Justin Timberlake Apologized for Insulting Mandy Moore

Being an awkward teenager is apparently an experience no one can escape — not even celebrities. On Wednesday, Mandy Moore went on SiriusXM's The Howard Stern Show, where he asked her about a story she first shared on the Hallmark Channel's Home & Family in 2015 involving her teenage self, teenage Justin Timberlake and one serious foot-in-mouth moment from the latter.

When Moore first exploded onto the music scene at just 15 years old (almost 20 years ago), she went on tour with 'NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys — which was probably pretty intense for someone who was already a big fan of both bands. Apparently, one night backstage, Timberlake pointed to her feet and commented on their size.

"I had backup dancers and they had backup dancers and everyone was sort of gathered backstage and they were talking about feet or dancing or something, and somehow the conversation stopped and [Timberlake] looked down at my feet and was like, 'Oh, you've got big feet for a girl,'" she said. "And as a 15-year-old, who is, like, madly in love with him... it did [crush me]."

In the time since, however, Timberlake has reached out to make amends. "He's apologized since, though," Moore said. "He's such a lovely guy. He, like, seeked me out like, 'I just want you to know that I had no idea what I was saying. I was probably trying to flirt with you, and I understand how words can have an impact.' I was like, 'Justin, sir, you just played the Super Bowl. I'm fine.'"

We've all had really mortifying moments with people we admire, right? It's encouraging to know that some of those moments can become fond memories, even years later, with a few kind words. Good on Timberlake for owning his behavior!

Cooking everything from scratch has its merits, but with results this tasty, it's hard to deny the appeal of store-bought pizza dough. And no, it's not reserved solely for making pizza. In fact, there are plenty of ways to use refrigerated pizza dough.

With no kneading, no rising and flavor rivaling the homemade stuff, store-bought refrigerated pizza dough is a workhorse in both savory and sweet recipes. We prefer the kind that comes in a bag, but you can use the canned variety for many of these recipes, too.

Here are some of our favorite recipes featuring pizza dough.

7 Essential Tips for Vacationing With Other Families

$
0
0

When my kids were young, several times we rented a house at the beach for a week with my best friend from college and her family. Now, almost a decade later, we all look back on those vacations and recall the fun we had hanging out together. While our memories of these trips are happy ones, there were also many moments of tension and even arguments. The reality is that vacationing with other families can be stressful, particularly if you have different parenting styles or financial constraints. Being great friends doesn't always mean you're vacation-compatible — especially when kids are involved. But if everyone is willing to communicate their needs and compromise, it can be a lot of fun.

Here's how to make the most of your double (or triple, or quadruple?!) family vacation.

More: Our Editors Share Their Most Memorable Vacation Spots

1. Communicate parenting styles

Everyone parents differently. To vacation together successfully, it’s important to discuss each family's rules and style before you leave. On our first trip together, my friend and I discovered that we knew very little about each other’s parenting styles, even though we spoke on the phone daily. It took some adjustments and flexibility on all of our parts to find common ground and compromise; rules about bedtimes and sugary snacks had to be bent a little so that everyone could enjoy the vacation.

2. Outline vacation goals

Be honest about what your family’s vacation goals are. Do you prefer to sightsee or mostly sit on the beach? Do you enjoy cooking at home or usually go out for every meal? Don't assume that you have the same idea about what it means to be on vacation. Be up-front and honest before you start planning to go away together. Again, it's all about compromise. And if you find that you don’t share a lot of common vacation interests with this particular friend and their family, it might be wise to reconsider.

More: Summer Nighttime Activities the Whole Family Will Love

3. Be considerate

When you're sharing a living space, you have to be considerate of others. Be quiet in the morning if others are sleeping. Don’t leave clothes in common areas or dishes in the sink. If you are making a meal or going on a coffee run, ask if anyone else wants something. These little things can make a huge difference in your collective vacation experience.

4. Think about hiring help

That first summer, we realized quickly that traveling with families is not relaxing like our pre-kids vacations were. Renting a beach house also meant we still had the same chores as we did at home, only with different scenery and a lot more sand to sweep up. So, the following summer, we decided to bring along a sitter to help with the kids — and allow us to have a few grown-up nights out. If you can't hire help, consider taking turns with each other's kids so that all the adults get some downtime.

5. Discuss finances in advance

Make sure everyone is on the same page about the vacation budget. Will you split meals and groceries evenly, or will you allocate? Whatever you decide is fine as long as everyone knows what to expect in advance.

6. Split up into different groups

One of the keys to a successful vacation with other families is not doing everything together. Even best friends can get on each other's nerves and need some time alone or in a smaller group. On our trips, my girlfriend and I would go to spin class in the morning while our husbands took the kids to breakfast. In the afternoon, we would be on duty and our husbands would have some downtime. One or two days, we would go to lunch or dinner with just our own families. By spending some time apart each day, we were able to enjoy our time together more.

7. Stay positive

Things can go wrong on vacation, and you need to pack a positive attitude. One year, it rained for five of the seven days we were at the beach. Let's just say there was not much to do; everyone was getting cranky and stir-crazy cooped up in the house. Rather than continuing to complain, we really had to dig deep to come up with activities. We completed a 1,000-piece puzzle, went to the arcade and power-walked in a torrential downpour (after which we ate the most delicious pizza ever). On paper, it was one of the worst vacations we have ever been on, and yet we all still talk about that trip fondly. It turns out you don't need sunshine to create memories.

