two new beverages — the almond protein-blended cold brew and the cacao protein-blended cold brew — and both drinks are available in stores now.

But what is a “protein-blended cold brew” you ask?

More: Starbucks Is Adding 2 New Frappuccinos to Their Permanent Menu

Well, in short, it is a frappélike beverage that mixes Starbucks' infamous cold-brew coffee with a plant-based protein powder.

(Yum-my!)

That said, while the two new drinks share a few main ingredients, the almond variety does differ from the cacao variety in a few ways: the former uses banana-date sweetener, almond butter and almond milk, while the latter contains banana-date sweetener, coconut milk and cacao powder. However, according to Starbucks, both drinks can be customized to suit your tastes and needs — and yes, you can “pump up the protein.”

But wait, it gets better: a Starbucks representative told Refinery29 that the new protein-blended cold brews are vegan. “Every ingredient that goes into the Protein Blended Cold Brews has been certified vegan.” However, since the drinks will be prepared alongside other non-vegan offerings, customers should be aware that cross-contamination is possible.

More: Starbucks Adds 3 New Permanent Items to Its Menu This Summer

The only bad news (if there is bad news) is that for now, these drinks are only available in the grande size. However, even at just 16 ounces their “stats” are impressive: Each beverage contains anywhere from 10 to 12 grams of protein and 180 milligrams of caffeine, making them the perfect morning pick-me-up or midday post-workout meal. So be sure to get yours soon, as supplies are limited and the protein blended beverages will only be available through the fall.

Meghan Markle Wrote About Wanting to Be a Princess Years Before Meeting Prince Harry

Many girls grow up with dreams of becoming a princess. They wear big, poofy dresses and cheap plastic crowns. They perfect their hand wave and curtsy and even the occasional bow, and they host balls and parties and afternoon teas, and little Meghan Markle was no different. In fact, according to People, the now-Duchess of Sussex was still dreaming about the princess life a few years ago, writing about her aspirations on her blog, The Tig.

More: Meghan Markle Just Made History by Receiving This Award Nomination

Meghan wrote, “Little girls dream of being princesses. I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power,” which, for those unaware, was a 1985 cartoon character known for strength and feminist power. But the dream didn’t end there. Meghan went on to say that she (and many women) keep the princess fantasy alive long after childhood.

“Grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy. Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate.”

And she’s right. There is a reason women (and men) are obsessed with the royal family. They seem to embody glitz, glam, class, dignity, poise and respect.

More: Meghan Markle Can't Wait to Be a Mom

Of course, when Meghan wrote these words, she had no idea her childhood fantasy would soon become a reality of sorts. The aforementioned post was written in 2014, and Prince Harry and Meghan began dating in July 2016 — after meeting on a blind date. And while Meghan dropped her blog shortly after her relationship with Prince Harry became serious, we still adore the fact that she was so open about her princess dreams because through them, we know dreams can (and really do) come true.

The Grey's Anatomy Cast Is Getting Sentimental About Its Historic Upcoming Season

This September, the Shonda Rhimes medical drama Grey's Anatomy will premiere its 15th season, which is kind of incredible. Season 15 marks Grey's as ABC's longest-running primetime drama and ties it with ER for longest-running medical drama in the U.S. according to E! News, which means the cast is celebrating this historic TV moment.

More: The First Photos of Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Are Here, & They're Promising

"Starting this thing, I would have never guessed it that we're here 15 seasons later," James Pickens Jr. (who plays Dr. Richard Webber on the series) told E! News at the 2018 Television Critics Association presentation. "It's just a testament to the loyalty our fans have showed us all these seasons, the incredible creative power that is Shonda Rhimes… it just doesn't take one person to make this come to fruition…"

Costar Kevin McKidd (who plays Dr. Owen Hunt) told E! that he still recalls discussing how the show might run for two more seasons after season five — a full decade ago. "It's unbelievable," he said. "I've never had a gig run this long in my life as an actor."

McKidd added, "It's going to be weird when it's all over, we're all like a family now. I can't imagine life without this show and this character. I'm not quite ready to even start thinking about that… It's changed my life in many, many brilliant, amazing ways, and I feel really grateful."

Meanwhile, Kim Raver, who steps back into a series-regular position as Dr. Teddy Altman in season 15, said, "To be able to arrive at 15 years of television, top, top-notch television, it talks to what an amazing collaboration this show is. And I think, also, for me to go back and see how many women [are involved]... it really is an amazing place to work. To be in season 15 is really a gift."

In addition to Raver, there are other casting changes to look forward to this fall. Grey's said goodbye to several cast members in season 14, including Martin Henderson (Dr. Nathan Riggs), Jason George (Dr. Ben Warren), Jessica Capshaw (Dr. Arizona Robbins) and Sarah Drew (Dr. April Kepner) according to Bustle. Meanwhile, members of the original core cast, including Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey), Justin Chambers (Dr. Alex Karev), Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) and Pickens are sticking around, as well as familiar faces like McKidd, Jesse Williams (Dr. Jackson Avery), Camilla Luddington (Dr. Jo Wilson), Caterina Scorsone (Dr. Amelia Shepherd), Kelly McCreary (Dr. Maggie Pierce) and Giacomo Gianniotti (Dr. Andrew DeLuca).

