Is It Time for Elementary Schools to Stop Celebrating Valentine's Day?

$

When my kids were in elementary school, they enjoyed celebrating Valentine's Day — or, let's be real, any holiday — with their class. They decorated mailboxes and wrote out cards to give to each of their classmates. And on Valentine’s Day, there would be a party at school so they could distribute their cards, play games and eat treats. All three of my kids looked forward to these days.

But now, more and more schools are choosing to eliminate Valentine’s Day celebrations. The reasons vary, but many schools cite the need to remove religious holiday celebrations from school, the limited class time available for parties due to increased curriculum demands and also the ever-growing list of allergies/dietary issues that make it seemingly impossible to safely and fairly serve treats to everyone in class.

Is there a place for Valentine’s Day in today’s classrooms? Professional opinions are mixed. Dr. Maurice Elias, professor of psychology at Rutgers University, says, “Valentine's Day is linked with romantic love — this just does not have a place in the school, nor should it be ‘mandated’ in any way.”

But Dr. Michele Borba, author of the book Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World, disagrees and says, “Valentine’s Day is a cherished childhood tradition and should be celebrated in elementary schools.”

Redefining Valentine’s Day

Premade Valentine’s Day cards that have sayings such as, “Be mine” or “I Love You” do seem disingenuous and inappropriate for young children to give to their classmates. Says Borba, “A valentine that says ‘love’ is not appropriate in elementary school, but one that says ‘like’ is.” It may be better to have children design their own cards with more friend-centric messages. Borba says, “Making cards at home provides a great opportunity for an adult to briefly describe the difference between 'love' and 'like.' Parents also need to take time discuss the types of comments children can write in their cards to each other — and never assume they have that knowledge.”

Perhaps what schools should do is redefine Valentine’s Day to make it more appropriate for school-age children. Elias suggests, “Educators could use Valentine’s Day to create a day of appreciation. The focus for the school day would be showing gratitude and appreciation rather than the love/favorite implication of Valentine's Day.” With that simple readjusting of the day's mission, teachers could encourage kids to use Valentine’s Day to communicate what they really appreciate about each of their classmates.

For example, when my children were young, one of the school traditions they really enjoyed was being “star student” of the week. This included a ritual in which all the kids gave compliments to the honoree; the teacher would write those affirmations on a piece of paper for the child to keep. These genuine expressions of kindness from peers really made each of my children feel special and valued.

Participation optional, inclusion mandatory

First, if Valentine’s Day is celebrated in class, it’s important that participation be optional. No child should be forced to give or receive cards if it makes them feel uncomfortable. But if a child does decide to distribute cards, they need to be prepared to give one to every classmate who is comfortable receiving one.

“The foundation of a caring learning climate is an inclusive environment where every child feels welcomed," Borba explains. "Not receiving a valentine — if everyone else receives one — can be upsetting and humiliating to a child left out.” If a kid feels awkward about making valentines for everyone in class, they should be able to opt out of the activity entirely. Or, Borba suggests, they could be allowed the option of delivering their notes anonymously. Of course, if a child doesn't want to give a valentine to another child for a serious reason — that child has bullied them, for example — it's an issue that needs to be dealt with using the parents' and teacher's best judgment (and, again, an issue that would be avoided were schools to cease celebrating Valentine's Day altogether).

Elias believes that an inclusion-first Valentine's Day might also help kids extend that attitude beyond the classroom. “If Valentine’s Day is used as day of appreciation," he explains, "it can be an opportunity for students to show appreciation to support staff — secretarial, janitorial, security, kitchen, grounds crew, transportation. It would also highlight for the students just how many people it takes for the school to run well.”

Using Valentine’s Day to promote change

Whether or not schools choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, teachers and school officials need to provide continuous interpersonal instruction throughout the year. “It is important that schools have sound social-emotional and character-development curricula," Elias says, "including proper and respectful ways to speak to and treat one another, regardless of gender or other characteristics.”

A July 2017 post by Susan Swearer on StopBullying.gov highlights the impact acts of kindness can have on the prevention of bullying in schools. Swearer writes, “Is it possible to create homes, schools, and communities where kindness is the norm? The answer is yes — but to make this imagined world a reality, we need to teach, model, and reward kindness.”

Borba agrees with this observation and says, “Children don’t learn how to be kind from reading about it in a textbook, but from doing kind deeds. It’s why we should encourage children to extend greetings, write thank-you notes or send a valentine — not as a love message, but as a gesture to let the recipient know they care.”

More: The Cutest (& Easiest) Valentine's Day Crafts for Kids

While schools should be promoting kindness all year long, Elias says that for young kid, "having a designated special day brings greater attention to this essential aspect of interpersonal relationships.” Valentine’s Day is a perfect opportunity to teach kindness, pure and simple.

So forget the love notes and sugary treats and instead share sweet sentiments. Because as Borba notes, "simple, reciprocal gestures also help kids learn one of life’s greatest lessons: that genuine kindness can make a difference in the world.”

Well, it's all over, folks. You made it through the never-to-be-repeated roller-coaster ride that was Kylie Jenner's first pregnancy. And what a time it was.

First, the rumors began swirling. Is the baby Travis Scott's or Tyga's? Or better yet, is Jenner Kim Kardashian West's surrogate?! Then there was the mysterious case of the bumpless Kardashian-Jenner holiday card photos and the Wendy Williams Kylie Jenner-shaming saga. And don't forget the Kylie Jenner, mommy blogger, conspiracy theory. Even some scientists got in on the action to analyze the sociology of the family's simultaneous sister pregnancies.

But now, we can finally put all the rumors to rest, because Kylie Jenner welcomed her baby daughter this week and has since shared the little gal's first (adorable hand-grasp) photo as well as her (X-Men-inspired) name: Stormi.

Yep, that's right. Despite all the recent — totally out-there and off-base, mind you — baby name guesses from the fan masses (Butterfly? Monarch? Mariposa? Crop Top or Culotte??), we have sweet little Stormi joining the cousin ranks of Reign, North, Dream, Chicago, et al. And boy, oh boy does Twitter have jokes.

We have a feeling the Kardashian-Jenner baby name weather forecast memes have only just begun, but our favorite has to be the first true pioneer to fit them all in: "I had a DREAM last night that my SAINT of a friend PENELOPE was holding out a MASON jar catching REIGN coming from the NORTH WEST side of CHICAGO. Guess it was a STORMI night..."

Nastia Liukin Opens Up About Body-Shaming & Being Perceived as ‘Bitchy’

When Nastia Liukin retired from gymnastics in 2012, she gained 25 pounds. Once known as a “petite blond gymnast” who backflipped and handsprung her way to five Olympic medals in 2008, Liukin was suddenly bombarded with comments calling her fat and scrutinizing her body.

