Did This Stranger Things Couple Just Drop Big News About Season 3?

Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton (aka Jonathan) just shared a sweet shout-out to co-star Natalia Dyer (aka Nancy) for her 21st birthday, and there are two things we can ascertain from his post. No. 1, this TV-turned-real-life couple couldn't be any cuter if they tried. And, no. 2, Heaton possibly just clued Stranger Things fans into some big news.

Heaton showed the loved — and perhaps spilled some beans — on Instagram, where he posted a predictably adorable picture of Dyer bundled up and holding a piece of birthday cake. "Happy 21st birthday! @nattyiceofficial I hope it's a great one and I'm stoked to be working on this new series with you," Heaton wrote. "I think it's gonna be great. P.S. - Not feeling too well but I still want to meet you at Piedmont Park tonight."

Stranger Things shout-out

So, they're precious, right? We'll start with that. Then we need to talk about the major hint Heaton dropped. As one fan questioned in the comment section, "Wait is this series 3 of Stranger Things that there [sic] working on?"

More: The Real-Life Love Triangle That Happened Behind the Scenes of Stranger Things

It seems like a logical assumption. Admittedly, the phrasing could cause some confusion, as "series" in the U.S. typically refers to the show as a whole and "season" to the individual years of filming. However, Heaton is from the UK, where "series" and "season" may be used interchangeably.

Although, if we're really being honest, it would be pretty fantastic if the "new series" Heaton referred to in his birthday post was actually a new show altogether. Who wouldn't be down to watch these two talented actors on screen together more?

That seems less likely, though, than Heaton's "new series" actually referring to Season 3 of Stranger Things.

David Harbour (aka Chief Hopper) already broke the news that fans would likely have to wait awhile for the next installment, saying, "Like, you probably won't get [Season 3] until sometime in 2019. But also part of the thing is, like any good thing, they need time. And those guys work so hard. I mean, they just sit in their apartment and write for 12, 14 hours a day." But Heaton could simply be referring to the fact that they will be shooting a third season soon.

And hey, if he happens to have revealed that production on the third season started early, well, that would make us like this cute Stranger Things couple even more.

A UK Politician Is in Hot Water Over Racist Remarks About Meghan Markle

British politician Henry Bolton is in the midst of major fallout following racist remarks reportedly made by his girlfriend, Jo Marney, about Meghan Markle.

More: A Definitive Guide to Meghan Markle & Prince Harry's Relationship in 2017

According to the Daily Mail's Sunday edition, the publication obtained a string of shocking text messages sent by Marney about Markle. The comments allegedly occurred three weeks prior to Marney starting a relationship with Bolton, and the exchange happened between Marney and an unnamed male friend.

In the offensive remarks, Marney stated that Prince Harry's "black American" fiancee would "taint" the Royal Family with "her seed" and usher in a "black king." She referred to Markle as "a scrubber" (derogatory slang), a "gender equality twat," "a dumb little 'actress' that no one has heard of" and a "dumb little commoner" with a "tiny brain."

Marney's unconscionable remarks also reportedly include her saying she would never have sex with "a negro" because she thinks they are "ugly."

When the person she was messaging pushed back by calling her racist, Marney essentially scoffed, responding, "lol so what? Not wanting other races and cultures to invade your own culture doesn't mean I hate their race. Just means I don't want their cultures invading mine."

Upon being made aware of the hateful messages, Ukip leaders immediately suspended Marney.

Bolton is already embroiled in scandal for leaving his wife and mother of his two children, Tatiana Smurova, for the much younger Marney. The head of the United Kingdom Independent Party, or Ukip, Bolton is scheduled to attend a meeting next Sunday to discuss his fate.

In a statement to The Mail, Marney reportedly issued an apology for her remarks, claiming, "No offense was intended and, again, I apologize unreservedly for any such offense or hurt that my messages have caused to members of the public, members of Ukup, my friends, family and loved ones."

George Clooney Is Taking a Crack at Prestige TV With a New Show

Well, folks, it looks like George Clooney might not be retiring from acting after all (that didn't take long).

The actor, director and producer will be wearing multiple hats on his next project and we're looking forward to his return in a different (for Clooney) kind of project. As reported by E! News, Clooney will be taking on one of the lead roles in a rather prestigious adaptation of Joseph Heller's classic 20th-century novel, Catch-22, for Hulu. So, you can heave a sigh of relief because not only is Clooney not officially retiring from acting, but he's also tackling a prestige TV adaptation that will feel very timely.

More: Why You May Not See George Clooney in Any Movies for a While

Hulu has been rapidly expanding into the prestige TV arena, with The Handmaid's Tale being its most notable title to date. With awards aplenty, it's clear that Hulu does well when it takes on an infamous novel and brings it to TV-watching audiences everywhere. As such, we can surely get excited about Catch-22, which will likely bring the same kind of thematic and plot-driven chills and thrills to our screens.

For those who might be a little rusty on the plot of Catch-22 from their high school days, the story focuses on "Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force bombardier trying to fulfill his service requirements so he can go home. The novel explored the paradox of requirements where airmen who felt mentally unfit to fly were not obligated to do so, but anyone who applied to stop flying was sane enough to fly." The story, set in Italy during World War II, will promise more than a few shots of handsome George in a sharp period-appropriate costume as he's set to play Col. Catcart.

