This Is Us Has Big Plans for Miguel in Season 3

This Is Us fans have been hot and cold with Miguel since the show first premiered, and we get that. It's not easy to throw your support behind the character who is not only playing a stepdad, but playing the stepdad who happened to be the former best friend of Jack Pearson — maybe the greatest TV dad in recent memory. But in season three of This Is Us, fans who have opposed Miguel's marriage to Rebecca Pearson might change their tune with the character developments series creator Dan Fogelman has in store.

More: This Is Us Season 3 Is Bringing Jack Back in an Important Way

Speaking to Deadline last Thursday, Fogelman teased a time jump into the past to more fully explore Jack's service in Vietnam. He also said, “We’re going to dive deeper into that this season and begin this long play of making people actually start rooting for Miguel in a serious way, which I think will be really exciting when we pull it off.”

Fogelman certainly sounds confident about the shift in attitude. A more sympathetic storyline for Miguel could go a long way toward getting fans to root for him without forgetting their love for Jack Pearson — whose death is still fresh in fans' minds after the cause was finally revealed in season two. So, how are Fogelman and co. going to pull this off?

“When we’re picking up that particular storyline, [with] the teenage kids, we’re picking it up pretty immediately a couple of months after their father’s death," he told Deadline. "You’re seeing the beginning of a storyline where Miguel starts trying to help this family along, this character who has always been polarizing. I think last season, people actually started to love him, and then started to hate themselves for loving him. But then, they gradually figured out that this guy really has done nothing untoward and is a guy trying to do the right thing.”

More: The First This Is Us Season 3 Picture Is Here, & It's All About Randall & Beth

Hmm. That doesn't really answer our questions, but Fogelman is a master of teasing and misdirecting fans so the emotional payoffs are as intense as possible. This Is Us season three is sure to be an incredible run of the show, especially with all those planned time jumps to the past and future. We're still not sure how the new direction for Miguel will pan out, but we remain hopeful if Fogelman is the man engineering it.

Nathan Fillion Made a Video That His Fans Have Been Begging For

On the eve of San Diego Comic Con, the largest comic book convention in the world, Nathan Fillion has taken matters into his own hands and created a 14-minute unauthorized Uncharted film starring himself as the game's main character, Nathan Drake. It's a role his fans have been begging him to play since the game was first released in 2007, and 11 years later, Fillion is giving the people what they want.

More: Nathan Fillion's Making His TV Return With a New Cop Show

The last we heard any official news of the Uncharted film produced by Spider-Man's Avi Arad, who also owns the movie rights to video game franchises Mass Effect and Metal Gear Solid, it was 2013, and the news was basically "it's coming!" As Variety reports, that film has basically been stuck in development for years, and a search for the film on IMDb reveals a page with no mention of Arad and Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland has signed on to play Nathan Drake.

Meanwhile, Fillion has been vocal about wanting to play the character since the first movie buzz started. His fans noticed their physical similarities from the get-go, and the Indiana Jones-meets-Tomb Raider vibe of Uncharted frankly seems like an awesome fit for Fillion, who's most well known for his starring roles in Firefly (and its accompanying movie conclusion, Serenity) and Castle.

This time of year, teasers for major SDCC announcements are common. On July 11 and 12, Fillion shared a photo of rapper Drake on his Instagram with the caption "Sic Parvis Magna" (roughly translates to "from small things, great things come"), followed by a photo of a map and journal captioned with just a date: "7/16/18." The Drake photo is clever for two reasons: one, because it relies on fans' knowledge of Uncharted to draw the connection between the rapper, Drake, and the Latin phrase in the caption, which is a big part of the video game. The map photo is also clever because it doesn't reveal much, but it does confirm what fans may have suspected from the first photo. Well played, Fillion.

Outlets that cover geek culture ran with the teasers. ComicBook, Digital Spy and IGN were among those that reported on the potential announcement, with each of them filling in details of the allegedly in-development film's slow progress toward production.

Then, when July 16 came, Fillion released his unauthorized "fan video." Variety notes that the film is similar to Adi Shankar’s 2015 “bootleg” Power Rangers short. Sometimes, it's necessary to take matters into your own hands — and the hands of your talented friends — to create something great. Variety notes that the proximity of the short film's release to SDCC perhaps points to greater things, which would be an added layer of meaning behind Fillion's first Instagram post.

We'll have to wait and see what happens at the massive international convention, but one thing's for sure: This 14-minute action flick is better than some of the high-budget action movies we've paid actual money to see in theaters this year.

No, Vaginal Rejuvenation & Labiaplasty Are Not the Same Thing

We’ve gotten to the stage where we’re a little more comfortable talking about all things vagina and vulva-related. Yes, of course, we have a long way to go, but at least we’re getting used to the conversation.

Part of that has been around the rise of vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty procedures. With celebrities like Jada Pinkett Smith and some of the Real Housewives and Kardashians talking about their vaginal rejuvenation procedures and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reporting a 500 percent increase in labiaplasties over the past five years, people are willing to shell out money to look and feel better down there.

But what’s the difference between the two? Are they purely cosmetic, or are there actual health benefits too? We spoke with a number of experts to find out.

More: Reminder: Vagina Is Not a Dirty Word

Vaginal rejuvenation

The term “vaginal rejuvenation” refers to either a surgical procedure or radio frequency or laser procedure that restores the vaginal canal, Dr. Patricia A. Wallace, an OB-GYN board certified in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery with The Advanced Center for Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery in Mission Viejo, California, tells SheKnows.

