Sylvester Stallone opens up about son's death

0
0
Just a month after his son's death, Sylvester Stallone is finally out and promoting his new movie.

Sylvester StalloneIt has been just over a month since Sylvester Stallone’ son Sage was found dead in his California home. And today, the actor spoke out for the first time.

"It's tough. It's very tough… it's a horrible situation," Stallone told ABC News.

Stallone canceled all promotional appearances for his new movie after his son, 36, was found dead on July 13. The news of the death came just a day after Stallone appeared with his Expendables 2 co-stars at Comic Con. The other stars had since said they just wanted to give the grieving father some space and time to heal.

But this morning, Stallone finally sat down with Good Morning America to talk about the movie, and his loss.

"Time, hopefully, will heal, and you try to get through it, but it's just something. It's a reality of life," he said. "I think it's important to get back and start reliving your life. Otherwise, you can go into a spiral."

He is surrounded by his co-stars from the movie, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren.

The film also stars Chuck Norris, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and Liam Hemsworth.

“Its shoot-'em-up, knock-'em-out, high-flying plot focuses on a group of mercenaries who seek revenge for the murder of a friend,” said ABC News.

After Sage’s death, the actors in the film showed their support for their co-star.

"He knows we're thinking about him," Lundgren told Good Morning America. "He knows us. He knows our prayers go out to him. But what are you going to do? I have two kids. And all you can do is hug your kids and go thank God it didn't happen to you."

The Expendables brought in almost $300 million to the box office, and expectations for the sequel are high. Stallone co-wrote the film and recruited the other stars to participate.

The Expendables 2 opens on Friday.

The notoriously private daughter -- and only child of former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton -- revealed to Vogue magazine she has yet to close the door on that particular career choice. Clinton tells Vogue, "Before my mom’s campaign I would have said no," she says. "And now I don’t know..."

Is Chelsea Clinton joining the family business? >>

She goes on, "If there were to be a point where it was something I felt called to do and I didn’t think there was someone who was sufficiently committed to building a healthier, more just, more equitable, more productive world?" Chelsea answers her own question, "Then that would be a question I’d have to ask and answer."

The 31-year-old Chelsea Clinton graduated from Stanford University, attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, completed a Masters of Public Health at Columbia University and is currently pursuing her doctorate at Oxford. In 2010 she married investment banker Marc Mezvinsky in New York. A close friend, Bari Lurie, tells Vogue Mezvinsky helped Clinton through her break-up with longtime boyfriend Ian Klaus. First Cameroon, now 4 Congolese missing after Olympics

More than a week after seven Cameroon athletes went missing from the Olympics, four Congolese have now been reported missing.

OlympicsOn Aug. 6, Team Cameroon mission head David Ojong told the country’s sports ministry they had misplaced seven Olympic athletes.

Ojong reported that a women’s soccer player, a swimmer and five boxers had gone missing. According to Reuters, the disappearances were probably not an accident. They report that the athletes will probably seek asylum in the United Kingdom, because of “economic reasons” in their country.

And now, four members of the Congolese Olympic team have also disappeared. According to Yahoo, a U.N.-run radio station in the Congo said one of their athletes and three of their officials are missing.

Judo athlete Cedric Mandembo was among the missing. He disappeared after the closing ceremony and has not been available by cell phone.

“Authorities tell the radio station that the Congolese athlete left the Olympic village with his baggage without saying where he was going,” said Yahoo. “The others who have gone missing are two officials with the boxing and judo teams, and a national athletic official.”

All four had left without their luggage.

For those left in the two countries, some are sympathetic… if the missing did leave on purpose.

“Admittedly not all of them are going to succeed, but those who are a bit lucky will be able to train one day under good conditions, will be paid correctly, which is currently very far from being the case for athletes engaged in Cameroon,” Cameroonian journalist Jean-Bruno Tagne told Radio Netherlands Worldwide after the disappearances, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The newspaper also reports that in the past, athletes looking to defect from their countries have used international sporting events such as the Olympics as their path to a different life.

Congo has been in the midst of war and a dictatorship and the athletes are not thought to be in danger.

The athletes from Cameroon have still not been heard from.

Who would David Beckham most like to invite to dinner?

The 37-year-old soccer player is loving life. He talks about his family, his LA life and what a perfect dinner party would look like.

David BeckhamDavid Beckham has had a busy couple of years. He left his longtime team, Manchester United, and after playing for a couple other teams, moved his family to Los Angeles. He also now has four children to chase around.

But when asked who he would most like to invite to dinner, the answer might be surprising.

“I'd invite Jack Nicholson, Prince Harry, Prince William, Boris Johnson and President Obama,” he said, according to the Australia Sky News.

Beckham now has four children with his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham -- 13-year-old Brooklyn, nine-year-old Romeo, seven-year-old Cruz and 13-month-old Harper. He said many times, it’s hard to keep up with all of them.

“In our house it's like crowd control now, we've got three boys with a lot of energy, so I'm always out in the garden, taking them for runs and playing all kinds of sport with them,” he said. “With our little girl she's almost walking, so it's a case of following her around, trying to catch her when she does fall.”

While he loves living in Los Angeles, he said that he misses London, a city he will always consider as his home.

