How to Teach Your Kids (& Yourself) About Black History Month

$

Since the 2016 presidential election, we've seen a lot of (positive and negative) change in American society. Yet amid seemingly countless tragedies, powerful movements for change — from #BlackLivesMatter to #MeToo and #TimesUp to the Women's March — are growing and thriving. Today, for kids and adults alike, it's crucial to learn about our country's history in order to better educate those who are underinformed or uninformed. And black history is an immense part of that national history. If you haven't brushed up on your facts lately, here's where you can begin.

First, explain to your kids what "black history" means

What is Black History Month? It is a 28-day recognition of the achievements of all black folks, but specifically African-Americans. Originally called "Negro History Week" (ugh) in February of 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, the founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life, the annual celebration became a monthlong event and was renamed sometime after the 1960s.

The purpose of this month is to celebrate the endeavors and accomplishments of black people throughout history — from the inventor of the Eder-Berry biopsy gastroscope to the first black president. But most important, it's about the epic challenges and struggles black Americans have had to overcome in order to reach those successes — from slavery to the civil rights struggles that are still ongoing today.

Second, read up on diversity

Let's be honest. Talking about diversity isn't always easy, especially when that discussion is with young children. But luckily, there are many books for kids and adults that teach powerful black history subjects in colorful and enlightening ways. Here is some of the best black history reading out there for adults so you can read up before tackling the topic with your kids.

If your child is school-age, here are a few great books — available at local libraries, bookstores and even via e-book — to suggest they read or that you can read together. These stories are great for sparking an important conversation about racial equality — and there are a lot more books out there about all forms of diversity.

Next, watch history together

There are a variety of ways to teach kids about black history, and watching movies just happens to be one of the most fun methods. What kid would object to grabbing a snack, popping in a movie and getting comfortable to learn about important topics? You can stream a film on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon — we recommend The Loving Story or Barry as well as the 2016 miniseries Roots.

Invite kids to listen to inspiring black musical artists

Crank up some tunes for a Black History Month party with the kids. Put on some Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Grace Jones, Beyoncé, Kanye West (OK, maybe just the PG-13 songs) and let the music speak for itself. Just don't try to list every talented black singer, songwriter, producer, musician, etc. — that would take centuries.

Teach them about black icons

There have been great black Americans throughout history. From the original black legends (like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass) to Civil Rights Movement icons (like Martin Luther King Jr., Angela Davis, and Audre Lorde) to the amazing black leaders of your kids' lifetime (hi, Obamas!) black activists, authors and thinkers have shaped what America is today. Inventors like Leonidas Berry and George Washington Carver, authors like Maya Angelou and Lorraine Hansberry, lawyers like George Washington Williams, educators like Booker T. Washington, politicians like Shirley Chisholm and Maxine Waters, major business owners like Chris Gardner... black Americans have made countless contributions to our country.

2-Ingredient Dessert Recipes That Will Satiate Your Sweet Tooth

If you were born with a sweet tooth, you know what it's like to get a late-evening craving or to be plotting your dessert all day or salivate through the pastry department when you make your grocery runs. And if you like to make your desserts from scratch, you might get a little overeager in the baking department.

But if you want to keep it simple every once in a while, we recommend these two-ingredient desserts. They're simple and though not always fast, they're always delicious. And they won't require you to pull every last baking supply down from your cabinet to make them.

1. Two-ingredient lemon cake bars recipe

2-ingredient lemon cake bars

Lemon bars are a classic citrus dessert. These bars take on the best of both worlds — cake and lemon bars. They have an intense lemon flavor with a slight cake bite. You're going to love these powdered sugar-topped bars.

Yields 9 x 13-inch pan

Ingredients:

  • 1 box angel food cake mix
  • 1 (22-ounce) can lemon pie filling
  • Powdered sugar (optional)

Directions:

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees F, and spray a 9 x 13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the angel food cake mix and lemon pie filling.
  3. Once fully mixed, add to the prepared pan, and bake for about 35 minutes, until fully cooked and the top is lightly browned.
  4. Let the cake cool, cut it into bars, and if desired, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

2. Two-ingredient flourless Nutella cake

Two ingredient Nutella cake

Get the recipe over at Kirbie Craving. But follow it precisely, as this recipe tends to get eggy or fall flat if the directions aren't followed. The other downside is that you have to wait two to three hours for the cake to cool after you've prepared it. But this is delicious and super-simple, and let's be real — you probably have the ingredients waiting for you already.

3. Two-ingredient strawberry fudge recipe

2-ingredient strawberry fudge

Strawberry fudge is simple and easy to throw together with this two-ingredient recipe. This dish is sweet and full of strawberry flavor. We cut our fudge into heart shapes, but you can easily cut it into squares as well.

Yields 8 x 8-inch dish

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces white chocolate, melted
  • 1 container whipped strawberry frosting
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Directions:

  1. Line an 8 x 8-inch baking dish with parchment paper, and set it aside.
  2. To a medium mixing bowl, add the melted white chocolate and whipped strawberry frosting. Stir until completely combined.
  3. Stir a few sprinkles into the chocolate-frosting mixture, if desired.
  4. Add the mixture to the prepared pan, and refrigerate for at least an hour before cutting.

What to Write in a Valentine's Day Card for Every Relationship Stage

Some people are gifted with a way with words, but other people... not so much. If you've ever attempted to write a thoughtful, appropriate Valentine's Day card only to wind up with a million pieces of paper ripped up at your feet — this one's for you.

Valentine's Day messages are rough! You don't want to go overboard and freak out someone you just started dating — but if you've been with someone for a long time who really means a lot to you, you don't want to write out a card that might come off as trite. The good news is you can be romantic — and not cheesy — with a perfect little quote or phrase in a personalized Valentine's Day card.