“People remembered me as this petite blond gymnast in a leotard, and then I go through the normal body changes and people are like, ‘Oh, my God. You’re so fat,’” Liukin told StyleCaster at SheKnows Media’s BlogHer18 Health conference on Jan. 31. “It’s like, ‘Actually, I’m not fat.’ Yes. I gained some weight. But my body is going through this change. Everyone goes through that. I guess not everyone goes through it in the public eye.”

Nastia Liukin Opens Up About Body-Shaming | SheKnows

To cope, Liukin stocked her closet with baggy clothes, holed up in her apartment in New York City and declined invitations to events in fear of being seen. “I had almost this identity crisis,” Liukin says. “I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know what to wear. Nothing fit me. I tried to wear really baggy clothes to hide that. I lost all my self-confidence. I didn’t want to go anywhere. I didn’t want to go to events or to dinner or do anything because I was so insecure with myself and my body because of what other people were saying.”

Though Liukin worked out all the time, she didn’t see much progress. It wasn’t until she accepted that her body would never be what it was when she was training for the Olympics and learned to exercise for her health rather than to lose weight that she noticed a change.

“I knew I needed to take time for my body to go through that. I was working out all the time, but nothing was happening, and at a certain point, it’s OK,” Liukin says. “More recently, I’ve realized that if I want dessert, if I want a cookie, I’m going to have it and not deprive myself because I don’t want my jeans to be too tight.”

However, the body-shaming didn’t stop when Liukin lost weight. Now, she faces a new set of critics who accuse her of looking too thin, a comment that she admits hurts but doesn’t surprise her. “No matter what, you’re still being body-shamed,” Liukin says. “On my Instagram yesterday, someone was like, ‘Jeez. When are you going to start eating again?’ It’s like, ‘Trust me. I eat just fine.’ I am healthy. That’s frustrating. It can put you down. It hurts the same, whether it’s one way or another. No matter what, you’re never going to be what people want.”

As a woman in sports, Liukin is used to being criticized for her appearance, especially after spending years in the public eye, where she was picked apart for everything from her hair to her makeup to her body — essentially, everything but her actual gymnastics.

“I can’t remember the last time, to my knowledge, that a male athlete was criticized for his hair,” Liukin says. “It’s like, ‘You’re watching it because you love the sport. So focus on the incredible routine that they’re doing instead of on their hair or their makeup.’ At the end of the day, we’re competing in the Olympics because of our gymnastic abilities. We’re not competing for our looks. We’re not in a beauty pageant. We’re representing our country at the Olympics.”

The double standard continues for women who are seen as “bitchy” because of their competitiveness. For years, Liukin saw her name associated with words like icy and bitchy for the stoic, intense expression she had every time she did gymnastics — something she didn’t see happening to men who were equally as competitive in their sport.

“When a lot of men compete, they can be serious, but that’s not perceived as being bitchy or having a bitch face. For a female, it is,” Liukin says. “It was hard for me when I was younger because people were like, ‘Oh my God. She seems like a bitch.’ I was like, ‘No. I’m really not. I’m just focused.’”

Though Liukin is a huge fan of social media, as one of BlogHer18 Health’s panelists on the power of visual storytelling on social media, she admits the platform amplifies negativity.

“I tell myself, ‘OK. I’m not going to think about what people are saying. I’m going to delete comments,’” Liukin says. “Then you see one and you get deflated. You can be so positive, and one comment can make you feel defeated. That’s why it’s important to stay true to yourself, because you also don’t know these people. I’ve never met 95 percent of my followers. That’s awesome that they’re following me, but at the same time, why am I letting them affect how I feel?”

Nastia Liukin IG 2

After growing up in the public eye, starting with her first Gymnastics World Championship when she was 15, Liukin has learned some lessons on dealing with insecurities and self-doubt.

“It’s important to be happy from within,” Liukin says. “Don’t focus on what other people want you to look like or to be or to work on or to say. If I’m happy with my body, and I know that I’m healthy, I need to stop worrying about everybody else. Happiness is strength.”

Reese Witherspoon Opens Up About the Abusive Relationship That Changed Her Life

It was a revelation that many might not have seen coming during another edition of Oprah Winfrey's Super Soul Sunday series on OWN, but it was one that deeply enlightening. When Winfrey's A Wrinkle in Time costars, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, sat down with the pop culture icon, one of Winfrey's questions for the women prompted Witherspoon to reveal that she had been in an abusive relationship in the past that had fundamentally changed her. It was a reveal so casually noted yet, upon further prodding from Winfrey, Witherspoon was able to open up about the relationship that played an integral role in propelling her down the career and life path she is on now.

When asked by Winfrey about the "most difficult decision [she has] ever had to make in order to fulfill [her] destiny," Witherspoon took a moment before replying, "For me, probably leaving an abusive relationship." And while she never names the person who she says abused her psychologically and verbally (although there's a chance she could be referencing the toxic working relationship she had with a director when she was 16 years old), nor do we know what kind of relationship she had with the person, we do know that it happened when she was much younger.

When pressed for a deeper explanation, Witherspoon told Winfrey and Kaling what led to her leaving that relationship. "A line got drawn in the sand and it got crossed, and my brain just switched and I knew it was going to be very difficult but I just couldn't go any further."

Witherspoon went on to say that that relationship and leaving that relationship fundamentally changed her, especially when it came to putting away negative thoughts about herself. "I could never be the person I am today," she stated. "It changed who I was on a cellular level, the fact that I stood up for myself. None of those leaving those situations ...it's wrought with self-doubt, particularly if someone damages your self-esteem."

She went on to say that these days, people who knew her back then up until today notice she has become an entirely different person. "People say to me that knew me then, 'You're a completely different person.' I didn't have self-esteem. I'm a different person now and it's part of why I can stand up and say, 'yes, I'm ambitious' -- because someone tried to take that from me before."

Witherspoon went on to connect how this relationship not only changed her on a cellular level, implying in her statements that leaving that abusive relationship allowed her to love herself and gain confidence, but that this relationship gave her an unfortunate bond with so many women in Hollywood, including her Big Little Lies costars. "There wasn't a woman there that hadn't been affected by abuse," she noted.

What matters now is that Witherspoon is safely away from her abuser and, from the looks of her social media these days, she is not only married to a man who loves and supports her, but has a happy and healthy life as well. That's what matters most.

Now That We Know How Jack Dies, This Is Us Is Fast-Forwarding Things

With one of it's most central mysteries finally solved, This Is Us is going back to the drawing board in a sense as it figures out ways to keep the drama and mystery of the show alive. Not that fans would stop watching without a mystery (because the lives of the Pearsons are way too interesting as is), but it never hurts to spice things up a little bit, right?

More: This Is Us Finally Told Us How Jack Died, & We're Not OK

That's why things got very interesting when This Is Us fast-forwarded during Sunday's post-Super Bowl LII episode to reveal an older Randall and Tess. After Randall mentioned to Kevin in an earlier episode he was having trouble seeing himself as an old man, we actually got to confirm that Randall does live to be an old man, and he's closer than ever to his daughter, Tess. It's this glimpse into the future that suddenly throws the patented This Is Us playbook out the window and makes us wonder: Will This Is Us be fast-forwarding again anytime soon? Will this become a regular occurrence?

