This Is the Most Nutritious Type of Plant-Based Milk According to a New Study

When it comes to milk, we're no longer limited to what comes from cows. Where there were once one or two options for those who were unable to process dairy, most supermarkets now have an expansive milk section, with plant-based alternatives outnumbering cow milk. But from a nutritional perspective, which type is best for you?

A new study out of McGill University found that although cow milk is still highest in nutrients, soy milk comes in a close second. The research took into consideration the four most-commonly consumed types of milk beverages from plant sources around the world — almond milk, soy milk, rice milk and coconut milk — and compared their nutritional values against those of traditional cow milk.

More: The Anti-inflammatory Diet: Why You Should Try It & How to Start It

But what this study didn't measure are other factors, like the environmental impact of growing the plants required to manufacture these milks or other side effects they could have on your body. The focus of this research was strictly on the nutritional components of the milk. So, does that mean soy milk is the healthiest plant-based milk and best choice for everyone? Definitely not — again, this is just looking at nutritional value.

And although soy milk was found to be the most nutritious, researchers also pointed to concerned over the presence of anti-nutrients — substances that reduce nutrient intake and digestion. Rice milk, while sweet-tasting and an option for those with dairy and soy allergies, has relatively little nutritional value and high levels of carbohydrates.

While almond milk has a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids that are considered helpful in weight management and helps in reduction of bad cholesterol, those who rely solely on this milk alternative also need to seek supplementary nutritional components from other sources.

Coconut milk has few calories, but also little protein. And while drinking it can help reduce bad cholesterol, storing it for two months or more leads to a reduction in nutritional value.

The researchers do note that more work has to be done on both understanding the nutritional profile of the plant-based milks and their processing methods, but at least having some nutrition information is a step in the right direction, allowing consumers to make more informed choices in the grocery store.

Valentine's Day should be spent with your beloved, right? And by "beloved," we obviously mean your pooch. Shake Shack clearly agrees; the burger chain is offering up glittery pink milkshakes in February in support of all those doggos out there.

Called the Love Shack Shake (inspired by the B-52s hit "Love Shack"), the strawberry-blond milkshake is topped with whipped cream and glitter sprinkles. For each shake sold (at $5.99 each), $2 will be donated to nonprofit organization Canine Companions for Independence, which pairs trained assistance dogs with children and veterans as well as adults with disabilities. The dogs are all expertly trained to perform over 40 commands to help those in need — and as of April 2017, Canine Companions for Independence has sponsored and trained over 5,000 dogs.

"At Shake Shack, music is in our DNA — and The B-52's 'Love Shack' holds a particularly special place in our hearts," Shake Shack culinary director Mark Rosati said in a press release. "Between the band's Georgia roots and the song's many glitter references, there was no shortage of inspiration for the Love Shack Shake."

Even Kate Pierson of the B-52s is a fan of the pairing. "We're shakin' with excitement to celebrate Valentine's Day with the Love Shack Shake and even more excited to support the great work of Canine Companions for Independence," she said.

Giving back to the community isn't new to Shake Shack. The chain is a proud member of 1% for the Planet. This means 1 percent of every bottle of water sold supports the cleanup of water sources around the globe.

But there’s a catch. Not only is the Love Shack Shake a limited-edition menu item; it's only available in specific locations in New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta from Feb. 9 to Feb. 18. So, if you're in those cities, you can simultaneously treat yourself and "give a dog a job." Is there any better feeling than that?

Nicole Eggert Details Her Sexual Assault Experience in Megyn Kelly Interview

After first coming forward over the weekend of Jan. 26 with allegations she was sexually assaulted by Scott Baio when she was a minor, actor Nicole Eggert went into greater detail about those allegations during an interview with Megyn Kelly on her show Megyn Kelly Today.

More: Kevin Spacey Will Seek Treatment Following His Sexual Assault Allegations

Eggert said the abuse started on the set of the show she and Baio both starred in, Charles in Charge, in 1986. She was just 14 years old at the time, while Baio was 25.

"He started expressing his love for me and talking about marriage and the future," Eggert explained to Kelly, adding that things allegedly began just before she turned 15, when they "were at his house in his car in his garage, and he reached over and penetrated me with his finger."

"I was very young. It was shocking," Eggert said. "He was playing not only on my emotions, but my hormones and all of those things."

According to Eggert, Baio would manipulate her by telling her not to tell anyone or he could go to jail. He also reportedly told her they would all lose their jobs and the show would end. Eggert said the abuse continued until she was 17 (Baio contends, in his own version of events, that Eggert was 18 at the time) at which time the two began to have sex. Though Eggert said it was consensual, she was uncomfortable.

"I was a willing participant to an extent. There was a lot of manipulation that went into it. It wasn’t a 'hold me down, rape me' situation, but I was 17. […] I just wasn’t ready to tell my story. […] It was upsetting. It wasn’t a good experience at all. […] It was at my house in my spare bedroom. He laid down a towel and it happened there," Eggert recalled. Following the sexual intercourse, Eggert said Baio's attitude toward her changed, and he became cold.

Baio has adamantly denied the accusations, which Eggert first spoke about on Twitter, calling Baio a "creep." Baio took to Facebook where he made a video attempting to dispel any and all of Eggert's claims. "If you have a real claim, you go to the real people, not social media, where people like me get beat up," Baio said in a Facebook Live video. He also said Eggert was the aggressor in the relationship, and he succumbed to her advances like any "red-blooded American" would.

Meanwhile, other former Charles in Charge stars are supporting Eggert's claims of Baio's inappropriate behavior. Castmates Alexander Polinsky and Adam Carl have both said they recalled Baio acting inappropriately on set.

Eggert, along with her high-profile attorney Lisa Bloom, is exploring legal options and is considering filing a police report.

