Victims' Father Attempts to Attack Larry Nassar in Court

Randall Margraves, the father of three girls who were sexually abused by Larry Nassar, tried to leap over the court desk and attack Nassar on Friday after a judge denied Margraves' request for five minutes alone with him.

Margraves spoke to the public after he was released from a holding cell, explaining that he reacted the way he did after hearing his daughters, Lauren and Madison, detail their experiences with Nassar in front of the court at the sentencing hearing.

"I want to make it real clear that I am no hero. My daughters are the heroes, and all the victims and the survivors of this terrible atrocity," Margraves said. "This morning, I got up with the full intention to go to work. I was gonna stop by the courthouse for support. I knew my daughters were gonna make an impact statement. I did not know the content in the impact statement. We went to the podium, Sherri — their mother — and myself, in support of the two daughters. When I had to hear what was said in those statements, and I have to look over at Larry Nassar shaking his head, that's when I lost control."

He added, "I'm not advocating that everyone should do that, I feel very remorseful, very apologetic, I was embarrassed. I thank Judge Cunningham and all the court system for their leniency on me. This cannot be a lawless society — I know that. I lost control, but I regained control later, in a holding cell."

"I will tell you that I believe in God Almighty, I believe in Heaven and Hell, and I can only hope when the day comes that Larry Nassar has ended his days on this earth that he will be escorted to one of the deepest, darkest, hottest pits in Hell there is, for him and people like him. I hope there's a lot of pain attached to it, because he's certainly left a lot of pain here on this earth," Margraves concluded.

Earlier this week, Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison.

Prior to the attempted attack, NBC News reports Margraves asked the court for permission to speak and then proceeded to ask Judge Janice Cunningham for "five minutes in a locked room with this demon."

The judge stumbled with the unexpected response but ultimately denied Margraves' request, saying, "You know that I can't do that."

But Margraves was apparently in such a fit of emotion, he couldn't take no for an answer.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to have food from your favorite restaurant. It will probably be hectic with the number of couples heading out for the evening, which is why getting takeout might be a good alternative. If you don’t mind the chaos, have a meal by yourself and enjoy it.

There’s nothing to say you can’t take yourself out, but if you’re anything like me and would prefer to eat at home, why not cook yourself something delicious? You could try something new, like roasted red pepper fettuccine with creamy feta sauce or something fun, like mini heart pizzas. Don’t forget to make yourself some sort of dessert too. Chocolate-covered strawberry hearts and no-bake Valentine’s Day snack mix are good options.

Get yourself in the mood

This one is pretty self-explanatory — do whatever it is you like to do to put yourself in the mood for a little, or even a lot, of self-love. After all, this night is about celebrating yourself. Kylie Jenner Apologizes to Fans While Announcing the Birth of Her Baby Girl

Fans of Kylie Jenner spent the better part of 2017 speculating over one big mystery: is she, or isn't she? Since rumors first began floating around that Jenner could be pregnant, everyone has been on baby bump alert. And while Jenner did an excellent job keeping her expanding belly under wraps, the secret is finally out — on Feb. 1, she gave birth to a baby girl.

But Jenner didn't just take to social media to reveal the joyous news. The 20-year-old Keeping Up with the Kardashians star and cosmetics mogul wanted to share something else with fans as well: an apology.

In an Instagram post, Jenner broke the news of her daughter's birth while also saying sorry to her loyal fans. "I'm sorry for keeping you in the dark through all the assumptions. I understand you're used to me bringing you along on all my journeys," Jenner began.

"My pregnancy was one I chose not to do in front of the world. I knew for myself I needed to prepare for this role of a lifetime in the most positive, stress-free, and healthy way I knew how," she continued. "There was no gotcha moment, no big paid reveal I had planned. I knew my baby would feel every stress and every emotion, so I chose to do it this way for my little life and our happiness."

Jenner went on to call pregnancy "the most beautiful, empowering, and life-changing experience" of her life before dropping the official baby bomb. "My beautiful and healthy baby girl arrived February 1, and I just couldn't wait to share this blessing. I've never felt love and happiness like this. I could burst! Thank you for understanding."

Then in celebration of the baby girl and, presumably, to give fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into what has actually been going on for the last nine months, Jenner shared a video simply titled "To Our Daughter." Spoiler alert? It's a total tearjerker.

Jenner's older sis Khloé Kardashian, who is also expecting, congratulated the new mother with an Instagram post of her own. Pink Powers Through the Flu to Slay the National Anthem at Super Bowl LII

When most people are sick, they hunker down at home beneath a dozen blankets, clutching their meds and a tissue box. But then again, Pink isn't most people — and the quintessential rock star proved it when she took the mic at Super Bowl LII to sing the heck out of the national anthem, despite struggling with the flu.

A Philadelphia native, Pink doesn't shy away from her Eagles fandom. So, when she found out her hometown team made it to the Super Bowl, she was understandably thrilled at the possibility of kicking off the big game.

Until, that is, raising tiny humans took its toll.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Pink shared a photo of herself bundled up on the field during rehearsal "trying to practice the flu away."

