Chrissy Teigen and John Legend shared photos of daughter Luna's Sesame Street-themed birthday party this weekend — and we kind of hope none of our kids see these, because OMG, we are not pulling this kind of party off.

Luna, who will be getting a little brother very soon, just turned 2. And it looks like the toddler had a very happy birthday indeed.

Teigen posted a video of the adorable three-tier birthday cake in process (um, impressive).

Mandy Moore's Bachelorette Party Road Trip Was So Mandy Moore

If bachelorette road trips like the one Mandy Moore recently took with her besties aren't in my future, I may have to find a new group of friends. I'm kidding, of course, but Moore's weekend trip through Northern California with her pals is currently inspiring my next vacation. Moore is celebrating her last days as an unmarried (albeit happily engaged) woman before meeting her fiancé, musician Taylor Goldsmith, at the altar; this bachelorette party looks like the perfect way to do that. Every detail of this trip, from the color-coordinated outfits to the friendship necklaces, is utter perfection, and we need to ogle every last detail together.

Where was Moore's bachelorette party?

According to Moore's Instagram, she hit up a number of different spots with her best-friend squad. While there were surely multiple cars full of friends making up a bachelorette party caravan, Moore documented her ride with friends Ashley Streicher, Jenn Streicher and Chase Weideman as everyone headed to a spa in Antelope Valley to kick off their trip.

On Friday, April 13, she posted updates to her Instagram Story of a portion of her trip, which Instagram fan account thismandymoore compiled into an actual Instagram post. It's a delightful set of videos, and you'll likely find yourself smiling as you watch them. You get a feel for the amount of planning that went into bringing this bachelorette weekend to life and just how much fun Moore and her friends had every step of the way.

Moore and her friends also used the hashtag #MooreSunset to chronicle the trip, which took them to California locations Antelope Valley and Carmel, with some stops along the way for photo ops before ending with a big celebration in Big Sur. Not gonna lie: This trip looks amazing based on the destinations alone.

What happened on this trip?

To accompany Moore and crew on their trip, one of her pals made snack gift bags for the car as well as little keepsakes to remember the trip. One of those keepsakes was a bubble necklace featuring photos of Moore throughout the years. Those necklaces were hung from the rearview mirror of the car as they drove and were likely donned at some point during the celebratory trip.

Moore's Instagram Stories pointed to typical road-trip activities: stopping for coffee at the gas station, playing word games in the car, getting lost at least once and sharing lots of laughs. She talks about poolside chats, walks in a redwood forest, food and wine in her Instagram post — all of which we are so here for. We totally appreciate the roadside pics and the group shots once the crew made it to Big Sur too.

Who went with Moore on this adventure of a lifetime?

Moore tagged all her pals in her Instagram post, and everyone looks like they're having the time of their lives. #BestWeekendEver, for sure!

In addition to Moore's BFF Kelly the Streicher sisters and Weideman (who was responsible for the incredible color coordination) coming to the party, her close friend Raina Penchansky was there. Also in attendance were Moore's This Is Us costar Susan Kelechi Watson, actor Carly Craig, Emily Schuman, Sarah Gibson Tuttle and other close personal friends.

When did this bachelorette road trip happen?

Moore's bachelorette weekend came several months after she confirmed her engagement. We don't know much about how they met because the couple is super-low-key about their relationship, but they are one ridiculously cute couple.

In November 2017, Moore told SheKnows, “I wouldn’t have been ready for this relationship [with Goldsmith] at any other point in my life until recently. I had a lot of work to do on myself. It sounds so self-help-y and silver lining, but I had to go through particular experiences to get myself here,” Moore explained. “I don’t regret anything. I would do things exactly the same way. It’s all a lesson and there were beautiful moments in it, but I had to go through this crazy trail to find my way to where I am now.”

It’s 2018, & Doctors Are Still Failing Queer Women

When it comes to the health care and concerns of LGBTQ individuals, we still have a long way to go.

“I was in college when my doctor told me I didn’t need need to have an STI test despite being sexually active,” Anna K., a 29-year-old cis lesbian, says. “When I asked him why, he said that it was unlikely for another woman to [pass on an STI] to another woman. I had to insist and threaten to get a new doctor before he’d do it. I was so frustrated… it was like I had to teach him.”

Anna K. went on to add that she knew of several LGBTQ friends that had experienced similar treatment from doctors, experiences that ranged from simple misunderstandings or assumptions to downright poor treatment due to “ignorance about queer people.”

More: Information on Lesbian & Bisexual Women's Health Removed From Health Department Site

How does this differ from cisgender heterosexual women’s experiences with doctors? Aimee Uchytil, a nurse practitioner at Callen-Lorde Health Center in New York City, which focuses on LGBTQ health care, says queer women are more prone to experience “assumptions and invisibility” from their health care professionals, adding, “For heterosexual women, there’s no real barrier in being honest about who you’re having sex with.” These assumptions from doctors that cause feelings of invisibility can make queer women afraid, sometimes preventing them from going to the doctor at all.

Cis queer women are far from the only ones that meet opposition when going to the doctor’s office. We spoke with a bisexual trans woman, who wished to remain anonymous, about her experiences with doctors after she transitioned.

“The forms I had to fill out for my doctor [as a new patient] only had “male” or “female” identities, so I picked female because, you know, I’m a woman," she says. "But when my doctor asked when I’d had my last Pap [smear and] I told him I didn’t need one because I was trans, he got really mad… [he] didn’t understand why I didn’t pick the male box on the form. He said I wasted his time. I never went back there.”

Places like Planned Parenthood train their staff to be inclusive and sensitive to LGBTQ people, including offering many LGBTQ-specific medical necessities, like hormone therapies, STI testing and information on mental health, support groups and more. Unfortunately, more and more Planned Parenthoods are closing across the country, making accessible health care for queer people even more limited and difficult to come by. It makes sense that cuts would have a negative impact on lesbian, bisexual and trans women given how many use Planned Parenthood as their primary care facility.

More: Why Trans & Nonbinary People Must Be Included in the Abortion Conversation

According to Gallup, even after the Affordable Care Act passed, LGBTQ adults are still less likely to have health insurance than straight people, likely keeping them from visiting the doctor due to rising health care costs in the United States. On average, lesbians, bisexual women and trans women were unable to even afford to see the doctor. On top of that, 29 percent of lesbian and bisexual women and 31 percent of trans people reported that in the last year, they were unable to afford health care compared to 19 percent of straight women, 21 percent of LGBTQ men and 15 percent of straight men.

Not going to the doctor for any number of reasons can have huge implications for queer women. According to the National LGBT Cancer Network, a “cluster of risk factors” — including but not limited to homophobia from the health care industry, the prominence of alcohol use among lesbian and bisexual women and not giving birth before age 30 — can double a cis queer woman’s chances of cancer. There is currently limited data on cancer in queer women, but it is a solid conclusion that any of these factors put LGBTQ people “at a greater risk of late stage cancer diagnosis.”