And now for the sad news: There will, unequivocally, be only one season. Not only does the fact that Clooney will act and direct in the series preclude the possibility that he — a working father and husband with multiple other projects — will sign on for a second season, but this story is a close-ended one. At this moment, it sounds like even the clamor of potential audience approval wouldn't get a second season greenlit, as was the case with the initially close-ended Big Little Lies.

But even if we only get one season comprised of six episodes, as reports indicate, there's no doubt Clooney will deliver at every level. Start clearing room in your queue right now, guys. You'll need it for Catch-22.

If You're Trying to Be Healthy, Should You Eat Alone or With Others?

$

We all need to eat, and many of us look forward to it. It’s a great way to bring family and friends together. It can make you feel nostalgic and provide comfort.

And we know eating and living a healthy lifestyle go hand in hand — no one likes to be hungry, and it's extremely difficult to pass up some of our favorite unhealthy foods if we see others eating them while we’re out in a restaurant.

On the other hand, you may have a favorite place that serves up healthy soups or salads you know you won't eat at home because you’ll grab a box of crackers and a tub of cheese for dinner instead or you have a partner who really likes a heavy meal every evening.

More: What to Do if You've Overeaten

So, which is better for us if we are trying to eat healthy? To eat alone or with people, out or in?

Amy Goodson, a registered dietitian and nutrition consultant, tells SheKnows that both situations have pros and cons.

"When eating solo, it is much easier to overeat, as no one is there to stop you, especially if you are prone to emotional eating," she says.

I've been guilty of this, especially when it comes to sweets. I find if no one is around, I will eat more cookies or cut myself a bigger piece of cake. And I eat a lot faster than I would if someone were eating with me.

However, Goodson says eating solo can also be very good for our well-being, as it can "allow for mindful eating and awareness." It makes it easy to get lost in the moment, clear your head and take time for yourself. It can also force you to think through your choices instead of getting wrapped up in the “fun” of eating with others and eating more than planned.

MoreThese Are the Early Signs of Digestive Problems in Women

Goodson says another reason eating alone can be a mental boost is it allows "for a mental break from work or family.” However, on the reverse side, it can lead to feeling isolated and lonely and cause you to eat more as you are feeding your emotions instead of your body.

The people you eat with play a huge role in how and what you eat. Some of us surround ourselves with people who eat or serve more than we do, and so we follow suit. And it can go both ways. "Many people do what the people around them do,” Goodson says, and eating is no different, so if you are trying to make healthier choices and go to a party where there are no healthy choices, it is going to make it harder for you to stick to your goals than it would be if you were dining with very health-conscious people. You can curb this temptation by eating a healthy meal or snack before you meet up with them or offer to bring a healthy dish — no one wants to avoid gathering after gathering because they are afraid they won't stay on track.

Goodson says people generally eat healthier when they are at home because they have more control over what goes in their foods and aren't tempted by great-smelling fried foods or rich dishes upon entering their home like they are a restaurant. Portion sizes tend to be larger while dining out, and often, there are platters of bread or chips being put in front of you before your meal arrives.

MoreYour Field Guide to the Weird Sounds Your Body Makes

In her work as a registered dietitian, Goodson has seen those who eat at home with other people make the best choices. "This allows for people to choose healthy choices and how much they put on their plates while talking and enjoying time with others," she says, but adds that support is key to making good choices.

There are many factors that go into eating healthy, whether you are alone or with company, eating out or in. But if you are able to check in with yourself and know what works better for you to achieve the lifestyle you want, you are able to take control and are in a position to make better choices.

Katie Couric Opens Up About 'Crushing' Aftermath of Matt Lauer Firing

Katie Couric is having the same struggle so many of us are right now: reconciling the fact that men we know and love can be capable of horribly mistreating women. Since Matt Lauer was fired from the Today show in late November, Couric has been speaking out about her disbelief and her reckoning with how deep the entertainment industry's culture of mistreatment really goes.

More: Katie Couric Reveals Her Feelings on the Matt Lauer Sexual Misconduct Allegations

"It’s been really crushing," Couric told Entertainment Tonight over the weekend. "I think there’s been a lot of cognitive dissonance for me and a lot of people on the show, and clearly the behavior was unacceptable and shocking for so many of us, and yet we also all knew a side of Matt and many positive attributes. So to try to kind of make sense of it has been... almost impossible and very challenging."

Couric chose not to comment on whether she has been in contact with Lauer since he was fired, but the fact still remained that the two were close friends for years. Still, she praised Savannah Guthrie, who took Lauer's job, and her co-host, Hoda Kotb, for making the transition as seamless as possible under the difficult circumstances.

"I think Savannah and Hoda and the whole Today show staff took a very upsetting and incredibly troubling situation and were able to handle it with a lot of dignity and grace, and I really applaud them all," Couric said. "It’s been a very trying situation in all corners of the world, and all kinds of industries, and you know, people have to move forward."

Leah Remini Defends Ex-Scientologist Accused of Multiple Rapes

$

In the age of the #MeToo movement, we are learning that so many men — even men we know and love, who have been kind and done good things for the world — are capable of hurting women. A tenet to the movement is that we have to be able to recognize that even men who we know to be good and kind and loving can do terrible things.