Whether you're casually dating someone, in a long-term relationship or have been married for decades, here's how to approach your Valentine's Day love note.

The new relationship

Tip: Avoid sexual comments. They may be fun, but they're best kept out of a card, especially in the new relationship.

You want to express your care for someone you're still getting to know, without being too serious. Here are a few ideas on what to write:

  • I love that you're my Valentine!
  • Muah! Happy Valentine's Day!
  • I was never a fan of this holiday until meeting you, my sweet Valentine.
  • I've loved getting to know you and spending time with you. Happy Valentine's Day!

The steady boyfriend or girlfriend

Valentine's Day could be the perfect time to let your long-term love know just how much they mean to you and how much you're looking forward to the future. Ideas on what to write include:

  • The past few Valentine's Days with you have been wonderful. I'm looking forward to many more!
  • You mean everything to me. Happy Valentine's Day to my one and only.
  • "True love stories never have endings." – Richard Bach
  • "We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love." – Author unknown
  • "When I saw you, I was afraid to meet you. When I met you, I was afraid to kiss you. When I kissed you, I was afraid to love you. Now that I love you, I'm afraid to lose you." – Rene Yasenek

Our favorite quote: "Grow old with me! The best is yet to be." – Robert Browning

The spouse

Today's the day to let your husband know just how much you love and appreciate him. And since you already won him over, you can be as cheesy as you please! Cute quotes and sayings to write on his card include:

  • "Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite." – Author unknown
  • You are the love of my life — always have been, always will be. Happy Valentine's Day to the person of my dreams.
  • "Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own." – Robert A. Heinlein
  • "A hundred hearts would be too few to carry all my love for you." – Author unknown

And a few bonus Valentine's Day quotes for the humorous couple:

  • "Without Valentine's Day, February would be… well, January." – Jim Gaffigan
  • "I love being married. It's so great to find one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life." – Rita Rudner
  • "I don't understand why Cupid was chosen to represent Valentine's Day. When I think about romance, the last thing on my mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at me with a weapon." – Author unknown

HGTV knows when they have a good thing on their hands, which is why they're not letting Property Brothers stars Drew and Jonathan Scott go anywhere anytime soon. The Scotts are poised to become even bigger, more ingrained household names thanks to their recently renewed deal with HGTV, which ensures they will stay on the airwaves across multiple TV shows for the next several years. Can you dig that?

More: Drew & Jonathan Scott Reveal Which HGTV Star They'd Love to Work With

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HGTV is deeply excited about the prospect of the Scott brothers bringing new episodes across their four (and maybe more in the future?) shows they currently have on the air: Property Brothers, Buying & Selling, Property Brothers At Home and Brother vs. Brother. As Scripps Networks Interactive (parent company of HGTV) GM of U.S. programming and development Allison Page tells it: "[The Scott brothers'] work ethic and commitment means they can produce and star in an incredible amount of content in a very short period of time. It also ensures we have a premiere episode with them 52 weeks a year, which is an amazing feat and not something we've achieved with anyone else."

In a joint statement to THR, the brothers sound just as excited for what lies ahead where their budding HGTV empire is concerned. "We’re beyond excited to continue the relationship with our incredibly talented friends at HGTV," Drew remarked, with Jonathan adding, "We truly love what we do, and promise that even though we have a ridiculous amount of fun, we’ll actually get a little work done, too, and continue helping families through our shows."

The Scott brothers have slowly been making Los Angeles their home base since they broke out into the mainstream, and it feels like this renewed HGTV deal is just the thing to seal the deal that America is about to get the Scott treatment. Add to this the fact that Chip and Joanna Gaines will soon be off the HGTV airwaves, and it feels like the road is open for the Scotts to come in with some new and exciting ideas. It will, without a doubt, be interesting to see what they choose to do next.

Girl Scout Sells 300 Boxes of Cookies Outside Marijuana Dispensary

If there's any group that understands their target market like the backs of their hands, it's the Girl Scouts.

Case in point: one particular Girl Scout from California who sold cookies outside a marijuana dispensary in San Diego on Feb. 2. The girl's father told Dallas, Texas, news station Fox 4 she sold 300 boxes in just six hours.

The Girl Scout received some help from the dispensary itself, Urbn Leaf, who posted a photo of her on its Instagram account with the caption, "Get some Girl Scout Cookies with your GSC today until 4pm! Have a friend that wants to #tagalong? Bring them with – shopping is more fun with friends anyways."

According to Girl Scouts San Diego, booth sales do not start for another week, but the scouts are allowed to sell from wagons as long as a parent or guardian is present.

"So, if that's what they say they were doing ... then they were right within the rules," the Girl Scout's father said.

This isn't the first time a Girl Scout sold outside a marijuana dispensary, though. In 2014, a scout sold 117 boxes in two hours according to the Los Angeles Times. With the store's blessing, 13-year-old Danielle Lei and her mother set up shop outside the Green Cross store with the cookies. A spokesperson for the Green Cross, Holli Bert, told the LA Times at the time Lei ran out of cookies after just 45 minutes.

Lei's mother, Carol, spoke to Mashable as well, telling them she "can be a cool parent for a little bit."

"You put it in terms that they may understand," she said. "I'm not condoning it. I'm not saying go out in the streets and take marijuana. It also adds a little bit of cool factor."

Following Lei's bold move to sell outside a pot dispensary, Girl Scouts of America Colorado issued a statement via Twitter that said, "If you are wondering, we don't allow our Girl Scouts to sell cookies in front of marijuana shops or liquor stores/bars."

