Hillary Clinton Sent Donald Trump a Pretty Big Message From the Grammys

0
0

The Grammys were just last night, Sunday, Jan. 28, but already, some people are looking ahead to the 2019 awards. The Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album went posthumously to Carrie Fisher for her reading of her memoir, The Princess Diarist. But James Corden has his sights set on a possible winner for next year: Michael Wolff's bombshell exposé of the first year in the Trump White House, Fire and Fury. All he needs is the perfect narrator.

"We know that our current president loves winning awards, and the good news for him is he may just be the subject of next year's winner," Corden said of his quest. "The question I've got is: Who will be the narrator?"

Then a pretaped segment played showing all kinds of celebrities "auditioning" for Corden's project by reading some of the more inflammatory passages of the book. "Hopefuls" included John Legend, Snoop Dogg, DJ Khaled, Cher, Cardi B and one very special guest who popped up at the end.

"If Trump wasn't having his 6:30 dinner with Steve Bannon, then, more to his liking, he was in bed at that time with a cheeseburger," Cardi B read, adding, "Why am I reading this shit? I can't believe he really… This is how he lives his life?"

Cher, with an impressive deadpan, read, "His comb-over... the color was a product called Just for Men — the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump's orange-blond hair color."

But the real highlight of the bit was when Trump's former political opponent, Hillary Clinton, came on-screen.

"He had a longtime fear of being poisoned, one reason why he liked to eat at McDonald's," she read. "[N]obody knew he was coming and the food was safely premade."

Clinton definitely gets our vote. And considering other powerhouse politicians like Barack Obama and her husband, Bill Clinton, have already won the Grammy, she'd be in good company.

6 Uncommon Herbs You Might Start Seeing on Grocery Shelves

0
0

Basil, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, sage… fresh herbs are a huge part of what makes a bland dish a stunning one. But you might be surprised to know there's a whole world of herbs outside the ones you most commonly use to stuff a turkey or season a salsa. According to the National Restaurant Association, one of the biggest food trends of 2018 will be uncommon herbs. Since grocery stores respond to demand, it’s not too big a leap to think some of these less popular herbs may start showing up in the produce department or at your local farmers market.

Chervil

Uncommon Herbs: Chervil

Chervil is an herb most commonly used in French cooking, particularly to flavor mild dishes like poultry, seafood, soups, sauces and young spring vegetables. It tastes like a cross between parsley and tarragon, which make for solid substitutes for the real thing, but has hints of other flavors like licorice. It’s sometimes called garden chervil or French parsley. It’s a softer herb, so it doesn’t need prolonged cooking time and can be added as a finishing touch to a dish.

Lovage

Uncommon Herbs: Lovage

Lovage tastes like a mix between cilantro and celery, but the flavors are very strong. The leaves are tasty in salads and soups or on fish and poultry. The roots can be eaten as a vegetable, and the seeds can be ground as well. You can use it anywhere you might use celery or parsley.

Lemon balm

Uncommon Herbs: Lemon balm

You may have heard of this herb being used in tea, in part because alternative medicine suggests it has a calming effect. Also delicious in ice cream, fruit, candy and fish recipes, the leaves of the lemon balm plant have a mild lemon flavor.

Pápalo

Uncommon Herbs: Papalo

Also known as Bolivian coriander, mampuritu and killi, among other names, this herb is perfect if you love Latin American food. It is popular in salsas in Mexico and South America or as a garnish on Latin American dishes. This herb tastes a bit like a very strong cross between cilantro and arugula.

Shiso

Uncommon Herbs: Shiso

With a scent and flavor similar to cinnamon and clove, the herb is often described as refreshing and is popular in Japanese dishes, particularly sushi. You might have also tasted it as part of a furikake garnish.

Summer savory

Uncommon Herbs: Summer savory

Especially popular in Eastern Canada, summer savory has a slightly peppery flavor and is used in hearty, savory dishes much like sage is used elsewhere. Pork, beef, grilled meats, soups and barbecue all benefit from the flavor. You might have tasted it before, as it’s a main ingredient in herbes de Provence.

Chrissy Teigen Ended Grammys Night With a Gender Reveal

We told you it was a boy.

Model and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen confirmed — in low-key fashion — that she and husband John Legend are expecting a son. Last night, Sunday, Jan. 28, the couple attended the 2018 Grammy Awards in New York City in high style, with Teigen dazzling in a sparkling belted silver gown accentuating her very pregnant belly. Later that night, Teigen posted a red carpet shot of herself on Instagram, captioned simply, "Mama and her baby boy."