More: Here's How Rose McGowan Is Taking a Page Out of Leah Remini's Playbook

Leah Remini is speaking out to defend ex-Scientologist Paul Haggis, who has been accused by multiple women of rape, and that's problematic.

In a lengthy open letter, Remini says Haggis, who once served as a spokesperson for the church, "deserves, based on his record as a gentleman and humanitarian, to be judged when all the evidence has been taken under penalty of perjury in a court of law."

And while Remini is correct that our legal system operates on the basis of assuming innocence until one is proven guilty, it is so important in this age where women are finding their voices and being heard that we believe them when they speak up. Haggis may not have been found guilty in a court of law, but a staggeringly low number of rapists and sexual assaulters is ever prosecuted, and that's one of the many parts of rape culture that needs to change. Meanwhile, it's extremely rare for women to lie about being raped. The four women who have levied accusations against Haggis, including two publicists who say he raped them, deserve to have their voices heard.

More: Milo Ventimiglia & Jennifer Lopez Are Going to Be On-Screen Lovers

"Paul Haggis is a good man who has been a friend to us and so many others. He has championed the rights of women, the LGBT community and has fought for and devoted himself to the underprivileged in the world. These are not 'PR stunts' — he has devoted his time, skill and money to worthy causes without fanfare for decades," Remini's letter reads. All of those things may very well be true. Haggis may have done great things. But unfortunately, as we have learned over and over in recent months, that does not preclude him from the ability to assault women. It's the same kind of statement that earned backlash for Lena Dunham, and Remini deserves the same scrutiny.

Remini claims to stand up for those who are silenced and abused by the Church of Scientology. Now, for her to silence women who claim to have been abused by this man goes against everything she purportedly stands for.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Are Getting the Lifetime Movie Treatment

Well, it looks like Prince William and Prince Harry have yet another thing in common: both of their love stories with their respective partners have been deemed worthy of a Lifetime movie. It was announced over the second weekend of January that Lifetime would be turning Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's love story into a movie for the network, which means that we not only have a royal wedding to look forward to, but we also have a royal movie to look forward to as well. Be still my beating heart, y'all!

More: Barack Obama Teasing Prince Harry Before an Interview Is Everything

According to Deadline, who first broke the news, the film is currently titled Harry & Meghan: The Royal Love Story. The love story in question is set to begin with their first date — a blind date set up by a mutual friend — and follow the pair through their year and a half long-distance courtship and eventual engagement. Additionally, Deadline notes that "[t]he film will examine the history of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the moment they met after being set up by friends, through their initial courtship when they were able to keep their romance under wraps, and ultimately the intense global media attention surrounding their relationship and Meghan’s life as a divorced American actress."

More: Prince Harry Interviewed His Dear Old Daddy, & It's Too Cute

While the film was only mentioned briefly during Lifetime's panel discussion at the 2018 TCAs, this is certainly a lot of tantalizing information to disclose right off the bat. There is no release date set for the film but in all likelihood, this movie could come out later in 2018 at the earliest. It should also be noted that the film is currently casting and it must have just recently begun at that because there is no word on anyone currently reading for the lead roles or in talks to finalize their casting. It will definitely be curious to see how Lifetime handles the casting on this one: will the choose more prestige actors to reel into their next royal project? Or will they cast relative unknowns?

More: Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Wedding Will Have Some American Touches

It will also be interesting to see what kind of tone the film strikes. Will it lean into the cheesy melodrama of Harry and Markle's story? Or will there be efforts made to turn it into a solid drama? No shade, but let's hope it doesn't turn out the way Prince William's Lifetime movie turned out — that's all I'm saying.

My Best Friends Are Having a Baby Together — Where Does That Leave Me?

$

I have the unique fortune of having a great friend who shares my love of nerdy movies, bad second-tier reality television and baking. I was even more fortunate when she went and got married to a guy who shared my love of soccer, sneakers and cologne. For years now, we've been a motley trio, but that's about to change, because we're having a baby.

No, we're not in a love triad worthy of a TLC special; we're just super-best friends. I'm 34, but none of my other friends have had babies yet, so this is new territory for everyone involved. And to add shock to the awe, my very closest friends are the ones who are expecting that very first baby.

I'm not tagging along to my bestie's prenatal yoga sessions and birthing classes or anything, but constantly hearing about ultrasounds, comparing the baby to different sizes of produce and stopping by Baby Gap on our regular shopping trips does have me considering my place as soon as the baby arrives. Where does the best friend fit into the equation when there's a best baby all of a sudden?

More: Here’s How These Women Knew They Were Ready to Get Pregnant

Late-night ghost hunts are probably out of the question. That trip to Bigfoot country will probably have to be postponed for a few years. (Yes, these are things we've actually discussed. What?) What we haven't actually talked about is what exactly will happen to our trio when the baby gets here. Will we still head to soccer games on Saturday nights? What'll happen when we all go to Disneyland? Will those Great British Baking Show binges be accompanied by crying and breastfeeding?

When I ask actual current parents, I tend to get too much advice. Some say they became shut-ins after the birth of their kids; they didn't want to be apart from their babies for even a minute. They barely made it to the supermarket, much less the black mailbox out by Area 51. Other parents, however, say kids didn't change things at all for them; they simply strapped their babies to their bodies and went about their lives. These parents' post-baby schedules remained mostly unchanged minus the new accessory.