Tom Brady Cuts Interview Short After Host Insults His Daughter

Tom Brady couldn't care less whether you like him — or the Patriots — but you'd better think twice before tearing into his kids. The five-time Super Bowl winner and Pats' star quarterback shut down his weekly interview on the Kirk & Callahan radio show on WEEI on Monday. The reason? Brady — and the rest of the world — was disgusted to hear host Alex Reimer on another talk show Thursday night referring to Brady's daughter (with supermodel Gisele Bündchen) as an "annoying little pissant."

Reimer pissant

Reimer pissant

Seriously, Reimer, what were you thinking? Dude.

Reimer was discussing Brady’s new Tom vs. Time documentary. His comment about Brady and Bündchen's daughter Vivian, age 5, immediately caught a hailstorm of flak — and rightly so. Why go after a kid?

More14 Photos of Tom Brady Simply Being a Dad

On Monday, Brady told Kirk & Callahan on WEEI, “You know, I tried to come on this show for many years and showed you guys a lot of respect. I’ve always tried to come on and do a good job for you guys. It’s very disappointing when you hear [the comments about Vivian], certainly. My daughter, or any child, certainly does not deserve that.”

Both WEEI hosts expressed their apologies to Brady, encouraging him to say whatever he liked in response to Reimer's comments.

“There’s certain things that you understand as an athlete — you’re going to be criticized for what for what you do, on and off the field, as an individual — but for a kid to be criticized is unbelievably stupid,” cohost Kirk Minihane said to Brady. “There’s no defense for it.”

More18 Super Bowl Recipes That Will Score Big

Brady was not in the mood to play nice. He said on air that he would have to reconsider his weekly radio gig with WEEI. “I’ll obviously evaluate whether or not I want to come on this show again. I really don’t have much to say this morning. Maybe I’ll speak with you guys some other time," he said, abruptly ending the interview.

Reimer has been suspended indefinitely. However, Brady said he doesn't want Reimer to be fired for his comments. Brady said during an interview this week at the Xcel Center, "I certainly hope the guy is not fired... I just know everybody is real protective of their kids. I never stayed away from criticism. I understand that criticism is part of sports. But I certainly don't think that my children or anybody else's children deserve to be in that."

We couldn't agree more.

Will The Four Fire Charlie Walk Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations?

The Four, poised to follow in the successful reality TV competition footsteps of The Voice and American Idol, might be over before it has really even gotten started. The show's potential success is currently being overshadowed by new sexual misconduct allegations made against one of the show's judges, record company boss Charlie Walk.

More: Bill O'Reilly Sat Down With Matt Lauer to Address Sexual Harassment Claims

Late in the afternoon on Monday, Jan. 29, Life Lab founder Tristan Coopersmith accused Walk of inappropriate behavior that apparently occurred when she worked for him at Sony Music. In an open letter, Coopersmith alleges that she was subjected to lewd comments and sexually explicit text messages. She also said he groped her at business dinners and tried to push her into bed with him on one occasion.

"I remember the girl that took that job," Coopersmith wrote in her letter. "I remember how confident and vocal she was. How grateful. I remember how motivated and determined she was to crush it, to be a visionary in the industry. But the girl who walked away a year later had shrunk. She no longer looked up when she walked. She became quiet. Her spirit was barely recognizable. She felt confused. She felt diminished. She felt wholeheartedly worthless. She lived in a corrosive pit of shame."

These accusations are causing big problems for Fox execs in charge of The Four, which is in its freshman season. Possible issues arising from Coopersmith's allegations and the subsequent decisions on how to handle them could be tied to the fact that Walk is deeply involved with the show. He isn't just a judge for the show; the winner of the show wins a recording contract with Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, which Walk runs.

Universal Music released a statement saying they are looking into the matter. "While it appears this blog post relates to the period prior to Mr. Walk’s appointment to his position at Republic Records, we take the allegations very seriously and intend to conduct a full and complete review of this matter."

Fox also released a statement on the accusations, explaining, "We are currently reviewing this matter and are committed to fostering a safe environment on all of our shows."

The show premiered on Jan. 4, 2018, and is scheduled to film its final episode in the final week of January.

Ellen DeGeneres Just Won a Huge Interview With America's Favorite First Lady

Michelle Obama will help Ellen DeGeneres celebrate her 60th birthday by appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this Thursday. Obama has already appeared on DeGeneres' show a few times. They memorably danced together to Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" in a 2015 episode to support Obama's efforts to raise awareness for her Gimme Five initiative, which promotes healthier lifestyle choices, and they had a rather hilarious trip to CVS complete with spontaneous wine purchases. Needless to say, there's a lot of love between these two pals, and thankfully, it looks like the lovefest is going to keep going for the occasion of DeGeneres' 60th birthday celebrations on Ellen.

On Monday, Jan. 29, it was announced via a number of outlets, including The Hill, that the former FLOTUS would appear as a guest on Ellen as part of the ongoing celebrations for DeGeneres' 60th birthday. As The Hill reports it, "The audience for the first of two birthday-themed shows will be 'filled with people who are paying it forward' and have participated in DeGeneres’s #OneMillionActsofGood campaign," which only makes this event sound even more special and exciting — the fact that Obama is appearing for an interview is the sweet, sweet cherry on top.

There's no word yet on what we can expect Obama to talk about, but there's no doubt DeGeneres will ask her about her life thus far in 2018, new projects she's working on and maybe even how she thinks President Trump is doing one year into his presidency. Prepare for anything and everything.

This will mark Obama's first interview since leaving the White House. She gave her last interview to Oprah Winfrey back in December 2016 shortly before she and her family left the White House. At the time, her words were somber, as she feared for the future following Donald Trump's election.

"See, now we are feeling what not having hope feels like, you know," Obama said when Winfrey asked her about the success of her husband's Hope campaign. "Hope is necessary. It is a necessary concept. What do you give your kids if you can't give them hope?"

