When it comes to celebrity couples that we're loving right now, it can be hard to know what the future will hold for them. We've been so invested in the narratives being woven about certain celebrity relationships, including Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson and, last but not least, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. These couples have been through their fair share of highs and lows, but what lies on the road ahead?

Who can say whether there is longevity in a relationship, if the problems you face as a couple can be overcome, or whether you two are really meant for one another? Well, we can get some hints through our consultations with the traditional Rider-Waite Tarot deck.

To see into these celeb couples' futures, we focused on the energy of each couple and imagined them sitting before us as we drew a single card. We wanted to discover not only what the future holds for them but also what they can do to love and support each other better.

So, what do the cards tell us about the futures of these beloved couples? Keep reading to find out.

Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez

Card: Wheel of Fortune

Reading: Ahh, glamorous J.Lo and sporty A-Rod. The Wheel of Fortune tells us these two have a serious shot at the long haul together. The wheel spins and reminds us of life’s ups and downs. Sometimes we’re happy, the next day we're sad. Sometimes we have everything we want, then we discover everything is gone. The secret of the Wheel of Fortune card is that if we stay centered, no matter which way the wheel spins — up, down or sideways — we can roll with it.

These two can roll with the punches. Rodriguez loves to sit back and admire his woman shining on stage and basking in the limelight. What’s more, he supports this fierce, fabulous working mama as she keeps her family life on track. There is a calming, stable quality in their relationship, keeping them centered no matter what appears before them. It feels like marriage is on the horizon.

Jamie Foxx & Katie Holmes

Card: The Emperor

Reading: These two have been around the block enough to know that if you want to keep a Hollywood relationship afloat, privacy is the name of the game. The Emperor card reflects stability and strength — the complete opposite of the frenetic energy of Holmes' last relationship, with Tom Cruise. Here, Foxx reflects the polar opposite of Cruise's manic energy.

These two are also in it for the long haul because the Emperor indicates building a kingdom. Nothing can sway them in this, and each of them brings out the other’s strengths. The flip side of the Emperor reminds Holmes and Foxx not to become too stuck in their relationship habits and to do something wild, crazy and outside the box from time to time.

Gwyneth Paltrow & Brad Falchuk

Card: 10 of Wands

Reading: The goddess of Goop and her handsome Brad 2.0 have been at the forefront of our minds ever since they announced their engagement on the cover of Goop’s Sex and Love issue earlier this year.

The 10 of Wands reflects the ending of a cycle, as the number 10 is where an issue winds down. This power couple juggles children, careers and monumental passion projects. If their marriage is to succeed — and this is good advice for all of us — it is super important to let go of the past. When a fight or conflict is resolved and the two of you make up, you have to mean it. No lip service allowed. Unless true forgiveness is offered, old resentment will cycle back around to bite the relationship and the couple in their respective butts. The magic is that the ending of a cycle heralds a fresh start. These two have a shot at the long haul if they can find a way to balance their passions, opinions and sense of right over wrong.

Miranda Lambert & Evan Felker

Card: Queen of Pentacles (reversed)

Reading: When the reversed Queen of Pentacles appeared, the first thought to strike my mind is that there is trouble at home. The Queen of Pentacles is a domestic goddess, ruler of the family and the house, and this card's reversal immediately signals trouble.

We can never understand what happens between two people, let alone between couples we don’t actually know. The reversed Queen of Pentacles suggests that no matter what the perceived truth of the situation is, there will have to be a lot of work put in and a lot of karma addressed in order for this relationship to continue. Keep in mind that relationships don’t have to last a lifetime or even a few years in order to be successful. We learn from all experiences in life, especially in the realm of love. However, the reversed Queen appears to remind us to treat others the way we would want to be treated. It also reminds me of the witch’s rule of three: in spell casting and in our life, the energy we put out is the energy that returns to us three times over.

Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom

Card: 8 of Wands

Reading: Who doesn’t love this fiery, feisty couple? The 8 of Wands shows wands flying through the air, which can literally be seen as Cupid’s arrows shooting toward lovers who are marked for each other. The comfort of rekindling an old flame means there is a familiarity and wisdom in the relationship. These two understand that they can overcome what drove them apart, and what’s more, they value the magic between the two of them.

There’s a speed and passion and energy in the 8 of Wands. The Tarot says these two are fast, furious and heading straight for the altar.

Jon Hamm & Jenny Slate

Card: Justice

Reading: The hallmark of the Justice card is the idea of work: The work you put into a particular project equals the result you will enjoy. Of course, this idea filters over into our romantic relationships. Are you feeling a sense of lack in love? Give your partner what you desire most. Are you looking to fall in love? Fall in love with your life and act like you are already in love. It will help you find love that much faster, and you’ll feel delicious while doing it.

Hamm and Slate work marvelously well together on a professional level. Their intimate relationship off-set requires some real sweat and blood, however. If each of them is ready to make a commitment and do the work, they’ll be fine for the long run. But if either of them seeks the easy way out, the relationship will be over fast.

Khloé Kardashian & Tristan Thompson

Card: The Star (reversed)

Reading: The Star reflects emotional openness and flow. Upside down, this card looks like it's draining the body’s life fluid. Tristan has drained the relationship between himself and Kardashian so drastically that unless he does everything in his power to right the ship, it’s doomed to sink. Hope is never truly lost. Tarot reminds us that anything and everything is possible. However, there are some things that can never be undone. Thompson and Kardashian both require a serious love transfusion, individually and as a couple, for this relationship to work. That being said, there’s nothing like a baby and parenthood to alter, change and transform the way we love ourselves and others.

Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani

Card: The Magician

Reading: The Magician card reminds you that everything you need is right at your fingertips, no matter your life situation. You have the tools to cast wild magic on your life. The Magician also reminds you that as an energetic creature, you are a conduit for energy (the card shows how he channels divine energy through his body and into the ground).

We can't get enough of the magic and charisma flowing between Shelton and Stefani. The hallmark of the Magician card is, as it happens, charisma — and these two are overflowing with it. Ignore what you read in the tabloids; these two are hot and heavy, and what’s more, they know how dynamic and powerful they are as a couple as well and apart. Count on seeing these two together for a very long time. Also, count on a very near-future creative collaboration.

Danica Patrick & Aaron Rodgers

Card: 5 of Swords

Reading: Trouble in Paradise. There’s no way around it: The 5 of Swords is a challenging card, reflecting stumbling blocks that either transform a relationship or hold it back. The question is, how will these athletes face their particular challenge? The key lies in taking responsibility for the way they communicate with each other, especially regarding the distance between the two of them. Communication is key here and it seems there’s an outside influence, perhaps an unresolved former love, that keeps rearing its ugly head and causing issues that need to be addressed in order for them to move forward.

Laura Dern & Baron Davis

Card: 8 of Pentacles (reversed)

Reading: The reversed 8 of Pentacles tells us that for Dern and Davis, this is an effortless relationship; it doesn’t feel like work for them. There is a beautiful symmetry in the way these two communicate together. Sometimes a relationship just needs ease and space and freedom. That’s exactly what these two lovebirds have. Will it last in the long run? Who cares? They aren’t looking at the big picture, and we shouldn't be, either. Let’s take a lesson from Dern and Davis and sit back and enjoy what’s in front of us without overthinking it. Sometimes, it's enough to simply live in the moment and experience pleasure as it overcomes us. In fact, often, that's everything.