TIU Fast Forward Scene

TIU Fast Forward Scene

You've gotta admit the prospect is pretty exciting, and thankfully, we have the answer to those previous questions already. Yes, This Is Us will fast-forward again, and while it sounds like it will just be fast-forwarding for Randall for now, that doesn't mean we won't see future Kevin and Kate.

More: Jack's Death Isn't the Only Mystery on This Is Us

While speaking with Deadline after this big Super Bowl episode, creator Dan Fogelman made it clear that fast-forwarding is part of a bigger This Is Us storytelling plan. "We show a new timeline, in the future, which is extremely exciting for a show that plays in time and has till-now played in the past/present," he explained. "But there is other stuff coming, too… there is a plan for the show, there always has been, we aren't just shooting from the hip. [...] After Tuesday [Feb. 6] we only have three episodes left this season, and we still have a lot to resolve here first, but it's safe to say the future can play a big part in seasons to come." OK, you can officially count me all the way in for more older Randall, and I won't lie, I'm curious to see what's in the future for older Kate and older Kevin.

TIU Old Randall Tweet

TIU Old Randall Tweet

And there's a chance fast-forwarding might not be the only time travel-related trick up the This Is Us writers' sleeves. In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Milo Ventimiglia read out fan tweets and tried to answer as best he could without getting too spoilery, and there was one fan tweet in particular that seemed pretty darn interesting. While reading aloud a fan tweet wondering whether there would be an alternate timeline when Jack gets to be a cute grandpa hanging out with his family, Ventimiglia proceeded to just look up at the camera, purse his lips, raise his eyebrows and offer a small, "Hmm." It seemed a bit all knowing, which only makes us wonder if there's a chance This Is Us will explore alternate timelines too. Or at the very least, have one episode in which they go into an alternate timeline to see what would have happened if different choices had been made or events had taken place and redirected the Pearsons' lives?

More: This Is Us' Susan Kelechi Watson & Denzel Washington Have History — Kind Of

There's also the possibility Kate will inherit her brother Randall's ability to see the ghost of Jack (which we know is brought on by stress, and there's no way Kate and Randall could genetically inherit the same kind of stress-related vision capability, but go with it). During an interview with Glamour magazine, Fogelman also hinted at the possibility of Kate seeing Jack and Jack in turn walking her down the aisle on her wedding day.

"We play with a lot of things around time and memory and what could have been, so I think [Jack walking Kate down the aisle is] definitely a possibility," Fogelman remarked. "There’s a lot of emotions [about that idea] because if you’ve lost someone tragically, you dream about them a lot. There’s a lot of different ways that can happen."

The idea of This Is Us exploring new time-bending ways to tell their story is certainly enough to get your heart racing, and the ideas presented here will no doubt make any die-hard fan of the show want to see more. If there are going to be new mysteries and questions raised in the wake of answering the big question about Jack's death, then switching up the timeline or playing around with alternate realities is certainly one heck of a way to do it.

6 Health & Fitness Tips From Olympic Athletes

Week of Female Athletes

Are you so excited for the 2018 Olympics that you wish you could, like, become an Olympian yourself? We’ve got your back. Here are the top health and fitness tips used every day by our favorite Olympic athletes.

Mornings matter

According to American swimmer Natalie Coughlin, it’s time to become a morning person. This 12-time Olympic medalist takes breakfast very seriously and considers it to be a critical foundation for the rest of your day.

"If you start your day off with a doughnut, you kind of trash that day,” Coughlin told SheKnows. “But if you start on the right foot, with a healthy breakfast, you'll be much more likely to continue making healthy choices the rest of the day.”

More: Shannon Miller on Why You Need to Make Your Health a Priority

So do your future self a favor and pair your morning coffee with a balanced breakfast of good carbs and healthy proteins. Satisfied and energized, you’ll be able to fearlessly conquer the midday munchies later.

Schedule meals around your workouts

Unlike Kerri Walsh, we can’t all fit in a daily beachfront workout. However, we can still steal her killer meal-prep tips. For this Olympic volleyball star, fueling your body before, during and after your workout is essential for optimal performance and recovery.

Walsh suggests eating an hour to an hour-and-a-half before a workout and immediately consuming protein afterward. In between your squats, burpees and power jams, don’t forget to pay attention to your body too. Often reaching for sports drinks like Gatorade while competing, Walsh reminds us to monitor and maintain our energy levels while working out to ensure a strong — and safe — finish.

Become friends with carbs

In the face of the extreme dieting trends we tend to see today, it may come as a shock that carbohydrates aren’t the enemy of serious athletes, but rather an important ally. In fact, professional soccer player and gold medalist Abby Wambach wouldn’t be able to get through warm-ups without them. "Human beings need carbohydrates,” Wambach told SheKnows. “It's our fuel. It would be like getting into a car with no gas. It's the energy that makes you go."

Wambach warns against low-calorie "quick-fix" diets and instead suggests maintaining a more individualized nutrition plan and experimenting to find the right amount of healthy, complex carbs for your body type and fitness level. Hear that? It’s time to end the feud with carbs.

Make fitness a family affair

We often forget that Olympians are parents too. So how exactly do they squeeze fitness into their full-time schedule of parenting? A busy mom of two, Olympic curler Erika Brown suggests integrating health and fitness into family time in any way you can.

Remember: Your decision-making leaves an impression on your children. The earlier you establish healthy habits, the better. So, whether it’s running around with the kids in the backyard, volunteering to coach their little league team or simply sitting down for a healthy dinner, you are exemplifying the importance of leading active lifestyles — and that deserves a medal in itself.

De-stress & decompress

After a lifetime spent on balance beams, gymnast Nastia Liukin knows a thing or two about stability. For this five-time Olympic medalist, fitness is all about seeking balance.

“Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep, taking time to exercise and taking time to do the little things that make you happy, whether it's getting a fun manicure or reading a great book or just taking a bubble bath,” Liukin told SheKnows.

Feeling stressed out can easily lead to impulsive, unhealthy decision-making. So go ahead: Treat yo’self with some daily me-time; it’s the Olympian-approved safeguard for your health goals.

Remember to rest

Our vision of an Olympic athlete often involves an alarm clock ringing at an absurdly early hour of the morning followed by an unimaginably grueling workout framed by some version of the infamous phrase, “no days off.”

This myth is busted by Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders, who stresses the importance of recognizing the difference between feeling the burn and feeling a pain.

“A large percentage of running injuries need rest from running,” Sanders, who now runs marathons competitively, told SheKnows. “When an injury occurs, runners needs to stop and listen to their bodies, force themselves to take a break from their training schedule and take care of themselves.”