The former first lady is far from the only celebrity who will help DeGeneres celebrate her 60th birthday. Jennifer Aniston is apparently coming along for the ride, and other notable guests will also be on hand for the show. Thankfully, there will two episodes, one on Thursday and one on Friday, to comprise this birthday celebration.

DeGeneres will also reportedly reveal her biggest giveaway in 15 seasons; is anyone else thinking she'll pull an Oprah and give everyone a car, or is it just me?

A source told the outlet Salling's body was found near a riverbed in the Sunland neighborhood of LA close to where he lived. The specific cause of death appears to be hanging. TMZ reports that Salling's body was found hanging from a tree. The news outlet also reports that police officers had been called to Salling's residence to do a welfare check, although it's unclear what the initial reason for the call was or whether Salling had been alive at the time the call was made. A family member had apparently gone to the LAPD around 3 a.m. local time to report that Salling was missing.

"The LAPD did respond to a death investigation at 8:50 this morning at the 11900 block Big Tujunga Canyon Road," an officer told Fox News.

Salling had recently been indicted on charges of child pornography. Over 50,000 images of prepubescent minors were found on his computer and a thumb drive. He pleaded guilty to the charges, and sentencing was set for March. TMZ reports Salling may have previously attempted to commit suicide in August, but his lawyer denied the allegations.

He was facing four to seven years in prison and would have been required to register as a sex offender. He also wouldn't have been allowed to speak to anyone under the age of 18 without a parent or legal guardian present.

Following his prison sentence, he was facing 20 years on parole and would have been required to stay 100 feet away from public swimming pools, playgrounds, video arcades, schoolyards and parks. He would have been required to pay $50,000 in restitution to any victim who requested it. His passport was also revoked.

Salling was best known for his role as Noah "Puck" Puckerman on Glee, which ran from 2009 to 2015.

Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Vagina Dentata

$

Between myths and movies, there are a lot of questions surrounding what exactly vagina dentata are. Translated from Latin, the term means “toothed vagina.” As in, one’s vagina has sharp teeth and could therefore effectively sever a penis whilst participating in penetrative sex.

The myth of vagina dentata has a long history that spans many countries. The idea of a vagina having sharp teeth that could castrate someone seems to be borne of a fear of or feeling of being threatened by the innate power that vagina owners have and many dentata tales end with men successfully removing the teeth and rendering the vagina “safe” for sex.

“I personally love the dentata mythos,” says sex educator Kenna Cook. “I see it as a way for women to reclaim that their vaginas are a powerful, mystical force to be reckoned with — unlike the delicate flower analogy we are socialized to buy in to.”

More: The Impact of Sexual Harassment on Mental Health

Dr. Elizabeth Trattner believes we can connect the vagina dentata myth to women-led movements against sexual harassment and abuse.

“As throngs of men have been rightfully shamed in public for sexually harassing women, men are now in fear of any and all transgressions in their pasts," she says. "After thousands of years of women being dominated and abused by men — mentally, emotionally and physically — women are finally calling the whistle on any and all male predators. As we cheer out loud of the righting of the wrong, there is a dark side in men’s minds that women now are personifying the mythic vagina dentata.”

The concept of vagina dentata shows up across most major Eastern and Western religions according to Bailey Gaylin Moore, a writer who’s working on a collection of essays about vaginas, including vagina dentata.

Pop culture makes vagina dentata a case for female empowerment, but historically, it’s been used as a method to instill fear of women and therefore reinforcing a patriarchal power paradigm,” she says.

More: What's Normal — & Not Normal — During a Massage?

In her essay on vagina dentata, Moore references the Rape-aXe condom, invented by Dr. Sonnet Ehlers/Bryant, a South African activist, in response to the high occurrence of rape across the continent. The condom mimics the myth of vagina dentata — it’s an elastic sheath that actually contains razor-sharp barbs. You insert it into your vagina, and if you’re penetrated, the attacker will end up with the condom on their penis. It will render them incapacitated, and it can only be removed by a clinician. (The Rape-aXe, of course, doesn’t actually prevent vaginal rape, since the penis must penetrate in order for it to be effective.)

Sometimes, though, vagina dentata isn’t totally a myth. It’s rare, says Trattner, but dermoid cysts, which are made up of embryonic cells containing teeth, hair, sweat glands and even eyes do exist. While you usually can’t see the teeth, and they aren’t anywhere near as sharp as those of the legendary dentata, Trattner has seen several patients in her practice with ovarian dermoid cysts, which actually make up 20 percent of all ovarian tumors and are generally found during routine pelvic exams and assessed via a transvaginal ultrasound. Like other ovarian cysts, you often don’t know you have one unless you’re very uncomfortable or it bursts, which can be a dangerous situation. (A vaginal dermoid cyst is a super-rare find.)

Dermoid tumors grow slowly and don’t usually get very big, but leaving them alone can interfere with your reproductive health, causing fertility challenges. If you do choose to have them out, it’s usually done through laparoscopy or a cystectomy — that’s when you remove a cyst by going through the belly button.

“The myth of vagina dentata warns men not to take what isn’t theirs,” says Trattner. “Vaginas are a sacred space and need to be mature enough to enter them. Almost every culture has a myth of vagina dentata, a warning to be careful where you put your penises. Currently, we are seeing the vagina roar with brave women coming forward and outing men who have done them wrong. Is this vagina dentata really the heroine who lies inside of all of us warning all men ‘don’t mess with me or I will bite back and destroy you.'”