She went on to explain, "I've been waiting to sing this song since 1991 when I saw my idol, Whitney Houston, own this song. And now, my chance has finally come. And it just so happens that this chance comes when I have two small Petri dish kids who literally cough INTO MY MOUTH and rub their snot on my cheek. You can't write this stuff I swear!"

Despite the sickly setback, though, Pink couldn't help but gush about the experience — and the little germ harbingers that helped turn one of her dreams into "a sort of nightmare."

"I will tell you, this is one of the biggest honors of my life, singing this song in front of my family, my military family, my dad, and brother and step mama and family and the world. If it's a contest, babies, you win."

Aw, can Pink be president yet? That's a presidential nomination we could get behind. Until then, we'll happily settle for watching her conquer any hurdles, which is precisely what she did at the Super Bowl.

Delivering a stellar rendition of the national anthem, Pink wowed the crowd and her fans — including fellow celebrities, who gushed over the performance on Twitter.

"#SuperBowl52 @Pink just killed it! Best I've ever heard!" Sheryl Crow exclaimed.

John Stamos & Caitlin McHugh Didn't Let a Robbery Ruin Their Wedding Day

A robbery couldn't stand in the way of John Stamos' love for Caitlin McHugh — the happy couple tied the knot this weekend, mere hours after McHugh's bungalow at the Beverly Hills hotel was broken into and burglarized.

To add insult to injury, the thieves made off with a sizable collection of jewelry that McHugh planned to wear down the aisle. The burgled baubles, on loan from the Neil Lane Collection, were worth around $165,000. So far, no suspects have been identified in the heist.

Still, Stamos and McHugh didn't let the unfortunate experience ruin their big day. On Saturday, the couple said "I do" in front of a small crowd of 50 close friends and family. According to E! News, the ceremony was held at Little Brown Church in Studio City. Afterwards, they cruised in a classic Rolls Royce to a reception at Stamos' Beverly Hills home.

In keeping with the day's cozy vibe, the couple had lounge chairs and rugs splayed all over Stamos' backyard to encourage guests to relax. White rose petals floated in the pool, near which a grand piano and drum set were set up.

The big day tips off what is certain to be a joy-filled year for Stamos and McHugh, who announced in December 2017 that they are expecting their first child. "Maybe we should have a kid [before we get married] and I said, 'Why?'" Stamos told People of the pair's decision to start a family, revealing that McHugh playfully responded, "Because you're old."

The couple enjoyed a short engagement, with Stamos having popped the question to McHugh during a dreamy Disneyland proposal in October 2017. The actor broke the news on Instagram, writing, "I asked...she said yes! ...And we lived happily ever after."

This Is Us Finally Told Us How Jack Died, & We're Not OK

Well, it happened. It finally happened after one-and-a-half seasons of watching on pins and needles worried for Jack Pearson's safety. Right after Super Bowl LII on Sunday night, NBC decided to break our hearts, so full of love with the Philadelphia Eagles' big win, by revealing to us the awful truth about how Jack died on This Is Us.

It was a crushing reveal, partially because the way he died wasn't at all in the way we were being led to believe he had died. Sure, the Crock-Pot was the cause of the fire that led to this whole tragedy, but sadly, Jack didn't actually die in the house. In fact, I'd argue his death was way worse because it happened just when we thought he was safe and sound. Curse you, This Is Us!

So, Jack made it safely out of the house with the family's (but really Kate's) dog in tow. The house Jack built for his family was totaled by one lousy Crock-Pot with a faulty switch, but that was OK, because Jack and his family were OK. Or so we thought.

While at the hospital getting checked out for burns and other health concerns, Rebecca gets up to go grab something to eat, and while at the vending machine gets the terrible news from the doctor. While being treated for his burns, Jack went into cardiac arrest as a result of severe smoke inhalation in the fire. It happened while Rebecca stepped out of the room for just a moment. It was news Rebecca seemed pretty incredulous about when she was first notified.

Watching Rebecca handle the news of Jack's death is basically how all of us felt while watching it. Like, really? Smoke inhalation? So, This Is Us, you mean to tell me that after weeks of teasing a crummy Crock-Pot with faulty wiring and a smoke detector with no batteries and then a heroic rescue from Jack where he makes it out of the house he just...dies from smoke inhalation. He's just gone?

It was such a gut-punch of a moment and basically horrible to watch. But now we know the awful truth and we may need a week to recover. Luckily, others — including This Is Us' Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore — know how we feel and are here to console us.

What Aly Raisman Wants You to Know About Periods & Speaking Out Against Abuse

Over the past several weeks, gymnast Aly Raisman has become more than an Olympic gold medalist. Following her testimony against former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, she also became one of the most powerful voices in the #MeToo movement, speaking out on behalf of her teammates and people everywhere who have been the victims of sexual abuse. Now, Raisman, 23, is lending her voice to another important cause — menstrual equity; specifically, encouraging athletic facilities to provide period products for attendees and competitors alike.

She recently teamed up with Playtex Sport for their #PlayOn campaign, which encourages menstruators not to let their periods get in the way of their lives. According to Raisman, 75 percent of teenage girls stop playing sports or exercising when they have their period.