“There's many places in the world that I've travelled to with my job, but I always love home to London, coming home for me is a holiday,” he said in a promotional video, according to the Australia Sky News.

The athlete made an appearance at the Olympics opening ceremony bringing the Olympic torch to the stadium on a boat. He was then seen at many different events throughout the London games. His wife made an appearance with the Spice Girls, performing at the closing ceremonies.

In March, Obama roasted Beckham at a fundraiser, saying “He is tough. In fact, it is a rare man who can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear."

Beckham currently plays soccer for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He has also played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Milan.

Mel B got her girl power back Sunday night

It was an easy decision for The Spice Girls to say yes to the closing ceremony at the Olympics, but how easy was it to perform together after five years apart?

Melanie BrownThe Olympic closing ceremony Sunday night featured a lot of acts. But probably one of the most anticipated was the reunion of the Spice Girls. The 90’s girl group hasn’t performed together in years.

Melanie Brown, or “Scary Spice” as she is known to fans, said the group had been anticipating the performance just as much as everyone else.

“It was about time we'd gotten together. We haven't been together in five years,” she told MTV News Tuesday. “And it's been a great year for Britain this year and we thought 'How perfect would that be to be a part of the Olympics?' We all decided to do it and it all happened within like two to three weeks. We all synced up our diaries and schedules and made it happen."

The group had talked about the song choice when asked to perform at the ceremony, and she said to them it was an easy decision.

"Well, we knew that we had to perform 'Wannabe' because that was our first song introduction to the music industry,” she said. “And then the perfect match the vibe and the tempo was 'Spice Up Your Life.' It was kind of a no-brainer."

Brown said the costume choice was easy too. Each was dressed in their own style and persona for the performance Sunday night.

The group was formed in 1994 but were launched into the worldwide scene in 1996. They did a reunion tour in 2007 but haven’t performed together since. The five singers have kept busy over the years though, with fashion, families and even a musical launched this year in London.

"Whenever we get together, whether it be we go out for dinner or you know we just launched our ['Viva Forever'] musical, we just click back into how we were 20 years ago with each other," she told MTV News. "It's kind of very comfortable and very respectful girl-power feeling that we have between each other. It's like we just saw each other yesterday always."

Kristen Stewart dropped from Snow White sequel?

0
0
The actress has had a tough couple of weeks since the news of her affair became public, but this is the first we have heard of her losing a role over it. Is this a look into things to come for Stewart?

Stewart Hemsworth

As news of Kristen Stewart’s affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders broke, no one gave much thought to how this might affect the movie where they met.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal has decided to move forward without Stewart in the role of the fairy tale character. Actually, it looks like they have decided to move forward without anyone in that role.

“Universal has decided to shelf its planned Snow White and the Huntsman sequel and is instead focusing on a solo Huntsman movie starring Chris Hemsworth,” said the Hollywood Reporter.

A source told the publication that the once-conceived sequel to the fairy tale will now be a spin-off focusing on the Thor star. Not only this, but the writer of the original film will also not be returning.

“Screenwriter David Koepp, who had been hired to pen the continuation of the original film, is being settled out of his rich contract, according to sources,” said the Hollywood Reporter, “as the project is being transformed into something other than the movie that Koepp had been hired to write.”

The studio has not commented on the move or whether it is in response to the news of Stewart and Sanders’ affair. There is also no word on whether Sanders will return to direct the next film.

“While it might have been awkward for Stewart and Sanders to reunite for a sequel, it is not clear why the decision to move forward without Stewart was made,” said the Hollywood Reporter. “Universal did not respond to a request for comment.”

The decision may have been an easier one than dropping Stewart and hiring a new actress for the part. This way, the studio can say they have decided to go in a different direction rather than address the controversy.

However, there could also be other reasons for the move. Stewart is currently the highest paid actress in Hollywood, and the decision could simply be a budgetary one.

"The studio is currently exploring options to continue the franchise," a Universal spokeswoman told the Hollywood Reporter. They have not confirmed the Hollywood Reporter's sources.

Which ex is Taylor Swift's new song about?

0
0
The singer has never been shy about singing about her ex-boyfriends. This time is no different, but we are all left guessing who "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is about.

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift is known for including her real life in her songs, including love, like and break-ups.

The title of her new song is enough to make any Swift fan or follower curious who it might have been written about. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” was first played for her fans during a web chat Monday night.

“So this is the new single. It's a really romantic song,” she said sarcastically during the chat. “It's really touching and sensitive, for my lovely ex-boyfriend."

The song appears to be speaking about a specific experience in Swift’s life.

“When you come around again and say / Baby, I miss you and I swear I'm gonna change,” said the lyrics. “Trust me, remember how that lasted for a day / I say, I hate you, we break up, you call me, I love you.”

So let’s see. There was John Mayer, who Swift had a bad breakup with. But she already wrote a song about him.

“Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone
/ Don't you think I was too young / To be messed with?” she sang in “Dear John.”

She also dated Joe Jonas, but that was four years ago and she also wrote a song about him. Sort of.

In 2009, Swift hosted Saturday Night Live, and wrote a song as her monologue. She started the song talking about her songs and relationships.

“I like writing songs about douchebags who cheat on me,” she sang her monologue. “I like writing their names into songs so they’re ashamed to go in public.”