Beyoncé & Jay-Z Duped Us All on Tour With... Somebody Else's Twins?

Oh, to have the world wrapped around your bejeweled fingers like Beyoncé and Jay-Z. The incredibly famous couple tricked us all into thinking they had unveiled never-before-seen pictures of their twins, Rumi and Sir, on the first night of their joint "On the Run II Tour." But even after that sneaky trickster move, they are still beloved by all, damn it.

Queen Bey and her husband debuted pictures of two perfectly chubby, cherubic twins on Wednesday night in Cardiff, Wales — and the world went into a frenzy.

"WHAT ELSE IS BEYONCE GONNA GIVE US?? WE ASKED FOR DESTINYS CHILD, WE GOT IT AT BEYCHELLA. WE ASKED FOR TWINS, SHE SHOWED THEM. WHAT ELSEEE," one fan tweeted, summing up how the majority of people probably felt.

Unfortunately, we were all wrong. A rep for the Knowles-Carter crew confirmed to The Huffington Post that those twins were not in fact Rumi and Sir Carter (who turn 1 later this month) in a brief statement, "That was a film content clip. Not their babies."

More: Beyoncé Shares First Pic of Newborn Twins Rumi & Sir

Why, oh why, would Bey and Jay dupe us into believing they were showing off two of the most precious people in their lives? According to some fans, the answer isn't all that hard to comprehend.

"Y'all talk a lot of shit about jay z and Beyoncé not showing off their twins but after how cruel a lot of y’all were to blue ivy? don’t blame em," one person wrote.

More: Beyoncé's Most-Liked Instagram Posts of All Time

It's true; some people have been appallingly nasty toward the couple's first child, Blue Ivy, calling her uglycriticizing her hair and making other sexist, disgusting comments. It's not hard to understand why Beyoncé and Jay-Z might want to spare their youngest children from the same treatment.

While we may not have many answers from last night (namely, who on Earth are these fake babies??), we do know one thing, and that's that bullying babies is an awful thing to do, people. So, if the actions of some shameful internet commenters could actually ensure the rest of us may never get to see pictures of little Rumi and Sir, can we please do the world a favor and just be kind? (Pretty please. We really want to see those twin pics).

Arie Luyendyk Jr. Is Making an Appearance on The Bachelorette, but Ugh, Why?!

Buckle up, Bachelorette fans: Becca Kufrin's season is about to get bumpy. She recently chatted with Us Weekly at The Highlight Room in Hollywood, where she revealed that, yes, her ex-fiancé Arie Luyendyk Jr. will make an appearance this season. Ugh.

More: Becca Kufrin Will Have an Arie-Themed Date Night, & We're Already Over It

“He makes a quick appearance,” Kufrin said. “I’m not going to give anything away or when it happens, but it’s a conversation that had to happen.”

Really, though? Why is The Bachelorette spending so much time dwelling on the breakup?

After Luyendyk proposed to Kufrin on the Season 22 finale of The Bachelor, he changed his mind and decided he wanted to be with runner-up Lauren Burnham. ABC aired Luyendyk and Kufrin's lengthy, unedited breakup on the After the Rose special in March. Shortly after, Luyendyk and Burnham got engaged — and according to a source who spoke to Us, they opted not to tune into Kufrin's Bachelorette premiere.

“They’re happy for her, but they don’t see a reason to watch and relive everything they worked so hard to move past from,” said the source. So, what's Luyendyk doing making an appearance on the show? And why was her first one-on-one date in a rage room where she figuratively destroyed every memory she has with him? Awkward first date, if you ask me...

When Us asked Kufrin if she felt she and Luyendyk "got it all out," she simply replied, "Yeah." So his upcoming appearance seems a bit like titillation to increase viewers, which seems unfair to Kufrin, who's also worked hard to move past what happened on Luyendyk's Bachelor finale.

More: Becca Kufrin's First-Impression Rose Winner Is Causing a Lot of Controversy

The good news is she told Us that she's excited for fans to watch her "love story unfold." From her quotes, she seems genuinely happy with where her love life is now, and that's awesome. “I feel like this time around, it worked,” she said, referring to her relationship with her new fiancé. “And it’s just the best fit for me.”

We'll have to wait and see what Luyendyk's presence on the show means, but Kufrin did confirm to Us that another ex, Ross Jirgl (who tried unsuccessfully to win her back during Luyendyk's Bachelor run), won't be making an appearance. Honestly, we would rather have seen that — but as we all know, drama sells.

This Is What's Really Going on With Johnny Depp's Dramatic Weight Loss

In late May, photos of Johnny Depp giving autographs and taking photos with fans outside a hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia, hit the internet. The photos prompted a wave of questions and concerns, namely surrounding his obvious weight loss. Now, Us Weekly reports that the actor, who is currently on tour with his band, Hollywood Vampires, is doing just fine.

More: Johnny Depp's Managers Air His Dirty Laundry About Reckless Spending Habits

“Johnny is healthy and enjoying his time on the road with his band,” said once source. Another said that Depp "purposely lost weight because he’s on tour and is trying to stay in shape," arguing that he looks so pale and gaunt on purpose. The latter also noted that Depp "doesn't have any major health issues or anything."

USA Today speculates that Depp could have lost weight for a role. The outlet also posted another photo of Depp shared on the official Hollywood Vampires Instagram account in which he looks healthier. Overall, recent photos shared on the band account do make him look like the Depp we're more used to seeing.

