12 Characters Killed Off Grey's Anatomy We're Still Mourning

Destruction. Drama. Death. It's all just another shift for the doctors of Grey's Anatomy. And my God, have we seen so many characters killed off the show.

Just recently, it was announced two of the show's more senior characters are leaving the show at the end of Season 14: Dr. Arizona Robbins and Dr. April Kepner (Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew, respectively). And we don't know if our hearts can take it. Not only are we still reeling over that Season 13 finale when we had to say goodbye to Dr. Stephanie Edwards, but the past decade or so has not been as kind. (Meaning, no, we're still not over Denny's death.)

In memoriam, we're taking a look back at some of the tragic deaths that have rocked our world — and it's really starting to seem like Shonda Rhimes is trying to destroy us one gut-wrenching loss at a time.

1. McDreamy

Let's start things off with a bang, shall we? There's been a ton of death on Grey's Anatomy, but nothing shook us to the core quite like when Dr. Derek Shepherd met his maker. McDreamy was taken from us suddenly in Season 11 after he was involved in a tragic car accident, and the scene where Meredith says her final goodbye to her husband still gives us the chills.

2. Samuel Norbert Avery

It's hard to witness the death of any character, but when a baby dies, it's just devastating. In Season 11, Jackson and April made the hard decision to induce labor early when they learned Samuel's rare medical condition was causing him pain in the womb — and sadly, he didn't make it. Samuel's death was really the beginning of the end of the Japril relationship.

3. Jimmy Evans

Jimmy Evans Grey's Anatomy

Alex Karev's father, Jimmy Evans, died a relatively peaceful death on the Season 10 winter premiere episode after a pretty tumultuous recurring role throughout the season. A former heroin addict and current alcoholic who beat his wife and sons when they were younger, Evans ditched Karev and his siblings early in life. As such, Karev has daddy issues, which manifested in a major way in Season 10 after his girlfriend, Jo, proved Karev's patient was actually his father. Evans' health went downhill after complications from his alcohol and drug abuse lead to cardiac arrest and, subsequently, a botched surgery at the hands of sleep-deprived, ego-trippin' intern Shane. Karev forgave his dad, told him it was OK to let go and said goodbye for the last time.

4. Heather Brooks

She may have been a bit overeager, but we liked Brooks. She was shaping up to be a real contender for favorite resident. Brooks tragically died in the Season 10 premiere after she got electrocuted in the basement trying to find Dr. Webber. Shepherd attempted surgery to save her life to no avail. Yikes.

5. Adele Webber

adele webber gif

Chief Richard Webber's wife, Adele Webber, suffered with Alzheimer's through the last few seasons of her time on Grey's Anatomy. Even though Meredith Grey tampered with her and Shepherd's Alzheimer's drug trial to get Adele the medicine she needed, Adele's Alzheimer's continued to get worse. On the way to Bailey's wedding, Richard received a call from the hospital telling him that Adele was on the way to the hospital. Bailey and Richard headed to the hospital, where Bailey immediately began to work on Adele. They ended up working on her together, though, nearly causing Bailey to totally miss her own wedding. While the talented surgeons were able to save Adele's life on the table, the surgery proved too stressful for her heart, and she died of a heart attack soon after.

6. McSteamy

mcsteamy gif

Remember when Mark Sloan first came to Seattle Grace? Hello, Dr. McSteamy! Sure, he was a bit of a philanderer who wrecked Addison and Derek's marriage in the beginning of the series, but his growth and benevolence later more than made up for his initial shortcomings. He really made us swoon over his love for on/off girlfriend Lexie Grey, which ultimately kind of ended up being the death of him. When he, Lexie and several other Seattle Grace doctors went down in a plane crash, Lexie got crushed beneath debris from the plane and died. Sloan confessed his undying devotion to her in her final moments, lamenting, "[We're] supposed to end up together. We're meant to be." Although it appeared for a time that he'd overcome his injuries, you got the sense the fight was gone from him after he lost Lexie, and he ultimately slipped into a coma and died in the Season 9 premiere.

Next: Lexie Grey

A version of this article was originally published in February 2014.

7. Lexie Grey

lexie gray gif

Kind of just gave this one away, huh? To be honest, we're still not really over this. Lexie was smart; she was funny; and she had a lot more going on upstairs than the Grey's average medical intern. Known particularly for her photographic memory, "Lexipedia" had grown on everyone over the years, including her half-sister Meredith. But, alas, during the Season 8 finale, as she and other doctors struggle to stay alive injured in the wilderness after their plane crash, Lexie died — in quite possibly the most crushing (literally and figuratively) Grey's Anatomy death scene ev-er.

8. Dr. Thomas

We weren't prepared to see Yang lose her mentor when Dr. Craig Thomas died on the operating room floor in Season 9. But we did see that Cristina was able to breathe through the surgery with him literally dying beside her, relying on all the skills he's taught her through the years. Quite poetic, really.

9. Henry Burton

henry burton gif

Oh, Scott Foley, how we love thee. We were super-excited when Foley came to Grey's Anatomy as Henry Burton, a lifelong diabetic who made Dr. Teddy Altman believe in love again. True, she married him at first so that he could benefit from her insurance and get the surgery he needed. But ultimately, their marriage of convenience turned into a real marriage when, in the Season 8 finale, she chose Henry over going to Germany with her on/off boyfriend Dr. Perkins. They kissed, we swooned and then he died. OK, the sequence of events was a bit more spaced out than that, but when he died during surgery performed by Dr. Yang, let's just say we died a little too.

10. Reed Adamson

OK, so not everyone was devastated by the Season 6 exit of Reed Adamson, but that doesn't mean she deserved to get shot in the face.

11. Denny Duquette

denny duquette gif

A heart patient at the hospital, Denny Duquette became friends with Izzie Stevens early in his stay. While he was waiting for a heart transplant, he and Stevens actually fell in love and got engaged. In a desperate move, Izzie cut Duquette's LVAD wire, getting him a new heart. Unfortunately, he developed a blood clot and died. Le sigh... another one bites the dust. Our grief was momentarily tempered in Seasons 3 and 5 when Izzie started seeing him everywhere, but sadly, it turned out he was actually just a symptom of her brain tumor.

12. George O'Malley

The first real heartbreaker on Grey's was the tragic death of everyone's buddy, George O'Malley way back in the Season 6 premiere. He'd finally come out on the other side of his drama with Izzie and his wife-for-a-hot-minute Callie Torres and was totally hitting his stride. When he decided to follow in the military footsteps of Dr. Hunt and enlist in the Army, we knew he was probably leaving the show. However, we didn't realize his exit would be quite so dramatic — on his way to tell his mom about enlisting, he jumped in front of a bus to save a woman's life, sacrificing himself instead. He later died in surgery after a brief period of being the bandaged man whose identity was unknown.