"That is just devastating and crazy to me,” she tells SheKnows. “So for me, it’s really important to try and normalize the conversation so that young girls don’t feel embarrassed about their period. We all get our period, so we might as well talk about it.”

And these conversations shouldn’t be limited to girls. Raisman says we should involve boys in these discussions so they too are familiar with the basic biological process and “so that when girls are in class, they don’t feel uncomfortable getting up and going to the bathroom.”

To help destigmatize the conversation surrounding periods and make products accessible to people who menstruate in different environments, Playtex Sport has placed tampon vending machines at sports arenas at the University of Texas and University of Connecticut as well as at the Chelsea Piers sports complex in New York City. Although Raisman says she’s “paranoid” and always carries her own period products with her at all times, she thinks the vending machines are great because they show people not to be embarrassed if they have their period and are out in public.

And like so many other people who menstruate, Raisman’s period can be pretty uncomfortable, but she has a strategy for getting through the week. “When I get my period, I usually feel pretty sick,” she says. “I get stomachaches, cramps, my back hurts, my hips hurt, so when I work out, I actually feel better.” 

Although it can be easy to let your period get in the way of doing what you love, Raisman stresses that this shouldn’t be the case. “There are days when you want to lay in bed all day and you don’t want to get up,” she says. “But the best thing is to get moving.” When Raisman herself has her period, she’s not just moving — she’s doing gymnastics in a leotard, which she says makes it hard if you’re running to the bathroom but don’t have anywhere to put a tampon.

Raisman also wants young menstruators in particular to know that fluctuating weight is all part of growing up. “I think nobody really talks about how when you get your period as a young girl you do put on weight because your body’s changing to become a woman — which is totally normal — but I think there are so many messages telling young girls to be skinny, to not put on weight, and we have to change that,” she says. “So we have to talk about that your body is going to change, and that’s OK… Everyone is unique in their own way, and we have to stop putting so much pressure on women and girls to look this ideal, perfect body type.”

In addition to educating boys on the basics of biology, Raisman believes it's important to include fathers in conversations on periods and puberty. “Going through puberty is a very vulnerable time, and I think it’s important that dads are also supportive of their kids going through puberty and being there for them,” she says. “Even though it’s an uncomfortable conversation, we have to talk about it. Often, the uncomfortable conversations are the ones that need to be had the most.”

And, as the world knows by now, Raisman is no stranger to uncomfortable conversations. As one of the most vocal gymnasts on the topic of the sexual abuse at the hands of Nassar, she knows all about talking about difficult topics.

“It’s something that it’s very hard to not go public about it, and it’s very hard to go public about it,” she explains. “I think people really don’t understand that when you don’t go public with it, it’s very difficult. But when you do go public with it, it’s not [as thought] it’s just like weight is lifted off your shoulders. It’s very hard to talk about still.”

Ultimately, Raisman says she decided to go public because she wants to be part of the shift toward a culture of believing survivors. “I think our society is finally listening and believing that abuse is far more common than we allow ourselves to think,” she says. “It’s horrifically common. So I want change.” 

Specifically, Raisman wants to help educate younger generations, starting when they're first learning how to talk — to arm them with the language and tools to recognize and speak up about abuse and grooming techniques (the process through which an adult builds an emotional connection with a child to gain their trust for the purposes of abuse). She wants to teach them that people they trust — or even love — could be hurting them.

“When I was younger, I assumed that it could only be a stranger that was hurting me, so even though the doctor was mistreating me and so many others, I just thought he was a doctor,” Raisman explains. “I thought he was weird, but I never imagined he would be a monster and he would be in jail for the rest of his life. So we just have to continue that dialogue. It’s very, very important.”

It wasn’t until a private investigator hired by USA Gymnastics came to Raisman’s house to ask about Nassar that it really started to sink in that she — as well as her teammates — had endured years of abuse. “When [the investigator] was asking me questions about his behavior and I went in and spoke about it with my mom and I was very confused,” she says, adding that she had been “brainwashed and manipulated” by Nassar.

Initially, Raisman says she was “making excuses for Larry,” which is typical behavior for survivors of abuse because the abusers are master manipulators. “For so long, because Larry was a doctor, I just always thought he was very off, but I didn’t think he was harming me, because for so long everyone was saying he was the best doctor."

Nassar would bring her gifts and was kind to her, thoroughly convincing Raisman that he cared about her. “I want everyone to know that just because someone is nice to you — just because everyone thinks that they’re a great person, it doesn’t mean that they are."

As far as advice for other survivors of abuse, Raisman says that she hopes they have the courage to come forward and tell someone they trust.

“Remember that you are important. You matter. Your story matters, and you deserve to be safe,” she says. “I know it’s not easy, but I hope that they know that their abusers are cowards. They are horrible people and they should be exposed for the evil that they are. It’s not easy to come forward — it never, ever is — but hopefully they know that when they are ready, there is a full army of people ready to support them.”

Women will have a strong showing at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Not only are 107 of the 242 athletes women, but they are also the most diverse group in the history of the games.

Of course, it's hard to pick just 10 women worth watching when all 107 have their own unique stories and histories that make them Olympic-worthy, but the ladies on our list are poised for gold and already history makers. They have overcome injuries, risen above the odds, shrugged off failures and now have their eyes on gold. As fate would have it, Kim's parents are immigrants from South Korea, which she described to People as "some crazy luck."

