The Next Generation of Country Singers You Should Listen To

$

Confession: We love a good, solid country song and a good, solid country artist to go with it. Sure, we love classic country artists like Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton and Thomas Rhett, but every once in a while, we get a hankerin' for something new. With tons of country artists rising through the ranks every year, we have plenty of great new acts to add to our catalog of must-listen musicians, but not all of them are worthy to be considered some of the best of the new crop. So, who has made the cut for the next generation of country music stars you should really be listening to?

More: A Roundup of Country Couples Who've Been Together Forever

Well, we love artists that sound like some of our favorites but are bringing their own musical twists to the country music genre. We love a powerful ballad as much as we love a hootenanny song. We want to be able to turn up these songs during a long drive or at our favorite dive bars. And luckily, all of the artists and their songs we handpicked below deliver on these wishes and so, so much more.

Keep reading below to see which rising country artists have earned our seal of approval and made the cut.

1. The Wild Reeds

Female trio The Wild Reeds will make you swoon for their mellow folk music, like their soft yet strong single, "Capable."

2. Trixie Mattel

Fans of RuPaul's Drag Race will recognize All Stars 3 winner Trixie Mattel, but she's just getting her bearing in the world of country, honey. Perhaps one of the only openly queer and riotously fun performers on the scene, Mattel brings a bluegrass vibe to her poppy country songs.

3. Rachel Wammack

Rachel Wammack is a powerful vocalist who has the stuff to rise to the top of the country charts — you'll agree once you hear her belt it out on the track "Damage."

4. Tenille Townes

On top of a truly grade-A name, Tenille Townes brings to the table lots of rootsy, rockin' country topped with melodic vocals that will remind you of Alison Krauss or Laura Marling.

5. Hayley Sabella

Hayley Sabella's mellow country-folk songs like "If I Reach" are delicate, tender creations that are perfect for when you want to chill out but still feel the country twang deep in your soul.

6. Kyle Daniel

Kyle Daniel's music, and especially his song "Hangover Town" is tailor-made for fans who love Blake Shelton or the husky jolt of Chris Stapleton's singing style.

7. Glorietta

Glorietta's "Heatstroke" is reminiscent of a down-home Lynyrd Skynyrd single like "Sweet Home Alabama" with the funk turned up to 11 and the refrain, "I got the heatstroke," making you want to headbang the night away (read: It's a damn good song from a damn good band).

8. Sunny War

Sunny War melds country, folk, pop, neo-soul and alternative genres into something wholly enticing. Her vibe is best seen on the track "If It Wasn't Broken," a dreamy, floaty song buoyed by her mellow vocals and a twanging guitar.

9. Andrew Leahey & the Homestead

Andrew Leahey & the Homestead are the quintessential country newcomers, with a full-on band and powerful vocals from frontman Leahey.

10. Jimmie Allen

The heir to Thomas Rhett's throne, which is built on crowd-pleasing anthems and a winning personality, has arrived in the form of newbie Jimmie Allen. One rotation of "Best Shot" will have you hooked on his work immediately.

11. Bishop Gunn

Bishop Gunn churns out the kind of bluesy country you'd expect deep from the heart of Memphis and thus makes them welcome up-and-comers to the country scene.

12. Liz Cooper & the Stampede

Liz Cooper & the Stampede's cheeky country-ish tune "Mountain Man" hints at just how playful this group can get — and why they're ones to watch in the country and folk scene.

13. Rising Appalachia

Rising Appalachia has been around for a few years but are just now breaking big with politically charged protest songs that recall Bob Dylan, except they're refreshingly feminist and honest in their slant. Take a listen to "Resilient" and see for yourself.

14. Tyler Dial

There's a lot to love about Tyler Dial, but it's the emotional honesty of his lyrics that recall Keith Urban that will make you want to press play on his song "Truth in the Way."

15. Carolina Story

Duo Carolina Story has the wistful drawl of Emmylou Harris with the powerful push and pull of The Civil Wars, which means you need to get on their wavelength ASAP.

16. Hannah Ellis

If you're a fan of Carrie Underwood or Maren Morris, then you need to keep tabs on the bright country stylings of Hannah Ellis.

17. Phil Cook

Phil Cook hails from chilly Wisconsin climes but his voice is Southern-fried all the way. Take one listen to his song "Miles Away" and you'll know that he's a major new country artist you need to be tuned into.

Ashley Iaconetti Sets the Record Straight on Those Cheating Rumors

Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon have been weathering a bit of a storm lately. Earlier this week, Iaconetti's ex, Kevin Wendt, came forward with allegations that Iaconetti had cheated on him during their brief relationship. Initially reticent at first to comment on Wendt's allegations, Iaconetti has recently gotten the courage to address what's really going on.

More: Ashley Iaconetti Already Has Big Plans for Life After the Wedding

Iaconetti chose The Ben & Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast as her venue of choice for discussing Wendt's allegations. As reported by People magazine, Iaconetti explained, "I was dating Kevin like out in the real world for two weeks [the pair met while filming The Bachelor: Winter Games] and Jared came out about his feelings and he kissed me in the airport."

As far as whether or not Iaconetti classified that as cheating? Well, let's just take a look at her words to see how she feels about it.

"And we had mentioned this before — I admitted before I was dating Kevin when Jared kissed me," she noted. "Whether you call that cheating that is up to you, by most definitions that is true. But, it was one of the moments of passion, one of those actions — he pulled me in, I kissed him back."

For what it's worth, Iaconetti also commented, "I never kissed him again until Kevin and I broke up after my birthday on March 6."

Wendt's cheating allegation was thrown out into the public arena during the premiere of Bachelor in Paradise on Monday, August 6. At the time, Wendt discussed on camera why, in his opinion, his relationship with Iaconetti didn't pan out the way he expected.

"When Ashley and I left Winter Games, I knew I wanted to marry her one day. “And then all of a sudden Jared flips the switch and now he wants to be with her. I did try to make it work, but if you kiss another guy while you’re dating someone else, that’s cheating in my book. That really hurt me," he said on the show.

