John Cena Is Just as Heartbroken Over His Breakup as You Are

It's been 11 days since John Cena and Nikki Bella publicly announced their split on April 15, and we're still reeling from the news. On Saturday, Nikki and twin sister Brie Bella attended the Nirvana Food and Wine Festival in Arizona, where Brie spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about the breakup... while Nikki stuck to Instagram to express her feelings. Now, Cena has spoken up about how he feels, and no surprise here: He's heartbroken.

While promoting Bumblebee: The Movie at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Cena spoke with several reporters about the split. Cena told Extra's Mark Wright he will always love Bella and said, "The one take away — and it sucks — but the one take away I can have for me is that... because I feel so heartbroken, I know I was in love and I will never be able to take that away.”

Cena said he wants people to know, “When you feel down, just hang in there and fight through it… every low comes with a high.”

In another interview with TMZ reporters, Cena made similar comments. He said, "I love Nicole with all my heart and the split's tough." He added, "It's a tough time but that's life... We all go through highs and we all go through lows."

Since the breakup, Cena hasn't spent much time in the public eye, but he has posted a handful of times on Twitter — to share inspirational messages as well as a weightlifting video in honor of his 41st birthday on last Monday. The official Bella twins Twitter retweeted the video, which perhaps points to Brie's insistence to Us Weekly that Cena will "always be family."

CinemaCon was Cena's first public appearance since the announcement of the split, and his social media presence has been scattered. Meanwhile, Nikki hasn't spoken to reporters, but she's steered her focus on Instagram away from the breakup and toward bluer skies, like accomplishing her personal goals.

How to Safely Get Rid of Unused Prescription Medication

$

Open almost any medicine cabinet, and you're likely to find a few old prescription bottles with unused medication. While we know we're supposed to finish rounds of antibiotics, other medicines — like those prescribed for pain or anxiety — are typically taken on an as-needed basis, and when they're no longer needed, they just sit there collecting dust. But how do you safely dispose of them? Turns out there are right ways and wrong ways — and being safe about it matters more than you think.

Why safe disposal matters

When used correctly (i.e., as instructed by a physician), prescription medication can treat serious illnesses and save lives. But in the wrong hands, they could also do a lot of harm. In fact, Scientific American reported that three-quarters of all opioid misuse starts when someone takes medication that was not prescribed for them and obtained from a family member, friend or dealer. Even if you think no one you know would ever get drugs that way, you're better safe than sorry and can rest assured you did at least a small thing to help curb the opioid crisis.

More: Why Some Cold Medications Moved (& Stayed) Behind the Counter

Also, if you have kids living in or visiting your house, it's probably a good idea to have all medications out of reach, and if it's something that's expired and/or you're not longer using, it's best to get rid of it so it doesn't end up in the wrong (small) hands.

How to safely get rid of medications

Official take-back days and sites

The preferred method by both the Food and Drug Administration and Drug Enforcement Agency is to hand your unused prescriptions to an official take-back event or site. This Saturday, April 28 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, operated by the DEA, where locations throughout the U.S. will take any medications off your hands. There is a search function on their website that allows users to enter their zip code and find their nearest take-back location. While these events are held every October and April, if you have medication you'd like to dispose of during other parts of the year, the DEA has approved sites that take back medication year-round.

Disposal in household trash

If you need to dispose of a medication immediately and/or there aren't any nearby take-back sites, the next best option, according to the FDA, is to throw it away in your household trash. But don't just pop the bottle in the garbage can; follow these steps instead:

  • Mix the pills (but do not crush them) with an unpalatable substance like dirt, cat litter or used coffee grounds.
  • Place the pill mixture in another container, like a sealed plastic bag.
  • Dispose of the sealed container in your household trash.

It's important not to forget the prescription bottle, though. The FDA recommends scratching out all personal information on the label, like your name, address, physician and the type of medication.

Flushing

If you've seen someone dispose of pills in a movie or on a TV show, chances are they did it by flushing them down the toilet. This option is complicated.

There is a list of certain medications the FDA deems so dangerous they should be flushed immediately when they are no longer needed and a take-back site is not an option.

MoreWhat to Do if You Encounter an Opioid Overdose

But for medications not on the FDA's list, it's best not to flush. For starters, we already have enough prescription medication in our water system thanks to us taking medications and then peeing them out according to an article in Popular Science. But while treatment plants take care of that type of contamination, introducing whole pills into the water system is a whole different story and not great for sea life.

So, while you're in spring-cleaning mode, you might as well go through that medicine cabinet (or shoebox of old prescriptions) and get rid of those you don't need anymore. You'll have more space for new products and will be keeping people safe.

Ikea Is Having a Tea Experience You Don’t Want to Miss

When’s the last time you put aside your coffee and just enjoyed a cup of tea? Maybe it’s been a while. Maybe you’re looking for a new way to love your morning cuppa. Well, Ikea has you covered — they’re offering a special ongoing tea event this May, and it sounds like a blast.

The concept for the event is based around the idea of fika, a Swedish term for what we predicted would become a big trend back in December — and the easiest way to explain it is a short social break when you enjoy sweet treats and a warm drink that is totally separate from your work lunch break. It’s kind of like a coffee break, but it’s more about connecting with your friends and coworkers, and the feeling of it is hard to express in English.

More: How to Make Your Favorite Starbucks Bakery Items at Home

Ikea wants to let people experience the whole essence of fika firsthand, so they’ve added it to their lineup of family events. There’s only one catch: The event is taking place in Manchester, U.K. It's also already completely booked.

More: Is Gezellig the New Hygge?

