Kendra Wilkinson Wants to 'Stop the Hate' Coming From Her Parenting Critics

Kendra Wilkinson is still fighting mommy shamers and the fight is not getting any fairer. In fact, it seems that Wilkinson has finally been pushed to her limits, posting a lengthy clap back at critics of her parenting skills who still find fault with how she chooses to parent her two children.

More: Insider Claims Kendra Wilkinson & Hank Baskett's Divorce Is an 'Unhealthy Situation'

On Sunday, Wilkinson really made her feelings known and she didn't mince words. Posting a photo of her sweet son, 8-year-old Hank Baskett IV, to her Instagram, Wilkinson wrote a lengthy explanation of why she wants the hate and abuse being volleyed at her to stop immediately.

"Anyone who says anything negative about me as a parent are only going against what my kids see in me," Wilkinson wrote to her followers. "I don’t get the hate at all. We can sit here [and] judge each other as moms [and] parents all day but what good is that doing? The way your kids see [you and] love [you] is all that matters."

She continued a little later on in the caption, "We are all doing the best we can. People have different stories but that doesn’t mean they are bad. It’s a shame that our kids have to grow up in a world of such harsh criticism. It’s only hurting our next generation [and] not helping. Stop the hate and stop the abuse but always encourage love [and] respect people’s ways."

Her closing sentiment is one that really hammers home her desired initiative to spread love, not hate or judgment, in the parenting community: "I love hearing people’s parenting techniques n would never judge someone unless there’s hate involved."

It's not entirely clear what set off Wilkinson's alarm bells to the point that she felt compelled to write a lengthy Instagram post, but if anyone should be the poster child for ending mommy shaming, it's Wilkinson. It's not difficult to imagine that because of Wilkinson's work or events she's going through (she is a former Playboy playmate, currently in the middle of a divorce and very much a free spirit, as seen on her Instagram), others would be quick to cast biased, uneducated judgments on her. As is so often the case with people of put special focus on shaming celebrity moms, we can't know Wilkinson's specific parenting style; we're not with her every second of the day. There's no reason Wilkinson should be facing this kind of undue public criticism.

Kendra Mom Shamers Insta 2

This is definitely not the first time Wilkinson has had to step up to the social media plate and send a strong message to cease and desist to those loud parenting critics, either. Just a few weeks ago, on May 28, Wilkinson posted a photo to her Instagram of herself and her kids goofing around during some R&R time, writing a forceful slam against critics.

"I’m doing the best I can in my life with the cards I’ve been dealt and I will continue to do that," Wilkinson wrote. "I’m hurt because the world I thought was promised to me forever is now coming to an end. I’m not perfect with the way I’m reacting to my pain sometimes but I am getting stronger My kids, mom, dad, friends [and] therapy have been helping," she concluded, pushing back against at any and all negativity coming her way.

Maybe rather than taking a critical approach towards Wilkinson and her parenting, those inclined to judge will instead choose to support her, celebrate her or, at minimum, just back off with the hate. There's no need to kick someone while they're down, especially when it's much more productive to help them.

12 Ways to Make Your Stinky Laundry Smell Better

$

Ever experience pulling laundry out of the machine, excited to take in that glorious smell of freshly dried laundry only to be greeted with a stale and mildewy stench? What the heck?

You might be thinking, "Maybe my clothes were just that dirty." But it might just be that your machine needs a real cleaning. Yep, just like any appliance, it needs a good deep-clean from time to time to keep it working like new — and your laundry smelling as clean as it should. What you might be picking up on your clothes could be a buildup of bacteria and mold in your washer and dryer.

Cleaning your washer and dryer is easier than you think — just follow these 12 easy deodorizing tricks.

More: 12 Cleaning Products That Have a Cult Following

Step 1: Don't delay drying

Don't leave clean laundry in the machine after the load has finished washing — especially not overnight. With a warm, dark environment like a closed washing machine, bacteria and mold both thrive.

Step 2: Avoid the damp

Never put damp laundry in the washing pile. If you can't wash wet or damp clothes and towels immediately, pretreat as needed and then let them dry to keep them from getting smelly.

Step 3: Dry well

Thicker towels and heavy clothing such as jeans take longer to dry, so be sure to dry them thoroughly each time.

Step 4: Get a clothesline

Hang your laundry outside to dry. The sun can help keep mold at bay — just be sure to dry everything completely (even if it means some time in the dryer inside).

Step 5: Soften carefully

Avoid using liquid fabric softener in the washing machine, as some people have experienced a buildup of "gunk" from its use. (Vinegar is said to be a natural fabric softener.) If you do use store-bought fabric softener, dilute the mixture with water before adding it to the machine and realize that the softener can make laundry harder to dry.

Step 6: Try different washing machine additives

There are many different laundry additives you can try — get some suggestions on the next page. But be aware that these measures are guidelines only, and effectiveness will depend on many factors, including the size of the load, water temperature and the amount of water used, the origin of the bad smell, etc.

Next: Nontoxic/natural solutions

A version of this article was originally published in August 2009.

{pageBreak}

Step 7: Nontoxic/natural solutions

Try allowing each load of smelly laundry to presoak for at least 15 minutes in hot water using one of these additives per load to see what (and how much) works best for you: borax (about half a cup), vinegar (three-quarters a cup), lemon juice (about half a cup), baking soda (three-quarters a cup), hydrogen peroxide diluted to 3 percent (half a cup).

