The Trendiest Baby Name of All Time Is... Linda?!

$

We all know popular baby names get plenty of time in the spotlight and prominent placement in baby name books every year. But what about trendy names? Apparently, they're not at all the same thing — as everyone named Linda (including activist Linda Sarsour, above) is just now learning, probably with mixed feelings.

According to BuzzFeed, biotechnologist David Taylor used data from the Social Security database to look at names that super-peaked in popularity and then subsequently fizzled out fast. Yep, "popular" names have longevity over time, appearing again and again in the database, whereas "trendy" ones get crazy-popular crazy-fast and then... flop. The one name that stood out for flying too close to the sun only to get burned? Linda. According to Taylor's findings, at one point, 5.5 percent of all girls in the U.S. were named Linda. And given the myriad name choices out there, 5.5 percent is quite a lot.

More: Baby Girl Names With Great Meanings She Can Be Proud Of

Taylor points to the fact that in 1955, singer Jack Lawrence released a song called "Linda" that hit the top of the charts. Mental Floss reports Lawrence wrote the song specifically for Linda Eastman, the daughter of his attorney, who would later go on to be Paul McCartney's first wife. Thanks to the hit song, the name Linda got a huge bump in short-term popularity. But what marks it as trendiest is that its decline in popularity was just as sudden. After '55, the name fell out of favor.

More:  These Pretty Girl Names Are Both Super-Romantic & Original

Some of the other short-lived name trends Taylor discovered through his data mining include Shirley, which peaked in the late 1930s; Debra, which had its heyday in the '50s; and Ashley, which rose to prominence in the mid-1980s. But those names spent a bit more time rising and falling in popularity, so Linda is definitely the unquestionable winner when it comes to trendiness.

Taylor's data also supported findings that in general, boy names don't have as much flux in popularity as girl names. "There are really only two boys' names that one would consider a sharp peak [Jason and Dewey]," Taylor wrote. "The other three are presidents' names or, in the case of Dewey, that of the hero of the Spanish-American war." He also mentions that any information gathered using data before 1936 should be taken lightly since the Social Security Administration didn't issue Social Security numbers before then.

Liev Schreiber Opens Up About His Split From Naomi Watts

Updated Jan. 6, 2018, 12:30 p.m. PT: Ugh, we're still crying a little bit over Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber being over and done with after being such a fab couple for so long. So what do they do? They go and tear open our wounds again by being so sweet and hopeful about their separation.

During an appearance on Sunday Today With Willie Geist, Schreiber opened up about moving on from Watts.

"It’s always hard, you know? You build a life with someone and things change. And I think the way that we’ve looked at it is that we’ll always be partners and that’s what kind of keeps us together and keeps us amicable," he said. "But I think we’re more than that, I think we also genuinely really care about each other."

He continued, "It’s important to support each other, you know? It’s really important. I was making some jokes this morning at breakfast about mommy with the boys, and their eyes light up when I talk about her. You can see how important it is to them that their parents care about each other and that no matter what happens, you continue to try and do that."

I'm not crying, you're crying!

Original story published Sept. 27, 2016: Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber have separated after 11 years together. We know, it's pretty darn shocking.

The couple, who share two children, released a joint statement about their decision to part ways on Monday. In it, they said they'd come to the conclusion "that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple.

"It is with great love, respect and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship," they continued before asking for privacy during this time.

The news obviously comes as a surprise to fans, but to insiders, it's not all that shocking. A source on set of Schreiber's series Ray Donovan told People magazine, "They have been on the rocks for quite a while."

The reports of trouble in paradise were echoed by an E! News source, who told the publication that it wasn't a single event that caused the split, but rather that it was "a long time coming." However, unlike so many other Hollywood splits that turn bitter and nasty, that's not expected to happen with these two, as the source said, "They'll still be good friends and co-parents."

And if their Instagram accounts are anything to go by, it appears that the pair are still on good terms — as just three weeks ago Watts shared a selfie of her and Schreiber.

Last week Schreiber also made an appearance on her social media, as she shared a photo of him and their son Alexander Pete (also known as Sasha) getting ready for the 2016 Emmys.

Just a few weeks ago, Schreiber also took to Instagram to share a sweet picture of Watts, which he captioned with, "Ay dios mio..." which translates to "oh my god."

While we're obviously sad to learn that these two are parting ways, it sounds like they have nothing but mutual respect and adoration for one another, and we hope that it stays this way in the months to come.

There's Another Royal Baby (Yep) on the Way

There's a legit bumper crop of royal babies headed our way — and Queen Elizabeth is getting yet another great-grandchild. The Duchess of Cambridge, commonly known by her maiden name, Kate Middleton, needn't worry, however, because the next tiny royal won't arrive until after she gives birth to hers.

According to Cosmopolitan, Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter, Zara Tindall, is now expecting a second baby with her husband, Mike Tindall. While that news may not quite come with the royal clout of Kate and William's third child, it does mean Charlotte and George will have a brand-new cousin coming their way.

Cosmo adds that the happy news comes after the heartbreaking announcement Zara experienced a miscarriage last December. The couple also has a 3-year-old daughter, Mia, together. The BBC reports that the queen and royal family are very pleased to be welcoming what will be the seventh royal great-grandchild.

More: Your Guide to Royal-Baby Living

Kate and William are expecting their baby in April, well before the projected due date of Zara's baby, who is set to arrive during the summer. Zara is the daughter of Queen Elizabeth's only daughter, the Princess Royal, Anne. The BBC adds that Zara is a member of Great Britain's equestrian eventing team and that she earned a silver medal during the 2012 London Olympics and the 2006 Eventing World Championships. But don't worry. Mike isn't a slouch, either. He's a rugby champ who helped the English National Team take home the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

When the new baby does arrive, he or she will be the 19th person in line for the throne. Thankfully, new laws regarding royal succession were recently passed, so if the Tindalls do welcome a little girl, she — like her cousin Charlotte — won't get bumped in line if more royal sons enter the picture.

The Tindalls' daughter, Mia, is already a fixture at the palace. People reports that she's often photographed holding the queen's handbag during royal photo shoots and is pretty chummy with Prince Harry. The bosom buddies share hugs and kisses and hang out at polo matches — as royals are wont to do.

Hey, Siri, Should I Have a Baby With My Boyfriend & His Wife?

$

Somewhere along the Long Island Expressway in a sedan full of 30-year-old women, the question of motherhood was posed. One of us had just had a baby with her partner of 10 years. The others were a mix of very single and very dating. As someone who practices ethical non-monogamy, I felt like a curious mix of all of the above.

“Do you want to have kids?” one woman asked me.

“How would that... work?” asked another.