More: Our Narrow View of Sexual Assault Is Letting People Get Away With It

By the way, if you haven’t seen Teeth, a really dark comedy released in 2007, the heroine, Dawn, has vagina dentata that (literally) take down more than one man, biting off penises and leading to actual death. She learns, though, that when she’s feeling relaxed and when sex is consensual, her teeth don’t bite. When she’s in a dangerous situation, however, they wreak havoc. Her dentata serve as protection for her and as punishment for men who want to hurt her. Dawn’s in charge of discerning how to use them, and (spoiler) by the end of the film, she is done being nice.

Ideally, we'd all live in a world where we wouldn't need vagina teeth (real or figurative) to fully take ownership of our bodies, but until then, this may not be the worst medical myth out there.

Kate Middleton Starts 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy by... Playing Ice Hockey?!

Not only is the Duchess of Cambridge, formerly Kate Middleton, arguably the most beloved duchess on the planet, she is now most definitely the favorite duchess of Swedish bandy hockey players. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — that is, Prince William and Kate Middleton — kicked off their four-day (child-free!) trip to Sweden and Norway with a little friendly competition on the ice.

Bandy hockey is a close cousin to American ice hockey; it's played with a curved stick and a ball on ice. (Hey, it's even in the Winter Olympics now!) William and Kate were happy to give the sport a try at an outdoor ice rink in Stockholm on Tuesday. The folks at the rink were delighted to roll out a red carpet for the royal couple to stand on for a penalty shoot-out. The duchess is in her third trimester of pregnancy now — hence avoiding donning actual skates.

William and Kate had a terrific time trying to score goals, with William edging out Kate, 2 – 1. Local bandy players were thrilled to meet the duchess and the prince — and the internet pretty much can't get enough of the fun winter pics of the couple in full-on play mode. I mean, come on. Best royals ever.

Kate Middleton plays bandy

The royal couple is staying at the home of the British ambassador in Stockholm. The duke and duchess also attended a luncheon hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at the Royal Palace of Stockholm (no biggie) where they visited with Crown Princess Victoria and her husband, Prince Daniel. Victoria and Daniel and Kate and Will no doubt talked kids: The crown princess and her husband have Princess Estelle, 5, and Prince Oscar, 1. There's no word on whether or not George and Charlotte are now betrothed to the Swedish heirs, but monarchies are looking kind of fab lately, so we're all for it. Maybe we Americans can get in on some more monarchy action if we arrange a marriage between a tiny princess in Scandinavia with one of the new crop of Kardashians? No? Fine.

Kate will be missing one single event during their visit to Norway to ensure she's getting enough rest. Royal lunching, bandy hockey and only one event crossed off the schedule? Kate may not be the queen, but she's definitely the queen of pregnancy goals. And, you know, ice hockey goals.

Hilaria Baldwin Opens Up About Pregnancy B.S.

In a recent photo Hilaria Baldwin posted to Instagram, she's standing next to a mirror. Her iPhone is aimed at her reflection. She wears a black lace bra and matching underwear and the coverage is equivalent to that of a bathing suit. Soft bathroom lighting illuminates the curve of her growing belly; she's pregnant with her fourth child with actor Alec Baldwin. A "bump shot" like this is uncommon on Instagram, and certainly on Baldwin's page –– but, unfortunately, neither are the comments that immediately start to roll in.

"It’s not normal to be posing in your lace underwear and posting it on Instagram to show how your pregnancy is going."

"We’ve seen this pose over and over, and if you can’t be as elegant as Demi, then do not try."

"Why so many kids?"

"She just makes women feel shittier. I can’t stand her."

"Yuck."

About the criticism, the author and mom of three tells SheKnows, “It hurts. People always assume you get used to it, but, no, you don’t get used to it.”

Still, Baldwin says that’s the whole point of her posts: to bring awareness to this backward way of thinking and of treating people on the internet. Comments like these, Baldwin says, are what led her to become more private during her first pregnancy — with her daughter, Carmen.

“I had struggled with an eating disorder as a child and young adult,” Baldwin says. “Even though I was in a great place with eating, all of a sudden I was thrown into a completely different form than what I was used to.”

When she was asked to pose for a photo shoot with her belly exposed, Baldwin says she balked at the idea. “I was very against it and nervous about it,” she says. But when she became pregnant with her son, Rafael, Baldwin says she decided to shift her perspective — not just for herself, but to help normalize pregnancy changes and self-love for her fans.

“When anybody’s talking about or is passionate about something, it’s either because it’s something they’ve worked on or something they are continuing to work on,” Baldwin says of her body-positive mission. “And that was definitely part of it for me.”

More: Tammy Duckworth Will Be the First U.S. Senator to Give Birth While in Office

Scroll through Baldwin’s Instagram and you’ll find multiple posts during her pregnancies with Rafael and Leonardo that show off her changing shape — not quite as many during her most recent pregnancy, Baldwin notes, because it turns out three kids can keep you rather busy. And on the flip side, Baldwin also shares photos of her postpartum body; she even posted a photo in the hospital bathroom after Leonardo was just 24 hours old.

“It always makes me a bit nervous to do something like this, but I feel that in the age of such strong body-shaming, I want to do all I can to normalize a real body and promote healthy self-esteem,” she captioned the post. Of course, it's worth mentioning that Baldwin is a white, straight, thin, able-bodied, cisgender and conventionally attractive famous person, which means she is likely only facing the tip of the iceberg that is the internet (and IRL) body-shaming so many women and people of all genders must endure. But that doesn't mean she isn't struggling.

Plus, being a famous person means Baldwin has a greater reach and platform to receive support — and to receive criticism. In fact, she says being in the public eye definitely affected her decision to speak out; she wanted to reach and inspire more people. “I am a teacher. I believe I was put on this Earth to help other people; that is why I became a yoga teacher,” the longtime yoga practitioner says.