Step 8: Commercial cleaning products to try

Try running your stinky wash loads with the addition of one extra cleaning product at a time, such as OdoBan ($18.39 at Amazon), Simple Green ($8.47 at Walmart) or Pine-Sol ($3.79 at Target). Add only one-quarter cup of Pine-Sol — and only if you can handle the scent.

More: Cleaning Hacks for the Woman With Zero Extra Time

Step 9: Common household products — but beware

You can try using one-quarter cup of bleach (add it to the wash water and make sure it has been diluted significantly before adding smelly laundry and never use bleach with any other additive besides regular detergent). Another option is to add half a cup of ammonia to a load of laundry, but be sure not to use it with bleach to avoid creating dangerous fumes.

Step 10: Detergent with a bonus ingredient

Try a commercial laundry detergent, like Febreze ($8.84 at Walmart), that has an odor-removing additive.

Step 11: Go with hot water

Use hot water to wash loads that smell.

Step 12: Wash the washer

To help keep your smelly-laundry problem from returning, you may need to give your clothes washer a deep-clean of its own. Find out how to deodorize your smelly washing machine.

The Real Reason Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez Aren’t Talking About Marriage

Sometimes, the best thing to do for a relationship is to let it simmer over low heat rather than crank it all the way up to boiling. That's what Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are doing, and we totally respect their style. The power couple, who have been together since February 2017, aren't rushing to the altar anytime soon, which Lopez confirmed again on Good Morning America this week.

More: Jennifer Lopez Knows How She Does Not Want to Be Proposed To

"We have to take our time," Lopez said on the June 11th episode. "I've made plenty of mistakes in my past and ... we're mature now. We're grown ups and we're going to take our time and we're going to do things at our own pace. And our life right now is incredibly wonderful. Between our kids and our work we're truly blessed. We don't need anything more right now."

In May, speculation over her new single "El Anillo," (roughly translated to "The Ring" in English) led to questions about whether Lopez was hinting for a proposal from Rodriguez. She told Jimmy Fallon there's "no pressure". In fact, she's been saying that for months. Her appearance on Good Morning America continued to solidify how happy Lopez is just taking things one day at a time.

"The song was written about the two of us, but it's not about two of us," she said. "It's not like I'm like, 'hey! Where's my ring?' No, it's not like that."

Lopez is currently in the midst of a Las Vegas residency where she recently celebrated her 100th show on the Strip. She has fewer than 20 performances to go before the residency ends in late September. Lopez said Rodriguez is particularly fond of the "Jenny from the Block" portion of the show, for obvious reasons. "I wear the number 13," she said, which was Rodriguez's jersey number when he played for the New York Yankees. "The first time he came to see the show, he was like, 'You got Yankee hats up there ... That was always in your show?' And I was like, 'Yeah.' He was like, 'Wow, this is a sign.'"

Maybe he was right. Both Lopez and Rodriguez have been married in the past, and it didn't work out. Taking things slow could be exactly what they both need to make their romance last for the long haul, but we won't lie: we're eager to know if and when these two will tie the knot.

Signs of Cervical Cancer You Might Miss

Before the Pap test became a part of the routine OB-GYN appointment, cervical cancer was one of the leading causes of death of American women according to the American Cancer Society. But even today, the ACS estimates that about 13,240 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed, and about 4,170 people will die from it.

Thankfully, though, advancements like the Pap test and vaccine for the human papillomavirus are helping with early detection and increasing cervical cancer survival rates. But for the other 354 days each year when you're not at the OB-GYN's office, what are some of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer we should look out for? We spoke with Dr. Stephanie V. Blank — a gynecological oncologist and professor of gynecologic oncology in the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and director of Women's Health at Mount Sinai Downtown, Chelsea Center — to find out.

More: Signs of Ovarian Cancer You Might Miss

According to Blank, one of the main signs of cervical cancer is abnormal bleeding — including bleeding after sex and bleeding between menstrual periods. If you're experiencing these symptoms, she says you should see a doctor for an exam. However, "if it comes monthly at a predictable time," it is likely related to menstruation, she adds. The ACS lists other symptoms, such as bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, trouble eating or feeling full quickly and frequent or urgent urination.

The first step in the process of getting a cervical cancer diagnosis is through a Pap smear, which Blank explains is used to determine if the person needs a closer inspection of their cervix and a biopsy. The actual diagnosis happens through the biopsy — sampling a piece of tissue.

MoreIs Christina Applegate's Cancer-Preventing Surgery a Good Option?

The people most at risk for cervical cancer are smokers, anyone who is immunocompromised, people with a history of high-risk HPV and high-grade dysplasia, as well as people who do not practice safer sex, Blank says, emphasizing that the best prevention for cervical cancer is the HPV vaccine.

The HPV vaccine is covered by health insurance until age 21 in boys and age 26 in girls, Dr. Susan Maples tells SheKnows. "Contrary to what you may have heard, if you are beyond the covered benefit age for vaccination, you can still act as your own health advocate," she adds. "If you’re willing to spend $200 to $300 out of pocket, you can get vaccinated at a local pharmacy."

The treatment for cervical cancer varies based on the stage — or how far the disease has spread, Blank explains. "If it is early, it can be treated with a cone biopsy or a hysterectomy," she says. "If it is a little further along, it is treated with a radical hysterectomy. If further along, chemotherapy and radiation are used."