Just for fun: Jennifer Aniston & Brad Pitt

Card: 2 of Pentacles

Reading: Brad and Jen: Now here's a pairing. There’s still hope for these two as the 2 of Pentacles reflects choice, duality and motion. Aside from the world watching as these two revolve in each other’s orbit, they are well aware of what could be rekindled. Don’t count this couple out yet. Just like Perry and Bloom, some relationships are like a gorgeous varietal of wine that needs time in order to develop properly. With age comes wisdom and reflection and a willingness to open oneself up to the transformative power of love.

My Kids Gave Me Life After My Father's Death

Pop Culture

I remember the day my parents told me about my father’s diagnosis very clearly. He had fought cancer on and off for 11 years, and it had gotten to the point that there wasn't much more the doctors could do. I'd always known that losing a parent would be tough, but I hadn't expected it to become so much tougher once I was a parent myself.

Suddenly, all I could think about were a million what-ifs. "What if that were me dying a slow and painful death and my two daughters had to suffer through watching me? What if I die when they are this young and they forget about me? What if I get too sick to care for them?" Of course, it's natural for our minds to wander to dark places when we’re grappling with the realities of life and death. But I never imagined that my children would be the ones to pull me into the light when I needed it the most.

More:  How to Help Someone Cope With the Loss of a Baby

My father died less than six months after his last diagnosis. I was making lunch for my two toddlers when I got the call. There on the phone was my mother telling me the worst news of all our lives, and here at the kitchen table were two cheerful ruffians, banging the table with their plastic spoons, waiting for their macaroni. The contrast was jolting. And I didn’t know it then, but it was exactly what I needed.

In Islam, it’s customary to bury the deceased as soon as possible after the time of death. As a result, funerals are often held the day of or the day after the loved one has died. There is little time to process what is happening until it is over. My father died on Thursday morning, and by Friday afternoon, he was in his final resting place.

Even though we knew it was inevitable, can you ever really prepare for the death of a parent? And the thing I feared the most was how to explain it to my 3-year-old, who was so fond of her Nanu.

She knew he was sick too; after all, he had lost the ability to move his legs and his left arm. Because Nanu was not able to walk, my daughter naturally assumed that he had gotten a boo-boo on his leg — and we didn’t correct her because she wasn’t really wrong. We visited my father a few times each week, and every time, she would ask, holding his hand tightly, “Nanu, is your boo-boo feeling better? Can I kiss it for you?” It broke my heart every time.

What I didn’t see then was how much positivity and light my daughter emanated. She didn’t understand the scope of what was happening; she didn’t know the concept of death even existed. And because of that, she was able to take care of me when I needed taking care of.

When I came home after my father’s funeral, the girls were already in bed. It was late. I wanted to hold them, but the best I could do was hold onto their video monitors. Looking at their innocent sleeping faces was the cure I needed that night.

In the days, weeks and now months that have passed since his death, my two toddlers gave me the strength to get out of bed every morning. It didn’t matter that I didn’t want to; I had to. Because runny noses still needed wiping, scraped knees still needed Band-Aids, and hungry bellies still needed pancakes with maple syrup.

When we face moments of such uncertainty, it’s easy to forget that life still goes on. And my biggest fear, of having to tell my 3-year-old that her Nanu had gone to heaven, didn’t turn out to be as bad as I thought it would. She accepted that he had been sick and so he had to go someplace else. She was upset when I told her she wouldn’t be able to visit him anymore, but with time, she accepted that too.

One spring afternoon, my mom was playing with the girls out in the front yard of our house. Out of nowhere, my 3-year-old asked, “How did Nanu get to heaven? Did he drive? Did he take a plane? How did he get there?” I couldn’t help but smile.

The positivity of children knows no bounds. They aren’t concerned with space or time — they don’t worry about death and the beyond. Instead, they focus on the here and now. They concentrate on what they can see, on what they can hold in their hands. The tangible is what matters to them, and it’s what keeps them smiling.

On the days when I miss my father too much, I try to focus on the tangible too. I look at my 3-year-old’s delight when she gets a new pack of stickers. I concentrate on my 1-year-old and how excited she gets when she sees me after I’ve been away for a few hours. I flip through old photographs of my father with my girls, hoping they will remember him when they are older.

I don’t spend too much time thinking about the what-ifs anymore. Without planning to or even knowing they're doing it, my daughters have taken care of me more than I have taken care of them these past few months. I may be the one feeding them and bathing them and clothing them and wiping their noses, but their caretaking feat is greater. Every time my mind hides in a dark corner, they pull me out — without even knowing what’s wrong. They make it better simply by being there.

Anthony Hopkins Said Some Potentially Cold Things About His Estranged Daughter

It's apparently been several years since Sir Anthony Hopkins last spoke with his estranged daughter, Abigail, and the actor couldn't care less according to comments he made last week. According to People, Hopkins reportedly walked out on his relationship with Abigail's mother, Petronella Barker, when Abigail was just a toddler. Now, she's 48 years old, and Hopkins said he's not concerned about what she's doing with her life — but he swears he's not being "cold".

More: 35 questions we have about Westworld Season 2

In an interview with the Radio Times, Hopkins discussed the BBC's upcoming King Lear adaptations, in which he plays the titular character. Shakespeare's Lear is driven mad by the breakdown of his relationships with his daughters, so a question about his own estranged relationship with Abigail doesn't seem far off the mark.

When asked about her and whether she has children of her own, though, Hopkins told the Radio Times, "I don’t have any idea. People break up. Families split and, you know, ‘Get on with your life.’ People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other.” The interviewer said that response seemed cold, to which Hopkins replied, “Well, it is cold. Because life is cold.”

In a follow-up interview with The Sunday Times, Hopkins apparently seemed surprised that his comments received so much coverage.“No, I wasn’t cold," he said, backtracking a bit on his Radio Times interview. "I’m not cold. Her choice is her choice. You know, I did the best I could, but you know, OK, I think if somebody doesn’t want to be part of my life, fine. Go and do whatever you want. I have no memories or any . . . I certainly don’t . . . I wish her well and all that, but I don’t want to talk about my daughter. Those things are over."

According to People, Hopkins arranged for Abigail to make appearances in two of his films in the 1990s, but the two haven't spoken since. Abigail told The Telegraph in a 2006 interview that, growing up, "I would see him, but maybe once a year." She expressed similar sentiments to her father about the need to move on: “There is a little bit of sadness, but I have to get on with my life. It has always been like that. See him, and then not.”

Hopkins told The Sunday Times, “I’ve got no blame. People do what they do. And I don’t understand it and it doesn’t bother me. I can’t waste my time worrying about it. And I’m not cold, I’m just thinking, ‘Oh well, that’s the way it is.’”

However estranged she and her father are, it would seem they have a lot in common. Abigail struggled with alcoholism, substance abuse, and depression, something her father has been open about in his own past. They also have similar career interests. On her personal website, Abigail identifies as a singer-songwriter, actress, and acting coach. Reconciliation may not be in the cards for these two, but things do change. Regardless, we wish them both the best.

Netflix Canceled A Ton of Promo Events Because of Jeffrey Tambor

Months after several trans women came forward to accuse actor Jeffrey Tambor of sexual abuse on the set of the Amazon series Transparent, after which he was fired from his starring role, the actor is once again surrounded by controversy. Last week, the New York Times published an interview with the Arrested Development cast, in which Lucille Bluth herself (Jessica Walter) tearfully talked about Tambor's alleged verbal abuse on set.