3. Maia Shibutani

Ice dancer Maia Shubutani is a force in the couples portion of the competition with her brother, Alex Shibutani. Together, they are known as "the Shib Sibs." They finished ninth at Sochi, but that doesn't mean they aren't going to have a strong showing at Pyeongchang. They placed first in the 2016 and 2017 national championships.

4. Jamie Anderson

After she absolutely slayed her performance of the national anthem at Sunday's Super Bowl, Pink probably should have been able to just take some time to bask in the love she was getting from pretty much everyone who watched the show. After all, she managed that show-stopping performance even through a nasty case of the flu. Just to give you a sense of how amazing that is, when I have the flu, I stay in bed and whine and watch Grey's Anatomy; Pink has the flu and she delivered a stunning rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in front of millions of people.

But there's always that one person who has to ruin the moment, especially with a cutting remark on the internet. On Sunday night, that person showed up in Pink's Twitter mentions, writing, "If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 1000 times. Pink sucks and if you like her singing you’re dumb." He probably didn't expect his tweet to catch her eye, but it did. And boy, did she have the clapback for him.

The "lady-friendly" version of the chips will reportedly make less of a crunch noise when eaten. As far as the packaging goes, the bags will be specifically designed to fit inside one's purse. "Because women love to carry a snack in their purse," Indra Nooyi, global chief executive at PepsiCo, said in an interview with Freakonomics Radio.

So let's get this straight: We'll pay the same amount as men but for a smaller bag? Oh, boy; that's fantastic. It's everything we've been fighting for!

Nooyi continues to say women don't want to lick their fingers when eating chips like men do. OK, now mentally prepare yourself for the following quote...

"When you eat out of a flex bag — one of our single-serve bags — especially as you watch a lot of the young guys eat the chips, they love their Doritos, and they lick their fingers with great glee, and when they reach the bottom of the bag they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth, because they don't want to lose that taste of the flavor, and the broken chips in the bottom," Nooyi explained.

"Women would love to do the same, but they don't," she continues. "They don't like to crunch too loudly in public. And they don't lick their fingers generously and they don't like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth."

Why We're Conflicted About Pink's Super Bowl Performance

For many viewers, the most suspenseful part of the Super Bowl wasn't which team would come out on top, but whether Pink would be well enough to perform the national anthem at the game. Like so many Americans, Pink came down with the flu, so for a while, it was up in the air whether she would be able to sing the event's opening song.

Spoiler: She did perform, and against all flu-related odds, she sounded amazing. But was that really the best idea?

On Saturday, Pink posted a photo of herself rehearsing with the caption: "Trying to practice to flu away." She goes on to write that she had been waiting to perform the national anthem since 1991 when she saw her idol, Whitney Houston, "own the song."

Adding to the drama was the fact that Pink is a native of Philadelphia and was asked to sing at the very Super Bowl the Eagles not only made it to but also ended up winning. Naturally, the mother of two was less than thrilled when a lifelong dream was jeopardized because she came down with the flu.

"I have two small Petri dish kids who literally cough INTO MY MOUTH and rub their snot on my cheek," Pink wrote on Instagram. "You can’t write this stuff I swear!"

To recap: Pink caught the flu from her contagious children, then performed at one of the largest sporting events in the country with thousands of people in attendance. (And again, to reiterate, she absolutely killed it — her performance isn't the issue.) 

Did she pass her germs onto the audience by opening her mouth and singing? Definitely not, but she likely did come into contact with plenty of behind-the-scenes handlers, tech operators and other staff, who hopefully washed their hands frequently.

Granted, these are extreme circumstances: Pink performing at the Super Bowl when her hometown team is playing isn't quite the same thing as dragging your sick self to the office to attend a meeting, but it doesn't set the best example. People may look at Pink and think they can power through work — or whatever events are on the calendar — with the flu too. Possibly even more damaging is that employers — you know, the types that never believe you're ever really sick — could use this as an excuse to encourage ill employees to work through it.

On top of that, there has recently, finally, been a long-overdue cultural pivot toward focusing on self-care and allowing people — especially women, universal nurturers and caretakers — to take the time to get better when they're sick instead of being "strong" and continuing to put other people and responsibilities first.

No one is disputing that Pink is an incredibly talented vocalist, wonderful mother, limber acrobat and all-round badass. We only hope that everyone who is sick with the flu, including Pink, will take the time they need to rest and recuperate — and ideally avoid events with massive crowds.

1. The first modern Olympics took place in 1896

The Olympics themselves have been around for a really long time — written records in Greece date the games back to 776 B.C., but it's believed they had even been going on for years before that date. Athletic competitions took place every four years near Olympia, Greece, during a religious festival honoring Zeus. But after these ancient Olympic Games faltered, the idea was revived in 1896 in Athens, and the event featured around 280 athletes (all male, booo) who hailed from 13 countries and competed in 43 events.

2. The five interlocking rings of the Olympic flag represent the "five" continents

Yep, we were confused too. The Olympic flag's rings, which first flew at the 1920 Antwerp Games, represent "the five continents" of America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. The North and South American continents are represented by one ring, and Antarctica misses out since its frosty inhabitants (mostly scientists and penguins) haven't put together an Olympic team...Yet.