TL;DR: I’m dating a person who is married to another person. We all date other people. We also all love each other and are committed to each other and our poly fam, whatever shape it takes.

More:  I'm Glad I Went to an Orgy While Pregnant

At that moment on the LIE, it seemed possible my boyfriend and his wife might get pregnant and that sooner than I had anticipated, I might have to confront whether I wanted to be a mom, or at least motherhood-adjacent.

My friends' queries about how, exactly, that would work for me were fine questions. Fair questions. I had faced questions like this many times before in conversations about my relationship structure. But in some ways, having kids is a thing that scratches at the limits of the architecture of non-monogamy (perhaps unsurprisingly since having kids can also serve as the ultimate benchmark of any “real” heterosexual relationship). How could I have kids in my situation? If I want kids but don’t get to have them in my current relationship, what then?

It wasn’t that I had never asked myself these questions; I’d been asking them of myself long before I began practicing polyamory. It was just that when it came to motherhood — that day on the LIE, as ever — I just didn’t really know the answer. For much of my life, I have been a member of that closeted club: parenting-agnostic women.

So, for the time being, I suggested the only reasonable response.

“Ask Siri.”

My friend in the front seat produced her phone and held the microphone to her mouth. “Hey, Siri, should Acacia have a baby with her boyfriend and his wife?”

The car erupted with laughter and then hushed as we waited for the phone's proclamation.

“I’m sorry. Only Acacia can answer that question.”

Siri, robot therapist.

Parenting had come up early in my relationship in hypothetical terms. My boyfriend and I were plotting our "relationship map," prodding its probable expansions into uncharted territory.

My boyfriend’s wife and I also freely fantasized about being pregnant at the same time. We joked about being sent off to a farm together to complete our gassy and hormonal expansions in remote privacy. Once, she fawned out loud about how goddamn adorable his and my child would be, and my heart thudded with a combination of gratitude and love. Other times, we lamented that she and I couldn’t have a kid together, the two of us. (Biology admits less than the imagination.)

My boyfriend and I joked too, but the question of co-parenting also felt weighty, with real implications. One day, a theoretical conversation about public schools became concrete. “I can never give you a stigma-free kid,” he said, and we talked about what that would mean. The choose-your-own-adventure quality of our relationship emboldened me to ask questions I might not have had the courage to ask a monogamous partner. It also built a rock-solid foundation of communication and trust that has made everything else in our relationship possible.

We established early that it would be hypothetically possible for us all to co-parent happily and successfully. But questions hung in the air: questions of whether we would authentically choose to go down that path together — the two of us and the three of us — and when and on what terms.

All relationships are like a buffet where certain items are off-limits. Sexual exclusivity is only one possible item. What about holidays? What about sharing finances? Cohabitation? Watching porn together? Shared hobbies? People draw their own boundaries through communication and imagination. In monogamy and marriage, there’s a certain menu already (which you could admittedly disregard, as many do); in polyamory, it’s à la carte. This quality ultimately empowered me to think about whether I wanted to be a parent in general and whether I wanted to parent here, with these wonderful people.

More: Where Is the Maternity-Wear for Queer Folks?

In the past, the idea of parenting — mothering, in particular — felt daunting to me. That life, its details, felt suffocating and mutually exclusive of many of the selfish privileges I enjoy.

Maybe I’ve grown and changed. Maybe it took finding radical, feminist partners who I trusted and who I knew could understand the burdens of women’s labor. Part of me thinks this is a benefit of polyamory. It's a dynamic relationship structure in which change is inevitable, fears are confronted (certainly not an easy task) and there’s no real road map. It’s strange, but by living in this atypical way, I became more accepting of the parts of myself that were drawn to perhaps the most typical human impulse: procreation.

I’m still ambivalent about motherhood. Some days, I want to have a family together with my polycule (polyamorous molecule); I want to watch little us-shaped humans confront the world and help them grapple with its mysteries. I want to laugh at their silly faces and comfort them through their pain. Other days, I imagine a totally different life path, one that takes me around the world unencumbered. One that sees me devoting all my free time to my passions in a way that isn’t conducive to parenthood. In these scenarios, I direct my parenting energy toward being an aunt, and I feel no regret.

Here’s what I do know: My decisions will be my own, and I am privileged to be able to make them with little regard for what tradition dictates or what society prefers.

As we close out the first week of January 2018, we have some fun news for viewers of Good Morning America and, in particular, fans of Lara Spencer. If you, like myself, have been a longtime fan of Spencer's work on GMA, then you'll likely know just how warm and fun she is to watch on the show. Now, it looks like Spencer is getting the equally warm and happy ending that she deserves because on Friday, Spencer's reps confirmed to People magazine that she was engaged to her boyfriend of two years, Rick McVey.

4 Food Lessons I Learned From the French

$

One of my favorite parts of traveling is trying local food, but more important, the culture that surrounds it. It varies from country to country. If you visit New York City, you'll notice most people eat on the go, and it's less a relaxing activity and more something people do just to keep them fueled for their day. When I spent four months in Greece a few years ago, the first few weeks drove me nuts because people would spend two to three hours eating dinner and my inner New Yorker was screaming "OH MY GOD HURRY UP!" It took a while to get adjusted and appreciate the laid-back vibe that accompanied meals there.

Over the years, I've explored the food culture of several countries, but when I think of the place that had the most lasting impact on my attitude toward food and how it's consumed, it was actually my most recent trip to France. I visited a tiny little town tucked away in the French Alps — Samoëns. I had been invited to the town for the grand opening of Club Med's newest resort, Grand Massif Samoëns Morillon. The resort has three restaurants that serve local dishes made by local chefs each day. After dining on exquisite French food with the French for a week, I had some major food revelations. Here are a few of my favorite takeaways.

1. Carbs are not the devil

In the U.S., no matter where you turn — TV, Instagram, Twitter, your neighbor — you're bound to find someone boasting about the weight-loss effects of a no- or low-carb diet. I'll save my comments on how this contributes to a fatphobic society for a later post, but let's focus on the health aspect of this for a second. Yes, starving your body of nutrients that it was designed to run on for a long period of time will cause weight loss. Is this the best way to achieve weight loss? More and more research is leading us to believe it is not. I myself got caught up in the no-carb craze last year when I tried the keto diet for a few months. But it didn't take me long to realize this is not a lifestyle that is manageable (or enjoyable) for me. This is something the French have always known.

Almost every meal I had in France contained a small but satisfying amount of carbs. And no, I'm not including the carbs in zucchini as carbs, I'm talking bread and pasta — you know, the fun carbs that you actually enjoy eating. This isn't hurting the health of French citizens. In fact, France has one of the lowest obesity rates in the world because they understand that starving yourself of something is not an effective or healthy way to live.