Amid all the rumors about her mental health and a week in which family called police to check on her two different times, Tori Spelling is focusing on the positive. On social media, she's posted about her family and her own strength and hasn't mentioned the trying time she's allegedly going through.

I’m happy. I’m me." With the marker tool, she circled the words, "I'm me" in red, driving that message home.

Still, family and friends have reportedly been worried about Spelling's well-being lately, and last week, her husband, Dean McDermott, called 911 to ask police to check on her. The family has had years of highly publicized money problems, and McDermott has reportedly been struggling to find work, leaving Spelling with the stress of providing for the family.

Can Using a Fitbit Have a Long-Term Impact on Your Health?

Pedometers are nothing new. Wearable devices that tracked your steps were introduced in Japan in the 1960s, and people have been using some version of them since. But once smartphones and dedicated fitness trackers like the Fitbit started gaining popularity in the mid-2000s, even people who didn't own one started to become more aware of our 10,000-steps-per-day goal.

Sure, it's fun to watch your steps turn into miles and compete with your friends and family to see who moves around the most, but are these gadgets actually doing any long-term good?

According to a new study out of University of St George's London, there is some evidence to suggest that using these wearable step trackers may help improve your health beyond the initial new technology excitement period.

More: Exercising for People Who Hate Exercise

The article, published in PLOS Medicine, indicates that people who initially started using a fitness-tracking device as part of a 12-week walking program have more active lifestyles three and four years later. It also stresses that getting around 30 minutes of walking most days of the week can help adults achieve a variety of health benefits.

One part of the study examined a group of 1,023 inactive 45- to 75-year-old adults — some of which received pedometers and advice regarding physical activity, while another group did not. Three years after an initial 12-week walking program, researchers followed up with participants and found that those who used a pedometer in the trail walked an average of around 600 extra steps each day, and got 24 to 28 extra minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity weekly in 10-minute bouts compared to those who did not receive step-tracking devices and advice.

The other part of the study had the same premise and involved 298 individuals from 60 to 75 years old. Four years following their walking program, the group that received the wearable technology and advice were doing approximately an extra 400 steps per day and an extra 33 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity in 10-minute bouts compared to the group who had received usual care.

More7 Yoga Poses for When You're Too Tired to Work Out

“We knew that pedometers could improve physical activity levels in the population in the short-term, but long-term health benefits require sustained increases in physical activity levels," Dr. Tess Harris, professor of primary care research at St George’s University of London, who led both trials, said in a statement. “What is unique about this study is that we have shown that short, simple pedometer-based walking interventions, whether delivered by post, or with advice and support from practice nurses, can lead to greater objectively measured physical activity levels three to four years later.”

The moral of the story is that once you get used to incorporating certain levels of physical fitness in your everyday life, it becomes a habit that you are more likely to stick with. So go out and get those steps!

What 10 Lady Bosses Wish They Knew at 25

They say it's important to find mentors, and who better to be your mentor than a successful woman who's already figured it all out? We interviewed 10 successful women to find out what they know now that they wish they'd known in their 20s. The path to success can be difficult, but with this advice under your belt, making your way in the world might just get a tad easier. See what they have to say and decide how you can take on the world.

1. Slow down

Dia Simms, president of Combs Enterprises, tells us, "If I could talk to my 25-year-old self, I would reiterate that life is not a race. Walk steady in your purpose and enjoy all that is around you. Most importantly, you cannot change time, so enjoy it instead of speeding through it."

2. Don't let other people's timelines dictate your life

Nicole Swarts, attorney and founder of Sprout Law, shared her advice: "There's no timeline to life. You can be in school after 21, married after 25, have a baby after 35 and retire before you're 65. Find what works for you!"

3. Any job can be therapeutic

CNN cohost Alisyn Camerota learned this lesson after losing a job she loved and taking on a new career. "I was so busy chasing stories that I forgot how sad I was," she said. "I learned that there is a psychological payoff to working hard every day. Get to work doing something, anything, even if it's not your dream job."

4. Make fun a priority

Though hard work is important, you've got to let yourself have some down time, says Paige Arnof-Fenn, founder of global branding and marketing firm Mavens & Moguls. "Make time for friends, hobbies, exercise, hanging out, etc. It will never be as easy as it was in high school or college to round up a group of buddies to play, but do not let that stop you."

5. Take care of your body

Ambassador Suzan Johnson Cook, founder of Charisma Speakers, emphasized taking care of the basics. "I wish I knew at 25 the importance of sleep, good eating habits and pacing. You don't have to go so fast. You can have it all — but not all at once."

6. Break the rules that don't make sense

Shelley Zalis, workplace equality advocate and founder and CEO of The Female Quotient, says that not all rules need to be followed. "I'm a big believer in 'uncorporate' rules. For example, I don't believe in punching a clock 9-to-5. I tell my people, 'Don't miss the moments that matter — if your kid has a soccer game at 4 p.m., block it on the calendar like a meeting you can't move, and go!'"

7. Keep learning

Your education isn't over after high school, even if you don't pursue a higher degree, said Miko Branch, CEO and cofounder of Miss Jessie's. "It’s extremely important to remember to take what you learned, either at work or in your personal life, and apply it to the next situation. We need to remember to take every experience you gain as a life lesson and apply it to other situations, even during the tough times."

8. Get out of your comfort zone

"At 25, whenever I thought of a goal that seemed beyond reach, that made me uncomfortable, I would rely on that adage and wouldn't challenge myself to do more," shared Nicole Sodoma, family law attorney and managing principal at Sodoma Law. "Once I gave myself permission to be uncomfortable, I was able to be better, do better and continue to grow personally and professionally."

9. Go with the flow

Don't fight what's happening around you. Sometimes, you just need to go with the flow, slow down and smell the roses, advises Sharon Miller, head of small business at Bank of America. "Be still and see the wholeness around you. Life moves incredibly fast, and it's easy to get swept up in it. Especially in your 20s, you need to remember to relax, take a deep breath and flow with the river sometimes."

10. Network, network, network!

Tracy Steinwand, director of global operations at Subway, told us that building relationships is essential for career development. "At 25, I wish I truly knew the power of building a strong network and relationships. You never really know when your network will support you. Looking back, I realized how much of an impact my network played in every role I've earned. "

With these tips, you can set yourself up for future success in all the years to come.

We're still waiting for Chrissy Teigen and John Legend to adopt us, but in the meantime, we console ourselves with frequent visits to their Instagram feeds and pretend we're their ridiculously cute daughter Luna. Teigen (pregnant) and Legend (not pregnant) took Luna to Hong Kong's Disneyland — and Luna was resplendent as Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

Teigen also included a video detailing Luna's ultimate dealings of shade: Luna, who is not into hugging her mom, happily accepted a hug from... Minnie Mouse. Ouch! "She lets me hug her once a week," wrote Teigen. The shadiest!