Seeing my best friends take a huge step into adulthood also gives me the always-pleasant experience of examining where I am in comparison. For one thing, I'm not having a baby. It was the same feeling when my friends got married; I was reminded I wasn't. And now, as then, it can feel like I'm not reaching the same milestones everyone around me is — getting left behind while everyone else is checking things off of their life to-do lists. Marriage: check. Kids: check-to-be. My own list lacks these checkmarks. But at least I have a 401(k).

Of course, the best advice on this subject ended up coming from my own mom. I should have expected as much; she's known my best buds for just about as long as I have, so her sage advice wasn't completely without context.

"Wait," she said, warning me against my own impending freak-out. "Babies change everything, but they don't change everything all at once."

If there's a mom-wisdom class somewhere in my friend's schedule, I need to be her plus-one, that's for sure. It seems like mom wisdom is something we all need in these trying times. (Thanks, Mom.)

More:  Secondary Infertility: 6 Facts You Need to Know

Honestly, I've never seen myself having kids of my own... ever. My parents think being exposed to the experience of baby-raising — albeit separated by one degree — as I watch my friends' kids grow will change that mentality. But I'm not so sure. So, we'll wait and see.

Dad- hood aside, even my potential position as fun uncle is still up in the air since I don't know how fun I'll actually be just yet. What I do know is that my besties and I have put our soccer season tickets on hold for now — although we planned to go to at least one game this year. As for Disneyland, strollers are pretty great for holding jackets and snacks, I hear. And about the potential of crying interrupting hours-long FIFA sessions — I think I can handle it.

If my mom is right — and she's always right — the gradual changes will give me plenty of time to figure out where I fit in the complex equation of friends plus babies plus me. I'm not saying you'll find me with a baby (my own or otherwise) strapped to me anytime soon, but if my friends want to take their kiddo along to soccer games, that means the home team will have one more voice in the crowd. And I won't argue with that.

Are There Really Health Benefits to Sleeping on White Sheets?

$

Whether you’re traveling to a new country for fun and adventure or catching a cross-country flight for a business meeting, there’s something luxurious about waking up with the crisp, white, pressed sheets of a hotel when you’re away from the familiarity of your own bed. Do you ever wonder why the many resorts of the world select white sheets — that can be easily stained — over colors? If so, the answer might surprise you.

In addition to being easy to throw in the wash with similarly tinted towels and pillowcases, the internet has started the rumor that white sheets are better for your skin and your sleep quality. While some experts might think this theory is quite the stretch, others see some benefits to recreating that same white turndown service in your home.

More: What Are the Benefits — or Risks — of Drinking Lemon Water?

Do white sheets help you sleep better?

If you’re seeking an easier night’s rest that doesn’t require melatonin, counting sheep or putting your trusty iPhone down an hour before your self-imposed bedtime, can white sheets really work their sandman magic?

Not on their own according to sleep expert and dentist Dr. Sabrina Magid-Katz. While no research has proven quality or duration of sleep has been improved thanks to the shade of covers, Magid-Katz explains that there could be a placebo effect tied to happy memories at hotels or to a feeling of cleanliness since having white sheets likely will entice you to clean or bleach them more often.

“Anything that allows you to associate your bedroom with relaxation can help your sleep routine," she tells SheKnows. "If white sheets remind you of your favorite hotel — since most hotels have white sheets — and encourage you to relax, then by all means, go for it.”

More: 4 Totally Realistic Ways to Improve Your Health Starting Today

Just make sure not to use this tactic to diagnose insomnia or any other serious sleep issues, she adds: “If sheets don’t take care of your sleep problems, seek professional treatment for any sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.”

Can white sheets improve your skin?

Another school of thought subscribes to the notion that white sheets are a healthier pick for your skin, fighting against acne and clogged pores. According to dermatologists, who often know our skin better than we know it ourselves, white sheets won’t simply improve your skin by virtue of sleeping on them, but they might entice healthier habits to benefit the texture and condition of your face.

Board-certified dermatologist and president of Livad Skin Care Dr. Janet Prystowsky says sheets that show stains encourage a better washing routine. This act alone can strip away the oil you bring to your bed nightly and in return keep it from seeping into your skin while you’re dreaming.

“A pure white sheet reflects on your cleanliness in bed," she explains. "It will keep you honest about your habits, whether you wear makeup to bed, eat in bed, wear outdoor clothing in bed or forget to wash your sheets. Buying a set of white sheets may be the push you need to get your bed hygiene in order. That will definitely reflect positively on your hair and skin.”

If you happen to have especially sensitive skin, your breakouts could be contributed to dyes present in your sheets. Specifically, plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Newman notes that simple hypoallergenic white sheets might limit the frequency of your breakouts.

More: The Best Gifts for the Insomniac in Your Life

It’s along the same lines as swapping out your detergent — a seemingly harmless move enticed by a sale at your grocery store that leads to a random rash. Because you spend one-third of your day wallowing and nesting in your sheets, Newman says they can be a game-changer for certain skin types.

“Color isn’t a bad thing," he clarifies. "However, nothing else is in contact with your face as much as sheets."