This is the philosophy behind Baldwin's recent book, The Living Clearly Method: 5 Principles for a Fit Body, Healthy Mind & Joyful Life, which includes tips for finding balance and perspective in the midst of everyday situations. Baldwin says she tried to make content accessible by pulling from her own (awkward, painful, hilarious) experiences as a mom. For instance, the other day, she was about to head out the door with her husband for his SNL appearance when she looked down and realized she had poop on her dress.

“I didn’t know which of my two sons it actually came from,” she tells us, laughing. “It was one of those things where I thought, 'I could get upset and stress about it, or I could be, like, whatever. I’m going to change my clothes.' So, I just changed my clothes, you know?”

Baldwin explains that her goal is to help people manage those everyday stressors by thinking, "How can I handle it and move on?" Of course, that attitude doesn’t always come easily, Baldwin adds, and it’s a concept she had to work on when she was grappling with her body image.

“I’m extremely happy with my body now,” she says. “But when I wasn’t in that frame of mind, I would say, "I am struggling because it is my job to help people, and I am going to learn these things and learn them really well so I can pass on this information and be really present for it.'”

A self-described problem-solver, Baldwin says she will research something until she comes up with a solution that feels good to her. “Never am I just like, 'Oh, I don’t know. I give up.' I’m very focused on a solution for everything.”

More: Mom-Shamers Attack Jessica Simpson for Sexy Photo

Part of her recipe for self-love, Baldwin says, came from Oriah Mountain Dreamer’s "The Invitation," which includes a passage that says, “I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.” It's a mantra Baldwin has repeated time and time again because for a long time, she didn’t like to be alone with herself. Instead, like so many of us, she used distractions (tech, work, parties) to avoid getting to know herself on a deeper level.

But now? "I’m getting to the point where I am never alone with myself,” she says, laughing. “But in the rare moments that I am alone, I really enjoy my company.” Today, Baldwin says, she is happy — not only with her body, but with the person she has become. Let's hope we all get there someday.

7 Under-the-Radar Ways to Improve Your Online Job Hunt.

It’s 2018 and a brave new era in which people are meeting their matches online more than ever — and not just romantic ones. It won’t surprise you to find out that 54 percent of Americans use the internet to research job listings and 45 percent apply online (actually, if anything, those stats seem low!). So, while having a great résumé is key and knowing how to network will always be valuable, it’s more important than ever to also understand how to job-hunt online effectively — without wasting your time or messing up your own chances unwittingly.

What job-hunting rules should you follow when it comes to looking online for a new gig? Here, a few experts weigh in on what you may be failing to do to land a job using the internet.

Leverage LinkedIn

You don’t have to be a search engine optimization expert to know what keywords can grab attention. Just think of the jobs you want to attract in your field and some marketing buzzwords, and cram them into your profile title. Nix the name of your employer in your profile title and save the space for more keywords that can grab attention. If you’re a marketing associate, for example, try something more focused, like “direct marketing leader in B2B information technology.” You want something that goes more in depth but is broad enough to encompass what you do and what role you’re looking for.

Look where others aren’t

Some of the best projects I’ve worked on came because I approached companies that weren’t necessarily hiring in my role. “Instead, use the job boards to identify which employers are hiring. It doesn’t matter whether they’re hiring at your level or for your specialty or not. All you need to see is that they’re hiring at all because that means they’re growing,” Jewel Bracy Demaio, a résumé and job search coach, wrote in Forbes. She advises using social media (or try the corporate website) to pinpoint the relevant contact person at the company and then pitch yourself. Sure, it’s a little “cyberstalker-esque,” but it works!

Customize each application

Want to tailor your cover letter or résumé for a specific job? You should! Check out the job description and do more than see if you meet the criteria — home in on the wording. Use buzzwords or similar concepts when showing how you have the experience needed to do the tasks the job requires. Applicant tracking systems will scan for keywords, and you want your résumé to use the same language as companies and their recruiters. “If you don’t have a job posting because you are sending a résumé directly to an employer, you can research similar positions on a job board like Indeed to find key terms to use in your resume,” Jessica H. Hernandez, an executive résumé writer, advised in a post on LinkedIn.

More: What to Do When You’re Feeling Stuck at Work

Look beyond title

You know the role you want, but if you only type in the title into a search engine, you may pass up similar roles that a company labels under another title. Type your industry into the search prompt or add a portion of the title in. For instance, I work mostly as a copywriter, and that work can include writing blog posts — so I also may search for “blogger” roles too.

Stay safe

We focus so much on what to put on your résumé or say during an interview that we sometimes forget about safety online. “When you’re searching for jobs online, it’s vital to keep yourself safe,” says Brie Weiler Reynolds, a senior career specialist at FlexJobs. “While many job scams are obvious to job seekers, there are some very sophisticated job scams out there that can take people by surprise. Be wary of recruiters reaching out to you out of the blue to offer you jobs or interviews. And keep in mind that some scammers are impersonating well-known companies to lure job seekers in with a false sense of security at seeing a big-name company that may want to hire them.”

Weiler Reynolds recommends doing research on any companies that reach out to you and not putting your full street address on a résumé that can be viewed by the public. “Trust your gut! Most of the job seekers I’ve heard from who’ve been scammed say they felt something was off during the process but they wanted a job so badly they kept going and ignored that gut instinct,” Weiler Reynolds said.

Let ‘em know you’re looking

One way to get job opportunities coming to you is to activate your LinkedIn Open Candidate signal. This can privately alert recruiters that you are on the lookout for opportunities without letting the recruiter at your current employer see it. Want to get started? Go to the Jobs section of your LinkedIn profile and then click on Career Interests. From there, turn on the button to let recruiters know you’re open to new opportunities and complete a few questions about what you’re on the hunt for.

Go old-fashioned

Sure, knowing how to land an interview is great, but what happens afterward? Today’s digital mavens may follow up with an email, but a call or handwritten note can have a lasting impact — mainly because it offers a personal touch that email can’t deliver. Many job seekers fail to follow up after an interview at all; if you want to go for the job, get back in touch in a truly personable way. After all, the digital space is nice, but sometimes human-to-human interaction is even better.