More: Ashley Iaconetti Hasn't Said 'Yes' to a Dress... Yet

Hopefully, Iaconetti's statement puts this entire issue to bed. It doesn't seem like Wendt is keen on perpetuating things and Iaconetti seems entirely too focused on her engagement to Haibon to want to devote any more time to it.

5 Things Only Moms of Twins Will Understand

$

Being a parent of twins is like running a marathon you didn’t train for. Suddenly, two very cute, very small beings depend on you — at the same time. You may feel like nobody knows your struggle. But when you meet other twin parents, you form an instant connection because you recognize each other’s invisible battle scars.

As a twin mama, parenting two babies is simultaneously the best and the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve had to learn on the job, and sometimes, I fail miserably. Turning to other twin mamas for support and questions has made all the difference. This list is for my fellow twin mamas who have been, done that, times two.

Single stroller envy

Double strollers are enormous. It’s like driving a truck on a sidewalk. Whenever I see a sleek single stroller, I am instantly jealous. It looks so small! So easy to maneuver! It doesn’t take up your entire trunk, either. I find myself looking at single strollers and wanting to pet them. So pretty.

Matching clothes galore

Every adult twin I’ve ever met has told me, “Please don’t dress your kids in matching clothes forever.” Everyone gives you matching outfits, matching shoes, matching toys, matching bibs. They're cute in the beginning, but we stopped dressing our twins alike early on. With sleep deprivation, tiny very similar baby faces and a zombie-like mom brain, it’s too maddening to remember who’s who.

So many questions

Twin mamas know what I’m talking about. The moment you go into any public space — say, a playground or a grocery store — strangers instantly ask the same questions.

  1. Are they twins?
  2. Were they natural?
  3. Do twins run in your family?
  4. Who is the evil one?
  5. How do you do it?

I just want to carry a sign with my answers, so I don’t have to bother saying them yet again.

  1. No, I had these babies two years apart.
  2. They came out of my body.
  3. Nope.
  4. Depends on the day.
  5. I have no freaking clue!

Also, when you see me with two crying babies in a Costco shopping cart, please don’t ask me if they are twins. Just move out of my way.

Easy to go out with one baby

The first time I went out solo with just one baby to a doctor’s appointment, it felt like the easiest task in the world. My head wasn’t whipping around to keep an eye on two babies. I wasn’t struggling to lug two car seats that feel like they’re made out of Grand Canyon boulders into the pediatrician’s office. You tell yourself, “I can handle one baby with my eyes closed.” Then, without fail, you instantly miss your other child.

An instant bond with other twin parents or twins

Once you discover another parent of twins, it’s like finding a kindred spirit. You exchange war stories. Laugh about how every twin parent tells you it’ll get easier (and it does, somewhat). Once you’re a twin parent, you’re in a tribe with other twin parents. It’s like a secret handshake club, but your hands are always full.

Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck's Divorce May Get 'Dismissed'

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have been living separate lives for years now. In 2015, the couple announced they would be separating and, in 2017, Garner and Affleck filed a joint petition for divorce. However, since that time, neither has done anything to move forward.

In the eyes of the state — and on paper — the couple is still married.

That said, if the pair doesn’t act fast their marriage may last a little bit longer. According to a document obtained by The Blast, the LA County Superior Court has advised Affleck and Garner to enter a final judgement or face delays with their divorce.

“If you fail to take the appropriate steps in your case, the court may dismiss your case for delay in prosecution,” the document states.

Affleck and Garner tied the knot in 2005 and were married 10 years before parting ways, through Affleck did not move out of the family home until May 2017. While there is no word on what is causing the delays, chances of a reconciliation are slim as Affleck is currently dating Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus.

Garner has not publicly announced beiing romantically involved with anyone.

Of course, since announcing their divorce, the pair has been seen together quite regularly. They often go out together and vacation together and both Affleck and Garner remain committed to co-parenting their their three children: Violet, 12, and Seraphina, 9, and Samuel, 6.

“We are definitely a modern family,” Garner told Natalie Morales in a 2016 interview on Today. “It has to be [children first]. You have no choice. It has to be.”

That said, what will happen to their divorce (and marriage) remains unclear.

Ladies and gents, welcome to the ring: Aldi — the no-frills German discount grocery chain is stepping up its game to rival all you health-conscious grocery stores out there. (We're looking at you, Whole Foods.)

More: Aldi Groceries Will Soon Be Sold at Kohl's

Aldi has announced its undergoing a total overhaul to its stores, aiming to deliver even more fresh, healthy and must-have products. According to their press release, Aldi is increasing its fresh food selection by 40 percent with brand-spankin’-new items.

"The continued success of our store expansion and remodel initiatives has given us the opportunity to carefully select and introduce new products that satisfy our customers' increasing preferences for fresh items, including organic meats, salad bowls, sliced fruits and gourmet cheeses," Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi U.S., said in the release. "We know people lead busy lives, so we're making it even easier for them to purchase everything on their shopping list at ALDI, while still saving money."

What exactly can you expect as part of Aldi's expansion? They've broken it down into three categories: fresh and healthy items, convenient items and must-have items.

  • Fresh items include more ready-to-cook and organic fresh meats, an expanded produce selection (including veggie noodles!) and even more vegan and vegetarian options as part of its Earth Grown line (so if you haven't tried kale and quinoa crunch burgers, you'll soon have your chance).
  • Convenient items include grab-and-go and single-serve food and drinks (from kombucha to veggie snack packs) and more easy-to-prepare meal starters, including quinoa bowls and vegetarian options.
  • As far as must-have items are concerned, you'll find more baked goods and milk alternatives, like organic almond milk and lactose-free and soy milk.

"They are great examples of Aldi Finds products that were so popular they became part of our everyday selection," a PR representative told Food & Wine.

The store has already started to roll out these products and will continue to do so through early 2019.

In addition to new food items, Aldi is investing more than $5 billion to not only expand its store count to 2,500 by the end of 2022 (that's an increase of 700 stores, as Aldi currently has more than 1,800 stores across the U.S.), but it's also planning to remodel all of its grocery stores. As part of its remodeling investment, the stores will include additional refrigeration space to hold its increased offering of fresh, healthy products.

