Julie Bowen Makes Sad Announcement About Her Own Modern Family

Julie Bowen and the rest of the Modern Family cast may nail the image of a happy family on the sitcom. But in real life, Bowen and her husband of 13 years, Scott Phillips, have just announced that they're separating. They married in 2004 and have three sons together: 10-year-old Oliver and 8-year-old twins John and Gustav.

Neither Bowen nor Phillips has spoken publicly about the split yet, but Us Weekly points out that just over a year ago, Bowen joked in an interview about how they stayed together because they were "too tired" to get a divorce.

"We watch all these people get married and split up and go, 'Wait, did they get married after us or before us?'" she told Us Weekly at the time. "We outlast all these people. The answer: We’re too tired to do anything else!"

And just a few months ago, Bowen admitted that she and Phillips were getting help for some marital problems.

"I’ve spent a lot of time in excellent therapy," she said in November. "Being perfect is not a good model for your children. They need to see that there’s tension or arguments, they need to see those get resolved, they need to see real life — not too much of real life. I’m pretty shy about the news with them, but I think real life has lots of... we’re not perfect people, but we can all love each other."

Amid their problems, Bowen, Phillips and their kids haven't been seen out together since February 2017, when they attended a Harlem Globetrotters game as a family. In hindsight, the writing may have been on the wall. Still, we're heartbroken at the breakup of one of our favorite celeb couples.

E! Reaches Verdict on Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Ryan Seacrest

Ryan Seacrest has been cleared after allegations of sexual harassment sparked an investigation at E!, one of his employers. The investigation was closed after it was decided that there was not enough evidence to support the allegations made against Seacrest.

More: Blake Shelton's Mom Almost Caused Him to Give Up Singing

The investigation was launched after a former stylist who worked at E! News at the same time as Seacrest alleged that he sexually harassed her nearly 10 years ago. Seacrest denied the report, calling it "reckless." E! hired an outside firm to investigate the report and just announced that Seacrest's name has been cleared.

"E! has now concluded the investigation into allegations regarding Ryan Seacrest," the network said in a statement. "The investigation, conducted by outside counsel, found insufficient evidence to substantiate allegations against Seacrest. E! is committed to providing a safe working environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity."

Unlike the floods of misconduct allegations that have brought down many other A-listers in recent months, this was the only public account about Seacrest. Still, in many sexual harassment cases, there is no evidence but the word of the victim against the word of the accused. A lack of evidence doesn't necessarily mean the report is false.

E! is also the network that recently came under fire for paying anchor Catt Sadler half of what a man in her same position was making. Even when Sadler discovered the pay discrepancy and asked for the same salary that her coanchor, Jason Kennedy, was making, the network reportedly refused to pay her fairly, resulting in her sudden departure from the job she'd held for 12 years. You have to admit, E!'s record of taking care of its female employees isn't spotless, and we hope the way this investigation was conducted isn't just another example of that.

Olive Garden Is Serving Up Pasta Nachos Just in Time for the Super Bowl

This weekend, we’ll all be rocking the nachos and wings, but those who want to bring their snacks up a notch may want to go a bit more Italian with their flavor — and one restaurant has done exactly that.

More: 10 Times Olive Garden breadsticks made everything better

Olive Garden's latest menu addition, Loaded Pasta Chips, are basically the American-Italian-Mexican fusion snack you never knew you needed until now. They are made of pasta chips (that sounds delightful) that are lightly fried and layered with Italian cheeses and a hearty meat sauce. Then they get topped with cherry peppers and an Alfredo drizzle. Um, yum.

It’s like all the worlds of our favorite comfort foods have joined as one, and we are so here for it. Of course it's weird and not what we're used to, but it's not that strange. Haven't we been topping nachos with meat and cheese for years? Why not add some pasta to the mix?

More: Copycat Olive Garden minestrone satisfies your soup craving at home

If you are ready to give these utterly delicious Italian nachos a try, you’ll have to act fast. This appetizer is available until April 1, which is unironically April Fool’s Day. They are available in Olive Garden locations, but you can also order them online for restaurant pickup for $10.79. That’s a pretty good bargain for a hybrid of so much deliciousness.

We recommend rocking some bottomless soup and salad while you are at it just to get some nutritional value. Spring is nearly here, after all.

The Most Memorable Super Bowl Halftime Moments of All Time

$

Sure, the Super Bowl is great, but the halftime show is what makes the night — makes or breaks it I guess you could say. (Unless you're a Patriots or an Eagles fan right now... then you have your own priorities.)

From the scandals to the career-making moments and everything in between, no matter the reason, these nine halftime show moments are unforgettable.

More: The First Celebrity Super Bowl Commercial Is Here, & It Stars Keanu Reeves

Oh, and Justin Timberlake already makes the list twice. Will Super Bowl LII be his third memorable performance? Let's hope this time it's for a good reason instead of a boob-filled one.

Here are the Super Bowl performances that have gone down in history.

1. Michael Jackson basks in the love

At the Super Bowl halftime show in 1993, Michael Jackson spent a solid minute and a half frozen in a pose onstage while reveling in the explosion of cheers and chants from the crowd around him. Just when we thought we couldn't take the silence any longer, Jackson slowly came to life, dancing as only Jackson could.

2. Beyoncé steals the show

Sure, Coldplay was the main act in 2016, but Beyoncé gave the most memorable performance as she debuted "Formation," with her dancers dressed as Black Panthers.

3. Left Shark

Oh, Left Shark, what would 2015 have become without you? Let me tell you, it would have been a lot emptier without those epic GIFs. In case you somehow slept through 2015, during Katy Perry's halftime performance that year, Left Shark, one of two backup dancers dressed as a shark (the one on the left, obv.), seemingly went rogue, showing off his own dance moves. And the internet loved every minute of it.

4. The Indiana Jones staging

For some reason, in 1995, Disney thought it was a brilliant idea to stage an Indiana Jones show during the halftime show. Harrison Ford was smart enough to stay away. It was weird and oh-so memorable for its awkwardness. It ended with a rendition of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and a lot of raised eyebrows.

5. Diana Ross' big exit

As if Diana Ross' halftime show wasn't already memorable for her performance, she ended the show by announcing, "Oh, my — here comes my ride!" right in the middle of her song. And then promptly flying away in a helicopter. Yas, Queen!