Bustle also reports that there are just 10 returning regulars for season 15, making this the smallest Grey's cast since season two. TVLine reports that the overall theme for the upcoming season is "The Season of Love" and that it picks up right where season 14 left off.

More: The Official Grey's Anatomy Season 15 Theme Is for the Fans

Grey's has not officially been renewed beyond the upcoming 15th season, but Pompeo signed a contract with ABC in January, per Deadline, for at least two more years (so, seasons 15 and 16). In addition to making more than $550,000 per episode, making Pompeo the highest-paid female actor on TV today, the contract also adds producing duties to her plate.

Does all of this mean Pompeo's character, Meredith, will finally find true love in season 15? We don't know, but every tidbit of info that comes out has us wondering where Grey's Anatomy will go next. Season 16 doesn't seem like a difficult stretch for the powerhouse series — not even a little bit.

The First Photo of the Mulan Live-Action Remake Is Here, & Everybody Loves It

After much anticipation, as well as a five-continent search for their titular star, Disney has officially begun production on their live-action remake of Mulan. They celebrated the milestone online this morning by posting the first image from the movie — actor Liu Yifei looking like an absolute badass while holding a double-edged Chinese straight sword.

The still, which has garnered over 10,000 comments and 28,000 likes in less than a day, seems to show the slightly darker and more serious tone of the movie, which we also know will not feature the original film's comedic sidekick, the dragon Mushu (Eddie Murphy). It also shows that Yifei is the perfect person for this starring role, in which a young girl goes to war in ancient China in order to save her ailing dad from dying in battle.

More: Does Mulan  Still Hold Up 20 Years Later

Yifei was chosen out of over 1,000 actors for the part. The 30-year-old actor, who grew up in both China and the United States, has been acting, modeling and singing since she was a teen and is already well-known overseas. Known as "fairy sister" for her sweet image, she's expected to armor up and kick butt in what director Niki Caro (The Zookeeper's Wife) has called a "girly martial arts extravaganza."

More: All the Disney Remakes Happening Through 2019

While we only have this single still from the production, we do know a good deal about the film, which has a tentative March 7, 2020 release date. In addition to Yifei, the cast includes Jet Li (Hero) as the emperor, Donnie Yen (Rogue One) as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee (Lilo and Stitch) as the villain and Yoson An as Mulan's love interest.

The screenplay was written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin along with husband-and-wife team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who are well-known for their work on blockbusters like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Jurassic World

The reboot is being filmed in both China and New Zealand and won't include musical numbers, though there will be a score.

Caro also shared an image on social media on the first day of production along with the message, "Mulan. Day #1. Reflections," which references the popular song from the original movie.

It's unclear where this image originates, but we are super-excited!

The original Mulan was released in 1998 and grossed over $300 million worldwide in addition to a Oscar nomination for best film.

Joanna Gaines Is Showing Off Baby Crew's Nursery & Giving Us Design Tips

When Joanna and Chip Gaines announced the birth of their newest addition to the family, son Crew, on June 23, we were excited to see what the little fella looked like. But equally as intriguing was the space he'd call his own — a nursery designed by his own mom, who just happens to be an interior design guru.

More: Joanna Gaines' Baby Shower Was the Stuff of Bookworm Dreams

In the new issue of Magnolia Journal, Gaines shares in an essay her inspiration for Crew's room along with tips for designing your own on-trend nursery.

Most important? Be flexible! It turns out that because of space limitations in their current home, all four of the older kids share rooms. For Crew, they converted the existing den into his sanctuary.

"While we didn't have any spare rooms at the farm, this challenge seemed like an opportunity to get creative with the square footage we had," she wrote.

More: Joanna Gaines Says Her 5th Pregnancy Makes Her "Feel 25" Again

Even though the nursery is the perfect blend of modern and rustic and certainly worthy of a magazine spread, it's anything but generic. There are personal touches all around, like a wall hanging made from the outfit Crew wore home for the first time and a set of custom black bookshelves filled with stories his older siblings can read to him.

The key to making the space feel peaceful and for blending the mix of new, vintage and sentimental pieces is keeping a neutral color palette, according to Gaines.

You can peep some of the nursery details on Gaines' Instagram or check out the fall 2018 issue of Magnolia Journal to read her whole essay.

Move Over, Thin Mints — There's a New Girl Scout Cookie in Town

As a kid, waiting to see if there would be any new Girl Scout cookie flavors was always one of the most exciting parts of the year. There were hits (I would sell my husband for one more box of Praline Royales) and flops (cinnamon-oatmeal raisin bars aren't cookies for the love of God), but either way, my mom would dutifully buy a box of each variety I was selling with my troop.