Teigen and Legend already parents to 21-month-old daughter Luna Simone — and Teigen and Legend were obviously in a hurry to get back to her after all that Grammys revelry. Teigen tweeted a post-Grammy selfie captioned, "mom and dad home by 10:30!"

Ryan Seacrest nabbed Legend and Teigen on the red carpet at the event, asking Legend — a 10-time Grammy winner with 28 nominations — if he was going to knock back a few stiff drinks before presenting an award at the ceremony. Legend confessed to a single whiskey shot, quipping that he was "drinking for two."

Teigen told Seacrest that the Grammys felt different this year since she's pregnant: "Much less [drinking]. I'm like, 'I'm not funny this year.'"

The couple has struggled to conceive in the past, and Teigen confirmed only recently to People that they opted for IVF again, as they had with baby Luna. "We did the harvesting — as they call it — again, where they make the embryos.” She had previously hinted that a little boy would be next after Luna, though a recent Instagram post of Teigen's captioned "girls weekend" had the internet speculating that maybe a second girl was on the way.

Now that the gender mystery is over, the only mystery left is the due date — that and why haters keep thinking they can go toe-to-toe with Teigen, the clapback queen of social media.

Grammys: 2008 Teigen

Grammys: 2008 Teigen

Earlier this month, Teigen posted a throwback pic on Instagram of Legend and herself at the 2008 Grammys. She poked fun at her own appearance: "10 years ago. This tan!!! Lmao." When some random troll commented that she looked better before "the boobies and the fillers," Teigen's retort was swift and harsh: "Boobies and fillers? Fuck off with your backhanded shit." Spoiler for future moms: Nothing fills those "boobies" quite like two pregnancies, folks.

And this concludes our latest chapter of Chrissy Teigen and why we heart her so hard. She's committed to keeping it real and putting up with precisely zero bullshit.

Even though she didn't take home an award, Pink clearly had the best time at the Grammys. She posted a bunch of photos to Instagram showing all the highlights of her night, and seriously, anyone would be jealous. She spent the night with her family and hung out a bunch with Rihanna. What could possibly be better than that?

The photos included some of Pink rocking that custom feather dress and belting out her single, "Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken" and one of her looking super-cute and snuggly with her kids and her mom before they all went to the Grammys.

12 New Movies We're Excited For This February

February boasts two big movie releases, but there are plenty more we're excited to see.

Buena Vista chose a February release for the hotly anticipated Black Panther, timed for Black History Month. The film is based on the comic book character created by Stan Lee in the 1960s. Black Panther is the alter ego of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), King of Wakanda, a technologically advanced fictional African nation. If you saw Captain America: Civil War in 2016, you already know Black Panther. He will also appear in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, set to release on May 4.

February is also the month we celebrate romantic love on Valentine’s Day, and that means the third installment of the Fifty Shades franchise. It seems wedding bells are set to ring for Anastasia and Christian, our favorite BSDM couple.

If you’re not into comic books or safe words, don’t worry. There are still some other great movies to catch at the cinema. Here are our top picks.

1. Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built (Feb. 2)

Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester gun empire, believes the souls of all the people killed by her family's guns are haunting her. To appease them, she builds room after room in her house with construction going 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The story is inspired by the real Sarah Winchester, whose home is near San Francisco, California.

2. Fifty Shades Freed (Feb. 9)

Anastasia Steel (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) are finally tying the knot — er, the proverbial knot, not a knot in the velvet rope from the red room.

3. Peter Rabbit (Feb. 9)

This animated film based on Beatrix Potter's classic children's books stars Peter Rabbit (James Cordon), Flopsie (Margot Robbie) and Cottontail (Daisy Ridley) as the lead cuddle-bunnies. Like all hungry rabbits, they're desperate to get into the neighbor's vegetable garden and eat whatever they can find. This is a fresh, hip take on the familiar story.

Lupita Nyong’o Opens Up About Embracing Her Skin Color

For Lupita Nyong’o, accepting her insecurities isn’t a onetime deal — it’s an ongoing process. The 34-year-old actor recently opened up about lingering insecurities concerning her appearance, including her skin color, and how a part of her “will always feel unattractive.”

Nyong’o landed on the topic of insecurities after dishing to The Hollywood Reporter about her upcoming children’s book, Sulwe. The book, which was born out of a speech Nyong’o gave about accepting herself and “seeing beauty in [her] complexion,” follows a young girl’s similar journey to embracing her skin color.