Pro tip to Luna: Hug your mama now, kid, before she's wearing a newborn for three months straight.

Teigen and Legend and Luna are all clearly having a blast on the road while they wait for the arrival of Luna's new baby brother. But it's also a melancholy time for Teigen, whose beloved canine, Puddy, died this week. Teigen posted a very sweet video of her husband chuckling and floor-sit-dancing (there really should be a word for this) with one of Luna's toys while it sings "The Wheels on the Bus." Teigen's caption? "Eyes still puffy from puddy tears but they keep me happy." The "they" in question is of course her husband and her daughter (even with a scarcity of Luna hugs).

Ellen Pompeo Addresses Grey's Anatomy Fans' Recent 'Nastiness'

There's been a lot of turnover on Grey's Anatomy lately, and with the announced departures of Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw, fans have had enough. That's fine, but they need to direct their anger somewhere other than the Twitter clapback queen, Ellen Pompeo, who has had enough of the negativity surrounding her costars' exits.

More: 12 Characters Killed Off Grey's Anatomy We're Still Mourning

Fans are rightly angry that Capshaw, who has been a series regular for nine seasons, and Drew, who has starred on 10, are leaving. But there's this rumor that their departure has something to do with Grey's recent salary negotiations and Pompeo's reported $20 million-per-season paycheck. Pompeo is not here for that.

"We R grateful all of you are so passionate but if you knew these two women the way I know them they would not approve of all this nastiness," Pompeo tweeted. "They both are super shiny happy people. I know you’re angry but you’re representation couldn’t be further from who these women actually are."

Pompeo and co-showrunner Krista Vernoff have previously slammed reports that Pompeo's newly increased salary is a point of contention for the cast.

"The suggestion in the Deadline article that our cast changes are in any way related to Ellen Pompeo’s salary renegotiation is wrong and hurtful and misguided," Vernoff wrote on Twitter. "It smacks of an old, broken, patriarchal notion that women must be pitted against each other and that one woman’s success will be costly to others. Ellen Pompeo has not only advocated passionately for her fellow cast members, she has taken the time to educate women worldwide as to how to advocate for themselves and that must not now be twisted."

We're definitely going to miss Capshaw and Drew, but Pompeo isn't to blame for their choices to leave the show. As angry as fans may be, she's right to ask them to play nice and leave her out of it.

Heather Locklear Claims Her Boyfriend Choked Her on the Night She Was Arrested

Updated, March 12, 2018, 11:15 a.m. PT: Could Heather Locklear have been acting in self-defense the night she was arrested for alleged domestic violence? New information obtained from court records shows Locklear told the police her boyfriend, Christopher Heisser, choked her until she couldn't breathe before police arrived at her home that night.

A search warrant notes that when police arrived on the scene, they heard arguing coming from a bedroom. When they entered the room, they saw Heisser "standing on the side of the bed leaning over Locklear and holding her wrists." The documents also say Heisser had a bloody nose and "redness on his chest" where he told police Locklear hit him several times.

The warrant also notes that Locklear yelled multiple times at police that Heisser had choked her, but that she "would not cooperate with the investigation." It's unclear whether this was before or after she allegedly threatened to shoot the police who responded to the home.

Heisser denies the choking allegations and reportedly told police, "I didn’t touch her." According to Us Weekly, Locklear refused medical treatment, but was taken to a hospital anyway following strangling protocol for emergency responders.

A police spokesperson told Us Weekly, "Locklear was uncooperative and agitated" during her arrest, adding, "She was not only verbally uncooperative but physically abusive to officers. She attacked three of our deputies and was arrested. There was also evidence that she had battered her boyfriend."

Locklear has been in a rehab center for treatment since shortly after the incident.

Updated, March 7, 2018, 7 a.m. PT: Heather Locklear seems to be digging herself a deeper hole after her arrest for alleged domestic violence. According to new reports, police searched Locklear's home after she told deputies she would "shoot them if they ever came to her house again," following her Feb. 25 arrest. Police say she made "specific threats" that are now being investigated.

Locklear's rep declined to make a statement, and some sites are reporting she's checked herself into a rehab center amid this new investigation.

Original story, published Feb. 26, 7:50 a.m. PT:

Heather Locklear is facing some serious charges after being arrested on the evening of Sunday, Feb. 26. A Thousand Oaks Police Department captain told The Hollywood Reporter that Locklear was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and assaulting a police officer. She was booked into the Ventura County Jail.

More: Heather Locklear Injured in Car Accident

TMZ reports that the incident happened at Locklear's home in Thousand Oaks, California. According to the 911 call, her brother arrived at her home to find Locklear and her boyfriend fighting. Locklear's brother called 911, and when police arrived, they saw that Locklear's boyfriend had "a visible mark" and they arrested Locklear on suspicion of domestic violence. During the arrest, TMZ reports, she became combative and flailed, kicking and hitting three deputies, resulting in a potential for three counts of battery. Before she was taken to jail, she was reportedly taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Captain Dean Cook of the Thousand Oaks Police Department couldn't reveal many details, but told THR that the one count of domestic violence is a felony and three counts of battery against emergency personnel are misdemeanors. Locklear is no longer in jail after being released early Monday morning. People reports she is due in court on March 13.

More: Heather Locklear Checks Into Rehab for the Fifth Time

This isn't the first time Locklear has faced these kinds of serious issues. In 2012, police were called to the home of Jack Wagner, Locklear's boyfriend at the time, after a fight between the two got physical. Neither wanted to press charges against the other, so neither Locklear nor Wagner was arrested at the time. Reps for Locklear have yet to release a statement about this incident, so we cannot pinpoint why Locklear was reportedly so combative or what may have caused the domestic disturbance between Locklear and her boyfriend.

5 Facts About Vaginas You Need to Know Now

$

Uterus User's Guide

Ah, the vagina: the hardworking, life-giving, often misidentified and misunderstood body part. While we may be getting more comfortable with actually saying the word — which is a step in the right direction — we still have a long way to go before most of the population actually knows what goes on down there. To help you along, here are a few quick vag facts to help you impress your friends.

The vagina may not be where you think it is

Sure, you know the general vaginal vicinity, but contrary to popular belief, the vagina isn't the entire opening between the legs starting at the clitoris and ending at the anus. It's easy to refer to that entire undercarriage as the "vagina," but really, there are a bunch of different parts down there.

Typically, when you see drawings or diagrams, it's of the entire vulva — the name for the external female genitalia. This includes the labia majora and labia minora (the parts that look like lips), the urethra, the ever-popular clitoris and, yes, the vagina (or technically, the vaginal opening). It's easy to slap the "vagina" label on everything, but try to use the correct terms whenever possible — each part is amazing and deserves recognition!