However, Kelly Parisi, chief communications officer from Girl Scouts of the USA, told the LA Times each region makes its own decisions regarding how the program is run.

"As always, our primary concern is the safety and well-being of the girls we serve," Parisi said. "Volunteers and parents are empowered to relocate their booths if conditions change and the location is no longer suitable."

Meghan Markle Talked in Code About Prince Harry While Filming Suits

When you're in an exciting new relationship, of course you want to talk about it with your friends, even your friends at work. But for Meghan Markle, that was a little more complicated than for the average person. When you're dating an actual card-carrying member of the royal family, it's pretty frowned upon to gossip about it around the watercooler. So on the set of Suits, Markle had to come up with another plan.

Wendell Pierce, who played her father on the show, just appeared on Harry Connick Jr.'s talk show, Harry, where he explained how Markle was able to get away with giving updates to certain costars who were in the loop about her exciting new relationship without giving anything away to eavesdropping ears.

"She met this nice guy and we always talked about him in code, really," Pierce explained. "You know, 'How you doing?' 'Oh, I’m going to London, coming from London, whatever.'"

All the cast members who knew about Markle and Harry's relationship before it became public reportedly talked to her about it that way. And you have to give them props for having her back and keeping such a juicy secret to themselves. I know if my coworker were dating an actual bona fide prince, I'd want to tell everyone I know.

That just shows how tight-knit the cast of Suits was; Pierce also opened up about the last words he had with Markle when she exited the show to focus full-time on her royal future.

"I had a really wonderful moment as we were coming to an end of her time on the show," he said. "It was just she and I in the room, and I said, 'I know your life is going to change but always know, no matter where you are, I will always be your loving fake father.'"

Too sweet.

What Is Swedish Death Cleaning, & Why Is It Becoming So Popular?

$

The term "Swedish death cleaning" sounds morbid, especially if you're overly sentimental like me, but after learning more about it, you might start singing a different tune. Known as dostadning in Sweden, the term was introduced to much of the world with last year's The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson. The subtitle, How to Free Yourself and Your Family From a Lifetime of Clutter, reveals the basic thought behind the practice. Swedish death cleaning is about death, yes, but it's also about making life simpler while you're still able to enjoy it.

More: Marie Kondo, the Queen of Tidying Up, Is Coming Out With a Graphic Novel

What is Swedish death cleaning?

Simply put, Swedish death cleaning is the act of carefully divesting yourself of your possessions in the years before your death in order to make the process of your death easier on your loved ones. I know from experience how harrowing it can be to have a loved one die only to be left to sort through years of their belongings, trying to find the rare precious memento amid piles of ancient newspapers, knicknacks and clutter. Instead, Magnusson recommends that you embark on the journey to declutter your life before it's too late. Not only will you be ensuring that those left behind don't find themselves knee-deep in your belongings after you die, but it will also allow you to simplify your life so you can spend more time enjoying your favorite things and less time trying to figure out exactly how to organize everything in your overflowing closet.

How to use the method in real life

Of course, you don't have to wait until you think you're about to die to take a more minimalistic approach to housekeeping and shopping. Starting to declutter now can help you maintain a more minimalist approach to home decor and organization in the future, so when the time comes, you don't have to embark on an epic cleaning spree. Here are some tips to get you started.

Clear your closets

Magnusson recommends starting with your closet. Most people have at least a few (and more likely, a dozen or more) articles of clothing that are too big, too small or just not quite right that could be tossed. Linen closets are often overstuffed with towels and sheets — how many pillowcases do you really need? — and we all have that one closet that's just there for the miscellaneous things we don't know what to do with. Magnusson recommends removing everything from the closet and giving it a good cleaning, then putting the essential items back just so while setting the rest aside to sell, gift or throw away.

Sell goods, buy experiences

Some incentive for decluttering is that you can sell your unwanted belongings at a yard sale, a consignment shop or online. Furniture, clothes, kitchenware — everything is a candidate. The key is using the money you make, not to replace the stuff you sold, but rather on a new memory-making opportunity. After all, you can't take it with you!

Give gifts

In Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, she urges readers to get rid of any possessions that don't spark joy. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning takes a more altruistic approach to this concept — what items of yours could make someone else happy? Whether you're donating something you don't really love to someone in need or giving treasured items to friends and family members along the way, paring down your possessions is a great opportunity to give.

More: 12 Gorgeous DIYs to Make Your Home a Little Brighter This Winter

It can be hard to let go of your things, but Magnusson stresses that memories are more important than possessions. Just because you associate a fraying sun hat with your summer spent in Italy doesn't mean your kids, friends or other loved ones will. Try to remember that it's more important to live in the moment and focus on creating new memories rather than clinging to the past. With The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, letting go is a little bit easier.

Chrissy Teigen Posted a Video of Luna Singing an Original Song, & We're Dying

What is this sorcery? Why can we not get enough of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend's daughter Luna Simone? On Monday, the 21-month-old was rocking the mic with some original tunes for her appreciative mom, who posted her daughter's singing video to social media. Behold the ultimate cuteness.

How much do we love her solo concert — and Teigen's excited, "Yaaaaay"? So very much. And that's no surprise since performing is definitely in Luna's blood, what with her papa being a Grammy and Oscar winner and her mom a star of Lip Sync Battle.

More: Chrissy Teigen Had the Flyest Birthday Party Ever

“She likes to [sit at the] piano with me and play,” Legend told People in January. “You know, who knows what that will develop into.” The singer revealed that he's been writing a lot of new songs lately and that Luna seems interested in what he's up to.

We're guessing Legend's songwriting inspiration might come in part from the baby he and Teigen have on the way. The couple is expecting their second child to arrive in November — and at the Grammy Awards in late January, Teigen revealed the baby is a boy.