You might think I’d bring up Joe, that guy who broke up with me on the phone, but I’m not going to mention him in my monologue,” she continued.

She then mentioned Taylor Lautner, who she was dating at the time, and blew him a kiss.

So who else does that leave? She could actually be talking about Lautner, since that relationship eventually ended. She was also linked to Jake Gyllenhaal a few years ago. And she could of course be speaking about John Mayer or Joe Jonas again.

Swift has never been shy about calling our her ex’s in her songs, so hopefully she will admit who “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is about someday.

But in the singer’s defense, she also writes songs about her faults in relationships too.

“So this is me swallowing my pride / Standing in front of you saying, ‘I'm sorry for that night.’" she sang in “Back to December.”

No matter what, Swift seems truly happy now with new boyfriend Conor Kennedy. The 18-year-old grandson of Robert F. Kennedy will have to learn to treat Swift well, unless he wants a song written about him one day.

Are Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen an item?

Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen sitting in a tree... Could it be? Maybe! The pair is currently vacationing in Croatia together.

Anderson Cooper dating Andy Cohen?

Now we understand why we haven't seen Anderson Cooper looking sad over the photos of his longtime boyfriend, Ben Maisani, kissing another dude: He's in Croatia.

But, he's not in Croatia alone. Oh, no: Bravo chief drama instigator Andy Cohen is there too, thanks to some matching photos they posted on their respective Instagram accounts.

"Look who just took the same instagram pic as me @bravoandy," Cooper tweeted, posting a photo of the adorable Cohen.

We approve of this pairing. Apparently, there have been rumors of romance between the two for years. The National Enquirer even did a story on the two in 2011, saying that Cohen has a "man crush on [Cooper] — and pals say he's gunning to snatch the news hunk away from his boyfriend."

Oh, burn: Anderson Cooper mocks Amanda Bynes >>

The Enquirer has a knack for getting these things right so we're willing to bet they're right about this, too.

We're happy to see a different side of Cooper since he came out of the closet in July.

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud," he wrote to The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan. "It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something -- something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true."

Conspiracy alert! Anderson Cooper coming out was planned >>

Now he's out and proud — and we couldn't be happier for him. We're just waiting for the Andy/Andy wedding. Just make sure Kathy Griffin officiates the ceremony.

Mom’s guide to finding the right gym

There are so many options for gyms today. How do you choose the right one for you? These tips will help you find the perfect mom-friendly gym.

How to choose a mom-
friendly gym

There are so many options for gyms today. How do you choose the right one for you? These tips will help you find the perfect mom-friendly gym.

As a mom, joining a gym is a big step toward shedding the baby weight . But how do you choose one?

It's important that you not just take into account the nuts and bolts of the gym, but what else it can offer for you and your family. "Be sure you like the gym and have a good feeling about it. Looking forward to hitting the gym is critical toward long-term results," says Michael Bronco, who has been a gym owner for 20 years.

Do you have the top 10 things you need in your gym bag? >>

What moms look for

The gym experience can be a personal one, but moms are looking for some important things to make the experience worthwhile. "I chose my gym, Fitmix Studio in LA, because I love the owners/trainers, the classes are both fat-blasting and strengthening in one, are 55 minutes long so I can squeeze them into a lunch break. They have many classes scheduled each day so I can usually find one to fit into my schedule, their studio is located in an area that has plenty of parking, and it's close to both my office and my son's preschool," says Samantha Slaven-Bick of Samantha Slaven Publicity.

Expert tips

Audra Murray, owner of Get In Shape For Women in Framingham, Massachusetts, says that busy moms should consider these factors:

  • Location - if it's not convenient, it won't happen
  • Cleanliness - women won't go if the gym smells or equipment isn't cleaned
  • Comfort - do women feel intimidated in the weights area?
  • Accessibility - is the gym overcrowded or are there long waits for equipment?
  • Trainers - the best results are achieved with professional guidance and trainers you feel comfortable with

Indeed, location matters. It will be harder to fit in a gym trip if the gym is 20 minutes away than if it's right down the street. Look for one that is convenient to your home, work and/or your kids' school.

Ease of use is another factor. For Slaven-Bick, being able to schedule classes easily was a big thing too. "They also have a convenient online reservation system, so I can sign up for classes online a month in advance at any time of day or night, so I can plan my classes around meetings, travel, preschool events, etc.," says Slaven-Bick.

For Michelle Posey of Michelle Posey Photography, there were some great bonuses to joining her gym. "I found lots of added bonuses with my gym! It has 25m and 50m pools , one of the best swim teams in the area, an amazing staff of young people teaching swimming lessons at all levels, and a lot of other wonderful family programs. Those include Parents' Night Out programs every month, family-oriented parties, and summer camps that are a great value," says Posey.

What about the kids?

As a mother, you want to work out... but where will the kids go? That's where gym childcare comes into play. "The most important features for me were simple: A fun daycare for my son when he was little and a young cut-off age when he could join and work out with me. My son has been at the gym practically since he was born and now trains with me at the age of 12," says Kristin Shaffer, founder of Figure & Bikini.

When checking out gyms, make sure you take a close look at the childcare facilities and learn about them. You'll want to ask about hours , costs and if there are any monthly plans available. Also find out what kids do while in childcare there.