The aim of vaginal rejuvenation is to make the vagina feel and look younger and healthier again, as aging, childbirth and other conditions can cause the vagina to lose its flexibility, firmness and tone, Dr. Yen Tran, an OB-GYN at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, tells SheKnows.

And according to Dr. Susan G. Murrmann, an OB-GYN with the McDonald + Murrmann Center for Wellness & Health in Germantown, Tennessee, vaginal rejuvenation corrects “tissue structural” problems related to vaginal laxity, painful intercourse, incontinence and menopausal symptoms that include painful intercourse and dryness.

“The goal is to tighten the vagina’s walls and opening by either using cream, laser and/or cosmetics surgery in the vagina,” she explains. “This is done to make the vagina tighter by removing excess skin and lifting the bladder neck and bladder and rectum up, thus restoring it to its usual location.”

People with vaginas seek vaginal rejuvenation for vaginal relaxation, reduced sensation during intimacy, vaginal dryness and sexual dysfunction following childbirth, Wallace explains.

If a patient approached Wallace asking about vaginal rejuvenation, she says she would first take a thorough history regarding childbirth, sexual function and concerns.

“I usually recommend conservative measures before surgery, such as pelvic physical therapy, Thermiva — a temperature-controlled radio-frequency treatment that stimulates collagen, blood flow, sensation and restores the health and vitality of the internal and external tissues,” she explains.

Another option is the MonaLisa Touch, which uses a combination of heat and fractional ablation to promote regrowth and thickening of vaginal tissue, according to research published in 2016 in the journal Menopause. There are a variety of other vaginal rejuvenation procedures, including FemiLift, IntimaLase, Ultra Femme 360 and Viveve, each with their own strengths and drawbacks to discuss with your doctor.

If there is significant relaxation of the vaginal walls on exam, she says that outpatient surgery is able to restore the vagina with minimal discomfort and about six weeks limiting physical activities, including sex.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is the surgical reduction your inner vaginal lips — also known as the labia minora, OB-GYN Dr. Pari Ghodsi tells SheKnows. Normal labia minora can vary in size, shape and appearance; asymmetry is common, as is your labia minora protruding from your labia majora [outer lips].

According to Tran, people opt for labiaplasty to make their vulva look and feel younger after being impacted by aging, childbirth, congenital issues, accidents, impairment and other conditions.

However, some doctors caution against getting labiaplasty for cosmetic purposes.

“I do not recommend labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons, but I do recommend it in situations when a woman has chronic physical discomfort from her labia,” Ghodsi stresses. “When this discomfort occurs with exercise, sex or tight-fitting clothing, it is something that can be considered, but only after nonsurgical measures are considered.”

According to Wallace, labiaplasty of the labia minora can be done either via laser or surgical repair as an outpatient procedure with minimal pain, and healing time is about two weeks.

Dr. John G. Hunter, a clinical professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and director of the Labiaplasty Center NYC, tells SheKnows that labiaplasty is requested for reduction of inner lips about 90 percent of the time. Alteration of the clitoral hood is frequently performed at the time of inner lip reduction, he adds.

Nonsurgical options can include supportive underwear, arrangement of the labia during exercise, certain moisturizers and the use of formfitting clothing, Ghodsi says. If a patient is in constant pain and their labia situation isn’t easily corrected, “then, and only then, should surgery be considered, but please do not consider it for cosmetic reasons,” she adds.

Should you consider it?

The thing is, it’s up to you what you want to do with your own body. If you’re feeling physical pain or discomfort because of your labia or vagina and one of these procedures will help, go for it. If you’re doing it solely for cosmetic reasons or to “keep it tight” for a partner, maybe think a little more about whether it’s actually necessary.

Vaginas, vulvas and labia come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and degrees of tightness. Despite the rise of the so-called “designer vagina,” unless this is something that will make you feel better, it should by no means be the new beauty standard.

Having said that, we frequently disregard people who have given birth and/or gone through menopause as nonsexual beings, which is simply not true. For those people with vaginas who do want to have less painful penetrative sex and decide to opt for vaginal rejuvenation, it should be seen in the same vein as people with a penis who use Viagra.

You deserve to feel comfortable in your own skin — vaginal or otherwise — and if you think you could benefit from vaginal reconstruction or labiaplasty, talk to your doctor about it.

Why Heart Failure Is More Deadly for Women Than Men

$

For years, women with heart attacks and failure were being ignored or misdiagnosed in hospitals because they did not have the same symptoms as men. Thankfully, through public health campaigns and increased awareness, that's changing, but according to a new study, women are still dying from heart failure at higher rates than men.

The research, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, looked at the records of more than 90,000 people in Ontario, Canada, who had been newly diagnosed with heart failure over a five-year period (from 2009 to 2013). Within one year of being diagnosed, 16.8 percent of women died compared with 14.9 percent of men.

What is happening?

“There’s something that we’re doing right in men that we’re not doing right in women, so that’s why we really need to raise awareness of this,” Dr. Louise Sun, one of the principal investigators of the study told the Windsor Star.

More: Knowing the Symptoms of a Heart Attack & Cardiac Arrest in Women Could Save a Life

Despite seeing an overall decrease in deaths from heart disease over the five-year period, they stayed higher in women. The study also found that around 10 percent of women were admitted to the hospital because of cardiovascular events compared to 9 percent of men.

“The mortality for heart failure for women is not improving, the survival is not improving to the same extent as with men,” Dr. Lisa Mielniczuk, clinical epidemiologist, cardiologist and coauthor of the study, told the Windsor Sun. “We didn’t expect to see such a marked gender difference.”