Looks like we'll be spending a lot more time in Aldi's fresh food aisles.

It’s Time to Call Bulls*** on One-Size-Fits-All Health Care

Has a doctor ever made you feel like you were overreacting? Blamed an ailment on something you were sure wasn’t the cause? Or have you witnessed a smirk, even side-eye, after revealing you found relief in a change of diet or nontraditional treatment? If so, you may want to heed the call of sex educator Dr. Logan Levkoff and say enough is enough.

“We need to call bullshit on systems that aren’t working for us. We want to be ladylike. We want to be polite. But sometimes we just need to say, ‘You know, that’s bullshit. That doesn’t work for my health or for my body, and I’m not going to go by your rules anymore,'” Levkoff said at the #BlogHer18 Creators Summit on Thursday, Aug. 9. She spoke on a panel hosted by SheKnows health and sex editor Elizabeth Yuko along with Keech Combe Shetty, CEO of Vagisil’s parent company Combe, and Bethany Edwards, cofounder of Lia, which is the first flushable pregnancy test

While Levkoff was hardly trying to incite categorical distrust in the medical profession, she was saying it’s OK to trust yourself and your body — to seek second, third and fourth opinions when the right treatment eludes you. Even the best doctors are limited to their experience, and each walks into the exam room with their own set of beliefs and biases. Most strive to be mindful of this, but not all do — or not all do it well every single day. And since doctors are authority figures, people have been groomed to defer to since birth, it makes it even harder to speak up.

It’s a problem Combe Shetty zoomed right in on. “[Women] are programed to listen to authority leaders. Not only authority leaders, but our families, our communities, our religions,” she said. “But think about where these concepts and where these rules originally came from. Is that still relevant to you today?”

To illustrate the point, Combe Shetty called out Serena Williams, who had to fight for the correct test after she developed blood clots in her lungs during a C-section. It's an ordeal Vogue detailed in a February profile of the tennis player:

“[After surgery] Serena suddenly felt short of breath. Because of her history of blood clots, and because she was off her daily anticoagulant regimen due to the recent surgery, she immediately assumed she was having another pulmonary embolism. (Serena lives in fear of blood clots.) She walked out of the hospital room so her mother wouldn’t worry and told the nearest nurse, between gasps, that she needed a CT scan with contrast and IV heparin (a blood thinner) right away. The nurse thought her pain medicine might be making her confused. But Serena insisted, and soon enough a doctor was performing an ultrasound of her legs. “I was like, a Doppler? I told you, I need a CT scan and a heparin drip,” she remembers telling the team. The ultrasound revealed nothing, so they sent her for the CT, and sure enough, several small blood clots had settled in her lungs. Minutes later she was on the drip.”

If a powerful woman like Williams could struggle to be taken seriously, anyone could, argued Combe Shetty. “You just have to keep asking questions,” she said. “Rules without reason are one of the most frustrating things. And you really have to start questioning why they exist.”

That’s a good reminder for us all.

How to Enjoy Sex (if You Don't Already)

$

There are a lot of challenges when it comes to enjoying physical intimacy. As a society, we place heavy emphasis on beauty standards that are almost unattainable for those with the wrong genetic makeup, and most of the shame we feel about our appearance has been cultivated in us by a marketing machine hell-bent on selling us creams, dresses, purses, makeup and breast implants.

Being unhappy with the way we look and present ourselves sells product, and advertisers know it. This means that we live in a pervasive culture that is always telling us that we’re not good enough, and that has an unavoidable effect in the bedroom. How many people reading this article have ever found themselves not in the mood because they felt uncomfortable in their own skin?

More horribly, many women have had physical intimacy ruined for them because of abuse or assault. In fact, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, 1 out of every 6 women has been victimized by rape. One happens every 98 seconds. It’s very difficult to move toward personal sexual health when we have had our sexuality devastated by forces beyond our control.

Heterosexual women also have to deal with another problem: Men have almost complete lack of awareness when it comes to how women’s bodies work. Sexual education in the United States is often limited to abstinence, anatomy, physiology and how to use protection.

Women’s bodies generally need specific kinds of stimulation to achieve orgasm as well as foreplay, a subject that many of our male partners could be much more well versed in. A study published in The Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy in 2017 found that only 18 percent of women said that vaginal penetration alone was enough to make them climax, so it’s obvious there’s a gap we need to close.

Start off solo

The first step to learning how to really enjoy sex is to learn how to enjoy sex… alone! It’s time to invest in a few toys and learn more about how your body works. Everyone likes something a little different, and being willing to experiment and learn your own body is a crucial first step to being able to communicate with your partner.

As a sex educator, my first toy recommendation would be a Hitachi Magic Wand or a similar toy that uses medical-grade silicone. Remember that you have to use water-based lube with these kinds of toys, as other types can cause them to break down. I also recommend purchasing a toy cleaner. It will keep your toys clean and stop concerns like UTIs and irritation.

While experimenting with your toys, learn the following about your body:

  • How do I like to be touched?
  • Where do I like to be touched?
  • How do I like to be kissed?
  • What kind of foreplay do I like?
  • What kind of pressure/intensity do I like when I’m being pleasured?
  • Do I like consistent stimulation, or do I want my partner mixing things up?
  • Do I like being penetrated when I’m being stimulated, or do I prefer external stimulation?
  • Do I have a favorite position I find myself thinking about or fixating on when I’m close?
  • Is there something my partner does that I really like and I haven’t told them I enjoy?
  • What kinds of situations do I find my mind dwelling on when I’m being intimate?
  • What is my mental process for achieving orgasm?

Add a partner

After this process of self-discovery, you’ll now be armed with information… information you can share with your partner! I’ve written about how to be more vocal in the bedroom, so if you’re intimidated by sharing this newfound inspiration, that's a good place to start.

More: How to Be More Vocal in the Bedroom Without Feeling Ridiculous

It’s also crucial to share what you're going through with your partner. Let them be involved and invested in your pleasure, and let them help and share in the process. Of course, it's OK to keep parts of this journey to yourself if you’re feeling insecure or unready to be vulnerable on this level. On the other hand, you should make being open and honest about where you are with regard to physical intimacy a priority in your relationships so you can enable your partner to take care of your needs and be supportive. Remember, your partner can’t be supportive if they don’t know you need support.