Depp has not made an official statement on his health one way or the other; Us only shared quotes from anonymous sources, not Depp or his representatives.

More: Johnny Depp's Legal Woes Continue With a New Lawsuit

Either way, 2018 has been a tough year for Depp. In May, he was sued by two former bodyguards, and in an unrelated incident, he was accused of drunkenly trying to attack a crew member on the set of his film LAbyrinth. Director Brad Furman released a statement to Us about the incident, which read, “Johnny Depp is a consummate professional, great collaborator and a supporter of other artists. He always treats the crew and people around him with the utmost respect. Movies can be stressful, and nonevents often become exaggerated. We all love stories — there isn’t one here.”

2017 wasn't any easier — Depp finalized his divorce from Amber Heard, who alleged that he was physically and verbally abusive toward her during the course of their 15-month marriage. Heard received a $7 million settlement in the divorce, which she donated to charity. Meanwhile, Depp was embroiled in a dispute with his former business managers in February, accusing them of mismanaging his fortune — though rumors claim that the actor spends an average of $30,000 per month on wine according to USA Today.

Stress like the kind he's experienced in the past two years can easily be a factor in dramatic weight loss, but we'll have to take the sources at their words — even if he's surrounded by drama, Depp is doing just fine.

How to Have Hot, Wet Water Sex

$

0

As the days stretch deep into the night, there’s a lot of fun to be had, and not only in the bedroom. According to research conducted by Dr. Elaine Hatfield, a psychologist at the University of Hawaii, the third-most highly rated way to improve anyone’s sex life is to experiment more, and in the hot months of summer, what better way to experiment than to change up the environment, à la The Shape of Water.

No, we’re not talking mermen (necessarily; no kink-shaming here!), we’re talking about sex down where it’s wetter –– under the sea. Or lake. Or even your apartment-size bathtub, assuming you can squeeze two (or more!) people in.

“Water can provide a unique atmosphere of intimacy,” says Dr. Juliana Morris, licensed marriage and family therapist and founder of Be Your Own (S)expert, tells SheKnows. “It adds a variety of location that a typical routine of sex in a bed can't provide. It’s fun and important to change things by having sexual intimacy in [different] locations. Water can also provide an environment that stimulates different sensations.”

Plus, she notes, “For those who are differently abled or have medical issues triggered by weight or are challenged by muscle pressure, water –– especially pools and baths or showers with a sitting area –– can provide greater mobility, pain relief and sexual position options that land cannot.”

Of course, it’s definitely not as easy or challenge-free as we might see reflected in pop culture. Even though we see plenty of images of people having passionate, hot sex in water throughout media, the reality of getting it on in the water doesn't always match up, Morris says. "There are, though, some really wonderful things to experience while having sex in water despite some experiences that don’t reflect movie expectations," she adds.

And if you’re concerned about whether or not sex underwater is healthy, Dr. Ana Cepin, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, tells SheKnows that there’s not much to worry about.

“There’s shouldn’t be any health risk as long as the water you’re in is clean. It’s more just a matter of comfort.” she explains. Cepin also goes on to remind aquatic adventurers to make sure to still use protection against STIs and unwanted pregnancy, noting, “Water’s not birth control.”

So, assuming we find a clean body of water to occupy and we remember to stay safe, we asked Morris, "What do we need to know as we prepare to dive in?"

Lube up

Regardless of how, where and with whom you're having sex, remember that lube is your friend — both on dry land and in the water.

“Contrary to what would seem obvious, water does not work as a great lubricant for the vulva and vaginal canal or for condoms," Morris explains. "In fact, there can be a drying effect that can cause micro-abrasions. The micro-tears can also make the vaginal canal susceptible to STIs or bacterial or yeast infections.”

Ouch! So, how do you prevent them?

“Best way to prevent [micro-tears] is to use silicone lubrication; water-based lubes can wash away easily and oil-based lubes aren’t good for [latex or polyisoprene] condoms if you are using them,” she adds.

Safety first

While water itself isn't an effective form of birth control, Morris says that condoms do work in the water — especially in showers. Just make sure the condom is the right size.

"You need to make sure of fit if submerged in water like a hot tub, lake or bath, but with the right fit and periodic check in, condoms can and should be used in water if they are used on land," Morris explains.

And with all that extra moisture, maybe bubbles and silicone lube?

“Be careful not to slip," Morris warns. "It’s a serious passion-kill if you knock yourself out or catch a knee on the bathtub.”

Get creative & stay communicative

And as with any other type of sex, communication is key.

“To make sex in water the most enjoyable for all, communicate about it and through it," Morris advises. "Manage expectations, and if [you’re] trying it for the first time or trying new things, [then] take on an attitude of fun, curiosity and adventure with it.”

Chrissy Teigen Says Her Family Is ‘Boring AF’ in Hilarious Message to Newborn Miles

Nothing is dull — or ordinary, for that matter — about the lives of Chrissy Teigen and her husband, John Legend. She's a model, chef, author and TV host who consistently spars with the White House; he's a 10-time Grammy Award-winning singer. They ooze excellence. Still, that didn't stop Teigen from joking that she's "boring AF" in a cute message to her son, Miles Theodore Stephens, in honor of his due date on Thursday.

"Today was your original due date but you heard how cool we are since that's all we talk about (how cool we are) and you wanted to see what all the fuss was about, 3 weeks early," she captioned a sweet photo of baby Miles snoozing with his cheek resting on his tiny fist. "Well we tricked u! We are boring AF but we love you!"