More: What You Need to Know About Women & Heart Attacks After Carrie Fisher's Death

As a reminder, heart failure is different from a heart attack. Heart failure is a chronic condition, which means that the heart is not pumping blood to the rest of the body as well as it should be according to the American Heart Association. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue and shortness of breath. Some patients with heart failure may initially come to the hospital having a heart attack, but aren't always diagnosed with heart failure, which is the most common reason for people to be admitted to the hospital after age 65, Mielniczuk said.

Why is this happening?

But why are women dying from heart failure at higher rates than men? As it turns out, much like heart attacks, women have a different type of heart failure than men: one that's harder to diagnose and treat, Sun told the Windsor Star.

In addition, she explained that the higher hospitalization and death rates in women with heart failure might be because women aren't being diagnosed early enough or potentially misdiagnosed. For example, a woman with shortness of breath could be mislabeled as having a lung condition instead of a heart failure, Sun added.

So how can things improve? The authors point to the fact that more research is needed in this area to be better understand how cardiovascular disease affects women as well as having doctors become more familiar with women's specific symptoms.

Chrissy Teigen Shuts Down Body-Shamers Who Criticized the Size of Her Boobs

Model Chrissy Teigen is no stranger to body-shamers or internet trolls, and her clapbacks are nothing short of iconic. (Remember her Piers Morgan shutdown?)

The latest in Teigen-shaming comes as a result of a recent Twitter video in which the model can be seen sitting on husband John Legend’s lap with her cleavage visible. In the video, Teigen and Legend pretend to be on Bravo’s Below Deck, which the mom of two claims is “one of the best shows on television.”

While some of Teigen’s followers took the opportunity to share in their love for Bravo TV, far more of them chose to (rudely) focus on Teigen's breasts; many of them went so far as to body-shame and slut-shame her for simply exposing cleavage on the internet.

Unsurprisingly, Teigen came prepared with a defense. She promptly clapped back at the trolls, explaining that her boobs are larger than usual because she’s breastfeeding (she gave birth to her son Miles in May, so give her a break), and she couldn’t button up her shirt.

Where’s Teigen when we’re getting trolled? Luckily, her Twitter account is public, so if we ever need a clapback in a pinch, we know where to look for inspo. Keep doing you, CT.

Why You’re Sabotaging Your Success at Work if You Skip Your Lunch Break

By Sarah Landrum

Breakfast gets all the credit, but for nine-to-fivers, lunch is a pretty important meal too. There’s only one problem — lots of employees fail to take their midday break. Instead, they sit at their desks and eat as they continue to work.

Although this seems like a time-conscious choice, failure to take a lunch break can actually sabotage your success in the long run. Here are six reasons why.

1. You’ll feel less focused

Sitting at your desk during lunch might seem like the productive choice — not taking your eyes off your to-dos means you’ll get more done, right? It turns out that you’ll feel much more focused if you walk away from your computer and eat lunch elsewhere. This is especially true if your break involves some sort of physical activity, such as a short walk.

One study by Bristol University found that employees who took a walk over their lunch break returned feeling a 21 percent boost in their concentration and 41 percent more motivated to work.

Simply changing things up and heading outside can help you pay more attention when you’re back indoors too. At the very least, a view of the outdoors — especially if that vista is lush and green — can boost your mood, which will only improve your work performance.

More: How to Be Productive at Work: 9 Ways to Tackle Your To-Do List More Quickly

2. You’ll lose brain power

Another pro for lunch — the foods you eat can help stimulate your brain, boost your energy and enhance your overall focus. Try incorporating healthy ingredients such as avocado, whole grains, nuts, blueberries or fish to reap all the best brain-related benefits. Balance nutrients by adding protein and fiber for an energy boost to make it through the day, rounded out with whole grains, fruits and veggies.

To that end, if you’re not in the habit of doing so, start packing your own healthy lunches ASAP. That way, you can control what you’re eating and ensure that your midday meal will sharpen your mind.

3. You’ll feel stressed

We can’t promise that a lunch break will get rid of all your work-related stress. But taking time to eat lunch — without multitasking or even scrolling through your social media feeds — gives you time to clear your mind. Because you’re paying attention to what you’re doing, you’ll return to your desk more focused.

But if you dedicate your half-hour — or another small period in your afternoon — to a relaxing activity, such as mindfulness meditation, you will also feel your stress fizzle. And you already know the effects stress has on your work and state of mind. By getting rid of it with a quiet, thoughtful lunch break, you’ll have much more serene and successful afternoons.

4. Your productivity will suffer

Some of the other pitfalls of powering through lunch point to this already, but it’s worth noting that a break can boost your productivity too. Think about it — you’re working from morning until the late afternoon. Without a break in the middle of that, you’ll feel mentally sluggish by the time 2 or 3 p.m. rolls around.

You might attribute this to the lunch you’re eating and the fact that a full belly makes you want a nap. But giving yourself a mental break will perk you up too — even more than a cup of coffee to counteract a Tupperware full of pasta. And with a renewed sense of energy, you’ll power through the afternoon and feel even more productive than you would have without that lunch break.

5. You’ll be less creative

The creative mind thrives in a state of constant stimulation. That’s not to say you should go and work somewhere with a ton of distractions, but a change of scenery can breathe new life into your workplace pursuits.

Once again, heading outdoors is advisable — nature restores the mind and allows you to think in new ways once you return to your desk. But environments outside your office are stimulating in general.