Even if you're not a runner, give yourself a break. To prevent overworking your body, experiment with cross-training to give your muscles, joints and bones some recovery time. If you’re lifting weights several times a week, try yoga. If you often do high-impact workouts, incorporate swimming into your workout regimen. In addition to mixing up your workouts, Sanders is also a huge advocate for getting a solid night’s sleep. Permission to get in bed before 9 p.m. granted.

Got all that? Good — you’re one step closer to being a gold medalist. Now you've just gotta get yourself to Pyeongchang.

I Hated Fifty Shades of Grey, but All That Changed

As a professional writer, I've had a very specific beef with the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise since the moment the first book starting flying off the shelves: It's terribly written. It took a while before I was able to come around and see the real value Fifty Shades possesses: It's raunchy, cheap entertainment, not a classic piece of literature.

More: Anastasia Steele Finds Her Strength in the Final Fifty Shades Freed Trailer

I'm sorry, E. L. James. Fifty Shades is an OK story, all told. But the fact is that every one of those books is riddled with typos, grammatical errors, plot holes and dialogue that makes me cringe with my entire body. The fact that this book I could hardly stand to read was an almost instant best seller that would go on to sell 60 million copies worldwide felt like a slap in the face to the years of studying and practice I had put into being a professional writer myself.

Yeah, I know. I needed to get off my high horse.

But still, for years, I held out. I refused to read more than the first few chapters of the first book — just enough to convince myself I hated Fifty Shades and everything it stood for. I turned my nose up at the movies too. Sure, Jamie Dornan is hot, but I wouldn't support that franchise because it was making a bad writer so enormously successful. I dug in my heels and embraced my Fifty Shades hate.

Until one night, my first night on a trip to Thailand, delirious from jet lag and unable to sleep at around 3 a.m., I was scrolling through Netflix looking for something, anything, that would put me to sleep. My eyes landed on Fifty Shades, and my sleep-deprived brain came up with a plan: I hate that movie so much, I refused to watch it. If I turned it on, I would fall asleep out of pure spite.

My plan didn't work. I hate-watched every second of Fifty Shades of Grey. And then I turned on Fifty Shades Darker, and I hate-watched it too. Except I wasn't really hate-watching anymore. As the sun came up and the credits rolled on movie No. 2, I was kind of having an OK time. OK, fine — I was loving it. The story that I couldn't stand in book form was actually super-entertaining on-screen. The dialogue was mostly the same, but on the screen instead of on the page, it was hilarious instead of depressing. The story was just as ridiculously far-fetched, but for some reason, suspending disbelief was a little bit easier when I could see it all going down. Who would have guessed?

More: Another Fifty Shades Book Is on the Way, & It Means More Christian Grey

Since that fateful night, I've had a Fifty Shades night with my girlfriends and discovered it's even more fun to watch the movies with a few bottles of wine, making all the snarky comments we can think of. I can't wait for Fifty Shades Freed to hit theaters so I can have a night out with my ladies and we can make fun of that one too, because at the end of the day, I had to accept that Fifty Shades never was and never will be some kind of literary triumph. It's cheap, hilarious, delightfully bad entertainment, and that's something I can appreciate too.

The DWTS Tour Resumes After Fatal 70-Vehicle Collision

Updated Feb. 7, 7:30 a.m. PT: Rather than postpone any tour dates as was previously announced, the Dancing with the Stars: Live! Light Up the Night tour held it's previously scheduled performance at the Coronado Performing Arts Center in Rockford, Illinois, on Tuesday night, just one day after the show's tour bus was involved in a 70-car pileup near Ames, Iowa.

No one from the tour was seriously injured in the crash, and while previous estimates of the fatalities resulting from the crash were numerous, it appears that number has been adjusted by People, who reported that only one woman was killed in the accident and four others were injured.

As for the DWTS tour members, they were quick to update their fans on their states of mind and health in the wake of the accident. Dancers Sasha Farber and Emma Slater said in a statement to fans they were fine. "Thinking of everyone involved. Just wanted to let people who were asking know that we are ok and are so grateful that non [sic] of us on the tour bus was [sic] hurt. Everyone was checked out and we’re back with our group."

Meanwhile, it was announced at the start of the Rockford show that adjustments had been made to some performances to accommodate those who were recovering from minor injuries. According to one attendee speaking to E! News, "They made an announcement at the beginning that the performance would be a little different, but you could hardly tell."

Original article, published Feb. 6: There was some distressing news coming out of Iowa on Monday evening, with reports that the Dancing with the Stars tour bus had been involved in a fatal crash. While it's reported that no one in the DWTS cast or crew was seriously hurt or injured, the mere mention of "fatal" in these reports in enough to hurt your heart.

Despite not naming specific people injured in the crash, DWTS reps did release a statement to Entertainment Tonight about the incident. "One of the tour buses transporting cast and crew of Dancing with the Stars: Live! Light Up the Night was involved in a multi-car accident this afternoon due to bad weather while en route to Ames, Iowa," the show said. "All cast and crew members are fine, with some recovering from minor injuries."

DWTS went on to say that given the nature of the accident, the tour would be postponed while everyone took some time to heal up. "Given this unforeseen accident, and the fact that the safety and health of our cast and crew is of the utmost importance, tonight's show at Stephens Auditorium in Ames, Iowa, has been canceled. To anyone involved in the accident, the entire cast sends their best wishes for a speedy recovery, and their deepest apologies to all of the fans who have been waiting to see the show tonight."

Local news station KCCI 8 out of Des Moines reported on the crash as well, reporting seven deaths and approximately 185 individual accidents within the massive car crash, which involved at least 70 vehicles. According to KCCI 8, it appears that a snowstorm is to blame for this horrendous incident.

Earlier that day, cast member Frankie Muniz commented on the snowstorm while tweeting updates about the tour's progression. "Riding in the bus on our way to the show tonight in Ames, Iowa, looking out the window at the snow covered ground in this crazy blizzard listening to unreleased songs of a band I was in 8 years ago..." he wrote. The tweet was posted mere hours before the first reports of the crash came in.

And while the latest Hollywood star to announce an election bid doesn't have any real legal experience, she's at least played a lawyer on TV a few times (not that that should be comforting, because politics jobs should be for people with policymaking experience).

More: Law & Order: SVU Proves Fake News Can Have Very Real Consequences

Law and Order: SVU star Diane Neal, who fans probably remember as Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak, just returned from a social media hiatus to announce that she's running for a New York Congressional seat. Though she's a registered Democrat, Neal is running as an Independent, which will require her to collect 3,500 signatures of support to secure a guaranteed spot on the ballot for the November election.

"MORNING! Ok, so it's ON!!!" she wrote on Twitter Tuesday. "But I'm doing with nearly no staff, no donations (yet), with no party. Website will be up later today (fingers crossed) and all ready to go. But goal is bigger than parties. Goal is no negativity. Goal is HIGH ROAD all the way."