Doctors' assumptions about cis lesbians and bisexual women, especially those dating or married to another woman, actually have a direct impact on their cervical cancer risks. The reason? The human papillomavirus is most commonly passed during intercourse between cis men and women, so many doctors mistakenly assume lesbians have never had sex with cis men in the past. It is also possible to pass HPV from skin-to-skin contact or sharing sex toys, something that occurs in many relationships between women.

More: How a Transgender Woman Is Able to Breastfeed

Joachim Voss, a professor at the University of Washington School of Nursing, says, “If we are serious about reducing the rates of cervical cancer in lesbians, an unbiased health assessment by a provider” is necessary. This assessment would assume that not everyone is straight, not everyone is cis and not everyone’s partner is straight or cis. It would make a huge difference in the way queer women feel about doctors and improve the overall health of queer women — and there's definitely a lot of room for improvement.

On Sunday, April 15, the Bush family — which has produced two presidents and one presidential hopeful in the last four decades — released some very sad news. E! News reports that following a year of hospitalizations for ongoing health conditions, former first lady Barbara Bush, 92, has decided not to seek further medical treatment for her failing health.

Barbara Bush's granddaughter, Jenna Bush Hager, spoke to her Today colleagues on Monday, April 16 from New Jersey, where she's currently reporting on a story. “We are grateful for her," Hager said. "She’s the best grandmother that anybody could ever have. Barbara and I talked to her last night. She’s in great spirits and she’s a fighter. She’s an enforcer.”

According to Us Weekly, Barbara Bush was admitted to the hospital in January 2018 for bronchitis, and George Bush Sr. was admitted in the same month for shortness of breath. The couple has been married since 1945, and Hager remarked upon the strength of their relationship. “[She's with] the man she’s loved for over 73 years and they are surrounded by family,” she told her Today colleagues, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb. “But I think the fact that they are together in this and he still says, ‘I love you, Barbie,’ every night is pretty remarkable.”

CNN reports that Barbara Bush has been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure for at least the last year. She is being cared for at her home in Houston and has been on oxygen for "some time." According to the report the official statement, she has decided to focus on "comfort care."

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others," the statement says. "She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving."

Here's How Teachers Really Feel About Gun Violence — & What It Means for Their Jobs

$

By Annamarie Houlis

School shootings are breaking the hearts of Americans time and time again. And they're also severely impacting the teaching profession; many teachers are expressing fear for their lives and, consequently, some are even reconsidering their career choice.

Most recently, an armed student inside Great Mills High School in Maryland shot two students. And on Feb. 14, a 19-year-old assailant with an AR-15 rifle fired bullets through the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He killed 17 people in what was the deadliest school shooting since 26 lives were claimed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012.

More: The Work of Politics

The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas was the 18th this yearalthough that number has been debated, which would make the Maryland shooting the 19th. There’s a school shooting every 2.5 days according to research, and the Parkland shooting has become the ninth-deadliest single-day mass shooting in modern American history. In fact, there have been 49 mass shootings in general this year (according to the Gun Violence Archive), which together have claimed 75 lives.

Recently, the brave survivors of the Florida shooting organized a march for political action against gun violence called the March For Our Lives. Students marched down Washington D.C.'s iconic Pennsylvania Avenue on Saturday, March 24. And meanwhile, teachers have been reflecting on their careers — in which they're suddenly wearing more hats than they'd ever anticipated.

"I personally am leaving the field of teaching because it is no longer satisfying for me," says Tatisha McKay, a New Jersey-based fourth-grade teacher. "I spend more time worrying about my safety and doing the jobs parents should be doing at home than actually teaching. It's really sad because all I want to do is teach... but all of the added stress, and now with all of the school shootings, I am scared more than half the day. It just doesn't seem worth it to stay any longer."

McKay isn't alone in feeling this way. A New York-based high school teacher, Lauren*, who asked to keep her identity concealed, says she feels like she already does so much, and now society expects her to save lives too. "It's not really fair," she explains. "I think that students now can't even feel 100 percent safe in their own school, a place that's touted as a safe space for them, is really sad and says a lot about the current state of affairs in America," Lauren says. "People say we have a mental health problem and not a gun problem, yet many politicians don't want the average person to have easy and affordable access to health care to mitigate that problem in the first place (among countless other health issues). Some suggest arming teachers. I think anyone who suggests that is not a teacher, nor are they friends or family of a teacher. We as teachers are already liable for so much, and now people want to arm us with lethal weapons."

Lauren wants to know: Where will the money come from to train teachers to use guns?

"People scream in protest when schools want funding for books and facilities, and now they're suddenly gung-ho about giving us guns," she explains. "Why is there such a disconnect in values?"

She's referring to Donald Trump's rather divisive proposal that would arm teachers and coaches with firearms. He recently held an emotional listening session at the White House with survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during which he discussed the potential plan.

There, he also referred to Aaron Feis, the assistant football coach and security guard at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who was among the 17 people shot and killed during the shooting. He said, "That coach was very brave, saved a lot of lives, I suspect — but, if he had a firearm, he wouldn’t have had to run; he would have shot him, and that would have been the end of it."

A wealth of research refutes Trump's plan, however. For example, trained police officers hit their targets just 30 percent of the time according to Time, so turning teachers into sharpshooters would be difficult to say the least. And there's no empirical evidence to support that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. In fact, only seven of the 160 mass shootings that took place between 2000 and 2013 ended because of a good guy with a gun according to 2014 FBI data.

More: Researchers Asked Kids to Draw Scientists — & What Happened Next Will Make Your Day

But a "gun-free" zone to a "maniac," according to Trump, is an invitation to attack. He's said that if shooters knew there was a possibility they'd be shot back at, they'd be deterred.

"No one tells you when you study to become a teacher that you're supposed to be the hero who saves someone's life," Lauren adds. "That's not what I signed up for. And now I feel like I have to take on that role."

And other teachers say they're not paid enough to be putting their lives on the line. "It is a running joke, but also a sad truth in this country that teachers are grossly underpaid when you consider the true hours we put in, the workload we manage, the deficits we endure and the sheer scale of impact we have on generation after generation of students," says Amanda Houlis, a New Jersey-based elementary school teacher. "To add to the multitude of hats we wear and responsibilities we bear, mind you, all things that we knowingly chose to take on, protecting classrooms of kids from shootings is now a very real element of our job descriptions, and a lot of us are looking around thinking, 'I didn’t sign up for that.'"

She says that it's "infuriating" to listen to politicians "blindly speak" about arming teachers with guns, while many teachers are screaming from the rooftops that they don’t feel comfortable being trained to use automatic or semi-automatic weapons among their students.

"What we need is the funding to have an appropriate number of social workers and school psychologists for students in need," she advises instead. "We need administrations to take us seriously when we bring them students who have presented certain challenges that go beyond the norm and whom we believe may need extra support. I don’t need or want a gun to protect myself or my students. I need adequate resources to help me prevent any child from handling homicidal thoughts and feelings or other mental illness challenges alone."

Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13 to 18 (or 21.4 percent) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life according to The National Alliance on Mental Illness. For children ages 8 to 15, the estimate is 13 percent. But only about half of children ages 8 to 15 received mental health services in the previous year.