2. Moderation is key

This kind of ties into my first lesson, but seriously, order a dish at any American restaurant, and it is probably three to four times larger than the meals I ate in France. I never felt hungry or wanted more after the smaller meals I enjoyed in Samoëns. In fact, I felt more energetic because I never overate, sending myself into a food coma.

3. Dessert doesn't have to be full of sugar

I have a sweet tooth. I will probably never turn down a warm brownie if it's in front of me, but one of the best things I took away from my dining experience in France was a new idea of what dessert should be. Cheese, fruit and mildly sweet pastries were the norm, and they were absolutely delicious. Of course, I did indulge in some sweeter desserts — gelato, chocolate fondue — but because the portions were smaller and more reasonable, it didn't feel like an absurd amount of sugar to be consuming.

More: Why Sparkling Espresso Is the New Drink Trend You Need to Try

4. Meals should be savored, not rushed

I grew up in New York, and it's hard to shake that hurry-up-and-eat mentality, but once you do, it's a game-changer. Every bite is more enjoyable when you take the time to sit down and explore its complexity and layers of flavor. Dining should be a relaxing and fun experience. A time to sit down with friends and family, eat, talk and celebrate the flavors in front of you. I am making an effort not to eat in front of my TV anymore, not to eat while I work and not to eat while commuting. It's a hard lifestyle change to make, but one that comes with a lot of rewards.

Why Do We Clench & Grind Our Teeth When We Sleep?

$

Some of your sleepy-time habits you’re aware of: snoring when you’re sick or had too much to drink, tossing and turning when a work deadline has you feeling anxious or maybe talking while you’re in dreamland. Other common activities you might be less tuned-in to, but they happen more frequently than you realize, like clenching or grinding your teeth (also known as bruxism). The amount of damage you could cause to your smile and overall health depends on how often and how intensely you press and chatter. Here is a guide to what causes people of all ages to clench and grind while they’re nodding off and what to do if you’re part of this crowd.

What does it mean to clench or grind your teeth?

When you clench or grind your teeth at night, you're unconsciously pressing your teeth together tightly or even moving them back and forth against each other. Dentist Dr. Sabrina Magid-Katz explains that many people who have this nightly routine likely won’t realize it until a dentist notices the wear and tear on their teeth at their biannual cleaning. One symptom you might feel is sensitivity. As Magid-Katz says, the more you grind your teeth, the more you wear away the enamel, leaving you sensitive to hot or cold liquids.

More: 4 Totally Realistic Things You Can Do Today to Improve Your Health

What are the dangers of grinding your teeth?

So, you happen to grind your teeth a lot at night. No big deal, right? Nope. This is not a time to grin and bear it, Magid-Katz says. When your dentist recognizes this issue, they will likely be keen to solve it since over-grinding can cause a slew of issues ranging from negatively impacting the appearance of your smile to the compromising the actual structure and longevity of your teeth.

Clenching and grinding can cause loss of structure of the teeth at the gumline, which can make your gums sensitive and your smile less appealing, she notes. Not only that, but clenching and grinding can also cause loosening of the teeth, jaw problems or temporomandibular (where your lower jaw connects to your skull)  joint disorders, which results in facial pain, chronic headaches and clicking in the jaw and could lead to osteoarthritis of the jaw.

"Teeth grinding and clenching is very detrimental to the teeth, the supporting structures of the bone and gums and the muscles and joints which makes up the jaw mechanism," Magid-Katz adds.

Why do people grind their teeth?

The answer to this isn't quite as simple as you might like. Magid-Katz says many dentists debate the topic, with a slew of theories about what could be the culprit. “There are different opinions as to why people grind their teeth. While some think it is a stress habit, others think it is a discrepancy in the bite,” she explains. “Research also indicates that clenching can be a sign of an airway problem. Many medications cause grinding and clenching as a side effect.”

MoreThe Best Gifts for the Insomniac in Your Life

What to do if you’re clenching your teeth

If you suspect you’re locking down once the lights are out, it’s best to consult your dentist, who will lead you in the direction that’s best for your specific needs. According to Magid-Katz, there are several options they might suggest.

Oral appliance (mouth guard)

While it might feel cumbersome to sleep in, certain teeth clenchers need the extra help to ensure they’re not threatening the durability of their teeth. It won’t actually cure the issue, but Magid-Katz says it will protect your teeth and jaw. Don’t just head to your pharmacy, though. Make the time and investment to ensure it’s the ideal fit for your unique mouth.

“Determining the cause and correcting it can be very effective," Magid-Katz explains. "Over-the-counter oral appliances are available, but we don’t recommend them because of lack of proper bite and functional design. In addition, over-the-counter appliances are soft, and people tend to chew them, making the problem worse.”

Take a sleep study

Sometimes clenching your teeth can be an indicator of another sleep issue, so a study while you slumber may be effective. “It is important to rule out an airway problem as the cause of the clenching," Magid-Katz says. "Untreated sleep apnea can cause serious medical conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, impotence and depression. A sleep study may even be taken at home to provide insight as to how you are sleeping."

Reduce stress & be aware

If you’ve only recently started grinding after a difficult lifestyle shift or hectic few weeks, Magid-Katz says being aware of your stress levels can make a huge impact on your nighttime activity. This is why she recommends finding ways to decompress and de-stress, like yoga or meditation.

More: 9 Things You Can Do to Start Sleeping Better, Starting Tonight

You can also start to break the cycle if you feel yourself biting down while you’re awake too. “It is important to become aware of it so you can catch yourself and stop," she says. "The rule is ‘lips together, teeth apart’ unless you are chewing or swallowing or smiling.”

Insider Travel Tips From a Flight Attendant

Anybody who’s ever traveled through an airport has probably wished things could go a little… smoother. Whether it’s forgetting the things you need at home, struggling with your packing job at security or finding yourself famished before boarding and having to wait until hitting altitude to even look at a pack of pretzels, the reality is flying is not all roses.

That’s why we reached out to Heather, a Miami-based flight attendant of nearly four years. She gave us all the best travel tips she's collected from her frequent flying.

Her best tips for packing

It turns out flight attendants use the same tricks we’ve heard. “Pack as light as possible, put all your liquids in a 3-ounce or less bottle so as not to be thrown away when going through security, wear easy shoes to slip on and off for day-of travel and bring entertainment for yourself and/or family,” Heather said. One thing she recommended that you’re probably still not doing? “Pack unopened snacks of your own to avoid airport prices and being famished before and during flight.”

What she keeps in her carry-on

Health is the first priority in a carry-on, Heather says. “Hand sanitizer, Emergen-C, any meds I might need — Advil, Tums, vitamins, etc.,” she tells me. After that, the things that keep you comfortable and prepared should be prioritized: headphones, a pen, a phone charger, some kind of entertainment, whatever makeup is necessary and the savior of all flights, mints or gum.

