7 Beginner Hacks for Ensuring Your False Eyelashes Last

$

What’s everyone’s excuse for avoiding false eyelashes? According to expert Mabel Lee, people love reverting to the old “they’re too difficult to apply” reason. That’s exactly why she created the Velour Effortless Collection, the latest offering from her lash line, which has been a top seller in Sephora since 2015.

How to put to apply fake lashes 1

How to put to apply fake lashes 1

There are many reasons to consider adding one of her lash styles to your routine — like the curved tool for placement and latex-free glue for hold they come with — but what we really appreciate is that it’s truly meant for the beginner or someone who simply wants to glue and go.

Ahead, Lee shares seven things to keep in mind if you’re applying falsies for the first time and feel intimidated by what should be an easy process.

More: 7 Amazing Tricks for the Best Eyelashes of Your Life

Glue takes time

One of the biggest mistakes Lee sees people make while applying falsies is not waiting for the glue to dry. When we rush to put them on, this only means they’re more likely to fall off in the middle of the day. Instead, she says to “give the glue 10 to 20 seconds for it to get tacky. It will make your lash application so much easier.”

Angles matter

When you don’t have the luxury of a makeup artist applying lashes for you, it’s really about the angle in which you apply them. As you’re putting them on yourself, Lee says to put a mirror directly underneath your chin so you can look down and get a really good view of your natural lashes simultaneously. Looking down leaves more room for you to get the falsie directly on top of your natural ones.

Lee’s Velour lashes actually come with a tool that looks like tweezers at first glance but is actually curved to the natural shape of your eye. If you have shaky hands, this makes laying the lashes atop your own eyelashes much easier; just be sure to grab the whole false lash instead of just the ends. Doing the latter may lead to the hairs ripping off prematurely.

Toggle first

You should be able to get a good number of wears out of false eyelashes, but some of that depends on how you treat them fresh out the box. Lee says that whenever you’re using a new pair for the first time, you should “toggle the lashes to loosen the band. It just makes it so much more flexible” and easier to curve to the shape of your eye.

More: 8 Drugstore Mascaras That Actually Make Your Lashes Look Longer

Avoid mascara

A lot of eyelash tutorials teach us that mascara is the best way to make your falsies look like the real thing. And although makeup does sometimes enhance their look, Lee says we should actually avoid mascara if we really want them to last long. Instead, focus on buying quality lashes that don’t need that extra enhancement.

Another way to ensure your lashes stay full and healthy-looking is to make them the last step of your makeup routine.

“It should truly be your last step,” says Lee. “I do all my eye makeup, my foundation, and when I’m done, I pop on my lashes. If you really want mascara, apply it on your natural lashes first, wait for it to dry and then put your lashes on.”

Don’t overclean

Sure, lashes are prone to collecting dust when we don’t store them in a case (luckily, Velour has those), but you should also avoid overcleaning them or soaking them.

“A lot of people, after every use, they start pulling on the glue. Ours melts into the band, so you don’t need to do that,” says Lee. “I usually start peeling the glue after six uses. If it really gets dirty, get a Q-tip, dip it in makeup remover, and brush off the excess.”

And if you accidentally get into the shower or pool with them on, simply air-dry after.

Secure the ends

Have you ever found yourself walking down the street and all of a sudden making painfully weird faces because the wind blew off half your eyelash? Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for that. Unless you’re carrying lash glue in your purse — like Lee does — you can either hold down the lash to get that grip back on or prepare ahead of time.

“I always put extra glue on the ends to really secure that hold,” says Lee. Also, if the lashes you’re wearing are a fresh pair and you really want them to stay on, go in with two layers of glue before applying. However, keep in mind that the second and third time around, “you only have to apply one because it’s already tacky.”

More: How to Apply Individual Lashes in Under a Minute

Mind your makeup

And lastly, wearing fake lashes without mascara doesn’t mean your eyes should be completely neglected at the end of the night.

“I always make sure I take my makeup off. Some people when they wear eyelashes leave the glue and residue on.” Keep your glands and natural lashes clean at all times to ensure seamless falsie application from day to day.

Ben Affleck & Lindsay Shookus Were Spotted Doing Very Couple-y Things

If we're being honest, there's a small part deep inside us that still isn't over Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's breakup. We may never be fully over it. But regardless of how we feel, they're moving on with their lives, and with how cute and happy Affleck and his girlfriend, Lindsay Shookus, are always looking, we might be starting to get more on board with their relationship.

More: Ben Affleck Didn't Realize Women Were Going Through "Ugly & Disturbing" Things

Most recently, they were spotted kayaking together in Hawaii, where Affleck is shooting his new film, Triple Frontier and where Shookus apparently joined him for some fun in the sun, because everyone is ready to get away from this never-ending winter, amirite?

Affleck and Shookus definitely looked like a strong team as they battled waves in their kayak.

Affleck definitely seems to have been doing some serious work on himself since his split from Garner. The pair announced their separation in 2015, and in early 2017, Affleck released an emotional statement revealing he had completed treatment for his long-documented alcoholism. "I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be," he wrote on his Facebook page at the time. "I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step."

Since that announcement, Affleck seems to have been focusing on bettering himself and taking care of himself. He's been working a lot, but was also spotted looking happier and more put together amid claims that Garner, after their split, staged an intervention that got him into treatment. And Shookus certainly seems to be a good influence — Affleck looks happy whenever he's spotted with her.

The Disturbing Thing That Happens to Your Body When You Eat Out a Lot

Normally, when you hear about not eating in restaurants too frequently, it's because of the high amounts of salt and fat used in the industry to make the food taste so good. While that's still true, a new study has pointed to another hazard of eating out: ingesting potentially hazardous chemicals known as phthalates.