6. "Walk This Way"

Some called it a mess; other called it brilliant. Whatever it was, Aerosmith, Britney Spears, NSYNC, Mary J. Blige and Nelly put on a memorable show in 2001. All of them came onstage to help Aerosmith sing "Walk This Way." Spears wore an arm sock. JC Chasez had a baby goatee. Justin Timberlake made fire explode from his hands (the things that man's hands do at Super Bowl halftime shows...). And Nelly added in a verse from "E.I." Oh, and the men of the movie DodgeBall, specifically Ben Stiller, helped them open the act. Mic drop...?

7. A tribute to the 9/11 victims

In 2002, U2 recognized the state of the world following 9/11 and tailored their Super Bowl halftime show accordingly. They honored the victims and brought the nation even closer together. It's regarded as the best Super Bowl halftime show in history.

8. Prince, obviously

In 2007, it was pouring rain at the Super Bowl. No better setting for "Purple Rain" could have been possible, and Prince didn't even flinch at performing in the rain. The show must go on, and Prince delivered.

9. Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"

Obviously, this list wouldn't be complete without the most infamous Super Bowl halftime show in history. In 2004, Janet Jackson's boob was exposed when Timberlake seemingly pulled off the cup of her outfit, causing a scandal so large it still lives on today.

You can bet Justin Timberlake won't be repeating previous mistakes in 2018. Right now, he's too busy thanking his lucky stars he gets a second chance.

Meet Kylie Jenner, Mommy Blogger

Updated February 2, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. EST: Apparently, our favorite mommy-blogger-to-be-who-is-not-currently-on-social-media is one step ahead of us as usual. A source tells People that reportedly pregnant Kylie Jenner has already landed on the perfect name for her reported daughter (yep, it's — reportedly — a girl!). Although Jenner “has a baby name” already selected, the source notes that she "is not selling baby pictures.” So don't get any ideas!

Kylie, can you come out of hiding, please? If only for the purely selfish reason that we are so darn tired of typing "reportedly" 15 times in a row?

Original story, published Jan. 23, 2018Kylie Jenner still refuses to confirm or deny her pregnancy — and she's gone virtually dark on social media. Are you starting to stress? We're starting to stress. It's hard to keep going when all we have to sustain us is a Christmas post on Jenner's Instagram feed — with no belly in sight.

Kylie last IG post

Still, the internet has decided that Jenner is expecting her beau Travis Scott's baby any day now. And there are "reports" (rumors) Jenner has a plan to rebrand herself when her baby arrives — as her usual social media-centric self, but now with motherhood as the focus.

More: Reportedly Pregnant Kylie & Definitely Pregnant Khloé Pose for Holiday Pic

“As soon as the baby is born, she will make an announcement and introduce the baby to her fans. She will also address the fact that she went ‘dark’ on social media and in the public,” one of those weird can't-be-a-real-friend "sources" told Entertainment Tonight. “She will release a photo, and yes, she will acknowledge the baby. She’s excited to continue to be her authentic self, and that will soon mean being a mother and sharing that with her fans.”

Yep, Jenner's "authentic self" will be sharing motherhood with her fans — which W Magazine is convinced means the impending debut of Kylie Jenner, mommy blogger extraordinaire.

Because at some point, Jenner is "definitely not going to deny that she’s had a baby or continue to evade questions about it all," the ET source assures us. Well, it is pretty tough to deny you have a baby when you're, you know, carrying around an actual live baby all the time. Thanks, source.

So where's Jenner been? And how does she expect us to do our own lip liner? Well, the same source says Jenner is "living her best life." Okey-doke. "She has really enjoyed this time away from the spotlight. It’s the first time she can remember in her entire life not being followed by cameras and she’s just trying to enjoy this privacy.”

More: Wendy Williams Shamed Kylie Jenner for Reported Pregnancy

Although the internet was in an uproar when news originally got out about all the Kardashian-Jenner babies on the way (Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West's surrogate delivered Chicago West on Jan. 15, and both Khloé Kardashian and Jenner are reportedly due soon), Jenner's closest family and friends weren't surprised at all Jenner was on board this particular — crowded — baby train.

“No one in Kylie’s life was shocked when she got pregnant,” a source close to Kylie told Us Weekly. “Everyone knew she always wanted to be a mom and that was one of her goals in life." This source also confirmed Jenner's staying busy at home with fittings and photo shoots — and even plans to have her baby there.

Kylie, we appreciate the fact that you need your privacy right now, and we have no doubt you'll be a major influencer in the mommy blog world. But girl, send up a flare. Or release more instructional lip-lining videos. We're lost without you.

Tom Brady Catches Flak for Kissing Son ‘Too Long’

Oh, boy. Tom Brady is back in the news, and it's got nothing to do with this weekend's upcoming Super Bowl. Nope. Once again, Tom Brady's #DadLife is the focus of internet debate.

You might recall that earlier this week/last week, a radio show host referred to Brady's 5-year-old daughter, Vivian, as "an annoying little pissant." The host was referring to a scene featuring Vivian in Brady's new Tom Vs. Time Facebook docuseries. Star Patriots quarterback Brady shut that smack talk down like a defensive linebacker/all-around rock star dad. So what's the Tom talk about today? Well, the internet can't decide if an affectionate smooch between Brady and his son — in the same documentary — was a little too cozy for comfort.

Poor Brady. We're pretty sure all this ruckus about his family life was not what he had in mind when releasing said documentary. But go ahead. You can decide for yourself whether you're weirded out by the father-son bond between Brady and his 11-year-old son Jack (with ex-girlfriend, actor Bridget Moynahan). Brady also has son Benjamin, 8, with wife Gisele Bündchen.

Tom Brady son video

Tom Brady son video

In the scene in question, Brady is getting a sports massage at home when Jack wanders in to check his fantasy football standings.

"What do I get?" Brady jokes with his son. Jack gives his dad a kiss and starts to exit, when the massage therapist pipes up, "You know, Jack. Everything comes with a cost, bud."

"That was, like, a peck," Brady protests. So Jack obligingly trots back to his dad and kisses him on the mouth again. Twitter is fired up about this, referring to the length of the smooch as "uncomfortably long" and "disturbing."