More: Reminder: Vagina Is Not a Dirty Word

Yes, vaginas have natural aromas

People with vaginas have a lot to worry about already without having to stress about what they smell like. And yet an entire industry exists for the purpose of helping you make your nether-regions smell like a bouquet of freshly cut wildflowers. Those products are truly not necessary because it is perfectly normal for vaginas to smell like, well... vaginas.

More: 8 Causes of Vaginal Odor Because No — You're Not Alone

The particular scent depends on the person, their specific set of bacteria, what they eat, how much they exercises — a whole bunch of factors. But if a very strong, unusual smell is emanating from your vagina, it might be time to see a doctor, as it could be a sign of conditions like bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection or a clue that you may have something stuck up there, like a tampon or condom.

If something gets stuck, don't worry

In a perfect world, everything meant to go inside a vagina would slip in and out with ease. However, on occasion, it is possible to get something stuck up there. The good news is that it will come out — usually on its own, but if not, it will with the help of a medical professional.

"The vagina ends at the cervix (bottom of the uterus), so foreign bodies generally have nowhere to go but stay in the vaginal canal," Dr. Laura Hagopian, an emergency room physician tells SheKnows, so no, the object won't somehow sneak through and end up traveling throughout your body.

They expand

If you have a vagina or have seen one up close, you may be wondering how a penis is able to fit in one — let alone how a baby manages to use it as an exit. That's a great question, and the answer is that vaginas have the ability to expand both for penetration (with a penis, toy or fingers) or for childbirth. Most vaginas are 3 to 4 inches deep from their opening to the tip of the cervix. When a person with a vagina gets aroused and more blood flows to the area, it allows the canal to expand and lengthen.

Vaginal orgasms exist, but not necessarily for everyone

Back in the day when we didn't question what old white men said, Sigmund Freud's idea that vaginal orgasms were experienced by "mature" women, while clitoral orgasms were only for "immature" girls was accepted as common knowledge. Not to mention the idea that orgasms courtesy of the vagina (i.e., through penetration) is hella heteronormative.

Now, we know that's total bullshit and that many people with vulvas can only orgasm through clitoral stimulation (and they're not immature at all, Sigmund). In fact, only 1 in 5 women report that they are able to have a vaginal orgasm. At the end of the day, there's no such thing as a "superior" type of orgasm, nor is having an orgasm the be-all and end-all of sex — what's important is that all parties involved are safe, consenting and enjoying themselves.

So, as you can see, there's a lot to know about that little opening between the legs of about half the population. Now go out and spread those... facts.

Meghan Markle has had a lot of firsts since becoming Prince Harry's girlfriend, and then his fiancée. Doubtless, she has a lot more firsts coming her way as she prepares to marry Harry and become an official member of the royal family this May. Today, she had another one: her first public outing alongside Queen Elizabeth II.

More: Meghan Markle Is Picking Up Traditional Royal Habits From Kate Middleton

We already know that Markle has spent some time with the Queen, who had to give her approval of the match before Harry was allowed to pop the question. What we don't know is how much time they've spent together, or whether they're close. Clearly they're friendly, or the Queen wouldn't have given her approval. But during their appearance together, they were never close enough to one another to even appear in a photo together, so Markle appears to still be pretty low on the family totem pole.

Markle and Harry appeared along with Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton, and the Queen, on Commonwealth Day in London. The whole royal family got together to celebrate the Commonwealth Day Observance Service, and everyone was all smiles walking into the service. For the most part, Markle and Harry stayed near William and Middleton. The four of them are good friends, and they smiled and chatted during their appearance together.

This is the first time we know that Markle spent time with the Queen since Christmas, when she reportedly joined the family's celebrations at the Queen's Sandringham Estate, north of London. While the opening credit scene for the show's revival, set to premiere later this month, features some new characters, there are definitely plenty of throwbacks to the original. And while this quick bit of exposition helps reset one major Roseanne storyline right off the bat, that's all we'll get to see reset for now. As E! notes, Dan's death isn't the only thing being retconned in Season 10 of Roseanne. Other crucial storylines, including Aunt Jackie's coming out and who the Conner girls ended up marrying, will be reworked or possibly not even acknowledged when the show hits the air. As for the plotline about Dan's death, more insight (and jokes) will come when the first episode of the new season airs on March 27. We're still skeptical about how the writers are going to make this plot hole work, but John Goodman told E! News he's satisfied with it.

"I thought it was a clever way to do it, handle it and get it out of the way," he said. Well, that works for us (for now).

Original story, published Dec. 27, 2017, 8:15 a.m. PT:

With revivals of nostalgic old TV shows still wildly popular, we're seeing a new trend emerge: completely ignoring everything that happened in a show's series finale for the sake of its revival. We saw it with Will & Grace, and now we're going to see it with Roseanne.

More: The Roseanne Cast May Have Gotten Older, but They Look Exactly the Same

Fans of the original Roseanne surely remember the 1997 series finale in which Dan (John Goodman's character) was tragically killed and then the family won the lottery. It was weird and kind of overdone, and honestly, the show is better off without it having happened, which is good news, because Dan is definitely alive and well in the revival even though we don't quite know how.

According to Us Weekly, the show is going to use Dan's death (and apparently his return from the dead) as a big joke in the pilot episode of the revival. In the promo, we get a little bit of a taste of how the new Roseanne is going to treat this whole situation with humor, but not a lot of details on how they plan to actually explain that the traumatic death of a beloved main character never happened.

First promo vid for the Revival of Roseanne w Dan alive

First promo vid for the Revival of Roseanne w Dan alive

In the promo, Dan is lamenting the current Chicago Bulls team and says, "I still think the Bulls of ’96-’97 would have beat these guys anytime."

Roseanne replies, "You can’t live in the past, Dan! When things are gone, they’re gone forever," and then lets out her signature laugh. It's a double-sided joke — both Dan and the series were presumably "gone forever" and both are now back.

The promos for the Roseanne revival are really leaning into Dan's return on the show, and he seems to be the focus of the majority of early promos for the revival. We may not know what to expect when it comes to the plot, but it sure is good to see how Dan and Roseanne are doing in their golden years.

Your Guide to Dating While Pregnant

First of all, listen up: Just because you’re knocked up doesn’t mean you can’t still play the field.

Some people date during pregnancy because they’re hoping to find the one with whom to raise said child. Others are just really horny. Whatever your motivation, bear in mind that having a baby puts an immense amount of pressure on even the most solid, well-established relationships. You’re dangerously tired, the baby cries and gets sick and cries again, and if you're like a lot of people, your sex drive completely vacates the building. The last thing you want to be dealing with on top of all that is the fallout of a breakup. So, unless you’re open to taking that risk — and starting a serious relationship during your pregnancy — it pays to be upfront from the very beginning that you're just looking for something casual.