More: Jeffrey Tambor Is Officially Quitting Transparent

Now, Netflix has canceled a series of promotional events for Arrested Development, which were scheduled to take place in the U.K. ahead of the series' season five premiere on May 29. "We had planned to have most of the Arrested Development cast in London this week to support the launch of the new season and meet fans," Netflix said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. "At this time we have decided not to move ahead with promotional activity in the U.K. but hope to bring the cast back at another time."

Netflix cancels UK press tour

Netflix cancels UK press tour

The memo doesn't specify why Netflix is canceling so many events, but the reasons seem obvious. After the Times published its interview on May 23, just 6 days ahead of the series' new season premiere, Walter's comments spread like wildfire — and rightfully so.

"Let me just say one thing that I just realized in this conversation," Walter said. "I have to let go of being angry at him. He never crossed the line on our show, with any, you know, sexual whatever. Verbally, yes, he harassed me, but he did apologize. I have to let it go. In … almost 60 years of working, I’ve never had anybody yell at me like that on a set. And it’s hard to deal with, but I’m over it now."

Walter's co-star, Jason Bateman, defended Tambor, saying that this was "part of his process", which prompted significant backlash from social media users. Bateman took to Twitter to apologize for what he said during the interview, stating that he was "wrong" and "incredibly embarrassed and deeply sorry".

Tony Hale also spoke up for Tambor in the Times interview, saying, “We’ve all had moments … we’ve worked together 15 years, there has been other points of anger coming out." Walter responded,  "But not like that, not like that. That was bad." According to Entertainment Tonight, Hale reached out to Walter to apologize.

In an interview with Gothamist, David Cross said he should have spoken up for Walter: "I didn't speak up as much as I should have, and I regret it."

Now that the cast is apologizing, canceling the U.K. press tour is potentially a step in the right direction for Netflix. Unfortunately, it also reads less as a serious attempt at solving the problem Netflix has created by keeping Tambor on its payroll than it does as a mere PR stunt to appease critics.

Netflix has had a rough go of it since Tarana Burke's #MeToo movement became a viral hashtag last fall. The streaming giant fired actor Kevin Spacey from its hit series House of Cards — and nearly canceled the show altogether — after he was accused of attempted sexual assault. However, the company then came under fire after executive Andy Yeatman allegedly told a woman who accused The Ranch star Danny Masterson of rape that the company flat-out didn't believe her. Shortly after, they fired Masterson and Yeatman, but the debacle left a black mark on Netflix's reputation.

It would seem Netflix is confused on its own policies about believing and standing up for victims of sexual abuse. The lesson here, to be frank, is that we must believe trans women. Had Netflix followed Amazon and fired Tambor from Arrested Development months ago, the series could have continued on without him. Walter wouldn't have to work with someone who allegedly verbally abused her on set. And the impact of the #MeToo movement would be more widely felt, especially among marginalized communities.

10 Reasons Cate Blanchett Remains One of Our Favorite Actors in Hollywood

$

Cate Blanchett really is the whole package. It’s not shouted in every headline and article about her, but it should be. Blanchett sometimes gets overlooked by other women in the entertainment industry who are also focusing in on pay parity, equality in Hollywood and working to end harassment in the workplace.

More: 7 Lesbian Stereotypes Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett Avoid in Carol

When we started taking a harder look at Blanchett's personal and professional choices, we realized we should be celebrating how she’s used her voice in a powerful way. She’s made decisions and proclamations publicly way before many others did, and she didn't do it for trendy reasons — she did it because it’s who she authentically is as a person.

Ahead of the release of Ocean’s 8 on June 8, we want to call just a few vital Cate Blanchett details to your attention. They might just have you cheering a little louder when you see her latest film.

1. Cannes Film Festival

Cate Blachett Cannes march

As Cannes Film Festival jury president, Cate led 82 actors and executives down the prestigious red carpet to call attention to gender inequality in the film industry and at the film festival. Kristen Stewart, Salma Hayek, Ava DuVernay and Patty Jenkins are just a few of the women who stood in solidarity with Blanchett that day.

"On these steps today stand 82 women representing the number of female directors who have climbed these stairs since the first edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. In the same period, 1,688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs,” she said. “In the 71 years of this world-renowned festival... the prestigious Palme d’Or has been bestowed upon 71 male directors, but only two women: Jane Campion, who is with us in spirit, and Agnès Varda, who stands with us today.”

Blanchett used her position of power at the festival to remind everyone that time is up for this disparity. The movement isn’t just a fad.

2. Time's Up

Time's Up tweet

Time's Up tweet

Blanchett was a part of the original group of 300 that launched the Times’s Up movement in early January. She, along with Reese Witherspoon, Eva Longoria, Natalie Portman and others, decided to kick off award show season with a strong statement. It wasn’t just about taking a stand for women in entertainment; it was about taking a stand with women in all industries.

The movement also became a fundraiser for a legal defense fund for “those who experience sexual harassment, abuse or related retaliation in the workplace or trying to advance their careers with legal and public relations assistance. The money raised will help defray legal and public relations costs in select cases based on criteria and availability of funds,” according to the movement's official GoFundMe page.

Blanchett donated $50,000 when the movement launched. The fund has now raised almost $22 million.

3. Feminist pioneer

We shouldn’t be surprised by Blanchett's activism. She was speaking out long before others felt empowered to do so. She’s been vocal about the media targeting women who are working parents. Why aren’t men asked the same questions about work-life balance?

“It’s certainly a question that’s never asked of men. The question is only ever directed towards women. ‘How do you balance? How do you have it all?’ When anyone plays a mother on film, there is a whole raft of judgment in that a mother is a particular archetype or that every mother is the same," she said to IndieWire in 2014. "That’s complete rubbish. We did discuss a lot about that particular issue because of course there is a judgment on how women parent.”

Blanchett has been fighting for women's rights longer than any of us realized.

4. Chameleon on-screen

Cate Blanchett Bob Dylan

Blanchett has never been defined by one genre. She’s great in her dramatic roles, and she's also transitioned seamlessly into playing a Marvel movie character. Whether she's playing Bob Dylan in I'm Not There or a lesbian in Carol, she’s an actor who will immerse herself in a role.

“Whenever I play a role, whether it's on stage or screen, I'm always interested in points of difference,” she explained to Marie Clare in 2016.

Blanchett is anything but a one-note actress. Her depth and presence on-screen make us stand up and take notice.

5. Grace under scrutiny

Blanchett has won two Academy Awards, one for The Aviator and one for Blue Jasmine. Even though she is a major award show contender each year she has a film being considered, her contributions to the industry were downplayed by writer Aaron Sorkin in an email to New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd.

"Cate gave a terrific performance in Blue Jasmine but nothing close to the degree of difficulty for any of the five Best Actor nominees," Sorkin wrote in the email, discovered in the Sony Pictures hack of 2014.

Instead of having a meltdown over his opinions, Blanchett told GQ, "I knew that it was hacked, but I didn't go and troll over the broken bones and identify the dead bodies. I didn't do that. I was doing other stuff."

6. Sexuality

During the press tour for the 2015 film Carol, a story about two women falling in love in the 1950s, Blanchett revealed that she had been involved with women “many times’ in her personal life. However, that’s almost all she said about her sexuality in the Variety interview, making it clear that she doesn't define herself by her sexuality. She may be married to writer/director Andrew Upton, but being heterosexual, bisexual or lesbian isn’t a label she cares about.