"We have all gotten the message that we are supposed to be here and protect our students with our own lives, but that reality is more frightening than I could ever express," Houlis adds. "And I’m not supposed to express it, because that would be seen as selfish or not doing my job. The problem is that we all have begun to ask ourselves, 'When did this become a part of our jobs? When did the expectation become that we are to protect our students with our lives?' But you can’t actually ask that question out loud."

Of course, not all teachers are against having guns. One Illinois high school teacher who asked that she just be called by her first name, Elaine, said she'd actually prefer to have a gun.

More: Does Free-Range Parenting Deserve Its Hype — or Its Haters?

"I own a gun legally at home already," the math teacher explained. "I would never want to have to use it, but it's comforting to know that if I needed to, I would have a way to at least try to fight back. I wouldn't have to just hide under my desk and wait for the police to hopefully show up in time. But, of course, I don't think all teachers who don't feel comfortable having guns should be forced to carry them."

Updated April 16, 2018, 3:30 p.m. ET: Let the Kardashian-kid name puns continue, because Khloé Kardashian's baby name is a truly spectacular addition. Kardashian shared the adorable choice Monday via Instagram.

“Our little girl, True Thompson, has completely stolen our hearts and we are overwhelmed with LOVE,” Kardashian wrote. “Such a blessing to welcome this angel into the family! Mommy and Daddy loooooove you True!”

Kris Jenner also chimed in on Instagram to explain that little True is named after Kris' grandfather, True Otis Houghton.

One question remains. In regard to that one Kardashian fan who had a dream about a stormi and reign-filled night in North Chicago etc. — is that dream now bound to come... true??

Original story, published April 12, 2018: There's a new Kardashian kid in town: Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson welcomed their baby girl on Thursday, April 12, sources have confirmed to People and TMZ. Watch out, world, there's another Aries on the loose!

The baby, who reportedly has yet to be named, is said to be doing well. Kardashian's family — including mother, Kris, and sisters Kim and Kourtney — were in the delivery room along with the baby's father, Tristan Thompson, TMZ reports. That's right: Dad was there.

More: Khloé Kardashian Shocked to Learn She's Not Having a Boy

That may come as a surprise to some since the exciting baby news comes just days after reports Thompson had repeatedly cheated on Kardashian throughout her pregnancy. The most recent instance was reported on April 10, a week after Thompson was caught on camera walking into his hotel room in New York with an unidentified woman (who was definitely not Kardashian) in the wee, small hours of the morning. Prior to that, People reports Thompson had been caught canoodling around the country with various women.

According to Complex, Cleveland Cavaliers fans booed Thompson during his game on Wednesday night. Some people even held signs declaring their love and loyalty for Kardashian.

Despite any unfortunate news, Kardashian seemed to be in high spirits regarding her final days of pregnancy. Kardashian announced on her app she was "not afraid about giving birth" just days before she went into labor.

"I don't feel like I need to prepare for my birth by freaking myself out," she wrote, according to People. "I've seen over eight births live and in person. Women were made to do this! It's a very natural experience. I read my apps every day and I ask my doctor if I have any questions, so I'm honestly not that afraid. Of course I'm a little nervous to go into labor, but I'm trying to not overthink something that literally happens all the time."

As for how she feels about what comes after birth (you know, parenting), she wrote in another post that she feels cool and prepared thanks to her nieces and nephews.

"When it comes to being around kids, I feel like I've gotten some good experience thanks to my nieces and nephews," Kardashian wrote in a blog shared on her app. "I also basically helped raise my little sisters. But still, I don't think you know what type of mom you'll be until you have your own children. You can have all the training and preparation in the world, but you're never truly ready for motherhood — at least that's what people keep telling me. What I do know is that I have incredible patience and love for children, no matter what. And love gives me the will to handle anything."

The Kardashians are certainly no strangers to swaddling little ones. In January of this year, Kim Kardashian West and her husband, Kanye West, welcomed their third child, Chicago, into their family via surrogate. Weeks later, Kylie Jenner gave birth to her first child, Stormi Webster.

We sense many pink-filled playdates in the near future.

11 Things to Add to Your Coffee That Are Not Coffee Creamer

$

Coffee may be your legal drug of choice, but it is possible to have too much of a good thing — particularly in terms of what you put in your coffee.

If you've been drinking your coffee the same way for years, it may be in need of a major upgrade, especially in the creamer department. Many of us are guilty of enjoying our coffee a little on the sweet side — and by sweet, I mean dumping in half a container of sugar and a few glugs of milk so you can hardly recognize your medium roast. Switching up your creamer is a quick and easy way to take your morning coffee from a dairy-filled sugar bomb to healthy fuel with a caffeine kick.

More: Is My Coffee Habit Throwing Off My Hormones?

Because of this common coffee-and-cream conundrum, there are a few good reasons to consider a coffee creamer swap. First and foremost (as any true coffee snob can verify), there's the flavor. It may take some adjustment to start drinking your coffee closer to its virgin roots, but just like taking a bitter sip of beer for the first time, your taste buds will soon adjust, and they'll thank you for it.

The second big reason is hard to ignore, and it has to do with your health. If you're loading your coffee up with cream and sugar in the morning, you're most definitely starting your day on the wrong foot and can expect an inevitable sugar crash by 10 a.m. Millie Wilson, registered dietitian and chef instructor at Common Threads, cautions, "Adding milk and cream into your coffee can add fat and up to 500 calories. If you need to lighten up your coffee, consider adding unsweetened almond milk, as it has fewer calories than skim milk, but also provides that creamy texture you're looking for."

More: The Latest Coffee Trend Is Cat Poop Coffee — & It's Very Expensive

And if you're looking for something completely new to reinvent your brew, try one of these coffee creamer substitutes that are surprisingly delicious.

1. Butter

butter coffee

butter coffee

Putting butter in coffee is a thing, and what a deliciously inventive thing it is. (Note that adding a healthy fat like grass-fed butter is recommended.) Brittany Poole of Hush Destinations, specializing in digital detox vacations, explains her penchant for the butter-coffee combo: "The extra fats help slow your body's response to the caffeine, so I feel incredibly focused in the morning without the crash. I might be biased, but I think it tastes better than a latte."

2. Cacao butter

cacao butter

cacao butter

Maybe a dollop of butter in your morning coffee isn't for you, but what if said butter tasted like chocolate? "Buy some cacao butter from your local health store, and add a small chunk [about a teaspoon] to your coffee while it's piping hot. Let the fat melt, and mix it up for a chocolaty coffee taste. You could even add a teaspoon of cocoa powder for extra chocolate flavor," says blogger and personal trainer Alex Fergus.

3. Collagen powder

collagen coffee

Consider this your new go-to antiaging morning drink. "If I'm feeling really healthy, I'll add collagen powder to my coffee. You can't taste it, but it's got a little bit of protein, and it helps keep your skin youthful and taut," says Poole.