Teigen, it seems, is definitely ready for their little guy to arrive. On Saturday, she tweeted that the pregnancy is wearing her out. “This baby is sucking the life from me," she wrote. "Drinking my water, making me dry. Eating my food, making me hungry. Taking my health, making me sick... Why do we create these monsters they want us dead,” she quipped.

But, yeah, pregnancy — not so fun. We can't wait to hear news of the latest Teigen-Legend arrival — and hopefully, Teigen and Legend will be just as forthcoming on social media with his baby antics (and original song compositions).

'Momager' Kris Jenner Is Every Grandma

When "momager" became a word, we're not exactly sure. But that's how Kris Jenner — the grand-matriarch of the ever-growing Kardashian-Jenner clan — seems to be permanently branded. Although she may be the most famous momager of our time, these days, she's relishing the role of grandmother (grandmomager?).

This week, Kris Jenner made her first public appearance since daughter Kylie Jenner's baby was born on Feb. 1. She attended the Rachel Zoe Collection Presentation and Dinner in Los Angeles, and she was more than happy to chat with People about Kylie's new life.

“She’s amazing. An amazing mom,” Kris said. On the topic of Kylie's 11-minute pregnancy journey video — “To Our Daughter” on YouTube, Kris didn't hold back. “I was bawling! I was crying so hard, especially at the end."

MoreKris & Kylie Jenner Might Be Launching a Maternity-Wear Line?

Kris is featured in the video as well; it begins with her own pregnancy and the birth of Kylie. (Awwww.) Later in the video, Kris says directly to Kylie's baby, "I can't wait to see you, meet you, kiss you, love you, teach you things that maybe only I can teach you." We're telling you, Grandma Kris is a natural. Kris also gushed in Kylie's video, "The baby is so lucky because she has the best mom." (Um, no offense, Kim and Kourtney and Khloé?)

Like oh-so many grandmas, Kris isn't shy with the advice. She told Us she said to Kylie, “Enjoy every second." She added, "I think she's excited."

More: Kylie Apologizes to Fans as She Announces Baby's Birth

Not as excited as we are to learn the name of Kylie's baby. According to Us, Kris said she wasn't involved in the naming process — but OMG are fans going crazy trying to guess the baby's new moniker. Top theories include: Butterfly (a favorite symbol of Kylie's), Monarch (also a butterfly) and Posie (the name of the Lip Kit creator's latest beauty product). Others are obsessed with the floral arrangement in the shape of a C (sent by Aunt Khloé) that Kylie recently shared on social media. The C conspiracy crowd insists that we're about to be introduced to a young Crop Top or Culotte or Chevy Jenner Scott. (OK, we made those up).

Whatever the new baby's name is, she's got a fleet of doting new aunties and cousins, and a grandmomager who already adores her to pieces. Not a bad start in life.

Ryan Seacrest Pens an Article About the Sexual Misconduct Allegations He Faced

$

0

Ryan Seacrest, never one to sit back and stay quiet, is speaking out about the sexual harassment allegations that were levied against him late last year. Last week, he was cleared by an external investigation, which stated that there was "insufficient evidence to substantiate allegations against Seacrest."

More: How Kelly Ripa's Husband Mark Consuelos Really Feels About Ryan Seacrest

In an open letter, Seacrest talked about how it felt to hear about the allegations.

"In November, I received a letter from a lawyer representing a former show stylist. She claimed that I mistreated her more than a decade ago when we worked together. This arrived during an unprecedented public reckoning by women in our industry and beyond, courageously coming forward to share their stories, many of them heartbreaking. These women sought to bring attention to the systemic gender inequality that has occurred for decades. I was — and am — amazed at their bravery," he wrote.

"To have my workplace conduct questioned was gut-wrenching. I’ve always aimed to treat all of my colleagues with honesty, respect, kindness and compassion. Yet, I knew, regardless of the confidence I had that there was no merit to the allegations, my name would likely soon appear on the lists of those suspected of despicable words and deeds. The pressures of our overflowing newsfeeds would insist on it. I absolutely want to be part of the change, the progress, that is coming. I did not want to be a postscript of evidence of its cause."

He went on to explain how important he thinks it is that we presume innocence for those accused, writing, "At a time when improper interactions between men and women, particularly in the workplace, are part of a national conversation, we must find a way to ensure that everyone — the public, private and public institutions, accusers and alleged accused — is given the opportunity for a swift and fair review."

More: Kelly Ripa Makes Huge Announcement About Ryan Seacrest's Future

He then went on to say this: "My job is to listen. Beyond listening, which I will continue in earnest, I also will ask questions and try to help voices be heard. It isn’t lost on me that my platforms — radio, TV, social media — can be powerful conduits for change."

But that's wrong. Seacrest's job is not simply to listen. In fact, listening to women when they tell the harrowing stories of the abuse, marginalization and dismissal they have faced is not a brave or important act — it's the baseline for being a decent human being. As a man with power and privilege most women can only dream of, Seacrest has a much harder job. He needs to use his power to take actual action to change the culture of harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry. He doesn't seem to realize this.

Another thing Seacrest doesn't seem to realize is that women very rarely make false accusations about men who mistreat them. We often have more to lose than to gain by speaking up. Women are historically blamed and vilified for accusing men of bad behavior. And when there's no evidence to support their claims, as there generally isn't when it's one woman's word against one man's, our credibility is destroyed, regardless of whether there was truth to the allegations.