More: Girl Scout Sells 300 Boxes of Cookies Outside Marijuana Dispensary

Well, this year, I'm going to have to make sure I have cash every time I leave the house, because the Girl Scouts are selling a new gluten-free cookie that sounds totally luxurious. It's the salted caramel chocolate chip cookie! The name alone conjures images of a 10-second warm-up in the microwave and a cold glass of milk.

The chewy cookie is dotted with semi-sweet chocolate chips and caramel and has totally embraced the sweet-and-salty trend thanks to a sprinkle of sea salt on top. One three-cookie serving comes in at less than 200 calories, which isn't bad for a dessert.

The salted caramel chocolate chip cookie joins Toffee-tastic cookies as a gluten-free option, though availability of either flavor will vary based on location.

The other cookies on offer for 2019 include classics (Thin Mints, Caramel deLites/Samoas, peanut butter patties/Tagalongs, shortbread/Trefoils, and peanut butter sandwiches/Do-si-dos) and some newer arrivals (two types of s'mores cookie depending on location, Thanks-A-Lot, Savannah Smiles and Lemonades), all of which sound scrumptious. And since the profits from each box go back to helping the Girl Scouts and funds their programming, it totally justifies buying a box (or 10) the next time you're ambushed by your local troop.

What’s the Right Age for Kids to Wear Makeup?

$
0
0

My almost-8-year-old daughter has never mentioned makeup to me. She's seen me apply it; she's seen false lashes and an array of rainbow colors on her 16-year-old cousin's face, and she's seen several of her classmates turn up to the school disco with glossy lips and painted nails.

I've always secretly been relieved that she's shown no interest in makeup, even when so many of her peers do. Not because I want her to stay a baby forever, but because I don't want her to try to grow up too quickly. But I'm preparing myself for the day when she comes downstairs with her cheeks smeared with whatever she's found in my makeup bag.

Author Laurie Endicott Thomas, a medical researcher, editor and journalist, tells SheKnows that young girls "generally want to wear makeup for simple reasons... They want to bond with their friends by doing the same thing that their friends are doing... or they want to show that they are not babies anymore."

Boys, on the other hand, generally have a very different reason for wearing makeup, says Endicott Thomas. "For boys, wearing makeup is generally a gesture of defiance against a society that is hostile to them. It can be a way of fitting in with a clique of misfits. Makeup and 'weird' clothes can even be an odd sort of protective coloration. If he wears makeup and unusual clothes, he can feel that he is being attacked because of something superficial rather than being rejected for who he is."

More: How to Teach Kids to Stand Up for Themselves

Before you impose rules about makeup on your kids of any gender, consider the child's actual age as well as their emotional and developmental age, Carrie Krawiec, licensed marriage and family therapist, tells SheKnows. And don't worry about what is acceptable in other families, she says, as long as you set an expectation for what is appropriate in your own. "Because there are varieties of makeup, you may consider ranking them in order if how you see them from an age perspective, like perhaps lip gloss and blush may be seen as acceptable for younger kids, but eyeliner as [for] older [children]," says Krawiec.

This is the approach taken by Lara, a mom of two from San Diego, California. "My daughter started wearing light makeup (lip gloss and mascara) in fourth grade," she tells SheKnows. "Initially, I thought she was too young, but when I realized most of her friends already wore makeup, I didn't want her to feel excluded. I do have rules about what sort of makeup she can and can't wear, though. I'm trying to teach her that 'less is more.'"

More: What Is a "Safe" Sleepover, & When Is Your Kid Ready?

Sasha, a mom of three from Chicago, Illinois, has a very different approach. "My daughters know my stance on makeup, which is none at all until they are 16," she tells SheKnows. "I know that might seem strict to other parents, but I want them to grow up with confidence in their natural beauty and not feel that they have to hide behind or change their appearance with makeup."

If you do let younger kids wear makeup, you might want to have some rules about when it's acceptable and when it's not. The ability to wear makeup could be a treat your child earns for showing maturity and responsible behavior. "Identify and explain to your child that wearing makeup is a privilege," suggests Krawiec. "If there are things you would like your child to improve upon, such as cleaning their room or completing homework, consider using makeup as a privilege that can be earned.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules, remember that if you are overly restrictive of your child's self-expression, they may rebel. Before you pick a fight with your child about makeup (or anything else), ask yourself a few simple questions: Will this affect my child's health? Will this affect my child's grades? Will this cause my child to hurt other people?

"If you answer no to all three questions, that's a good indication that you probably shouldn't pick that fight," she says. Doing so can cause you to risk aligning yourself with people who might judge (or, especially with boys, even bully) your child over their decision to wear makeup. "So even if you 'win' the battle, you lose, because you have harmed your relationship with your child for no good reason," warns Endicott Thomas.