“Sulwe is a young Kenyan girl who, though her name means star [in Luo], her skin is the color of midnight,” Nyong’o said. “And she’s uncomfortable because she’s the darkest in her family and goes about trying to change that, then she has this adventure that leads her to accept herself.”

The conversation led Nyong’o to open up about remaining insecurities with her appearance. Though Nyong’o has progressed leaps and bounds in accepting herself for who she is, she is content with not seeing herself as perfect.

“There is a part of me that will always feel unattractive,” she said. “That’s OK, because it will keep me grounded. I don’t need to be so full of myself that I feel I am without flaw. I can feel beautiful and imperfect at the same time. I have a healthy relationship with my aesthetic insecurities.”

Blue Ivy Shushing Beyoncé & Jay-Z at the Grammys Is Everything

Blue Ivy is the boss of the world in training. She's starting with her parents, naturally, but she'll get to the rest of us eventually, so behave.

You know how it is when you're a kid: Your parents have had a few too many beers at the neighborhood BBQ, and you're all, "OMG, you guys. Can you stop being so embarrassing?"

Except in Blue Ivy's case, it's when your parents are Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and they're getting too rowdy and clapping too loud right in your damn ear at the 2018 Grammys when you're trying to concentrate and find Bruno Mars in the crowd because you need his autograph, like, yesterday.

It's not easy being Blue Ivy, but damn, she is fun to watch.

How much Bachelor is too much Bachelor? I think we've found the line and that's coming from someone who is a die-hard fan of nearly every Bachelor Nation franchise. Ashley Iaconetti, otherwise known as "Kardashley" for her striking resemblance to Kim Kardashian (especially when she ugly cried), is one of the greatest contestants in Bachelor history. But should she have her own show? Not necessarily.

More: I actually feel really bad for Bachelor in Paradise's Ashley Iaconetti

Listen: What made Iaconetti such an entertaining and memorable contestant was her tendency to break down and ugly cry all over the confessional booth à la Kim K losing a diamond earring in the ocean every time something went remotely wrong. Chris Soules didn't pick her for a one-on-one? Ugly cry. Wells Adams friendzoned her? Ugly cry. Jared Haibon also friendzoned her? You guessed it: Time to ugly cry.

Ashley Iaconetti sobbing on Bachelor In Paradise

Iaconetti is reportedly now set to host The Story of Us, a KineticContentTV show that will stream on their channel's Youtube page, where she'll interview successful couples about what it takes to find love.

"I've been on The Bachelor franchise three frickin' times trying to find 'The One,'" she explains in a promo for the show. "But at the age of 29, here I am, single as fuck. So instead of going on another reality show and trying to hunt down my husband, I'm going to hunt down success stories in this crazy times of Tinder, Bumble, Hinge. I'm going to sit down with seven couples and ask them all questions that I need answers to, like, 'How do you know when you've found the right one?' and 'Do soulmates even exist?' and what about monogamy? Is monogamy really that hard?' Because some people make it seem like it is, but I don't think so. But then again, what do I know?"

Kim Kardashian West Is Being Accused of Cultural Appropriation

0
0

Kim Kardashian West is no stranger to cultural appropriation, so it should come as no surprise that she’s under fire again. This time around, she's facing intense scrutiny for styling her hair in beaded braids and posting pictures of it on her Instagram and Snapchat.

More: Whoa, Kim Kardashian West Is Already Thinking About a 4th Kid?!

On Sunday, Jan. 28, she posted a video of herself flaunting thin, bleach-blond braids with white beads at the end. In the video, Kardashian West called them Bo Derek braids. Bo Derek is an actor who may be best remembered for being one of the first white people to culturally appropriate braids in popular media when she wore them in the 1979 film 10. Derek's hairstyle led many white women to wear the hairstyle, and now, that apparently includes Kardashian West.

“So, guys, I did Bo Derek braids, and I’m really into it,” Kardashian West said in the video.

Immediately, she was slammed and accused of cultural appropriation for wearing beaded braids, which she also wore on the set of a photo shoot. Many lashed out at Kardashian West for mislabeling the braids, which are actually Fulani braids. This protective hairstyle was created by the Fulani people, an ethnic group concentrated in West Africa and parts of East Africa — a fact Kardashian West seems to be unaware of or not able to readily acknowledge.

Critics were quick to call out Kardashian West for her cultural ignorance. Many lambasted her for crediting the hairstyle to a white actor, while others scolded her for her racial insensitivity.

There is no excuse, and we hope Kardashian West not only issues an apology, but also stops appropriating other cultures' beauty and fashion and tells her sisters to cut that shit out too.