Seek expert help if needed

If you’ve been victimized by sexual assault and feel like your love life has been damaged, don’t be afraid to seek help. Mental health professionals have established ways of helping you recover from a terrible incident and can help you reclaim your sexuality. Don’t let yourself be afraid of getting the help you need. Investing time in overcoming your fears and insecurities will help you be a more complete person and face life’s challenges with new eyes and a better love life.

More: If Sex Doesn't Make You Orgasm, You're Not Alone, & Here's What Can Help

Your personal sexual journey of affirmation can be a rocky road, one that’s dangerous to walk alone. Make sure you don’t let embarrassment keep you from learning about and expressing the parts of yourself you most want to share with others.

Public Breastfeeding Is Now 'Protected' in All 50 States, but the Internet Is Skeptical

Though legislation may not stop critics from shaming nursing mothers, women can finally legally breastfeed in public in all 50 states. For years, both Utah and Idaho did not have laws in place to protect breastfeeding mothers who needed to feed their babies in public spaces, but new legislation in the two states means that breastfeeding is now protected by law across the country. However, despite the promising new laws, many people have taken to social media to express their doubts and concerns.

The bill passed in Utah first, stating that "a woman may breastfeed in any place of public accommodation… irrespective of whether the woman’s breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breastfeeding,” which aligns with the rest of the country. But the legislation wasn't exactly passed seamlessly. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Republican Rep. Curt Webb wasn't on board with the wording.

More: Why Beyoncé's Confession About Her C-Section Is So Important, Summarized in One Tweet

“This seems to say you don’t have to cover up at all,” Webb reportedly said. “I’m not comfortable with that; I’m just not. It’s really in your face.”

The bill has since cut the latter portion but still reads that women can legally breastfeed in any place of public accommodation. It passed with a vote of 68 – 5.

Idaho's legislation ran a bit smoother, with a unanimous vote in favor of the bill protecting breastfeeding mothers from indecent exposure and obscenity laws, according to the Idaho Statesman.

"Personally, I find it disappointing that we're in 2018 and we still haven't passed this law in Idaho," Rep. Paul Amador, a Republican, reportedly said prior to passing the bill. "I think we can take a proactive stance here through legislation to promote the natural bond and health benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child. I also believe the health and nutritional choices of our families are best left as decisions for our families, not our government."

Though these two laws are steps in the right direction, many have voiced their doubts and concerns on social media.

More: 3 Crucial Ways to Teach Your Daughter Not to Fear Failure

"Lobbyists from formula companies got the US to oppose a UN resolution voicing support for breastfeeding, so clearly there is vested financial/political interest to suppress it as much as possible," one Reddit user wrote on a now-viral thread on the topic in the subreddit TwoXChromosomes.

Public Breastfeeding 1

The Reddit user is referring to the United States’ recent opposition to a breastfeeding resolution that shocked world health officials in the spring. When hundreds of government delegates gathered in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly, they discussed a resolution intended to encourage breastfeeding. But the U.S. delegation upended deliberations, instead supporting infant formula manufacturers and arguing for the removal of language that calls on governments to “protect, promote and support breastfeeding.” The U.S. delegation also argued for the removal of another part of the resolution that calls on policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that are often warned to have damaging effects on children.

More: 7 Things You Should Never Say to a Woman Recovering From Childbirth

While breastfeeding in public space may be legal, then, some worry that nursing mothers will still be suppressed and discouraged.

Another user wrote on the subreddit thread that she didn’t realize breastfeeding in public wasn’t already legal across all states but that the news is good. However, she continued, "[To be fair], though, I don’t think it will have much of an effect on how many babies in the US are breastfed like the article is implying."

Public Breastfeeding

The World Health Organization reports that breastfeeding could prevent deaths — 823,000 infant deaths and 20,000 maternal deaths every year worldwide. But a recent UNICEF report also found that in high-income countries, more than 1 in 5 babies is never breastfed as opposed to in low- and middle-income countries, where 1 in 25 babies is never breastfed. In fact, among high-income countries, Ireland, France and the United States have the three lowest breastfeeding rates.

While the legislation means that numbers of breastfed babies may rise, women aren't convinced that the shaming of women who breastfeed in public won't stop. And, so long as society continues to shame women, some mothers will inevitably feel less inclined to breastfeed in public.

"It's still not gonna stop the millions of grown-up babies from whining about it whenever they see it, though," another Reddit user added to the thread, reaffirming concerns over continued mom-shaming.

Public Breastfeeding

A Twitter user also brought up another point — women's bodies are so hypersexualized that society may never be able to acknowledge the fact that breasts were biologically designed for breastfeeding. Even girls' bodies are hypersexualized. The Twitter user points out that teenagers can't even show their shoulders in high school.

The new legislation is a step forward for nursing mothers, who now have the law to protect them. But it will certainly still take time — and concerted efforts to unlearn much of what we've been told about women's bodies — for the laws to be socialized.

CVS Recalls 16,000 Over-the-Counter Nasal Spray

It may not be glamorous, but nasal spray is a useful health staple. It helps to ease congestion, calm an itchy or runny nose and curb those constant embarrassing sneezes. But if you're using an over-the-counter nasal spray, it's time to check your medicine cabinet, because on Friday, Product Quest Manufacturing recalled one lot of CVS Health 12 Hour Sinus Relief nasal mist due to microbiological contamination.

According to the recall, published by the Food and Drug Administration, repeated exposure to the contaminant (known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa) can cause an infection that can ultimately lead to death.

More: Are Your Cold Symptoms Actually Just Allergies?

"Repetitive use of a nasal spray containing a gram-negative pathogen can potentially lead to colonization and subsequent infection which can be life threatening in certain patient populations, such as those with cystic fibrosis or [those who are] immuno-compromised," — though to date no such incidents have been connected to the product.

The over-the-counter spray, which was sold at many of CVS's nearly 10,000 locations, comes in a 0.5-fluid-ounce white bottle with an orange label. The box is also orange, and while 16,896 units were recalled, affected products will be stamped with the UPC code 50428432365.