Omarosa Is a Millionaire Now Thanks to Her Celebrity Big Brother Paycheck

It looks like Omarosa Manigault won't have to worry about pinching the pennies until she finds her next well-paying gig because that day has finally arrived.

More: Robin Roberts Completely Dismissed Omarosa Live on TV

It's being reported by Radar Online that Manigault may stand to make as much as $1 million for appearing on the U.S. edition of Celebrity Big Brother. While that quote should be taken with a grain of salt given the source, it would make sense, especially since it's being reported that that $1 million also includes what Manigault would earn for a talk show she has in the works.

More: Donald Trump Just Hired His Favorite Reality Star (Other Than Himself)

To be clear, $1 million is a bananas amount of money regardless. That said, the fact that Manigault reportedly only made around $180,000 while working at the White House as part of President Trump's staff means this pay increase is lucrative to say the least. There are no details at the time of reporting on whether or not any of Manigault's Celebrity Big Brother costars — including Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath, American Pie star Shannon Elizabeth and Real Housewives alum Brandi Glanville — will be making as much as Manigault, but I'd say her agent deserves an Edible Arrangement for the negotiating it likely took to get their client, who was apparently fired from her last job, such an exorbitant payout.

Manigault's first post-White House gig has been met with some derision from the public. When the cast for the 2018 season of Celebrity Big Brother was announced, Twitter nearly blew up with reactions to Manigault's casting. While it appears the general vibe of the reactions is curiosity (seeing as it's been a hot second since she's appeared on a reality TV show), others are wondering if her time working at Trump's White House will come into the conversation or have any effect on her personality.

Manigault has yet to comment on the amount of money she may or may not be making for appearing on Celebrity Big Brother. What can be confirmed at this time is that things are about to get pretty frickin' interesting no matter what, because whenever Manigault shows up, drama is sure to follow.

Chelsea Clinton, Gwyneth Paltrow & Other Women Win Voices of the Year Awards

The last year has been one of historic highs and extreme lows. On one hand, we've lost progress on climate change, we're more divided across party lines than ever, and we're faced with a rotating cast of high-profile men who have used their power to abuse women. On the other hand, this has also been a monumental time for women's rights. From the Women's March to the silence-breakers who came forward and shared their stories as part of the #MeToo movement, women are making one thing clear: We've had enough.

On Tuesday night, SheKnows Media kicked off the BlogHer18 Health conference in New York with the Voices of the Year Awards, honoring some of the biggest female change-makers of our times. Among them was Chelsea Clinton, who relieved the Call to Action award for her work with The Clinton Foundation. In her acceptance, Clinton expressed how important this moment in history is, not only for women today, but for future generations, saying, "I hope that my children will have the same benefit and challenge of growing up with the expectation of engagement."

Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, the journalists who broke the history-making Harvey Weinstein story for the New York Times last fall, also received an award for their bravery. Onstage, Twohey spoke about the significance of the #MeToo movement: "This is the first time that women were able to come forward with their allegations without fear of being shamed, of being abused in the public spotlight. But it wasn’t just the predators that came into focus — it was also the systemic failures that have allowed them to operate unchecked."

Gwyneth Paltrow received the Trailblazer award for founding and growing her company, Goop. Her dedication to starting a business from scratch has inspired other women to take risks and pursue their own goals, no matter how big those goals are. In a taped video acceptance speech, Gwyneth said, “I never let go of my vision — I just see a bull’s-eye, and it might be really far away, but I’m just going straight for it.”

Also present to receive awards were Bob Bland, Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour, founders of the Women’s March Global. "When we say 'women's rights,' we mean all women," Perez said, to cheers from the crowd. Other honorees included artist Krista Suh, creator of the Pussyhat Project, and Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, whose daughter Kaia accepted the award on her behalf.

Shannon Miller on Why You Need to Make Your Health a Priority

When the world first got to know gymnast Shannon Miller, she was competing in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics as an elite global athlete. But fast-forward to 2011, and a tough workout for Miller involved two trips around her dining room table — that's how much ovarian cancer took out of her.

"I couldn’t open a bottle of water by myself for almost a year," said Miller, who was the emcee for the 2018 Voices of the Year Health Awards at the inaugural BlogHer Health event. "I wasn't competing for gold. I was competing for life." The seven-time Olympic medalist shared her story to drive home the importance of women speaking up when something doesn't feel right about their bodies. "I urge you to take care of yourself and your own health," she told the audience. "It is not selfish to make your own health a priority."

Despite the fact that ovarian cancer is the fifth-most common cause of cancer death in women, it's not one that's talked about much — something Miller is working to change. Initially, she overlooked common ovarian cancer symptoms, like a persistent stomachache, bloating and fatigue, writing them off as part of everyday life. During a routine medical appointment, a doctor found a baseball-size cyst, which turned out to be cancerous, on her ovary.

MoreJanet Mock on Changing the World Through Storytelling

“I thought maybe it was my post-baby body — it was a little out of whack,” Miller said. “Maybe it was stress; maybe I ate something bad. It was so easy to find numerous reasons why this wasn’t a big deal, and I pushed all of these symptoms aside. I should have listened to my body. I should have told my doctor how I was feeling, and instead, I told him I felt fine. The fact is, we know our bodies better than anyone else; we just have to pay attention. We have to speak up when something isn't right.”

After that, Miller began aggressive chemotherapy to treat the cancer and embarked on her post-treatment journey. She said that at the time, she wishes she had more resources to help find her "new normal" as she recovered. But more than resources, she said that people going through ovarian cancer — whether themselves or a loved one — need a community. "You need access to others going through a similar diagnosis," she said. "We all need those stories of hope to get through."