Phthalates are typically used to make plastic more flexible and durable, but somehow they've also wound up in our restaurant food supply. Although the full extent of what phthalates do to our bodies is unknown, recent research involving animals found that they can mess with the organs and glands that produce hormones.

More: Can You Really Get Addicted to Food?

The new study, published in the journal Environment International, analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which involved 10,000 people over the age of 60 between 2005 and 2014. Part of study involved participants keeping daily food diaries as well as providing urine samples. Phthalates pass through our bodies in about one day, so researchers took a look at the correlation between levels of the chemical and when the participants recorded that they ate out in restaurants.

“We found that people who eat out more — at full service restaurants, cafeterias, and fast food restaurants— have nearly 35 percent higher phthalate levels than people who eat at home more often,” senior author Ami Zota, an assistant professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health, told Gizmodo.

Although this particular study focused on people aged 60 and older, researchers are especially concerned about children who dine in restaurants because they would be the most affected by a hormone-disrupting chemical given that they are still developing.

MoreWhat to Do if You've Overeaten

Two phthalates were found most frequently in the study, both of which are used in food packaging.

So what can be done about it? The first step is getting them out of the food supply.

“There are some things that individuals can do to reduce their exposure to harmful phthalates. For example, they can dine out less and prepare more of their meals at home. They can also increase their intake of fresh foods and decrease their consumption of processed or packaged foods,” Zota told Gizmodo. “However, since these chemicals are ubiquitous in our environment, we also need changes in policy and in the marketplace to ensure that everyone has greater access to healthy food.”

The April Fools' jokes are already here, friends, so keep your wits about you. The first of the day is a video put out by Warby Parker (you know, the hipster-loved eyeglasses company) and Arby’s (of fast-food roast beef fame) have collaborated to create a chuckleworthy brand: WArby’s.

WArby’s, they claim, is the “intersection of meats and seeing,” further illustrated in the video by a Venn diagram.

Their first product is the WArby’s onion ring monocle. Don’t worry; they have plenty of examples of how to wear the fried “eyepiece,” although both CEOs understandably seem wary of putting it directly on their face.

The announcement isn’t just a prank, though. It’s also an excuse for both companies to give back. Arby’s is donating to No Kid Hungry, which helps feed the 1 in 6 American kids who face hunger every day.

Their Angus glasses, which appear to be meat-print spectacles, are already sold out, so hurry if you want to grab a T-shirt, hat, messenger bag, sandwich-printed lens cloths or a “shacket.”

Prince Philip's Health Problems Are Preventing Him From Attending Public Events

It's no secret there are some members of the British royal family who are getting a bit grayer by the day. Queen Elizabeth is 91, and her husband, Prince Philip, is even older at age 96. For the most part, you'd hardly know these royals are nonagenarians, partially because they remain so active in their public and civic duties. But lately, health problems have started to slow Philip down, and he's having to miss some events to take care of himself.

Today is the day of the traditional Royal Maundy service at St. George’s Chapel, and while the queen attended as was expected, Philip chose to take the day off.

"The order of service was printed some weeks ago, when it was hoped the Duke would be able to take part," read an official statement from Buckingham Palace. "HRH has since decided not to attend."

Entertainment Tonight reports that Philip is having trouble with his hip, and that's why he's been missing events lately. They claim he also missed a ceremony on the grounds of Windsor Castle last week, though the palace has not confirmed he was even scheduled to attend that in the first place.

Since stepping down from his official role, though, Philip has remained active in attending events alongside the queen whenever possible. He is also gearing up to attend his grandson Prince Harry's wedding in May. Royal expert Katie Nicholl recently told Entertainment Tonight that Harry likely chose that wedding date specifically for Philip.

"One of the reasons that Prince Harry has wanted this wedding to happen quite quickly — this is really whirlwind by royal standards — is because his 96-year-old grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, is retired now and Prince Harry really wants him to be at his wedding," she said. "He's incredibly close to his grandfather and, being 96, Harry thought it was a great thing to [have] the wedding sooner rather than later, so his grandfather could be there, fit and healthy."

In that vein, it could be that Philip is skipping out on some events now to make sure he's strong and ready for the royal wedding. Since Philip and Harry are so close, the big day likely takes precedence over a few appearances here and there for the duke.

Roseanne Barr Got a Little Call From President Trump After the Reboot Premiere

Roseanne Barr has long been one of President Donald Trump's most ardent celebrity supporters, and as we found out earlier this week, the feeling is mutual. After the Roseanne reboot's unexpectedly popular premiere on Tuesday, Barr revealed she got a congratulations call from none other than the president of the United States.

More: Roseanne Barr Is Peak Roseanne on Jimmy Kimmel Live, & It's Perfection

"It was pretty exciting. I'll tell you that much," she said on Good Morning America. "They said, 'Hold please for the president of the United States of America' and [that] was about the most exciting thing ever. It was just very sweet of him to congratulate us."

There was a lot of buzz leading up to Roseanne's premiere, but the show still crushed ratings predictions, drawing 18.2 million viewers, which is 10 percent more than its finale in 1998. Unsurprisingly, most of Roseanne's viewers were in states and districts with a high population of Trump voters. New York and Los Angeles, the country's top viewer markets, delivered lower ratings for Roseanne, while Tulsa, Oklahoma; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Kansas City, Missouri, were its top markets — all areas that Trump carried easily in the 2016 election. The only blue market to deliver high ratings for Roseanne was Chicago, where the show is set, but despite being a huge market, it was only the fifth-highest for the show. All the markets that performed better were smaller.