More: My Mom Sent Me to a "Concentration Camp for Wayward Teens"

If you're concerned about negative responses from other people — particularly if your son is wearing makeup — Krawiec recommends having some standard responses up your sleeve, such as "This was a decision we made as a family based on our child's interests and our guidance as parents."

Ultimately, you don't have to answer to other people. Being supportive of your child — with certain reasonable boundaries in place — is far more important than whether someone thinks your daughter or son is too young to wear a little lip gloss.

George & Amal Clooney May Be Invited to Another Royal Event This Year

Dust off your biggest, fanciest hats and fascinators because George and Amal Clooney are likely headed off to their second big royal wedding of the year. After attending the marriage of the now-Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan (née Markle) this spring, the A-list pair will most probably head to the nuptials of Princess Eugenie of York and nightclub manager Jack Brooksbank in mid-October.

After almost stealing the show in their wedding day duds (Amal stunned in a yellow short-sleeve Stella McCartney dress and matching hat, while George wore a gray suit with matching yellow tie and pocket square), they might get a chance to impress again at the same fancy venue, St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

More: We're So Jealous of George & Amal Clooney's Weekend Plans

How do George and Amal know all of these actual princes and princesses? The couple knew Harry and Meghan because all four are deeply involved in humanitarian work around the world — Amal is a human rights attorney who is nationally acclaimed. The barrister also set Meghan up with her hairdresser in the months before the wedding.

Oddly, though, the Clooneys know Eugenie and Brooksbank for a totally different reason: Brooksbank happens to be an ambassador for Clooney's and Rande Gerber’s Casamigos Tequila brand in the United Kingdom.

While the wedding won't be an incredibly huge international event like Harry and Meghan's was, it will still be big and fancy. All of the big royal hitters will be there, although there will probably be a few notable absences because Pippa Middleton, the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, more commonly known as Kate Middleton, is due to have her baby around the same date. The date was planned so that it didn't conflict with Harry and Meghan's tour of Australia, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga and New Zealand, which will begin nearer the end of October. There are reports that Charlotte, 3, will be a flower girl, while George, 5, will serve as a page.

The couple has also announced that their wedding will be eco-friendly: For starters, there won't be any plastic involved.

About 1,200 members of the public have been invited too, so it's sure to be a big and fun event.

Princess Eugenie (the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson and the first cousin of Harry) and Brooksbank met several years ago while on a ski trip in Switzerland. The princess is already sporting a pink padparadscha sapphire engagement ring and will likely wear her mom's York diamond tiara. It doesn't get more princess-y than that.

Should Managers Treat Parents & Nonparents the Same?

By Mary Beth Ferrante

Research detailed by The New York Times shows that when employees become parents, women face a significant roadblock at the office known as the "maternal wall." Though they've proven successful before giving birth, women are often required to go above and beyond to demonstrate their worth and competency after maternity leave.  Too many times, women, particularly mothers, share their stories of getting passed up for promotions, pushed into non-client-facing roles and left out of networking opportunities. And on top of that, mothers are often judged by their coworkers for leaving “early” to pick up their children and also judged if they stay late and don’t go home to be with their children. Being a working parent is tough.

But here’s the rub. Colleagues without children also have it tough!

More: People Who Quit Their Jobs Gracefully Make Sure They Do These 6 Things

Managers often expect those people on their teams without children to absorb the "extra" workload. They expect them to work the late hours or attend the last-minute client event and may not recognize that children or not, employees all long for more flexibility and understanding to accomplish their personal goals as well.

To truly create an empathetic and supportive team, managers must find ways that support the entire team regardless of their parental status.

Though people’s reasons for seeking a more flexible schedule may vary, the policies for managing their time should be the same. If you give people time off to take care of a sick child, then you should give people time off to pursue personal endeavors. In order to lessen the burden placed on childless/single individuals, managers should propagate an office culture that considers everyone's need for unconventional hours.

Those who utilize a holistic approach to managing teams ensure that all employees are offered the same flexibility regardless of the reason. This will not only strengthen your relationship with all of your staff, but it will foster a greater bond between employees and their teams.

More: Understaffed? Here's How to Deal With One of the Most Stressful Situations for a Manager

Here are three ways to start thinking about how you can supervise employees' time in a way that benefits your entire staff.

1. Promote the greater good

Managers set the tone and create the atmosphere for success in the office. Devise a plan to help your teams support one another during important professional and personal moments in their lives. Encourage employees to add personal dates to their team's calendar so everyone will know when he or she will be out and how that could affect their assignments that day. Facilitate a discussion with your team on a regular basis to connect how members are handling their workloads and how things can be shifted in order to support the greater team.