For example, in the afternoons, creative minds tend to thrive while working in a coffee shop. Rather than the quiet, stark confines of your office, you’ll have the din of other customers ordering and drinking their java as well as the shop’s interesting decor to inspire you. If you can’t work remotely, then at least take a lunch break off-site from time to time for the same effect.

More:  How to Stop Worrying About Work on Nights & Weekends

6. You won't make connections at work

There are plenty of simple ways to make friends while you’re on the job. Heading to the break room to eat lunch opens you up to connections with your colleagues — you never know who will sit down next to you and strike up a conversation. And once you have made a few work friends, heading out to lunch together will only strengthen the bond.

You already know the benefits of having buddies and social engagements — you feel better when you're around people you love. But you can carry work connections with you through your career too to help you when you need references, a new job or even career advice — that all could start at lunch.

So, tomorrow — and until you retire — don’t let your lunch break pass you by. Take advantage of that time by grabbing your brown bag and leaving your desk. As you can see, you’ll be better for it.

Don't Forget to Put Sunscreen on These Body Parts

$

0

Summer is in full swing, and the sunshine isn’t stopping anytime soon. As you make your way out to the beaches, the pools and the barbecues, you may be asking yourself, "Do I need to put on sunscreen for this?" Quick answer: Yes.

“All parts of the body should get sun protection in the form of either good clothing coverup or sunscreen,” Dr. Tara Rao, board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, tells SheKnows. “A rule of thumb is to apply about two shot glasses of sunscreen to cover the whole body and to reapply every two hours, especially when active.”

But even with this sound dermatological advice under your belt, it’s likely you’re still forgetting to hit some of those nooks and crannies. Here are the parts of the body dermatologists are wishing you’d cover with sunscreen this summer.

Your hands

How could we forget something that we use to do everything?

“People really neglect their hands when it comes to sunscreen, and unfortunately, the hands are a dead giveaway for your age,” Dr. Susan Weinkle, a board-certified dermatologist in Bradenton, Florida, tells SheKnows.

She suggests applying a generous amount of sunscreen to the tops of the hands and fingers and reapplying after you’ve washed your hands.

Unless you’re wearing gloves for the summer, your hands will definitely be getting some rays. And yes, this includes when you're in a car. So take the time to apply and reapply, and be sure to cover the areas around and beneath any rings or bracelets you may be wearing.

More: 20 Under-$20 Sunscreens With Safety Approval From the Environmental Working Group

Your ears

Listen here! Covering your nose, cheeks and forehead with SPF isn’t enough.

“In general, the back of the body often gets short shrift for sunscreen application,” Rao says. “In particular, the back of the ears is often forgotten.”

Think about it: the backs of your ears lose the entirety of their protection as soon as you throw your hair up in a ponytail. Similarly, our dermatologists agree that the rims of the ears unknowingly become exposed to UV rays throughout the day as well.

“Women with short hair or those who like to wear a ball cap must understand that the rims of their ears are especially vulnerable,” Weinkle says, explaining that people sometimes believe that their ears are covered when they’re actually not.

A good tip is to first apply sunscreen when your hair out of the way — like in a bun or ponytail — so that you’ll be covered throughout the rest of the day regardless of what you decide to do with your hair.

Your décolletage

The décolletage — which is a fancy word for your neck and chest area — is one of the areas most exposed to UV rays on your body. In other words, it is one of the first places that will age with sun damage. For this reason, it is essential to apply sunscreen along and beneath the neckline and straps of your shirts and bathing suit tops, which can adjust throughout the day and expose unprotected skin.

“People put sunscreen on their face and they think their makeup is protecting them, and then they don’t put sunscreen on their décolletage,” Weinkle says. “This includes the sides of their neck, a common area where women get melasma, a gray pigmentation that occurs with ultraviolet light.”

Even if you wear a foundation that has SPF, it’s likely that you’re not blending it all the way down your neck. Be sure to give this area some extra sunscreen attention.

More: Do You Really Need Different Sunscreens for Your Body & Face?

Your scalp

Yes, this applies to everyone of every hair type, length and color. Because they’re so thin, your hairline and part line rarely get any love from your sunscreen routine.

When applying sunscreen to your face, be sure to extend the coverage along the entirety of your hairline, from the front of your face to the back of your neck.

When it comes to the scalp and part line, no one wants to put globs of greasy white sunscreen into their hair. Luckily, there are actually some pretty decent sunscreen sprays available to keep you protected without weighing your hair down. Try them out!

More: The Best & Worst Sunscreens for Kids & Babies

So, now that you’re ready to cover every inch of your body with sunscreen, when do you know when enough is enough?

“Sunscreen can expire,” Weinkle says. “The truth is if you have one tube from one year to the next, you’re not using enough.”

Let’s make that a new summer goal. Finish those tubes!

The New Stranger Things Teaser Has Some Major Clues About Season 3

On Monday, Netflix dropped a teaser for Stranger Things season three. It isn't the typical teaser, but that's what make it so special. The first look is a retro-styled commercial for a new mall, the Starcourt Mall, opening up in Hawkins, Indiana. It's exactly what a shopping establishment looked like in the '80s, with stores like Claire's, Kaufman Shoes, Waldenbooks, Sam Goody and Jazzercise.

More: Stranger Things Spoilers Are Here, & Warning: They’re Dark

Most important, as showcased in the teaser, the Starcourt Mall has a "state-of-the-art food court," including Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Parlor. And guess who just happens to work there? Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) and newcomer Robin, played by Maya Hawke (her parents are Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman). They are seen donning nautical-themed uniforms and both look thrilled [insert sarcasm] upon saying to the camera, "Ahoy!"