More: American Idol Officially Started Filming, & Ryan Seacrest Documented Its First Day

Just because an investigation did not find evidence to support this claim against Seacrest doesn't mean he's off the hook. Men simply don't think about their words the same way women do. They think nothing of the jokes and offhand comments they make that can make women deeply uncomfortable because women are conditioned to see the possibility of danger in every interaction with men. Instead of speaking up about how difficult it has been to have his character questioned, now is the time for Seacrest to examine his and other men's behavior and actually commit to making changes.

Skier Mikaela Shiffrin is only 22 years old, but she's already accomplished more than most people her age ever will — seriously, her list of accomplishments is ridiculous (I personally feel quite lazy and inadequate in comparison). Just to prove it, here's a quick recap of her biggest successes thus far:

  • Shiffrin made Olympic history at the Sochi Games four years ago when she became the youngest athlete to win the slalom event.
  • She won the World Cup overall title last year and was dubbed the best slalom skier in the world.
  • Heading into Pyeongchang, she has 41 (!!!) titles on the World Cup circuit (only one other skier had as many victories at 22 years old, Austria's Annemarie Moser-Pröll).

Shiffrin not only has an admirable amount of drive, dedication and talent, but simply put, she also has the sheer will to win. And win she will at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Before you watch this fierce female athlete win the gold for Team USA, get to know Mikaela Shiffrin a little bit better.

SheKnows: What’s your earliest memory of skiing?

Mikaela Shiffrin: I remember I was 5 years old. It was my first memory of a powder day in Vail, and I got stuck under the snow and felt like I was suffocating. My dad pulled me out of the snow upside down by my ski boots and gave me a few quick instructions on how to ski in powder snow. He told me to lean a little bit back so my ski tips didn’t sink into the snow and not to use my edges so much, so I skied straight down the next run totally in the backseat and had to wait at the bottom of the trail for 15 minutes for everyone to catch up to me.

SK: What’s your earliest memory of watching the Olympics?

MS: I remember watching replays of Bode winning his medals in Salt Lake City. I dreamed about winning Olympic medals like him, but I did not expect that it would really happen until it actually did.

SK: Tell us about the moment you realized you were making the Olympic skiing team.

MS: When I started winning World Cup races consistently, I realized that I could make my Olympic dream more of a goal, and I could probably reach it!

Mikaela Shiffrin Instagram 1

SK: What would people be surprised to learn about training for the Olympics?

MS: One thing people don’t realize about my sport is that even though I have training sessions that last five hours or so, I only get about seven to 10 minutes doing my actual sport because the rest of the time is spent on chairlifts, doing video analysis, taking a rest. It does not add up to a lot of time as in other sports, for example tennis, where you can hit a ball for three hours straight and get a ton of practice.

SK: What are some obstacles you’ve had to overcome on your road to competing in the Olympics? Did you ever think about quitting?

MS: One of the bigger obstacles that I recently faced was a knee injury last year. Luckily it was not as bad as it could have easily been, but I tore my MCL, got a tibial plateau fracture and a large bone bruise, and had to take two months off from skiing in the middle of the competition season. I did not need surgery, but I was on crutches for two weeks, had to learn how to walk again, and spent a ton of time in rehab and therapy trying to do basic things like straightening and bending my knee or activating my quad muscle. All of that gets quite monotonous when you spend your whole life skiing at 40 to 80 miles per hour, and all of a sudden you can’t do simple things like get milk from the refrigerator or walk down stairs.

SK: How do women support one another in your sport?

MS: We spend every waking hour together from the beginning of the season to the end and during all of my on-snow camps, so it starts to feel a bit like a family. All the women are really cool, funny, and work really hard.

Mikaela Shiffrin Instagram 3

Mikaela Shiffrin Instagram 3

SK: Do you have any competition rituals, lucky charms or superstitions?

MS: No real rituals, I like to listen to music before my races to keep myself calm, and sometimes I will do word searches with my mom. We have two copies of the same word search and will race to see who can find all of the words first. The only thing I usually have with me is a St. Christopher necklace from my best friend that she gave to me before I started traveling on the World Cup to keep me safe through all of the traveling.

SK: How do you motivate yourself when you’re feeling nervous or defeated?

MS: In general, people have believed in me the entire way. Well, at least the people that I really care about have believed in me and believed that I could get to the level I am at.

SK: Do you have a skiing playlist or any particular artists/songs you like listening to when you’re on a run?

MS: "Footprints" by Sia, "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic, "Say My Name" (feat. Zyra) by ODESZA, "Daddy Lessons" by Beyoncé, "Runaway (U & I) [Svidden & Jarly Remix]" by Galantis.

Mikaela Shiffrin Instagram 2

Mikaela Shiffrin Instagram 2

SK: Where do you keep all your medals?

MS: I basically keep my gold from Sochi in my sock drawer. Don’t want it to get stolen or damaged.

SK: What athlete is your greatest source of inspiration?

MS: Michael Phelps is definitely an Olympic inspiration to me. Also Bode Miller, one of my biggest idols in my sport.

Kendall Jenner Can't Stop Low-Key Shading Sofia Richie

Kendall Jenner has never been shy about expressing her disdain for Sofia Richie. After making fun of Richie’s 15-year age difference with her boyfriend, Scott Disick, on Instagram, she took aim at Richie again. This time, jabbing her where it hurts: her dead horse.

On Saturday, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star posted an Instagram that many fans claim is shade toward the recent death of Richie’s horse, Dragon. Jenner’s Instagram featured a picture of her new horse, which she just so happened to name Dragon (although it doesn't really feel like a coincidence, does it?). “My new baby dragon,” Jenner captioned the shot.

Fans were quick to associate Jenner's post with an Instagram Richie shared in January, which paid tribute to her own horse, Dragon, who had died. “Rip to my beautiful dragon. Spent some of my happiest moments with this guy," Richie captioned her Instagram.