How she fights the dryness of airplanes

Of course, drink water, Heather says. You can keep a small moisturizer in your carry-on or purse. A few other things that work wonders according to Heather are “nasal spray for those super-dry flights and altitude change, eye drops and some medicated lip balm for dry lips.”

More: Why Travel Can Be Such a Nightmare for Plus-Size Women

The best time to travel

No big insider secrets here, she says. Flights tend to be cheaper Monday through Thursday and distant from holidays. If you’re trying to find an uncrowded flight, stay away from Fridays and Sundays and “any holiday or season where kids and colleges are out of school.”

How to avoid jet lag

Get a good night’s sleep before your flight, eat well and stay super-hydrated, she told me, as well as trying to exercise and get your circulation going on the day of your flight. “If it’s a long red-eye flight, I take a couple-hour nap when I get in and then force myself to get up and move around so as not to ruin my sleep later that evening,” she said. She also tries to eat on the schedule she would at home. For example, she says, “If you’re from New York and going to LA and normally eat dinner at 6 or 7 p.m. Eastern, aim for a bigger meal at 3 or 4 p.m. Pacific.”

If you’re going to pack one food or beverage, make it…

...ginger ale. “Flights can sometimes run out of ginger ale because of its popularity, and I don’t like to take that chance,” Heather says.

What she wishes you knew about air travel

Kindness is key, she says. “You have no idea what people are going through or where they might be headed (funeral, family crises, stressful job interview or meeting, etc.). Being nice and courteous goes a long way and can avoid many issues.”

On a lighter note, planes are just not that clean, she says. “Wear your shoes when getting out of your seat and especially when going to the [lavatory.]”

Kardashian, who is expecting her first child, a boy, this spring with Tristan Thompson, told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday that most of the advice is appreciated, but some of it... not so much, especially when it comes to sister Kourtney Kardashian, who already has three kids of her own.

"Kourtney gives a lot of advice, and I think it's so sweet, but I don't want to do some of that stuff," Khloé revealed to laughs from the crowd.

She said, as an example, Kourtney is against all plastic toys.

"I'm like, well, if someone buys like, fucking blocks, I'm allowed to have blocks. Just, let me experience things," Khloé continued, "It's either her way or no way. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. Because we've been fighting a lot lately. We never fight."

Khloé continued that Kourtney also got upset because she wanted to put a TV in the nursery.

"I'm the worst person for ever wanted a TV," Khloé said of Kourtney's reaction, but Khloé said she wanted the TV in there so she could watch it while breast feeding.

"She's crazy," Khloé said. "She thinks she's, like, better than I because she doesn't watch as much TV, but I like to watch television."

Though she may be bickering a bit with Kourtney about plans for the baby, that won't keep her from including her whole family in the delivery process. Khloé did qualify that she'll have to talk with Thompson before making any firm plans, but she wants her family involved the whole way through.

"Watch out, Ohio," Khloé said of her plans to bring the entire Kardashian clan to Cleveland for when she gives birth.

Hair loss is a reality for many people, but it's certainly not exclusive to men. In fact, less than 45 percent of women go through life with a completely intact, full head of hair. But what causes hair loss in women, and can we do anything about it? Let's find out.

Hair loss in women: Common causes

All hair loss is not the same, and there are, unsurprisingly, many potential causes of hair loss in women. Here are a few of the most common types and their causes (and keep in mind this list is not exclusive — your physician will be the one to help you discover the cause of your hair loss, which may not be included here).

Androgenetic alopecia

According to Dr. Robert Nettles, hair loss expert and the founder of Stop and Regrow, the single most common cause of hair loss in women is androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern hair loss.

"Unfortunately many doctors and even dermatologists are not aware of quite how pervasive it is with women, and we often see patients in our clinic after their local physical or dermatologist has told them either they are imagining it or there is nothing that can be done," he says.

More: Is it Possible for Our Hair to Hurt?

It has a genetic component, and it's inherited by around 25 percent of women, Nettles says. While this can affect men and women, it affects both sexes differently. In women, hair loss is generally diffuse — instead of developing a bald spot or a receding hairline like men tend to do, women instead experience a gradual, all-over thinning.

Telogen effluvium

Another common cause of hair loss in women is telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss is also diffuse and is usually caused by physical stress, such as experiencing a severe illness, surgery, childbirth and so on. It can also be caused by medications. This type of hair loss isn't always permanent — generally, recovery happens on its own in around six months.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is where the hair loss appears in patches, often circular, and is thought to be autoimmune in origin.

Underlying disorders

There are also a number of disease processes that can result in hair loss. Thyroid disease, scalp infections, diabetes, lupus (or other autoimmune diseases) and others can be the culprit. Hormones can also deal your shining crown of hair a blow — even the biologically normal process of menopause.

Vitamin deficiency

Hair loss can be attributed to vitamin deficiencies, says Dr. Arielle Levitan, cofounder of Vous Vitamin. "Many women do not know that they run low in iron or Vitamin D, which are some of the most common offenders," she explains. "As a physician of internal medicine, I see women all the time very distressed about thinning hair." A simple blood test can help determine some of the more common culprits.

How do you treat hair loss?

Hair loss treatment really depends on the type of hair loss you're experiencing and what the causes are. This means your physician will need an accurate diagnosis, and for those with underlying medical conditions, treating the disease can often lead to less hair loss or regrowth.

For women who are experiencing hair loss due to vitamin deficiencies, there are various strategies you can put into place to improve your outcome. "Repleting vitamin D with healthy doses of D3 and correcting iron deficiency — by giving supplemental iron paired with vitamin C for better absorption — is essential, and biotin, a B vitamin, can be added to help the process, as it acts as a building block for new hair," says Levitan. "The challenge is this is a slow process, and it can easily take three to six months to see hair thickness and amounts improve."

For those with female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), the solution can be a little more complex. There are medical treatments available, however. Dr. Ken L. Williams Jr., surgeon, founder of Orange County Hair Restoration in Irvine, California, and author of Hair Transplant 360 — Follicular Unit Extraction, notes that the only FDA-approved medical treatment for this type of hair loss is Minoxidil 2 percent topical treatment. He also states that it seems to work better for women than for men.

There are other medical treatments available, so be sure to check with your doctor to find one that's right for you and your hair-loss situation.

It's important to keep in mind, however, that one treatment may not be the ultimate solution for your own head of hair. "Where hair loss becomes complex for women is because quite often there are multiple causes happening at once," says Nettles. This is why it's crucial to get a proper diagnosis and custom-tailored treatment.

