How Not to Tell Your Boss You're Pregnant

$

0

By Lisa Abramson,

Congrats! You’re going to have a baby! Maybe you're over the moon about your upcoming arrival and already daydreaming about baby names and nursery decor. But if you’re like the many moms-to-be I coach, you’re also a little nervous about the road ahead and what it might mean for your career.

For one thing, you might be wondering how your pregnancy will be perceived by your coworkers. Whether you’re the first pregnant person in your workplace or the 10th, it can be tricky to navigate telling your employer you’re expecting.

More: Hostile Work Environment? How to Know Whether It's Your Job or the Company

Your first conversation with your boss about your pregnancy and maternity leave is an important opportunity to set the tone for how parenting will have an impact on your career.

Set yourself up for success in this initial conversation by avoiding these six pitfalls.

1. Framing your pregnancy as bad news or a problem

Sometimes we mistakenly think that motherhood will make us appear less focused professionally, but statistically, the opposite is true. A recent study by Matthias Krapf, Heinrich W. Ursprung and Christian Zimmermann even found that "mothers of at least two children are, on average more productive than mothers of only one child, and mothers in general are more productive than childless women.” Becoming a mom can make you even more productive than you ever thought possible — probably because you value your time away from home more than ever before.

So never apologize for being pregnant — and don't frame your news as an inconvenience for others.

2. Waiting so long, it’s really obvious

That bump is big! Waiting too long to tell work ends up being awkward for everyone involved (especially if they're bad at acting), so do yourself a favor and tell your boss before your bump is a basketball.

More: Stress Hits Women Harder — Here's How to Minimize Its Effects

3. Spilling the news in a group setting

Tell your boss in private. I repeat, tell your boss in private. Don't casually drop the news in front of everyone at a work party when explaining why you're not drinking.

4. Telling your boss through a coworker

If you want your boss to respect you, you need to respect your boss. She needs to be the first to know you’re expecting so she can plan and be prepared for your maternity leave. While you might want to tell your office friends you’re expecting, hold off until you’ve talked to your boss.

5. Talking about how you plan to quit after maternity leave

As Sheryl Sandberg says, “don’t leave before you leave.” Even if you think you might want to leave the workforce after your baby is born, it’s impossible to know how you’ll feel until your child actually arrives. Give yourself space and permission to make this big decision after your baby is born and you've had a chance to adjust to the demands of motherhood. You never know; you might welcome the “break” of going back to work. At least there, you’ll be able to drink your coffee in peace.

6. Sharing during a stressful time or a negative performance review

Of course, you can’t completely orchestrate the perfect time to tell your boss you’re pregnant. But you can try to schedule the conversation for an unfraught moment. So, if the quarter is about to close and everyone is rushing to meet their numbers, maybe wait until after that final push.

Chip & Joanna Gaines Are Expecting Their 5th Child

Chip and Joanna Gaines' family is about to get a little bigger. The Fixer Upper stars shared the exciting news in an adorable Instagram post on Tuesday night. Chip donned a fake baby bump for the occasion and posted a photo of himself (looking somewhat perplexed) as he and Joanna each placed a hand on his stomach.

"Gaines party of 7.. (If you’re still confused.. WE ARE PREGNANT)," Chip captioned the post. We weren't confused (also, you're not pregnant, Chip), but still, awww.

Meanwhile, Joanna's actual baby bump is visible underneath her gray hoodie in the photo. She posted an ultrasound video to Instagram on Wednesday morning along with the teaser that Chip "swears he can already tell it’s a boy."

Baby Gaines will have two older brothers, Drake and Duke, and two big sisters, Ella and Emmie Kay. The couple's children range in age from 7 to 12. And based on what Joanna shared in a June interview with People, the kids will be over the moon about the newest addition to the family. “I would love another baby — or twins!” Joanna told the outlet. “The kids are always asking me, ‘Mom, can you have another baby?'"

She also shared that Emmie Kay, the youngest of the brood at age 7, was initially on the fence about a new sibling — a totally understandable stance since being the baby of the family often has some serious perks. But when Emmie changed her tune, Joanna saw it as a sign that the time had come for a new addition to the family.