CBS2 even sent a reporter out onto the street to see what New Yorkers thought. Mind you, New York in general is not a fan of the Patriots, so that might not have been the prime place for unbiased on-the-ground polling about the Pats' star QB.

Parrish Watson of Parkchester, New York, watched the video clip with the reporter and said of the kiss, "Too long, like romantic long."

But Kurt Czaplinski of Hempstead, New York, disagreed. “I kiss my son on his lips. I have since day one. I would have no problem with my son kissing me like that.”

Others, meanwhile, have called out the trading-a-kiss-for-a-favor dynamic as the problematic part of the scene. “I don’t think affection should ever be tied in with a favor,” said parenting expert Carolyn Meyer-Wartels to CBS2.

Brady has not remarked on the hubbub, at least not yet. But this is no doubt the last thing he and the Patriots want to be worrying about at the moment.

Kim Kardashian West Sent Valentine's Gifts to Her Least Favorite People

Kim Kardashian West may be the champion of celebrity feuds. She has so many of them, yet she always seems to come out on top. How, you ask? By being completely unaffected by the jabs others make at her — until she shades them back with something epically petty.

More: Kim Kardashian West Announces Baby Name & You'll Never Believe It

Kardashian West is launching a new fragrance line this Valentine's Day, and so, in a sweet, very Kim-like gesture, she's sending bottles to all of her best friends. But guess who's also getting free bottles? Apparently, everyone who has ever wronged her.

In a hilariously brutal Snapchat story, Kardashian West explained that everyone, even her "haters," is getting a bottle of her new scents. She also showed off her color-coded list of the recipients. Everyone in green is a "hater," and it includes pretty much everyone who's ever picked a public fight with Kardashian West: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Piers Morgan, Janice Dickinson, Naya Rivera, Chloë Grace Moretz, Blac Chyna, Pink, Bette Midler, Wendy Williams, Chelsea Handler, Sharon Osbourne and, of course, Taylor Swift.

Kim Kardashian's list of

Wondering what all these people did to earn spots on Kardashian West's Valentine's Day Naughty List? The vast majority of them called her out in some way for posting naked photos online (Morgan called it "not very feminist" and Moretz told Kardashian West she wasn't a good role model for kids). Gellar said in an interview that she was canceling her Vogue subscription after Kardashian West appeared on the cover. Dickinson shaded her by saying she's "not a model," despite appearing on so many magazine covers. Chyna sued the whole Kardashian family for defamation after the fiasco that was her brief and tumultuous relationship with Kardashian West's younger brother, Rob Kardashian. And Swift? Well, I don't think we even need to get into that.

So, is this Kardashian West's attempt at making peace with those she's feuded with? Something tells us probably not, and a move this petty will only fan the flames of her many social media beefs. Still, it's ridiculously entertaining to watch it go down, so you won't hear us complaining.

Are Sexual Consent Apps a Step in the Right Direction?

$
0
0

Could you imagine a future when you would be asked to sign a sexual consent contract with a single tap on a phone screen? Well, we are in it. LegalFling, a new Dutch phone app, has created this exact idea with a live contract that is a “legally binding agreement” according to the app's website.

This isn’t the first phone application to attempt to traverse the he-said, she-said. Good2Go was another free application with which potential partners could determine whether two people were ready to have sexual relations or not.

The app was simple: A screen pops up and asks the partner, “Are we good2go?” There are two possible answers, “No, thanks” and “Yes, but we need to talk.” If a partner chooses “No, thanks,” a screen pops up that says, “Remember! No means No! Only Yes means Yes, BUT can be changed to NO at anytime!”

For the app LegalFling, topics in the contract touch on rules of condoms, STIs and the privacy of photos and videos.

More: Our Narrow View of Sexual Assault Is Letting People Get Away With It

However, Good2Go seemed to disappear into the depths of the internet. The only application under this name that exists now is a bathroom app for users to find clean public restrooms. Somehow, this is eerily similar to navigating the current dating world.

While these apps may have good intentions, especially with technology ruling the current dating sphere, they are lacking in many other important areas. While most people find consenting via a contract unsexy or unattractive, there are also serious implications that these applications would do nothing to help an actual victim in a situation of assault or rape.

Consent is revocable, which we have seen illustrated in the recent Aziz Ansari allegations or in the fictional (but shockingly real and accurate) New Yorker piece "Cat Person." At any moment, an individual can change their mind about sex, so a legally binding blockchain like the one created on LegalFling could be problematic and dangerous for participating individuals when it comes to full control over their own body.

Consent isn’t a yes or no answer that remains flatlined for the entire time you are sexually active with any individual. Everyone has the freedom to revoke this, and these applications are actually creating the opposite — a he-said, she-said could turn into a “Well, she originally said yes and signed a contract,” even though she later changed her answer to no.

Another phone app, SaSie, is more specifically geared toward students who are looking to sign a consent form before engaging in any further activities together. Apps like these require reading and signing lengthy contracts, providing photos of IDs and saving it onto a file via your phone.

However, pressuring someone to click yes on a phone app isn’t considered in applications like this. These applications misunderstand what it means to be a sexual individual, seeking consent from their partner and for themselves.

“People think about consent in terms of ‘I need to cover my ass so no one can accuse me of rape.’ And honestly, when you’re approaching consent from that angle, that’s a really rapey angle… it’s about covering your butt instead of actually showing up for your partner,” writes Jaclyn Friedman in Yes Means Yes! Visions of Female Sexual Power & a World Without Rape.

More: The Impact of Sexual Harassment on Mental Health

Consent is about treating your partner or any individual like a human being and giving them the respect we all deserve. It does not lie in the application in a checklist and long thread of words meant for legal action after consent has been violated. It is the trust that your sexual partner, your friend, a stranger, a human being, will not violate your freedom or your safety.

Terrible design flaws aside, these types of apps do bring a conversation of consensual and safe sex to the forefront. With 1 in 5 college students being sexually assaulted and not reporting it, a dialogue between partners to safely explain what they want and don't want to do is necessary. It provides a platform for intimacy, exploration and trust.

The smartphone application, PlsPlsMe does a decent job of achieving this type of activity. Couples are asked to take a quiz in which they are asked about current kinks or interests. If partners share that interest, they are encouraged to discuss those topics and how to begin incorporating them into the bedroom.