OK, OK, so most of us won’t be able to attend unless they expand it to a store near us, so I guess we’ll have to settle on filling ourselves on Ikea’s Swedish meatballs. Darn. We'll just have to create a fika experience on our own. But in case you want to know what the Brits are getting, the afternoon tea menu includes:

  • Seaweed pearl and egg canapé (vegetarian)/prawn and egg canapé
  • Cheese open sandwich (vegetarian)/meatball open sandwich
  • Krustader with cheese and gherkin (vegetarian)/Krustader with herring
  • Daim cake (vegetarian)
  • Cinnamon bun (vegetarian)
  • Kafferprep pastries and biscuits
  • A lesson in fika and how it became a tradition in Sweden

All that, and it’s only £5 (or about $7), and they’ll walk away with a free fika cookbook. *Sigh* Do you think Meghan Markle might be able to get us in?

An Update on George H. W. Bush's Health After His Recent Hospitalization

The Bush family experienced another health scare recently, but things thankfully seem to be looking up as of Thursday, April 26. Just one day after the funeral service for former First Lady Barbara Bush, her husband, former president George H. W. Bush, was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital. Bush reportedly had contracted an infection that spread to his blood, and he was placed in the ICU for treatment. To say that the last few weeks have been harrowing for Bush and his family, as evidenced by this succession of events, is putting it mildly.

More: George H. W. Bush Hospitalized 5 Days After Barbara's Death

According to Us Weekly, the 93-year-old former president has since improved in his condition and is in relatively good spirits. On Wednesday, April 25, a spokesman for the Bush family tweeted that he has been moved into a regular patient room, where he is "expected to continue his recovery ... for several more days."

Update on George H. W. Bush's hospitalization

According to the statement, Bush is "alert and talking to hospital staff" and "is more focused on the Houston Rockets closing out their playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves" than on his health. It's good to see Bush has a little pep in his step, so to speak. Better still, it sounds like he's feeling himself again, like that time he went parachuting for his 90th birthday. Despite several hospitalizations in recent years (including this one) for issues with shortness of breath, he's still fighting.

That's a good thing, for him and for his family, especially after the death of their matriarch. In mourning her loss, the Bush family has rallied together to celebrate her her legacy. The day before his current hospital stay, Bush Sr. attended his wife's funeral wearing a pair of socks decorated in little books, which surely had to be a nod to Barbara Bush's tireless work promoting literacy through the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

On April 18, Bush released a statement on the death of his late wife, which read, “I always knew Barbara was the most beloved woman in the world, and in fact I used to tease her that I had a complex about that fact. But the truth is the outpouring of love and friendship being directed at The Enforcer is lifting us all up. We have faith she is in heaven, and we know life will go on — as she would have it. So cross the Bushes off your worry list.”

The Bushes were married for 73 years — the longest presidential marriage in history. They had six children together including one president, George W. Bush, and one presidential hopeful, Jeb Bush.

Something sweet

We can't stop thinking about (and salivating over) these strawberry scones, a recipe we perfected back in 2016 but honestly cannot stop thinking about to this day. Look at these scones. You know you want to add them to your brunch menu.

Strawberry Scones

Strawberry scones recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  •  4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
  • 1 cup quartered strawberries
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar and salt together. Cut butter into small cubes and mix into the flour mixture with your hands. The butter pieces should be about the size of a pea. Gently fold in the strawberries. Pour in the heavy cream and mix until the dough just comes together.
  3. Flour your counter or a cutting board. Using a rolling pin, press the dough so it's about 3/4-inch thick. Using the top of a drinking glass, cut the dough into circles. Place the scones on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake the scones for 15 minutes or until they're nicely browned on top. Serve warm.

Something savory

What's a brunch without a quiche? Our bacon and leek quiche recipe is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. The best part? You can make this ahead of time and pop it in the oven right before your brunch.

Bacon & Leek Quiche

Bacon and leek quiche recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 piecrust, store-bought is fine or you can try our recipe
  • 1 pound thick-cut or slab bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 2 medium leeks, white and light green parts, sliced and rinsed
  • 6 eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Roll out the piecrust so that it hangs over the sides of an 8- or 9-inch pie pan. Drape the crust over the pan and gently press it into the pan. Fold and crimp the overhanging crust. Place a piece of parchment paper larger than the pan on top of the crust and fill it with 1 pound of dry beans or pie weights.
  3. Bake the crust for 15 minutes. Remove the parchment and weights and bake another 5 minutes, until the bottom of the crust is dry and edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  4. Meanwhile, in a skillet over medium heat, fry the bacon in 2 or 3 single-layer batches. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate. Pour out all but enough bacon grease to coat the bottom of the skillet, then add the leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are tender and beginning to brown at the edges. Transfer the leeks to the plate with the bacon.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and the milk until well mixed. Stir in the bacon, leeks and cheese, and pour the mixture into the pie crust.
  6. Bake until the filling is golden and no longer jiggles, about 45 minutes. Cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

Prince William's Recent Behavior in Church Is Hilariously Relatable

Dads all across America are falling asleep — at soccer games, school performances, parent-teacher conferences, church masses, ballet recitals and sometimes at the dinner table. Apparently, things aren't all that different across the pond, at least not for father of three Prince William.

More: Did Prince William Just Reveal the Name of Baby No. 3?

Although he told reporters at the Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving on Wednesday that his newborn son is sleeping "reasonably well" and his family of five is "in good form, luckily," the Duke of Cambridge seemed to nod off during the service at Westminster Abbey. Oops! He surely received a scolding for that.

People posted a video to their Instagram showing Prince William sat beside Prince Harry's fiancée, Meghan Markle, clearly struggling to maintain his energy levels during the service. Check out the blinky eyes. Prince William is all of us in our early morning classes and at über-long work meetings.

Prince William nods off at Westminster Abbey

Prince William nods off at Westminster Abbey

We can't stop watching this video. This poor, sleepy, balding man. It's OK, Prince William. People's caption is so appropriate. "Life with a newborn," they wrote, complete with the necessary emojis.