“I never thought about it,” she explained in the interview. “I don’t think Carol thought about it.”

7. Fashion icon

cate Blanchett fashion icon

Blanchett is known as one of the most fashion-forward women on the red carpet during award show season, but don't think she's dressing for you. It's an expression of her own identity, and she doesn't care what anyone else thinks.

“For me, the true icons of style... it’s that for me it’s always those women who’ve been utterly themselves without apology — whose physical presence and their aesthetic is really integrated in a non-self-conscious way,” Blanchett said at the InStyle Awards in 2017. “Women who know how they look, it’s not all of who they are but just an extension of that, and it’s about women who feel free to wear what they want when they want and how they want to wear it.”

8. Mom of four

Blanchett loves being a mother to her four children, sons Dashiel, 15, Roman, 12, and Ignatius, 8, and daughter Edith, 3. She's said that the best part of motherhood is the normalcy it brings to her life, which totally makes sense when she has months of working on-set.

"It's very important to me to be able to enjoy taking them to school or making their lunches or cooking dinner at home for my family," she told Working Mother. "I also like being able to be the kind of mother who is not only there to take care of them and love them very dearly but also one who has a career. I think it's important to set an example and show how the two can work together quite well."

9. Aging

Can we just applaud Blanchett for embracing aging gracefully? Sometimes Hollywood focuses too much on the superficial when beauty comes from inside. We need to hear more of this from female celebrities.

"I just accept it," she explained to Working Mother. "Getting older happens to all of us, and there are many advantages that come with age. I feel much more comfortable in my skin today than I ever have before."

10. Philanthropy

If we needed more reasons to love Blanchett, we've got them. Since 2016, she's been a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, going on fact-finding missions in Lebanon and Jordan, and she hopes to support the U.N.'s work for refugees around the world.

"There has never been a more crucial time to stand with refugees and show solidarity globally," she explained in her U.N. statement. "We all have a desire to connect and this is what makes us all human."

Don't miss the opportunity to support Cate Blanchett and the seven other stars of Ocean's 8 beginning June 8. Rooting on great women is definitely worth the price of admission.

Queer Eye Is Back for Pride, & It's Featuring Its First Trans Hero

When Queer Eye premiered on Netflix in February, it had some key differences from its predecessor: a more diverse Fab Five, for one, and a shorter title, for two. But dropping "for the Straight Guy" from the title was purposeful. In Season 1, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness also gave a "make better" (because they say they don't give makeovers, just "make betters") to a gay man named AJ. Now that the series is back for a second season, it's focusing even more on inclusivity.

More: What Queer Eye's Fab Fives' Relationships Are Really Like Behind the Scenes

Netflix announced that Queer Eye will return for its second season on June 15, which falls right in the middle of Pride Month. Perfect! Even better, the streaming giant announced that the new season will feature Queer Eye's first female hero (their name for the people they make better) and its first transgender hero. This is a really cool step forward for the series, and we're excited about it!

Queer Eye S2

Queer Eye S2

According to Entertainment Weekly, the first Season 2 episode features Tammye, the series' first female hero. Tammye is a schoolteacher and cancer survivor who's planning her church's homecoming. Apparently, we need to have tissues at the ready — this season already sounds like just as much an emotional roller coaster as Season 1.

“The coming home service in African-American culture is big," culture expert Brown told EW. "I love going to church. I have a great relationship with Christ. I have a great relationship with the church. And so, for me, I was excited.”

As we learned in Season 1, not everyone in the Fab Five has such a solid relationship with religion. Interior design expert Berk, who talked about his religious upbringing and how hard it was for him to come out in a Season 1 episode, said, “[Tammye's] episode was very, very hard for me honestly. I almost refused to do it. One of the things I said to producers and creators when I first got cast, was, ‘I’ll pretty much do anything, just never ask me to go into a church.’ I grew up very religious. Religion was my entire life. And then when I came out, religion completely turned their back on me. And I’ve never really gotten over that."

However, Berk's Fab Five cohorts saw this as an opportunity for education and growth. Fashion expert Tan France said that he, Brown and Berk had a "really heated" conversation during filming and that he and Brown ultimately sought to show Berk that "people turned their back" on him, and that Tammye wasn't one of those people.

“There are times even we need to educate each other. … It’s not just the audience we like to impact, it’s each other," France said. Berk praised Tammye for being "so loving and accepting and open," and just reading these quotes is already making us teary-eyed.

Season 2 also introduces Queer Eye's first transgender hero, Skyler, in Episode 5. Hair and makeup expert Van Ness said, “One of my closest friends is a trans man who is incredible. And a lot of my clients are trans women. So I am really hoping that we can do right by our trans brothers and sisters. [Skyler] is going through so much, so [it was important to be] gentle and respectful and not to be a queenie know-it-all dum-dum when you’re trying to be a loving person.”

France agreed, adding, "I think that LGBTQ people are lumped into a group, and many people assume that I’m in the struggle with everybody else in my group," but that's not often the case. He admitted to not being as prepared for Skyler's episode as he was for others, but that he hopes they did the episode respectfully and appropriately.

Lady Gaga is back in the studio! The singer canceled the last 10 shows of the European leg of her "Joanne World Tour" in February due to severe pain and stayed out of the spotlight as she recovered this spring. On Saturday, she returned to the studio to work on music for her upcoming film, A Star Is Born. We're so relieved by the news.

According to a source who spoke to Us Weekly, "Lady Gaga's back to work and feeling better." They added, "Bradley Cooper joined her at the studio earlier yesterday — they are putting the finishing touches on the music for the movie. Gaga is in amazing spirits and much more back to herself. She has been all smiles and is so happy to be back at work.”

Gaga, who has fibromyalgia, opened up about her struggles with chronic pain from the disease in the Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, which was released last September. She later postponed the European leg of her tour before finally canceling in February. A dual statement by Live Nation and Lady Gaga was posted on Instagram at the time.

"I'm so devastated I don't know how to describe it," she wrote. "All I know is that if I don't do this, I am not standing by the words or meaning of my music. My medical team is supporting the decision for me to recover at home. ... I love this show more than anything, and I love you, but this is beyond my control.... I promise I will be back in your city, but for now, I need to put myself and my well-being first. I love you, forever. XX Gaga"

Lady Gaga previously canceled her 2013 "Born This Way Ball" tour because of a hip injury. In Five Foot Two, she dealt with muscle spasms that spawned from the same injury. Fibromyalgia and associated injuries can be incredibly painful. We admire Gaga for her strength and for her insistence on working through the pain, but we also applaud her for taking necessary time to heal.

Katy Perry Flew Across the Country for Love (Kind Of)

If long-distance relationships ever seem unmanageable, try being a jet-setting celebrity — although the jet setting might actually make things a little bit easier. We could ask Katy Perry, who flew to London on Saturday to see Orlando Bloom in his new play in between stops on her Witness tour. Isn't that sweet?

More: Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom Made Their Relationship Public for a Major Event

Perry said during the American Idol finale on May 21 that she's "not single," which seems to confirm she and Bloom are back together in their on-again, off-again romance, although she didn't mention him by name.

In April, the pair met the pope at the Vatican while on vacation together. A few days later, in an interview with the Times, Bloom said, “We had a really remarkable connection. And it’s difficult. She’s on tour, I’m doing a play, everything evolves. I have a lot of respect for her and a lot of deep feeling. So we will see.”