Social calendar in a rut?

When was the last time you so much as had a cup of coffee with your girlfriends? Do you find yourself making excuses, always revolving around the kids, when you say "no" to invitations from friends? Read on for why spending too much time with your children could not only be hurting your social life, but hurting you, and how you can start making room for adults in your child-centered world.

No more mom excuses!

When was the last time you so much as had a cup of coffee with your girlfriends? Do you find yourself making excuses, always revolving around the kids, when you say "no" to invitations from friends?

Spending too much time with your children could not only be hurting your social life, but hurting you. How can you start making room for adults in your child-centered world?

Don’t let your friendships be casualties

If you’re cringing because you've already lost touch with one too many friends or if some of your friendships are dangerously close to becoming casualties, it’s time to revive them — not just for you — but for your kids.

“One of the first casualties of having kids is usually a woman's social friendships, and that's not a good thing. Of course parenthood is a busy time for everyone, but you will ultimately be a better parent if you take care of yourself first, and part of taking care of yourself should be the goal of staying in contact with your girlfriends,” stresses author and psychotherapist, Christina Steinorth.

“The conundrum. How best to squeeze time in for you? Coffee with a friend, a movie, dare we engage in the idea of a girl's night out? Ever feel like it's all just moving too fast? If we deem relationships with others as a priority, ultimately we'll have more to [put] fuel in the tank to dedicate to our children after all," says life coach, Nancy Sherr.

Why "me time" is essential for your health >>

Moms need female friendships

When you forgo friendships for your kids, you might think this is OK because you’re putting them first. But it's critical that you put yourself first too. “Study after study shows us that social connections are good for our mental and physical health, and as moms, these things are crucial to how we care for our kids. If we're constantly stressed, fatigued or even depressed because we've lost contact with the outside world, in time this is going to take a toll on our parenting capabilities,” says Steinorth.

"Our girlfriends can be a great support..."

Steinorth adds, “Our girlfriends can be a great support when we need someone to talk to and encouragement when we struggle with life's various issues so it's important not to let these friendships slip away.”

Why all moms need good mom friends >>

Being a mom is only part of who you are

Being a mom is wonderful, of course. But is that your sole identity? It's important to remember that it’s really only part of who you are, even if you consider it the best part. “Being a parent is only one fragmented piece of the totality of a woman. Spending too much time with your children, to the detriment of outside interests, only serves to frustrate you, your friends, and surprisingly your children," says April St. John who after 13 years as a stay-at-home mom is now a public speaker and MA resident in marriage and family therapy.

"Ask yourself 'why?' Why do I feel the need to deny myself structured and planned time away from my children? An honest answer to that question may get you one step closer to a balanced point of view,” adds St. John.

Plan a kid-free day

“Plan a spa day, go to the beach, or go for a hike. Do something where you get some one-on-one time with your closest friends on a regular basis — it will be one of the best investments you can make in yourself, which in turn will make you a better parent to your children,” urges Steinorth.

Nancy Sherr adds these ideas for how to stay connected with your friends:

  • Make a standing date with friends on a specific evening every month similar to a book club. This time should be protected from all other appointments/to-dos/obligations.
  • Make a treat out of your away time for the kids. Trade that time for you for a pizza night and make it anticipatory fun for them.
  • Attach coffee time to the end of your workout time to fit in those important connections — maximize time for yourself.

No more mom excuses

If you're notorious for saying you don’t have time to see your friends because you’re too busy with the kids, ask yourself if this is really true. Then make a choice to give yourself a kid-free day. Believe it or not,  these days actually make you a better mom.

“What helped me get back doing the things I loved was to simply schedule it. If I scheduled a massage for example, I would have to pay if I didn’t show up, so it forces me to go. If I told my friend I was going to meet her/him for lunch, I will most likely go since I am already committed,” says Lisa Stein, founder of freelancemom.com.

Remember... selfish is not a dirty word

"Putting your oxygen mask on first results in more confidence as a woman, more patience and playfulness as a mom and more ravishing sensuality as a lover. Selfish is not a dirty word. You'll see the nurturing gifts that regular mom time gives to your family, your friends and your soul,” says Allana Pratt, author of The Missing Handbook to Motherhood.

Teachers going high-tech: Classroom websites

0
0
Teachers have always looked for innovative ways to engage their students in learning. With technology being such a major force in the lives of our school-aged children it seems natural that classrooms would incorporate technology on some level. Many teachers are bringing a new twist to classroom management by creating a website that allows teachers to connect with students and parents. Keep reading to find out how they work and what parents love.

Why use a website?

Teachers who have implemented a classroom website find that it brings much more to their interaction with students than just posting homework assignments or test scores. Students are more engaged and parents feel connected to the learning process. Classroom websites offer a way for students and teachers to interact beyond the regular classroom setting and past dismissal time.

There are several sites teachers can use to set up their own classroom site quickly and easily. Shutterfly, Weebly, TeacherWeb and ClassJump are some of the sites offering a place where teachers can create their own sites and start using them immediately.