I remember I wrote in my own Tinder profile, “7 months pregnant — solo mum by choice. Not looking for a co-parent, just looking for some fun before the baby arrives.” After all, there's no point in hiding the fact that you're pregnant (that would have been impossible for me anyway by the time I felt well enough to have sex), and I wanted to be clear from the beginning that I wasn’t open to sharing my baby.

More: I'm Glad I Went to an Orgy While Pregnant

If you're planning to date while you're pregnant, that's great. You will do fine and likely have a lot of fun. You just need to be wary of a few things.

Morning sickness is a total mood-killer

If you’re one of the lucky few who doesn’t get sick, you’ll be good to go from day one. Otherwise, get a Netflix subscription and a truckload of crackers, and batten down the hatches until you feel better.

Pregnancy fetishes do exist

There are plenty of people who are drawn to pregnant bodies. The only issue there is that you may run the risk of being fetishized — which, by the way, can be a hell of a lot of fun! But if you’re uneasy about that idea, stick to using headshots in your online dating profiles as a starting point to weed out the fetishists.

Your body changes & so do you

The things I used to like sex-wise weren’t the things I wanted at seven or eight months pregnant. A casual lover came to visit me once and leapt straight into doing things the way we’d done them six months earlier. Old Me had liked it hard and rough and fast; New Me apparently wanted slow and gentle. The date was a complete flop.

Sometimes your organs just don't behave

You get gassier for one thing. Right at the crucial moment during a one-night stand, I started farting and couldn’t stop. I had no choice but to grit my teeth and try to ignore it until it was all over. After that, my orgasm kick-started six hours of Braxton Hicks (false contractions). Needless to say, I barely slept all night.

Sleeping — literally — with someone isn't the same

Unbeknownst to me, I’d developed an epic snore during my pregnancy. I only discovered this when I was at a new lover’s house for a long weekend and woke up the first morning to discover she’d had to spend the night on the couch.

Kink gets complicated

If you like to walk on the wild side, you’ll need to do your research about safety and pregnant bodies. My first date after the morning sickness subsided was with a kinky butch on an interstate work trip. I couldn’t lie on my back for long because it made me dizzy. I couldn’t lie on my right side for long because it put pressure on my liver. I had to leap up midway through making out and shut all the doors because the smell from the kitchen was making me feel nauseous. My head always needed to be higher than my belly, I didn’t want to put my hands above my head, and I was so uncomfortable on a daily basis that I certainly didn’t want any more pain in my life, which canceled out the majority of her plans. The list of things I didn’t want her to do was so long, we ended up opting for good-old vanilla sex instead.

On another kinky interstate Tinder date, one I scored right before the cut-off for being too pregnant to fly anymore, I was better prepared. This date was into ropes and bondage, so she diligently spent an entire day reading and consulting doctors about safe ways to tie me up. The hardest thing was finding a position that was comfortable for me. I couldn’t be on my knees because my gigantic belly made me topple over. I couldn’t be upside down because of heartburn. I couldn’t stand for long because my feet ached, and lying down was such a complicated process involving pillows and bolsters that we ended up with me bound in a beautiful pattern of shibari knots while sitting comfortably on a kitchen chair.

Be very, very careful in the final trimester

I don’t mean with sex — as long as you’re safe, you can keep doing that right up to the end (or even during labor, as many do for pain relief!). But no, I mean careful with your emotions. Your hormones are running high at this point. In my final weeks, I somehow got it into my head that I wanted to get back together with my ex (we’d split up years ago, but we're now good friends). So what did I do? I asked her to be there with me at the birth. I cried when I imagined us exhausted, all covered in blood and sweat and holding a newborn baby together. She was in a committed relationship at the time and was completely unavailable, but I was swept up in a hormonal romantic fantasy, and if I’m honest, I was also a little scared. I was on the brink of something huge, and the idea of having someone I loved holding my hand was comforting. In the end, the birth was a complete catastrophe, and in the chaos, I didn’t even consider calling her in.

More: Do Pregnancy "Rules" Really Matter?

I did manage to have a lot of fun dating while pregnant — and a lot of pleasure too. So if you're a single mom-to-be, whether by choice, accident or providence, don’t be scared to give it a go. Just try to be clear with yourself (as well as any interested parties) about exactly what it is you’re looking for.

After all, once the baby has arrived, you’re going to have so little time for — or likely interest in — dating. So, as Janis Joplin once said, you may as well "get it while you can."

Olivia Wilde Had the Worst Birthday Ever

Can someone please go and check on Olivia Wilde? I think she might be seriously hurting right now and understandably so. Wilde had one of the worst birthdays ever (I'm guessing, although I doubt I'm too far off the mark) when she announced over the weekend that she had lost her beloved dog, Paco, on her 34th birthday. As a dog mom and a human with feelings, this hits me right in the feels. I can't even imagine what Wilde is going through right now.

The feelings were so, so real over on Instagram on Sunday when Wilde posted memories of her and Paco with an in-memoriam caption. "Lost my best friend last night," she wrote. "Paco was a kind, wise, gentle, loving soul. I could post a thousand photos of so many adventures. These pics remind me of how peaceful he made me. My heart feels broken right now. All I can ask is that you consider adopting a pup, and loving them with all you’ve got. Here’s to all the incredible friends of Paco who’ve been so kind to him over the years. I am forever grateful." Can someone please pass me a tissue? I'm welling up over here!

Wilde's photo set shows happier times with Paco, snuggling and hanging out like any good dog mom and dog son would do. It's clear Wilde's bond with Paco knew no bounds and that losing him is going to take a long time to process. What's not clear is how Paco died, not that it really matters; losing a beloved pet is never, ever easy.

MoreCan We Please Not Shame Olivia Wilde for Kissing Her Son?

Just a short while before this unexpected loss, Wilde had posted a happier photo of her and her sweet family — actor Jason Sudeikis and her children, Otis, 3, and Daisy, 1 — hanging out in their comfy clothes and having some precious family time.

"What could I possibly ask for on this 34th birthday? Just endless health and happiness for these magical maniacs. Thank you thank you thank you, a million times, thank you," she wrote as a caption to the very adorable photo.

Here's How to Cook Lobsters in the Most Humane Way Possible

How do you cook lobster?

For a long time, we all subscribed to the same lobster-cooking method. You know the one: tossing live lobsters into piping-hot boiling water.

Mrs. Doubtfire lobster GIF

Well, forget everything you once knew about cooking lobsters. With growing evidence that lobsters can in fact feel pain, people are adopting more humane methods. More specifically, those in Switzerland are so serious about changing their ways they effectively banned the boiling water method in January 2018 and ruled that lobsters must be stunned before boiling, with the ruling taking effect in March 2018.