Empowering Victims created three applications that design a conversation over the topic of consent.

  1. We-Consent incorporates video consent.
  2. What-About-No has a video component of a police officer telling them no.
  3. I’ve-Been-Violated includes video and audio after an assault has occurred for them to gain as much evidence as possible.

Obviously, these applications have serious flaws and are not meant to be used in a practical situation, but are meant to create conversation and education. The executive director of Empowering Victims, Michael Lissack, said, “The goal is to encourage and ‘nudge’ such dialogue into taking place.”

More: 7 Books to Start the Conversation About Sexual Assault

Smartphone applications are taking the tech world by storm — so why not breach the world of sexual education and sexual consent? These start-ups are fostering the right questions, demanding the correct answers, but are falling short of getting users to truly understand responsible and safe interactions.

Fun Valentine's Day Party Games the Whole Family Will Enjoy

Valentine's Day isn't just about romantic love — and heart-eye emojis and flowers and candy and dinner at a fancy restaurant. It's about all kinds of love, including your love for your littles. Kids often adore Valentine's Day — all those construction paper valentines don't make themselves! And while it's easy to appease kids in the holiday spirit with pizza and some candy, there are other fun ways to stretch your kids' Valentine's Day party out — and get them thinking, moving and having fun.

Whether you're looking to host a Valentine's Day party at your house with your family and friends or are neck-deep in planning for a class party, here are a few ideas that will keep the kids engaged and the party hopping.

Valentine's Day Bingo

Luckily for us, there are talented people out there who spend time creating amazing things we can just print out at home. For Valentine's Day, Amber from Crazy Little Projects has this amazing bingo printable that makes Valentine's Day interactive and fun. Simply print out your boards and cards for drawing, choose the candy of your liking, and get busy having tons of fun. You and the kids will love it.

Tic-Tac-toe

Tic-Tac-Toe Valentine Card

While you could always print out these nifty cards and hand them out as actual valentines, it's kind of a more fun idea to distribute them as part of a Valentine's Day party — along with, of course, Tic Tacs. Sure, this idea involves a bit of printing and cutting (get a paper cutter; seriously, they're the best) but a little DIY action can result in a whole lot of fun times at your Valentine's Day soiree.

Stack the hearts

Valentine candy hearts

You know those little conversation hearts, right? That classic Valentine's Day candy that's been around since probably the dawn of candy. You can use those for a party game that takes little preparation but is tons of fun. Each child gets a handful of hearts and lays them out flat on the table. At the signal, they stack the hearts. Sounds easy, but these little candies are not perfectly flat, so it's challenging. Set a timer for 20 or 30 seconds, and whoever gets the highest tower wins.

Guess how many

Candy hearts in a jar

This is another candy heart game that is super-easy to prepare. Simply grab a jar — a regular Mason jar will work — and load it with candy hearts (count how many there are first). Kids write their guess and their name on a slip of paper, and whoever is closest to the correct answer wins. As for the prize, simply hand over the jar to the winner (or consider handing out boxes of candy hearts to all participants if you want to be fair).

As for candy heart games, that's not all: You can invite kids to race by moving hearts from one cup to another — with chopsticks. Or have them place hearts on a spoon, speed-walk a certain distance and transfer the hearts to a classmate. You can even get younger kids involved "helping out" by counting the hearts and sorting them by color.

Valentine's Day party games don't have to be a huge, expensive deal; on the contrary, there's plenty to DIY. Plus, kids will probably be so jazzed up with all the sugar and Valentine's Day excitement, they'll be thrilled about whatever you manage to pull together.

This Bachelor Contestant Was a Missing Person Before Going on the Show

Humboldt County, California, reportedly has the highest per capita rate of missing persons reports in the entire Golden State. That's something the North Coast Journal, a local Humboldt newspaper, is looking into. Last Sunday, the paper posted an investigative report seeking to discover why so many people are reported missing in the county. The article was posted to Facebook along with a slideshow of the 35 people currently reported missing. Then, commenters pointed out that one of them definitely isn't MIA.

She's on The Bachelor.

More: The Drama of Bachelor Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s Season Has Already Begun

Rebekah Martinez, currently a fan favorite contestant on Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season of the show, was reported missing by her mother on Nov. 18. Since filming for The Bachelor started in late September, we can only assume that Martinez, known as Bekah M. on the show, left to compete for love and didn't tell her mom.

What's even better is that, according to the North Coast Journal, Martinez told her mom she was going to work on a marijuana farm. We can kind of understand not wanting to tell friends and family that you're going to be incommunicado because you're starting a stint on The Bachelor, but that is quite the excuse she came up with. A pot farm without cell service? Couldn't she have said she was going on a long, exotic vacation? A yoga retreat? This was the most mom-friendly excuse she could think of?

At the time this article was published, Martinez was still listed on the California Attorney General's website as a missing person.

Screenshot of Bekah Martinez listed as missing in California

But the North Coast Journal reports that a Humboldt County Sheriff's Office deputy spoke with Martinez and she is no longer considered missing. And considering that Martinez appeared in a promo video for The Bachelor that aired on Nov. 18, the day her mom made the report, she probably never should have been.

Martinez, to her credit, is taking all of this in stride.

There's a lesson here, folks. Even if you're embarrassed about being a burgeoning reality TV star, there are better cover stories than saying you're going to work on a backwoods marijuana farm. 12 Butter Substitutes to Save You a Trip to the Store

When you're in the middle of baking and you realize you are flat out of butter, you might think it's a disaster you have to run immediately to the grocery store to resolve. But it's not true. There are a remarkable number of alternatives for butter when it comes to baking.

More: 5 Easy Ways to Substitute Milk in Your Baked Goods

If you can, we recommend experimenting with butter substitutions before you absolutely have to — just so you have an idea of what the results will really be — but in a pinch, these get the job done.

If you're planning to go dairy-free long-term, start testing substitutions with a recipe you know well. Each substitution can have different effects depending on the specific recipe.

If possible, quarter or halve the recipe until you think you've nailed it. You don't want to waste ingredients or be stuck with an inedible batch of cookies or quick bread (if such a thing even exists). You can even try using half butter and half substitute if dairy allergy isn't a factor.