This isn't the first time Teigen, who gave birth to Miles on May 16, has mentioned his early due date.

"Nothing fits my teenie premie :( not enough stuff out there! I gotta learn to sew. miles is tired of your body shaming, society," she tweeted on Sunday. Later, she added that he arrived three weeks early and weighed only 4.5 pounds at birth.

That's one tiny guy! And oh, boy, is he living his best life. Scattered across Teigen's Instagram feed are some delightful photos of Miles snuggling, sleeping, soaking in the sun and getting to know his big sister, Luna. He looks healthy and happy in each.

But Teigen keeps it real too: Earlier this year, the then-pregnant Teigen revealed that she was prepared to experience postpartum depression after Miles' birth.

"Do I worry about [PPD] with this little boy? I do," she said during the Create & Cultivate conference in February. "But I also know that when it does happen — if it does — I'm so ready for it. I have the perfect people around me for it. That's why I stand for a real core group of people around me."

PSA: You can never really tell what someone is going through by looking at their social media posts. Teigen, who experienced PPD after her daughter's birth, spoke to Glamour to encourage fans to destigmatize mental health issues and help others get the help they need.

"I do wish that more people had spoken up around me," she said. "I encourage anyone who sees something around them to point it out," she said, referring to the signs of depression.

Bottom line: If showing compassion for others and sharing honest, often hilarious depictions of family life makes Teigen "boring," then we, too, want to join the Monotony Club, please.

Yes! Netflix finally released the trailer for Season 2 of Queer Eye, which premieres on the streaming service June 15 — smack in the middle of Pride month. How appropriate! This season has been generating a lot of buzz, and we've been dying for a sneak peek, so this trailer is everything. We're especially excited about all the small details — and some of the big ones. Can you believe?

Queer Eye Season 2 Trailer

Queer Eye Season 2 Trailer

Before we get started on the little details, we've got to point out that this is our first real glimpse of Queer Eye's first female hero (their name for the subjects whom they give "make-betters" — never makeovers) and the series' first transgender hero. We love that this Queer Eye reboot is aiming to be more inclusive than its predecessor, starting with the Fab Five themselves and extending out to its heroes. The series is so moving and so good. We're definitely going to need tissues again.

Now, let's talk about all the fabulous things we caught in this trailer.

Diverse heroes

Queer Eye Season 2 offers make betters for all kinds of people

Much like its Season 1 heroes, Queer Eye is featuring a diverse cast of subjects for its Season 2 make-betters. We spotted people of color, plus-size people and people with different backgrounds and personal lives. It's awesome to see a series that could focus on exclusively cisgender, heterosexual, white, thin men instead focus on lots of people who we might not normally see represented in this kind of show.

Karamo Brown's mirror jacket

Karamo Brown rocks a mirror jacket in the Queer Eye Season 2 trailer

Culture expert Karamo Brown looks so stylish in a jacket made from... mirrors? That's a pretty bold fashion statement right there. We didn't even notice grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness wearing burgundy fur right next to him at first because Brown's jacket is so wild.

These patterns, though!

The Fab Five always look amazing, but some of the patterns we spotted are just flawless. There are even more in the trailer that we couldn't capture in all their glory, and we're sure there are even more in Season 2 that didn't make the cut for this trailer.

Antoni Porowski crying

Antoni Porowski cries at words of a Queer Eye Season 2 hero

When female hero Tammye tells the Fab Five to "continue making this world a better place," food expert Antoni Porowski just starts crying. We can relate. Tammye calls him out and brings him in for a hug, which is amazing. Her episode, according to Entertainment Weekly, forced design expert Bobby Berk to face his problems with religion head-on.

Casual affection among the Fab Five

Karamo Brown wipes a tear from Jonathan Van Ness's cheek

Brown, Van Ness, Porowski, Berk and fashion expert Tan France clearly love each other, but it's especially obvious in how they express affection with each other. There's a lot of supportive hand-holding in this trailer as well as Brown reaching over to wipe a tear from Van Ness's cheek — which may or may not have made us tear up too.

Genuine romance

A proposal on Queer Eye season 2 has us needing tissues

In Season 1, Tom and Abby totally stole our hearts — and got remarried after their appearance on the show! We can't wait to see the love stories that come out of Queer Eye Season 2: stories of romantic love, familial love, community love and, most important, self-love. June 15 can't get here fast enough.

Despite the TV talk show host's rare posts about her daughter on social media, Kelly Ripa shared a picture of 16-year-old daughter Lola Consuelos on prom night alongside her date. The teen, who celebrates her 17th birthday next week, looked happy, gorgeous and super grown up in a lavender floor-length gown, strappy sandals, and a white corsage.

In addition to posting a pic of Consuelos with her date, standing in front of a fountain, Ripa discussed the event on Live with Kelly and Ryan with a combination of pride and consternation only a mom can have for her teen daughter on prom night.

"They are now hosting events where you as parents are allowed to show up and take pictures, so that you have them, and then your daughter can forbid you from showing them on your talk show," Kelly said on the show Wednesday morning. "That's how it went for my son as well. It was unbelievable. I'm, like, 'I am not sure why you are robbing me of the privilege that all the other parents, like, all the other parents get to immediately post their photos on Instagram, why can't I?' And they're like, 'You know why.'"

Ripa also discussed on the show how she and husband Mark Consuelos decided on a prom night curfew after a discussion with their persuasive daughter.