42 Percent of Films at Sundance Were Directed by Women — Here Are Some of the Best

The entertainment industry has been talking for the last several years about trying to find ways to get women into positions of power in front of and behind the camera. With these issues come discussions of equal pay and the #MeToo movement.

More: 8 Female Athletes Who've Spoken Out About Equality in the Sports World

This year, the 2018 Sundance Film Festival is taking the lead by proudly showcasing work by women, especially in the role of a director. Even though there is more work to be done and changes need to be instituted on the studio side, the statistics are encouraging:

  • 42 percent of all shorts and features were directed by women
  • Of the 122 feature film selections, 37 percent were directed by women
  • Of the 69 short film selections, 51 percent were directed by women

Here are a few female-centric films directed and produced by women that you should keep your eye on during the Sundance Film Festival.

The Tale

Laura Dern The Tale

The Tale is one of the hottest titles at the Sundance Film Festival this year. It stars Laura Dern, who is still riding the wave of her Emmy and Golden Globe success from Big Little Lies. The movie, directed by Jennifer Fox, looks into a woman’s memory and how the passage of time makes her reevaluate her very first sexual experience — and the darkness surrounding it.

Fox’s first documentary, Beirut: The Last Home Movie, won the 1988 Grand Jury Prize Documentary at Sundance. Twenty years later, she’s here with a film that is ripe for the #MeToo movement and filled with a stellar cast, including Dern, Ellen Burstyn, John Heard and Jason Ritter.

RBG

RBG are the initials for the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The documentary film, directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, follows her incredible career in a time when many women feel their rights in the workplace are under assault again.

This documentary gives an exclusive look behind the scenes beyond her professional life. Don’t let Ginsburg’s tiny stature fool you — she’s small but mighty.

Private Life

If you haven’t discovered director Tamara Jenkins' 1998 delight, Slums of Beverly Hills, starring a young Natasha Lyonne, add it to your Netflix queue now. She also had great success at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival with The Savages, which went on to receive two Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay.

Now, Jenkins is about to hit Sundance with a new film, Private Life. Her movie tackles a couple’s marital difficulties while undergoing fertility treatments. It’s a very contemporary story about difficulties many marriages have endured. The film stars Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti.

The title should give you all the information you need on what the film is about — Gloria Allred. Love her or hate her, the women’s rights attorney has been way ahead of the curve when it comes to calling out men for sexual harassment and assault. This documentary was codirected by Sophie Sartain and Roberta Grossman and will premiere on Netflix shortly after the Sundance Film Festival. Sartain and Grossman were going back and editing footage late in 2017 because the news was changing so quickly.

“I feel fortunate that Seeing Allred captures my passion and battle for justice for many victims of injustice,” Allred said in a Netflix press release. "The courage that my clients demonstrate, in speaking truth to power, inspires me every day as we fight together.”

This film revolves around a European woman who has lived an entire decade as a domestic slave. She bravely decides to escape her bleak fate and start over again. Before you wonder who is starring in this film — brace yourself — it’s a documentary.

The woman found the courage to leave thanks to director Bernadett Tuza-Ritter's presence while making the film. It’s a real-life horror story, yet the turn of events leaves the viewer with a message of inspiration and hope.

What the Aziz Ansari Allegations Teach Us About Our Limited Idea of Consent

$

When allegations of sexual misconduct involving comedian Aziz Ansari first surfaced, the reaction was immediate. For so many people — women in particular — the terrible date recounted by “Grace” (her name was changed) in the Babe interview sounded all too familiar: After a quick dinner, they ended up back at his place, where he repeatedly attempted to initiate sex despite her verbal and nonverbal cues to stop.

Unsurprisingly, alongside the many people who have found themselves in Grace’s position were those (mostly men) who couldn’t see what Ansari did wrong. After all, Grace could have been more forceful with her language or just gotten up and left his apartment, right? Surely she's only speaking up to advance her own career, taking advantage of Ansari’s fame, correct? (Reminder: She came forward anonymously.)

Not so fast, smug internet commenters — it’s not that easy regardless of whether the person had just won an award for creating and starring in a show portraying him as the perpetual nice guy, never able to land his perfect woman.

This is probably a good time for us all to have a chat about the concept and importance of “enthusiastic consent.” If this isn’t a term you’ve heard before, it means deliberately and clearly agreeing to and participating in sexual activity.

More: Our Narrow View of Sexual Assault Is Letting People Get Away With It

During my college’s freshman orientation (around 15 years ago), we all had to attend a seminar entitled “No Means No,” and all the women at the university were given bright-red rape whistles. While, yes, this was better than nothing, it’s absolutely sending the wrong message regarding consent: That unless a person specifically says “no” or literally blows an ear-shattering whistle, then they are indirectly consenting. Enthusiastic consent turns that concept on its head — only yes means yes.

What is enthusiastic consent?

Luckily, at this point we’re (hopefully) beyond arguing the value of consent. After all, as Shadeen Francis, a therapist, educator and author who specializes in social justice and sex therapy, points out, without consent, you have abuse. But she says the premise of enthusiastic consent is more elusive.

“When I teach students and couples about enthusiastic consent, I am talking less about things like jumping up and down with excitement — although that is awesome! — and more about clear, affectively affirmative agreements to participate in an experience,” Francis tells SheKnows. “Enthusiasm as a standard of consent is meant to help clarify the places at which initiators unintentionally and sometimes unknowingly cross from sexual experience to sexual assault.”