In addition to using the power of her own story, Miller highlighted the work of other women who received Voices of the Year Awards in health for using their voices and creativity to make a difference. The awards, now in their 11th year, honor content creators, influencers and advocates whose work deserves to be heard, seen and read — this year, specifically in the health and wellness space.

“It’s an honor to be part of the first ever VOTY Health Awards, which recognize the achievements of women who have used their voice to make a difference,” Miller said. “I’m thrilled to have partnered with Tesaro to share my story with ovarian cancer and educate others about an important program called Our Way Forward that provides resources for those facing ovarian cancer and their families.”

Other VOTY honorees included: Jessamyn Stanley, an internationally recognized yoga teacher and author of Every Body Yoga (the VOTY: Health Inspiration Award); Cleo Wade, a poet and author of the new book Heart Talk (the VOTY Award for Heart + Soul); Daysha Edewi, a former video producer for BuzzFeed who chronicled her journey to health (the VOTY Award for Authenticity); Jen James, a Crisis Text Line founding supervisor for her “My Life as a Survivor” article about overcoming her own struggles with suicide (the VOTY Courage Award); and Kimberly Zapata, a writer and mental health advocate for her article in which she points to the death of the Linkin Park frontman to destigmatize suicide (the VOTY Spotlight Award). Finally, singer and Harvard student Brynn Elliott received a VOTY Award for Empowerment Through Artistry and opened the celebration with an acoustic performance of her single, “Might Not Like Me.”

“Congratulations to all of the Voices of the Year Health Awards honorees, who bravely wield their influence and experiences to bring about positive change,” said Samantha Skey, president of SheKnows Media. “Their work makes us feel, think, reflect and want to be part of the solution as it relates to important issues affecting women’s health and well-being.”

As women like Miller and the VOTY honorees remind us, before we can create change in the world, women must first care for themselves.

Does Counting Calories Even Matter?

Healthy eating (and maintaining an ideal body weight) is part of life for many people, and there are gobs of ways you can go about it. Counting calories is one well-known strategy for many — after all, if you're taking in fewer calories than you're burning, you should lose weight, right? After all, the Centers for Disease Control has a whole page on the topic. Well, although this has been a basic tenet of weight loss and healthy eating in the U.S. for decades, there is some recent research that shows it may not be the best way to go about it. Here are the pros and cons of counting calories with a few experts who have experience and knowledge on their side.

Calories only represent part of the nutritional story

While it does make sense that caloric deficits can lead to weight loss, these little units of measurements aren't the whole story according to Dr. Paul Sacher, registered dietitian and Slimming World chief research and development officer.

"Anyone who has been on a traditional diet or counted calories will know just how miserable feeling hungry and deprived can make you, and even someone with strong willpower is unlikely to be able to sustain this type of plan for any length of time," he explains.

More: How a Weight Loss Retreat Change My View of My Body

Rather than relying on basic math and looking at the caloric content of the foods you eat, it's important to look at other factors within the foods themselves. "Instead of counting calories, looking at food through the lens of energy density (the calories per gram in a food) and satiety (how filling a food is) will allow people to eat a long list of everyday foods that are low in calories and highly satisfying freely without weighing, measuring or counting," he says.

In other words, the more satisfying a food is, the more likely it is to keep you full for a longer period of time, which results in a huge win — you don't have to number-crunch every bite that passes your lips, and you can lose weight without feeling like you're going to starve to death. Sacher notes that foods that are more satisfying include items like grains, pasta, fish, lean meats, eggs, fruits, vegetables and potatoes.

Calories matter, but this depends on a few factors

Haley Hughes, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, says calories do matter, but not necessarily from a straight number standpoint. "Counting calories is not always the perfect solution for weight management," she notes. If someone focuses on a strict calorie count, they're not looking at the bigger nutritional picture and how your food affects not only your weight, but your health.

More4 Totally Realistic Things You Can Do Today to Start Improving Your Health

If you focus on calories only, your diet may be lacking important components that, if they're missing, can negatively affect your health — namely, heart-healthy fats, fiber and protein. "When is comes to general health, it's important to eat a variety of foods that accommodate your body's functional needs and energy expenditure," she explains.

Counting calories can be an eye-opener

On the other hand, it's possible that you really have no idea how many calories you're consuming every day, and calorie counting may work for you, says Pam Sherman, a certified personal trainer with 21 years of experience. She says that calorie counting "in the old days" (with pen and paper) has now evolved with the proliferation of smartphones and health/fitness apps, such as My Fitness Pal, which makes calorie counting easier than ever. She says through all her years of experience, she's never had a client lose weight successfully without keeping a journal or using such an app.

"People usually are shocked by how many calories are in things like a coffee drink or a restaurant meal," she says. "Tracking gets them honest about what and how much they eat."

MoreWhy Are We So Fascinated by Celebrity Body-Shaming?

Calories do count... to a point

So, yes, calories do matter from a basic standpoint — if you're hoping to lose weight, you should strive to consume fewer calories than you burn. But it may not be the perfect answer you're looking for, and cutting calories may leave you nutritionally deficient — it's important to find a balance that works for you. Also, there may be other strategies that work better (such as time-restricted feeding, where you only eat during certain hours of the day).

The bottom line is that calories do matter, but you don't necessarily have to count them down to the very last crumb.

5 Noninvasive Plastic Surgery Options That Are More Popular Than Ever

As much as we love to preach the idea that a woman’s choices — especially regarding physical appearance — are her own, plastic surgery is still considered taboo and routinely placed under heavy scrutiny. So it’s no wonder that noninvasive procedures or those that don’t require anesthesia and instruments within the body are gaining the same traction as more traditional ones, like breast enhancement or rhinoplasty.