So, what can we do to help prevent cervical cancer? First, Blank stresses the importance of getting all doses of the HPV vaccine "prior to sexual debut." In addition to that, using condoms during penetrative sex, refraining from smoking, eating healthily, sleeping enough and taking care of yourself are all a good idea — both for helping to prevent cervical cancer and for health in general.

Everyone’s Loving Jada Pinkett Smith’s Honest Approach to Masturbation

Just when we thought we couldn't love Jada Pinkett Smith's Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk more than we already do, she's gone and done it again. In the latest episode, Pinkett Smith is joined by her regular costars, mother Adrienne Banfield Norris and daughter Willow Smith. The trio of women got real about sex and masturbation, and there were no holds barred, with Pinkett Smith candidly telling her daughter all about her own youthful experiences.

Public reaction to the episode has been positive, with people chiming in to cheer on the ladies as they cover everything from how to talk about sex to use of the word "whore." But the best moment may have been when Pinkett Smith revealed that her grandmother was the one to teach her about masturbation. “I came into [knowledge about sex] differently. My grandmother taught me about self-pleasuring because she wanted me to know that that pleasure was from me,” she emphasizes. “She didn’t want me to fall into the hands of a man and if he gave me pleasure to think that that was him. And she taught me at 9 [years old].”

And she didn’t stop there. “I think by your age, I gave myself multiples first. Multiple orgasms. I was really into it at one point. Just because I was in an exploration state and I was abstaining from men,” the actor told her daughter.

Viewers loved it.

“Excellent episode I love how open Jada is with her kids and her mother” responded one Facebook viewer.

Another commented, “So many of us refuse to be this transparent with our daughters. They NEED it! Hell we needed it.”

Even a member of the clergy joined in, saying, “This was outstanding being a pastor I opened my mind and spirit to receive and learn, you guys are very open-minded with each other and I get it, so many mothers and daughters need to engage in the impact you share."

The episode also highlighted the way that repressing honest talk about sex can be damaging, as Banfield Norris spoke of her own youth when she was told, “[B]oys were dirty, don’t let them put their tongues in your mouth […] so everything was from a very negative [place] — to scare me.”

Some viewers shared the way the episode was challenging them and their own discomforts, “I'm so primitive. For some reason, I still felt an uncomfortableness watching and listening to how open and boundary-less the conversation was with her Grammy and mom. I KNOW this is a much better approach especially in this day and time with the many information resources available to young people, I'm just acknowledging that I still have that old school energy/taboo from my mom and old folks from back in day. I have to evolve in this area,” admitted one watcher.

Kudos to all the Red Table ladies for their willingness to push through any mental barriers to be honest with one another. We could almost see their bonds strengthening the longer they talked. Hopefully, we can all walk away from this feeling empowered and determined to get real in our own lives.

The Problem With What (& How) We Eat in the Office

$
0
0

The office can be a dangerous place for people trying to eat healthily. Even if you're lucky enough to work somewhere that provides free snacks, when you go to the communal fridge to grab a mini-tub of hummus and some baby carrots at 3 p.m., you might find yourself reaching for a bag of chips to dip instead. After all, you've worked hard today, right? And you've almost made it through the entire day. You deserve a reward, don't you?

That has definitely been my own logic on more than one occasion. And then there are the mandatory celebrations of birthdays, retirements and holidays. Are you really going to turn down that cupcake for Janet's birthday and look like you're not game for celebrating her life? (Especially when you find out they come from the good bakery.) Probably not.

As it turns out, these office eating challenges aren't unusual; in fact, a large study presented at the American Society for Nutrition's annual meeting found that the foods we eat at work tend to contain high amounts of sodium and refined grains and not much in the way of whole grains and fruit.

More: Eat These Foods to Boost Your Immune System

"To our knowledge, this is the first national study to look at the food people get at work," Stephen Onufrak, epidemiologist in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement. "Our results suggest that the foods people get from work do not align well with the recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans."

The study looked at the workplace eating habits of 5,222 employees from across the U.S. and included the food or beverages they purchased at work from vending machines or cafeterias or that were provided for free in common areas, at meetings or at worksite social events. Nearly one-quarter of participants ate food they procured at the workplace at least once a week, adding up to almost 1,300 calories each week.

Somewhat predictably, the foods we munch on at our desks tend to be high in empty calories (the bad kind that come from solid fats and/or added sugars). And it's not just trips to the vending machine in the hallway — more than 70 percent of these empty calories are coming from the food we get for free.

What can be done?

Predictably, the study's authors call on employers to provide healthier options that are also appealing for their employees. They also suggested implementing workplace wellness initiatives to help everyone get on the same page about healthy eating.

More: We Know Fiber Is Good for Us — Here's Why & What to Eat

"Worksite wellness programs have the potential to reach millions of working Americans and have been shown to be effective at changing health behaviors among employees, reducing employee absenteeism and reducing health care costs," Onufrak said in the statement. "We hope that the results of our research will help increase healthy food options at worksites in the US."

Ultimately, though, we're all grown-ups here, and it's up to us to decide whether to reach for that banana or pack of peanut butter cookies when we hit the midafternoon slump.

Home Improvement Mistakes That Could Be Costing You a Lot of Money

$

Starting a home renovation is an exciting prospect for new homeowners. You’re in a new space and looking at everything with fresh eyes, ready to retile that bathroom and revamp the back patio. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the idea of new kitchen cabinets, sleek light fixtures or gutting that pink-tiled '70s master bathroom, but it’s important to take your time with home-improvement decisions and make smart choices to avoid wasting time and money.