"I want my daughter to negotiate my next contract," the TV host said. "She is a trained assassin. I had never seen a kid negotiate a contract this way, and then at a certain point she had us negotiating against ourselves. She is that good. She was truly remarkable in her getting extra time out of us, and then she did the baller move of all baller moves: She showed up a little early so we were like, 'She's so responsible!' Even though she had negotiated a full two hours past what time we had thought was appropriate. She came home 15 minutes early, and she's like, 'See? I'm home.'"

More: Kelly Ripa through the years — from 1973 to Live! with Kelly

Ripa didn't give many details about Consuelos' date, except to say that the handsome teen with a bit of a beard was "the loveliest kid" with "great parents."

Consuelos doesn't appear on Ripa's social media very often these days. In October, Ripa told Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show last October that Lola had gotten upset with her mom after she posted a Throwback Thursday picture of Consuelos in costume eight years prior.

“It’s so bizarre. I’m never allowed to post a photo of her, ever,” Ripa said, laughing. “Why did I have these kids if not to exploit them on social media?”

Ripa said that Consuelos told her to take it down because her friends "follow you for some reason and they will see this.” Ripa complied and removed the post, though she didn't hesitate to show it to Fallon's audience of millions (scroll forward to 01:55 in the video below).

No word on whether this recent pic was an exception to the "no sharing on social media" rule, or whether it's the start of a new trend, but we hope to see more pictures of everyone in this adorable family.

Anthony Bourdain – author, storyteller and TV personality – was found dead in a France hotel early Friday morning. CNN confirmed the news that he was found unresponsive by friend and French chef Éric Ripert after dying by suicide.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," CNN said in a statement. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Bourdain was in France filming a new episode for his award-winning CNN series Parts Unknown when he took his own life. Earning many nicknames throughout his career like "the original rock star" and "the Elvis of bad boy chefs," Bourdain leaves an incredible legacy behind, including 58 books, 11 TV shows, and most important, an 11-year-old daughter.

Friends and fans alike took to Twitter to share their disbelief.

In 2015, Bourdain did an interview with Wine Spectator magazine and told them how he'd like to be remembered when the day came, saying "Maybe that I grew up a little. That I'm a Dad, that I'm not a half-bad cook, that I can make a good coq au vin. That would be nice. And not such a bad bastard after all."

Bourdain's death comes just days after Kate Spade took her own life on Tuesday. According to a survey published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this week, suicide is a growing problem, having increased by 25 percent over the last two decades ending in 2016.

We Talked With Jane Krakowski About Her Womance With Ellie Kemper

“I can’t say enough good things about her,” Jane Krakowski gushed to us about her Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt costar Ellie Kemper. Ever since we learned the hilarious pair would be extending their dynamic duo status from Netflix to Sonic’s commercials (say goodbye to “Two Guys” and hello to these two!), we’ve been dying to get the inside scoop on Krakowski and Kemper’s real-life dynamic. Spoiler alert? It does not disappoint.

More: 13 Things to Know About Tina Fey's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

When we had the chance to chat with Krakowski, she sang Kemper’s praises. “My real-life dynamic is of complete admiration and respect for Ellie Kemper.” she shared. “I’ve always enjoyed her as a comedian and as a performer, but having just spent four seasons of television working with her, I have even more admiration. She is so professional, and she’s just been raised right. She’s just a great lady.”

More than ever, the Sonic spots make you ponder just how much fun it would be to spend time in Krakowski and Kemper’s company. Although Krakowski imagines Sonic chose the duo for their “comedic communication” together as opposed to their characters, it’s a safe bet that, yes, they are as hilarious as you might imagine.

“I think there are a lot of outtakes — I actually saw a whole bunch that I enjoyed very much,” Krakowski told us, laughing. “The outtakes are just as fun as the commercial spots are.”

It’s not hard to understand why she was drawn to the gig. However, Krakowski definitely has a lot on her plate, and that includes being a hands-on mom to 7-year-old son Bennett. The way Krakowski prioritizes her career understandably had to change.

More: 11 Most Inspiring Quotes from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

“Since becoming a parent, every decision is different now. I make every decision based on being a mom and taking care of my son and raising my son. I think that’s one of the beautiful things about becoming a parent — that everything becomes so much less about you and it becomes all about your child and raising your child. Which is a lovely thing in general, but I also think it’s an even more extraordinary thing for an actor sort of to not be thinking about themselves at all times,” Krakowski told us, letting out a robust laugh at that last thought.

So even though she says anytime she gets the opportunity to work with Kemper is “a no-brainer,” she still considered it through the lens of motherhood.

Such is true for everything too. “There’s not a daily decision that doesn’t involve your child from the day your child is born,” Krakowski said. “And so every job — whether it’s location-wise if I can do or how much time would be spent on the job — all of those things now come into consideration when looking for what to say yes or no to.”

To be clear, though, Krakowski wouldn’t have it any other way, calling it a “beautiful thing.”

This explains a lot when you consider Krakowski’s role in Hollywood as the go-to funny girl. To the busy working mom, laughter is always a sound exchange. She explained of her proclivity for comedic roles, “Hopefully, entertainment transports you from whatever it is going on in your day. I personally love doing comedy and making people laugh, so the more I get to do that, I feel very lucky in life.”

Yes, People Who Are Depressed or Suicidal Can Look Like They 'Have It All'

$

0

There is no official way to look depressed or suicidal. It's not as if you get your diagnosis from a psychiatrist and are immediately issued a pair of stained sweatpants and a worn-out bathrobe and instructed to skip showering and never stop crying.