4. Egg yolks

egg yolk coffee

File this flavorful coffee creamer alternative under "don't knock it 'til you've tried it." Fergus explains, "Egg yolks are excellent emulsifiers. Blend them into your coffee for a silky smooth finish — not to mention they are packed full of nutrients!" (Choose pasteurized if you're worried about consuming raw eggs.)

5. Honey

honey coffee

honey coffee

For those who have long associated honey with hot tea, this news may come as a surprise. Honey tastes great in coffee, and it makes an excellent natural alternative to refined sugar. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that, on average, Americans consume 19.5 teaspoons of sugar a day. Wilson says, "This is two to three times more than the recommended amount!" To help curb a sugary coffee addiction, Wilson recommends, "If you need a little sweetness, going natural is the best option. Instead of refined white sugar, opt for honey, agave nectar or even a splash of pure maple syrup."

6. Ice

iced coffee

iced coffee

If you, like so many java junkies, hate to see your coffee naked in the morning, you may be brewing it wrong. For many people, black brewed coffee is tough on the stomach. "If you've never tried cold-brew coffee (with or without ice), it might be time to do so," says Wilson. "Because of the way it is brewed, it is about 67 percent less acidic than traditionally brewed coffee. If you experience heartburn from high-acidic foods, cold brew might be the way to go. It also has a much bolder flavor, so you may find that adding a lot of sweeteners and cream isn't necessary."

7. Money

While I'm not suggesting you drop loose change into your coffee just yet, there's something to be said for investing in your brew. As Wilson points out, buying top-notch coffee will naturally make it taste better, meaning you'll need fewer add-ins as a result. If you think you're ready to go all the way and drink it black, Wilson suggests choosing high-quality organic coffee to start with a healthy base. "Traditional coffee beans may be treated with pesticides before hitting shelves," she explains.

8. Oil

Like butter, oil is another oddball coffee mixer that seems to work. Fergus recommends coconut oil as a popular and healthy creamer sub to his clients. "It's actually a really good performance enhancer — both cognitively and physically — as the coconut oil is packed full of MCT [medium-chain triglycerides] that are broken down in the body faster than usual fats. This gives you a nice energy boost without the sugar crash."

9. Pumpkin

If you can't imagine a life worth living without the PSL, Aimee McNew, certified nutritionist at PaleoPlan, will do you one better. She recommends mixing real pumpkin into black coffee for full fall flavors — without a Starbucks-size side of guilt.

10. Spices

Spiced coffee

Spiced coffee

Now that you have PSL on lock, this creamer hack may make your life complete: Someone finally came up with a flavorful, healthy chai latte that won't add to your ever-increasing Starbucks debt. Poole recommends adding a hint of cinnamon, turmeric, China spices [five-spice powder] and black pepper to your morning brew for the chai latte effect. "The cinnamon helps prevent spiking in your adrenals. And the turmeric has been proven to help people live long, healthy lives. On top of all that, it's pretty tasty," she says.

11. Whipped coconut cream

This is one lucky moment when you can have your whipped cream and eat it too — as long as it's made from coconuts. McNew's whipped coconut cream is the perfect alternative to the whipped sugary stuff. It's Paleo-friendly and easy to whip up in under 10 minutes.

Move over, Ellen's 12 Days of Giveaways, because Ellen DeGeneres may have just given out her most generous gift to date. The host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show made headlines on Monday when she gave away $1 million to high school athletes who had been directly affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Everything about this moment, which was captured in all its gloriousness on Monday's episode, will leave you crying happy tears and Googling where you can send a donation check; DeGeneres' generosity is that infectious.

Here's the 411 about DeGeneres' major giveaway, as E! News reports it. During Monday's episode, the student-athletes of Rockport-Fulton High School volleyball team in Rockport, Texas videochatted with DeGeneres during the show. Before they spoke with DeGeneres directly, a pre-taped clip was shown wherein some of the young women on the team got to speak about life before Harvey and what it meant to play in their high school gym, Gold Gym.

"Before [Hurricane] Harvey, I looked forward to my senior year and being able to have those moments that every senior gets and I kind of didn't get those moments. But I think, overall, I got more out of it than I probably ever would have," team member Allison Sanders explained in the clip. Her teammates echoed those sentiments, by and large.

One of Sanders' teammates, Carys Hawkins, couldn't fight the tears when she explained during her interview how the devastation of Hurricane Harvey affected her and her teammates. "The moment I realized how bad it was was when [...] we got pictures of our gym and it was just everywhere. It was like a second home for us, and to see it destroyed was so devastating," Hawkins explained.

Visibly moved by the pre-taped interviews, DeGeneres surprised the team and other Rockport-Fulton students who had gathered in the local middle school's gymnasium. While the Rockport-Fulton students thought they were filming a video for the show, DeGeneres cut in to chat with them (once the surprise and excitement had worn off a bit, that is). Grab a tissue, because the way in which DeGeneres introduces her generous gift is really something else.

"I know that your gym was more than just a gym to all of you," she explained. "It was important to your entire community." Then, DeGeneres went on to say that with the help of the Lowe's Gives program, $1 million (which DeGeneres acknowledged might be the biggest donation ever made on the show) was going to go towards rebuilding the Gold Gym. Of course, the tears began to flow along with the excited cheers from everyone in that Rockport gym and, if you're anything like me, you might have shed a couple of tears watching this all unfold, too.

DeGeneres' amazing donation is unprecedented but it admittedly scans with the kind of charitable giving that she does regularly on her show. While she is known for the flashier giveaways associated with the aforementioned Ellen's 12 Days of Giveaways, it is not uncommon to see her teaming up with various corporations and charities to give large sums of money to working mothers trying to pay their bills, army families a little reunion surprise and beyond. DeGeneres' heart is truly one of the biggest and she spreading the love that makes it that big each and every day.

All this generosity is truly next-level. If there's one person worth emulating when it comes to showing compassion and kindness and endeavoring to give love whenever possible, it's surely DeGeneres and the example she sets.

Tom Brady & Gisele Bündchen's Date Nights Are Next-Level

There's no doubt Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen lead a charmed life. He's a professional football player, she's a model and they move about in more glamorous circles than most of us. So, when this high-profile couple does date night, it's fair to say that their idea of a good night out on the town is going to be way different than ours. Sure, they could stay in, turn on Netflix and whip up some snacks like the rest of us. Instead, Brady and Bündchen go the extra mile and create a version of date night so different from our own that it's truly aspirational.

Take their most recent date night for example. The pair was vacationing in Dubai and went out for a night on the town. Brady posted a photo on his Instagram account of himself and Bündchen. The photo, captioned with "Date night with my # 1" and a couple of heart emojis, shows off the very handsome couple. Forgoing date-night sweatpants, the couple instead donned some very chic black-tie looks for their evening out.

Even though we didn't see what the couple was doing for their date night, they looked ridiculously good doing it. You can see Brady sporting a tux in his selfie with Bündchen. But thankfully, Bündchen gave us a sneak peek of her outfit in a wider shot.