Yes, People With Autism Have Sex

0

Sex can be awkward or challenging for anyone. But for people on the autism spectrum, navigating sexuality can be especially complicated.

According to research published in 2012 by the World Health Organization, children with intellectual disabilities have a 4.6 times higher risk of being sexually abused and assaulted than children who aren't disabled, and adults with mental health conditions are at 4 times more likely to be victims of violence compared to those without. This stunning level of victimization, especially sexual victimization, has roots not only in a culture defined by power imbalances between people with disabilities and those without, but also in a culture that sees people with disabilities as nonsexual.

More: Yes, People With Disabilities Have Sex & Deserve Sex Ed

The autism spectrum is marked by challenges with social interactions and information: for example, understanding nonverbal cues can be difficult.

“Most autistic people have suffered consequences from isolation to physical violence when we’ve got social interaction ‘wrong’ in the past. This makes an already stressful thing even more so because we are waiting for the anger or coldness that will come if or when we misstep. If the interaction is sexually charged, the tension level is likely to be higher still,” says Sez Thomasin, a writer and sex educator on the spectrum.

For Dina Buno, star of the award-winning independent documentary Dina, sexual empowerment as a woman on the spectrum became important in adolescence. “I was taken advantage of the first time when I was 16. It's not just about saying no: People manipulate you. We want to be friends with people. We want people to tell us they love us.”

The movie follows her during the months leading to her wedding with Scott Levin, who is also on the spectrum. The movie does not shy away from sexually charged moments as Buno attempts to communicate her needs to Levin via kisses, a gift of The Joy of Sex and straight-up discussion of her sexual desires. Ultimately, the movie presents the normal life of a couple on the spectrum, including their sexuality, which for most of us neurotypicals is not something we tend to consider.

More: Overcoming the Stigma Surrounding Disability & Sex

But sexual beings they are, and, as Thomasin explains, “A massive barrier is teachers, parents and carers and colleagues in sexual health not seeing learning-disabled and neurodiverse people as adult/sexual beings.” Consequences for this lack of consideration include difficulties with navigating boundaries and consent, accepting their queer orientations and identities and understanding basic principles of sexual health and well-being.

But let’s be clear: These difficulties do not happen because people with disabilities are incapable of understanding these concepts. It’s because if they receive sexual education at all, it is rarely inclusive. Learning to navigate boundaries can be especially challenging to people on the spectrum.

“If an autistic person has not been explicitly taught about consent and what might make someone uncomfortable, there is a risk that they might be unaware of unspoken boundaries," Thomasin says. "That’s why a culture of openness and being able to honestly communicate our desires and boundaries is especially great."

To Buno, lack of education in consent can also drive people on the spectrum into the cycle of abuse: “It's important to learn to say, ‘I don't like this. I don't like what you're doing to me’. People on the spectrum are being sexually assaulted, and they feel somebody tells them somewhere along the line that they're different, and they deserve what they're getting.”

As they feel the pressure to act “normally,” people on the spectrum are also badly served by heteronormative sexual education. Thomasin found their experience with typical sexual education frustrating. “The assumption was that we all definitely wanted heterosexual sex and if we used condoms we were doing it right," she says. "In that assumption, there was a coded message that not wanting sex or wanting queer sex were both aberrant. I obviously don’t know what it was like for neurotypical kids, but for me, those assumptions translated as instructions. ‘Have sex. With a man. Use condoms.’”

More: As a Person With a Disability, I Find Sex Empowering

Sexual education is already generally subpar for neurotypical youth without disabilities. Any inclusion of queer sexuality and diverse gender identities immediately gets flagged as “trying to recruit teenagers” in the so-called “gay (or trans) agenda”. If it’s difficult for people without disabilities to navigate things like consent and queer sex, believing that the impoverished version of sexual education that people with disabilities receive actually serves them is delusional.

To be truly empowering, sexual educators have to learn about the different needs of people with diverse abilities; but more fundamentally, they must acknowledge that people with disabilities and people on the spectrum have the same sexual rights as everyone else.

So, you’re waiting to pick up the kids from school while simultaneously answering yet another "ASAP" email from your boss and wondering what you’re going to cook for dinner. For a moment, you scroll across an Instagram photo of a jaw-dropping destination in Europe, Africa, South America, you name it, and you think to yourself, "If only I could pack up my family and see the world."

Well, why can’t you?

That’s the question these five parents asked themselves when the desire to explore the globe — with kids in tow — hit them hard. Instead of brushing off what seemed like a radical idea, they took it as a challenge: How could they make the lifestyle they dreamed about a reality, all while giving their kids the education and experiences they deserve?