The lot number 173089J will also appear on the packaging, with an expiration date of Sept. 19.

Product Quest is making every effort to notify its customers of the recall — through both oral and written communication — and warns consumers that, if they have any of the affected product, they should stop using it immediately and return it to its place of purchase and/or discard it.

If you have additional questions about the recall, you can contact Product Quest Manufacturing at 386-239-8787, as they have staff on hand Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. You should also immediately call your doctor if you experience any problems that could be related to a contaminated spray.

Play it safe out there, nasal spray users!

Advocacy Group Finds Asbestos in Playskool Crayons

When parents think of hidden dangers in their home, they rarely (if ever) consider... crayons?! But a consumer interest group — the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund — is warning parents to do just that. The group recently discovered that some green crayons packaged and sold under the name Playskool Crayons contained tremolite, a type of asbestos.

“The good news is that when we were testing [school supplies] three years ago, all sorts of brands came back with asbestos. Now it’s just this one,” U.S. PIRG explained to CBS News. However, this information isn’t reassuring to parents who may already have these products in their homes.

Hasbro, who owns Playskool Crayons, is taking the report very seriously.

“Product and children’s safety are top priorities for Hasbro. We are conducting a thorough investigation into these claims, including working with Leap Year, the licensee of the product,” Hasbro’s Julie Duffy, senior vice president of global communications, said in a statement to People

A spokesman for Leap Year stated, “[C]onsumer safety is most important to Leap Year” and noted that the company “take[s] these matters very seriously." However, the company also pointed out that the crayons in question had passed internal reviews.

When Playskool Crayons were lab tested, they “passed all regulatory requirements and had no detectable asbestos."

And a spokesman for Dollar Tree — where the tested product was sold — told People that in order to be on their stores shelves the products underwent secondary (and similar) testing.

“The safety of our customers and associates is our top priority," the Dollar Tree rep said. "Our Company utilizes a very stringent and independent testing program to ensure our supplier products meet or exceed all safety and legal standards. We are aware of the report and have since re-verified that each of the listed products successfully passed inspection and testing.”

Playskool Crayons are sold through multiple retailers, including Amazon, eBay and Dollar Tree.

While U.S. PIRG has requested a recall of the crayons, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has not yet issued one.

That was the question posed to Jessica Alba as she tirelessly pitched the idea for what’s now a billion-dollar empire. “I had a lot of people telling me for, like, three years that I was cuckoo bananas,” said the 37-year-old actor while discussing her entrepreneurial journey at the #BlogHer18 Creators Summit in New York on Thursday, Aug 9.

It’s been over 11 years since Alba launched Honest Beauty, yet her hunger for turning passion and purpose into profit remains. As most of us know, Alba didn’t grow up dreaming of selling personal care products. Instead, we watched her climb the Hollywood ladder and make a name for herself in a slew of films (Sin City, Honey) and the TV show Dark Angel.

But after suffering an allergic reaction from laundry detergent during her first pregnancy, the beauty boss quickly realized the only way to get what she wanted — safe yet stylish products — was to create them herself. Reflecting on her quest to fulfill the basic needs of her family without jeopardizing their health, Alba says that most of what she discovered in “alternative” stores was crazy-expensive, hard to sort through and fell into three color categories: cream, beige or hemp.

More: How Gabrielle Union Reacted to a Headline Calling Her "Old & Ugly"

Worse, the ingredients in the products Alba saw were dangerous compared to what was used by brands sold outside the U.S. For instance, around the time she started to develop Honest Beauty, “there were about 11 chemicals that were banned in personal care in the United States, while there were over 1,100 banned in Europe.”

So she did something about it. And contrary to what the uninformed might imagine, those beginnings were very humble to say the least. Writing fancy business plans and crunching numbers were never Alba’s forte, so instead, she started the only way she knew how: by getting it all down on paper. What started as a simple desire in her head turned into countless inspiration collages (think Pinterest, but IRL) piled into binders upon binders.

How Jessica Alba to Started Honest Beauty

From there, and with the encouragement of her hubby, 39-year-old film producer Cash Warren, Alba researched to find a partner who would be able to take her ideas and turn them into a business plan worthy of execution and also help fill any gaps in her own experience and skill set. Alba then took her mission a step further by expanding into policy and making regular trips to Capitol Hill, where she lobbies for chemical reform.

While we could wax poetic about all that Honest Beauty has accomplished in store aisles, what Alba is proudest of is creating a community that values transparency as well as the well-being of women. For example, one of the standout benefits of working at Honest Beauty is a generous maternity leave that affords women 16 weeks of paid time off and men eight.

“And as they ease back into work, maybe it doesn’t start full-time. Maybe it’s three days a week until they get their childcare together or they feel more comfortable. We work with them on that,” said Alba. “I also built a really beautiful nursing space in our office with pumps and refrigerators and couches. So they can do it all with dignity. [Breastfeeding] is something that should be celebrated, not shameful.”

She went on to talk about her own experience transitioning into motherhood. “I felt so alone when I was pregnant with my first daughter. I was 27; it wasn’t planned and it happened,” she said. “It was the best thing that happened, but I was very overwhelmed. I feel that having a community, especially around that time in your life, is important.”

Above all, running a business from the ground up has taught Alba how important it is not only to do the work but do it in a way that inspires others to take that first step — however big or small it may be.

“I didn’t realize until about three years ago how important it is for women to see someone like me. My parents were teenagers when they got pregnant. They had three jobs each my whole life,” said Alba. “But I had the capacity to dream and think that I could eventually be a leading lady and that people like me would want to be represented on the big screen. Listen, I didn’t have agencies lining up to work with me — I had everyone telling me no way. I just pushed through and I made it happen. And I think that representation now as a business leader is just as important.”

Well, if that’s not damn inspiring, we don’t know what is. Alba’s living proof that no matter what your goal is, remember four important things: remain patient, stay humble, know what you’re good at and what you’re bad at too. It’ll make or break your next big idea.