It makes sense the pair would go all out. When in Dubai, you don't have a quiet night in; you gotta get out there and see what kind of fun you can have! According to Entertainment Tonight, the couple was in Dubai — Qatar, specifically — so Brady could do some global ambassador work as part of his involvement with the Best Buddies foundation. But once he was off the clock, he'd want to do something extra-special with his boo — like have a super-fancy date night out — or as Bündchen showed us on her Instagram, go for a romantic-ish camel ride together.

Brady and Bündchen are no strangers to upscale date nights, either. While the pair's Dubai date night ranks up there, the couple has been spotted on numerous occasions heading out for a meal at a fancy restaurant, living it up at a concert or two and just looking dapper as heck. It's all in a day's work for this celebrity couple, but for us, they've set the date-night bar pretty darn high.

How to Deal With Travel Anxiety so It Doesn't Ruin Your Trip

Traveling can be exciting, mind-expanding, dream-fulfilling or, for some, just part of their job. But regardless of the reason behind the trip, even the most seasoned of travelers sometimes has to deal with bouts of travel-related anxiety.

For me, travel anxiety used to be as much a part of the trip as last-minute packing and road snacks. I was terrified of flying and refused to get on boats, and the thought of attempting to navigate another city's public transit system gave me nightmares. Then I moved to Ireland and lived there for eight years.

The thing about living on an island is that in order to go anywhere, you have to take a plane or boat. The first years were admittedly pretty rough. I'd start feeling nauseated a few days before I was set to fly and couldn't even think about it without having a mild anxiety attack.

More: What to Do If You Get Sick While Traveling

Eventually, though, something shifted. I can't remember exactly when it happened, but after a while, I didn't dread going on planes or boats and felt confident enough to take city buses in places where I didn't speak the language. Now, years later, I actually enjoy trying out public transit in other cities and countries (and, of course, comparing it to the subway in New York) and am always looking forward to my next trip.

For me, repeated exposure is what ultimately helped, but since that's not a very quick solution (and doesn't work for everyone), here are a few tips from mental health experts to help you get rid of (or at least ease) your travel-related anxiety.

MoreUnique Wellness Retreats That Go Beyond R&R

What causes travel anxiety?

We should probably start by considering why travel is such a source of stress for so many people. And to clarify, we're not just talking about delayed flights or lost bags — we're referring to a mental and physical response your body has, triggered by anxiety related to travel. According to Dr. Kelly Moore, a clinical psychologist, "Anxiety in general is typically the product of feeling a loss of control or feeling concern that a negative outcome will result from something."

When you think about it, that completely makes sense when it comes to traveling. While you may be in control of most aspects of your day-to-day life, when you leave your home area, most things are beyond your control. If something bad or unexpected happened to you at home, you'd know how to handle it, but the same typically isn't true when you travel — and that can cause a fear of the unknown.

"Travel brings with it an inherent degree of uncertainty and unpredictability — this is part of the allure for some who experience it as an adventure," Dr. Steven Levine, board-certified psychiatrist and founder and CEO of Actify Neurotherapies tells SheKnows. "For others, the break in daily routine and potential for novelty elicits anxiety. If you can’t picture it, you can’t plan ahead for it, and that can trigger the body's 'danger' signals."

Along the same lines, Moore tells SheKnows that as with any other type of anxiety, it's important that people are aware of exactly what they're afraid of and then think about whether these concerns pose realistic threats.

"Depending on that, people should try to be as prepared as possible to allay those concerns, but try their best not to avoid travel as a coping skill," Moore says. "Avoiding just reinforces the belief that travel is dangerous and doesn’t give a person the confidence to face it and disprove their fears."

How can we deal with travel anxiety?

The only way I got over my travel anxiety was to keep traveling. Turns out, I was onto something, because that's what Moore recommends as well.

"The best thing to do — especially if one really wants to travel in spite of their anxiety — is to just do it!" she says.

Additionally, there are steps you can take to make the travel experience less stressful, which in turn, could reduce your anxiety, Moore explains.

"Be prepared with all of your required documents for air travel so you don’t get flustered at security checkpoints," Moore suggests. "Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at all your destinations. Also, research the place you are going and come up with a plan of what you will do. The more you can feel a sense of predictability and control over your trip, the more your anxiety will lessen."

Similarly, Levine recommends planning ahead and getting as much information on your destination as possible to help you picture your new situation. This could include talking to people who’ve been there, reading online reviews and finding pictures of the place online. If part of your anxiety stems from missing home, he says bringing familiar pictures and objects that are comforting and reminders of home and loved ones could help.

Lastly, Levine suggests maintaining as much of your daily routine as possible, including the times you wake up and go to sleep, eat and exercise. This can help make an unfamiliar place seem more like home.

For me, it's all about letting go, knowing that so many aspects of travel are beyond my control. There's nothing you can do about a delayed flight or getting on the wrong bus in Mexico City. Instead of immediately getting flustered and upset, I try to stop, be mindful of my surroundings and figure out what I need to do to get back on track. One of the exciting parts of travel is the deviation from your everyday life — instead of having it throw you off your game, embrace it and any adventures that come with it (even if it means missing the No. 1-ranked museum on TripAdvisor). Bon voyage!

Why This Mom Is Boycotting Mother's Day

$

0

This May will mark my first Mother’s Day as a parent. Of course, my 4-month-old won’t be marking the occasion by drawing me a picture or making me breakfast in bed. But even if she weren’t too young for those offerings, I still wouldn’t be celebrating. This is an action I believe the activist founder of the modern Mother’s Day celebration in the U.S., Anna Jarvis, would be proud of.

Anna Jarvis, who remained single and child-free her entire life, started a national campaign for the celebration of Mother’s Day in the early 20th century as a counter to other American holidays, which she saw as biased toward male achievements. President Woodrow Wilson, who was notoriously resistant to women’s suffrage, signed a measure officially establishing Mother’s Day in 1914, a full six years before women won the right to vote in the U.S.

Today’s highly commercialized Mother’s Day has come a long way from its activist roots. And as my child’s sole parent, I personally think it might be time to revisit the holiday's relevance — and demographic data tells me I’m not alone.

More:  Where Is the Maternity Wear for Queer Parents?

In fact, according to the Pew Research Center, in the United States of the early 21st century, less than half of children under 18 live with two heterosexual parents in their first marriage. Having celebrations focused on one parent don’t do justice to the reality of today’s family structures. Children today grow up in single parent/two-mom/two-dad/one mom/one step-mom/one dad/one stepdad/one mom/one grandma (you get the picture) families.

Holding separate celebrations for mothers and fathers not only leaves certain children out, it also reinforces inequitable parenting structures. Don’t know what I mean? Take a stroll through the Hallmark card aisles and notice the differences between Mother’s and Father’s Day cards: The cards for men tend to be about relaxation (fishing, barbecuing, etc.), whereas plenty of Mother's Day cards make allusions to Mom cooking, cleaning and basically doing all the work at home. And that's because in hetero partnerships, it's a well-documented fact that women do just that: the bulk of work at home, even when they also work outside the house. It's women who take on the huge mental burden of housework and parenting duties. We should be working to make the burdens (and joys!) of parenting more equal, not celebrating those imbalances.