More: How to Clean a Burned Pot With Supplies You Already Have

According to PETA, lobsters have a sophisticated nervous system. Invertebrate zoologist Jaren G. Horsley tells them, "The lobster does not have an automatic nervous system that puts it into a state of shock when it is harmed. It probably feels itself being cut… As an invertebrate zoologist who has studied crustaceans for a number of years, I can tell you the lobster has a rather sophisticated nervous system that, among other things, allows it to sense actions that will cause it harm. [Lobsters] can, I am sure, sense pain."

So, what’s the most humane way to kill a lobster?

First, let's define humane slaughter. According to the Humane Slaughter Association, it is as follows: "As with mammals, a humane slaughter is one that results in an immediate loss of consciousness, or if slow-acting, induces unconsciousness without discomfort or pain. This unconsciousness should persist until death intervenes."

Once the new rule takes effect, only electric shock or the "mechanical destruction" of the lobster's brain will be accepted methods of stunning the animals, according to Swiss public broadcaster Radio Télévision Suisse and the Humane Slaughter Association. Once you stun the lobster, it's recommended you kill it immediately.

If you want to humanely cook your lobster at home, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Australia has created step-by-step instructions that can be found here.

Another option is using the aquatic fish anesthetic AQUI-S. According to studies, this kills lobsters without causing pain or distress.

With so many options for humane ways to cook a lobster, it seems crazy to keep utilizing such a cruel cooking method. Let's hope other countries follow in Switzerland's footsteps and ban the inhumane act of boiling live lobsters.

One fun thing about hosting Easter brunch is decorating with the pastels and spring details we've been deprived of all winter. While the bright hues and prints alone will make your table pop, here's how you can take it up a notch this year: with Easter bunny napkins.

Bunny napkins

They may look complicated, but trust us; they're very easy to do. Taking just a few quick steps, we'll show you how to fold your own bunny napkins to sweeten up your Easter place settings.

First off, you'll need cotton or linen square napkins. Pro tip: The folding is easier with thin napkins rather than thick ones. The color is up to you, though! You can use white, pink or any color napkins you like. Since our Easter table decor is yellow and pink, we used yellow napkins.

What to Do if You & Your Partner Don't Agree on Having Kids

$

You’re in love. Maybe it’s a fresh relationship and you’re still getting to know each other. Maybe it’s been a while but your partner still gives you butterflies. And then one day, you’re chatting and it hits you: You and your partner totally don’t agree on having kids.

How did this happen? It could be a lot of things, Toni Coleman, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker in McLean, Virginia, tells SheKnows. Perhaps you were making assumptions about your partner’s desires for children. Perhaps your partner was being indirect and saying things like, “Maybe someday,” when they meant “Probably never.”

Before long, the discussion can build to a full-blown argument, leaving both parties unsure of what to do or how to talk to each other. This is what happened to Kathy, an editor and blogger at My Dishwasher’s Possessed, and her husband. “My husband wasn't sure he wanted children,” Kathy tells SheKnows. She knew this going into their marriage. “He wasn't definite, but he just didn't know if he could give himself completely over to parenthood.”

Having kids — or not having them — is no small topic, Coleman says. It brings up all kinds of painful and real issues. “It’s kind of like each person’s idea of what their future would look like… where they come from and the families they grew up in or the things they were exposed to, what they thought their life would always be like,” Coleman says. “It speaks to lifestyle a lot but also deep values and just a lot of deep feelings.”

More: How Do Couples Really Decide if It’s the Right Time to Have Kids?

Not being sure or being certain you don’t want kids isn’t rare in younger people, and Coleman says it seems to be coming up particularly in millennials. “They’re saying, ‘I want to be freer,’” she says. “‘I’ve seen what my parents went through and how expensive it is to live and how much it costs to have a house, and I just don’t see myself ever wanting to take on that level of responsibility.’”

Kathy knew she wanted children, but she also loved her husband and decided to try to live in the limbo of not knowing whether or not they would try for children while he figured it out. It didn’t go so well. “As it turned out, I'm really bad living in limbo,” she says.

As she approached 30, Kathy found herself needing an answer. They were arguing a lot, and in one argument, her husband told her flat out: "I don’t want kids."

“Once he said no kids, then we really had to deal with the issues in the marriage."

More: The Best Apps for Wedding Planning

But really, facing these issues head-on is the only way through them. The goal isn’t to change your partner’s mind, but to listen to what matters to them and try to understand. That can be hard to do. It’s when couples are stuck trying to have these real conversations that they often show up in therapy, Coleman says. “Once they really fully get where the other one is coming from and how important it is to them, then they can look for compromise,” she says.

If they really hear their partner, they can start to understand whether their disagreement is a timing issue — does their partner just not want children now — or if it’s a long-term issue and whether, ultimately, there’s any room for compromise.

Compromise can look like a lot of things, Coleman says, like realizing your partner is OK with one child but not the three you’d hoped for or deciding you’d rather have the life with your partner than a life with a child.

But use caution, Coleman says, when coming to a compromise if you’re not totally sure your partner is authentically on board. A partner who has a child when they didn’t really want one can cause a lot of resentment, and a partner who agrees not to have children can end up feeling an incredible amount of emptiness. “It can really erode the good stuff in the relationships,” Coleman says.

More: 6 Couples Share How They Make an Open Relationship Work

As for Kathy and her husband, they put a moratorium on talking about a baby for six months, and Kathy went to therapy as they worked on their communication and relationship. They agreed to start with a cat, loved it, and her husband started being able to see himself as a father. After several miscarriages and fertility treatments, they eventually started their family. “Once we had our son Joe, [my husband] just fell in love with him and parenting. He couldn't wait to have more,” Kathy says. They now have three teenagers and are celebrating their 25th anniversary this March. “I think the issues we had in the beginning really helped us build a strong relationship.”

Easter Egg Hunt Ideas You Haven't Tried Before

If you're celebrating Easter, you're likely doing one or all of the following: dyeing eggs, gifting Easter baskets to cute kids and/or embarking on a traditional Easter egg hunt. The kids in your life likely love all three activities, but we're pretty sure the entire family has the most fun with the egg hunt. But there are only so many years in a row kids can search for plastic eggs before it starts to get old, right?

It's time to get a little creative. How about incorporating some Easter bunny tracks? What about breaking the family up into teams and working together to solve puzzles? We've rounded up 11 Easter egg hunt ideas that aren't a snooze — and work for kids of all ages. Win-win.

More: 25 Easter Basket Ideas for Kids of All Ages

1. Easter bunny tracks

A full-blown Easter egg hunt guided by the Easter Bunny himself? Surely there could be nothing more adorable. Kids will love waking up on Easter morning to find that the Easter Bunny has left them a personalized note and a few bunny tracks pointing them in the direction of the hidden eggs. These cute printables make setting up the bunny-track hunt a breeze.