According to InStyle, Prince William was "all smiles" as he chatted with Markle and the crowd before entering the church, but once he sat down, all bets were off. Prince William currently has a newborn, a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old at home. Sleep is probably hard to come by, and Westminster Abbey's high-backed cushioned chairs look just comfy enough for a nap... especially since church services are usually nice and toasty.

More: Kate Middleton & Prince William Shared a Rare PDA Moment, & We All Missed It

Of course, this isn't William's first totally relatable, totally hilarious, totally awkward public moment, nor do we suspect that it will be his last. On a ski trip to Verbier, Switzerland, in 2017, he was caught on camera doing some kind of... arm... dance? We're not entirely sure what to call it, but it was peak dad...

... and so was nodding off in church, but we have some questions. What happened after this cameraperson stopped filming? We see Prince William jerk himself awake in the video, but did he fall asleep again and drool a little bit? Did he snore just loudly enough to startle himself awake? Did Meghan Markle nudge him with her elbow?

Maybe we'll never know, but we do know this: we're desperate to know the name of royal baby No. 3, which Kensington Palace has yet to announce as of this writing.

Here’s What You Need to Know About the Massive Gmail Update

$

0

Big news for Gmail users: Google has totally overhauled the look of the email service, and people are comparing the update to Microsoft Outlook — a much-improved comparison considering the previous functionality was a little dated.

And the new look? It's pretty great.

New gmail design

(I mean, has my spam folder ever looked so pretty? Never!)

But looks aren't everything, as you know, and what we're really happy about is all the new functionality the redesign incorporates. Here are the features most likely to improve your email experience.

The best features

Snooze emails

In the desktop version, you can hover over a tiny clock and snooze an email to reappear later when you have time to deal with it.

More: Amazon Will Now Deliver Packages to Your Car in 37 Cities

Nudge

Google will try to intelligently recognize emails that are high-importance and send you a friendly “nudge” if it thinks you’ve forgotten to respond.

Open attachments without opening an email

This is just a tiny time-saving tweak, but you can now open an attachment without having to open the email thread.

More: My Phone Ruined My Relationship

Tool panel for Tasks, Calendar & Keep

If, like me, you’ve been frustrated by toggling between Tasks and Calendar to get your workday straight, the new design integrates these (and Keep!) in a toolbar on the right-hand side of Gmail, allowing you to easily check in on what you need to do for the day and what your calendar looks like. Another amazing update? Google officially released a Google Tasks app for iPhone and Android. Praise be!

Confidential mode & other business-focused features

Confidential mode allows you to set an expiration date for sensitive emails you send or revoke them. It works by having the email live in your inbox and sending a link to the receiver. You can also turn on two-factor authentication, which will require the person to authenticate access to the email by passcode sent via text message.

More: The Amazon Prime Perks You're Not Taking Advantage Of

Another professional add-on is integrated rights management, the ability to block the forwarding, copying, downloading and/or printing of an email. That won’t protect people who really want to pass your info along from doing it, but it will hopefully keep more users from accidentally leaking info.

These new modes aren’t ready for immediate use. Google is hoping to have them ready in the coming weeks.

Improved security

Google has reportedly beefed up their warning systems for phishing scams — the practice of emails fraudulently appearing to be reputable companies in order to get personal information like credit card numbers and passwords.

How to enable the new Gmail

It's pretty simple: Look at your desktop Gmail, go to the gear cog in the top-right corner and click on “Try the new Gmail.”

Note that this might not be available to all users — it’s only being offered to some people at this time, and a larger rollout will be coming later. If you don’t see the option, be on the lookout for an announcement for full availability to users.

If your business uses Gmail, have an administrator activate it through the G Suite. You can find instructions for that on The Verge.

If you try the new look out and don’t want to keep it, you can change it back the same way you got it in the first place.

Happy emailing!

Ever since Netflix premiered the new Queer Eye series in February, the new Fab Five have really won us over with their on-screen chemistry. These five are fierce, fabulous, and talented, and it's easy to see why the guys they help are so charmed by them. What's even better is that the new Fab Five really are friends behind the scenes, according to series foodie Antoni Porowski.

Porowski chatted with E! News on Tuesday, where he dished about how he and his co-stars had "weird electricity" from the first time they were in a room together. "We felt something special. We were weirdly finishing each other's sentences," Porowski said, adding, "We're all different, but we still manage to get along really well."

He told reporters that the cast has a lot of fun interacting on social media because they "don't get to see each other a lot in between working." Anyone who follows the Fab Five on Twitter knows what Porowski means, because the little interactions we see are just perfect.

Take, for example, how designer Bobby Berk reacted to Porowski's saucy shoot for Gay Times:

Porowski even breaks out the emojis for France's announcement that Queer Eye was renewed for season 2:

Oh, yeah. That's friendship at its Twitter best. Porowski told E! News, "[Twitter] is such a fun platform to troll on each other's accounts, to support each other, bring each other up, down and then pick each other back up again." It's good to know that the Fab Five really do love each other, especially since the new Queer Eye is an important, culturally-relevant update on its predecessor. We need that refreshing positivity in our lives, our streams, and our social media feeds.

How Infertility & Trying to Conceive Changes Sex

$
0
0

Nothing kills a lady-boner faster than having to screw on command. Before I started trying to conceive, I was an “anytime, any place, any excuse” kind of woman. (I think that’s one of the reasons my husband married me.) My husband and I got busy in the ocean in Hawaii, his office after hours and the bathroom at our friends’ wedding (gross, but in our defense, we’d had a lot of Champagne).

Then I had to go and ruin it by wanting a baby. Suddenly, sex was a chore. It had to be done on a schedule, and we couldn’t just yank up our pants and get on with things afterward. Plus, there were stakes. If we did it wrong, I’d still be childless in my mid-30s, and did you know your fertility really starts to decline around then? (Said everyone who’s had a conversation with a woman in her 30s ever.)