Given that Jenner bought a horse less than a month after Richie’s died and named it the exact same name, fans were certain she was trying to push the Richie's buttons. Of course, this isn’t the first time Jenner has taken aim at Richie. Last week, she posted a now-deleted comment on a fan-run Disick Instagram page, sarcastically complimenting his relationship. “Awww Scott and his kids,” she commented.

Last year, on KUWTK, Jenner also tried to stop Disick’s short-lived fling, Bella Thorne, from flying with him to Cannes, where they briefly hooked up. One might be able to understand why Jenner is trying to thwart Disick’s love life. For more than a decade, he dated her older sister Kourtney Kardashian, with whom he shares three kids.

As any defensive sister is, Jenner likely isn’t a fan of Disick flaunting his much-younger girlfriends in public. So she’s letting her opinion be known in the most adult way possible: Instagram shade. We’ll just sit back with our popcorn and watch the drama unfold.

Jamie Dornan Is So Over the Fifty Shades Franchise

In news that is surprising to no one, Jamie Dornan is kind of over his role in the Fifty Shades franchise. After three movies in three years, it's pretty easy to see why he'd be done being Christian Grey. But his reasoning is a little surprising. It's not because he's fatigued from filming three feature-length films in as many years or because he's looking for new acting challenges in playing new characters. It's because he's "gettin' too old."

More: Anastasia Steele Finds Her Strength in the Final Fifty Shades Freed Trailer

During a Monday appearance on Lorraine, Dornan explained that both he and costar Dakota Johnson are apparently at the age where they need to leave their onscreen S&M relationship behind.

"Unless Erica [E. L. James] keeps writing, but Dakota and I are... particularly me, I'm gettin' too old for... for this," he explained. At 35, though, Dornan looks as good as ever, so excuse us if we respectfully disagree.

More: That Fifty Shades Freed Trailer That Was Removed From the Internet Is Back

However, there's another problem: The third film is the end of the story. When asked specifically if this was his last one, Dornan replied, "Um, yeah. I think so. I don't think there's any... I mean, there's no other books. [E. L. James] wrote the first two books again from Christian's perspective, but I guess we've already seen... we've done those films, the same story, so they won't do that again."

More: Another Fifty Shades Book Is on the Way, & It Means More Christian Grey

What he's saying makes sense, but it doesn't mean we aren't a little sad to see the end come for Fifty Shades (and, specifically, Dornan as Christian Grey). Still, we're sure both Dornan and Johnson will move on to bigger and better things, and we can't wait to see what those are.

Kate Winslet & Leonardo DiCaprio Team Up to Save a Woman's Life

Further proving they are too good and pure for this Earth and we don't deserve them, Jack and Rose Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are working together right now to literally save the life of a woman with ovarian cancer. For some time, they've been raising funds to help the 28-year-old German mom, Gemma Nuttall, get an expensive immunotherapy treatment for her aggressive ovarian cancer.

What makes the story even better is that both stars have been keeping quiet about their work to help Nuttall until Winslet brought it up Monday during an appearance on This Morning.

"I lost my own mother last year in May to ovarian cancer, and we as a family were given a very poor prognosis for my mum. After a four-year battle, a really unbelievable fight, we decided to look elsewhere and we also stumbled across those places in Germany," Winslet said, talking about the treatment centers Nuttall couldn't afford to go to.

She continued, "Simultaneously, I came across a petition on change.org.uk, which was Gemma, or someone on behalf of Gemma, campaigning to have immunotherapy made available on the NHS and my heart sunk, as at that point I thought, 'This poor young woman is probably years away from her being able to access that kind of treatment on the national health service.'"

More: Leonardo DiCaprio & Kate Winslet Are on a BFF Vacation Right Now

Winslet then contacted Nuttall's mother, Helen, to see about helping them raise the money needed for a six-session treatment, which can cost nearly $100,000 per session.

"We got close to £200,000 [roughly $280,000] and I thought, ‘Right it’s time to call my friend Leo,'" Winslet recalled. "I phoned Leo and I said, ‘Do you think we could do a charity dinner or something?’ And he said, 'Let’s go one better. Come with me to St. Tropez, to my big fundraiser for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation … And we will auction off a dinner with Jack and Rose.'"

The three dinners they auctioned off ended up raising $1.35 million, which was split between paying for Nuttall's treatments and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. But Winslet isn't stopping there. She gave a statement to Us Weekly explaining that she's still working to raise money for Nuttall's future treatments.

"Gemma needs further urgent specialist cancer treatment in Germany. Without it, she will die," Winslet wrote. "I have been in communication with Gemma and her lovely mum, Helen, for a while now. And we are all so thrilled that we were able to send Gemma off to the Hallwang for her first round of treatment. I will continue to assist with her costs, but we do still badly need your donations. Join me in supporting this 28-year-old mum! Let’s truly do our best to keep her alive for her 3-year-old daughter, Penelope, who loves and needs her Mummy so much. We might be able to save her life with these desperately needed funds for this essential treatment. So spread the word out there! Let’s all tell as many people as we know, and please keep the words of support coming and the incredibly generous donations coming. Everyone deserves the best chance at life, let’s all try to help Gemma and Penelope have theirs!"

Coping With Valentine's Day During a Rough Patch

Few holidays evoke as wide a range of emotions as Valentine's Day. For some, it's the ideal day to celebrate love and plan something special with their significant other. Certain hopeless romantics aren't big fans of the commercial aspect of the holiday, and some absolutely love Galentine's Day but couldn't care less about Feb. 14.

But Valentine's Day can be an incredibly difficult holiday for many people. Whether it's due to a recent breakup, relationship problems or generalized depression, the day can be fraught with negative emotions. Luckily, coping techniques can ease some of the stress. Here's what experts have to say about handling Valentine's Day during a rough patch.