Nutritional considerations

Also, even if medical reasons have been ruled out, it's a good idea to look at your overall diet and see if there are improvements that can be made. Jeanette Kimszal, a registered dietitian-nutritionist, recommends ensuring there is adequate protein in the diet in addition to eating foods high in iron, vitamin B's and vitamin C.

MoreHow Much Hair Loss Is Normal?

Unfortunately, there is no single solution that can halt hair loss or regrow hair. It's vital to consult with a doctor who can explore medical reasons and work with you to find an answer that might be able to work for you. Hair loss is certainly no fun, but there is a chance that with proper diagnosis and treatment, you may be able to do something about it.

Debra Messing Slams E! News While Talking to E! News

Debra Messing came to slay at the 75th Golden Globes, and she wasn't going to let anyone steal her shine.

Nowhere was that more evident than when, while on the red carpet, Messing didn't miss a beat in calling out E! News (while being interviewed by E! News, mind you) for its equal pay scandal in December 2017. The scandal ignited when longtime anchor Catt Sadler revealed she was leaving the network after discovering that her male co-host, Jason Kennedy, made almost double her salary for the past several years.

"Time is up and we want diversity, we want intersectional gender parity, we want equal pay," Messing said when E! host Giuliana Rancic asked her why she wore black to the Golden Globes in support of the "Time's Up" movement. "I was so shocked to hear that E! doesn’t believe in paying their female co-hosts the same as their male co-hosts."

Needless to say, that's a pretty bold move for Messing make, calling out the very network that's interviewing her. Way to stay spicy, Messing. Way. To. Stay. Spicy.

Messing continued, "I miss Catt Sadler, so we stand with her. That’s something that can change tomorrow. We want people to start having this conversation that women are just as valuable as men."

Rancic agreed with Messing's point, adding, "Absolutely. That’s really what this movement is all about. We have an amazing platform here. There are a lot of big great voices here tonight who can speak on behalf of [people] who don’t have these voices."

Messing is far from the only celebrity to speak out in support of Sadler ahead of the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Sadler told Page Six she is "immensely grateful" for all the support she received at the 2018 Golden Globes. It's nice to see Sadler getting the full support of her peers, and it's especially good to see Messing standing her ground, even at the risk of things getting a bit awkward.

These Are Seth Meyers' Sickest Burns From His Golden Globes Monologue

With the year Hollywood — and the country in general — has had, it was a safe assumption that Seth Meyers wouldn't hold back as host of the 75th annual Golden Globes on Sunday evening. And, true to form, the funnyman really sunk his teeth into the award show's opening monologue.

More: The Best-Dressed Celebs at the 2018 Golden Globes

As the first award show host out of the gate this season, Meyers had his work cut out for him. How do you build jokes around the sexual misconduct and political turmoil that have hijacked headlines without being too insensitive? It's a fine line to walk and, well, Meyers practically danced on it. But dressed in black to show solidarity with victims of sexual harassment and assault, Meyers struck the perfect balance of funny and sharp during his opening monologue.

Here are his 11 best zingers to prove it.

1. "It’s 2018. Marijuana is finally allowed, and sexual harassment finally isn’t. It’s gonna be a good year!"

2. "This was the year of big little lies and 'get out'... and also the television series Big Little Lies and the movie Get Out."

3. "There’s a new era under way, and I can tell because it’s been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood."

Seth Meyers Monologue 3

4. "For the male nominees in the room tonight, this is the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to hear your name read out loud."

5. [pointing to Seth Rogen] "Hey, remember when he was the guy making trouble with North Korea? Simpler times."

6. "We’re all here tonight courtesy of the Hollywood Foreign Press — yeah, give it up for the Hollywood Foreign Press — a string of three words that could not have been better designed to infuriate our president: Hollywood Foreign Press. The only name that would make him angrier would be the Hillary Mexico Salad Association."

Seth Meyers Monologue 1

7. "Well, I think it’s time to address the elephant not in the room. Harvey Weinstein isn’t here tonight because, well, I’ve heard rumors that he’s crazy and difficult to work with. But don’t worry, he’ll be back in 20 years, when he becomes the first person ever booed during 'In Memoriam.'"

8. "Well, despite everything that happened this year, the show goes on. Like, for example, I was happy to hear they were going to do another season of House of Cards. Is Christopher Plummer available for that too? I hope he can do a Southern accent, ‘cause Kevin Spacey sure couldn’t. Oh, is that too mean? To Kevin Spacey?"

Seth Meyers Monologue 2

Seth Meyers Monologue 2

9. "Daniel Kaluuya is nominated for Best Actor for his work in Get Out. Daniel plays a young man lured to an event full of aging white people desperate to reclaim their youth — AND OH MY GOD, DANIEL, IT’S A TRAP! Get out!"

10. "The Golden Globes turns 75 this year…" [hands mic to Jessica Chastain] "but the actress that plays its wife is still only 32."

11. "If you haven’t seen it, The Deuce is a show about Times Square in the early '70s, when New York was so seedy, there were two James Francos."

These amazing jokes just prove that Meyers was an excellent choice for host and, better yet, that when it came to call out all of the BS happening in Hollywood, Meyers was the right man for the job.

Laura Dern had a message for young children in her 2018 Golden Globe awards acceptance speech on Sunday night: Don't be afraid to tattle.

Dern won Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role as Renata Klein in Big Little Lies, a television show that is especially poignant given the "Time's Up" conversation happening across Hollywood right now. And Dern, fittingly, kept her acceptance speech just as timely.

Dern first gave the requisite thanks to those who helmed the show and helped bring Big Little Lies and Renata to life.

"Thank you, HFPA, for the honor of joining in the company of these extraordinary fellow nominees who inspire me so deeply. And namely, to the brilliant Shailene, Zoë, Reese and Nicole, my new family. To our fearless leader, Jean-Marc, to HBO and to our magical producers and, especially, for caring so much to make things work so that I could be part of this. I'm so forever grateful."

But then, as Dern went to thank the show's scribe, David E. Kelley, she launched into an important message about ending the culture of silence and especially encouraging women to not be afraid to speak up whenever necessary.

"To David E. Kelley, our superhero, who took Liane's words and gave me particularly the most outrageous, complicated woman and a terrified mother. Terrified because her little girl was being abused and bullied, and she was too afraid to speak up. Many of us were taught not to tattle. It was a culture of silencing, and that was normalized. I urge all of us to not only support survivors and bystanders who are brave enough to tell their truth but to promote restorative justice. May we also please protect and employ them. May we teach our children that speaking out, without the fear of retribution, is our culture's new north star. Bless you, bless everyone who worked on this, all the people who support me and my beautiful children. Thank you for all of your work and love. Good night."