Dr. Fran Walfish is a Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist, author of The Self-Aware Parent, regular expert child psychologist on The Doctors  (CBS TV) and costar of Sex Box (We TV). She says enthusiastic consent did not occur in Grace’s encounter with Ansari.

After forced mutual oral sex and other unwanted behaviors, when Grace declared boundaries and Ansari ignored her and plowed forward, this was, to Walfish, the turning point when this became a case of sexual harassment and abuse.

“At that point, my heart rate accelerated when I understood the implied power differential in their physical size, not status,” she tells SheKnows. “Sadly, this type of behavior occurs frequently in the dating scene, and not just among Hollywood's [big-] name celebrities. Put bluntly, Ansari treated his date disrespectfully and selfishly.”

Ansari has responded to the allegations in a statement in which he confirms he did go on the date with Grace, saying, “It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said."

The fact that Ansari was “surprised and concerned” that Grace felt violated by his actions during their date reinforces the idea that our concept of consent needs some serious work. No one should be in a situation in which what they construe as a sexual assault comes across to the other person as a consensual encounter or simple miscommunication.

MoreWhy Terry Crews Talking About Being Sexually Assaulted Is a Game-Changer

And while Ansari is being applauded for acknowledging that the night with Grace did happen as she said it did, he claims he thought the entire evening was consensual, and no part of his statement contained an actual apology. In fact, specifying that he was “surprised and concerned” to find out he and Grace were not on the same page shifts the blame back to her, making it sound like it was her fault for not being clearer about her sexual disinterest.

Not to mention that “surprised and concerned” is what parents say to teenagers about a bad report card or broken curfew. It is not an apology.

Even if he did apologize for his behavior, we also can’t accept someone blatantly ignoring someone else’s signals to stop, then saying he’s sorry for it and getting away with the whole thing. As writer/comedian Lane Moore notes on Twitter, this happens all the time, and the perpetrator only apologizes after getting what he wanted out of the situation.

Why is enthusiastic consent important?

When it comes to sexual negotiation, it is easy to be misinterpreted or misunderstood, Francis points out. Both verbal and nonverbal communication can be nuanced, subtle, layered and even contradictory.

“This is why sexual assault narratives often feel controversial: Was it assault or wasn't it?” she explains. “In a ‘no means no’ culture that often lacks emotional intelligence training and comprehensive sex education to back it up, we often reduce that message to mean that only a direct an explicit no means no.”

In reality, there are many ways to communicate disinterest, discomfort and displeasure, Francis explains. And even when a no is verbalized, if it’s spoken in a seemingly half-hearted manner, it may not be considered as final as someone shouting the word while running toward the door, she adds. Enthusiastic consent aims to avoid any potential misunderstandings or miscommunications by ensuring that all participants are active, willing participants.

Not only that, but only practicing no-means-no consent misses that relationships are not always balanced in privilege, in power — social, economic or physical — and in skill, Francis says, adding that people who feel disempowered in the moment or fear consequences later may not be able to ‘just say no.’”

“Expecting all messages to be clear and direct in that way ignores the fact that these imbalances in relationships matter,” Francis explains. “It is not unusual for folks to give in or even say yes to participate because they feel coerced or otherwise compelled to do so — even if the other person is not intending to be coercive.”

These narratives are told over and over again by employees, survivors of previous assaults, students, those who are surprised by the sexual encounter, by people who are financially dependent on the other person, by people who are marginalized on the basis of ethnicity or nationality, by women, by trans folks and by gender nonbinary people, Francis says.

More: The Impact of Sexual Harassment on Mental Health

“With all of this room for ambiguity and pressure, emotional tone can be a useful indicator of whether an experience is consensual or not,” she adds.

What does enthusiastic consent actually look like in practice?

According to Walfish, it includes partners checking in with each other, especially when proceeding into a more intimate space by asking, “Is this OK?” or, “Does that feel good?”

Following up with physical, nonverbal cues from your partner is always a good idea.

“If your partner flinches, suddenly tenses up or you sense discomfort in them, check in with how they are doing in the moment rather than proceeding full speed ahead,” Walfish continues. “Mutual pleasure, mutual orgasm and excitation between two people can only be present with two willing partners on an equal playing field.”

If some sort of power and privilege differentials exist between partners, it’s especially important to be mindful that all parties involved are enjoying themselves and are there willingly and enthusiastically — even if you’re one of the “nice” ones.

How to Talk to Kids About Gender

$

These days, it can seem like gender is making headlines every day — and it's about time. More and more, trans and genderqueer folks are in the public eye, from the fall elections (which saw the first transgender officials elected to many local- and state-level positions around the country) to popular television shows Transparent and Queen Sugar.

As a queer person with a doctorate in gender studies who is also pregnant, I think a lot about how I will discuss the ever-growing diversity of gender identities and expressions with my soon-to-be child. But here’s the thing: You don’t need a Ph.D. in gender to talk to your kids about it. Below, I’ve outlined three simple ways any parent, caregiver or teacher can broach the topic with kids of all ages.

More: What Exactly Is Gender-Neutral Parenting?