If you're not loving the single life

If you recently went through a rough breakup or have had a stretch of bad luck in the dating game, Valentine's Day is likely to bring up painful emotions — especially when it seems like everyone in your Instagram feed is celebrating the day with their special someone.

Tina Muller, family wellness manager at Mountainside Treatment Center, suggests refocusing your entire view of Valentine's Day. "The holiday symbolizes love, so take that idea and apply it to yourself. Instead of focusing on love through an intimate relationship, focus on loving and supporting yourself," Muller says. "Turn the holiday around and focus on something positive that’s going on in your life."

Keeping yourself occupied in a positive way is key. Muller suggests planning something you enjoy, such as spending time with a close friend or family member or taking a yoga class. She notes that feeling a bit lonely or sad on Valentine's Day may be unavoidable, but these emotions can be eased by "making a connection with someone, whether it be a friend or family member" and "being able to talk about how you’re feeling."

If you have depression

Some people with depression are unaffected by Valentine's Day, but for others, it can act as a trigger that intensifies the illness's symptoms. "When a person lives with depression, every day can be a struggle. Add to that the contrived, artificial hype of Valentine's Day, and it can be even harder to get out of bed," Dr. Laura Deitsch of Vibrant tells SheKnows.

Deitsch suggests tapping into your "toolkit" on Valentine's Day. "Think of the five senses: sight, taste, smell, hearing and feel," she says. "Surround yourself with things that bring you joy to look at, whether they are in your space or one you travel to."

Treat yourself to your favorite food or drink, snuggle up and listen to your favorite music, and use coping skills that you've previously discussed with your therapist.

If you recently lost a loved one

After losing a loved one, it's common for all holidays to be painful. If that loved one happened to be your significant other, Valentine's Day could shape up to be absolutely excruciating.

Michelene M. Wasil, a licensed marriage and family therapist, suggests surrounding yourself with people you love so you can seek their support if you're feeling overwhelmed. She says it can also be therapeutic to think of ways to honor your loved one. For example, visit a place you both loved and pay tribute.

"I had a client who loved to hike with his wife. The anniversary of her passing fell around Valentine's Day. I encouraged him to write a letter to her, plan a hike with a friend, and leave the letter at the viewpoint of their favorite spot," Wasil tells SheKnows. This activity was healing for her client, and he told Wasil that he plans to do it every Valentine's Day.

If you & your partner are coping with something difficult

We often associate Valentine's Day struggles with people who are single — but it can also place stress on individuals who are in relationships. For example, Dr. Georgia Witkin, director of patient services development at Progyny, tells SheKnows that the holiday can be tough on couples who are struggling to conceive. Whether your shared stressor is fertility, finances or family, Witkin says that Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to "take a break from worrying" by sharing some quality time together.

She suggests playing a favorite game, looking at photos from the early days of your relationship or simply getting in the car and going out for ice cream. Witkin also notes that music can be a great stress reliever — and sometimes an aphrodisiac.

"Play your favorite songs from when you and your partner started dating. If the music is a song faster than your heartbeat, it's energizing, so get up and dance!" she says. "If it's slower than your heartbeat, it's relaxing, so share a massage or bath. If you start with the little expressions of affection, sex often follows naturally."

In an ideal world, holidays wouldn't be triggering, but unfortunately, that's not the case for a lot of people. If that's the case for you, remember to take care of yourself.

5 Facts About Stephen Hawking That Weren't in The Theory of Everything

If you saw 2014's The Theory of Everything and didn't cry, you might not be human. I mean, come on, Stephen and Jane Hawking's story is both gut-wrenching and inspirational — it has all the makings of a total blubber-fest.

Buuuuuut, it didn't exactly tell the whole truth about Stephen Hawking's life. Rather, it gave a small snippet of it. The focus of the film is on Stephen and Jane's relationship, and it leaves out some other very important facts about one of the world's greatest minds.

The Theory of Everything is still a must-see, but we can't help but want to round out a couple of other things about Hawking.

1. Stephen Hawking's marriage to his second wife also ended in divorce

The Theory of Everything depicts the challenging marriage between Stephen (Eddie Redmayne) and Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones). Eventually, the couple divorced and Stephen married his nurse, Elaine Mason (Maxine Peake). Stephen and Elaine divorced in 2006, after 11 years of marriage.

2. Elaine has been alleged of abusing him

In 2003, Stephen Hawking's own daughter, Lucy, reported mysterious injuries on her father to the police. According to the Daily Mail, "Prof Hawking declined to explain how his injuries had come about. A number of his former nurses, however, were in no doubt. They alleged that over the years his wife inflicted a catalogue of injuries on the vulnerable scientist: fractured his wrist by slamming it on to his wheelchair; humiliated him by refusing him access to a urine bottle, leaving him to wet himself; gashed his cheek with a razor, allowed him to slip beneath the water while in the bath, ensuring water entered the tracheotomy site in his throat; and left him alone in his garden during the hottest day of the year so long that he suffered heatstroke and severe sunburn."

3. He believes in aliens & is afraid of them

On the Discovery Channel show, Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking, the astrophysicist said through his computer-generated voice that, "If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach. To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational."

4. He loves strippers

According to the Daily Beast, "Hawking became a regular at Stringfellows strip club in London." The scientist has also reportedly been "spotted numerous times getting lap dances at the California strip club Devore, and was even said to have frequented Freedom Acres, a swinger's club in California."