Kylie Jenner has a lot to be thankful for on her 21st birthday. Over the past few years, she's elevated her lip kit brand to a booming $900 million empire. With that money, she's purchased mansions, ridiculously expensive luxury cars and every bag you could ever dream of pairing with your Alexander Wang long johns. But her "most special gift" of all is her 7-month-old daughter, Stormi Webster.

To celebrate her birthday, Jenner posted two darling mother-daughter pictures in which she cradles her baby girl while wearing a simple spaghetti-strap slip and natural makeup.

"Bringing in my birthday tonight with my most special gift," Jenner captioned one photo. "What was life before you, Stormi. I love you my little angel."

She captioned the other photo, "my heart."

The pictures were a welcome surprise for many fans, who had grown used to seeing only the back of Stormi's head after Jenner deleted all photos showing her daughter's face back in June. At the time, she explained to fans that she had decided was "not sharing photos of my girl right now."

Shortly after posting the photos, Jenner totally transformed herself to ring in her 21st year in style. The almost-billionaire invited her closest friends and family out for a night in Los Angeles, where she dined, danced, played in a ball pit and posed for countless photos in not one, but two larger-than-life all-pink outfits. Her sisters dressed the part too.

The celebration even brought Jenner's parents, Kris and Caitlyn Jenner together. Kim Kardashian West shared her excitement that "the gang's all here" in an Instagram Story in which she captured a quick peek at Caitlyn's colorful, bedazzled outfit.

Lauren Conrad Confirms Her Son Is a Tiny Drunk Adult

A few years back, at the height of listicle culture, a handful of outlets put together pieces with titles like, "Babies Act Just Like Drunk Adults." The evidence they provided was compelling: Babies are sloppy eaters who often use their hands; babies babble incoherently; babies really struggle with their balance. Now, Lauren Conrad is revitalizing the meme-heavy conversation by commenting on 13-month-old son Liam's coordination blunders.

"He is walking. He gets into everything, and he started walking around a lot," LC told People. "He started really [walking] a month and a half ago."

More: Lauren Conrad on Mom-Shaming

Conrad went on to explain that the walking isn't what worries her most; Liam desires to pick up the pace, and that leaves her simultaneously laughing and on edge.

"Now, he is running, which is scary because they're like little, drunk men," she said. "They're just constantly falling over, and you're like, 'Oh, my God!'"

Put the milk down, kid. You're drunk.

Keeping with the my-baby-is-an-old-man theme, Conrad shared that she loves dressing Liam up in adult-inspired clothes.

"I get to dress him up all day long. It's so fun," she said. "I've always wanted a boy, so I was really excited. But all my friends were like, 'Oh, but the girl clothes!' But I really love dressing him ... You dress them like tiny men."

Conrad, who recently released a line of denim for Kohl's, certainly has a knack for fashion, and it's clear she's passing her sense of style along to her son. While she was initially skeptical about posting photos of Liam on Instagram because she wanted to keep some moments private, Conrad has recently become more open to the idea. Over the past few months, she's shared pictures of Liam walking on the beach (wearing the cutest sweater, BTW), digging into his first birthday cake and trying on mom's accessories

It's sweet she's cherishing his big milestones. Before she knows it, Liam will be trying his hand — erm, more like his feet — at bicycle riding. Oh, the adventures that lie ahead.

8 Health Checks Everyone Should Get Before Starting College

You know what time it is: back-to-school! And for many students (and their parents), the countdown has begun for the official transition into their new lives as college kids. Amid the countless Target runs and existential crises that are likely to ensue in the following weeks, it is essential to make these health appointments for your college-bound kid before they depart.

Precollege physical

Dr. Richard Brookman, a pediatrics and adolescent medicine specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, explains that “a comprehensive review” of the student’s well-being is necessary to ensure a smooth transition into college.

In addition to discussing any chronic illnesses or health problems, “we review their diet and physical activity; any use of tobacco, alcohol or substances; any jobs or other activities that they're involved in; how they're getting along with their family, friends or partners,” Brookman tells SheKnows.

He explains that this is also the time to discuss any medications a student is on and make sure they have enough for the semester. If a student is sexually active, this appointment can serve as a safe space to discuss sexual health and disease prevention and to ask about getting or refilling a birth control prescription.

This physical will also ensure that a student’s immunization record is updated, something most colleges require. Dr. Terez Yonan, an adolescent medicine specialist from the Children’s Hospital Orange County in California, encourages students to get vaccines that aren’t required, including the HPV vaccination (commonly known as Gardasil) and a new vaccination for meningitis type B.

Dermatology visit

Feeling good in your skin is key to stepping onto campus with confidence. If your college-bound kid is experiencing skin conditions like acne, eczema, dandruff or rashes, make an appointment with a dermatologist to have their skin examined and to make a plan for treatment while they’re away.

(While you’re at it, don’t forget to ask your derm about the signs of bed bugs and how to prevent them!)

Vision & hearing screenings

Don’t wait until your kid sits down in their first lecture for them to realize they can’t see what the professor has scribbled on the board.

“You can get a vision and hearing screen when you come over for a precollege physical,” Yonan tells SheKnows. “If there are any abnormalities, your primary care doctor can recommend that you see an optometrist or a hearing specialist.”

And if your kid already wears glasses or contacts, make sure they have the correct prescription as well as a stockpile of backup lenses.

Dental checkup

Who doesn’t want to show up on campus with pearly whites? Scheduling one last dentist appoint allows college-bound students to get any pesky cavities filled or, if necessary, to get their wisdom teeth removed.

This is also an opportunity to speak with the dentist about any retainers or orthodontic treatments they may be receiving along with the options if they experience a dental emergency while at college.

More: 10 Gifts College Students Will Love (& Will Actually Improve Their Lives)

STI test

All individuals who are sexually active should be tested for STIs at least once a year, even if they aren’t experiencing symptoms, Brookman explains. This appointment can also serve as a safe space to discuss sexual health and disease prevention.

“It's a good thing to know their status before they go away, and that would include at least one HIV test,” Brookman says. “If something is positive, then we can treat it before they go away to school.”

More: Extreme Social Media Makeover for College Students

Gynecologist appointment

Speaking with an OB-GYN is wise, especially if your kid is sexually active (or planning to become active), has uncomfortable symptoms or has concerns about their menstrual cycle.