In a second tweet, she shared a campaign graphic, which reads, "Empathy & reason." She added, "And that’s why I dropped off social- to think, read, write, ponder. Reacquaint with every bit of Political Phil., History and Ethics from The Republic to Rackove. To make a plan for us worthy of American Ideals."

From her early interviews, Neal sounds like another wannabe politician trying to convince voters she's not like other politicians.

"I'm a little Libertarian, I'm a lot liberal, mostly progressive, but I have this amazing ability to be able to take really complicated policy and break it down into edible sound bites, which is something most progressive liberals cannot do," she told The Daily Freeman.

13 Things You Never Realized Alexa Could Help You Do

If you're like most of my friends, you probably wound up with an Amazon Echo as a gift last year. A tech gadget that's only been gaining popularity, it's a clever device that is vastly underutilized. My husband bought one and we already had two, and to be honest, we mostly use it as a speaker for music and a timer.

But that's a shame, because the Echo — or as it is fondly known, Alexa — is actually pretty handy. Here are just a few things it's able to do to make your life easier.

1. Control your thermostat

Install a Nest thermostat in your home and control it with an Alexa skill set.

2. Turn down the lights

All you need are some smart light bulbs, like the Philips smart bulb, and you have your own upgraded version of the clapper light. Or try the TP Link dimmable multicolor bulbs, and you can change your light color to fit your mood.

3. Watch TV

If you have a Fire TV, you can sync the two systems and you can say, “Alexa, watch Stranger Things on Netflix” and it will pop up. Some smart remotes, like the Logitech Harmony Elite, allow you to do the same thing.

4. Lock & unlock your door

If you’re running an Airbnb or frequently have guests over or even if you are constantly losing your keys, consider a smart lock that connects to Alexa and allows you to lock and unlock doors with your voice or through your phone as well as give pass codes to visitors.

5. Help you cook

With certain GE appliances, you can tell Alexa to preheat the oven or heat water for your coffee. Allrecipes has an Alexa skill that will walk you through any of their thousands of recipes. You can also ask Alexa for help with dinner ideas, like asking, “What can I make with potatoes and bacon?”

6. Get a ride

Uber and Lyft both have Amazon skills that allow you to order a car to your door. Just say, "Alexa, ask Uber to call me an UberX from work" or "Alexa, ask Lyft for a ride."

7. Find your phone

Download the TrackR iPhone app and install the Alexa skill set, and the next time you lose your phone in the house, you can ask Alexa to give it a ring (or a vibrate).

8. Entertain party guests

Alexa has several party-equipped games to play. Song Quiz plays a snippet of different music from the last 60 years. Millionaire Quiz is Amazon’s version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It even has its own Would You Rather game — and a family-friendly version as well. Having a big party? True or False can be played with up to 20 people.

9. Get in a quick workout

Alexa has a 7-minute workout lined up for you and a quick HIIT workout, or you can do a five-minute plank challenge with various plank formations.

10. Gain inner wisdom

Always intending to meditate but never making the time? If you always intend to start meditating but never make the time, there’s an Alexa skill for that. Install Guided Meditation and have three- to eight-minute meditations at your voice command at all times.

11. Get guidance from the stars

Just say, “Alexa, what’s my horoscope?” to get your daily horoscope from Elle by the AstroTwins.

12. Listen to the radio from around the world

Just say, “Alexa, play NPR,” or “Alexa, play BBC2,” and it will start playing the station via TuneIn. Or if you prefer a little laughter with your news, say, “Alexa, play The Daily Show Flash Briefing.”

13. Get help falling asleep

Alexa has several options for white noise, from rain sounds to beach sounds to fan sounds, to help you drown out the world and fall into slumber. Just say, "Alexa, help me fall asleep."

Why Rates of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Are Higher Than We Thought

$
0
0

Rates of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are higher than previously thought, with a new study suggesting that as many as 1 in 20 babies are born with the condition. The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates this may actually be a conservative estimate and may actually be closer to 1 in 10. This is significantly higher than the existing estimates, which were that it affected 1 in 100 births.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are actually a range of serious, chronic conditions caused by exposure to alcohol during fetal development. Typically, they involve damage to the central nervous system as well as having physical effects that could later lead to a wide range of permanent and lifelong health consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control, some of the features of FASD include the child having a small head, being below average weight and height and having learning difficulties and behavioral problems.

More: Drinking Alcohol While Pregnant: Safe or Risky?

In fact, because FASD frequently involves a combination of symptoms or conditions, it can be difficult to properly diagnose. In a statement, Dr. Christina Chambers, coprincipal investigator of the study and professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine, said that estimating FASD rates has always been complex because of challenges in obtaining accurate information on alcohol use during pregnancy as well as in identifying the physical and neurobehavioral characteristics of the disorders. As a result, it has been difficult to know the actual rate of FASD prevalence.

"Our results suggest that the rate of FASD in children in the United States is as high or higher than autism spectrum disorders," said Chambers. For comparison, the CDC estimates the frequency of autism spectrum disorders at 14.6 per 1,000 8-year-olds.

To conduct the study, researchers evaluated more than 6,000 first-graders in the Pacific Southwest, Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Southeast regions of the U.S. and found that 1 to 5 percent of the children had FASD. And of the 222 children diagnosed with FASD in the study, only two had a previous diagnosis despite the fact that many parents and guardians of the participants were aware of the children's learning and behavioral challenges.

"Our findings suggest that FASD is a critical health problem that often goes undiagnosed and misdiagnosed," Chambers said in a statement. "Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of birth defects and neurological abnormalities in the United States. It can cause a range of developmental, cognitive and behavioral problems, which may be recognized at any time during childhood and can last a lifetime."

More: Pregnant in 2018? Here's What You Need to Know

Out of more than 8,000 pregnant people who took part in a survey by the U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 10 percent reported recent drinking and 3 percent reported at least one binge episode within the previous 30 days. (It does not, however, take into account when during the pregnancy the binge occurred; for example, if it happened before the person was aware they were pregnant.) Though there have been conflicting studies regarding how much — if any — alcohol is safe to drink during pregnancy, the CDC and health officials like the Surgeon General recommend skipping the adult beverages completely. The highest risk for gestating a fetus with FASD is a pattern of binge drinking during pregnancy — so, not necessarily a single glass of wine at an event.

The main takeaway from this research, though, is that FSAD is far more common than we previously thought, meaning that more screening, prevention and treatment options are required to help stop this pattern.

Will Smith Mimics Son Jaden on Instagram, Wins Troll Dad Award

Will Smith wears many hats — actor, producer, songwriter, husband, father... and, as it turns out, expert social media troll. His son, Jaden Smith, hit a major milestone when his album Syre reached 100 million streams on Spotify, and Will celebrated the occasion by recreating the music video for Jaden's single "Icon."