Having separate holidays for moms and dads also marginalizes parents who don’t identify as "moms” or "dads,” but someone else altogether. For this reason, Johnny Blazes, a performing arts and social/emotional skills teacher, created Nonbinary Parents Day, which will was celebrated on April 15 for the first time this year. Blazes told SheKnows they “picked the third Sunday of April because… we celebrate mothers and fathers in the spring in the U.S.," and she thinks, "nonbinary parents deserve to be included in the season: a season of birth and renewal of life.”

More: I'm a Feminist, but I Think Baby Girls Should Wear Dresses

Along these lines, it would be even easier to have one Parent's Day or Caregiver's Day that covers everyone involved in raising children. And this brings me to the final reason Mother’s Day is worth revisiting: Mother’s Day (and Father’s Day) celebrations ignore the contributions of caregivers who are not parents. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, babysitters, day care workers and teachers all make our jobs as parents possible. It really does take a village. (Shoutout to my sitter, who is watching my kid as I type this.)

But, you ask, shouldn’t we continue to recognize women’s work, which, as the saying goes, is never done?

The answer is undoubtedly yes. But there are plenty more sustainable ways to recognize the hard work that parents do for their children and for society more broadly. For example, why not implement paid parental leave at the federal level? Did you know the U.S. is the only industrialized nation in the world that doesn’t offer new parents paid time off to care for new children? And while we’re at it, lets throw in affordable childcare options. Currently, in every state but one, a year of childcare is more expensive than a year at a state university.

And what about addressing the rise in the incarceration of women? According to the Vera Institute, the number of women in jail has skyrocketed over the last four decades. Black mothers are disproportionately affected: 44 percent of incarcerated women are Black, and 80 percent are mothers. Last year, the organization Southerners On New Ground sought to address this issue by organizing the national Black Mama’s Day Bail Out Action to get women out of jail for Mother’s Day. The action resulted in the bail out of over 100 Black mothers throughout the country and sparked a larger conversation about the cash bail system, a practice that discriminates against those in poverty and people of color.

But getting back to Anna Jarvis. After she succeeded in getting Mother’s Day recognized as a holiday, she then spent the next few decades trying to ensure it wasn’t co-opted for financial gain, which we now know was a losing battle. One awesome action she organized was the boycotting of florists who raised the price of flowers every May. I think Anna Jarvis would agree that as much as I love pancakes, significant parent-supportive policy changes are something most mothers would appreciate more than breakfast in bed this year.

Paula Patton Spills Details About Her New Relationship

It’s been a long time coming, but actor Paula Patton seems to have found love once again. The star of the upcoming film Traffik opened up about her dating life this week while doing press for the film. She seems hesitant to divulge too much about her mystery beau, but just reading the comments she does make has us ready to sit down with her and talk men all day.

Patton's new love glow can be felt in her taped interview with Extra in which she is all smiles and sporting a gorgeous blond pixie cut. “I have a boyfriend now. I haven’t called anybody a boyfriend. He’s my boyfriend!” she gushed. It’s welcome news from the multitalented actor/singer/songwriter, who split from Robin Thicke in 2014 after two decades together.

Paula Patton Extra Interview New BF

This is the first time since the split that Patton has gone on the record about anyone in her life. The interviewer opens by reminding her of a previous conversation they had in which Patton said she was just "taste testing" the dating pool. Instead, she's been focused on work, with films Warcraft and The Do-Over out in 2016 and TV series Somewhere Between in 2017. With Traffik, Patton has stayed fairly busy — she also serves as a producer in addition to starring.

More5 Reasons the Thicke-Patton Split Was Inevitable

Patton declined to reveal much about her new beau, but did say they met in Los Angeles and indicated he may not be in the movie business. Luckily for us, she did give one hilarious hint about where they met (and the comment also just doubles as good dating advice): "If you have a kid and you have a basketball game, look at the daddies. It’s kind of a suburban romance. It’s like all women’s fairy tale. He’s got kids, I got a kid. You know, one of those!"

Patton has an 8-year old son, who she now shares joint custody of with Thicke after a bitter court battle. During the negotiations, Patton filed a temporary restraining order against her ex, alleging physical abuse toward her and emotional abuse of both her and their son.

That’s all behind her now, though, and she’s looking forward to the future with the man she calls her new love. When asked how long they’ve been together, she sheepishly replied, "A month," before quickly adding, "but when you know you know!" going on to later say, "I love him." Girlfriend knows her heart — and we really wanna know more details. Spill, Patton!

MorePaula Patton's Throwback Pic of Robin Thicke Is Glorious

Perhaps one thing that makes her so open to finding new love is her great perspective on the past. When she was asked by Extra about the key to successful co-parenting, Patton was emphatic. “To live in the now, you have to forgive. That was then, this is now," she explained. "You don’t have to hold on to anything. You’re not doing your children any service. They feel everything, they want their parents to get along and no matter how you feel about your spouse, everybody wants to love their parents." Great wisdom from a lady in love and words we should all live by.

Vegans Now Have a Burger Option at Shake Shack

Vegetarians, it’s time to celebrate. No, the vegetarian lifestyle didn’t get a vote of support from a celebrity, and yes, beef is still a leading cause of carbon emissions. But still... good news. Beloved food chain Shake Shack is debuting a new veggie burger this Friday, and it sounds freaking delicious.

In case Shake Shack isn’t on your current rotation, you should know they’ve had a vegetarian burger for a while now. Their current vegetarian option uses a deep-fried, cheese-stuffed mushroom as the patty. If that’s a stand-by favorite of yours, don’t fear. This option isn’t going away. Shake Shack is just adding a more artery-friendly option.

More: "Donut Fries" Are Going to Change Your Dunkin’ Donuts Experience

The new patty, called The Veggie Shack, is crafted with black beans, brown rice and beets. Yep, no dairy, so vegans can get in on the goodness too — although the standard fixings (lettuce, onions, pickles, vegan mustard and mayo) also include provolone cheese, so you’ll need to opt out of that. As with their standard burgers, you can order The Veggie Shack on a potato bun, as a lettuce wrap or on a gluten-free bun.

But before you grab your bag and head out the door, The Veggie Shack is being tested in select markets only — namely, a few locations in New York City (Astor Place, Midtown East, Upper East Side), Los Angeles (Glendale and WeHo) and in Austin at The Domain. Even if you’re in those locations, the veggie burger is app-exclusive, so you’ll need to download the Shack app to place your order.

If you’re not interested in being an early tester, The Veggie Shack will officially be added to the menu on April 24. Just get on it early, as the Shack hasn’t released any info for how long the burger will be around.

11 Ways to Go Green Without Blowing Your Budget

$

Most of us would like to treat the Earth a little better, but sometimes it can be difficult — even expensive — to do. Store shelves are lined with products claiming to be environmentally friendly, and it feels like "going green" has just become another marketing ploy.

Don't give up just yet. It turns out, some of the most impactful ways to be more environmentally friendly don't require any new purchases. Being a warrior for the planet might be in your cards just yet.