Oh, Oprah, you can do no wrong. We've all known that to be true for a while. But Oprah Winfrey enlightened us to a different truth during her speech at the 2018 Golden Globe awards as she accepted the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.

Winfrey started by reflecting on her experience as a young girl, watching Sidney Poitier win an Oscar for Best Actor in 1964. Poitier was also given the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1982.

"It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given the same award," Winfrey said. "It is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them."

She thanked a number of people who supported her during her entire career, then transitioned seamlessly to championing women.

"Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have," Winfrey told the crowd. "I am especially proud of all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories we tell, and this year, we became the story."

Later in the speech, she said, "For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up."

She powerfully added her encouragement that we all do our part in the fight.

"So, I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'me too' again."

Her words inspired the audience of A-listers to stand and applaud before her speech was even over. And you can bet the internet was cheering right along with them.

The Biggest Health Trends of 2018 According to Top Doctors

One of the most exciting parts about the medical and health care space is that it’s constantly changing. Of course, new technology comes with new ethical challenges, but that means there are also more opportunities to help people prevent and treat a wide variety of health conditions. Now that 2018 is in full swing, let’s take a look at some of the biggest upcoming health trends straight from some of the leaders in the medical field.

1. Women taking ownership of their health

There were a lot of really frustrating and difficult parts of 2017, but as someone who focuses on women’s health and well-being, it was kind of great to see other people finally start paying attention and believing us. The good news is, Dr. Jocelyn Craig, a urogynecologist/OB-GYN and medical director of the Center for Women’s Pelvic Health at the Long Beach (California) Medical Center sees 2018 continuing in the same direction, with women putting their own wellness at the tops of their priority lists.

Traditionally, women are caregivers and have learned to put the needs of others first,” Craig tells SheKnows. “We now are also a large percentage of the workforce, and our own mind and body wellness has been pushed to the background. We are learning that in order to continue as well-balanced caregivers, women must take care of their own bodies and needs first.”

Craig also foresees women seeking to broaden their options in regard to their sexual health.

“I see more and more women seeking treatment for long-term urinary and fecal incontinence, but what impresses me more is how the #MeToo movement has encouraged women to be more open about issues of sexual health,” she says.

In particular, Craig says women are finding out there are so many options for treatment for sexual health issues, running the spectrum of complementary to traditional medical treatments, including mind-body work, pharmacologic agents and specific surgical treatments.

“Women are speaking up,” she adds. “They are saying ‘my body matters to me.’”

2. Advancements on breast cancer diagnosis & treatment

Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer occurring in American women. And according to Dr. Gary Levine, medical director at MemorialCare Breast Centers in Southern California, in 2018, we will continue to see the effects of technological advancements on breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

More: Get Ready, Because We're About to Drop Some of the "Breast" Facts Ever

For example, tomosynthesis (3-D mammography) will continue to supplant 2-D mammography as the gold standard for breast screening, he tells SheKnows.

In addition to that, new technologies recently developed will allow women who must undergo breast surgery to do so without undergoing a preoperative wire localization, adds Levin, who is also a past president of the National Consortium of Breast Centers. Specifically, large cohort studies with five years of follow-up will be published comparing the traditional six weeks of external beam radiation therapy to single-dose intraoperative radiation therapy for adjuvant treatment of localized breast cancer following lumpectomy.

Craig also says cancer genomics and individualized breast cancer therapy will continue to advance.

3. Improvements in gastroenterology

When something doesn’t feel right in your tummy area, it’s easy to pass it off as a “stomachache" (even though it's unlikely it’s your literal stomach) and overlook symptoms of various gastrointestinal issues. But now, with more people aware of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, we’re getting better at seeking medical help if it’s more than just last night’s takeout that’s making us feel unwell.

More: No, You Probably Don't Have a Stomachache

Dr. Ketan Shah, a gastroenterologist at Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, says the field will continue to make great strides, including in the treatment of acid reflux. Specifically, more durable, minimally invasive procedures for acid reflux will be increasingly performed.

“These treatments are incisionless and performed through the mouth, including transoral incisionless fundoplication procedure and Stretta,” Shah tells SheKnows.

Along the same lines, he says several new medications have recently been approved to treat IBS — both the kind associated with constipation and with diarrhea. This is especially good news for women, because IBS is two to six times more likely to occur in females and related to increased sensitivity in the gut in response to irritants and other stimuli.

Additionally, although esophageal cancer continues to be the most rapidly rising cancer in incidence in the U.S., it can be prevented by detecting it in its precancerous stage, called Barrett's esophagus, Shah says.

“Recent advances have been made in detecting and treating Barrett's esophagus, including advanced imaging techniques, a 3-D biopsy brush specially designed to detect Barrett's and various modalities to eradicate Barrett's before it develops into cancer,” he adds.

4. More women will be represented in research

One of the primary and underlying reasons medicine sometimes fails women is that we’re not always included in research. This is especially true for women of color. But according to Dr. Laurie Mortara, an infectious disease specialist at the Long Beach (California) Medical Center, that could change in 2018.

“With increased interest in ‘personalized medicine’ in which a person’s genetic makeup helps determine their response to medications, we need more information on how women respond differently to various therapies,” she tells SheKnows. “This has been recently focused on in the area of cancer research, and there has been interest in looking at this in cardiac research as well.”

5. It will be a safer year to have a baby

Unfortunately, the U.S. still lags behind many other developed countries in the prevention of severe maternal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period. Specifically, obstetrical hemorrhage and hypertensive complications of pregnancy continue to pose serious threats to pregnant women and their fetuses.

Fortunately, Dr. Gerardo Bustillo, an OB-GYN at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, indicates that 2018 promises continued awareness and understanding of these threats.

“Collaborative paradigms, such as patient-safety bundles and early warning alerts in electronic medical records, continue to be developed by many local and national organizations and promise even safer pregnancy and delivery experiences in 2018 and beyond,” he tells SheKnows.

Along the same lines, Mortara says women should expect more education and screening to protect themselves and their babies from infectious diseases, including the Zika virus. Similarly, women in California are being educated that their newborns are at risk for whooping cough and that all adults who hold their infant must have received a booster Tdap vaccine, Mortara adds.

6. More robotic-assisted surgery in gynecology

In 2018, Dr. Marc Winter, an OB-GYN and medical director of minimally invasive surgery at Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, thinks it will be a big year for robotic-assisted surgery, especially for hysterectomy (removal of uterus), myomectomy (removal of fibroids), treatment of endometriosis and pelvic prolapse surgeries.

“Robotic-assisted surgery has resulted in less time in the hospital; smaller incisions, which reduce risks of infection; minimal scarring; and faster recoveries,” he tells SheKnows.