The hilarious video, which Will posted to Instagram on Tuesday night, is a shot-for-shot recreation of "Icon." In it, he dons the same outfit as his son: a denim jacket, grills, a gold chain and blond hair. But there are a few minor changes. For example, Will wears slippers instead of black sneakers — and loses his grill mid-tune.

Awww! Trolling has never been so sweet (or so oddly capitalized).

Jaden responded with an equally heartwarming comment on the Insta post. "Dad this is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life you’re the best father anyone could ask for," he wrote. "[T]hank you for allowing me to express myself even when I take it too far sometimes I love you more than you will ever know because you taught me how to love.”

Week of Female Athletes

As the wintry doldrums of January carry on, it's nice to know that there's a chance for some excitement coming our way in the form of the 2018 Winter Olympics. With sports like figure skating, skiing, bobsledding and curling set to fill our TV screens with excitement, it's no wonder folks everywhere love to gather and take part in this unifying sporting event.

But if you're like me, you'll likely want to prepare for all the Winter Olympics excitement by getting into the right sporty headspace with a sports-centric movie or two. Now, it's easy to find a sports movie everyone will love to watch, but considering how special the occasion you're prepping for (the Olympics) is, why not watch something equally special and perhaps a little bit empowering, like a female-led sports movie?

When you think about it, there are more than a few sports-based movies that star women — women who break stereotypes, break barriers and win the gold against all odds. The following movies focus on women who want to pursue their sports dreams, excel at their craft and show the world women are every bit as good as the boys when it comes to dominating in their sport of choice.

So, let's pop some popcorn, put on our favorite jerseys and watch some of our favorite female-led sports movies, shall we?

Battle of the Sexes

This hit 2017 release stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell playing Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, respectively. Focusing on their infamous Battle of the Sexes tennis match, the film gives more time and attention to King's very public focus on equal pay and equal treatment between the sexes both in sports and society. It's an inspiring true story that will leave you cheering for King right until the very end.

Stick It

This irreverent indie dramedy follows Haley Graham, a juvenile delinquent who is court-ordered to return to the world of gymnastics after quitting suddenly a few years before. As she tries to make her new life at a high-profile gymnastics training center work, she learns to be a part of a team and reconnect with a sport she is truly talented at.

Ice Princess

Michelle Trachtenberg stars in this movie that follows a straight-A student who secretly pursues her dream of becoming a figure skater during her senior year of high school. The focus on a female protagonist who is not only dedicated to her studies (she's a math a whiz, for Pete's sake) while also staying true to her dreams is going to leave you feeling pretty darn inspired.

Gotta Kick It Up!

Featuring a young but still feisty America Ferrera, this Latina-led Disney Channel movie follows a group of high schoolers reviving the dance team at their local high school. It's a fun movie that not only puts the spotlight on women, but women of color. Plus, it brings all the cheekiness and vibrancy of a Disney Channel movie into the world of a sport many might overlook, so why not give it a watch?

Motocrossed

motocrossed clip

This is yet another Disney Channel original movie that older millennials might remember from when it aired back in the mid-'00s. Think Shakespeare's As You Like It, but with dirt bikes. A young woman loves the sport of motocross so much, but can't stand being shut out of the big leagues because it's a dumb ol' boys club. It's basically amazing, and you should probably introduce every woman you know to this amazing movie. You may even want to take up motocross after watching.

A League of Their Own

League of their own clip

League of their own clip

A League of Their Own is a rousing movie and one you need to watch ASAP. Directed by Penny Marshall and bringing together some of the biggest stars of the '90s (Tom Hanks! Geena Davis! Madonna! Rosie O'Donnell!), this film follows World War II-era women's baseball team The Rockford Peaches as they keep Americans entertained while their fellas go to war. It's just perfect TBH.

National Velvet

National Velvet Preview

National Velvet Preview

Starring a young Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney, National Velvet may be the first best female-led sports movie. This timeless classic was released way back in 1944 and begins when a little girl named Velvet wins a horse in a raffle and decides to train it to race in the Grand National Sweepstakes. Don't let the old-timey feel trick you. This movie has such a great storyline and such great acting you won't notice the outdated bits. And many of the challenges faced by Velvet and her horse, The Pie, are still barriers for girls and women today (unfortunately).

Blue Crush

If you love badass women and surfing, this movie is for you. Released in 2002, this fun, fast ride of a film follows three women who surf the huge waves of Hawaii's North Shore. But as protagonist Anne Marie Chadwick tries to put aside her fears to win a big surfing competition, she is distracted by a football player who threatens her passion and her focus. This movie wins points for its exhilarating surf sequences and for how deftly it navigates feminist issues in sports (while still including a steamy love story).

She's the Man

she's the man trailer

she's the man trailer

Here's the second movie on our list — after National Velvet — where a woman is forced to dress like a man just to play the sport she wants to play. In the 2006 teen flick She's the Man, star Amanda Bynes isn't sure what to do when her school's girls soccer team is cut and they won't let her play with the boys. The obvious solution? Cut your hair, pretend to be your twin brother and start attending his private school across town. She makes the men's team, and everything is going as planned until she falls for a young Channing Tatum and her brother returns to town. This comedy gets extra points for taking on serious issues of gender discrimination while also bringing the (admittedly corny) laughs.

Whip It

whip it trailer

This totally underrated 2009 film stars Ellen Page as a Texas teen who doesn't fit in with the pageant life her family wants for her. When she discovers roller derby, everything in her life seems to fall into place. We love the all-girl cast, including Kristen Wiig and Juliette Lewis. Bonus points that this is directed by a woman too: Drew Barrymore. Our favorite moment is when Page's character passionately confesses to her conservative family that she is in love with roller derby, not some stupid boy (although there is a tiny love interest subplot that we don't mind at all).

Wildcats

If there's one thing we love more than sports, it's Goldie Hawn. In this mostly forgotten '80s flick, we meet Molly McGrath, who applies to be the head football coach of an inner city high school team that can't seem to win. Although no one — including the team — thinks she can do it, she starts pulling off wins. The movie is funny and touching, and did we mention Goldie Hawn?

Love & Basketball

love and basketball trailer

This movie follows Monica and Quincy through their lives, which are dominated by their love of basketball (and... wait for it... each other!). From childhood to college hoops to professional ball, the two butt heads, date, break up and make up, all in between three-pointers. We love this film because Monica never compromises on her love of the game and her goals just for Quincy, which ends up being the thing he loves about her most. Aww, we want to watch this one again... immediately.

Bend It Like Beckham

Bend It Beckham Clip

For our next movie, we return to the common theme of girls who have to rebel against their families and society just to kick a ball around. In this 2002 comedy classic, the 18-year-old daughter of orthodox Sikhs outside London does all she can to keep her family happy while also joining a football (that's soccer, Americans) team. Will she pursue her dream of playing sports professionally, or will she learn to cook and get engaged like all the women who came before her? Cue this one up to find out.