Here are the cheapest, simplest ways to help Mother Earth.

1. Refuse excess

You know the phrase "reduce, reuse, recycle"? There should be an additional R — refuse — and it’s the best way to cut down on environmental harm. Could you put your produce in reusable nylon bags instead of the plastic bags at the store? Do you accept freebie items you never use, like pens, flyers or plastic utensils? Start saying no instead and skip the need to reuse or recycle altogether.

2. Walk, bike, carpool & use public transportation

Cutting back on your car use could save you money and help reduce the environmental impacts of cars, like fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Commit to reusable containers

That means foregoing bottled water because you’ve got your own water bottle handy, happily schlepping your coffee mug to Starbucks and — if you can get past the awkwardness — bringing your own food containers in when you’re getting takeout or think you’ll have leftovers. Hopefully, food containers will get easier. A college in New Hampshire started a purchase-and-return leftover container program, and Go Box has created a similar system with 80 vendors in Portland.

4. Use less water

Take shorter showers, try low-flow showerheads and use your energy-efficient dishwasher (which uses less water than traditional dishwashing) or switch up your dishwashing practice to leave the faucet running for less time. Only run your laundry if it’s a full load, don’t use heated water unless it’s absolutely necessary and only wash truly dirty clothing.

5. Use less electricity

Did you know that many electronics consume energy even when they’re not actively “on”? It’s called phantom energy, and besides being a waste of electricity, it can add as much as 10 percent to your electricity bill. Try to unplug things like chargers, microwaves and computers when not in use, or invest in “smart” surge protectors that disable power when items are not in use.

6. Responsibly recycle e-waste

E-waste can contain all kinds of pollutants, including lead, mercury, beryllium, polyvinyl chloride and flame-retardants. Recycling your e-waste through a verified recycler allows the item to be broken down into reusable or recyclable pieces and have toxic materials appropriately handled. Look for recyclers on the EPA’s website.

Next: More cheap ways to go green

A version of this article was originally published in December 2015.

{pageBreak}

7. Eat less meat

Meat has a big impact on the environment, with a study led by Gidon Eshel of Bard College suggesting it has a bigger impact on our carbon footprint than cars. Not everyone wants to go fully vegetarian, but try participating in a meatless day a week.

8. Buy items secondhand

Not only will it save you money, but it also prolongs the life of a perfectly usable item that may have otherwise gone to the landfill.

9. Compost

Invest in your own backyard compost or see if your city has a compost program — many are cheap or even free to join, and it turns food waste back into useable energy.

10. Streamline your mailbox

Ask to be removed from junk mail databases and switch your bills and bank statements to paperless. If you’re a big online shopper, try to order in one purchase to cut down on the number of boxes you receive.

11. Reduce your paper towel consumption

Try having a stack of dishtowels on hand for drying hands while cooking or washing up, and consider cloth napkins at dinnertime.

12. Contact your representatives about environmental issues

Whether it's improving composting and recycling in your city, getting better public transportation, protecting wild lands or keeping corporations from polluting local waterways, hold your representatives accountable and keep in constant contact with them.

A Major Decision About Prince Charles' Future Will Be Made This Week

The royal wedding isn't the only major royal family-related event happening in the United Kingdom right now. Sure, all the details (known and emerging) about the upcoming nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are very exciting, but there's another member of the family we need to talk about right now; this news could affect the family and the future of the U.K.

According to a report from the International Business Times, Queen Elizabeth II and members of the Commonwealth will likely be convening on Friday, April 20 to decide who the next head of the Commonwealth will be. Contrary to what some might naturally assume, the head of the Commonwealth isn't automatically the queen's direct heir. Instead, this group must meet ahead of time to decide who will assume the role.

More: A Look Inside the U.K.'s Royal Homes

According to a statement given by Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesperson, Prince Charles is, of course, the likely successor, and hopefully, he will be chosen because he has the full support of the Commonwealth. "The UK supports the Prince of Wales as the next head of the Commonwealth. He has been a proud supporter of the Commonwealth for more than four decades and has spoken passionately about the organization's unique diversity," they remarked. "Succession is a matter for the Commonwealth as a whole to determine."

According to the website, the Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 "independent and equal sovereign states,” some of which once formed what you might remember from world history as the British Empire. Others have joined the organization over the years for political or governmental support, the most recent being Rwanda in 2009.

The Commonwealth is also described as a mutually supportive community that seeks to promote good governance, justice and human rights. On a practical level, that means the group provides “training and technical assistance and support(s) decision-makers to draw up legislation and deliver policies. We deploy experts and observers who offer impartial advice and solutions to national problems. We also provide systems, software and research for managing resources.” In addition, they promote the work of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris climate-change agreement.

More: Goal: To Look Half as Good at 90 as Queen Elizabeth Does

So, while every nation has their own leader, there has also always been one head of the Commonwealth, and until now that’s been the queen. This week is the meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government, which gather together every two years, and one of the things on the agenda is to determine who will succeed the queen when she either dies or abdicates her throne. While nobody wants to think about losing the queen, at her age (she'll be 92 years old on April 21) these are questions that need to be answered.

Per the Commonwealth of Nations website, the job of head of the Commonwealth isn’t actually all that old. Until 1949, the British monarch simply ruled all the nations under its purview, but when India wanted to become a republic, the Commonwealth was created to allow some continuing cohesion among nations that had British ties. At the time, King George VI was named the first head of the Commonwealth, a role the queen was elected to when she took over for her father. The organization’s website describes the role now as having symbolic significance but no formal function. And whether Prince Charles is chosen or not will have no bearing on his position within the ruling structure of Britain.

So just a few more days, and we’ll know who’s going to take over the role next. Then we can get back to those deeply pressing royal matters of weddings and babies!

Actual Things You Can Do to Treat Your Smartphone Addiction

$

Our addiction to smartphones and social media as a cause of anxiety and depression is definitely not news. Even though having access to our friends, family and acquaintances in the palm of our hands 24 hours a day may seem like it connects us to others, but in reality, it does the opposite. Now, a new study isn't just confirming it — it's offering steps to help you overcome your digital addiction.

Published in the journal NeuroRegulation, the research found that our overuse of smartphones has a similar effect on our brains as other types of substance misuse.

“The behavioral addiction of smartphone use begins forming neurological connections in the brain in ways similar to how opioid addiction is experienced by people taking Oxycontin for pain relief — gradually,” Dr. Erik Peper, a professor of health education at San Francisco State University and coauthor of the study explained in a statement.

More: How to Deal With Travel Anxiety So It Doesn't Ruin Your Trip

In addition to making people feel more isolated — despite having access to the world at their fingertips — Peper and his coauthor, San Francisco State University associate professor of health education Richard Harvey, found that the students who took part in their study were also constantly multitasking, using their phones while they studied, attended class or ate. In reality, they said it's more "semi-tasking" than multitasking because the students were doing multiple activities, but only about half as well as they would if they had focused on one at a time. On top of that, Peper said this constant activity allows little time for bodies and minds to relax and regenerate — something important not just for students, but for the rest of us too.