More: Mother's Day in the Wake of Infertility

Somehow, my husband and I managed to endure three years of increasingly desperate baby-making sex and still end up liking each other. We even still bone for fun sometimes! During those years, I learned a lot about the do's and don’ts of TTC (trying to conceive) sex — and later, when we turned to fertility treatments, I had the chance to pose a lot of embarrassing sex questions to doctors. Here’s everything I learned:

1. Do not endure 3 years of increasingly desperate baby-making sex

According to a study by Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in the Netherlands, doctors recommend having timed intercourse for 12 months (six if you’re over 35) before seeking medical treatment. I knew this, yet somehow kept thinking if I just changed my diet, got a new ovulation-predictor kit or tried acupuncture/yoga/meditation/therapy, I’d get knocked up.

Don’t be like me. Bone for a year, then see a doctor. Your sex life (and your sanity) will thank you.

2. Get an ovulation-predictor kit

Ovulation-predictor kits take the guesswork out of when to do it — no more taking your temperature and trying to figure out if your cervical mucus is “cloudy” or “egg-white.” You pee on a stick every morning for the first half of your cycle, and it reads the luteinizing hormone levels in your urine to tell you how close you are to ovulating. If you’re close, you get it on. If not, you get to watch The Office in your sweats.

3. Don’t expect honeymoon sex

Honestly, baby-making sex probably won’t blow your mind. I’m not going to tell you to spice it up with lingerie or dirty talk, because that’s just going to feel contrived — and TTC sex is already pretty contrived. When I was in the trenches, I liked to think of it as masturbation with another person. You do it so you’ll stop feeling crazy, and the goal is for you to come. (Don’t worry about your partner's orgasm. It’ll happen.)

Instead of trying to experiment, resort to your best-of playlist: the sequence most likely to get you aroused and the position most likely to get you off. You can save the creative stuff for the two-week wait when you need to blow off steam.

4. Please come

According to a joint study by researchers at University of Queensland in Australia and Abo Akedemi University in Finland, the jury’s still out on whether your orgasm can actually help push sperm to your egg. But there’s one thing it definitely can do: help you chill the hell out. TTC is stressful, and orgasms are a proven stress-buster. So, when you’re trying to make a baby, remember to do whatever it takes to get off: whether you’re using your partner’s appendage, his fingers or tongue, your fingers (or tongue if you’re a contortionist) or a vibe. Because honestly (and this should go without saying), you deserve to orgasm every time you have sex — always.

5. Oral is A-OK

For a while, oral sex was banned from my TTC routine because I’d read that saliva can slow down sperm. When I asked my reproductive endocrinologist about it, she looked at me like I was crazy and said it would have to be, like, a cup full of spit. So, by all means, go down on each other if it helps get you in the mood. Just (duh) don’t let him come in your mouth.

MoreTrying to Conceive? The Important Test Your Gynecologist Isn't Telling You About

6. But be kinda careful with lube

Some ingredients in commercial lubricant really can slow sperm down, warns Kazim R. Chohan, director of the Andrology Laboratory at the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse via Reuters. That doesn’t mean you should skip it, just go for a TTC-friendly lube like Pre-Seed.

7. Snuggle for 15 minutes after

Contrary to popular belief, there’s no evidence that spending an hour after sex with your legs up in the air like a roast chicken is more likely to get you pregnant. However, there is evidence (via a Dutch study published in the British Medical Journal) that lying down for 15 minutes increased pregnancy outcomes in women undergoing intrauterine insemination. Whether or not it really helps, it’s a great time to reconnect with your husband: laugh about the awkwardness of TTC, bitch about that coworker who keeps stealing your yogurt from the fridge or dream up baby names.

While it’s unlikely that anyone’s baby-making sex will inspire the next Fifty Shades of Grey, it still has benefits beyond the obvious. At best, you get a baby. And at worst — hey, at least you get laid!

What Happens Now That Bill Cosby Was Convicted on All 3 Counts?

$

In the first major sexual assault trial of the #MeToo era, Bill Cosby has been found guilty of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand, who accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2004. The Hollywood Reporter says that after 14 hours of deliberation, a Pennsylvania jury returned with the verdict: guilty on three counts of sexual assault.

More: Kathie Lee Gifford Says She "Doesn't Judge" Bill Cosby & Harvey Weinstein

Last June, a different jury deadlocked, leading the court to declare a mistrial in the case against Cosby. This time the basic tenants of the case remained the same, but new evidence was admitted for the jury to consider. Last year, just one woman who had accused Cosby of drugging and assaulting her was allowed to take the stand and testify that this behavior was a pattern for the accused. This time, five women were allowed to testify.

A former Temple University colleague of Constand's also testified. The witness claimed that the accuser privately admitted to framing Cosby to extract a settlement. It was revealed during the trial that in 2006, Cosby paid Constand nearly $3.4 million to settle her civil claims.

Over two dozen witnesses took the stand in this trial, though Cosby himself did not testify. His lawyers attempted to convince the jury that he was out of town on the night of the incident in 2004.

Now that he has been convicted, Cosby awaits sentencing by the judge overseeing the case. Each sexual assault charge carries a prison term of up to 10 years, though the judge can sentence Cosby to serve that time concurrently, which would shorten his overall time behind bars.

More: Lisa Bonet Claims There Was Once a "Sinister, Shadow Energy" With Bill Cosby

However, even one decade behind bars could effectively be a life sentence for Cosby, who is currently 80 years old and in declining health. Last year, he told the NNPA Newswire that he is completely blind, and rumors have been swirling for some time that he may be showing signs of dementia.

Unfortunately, a guilty verdict is not the end; according to Rolling Stone, Cosby's lawyer, Thomas A. Mesereau Jr., said, "[T]he fight is not over." He said he would appeal the court's decision, which will delay the sentencing process.