2. Easter egg garden

If they're too little to hunt well in the yard, you can make your own Easter egg garden that “grows” eggs instead. Placing candy-filled Easter egg flowers in the grass or sand will make it easy for even the littlest ones to find their treats.

3. Indoor egg hunt

If you live in a part of the country where spring hasn’t sprung yet, hope is not lost. You can turn a cold or rainy Easter day into an adventure when you tell your kids they’re going to hunt for all their eggs and Easter trinkets inside the house. To make the indoor egg hunt even more unique, try hiding the eggs in a trail or with clues leading to one giant Easter basket.

4. Golden egg hunt

Little pirates will get a kick out of this Easter egg treasure hunt. After all, who can resist buried treasure? Especially if that means a one-of-a-kind golden egg left behind by the Easter Bunny. Bonus points for putting some booty inside.

5. Letter hunt

Learning can be fun, right? Younger kids who are just figuring out how to spell and read will enjoy hunting for Easter eggs that each contain a letter to spell out a hidden message. Kids can work together to find the letter-filled eggs and put together an Easter message ("Some bunny loves you!") to earn a prize.

6. Easter egg decoder

This is a great one for a larger group since kids will need to be put into teams. Teams of three or four can hunt to find as many mismatched eggs (where different-colored halves of plastic eggs have been put together) as they can. Once the eggs have been found, teams can take apart and reassemble the matching halves of the eggs. The first team to “unscramble” all their mismatched eggs gets a big Easter basket filled with candy or other treats.

7. Kid-guided hunt

Any kid who loves to pull a fast one on their parents will be thrilled to be in charge of an Easter egg hunt. Ask your kids to hide a basket of eggs around the yard — then, you have to find them. As for any eggs you don't find within a certain time limit — say, 10 minutes? The kids get to keep those for themselves.

8. Scavenger list

This one's for elementary school-age and older kids who are looking for a little challenge: Make over your traditional Easter egg hunt using a scavenger hunt checklist. You can task kids with finding a variety of different objects hidden around the yard (like four blue eggs, six yellow eggs, two chocolate eggs and a chocolate Easter bunny) before time is up.

9. Active scavenger hunt

Kids have a lot of energy to burn; this much we know is true. So, if your kids have been begging for Easter candy all day long, why not make them work for it? Hide sports-themed Easter eggs that contain an active instruction along with a candy treat. Kids then have to do 10 jumping jacks or run a lap around the yard before they can move on to the candy in the next egg. Bonus: They'll probably sleep very well after this one.

10. Glow-in-the-dark hunt

This one might require a little patience, but it's worth the wait. If you can get your kids to hold off on their Easter candy extravaganza for most of the day, reward them with a hunt to find glow-in-the-dark eggs.

11. Easter egg piñata

Or how about you forgo the logistics of an egg hunt altogether and just hit some stuff with a stick? Buying an adorable Easter egg piñata (or making your own) is ideal for smaller kids who may not understand how to hunt for eggs yet as well as older kids who just want to do something different this year. To make things even more interesting, try your hand at mini piñatas so you can make a special candy-filled creation for each kid (to destroy).

‘Is the Easter Bunny Real?’ Here's How to Answer

$
0
0

Just when you thought you had successfully kept the whole Santa myth alive, spring rolls around — and yet another loaded kid question is staring you in the face. "Mom, is the Easter Bunny real?"

First of all, try to remain calm. Then, go through some of these parenting pro tips.

Of course, you don't have to follow these to the letter; you know your kid better than anyone else, after all. But if you feel the skepticism a-coming, this serves as a guide to prep yourself — because if you're going to be dealing with some disillusionment, you'd best not be tongue-tied.

More: 25 Easter Basket Ideas for Kids of All Ages

Don't make it about you

Sure, sometimes it's tough to see your child growing up. And the big Easter Bunny question — or the Santa question, the tooth fairy question, etc. — definitely signals a transition. But letting your judgment be clouded by wanting your little one to stay, well, little, can get in the way of the bigger picture. If your instinct is to tell your child, "Yes, the bunny is real," because you don't want her to grow up, take a step back and think about this. She can't stay young forever, and these moments are opportunities for you to help your children take steps toward adolescence in an honest way. And speaking of honest...

Honesty is the best policy

Your instinct might be to keep the belief alive — at least for another year, right? Well, if your child is asking, they've probably already heard something from kids at school and are just seeking you out to verify the news. If you insist that the bunny is real, you're just temporarily postponing the inevitable. More important, this is possibly a test. You've likely spent hours lecturing your kid about always telling the truth, and now they are giving you the chance to do the same.

But sure, a white lie is OK sometimes

If your child isn't quite ready to find out the cold, hard truth about our furry friend, you'll likely be able to tell. For example, they may angle the question, asking, "Someone said the Easter Bunny isn't real, but that's wrong, right, Mom?" Often, this will be their first "check in" about something they still want to believe in. And if your instinct is that your child doesn't really want the news, you can feel OK about letting them keep believing for awhile. When your child is ready for the facts, you'll likely be able to tell; they'll ask directly and persistently.

More: Easter Egg Hunt Ideas You Haven't Tried Before

Soften the blow

If you have younger children who still believe, invite the older child into the "adult club." Tell her she's now part of keeping the Easter Bunny secret for her younger siblings. Reinforce how important this is for younger kids, and that it's a big responsibility for her. This will help her manage her feelings about the news she's just heard. She'll feel excited to be part of the joy of keeping the magic alive for others.

Trust your gut

If you're not sure whether it's time to reveal the news, don't Google, don't ask around — just trust yourself. You'll know when it's time and what needs to be said. Remember: There isn't an adult on the planet who still believes, so obviously, we all had to find out at some point. And we all survived.

Cameron Diaz's Relationship Status With Acting Is Complicated Right Now

Where were you when the reports first broke that Cameron Diaz was done with acting? Luckily, I was at home and able to flop onto my couch and sigh wistfully. The thought of no new Diaz material was a little too distressing for a Monday, to be perfectly honest with you. But then, just a couple hours later, it seemed like it was all just a silly rumor and that Diaz wasn't actually retired and we'd all somehow missed the memo. But even after this whirlwind of confusion had settled, it still feels like more answers are needed about what Diaz is actually up to these days and why she isn't jumping into any new projects.

More: Source Says Cameron Diaz & Benji Madden Are Trying Everything to Have a Baby

Let's back up a bit for those who might have missed the entire story. On Monday afternoon, news emerged that Selma Blair, who once starred in The Sweetest Thing with and remains close to Diaz, casually noted in an interview with Metro News that she'd seen Diaz at a lunch date recently and that — get this — Diaz had made it clear she was done with acting.