According to Us Weekly, Perry shared a photo on her Instagram Story on Saturday that showed a program for Killer Joe by Tracy Letts featuring Bloom on the cover. The play is a crime thriller set in the American South; it was turned into a film starring Matthew McConaughey in 2011 but is currently in previews at Trafalgar Studio 1. It officially begins its stage run on June 4 and will go until August.

“Doing a play is a need," Bloom told The Times. "I mean, it’s a bit of an indulgence, to be honest. You are doing it for the love, certainly not for the money. But it’s wonderful to be able to go deep with a character, you don’t get the chance for four weeks’ rehearsal in film. You get two, three days if you are lucky. So it’s one of the times where you are learning the craft. It sets you up. Fuels the fire.”

Although neither Perry nor Bloom have outright stated that they're back together, it's not often someone takes their only day off from tour to see an old flame in their new play. Per Us, Perry was back in Amsterdam the same night to perform at Ziggo Dome, meaning her trip to London was super-short. We hope they at least got a few minutes together before she had to rush back to tour.

Chip Gaines Slammed Negative Parenting Comments So Hard It Forced an Apology

Usually, Chip Gaines is warm, jovial and always ready to spread the love wherever he goes. But when word got back to him about an article implying that he and his wife, Joanna Gaines, might be so focused on their careers they're putting their children to the wayside, he got so heated on Twitter it forced the author of the article to issue a formal apology.

More: Chip Gaines Accomplished a New Big Goal

The turmoil began when an article titled "For Chip and Joanna Gaines, family first is a talking point. But is it reality?" appeared on USA Today's website. Written by Daryl Austin, the article argues that the Gaineses frequently speak of the way they put family first at all times even though they're major public figures. Austin claims he doesn't believe that with all of the things the Gaineses have to do on any given day — from their television duties to running a magazine, online store, restaurant and so forth — the celebrity couple has enough time to devote to their children.

"This is just not possible," he writes, "and it does a disservice to the parents who really are putting their children first. No matter how rich and famous, we are all limited by the same 24 hours in a day. You cannot do all they’ve done (or even a fraction of it) and still have any real time left over for family. Frankly, I wonder where they even find the time to brush their teeth, let alone spend quality, one-on-one time with each child daily."

No matter which way you slice it, that's a strong indictment on the Gainses' parenting skills, especially when it's coming from someone who is on the outside looking in — with no apparent firsthand evidence to support his claims to boot. USA Today later proceeded to tweet the link out to their followers, posing the question, "Do you think Chip and Joanna's life is just for show?" to their followers.

It's not clear how the article got to Gaines, but boy, oh boy it got to him in more than one way. In response to USA Today's question (and presumably after reading the actual article), Gaines tweeted out: "I don't know Daryl, & he clearly doesn't know me. But for the record: If there is ever a need w/ my family (1st), I'll shut this circus down so fast it will make your head spin. BUT jo & I believe, w/ God anything is possible. Including having an amazing family AND career you love."

Chip Gaines Family First React Tweet

Gaines rarely gets this stern, but it's hard to see how he's in the wrong here. With an article alleging — and based purely on an opinion — that he may not be an up-to-snuff parent, one who is choosing his businesses over his kids, it's easy to empathize with his reaction. Also, not that he really needed to justify it to his followers, but it is heartening to know Gaines has gone on record to say he would shut all his work down if it meant keeping his family intact; that's truly what putting your family first looks like.

With Gaines' Twitter clapback blowing up the Twittersphere and getting lots of support from his fans, Austin seemed to have a change of heart about his critical article. He recently wrote another column for Fox News, which acts partially as an apology and partially as a justification (cue our skepticism).

"I regret writing it," Austin writes. "I didn’t write it to be hurtful, out of jealousy, or to cause controversy — all motives I was accused of. I wrote it for one simple reason: because I believed every word I wrote to be true."

Gaines has yet to respond to Austin's apology, although it seems like Austin's deeply regretful for ever criticizing the beloved HGTV couple. This reaction from Gaines seems to have been so out of character and so vehement that it's really a warning to Austin and anyone else: Don't criticize when you don't really know what's going on.

John Cena just can't stop teasing and toying with our emotions, can he? Although he and his former fiancée, Nikki Bella, are still officially split up and have yet to confirm whether they're getting back together, that has stopped them from dropping hints all over the place about it. They've each gone on record at separate times saying that reconciliation is still an option for them and they still have feelings for each other.

On Monday, Cena unleashed upon the world a cryptic yet totally interesting tweet that has us wondering whether he's gearing up to make a reconciliation happen for real. The tweet itself has a nice touch of double entendre to it — "Let's stop messing around, and start messing around" — but it's also got the wheels in our brain turning so fast. Is this tweet meant for Bella? Is this Cena basically making his big overture to his former fiancée in front of the world? Is Bella OK with this? You guys, there's just so much going on here.

Cena hasn't confirmed who the tweet was for (or even if it was meant for a specific someone) or what spurred him on to post it.

Despite calling off their engagement back in April, E! News notes that the couple is still reportedly living together in San Diego and that the pair spent Memorial Day together and was spotted getting a bite to eat at Civico 1845 in San Diego.

Everything You Need to Know About Macronutrients & How They Affect Your Diet

By now, you've probably talked to a few people who have opted to go the route of calculating their macros rather than counting calories. With all sorts of diet and nutrition regimens out there, it can get hard to keep up — and the phrase "calculating macros" may sound like a foreign language.

So, let's back up and focus on what macros are, starting with their name: "macros" is short for macronutrients.

What are macronutrients?

Nutrients are substances used by organisms for bodily functions, growth and energy, Dr. Luiza Petre, a board-certified cardiologist, tells SheKnows. As the term implies, macronutrients are needed in large amounts. For humans, there are three macronutrients necessary for survival: proteins, carbohydrates and fats (also known as lipids).

"In calorie form, each macronutrient provides energy that is needed for everything from maintaining circulation, growth and development to giving enough energy to the brain for cognitive function," Petre explains.

Here's a look at what each macronutrient means for your diet.

More: What Is a Macro Diet?

Proteins

Protein foods are comprised of amino acids, which are sometimes called "the building blocks of the body." Protein provides 4 calories per gram.

There's a reason that protein is commonly associated with muscle building and fitness. Cory Sarrett, a consultant for All Inclusive Health in New Orleans, tells SheKnows that proteins are essential for building muscle mass. "Constructed of amino acids, protein helps you stay full and keep your immune system strong," Sarrett says. "You can’t build muscle without sufficient protein intake."

Kelly Krikhely, a registered dietician, tells SheKnows that it's key to eat lean proteins like fish, low-fat yogurt, skinless chicken and eggs. She also encourages experimentation with plant proteins such as tofu, edamame, beans, nuts and seeds.

"These lean sources will provide you with the protein you need while limiting the saturated fat in your diet, " Krikhely explains. "Steak, hamburgers and chicken wings will provide protein but aren’t the best choices for our diet because of their saturated fat content."

More: What Is Protein & Why Is It So Important?

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates also provide 4 calories per gram, Sarrett explains, adding that carbohydrates are your body’s main source of energy. Carbs are the macronutrients most easily broken down by the body, and Sarrett says you need them in the largest quantities out of the three macronutrients.