After the guilty verdict was handed down, THR reports that Cosby launched into a tirade, calling District Attorney Kevin Steele an "asshole." Meanwhile, video surfaced on social media of women leaving the courtroom after the verdict weeping and embracing.

Following accusations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in October, a slew of powerful men have lost work in the wake of Tarana Burke's #MeToo movement gaining steam, but recently, men like Charlie Rose have proven that when it comes to believing women, our cultural memory is short and forgetting is long.

Cosby's conviction is hopefully the first in a long line of cases in which justice is — if belatedly — served. The question now is whether he will ever actually see a day behind bars for his crime against Constand (and the dozens of other women he's allegedly violated over the years).

This Amazing Story About a Mom Who Didn't Know She Was Pregnant Is Going Viral

Not all heroes wear capes; some, like new mother Tia Freeman, arrive on the scene equipped with only their carry-on luggage and a few hotel bath towels. The Nashville-based woman gained Twitter notoriety this week after sharing her 100 percent certifiably bonkers story about how she delivered her own baby during a layover in Turkey earlier this year. As your friendly flight attendant might say, "Buckle up, because things are about to get wild."

Freeman kicked off the enthralling tale by noting that she spent most of her pregnancy... not having any idea she was pregnant.

By the time she realized she was, in fact, with child, she'd already lined up a sweet vacation to Germany to visit her good friend, University of Tennessee football player Jakob Johnson, and she "was not about to waste international flight money."

So, Freeman boarded the plane and strapped in for what she assumed would be a turbulence-free flight. That assumption changed, however, when she started getting cramps. Because she must have a uterus of steel, she initially wrote off the pain as simple food poisoning caused by the airline's salmon dinner entrée. Natch.

"No I don’t know if it was [the] salmon, the flight, or it was just my time but out of no where [sic] I start cramping up," she wrote. "I’ve still got like an hour left before we land. I just knew I had food poisoning. Y’all I was HURT."

So she decided she'd just sleep it off. (Again, how does one sleep through contractions?!)

Anyway, by the time she got off of the plane, she realized that this pain was not the work of a rotten piece of fish.

"I'm literally gripping the railing trying to make it through the lines," she recalled. "At this point I feel like I'm about to pass out. I'm sweating. I feel like I have to vomit. I'm going through it. Then I'm like wait a minute bitch are you in labor?!!!"

Freeman, who doesn't speak Turkish (I mean, how many American tourists do?) decided she'd work through the pain and go straight to her hotel room instead of asking to see a medical professional. Insert grimace emoji here.

"I make it to my hotel & now I’m sure I’m in labor. There is no way in the world I’m not in labor because I can barely standup at this point," she wrote. "So I’m in a foreign country, where no one speaks english, I don’t know this country’s emergency number, & I have no clue what to do."

Oh, but just you wait: She totally did know what to do. Freeman got online and looked up how to deliver a baby on YouTube. Like you do. She filled up the bathtub, grabbed a towel to bite down on, got as comfortable as she could and started pushing.

Then, boom — she gave birth to a little boy. After passing her placenta in the hotel toilet (and subsequently bagging it in a disposable sanitary napkin bag, of course), Freeman looked up how to cut an umbilical cord. Again, this woman just delivered a child all by herself in a Turkish hotel room, and her thoughts were entirely practical and rational. At this point, I'm wondering if she's even human.

After boiling water, sanitizing a shoelace and tying it around the cord, Freeman cut the dang thing off and started cleaning up the bathroom before calling it a night.

The next day, she went to the airport, where the shocked staff assumed she was part of a human trafficking scheme. Luckily, medical professionals were able to prove that she had, in fact, just pushed a human child out of her body mere hours before. She then got in touch with the U.S. Embassy, which helped her obtain a birth certificate for her son, Xavier.

Because she was in no condition to fly back to the U.S., Turkish Airlines came through and booked her a two-week stay in a hotel as well as a return business-class flight. She and her son are now safely back home, and while the rest of us are freaking out over how bizarre this ordeal was, Freeman is still 100 percent way too chill about everything.

"I still don't understand what's so shocking about my delivery story," she tweeted. "Lol maybe it'll set in one day."

The Game of Thrones Spinoff Is Going to Be Fiery (Literally)

Even as he continues to push back the expected publication date for the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire book series, George R.R. Martin just can't help teasing Game of Thrones fans with tidbits of information about Westeros. The author posted on his personal blog on Wednesday about the upcoming Fire & Blood, which is a 989-page look into Targaryen family history.

More: Brace Yourself for So Much Death in Game of Thrones’ Final Season

It's important to note that Fire & Blood is not a novel. It's an "imaginary history" in line with J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion, which was an extensive history of Middle Earth. Sorry, Thrones fans — the HBO series is still way ahead of the books, and it looks like it's going to stay that way for a while.

HBO announced in January that Thrones will return for its eighth and final season in 2019. Martin did not announce a publication date for the long-awaited Winds of Winter, the sixth book in Ice and Fire; he wrote in his post that fans are "going to have to keep waiting" for that one. (Say it with us: ugh.)

But he's keeping things interesting by providing potential fodder for a proposed Thrones spinoff series. TVLine notes that HBO has deals with four writers to explore different parts of Westerosi history, and Fire & Blood could definitely provide groundwork for that.

In his blog post, Martin wrote, Fire & Blood "covers all the Targaryen kings from Aegon I (the Conqueror) to the regency of Aegon III (the Dragonbane), along with their wives, wars, siblings, children, friends, rivals, laws, travels, and sundry other matters. For those not up on your Westerosi history, that’s Aegon I, Aenys, Maegor the Cruel, Jaehaerys I (the Conciliator), Viserys I, Aegon II (and Rhaenyra), and Aegon III (the regency). Oh, and there are dragons too. Lots of dragons."

Daenerys' dragons have been major recurring characters on Thrones since she received their eggs as a wedding gift in Season 1, so it seems safe to say we're all here for more dragons. The question is: How deep will HBO go with its spinoff series? If there won't be any familiar characters, how far back will the series start? Will it bear any resemblance to Thrones in tone or look or cast?