More: Chip & Joanna Gaines Respond to Pregnancy Rumors

This isn't the only major life change that's afoot for the Gaines family. In September, Chip and Joanna announced that the fifth season of Fixer Upper, which is currently airing on HGTV, will be its last. "Chip and Jo’s decision to leave Fixer Upper is truly just based on wanting to catch their breath for a minute; to rest, refresh, and spend even more time with their family and growing businesses," the couple's rep said at the time.

Although we'll certainly miss Chip and Joanna on Fixer Upper, their decision to leave the show to devote more time to their ever-growing family certainly makes a whole lot of sense. Let the Baby Gaines name hypotheses begin!

What's the Difference Between Broth & Stock?

$
0
0

Broth. Stock. The store sells both, but with seemingly the same ingredients, and it's honestly kind of hard to tell what the difference is. It leads to a lot of questions: Are you missing out if you use the wrong one? Are you going to ruin a delicate recipe if you choose one over the other?

Well, we're here to change all that. Broth and stock have a lot in common, the most important thing being that they're way better when you make them from scratch. Aside from that, there are just a few basic differences that make them suitable for different things — read on to find out what exactly they are and when to use them.

More: How to make bone broth and 4 delicious uses for it (VIDEO)

Broth

Broth simply refers to a liquid that meat has been cooked in. It often also contains bones, vegetables, seasonings and aromatics. Vegetable broth and bean broth also fall under this category even though they don't contain meat.

When to use it

Broth is already seasoned; so only use it in recipes when you know the flavor profile will work. Broth made with chicken is great for light soups, risotto and other rice dishes and white sauces; beef broth is a great base for heartier stews and tomato-based sauces; and pork broth is delicious with ramen noodles and veggies.

Stock

Stock is made by boiling bones, sometimes with fresh aromatic veggies (though classically, just the bones) to make a rich liquid. Bone broth? Yeah, it's basically just a modern marketing campaign for stock. The collagen, gelatin and flavors in the bones give stock a richer mouthfeel than broth — good stock will turn to jelly when you refrigerate it. Classically, stock is unseasoned.

More: Literally everything you ever wanted to know about bone broth

When to use it

Since stock is unseasoned, it's a great base for a lot of dishes. Cook meat and veggies in your stock and add seasoning, and you have a soup; reduce stock and add salt, butter and wine for a rich sauce; add flour, butter and salt to make gravy. Since it's unseasoned, stock is more versatile than broth — you can change its flavor profile by adding other ingredients.

To easily made stock, save your leftover bones from meals in a bag in the freezer, then boil up a big batch of stock when the bag is full. You can roast the bones first to give them more flavor. Freeze the stock in an ice cube tray and then use a cube or two when a recipe calls for it.

More: Bone broth in the slow cooker... yes, it's really that easy (VIDEO)

What about store-bought broth and stock? Well, the store-bought kinds tend to be pretty interchangeable. But in general, stocks tend to be richer and more fully flavored, while broths are a little thinner. Either way, you'll want to give them a boost at home — try simmering some carrots, celery and onion in either before you use it in any of your meals so they pick up some of that homemade goodness. And always opt for the low-sodium products so you can control the salt level on your own.

Hoda Kotb's New Today Show Salary Will Annoy You to No End

It's been a whirlwind kind of week for Hoda Kotb and the rest of the Today show team. If you'll recall, it was announced earlier on in the first week of January 2018 that Kotb would be taking over Matt Lauer's spot next to Savannah Guthrie during the first hour of the Today show. This was certainly exciting news, not only because the teaming of Kotb and Guthrie would be the first time two female co-anchors have co-hosted the Today show news hour, but also because Kotb (a seasoned journalist) was a worthy successor in the wake of Lauer's serious fall from grace.