In addition, Krikhely says that, although they don't deserve their reputation as the enemy, not all carbs are created equal. "We should limit added sugar but make sure to incorporate healthy carbohydrates, including fruits, yogurt, beans, starchy vegetables and whole grains," she says. "Healthy carbohydrates provide a wide range of vitamins and minerals, including the B vitamins found in whole grains and calcium from yogurt."

More: 5 Nutrients You're Probably Not Getting Enough Of in Your Diet

Fats

Contrary to what its stigma might lead you to believe, fat is actually essential to a healthy diet. Petre explains that fat plays key roles in controlling your appetite and in disease prevention.

"[Fat] regulates hormone production, protects vital organs, regulates temperature, fuels the brain and helps with anxiety and depression," she says. Fat provides 9 calories per gram.

Similarly, Krikhely emphasizes that fat is essential in order for your body to function each day. What you'll want to pay attention to is the type of fat you're consuming. She adds that the most up-to-date recommendation is to consume mono and polyunsaturated fats, limit your saturated fat intake and avoid trans fat. Butter, cream, fatty meats and processed junk food are all sources of saturated fat.

"Avoid any foods that include partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredient list," Krikhely says. "This is the red flag for trans fat. Instead, we should focus on eating healthy fat from avocado, olive oil, nuts and seeds, natural peanut butter or fatty fish like salmon."

So, there you have it: macronutrients. If you find tracking your macros helpful for healthy eating, great. If not, at least you'll know what you're talking about the next time someone drops this buzzword in conversation.

Cynthia Nixon — Helene Fuld College of Nursing, May 4

Nixon gave a tribute to her mother, talking about the woman who taught her courage throughout her life and modeled a can-do attitude. She credited her mother’s approach to a cancer diagnosis for giving her the faith to approach her own, later diagnosis head-on. She also encouraged graduates to “never doubt that you can make a space big enough for yourself in this world” and to know that their voices are important as they advocate for their patients and for better health care.

Amal Clooney — Vanderbilt University, May 10

The human rights lawyer told the crowd it was her first commencement address and asked them to bear with her. But there was little need for that, as Clooney eloquently discussed current affairs she is passionate about, telling grads that courage is needed now more than ever. She cited infringement on women’s rights and LGBTQ issues and freedom of the press as examples of areas that need courageous leadership.

Oprah Winfrey — USC Annenberg, May 11

Winfrey told the crowd she would have been there anyway, since one of her “daughter girls” — a mentee from the school Winfrey founded in South Africa — was part of the graduating class. She reminded graduates that they are now in a position to keep people in power “in check” by responding to false narratives and illuminating darkness. She urged grads to pay attention to people who claim to represent their interests and hold them to account.

Chance the Rapper — Dillard University, May 12

The singer proved himself a powerful speaker last year with his impassioned speech accepting the BET Humanitarian Award. At Dillard’s graduation, where Chance received an honorary doctorate, he encouraged students to get over the fear of eclipsing their heroes by comparing the performances of Michael Jackson and Beyoncé. “You do a disservice trying to live up to your ancestors,” he said. “You have to outlive them.”

Michael Keaton — Kent State University, May 12

Like many graduation speakers, Keaton spoke about his own memories of college and the way the experience changed him. He explained how school helped him grow to love education and touted the idea of free education for all. The actor also encouraged graduates to take chances in life to help them get back to their most authentic self. But he left the audience with the two most important words he could think to give them: “I’m Batman.”

Turns Out, the Most-Commonly Taken Vitamin Supplements Don't Do Much

$

0

A lot of us were raised to take our vitamins. Whether those were shaped like Flintstones characters or tasted like deliciously tart orange juice (we called them "vitamin C candies"), our parents made sure we got the full range of vitamins and nutrients we might have been missing in our childhood diets. Many of us have carried this habit into adulthood, but are those daily supplement pills actually doing anything?

According to new research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, they don't have any consistent health benefits. On the flip side, the study found that there were no consistent harms — so unless you're loading up on sugar-heavy gummy vitamins, you're probably no worse off, either.

MoreAre the Health Benefits of Gummy Vitamins Worth the Sugar?

By conducting a systematic review of existing data and single randomized control trials published in English from January 2012 to October 2017, the researchers found that the most commonly taken supplements — multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium and vitamin C — demonstrated no advantage or added risk in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke or premature death.

Typically, people take vitamin supplements to make up for deficiencies of various vitamins and minerals in their day-to-day diets or — in the case of vitamin C — to boost their immune system.

"We were surprised to find so few positive effects of the most common supplements that people consume," Dr. David Jenkins, the study's lead author, said in a statement. "Our review found that if you want to use multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium or vitamin C, it does no harm — but there is no apparent advantage either."

But some supplements do have proven benefits, including folic acid alone and B vitamins with folic acid, which the study found might reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke. On the other hand, there was some evidence that niacin and antioxidants may be responsible for a slightly increased risk of death from any cause.

More: How a Vitamin D Deficiency Almost Destroyed My Life

"These findings suggest that people should be conscious of the supplements they're taking and ensure they're applicable to the specific vitamin or mineral deficiencies they have been advised of by their healthcare provider," Jenkins said in the statement.

Ultimately, though, the study confirmed what we already knew: The best way to obtain these vitamins and nutrients is through a balanced diet.

"In the absence of significant positive data — apart from folic acid's potential reduction in the risk of stroke and heart disease — it's most beneficial to rely on a healthy diet to get your fill of vitamins and minerals," Jenkins said in the statement. "So far, no research on supplements has shown us anything better than healthy servings of less processed plant foods including vegetables, fruits and nuts."

Between feeding everyone, picking up and dropping off kids at their various activities and tackling the seemingly never-ending heap of laundry, it's hard for parents to carve out time for sleep, let alone for a hobby. But making time to do something you enjoy can be beneficial for your mental and physical health, according to research conducted by the Australian Psychological Society. Have you ever wanted to learn a new language or how to play an instrument? Or are you more interested in getting your hands dirty outdoors?

Below, we've assembled a list of 25 hobbies that are actually doable for stay-at-home parents (or anyone, really) to do solo or with the kids. So get out there and carpe hobbiem (or something).

Whether you prefer to plant a low-key succulent garden or have aspirations to grow fruits and vegetables, gardening is a great way to unwind while also getting some vitamin D outside. Plus, gardening is an excellent activity to do with your kids — just be prepared to have dirty little footprints scattered through your house afterward.

Learn a new language

Parlez-vous française? Well, you could. Learning another language has never been more accessible thanks to programs like Duolingo, Babbel and Rosetta Stone.

Find your new favorite podcast

If you need something to listen to while the kids are napping or you're doing chores around the house, consider checking out a podcast. With so many topics to explore from true crime to cooking, you'll never be bored.

Polish your photography skills

Smartphones may have made amateur photographers out of all of us, but there's something special about picking up a DLSR camera, adjusting a real lens and documenting the special moments in your life. Enroll in an online photography course or take advantage of the thousands of instructional videos online. From there, practice by snapping pictures of your kids and nature. Who knows, your hobby could one day turn into a lucrative side gig!

Learn to use Photoshop

Now that you're a photographer, teach yourself how to edit like the pros. Bonus: Your Photoshop skills will also come in handy if you want to design invitations or, you know, embarrass your kids by making hilarious memes.

Woman does yoga in her living room.

Find your fitness favorite

You don't need us to tell you that exercising reduces stress, lowers the risk of heart disease, increases your energy and boosts your health in general, but we're going to remind you anyway. Reserve 30 minutes or more a day for physical activities like yoga, walking, dancing or running. If group sports are more your thing, find a recreational league or call up your friends and start your own.