2. Establish core hours

Provide employees with a company-wide schedule that focuses on core hours when all team members are expected to be online and available. For example, if the majority of your clients engage with staff before noon or meetings typically happen in the morning, explain that everyone must be in the office or available online from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. during that critical time frame. Beyond those core hours, allow individuals to find the best shifts that work for them. Trust your employees and believe them when they say certain hours work better than others.

3. Take the staff's temperature to avoid burnout

Once a quarter, check in with your teams and determine what's working and what isn't. Keep the floor open to suggestions and allow individuals to share feedback and air any grievances. Reevaluate the model and be prepared to make any necessary adjustments.

With effective communication and trust, managers can create an environment that not only strengthens teams but allows all individuals to establish their ideal workday.

How to Feng Shui Your Home: A Room-by-Room Guide

Did you know: Your home's decor is intertwined with your mental and physical health.

It's true. Your home's layout and design can have a significant impact on your physical and emotional energy. If you're living in chaos and your home is unorganized and cluttered, you'll feel it, and it'll only add to your stress. This is why so many people implement the principles of feng shui into their homes.

Basically, everything in our universe is composed of two opposing yet interconnected forces: yin (feminine, or passive, energy) and yang (masculine, or active, energy). By balancing calmness and vibrancy via colors, lights and sounds, you can create balance in your home. Now, this is a super-simplified explanation of feng shui, but for those who are beginners at it, just remember: You have to have a harmony of both active and passive energies to make this work, and you must consider each room, as this can only work if the entire space of your home works together harmoniously.

The infographic below will show you how to feng shui each room of your home.

Number of Pregnant Women Addicted to Opioids Increases, CDC Reports

The opioid crisis has reached new — and dangerous — heights and, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a group of major concern is expectant mothers. In fact, an analysis, published on Aug. 10 in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, found that the number of women with opioid use disorder at labor and delivery has quadrupled from 1999 to 2014.

More: What Is Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, & How Can We Help Babies Affected?

CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield told CBS News these findings are alarming at best: "These findings illustrate the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic on families across the U.S., including on the very youngest. Untreated opioid use disorder during pregnancy can lead to heartbreaking results. Each case represents a mother, a child, and a family in need of continued treatment and support."

Of course, opioid addiction is problematic for anyone. According to The Recovery Village, this type of addiction can cause numerous physical and/or mental health concerns, and “if not controlled, [opioid] addiction can lead to death.” In fact, opioid overdoses accounted for over 42,000 deaths in 2016 according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. However, opioid use during pregnancy can cause a slew of other problems, including but not limited to preterm birth, stillbirth, birth defects, maternal death and neonatal abstinence syndrome, which is a group of conditions caused when a baby withdraws from drug exposure in the womb.

And, unfortunately, one infant is born every 15 minutes with withdrawal symptoms after being exposed to opioids in utero according to a study from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and published by Pediatrics journal earlier this year.

More: Pregnancy Nutritional Deficiencies to Watch Out For

Researchers analyzed data from women in 28 states, and while the national prevalence rate of opioid-use disorder grew by 0.39 cases per 1,000 each year, annual increases were lowest in California and Hawaii and were highest in Maine, New Mexico, Vermont and West Virginia.

Adele Offers Support for BFF Diagnosed With Postpartum Psychosis

Adele isn't super-active on social media, but on Monday, she logged onto Twitter to talk about postpartum psychosis, an illness that impacts thousands of new mothers every year

In her tweet, the singer praised one of those women, her close friend Laura Dockrill, for writing about her personal experience

"This is my best friend. We have been friends for more of our lives than we haven't," Adele wrote. "She had my beautiful godson 6 months ago and it was the biggest challenge of her life in more ways than one. She has written the most intimate, witty, heartbreaking and articulate piece about her experience of becoming a new mum and being diagnosed with postpartum psychosis."

Adele also urged all mothers to start a dialogue about their emotional and mental experiences. "Mamas talk about how you're feeling because in some cases it could save yours or someone else's life x."

Dockrill heeded that advice and didn't hold back in her blog post, offering a brutally honest look into what it's like to live with postpartum psychosis during what many say is supposed to be one of the happiest times you've ever experienced.

"It's not easy to admit that the worst time of your life was when your baby was born," Dockrill wrote. "Social media gives a very shiny exterior of life to be frank and it's not the full picture, so I wanted to unlock some doors and be honest- I've been somewhere I can't unsee and- in case there is anybody out there struggling – to open up a dialogue and say it's ok."

More: What to Know About Postpartum Depression & Anxiety

Though she said her "pregnancy was a dream," Dockrill added that her labor was one of the most traumatic experiences she's ever had, which "could be what triggered my illness."

"I was totally prepared to be unprepared and have no history of mental illness and yet this cruel and savage sickness completely and unexpectedly swallowed me smashed me and my family against the rocks."

In the weeks following her delivery, Dockrill wrote that she had suicidal thoughts and severe anxiety. At one point, she said she had even completely forgotten who she was. Despite all of this, she said she still felt compelled to act like everything was fine in public.