Here, the best advice on taking that leap of faith and booking a one-way ticket to a nomadic lifestyle — from families who gave up everything to make it possible.

Expect the unexpected

Journalist Janis Couvreux and her husband Michel Couvreux, an architect, met in France. After being married for four years, they knew they wanted to start a family, but they struggled with the concept of giving up their traveling spirit. They also didn’t want their kids to grow up in suburbia; Janis says this type of community promotes the idea that "the world stops at your door." Instead, Janis and Michel wanted the globe to teach their kids what cul-de-sac living never could. So when they were given the opportunity to take their friend’s boat from the Bay of Biscay in France to San Sebastián, Spain, spending several days at sea, they had their epiphany.

“Both my husband and I turned to each other on the deck of the boat at our arrival and said, ‘This is how we will do it.’ Traveling on a sailboat seemed to be an ideal method while raising kids and spending vital time with them in their early years. We had a vision and began planning for our ultimate goal of sailing around the world,” Janis said.

When their first son, Sean, turned 1, they stepped away from their careers to set sail — literally. Sean grew up on the sailboat (until age 11), while younger brother Brendan spent his first eight years at sea. While eventually, the Couvreux kids went to school in San Francisco (the boys are now in their mid-30s) the experience was one they’d recommend to any family who can make it happen. Janis' advice? Traveling —and parenting — means expecting the unexpected. Just be prepared for how the experience might impact your kids.

“This lifestyle will influence them, but maybe not how you would wish or like. Some will accept it; others reject it," she explains. "Both our sons are adventurous [and] adrenaline-driven, and live in the outdoors; one is an America's Cup professional sailor, the other a fanatical rock climber and paramedic/firefighter with a Denver fire department. They don't have nine-to-five jobs, and one never went to college, but they are both hugely successful."

Just do it — & let it go

Three years ago, Cindy Bailey Giauque and her husband, Pierre Giauque, looked at their comfortable life in Silicon Valley, California, and felt like it wasn’t their own. Though they had everything they needed, including a four-bedroom home and stable careers, they felt trapped by the routine and obligations of their daily lives — work, school, raising children, community commitments... the list goes on. Not only were they feeling unfulfilled and uninspired, but after struggling to conceive their kids — Julien and Lily — they wanted to spend more time with them than they were, especially while they were young. So they started saving and budgeting for two years of travel. They began on the islands of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean and are currently preparing for their next adventures in Africa and Australia.

The experience of jet-setting with their 9-year-old and 6-year-old has not only brought the couple closer; it's made the whole family happier by teaching them about what they really need: each other, not a big house and a lot of stuff.

“Americans especially are really attached to their stuff," Cindy has realized, "but you'll find when you travel, you won't need any of it beyond the basics you take with you. It was hard for us to give up almost all our possessions, but while traveling, we found we didn't miss a thing. Even the kids: They played with chopsticks and empty boxes. And you'll need to travel light anyway."

You can still have "normal" days around the world

After living in central Japan for almost a decade while running a Montessori school, Karen M. Ricks and her husband, Dave Varnes, felt they had accomplished all they could in their work and community. So when Ricks was offered one of only a dozen spots at a renowned cooking school in Italy, they decided to take it as a sign to begin their trip around the world. Their most important carry-on? Their 7-year-old son, Christopher. And what a ride it’s been: The family began with three months in Sicily before traveling through London and then six months in Mexico. There, they practiced the Spanish language while trying their skills at cooking traditional local dishes. After traveling through the United States to visit family members they hadn’t seen in 10 years, they headed back to Japan for a culinary tour. With every month, both Ricks and Varnes focused on their passions, writing blogs, a cookbook and romance novels.

And while it’s all been a whirlwind, Ricks says what’s comforting — and surprising — about traveling full-time is how much you can feel at home wherever you might be.

“As exciting as it sounds to jet around the globe, we really are just a ‘normal’ family that still has ‘normal’ days," Ricks says. "While we have incredible tales to tell about some of the amazing places we've been, we also still enjoy quiet days at ‘home,’ wherever in the world that may be. We still go for walks around our neighborhood, play in the local park and have conversations around the family dinner table before taking a bath, reading a story and bedtime. The most magical parts of our adventures have been when we slow down to appreciate all the little nuances of the experiences we are sharing.”