More: A Look Inside the Most Expensive Tiny Homes on the Market

Whether you’re planning a full-scale kitchen renovation or just adding a fresh coat of paint to your bedroom walls, here are some mistakes to avoid.

1. You fall in love with an expensive design

According to trained architect and founder and CEO of Sweeten Jean Brownhill this is one of the biggest and most common mistakes. Brownhill explains, "If you see a lot of lines — moldings, wainscoting, herringbone floors, etc. — it’s expensive. The converse is also true: a super-modern space with no lines (floating walls, no base molding or crown molding, everything looking straight and beautiful) is also expensive. The only way you'd be able to achieve the dream photo is to bust your budget. Even if you are determined to get the materials for less money, you still need high-quality labor to install it. Some looks you can't get for less."

2. You don't hire a true professional

Watching a few YouTube videos on rewiring the electrical in your home does not make you an electrician. "You should apply the same logic to any professional you’d use in your life to hiring a general contractor," Brownhill tells us. "You wouldn't go to a doctor and tell yourself, 'Oh, it will be fine. He doesn't document his work. He's willing to do this without a license.' Accepting that super-cheap bid could lead to an unlicensed contractor being unable to obtain proper permit. Plus, you're responsible for the cost of repairs if the work doesn't meet building codes, which is especially important in resale."

For smaller jobs like furniture assembly, painting or mounting shelves on the wall, consider using a service like Task Rabbit, which offers qualified freelance ‘taskers’ to do an array of home projects. More and more interior designers are offering their services online for a fraction of the cost and time it takes to work with a traditional decorator. Check out companies like DecoristHavenly and Homepolish, which all offer online design services for any budget.

3. You try to cut corners by buying cheap materials

The "you get what you pay for" maxim holds true for home renovations. Sure, the flooring that costs $3 less per square foot sounds great for your wallet. But when that flooring wears out, cracks and needs to be replaced a year later, you'll be wishing you had invested in quality materials from the start.

There are some ways you can still cut back on costs without skimping on quality. One of our favorite ideas is to try using a remnant piece of stone, like granite or quartz, for smaller surfaces like bathroom counters instead of a full slab.

4. You choose a trendy design

That farmhouse sink and open shelving might look great now, but will they withstand the test of time and, more important, improve the resale value of your home? This is especially true for kitchens and bathrooms. Remodeling your kitchen can be one of the most expensive home improvements you can make, so it makes more sense to go with one or two trendy elements you love, like a built-in sink or flat-front cabinetry, instead of making the whole thing a bold, trendy resale nightmare that you may tire of in a few years.

5. The project never ends

It's easy to get carried away with a home renovation. Brownhill explains, "Create a punch list, and when it's done, let your general contractor go. Professionalism on both sides is needed. Otherwise, you could wind up paying a premium through change orders for 'a few other little things' you want him to fix. These little fixes can really add up."

Prince George Plays With a Toy Gun, & the Internet Loses Its Mind

So, apparently, little Prince George — son of Duchess Catherine of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) and Prince William — is deeply interested in law enforcement, which we think is pretty darn cute. He does have a rather serious demeanor, like his father, and would likely make a very good officer. But his play became public fodder when he was spotted toting a toy gun and pretend handcuffs. The event the royals were attending was innocent enough (and posh AF): The duchess relaxed with a friend and watched her husband compete in the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy match in Gloucester, England, this Sunday while Prince George and Princess Charlotte romped in the grass. Let the royal-shaming begin.

Oh, it's big news.

This perspective is inarguably a sobering one. It's true that the future King of England is at no risk when he's playing with a toy gun, but it's not the same situation for all children.

But not everyone was horrified by Prince George's choice of toy.

Prince George, 4, was clearly enjoying his plastic set of SWAT toys, which also included (*gulp*) a faux knife. This is the kid who only wanted a toy police car for Christmas, so we're not surprised he looked positively delighted with his toy set.

However, context is everything, culturally speaking. While levels of gun violence in the U.S. continue to soar, the U.K.'s dominant political issues no longer include gun control, as handguns were banned in Britain after a horrific 1996 mass shooting at an elementary school. Not to mention even more powerful weapons (like ones widely available in the U.S.) have been banned in the U.K. far prior to the 1996 shooting, as reported by CNBC.

Is George setting a bad example? There are certainly deaths linked to fake and toy guns. There's no denying this. How realistic is too realistic when it comes to toy guns? Should they even exist?

Ross joked in the caption, "So apparently I have a side hustle… and it’s doing pretty well!”

This Melon Recall Is Ruining Our Summer Snacking

Your fruit salad may be trying to kill you. That's right, folks — brace yourselves for news of yet another recall caused by a salmonella contamination that's getting people sick across the country.

Caito Foods of Indianapolis, Indiana, is recalling precut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fresh-cut fruit medley containers that have been exposed to salmonella adelaide.

More: 21 Simple Summer Punches to Serve Guests (or Sip Solo)

The fresh-cut fruits were sold in clear plastic clamshell containers at Costco, JayC, Kroger, Pay Less Super Markets, Owen’s Market, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon. They were distributed to eight states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

So far, more than 60 people have fallen ill after eating these products, and 31 have required hospitalization, though this number may grow — the Centers for Disease Control estimates that it can take two to four weeks for them to receive information on illnesses related to the recall. The youngest victim was less than 1 year old, while the oldest was 97. Thankfully, no one has died, though the very young and very old are especially susceptible to having a severe reaction to the infection.