And don't be afraid to experiment with the substitutes even if you aren't out of butter. These swaps might offer added depth or an interesting new texture to your baked goods. Just have fun with it, and maybe you'll discover a new secret family recipe.

Cindy Crawford's Daughter Trolled Mom's Sexy Photo Shoot

Ultra supermodel and '90s icon Cindy Crawford just got hilariously trolled by her daughter — up-and-coming model Kaia Gerber — on Instagram. (See, and you thought it was just your kid making snarky comments on your #TBT Facebook feed and avoiding you on Snapchat.)

The two clearly have a great relationship; they're often spotted at public events together, pulling off the twinsies look perfectly. So it's fun to catch a glimpse of their affectionate — yet snarky — bond on social media too. And it's reassuring to know that even supermodels get teased mercilessly by their teen offspring.

When Crawford posted her latest Instagram pic — captioned "Versace Versace Versace Versace" — Gerber was definitely paying attention. In the pic from a recent InStyle photo shoot, Crawford is posing up a storm with her arm around the shoulders of a hot young male model (wearing only Versace briefs) who is clutching her calf and lustily painting her toenails — red, of course.

Gerber quickly pounced on the opportunity to call out her mama in the comments.

"MOM!" she wrote first. Then she posted another comment: "where's dad," referring to Rande Gerber. Nicely played, Grasshopper Gerber; the force is strong with this one (I know those aren't the same show... sorry).

The entire Versace-clad photo shoot is full of delicious male models doting on Crawford by a pool and pouring her tea. We're pretty sure her daughter didn't actually mind the racy spread, as she's now in the biz herself — and scoring covers like British Vogue.

But she's definitely got her dad's back, as evidenced by this adorable father-daughter selfie she posted on Instagram.

Could [SPOILER] Be the Next Character to Get Killed Off The Walking Dead?

With the bonkers Season 8A finale stilled burned into our brains — including the reveal that Carl is not long for this world — it might be fair to say that things are about to go from bad to worse for our favorite Walking Dead characters. Rick is not only staring down the barrel of the proverbial gun that is a war with Negan and the Saviors, he's also going to have to say goodbye to his soon-to-be-zombie teenage son, so things are about to get rough for our hero. He's going to need all the support he can get. And while that support system is already present and accounted for, what Rick might not be counting on is losing another close friend. That could very well happen if some of the rumors going around about one actor's involvement with The Walking Dead going forward prove to be true.

More: How [SPOILER] Feels About Being Killed Off The Walking Dead

On Friday, Deadline reported that TWD star Lauren Cohan might be fielding offers from different TV shows. According to the outlet, as the 2018 pilot season firms up across the TV industry, it would seem that Cohan is in high demand and is currently being offered not one but a number of roles on various TV pilots. There's no word on whether Cohan has chosen to pursue talks with the production teams on any of the shows in question (and we don't know which shows those would be, exactly), but the news is wild, to say the least.

Maggie TWD GIF 1

Wild because, well, Cohan has become an integral part of TWD since she first popped up in Season 2 as Maggie. Since then, she's become a core member of the cast, with Maggie's development as a character and her relationship with Glenn becoming a major emotional arc in the series. As of the Season 8A finale, Maggie is pregnant and preparing to fight for her life and the lives of her friends. There's no logical reason for her to be written off (aside from the built-in easy out that the world of TWD provides, a deadly zombie bite), and frankly, losing her at this point in the story would be needless and cruel, especially when she's really coming into her own as a leader on the show.

More: Andrew Lincoln Reveals Who Is in the Graves on The Walking Dead

That said, it makes sense that Cohan would be eyeing an exit in real life if, as Deadline notes, she is not given the pay parity with male costars Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus that she has been seeking. Deadline notes that Lincoln and Reedus are "paid significantly more than all of their female colleagues." We have no idea how much that is, but it's certainly enough of a gap to have Cohan fighting for more.

Maggie TWD GIF 2

Cohan's contract with the show has opened up, leaving her free to negotiate her salary with AMC and possibly be open to new offers elsewhere. Hence the rumors that she could be leaving the show and, as a result, Maggie would probably be killed off. There are no indicators at present to suggest whether Cohan is leaning toward staying or going, but let's hope that AMC sees reason and works with her to give her pay parity. With Season 9 already a go and Cohan's future with the show still up in the air, fans of TWD should prepare for anything.

More: A Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead Crossover Is Happening

It would be a disappointing way to go after seven years, but Cohan choosing to leave because she is not getting paid the same amount as her male costars — who arguably have the same amount of screen time and importance in the show these days as she does — would be justified. Numerous female TV stars have come forward lately, including Ellen Pompeo and Tracee Ellis Ross, describing how they have had to negotiate hardcore to get the pay they deserve for the performances they give on the hit shows they anchor. Cohan's in a similar boat as these women, and hopefully, she'll get the pay parity she seeks.

Social Media Can Be a Lifeline for Women Battling Illness, Loss & Depression

The negative stigma surrounding women's health, especially mental health, is unproductive and dangerous, and normalizing the conversation is more important than ever. Social media is one medium that can expedite that process, as highlighted by three brave women who took the stage at SheKnows Media's BlogHer18 Health conference on Wednesday, Jan. 31 to share how social media helped them heal from their personal health battles.

Eva Amurri Martino (who's mom is none other than Susan Sarandon) was an actor for 15 years before she decided to switch gears and started her blog, Happily Eva After, a few months before suffering from a miscarriage, which triggered a very painful time in her life.

"It was very sudden. It was pretty late in the game — later than I thought people had miscarriages," Amurri Martino told the audience. "It was a deeply painful, really isolating experience. In the midst of my pain and my reaction to this experience, I realized that no one was talking about this and... [since it's] something that happens to 1 in 4 pregnancies, there must be a community of people who are suffering in silence. I decided to write a very public blog post, and the response I got really showed me what an appetite there is for openness and authenticity and sharing the good, the bad and the ugly of this very collective motherhood experience.”

It was the first time blogging helped Amurri Martino through a painful experience — but not the last. At just 5 weeks old, her son suffered a skull fracture and a subdural hematoma when the night nurse fell asleep and accidentally dropped him.