Write every day

Writing in a journal or on a blog can be both therapeutic and enjoyable. Block out at least 15 minutes a day to jot down your thoughts, vent your frustrations or pen heartfelt notes to your loved ones. Have tips or short stories to share with the world? Create a website and blog away. You might find a passion you didn't know you had (and even make a buck or two).

Take up DIY

Your name might not be Joanna Gaines, but that doesn't mean you don't also have what it takes to be a DIY maven. Head to a local flea market or thrift shop and get inspired. From restoring old furniture to making a statement piece out of antique frames, there are endless projects to fuel your creativity. Plus, you can use this opportunity to teach your kids the value of upcycling.

Restore a cool vehicle

If DIY home décor isn't quite your style, consider taking on a different kind of restoration project: fixing up an old bike or car. Tired of reaching for your tools? Ask your kids to be your assistants. They'll love helping you out on a passion project.

Become an organization pro

Yes, even tidying up around the house can be a hobby — but we don't necessarily mean the usual sweeping/mopping/dusting routine. Make the best of your space by putting everything in its place. Start by looking around your house. Are there areas you wish were less cluttered? Make a list of what you need (such as sleek organizational bins) and what you can donate (for example, those old T-shirts that have been sitting in your closet for years), and come up with a plan to make your space both functional and visually appealing. If you don't know where to start, reference some of our organizational guides on closets, offices and kitchens.

How much can you spend per month? Over time — and with a lot of patience — you can see your money multiply. Think of this as another way to save for your future.

Meditate

We know it can be hard for parents to find the time to shower, let alone make space for meditation. But spending a few minutes a day concentrating on your breathing can help ease anxiety and help you feel more present, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you're looking for a place to start, check out these five-minute meditation tips.

Volunteer

Teach your children the importance of community service by volunteering at a local food bank, animal shelter, retirement home, library or elsewhere in your community. (The experiences will not only be immediately rewarding but will also look great on your child's future college and employment applications.)

Fact: Fresh flowers make everything better. Less fun fact: Bouquets are often expensive. Save some money and dust off your green thumb by learning how to assemble gorgeous arrangements. If you don't have a flower garden, no worries — you can often purchase single stems from local farms or florists and still save money by putting them together yourself.

Become an amateur brewer

Satisfy your taste buds and your wallet by learning how to brew beer at home. There are plenty of kits on the market that make it easy for you to make stouts, IPAs, pale ales and more.

Get into pickling

Pickling and canning can be a fabulous way to preserve some of your garden's (or the farmers' market's) freshest produce. Plus, pickled vegetables and sweet jams are tasty additions to any wine and cheese plate.

Make your mark as an activist

So many great organizations need members like you to spread their messages and inspire change, especially now, as the current administration fights to take away educational, reproductive and environmental rights. Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Honeymoon Destination Was Finally Announced

With all the hubbub of the royal wedding behind them, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan of Sussex, whom you might know better as Meghan Markle, deserve some time off. Over Memorial Day weekend, we learned via TMZ that they've decided on a royal honeymoon spot that is quite close to us Americans. The couple will reportedly be jetting off to Canada for a stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in the small town of Jasper, Alberta, and it sounds like the perfect place to relax.

According to the report, the newly minted duke and duchess will stay in a 6,000-square-foot cabin at the resort, which is considered a Canadian paradise. With the cozy, small-town atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, we can’t imagine it's anything but. A source told TMZ that the resort has ordered some special “gear and goodies” that it doesn’t normally have just for the royal couple. With things like kayaking, skiing and boating listed on the resort’s activities and services page we doubt Harry and Meghan will get bored during their stay.

The cabin Harry and Meghan will reportedly stay in is called the Outlook Cabin, although we're more intrigued by its other name: “The Royal Retreat." As explained on the lodge’s website, in 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, stayed there and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip spent time there in 2005. The site also describes the cabin as having six bedrooms and bathrooms, two fireplaces, an enclosed conservatory and veranda, a terrace with a barbecue and a kitchen with a private catering entrance. Sounds like they could host an awesome house party or just Netflix and chill with as much privacy as they want.

Though the costs of security are sure to be high, the couple seems to be keeping it frugal with their choice. On the site, you can see that a room can be booked tonight for $600, though the rates go up as summer goes on. That’s quite a chunk of change for sure, and the sumptuous cabin will likely cost more, but it’s still much less than some sought-after resorts during the busy summer season.

It should be noted that one local Canadian news station is reporting that the lodge has denied that the couple are booked at the lodge, but perhaps that’s just a security precaution. No dates for the upcoming honeymoon have been reported yet. The Daily Express does report that before the couple arrives in Canada, they’ll touch down for a one-night stay in Ireland sometime in July.

It’s too bad the lovely couple couldn’t head off to relax on their honeymoon right after the wedding, but we wish them the best on their retreat whenever they manage to carve out the time to just be newlyweds.

What Is 'Keto Flu,' & How Do You Treat It?

When you find yourself sniffling and coughing as the weather goes from rays of sunshine to crisp fall breezes, you might head to your doc for an annual flu shot. Though, sure, a change in temperature can cause an infection, you can also get flu-like symptoms from a transformation in your diet. Surprisingly, some of the setbacks from restricting a specific type of food can be detrimental, not only to your metabolism but to your overall health and vitality too.

One of the more common ailments many dieters suffer from is known as "carb flu" — which Dr. Keith-Thomas Ayoob, the associate clinical professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, says is actually better called "low-carb flu." Just as the name suggests, this is related to how many or how few carbohydrates you’re consuming. It's also called the "Keto flu" because some people experience these symptoms when starting the popular diet.

Here, experts shed light on what carb flu is and why you should be wary of it when attempting to improve your eating habits or drop pounds.

More: Is Low-Carb Better Than Low-Calorie Dieting?

What is carb flu?

When you go on a very low-carb diet, cutting out even good-for-you carbohydrates from all meals and supplements. This causes your body to perform differently and work double-time to function.

“You can feel a variety of symptoms that mimic the flu, from headache and lethargy and feeling weak to constipation or diarrhea,” Ayoob explains. You might also suffer from a brain fog, where you can’t seem to concentrate or focus on the task at hand. While he stresses that you won’t have a fever from the carb flu, it can wreak havoc in your day-to-day performance at work.

What is carb flu & what are the symptoms?

What causes it?

Because all bodies need the appropriate balance of fat, carbohydrates, proteins and other essential nutrients, restricting one group to an extreme puts your body into a different mode of processing. As Ayoob explains, when you begin to contract the carb flu, it’s your body going into ketosis, a state in which it burns primarily fat for calories (hence the keto in keto flu). This is actually a prehistoric way for your body to process what you eat that started back when food was harder to come by and our early ancestors were forced to perform on much less intake.

“Fat is harder for the body to burn, and while it can survive on ketones, it’s definitely not desirable for the long-term. It’s how the body learned to survive during periods of famine and lack of regular food,” Ayoob says.

More: When Is the Best Time to Get Your Flu Shot?

Is it dangerous?

Ayoob says that more likely than not, carb flu isn’t life-threatening, with symptoms only lasting several days or a week. However, lingering conditions like bad breath and constipation can continue to manifest if you restrict your carbs consistently, mainly due to the lack of fiber in your diet. Ayoob’s best advice is to not spend too long on a low-carb crash diet and instead invest in a healthy alternative to losing weight.