Martin notes in his post that Fire & Blood doesn't follow a traditional narrative since it isn't structured as a novel... so it will be interesting to see what comes from that in the TV adaptation, if anything. The post also contains a look at the U.S. cover as well as an interior illustration from artist Doug Wheatley.

Fire & Blood will be available in stores November 20.

Here's What's Wrong With Tammy Duckworth’s Maternity Leave Dilemma

$

By Annamarie Houlis

When it comes to women’s share of representation in parliament, the United States ranks 104 out of over 190 countries. That's because, of the 115 congresses in the history of the country with 1,972 senators representing their states in the past 229 years, only 51 of those senators have been women. And there have only been 10 members of Congress who have given birth while in office (all the births happened while the female lawmakers were serving in the House).

Among those women are Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, Susan Molinari, Blanche Lambert Lincoln, Enid Greene Waldholtz, Linda Sánchez, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jaime Herrera Beutler and now-Senator Tammy Duckworth.

Duckworth, a retired lieutenant colonel who served a total of 23 years in the Illinois Army National Guard, delivered her firstborn daughter on Nov. 18, 2014, when she was 47 years old and a member of the House. While three of the 10 House women went on to serve in the Senate (Lincoln, Gillibrand and, of course, Duckworth), Duckworth has now become the country’s first sitting senator to have a baby while serving in the chamber.

She gave birth to her second child, Maile Pearl Bowlsbey, on Monday, April 9. And now, Duckworth's maternity leave dilemma is exposing the sexism that is still rampant in our country's politics.

More: Tammy Duckworth Becomes First U.S. Senator to Give Birth While in Office

The Illinois senator explained in a February interview with Politico’s Women Rule podcast, “I can’t technically take maternity leave — because if I take maternity leave, then I won’t be allowed to sponsor legislation or vote during that time period.” At the time, Duckworth reportedly said she had planned to take 12 weeks off and try and change Senate rules to allow her to work while on parental leave. But Duckworth was forced to choose between taking care of her newborn or her constituency.

Up until Wednesday, April 18, if she decided to carry on with work, she wouldn't have been able to bring her daughter along. The Senate had barred children from its floor, which would have also meant that Duckworth wouldn't have been allowed to breastfeed while sitting in session — an act that politicians elsewhere in the world have long been doing. Take, for example, Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir, a new mom and member of the Icelandic parliament for the center-right Iceland Independence Party. Konráðsdóttir has taken the podium while breastfeeding her baby daughter, delivering her remarks while her daughter breastfed undisturbed.

According to a translation by Euronews, Konráðsdóttir explained: "She has been with me at the Parliament almost since she was born, so my fellow MPs are used to her. She has attended numerous committee meetings with me over the final days of this parliament. Usually she is very calm and when we cast our votes she is sound asleep. So there have never been any incidents before."

Fortunately, in a rare move this week, the U.S. Senate voted to change longstanding rules to allow newborns onto the Senate floor during votes too. The rule change (which was voted through by unanimous consent) intends to accommodate senators with newborn babies, like Duckworth, by allowing them to finally be able to bring a child under 1 year old onto the Senate floor and breastfeed them during votes, just as Konráðsdóttir has done.

More: 5 Politicians Fighting Against Breastfeeding Discrimination

Duckworth spearheaded the push for the rule change and, according to CNN, reportedly said her fellow lawmakers have helped to "bring the Senate into the 21st Century by recognizing that sometimes new parents also have responsibilities at work."

And thanks to the change, Duckworth is able to take maternity leave; she's doing so in Washington, D.C., rather than in Illinois, to be able to be on hand and available to cast her vote in the Senate if needed.

"By ensuring that no Senator will be prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities simply because they have a young child, the Senate is leading by example and sending the important message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies," Duckworth said in a statement after the vote.

Duckworth's dilemma has been a reflection of working mothers', many of whom have jobs with poor parental leave policies, issues across the country.

Out of 193 countries in the United Nations, only a small handful do not have a national paid parental leave law: New Guinea, Suriname, a few South Pacific island nations and the United States. Meanwhile, mothers are entitled to 17 weeks of paid maternity leave, on average, in most advanced nations according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Under the Family Medical Leave Act, U.S. employers with 50 or more workers must allow parents 12 weeks of job-protected leave annually to care for a newborn. While this means those individuals can take the time off without fear of losing their job, in most cases, the leave is unpaid. There are a few exceptions. California, New Jersey and Rhode Island offer paid family leave through employee-paid payroll taxes. And some employers choose to provide paid maternity leave, but that affects only about 13 percent of workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

More: The Challenges of Working Motherhood

The United States remains one of the few countries with no national law to provide paid parental leave. Perhaps Duckworth's dilemma will shed light on this expansive issue; perhaps the changes she's already brought about will stir a domino effect of changes to support working mothers across the country. Let's hope so.

Blac Chyna Is Under Fire After Putting Pink Extensions in Baby Dream's Hair

The mom police are at it again, and this time they're zeroing in on Blac Chyna for adding a bit of color to her daughter's 'do.

On Wednesday, she posted a photo of her smiling daughter, Dream, wearing pink (clip-on, mind you) extensions on Instagram. And before you could even say, "Aw, she's adorable," the mom-shamers came out of the woodwork to criticize Chyna's parenting approach.

"It's not necessary and it's a baby. Not a doll to play with," one person fired off in the comment section according to Us Weekly.

Another stated the obvious: that Dream is "not a toy." Yes, true. And?

The pushback on Twitter has been similar. "This poor thing doesn't have a chance," someone tweeted. Another wrote, "Why would you do that to a baby? Leave the child alone."