For a lot of people living with mental illness — myself included — it can look like we have it together. We can get up in the morning, put on a polished outfit, go to work, make jokes, socialize and carry on as if everything were normal — even though in reality, inside we feel like life is pointless and hopeless.

Upon first learning about my diagnosis, several people even told me that I don't "look" depressed or even that I have "no reason" to be depressed. But that's not how mental illness works. There is no way of looking at a person, assessing their physical appearance, demeanor or professional success and knowing for sure what's going on in their mind or how their brain works. But this is hard to remember sometimes — like when we learned of the deaths of designer Kate Spade and chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain.

MoreWhat People Don't Realize About Suicide Prevention

Though Spade's sister, Reta Saffo, told the Kansas City Star that Spade had suffered from "debilitating mental illness" for the past three or four years and was self-medicating with alcohol, she says Spade avoided seeking help out of fear that it would hurt her "happy-go-lucky" brand. Bourdain, on the other hand, has always been open about his former drug misuse, but in recent years has held what many people would consider their dream job: Hosting a TV show where you get to travel and eat.

Most of the rest of us aren't literally the face of a cheerful, colorful brand built on optimism, or have a successful TV career, but some of us also living with mental illness can absolutely relate to feeling like we have to constantly mask how we're really feeling.

Why losing a public figure this way affects us

Most of us don't know Spade or Bourdain personally, yet similar to the responses to the deaths of Robin Williams and Chester Bennington, many people have strong emotional reactions. This happens because we feel somehow feel personally connected to their work — whether your first "real" handbag was one of Spade's designs or you grew up watching Williams on Mork & Mindy or listening to Bennington's music with Linkin Park.

"We invite public figures and celebrities into our homes and our hearts in such a way that allows us to genuinely celebrate when they get married and have children and grieve when they are gone," Dr. Marissa Long, a licensed clinical psychologist in Southern California and the founder of Thrive WISE, tells SheKnows. "The loss of these icons by way of suicide can have an even bigger impact because of how we have come to know them over time. We know them as happy, healthy, successful role models. We don’t typically know them as actual people with struggles or complaints."

More13 Things Never to Say to Someone Who Is Suicidal or Depressed

Success is not an antidepressant

Unsurprisingly, when someone well known dies this way, people have a lot of questions, most frequently, "How could they be so depressed? They had it all," Dr. Dion Metzger, a psychiatrist practicing in Atlanta, tells SheKnows. She explains that we see people like Spade as successful and rich and assume that it comes with happiness, noting that her death serves as a reminder that mental illness does not discriminate based on income and/or fame.

It also underscores the incorrect assumption that depression is simply being really sad about a certain event or situation — as opposed to being a serious mental health condition based in the brain that impacts our mind and behavior, Long explains.

"This means that no matter how seemingly great our lives may be or actually are, if the brain’s chemistry is out of balance in just the right way, we will suffer from depression," she says. "A depressed person may be stereotypically sad, isolative, cry often and have negative thoughts. They can alternatively be extra engaged, putting effort into connecting one last time or anything in between."

Warning signs

Although people living with depression and/or suicidal thoughts don't all look a certain way, there are some warning signs to keep in mind. These could include a person giving away their possessions, making vague statements like "the world would be better off without me" or "I wish I could just go to bed and never wake up," or hoarding their medications instead of taking them as prescribed, Patti Sabla, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker practicing in Hawaii, tells SheKnows. Similarly, Metzger adds that other warning signs include a person isolating themselves from other people and making final statements like "I've always loved you."

Additionally, Long says not to ignore a person if they talk about wanting to die or kill themselves, noting, "This may seem obvious, but often goes overlooked." And pay attention to other things they say, including if they mention that they feel like they're a burden or hopeless. Also, any behaviors that display a recklessness or disinterest in safety beyond what would be considered normal may be a warning sign, Long adds.

What to do if you think someone might be suicidal

As hard as it might be to address suicide with someone, Long says that it's important to let the person know that you're concerned about them and care.

"Oftentimes, when we think that someone may be suicidal, it can create a very real fear that we attempt to dismiss or avoid," she explains. "Instead, the best thing to do is to approach it in a caring but head-on manner and provide solid resources, and possibly even a plan to immediately access those resources such as a suicide hotline, contacting the police or going to a nearby hospital for evaluation and support."

If you simply avoid the issue, it can add to depressive thoughts such as, “no one cares” or “it would be better for others if I were gone,” Long says. And don't be concerned that bringing up suicide will plant the thought for the person. "If someone is having thoughts of suicide, the greater risk is not talking to them about it," she adds. "By the time that someone may think and be brave enough to ask about suicidal thoughts, it is likely their loved one has been contemplating or struggling with suicidal thoughts in secret."

What can we learn from this?

We can use tragedies like Spade's death as a teachable moment for those who may not know much about suicide, Sabla explains, adding that now is the time to have a dialogue about it because suicidal thoughts are more common in society than we realize.

"Hopefully, this decreases the stigma behind suicide and allows people to have an open conversation about it," she says.

I've Had Breast Cancer Once — Here's Why I Decided to Get Genetic Testing

$

When my boyfriend and I first started dating, we’d talk a lot about our pasts; mine included recently completing more than a year of treatment for breast cancer. He was about eight years out of the military. We found many similarities in our paths, but when he spoke about being discharged and driving off base for the last time, knowing he wouldn’t have to go back, I paused.

I don’t have that.