More: Here's Why It's the Perfect Time for a Roseanne Reboot

It's no wonder Trump voters turned out for the Roseanne reboot since Barr's very public support for the controversial president made a lot of headlines leading up to the premiere. She's historically been unapologetic about her support for Trump even though she never formally endorsed him. She told The Hollywood Reporter during the race, "We should be so lucky if Trump won, because then it wouldn’t be Hillary," drawing praise from Trump then.

Utah Passes Controversial ‘Free-Range Parenting’ Law

People are all about free-range eggs and meat these days — but did you know about "free-range parenting"? I didn't either until Utah just passed a law in its favor.

Don't worry; no one is priming kids for the butcher. Instead, free-range parenting refers to granting children independence to walk around in public spaces without adult supervision. Yep, it's as simple as that. If you had no idea this was illegal before, you are not alone.

More: Cop Threatens Parents Who Let Kids Play Alone in the Park

According to The Washington Post, a New York mother coined the term free-range parenting back in 2008 after she allowed her 9-year-old son to brave the subway and find his way back home all by himself (per his persistent request). As you might imagine, some parents were furious when this mom wrote a book touting the benefits and encouraging other parents to let their children experience the same kind of independence. But despite controversy, legislators in Utah overwhelmingly agreed this week that children who are old enough "to avoid harm or unreasonable risk of harm" should be allowed to "walk, run or bike to and from school, travel to commercial or recreational facilities, play outside and remain at home unattended."

The law would make it more difficult for state child-welfare authorities to punish parents for negligence as long as the children appear mature and capable enough to roam on their own. (Of course, there will be exceptions for children who seem malnourished or otherwise neglected.)

More: Kids Snatched by CPS Because Parents Won't Change Their "Free-Range" Ways

One of the state senators responsible for the bill, Republican Sen. Lincoln Fillmore told KUTV in February he believes "it's not neglect if you let your child experience childhood. The message is you need to protect your kids, but we are not doing kids any favors if we shelter them to the point where they are not learning how to function." Truer words may never have been spoken.

U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) tweeted his support for the bill and said he looks "forward to continuing to champion this issue on a national level."

Many people have shared that they're grateful for the new law since it reflects how they were raised themselves.

"'Free-range parenting' used to just be called 'parenting normal children in the 80s/90s," one person tweeted. "Then parents went all helicopter crazy and stopped letting kids do anything."

Some other people, however, haven't spoken as favorably.

"So Utah now has legalized free range parenting. Just like livestock, allowing you kids no supervision," one person tweeted. "What is this country coming to? Great way to have predators visit Utah. Broadcast this new law in MSM. So stupid!"

"Free range parenting is just lazy parenting that endangers children because parents are like 'uh yeah my kid is mature and I don't wanna pick them up from school,'" another critic wrote. "Emotional maturity doesn't stop human trafficking, go raise a sack of flour."

Carl's Jr. Tried to Make 'SpielBurgers' a Thing, Steven Spielberg Responds

"@StevenSpielberg hasn't signed off yet, but we're pretty sure he'll be down with it," the fast-food chain tweeted.

For one, that doesn't sound appetizing (sorry, not sorry); and two, Spielberg caught wind of it and was 100 percent not game. In fact, he put a stop to it really quickly, hopping on film company Amblin Entertainment's Twitter account with the following "official statement."

"Hey there," Spielberg, who doesn't have his own Twitter account, started. "It's recently come to my attention that Carl's Jr. wants to rename their Charbroiled Sliders 'SpielBurgers,' and they're pretty good, but I'm passing. Cease and desist. You can't do it. Sorry, guys."

They then got booted from Amblin and proceeded to leave a note on Spielberg's car.

Reason No. 1,323,497 why online celebrity death hoaxes are definitely vile: Jeff Goldblum's mom, Shirley, read one and thought she'd lost her son for good.

The actor and ridiculously handsome dad visited Watch What Happens Live today and revealed that once upon a time (the prehistoric era of 2009), some of his loved ones believed he had perished after someone posted a fake story on the internet.

"Somebody had put online that I'd fallen off a cliff in New Zealand," he said. "Before we got the word out and I could call everybody, yes, my mom. She called and was like, 'Jeffrey, are you all right? Are you all right?'"

When Cynthia Nixon challenges New York incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the state's Democratic primary this September, it won't be without support — from other celebrities and her friends. Several of Nixon's Sex and the City costars have come out with endorsements for her, including Sarah Jessica Parker, who just backtracked on a more neutral statement to officially endorse Nixon's candidacy.

Before this endorsement, Parker released a statement via a rep, saying, "Cynthia has been my friend and colleague since we were little girls. I look forward to talking to her about her New York State gubernatorial bid." Her enthusiastic endorsement is a 180 from her initially cool acknowledgment of Nixon's candidacy.

Kim Cattrall, who has been publicly feuding with her former costars for years, was similarly noncommittal.

Outside the SATC world, though, Nixon isn't quite as popular. New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has already announced her support for Cuomo over Nixon. Her spokesperson told New York Daily News, "Kirsten is a friend of Governor Cuomo’s and supports his campaign. He’s been a leader on issues she cares deeply about like marriage equality, paid family leave, and campus sexual assault to name a few. She believes he deserves to be reelected."

Some voters are already lauding Nixon for her stances on New York's widening wealth gap, declining public education system and outdated subway. She's particularly popular among former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders' Democratic-Socialist fan base. Her platform focuses largely on tackling inequality, and she also criticizes Cuomo, implying that he's not a "real Democrat."