5. Jane & Stephen Hawking are polar opposites

While Stephen came from a highly intellectual family that some even called eccentric, Jane Wilde came from less academically minded parents. Her choice to attend university back in the 1960s was considered to be quite bold because she was a woman. However, it's this polarity in the relationship that really sparked Eddie Redmayne's interest. "They were very different people, both extraordinary yet polar opposites. The idea of two human beings completing one another and defying all the odds I found compelling — and oh, was it romantic!" said Redmayne.

The Theory of Everything is available at Amazon and iTunes. Eddie Redmayne won an Oscar for his performance in the film.

What to Deduct From Your Taxes When You're Pregnant

$
0
0

Being pregnant and having a baby is expensive — between medical bills, supplies and, you know, actually raising a human being, costs really add up. But hold onto those receipts, because a lot of the necessities you're spending on are tax-deductible. (Although the rules below will be subject to change with the new tax bill coming into effect next year, they're still applicable for 2017 tax returns.)

What's tax-deductible & what's not

The Internal Revenue Service allows a deduction for medical expenses — including preggo expenses — for taxpayers who itemize on a Schedule A.

You can deduct qualified medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income for the year according to TurboTax. What's your adjusted gross income? It's your taxable income minus any adjustments to income, such as deductions, contributions to a traditional IRA and student loan interest.

So, if you have a modified adjusted gross income of $30,000 and have $8,000 in medical expenses, you would multiple $30,000 by 0.10 (10 percent) to find that only expenses exceeding $3,000 can be deducted. This leaves you with a medical expense deduction of $5,000 ($8,000 - $3,000).

What are qualifying medical expenses? Generally, qualifying medical expenses include preventative care, treatment, surgeries (such as a C-section) and dental and vision care.

Doctor's visits

If you are seeing an OB-GYN throughout your pregnancy, one thing you can count on is a lot of doctor's appointments. The cost of your visits is deductible to the extent that you pay out of pocket; any costs that are reimbursed to you or are paid by your insurer are not deductible.

Also deductible? The cost of getting to and from those visits, whether by car, public transit or taxi — and even parking. You’ll need to be able to document these expenses, though, so get receipts and keep good records (a mileage log is particularly helpful if you drive to your medical appointments).

Tests

Even with a normal, healthy pregnancy, you'll be getting some tests done — including blood work and the glucose tolerance test. These are also deductible as long as they are ordered by your doctor as part of your prenatal care. Similarly, tests to determine potential birth defects or other abnormalities, including maternal serum tests, hCG testing, chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis are also deductible.

During the later stages of pregnancy and during labor, your doctor may order fetal heart monitoring to check the rate and rhythm of the fetal heartbeat. Again, as long as these tests are ordered by a doctor for medical reasons, they are tax-deductible.

More: Pregnant? Skip the Licorice, Say Experts

Ultrasounds

Your doctor will also usually schedule an ultrasound between 18 to 20 weeks to check the growth of the fetus and the location of the placenta and to determine any potential problems. The cost of this ultrasound, to the extent it's not covered by health insurance, would be deductible as a medical expense.

Around that same 18- to 20-week mark, it’s also sometimes possible to determine the sex of your baby. Of course, depending upon how cooperative said baby is, the ultrasound may be inconclusive. Since most medical professionals will only prescribe an ultrasound when it's medically necessary, it’s generally unlikely that your doctor will schedule another ultrasound simply to determine the baby's sex.

Some parents are, of course, pretty anxious to find out the sex and may schedule a private ultrasound outside their regular medical care. Know that you may not deduct the cost of a private ultrasound like this if it is not deemed a medically necessary part of prenatal care. The same rule applies to those extra ultrasounds, such as the 4-D, which parents often request just for fun (and photos).

Maternity clothes

As your pregnancy progresses, you'll likely need a few different (i.e., bigger) clothing items. But even though maternity clothes are often a pretty necessary part of being pregnant, they are specifically excluded as a deduction by the IRS. *Sigh*

Extra help

As your pregnancy progresses, you may also find you are in need of extra assistance around the house. You cannot deduct the cost of household help such as a cleaner — nope, not even if such help is recommended by a doctor. It’s still considered a "personal expense" that is not tax-deductible. However, to the extent that your doctor orders actual nursing care for you in-home, those expenses are indeed deductible.

And despite the obvious dilemma facing parents of small children who are about to have yet another baby, you cannot include when deducting "medical expenses" the amounts that you pay for the care of children, even if those expenses are strictly to allow you to go the doctor or to the hospital for medical care.

Childbirth classes

You can deduct the cost of preparing for delivery via childbirth classes. Again, to the extent that you are reimbursed by your insurance company (many will give you a refund if you attend a certain number of classes), you must exclude the reimbursement from your overall medical expenses.

Supplies

What about supplies for your new baby? Effective as of the 2010 tax year, the IRS has ruled that taxpayers may use pretax dollars in their FSAs (flexible spending accounts) to cover the cost of breastfeeding supplies. If you don’t have an FSA, breastfeeding supplies are considered deductible as a medical expense. Breastfeeding supplies or “supplies that assist lactation” include breast pumps, bottles and pads.

However, be careful: Infant formula is not deductible, even if you can’t (or don’t wish to) breastfeed. The IRS considers infant formula to be nutrition, like food for grown-ups, and therefore it's not deductible.

Other supplies — such as diapers (or the cost of a diaper service), diaper cream and baby shampoo — are likewise not deductible. They are considered personal supplies rather than medical.

And of course, once you go into labor, the cost of the hospital stay, doctor and nursing care, medications, ultrasounds and other monitoring are all considered medical expenses for the purpose of claiming a deduction. Even if you opt to use a birthing center, the same rules apply.

And at the end of the whole pregnancy and birth process, you get a little bundle of joy... and an extra personal tax exemption!