“We were in the hospital for three days. We didn’t know if he would have to be put in a coma. It was just, as you would imagine, an extremely harrowing experience that I was very unprepared for, and it just kind of sparked full-on PTSD, postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety,” said Amurri Martino. “Last January, I decided to write a blog post detailing what I was going through, and that’s when I started writing about and championing postpartum anxiety and a lot of these mental health issues in the motherhood space, because it can be an extremely isolating experience.”

Kendall Rayburn also used her blog for support when she was diagnosed with endometriosis. Originally a craft blogger, Rayburn began blogging about her battle with endometriosis after receiving a diagnosis at 22. “I had all this knowledge about endometriosis, about how I was feeling, what I was going through, and for me to sit down in the dark of my living room and share that was the most therapeutic thing. When people started responding to it, I was like, ‘OK, I need to keep doing this and putting myself out there,’” said Rayburn.

Phoebe Lapine, founder of nutrition blog Feed Me Phoebe and author of The Wellness Project, was diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis 10 years ago. “I was really struggling, and I think one thing we all can identify with is the feeling of isolation that comes with mental health issues, chronic illness, and I thought to myself, ‘Gee, I am technically in the healthy living space, and if I’m having this much trouble, how lost must everyone else be feeling?’” she said.

That's when Lapine decided to publicly share her journey living with Hashimoto thyroiditis. "Just the validation of sharing your story and realizing that it can have an impact was amazing... I think it’s so important for people to share their experiences because we’re the ones in the trenches, out in the real world figuring out how to [heal ourselves and live with the illness], and that’s the part I don’t think is talked about enough.”

While we often hear about the negative impacts of social media, it's important to realize that it can also be used as an outlet for healing and support. As these three brave women demonstrate, sometimes the feeling of isolation that accompanies a diagnosis can be just as damaging as the physical symptoms of the disease. But there are other people going through the same thing as you, and luckily, social media is making it much easier to find them.

How to Use a Foam Roller in Your Workout

The deeper you get into your workout routine, the more you reap the rewards — and ahem — the aches and pains, especially if you lean toward a more strenuous approach to exercise — say with running, boxing, high-intensity interval training or CrossFit — you might wake up the next day tight and sore. As any fitness professional or trainer will tell you, prioritizing rest is just as important as making the effort to work up a sweat. One effective way to ensure you’re giving your body the TLC it not only needs but craves is by using a foam roller.

Even if you’ve seen some buddies use one of these or you’ve read about their miracle-working wonders, the sight of one might be a tad intimidating. Before you walk away and subject yourself to a sensitive neck or uncomfortable shoulders after arm day, take it from these pros, who explain how super-simple these stretching accessories can be.

What is a foam roller?

Nah, it’s not what your grandma puts in her hair before she sleeps. Fitness influencer and enthusiast Brian Mazza explains foam rollers are an inexpensive, versatile piece of equipment that helps you work out the knots in your muscles while giving yourself a deep tissue massage.

“You can use it to loosen up areas that are tight like your outer thigh, quadriceps and upper back,” he tells SheKnows. “You can also enhance your planks with it, build your balance and strengthen your core, safely crack your back and more.”

When you spot them in the gym or at your beloved boutique fitness studio, you’ll notice they come in all shapes and sizes. As fitness expert Hans David Rearick adds, a variety of brands offer these cylindrical tools anywhere from 12 inches to 24 inches in length and between 6 and 8 inches in diameter. Some are smooth, while others are more jagged, and the higher-tech ones have vibration modes. While you can get started with a single one, those who swear by them might have a variety at home to target everything from their legs and buttocks to their arms and neck.

Why are they important to your routine?

With most workouts, the goal is to get your heart pumping, your blood flowing and your muscles working. Not only does consistent exercise help you maintain your weight, but it helps to manage your level of happiness by constantly circulating endorphins.

All of this sweat is great for your mind and body, but it can cause fatigue when you stay consistent with your routine. That’s where foam rollers come in handy. As Mazza explains, “they help increase blood flow throughout the body, help with better movement and increased range of motion.”

And if you intend to stay active for, say, as long as you can, Mazza adds they also help decrease your chance of injury because you’re properly stretched out after each workout. This means you can keep going for longer and won’t have to take as long to recover between sessions.

Even if you think your go-to stretching moves are enough, Dana Morrissey, fitness expert and fascial stretch specialist, says it’s not enough to provide relief for those who are generally very tight post-sweat. Sometimes, it can even do damage.

“Muscles can be either too short [or] too long — when something feels tight, it can certainly be because of the latter. Stretching what is already on stretch can lead to strains and tears,” she explains. “Even for those who aren't flexible, a foam roller can help get to those places self-stretching cannot. While the jury is still out on how the science exactly works, proponents of foam rolling report less muscle soreness, less tension and better flexibility following rolling.”

How to use a foam roller

Ready to give it a roll? Awesome. Just remember, you don’t have to spend a lot of time applying your weight on the foam roller, Morrissey explains. “Thirty to 45 seconds on each body part you want to work on is enough time to make a change. All exercises below are to be done in this time frame. Overdoing it can create pain, and as always, if something doesn't feel right, stop immediately,” she recommends.

Save a little time at the end of your next visit to the gym and try out these beginner-approved moves that might make you a believer.

For tight calves:

After a marathon-training run or a particularly squat-heavy session at the gym, going up and down stairs could be torturous the next day. As a way to prevent or diminish the next-day soreness, Morrissey suggests lying flat on your back and placing the roller underneath the middle of your right calf while bending the left knee and placing it on the floor out of the way.

“Slowly bend and straighten the right knee so the roller starts gliding over the muscles. Keep your movement small and try to keep your right foot relaxed,” she instructs. Then, repeat on the other side.

For sore quads & fronts of thighs:

For many people, this group of muscles is what Morrissey calls a "hotbed of knots." In addition to making leg day rather uncomfortable and difficult, having soreness in this area can create pain in your lower back and knees too. Ease this area by placing the roller slightly above both knees while you come into a forearm position with your neck long.

“Slowly roll about an inch or 2 inches of the quads at one time. After 30 to 45 seconds, stop your movement and windshield wiper the legs (move them left to right) or if you are seated, windshield wiper the roller on your legs using your hands. Continue to work your way up the thighs in the same fashion,” she says.