But Peper and Harvey don't think we should be so hard on ourselves, because our digital addiction is the product of the tech industry's efforts to maximize corporate profit. “More eyeballs, more clicks, more money,” Peper said in a statement. “But now we are hijacked by those same mechanisms that once protected us and allowed us to survive — for the most trivial pieces of information.”

So, is there anything we can do about it? Peper and Harvey said there is: Just like we can train ourselves to consume less sugar, we can do the same for our addiction to smartphones, computers and other devices.

According to Peper, the first step is to recognize that tech companies take advantage of and manipulate our biological responses to danger. In other words, when we hear that ping of our phone, we shift into high-alert (and sometimes anxiety) mode, preparing ourselves for what we might find when we check the message — whether it's a text, email or social media notification. To combat this, Peper suggests turning off push notifications completely to cut that anxiety off at the source.

But couldn't that make a person more anxious — not knowing whether they were needed or if something bad happened? Maybe, but Peper recommends scheduling specific times throughout the day dedicated to responding to email and social media. This way, you can focus on important tasks during the rest of the day without being distracted by messages and feeling compelled to respond to them immediately.

More: Laughing Has Some Health Benefits — No Joke

The study also mentioned some more obvious ways of dealing with digital addiction, like closing (or stepping away from) social media accounts or having a group place their smartphones in the center of the table while dining together, with the first person to took at their device required to buy the meal.

Will these tips completely solve the problem and work for everyone? Probably not, but at least it's a first step. Now, put down your phone and interact with another human.

2 Huge Stars Are Joining The Big Bang Theory for the Season Finale

The creators of The Big Bang Theory have had some major casting coups when it comes to cameo appearances over the years. Everyone from Stephen Hawking to Bob Newhart and, most recently, celebrated sci-fi author Neil Gaiman has popped up on the hit CBS show. Now, with the Season 11 finale approaching, the folks over at the TBBT casting department have outdone themselves once again with a new casting announcement that will delight all pop-culture junkies.

On Tuesday, it was announced on the Big Bang Theory Twitter account that Mark Hamill would be appearing on the finale, which will see geeky lovebirds Sheldon and Amy finally get hitched. Hamill is one of a handful of Star Wars alums who have appeared on the show — James Earl Jones and Carrie Fisher, who both played fictional versions of themselves. TV Line is even speculating that he may be the wedding officiant, which would be a hilarious surprise that might just leave Sheldon too distracted to get on with the ceremony. Poor Amy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hamill will be joined by Kathy Bates as well as a slew of fan-favorite characters for the May 10 finale. Other guest stars will include John Ross Bowie, returning as Barry Kripke; Laurie Metcalf as Sheldon’s mother, Mary; and Wil Wheaton will play a fictional version of himself. Additionally, Sheldon’s sister, Missy (played by Courtney Henggeler), will make her first appearance since Season 1, and Jerry O’Connell will join the cast as Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie. Oh, and for a fun twist, mostly silent comedian Teller (of magician/comedy duo Penn & Teller) is also on the guest list.

The show does have a history of touching on a guest star's most famous roles as part of their character, even when they're playing themselves, so it's possible they'll follow the same trend for this finale. Obviously, Hamill is most well-known for his role in the Star Wars saga, but he's also an accomplished voice actor with roles in animated series like Justice LeagueTrollhunters and Amazing Spider-Man. It's no stretch to think of Sheldon geeking out on any of those details just as much as he does about Luke Skywalker. Bates made her role of Annie Wilkes in Stephen King's Misery absolutely iconic, but she's also had starring turns in Dick TracySix Feet UnderTitanic and American Horror Story, so the producers may also be cooking up some kind of play on one of her characters as well.

It's been a long road to the altar for Sheldon and Amy; the couple has been dating for seven long seasons! If you can remember back to the beginning of their love story, they met when Raj and Howard created a dating profile for Sheldon as a joke, and Amy was online-dating to appease her mother. From there, the rest feels like it's been a whirlwind. We’ve seen them create a dating contract, hammer out the details of intimacy and match wits more times than we can count. It makes sense the producers have a few extra-special tricks up their sleeves for the nuptials of this extra-special couple.

In the end, the guest stars will be fun, but like any wedding, the best part will be seeing the joy on the happy couple’s faces as they promise to love one another while surrounded by their friends.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani our favorite kind of #RelationshipGoals and this couple is only getting cuter as time goes by. Their relationship has fascinated us since the couple began dating a few years ago and today, we can help but swoon every time we see the happy couple out and about.

Now, Shelton is ready to give us all an important life update about if and when he's be ready to walk down the aisle once again. When Shelton met up with CMT’s Cody Alan before the 2018 ACM Awards, the host asked if the singer ever has marriage on the mind. “I think about it. I don't think it's anytime soon or anything. The more time that goes by, I guess, the closer you'd be getting to that." Can’t you just hear Shelton saying that with his trademark emphasis on soon?

But it’s clear that Shelton has fallen hard and fast for the platinum-haired beauty and he’s left a trail of comments over the years as proof. He takes just about every opportunity to talk about her, waxing on about her beauty, her kids, and even love itself.

Shelton and Stefani famously met while they were judges on The Voice. He’s described the process of falling in love while also falling out of marriage. In 2015 Shelton’s relationship with fellow country singer Miranda Lambert was ending and he told people on the show so they wouldn’t mistakenly refer to her as his wife during filming. Unbeknownst to him, Stefani was also splitting from her husband of 20 years, Gavin Rossdale, and the two found companionship, checking in to see how each other was doing, according to Billboard Magazine. “It went from...checking in on each other once a week through email...to maybe three times a week, then every day, to 'Hey, here's my phone number if you ever want to text.' Next thing I know, I wake up and she's all I care about, and I'm wondering if she feels the same about me.”

She did, and the rest is history. Since then the couple have been splitting time between his home in Oklahoma and hers in Los Angeles. And he loves having a ready-made family when her and her three sons are around. He told People that it took some time to figure out what his role would be in their lives but that now he loves having them as part of his world.“The best part for me, selfishly, is discovering a part of myself that I guess I never really knew was in there. It’s definitely an instinct that kind of kicks in.” That instinct has even made him want to try for some of his own, though a source told US Weekly that they’ve recently taken some pressure off the plans for a baby to just wait and see if it happens.

Shelton would probably love to see Stefani barefoot and pregnant running around his farm though. In fact that au naturel, homebody look is how he likes her best. Soon after he was named People’s Sexiest Man for 2017 he told the magazine that his favorite thing to see on her “is no makeup on whatsoever. She’s literally ageless. It’s unbelievable” he said.

But if Shelton popped the question what would Stefani have to say in return? On Ellen recently the host asked the singer just that and she deferred the question back, asking Degeneres what her advice would be. I love being married. I think you should get married,” said Ellen, before adding that Stefani should at least keep it in mind. “I do. I think about it all the time,” replied Stefani.

So now everybody knows that they're both thinking about it, can a ring be very far behind? We kind of hope not yet, this crazy-in-love phase is still too cute to let go of yet.