More: Matt Lauer's Replacement Has Been Named, & Yes, It's a Familiar Face

Now, it seems like that happiness is short-lived because on Wednesday, the entire world learned just how much Kotb would make in her new role versus her predecessor. According to Page Six, Kotb will only make $7 million a year on the Today show per the new contract she has worked up with her employers. By itself, that's an astonishing amount of money. However, when you learn that at the time Lauer was shown the door at NBC, he was making $25 million a year, you might go from astonished to irked really quickly.

While Lauer did admittedly occupy that Today show co-anchor chair for the better part of two decades seniority could be a factor here, it's frankly unacceptable that Kotb's salary comes nowhere within spitting distance of Lauer's exorbitant salary. As one Twitter user pointed out on Wednesday afternoon, if you do the math, Kotb is making 28% of Lauer's old salary. 28. Per. Cent.

To add insult to injury, Page Six went on to report Guthrie's salary as well and the following math-based facts will only make you angrier and angrier. Guthrie, according to Bustle, makes the same as Kotb: $7 million a year. Together, these two women (who are breaking a major glass ceiling on the Today show, mind you) barely make half of what Lauer did on his own. What a bunch of malarkey.

One source told Page Six that this really isn't a big deal because Lauer has seniority, hence the bigger payday. "Hoda isn’t complaining about the money. She has landed the big job she always dreamed of, and most definitely deserves. Plus, Matt’s salary reflected the long time he was on the show — 25 years. If things go well, Hoda could ask for more next time if she re-ups her contract. But the figures underline the huge wage disparity at NBC News."

Kotb vs. Lauer Salary Tweet 2

Kotb vs. Lauer Salary Tweet 2

Oh, she's can "re-up" if things go well? How cute.

I (and I think I speak for women everywhere when I say this) doth protest against this nonsense. Kotb is pro in her field. She has a Daytime Emmy for her work on the Today show. She is a correspondent on Dateline NBC. She's been working as a reporter and anchor since the early '90s and, despite the fluffy 10 o'clock hour she co-hosts with Kathy Lee Gifford, is also experienced in covering tough topics. Kotb is no rookie and if the bulk of the argument about this egregious pay gap is about seniority and, implicitly, reporting experience, then Kotb matches Lauer pound for pound; she just hasn't had the kind of visibility Lauer has enjoyed over the years. Big woop.

More: Katie Couric Reveals Her Feelings on the Matt Lauer Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Kotb's current and only comments on the matter were given to People, where she did confirm that she's "not making Matt Lauer money." Well, she softens the comment by saying she chooses jobs based on what they're like, versus what they pay, so this is about doing what she loves, but yeah, the writing is on the wall about the inequality here.

Kotb vs. Lauer Salary Tweet 3

Kotb vs. Lauer Salary Tweet 3

"I think the whole money thing for me, I’ve always been sort of — I know it sounds ridiculous that I’m going to say this, but I really have done jobs I liked for the job I liked because I never wanted to be happy every other Friday on pay day. Like, I didn’t want that to be the happy day. I wanted to feel good throughout. So no, I’m not making Matt Lauer money. Not even close," she said.

All I know is, this pay gap is insulting to Kotb (and Guthrie!) and a bad look for Today show. Hopefully, this mess gets fixed before either woman decides to "re-up" their contract.

Brooklyn Decker Shares First Photo (& Adorable Name) of Newborn Daughter

Things can get just a little chaotic at home when you're taking care of a newborn baby, a 2-year-old and two unwell bulldogs. But Brooklyn Decker is taking everything in stride and maintaining her sense of humor in the process.

Decker, who recently welcomed her second child with husband Andy Roddick, posted an Instagram photo on Wednesday morning that gave us a first glimpse of the little bundle of joy. "A newborn, a toddler, a dog in a cone, a dog with a tumor but I’m having a good hair day so it’s fine we’re fine I’m fine," Decker captioned the post. She is indeed having a good hair day, and the aforementioned "dog in a cone" can be seen in the background.

As reported by People, the baby girl's name is Stevie. In October, Decker told Us Weekly that she and Roddick had chosen a family name for the newest addition to their family, but they have yet to confirm the identity of little Stevie's namesake.