There are no guarantees that someone who has thrived through cancer will never get cancer again. As much as your doctors will pat themselves on the back and say, “We gave you the best treatment there is,” they have no way of knowing what comes next. The course of treatment that was laid out by my oncologist was the best for me at that time, but there’s one piece of the puzzle that does not care what treatment I had on the front end.

Enter genetics.

After my initial diagnosis in 2010 and upon learning that I was of Ashkenazi (Jewish families that originate in Eastern Europe) descent, my oncologist recommended that I go for genetic testing to see if I was BRCA1- or BRCA2-positive, as these two gene mutations are more common in Ashkenazi Jews than other origins according to the National Cancer Institute. Materials from the NCI explain that mutations in these two genes in women mean that their risk of developing certain types of cancers, specifically breast and ovarian cancers, are higher than others.

More: Having Breast Cancer at 32 Put Me in Control of My Body

Before this testing, it was recommended that I receive a single mastectomy, but if my genetic testing had come back positive for these two mutations, that might not have been the case. The test came back negative, and we all breathed a sigh of relief and continued with my original treatment plan. I’d get asked frequently, “Are you BRCA-positive?” and I’d say no, but after a while, you start to wonder, are there other mutations that I don’t know about?

I started pushing the subject of genetics on my last oncologist visit (I go every six months for blood work) and he recommended a geneticist in Washington, D.C., for me to meet with for an informational session.

Recently, I sat in the geneticist’s office and she showed me the family chart that she had created based on all the information that I had given her regarding my family history: My mother had triple-negative breast cancer, my two uncles died from pancreatic and lung cancer. Our family history is peppered with the disease, yet she failed to see a cohesive link. What she did see was that the BRCA testing that I had done in 2010 was essentially out of date.

As with cancer treatments, there had been advances in genetic testing. The question was, “Did I want to know?”

I had lived in this world where I have been told since the end of my treatment in 2011 that I was cured. It was all over. But what if it isn't? What if the newer tests for other mutations in the BRCA 1 and 2 genes showed that I am more likely to develop ovarian or breast cancer again? What if I am genetically predetermined to be at a higher risk for colon or stomach cancer?

She explained to me my options: If the new tests come back positive for other BRCA 1 or 2 mutations, I could start getting scans every six months in between my yearly mammograms or I could opt to have another mastectomy on my right breast. I didn't find either option particularly appealing.

“What about ovarian cancer?” I asked her.

“There is no mammogram for ovarian,” she replied. “Most women choose to have their ovaries removed.”

This informational appointment was heading downhill quickly.

The geneticist gave me two options; I could go home and think about it, or I could spit in the tube, activate the enzymes that stabilize my DNA and wait two weeks. Being the impatient person that I am, I started spitting.

It was a long two weeks. I’d go from, “Whatever, I’ll just get another boob job,” to “But I don’t want another boob job,” to “I’m not ready for menopause,” to “No more PMS could be cool.”

More: How Having Cancer Changed the Way I Looked at Dating

I received an email from her two weeks later. “Good news! No mutations!” I breathed yet another sigh of relief.

I understand that many people would not have gone down the same path. Your body is your body. There’s nothing you can do to stop your genes, and you can’t change your DNA, so why spend your life worrying? To this I say: When you don’t get to drive off into the sunset and never look back, you might as well at least drive around with all the maps you can get your hands on so you know where you are going.

Suicide Rates in the US Are Fast on the Rise

With two public figuring dying by suicide this week, it may seem like it's happening a lot. And according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control, that is actually the case.

Findings published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicate that rates of suicide in the United States have increased nearly 30 percent since 1999. The most common method used for suicide is guns, accounting for almost half of all deaths by suicide.

More: Yes, People Who Are Depressed or Suicidal Can Look Like They "Have It All"

"Suicide in this country really is a problem that is impacted by so many factors. It's not just a mental health concern," Deborah Stone, a behavioral scientist at the CDC and the lead author of the new study, told NPR. "There are many different circumstances and factors that contribute to suicide. And so that's one of the things that this study really shows us. It points to the need for a comprehensive approach to prevention."
With nearly 45,000 suicides in 2016 alone, it represents a major public health concern. In fact, suicide is the 10th-most common cause of death in the United States and one of only three causes that are increasing, according to the CDC.

More: What People Don't Realize About Suicide Prevention

Ultimately, the goal of the CDC's research in this area is to come up with a comprehensive evidence-based approach to suicide risk and prevention — ideally providing services for people before they get to the point of feeling suicidal — and to create resources for friends and family members of people who have died by suicide.
One important step is knowing the warning signs for suicide. According to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, these include:
  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
  • Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or isolating themselves
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Extreme mood swings

Jaime King, you win mama of the week in our book. On Tuesday, the actor was on hand at the LA premiere of Incredibles 2 by Disney and Pixar. She strolled the red carpet with her son, James Knight, 4-1/2. The best part of this mother-son adventure? Both were wearing amazing dresses.

King captioned a social media pic of the event, “I love my baby SO MUCH!!! He chose my lipstick and dress with Annabelle Harron. To my beautiful husband, I love thee. The greatest creation has been our love made manifest in our children. #jamesknight #ifyoulikeitwearit#incredibles2"

"If you like it, wear it," is our new favorite motto. King rocked a long red dress and white heels, and little James chose a magenta frock with flower and bow detailing on the collar (along with slip-on R2-D2 sneakers).