3. The U.S. has won the most medals throughout all of Olympic history

There's got to be something about economic privilege behind this, right? But anyway, the United States' nearly 2,800-medal total does lag behind Norway when it comes to overall medals awarded during the Winter Olympics. How will Team USA fare this year? Only time will tell.

4. The Olympics has a mascot

This year, it's a cute white tiger named Soohorang. The white tiger has been considered Korea's guardian animal, which makes it the perfect choice for Pyeongchang. Also, "Sooho" means "protection" in Korean, and the other part of his name, "rang," comes from the middle letter of the Korean word for "tiger."

5. This is the second time South Korea has hosted the Olympics

The Olympics are returning to South Korea for the first time since 1988, when the Summer Games were held in Seoul.

6. Gold medals aren't solid gold — not by a long shot

7. Women were first allowed to participate in the Olympics in 1900

The first Olympics were dudes-only, but women have been working their way into — and winning — events since then. But it's been a slow process. Women weren't allowed to participate in volleyball and luge until 1964, and we couldn't participate in weight lifting until 2000, believe it or not. As for female boxers? They weren't allowed to compete in their sport in the Olympics until 2012. Damn, Olympics, get with it!

8. The Olympic torch is well-traveled

Although the route varies depending on the year's host country, the well-known tradition of the Olympic torch remains much the same this year as it works its way through 17 cities and provinces across South Korea. Each host country is responsible for designing its torch, and it must remain lit in all weather conditions.

9. Five athletes have won medals at both the Summer & Winter Games

It's a huge milestone to win an Olympic medal — and winning more than one is an even greater feat. But winning a medal at both the Summer and Winter Games? Truly unusual. Out of the thousands of Olympic athletes, only five have done so. Among the five are two Americans: Eddie Eagan (boxing and bobsled, both gold) and Lauryn Williams (relay gold, 100-meter silver and bobsled silver).

10. The Pyeongchang Olympics will take place across 13 different venues

It's not uncommon for host cities to renovate or create new buildings for the Olympic Games, and this year, Pyeongchang has built six new venues from the ground up — and has refurbished seven others specifically for the Games.

5 Ways to Tell if Your Job Is Making You Sick — Literally

Sloane was just out of business school when she took her first job as a marketing director for what she thought was an awesome boutique cosmetics brand, but she later discovered that the company was completely dysfunctional, she says. The core tenets and leadership style native to her workplace were adversely affecting her health — the stress of it all had even manifested physically.

“There was insane infighting among the management, and the women in charge were downright mean,” she explains. “I made the mistake of speaking up about it to HR, and they forced me out of my job and left me to find another position somewhere else within the organization.” 

Sloane says she was always a star performer at work so she couldn’t believe that, in essence, she’d been fired. It was ultimately one of the most stressful experiences of her life, and it was one that took a toll on her skin.

“Suddenly, I broke out in miserably itchy hives all over my body,” she remembers. “I was covered in them, and they wouldn’t go away. They lasted nine weeks. I tried everything: antibiotics, seven doctors and tons of steroids that gave me moon face.”

Finally, she'd tried acupuncture and Chinese herbs; the hives started to go away the very next day, but it was a long, enduring journey.

Sloane eventually landed a new job with "some of the best people" she's ever worked with, but not before she’d learned that poor leadership, catty coworkers and an overall corrupt office culture could make one sick — literally. And hives like Sloane’s aren’t the only side effect of negative vibes at work.

“The main reason we might actually start to feel physically ill by being [stuck in bad jobs] is that the amount of stress they put us through ends up manifesting itself in the form of illness or ailments — and the reason why we start to feel ill after being exposed to stress for too long is because our body releases specific hormones to help us deal with stress when we encounter it,” explains Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics. “When we stress, our body releases a mixture of cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine to help increase our heart rate and allow us to deal with the stressful events as they occur (i.e., fight or flight mode). While this ‘survival mode’ has allowed us to survive for thousands of years as a species, it’s not something we would want to have to experience every single day.” 

Backe urges employees not to normalize things that are unacceptable — that’s considered “Stockholm Syndrome,” he says, and it’s something we should all avoid at all costs, especially at our places of work. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. workers experience unfavorable working conditions according to a 2015 survey by RAND. Another study conducted in the U.K. also found that there were more physical markers of stress in people who went from being unemployed to working in a bad job than in those who just remained unemployed.

It’s crucial, then, to be aware of the ways your workplace might be making you sick so you can find ways to combat them or look for employment elsewhere. Here are five more side effects on which to keep a close eye.

1. You have a weakened immune system

Scientists have been studying the many ways stress weakens the immune system since the early 1980s when psychologist Janice Kiecolt-Glaser and immunologist Ronald Glaser of the Ohio State University College of Medicine first started looking at links between stress and infection in medical students. The students’ immunity suffered every year from 1982 to 1992 under the stress test of a three-day exam period — they had fewer natural killer cells, which fight tumors and viral infections; they almost entirely stopped producing immunity-boosting gamma interferon; and infection-fighting T-cells responded only weakly to test-tube stimulation. This study opened the floodgates for more research in the subject area.