More: Male Gynecologists on How They Chose Their Specialty

With that, Winter says we’ll also see new companies emerge with their technology, which will give surgeons more choices and start to drive down the technology costs.

“Controlling costs while maintaining and improving quality will be a big emphasis for health care in general,” he adds.

Overall, it sounds like health care in 2018 will be getting more personalized — especially for women. And as Craig reminds us, don’t forget to take care of yourself as well as others.

Apply sunscreen properly

Doctors and other skin pros have told us time and time again sunscreen is necessary and important, but are you applying it correctly? “Sunscreen can be applied before makeup or even as makeup,” says Dr. Mona Gohara, a Connecticut-based dermatologist. “Powder sunscreens have become a new favorite.” To keep steps to a minimum, try a foundation or moisturizer with sunscreen already built into the formula.

Dare to go makeup-free

Whether you prefer tons of makeup or an au naturale face, it’s a treat for your skin to go sans makeup at least one day a week. After all, the key to flawless makeup is amazing skin as your foundation. To feel most confident going bare, invest in products that reduce the appearance of pores. “A powerhouse combo for reducing pore size is using retinol every other night to reduce irritation and a charcoal mask once a week,” Gohara says.

Add adventure to your routine

From facials to chemical peels and everything in between, there are tons of beautifying treatments out there. If there’s one you’ve been dying to try, add some adventure to your skin care routine and try one. Not into daring treatments? A pampering facial will do the trick. “In addition to using topical treatments, getting a hydrating facial every few months will bring out the glow and soften skin,” says Gohara.

More: How to Cut Your Routine Down to 90 Seconds or Less

Narrow your focus

There’s nothing more frustrating than purchasing new products that don’t work for you. It seems like there’s a new product launch promising to brighten, tighten and lift everywhere we look. “Try to avoid the hype in skin care ads,” shares Gohara. “It’s best to stick with a few solid products that you know work.”

If you’re not sure where to start, try starting with brands you know agree with your skin type. Or if you prefer a more professional opinion, make an appointment to talk with a local dermatologist in your area.

Stick to a routine

Once you’ve found the products and begin a new routine, the most important part is to stick to it. Don’t let this resolution fall flat after a few weeks and especially not after a few days. It’s important to be consistent when taking care of your complexion. Most dermatologists recommend adopting a day routine and a night routine for best results. Also, remember it typically takes three to eight weeks to see proper results, so hold on for the ride and don’t give up!

Here’s to healthy skin and a happy you in the new year!

In a world filled with crazy crash diets, the low-FODMAP elimination diet stands out as a plan that might be helpful for people plagued with intense digestive issues. Many have experience relief by going low-FODMAP.

But the problem with low-FODMAP is people don't seem to be talking about it. Maybe it's because it's not exactly a sexy name, and it also tends to be a little complicated. First developed by researchers at Monash University to control symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, the low-FODMAP "diet" is not a diet, but a lifestyle change that's necessary and beneficial for those who are in excruciating pain on a daily basis. I encourage you to read this article to learn more about FODMAPs, but more important, talk to your doctor to see if this way of life is right for you.

Once you're armed and ready to take on this challenging way of eating (it's not that easy a transition), you'll scour the internet for recipes that are FODMAP-friendly and maybe join some Facebook groups. There are also lots of FODMAP-friendly recipes available on sites you might already frequent, though they aren't necessarily marketed as such. Here are 21 recipe options for you to get cracking in the kitchen.

1. Salt cod & potato cakes recipe

I love this recipe because it combines your protein with your side dish and tastes better than a crabcake. (Sigh... Remember crabcakes?) Since you're following a low-FODMAP diet, you won't be able to partake in the tartar sauce side, so try some FODMAP-friendly mustard instead.

2. Dilly egg salad recipe

Note: The acceptable portion size for an avocado is 1/8, so be mindful of that.

I like this recipe because you don't need to fire up the grill to enjoy a nice piece of steak. It calls for chili powder, so make sure you purchase one that is FODMAP-friendly, as some packaged spices have garlic added. The green onions are OK, but only the green parts, so don't eat the white.

Take all the fixings of a proper salad, add quinoa and feta, and congratulations: You have a protein- and vitamin-filled meal. Remember, when using the green onion, you can only eat the green parts — no white.

These stuffed tomatoes pack a mouthful of flavors in every bite. I love to make these as an appetizer option when I'm hosting a party or to bring them to a party I'm attending. To keep it FODMAP friendly, be sure you're buying plain bacon and not honey smoked or any other flavors.

Four ingredients and 15 minutes give you these pork chops, served with a kick. Pair with steamed green beans or a side salad. When I make these, I'll double ingredients so I have leftovers. I've also substituted the pork for chicken, and it's just as yummy!

An important note: Portion sizes and ingredients that might be OK for one person might not be OK for another. When starting the elimination part of the low-FODMAP diet, it is essential that you are educated, that you follow portion size rules and that you consider consulting a professional to help you through the process. As mentioned, updated research comes from Monash University, and they are one of the best online resources to visit. Keep in mind that these recipes were not necessarily created by those who follow a FODMAP diet but who happen to be low-FODMAP. Therefore, some ingredients and portion sizes will have to change accordingly.

In case you somehow fell asleep early on Sunday night, the 75th annual Golden Globes aired, and in doing so, managed to kick off a fresh awards season on a very high note. The star-studded affair was a study in — as award recipient Nicole Kidman put it — "the power of women."

It was virtually impossible not to be moved by the sense of solidarity, strength, support and passion displayed throughout the evening. From walking the red carpet arm-in-arm and raising awareness for the Time's Up and #MeToo movements to giving speeches full of hope, Hollywood's leading ladies set the tone for one hell of a new year.

In fact, you could argue that women pretty much stole the show. Need proof? Check out these major moments from the evening.

1. Amy Poehler's opening monologue gag

As part of a bit by Seth Meyers in the opening monologue, he handed off the mic to Amy Poehler. Er, sort of. In the hilarious moment, Poehler accused Meyers of mansplaining the bit. She also "reclaimed" her wine and teed herself up for a knee-slapping joke.

2. The sisterhood of Big Little Lies

GG Nicole Kidman

There was nothing little about the magic between the actors of Big Little Lies last night. Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Zoë Kravitz, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley celebrated not only the show's many wins, but also the wins the night symbolized for women in general. "So much of my career for 27 years I never got to work with another woman," said Reese Witherspoon when the cast accepted the award for Best Television Limited Series or TV Movie. "Seeing a more dynamic woman on film, I think this is just the beginning."