So many celebrities (including Olivia Munn, Charlotte Ronson, Selma Blair, Rachel Zoe and Lisa Ling) praised King for letting her son wear a dress to the big occasion.

“What a wonderful mom and human you are,” Ling gushed.

Instagram fans of King were full of support too (erm, for the most part):

"I’m speechless. What an amazing, loving, caring, perfect woman and mother you are. James is beyond lucky. He looks amazing and so do you. To teach him at such a young age to embrace his femininity and not see it as shameful...those are lessons that will stay with him throughout his life. I loved you before but now my heart is exploding. You are made of LOVE," commented one follower.

Of course, there were also naysayers, terrified of "confusion": "You look stunning as always. However I think it's becoming trendy for parents to dress up their kids in different gender clothes. It's like parents want to show how open and moral they are, but I think it will confuse kids. If kids discover that they that are trans as they grow up then of course support them but parading them in dresses at such a young age must cause confusion."

Aaaaand then we have the grumpy old-school judgers: "Wearing a dress is not an accomplishment. That would be like praising a woman for wearing pants on her wedding day. Lmk when the kid does something praiseworthy - like train hard to win a race or show self discipline by memorizing his times tables," one commenter huffed.

"The word 'brave' is used entirely too loosely. It's so trendy to be 'strong' and 'triumphant'. What a load of hot, steaming shit," commented another, who must be a real charmer at baby showers.

We side with this commenter: "wow. you are truly one of a kind. i hope someday i can be the kind of mother you are today. this makes my heart soar. you are amazing."

King, a mother of two, is married to Kyle Newman. They also share son Leo Thames, who will be 3 next month.

King has always been remarkably straightforward about gender and fashion as it pertains to children. “We have set limitations upon our children and babies, whether that be consciously or subconsciously. Somewhere along the line of ‘dos and don’ts,’ we relegated children into little boxes that are so restrictive,” King previously said to People when discussing her distinctly gender-neutral clothing line, Gardner and the Gang ♥ Jaime King Collection.

King added, “Somehow, the world decided that boys belong in blue and girls belong in pink and anything other than that is weird or strange and in some ways frowned upon — as if allowing a boy to wear purple or hot pink is steering them in the wrong direction."

“This collection is vastly important because we want any boy that likes our dresses to rock them,” she continued. “[For] any girl that doesn’t want to wear a skirt to put on some sweet leggings.”

We love the whole collection, and we love King. Go, Mama Bear, go. All we see is one happy kid and one glowing mom — where's the harm in that? And if commenters are "confused," well... that sounds like their problem.

Prince Harry Took Off His Wedding Ring... Already

Well, the honeymoon is over. No, really — Prince Harry and his new bride, Duchess Meghan of Sussex, (née Meghan Markle) are clearly back from theirs, because Prince Harry was spotted in London on Thursday, June 7. And while the royal returned from the newlyweds' top-secret post-nuptial trip with a smile, he was noticeably without one thing: his wedding ring. And while everyone wants to freak out, we don't think this is a sign of trouble in paradise.

More: Meghan Markle & Prince Harry Are Officially Married

The good prince was photographed on a gym outing with a workout partner, hence the super-casual attire of a plain t-shirt and sweatpants. Even if Prince Harry hadn't been headed in for a sweat session, though, there are plenty of other plausible explanations for why he would be out and about without his wedding ring.

Maybe he takes it off when he applies hair gel to his signature ginger coif. We all know that gel and rings are non-simpatico, right? Or, perhaps more plausibly, he lost weight from all the honeymoon sex he and Markle were having and he had to send the ring out to be re-sized.

More: All the Photos You Have to See From Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Wedding

The point is it's totally normal to go sans ring sometimes. Any married person — whether they've been married a minute or more than a decade — will tell you the same. Most of us simply don't have paparazzi trailing us with zoom lenses trained on our ring fingers.

While Prince Harry's absentee ring kicked off what is likely the first of many rumors about the state of his union with Markle, the couple soon won't have time to dwell on any silly drama. Markle's official royal duties begin on June 14, when she is scheduled to make her first solo outing with Queen Elizabeth. Reportedly, the public duty will be the first of many where Prince Harry's new bride will essentially shadow the reigning monarch.

"The Queen knows the potential pitfalls of not giving [new members] a guiding hand. It's all about the monarchy. She can't expect Meghan to know everything without being shown," Ingrid Seward, royal family expert and biographer, told People in this week's issue.

As for Prince Harry, his trip to the gym isn't the only public appearance he has made since returning to London. Royals reporter Emily Andrews shared a snapshot of Harry at Kensington Palace attending a dinner for the OnSide Youth Zones charity on June 7.

"Prince Harry & Meghan are back from their honeymoon!" Andrews tweeted. "Harry was guest of honour @OnSideYZ gala dinner at Kensington Palace tonight. Host @davidwalliams made everyone laugh by introducing him as a newly-married man."

The triple threat, dressed in an amazing two-piece one hundred dollar bill outfit, chatted about her love of spots before revealing that if she and Rodriguez ever went head-to--head athletically, it could spell the end of their relationships.

J-Lo said that she ran track in high school, and that she has "tons of trophies."

"I'm so competitive in every way," she said. "It's just something inside of me."

When the crowd responded with laughter, she said: "I'm not laughing!"

She said that the two never directly compete athletically, but that she sometimes does in her mind while they're at the gym.

"He doesn't even entertain my delusions," she laughed.

"If he does challenge you, it may lead to a competition," Kimmel explained. "And there's no winning that for him."