"He let the Republicans gerrymander their own districts to suppress Democratic voters, especially voters of color. Then, when Democrats still won a majority, he cut a backroom deal that allowed Republicans to take over the State Senate through the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) — a group of breakaway Democrats who voted with the Republicans to hand them control, and with it, the power to block almost all of our key Democratic legislative priorities," she writes on her campaign website. "Andrew Cuomo has given massive tax breaks to corporations and the super rich while starving the state and its cities of the most basic services and decimating our infrastructure. His inhumane budgets have been passed on the backs of our children, our working and middle class, and our elderly."

But Nixon has been criticized for her lack of governing experience, prompting former Cuomo staffer Christine Quinn to call her an "unqualified lesbian." Nixon has since fired back, writing on Twitter, "When I announced yesterday that I’m running for gov, one of Cuomo’s top surrogates dismissed me as an 'unqualified lesbian.' It’s true that I never received my certificate from the Department of Lesbian Affairs, though in my defense there’s a lot of paperwork required."

Her fan base has since adopted "unqualified lesbian" as something of a campaign slogan, and Nixon is now selling campaign merch branded with the phrase.

With six months to go before the primary, there's still a lot of campaign left to run. And while Nixon may face an uphill battle asking Democrats, who are understandably gun-shy about voting for celebrities in the Trump era, for their votes, she's already making waves in what is sure to be an interesting race.

Not Your Mom's Adoption: What the Process Looks Like in 2018

$

0

Since the first specialized adoption agencies were established in 1910, there has been a transformation in the adoption process throughout the United States. In my work as an adoption consultant over the past 14 years, I've seen drastic changes; in fact, domestic infant adoption in 2018 is different than it was even just a few years ago.

So if you're thinking of adopting, it's more important than ever to do your research and be prepared — because adoption is not at all the same as when it was when your parents might have considered it or even your older siblings and friends. Here are three major ways in which the process continues to evolve in 2018 and beyond.

More:  The Real Cost of Fertility Treatments & Adoption

Fewer domestic placements

The number of domestic adoption placements has gone down in recent years for a few reasons — namely, but not limited to, the increased access and ability for expectant moms to terminate a pregnancy and the decreased societal stigma associated with single motherhood. This reduction of domestic adoption numbers has also been exacerbated by the closing of international programs. Today, there are significantly fewer robust international adoption programs than there were even just a few years ago. With the reduction in international adoption options, more and more adoptive-parent hopefuls are pursuing domestic adoption.

As a result of the confluence of these trends, there are now fewer babies being placed for adoption domestically and more hopeful adoptive parents looking to adopt those very few babies. So, naturally, adoption wait times have increased.

These days, it's more important than ever to:

  • Be proactive in your adoption search

  • Work with multiple placement sources so you see as many opportunities as possible

  • Have a great personal profile so when you are presented to an expectant mom, you have a greater chance of getting selected

Since adoption consultants help with all of those aspects of adoption, more and more hopeful adoptive parents are hiring a consultant to help guide them through the journey. This can leave those who are unable to work with a consultant at a disadvantage in this difficult adoption climate.

Higher fall-through rates

It's much easier than it used to be for prospective birth moms to get information online and as a result to have a better understanding of their rights. This is a wonderful benefit for all members of the adoption triad, as it’s in no one’s best interest for expectant moms to make uninformed choices. The downside is that the good old internet has also made it easier for those with bad intentions to game the system and financially scam hopeful adoptive parents.

While fall-throughs do not happen nearly as often as many people fear, there are more scams out there today than in years past, simply given the ever-multiplying methods of online interaction. Then, of course, some fall-throughs are due to expectant mothers having a change of heart — perhaps thanks to society being more supportive of single motherhood or any other myriad reasons.

For potential adoptive parents to protect themselves, it’s more important than ever for them to have some sort of unbiased and experienced advocate on their adoption team to help conduct a balanced risk assessment on every opportunity with which they are presented.

Implications of an online presence

What is the first thing you do when you have a question and don’t know the answer? Google it, of course! Expectant moms do the same. When they first start considering adoption, they usually search online for information and may start looking for potential adoptive parents there as well. But beware: Advertising online is high-risk. It’s much easier for a scammer (an "expectant mom" who may not even be pregnant or who may not even have a uterus!) to hide behind a computer as opposed to maintaining an in-person relationship with an adoption agency.

One way to get the benefit of online visibility with little of the risk is to work with adoption agencies and attorneys that do significant online outreach for potential birth moms but who do not post your profile containing your direct contact information. Not only does this relieve you from having to learn all about online advertising, algorithms and data, but it also leaves the responsibility to the agencies to vet any expectant mom who contacts them. Ideally, they’ll do so through in-person interactions prior to any match being made.

More: I Don't Regret Giving My Son for Adoption

If you are considering adoption, it’s important to understand today’s landscape because information and advice you receive from those whose adoption experience is from even just a few years ago may no longer be valid. Although the recent changes may seem to make adoption more challenging, that’s not necessarily the case. As long as you stay informed and approach the process with a knowledgeable, respectful and open-minded perspective, adoption can be a beautiful and successful way to grow your family.

James Lim Explains That Intense Survivor 'Death Glare'

It's being dubbed the "death glare." James Lim's elimination on Survivor: Ghost Island sparked the strongest reaction yet as his eyes unleashed a powerful stare nobody will soon forget. In our one-on-one interview with James, he revealed what was rushing through his mind during in that very moment his torch was snuffed. He also explained why Wendell Holland was his target and talked about his desires to compete on the Amazing Race.