Do you think your child's classroom might be making him sick? >>

Extra credit

Student progress and homework assignments are popular uses for a classroom website, but what other options can teachers utilize? David Rusenko is the CEO of Weebly, a site where teachers can easily create their own website for free. “Weebly for Education is a custom-built tool that caters to specific needs in education,” says Rusenko. “It allows teachers to create a classroom site to keep students and parents up to date on progress, homework and curriculum. It also allows teachers to give their students access to create a website and blog in a controlled environment.”

"Many teachers use these blogs or website as the next generation of a written essay or book report."

With the ability to add video and photographs, many teachers use these blogs or website as the next generation of a written essay or book report. Students can create an electronic portfolio of their work, and teachers can control access to these sites by making them public or private.

Parents are fans

How many times has your child come home from a long day at school and didn’t remember to write down the homework assignment? When your child’s teacher uses a classroom website, homework assignments are readily available online, anytime day or night. Teachers can update progress reports and grades frequently, giving students the ability to stay on track.

As students move on to high school courses that involve more extensive projects, the ability to work online is even more useful. Students can access their personal sites or blogs at any time day or night, which is helpful when teenage study schedules become erratic.

Dealing with separation anxiety >>

A teacher’s perspective

Jared Ward is a teacher in the Canyons School District in Sandy, Utah who has helped many teachers in his district set up their own sites with Weebly. “We have been using Weebly for teacher's class websites for a few years now and we love it. I have been working with teachers in my school to help them build class websites using Weebly, and each year we add more and more teachers to the list of those with websites.” Most sites that offer a classroom website make them easy to create in a very short amount of time.

Bottom line

Teachers can increase the level of interaction and learning for their students by setting up a classroom website.

Deciding to be a stay-at-home mom

Making the decision to stay at home with your baby or child is huge. How will your finances deal with the loss of your income? How will you stay sane? Read on for ideas on how to make it work.

Making the decision to stay at home with your baby or child is huge. How will your finances deal with the loss of your income? How will you stay sane? Read on for ideas on how to make it work.

Ditch your work clothes

Deciding to give up your job is no easy task — or maybe it was, once you welcomed your baby home. Here are some terrific ideas on how to make staying at home with your children work out.

Living on one income

Learning to live on one income can be the biggest roadblock to becoming a SAHM. A lot of moms we spoke with brainstormed and came up with ways they could earn some income without sacrificing their time at home with their kids. “We definitely can't afford to live on one income, so I had to find creative ways to make up the difference,” shared Leah, mom of one. “I didn't really want to sacrifice the way I was accustomed to living, so I started finding things to sell on eBay. I'd take the baby thrifting in the wrap, find good stuff and list on eBay while she napped.”

Other moms tightened up their budgets so a lost income wouldn’t be an issue, and made it work. “Had I not been laid off, I probably would have said that we would never be able to make it work financially,” reported Heather from California. “It's amazing how things always manage to work out.”

Adult interaction

A lot of stay-at-home mothers report that one of the challenges to their arrangement is not getting enough adult interaction. “The most stressful thing about being a SAHM is the loss of adult conversation,” shared Lindsay, mother of two. “Most days the only adults I talk to are my fiance and neighbors.”

Amanda, mom of four, had similar issues. “I sometimes feel stretched thin, so I make it a point to get out and go somewhere every couple of days, even if I don’t have any errands to run,” she said. Amy from Wisconsin felt the same. “We go on play dates and join mom groups for fun activities,” she shared.

Staying sane

Stay-at-home moms can feel overwhelmed at times and have to implement strategies to keep their homes running smoothly. Organization and simplicity are two ideas many mom use. “I make simple lunches, use my crock pot for dinners and make lists of things,” explained Ashley, mom of three. “I spot clean all week, keeping up on dishes and I do a load of laundry a day. Then on Sundays I deep clean my whole house and take care of remaining laundry. I always make time every now and then for my husband and I to go on a date or a friend and I to hang out.”

Erika, mother of one, agreed. “Creating a schedule to maximize my mothering time meant giving up my personal time in the evenings, but it is a small sacrifice,” she said. “I had years of putting me first and thinking only of what I wanted. Making my son the center of my world is its own kind of decadence.”

The rewards

The rewards SAHMs report are immeasurable. “I never miss a single milestone,” explained Lindsay. “I get to spend my days helping my children learn and grow up. I see every smile and every tear. I wouldn't change it for the world.”

Erika completely agreed. “The best thing about being home with my son is savoring every minute of his amazing being," she shared. "I never feel like he is growing too fast, nor do I mourn for his younger days. I love watching him unfurl. My greatest gift is the ringside seat I have for this incredible miracle. I am blessed beyond measure.”

Heather may have summed it up best: “I never miss anything, and they never miss me.”

Chasing the Dream: How this mom helps other moms achieve their dreams

When Gayle Bu first became an assistant at the Gap, she helped other moms who worked there with whatever they needed — even when it meant going above the call of duty. Now this working mom is a virtual assistant who makes it her business to see her clients succeed.

Being that driving force

When Gayle Bu first became an assistant at the Gap, she helped other moms who worked there with whatever they needed — even when it meant going above the call of duty.

Now this working mom is a virtual assistant who makes it her business to see her clients succeed.

When one of Gayle Bu's clients needed to hire a personal chef, Bu researched organizations, found candidates and prescreened them. Then she set up personal interviews between her client and the top three candidates. "It took out that entire layer of stress," says Bu. "It’s basically just freeing up their time for whatever is important."