More: 10 of the Best International Cities for Food

The most common symptoms people experience if they've been exposed to salmonella are diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. It can last for four to seven days and in extreme cases can lead to hospitalization and death. If you experience any of these symptoms and have eaten precut melon in any of the states included in the recall, head to the doctor's office.

Summer without melon is just too sad to contemplate, and luckily, the recall only applies to the precut melon sold in the stores listed. That means you can still buy a whole melon and cut it up yourself if you want something fruity and refreshing to sustain you when it gets hot outside.

The Best Summer Movies Based on True Stories

$

It was the romantic poet Lord Byron who once wrote, "Truth is always strange, stranger than fiction." This is still true when it comes to movies. This summer, we have a chance to take a break from the usual superhero flicks and explore some of these strange, true stories at the cinema.

The most exciting part of movies made from true stories is trying to wrap our heads around how the real person survived or made it through a difficult ordeal. Hunting Nazis, surviving a massive hurricane while at sea and rescuing a baby elephant in a time of war are just some of the extraordinary things real people experienced and lived to tell about. Watching their stories can inspire us and make us look at the challenges in our own lives in a new light.

Here are our favorite summer films based on true stories.

1. Adrift, in theaters now

Avid sailors Tami Oldham (Shailene Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin) head out to the open seas for the adventure of a lifetime. Unknowingly, they sail straight into one of the most disastrous hurricanes in history. When Richard is badly injured in the storm and their boat is nearly destroyed, Tami is in charge of their survival. This story is so powerful because it's about a young woman who must reach deep inside to find the courage and grit to save not only herself but also the love of her life. Tami is a role model for women everywhere.

2. Zoo, in theaters now

In Belfast, Northern Ireland, during World War II, 10-year-old Tom (Art Parkinson) teams up with his misfit friends to rescue a baby elephant in danger of being killed at the zoo. We love this story because it's told from the point of view of a child who knows nothing about Nazis and war, only that he wants to save the innocent animal he loves.

3. Tag, June 15

Every year, a group of friends spends the month of May playing a savage, hilarious game of tag that involves traveling across the entire country. Starring Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner and Nora Dunn, this movie promises to take friendship to a whole new level. We love this story because it proves that adults can still have fun, engage in play and keep excitement in their lives.

4. China Salesman, June 15

An ordinary cell phone salesman from China, Yan Jian (Dong-xue Li), finds himself in Africa, where he's bidding on the first technology to allow cell phone service on the continent. Yan unwittingly gets in the middle of a corruption scandal with a mercenary (Steven Seagal) and a local tribesman (Mike Tyson) while the country is on the verge of civil war. We like this movie because it's heavy on explosions and includes an awesome eight-minute action sequence with Seagal and Tyson, making it one of the most intense films of the summer.

5. Woman Walks Ahead, June 29

This movie is based on the life of Caroline Weldon (Jessica Chastain), a portrait painter in the 1800s who goes on a journey to paint the famous Chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes). This movie is a fascinating exploration of two very different cultures coming together at a time when racial tensions in America were high. We love seeing two people from totally different backgrounds becoming friends.

6. BlacKkKlansman, Aug. 10

In the early 1970s, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first Black detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Wanting to end extreme hate and violence, Ron works with his partner, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), to infiltrate and bring down the Ku Klux Klan. We're excited about this movie because it's directed by Spike Lee, who's a master of telling stories about the Black experience in America.

7. Operation Finale, Sept. 14

Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann (Ben Kingsley) was the architect of the Holocaust, overseeing the transportation and death of millions of Jews. Fifteen years after the war, two special agents (Oscar Isaacson, Melanie Laurent) travel to South America to find Eichmann and bring him to justice. This movie is a great example of two people risking their own lives to fight for what's right in the face of evil.

8. Boy Erased, Sept. 28

When Jared (Lucas Hedges) comes out to his family as gay, his parents (Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe) force him into a gay conversion program at their church. We’re excited for this film because it has two big stars (Kidman and Crowe) who aren't afraid to tackle LGBTQ issues and make a statement for equality.

Alicia Silverstone Unfazed That Son Bear Blu Tried to French-Kiss Her

I guess we all wanted to make out with Alicia Silverstone after seeing 1995 cult classic Clueless, so maybe it's not that weird that her 7-year-old son, Bear Blu, tried to French-kiss his mom the first time he saw the movie. I mean, OK, it's still kind of weird and borderline Oedipal, but maybe that's Hollywood, man.

Silverstone was a little worried about taking her son to see Clueless, she told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show this Monday, because she was worried it might not be appropriate for his age. But she gave in and "took him to see it because it's at the LA cemetery, where they show it for 4,000 people... on a huge screen." Silverstone also joked to Colbert, "It was very romantic to be laying down with pillows and rosé." Um. Alicia. Sweetie. You're not helping things.

That's when Silverstone dropped the F bomb: French kiss. She told Colbert, "He loved [Clueless], but the one thing he took away from it, aside from all the things I was worried about, was he kept trying to French-kiss me afterward." Silverstone said Bear's attempt to romance her was "very sweet."

An obviously surprised Colbert inquired, "And you said, 'That is not appropriate?'"