1. Call it out

I’ve seen it too many times when I’m out with a friend who presents outside the male/female gender binary: Kids turn to their parents with questions, and there are really only two responses. Either the parent tells the child it isn’t polite to stare and stops the conversation entirely, or the parent engages with the child, attempting to explain gender diversity in some way. I’ve heard various versions of the latter, and there's no single correct explanation. That said, it's always better to tackle questions about gender head-on rather than sidestepping them — or worse, saying nothing at all, which signals to the child that gender diversity is somehow bad or something we're not supposed to talk about.

Social worker Ellice Plant explains, "Kids make meaning for themselves and are capable of answering their own questions. If we show them that gender is fluid, with our language and our actions, they will understand gender identity in ways that make sense to them.” And when given the opportunity to understand gender fluidity, kids will better understand the world around them, including their own identity.

2. Mix it up

Many parents I’ve talked to use different tactics to demonstrate gender diversity in the everyday. Some change the pronouns when reading stories to their children, especially when the activities portrayed are stereotypically gendered — if the “girl” bear is always wearing pink and shown cooking, for example, they'll turn that character into a “boy.” Parents who have chosen to raise their children in a gender-fluid way often use a similar pronoun switch when referring to their children. This is especially important in languages that are heavily gendered; for example, Anna Kirey, a human rights worker who speaks Russian, switches between pronouns when talking to and about her child. Cory Silverberg, educator and author of several children’s books on topics surrounding gender diversity, has noted the importance of gender-neutral terminology when referring to children more generally: using terms like “kiddos” instead of “boys and girls" helps kids think outside the binary.

3. Figure it out as you go

Back in October, I attended a Philadelphia Family Pride conference on queer parenting, where one of the sessions focused on talking to kids about gender diversity. At the start of the session, both the leaders of the discussion and the participants agreed: As with most things in parenting, there is no one “right” way to talk to your kids about gender. There are some important elements, of course, such as reflecting on your own experiences of gender and how they have shaped you, surrounding your child with books that demonstrate gender diversity, learning about shifts in terminology, paying attention to linguistic and cultural specificities and listening to people who are differently situated along the gender spectrum. But in general, we are all figuring it out as we go — so don't stress about getting it "right" all the time.

More: 5 Ways to Make Sure Our Sons Don't Grow Up to Be the Next Harvey Weinstein

The important thing to remember in all this is that kids are not born understanding gender one way or another; they are shaped by what they learn. Given the chance, you will be surprised how easily they catch on to what may seem like complex notions about gender diversity. So let them!

Ann Curry's First TV Interview in 2 Years Promises to Be a Revealing One

For the last couple of years, Ann Curry has stayed behind the scenes, working on her own production company after being ousted from Today. But finally, Curry is returning to her spot in front of the camera. According to Vulture, she will give her first on-screen interview since 2015 when she sits down with CBS Good Morning on Wednesday, Jan. 17. And yes, she will be discussing Matt Lauer.

More: Dirty Details of Ann Curry's Tortuous Last Days on Today

For those who may be fuzzy on the details, Curry and Lauer have a long and tumultuous history. When Meredith Vieira left Today in 2011, Curry was tapped to replace her, stepping into the cohost role alongside Lauer. But rumor had it Lauer was not a fan of Curry. He reportedly organized her ouster, acting standoffish and holier-than-thou when he was with her on-screen, while crew made fun of Curry's outfit choices and mocked her lack of chemistry with Lauer. This was all a very open secret — no one has ever really admitted to it, but when Curry tearfully announced she was leaving the show in 2012, viewers knew Lauer was to blame.

Curry's departure happened just as Good Morning America took over first place in the morning show ratings, beating Today's 16-year streak. As Curry left and Savannah Guthrie took over, Today lost more than a fifth of its viewers. Still, as popular as Curry was, she stayed away from on-screen work in the aftermath of the scandal.

Since Lauer was fired in late November, Curry has spoken out only briefly, telling People magazine that she was "still really processing" the news. She had more to say, however, about her support for the #MeToo movement.

"The battle lines are now clear," she said. "We need to move this revolution forward and make our workplaces safe."

No matter what goes down, expect her Wednesday interview to be explosive.

To say that Call Me by Your Name, Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, has been well-received is putting it lightly. It’s been called “one of the most mesmerizing films of the year, an “erotic triumph,” a “ravishment of the senses,” “enchanting,” not to mention it nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama and is considered to be an Oscar favorite.

The film is based on the 2007 novel by André Aciman, and it tells the coming-of-age story of 17-year-old Elio (played by Timothée Chalamet) during the summer of 1983. Elio lives with his parents in a dreamy Italian villa, and each summer, his professor father invites a student to stay and live with them; this summer, it’s Oliver (played by Armie Hammer), a 20-something American.

Aside from the truly moving characters — both Chalamet and Hammer received Golden Globe nominations for their roles — a huge part of the film’s appeal, like all of Guadagnino’s films, is the swoonworthy set.

Villa Albergoni, a 17th-century estate in the Lombardy countryside, stands in as the family home. Guadagnino has described it as “beautiful, and a little bit sad, even.” To transform the large, mostly empty home into a period-appropriate set, he tapped his friend and interior designer Violante Visconti di Modrone. She scoured antique stores for furniture and art and found various props in her own father’s home, but what really sets the warm, sumptuous tone for the house are the textiles, largely sourced from Dedar.