Bu is a virtual assistant who works with 10 clients. Four of them are moms. Even before she became a mother of two, Bu always believed in going above and beyond for her clients. "One of the people I was working for [she] needed to interview nannies. But the interview process was lengthy," says Bu. "My job is to help her. If it means that I have to spend time prescreening nannies or setting up pediatrician appointments so she can spend more time in the boardroom, so be it."

Having a mentor can help you achieve more >>

Freeing clients up

Bu understands how things like setting up appointments and finding contractors can take away from a busy working mom's time — both at work and with her family. So she works hard to take away that stress from them. "They are definitely appreciative and that’s why I keep doing what I do," says Bu.

Beyond personal tasks, Bu also handles a lot of business-related matters for her clients. "My title is virtual assistant so primarily what I do is business oriented. It’s a lot of setting up newsletters and business, etc."

Thinking of getting your own assistant? >>

Being mom

Bu herself is a mom to a 7-year-old and an almost-5-year-old. That's a job she takes very seriously. And with her kids changing schools this year, she's shifted her business to meet their needs. "This year I restructured my business so I can drop them up at the bus at 8:15 and pick them up at 4," says Bu.

"At the end of the day, I close the door and that’s it."

She holds herself to strict working hours and literally shuts down when her work day is over. "I take client calls 9-3:45 on Monday through Thursday," says Bu. "My office is my office. So at the end of the day, I close the door and that’s it."

Of course, like many people these days, Bu says she finds it hard to resist checking her email after hours... just in case. Still, she tries to hold herself to a standard of not dealing with anything that's not urgent when she's off the clock for the day.

Bu tries to keep her time sacred so that she gives her all with whatever she's doing. "When I am with my kids, I am 100 percent with my kids. When I am with my clients, I am 100 percent with my clients," she says.

Still, she also does some multitasking during her brief lunch break. "I genuinely love what I do. The cool thing is that my office is upstairs. I will run downstairs, make lunch quickly, toss the laundry in, toss a chicken in and it’s cool," says Bu. And that frees her up to spend more time with her own family.

MOm advice

"Childcare is key. You need to find good childcare. My thing is in my opinion it’s really difficult to work efficiently when the kids are home. It’s not fun for you, it’s not fun for the kids and it’s not fun for the client," says Bu.

How to balance your relationship with your friendships

0
0
You had your own friends before you met your man. So did he. How about now? Have those friendships stayed intact or are they dwindling? Have these other friendships died out completely? Romantic relationships tend to take center stage, but how much is too much?

Woman having coffee with friend

Some things to think about:

Boys will be boys, and you're not a boy

No matter how long you’ve been together, you’re still going to need a break from the opposite sex. He needs this, too . Make sure he gets time with the dudes -- encourage him to take it, if necessary -- and do the same for yourself. Schedule your girls’ and guys’ nights for the same evening or weekend day to optimize your time. You'll both return to the relationship refreshed, and your friends won't feel discarded.

Don't make everything a date

Invite your single and coupled up friends with you to the movies, drinks or dinner. Make the effort to keep your activities as open as possible. You'll still have time to be exclusive if you're prioritizing a one-on-one date night each week. If you’re in a place where you feel like you don’t have time to see other friends, this is a great remedy.

Make the time

If you're super busy and really want to see a particular friend, schedule the time. People in relationships often have the bad habit of just "hanging out" with their significant other because it takes less effort. Don’t let laziness make your other friends feel forgotten. Even if you invite them to visit while you shop for groceries or go for a jog after work, it’s a step in the right direction.

It takes a village

You two lovebirds can't solve all your problems in a vacuum. Surround yourself with a good community. As fun and exclusive as it can feel to take lots of nights in with just the two of you, this isn’t sustainable. When you have a bad fight, miscommunications or just need a break from each other, community is essential. And not just for the hard times. Community strengthens the two of you as you learn from others around you. And the world still very much needs both of you, even after you’ve found each other.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green movie review: Organically grown!

When Geppetto wanted a son, he carved one out of wood. In this fairy tale for the 21st century, a couple plants their hopes for a child in their garden. Just guess what grows…

The Odd Life of Timothy Green Jennifer Garner

Perfect for: Grade-school daydreamers

Cindy and Jim Green live in the small town of Stanleyville, where both are employed by the town’s pencil factory. When the couple are told they are unable to conceive a baby, both are heartbroken.

Cindy throws herself a pity-party, which Jim crashes with a bottle of wine and a game of "what-if." Instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they indulge in describing all the wonderful qualities their child would have such as a good heart, being a Picasso with a pencil, and the ability to kick the game-winning soccer goal. Jim writes down every delicious attribute of their dream boy.

Together, they put the scraps of paper into a wooden box and bury it in the garden. That night a storm comes and with a crack of thunder, Cindy and Jim awake to find a trail of mud that leads to a real-live boy. His name is Timothy.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green in leaves

Timothy isn’t exactly like other 10-year-old boys, however -- he has green leaves sprouting from his ankles. Not wanting Timothy to be made fun of, his new parents try to hide his flora with long socks. When he forms a friendship with a mysterious young girl, his secret is soon found out. She doesn’t mind, though. Turns out she has a secret of her own.