This really is the perfect Stranger Things teaser to get fans excited about the upcoming season. So much so, the video isn't just serving up ice cream, but what also appear to be major clues about the third season.

More: Here Are Some Theories About the 2 New Actors Joining Stranger Things Season 3

1. The premiere date

At the end of the video, it says Starcourt Mall is "Coming Next Summer!" So does that mean fans have to wait until summer 2019 for new episodes? That just seems so far away — and is also just plain cruel.

2. Dawn of the Dead vibes

As pointed out by Nerdist, the teaser feels like Dawn of the Dead. For those who've never seen the 1978 movie, it's about zombies and part of it takes place in a mall. Does this mean a new monster is on its way to Hawkins? Or maybe the series will simply pay homage in some way to the cult classic?

3. The timeframe

Seeing as the mall is said to be opening in summer 2019, this seems to suggest season three will take place in summer. So far, we've experienced Christmas and Halloween in Hawkins, so summer would be a welcome change of pace.

4. A whole new setting

If season three does take place during summer, then that would mean the setting wouldn't be at school, like it was for the first two seasons. Who knows? Most of the season might even take place at the Starcourt Mall. Whatever the case, it would be nice to see how everyone in Hawkins spends their summers, you know, when they're not fighting monsters and trying to figure out the Upside Down.

5. The Hunt for Red October

As reported by Insider, after the mention of Waldenbooks, the camera quickly focuses on Tom Clancy's novel The Hunt for Red October. According to the outlet, this doesn't seem to be a coincidence, but a clue about the season three plot. Clancy's novel is about a Soviet captain who abandons his orders and defects from the Soviet Navy. In Stranger Things season one, Dr. Brenner was shown to be using Eleven's powers to spy on Russians. Hmm... maybe this will come back into play somehow?

Stranger Things Season 3 teaser, Steve and Robin

6. Steve & Robin

Finally, there are Steve and Robin. Not only does it look like Steve's summer job is scooping ice cream, but he will be working alongside the new character. Will they be romantically involved, especially now that Steve and Nancy are no longer a couple? Or, maybe Steve and Robin will end up battling whatever new darkness is headed Hawkins' way? As for Robin, per Deadline, she is "described as an alternative girl who is equal parts sharp and playful. Bored with her mundane day job, she just wants a little excitement in her life… and gets more than she bargained for when she uncovers a dark secret in Hawkins."

This Disney Princess Changed My Daughter's Life

“Mom!” My 3-year-old shrieked. “She looks just like me! She's a princess and she looks like me! Look!" The excitement emanating from her voice was nothing like I had heard before. This was bigger than the box of Smarties she was allowed to eat before dinner, bigger than that time we saw Paw Patrol characters at the library, bigger than the Thomas the Tank Engine jammies she got for Christmas. This was the kind of excitement that knew no bounds. This was Moana: a fearless brown girl on my daughter's TV screen.

My daughter had recently gotten into Frozen because she heard the soundtrack at preschool and frequently requested we play the songs on YouTube for her so she could practice her dance moves. We had listened to the songs over and over again until she had every hair flick and step down pat. She pretended to be Elsa while my 1-year-old was told to play Anna, and the two of them would twirl and sway to the music every night after dinner.

After one such dance party, my husband and I had heard all of “Let it Go” as often as we could bear, so we suggested she dance to another song. The next suggestion on YouTube was “How Far I’ll go” from Moana. We hadn’t seen the movie or heard the songs, so we decided to give it a try.

More: No, Being Both Muslim & Catholic Isn't "Confusing" for My Kids

Moana came on the screen, effervescent with her olive skin and long, curly dark hair. I watched my 3-year-old, waiting for her to start twirling. Instead, she just stood there, mouth agape, eyes wide open, staring at the screen. Her lips slowly inched into a wide smile and then a toothy grin. She was glowing. She was ecstatic.

My daughter is not of Polynesian heritage like Moana. She doesn’t care much for the ocean, either. She is a Pakistani-Dutch-English-Canadian toddler who loves steam engines and Disney princesses. Her favorite colors are pink and purple, and she loves running fast at the park and hanging on the monkey bars.

None of that mattered the moment she laid eyes on Moana.

moanaMore: How White Families Can Teach Kids to Use Their Privilege for Good

In Moana, she saw herself. My daughter saw her own dark curly hair and her own olive skin. She saw her own big brown eyes and wide smile. She saw herself. For the first time, she saw a Disney princess that looked like her. And it changed her world.

I don’t know exactly how watching Moana affects her, but I know it gives her happiness. She doesn’t have the words to tell me about the importance of children of color seeing other people of color on TV. She doesn’t know how this is a recent movement and that it is far from perfect. She doesn’t know there is still a long, long way to go, but she knows it matters. She understands that she doesn’t look like Elsa or Anna. She’s old enough to notice that her skin isn’t porcelain white like many of the characters she watches so lovingly. She can tell that her hair isn’t straight and blond. She sees the differences, even at 3 years old.

Researchers from Tufts University write in The Conversation that children’s television is now more diverse than it has ever been. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to most people. What is profoundly important, the researchers say, is that it’s vital for children to see characters who look and sound like them and their families.

Why? Because “kids notice differences,” as the researchers so eloquently put it.

Before this moment, I didn't realize I needed to have conversations about race and ethnicity with my 3-year-old, but clearly, she’s aware of much more than I thought she was. She’s bright and observant and intensely detail-oriented. She knows what she looks like and what her idols on TV look like, and she can see that the two are not the same.