"I tried to hide my illness from my family and friends because I was so full with shame and guilt because there is a huge expectation on women to be perfect beautiful glowing mama queens that are all encompassing wonderbeasts that can manage anything," she wrote.

More: Symptoms of Postpartum Depression Can Show Up Much Later Than Moms Expect

Soon after, she was hospitalized and received the treatment and attention she needed. Because of that experience, Dockrill now wants other mothers experiencing postpartum depression or postpartum psychosis to know that there is nothing wrong with seeking help.

"You don't have to brave it alone," she wrote. "You don't have to act like a hero, you already are one."

Other celebrities, such as Adele and Chrissy Teigen, have been vocal about having postpartum depression following the births of their children.

"It frightened me...I was obsessed with my child," Adele told Vanity Fair in 2016. "I felt very inadequate; I felt like I'd made the worst decision of my life."

It's great to see such influential figures speaking out so we can hopefully destigmatize mental health issues and focus on providing new parents with resources and support.

Beyoncé Brings Her Kids to Vogue Photo Shoot, Wins Parenting

If you've been feeling off for the past few days (or weeks because, honestly, what is time?), you're not alone. Mercury, unfortunately, is still in retrograde through the end of the week. Thankfully, Beyoncé and her darling kids are here to help make today a little brighter for us all.

On Tuesday, Vogue shared stunning behind-the-scenes footage from its iconic cover-story photo shoot with Beyoncé for the magazine's prestigious September issue. Throughout the three-minute clip, which was directed by photographer Tyler Mitchell, fans get to see a more intimate side of Bey's family life as she plays with her three children: Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir.

Between costume changes, Bey lovingly dotes on her kids, giving them kisses on the head and smiling as she watches them play. At one point, Blue even takes over the shoot and can be heard saying, "I'm gonna zoom in for you guys, OK?" as she holds a camera.

This would hardly be the first time 6-year-old Blue Ivy has stolen the attention while her mom was working. Earlier this year, she made countless headlines for her hilarious reaction to seeing footage of her parents in bed shown during their joint "On The Run II" Tour. Previously, she famously shushed them at the 2018 Grammy Awards. If her younger siblings have a fraction of her tenacious spirit, Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z are in for a lot of trouble.

Aside from being cute, the footage from Beyoncé's September Vogue shoot seems to show her at her most vulnerable and happiest. She's both a mother and an artist, a global icon and someone who still craves those intimate, private moments with her children.

This attitude seems to have permeated much of Beyoncé's art and interviews lately. In her interview with Vogue, she shared how she felt about her changing postpartum body.

"To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts, and thighs are fuller," she said. "I have a little mommy pouch, and I'm in no rush to get rid of it. I think it's real," she said. "Whenever I'm ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast-zone and work my ass off until I have it. But right now, my little FUPA and I feel like we are meant to be... During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be... I was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves. My kids and husband did, too."

May we all channel Beyoncé's patience and understanding as we experience Mercury's final stretch in retrograde.

During Deadline's Emmy's For Your Consideration event on Tuesday, those in attendance were lucky enough to screen a sneak peek from the first episode of season three. The scene involved Jack and Rebecca and a big first for the two — their very first date.

According to the website, Jack and Rebecca go on an "awkward first date," but it also sounds like an extremely sweet one because, well, that's what happens when Jack Pearson is involved.

They go to a carnival and, as a Vietnam vet who just returned home, Jack doesn't have much money. He only has $9 to be exact. So rather than using his money to buy an umbrella (because, yes, it's raining) he chooses to spend his money on Rebecca. "You don’t bring a girl to a carnival and not let her play any games," he says to her in the scene, per Deadline. Of course, he ends up driving her home — in the pouring rain. Really, who cares about the umbrella when Jack delivers a romantic line like that, right?

Even Rebecca couldn't resist Jack and his genuine sweetness because, as Deadline reports, she ends up kissing him.

Fans have already seen a lot of firsts for Jack and Rebecca, including when they first met, as shown in this video.

17 Unexpected Yet Practical Ways to Use Tea Tree Oil

Even if you’re not well versed in the world of natural and essential oils, chances are you’ve read that tea tree oil is an all-in-one ingredient with the ability to fix almost anything. Above all, some swear by it as a fast-acting acne treatment — and as we know, blemishes big or small can be notoriously difficult to remove. Just dab some onto a cotton ball, swipe over your problem areas and voilà: clear skin.

But there are way more uses for tea tree oil than just treating acne-prone skin. According to the internet, it can also be used as a detergent, a gargle, a bug repellent… the list goes on! Scroll down to learn 17 unexpected, bizarre and super-practical uses you probably didn’t know existed.

1. To treat wounds

Tea tree oil is a super-effective treatment for healing open wounds because it’s antimicrobial — meaning it kills (or at least stops the growth of) bacteria and other potentially harmful microorganisms. TTO is also an anti-inflammatory, so it can soothe redness, swelling and pain. Before applying tea tree oil to an open wound, it’s recommended that you clean it out with some water and hydrogen peroxide.