Meanwhile, the town’s pencil factory is threatening to shut down, which would spell disaster for most of Stanleyville’s residents. But don’t fret, this is a magical story and the tree-child manages to inspire his parents to find a solution that just might save the factory.

Jennifer Garner is beautiful but in very familiar territory as the loving matriarch whose sole purpose in life is to raise a child. Actor Joel Edgerton balances Garner well and, despite being Australian, makes the perfect America dad. CJ Adams is sweet and adorable as Timothy.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green family

Director Peter Hedges also wrote the screenplay based on an idea by producer Ahmet Zappa and succeeds in telling this fable of a film, but in no way reaches the “magic” of his previous films What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and About a Boy.

Bottom line:  The Odd Life of Timothy Green requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. While this may prove more difficult for the older folks in the audience, the youngsters will have no problem enjoying this film that sends a positive message.

Best places to visit for BBQ

0

There are few things in this fine country that cause as much heat or spark as much fiery passion as BBQ. The question of which state or city has the best BBQ has been a topic of serious debate for years. Regardless of what sauce you put on it, what really makes the best BBQ lies in the heart and soul you put into it. That's why, after careful consideration, we chose these three passionate cities as among the top three to get the best finger-lickin', fall-off-the-bone BBQ in the U.S.

BBQ Dish

So where can you find the country's best BBQ? Follow the irresistible smell of slow-cooked BBQ down to Lexington, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; and Kansas City, Missouri! Each of these cities boasts a different kind of BBQ, from vinegar-based sauces to sweet ketchup-based sauces. Grab your bibs, friends, it's time to eat!

Lexington, North Carolina

Lexington, North Carolina

This small town in western North Carolina is the town you go to for mind-blowingly good BBQ. This hidden enclave in the mountains of North Carolina isn't home to a lot of BBQ joints. In fact, there are only eight. But quality certainly reigns over quantity here. Lexington perfected the western Carolina sauce, which is vinegar and ketchup based, and is known countrywide for wood-smoked pork shoulder. The experts at Food & Wine advise you to ask for the "brown bits" when you order. That way you get the melt-in-your-mouth crunchy caramelized bits from the shoulder on the side of your plate.

For good, old-fashioned pork shoulder without any frills or fancy, check out Lexington BBQ off Highway 29-70. This joint won the coveted award of having the best BBQ in the Carolinas by Southern Living. They smoke their shoulders for up to nine hours and serve it to you with just a dash of salt . Another must-visit is Jimmy's BBQ on Cotton Grove Road, which is known for its unique take on traditional Carolina sauce and some to-die-for fried hush puppies and slaw.

Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas

You can't talk BBQ without mentioning Texas, are we right? However, don't think all Texas BBQ is the same. We're pretty sure you could alienate some die-hard BBQ lovers in this state that way. For some of the best slow-cooked beef brisket and spicy hand-cranked sausages in the state, you have to go to Austin. This trendy, music mecca is very serious about their BBQ, with more than 60 restaurants serving it up. Unlike the East Coast, which is known for pork, Austin is best known for its slow-cooked beef brisket. Central Texas-style sauce is typically a mix of tangy and sweet flavors, so you'll find that many of Austin's restaurants feature both tomato and vinegar in their sauces.

If you want the best of the best, head to Franklin BBQ. This popular place is only open until they're sold out, which could be anywhere from one to three hours after they open! Pit-master Aaron Franklin slow cooks his brisket for 14 hours, giving it that melt-in-your-mouth flavor and texture. Another local favorite is Rudy's BBQ, which has three Austin locations. Everyday they serve up real Texas smoked sausage, brisket, ribs, turkey and chicken.

Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City, Missouri

Often called "the BBQ capitol of the world," you can't talk about good BBQ without mentioning Kansas City. Kansas City is best known for the sauce, which is the perfect blend of tartness and thickness . You won't find any tangy vinegar-based sauce here. Unlike Texas, where they prefer to eat their brisket sans sauce, BBQ lovers here thoroughly douse everything from pulled pork to beef short ribs to smoked chicken in the thick, decadent sauce. Most of the delicacies here are slow-smoked on hickory wood, which lends a unique and earthy flavor to all the BBQ. While North Carolina serves up hush puppies and Austin serves up slaw, you'll find scoops of spicy baked beans alongside your Kansas City fare.

Locals and foodies alike say you can't go to Kansas City without stopping at Arthur Bryant's. This legendary BBQ joint has been around since the 1920s and now has three restaurants in the area. They are known for their luscious pork ribs and beef and pork sandwiches, which are slathered in their homemade sauce . Another popular destination is Oklahoma Joe's, which is ironically located inside a gas station. It was rated the top BBQ place in 2011 in Kansas City by Zagat, was just featured in the New York Times and got some rave reviews from food and travel host Anthony Bourdain. If you're at Oklahoma Joe's, order the pulled pork sandwich, the slow-cooked house specialty.

Chalkboards are no longer just for classrooms -- they've managed to find their way into homes. These erasable surfaces are multipurpose and highly functional.

How to...create your own paint

Use them to create a grocery list, document important appointments, or give them to your kids to doodle on. Once you’ve got a board, the only thing missing is the paint!

Store-bought chalkboard paint may be affordable, but the color selection is pretty limited. This is a hands-on way to create your own paint in a color of your choosing.