Remember: It’s never going to be the perfect time

After meeting in the Middle East where they were both working, Hawaiian-born Wendy Awai-Dakroub and her husband, Lebanon-bred Youssef, began building their lives in Dubai. But once they wanted to start their family, they made the choice to move to Awai-Dakroub’s native island. Six years and two children (Leah and Jaffer) later, the family found themselves trapped in what Awai-Dakroub calls "the rat race."

“We worked more than we needed to. The kids had after-school programs they didn’t really enjoy. Getting stuck in traffic daily was no fun, and chores consumed our lives. What’s worse is that we lived in Hawaii, aka paradise, and yet didn’t have time to enjoy the beauty of our island,” she explained. So in 2014, they changed everything: They listed their house for rent, sold their belongings, took their kids out of private school and booked a one-way ticket to Europe with the intention of "world-schooling" their children as they traveled.

For two years, the family slow-traveled through Europe, where Awai-Dakroub developed a world-schooling program for her children — and they experienced some of the most beautiful sites in the world along the way. They only decided to stop trekking full-time when their daughter approached her teenage years. Today, the family spends six months in Oahu and six months nomadically. Awai-Dakroub’s best advice to families who want to try their hand at globetrotting is do it — and do it now. “There’s no ‘right’ age to start traveling with them. But from our experience, traveling has opened up Leah and Jaffer to new experiences and taught them empathy, something we find difficult to learn in a traditional classroom setting,” Awai-Dakroub explains.

It’ll teach your children about gratitude

Rebecca and Nicholas Bennett used to live and work in the United Kingdom, where they ran country craft courses and landscape garden-design classes — and offered a luxury vacation accommodation from their sprawling 16th-century farm in the South of England. But when they learned the farmer next door to them was going to sell his land for a housing development, they knew the shift would dramatically change their business and lifestyle. So they went back to the drawing board — over drinks, of course. Instead of looking at the situation's negatives, they found the silver lining: an opportunity see the world. They sold their home and business. And instead of booking multiple flights and finding accommodations, the Bennetts bought a sailboat, finding comfort in having their home always with them.

The couple spent two-and-a-half years on their boat with their daughter, Amelie. They traveled 10,000 miles, including a full cross over the Atlantic, after which they eventually sold the boat in the Bahamas. They then flew to have their second child, Rufus, in Panama.

It was the experience of close-quarters living that inspired the Bennetts to start their new business, The Solid Bar Company. “While sailing, we saw dolphins, sharks and flying fish, but also quite a bit of plastic, which was sad. All our big bottles of shampoo and other toiletries would fly about the boat in rough passages, so we realized there really was a need for personal care products that travel well but could remain luxurious and preferably plastic-free. So we set about creating The Solid Bar Co. products that are waterless, solid and eco-friendly,” Rebecca explained.

After receiving their business visa and spending time in the U.S. Virgin Islands perfecting their products, the Bennetts finally decided to move to Florida. But overall, Rebecca says that being on a boat with kids for an extended period of time taught their family about gratitude more than any other experience could. “It taught us all an immense amount about ourselves and each other in a positive way, made us value things like water and space. I’m glad we traveled when our daughter was still very young and not too set in her ways. She has seen different cultures, poverty, experienced school in different languages and countries, and I can see the maturity and confidence she has gained from it,” Rebecca adds.

Let your children open doors

Originally from South Africa, Sue Campbell-Ross and Rod Campbell-Ross moved to the United Kingdom to work and travel thanks to a job opportunity. They lived for more than a decade in various places in England, including London and Birmingham, before they settled in West Yorkshire and welcomed their clan of three children: Pip, Harry and Emily. But Rod’s hectic career schedule kept him commuting for hours each day, leaving little time — or energy — to spend with his family. Sue and Rod decided to make a change — to prioritize family, love and life. Rod had fallen in love with Australia after a work trip there, and he dreamed of moving his kids to this continent, so they were off.

The family opted against flying and took the long way ‘round: by boat. Or rather, by yacht.

After selling their home and most of their belongings, the Campbell-Ross clan purchased their floating home and Rod took a redundancy from his job. For Sue, it was quite the adventure considering she had never set foot on a yacht in her life, but Rod reassured her that not only would she learn, but it would be an adventure she’d always remember. He was right.

“At almost the exact time that Rod proposed this adventure, I was attending a life-coaching workshop and was given that quote, ‘Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor; catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.’ It hit me like a bang to the head when I read it. And you know, I did exactly all of that,” says Sue.

With the intention of giving their children stories they could tell for the rest of their lives — and the hope of savoring every last second as a family — the clan began the two-year trek to the land down under. Sue explains there was nothing quite as powerful as witnessing the world not only through her eyes, but through those of her children too. She describes the experience as "multiplying joy a hundredfold."