By 2004, Suzanne Segerstrom of the University of Kentucky and Gregory Miller of the University of British Columbia had nearly 300 studies on stress to review for their meta-analysis, which ultimately concluded that long-term or chronic stress can indeed ravage the immune system. For stress of any duration, however, all aspects of immunity consistently decline.

“If your work inhibits your ability to sleep, immune systems can dampen and recovery times can lengthen,” explains Zach Cordell, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Cordell Nutrition Consulting. “Along with these, when individuals are tired, judgment is impaired and food choices are influenced. Some may state that your willpower is lessened, and as a result, you make poorer food choices.”

Of course, poor food choices can further weaken the immune system because the body needs nutrients to perform optimally.

“Since we spend most of our time at work, this constant bombardment of stress can definitely lead to poor immunity and the increased risk of being sick,” agreed registered dietitian nutritionist Jeanette Kimszal. “Constant stress can lead to increased cortisol production. This also affects a rise in insulin leading to elevated blood sugar. There is constant stress on the pancreas to constantly produce blood sugar and cells become insulin-resistant if they are not able to take in all the excess insulin in the blood stream. What can result is weakened immunity, weight gain, thyroid issues and diabetes.”

2. You experience gastrointestinal problems

“Stress has such a profound impact on our immune systems that sufferers may experience a wide array of symptoms — one of the most common and dangerous outcomes of stress is the effect it has on the stomach and GI tract,” Backe explains. “Besides... weight problems and diarrhea, stress can cause extremely painful ulcers.”

According to Everyday Health, digestion is controlled by the enteric nervous system, which is composed of hundreds of millions of nerves that communicate with the central nervous system. The flight-or-fight mode in your central nervous system is activated with stress and shuts down blood flow, which can actually shut down digestion since the blood flow affects the contractions of your digestive muscles. Stress can also cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal system, which can make you more susceptible to infection.

3. You experience cognitive dysfunction

“Being in a bad job can adversely affect a person's cognitive abilities in that he or she can have decreased concentration, be more distracted, can make more mistakes or errors, miss things, etc.,” explains Yvonne Thomas, a licensed psychologist.

A study that conducted reading, pattern and memory tests in more than 6,000 workers over 40 years old found that the number of hours worked each week affects a person’s cognitive ability. It’s therefore no surprise that if you were to add stress to those hours, it’d affect a person’s brain function even more. People who work odd hours or overtime in demanding jobs are also affected more than others.

4. You start having anxiety or depression

“Examples of some emotional consequences of being in a toxic kind of job include low self-esteem, decreased self-confidence, diminished motivation, anxiety, depression, feelings of helplessness and/or hopelessness, chronic anger and not feeling valued and/or a part of the team,” Thomas adds. “People tend to have the highest job satisfaction and a business tends to operate at its best when each employee feels he or she is contributing something of value to the company and works as part of a team cooperatively. When either or both of these are not allowed or experienced in one's job, it can destroy a person's morale, confidence and efforts.” 

“I have seen people who get anxiety and lose sleep due to work stress,” adds licensed clinical social worker Hillary Marshall. “I have seen people who have had to go to the doctor's and considered going on medication to cope with work stress. I have seen people who have had to go on workers comp after being bullied by coworkers, asking for help from the boss and not receiving the needed support from the boss.”

5. You have unintended weight loss or gain

“Across the board, I have found that being in a ‘bad job’ tends to negatively affect a person's self-esteem, self-confidence and job motivation, regardless of what the industry or person's position is,” Thomas explains. “Unfortunately, the impact of being in a bad job, whether due to a bad boss, coworkers and/or office culture, can affect a person physically, emotionally and cognitively. Some physical symptoms a person can have include over- or under-sleeping, over- or under-eating, unintended weight gain or weight loss, feeling physically sluggish or physically tense, getting sick more frequently, suffering from headaches, backaches, gastrointestinal problems, etc.”

Excessive weight gain can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer and depression. And extreme or rapid weight loss can also create physical demands on the body. Risks include gallstones, which occur in 12 to 25 percent of people losing large amounts of weight over several months, and dehydration.

To say people's feelings about Justin Timberlake's Super Bowl LII Halftime Show performance are complicated would be understating it. There's no question the performance was underwhelming, and it wasn't exactly what we were expecting from the man who had recently put out a new album and had spent weeks hyping up his return to the Super Bowl doing a totally solo show (in previous years he was joined by artists like Britney Spears and NSYNC). Timberlake played things very safe on that stage, choosing to go through his greatest hits from "Cry Me a River" to "Can't Stop the Feeling" while surrounded by dancers — all very on brand for JT. But if you could see the reactions from the crowd in the stadium, not on the field itself, then you would have seen that all this pomp and circumstance fell on deaf ears.

Many wondered before Timberlake took the stage whether Jackson would make an appearance alongside him. Inviting her onstage would have been a solid step toward making things right, though it's not really surprising it didn't happen considering Timberlake's 14 years of public indifference about his role in the scandal. What he did do was dedicate a portion of the show to Prince, whose hometown of Minneapolis was hosting Super Bowl LII. That didn't go over too well, either.