"I just kept my mouth closed!" was Silverstone's response. "That's what I did. And I just giggled."

Gal Gadot Is Preparing for a Movie, & It’s Not Wonder Woman 2

Good news from Hollywood this week: We will have more Gal Gadot in our future. The Wonder Woman star inked a deal to star in an action comedy called Red Notice, an original story from the writer and director of Central Intelligence and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Rawson Marshall Thurber.

Thankfully, Red Notice will not mess with preparations for Wonder Woman 2. According to Deadline, filming on Red Notice is set to begin in April 2019, well after WW2 is wrapped. Deadline also reports that the film will bring Gadot together with action hero du jour Dwayne Johnson and a third, still-uncast costar. Red Notice is being described by Deadline as a “globe-trotting, action-comedy, heist thriller.”

It seems reminiscent of Gadot’s comedy turn in Keeping Up With the Joneses, which saw her kicking butt alongside Jon Hamm as an undercover operative. Best of all, Gadot's Red Notice character is described as a “brilliant and mysterious figure in the art world.” Color us very intrigued!

More: Gal Gadot's Daughter's Favorite Superhero Is... not Wonder Woman

Gadot has experience filming with Johnson, so you can count on a good rapport already being in place when they get together. Previously, they both appeared in a couple of the Fast & Furious franchise films. At the time, she didn’t have the star power she does now, so this movie will arguably team up two of the most bankable actors in Hollywood.

Business Insider reported that Johnson is asking $22 million for Red Notice, plus a portion of the film’s profits. There’s no news yet on how much Gadot will earn for Notice, but her star is certainly on the rise, and she likely has the cachet to ask for a hefty salary as well. With equal pay such a hot topic in Hollywood, it’s safe to assume that came into consideration during negotiations; let's hope this pans out in Gadot's favor.

Though Gadot has been acting for a while now, it was her strong yet relatable portrayal of Wonder Woman that made her a proven action star, and she is an actor that fans can cheer on no matter what project she tackles — although her IMDb résumé tells us she's adept at quite a lot of genres.

You can put Wonder Woman 2 on your calendar for November 1, 2019, and look for Red Notice on June 12, 2020.

All the Other Conditions (Besides Lyme Disease) Caused by Ticks

Ticks are gross. There's no question about it. It's creepy to see one and worse yet to find one actually attached to your body, sucking your blood and possibly transmitting a serious disease in the meantime. Dr. Aileen M. Marty, a physician and head of the Florida International University's Health Travel Medicine Program, tells SheKnows that while Lyme disease is by far the most commonly diagnosed tick-transmitted disease, there are quite a few others that humans can be exposed to. Here are some of the other unhappy consequences that can pop up after you've been feasted upon by one of these little jerks.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is caused by a bacterium called Rickettsia rickettsii, Marty explains. Symptoms of RMSF can include fever, headache and spotted rash, and it can be deadly if not caught early and treated with the correct antibiotics (usually doxycycline). It's spread by the American dog tick and the Rocky Mountain wood tick, and in parts of the Southwest, the brown dog tick.

Ehrlichiosis

Ehrlichiosis is a disease caused by a specific type of bacteria and is most commonly transmitted by the lone star tick according to the Centers for Disease Control. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and muscle aches, which pop up a week or two after a tick bite. Again, doxycycline is the antibiotic most commonly used to fight this illness.

Anaplasmosis

Anaplasmosis is transmitted most commonly by the black-legged tick as well as the Western black-legged tick according to the CDC. Similar to ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, chills and muscle aches and also takes one or two weeks to develop. Doxycycline is the preferred first-line treatment.

Heartland virus

The Heartland virus has been found in, you guessed it, the Midwest as well as several Southern states. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and diarrhea according to the CDC. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for the actual virus, as antibiotics don't treat viruses, but it's possible that medications can help treat symptoms.

Babesiosis

Babesiosis is an illness caused by microscopic parasites that are transmitted by black-legged ticks (also known as deer ticks) and is generally found in the Northeast and upper Midwest according to the CDC. These parasites are generally transmitted by ticks in the nymph stage, meaning they're about the size of a poppy seed and are easily overlooked. It can be treated, and its symptoms are similar to other tick-borne diseases and include fever, chills, sweats, headache, body aches, fatigue, nausea or loss of appetite.

Red meat allergy

It's not all bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause problems in humans who suffer from a tick bite. Do you love hamburgers and barbacoa beef tacos? It'd be a huge bummer, and possibly life-threatening, if you develop a red meat allergy after a tick bite, which can totally happen, says Dr. Purvi Parikh, allergist and immunologist at the Allergy & Asthma Network.

The explanation is pretty science-y, but it boils down to a tick (generally a lone star tick) that has previously feasted upon a cow, then takes up residence on a human. "The human body then develops an allergy to the cow carbohydrate, and thus, this can cause a severe delayed reaction to beef and other meats," she explains.

Parikh notes that symptoms are the same as other allergies, but it's generally delayed. Symptoms include hives, vomiting, shortness of breath and dizziness and can pop up three to four hours after consuming red meat. She says it's particularly noteworthy if you live in an area where there are tons of ticks and have suffered from a tick bite and explains that it's possible the allergy will fade, but you'll have to see a board-certified allergist to monitor the allergy every few years to see if it's decreasing. As far as treatment, Parikh recommends complete avoidance, but also explains you'll likely have to have an EpiPen on hand in case of exposure.