While Pap smears are not required until the age of 21 for generally healthy individuals, Yonan points out that college-age people with a history of autoimmune disease — such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or HIV — should receive Pap smears sooner than the general population.

Mental health screening

The transition to college can at times be an emotionally overwhelming experience. If your kid has been feeling anxious or depressed or you notice signs of attention difficulties, don’t wait until they're already at college to deal with it.

“If someone feels like their problems or symptoms are severe enough with their daily living ability, that's something to bring up with your provider,” Yonan says. “They can give you referrals for therapy but also discuss whether medication would or would not be helpful for your specific kind of symptoms.”

Or if they’re already on an antidepressant or another form of medication, it is important to make sure they have enough refills to get through the semester.

A wrap-up therapy appointment

If a student has already been seeing a mental health professional, Brookman advises they should keep going until the point that they go to college and then develop some kind of a plan with their psychologist for what's going to happen when they are away.

This plan often involves setting up weekly phone or video chat therapy sessions with their current provider or finding a new in-network mental health care provider on or near the campus.

Lisa Marie Presley Talks About Her Journey to Recover From Drug Addiction

While some people struggle with drug addiction their entire lives, it essentially snuck up on Lisa Marie Presley. During a Today show interview that aired on Friday, the daughter of the King revealed that her battle with drug addiction began at 45.

Now 50, Presley found her way to the other side — but she’ll be the first to tell you it wasn’t easy. “I’ve come a long way. I was not happy. The struggle in addiction, for me, started at 45 years old. It wasn’t like it was all my life.”

To get clean and stay clean, Presley sought help, saying, “I am proud. I really did come a long way. I have a therapist and she’s like, ‘You’re a miracle. You really are.’ She’s like, ‘I don’t know how you’re still alive.’”

In the years following the shocking death of Presley’s legendary father, Elvis, details of the late musician’s life revealed a prolonged pattern of prescription drug abuse. In his memoir My Brother Elvis: The Final Years, Elvis’ stepbrother David E. Stanley wrote, “Beyond all the fame, fortune and hype, Elvis was a simple man who loved the Lord, his family and his fans. A man who was haunted by demons and insecurities that plague us all, and eventually lost the battle of addiction, as too many often do.”

As for Presley, she’s determined not to fall victim to such a fate. Although she admitted to Today’s Jenna Bush Hager that she’s “not perfect,” she also noted that the most important part of recovery is “what you do with it after you learn” from your mistakes.

“And then you try to help others with it,” Presley said, perhaps hinting at why she was willing to be so open and vulnerable with her addiction story.

But suffice it to say that — even though he couldn’t escape his demons — the King still played an integral part in helping Presley beat hers.

Speaking about her new tribute album to her dad, Where No One Stands Alone, Presley explained that the music (and the memories of her father rooted in that music) helped bring her back from the brink. “This particular record and this song absolutely does [bring memories back] for me and brings me closer [to him],” she said. “It sort of grounded me in the middle of the never-ending tidal wave. It kind of came down and grabbed me, really.”

Let the countdown to release day commence! Justin Timberlake just dropped new details about his upcoming book, Hindsight: & All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me — and they’ll make you want to get your hands on the memoir even more.

More: Justin Timberlake Defends Pink & Makes a Really Important Point in the Process

First up? The cover. Timberlake revealed the front of the book to People, and it features the singer-songwriter’s face against a white background. This seems to align with his description of the book as an “intimate collection of images” and anecdotes offering a glimpse into his past and present and how they shape his music.

“Working on this book was an amazing process for me,” Timberlake told People via press release. “My story has been filled with so many amazing people that have helped me become the artist I am today. Reflecting on those moments, spotlighting my music and getting the opportunity to share my story is something I am very grateful for.”

The progression of the book follows Timberlake’s life growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, and on to the start of NSYNC. From there, you see the singer’s meteoric rise following the release of “SexyBack,” his first No. 1 single.

More: Justin Timberlake Always Does This for Jessica Biel

Timberlake teased readers on Instagram with a taste of what is to come, posting a throwback photo of himself as a child in Tennessee holding a toy guitar. “When I think of Memphis, I think of the people and the food and the heat and humidity. But mostly, I think about the music. It was the backdrop for all the sights and sounds around me as a child. I rarely post old pictures or old stories, so I’m really excited to share some with you guys in my new book. More coming...” he wrote.

Per People, the book — which is co-written by Sandra Bark — relies just as heavily on visuals as it does on stories to paint a portrait of JT’s creative process. To that end, the memoir was designed by Michael Bierut.

If you’re a fan of Timberlake both musically and as a human being (and, really, who isn’t?), you’ll find intel on his home life, too. Hindsight includes “touching tributes” to his wife, Jessica Biel, and the couple’s 3-year-old son, Silas. In fact, Timberlake discusses in the book how Silas’ birth “profoundly changed and humbled him” and that being the little boy’s dad forces him to “think differently about his art and his place in the world.”

Hindsight will be released on Oct. 30.

Yes, You Still Need Sun Protection on Cloudy Days

$

If you’ve ever looked up at a cloudy sky and decided to skip out on your daily sunscreen application (which, let’s be honest, most of us are guilty of doing), there’s something you should know: It’s just as important to lather your skin with something with SPF when it’s overcast as it is when it’s bright and sunny.

Why clouds don't protect you from the sun

“Clouds give us a false sense of security and lead us to underestimate how much radiation from the sun we are getting,” Dr. David Lortscher, board-certified dermatologist and CEO and founder of Curology, tells SheKnows. “We tend to stay outside longer on cloudy days thinking we aren’t getting much sun — so overexposure to sun can happen without our being aware of it, resulting in tanning, which is a sign of sun damage and/or burning.”

While we all have some sense that UV rays plus skin equals bad news, it’s important to understand what that actually means.

More: Annoying Summer Body Issues & How to Fix Them

“People relate sunburns and sun damage to heat and sunlight, but UV is invisible,” DC-based dermatologist Dr. Lily Talakoub of McLean Dermatology and Skincare Center tells SheKnows. She explains that you can't see UV rays in the form of light or feel it in the form of heat but you should know that any time of the day there's daylight, UV rays are there too. And so even if it's cloudy or rainy, the UV rays can go right through the clouds as well as glass windows because it's technically not light, but a form of radiation, she notes.