SheKnows: You looked genuinely shocked when the votes fell against you. Was your elimination a true blindside or did you have a sense it was coming?

James Lim: It wasn't a blindside like a typical blindside. My shock was more the 4-1 result. I knew, obviously, ever since the swap happened, I was on the bottom whichever way you cut it. It wasn't a true blindside, but I thought I had done a good job trying to flip Angela. My game plan was to stick with Michael and Angela to vote Desiree off. I think that was more or less where my reaction came from.

James Lim voted off Survivor: Ghost IslandImage: CBS

SK: That look on your face is definitely a memorable moment. What was going through your mind? Was that a look of anger?

JL: [Laughs.] It wasn't a conscious thing for me, so I'm glad a lot of people are talking about it. There are now memes and GIFs about it, comparing it to Michaela's reaction from Season 33. Jeff [Probst] told me after the game that he saw in my expression, in that two-second span, go from shock to anger to acceptance. I think that's what happened. The look that I gave to Michael was more of, "You flipped on me." People are calling it a death glare, but it wasn't anything personal, obviously. It was more of me processing my game being over. I'm glad I went out with some kind of a memorable reaction.

James Lim death glare Survivor Ghost Island

SK: Michael has been a physical threat with a target on his back for most of the game. How did he get through another elimination? Why was it you instead of him?

JL: It happened exactly because of the way the swapped tribes ended up being. We have Kellyn, the mastermind of the Malolo swapped strategy, literally just murdering Brendan and Stephanie Johnson. Then you have Michael who basically was in survival mode for a long time. He swapped into the minority again with Kellyn. Basically, Kellyn told Michael, "You know you're screwed. Come with me." He really was swayed by that. Kellyn saw Michael as more of a number than a physical threat at that point. I had proven my loyalty to Malolo instead of showing a willingness to flip. All these factors ended up creating a perfect storm of things that made me the go-to target. It makes sense.

SK: What's your take on Michael today?

JL: He's one of the savviest 18 year olds I ever met in my life. Yes, the vote hurt, and it hurt to watch the whole thing play out again. But honestly, it's a game. Outside of the game in real life, I love the guy as a friend and as a bro. He's a great dude.

SK: Stephanie also said Kellyn is playing a big game. Would you say she's dominating the decisions?

JL: She's not dominating the decisions, but she really is the person that lead the Naviti five to steamroll the Malolos on the other side of the island. She's such a nice person, and she really has great empathy and a big heart. But when she has to play, she plays. I give her a lot of respect. She's a great player. It's weird because she's mainly the reason why I went home, but I can't bring myself to hate her.

James Lim on Survivor: Ghost IslandImage: CBS

SK: Desiree said you were a target because nobody in the tribe had a connection with you. What's your reaction to her statement? Is she right?

JL: With all due respect, I will flat out deny that. You saw a few minutes later Angela said, "I feel like James and I have a real, genuine bond." I had an amazing three days trying to bond as fast as possible with Kellyn and Angela, especially with Angela. Ever since the Morgan vote, it was one of my main objectives to share more about me with her and draw her into our side using loyalty. I talked to her about what our veterans mean to me and the respect I have for them. If she helped me out down the road, I would forever be loyal to her and she would never be at the bottom of any alliance that I lead. I really meant it. I would just not agree with that statement [from Desiree] to be honest.

James Lim on Survivor: Ghost IslandImage: CBS

SK: Let's say the tribal swap didn't happen. Who was your tribe's next target?

JL: If I had my way, Wendell would've gone home. We would've sided up with Chris and Angela with three votes on Dom and Wendell. Dom would've played his Idol, and we would've flushed it out with Wendell going home. That's one of my biggest regrets from the game is not throwing the Immunity challenge and going for them after the Morgan boot. We were in such a good spot. It was our plan to branch off and advocate pair potentials, and get back together to decide who we wanted to side with. I really wish we had done that. I would've gone with the flow. If Laurel really wanted to keep Wendell around, it would've been fine. We were put in such a good spot, and ironically by winning, I lost an opportunity to keep on making the big moves. It ended up resulting in my terrible swap at the end of the day.

More:  Morgan Ricke Reveals the Survivor Castaway Who is Totally Clueless

SK: Why was Wendell the person you targeted?

JL: I personally would've chosen to side with Chris and Angela because Dom and Wendell were savvier players than Chris and Angela. If you keep Chris and Angela, that weakens the Naviti tribe as much as possible. We would take them to the merge and they would get picked off by Kellyn anyway because she hates Chris. That was my plan. The thing with the Morgan vote was to cause massive destruction of Naviti, and I think we achieved that. The next most reasonable choice to keep that going would've been Wendell.

James Lim competes in challenge with Domenick Abbate on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: Before the game, Probst said you had the highest IQ of any contestant in Survivor history. What is your IQ?

JL: It's good to be part of Survivor history like that. I think the result came out as 150-plus. I think it was a perfect score, which meant there was no actual number. I think the cap was at 150, so it was like 150-plus. I didn't expect that, but a lot of pretty brilliant people have played Survivor, so it's humbling to be the record holder.

SK: How did you get on the show?

JL: I had applied to the Amazing Race in my senior year of college with a good friend of mine, and teammate. We got pretty far, but got cut before the final round. They put us on this database for other CBS shows. Fast forward 10 months and I got a call from Lynne Spillman. She was like, "I found you on this database, and I think you'd be great on Survivor." I was like, "I'm in." I just got incredibly lucky to get the chance to play Survivor. I will never forget that feeling of gratitude that I have toward all of CBS for giving me a chance to do this and become a Survivor castaway.