After visiting the Dedar showroom a few years ago, Guadagnino has been collaborating with the textile brand to use their fabrics in all of his films. (The villa in I Am Love, the 2009 film starring Tilda Swinton, is also draped with Dedar.) For Call Me by Your Name, the fabrics set the stage for nearly every room in the house, whether used on the vintage sofas in the living room, a wall covering in the office or as a tablecloth in the dining room.

The account has alerted us to the new PB&J Oreo, the Starbucks Christmas tree Frappuccino and several others. And the rumored Ben & Jerry's additions make sense. In 2017, Half Baked, Cherry Garcia and Chocolate Fudge Brownie made their way to the top of Ben & Jerry's top 10 flavors list. All of them include fudge elements. Birdsall told TMZ she and Seal were neighbors at the time and became close friends while they lived near each other. But she said one day, when she was in Seal's kitchen getting the salad spinner she had lent him previously, he "lunged" at her.

She claims she asked him what he was doing, and he replied, "I'm kissing you!" She says he then told her that because of what she was wearing (a tank top and shorts) she was "asking for it," and tried to grope her breasts until she demanded that he stop. "In shock," Birdsall then sat down on the couch with Seal, where she says he groped her again. She then left and claims she has had no contact with him since.

Birdsall told TMZ she saw comments Seal made on Instagram about Oprah and the #MeToo movement, and that pushed her to come forward with her story. Ironically, Seal also posted a follow-up video to his Instagram, encouraging women to come forward and tell their stories.

The Real Story Behind the Bizarre Assassination of Gianni Versace

$

The shocking murder of iconic fashion designer Gianni Versace was the last in a string of shootings by a delusional serial killer. Here's what really happened.

Versace was a darling of the fashion industry. His designs graced women as varied as Princess Diana and Courtney Love; his infamous black safety pin dress gave Elizabeth Hurley a career. He and his partner of 15 years, Antonio D'Amico, lived a jet-set lifestyle most of us can only dream of, with homes all over the world. But in seconds, it all came crashing down in a random act of violence — or was it random after all?

More: The Real Story Behind Anastasia Is So Much Sadder Than the Movie

The morning of July 15, 1997, began in an unusual way for Versace, explained Vanity Fair's Maureen Orth in an article that was the precursor to her book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace and the Largest Failed Manhunt in History (which in turn is the basis for the new TV miniseries American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace). Instead of sending his assistant to fetch the morning papers, Versace decided to enjoy the beautiful weather and fetch them himself. When he returned to his Miami mansion, he was accosted at the gate and shot twice at point-blank range.

Versace died where he fell, on the steps of his lavish villa. A witness directed one of Versace's friends in the direction of the shooter, but after the shooter ran into a parking garage, all they found was a pile of clothing next to a pickup truck.

And in that pickup truck was all the information they needed to connect Versace's murder with suspected spree killer Andrew Cunanan.

More: Steve Jobs: The Real Story Behind Jobs & His Daughter Lisa

Cunanan, a recent addition to the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, was on the run and already the prime suspect in four other murders in Minneapolis, Chicago and New Jersey. The truck next to which he left that pile of clothing while making his getaway from the Versace mansion belonged to one of his victims, cemetery caretaker William Reese. In the truck, police found Cunanan's passport, a personal check with his name on it and a pawn shop ticket for a gold coin he stole from his victim in Chicago, Lee Miglin. Immediately prior to those murders, Cunanan had bludgeoned former best friend Jeffrey Trail to death in Minneapolis, and later shot former boyfriend David Madson with Trail's gun — the same gun used to kill his next two victims, including Versace.

After more than two months on the run, Cunanan, who had a history of convincing wealthy older men to support his lavish lifestyle, landed in Miami. Why did he target Versace? Some say he and the designer knew each other from the club scene. D'Amico and the Versace family deny this; they believe Cunanan simply knew he would finally achieve his dream of being famous if he killed such an iconic figure.

More: Rosemary Kennedy's Real-Life Story Is What Nightmares Are Made Of

He succeeded.

Cunanan's face was being blasted across TV screens and newspapers worldwide, yet the police could not find him. A full eight days after Versace's murder, they got a huge break in the case purely by chance: a houseboat's caretaker noticed lights and movement on board and called the police. However, by the time police entered, it was too late. Cunanan had shot himself in the head with the same gun he used to kill William Reese and Jeff Trail.

The fashion world mourned Versace, and his star-studded funeral was attended by grief-stricken celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Elton John, Carla Bruni, Sting, Karl Lagerfeld, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and, in an eerie foreshadowing of her own death just a month later, Princess Diana. Campbell and John were both seen sobbing at the services.

Versace's death changed the fashion scene forever. His sister Donatella took over running the company, and his niece Allegra inherited 50 percent of his estate. D'Amico, who did not enjoy a close relationship with the family, lost his job as a Versace designer and became embroiled in a legal battle for the inheritance Gianni wanted him to have. In the end, he settled for a fraction of the inheritance and became all but a recluse.

American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace examines the case using Orth's book as its basis. How much of it is true is still a matter of debate for Gianni's friends and family, but you can decide for yourself on Friday, when the show airs on FX.