Both UVA and UVB rays — which are differentiated by their wavelengths — can cause skin aging and skin cancers and are each fully capable of penetrating the clouds on an overcast afternoon, Talakoub explains. The same principles also apply during the winter, which is why even when you're freezing to the bone in the middle of February, you should still be regularly applying sunscreen.

While clouds do provide some sun protection, you’re still better off playing it safe. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, clear skies allow virtually 100 percent of UV to pass through, scattered clouds transmit 89 percent, broken clouds transmit 73 percent, and overcast skies transmit 31 percent, which means that no matter how overcast it is, your skin is never totally safe.

How to protect yourself in all weather

To protect yourself properly, Lortscher suggests lathering on a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 before you head outside. Some of his facial favorites include Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 60+, CeraVe AM SPF 30 and Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30.

More: Don't Forget to Put Sunscreen on These Body Parts

Equally as important as lathering up before you leave home, though, is continuously reapplying regularly throughout the day — you may think it’s unnecessary, but it’s critically important to remain covered, especially if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside.

"Unprotected exposure to UV radiation is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer,” Lortscher says. "Cumulative exposure adds up over the days, weeks, months and years of our lives. Do what you can when you can to minimize your lifetime UV exposure — every hour counts, even on cloudy days.”

Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos Are Peak Proud Parents Over Son's Riverdale Role

Move over, Mom and Dad! There’s a new star in Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ house. On Saturday, the famous couple took to Instagram to express their pride over son Michael’s new role on the hit CW series Riverdale. And, hey, Michael is following in his father’s footsteps in more ways than one — the 21-year-old will be playing the younger version of Consuelos’ own character, Hiram Lodge.

More: Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos Are Working on a Completely New Show Together

“Congrats Michael on being cast as young Hiram Lodge on @thecwriverdale,” Ripa wrote, as any proud parent would. But she couldn’t resist landing a playful jab, too. “However @instasuelos and I would like to take this opportunity to remind you and your siblings that as your fiduciaries we are hereby entitled to 10% of all future earnings hereto wit, or something like that.”

Ha! Classic parental behavior, right?

Consuelos got more sentimental on his Instagram feed, sharing a sweet snapshot of himself and Michael. “Bucket list moment for Mom and Dad. Congrats to my son Michael on being cast as the younger (and much better and handsomer) Hiram.. We are so proud. Love you MJC #riverdale #bucketlist,” the actor posted.

Warner Bros. Television confirmed Michael’s casting on Friday in response to a larger announcement during Comic-Con last month that season three would feature a flashback episode called “Midnight Club.” It will focus on the Riverdale parents during their younger — and apparently quite shady — years.

That episode, according to Teen Vogue, will also see KJ Apa (Archie), Lili Reinhart (Betty), Camila Mendes (Veronica) and Cole Sprouse (Jughead) step into the shoes of their on-screen parents.

More: Kelly Ripa's Vacation Pics Prove Her Sons Are Men Now

“Obviously, Riverdale [is a] much darker version of [The Breakfast Club],” show creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said at a Television Critics Association panel last week. “We’re going to learn about a really, really dark secret in Riverdale that the parents have been keeping since they were in high school.”

Intrigued? Us too.

The fact that so many of Riverdale’s adults were huge teen stars in their real-life younger years plays a major part in imbuing the so-called YA series with mass appeal. Aguirre-Sacasa clearly doesn’t take this for granted, hinting during the TCA panel that he’s considering giving the adult characters even more room to grow.

More: Kelly Ripa Claps Back at Haters Criticizing Her Family

“We’d love to do a bizarre episode where we follow most of the parents, and the kids are just on the fringes. In season three, we’re in a place where we can do that,” he said. “I think it’d be a blast.”

So, while Michael’s role on Riverdale is just a guest spot for now, it could very well turn into a recurring role in the future. The more the series delves into the backstories of its adult characters, the more likely they’ll be revisiting those characters’ pasts — and that makes more Michael cameos possible.

Idris Elba’s Response to New James Bond Rumors Has Fans Shaken and Stirred

In what may go down in Hollywood history as the most persistent casting rumors ever, new reports over the weekend suggested (once again) that Idris Elba was poised to play James Bond on the big screen. And, for a brief, shining moment early Sunday morning, a tweet from Elba made fans believe that 007 dreams could actually come true.

More: 15 Surprising Things You Didn’t Know About Idris Elba

Elba's cryptic tweet was simply, “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba.”

And, not surprisingly, fans were officially shook. Or, as it were, “shaken.”

However, a subsequent tweet from Elba had fans — shall we say? — stirred. “Don’t believe the HYPE...” he wrote, which could suggest that we will not be seeing him fill out those Bond suits anytime soon (or possibly ever).

Many fans refused to accept such a grim prediction, though. Some pointed out that it’s about time the world got some good news for a change.

Others did what any good fandom would do and theorized the hell out of Elba’s tweet.

One fan may have cracked this whole thing wide open, though. Moments before posting his “HYPE” tweet, Elba shared a seemingly random photo of hip-hop group Public Enemy. Given that context, one fan came up with an admittedly compelling theory.

Since we’re just as thirsty to see Elba as Bond as the next fan, we’re inclined to buy into this theory 100 percent. Alas, Elba may just be having fun creating an air of mystery — which, c’mon, is just one more reason he’d make a perfect Bond.

More: Idris Elba Proposed to His Girlfriend in Such a Hollywood Way

But the latest rumor pegging Elba for the role came from a Daily Star report that claimed director Antoine Fuqua spoke with friend and producer Barbara Broccoli about the Bond franchise. In that conversation, Elba was reportedly referenced as their ideal Bond.

However, Fuqua’s rep denies any such conversation. “He never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or the casting. It’s all made-up stuff. Not sure how it got started,” the rep told The Hollywood Reporter

Additionally, a source close to Elba’s team reportedly told THR that no one in his camp is aware of such a casting.