“Your breath may smell rather acidic because you aren’t getting enough fiber, and ketones cause this stench,” he explains. “While not terribly dangerous for otherwise healthy people, ketosis is not where you want your body to be for any length of time.”

What happens when you have carb flu?

If you’ve been pushing away all breads, wraps and potatoes, you might notice for the first few days, you feel fine because your body still has glycogen, which is the store of carbohydrates your body reserves just in case you aren't getting enough food (or start a fad diet). However, Ayoob explains this stockpile only lasts for a few days before your body starts to burn mostly fat and protein, which is a tougher task. That’s why you start experiencing those exhausted feelings almost immediately. Depending on how much you want to stomach, Ayoob reminds us that coming off of a low-carb diet won’t instantly give you a boost of energy.

“You may still feel somewhat lethargic until you up your carb intake, even if not to where it was. Increasing carbs to 40 percent of your diet would prevent carb flu,” he says.

The bottom line

Ayoob says even in the search for the ideal filter-free body or shape, carbs still have a place in every diet. Because of the recent movement against carbs, this essential part of our diets has fear surrounding it.

“You’re leaving out whole food groups if you avoid carbs. Beans, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, they’re all carb-rich but healthful and loaded with antioxidants and nutrients,” he says. “People can lose weight from a super-low-carb diet, but there’s a better way... without placing severe limits or even eliminating nutritional food groups. Aim for balance instead.”

Summer is forever associated with sunny afternoons drinking a glass of wine — specifically rosé. It's the quintessential summer beverage and super-on-trend right now, so it's not too surprising that restaurants and brands are adding it to their menus.

The latest restaurant to jump on the rosé bandwagon is probably more well known for their breadsticks and salad than their fancy wine selection, but starting today, Olive Garden is launching their very own rosé wine. It's called Head to Head Rosé, and it was created by Giulia and Andrea Zingarelli of Rocca delle Macíe winery in Tuscany, which is actually the winery already supplying all the other Olive Garden-branded wine they have on their menu.

“I have grown up alongside Olive Garden,” Giulia Zingarelli said in a statement. “Each Olive Garden restaurant is like a little piece of Italy in the United States. I hope people who dine at Olive Garden will remember Italy if they have already visited or get inspired to plan a trip to discover a land full of history, culture, food, and wine.”

“Rosé is trending now,” said Olive Garden director of beverage strategy Robyn Albert in a press release. “We wanted to launch our new wine in summer because rosés are refreshing in hot weather. And bringing in Giulia, a female millennial herself, made for a perfect partnership to develop the new wine.”

The rosé, which has fruity notes like apple and cherry and a deep pink hue, is available now and just waiting to be paired with your bottomless salad. Cheers!

On the surface, it looks like Jenna Dewan might be spreading her single-girl wings after her split from Channing Tatum in April. She got a breakup haircut, dropped her married surname and is throwing herself into her work, which includes promoting the upcoming season of her TV show, World of Dance, where she'll be a co-judge alongside Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo.

Now, in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Dewan makes it clear that everything she’s doing right now is about excitement, not escape.

“I feel a sense of joy and freedom and excitement, truly, about a new chapter in my life. And I have no attachment to how that’s going to look or what it’s going to be. I feel really open, and I feel hopeful,” Dewan told the magazine.

The actor and dancer also said her divorce was not about her marriage, ironic as that sounds. “I was always very happy being a wife,” she said. But she was plagued by the same questions that haunt us all: “Who are you? What do you want to give to the world? What excites you? Those feelings started bubbling up for me, naturally, so I really wanted to expand my life and myself. And that was my journey, no one else's.”

It’s a good time for Dewan to be asking those questions of herself and her career, which is busier than ever. Besides co-judging World of Dance, which was just renewed for a third season, she’s been cast in a musical drama called Mixtape, is set to appear in the upcoming film Berlin, I Love You and oversees her own production company.

She told Harper’s Bazaar that this is all the result of a focused effort that began two years ago with a trip to Peru. After working there with the nonprofit PlantMed, she returned to the U.S. with a sense of purpose. “Alright, let’s make your life the best version of your life it can be. Let’s think broader. Let’s think bigger,” she said, adding “I’m a very ambitious, passionate person. And when an idea comes in, and once you see the light, it’s really hard to un-see the light.”

Fans of Dewan's may be happy to hear her positive take on both her new life and her marriage, especially since it seems so in line with the positive tone she (and Tatum) have been striking about the topic of their split since they announced it on Instagram.

It’s exciting to see this new Jenna Dewan taking on the world, and we’ll be watching closely to see how things unfold for her. Best of luck to her as she faces the future with excitement and purpose.

The herpes virus has long been shrouded in the mystery of fear. Whether they're cold sores or genital herpes, even the idea can send people running in the other direction. Unfortunately, while it's important to take precautions to keep yourself safe, there are also a lot of misconceptions about the virus.

Here are some important facts about herpes you should know before you jump to conclusions.

More: Sexual Health in Your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s & Beyond

1. It's super common

That's right, 48 percent of people have the oral herpes virus, according to a report published in February 2018 by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One out of every 8 people has genital herpes. As many as 90 percent of Americans have been exposed to the virus, according to the National Institutes of Health.

2. Outbreaks aren't the only symptoms

Many men and women don't know they have herpes because they don't have the usual symptoms. In fact, the CDC reports some may not even experience an outbreak. During the first outbreak, many people experience flu-like symptoms, including a fever, headaches, body aches or swollen glands. Other symptoms can include pain in the lower back, unusual vaginal discharge or burning when urinating.

3. Pregnancy brings on outbreaks

Both cold sore and genital herpes outbreaks can be more common during pregnancy. If you experience cold sores while pregnant, consult your doctor before taking any medications.

4. Avoid facial peels during an outbreak

Believe it or not, you should avoid facial peels or waxing if you have an outbreak because treatments like this can spread the herpes virus and cause outbreaks all over your face. Disturbing? Absolutely. Good to know? Most definitely. "If you have a history of cold sores, you may want to talk to your dermatologist before you even attempt waxing your lip," Rebecca Kazin, a board-certified dermatologist with the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, tells Women's Health.

5. Outbreaks are contagious from the first tingle

It isn't just the blister that will spread the virus. The virus can actually be spread from the first tingle until it is completely healed, which can take weeks. From the moment you feel an outbreak, you should take precautions not to spread the virus.

6. You can't spread herpes to your dog

Dogs can get herpes, but it is a different strain of the virus than the one humans get. You cannot spread the virus to your dog, and your dog can't spread the virus to you. So no worries, dog lovers — his kisses may not be the cleanest in the world, but you're not going to get a cold sore from loving on your pup.

7. It's not the end of the world

Whether they're cold sores or genital herpes, the symptoms are manageable. Though there is no cure for herpes, outbreaks can be managed and symptoms greatly reduced.

8. Herpes isn't always recurring

Dr. Vanessa Cullins, formerly the vice president of external medical affairs at Planned Parenthood and currently an obstetrician-gynecologist in New York, told Teen Vogue that some people don't experience outbreak recurrence. "Some people rarely have recurrences. Others have them often. Herpes is most likely to recur in the first year after infection. Recurrences may be more frequent for people with weakened immune systems," Cullins explained.

The webpage says, “the video submitted should display entrant’s personality, creativity, passion for grilling, and explain/show what the dish is.” It also advises that the dish has to be an original recipe.