Million Dollar Baby

Oh, boy, this one's a tearjerker. Rough-around-the-edges Maggie Fitzgerald, played by Hilary Swank, wants to become a champion boxer, but first, she'll have convince trainers played by Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman she's worth their time even though she's a girl. Eastwood's character finally relents, discovering Maggie is not only a fantastic athlete, she's also someone he needed in his life in order to heal and become a better person. And then... well, you just have to watch this one. We'll have the tissues ready.

Bring It On

If you don't think cheerleading is a sport, we invite you to stop reading this article right now. Actually, if you don't like Bring It On, we also invite you to stop reading this article. This is a major classic from the year 2000 in which a young and gratingly peppy Torrance Shipman, played by Kirsten Dunst, takes charge of her high school cheerleading team only to find out the squad has been cheating for years. It isn't the deepest movie that's ever been made, but it is amazing.

Let us now travel to the '80s and the wonderful world of track and field. Personal Best came out in 1982 to critical acclaim, and it's easy to see why. A young track star is training for the Olympics but gets caught up in a love triangle between her mentor (played by actual track star Patrice Donnelly) and a swimmer. Can she work hard enough to make the team, or will she get distracted by her love life? This movie is more than a bit dated, but that makes it fun. And we really appreciate the appearance of a same-sex relationship in a sports movie (can we have more of that, please?). Worth the watch!

All the Times Jennifer Aniston Rejected Society's Rules

How do I love Jennifer Aniston? Honey, let me count all the ways because there's a ton. A metric ton. And yes, you might think it's weird for me to be in such admiration and awe of a woman I have never met, but Aniston is a true original in crafting the career that she wants to have on her own terms, choosing the course of her personal life, not letting fame game get her jaded about what's important in life or just being a general badass.

Trust me, at 49 years old, Aniston is the coolest rule-breaker in Hollywood right now.

And sure, there's plenty of rule-breakers in Hollywood, but Aniston's brand of rule-breaking is legal (bonus!) and inspiring. She's been pushing back at expectations since she first broke out in Friends and keeping us all on our toes for years. Aniston is a fiercely private actress, so when she has spoken up or let the public into her world, it's been on her terms, and those terms are usually surprising. She's refused to become a stereotype, to let the world of celebrity control how we see her, and she's rejected many of the stereotypical norms of womanhood that society places on women as a whole.

More: Jennifer Aniston's BFFs Got Together & Argued Over Who the Best Friend Is

Don't believe me? Well, keep reading, because there are more than a few times that Aniston has pushed back at society's rules, and literally all those times are so inspiring you might as well put them on your vision board.

She's rejected the notion that motherhood must happen at a certain age

In July 2016, Aniston penned an op-ed titled "For the Record" for The Huffington Post wherein she denounced the notion that she is an object to be picked apart for public consumption. This included striking down the rumors (a thing she admits not readily wanting to do) that she was pregnant at the time. "For the record, I am not pregnant. What I am is fed up. I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of 'journalism,' the 'First Amendment' and 'celebrity news.'"

While she goes on in the op-ed to denounce the relationship between the press and celebrities in greater detail, it's the reason that Aniston spoke up — those rumors of impending motherhood — that are part of a bigger issue with Aniston: just because you don't have children by a certain age, it doesn't mean you don't want them or that you're less of a woman for not having them. In 2015, she told Allure, "I don’t like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women — that you’ve failed yourself as a female because you haven’t procreated. I don’t think it’s fair. You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t mothering — dogs, friends, friends’ children. This continually is said about me: that I was so career-driven and focused on myself; that I don’t want to be a mother, and how selfish that is" — that final notion being something Aniston goes on to reject, too.

Aniston GIF 1

She gave the middle finger to the paparazzi (kinda)

In that same 2016 HuffPo op-ed, Aniston completely rejected the idea of the press as needing to have complete access to her life or the life of any celebrity, for that matter.

"If I am some kind of symbol to some people out there, then clearly I am an example of the lens through which we, as a society, view our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, female friends and colleagues. The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing. The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty."

She plays against type

Maybe one of the best and most fun things about Aniston is that she doesn't like to just play roles meant for pretty women. You know the kind: all beauty, no brains, with little to no dialogue and a whole lot of objectification. Hell no, that's not for her.

Sure, Aniston's popped up in rom-coms, but they've been unconventional ones where her character gets to decide on her own happy ending or do something out of the ordinary: The Break-Up, The Switch, The Bounty Hunter. Or she sank her teeth into darker, meatier roles, like in Cake and The Good Girl. And in recent years, she's played some rather bawdy, raucous, powerful women, like the characters she played in Horrible Bosses, We're the Millers and Office Christmas Party.

More: Jennifer Aniston: "It’s Up to Us What Makes Us Happy"

She found love again — on her own terms

After the very public breakdown of her marriage to Brad Pitt, Aniston's personal life became tabloid fodder. Constantly caught in some cooked-up love triangle between herself, Pitt and Pitt's then-girlfriend, Angelina Jolie, Aniston became the perceived victim in a melodrama that wasn't even really happening. She didn't succumb to the melodrama, nor did she allow the tabloids to get into her head and paint her as the victim. No way, no how. Nor did she do the thing expected of her: start a public feud with Pitt or Jolie. Instead, she continued to live her life. Which might be why, when it came to her relationship with her second husband, actor Justin Theroux, Aniston kept it quiet and to herself, and she found love again on her own terms.

Aniston GIF 2

She's a philanthropist

Forget believing she's a jaded celebrity; Aniston gives back to her community in major ways. She has made it clear that she is not an inward-looking, self-obsessed celebrity, nor does she abide by the idea that she has to keep her money to herself in order to remain rich and/or enriched. Rather than keeping her wealth to herself, Aniston has chosen to involve herself in philanthropic efforts like Doctors Without Borders, an organization to which she donated around $500,000 for relief in Haiti in 2010, and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, an organization that honored her in 2016 for her involvement and donation of time and money.

She's a businesswoman

Another way that Aniston pushes back at ideas about how she should use her fame or public image is in the ways she conducts business. Be it co-founding Plan B production company or popping up as the spokesperson for various brands like Smart Water and EyeLove, Aniston keeps us on our toes.

She isn't active on social media

Go ahead and search for "Jennifer Aniston" on Twitter or Instagram. I'll wait.

You'll have an easy time finding fan accounts for Aniston, but you won't find the real thing. Aniston doesn't subscribe to traditional celebrity habits like maintaining public access through social media, preferring instead to keep a low profile. And while other celebrities her age are coming into the Instagram or Twitter fold, she is keeping her personal life on lockdown like a total boss.

Her marriage to Justin Theroux is tailor-made for her

When this story was reported back in December 2017, outlets attempted to spin the fact that Aniston and her hubby were living and working on separate coasts as a sign of marital trouble. You know what I see when I look at this story? A sign that Aniston and Theroux don't subscribe to ideas about traditional marriage wherein it's necessary to either be glued to one another's side or that Aniston should stay home and wait for her husband or any other such nonsense. They're dedicated to one another and to their careers — what a wild idea, right?