2. To fight fungus

We know tea tree oil is often praised as a highly effective topical treatment for acne. But it can also be used as a topical treatment on your toenails to fight foot fungus. Tea tree oil is known to kill all kinds of yeast and fungi, so you can use it to prevent or treat conditions like athlete’s foot.

3. To soothe sunburns

If you’re hitting the beach this summer, it’s definitely in your best interest to slap on some sunscreen. However, if you still find yourself a little crispy at the end of the day, you can turn to tea tree oil to soothe your sunburn. Its anti-inflammatory qualities help to reduce redness, itching and burning. For this reason, it can be found in a variety of sunburn-soothing lotions.

4. As an all-purpose cleaner

If your home is in desperate need of some sparkle but you’re sick of using harsh chemicals around the house, tea tree oil might be your perfect solution. Combine 10 drops of tea tree oil with two cups of hot water and a half-cup of white vinegar for the perfect natural all-purpose cleaner. However, skip your granite and marble countertops, because vinegar can damage the finish.

5. To treat bad breath

Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland confirm that tea tree oil kills the bacteria colonies that cause bad breath. For an at-home solution, it’s recommended that you use a TTO-infused toothpaste, add a few drops to your regular toothpaste or gargle with a cleansing product that includes tea tree extract in order to achieve fresh breath.

6. To prevent or kill lice

According to Reader’s Digest, TTO contains two elements that combat lice. One is 1,8-cineole, a common natural insecticide, and the other is terpinen-4-ol, which is both antibacterial and antifungal. A study out of Italian research university D'Annunzio University suggests that 1 percent tea tree oil can eradicate 100 percent of head lice in half an hour.

7. As insect repellent

Tea tree oil contains another 1,8-cineole insecticide known as eucalyptol. Eucalyptol can be used to repel and/or kill many types of critters.

8. To eliminate foot odor

If you notice your feet starting to smell, you may have athlete’s foot or another fungal infection. Luckily, since TTO has antifungal properties, you can use it as a topical remedy to treat any fungal skin conditions. Treating fungus, in turn, can help to stop odorous feet.

9. To treat dandruff

A common cause of dandruff is the overgrowth of Malassezia, a fungus that lives on the scalp. Since tea tree oil is known to be antifungal, it can kill or prevent the growth of Malassezia, thereby curing dandruff.

10. To treat bug bites & stings

Due to TTO’s anti-inflammatory properties, it is extremely effective at reducing swelling, itching, burning and redness (all symptoms of insect bites). To treat your bug bite with tea tree oil, apply a few drops to a cotton ball, and press it onto the affected area so the oil can fully absorb into your skin. Applying a bandage afterward will ensure that the oil doesn’t evaporate, giving it the chance to do its job.

11. As air freshener

If the apartment is starting to smell funky but you aren’t into chemical sprays, we recommend going all-natural. Mixing tea tree oil, eucalyptus essential oil and lemon essential oil makes for a delicious-smelling combo that can be sprayed in every corner of your abode.

12. As a laundry detergent booster

We’ve already told you (a million times over) about TTO’s bacteria-fighting properties. Who knew they’d be so versatile? Another way they come in handy is by refreshing your musty-smelling laundry and giving your detergent a little extra cleaning boost. It’s basically a natural disinfectant for your clothes.

13. To fight mold & mildew on hard surfaces

Tea tree oil’s intense fungus-killing abilities make it the ultimate killer of mold and mildew. Combine it with water and spray it on affected areas before wiping it away to permanently eradicate the gross stuff from your hard surfaces.

14. To help your plants grow

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: tea tree oil is antifungal. Plus, it’s an all-natural insecticide. Do you know what that makes? Happy plants with a critter-free habitat to grow in.

More: 11 Tea Tree Oil Products for Treating Your Acne

15. As makeup remover

Tea tree oil is extremely effective at breaking down makeup, so it’s a perfect natural addition to your bedtime routine. Be super-careful around your eyes and mouth. After applying TTO to the skin, rinse off with some warm water and swipe on a toner.

16. To eliminate cold sores

Tea tree oil’s antibacterial properties definitely come in handy when tackling those pesky cold sores. But before applying it directly to the sore, dilute it with a carrier oil (such as coconut or olive oil) so you don’t damage your skin!

17. To fight hair loss

Sometimes, clogged hair follicles on the scalp can mean shedding… and lots of it. If you’re noticing significant hair loss, try applying tea tree oil to cleanse your scalp. It’ll likely unclog your follicles and kill any harmful fungus or bacteria that’s preventing the regeneration of your hairs.