Although more than 1 million Americans are still going under the knife every year, advanced technology has made it possible to get the same results with less pain, less time and in some cases less money — a trifecta of benefits for men and women who are busier than ever. Procedures like CoolSculpting (the destruction of fat cells) have made headlines in recent years, but in 2018, there are a handful of other treatments slowly making their way into the limelight.

Ahead, four well-known professionals share the most popular options at their practice and why patients are going crazy for them.

Selfie sculpting

Dr. Rian Maercks, a Florida- and New York-based aesthetic, craniofacial and reconstructive plastic surgeon, says its name comes from the incredible pervasiveness of social media and selfie culture. The goal of selfie-sculpting is to create the illusion of a slimmer, more defined face with elevated cheeks and brows and more open eyes.

“People are spending a lot of effort to play with light, filters and programs to perfect their appearance posting on social media every day…Think of it as a real-life photoshopping of a person’s face.”

The procedure itself takes 15 to 30 minutes and either utilizes off-the-shelf fillers, the patient’s own fat or even special amniotic membrane-derived filler material. Although the timing is pretty short, it’ll still cost you.

“The average patient spends around $9,000 on selfie sculpting, but the range is generally $4,000 to over $6,000, depending on budget, patient desires and regions treated.”

Tip flip

Maercks is also keeping busy with the tip flip, a five-minute nonsurgical rhinoplasty (also known as a nose job). Although every individual’s goals are tailored to them (removing bumps, straightening, etc.), the base of everyone’s nose tends to lose volume over time; a tip flip reverses this effect by “creating nasal projection and rotating the tip of the nose up.”

Unlike selfie sculpting, this one is a little more cost-effective, ranging from $2,000 to $4,000.

Injectable facial rejuvenation

Dr. Steven Cohen, a San Diego-based surgeon, is seeing an uptick in facial fillers powered by stem cell technology. At his office, Faces+, he’s optimized fat grafting with a procedure that changes the rate of tissue decay, which in turn addresses the root cause of aging instead of masking it with a quick fix.

In a simple outpatient, turbo-charged session, Cohen harvests fat — two to three times more than any other doctor — through a needle incision. The fat is morcellized into three different densities using cutting-edge instruments and injected into the face to address individual areas of decaying tissue. It repairs and stimulates the soft tissue, creating new blood vessels and combating inflammation.

“With ITR, we actually are changing the rate of tissue decay by adding biological tissue volume and mass back to the face and regenerating blood supply. To my knowledge, this is the first time a concept of decay and replacement has been conceived and implemented to treat facial aging in a dynamic fashion.”

Cohen likes to treat patients proactively at the earliest signs of damage, if not before, as tissue decay begins at maturity in our 20s. And it’ll cost you around $6,000.

Miradry

Dr. Elie Levine of Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC is seeing more men and women who want to downsize or completely eliminate sweat and odor from the underarm area. This is done through a one-hour procedure called Miradry that costs approximately $2,000.

Levine laser lift

Levine also has a custom version InMode FaceTite, another contouring procedure that eliminates fine lines, sagging skin and other signs of aging. It’s similar to selfie sculpting and facial rejuvenation since it makes the face look fuller and more youthful. Levine describes it as a liposuction and lower face fat transfer (when applicable) to the lower third of the face.

“This minimally invasive, virtually scarless procedure for the lower face and neck rejuvenation has minimal downtime and spectacular improvement. Depending on the procedure, cost ranges from approximately $3,000 to $10,000.”

United Airlines Denied Boarding to a Traveler's Emotional-Support Peacock

If you ever asked yourself, "Can peacocks fly?" The answer is no — at least not on a United Airlines flight.

This past Saturday at Newark Liberty International Airport, the airlines turned away an emotional-support peacock, telling NBC News that it "did not meet guidelines for a number of reasons, including its weight and size." The airline continued to say in its statement that they explained it to the customer on three separate occasions before they arrived at the airport.

"That just happened. What the hell, New York?" the woman commentator adds.

This incident follows a Delta airlines statement released on Jan. 19 announcing new requirements regarding emotional-support animals.

"Customers have attempted to fly with comfort turkeys, gliding possums known as sugar gliders, snakes, spiders and more," Delta said. "Ignoring the true intent of existing rules governing the transport of service and support animals can be a disservice to customers who have real and documented needs."

According to the statement, starting March 1, passengers with service animals are required to submit paperwork two full days before flying.

United Airlines is on board with that policy as well. According to the airlines' statement to NBC News on emotional-support animals, customers are required to "provide documentation from a medical professional and at least 48 hours advance notice."

It is unclear if the passenger and her peacock made it to their destination, but 18 hours ago, a photo was posted on Dexter's Instagram account (yes, it has its own Instagram account!) that seems to show they made it as far as Miami OK.

Those craving a Saved by the Bell fix will soon get one — when the unofficial Saved by the Bell diner, Saved by the Max, opens up in Los Angeles in May.

Saved by the Max actually got its start in Chicago in June of 2016 and put fans of the diner through quite the roller coaster of emotions. First, the diner shut its doors exactly a year after opening (it is a pop-up diner after all). Then four months later, another surprise hit YouTube: an announcement from none other than Mr. Belding himself (Dennis Haskins) announcing the diner would reopen — in sunny West Hollywood.

On the menu, you'll find some most appropriately named items, such as the Bayside Burger and Max's Magical Sweet Tooth. In Chicago, the diner even offered a prix fixe menu for $45 — something we'll likely (hopefully!) see at the Los Angeles location as well.

I mean, come on: Just look at this Twinkie ice cream dessert.

You might even spot some '90s-inspired engagement proposals at Saved by the Max. "I looked over and saw this guy proposing to his girlfriend, who was dressed as Kelly Kapowski," Derek Berry, one of three partners behind the diner, told Los Angeles Magazine. "It was surprising, touching, a little weird, and mostly awesome."