Cameron Diaz Bad Teacher Stupid GIF

"I had lunch with Cameron the other day, we were reminiscing about [The Sweetest Thing]," Blair noted. "I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron’s retired from acting, she’s like, ‘I’m done.’ I mean, she doesn’t need to make any more films, she has a pretty great life, I don’t know what it would take to bring her back. She’s happy."

More: Benji Madden Makes Public Vow Never to Leave Cameron Diaz

But it now seems like it was all a joke on Blair's part and that everyone got their britches in a twist (way to make that clear, sis). By Monday evening, she was forced to circle back on those comments — especially because Diaz maintained her silence during this entire kerfuffle — and set the record straight. "BREAKING NEWS. Guys please, I was making a joke in an interview. CAMERON DIAZ is NOT retiring from ANYTHING. And for more breaking news: I am NOW retiring from being Cameron Diaz’s spokesperson," she tweeted out, attempting to dispel any worry than Diaz was forever done with acting.

Diaz Acting Blair Tweet

Diaz Acting Blair Tweet

Even though Blair was joking about Diaz basically being retired from acting, there might actually be some truth to the matter. Diaz hasn't appeared in a movie since 2014 when she starred in two commercially unsuccessful films, Sex Tape and Annie; 4 years is a long hiatus in showbiz, y'all. Combine that possible hesitation to hop back into acting after getting burned pretty hard by movie audiences with the fact that she's super in love with her husband, musician Benji Madden, and wants to have a family with him and it's easy to see why all this fuss about Diaz's possible retirement took off so quickly.

More: Cameron Diaz's Marriage to Benji Madden Actually Sounds Perfect

For now, Diaz seems content just staying in her personal bubble and doing her own thing. While she hasn't made any recent statements about if or when she'll return to the spotlight (in fact, she's kept a pretty low profile for a while now), she did say something pretty indicative of her current headspace about a year ago at a Goop Wellness Summit event.

Cameron Diaz Peace Quiet GIF

"I just went, 'I can't really say who I am to myself.' Which is a hard thing to face up to," Diaz remarked during a panel discussion. "I felt the need to make myself whole." Taking a step back after a whirlwind career spanning the better part of two decades might be just what the doctor ordered in Diaz's case. As for us, we'll just have to patiently wait, let Diaz do her thing and hope she isn't really done with acting because that would just be too much to deal with.

Should I Be Worried About Osteoporosis?

While you may think osteoporosis is uncommon or you don't need to worry about it if you're under 50, think again — it's unfortunately a fairly common disease and it's crucial to start taking care of your bones, like, yesterday. However, there is good news: It's never too late to work on your bone health. Here's how.

What is osteoporosis, anyway?

Simply put, osteoporosis is a disease of the bone. It happens when your body loses too much bone, doesn't make enough bone or in some cases both. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, healthy bone, when viewed under a microscope, looks like honeycomb, but in bones with osteoporosis, the holes and spaces in that honeycomb are far larger. This means the bone is less dense and more likely to fracture, which is a serious problem for those afflicted.

For females, further details are pretty depressing. "Twice as many women have bone fractures from osteoporosis as men because women are often smaller, have less bone mass to begin with and tend to live longer," says Dr. Neel Anand, professor of orthopedic surgery and director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai Spine Center in Los Angeles. Additionally, he says far more women than men deal with it in the first place (8 million women to 2 million men), so the odds are definitely not stacked in the favor of the gals.

How can osteoporosis be prevented?

Anand notes that osteoporosis should not be thought of as a normal part of the aging process in humans. "Rather, it is an irreversible and degenerative disease that results in bone loss over time," he explains. It's better to start working on preventative measures in one's youth (yes, we're talking to you, Generation Z!), but he emphasizes that it's never too late to think about the possibility of osteoporosis and to work on preventing it in the first place.

Here are a few key points that can help you prevent osteoporosis at any age:

A well-balanced diet

It seems that eating well can help prevent a whole host of issues, such as obesity, heart problems, diabetes and so on. It turns out it can also positively impact your bone health.

"Unfortunately, the American diet falls far short of the recommended daily values of calcium and vitamin D, both essential for strong bone health and density," Anand explains. "Your diet must be well-balanced with an abundance of green leafy vegetables and fruit. Dairy sources such as milk, yogurt and cheese are sources high in calcium, while vitamin D quantities are typically highest in sources of wild-caught fatty fish like salmon and tuna." Also, you'll want to avoid high-salt foods and keep your coffee intake to three cups a day or less, as both can interfere with calcium absorption.

Exercise

Again, exercise is another factor in preventative health care than can help you avoid medical issues down the road. Interestingly enough, it's a crucial component of bone health, although you might find that fact surprising. For osteoporosis prevention, it's important to partake in both weight-bearing exercises (such as hiking, stair climbing, fast walking and aerobics) as well as muscle-building exercises (such as lifting weights, using elastic exercise bands and lifting your own body weight).

"The key is to engage in exercise that is enjoyable so that you will be more likely to stick with it on a regular basis," says Anand. "Aim for at least three sessions a week if you're just starting out, with the goal of building up to five."

Avoid alcohol & smoking

Additionally, smoking and alcohol can have negative effects on the health of your bones. Experts recommend no more than two or three drinks per day and to abstain completely from cigarettes. "The chemicals in cigarettes have been widely studied as a significant contributor to bone loss, as does heavy alcohol consumption," Anand explains, adding that you should talk to your doctor about smoking cessation programs if you're having trouble quitting.

Boost those bones

While osteoporosis can be a problem in people over 50, taking care of your bones is something that needs to start ASAP, whether you're 25 or 75. Keep your nutrition on the level, work more exercise into your life and avoid a few no-nos, and you're already well on the way to preventing what can be a life-impacting disease.

American Idol is back, baby, and to the relief of many, it's actually just as good as we remember. To be fair, American Idol wasn't off the air that long; just two years in fact. It's hardly long enough to deem this a reboot, but here we are calling it that. Now, in its rebooted form and on a new network (hello, ABC!), American Idol seems poised to once again dominate our television screens and attempt to steal some of its singing competition shine back from its contemporary peers of similar formats, The Voice and The Four.

There's been a lot of curiosity about how the new version of American Idol would play out. Would there be the combined spiciness and chill of its most formative seasons, when judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson reigned supreme? Would there be a focus on the more cringeworthy auditions that the show put in the spotlight back in the day? Or would this just be a show about the good, wholesome fun that can come from watching people trying to make their dreams of music stardom come true?

Basically, it's a nostalgia trip of the highest order, and people are here for it and reacting to it in the most vocal manner possible: on Twitter.

So, let's check out some of the best Twitter reactions, shall we? From the funniest to the warmest, these positive American Idol reactions will leave you glowing — and maybe clearing a spot in your DVR queue for new American Idol episodes.