James Lim on Survivor: Ghost Island

SK: Were you a fan of Survivor before you landed on the show?

JL: Oh, no [laughs.] I had known the show, but I was a fan of the Amazing Race. I watched my first episode ever, and it was the Millennials vs. Gen-X premiere, and I got hooked. I'm not just saying this. I got hooked. If you know that you might be on Survivor, and you like the show, it's easy to binge watch. That's how I got through 14 to 15 seasons in four months before flying out to Fiji.

SK: If you could compete on the Amazing Race with any castaway from this season, who would it be?

JL: That's a great one. Either Brendan or Laurel. Brendan because he's just such a quality guy. We were roommates at Ponderosa and on the pre-jury trip. He's just an amazing guy, smart, strong and charismatic. I think we would just crush the whole competition together. Or Laurel. I think we really bonded together and she gets me. I get her.

You Will Not Believe These Unusual Places People Admit to Having Sex

Sex isn't some one-size-fits-all activity. It can include a number of acts with a variety of different people (including yourself) in a wide range of places. While a lot of people opt to have sex in a bed (a tried-and-true classic), others have gotten pretty creative.

Exactly how creative, you ask? Think: the top of the Eiffel Tower, a phone book at EPCOT and in a dentist's chair. We know this because a new survey asked 2,000 Americans to name their riskiest sexual location — and boy, did they deliver.

A very appropriate 69 percent of those surveyed said they have had sex in a place where they were at risk of getting caught — and almost 23 percent said they were caught in the act.

More: Here's What People Got Stuck Inside Their Vaginas Last Year

Other than a bed, the most common places people reported having sex were a car (68 percent), the kitchen (48 percent) and a movie theater (9 percent).

And while, as Americans, we may not be the best at getting exercise outdoors, 76 percent of people surveyed said they've had sex outside. (That has to count for something, right?) The most popular outdoor sex locations include the backyard (62 percent), the beach (46 percent), a hiking trail (31 percent) and a highway rest stop (27 percent).

There might be something to these creative sex settings: 58 percent of participants said having sex somewhere other than a bed made them happier in their relationship, and 70 percent said that having sex in an adventurous location made them feel closer to their partner.

MoreAn Approved List of Things That Can Go Inside Your Vagina

And if you're curious (we know you are), here are 25 of some of the oddest places Americans have admitted to having sex:

  1. Phone booth at EPCOT
  2. Fast-food drive-thru
  3. Behind a convenience store during the day
  4. Their boss’s new desk
  5. Burger King bathroom (we're guessing that respondent was a member of Digital Underground)
  6. Dentist’s chair
  7. While driving 70 mph down I-95
  8. Empire State Building
  9. Historic Native American reservation
  10. On a train track
  11. A barn surrounded by animals
  12. Under the stage during a concert
  13. Courthouse bathroom before appearing in front of a judge
  14. In the car during an automatic car wash
  15. Port-o-potty
  16. Inside a haunted-house attraction
  17. New York City subway
  18. Old castle ruins
  19. Parking lot of a stadium before a basketball game
  20. The dean’s office at their university
  21. Top of the Eiffel Tower
  22. A moving roller coaster
  23. Foyer of office building
  24. The Wonder Wheel in Coney Island
  25. On the right field line during a baseball game

If having sex in an unusual location sounds like a good idea or something you'd like to try, make sure it's something all parties involved are into. Have fun, and don't get caught! (Unless that's the point, in which case, enjoy!)

All The Details You Missed in the Westworld Season 2 Trailer

$

Are you ready to return to Westworld? Because I sure as heck am not ready at all and yet I can't help but get all kinds of excited for the Season 2 premiere (happening April 22 on HBO, by the way) — a feeling which was renewed upon first viewing the official Season 2 trailer. It's been a good, long while since we were all in the Westworld flow last and with details about the upcoming season having been kept under lock and key fairly well since production began, it's fair to say that many of us have been jonesing for a Westworld fix for quite some time. And now, luckily, we've got it.

There's a lot to unpack in the official Season 2 trailer, though, so you'll want to make sure that you've watched it enough times. If there's one thing we know, it's that the show's creators, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, are among those behind-the-scenes who love to pepper in clues that help to reveal deeper layers of meaning in this show. This is already something we saw them do with an animated poster that was released a week ago which was pretty sinister in nature, with a desert landscape with a robotic bird guarding a black hat that has blood seeping out of it. But, as Refinery29 figured out, when you paused the image at exactly the right moment, it revealed a hexadecimal code that turned out to be the address for Discover Westworld: Find the Door, which seemed to tease the upcoming journey faced by the hosts trying to escape out into the real world.

More: The One Big Detail We Spotted in the Westworld Season 2 Sneak Peek Pics

Now, those same ideas of bloodshed, death and finding a way out of the maze (another image that ran rampant in Season 1) have resurfaced along with a ton of other goods in the Season 2 trailer. It opens with Bernard sitting with Dolores. The pair are discussing a dream Bernard had, where he ends up washed on shore, away from the other hosts. "Were you with us?" Dolores asks, to which Bernard replies, "No," and then trying to explain it away: "Dreams don't mean anything, Dolores."

Official Westworld Season 2 Trailer

Official Westworld Season 2 Trailer

One of the things that the Westworld Season 2 trailer makes clear is that Bernard and Dolores will likely be fundamentally opposed, with Dolores apparently leading the rebellion of the Westworld hosts against their human creators. And while Bernard seems to go readily with the humans as they try to track down and suppress the hosts (who are clearly in a state of anger and revolt over earning their consciousness and thus, demanding their freedom), Dolores is fighting back. She is no longer a demure host playing a part. She is shooting at the enemy, taking prisoners and reassuring Teddy that this is exactly what she wants to do.