For a tight upper back:

No matter what type of fitness routine you prefer — including softer movements, like yoga or Pilates — you’re bound to experience upper-back pain after you really put in the extra effort. Morrissey says this area is one of the most important to focus on, especially to keep your spine healthy over time. Begin in a seated position with your knees bent and your feet on the floor, bringing them as close to your bum as you can. Then, place the roller under the middle of both your shoulder blades as you interlace your fingers behind your head and draw your elbows toward the ceiling.

“Press your weight into your feet and lift your butt into a hover. Begin to roll small sections of the upper back at a time, again just an inch or 2, for 30 to 45 seconds,” she says. If you’re uncomfortable here, you can also try this same movement against a wall for less intensity.

Once you’ve finished with that area, she says to sit back down, keeping your upper back on the roller and side-bend at your waist left and right as your upper back is on the roller for 30 to 45 seconds. “Repeat the same sequence, doing one or two more spots down the back, but stop at the bottom of the bra line/rib wall area. It's not ideal to do full-body weighted movements on this area of the ribs as they are floating,” she adds.

So, after your next workout, instead of complaining about sore muscles, you might want to try a foam roller as a way to help your recovery and soothe any aches.

The Horrifying Way the U.S. Treats Moms With Postpartum Depression

By Annamarie Houlis

Recently, new mom Jessica Porten had her first obstetrician appointment since giving birth four months prior — they kept canceling her appointments.

She waited for over an hour with her daughter, Kira, until a nurse practitioner finally called her in. When she let the nurse know she was experiencing postpartum depression that was “manifesting in fits of anger” but assured her she’d never hurt herself of her baby — she only wanted to discuss her medication options — the nurse rushed through her pelvic exam, barely spoke of any medication, left the room to "talk to the doctor" about her PPD and instead called the police.

“The cops can clearly see I’m of sound mind... so they allow me to drive to the ER with Kira in my car while one cop drives in front of me and one follows behind,” Porten explains in a now-viral Facebook post that’s already garnered more than 39,000 engagements, more than 32,000 shares and more than 10,000 comments at the time of this writing.

After checking her in, drawing blood and taking a urine sample, the hospital staff removed and locked up all of Porten's clothes and flip-flops, gave her a pair of socks, and fed her a turkey sandwich since she’d missed lunch. She wasn't seen by a social worker until 10:45 p.m.

The social worker ultimately decided that Porten didn't need to be there nor did she need to be put on a psychiatric hold. The social worker began to process Porten's discharge.

“Not once during all of this has a doctor laid eyes on me,” she writes. “Not once. Not even before they decided to call the cops on me. The social worker hands me some papers and discusses the information in them, telling me she thinks these ‘will probably be good resources for you.’ I leave the ER at midnight, my spirit more broken than ever, no medication, no follow up appointment, never spoke to a doctor. This was a 10-hour ordeal that I had to go through all while caring for my infant that I had with me. And that’s it. That’s what I got for telling my OB that I have PPD and I need help. I was treated like a criminal and then discharged with nothing but a stack of xeroxed printouts with phone numbers on them… Ladies and gentleman, our healthcare system.”

Mom with Postpartum Depression FB post

Mom with Postpartum Depression FB post

Porten is not alone in experiencing PPD. Of course, childbirth affects a woman’s hormones immensely, which means it can incite a range of emotions — from elation to fear to anxiety. It’s not uncommon for mothers to experience mood swings, anxiety and insomnia after giving birth, especially within the first two weeks post-delivery. In fact, more than one-third of mothers have experienced mental health issues related to parenthood. But for upward of 20 percent of women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these complications devolve into depression.

PPD can develop anywhere from a few weeks into motherhood to even a year after delivery. It’s “a severe, long-lasting form of depression” after childbirth, according to the Mayo Clinic, and it’s often exacerbated when women have endured problematic births with potentially traumatic procedures, such as emergency caesareans. Likewise, the recurrence risk is high for women who’ve struggled with PPD before according to the research published in PLOS Medicine.

Porten’s Facebook post doesn’t mention whether or not she’d experienced PPD with her firstborn, but the research suggests mothers who’ve endured PPD with their first child are more likely to experience it again with subsequent births. A team of Danish researchers conducted a study to describe the risk of postpartum affective disorder (an umbrella term that includes PPD and other postpartum conditions such as postpartum psychosis) among women with no prior psychiatric episodes. By compiling data from national registries, they were able to look at a cohort of 457,317 first-time mothers and their subsequent births between 1996 and 2013.

More: 6 Scientifically Proven Ways to Raise Smarter Kids

The researchers found that 0.6 percent of births resulted in serious PPD. And after the first year postpartum, 27.9 percent of those women were still in treatment for the disorder; after four years postpartum, that percentage dropped to just 5.4 percent. Moreover, the researchers found that the recurrence risk (or the chances of a woman experiencing PPD again) is quite high — 15 percent for women prescribed antidepressants after their first birth and 21 percent for women who were hospitalized for an affective disorder after their first birth. The risk of PPD after a second birth was 26.9 times higher in women who were prescribed antidepressants after their first birth compared to women who had never had PPD and 46.6 times higher in women who had been hospitalized for depression after their first birth.

These mothers who are at a greater risk of PPD need support — both in understanding their condition and in medically treating those conditions. But many of them don’t seek help. And Porten’s story shows us why.

A BabyCenter survey of more than 1,400 mothers and pregnant women called attention to the significant number of women who do not get prompt treatment for PPD: 21 percent of the mothers polled said they had either been given a diagnosis of PPD or felt like they might have it, but an overwhelming 40 percent of them did not seek any medical help for the condition. Why? For 30 percent of them, they felt strong enough to “get over” their feelings without a doctor, and 26 percent said they felt their symptoms were not serious enough to warrant a discussion. Meanwhile, 25 percent said they were too embarrassed to admit their feelings, 23 percent said they felt guilty about those feelings, and 16 percent said they did not want to be labeled as "mentally ill."

And most women probably don't want to be escorted to the ER by the police, either — as Porten was. But we live in a culture that consistently shames both women and mentally ill people of all gender identities, so it’s no surprise mothers have these apprehensions.

Porten made an edit to her Facebook post to explain that, while she won’t be taking legal action, she does want her message to “spread far and wide so that awareness can be made.” She wants to fix what she calls the “broken system.”