More: 14 Kid-Friendly Movies & TV Shows That Educate About Diversity & Race

My daughter continues to amaze me with her intellect. She teaches me something new every day. This lesson is a deeply important one. I’ve started searching for more TV shows and movies she can enjoy that portray people of color. I likely won’t be able to find the perfect Pakistani-Dutch-English-Canadian mix like her, but I hope I’ll have more than just a few stereotypical options to choose from.

I hope that by the time she is older, she is able to see many people like her on TV and in the movies. I hope her children don’t have a moment like she did, completely in awe that it was even possible for someone like her to be a Disney princess. By that time, they will — I hope — already know that this is possible. It won’t be an unusual and exciting moment; it will just be the norm.

This is just heartbreaking to hear. Late on Monday evening, Katharine McPhee announced on Instagram that her father, Daniel McPhee, had died. The news comes just two weeks after she got engaged to David Foster in Italy and, from the wording in her statement, it appears this happened quite unexpectedly.

More: David Foster Made a Statement About His Engagement to Katharine McPhee

McPhee's Instagram post is a photo of her and her father snuggled close and looking very happy. In addition to the photo, McPhee wrote a lengthy statement full of shock, sadness and love for her father in the wake of his death.

"I can’t believe I’m even writing this... But it is with a heavy heart that I share that my sweet sweet Papa left this earth yesterday morning. We as a family are completely heartbroken and devastated," McPhee's statement begins. "He was my biggest fan, my biggest champion, always telling me to 'Give em hell kid!' He was so kind and caring and made sure we knew how much he loved us."

McPhee also sent her love to her dad, her family and the friends who have supported her during this difficult time. "Not sure my heart will ever be the same," she wrote, going on to say, "I love you Papa. I already miss you so much. This hurts."

No details about Daniel McPhee's cause of death we released by Katharine McPhee or any of his relatives. Katharine McPhee announced on July 14 — days before his death — that she would be taking a break from her role in Waitress on Broadway to fly home to Los Angeles to be with her family.

Sparkling water and rosé are all the rage when it comes to the cooler drinks in town, but when you want to snuggle up and get cozy, colorful, warm milk is where it's at. We were first drawn into the trend with turmeric-spiced golden milk, but there's a new colorful concoction in town that's ready to give you the best beauty rest of your life.

More: Golden Cashew Milk Is a Satisfying Winter Drink With Real Health Benefits

It's called pink moon milk, and it's as tasty as it is gorgeous. But it's more than just a drink. Pink moon milk is a "functional" food, meaning its ingredients have certain properties that affect the way you feel. In this case, tart cherry juice is the secret ingredient.

Pink Moon MilkTart cherry juice is one of the few foods that naturally contain the sleep hormone melatonin. Instead of taking a supplement, you can sip this pink moon milk before bed to soothe your nerves and relax.

Combined with creamy almond milk and honey or maple syrup, the tartness of the cherry juice is perfectly mellowed to become a luxurious before-bed drink. Ashwagandha powder is an optional ingredient. It's considered to be an adaptogen by herbalists, meaning it helps balance the body, normalize its processes and protect against stress.

Pink moon milk recipe

The most essential elements of this recipe are the tart cherry juice and nondairy milk (cow's milk is harder to digest, especially right before bed).

Recipe adapted from Heartbeet Kitchen

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Total time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 6 ounces almond milk
  • 4 ounces unsweetened tart cherry juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ashwagandha powder
  • Dried culinary rose petals

Directions:

  1. In a small pot over low heat, bring the almond milk and tart cherry juice to temperature, around 140 degrees F (just below scalding), around 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Remove it from heat, and whisk in honey and ashwagandha. To make it really frothy, pour the contents into the blender and blend on high for a few seconds until you get the desired texture, but that step is optional and can cool off your mixture.
  3. Top with rose petals and drink warm.

Not a fan of warm, milky beverages? Try making mulled tart cherry juice, simmering it gently with herbal tea, honey, cinnamon and orange slices instead.

The next time you want to reach for that bottle of Tylenol PM, think again. Maybe a mug of pink moon milk is all you need to send you off to dreamland.

How Meryl Streep & Cher Really Felt About Reuniting On-Screen

Meryl Streep's not only a powerhouse talent, she's also a powerhouse friend – and that was on full display as she showered her fellow Hollywood peers with love and joy at the Mama Mia: Here We Go Again London premiere on Monday, July 17, 2018.

When asked how reuniting on-screen with Cher, someone equally as famous as her, was after 35 years (they acted together in Silkwood in 1983), Streep gushed that it was absolutely "fantastic."

"I came on the set the day that she sang 'Fernando.' That was my first day... And she just lifted the lid off the place! I mean, she steals the movie," she told Entertainment Tonight

Oddly enough, Cher plays Streep's mother in the Mama Mia sequel – if you think that's weird, you're not alone. Cher is only Streep's senior by 3 years. But Streep said somehow, it made sense.

"She's lived a much longer life than I have." Ya, sure. Streep's only won 173 awards – 3 of those being Oscars – been nominated 355 times; played a fashion Queen (Devil Wears Prada), cooking legend (Julia Child), Holocaust Survivor (Sophie's Choice), and Prime Minister (The Iron Lady); loved and lost (her first love John Cazale died of bone cancer in 1978, she later married her current husband Don Gummer), and raised 4 children, but life experience? Cher's had so much more. There's tons of justification there.

Either way, Cher had nothing but love for her former Silkwood costar, telling ET, "We've stayed friends all these years. I cannot believe that, but [Silkwood] was my first film, and she helped me. I mean, she was unbelievable, because I had no idea what I was doing... It's great to see her again."