10 Times Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi Were the Best Couple in Hollywood

When Ellen DeGeneres came out on the cover of Time Magazine in 1997, then again as the titular character on her ABC sitcom Ellen, she became the first openly lesbian actress to play an openly lesbian character on TV. It was groundbreaking, according to a 20-year retrospective in USA Today in 2017, and DeGeneres hasn't stopped making waves yet.

More: 10 Women Who Changed Hollywood History

For over a decade, she has also had a wave-making partner: her wife, Portia de Rossi. The couple will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on Aug. 16, and looking back on their relationship is a study in nostalgia and romance as much as a study in how Hollywood's attitude toward gay and lesbian performers has changed over the years.

We've compiled 10 of DeGeneres and de Rossi's best moments in honor of this huge milestone in their relationship. Get ready to laugh, cry and clutch your chest with glee, because these moments are pretty special.

1. When DeGeneres announced their engagement on her show

In 2008, the day after the California Supreme Court overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage, DeGeneres announced on her talk show, "So I would like to say, right now, for the first time, I am announcing: I am getting married." The audience — including de Rossi — exploded into cheers and applause, and the emotion in DeGeneres' voice and her expression is palpable.

2. DeGeneres' sweet wedding monologue

Just after their intimate wedding ceremony in August 2008, DeGeneres shared photos with her audience and talked about the day. Her signature humor is as present as ever, but her joy is also incredible.

3. The first time de Rossi was a guest on Ellen

Seven months after their wedding, on March 16, 2009, de Rossi went on DeGeneres' daytime talk show for the first time. After a genuinely funny moment in which DeGeneres proves to the audience that she is, in fact, taller than her wife (de Rossi's heels are apparently misleading), she goes onto treat de Rossi "like any other guest who just got married" and asks questions like, "Are you enjoying being married to me?" It's incredibly, incredibly sweet.

4. Their first TV interview as a married couple

"[I knew Ellen was the one] when I first laid eyes on her, but it took me three years to actually tell her how I felt about her because I was on Ally McBeal at the time and I was not living as an openly gay person," de Rossi told Oprah in a November 2009 interview, just over a year after her wedding to DeGeneres. "I was closeted and very, very afraid that if I talked about being gay, it would be the end of my career, so I wasn't about to date the most famous lesbian in the world."

Meanwhile, DeGeneres said, "I had given up," assuming that her feelings for de Rossi were unrequited.

5. When the Ellen audience asked de Rossi their burning questions

In a 2014 appearance on Ellen, de Rossi answered questions from fans, including "Do you and Ellen work out together?" (answer: yes!) and "How are you enjoying Twitter?" De Rossi said, "Oh, I love Twitter! Like, three weeks ago I joined Twitter, and the first week, I just had my head in my phone. I couldn't do anything other than be on Twitter." She also said that DeGeneres totally showed up her 32,000 followers after her first weekend on the site: "You said, 'Oh, that's great, honey! I have 32 million.'"

6. Their 2014 holiday letter

Following the tradition of annual holiday letters in which families brag about all of their accomplishments during the year, DeGeneres penned one that she shared on her show. "Luckily, Portia and I don't have any kids to tell you about, although, according to the tabloids, we've been pregnant 16 times alone this year," she quips at one point, then gives an update on their nieces and her mom.

7. When they talk about sneaking photos of each other

When audience members asked de Rossi about her Twitter usage in 2015, both she and DeGeneres commented that she's constantly sneaking pictures of her wife to share on the site — and DeGeneres likes to snap sneaky photos, too. Plus, the pet parenting talk in this interview is total goals.

8. The Not-So-Newlywed Game

So You Think You Can Dance alum Twitch hosted "The Not-So-Newlywed Game" on Ellen in 2015, just after DeGeneres and de Rossi celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary. They faced off against Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, who "have a few years" on their competitors; at the time, they said they'd been married for 10 years and together for "about 17."

However, de Rossi and DeGeneres totally smoked Falcone and McCarthy, whose answers are hilarious and "true," they admit, but don't match (which is the point of the game).

9. When de Rossi revealed her secret for a successful marriage

In a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, de Rossi said, "I think Ellen and I love [our relationship] the most. We're just really good friends and we talk about everything and we never, ever lie to each other." She added, "She's the only person I want to hang out with. She is my best friend. I just want to be with her all the time. She's just so awesome — who wouldn't want to be with Ellen all the time?"

10. When de Rossi gave DeGeneres a surprise 60th birthday gift

DeGeneres turned 60 on Jan. 26, and her talk show hosted a number of guests who wanted to wish her a happy birthday — including de Rossi, who brought a surprise birthday gift. Not only did she establish the Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund for DeGeneres to continue philanthropic work with animals, but she also created an initiative to set up a permanent home for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. DeGeneres has looked up to Fossey since seeing her on the cover of National Geographic in 1970.

When de Rossi ended her reveal, DeGeneres said, "When we got married, Portia's line was, 'It's good to be loved. It's profound to be understood.' And she understands me, because that is the best gift that anybody could have given me."