3. Carol Burnett's cameo

When comedy icon Carol Burnett took the stage to present awards, the crowd couldn't contain their admiration for the TV legend. And proving she's just as funny as ever, Burnett even delivered a sick burn (all in good fun, of course) to co-presenter Jennifer Aniston. "I'm happy that you're coming back to television," Burnett told a gushing Aniston, deadpanning,"Will & Grace was one of my favorite shows."

4. Natalie Portman sticking it to the man, er, men

When Natalie Portman and Ron Howard approached the podium to hand out an award together, no one predicted Portman would gift us with one of the best lines of the entire show.

Presenting the Best Director category, Portman zinged, "And here are the all-male nominees." Savage! Twitter loved it considering some highly deserving female directors were overlooked in the nominations (here's looking at you, Patty Jenkins and Greta Gerwig).

5. The Thelma & Louise mini-reunion

How fun was it that Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon shared the stage together nearly three decades after their cult classic, Thelma & Louise, hit theaters? We especially loved the part where Davis joked of the Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama category, "These five nominees agreed to give half their salaries back so the women can make more than them."

Barbra Streisand emerged to present the Best Movie — Drama award, but had a bone to pick before handing out the award to Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Taken aback by the commentators remark that she was the only female to ever win a Golden Globe for Best Director, Streisand exclaimed of 1983's Yentl, "That was 34 years ago? Folks, time's up!"

7. Debra Messing dragging E! for wage inequality

While being interviewed on the red carpet by E! host Giuliana Rancic, Debra Messing took the network to task for its treatment of former host Catt Sadler. [Sadler quit after more than a decade at E! upon learning her co-host Jason Kennedy had been making double her salary "for several years."]

Said Messing, "I was so shocked to hear that E! doesn't believe in paying their female co-host the same as their male co-host. I miss Catt Sadler. So we stand with her. And that's something that can change tomorrow. We want people to start having this conversation that women are just as valuable as men."

8. Oprah's speech to end all speeches

Our words simply won't do justice to Oprah's Cecil B. DeMille award speech, which — like her hug, if Reese Witherspoon is to be believed — could end wars. Do yourself a favor and watch every inspiring second:

For the first show of the awards season, you couldn't have asked for more than the Golden Globes delivered. Women (and men!) wore black in honor of the Times Up coalition to protest sexual misconduct and discrimination. They walked the red carpet alongside female social justice activists. They re-directed attention to the #MeToo movement. They championed each other in speeches. The entire night shone with a sense of empowerment and distinctive call to action.

Overweight Kid? Here's How to Talk to Them Without Hurting Them

Did your child's annual wellness visit to the pediatrician find them tiptoeing over into what some deem an "unhealthy" body mass index? Before you worry too much about that number, know it should not be used as a metric to determine overall health; in fact, research shows BMI is, well, a lie.

That said, licensed psychologist Dr. Denise Dixon notes that rates of supposedly "overweight" children and adolescents have risen dramatically since the 1970s — and that's not a great trend. Helping a child learn healthy relationships with food and exercise from an early age is essential, Dixon explains, especially since obese children from the age of 8 to 10 have an 80 percent chance of remaining obese as adults. But weight doesn't only have a relationship to a child's health; it can affect their self-esteem too.

That’s why it’s important to educate your child — gently and effectively — about health and body image. Here, psychologists shed light on the best ways to start the conversation.

Let them explain what they’re feeling

If your typically chatterbox child comes home without much to say and suddenly declares they are "fat," clinical psychologist Dr. Stephanie O’Leary says to bite your tongue and hear them out first. Your role here is detective, determining why — all of a sudden — they’re concerned about the numbers on the scale or their reflection in the mirror. “This allows your child to express their feelings and thoughts without editing based on your reactions, which can come across as judgments even if that's not what you intend,” she explains. For a child who is worried about a certain body part, you can respond, "It must be hard to feel that way," instead of telling them not to worry, which doesn’t validate their emotions. “Once you have the facts, you can begin to ask questions that will help you navigate the best course of action. This conveys support and understanding without challenging your child's perspective and leaves the door open for you to continue the dialogue,” O’Leary explains.

Ask questions

Once the ice has been broken and the anxiety about body image is on the table, you can tread carefully as you dig deeper to gain perspective from the child. O’Leary suggests asking follow-up questions, including: "How long have you been feeling this way?" or "Are kids talking a lot about weight at school?" While you might not get specific answers right away, O’Leary notes that by kindly probing, you send the message you’re there to listen and help your child mentally — and physically — deal with how they’re feeling.

If the tables get turned and your child starts asking you specific questions, O’Leary says it’s essential to respond in a way that reiterates that healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes. “Refocus the conversation on health and talk about ways to move toward keeping bodies healthy without linking that to weight or size. The message should not be 'eat well and exercise so you can be smaller' — it should be 'eat healthy and exercise so you can be healthy regardless of what your body looks like,'” she notes. And you can feel free to let your child know healthy habits usually lead to feeling great too.

Educate your child about healthy habits

As licensed clinical psychologist Kate K. Lund explains, you not only want your kiddo to eat more vegetables; you want them to make a personal commitment to maintaining an attitude that supports health throughout their life. Instead of constant hand-holding, give them the basics about what’s nutritious for their body and what doesn’t serve it well. “Empower the child to take ownership of the process and perhaps even plan and prepare a meal on a given night of the week on their own,” Lund says. “Then praise the child for their efforts and have the parent point out, in a positive manner, the ways in which the meal boosted his or her own energy.”

Give them more responsibility to build confidence

Part of the act of helping your child navigate their body image is building confidence in ways that aren’t about weight — such as activities or goals that will encourage a sense of accomplishment. “Just like the pride you see when your child first learns to ride a bike or snap their fingers, taking on a new household chore or being given additional responsibility goes a long way,” Lund explains. This is also an opportunity to remind them it’s not just perfect practice that should be rewarded, but effort. “Try to avoid praising your child for outcomes such as a specific grade or making a goal in sports and focus on praising efforts. Instead, send the message that your child's attitude and level of effort are most important and avoid the trap of confidence being contingent upon specific outcomes that are impossible to guarantee” — like weight loss.

Encourage self-love & a healthy body image

Dixon emphasizes how important it is to teach your child to love their body just as it is now. Even if their doctor encourages them to lose weight to improve their health, implementing a practice of self-esteem from the get-go will help them avoid centering their entire image on what the number reads on the scale. “The focus should be on what is right about the body, not what needs to change. We can see, hear, smell, taste, touch, move our bodies. We eat food, and our bodies take what is needed and gets rid of the rest,” Dixon explains. You can start with a daily journal about what they love about their outward appearance — whether it’s their brown eyes, long eyelashes, curly hair, bright smile — and then move to their inner qualities. The more they express what they value about themselves, the more well-rounded their attitude will become — and the more motivated they'll be to keep that beautiful body as healthy as it can be.