Ben Affleck's Father Reveals Who (or What) Is to Blame For His Son's Alcoholism

It's a little bit of a rough time to be in the Affleck family. The two A-list Affleck brothers, Ben and Casey, have both come under serious fire for mistreatment of women in the reckoning that's taking on Hollywood's culture of sexism and abuse. They've both undergone recent, high-profile divorces. And Ben has been back to rehab for his long-publicized fight against alcoholism.

More: Ben Affleck Made an Uncomfortable Joke About Sexual Misconduct in Hollywood

In a rare interview, their father, Timothy Affleck, is speaking up in defense of his boys. He thinks there's only one thing to blame for all the personal demons that are plaguing the Affleck brothers lately: their careers.

"Hollywood is a disgusting place," he told Grazia. "I think that's been a major factor in Ben's drinking. You're kind of forced to develop a persona that is hard to shed and go home to your family. It affects your whole life. I think that's one of the dangers of the film industry."

He also confessed that he has also struggled with alcoholism, but blamed Ben's drinking for it.

"I was a chronic, severe alcoholic for several years. I had to recover and, happily, I did," he said. "Ben has always been serious about getting sober. There is no question about that. He wants a balanced life and he is working at it."

As for the #MeToo movement, and the accusations that have come against both Ben and Casey?

"You'd have to ask them. It doesn't interest me, they know what they're doing," Timothy said. But he went on to defend his sons, adding, "They're both kind and good men. They treat women well, I can guarantee that. After 40 odd years, you know your kids. Both of my sons are hard workers. They have a tremendous amount of empathy, they don't forget where they came from, they're very kind and generous. Those are the qualities that I value."

Childbirth is never a walk in the park, but sometimes things really don't go as planned. Case in point: A woman and her partner were headed into the hospital for the momentous occasion, but baby Max had other plans. The mom's water broke in the hallway of the ER, and Max dove full speed ahead into the world. (Raise your hand if this is your worst birth fear.)

The incident was captured by photographers — and they show that childbirth is always pretty terrifying and beautiful.

The hospital staff handled the unexpected turn of events like pros. Although the birth occurred in an inconvenient area of the hospital (rather than in, say, the labor and delivery wing hallway), they safely delivered Max and ensured that mother and son were given the immediate chance to bond.

The images were posted on the Babies are beautiful Facebook page. "These are raw birth images shared to demonstrate the beauty of birth even when things do not go remotely as planned," the post read.

Social media comments are, uh, not always especially kind — but in this case, readers were quick to praise the mom, hospital staff and the baby's dad for handling the situation so well.

"I don't care what anyone says I am a mother and I think these pictures are amazing and show the reality of child birth and it's beauty," one woman wrote. (Amen.)

One Bachelor: Winter Games Contestant Got Very Busy In the 'Bang Room'

While we're all eagerly awaiting the start of the 2018 Winter Olympics and the new Bachelor spin-off that will accompany them, Bachelor: Winter Games, wee luckily have one contestant who's willing to spill some of the goods before the show hits our TVs. And spoiler alert: It's just as raunchy as we've come to expect our Bachelor spin-offs to be.

Lily McManus, who was a runner-up on The Bachelor New Zealand, apparently made friends with some of our favorite American contestants. Like, Ben Higgins, who she had a little rendezvous with in the 'bang room.' Sorry, though — it's not quite what you think.

"Me, Ben [Higgins] and Michael [Garofola] were lying in the room where people go to have sex -- we definitely didn’t have one of those on New Zealand Bachelor!" McManus explained. "We were lying in bed and having a roast, ripping into Jordan [Mauger] because he was fresh in the house, so everyone was giving him crap. Jordan would stand there and we’d start rapping. Michael said some really fucked up stuff."

A rap battle to heckle new contestants? We're already very interested in seeing this show.

McManus didn't stop there. She also talked about the first time she met Higgins, and apparently, they went a long way before ending up in bed together, however innocently.

"At first, I was like, ‘I don’t really know what’s going on with this guy -- he seems a bit withdrawn,’" she explained. "Then the first conversation we had privately, my whole perspective of him flipped upside down. He talked about his ex-relationship and was very open with me. He’s a gentle, kind, well-spoken, caring guy, who’s really in touch with how he feels."

Yep, that pretty much sounds like the Higgins we know and love. So does she fall for him? That's one thing she didn't say, and something we're going to have to tune in to see for ourselves.

The Kensington Palace Released More Details About the Royal Wedding

Updated Feb. 12, 2018, 10:30 a.m. PT: May keeps inching closer, and that means more and more royal wedding details are hitting the headlines. Over the weekend, we learned a little more about what to expect when May 19 rolls around and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say their I do's, including what time we'll need to be up to be able to tune in to the ceremony.

According to Kensington Palace, the wedding is set for noon in the U.K., which is 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific. It's gonna be an early morning for those of us on the West Coast, but it'll be worth it to see royal history being made.

The palace also revealed that after exchanging vows, Harry and Markle will lead a parade through the streets of Windsor, riding in a horse-drawn carriage. It's something Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge did on their wedding day, and it was definitely a highlight. We're so excited to see it becoming something of a tradition.

The one thing the palace isn't revealing is who or how many people made the guest list. We still don't even know if invitations have been sent out, but we do know that St. George's Chapel can hold about 800 people, so there's plenty of space for a large wedding.

Spring really can't get here soon enough.

Original story, published Jan. 5, 2018: The next royal wedding was only just announced, and yet it's right around the corner. Before we know it, May will be here, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be exchanging their vows. With only five months to go before the big day, obviously we're hungrily searching the internet for all the information we can find about the upcoming ceremony.

Some of the latest news to hit the 'net is that both Markle and Harry are starting to assemble their wedding parties. A source told Us Weekly that Markle is sticking to some American traditions, despite the very British wedding that's being planned, and that means she's chosen a maid of honor rather than a chief bridesmaid.

"While it is very much a British wedding, expect a few American touches too," the insider said. There's still no confirmation about exactly who her maid of honor is going to be, but there are definitely some predictions out there: Markle's best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney, fellow actress Priyanka Chopra and Suits co-star Sarah Rafferty would all be unsurprising picks.

Harry, on the other hand, has a pretty easy choice for his best man.

"Harry has several close guy friends, but there's no way he would ask anyone but William to take on the top job," a source told Us Weekly last month. That one was a no-brainer.

While the royal family is hard at work preparing for the wedding, all of Britain is preparing for the huge influx of tourism that will likely come with it. When Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot in 2011, 350,000 tourists came to the UK for the big day. Britain's Office of National Statistics is already expecting similar crowds around Harry and Markle's May 18 wedding date, as well as a $680 million boost to the UK's economy because of the wedding. Two beautiful lovebirds tying the knot and single-handedly boosting their country's economy? What a win-win.