“The fact of the matter is, even if I was mentally unstable, suicidal, and unfit to parent (which I am not), the way the situation was handled is not helpful,” she explains. She also asks the following questions to help crowdsource ideas and hopefully inspire change:

  • “Why is the way I was treated standard procedure?
  • “What can we do to improve standard procedures for all postpartum mothers, but also specifically those at a higher risk for developing PPD and presenting with signs of PPD?
  • “Who is most qualified to make suggestions for improvements?
  • “Who is actually capable of making the changes to standard procedures, and how can we can contact them?”

Porten later revised her post to add:

“I may be marginalized as a woman, but I am white and heterosexual and hold privileges in these places. I am scared for our mothers of color and our LGBTQ mothers who seek out help in these situations.

“Why was I let go, when so many others would have been put on a mandatory 72-hour psychiatric hold, and had their children taken away?

“Why do a disproportionate number of women of color who have PPD not receive the services they need, even when they initiate treatment?

“Why are a disproportionate number of women of color who have PPD misdiagnosed?

“Why are black women half as likely to receive mental health treatment and counseling as white women?

“What can we do as a community to lift up our marginalized members and make sure they receive the quality care that we ALL have a right to?!?”

Porten is working with 2020 Mom, the nonprofit host of Federal Maternal Mental Health Lobby Day and a leading advocate for maternal mental health in California. Four bills are currently being introduced, and Porten will be posting the dates, times and locations of #4Bills4CAMoms rallies for anyone who’d like to get involved in the action.

7 Salary-Negotiating Secrets Every Woman Needs to Know

$

So, you nailed the interview and got the job offer — but it’s not anywhere near the salary range you expected. Or you’re job hunting and you stumble when asked those awkward "What are you making now?" questions. You’re definitely not alone. It’s a universal truth that talking money can be hugely uncomfortable — specifically, going back and forth on salary negotiation, something required for you to make the money you deserve.

It’s so not worth it to be polite and accept a lowball offer then regret when you’re not paying off your student loans, saving as much as you’d hoped or just feel overworked and underpaid — a cliché that could potentially be avoided if you know your worth and learn to advocate for yourself on the front end before you accept the job.

Since this is a dicey topic, we consulted three women who know what they’re talking about and got their top tips for negotiating to get the salary you want and deserve.

Give a range

Whether someone asks you in an interview or it’s a box on an application, it’s OK not to give a specific number for your current salary or desired one and instead give a general range. “If you’re able to enter ‘to be discussed,’ that doesn’t paint you into a box,” says Lisa Skeete Tatum, founder and CEO of Landit, a technology platform that aims to increase the success and engagement of women in the workforce.

“If you have to enter a number, hopefully you have done your research and understand your value and the salary range for that position,” she says. “I would anchor at the high end, which will leave you room for negotiation.” If you’re currently making $45,000 and want to make $55,000, you can say that your current salary is in the $50,000 range, and that you’re looking to make in the mid-50s at minimum. That’s honest and accurate and will get you closer to what you’d like to make.

More: 5 Questions to Help You Figure Out if You’re in the Right Career

Do your research

Make sure your salary-related homework is done before going into an interview. Find out what the compensation is for similar roles so you can walk in and ask for the salary you want with confidence. “There are many sites where you can figure out what your projected salary for your line of work and location should be,” says headhunter Nicole McMackin, member of the International Women’s Leadership Association and president of Irvine Technology Corp., a firm that specializes in information-technology solutions and staffing. “I have found sites such as payscale.comsalary.com and livecareer.com are all very helpful in determining appropriate compensation for your skill set.”

Aim high

It’s better to over-ask in the beginning and come down later if necessary than to ask for less than you know you’re worth (or would even accept!) and have to explain that later. While you don’t want to ask for a ridiculously high amount, which could put you at risk of not even being considered for the role, ask for a number within reason that would also be a substantial bump up from what you’re already making.

“My general rule of thumb is to only apply for positions that will pay you at least $20K more than you currently make, unless the opportunity and experience compensate for making far less than that,” says leadership consultant and adviser Dana W. White, author of the new book Leader Designed: Become the Leader You Were Made to Be. “Good people are in high demand! If they want you, they’ll pay. And a few more thousand dollars, even $10 to 20K, means nothing to them compared to what that extra $10 to 20K means to you.”

Ask with confidence

It’s important to believe you’re worth every penny you’re asking a company to pay you. “Have an abundance mindset,” says White. “Don’t walk into negotiations thinking about what you can get or what they’ll give you. Walk into negotiations and ask for what you want. I promise you that no employer is ever going to pay you one cent more than what you are worth, so tell them what you are worth.” And believe it.

More: What to Do When You’re Feeling Stuck at Work

Don’t lie

Some people may advise you to bluff and tell your new employer that you’re making more than you actually are in order to motivate them to offer you more. Sure, it may work for some people, but it’s not a risk worth taking — especially if you really want the job. “Never, ever lie! Your reputation is your most valuable asset in getting any job or promotion,” says White. “People in [the] industry often have very close ties to one another, and there can be a great deal of turnover between companies — you never know who knows who and who will find things out. It’s better to ask for what you want with proof points and be turned down than be caught in a little white lie for a few bucks and ruin your reputation forever.”

Ask for more

If you aren’t offered what you were hoping for the first time around, remember that this is just a starting point for negotiation — and companies are used to the process, even if you aren’t. Be gracious and upbeat, and go back to the table. “I would recommend saying something like, ‘Thank you for the offer and I am looking forward to working alongside you and your team. I was hoping with my years of experience, expertise in X and ability to meet your strategic objectives, I would be receiving a compensation of Y,” says McMackin. It can’t hurt to ask. They’ve already offered you the job, so the worst that happens is you get turned down.

Consider other forms of compensation

If you don’t get the answer you were hoping for, remember that there are other things you can negotiate for — more paid time off, days working from home or an early review to discuss a raise based on your performance. “It’s inevitable that you won’t always get the salary offer you want,” says Skeete Tatum. “The best strategy is to always understand the ‘why’ for the denied request, and based on that information, you can ask to revisit your salary at the next cycle or after milestones or performance have been demonstrated.”