Prince's longtime friend, collaborator and one-time fiancée, Sheila E., spoke out after the show about Prince's wishes not to have his likeness used for performances after his death. From the interview she gave to Entertainment Tonight, it sounds like Timberlake originally wanted to use a Prince hologram for the show, but she shut that idea down.

"I just said no. I just felt that it was too soon," she said. "The hologram was weird, and Prince did tell me [to] make sure nobody ever does a hologram of me. 'If you’re still here, make sure nobody does a hologram.' He thought it was very demonic and that’s his spiritual beliefs."

Still, as Timberlake performed a cover of "I Would Die 4 U," videos of Prince flashed on a giant screen alongside him, seemingly directly defying the late singer's wishes.

After all the backlash, Timberlake defended his decision during his post-Super Bowl appearance on The Tonight Show, saying he got permission for the tribute from Prince's friend, Questlove.

"Questlove is the encyclopedia on music, but I also feel like a gatekeeper on Prince, so if I got the thumbs-up from Questlove, I’m good," he said.

Still, Prince fans don't seem appeased by that, and they shouldn't be. Overall, the performance and the tribute were underwhelming and mediocre, and we know Timberlake is capable of so much more. The show was a missed opportunity in so many ways: to make things right with Jackson, to put on a tribute worthy of Prince's memory and to perform a show that reminds us why Timberlake is one of the most enduring voices in pop music. In all regards, he fell short.

Michael Bublé & Wife Luisana Lopilato Are Having Another Baby

Michael Bublé and his wife, Argentinian actor Luisana Lopilato, are expecting their third child together, a rep of Bublé's has confirmed after an Instagram post of Lopilato sparked speculation she might be pregnant. (Lopilato is about 10 weeks along.)

This is very happy news for the couple, who have endured a tough year supporting their eldest son — Noah, age 4 — through his battle with liver cancer. Noah was diagnosed with the disease in November of 2016, and Bublé and Lopilato both took leave from work while their son underwent treatment. The couple also share son Elias, 2.

Fortunately, Noah's condition is stable. In December of 2017, a source reported to Us that Noah is doing well now and that Bublé "is ready to think about going back to work." The same source said Bublé and Lopilato still intend to keep their focus on their children, remarking, “This difficult time has brought them closer together and put things in perspective... Michael is keeping his workload light so he can spend as much time as possible [with family]."

Bublé and Lopilato have spoken openly about Noah's cancer struggle. Last July, Lopilato was interviewed on Argentinian TV. She told the host, "These things, when they happen to you in life, they make you realize that the most important thing isn’t what you thought it was — it’s to have faith, to be strong. There were nights I couldn’t sleep, that I prayed to God, because it’s a long process. But thank God the worst is over.”
Bublé told Us in February of 2017, “We are so grateful to report that our son Noah has been progressing well during his treatment and the doctors are very optimistic about the future for our little boy. He has been brave throughout and we continue to be inspired by his courage.”

What was the picture that fueled the pregnancy rumor, you ask? Let's just say the internet is pretty impressive at sniffing out pregnancies, because all we saw was a happy, fit woman with super-cool leggings.

Kim Cattrall and her family are going through the unthinkable: The Sex and the City actor's 55-year-old brother, Chris Cattrall, has been found dead. Cattrall made the announcement on social media just hours after posting a message to her fans saying he was missing and asking for help in the search.

"It is with great sadness that myself and my family announce the unexpected passing of our son and brother, Chris Cattrall," she wrote on both Twitter and Instagram, alongside a photo of herself smiling next to Chris. Chris was reported missing over the weekend of Feb. 2. Royal Canadian Mounted Police told E! News he hadn't been seen since Jan. 30 in his hometown of Lacombe, Alberta. He was later found dead on his own property, and while no details have been released about his cause of death, police have said it's not being considered suspicious.

Earlier Sunday, Cattrall had posted a photo of Chris on Instagram asking for help in finding him.

As dramatic as Sunday's big game was, there were a lot of things that happened during the Super Bowl that were big enough to totally eclipse the game itself. Kylie Jenner announced she had a baby. Pitchforks were raised in response to Justin Timberlake's problematic halftime show. And amid all the new movie trailers and TV spots peppered into a slew of exciting new commercials, HBO dropped a new trailer for Westworld Season 2, officially announcing its return in April.

Guys, from the looks of this trailer, Season 2 is going to be a doozy.

Anyone who watches an HBO series with any kind of regularity knows what a mistake it is to get attached to any character because there is no shame in killing off fan favorites on that network. But from the look of the trailer, Westworld Season 2 might be upping the ante for HBO. We can't tell too much from the purposefully vague teaser, but we can tell that the second season will be serving up plenty of death and destruction.

Evan Rachel Wood's Dolores Abernathy provides the sinister voice-over as we see scenes of the serene-looking Westworld resort.

"We built this world together... this world where dreams come true," she says. It's at that moment the scene shifts to one of the inner workings of the Delos offices, where men with guns are trying to control a herd of rampaging mechanical bulls.

"We can burn it to the ground," Dolores continues. "From the ashes, build a new world. Our world."