What you'll need:

  • 1 cup of good-quality flat-finish latex wall paint
  • 2 tablespoons unsanded tile grout
  • Object or surface to paint
  • 150-grit sandpaper
  • Mixing cup or bowl
  • Paint stirrer
  • Paint brush

paintStep 1:

Measure out 1 cup of latex paint in the color of your choice. Pour into a container and add 2 tablespoons of grout . If you’re not a fan of latex paint, acrylic has been used successfully as well.

Step 2:

Tip: If you are experiencing lines in the paint it may be too thick. Try adding a little water to the latex base.

Use a paint stirrer to blend the paint and grout. To break up the clumps, be sure to mix it well. The paint will begin to harden once it’s mixed, and it doesn’t store, so only use what you need.

Step 3:

Apply paint with a paintbrush to the object or surface you plan to paint on. Thoroughly coat the surface to ensure complete coverage. Put a minimum of three coats down in different directions. Let dry.

Step 4:

After the surface has dried, smooth the layers with 150-grit sandpaper. Lightly rub a piece of chalk over the entire surface in order to slate and condition it. Wipe away the residue with a barely damp sponge, and you're all finished. Your custom-color chalkboard paint is ready for use!

5 Tips for shopping in your own closet

You stare hopelessly at the sea of clothes in your closet, convinced that you have absolutely nothing to wear. The result? A “much-needed” shopping spree that you don’t really need. Instead, try shopping in your own closet to rejuvenate your old wardrobe for a new look.
Woman putting on necklace

You stare hopelessly at the sea of clothes in your closet, convinced that you have absolutely nothing to wear. The result? A "much-needed" shopping spree that you don’t really need.

a new style perspective

Instead, try shopping in your own closet to rejuvenate your old wardrobe for a new look.

Recombine, re-wear, remake

Recombining clothes to remake an outfit may seem impossible at times. But creating a new look out of your existing wardrobe is not only easy, but also fun and fashionable. The trick to re-wearing clothing is putting together a variety of outfits, all with a different style, yet still using the same pieces. Your little black dress, for example, is not just restricted to a cocktail party. Toss a blazer over it and wear it out to dinner. Dress it down with a pair of fun flats and a bold belt for a day at the mall, or throw on a pair of tights and boots for a trendier look. The options are infinite.

Not old -- vintage

Whoever said chambray shirts, jean jackets and jean vests would go out of style? It sounds like we all did. So what does it tell you that these denim pieces have made their way back into today’s fashion? Old is new. Incorporating old-school style into your updated look is easy. Take the denim shirt that you swore you’d never wear again, pair it with white skinny jeans and create a fashion statement. The trick is to always mix old pieces with current and trendy pieces.

5 Classic buys for trendy women >>

pop of color shoesIf the shoe fits

Not all of us can have the endless, shoe-filled closet of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw. But we can dream, right? Lovelyish.com gives us eight staple shoes you must have in your closet: nude pumps, black stilettos, closed-toe black kitten heels, a pair of wedges, metallic strappy sandals, flip-flops, shoes that add a pop of color and a pair of sneakers.

The shoes you choose to wear can completely change the look of something as ordinary as jeans. Wear sneakers with your jeans rolled up one day, flip-flops with your jeans rolled down the next and nude pumps to totally rev it up for the evening. Pairing your favorite sundress with flip-flops for a lunch date and then creating a new look with wedges for a summer dinner party is a quick and easy way to switch up your look. Varying the style of shoe for any given piece or outfit multiplies your options and creates a new, hip look each time.

Snap, crackle, pop

Like shoes, accessories can have a major effect on an outfit. The jewelry, scarves, belts and hats in your closet can vamp up any dull outfit. While we all wonder why Kim Kardashian is so famous, we have to admit that she is a pro at adorning her outfits with big earrings, lavish cocktail rings and bold scarves. Her brave style illustrates the way accessorizing changes your look.

A large signature piece of jewelry is one of the easiest ways to remake your outfit. For instance, accessorize your little black dress by adding a bold centerpiece necklace or big earrings. A fun, funky scarf can bolster and change your look; wear one with a white shirt and jeans to add freshness and zest to a classic look. Belts are a necessity not only for jeans but also for cinching up your dresses, sweaters or skirts. The secret to accessories is to add just a little pop of something bright and new to rev up your staple outfits.

Mix & match

Not playing by the typical fashion rules can be fun. Wearing stripes with polka dots used to be a fashion kiss of death but after seeing Michael Kors’ 2012 spring line, it's obvious that mixing patterns is on the cutting edge. According to style agents Janette Ewen and Afiya Francisco, incorporating patterns is a must in your wardrobe. But they do have a few rules. First, partner a hard pattern with something softer . Second, when mixing patterns, don’t bring in too much color -- it can look out of control. Last, avoid dizzy patterns altogether -- they look tacky.

A fun, flirty, polka-dot skirt mixes beautifully with the timeless striped shirt. Patterns add some fun and pizzazz to your wardrobe. But as these style agents advise, “Stick with neutral colors to avoid looking like a crazy person. And definitely no more than two patterns, three colors max.”

So next time you are in need of a new outfit, just open your closet and look at it with a new eyes instead.