Avoiding tick bites

Of course, the easiest way to eliminate the possibility of experiencing any of the above tick-borne diseases (and unfortunately, there are quite a few more than listed here) is to never get bitten by a tick. The CDC recommends a few steps for prevention, including treating clothing and gear with products that contain 0.5 percent permethrin, which can actually last through several washings. Additionally, treat any exposed skin with insect repellent (here's a handy guide from the EPA on finding a good one). Walk on trails, and avoid tall grasses and leaf litter. Thoroughly check your clothes and your body for ticks after being outdoors.

If you've experienced a tick bite and begin experiencing any of the above-mentioned symptoms within a week or two, the CDC suggests visiting your doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious illness. And in the meantime, take steps to avoid getting a tick bite in the first place and enjoy your time outdoors by taking precautions.

The One Tree Hill Cast Might Actually Surprise Us With a Reunion

It is not nice to mess with fans' hearts. But that is just what the cast of One Tree Hill did when they trolled their followers on Tuesday with a set of Instagram photos taken behind the scenes of some kind of secret project, then immediately took the posts down. Like, really? Really?! That's just cruel.

More: 25 Pictures of the One Tree Hill Cast That Will Give You All the Feels

As reported by Bustle, the photos included OTH stars Hilarie Burton, Danneel Ackles, Robert Buckley and Antwon Tanner, and it seems like the message they were trying to convey is pretty clear: There’s a reunion coming.

Even though the stars took the posts down within minutes of being posted, TV Guide managed to capture screenshots of them. The photos were all selfies that showed the costars in the background, apparently working diligently on something.

Burton captioned her post, “Behind the scenes…..#christmas2018.”

Ackles simply wrote, “Hmmmmmm… #christmas2018.”

Buckley’s post featured an additional person who can only be seen from the neck down, and the caption, “Always great making new friends on set. #christmas2018.”

But it was Tanner’s post that seemed to confirm speculation. His caption read, “On set working with some oldies but goodies. #christmas2018 new project coming soon.”

So here's the question... why post the photos with those specific captions just to take them down? If we had to guess, this is some viral marketing effort to stir up interest in a reunion before it's announced. And it's working.

So it’s safe to say whatever is being planned, the internet is here for it.

There’s no way to tell if this project might be with the entire cast since series stars Chad Michael Murray, Bethany Joy Lenz, James Lafferty and Sophia Bush aren’t present in the pics, but it could also just be a day when the entire cast wasn’t needed on set. Or it could be an entirely new project that has nothing to do with OTH. Cast members like Tyler Hilton have spoken up before about being in favor of a reunion, though Sophia Bush did point out how hard it would be to get everyone's schedules to align.

If there were ever a time for a beloved series like OTH to be revived, it’s now. Reboots and reunions have been so trendy, it’s hard not to find one when you turn on the TV. There have been major successes like Gilmore Girls and One Day at a Time.

The good news is fans don’t have long to wait. #Christmas2018 will be here before we know it.

As a Poor, Work-From-Home Mom, I Hate Summer ‘Break’

$

0

It’s noon. So far today, I've fetched approximately four packs of fruit snacks, two bowls of pretzels, one strawberry bar, a bowl of blueberries and two cups of juice. My laptop is booted up and ready for me to sit down and start writing — but as soon as I get comfortable, my son needs me to fetch something else. As I cut strawberries, I wonder how many more times I’ll have to do this exact thing this week. We’re a few weeks into summer "vacation," and I’m already very over it.

"How many days until school starts again?" I ask myself as I sit back down at my computer, afraid to start typing for fear of being asked for something else.

More: The Thing No One Tells You About Being a Poor Single Mom

The answer is: simply too many. My son got out of school the first week of May, and he won’t go back until sometime in August. That’s a solid three months of being stuck at home with a 4-year-old day in and day out. As a single mom who works from home, I don’t get a summer "break" — or even a "break" during the day. At all. I squeeze writing in between fetching snacks, mediating tantrums and arguing over being able to watch YouTube on the television versus my phone. If I’m lucky, I remember to feed myself at some point during one of my son's 30 snack breaks.

As I work, my son builds elaborate designs for his train tracks. He does it mostly on his own, which is great — until he gets stuck and cries for me to come and fix it. I then lose two would-be work minutes calming him down and eight rebuilding the track. Then he watches a Thomas and Friends movie while I make some decent headway with my writing. Next comes two minutes of arguing about what my son is going to watch next.

“Can you please just decide so I can get back to work?” I huff, waving the remote for emphasis. Thank God for television. Finally, he decides, and I get back to work — and then my son requests chocolate. I groan as I schlep back into the kitchen and pluck exactly four small chocolates out of the container on top of the fridge. (They can’t be on the counter anymore because he’s tall enough to reach them and will grab them without permission.)

I wonder how many words I’ll get to write this time before my son needs me for something else. As I type, I begin to wonder what activities we can do this week. I know I’ll need to go grocery shopping, so that’ll take up some time. Even though it bores me to tears, we can spend at least one afternoon at the local playground. But that still leaves... so many hours to kill.

More:  4 Ways to Master Being a Single Working Mom

“Why don’t you just put him in summer camp or day care?” you ask?