More: Dream Kardashian Is Too Cute to Ignore

That criticism seems a bit... harsh? It's not like Chyna bleached her 17-month-old daughter's hair or shaved off her eyebrows. All she did was put two hair clips on her baby pigtails and snap a cute keepsake photo.

We're not sure if it's related or not, but Chyna seems to have disabled the comments on a handful of other recent snaps of Dream. And we certainly can't blame her.

Of course, this isn't the first time people have blasted Chyna for posting photos of her daughter. When, shortly after Dream was born, Chyna shared a breastfeeding picture that showed the tiniest sliver of a nipple, it drew both the typical breastfeeding-shamers (who slammed the photo for being "gross" and "tasteless") as well as commenters who implied Chyna was more interested in taking pictures than in parenting her new child. How you draw that conclusion based on one image is beyond us.

Home Decor Hacks That Make It Look Like You Don't Have Kids

I love my kids. I also love having a space where my kids can run around, play and learn. But as an interior designer, I’ve never loved the idea of my kids’ carefree lifestyle overhauling my adult living space — and I know I’m not alone in that, so here are a few home-keeping tips I’ve used to keep a home that is comfortable, clean and kid-friendly.

Baskets, baskets, baskets

Let’s debunk the myth that toy storage has to be ugly (or excessive). I use solid-colored woven baskets with lids to house all my boys’ toys. Family homes today can get too overcrowded with toys and playful knickknacks. But be honest: Kids don’t really play with that many things at one time, do they?

Lessen the mess by keeping only what your kids love most, and donate the rest to charities like Baby2Baby. Better yet, start a toy exchange with your close friends. When it comes to the big toys and games, it’s either in the basket or it’s bartered — simple as that.

Quality over quantity

Remember, mom, you’re the boss. You’re responsible for what comes in and out of your home. Kids like collecting things. If those items are plastic, multicolored toys, those will potentially be strewn across your space. To avoid this, I tapped into something they enjoy: making necklaces and collecting crystals. I love that we can go to a local farmers market and collect beautiful jewels together. The boys feel empowered that they can select the ones they love and create something with it. Meanwhile, I’m thrilled the pieces don’t look tacky lying around my home. Fashion and function really can coexist.

White really works

One of my best-kept secrets for design clients who have kids? Buy white canvas couches and purchase an extra set of white canvas covers. I know this sounds crazy, but a white canvas couch cover can be switched out as needed. Canvas wears exceptionally well, so your sets won’t look different. No more stressing if the kids spill things on it right before your mother-in-law stops by. Simply switch it, wash the soiled cover, and keep your peace of mind.

Another great reason to go white? You can bleach whatever gets stained. Whether it’s baby food or baby poo, a little bleach will not only handle the blemish, but it won’t discolor the furniture. I’ve never met a stain on a white surface that bleach couldn’t tackle.

Splurge on stylish necessities

When I had my first child, I knew my son would need a good high chair. What I didn’t need was a piece of furniture with cartoon caricatures that existed in the space I used daily for both kid and adult functions. I chose to splurge on a high chair that would meet both my child’s needs and my own. The Bloom Baby high chair’s sleek design and avant-garde style didn’t look like a child had taken over my home. And because it converted, I was able to use it from infancy through my son’s toddler years. Small choices like that can make all the difference in your home’s appearance.

The frame game

Kid art is a quintessential visual element of any family home. Ditch the tape and magnets, and instead, exhibit your young artist’s work in a photo frame. I keep five Ikea frames (that come with a matte) for my kids’ artwork. The frames were inexpensive, and I can rotate their art whenever they create something new. While I don’t want to “decorate” my home with kiddie originals all over the place, I do want my boys to feel valued and to know that I appreciate their artistic expression.

Fake plants are OK

Moms understand that time is often too precious to spend it maintaining greenery around the home. Take the pressure off and use artificial ones. Once upon a time, I would have never considered or suggested that, but good artificial plants, like orchids, can beautify your home without the mess.

It’s not difficult to have a home that maintains a kid-friendly feel while keeping an adult appeal and atmosphere at the same time. After all, mom, you deserve both beauty and comfort.

Gwyneth Paltrow Wants Her Mom to Use a Vibrator, & That’s Not Awkward at All

This week, the world learned Gwyneth Paltrow isn't afraid to cross some boundaries during an interview, so long as it's in pursuit of helping someone out for a good reason. In this case, the person Paltrow wanted to help was her mom, Blythe Danner, and the reason? Well, the reason might surprise you — in a good way, that is.

More: Gwyneth Paltrow Admitted She Doesn't Even Read Goop

Danner was a guest earlier this week on her daughter's podcast, the Goop podcast. During their very candid chat, the conversation turned to the topic of the current state of Danner's romantic life. Paltrow helped turn the conversation by opening up the floor for Danner to talk about how she spends her days and how she nurtures different kinds of relationships in her life.

"From my standpoint, you’ve had this amazing life, not that it’s always been easy. But you have these wonderful friends and children that love you and grandchildren that adore you. You’ve had this incredible career. I just wonder, are there still things you really want to accomplish?" Paltrow asked her mother.

Paltrow/Danner Goop Podcast Insta

Paltrow/Danner Goop Podcast Insta

Danner replied, "You know, I’m happy to say that I really like my own company and I’ve become a bit of hermit, which I need to be careful of." That hermitlike lifestyle Danner is referencing might be the result of her husband of 33 years, Bruce Paltrow, dying in 2002. Since then, Danner's romantic life has tapered off. With no serious love interests over the last 16 years that we know of, Danner seems quite comfortable with her single status.

When Paltrow asked her mom if she wanted a boyfriend, Danner didn't sound eager to rush back into the dating scene. Even with Paltrow cajoling her to sign up for Tinder or JDate, it was a nonstarter. "No. I have no interest. Really I don’t. If I got my heart broken, I’d probably jump off the railing. And I don’t want to be bored, so it’s one or the other."