And it's through Dolores we get the first couple of clues about how Westworld Season 2 is going to be so, so much bigger in scope. We see Dolores in a library, surrounded by books and examining what they hold. Could she be in the now-deceased Ford's library? How has she gotten here?

Westworld Dolores Library

There's also another moment of note: the younger Man in Black (played by Jimmi Simpson) is in one of the programming rooms with Dolores. It looks like he's back in his regular clothes and the look on his face is a bit ominous. There seems to be a confrontational feel to his approach and with Dolores naked and presumably still in compliant host-mode, it looks like we might get even more backstory into how the Man in Black became the dastardly villain he is in present day and why he has such a complex relationship with Dolores.

More: Westworld Season 2 Is Going to Deliver So Many Deaths

Dolores isn't the only one who gets some prime time in the Season 2 trailer, though. Maeve is also a major player and it looks like she is stepping up into a leadership role as well. While Maeve and Dolores seem to face off at one point, making it harder to tell whether or not they're actually going to help or hinder one another, we can tell for certain that Maeve is a determined woman this time around. Determined to find her daughter, determined to escape Westworld, determined to enact some kind of master plan to bring it all crashing to the ground.

Oh, and speaking of a master plan, it looks like we'll actually get to go to Samurai World in Season 2, through Maeve's storylines. We got some glimpses of the other world at the end of Season 1 and now, it seems like we'll be getting even more of an idea of just how vast this world of robot hosts in fantasy lands really is.

Westworld Maeve Samurai World

Some other small details that deserve a little bit of focus: At one point we see Charlotte in a room with multiple Bernards. What the heck is happening there? Why do we have multiple iterations of the same replica of Westworld's creator?

Westworld Multiple Bernards

We also get a better look at Dolores outside of Westworld, although it's not exactly clear how she makes it out of the park. There's a chance that she's taken out by the Man in Black because those same lavish settings we see her in have the same feel of the hallway that the Man in Black is walking down. This kinda makes me wonder whether we're not being tricked into thinking present-day Dolores escapes the park when really its some kind of flashback, wherein Dolores temporarily left with the Man in Black (while he was still pretty smitten with her) and spent some time in the real world before being sent back. Keep an eye on that.

Westworld Dolores Piano

More: The Future of Westworld Is Female & Quite Bloody

"Up until now, the stakes were never real," the Man in Black says at one point in the trailer, with a shroud of mystery around which host he's addressing. "But now, you and the rest of your kind are free." With that freedom comes a major shift in the balance of power in Westworld. The hosts have freedom on their minds and the humans have suppression on theirs. It's going to get dicey as we go deeper into the Westworld maze and see how things go. So, I'll ask you again: Are you ready to return to Westworld?

Should We Put Out a New Couple Alert for Justin Theroux & Aubrey Plaza?

$

It's only been a month since Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux announced they were splitting up and the attention to both Aniston and Theroux's movements in that ensuing month have been, to put it mildly, eagle-eyed. Many of us have become amateur sleuths, following both Aniston and Theroux's movements, trying to catch of glimpse of their faces in a private moment to see if we can really see how they're handling this break-up.

More: No, Olivia Munn Is Not Dating Justin Theroux

So, it would seem only natural that we're now all wildly curious (myself included) what the real deal is with Theroux and Aubrey Plaza, who were spotted hanging out together in New York City earlier this week. The Daily Mail focused with laser-like intensity on the longtime friends (Theroux had a short stint on Parks & Recreation, the show that served as Plaza's breakout), wondering if this was just a chill hangout or if they were, y'know, hanging out. The Mail also posted some photos of Theroux and Plaza, who were caught by paparazzi strolling down a New York City street and seeming to just be having an amicable chat.

Let's take a beat and assess this situation, shall we? First off, these photos are interesting, but they're not definitive proof that Theroux and Plaza are an item. Sure, it'd be cool if these two people, who have known each other for a long time and seem comfortable in one another's company, suddenly got together; who doesn't love love? But we shouldn't get too excited that Theroux and Plaza are now an item, especially when a source told People magazine that "they met to discuss a potential film project."

In fact, this feels like yet another instance of Theroux's post-Aniston life continuing to endlessly fascinate us. He's taken an interesting route back to singledom, still making public appearances, hanging out with friends, posting on Instagram and just living his life — like a normal person.

More: Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux Are Splitting Up

It's also a little unfair to bring Plaza, who has kept her romantic life fairly separate from the public eye over the years, into this whole speculative mess as well. Let her do her thing, people! She's busy gearing up for the release of the second season of her hit show, Legion, marching with her other Parks & Rec friends and just living her life; she should just be allowed to just that.

So yes, hats off to these two if this is more than just a business meeting and friendly hangout. But if it's not, then we should just let 'em be.

Does Lavender Really Help You Sleep Better?

$

Next time you’re lying awake at night, type “lavender” and “sleep” into Amazon. You’ll be amazed at the endless list of results. Lavender sprays, lavender oils, lavender pills, patches, salts and soaks — all claiming to help insomniacs get their life back. But does any of it actually work?

“It is biologically plausible,” board-certified sleep medicine specialist Dr. Lisa Shives tells SheKnows. “There’s no good evidence that lavender helps individuals fall asleep, but there’s no data against it, either.”

Besides smelling wonderful, lavender, the purple-flowered herb scientifically known as lavandula, is often thought to have stress- and anxiety-reducing capabilities. A clinical study out of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing shows that lavender has helped everyone from college students to night-shift nurses sleep better, but research is sparse, data groups are small and the actual association between the herb and our z's is often unclear.