She also says kids have a way of opening doors while traveling that adults never could, and when you let them be, their wanderlust is free to roam. “So many local families would reach out to us because of the children and invite us in. Our children would meet other sailing children, and we would then get to know the parents,” she shared. “They were shown love and kindness by strangers everywhere. It was an amazing experience for the children… they had such freedom to be.”

Carrie Underwood Crying Over Her Speeding Ticket Is All of Us

I don't know about you, but I've only ever been pulled over by the cops twice in my life. Both times it was for dumb things that I still had to pay a ticket for. Both times I might have apologized so profusely that I sounded like a broken record and things got weird. I may or may not have cried (I plead the 5th on that count). So, considering my history with the law, I found Carrie Underwood's recent run-in with the cops extremely relatable. Like, painfully so.

On Monday afternoon, Underwood tweeted out to her Twitter followers that it had finally happened: after close to two decades spent as a licensed driver, the fuzz finally got her.

"Well, it happened today. After 18 years, I can no longer say I’ve never been pulled over for speeding. I feel so ashamed! I may or may not have cried in my car after the cop let me go," Underwood wrote, following it up with some pretty silly hashtags: "#RuleFollower," "#GrannyDriver" and "#ImSorry."

Does anyone else just wanna hug Underwood though? Like, I totally feel her pain when it comes to possibly getting all flustered and upset when the cops pull you over. Don't worry, sis, I'm right there with you!

The resulting facial injury required stitches, as Underwood revealed in early January 2018 on her Twitter.

Nicole Kidman Enjoys a Healthy & Hearty Dose of Bugs

These days, it's hardly considered going out on a limb to say that Nicole Kidman is an amazing actor. The roles she chooses, the performances she gives, the seeming ease with which she seems to do all of it and then the awards she scoops up in the wake of it all seem to have confirmed that she is an actor not to be taken lightly. So, as a result, chances are good that when it comes to revealing a new side of her self that we haven't seen before, we'll likely be left in awe of her skills.

The kind of awe you're about to feel about Kidman's newly-revealed hidden talent, courtesy of the folks at Vanity Fair, might not be the kind of awe you're used to. Prepare yourself because you may never look at Nicole Kidman the same way again.

As part of Vanity Fair's ongoing digital short series "Secret Talent Theatre," Kidman decided to sit down and reveal her own secret talent that absolutely none of us could have guessed at even if we had had a million and one chance to guess. That talent? Eating bugs.

Yeah, dude. Kidman loves her some bug grub. Why she loves bugs is still a mystery to me but watching her happily munch away of a 4-course meal of bugs makes me feel things that I'm not really comfortable with feeling.

Oh, and what do these bugs taste like? Well, I'm glad you asked because Kidman happily reveals to the camera (a.k.a. us, watching in horror) what the flavor profile of different courses is.

The first course is hornworms, which look like blue pasta except way more alive and wriggly. "Mm, extraordinary," she initially reacts. Then she comments on the texture and flavor. "Very moist. Chewy. Can't quite describe the flavor but I need a little water," she says with a laugh.

And yet she perseveres! Why, oh why, Nicole Kidman?

Mealworms seem to go down smoothly and cause Kidman to remark that she'd win Survivor — a claim I cannot doubt at this point. Give her the award preemptively because this needless bug eating is proof of her mettle.

Perhaps the most vivid description about the bugs she's ate was made in regards to the crickets she was served for her third course. When ostensibly asked by a producer just off camera what they tasted like, Kidman replied, "Like nothing you've ever tasted. Like...a hairy nut." The double entendre seems to hit her a moment later and, through the purest of chuckles, she clarifies: "Oh my gosh. A nut from the shell."

No, It's Not Your Imagination — Your Period Does Affect Your Skin

0
0

As much as we may try to ignore them and get on with our lives, periods do affect many aspects of our health — and skin is no exception. So, what happens to our skin during our menstrual cycle, and is there anything we can do about it?

What happens

According to Dr. Melissa Piliang, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, all parts of your menstrual cycle do, in fact, affect your skin.

“During your period, hormone levels are low,” Piliang tells SheKnows. “Your skin will be dryer, more sensitive and more prone to inflammation.”

More: How to Navigate Yoga While You Have Your Period

Giving your skin a little TLC (not the channel) is the key to getting your skin through your period, she explains.

A good place to start is applying a gentle fragrance-free moisturizer twice daily, avoiding harsh soaps and very hot water, Piliang says, adding that a soothing yogurt mask may help decrease inflammation and soothe sensitive skin.