Because that costs money I don’t have, that's why. I make a pretty decent living as a freelancer, but not enough to afford all-day childcare. As it is, I work from home to avoid having to pay outrageous day care costs. And when I looked into summer camp, I was shocked. Approximately six weeks of summer camp is equal to my month’s rent. I simply can’t afford that, even with financial help from my son's dad. And since he’s only 4, there aren't many camp options for us even if we could afford it.

To me, summer days feel endless. After about two hours of "work," I’ve finished enough to feel comfortable stopping. I beg my son to put on real clothes and get his backpack together to go to the playground.

As we walk to the playground, I can see the summer stretching out endlessly before us. What on earth are we going to do all summer? I’m trying to plan a trip back east to visit our family, but for the two of us to fly round-trip is ridiculously expensive. Los Angeles is pretty spread out; I don’t drive, and taking Ubers to places gets expensive very quickly. Universal Studios would cost me way too much just on admission, and my kid would probably lose interest and want to go home after an hour. Preschool-age activities at our local library usually happen during the hours I need to be working.

After a particularly grueling day and then an even worse night trying to get my son to go to bed, I sent his father a message to let him know I need him to help me get his son through the summer. "I need a break," I wrote. My house is in shambles all the time; it’s impossible to clean the floors while my kid is running around offering to help me sweep. I want to try to exercise a couple of times a week, if only just to get out of the house. I don't have money.

My son's dad agreed to take him two evenings a week — but I’m still stuck with him during working hours. It’s hard. It’s really hard. The constant division of my attention makes me feel like I’m not giving anything — my son or my work — my all, not doing my best at my job or being a mom.

More: What Being a Single Mom for One Month Taught Me About Parenting

I want to be able to enjoy these years with my son. I know they grow so fast. But the reality is, if I’m not working, we will not have a roof over our heads or food to eat. Summer is absolute hell for poor parents, and I don’t think we put enough emphasis on the people we’re underserving.

There’s Major Backlash to Kevin Spacey’s New Movie Coming Out in July

A film starring Kevin Spacey that was shot more than two years ago is being released next month despite the accusations made against Spacey in the #MeToo era.

Billionaire Boys Club (doesn't the title say it all?) was one of the projects Spacey was working on when the allegations against him first surfaced, and if it's not telling enough, the filmmakers waited to release the trailer just a short four weeks ahead of the film's actual debut.

Did they hope Spacey's involvement would slip under the radar? That’s what one of Spacey's costars hopes will happen. Richard Dupont told Page Six, “People have such short memories. And Spacey is almost unrecognizable in a beard and glasses.” We're just going to go out on a limb here and say the implication that a sexual predator is OK when disguised is, well, not OK. At all.

Other projects that included Spacey made tough decisions once the accusations against him rolled out. House of Cards fired him. The film All the Money in the World, which, like Billionaire Boys Club, was already shot, replaced him. The director of that film, Ridley Scott, told Entertainment Weekly, “I sat and thought about it and realized, we cannot. You can’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film. We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of these other people.”

On-set photos of House of Cards were also released today, so social media has had Spacey on its mind, and the public reaction has been strong. Many people are decidedly against seeing him on-screen in any role.

No doubt Billionaire Boys Club producers will be monitoring the public's reactions as time goes on. Because the only thing more expensive than shooting a movie and having it sit on the shelf is marketing and releasing a movie only to have it die in theaters.

Will they choose to pull it? Should they pull it? It’s hard to say, but whatever their decision, it could set a precedent for anyone else who has faced similar accusations.

Ryan Murphy Teases a Big Cast Reunion for American Horror Story Season 8

Production on American Horror Story Season 8 is still in the early stages and already, series creator Ryan Murphy is dropping some super tantalizing details about what fans can expect. After the eerily relevant Season 7, Cult, which was all about a titular cult terrorizing a queer woman in the immediate aftermath of President Donald Trump's election, it looks like Murphy is pushing the boundaries further for the next installment in television's most exciting anthology series.

More: Ryan Murphy & Sarah Paulson Are Teaming Up Again for a Whole New Show

While chatting with Entertainment Weekly recently, Murphy teased some telling details about both the casting and the vibe of the next season. Word to the wise: prepare yourself because things are going to get real interesting, real fast.

"It’s a season unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it. There’s a huge thing that happens in episode five," Murphy tells EW. "You will see so many fan favorites return that you’ll feel like it’s The Love Boat. It’s a very high concept." Excuse us, but a high concept season that's going to bring back tons of characters we know from previous seasons in both recurring roles and cameos? Yes, please!

Now, as to which AHS alumni could specifically be coming back, Murphy remained mum. While The Wrap confirmed that AHS regulars Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Eichner, Adina Porter, Evan Peters and Leslie Grossman will be returning, it's been speculated that regulars like Angela Bassett, Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton could also be coming back. The jury is still out on Jessica Lange, but God, we can only hope. Interestingly, Joan Collins has also been confirmed for Season 8, making her the newest addition to the AHS troupe, and The Wrap reported that rumors were going around about Anjelica Huston possibly joining for Season 8, but her representatives didn't confirm that.

We also know that in addition to being a high concept season (which could be anything from heavy stylization to unique storytelling elements like time jumping or breaking the fourth wall), Season 8 will take place 18 months from the day some of the first details were confirmed, back on April 6, 2018. That means that, theoretically, Season 8 begins on October 6, 2019, which one Reddit user noticed was the anniversary date of a speech former president John F. Kennedy made about constructing bomb shelters, leading them to believe that AHS Season 8 would be titled Radioactive or something similar and be focused on nuclear war.