Cher & Streep's friendship isn't the only Hollywood duo that's remained tight through the years. It seems Streep and her on-screen Mama Mia daughter Amanda Seyfried are also still quite chummy.

Meghan Markle Is Reportedly Not Happy About Her Dad Doing So Many Interviews

There may been even more tension between Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and her father, Thomas Markle, than Meghan is willing to let on. With Markle recently going on the record and making potentially inflammatory claims that his daughter is "terrified" in her new role as a member of the royal family, Entertainment Tonight has released its own new report featuring claims that both Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, are not at all pleased with Markle continuing to grant these kinds of tell-all, paid interviews.

More: Meghan Markle's Dad Claims She's 'Terrified' in Another Unauthorized Interview

According to an unnamed source who spoke with ET, Meghan and Harry are not pleased that Markle continues to do interviews, with the implication being that Markle is not conferring with his daughter and son-in-law before doing them with outlets like UK tabloid The Sun.

Nothing that neither Meghan nor Harry has "had any contact" with Markle, the source notes that, "[They] are frustrated he keeps speaking to the tabloids and taking payment for interviews."

More: Meghan Markle Misses Her Previous Day Job

In the Sun interview that's allegedly sparked this new wave of discontent, Markle spoke about how he believes he knows Meghan is "terrified," telling the outlet: "I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile," he explained. "I've seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don't like the one I'm seeing now. This one isn't even a stage smile — this is a pained smile."

This may be the most we get to hear about this alleged tension between Meghan and her father, as one would expect both she and Harry will not release a public statement about Markle's actions. If it is true that Meghan is unhappy with her father's continued engagement with the press against her wishes — especially if he is making claims that may not be true about her — then hopefully there can be a resolution this disconnect so that the interviews can cool off a bit.

Urgent Care Centers Overprescribe Antibiotics — Here's Why That's a Problem

$

Growing up, whenever I had any sort of serious runny nose, cough or sinus infection, I'd go to my pediatrician, and he'd inevitably prescribe amoxicillin. Honestly, I didn't mind: It came in the form of a pink, sugary, bubble gum-flavored liquid that tasted like dessert. The problem is that, like so many other doctors in the 1980s and 1990s, antibiotics were treated as the solution to almost any illness — even if it wasn't necessary or the best option.

Thankfully, now we have a better understanding of antibiotic use and misuse — including how taking them when they're not necessary and won't work (like for viral infections) can lead to antibiotic resistance. But according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and the Pew Charitable Trusts, urgent care medical centers are still prescribing antibiotics far more often than necessary.

More: Antibiotics You Might Want to Avoid During Pregnancy

In fact, the study reports, nearly half of those (46 percent) who visit urgent care clinics with the symptoms of a cold or the flu come away with some form of antibiotics, despite the fact that the CDC has clear guidelines that this type of medication should not be used to treat viruses like colds or influenza. This is compared with the 24 percent of emergency rooms patients who get an antibiotic prescription and 17 percent who obtain them at regular (non-walk-in) medical offices.

Why does it matter?

According to the report, walk-in health clinics play a large role in providing outpatient care in the United States, receiving an estimated 10.5 million visits a year.

Given how frequently antibiotics are prescribed, it has led many people to think that if they see a doctor and don't get a prescription for them, they will not get better. And in situations in a walk-in clinic, like the ones in the study, when you're not seeing a regular doctor, patients may feel more comfortable demanding what they perceive to be the cure-all antibiotic prescription, leading to these higher rates of overuse.

When antibiotics are used to treat illnesses, including viral upper-respiratory tract infections (common cold), bronchitis/bronchiolitis, asthma/allergy, influenza and certain middle-ear infections (characterized by noninfected fluid in the middle ear), they will not be effective because these conditions are caused by viruses, not bacteria.

On top of that, according to the Mayo Clinic, taking an antibiotic for a viral infection won't keep other people from getting sick, may cause unnecessary and harmful side effects and promotes antibiotic resistance. And the outcome is serious: Around 2 million infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria occur in the United States each year, resulting in 23,000 deaths.

More: Why Some Cold Medicines Moved (& Stayed) Behind the Counter

"If you take an antibiotic when you actually have a viral infection, the antibiotic attacks bacteria in your body — bacteria that are either beneficial or at least not causing disease," according to the Mayo Clinic. "This misdirected treatment can then promote antibiotic-resistant properties in harmless bacteria that can be shared with other bacteria, or create an opportunity for potentially harmful bacteria to replace the harmless ones."

So, what can you do to help slow down antibiotic resistance? For starters, don't pressure a doctor into giving you antibiotics if they say you don't need them. Also, be sure to take any antibiotics only as directed and not share them with anyone else (or take anyone else's prescription).

People Are Freaking Out About This Runway Model's Visible Breast — & the Baby on It

It's just your average mom story: Woman has baby, woman makes it to Sports Illustrated finals of model casting call, woman nurses baby on the runway, half the internet cheers, half the internet freaks out because, OMG, breasts. Never mind that this is a Sports Illustrated swimsuit contest (OMG, breasts). Turns out — shocker — a lot of men (and plenty of women) prefer breasts as accessories, not center stage doing their job.

MoreCandice Swanepoel Takes on Breastfeeding Police

Mara Martin (and her 5-month-old baby girl) made big waves when Martin was chosen as one of 16 finalists in the Sports Illustrated Miami open call model search. Finalists got the opportunity to strut the catwalk, and Martin decided to breastfeed her infant as she walked.

Here's Martin and her crazy-cute daughter on Instagram.