Without a ton of academic research done on the subject — something Shives attributes to the influence of big pharmaceutical companies — it’s difficult for doctors to develop a chemical cause-and-effect relationship between lavender and sleep. However, sleep specialists aren’t ready to discount the herb entirely. Lavender seems to work for some patients, but maybe in a different way than we might first think.

More: The Benefits of Aromatherapy Are More Than Pretty Scents

“Our brains tie smell most strongly to memory,” says Dr. W. Chris Winter, neurologist and author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How To Fix It. “According to some studies, there is something inherent to the property of lavender that makes one sleep better. But it could just be reminding somebody of what their bed smelled like when they were young or the diapers they wore as a baby.”

It makes sense. When we catch a whiff of the sweet aroma of our mom’s best recipe or the distinct fragrance worn by an old summer fling, our minds are momentarily placed at ease. According to our experts, lavender aromatherapy may work similarly by tying the pretty scent to the memory of a really good night's sleep.

Winter often suggests that traveling patients spray lavender onto their pillow at home at night and use the same spray when trying to fall asleep at hotels. “If you set yourself up to associate this unusual smell of lavender with sleeping in your own bed, it tricks your brain into thinking you’re at home when in fact you’re not,” Winter explains, adding that this technique can be tested using anything with the scent of lavender, be it a spray, a diffused oil or perfumed lotions and creams.

But when it comes to ingesting lavender through oral capsules, Shives remains wary.

“What you often find with these ‘natural’ oral remedies is that the ingredient list is made up of a combination of things, and lavender is only one of them,” she says. “When I take something off of a shelf in a plastic bottle in a capsule made who-knows-where, I don’t call that natural. We don’t always know what’s in there.”

And she’s right — a quick glance at the some of the labels of common “lavender” sleep-aid pills shows us the lavender in the capsule is also often paired with synthetic ingredients such as sorbitol, magnesium stearate and titanium dioxide. For patients seeking truly natural at-home remedies, Shives recommends using the scent of lavender in its natural state, like in a tea, bundled in a sachet or as an essential oil spray.

Whether or not it biologically impacts your brain, lavender could be effective at calming you down before bed.

Winter says, "It’s often the anxiety about needing to sleep well that disrupts your ability to fall asleep,” not necessarily your genes or a lack of medication. Reducing bedtime anxiety can be as simple as thinking lavender works.

“When someone believes in something, whether it's a lavender spray or a pill that’s being used to treat insomnia, it is possible that the placebo effect overshadows the pharmaceutical effect,” Winter adds. “But if it isn’t dangerous to you and it’s making you feel like your sleep is a little bit better, then does it really matter whether its scientifically proven?”

While he can’t medically explain all the successful creative methods his patients have implemented — ranging from acupuncture to bedside magnets — he suggests patients keep an open mind about finding things that help them sleep rather than immediately reaching for Advil PM.

So go ahead; try it out — lavender in its natural state cannot do the body any harm. And it certainly won’t make your bedroom smell any worse.

Which Winona Ryder Character Said This Sarcastic Line?

OK, full disclosure: I love Winona Ryder on a very deep level. She has played some of the most memorable characters in the last 30-plus years, from Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice to Lelaina Pierce in Reality Bites to her recent work on Stranger Things playing Joyce Byers, a role which has helped earn her a career renaissance of sorts. Ryder has somehow perfected playing women who are tough, intelligent, sarcastic, wry, independent and both very cool and unaware of just how cool they are. I find that at various points while watching a movie with Ryder in it, regardless of the film, I feel unsure whether I want to be friends with her or actually be her.

Luckily for us diehard Ryder fans, this year we get to celebrate the 30th anniversary of two of Ryder's most well-known, career-making films: Beetlejuice and Heathers. In each of these films, Ryder puts her trademark sarcasm into the young women she plays, Lydia and Veronica Sawyer, respectively. Neither Lydia nor Veronica has time to suffer fools, and both use their intelligence and their wit as weapons against their foes and to their advantage. Better still, they can reel off spectacular one-liners and fire off well-timed comebacks with aplomb, making them two of the most interesting characters in recent memory (or so I think, at least).

And so, on this very special occasion, I think we should celebrate Ryder and some of the more sarcastic, wry and insightful characters she has played over the years — including Lydia and Veronica — with the following quiz. Below, you'll find iconic lines that Ryder's characters from Beetlejuice, Heathers, Reality Bites, Little Women and Girl, Interrupted have delivered.

Think you can match the line with the right character? If so, proceed and test your memory on all things Winona Ryder.

Chrissy Teigen is known for a lot of things: Her hilarious and constant tweets, her modeling career, her #RelationshipGoals marriage to John Legend and her true love of food, which culminated in a cookbook, Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat in 2016.

That cookbook is a lot of things — shameless about food porn, true to her trademark humor, full of Teigen eating finger foods in a bathing suit — but vegetarian it is not. There are chicken wing recipes and bacon cornbread and garlic-soy shrimp, mustard-glazed salmon and burgers and honey chicken.

That is to say, she makes no secret of being a meat eater. Yet for some reason, it was a tweet two days ago that sent people over the edge.

Teigen’s thread exploded with vegetarians who were disappointed, shocked, angry. Teigen responded with her characteristic clapbacks.

The blow up is still happening in her thread, with people becoming even more irate and distressed over her responses. However you feel about eating meat or animal products, it did seem like a strange time to come after Teigen, and it’s hard not to feel like the reactions are a turn-off from the lifestyle. Or, as Teigen put it.