Paltrow then took the very forward-thinking approach, offering to buy a very fun gift off the Goop website for her mom: "I can also go to goop.com and get you a vibrator," she suggested. Paltrow didn't specify which vibrator she would get her mom, but we're thinking it might be the 24-karat-gold Inez vibrator from Lelo, which comes highly recommended by Goop.

Even though Danner rebuffed her daughter's offer, we're kinda hoping she reconsiders. This offer may initially feel awkward coming from her daughter, but Danner's actually getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get her hands on some really good Goop-approved merch that most of us would kill for. So, Danner, rethink the offer. It's a really good one. We promise.

Matt Lauer Is Finally Talking After 5 Months of Silence in Exile

After five months of silence, of living in exile and of keeping us all on tenterhooks about his next movements, Matt Lauer is stepping back into the public eye and commenting on his life and how it has been affected by the allegations of sexual assault that led to these five months of downtime.

More: Matt Lauer Is "Embarrassed & Ashamed" at How Different His Life Is Now

Lauer didn't go into too much detail in his first public statement, issued to The Washington Post, on Thursday, but the fact that he is talking is major.

"I have made no public comments on the many false stories from anonymous or biased sources that have been reported about me over these past several months. I remained silent in an attempt to protect my family from further embarrassment and to restore a small degree of the privacy they have lost," his statement begins.

He continues, taking the blame for his alleged actions during his time at Today that led to his unceremonious exit in November 2017.

"But defending my family now requires me to speak up," Lauer notes. "I fully acknowledge that I acted inappropriately as a husband, father and principal at NBC. However, I want to make it perfectly clear that any allegations or reports of coercive, aggressive or abusive actions on my part, at any time, are absolutely false."

More: Matt Lauer Is Making Life Changes, Even if It's Not What He Wants

Since his exit from Today, Lauer's life has reportedly been upended. He and his ex-wife, Annette Roque, filed for divorce, and Lauer sought refuge at his home in the Hamptons. Reports from sources allegedly in the know about Lauer's movements claimed in early April that Lauer was finally moving out of his Hamptons home at the insistence of Roque, and would likely be moving into a new place in Manhattan. It's unclear if Lauer is planning any major career moves at this time, unlike fellow disgraced broadcast journalist Charlie Rose, who is reportedly planning to host a TV show interviewing the men brought down by allegations made in the initial #MeToo wave.

Your Guide to Self-Care After Trauma

$

The thing about trauma is that it's not only difficult to deal with, but it's also usually pretty sudden. One minute everything is normal, and the next you're completely blindsided by an extremely stressful, often life-changing event.

Trauma is a relatively wide category encompassing occurrences in one’s life that cause physical, emotional, spiritual or psychological harm, ranging from a death in your family to being held up at gunpoint to a childhood trauma. Regardless of the event that has occurred, for your body and mind to heal, self-care should be a top priority for those who have experienced the trauma.

Self-care, therapist Sarah Boone tells SheKnows, it is essentially akin to “firmly placing your own oxygen mask on yourself first in order to meet your own needs before attempting to meet the needs of those around you.” It is essential that before you are able to continue with your day-to-day, you take the time to honor the feelings your body is experiencing, both physically and mentally.

More: 5 Ways to Heal After Sexual Violation

“Our bodies hold all of our experiences. It is crucial to learn how to digest our emotions and our experiences so that they don’t build up in our bodies and create tension, tightness and disease," Pleasance Silicki, health educator and author of Delight: 8 Principles for Living with Ease and Joy tells SheKnows.

Ultimately, our fight-or-flight response kicks into full gear in reaction to a traumatic event as the body copes with a threat to survival, Boone adds. In the days, weeks, months and sometimes years following a traumatic event, it is common to encounter triggers in your environment, which can be as simple as a smell that was present during the trauma.

OK, I’m ready to tackle this — how do I get started?

Before any self-care can begin, it’s important for you to take a nonjudgmental stance with yourself. (Think Good Will Hunting — “It’s not your fault”).

Often, victims exert so much time and energy thinking about the what-ifs. What if I had done that differently? What if I had turned left instead of right? Boone recommends eliminating the self-blame; it's the first step toward healing. Blaming yourself for what has occurred may give you a temporary feeling of control over the events that transpired, but in the long run, this will do more harm that good, so stop carrying the weight of the experience on your shoulders.

What type of self-care is best for me?

Post-trauma plans are different for everyone. It is not a linear process with a checklist, says Boone, a notion that can be challenging to accept for many. For some, self-care can mean seeking the help of a licensed professional and discussing the events that occurred.

For others, they find an alternative approach to addressing the trauma is helpful in healing the body. For instance, Silicki teaches the ancient holistic practices from Ayurveda and uses yoga and the wisdom of these ancient systems to help with modern healing and uses daily practices like breathing, journaling and taking a walk around the block to help integrate, heal and then be able to move forward.

It's been over a year — why don’t I feel better already?

There is no real time frame for healing even though our minds may say, “Enough already! Get back to work! You should feel better!” Sometimes, our bodies need more time to process what has happened.

Through her practice, Silicki hears a lot of women say, “I should be over this by now!” The aim of self-care is to guide people from their thoughts, moving the head into the body and approaching one’s experience with a holistic view so one can eventually release the trauma from the body.

I just don’t have the time to deal with this

For many, self-care can be a time-consuming endeavor, and with the lives we lead today, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. If you are convinced you don't have the time to let yourself heal from a traumatic event, Boone recommends at the minimum considering sharing the details of your traumatic even in a safe space with someone you trust. It’s helpful if this person is a professional, but it can also be someone close that you trust. By sharing your story, you are allowing your body to feel all the feelings, which in the immediacy can lessen the intensity of what you're carrying with you.

A traumatic experience can feel like it consumes you, your thoughts and your day-to-day, but it doesn’t have to. Taking the time for a little self-care can go a long way.