Then, after your period is over and you move toward mid-cycle (when you’re ovulating), your estrogen levels begin to rise.

“Estrogen means your skin cells are plumper,” Piliang explains. “Your skin will appear fuller and is more resilient. This is a good time for a light exfoliation and to start back on gentle exfoliating products like alpha hydroxy acids.”

After you finish ovulating, your estrogen level drops and your progesterone level rises. Testosterone levels also peak around the time of ovulation.

“This predominance of androgen hormones (progesterone and testosterone) leads to increased sebum production and oilier skin,” Piliang says.

On top of that, the skin cells lining the hair follicles become stickier and form plugs, which can make pores appear larger, she adds. If the plug is large, there’s a good chance blemishes like blackheads and whiteheads will develop.

More: What It's Like to Get Your Period in a Wheelchair

“These hormonal changes become more imbalanced towards androgens until your period,” Piliang says. “Then is all starts over again.”

Treatment options

Because each part of your menstrual cycle affects your skin in different ways, it’s helpful to take that into consideration when deciding how to treat and care for your skin.

For example, during the first week after your period, when your skin is dryer and more sensitive, Piliang says it is important to treat your skin gently. And while, yes, this does apply to your face — she suggests using extra moisturizers — Piliang also recommends skipping painful procedures like facials with extractions and bikini or facial waxing.

Then, when your androgen (testosterone and progesterone) levels begin to rise in the second half of your cycle and your skin becomes oilier, topical products to loosen the plug and dry up the oil — such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide and adapalene — can be helpful, she adds. Not only that, but benzoyl peroxide helps to dry up oil and open pores and is antibacterial.

Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid all help to exfoliate the skin, keep pores free of debris and dry up oil. And retinoids (like tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene) are vitamin A derivatives, which decrease oil production and keep the pores open.

“All of these can be irritating, so you want to be cautious with using them during your period and in the first few days after,” Piliang says. “They also make you more sensitive to the sun — so wear your sunscreen!”

If you try these methods and hormonal acne does not improve, Piliang then suggests that you make an appointment with a dermatologist.

Ikea Is Testing Out Furniture Rentals & Buybacks

Gone are the days when one merely rents an apartment. In the near future, you'll be able to rent your furniture too — particularly from Ikea.

Ikea has started testing out furniture rentals and furniture buyback programs in an effort to be more eco-friendly. Rentals allows consumers who are worried about the environmental impact of disposing of furniture to be more environmentally friendly, allowing the furniture giant to recycle and reuse materials.

"We are testing radical solutions," chief executive of Ikea Jesper Brodin said at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "There are very different levels of interest depending which city you are in. So in London, for example, there are a lot of people who commute and they are not interested with passion in building a second home, so rental there is more interesting."

Ikea has experimented with buying back sofas in Japan, another area where people may be less inclined to purchase a home.

"You build in an economic incentive. You build in a consciousness with consumers that they don't have to own it, but own this collectively in the world and recycle it," Brodin said.

To take things a step further, carpets could be rented too. Dutch science group DSM has created a polyester carpet that can be recycled indefinitely.

"Why should you own a carpet? Maybe you could just rent it," chief executive of DSM Feike Sijbesma also said at the event. "If the manufacturer can use your carpet as an input, then you could rent the carpet. You don't need to buy any carpet again for the rest of your life, just rent it."

This isn't the first time Ikea has been influenced by both their customers' way of living and their shopping habits. From implementing the store credit card to creating new and innovative products such as the side table with a handle for people constantly on the move, it's clear Ikea wants to make our collective lives easier.

Producers on the show confirmed the shutdown in a statement released Monday, explaining, "Hiatus on the production of The Rhythm Section has been extended due to the hand injury Blake Lively sustained while filming an action sequence on the action thriller at the end of last year."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lively has already had one surgery on her hand, but it did not go as planned, and now she must have a second surgery, which a source reports could delay the film's schedule by as much as five months.

In a Hollywood Reporter interview with director Reed Morano at the beginning of January, Morano said Lively must be healed enough to perform stunts in the film.

"[Lively's] okay. She's just recovering," Morano said. "The problem is that normally, that kind of an injury, you would have four to six weeks of rehab and then you would wear a splint. We have to go into stunts, so it's very complicated."

The Rhythm Section is an adaptation of the first of Mark Burnell's Stephanie Patrick novels. It is a spy thriller that tells the story of a woman who is searching for answers about a plane crash that killed her family — a flight that she was meant to be on. Jude Law is also set to star alongside Lively in the film.