The first season of Westworld kept fans guessing with multiple timelines and narrative misdirection that left viewers feeling much like the show's hosts, wondering what's real and what's not. It looks like Season 2 will follow that pattern, because what's shown in the trailer isn't even necessarily what will be shown in the series; director Jonathan Nolan told Entertainment Tonight that he shot at least some of the footage exclusively for the Super Bowl spot.

We Need to Talk About Motherhood for People With Disabilities

Motherhood, along with everything associated with it, has been a prominent topic in the news for years. Whether it is maternity leave, motherhood and adoption for LGBTQ parents or abortion, various aspects of having kids have been hot topics with politicians, activists and the everyday citizen.

However, motherhood for people with disabilities is a topic that gets overlooked again and again. According to an article written by Robyn Powell, attorney advisor at the National Council on Disability in GPSolo (a publication of the American Bar Association), more than 6 percent of parents in the United States are living with disabilities with children under the age of 18 — approximately 4.1 million people, though research surmises numbers are even higher than that. It seems like mothers with disabilities would be more prominent in everyone's minds.

“One of the worst things anyone ever said to me was, ‘How could you do that to your kid?’” A., a 32-year-old woman and mother, tells me. She was born with cerebral palsy due to birth complications. “It’s like, because I’m disabled, [people think] I can’t love my kid or take care of him like a regular person. It’s insulting and… infuriating. I’m just as good [a mother] as anyone else. Probably better because I know compassion.”

She says that the hardest thing about being a mother with disabilities isn’t her actual disability or the symptoms associated with it, but the way society treats her because of it. When she expressed the desire to become a mother, people, including her doctor and her “own freaking mother” tried to talk her out of it despite it being her dream.

In 2012, the National Council on Disability released a report called "Rocking the Cradle: Ensuring the Rights of Parents with Disabilities and Their Children," with the aim to “advance understanding and promote the rights of parents with disabilities and their children.” They found that one of the biggest problems parents with disabilities face is retaining custody of their children. Between 40 and 80 percent of parents with an intellectual disability lose custody of their children, while findings were as high as 70 to 80 percent of parents living with mental health conditions. Around 13 percent of parents living with a physical disability have been discriminated against during custody cases, and deaf or blind parents also “report extremely high rates of child removal and loss of parental rights.”

Buck v. Bell, a court case that dates back to 1927, declared that it was constitutional for women with disabilities to be sterilized against their wills. The case involved an institutionalized woman named Carrie Bell, the daughter of a woman that was also in a psychiatric facility. At age 17, she was raped and gave birth to a daughter with disabilities, and it was determined then by the institution that she should be sterilized. Eventually, under Virginia’s laws, Bell’s sterilization was deemed legal. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. stated that it is “better for the world if, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind…Three generations of imbeciles are enough.”

More than 65,000 United States citizens were involuntarily sterilized by the 1970s, and by 1999, 27 states had restrictions for mentally ill parenthood on the books. A judge had to stop the parents of an adult woman with disabilities from forcing her to get an abortion “against her beliefs” and from having her tubes tied so she wouldn’t be able to conceive in the future. This happened as recently as 2012.

Forced sterilization of children with disabilities by their parents has been on the rise since 2004, when Ashley X, a 6-year-old child, began treatment to ensure she would never have the body of an adult. She was given high doses of estrogen to fuse her bones and stop growth, breast bud removal surgery and a hysterectomy. It has since been dubbed the Ashley Treatment. The director of the National Disability Rights Network, Curt Decker, believes that there are potentially thousands of families “actively exploring the possibility” of the Ashley Treatment for their own children.

While the legal rights of disabled mothers remains a pressing concern for disabled people and activists, the societal pressure disabled mothers and potential mothers face is also damaging. Cassandra, a mother with physical disabilities, says that she often gets questioned by total strangers about her parental abilities. Another mother with physical disabilities discusses how she and her husband married around the same time as several friends: “Almost immediately… my fellow brides would complain about the annoyance they felt when people peppered them with questions about when they were going to have a baby. That certainly wasn’t a question that people lined up to ask us.”

Like A., many women with disabilities face discrimination from their own family members, who don’t understand what it means to live with disabilities. When Jessica, a woman that has cerebral palsy, told her mother she was pregnant with twins, her mother responded, “Now your husband has three babies.”

Carrie, a mother with physical disabilities, faced discrimination from her father, who told her it was irresponsible for her to have children, predicting she would be an “unfit mother.” She says she turned out to be one of the “fittest mothers” she knows.

For these laws to eventually change, societal attitudes need to change. Salamishah Tillet, an associate professor of English and Africana studies at the University of Pennsylvania, says, “We are stuck in a hierarchy of traditional reproductive rights activism, which has historically placed abortion as its primary concern and other issues, like forced sterilization, far below.”

Disabled rights activists such as ADAPT, a grassroots organization that seeks “to assure the civil and human rights of people with disabilities to live in freedom,” work tirelessly to change the lives of people with disabilities nationwide, including mothers with disabilities.

“I’ll probably be dead by then,” A. says, “but I can’t wait for the day things change for disabled [mothers in] this country. That’s the future I want to see.”