And here's the video that has half of social media yelling, "You go, girl!" and the other half screaming, "WTF?"

You can probably guess at the comments, but here's a sampling from the deeply affronted:

"Publicity stunt! No one needs to see that!??"

"That’s weird"

"Cant wait to see giving birth on the runway!"

"I’m so confused. I thought this runway show was to showcase the swimwear, yet all I can see is a baby on a boob. I can’t even see how the swimsuit fits so what was the point exactly? To exploit a mother and child breastfeeding to gain attention."

Fortunately, there were plenty of people happy to defend Martin's choice:

"so SI actually released the story of how this happened and you sir are wrong. Her baby was comfort nursing (to sleep) backstage and the editor asked her personally if she would mind walking next. You’ve obviously never nursed a baby to sleep and know how tedious it can be to unlatch a sleeping and content baby."

"it's almost never fair to generalize, and at the very least this women took a institution like the runway where womens bodies exist only as an object and showcased one of its actual powerful uses. That's what I see."

More7 Women Share Their Most Insane Breastfeeding Stories

That's exactly what we see too. The outrage would almost be funny given the paradoxical nature (OMG, boobies in a Sports Illustrated swimsuit contest) if it weren't so damn depressing. But Martin's words in her follow-up Instagram post about normalizing breastfeeding have us cheering.

Our favorite part is when Martin argues that there are more deserving headlines from this particular model search: "It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL! But to be honest, the real reason I can’t believe it is a headline is because it shouldn’t be a headline!!! My story of being a mother and feeding her while walking is just that. Last night there are far more deserving headlines that our world should see. One woman is going to boot camp in two weeks to serve our country (sorry i don’t know your IG handle), one woman had a mastectomy (@allynrose), and another is a cancer survivor, 2x paralympic gold medalist, as well as a mother herself (@bren_hucks you rock) Those are the stories that our world should be discussing!!!!"

Mara Martin, we're a fan for sure. Sounds like Sports Illustrated chose a terrific lineup of women in its Miami contest — and focused on strong and sexy.

Danica Patrick Gives an Update On Her Relationship With Aaron Rodgers

Danica Patrick has attended the ESPY's for the past 13 years – that's quite a long time, folks. So this year, to mark her 14th consecutive years of attendance, she's taking on a much bigger role and hosting the darn show, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 18.

As if standing in the spotlight all night long won't make it memorable enough, there's one other factor making Patrick even more exited – her current boyfriend of 7 months Aaron Rodgers will be in the audience, cheering her on.

More: There's One Problem With Danica Patrick & Aaron Rodger's Relationship

“I saw his [seat] card so… let's hope he shows,” Patrick joked during an interview with Extra

While Patrick may have nerves about hosting sport's biggest night (she's been memorizing her lines and rehearsing all week!), it's not Rodger's attendance that's making her uneasy.

"He's seen this go down so many times," she told Extra. "He doesn't want to watch anything before the show. Aaron wants to watch it cold… I feel like I'm gonna get a very authentic response. And it better be kind no matter what.”

Patrick is going to crush the hosting job – like pretty much everything else she does – so we have no doubts Rodgers will be showering her with compliments and 'Bravas!' at the night's close. But since we likely won't get to see the couple walk the red carpet together or cuddling in their seats, how's the relationship going? Well, from the looks of things, really, really well.

Patrick and Rodgers recently took a vacation together to Lake Tahoe, Nevada where they relaxed, watched golf, went paddle boarding, and worked out because A) they're athletes, and B) the couple that sweats together stays together.

“Sometimes we work together. But he does more sports-specific stuff… I'm like... any sport... We do work out sometimes. He's an ab machine.”

Ab machine, eh? That little comment caused us to do some Instgram stalking and discover that there are zero shirtless pictures available at this time. Hey Ms. Patrick – we need photographic evidence or it never happened. Please, and thank you.

The ESPY Awards air tomorrow night on ABC. The presenters will include Hollywood stars and sports fans Kate Beckinsale, Alison Brie, Jennifer Garner, Allison Janney, Jon Stewart and Jessica Szohr. So with Patrick at the Helm and Rodgers blowing kisses from his seat, it should be a poppin' night.

Supermodel Kate Upton & Astros Pitcher Justin Verlander Expecting First Child

Supermodels and pro athletes go together like chocolate and peanut butter, right? So we weren't that surprised when Kate Upton married Justin Verlander last November in Tuscany because that's just what you do when you're a model and a Houston Astros pitcher in love. We were, however, surprised to find out this morning that the pair is expecting their first child. Upton  released the happy news  in a super-glam Instagram reveal. I mean, dang.

Upton captioned the photo simply "PregnantinMiami @justinverlander." For his part, Verlander reposted Upton's pic and wrote, “You’re going to be the most amazing Mom!! I can’t wait to start this new journey with you. You’re the most thoughtful, loving, caring, and strong woman I’ve ever met! I’m so proud that our little one is going to be raised in this world by a woman like you! I love you so much.”

More8 Things You Didn't Know About Kate Upton

Vogue covered Upton and Verlander's nuptials, which took place at the Rosewood resort above a garden (but of course). Upton wowed in a bespoke lace wedding gown by Valentino. According to CNN, Upton and Verlander had to miss the originally planned wedding date because Verlander's team, the Astros, wound up playing in (and winning) Game 7 of the World Series, which is pretty much the best reason we've ever heard to postpone a wedding.

“It was really important to Justin and me that it feel like we were on vacation with our closest friends and family,” Upton told Vogue about the big day, which included fireworks and karaoke and a whole lot of really photogenic humans.