Stevie joins big brother Hank, who Decker not-so-secretly hopes will marry Luna Legend, the daughter of her close friend Chrissy Teigen. The toddlers already enjoy playdates (awww), and if this arranged marriage doesn't work out, it looks like Decker may have another shot at matchmaking with her pal's offspring. Teigen, with the help of Luna, announced her own pregnancy in November.

It's a couple of decades too early to determine whether Decker's and Teigen's children will in fact turn out to be a match made in heaven, but at least we can count on some adorable Instagram photos of playdates in the near future.

6 Winter Skin Care Tips for Your Little Ones

$
0
0

When winter hits, we need to keep our kids' skin protected just as much as our own — and that takes a little more work than just layering them up whenever we leave the house (after all, you'll have to unwrap them eventually). Plus, plenty of kids have specific skin issues like eczema that may require more attention and care when it's cold out. "During the winter months, outside elements and cooler temperatures are especially rough on young skin and can aggravate skin conditions such as eczema flare-ups, diaper rash and ‘dribble rash’ for teething babies," says dermatologist Dr. Rachel Pritzker.

These expert tips will help you keep your little one's skin soft and healthy — even during tundraworthy weather.

More: 10 Kids' Coats That Are Cute & Cozy

1. Look for fragrance-free products

"Fragrance-free” on product labels — specifically laundry detergent and moisturizers — is key. New Jersey allergist and immunologist Tina Zecca recommends avoiding preservatives too. Preservative ingredients such as formaldehyde and propylene glycol can trigger skin allergies, she warns.

2. Don't over-bathe

For kids and adults alike, if we bathe too frequently, our skin can dry out — and this can disrupt the skin barrier and let allergens in. Bear in mind that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends bathing babies no more than three times a week for the first year. With older kids, note that hot, long showers can dry out skin by removing protective natural skin or oils, says board-certified dermatologist and pediatrician Tsippora Shainhouse. Keep your bath and shower water warm, not hot (a maximum temperature of 110 degrees Fahrenheit for anyone) and limit the duration to less than 10 minutes. "Use a moisturizing soap — try Dove Sensitive Skin or a glycerin bar — and only wash the 'dirty' areas — neck, feet, armpits, upper back, groin/diaper area — if the rest are clean," she adds.

More: 13 Essential Products for a Germaphobe Mom

3. Moisturize well

After bathing your child, pat them dry with a towel and apply a moisturizing lotion or cream within the first three minutes of getting out of the water to help the skin retain some of the water from the shower and prevent extra drying. If your child doesn't like the sensation of a thick cream, Shainhouse suggests using a lighter hydrating lotion, such as Cetaphil eczema care lotion, which contains skin-repairing ceramides. She also recommends applying a thick moisturizer, such as Aveeno ointment, to exposed areas of a child's skin, like the nose, cheeks, wrists and hands, before going outdoors. "Ingredients like oatmeal and glycerin will attract water to the skin, while occlusive ingredients like dimethicone and petroleum will hold and seal the water in," she says.

4. Don't forget sunscreen

Even when it's cold, UV rays are present; they pass through clouds and reflect off snow. Shainhouse recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or more to exposed skin on a child's face every morning before heading outdoors. "This is especially important if you and your kids will be playing outside for prolonged periods or if you are skiing [or] snowboarding," she adds. "Higher altitudes mean you are closer to the sun and more likely to sunburn. Remember to apply a coat of sunscreen before heading out to the slopes and reapply after lunch."

5. Treat compromised skin with extra TLC

If your child has eczema, don't autopilot to your local pharmacy for a common moisturizer when it flares. "Some OTC moisturizers can do more harm than good for compromised skin," warns Zecca. "OTC products with a high pH or potentially allergenic ingredients can actually irritate skin and make it itchier." Instead, ask your doctor about prescription barrier-repair products like EpiCeram, which has free fatty acids and other essential lipids in the right ratio to repair the lower layers of the skin and a controlled release to penetrate deep into the skin over time. Its pH also mimics the skin's natural pH, so it won't burn or irritate.

Pritzker urges parents to avoid using excessive amounts of soap — and of course avoid bathing eczema-prone skin daily. She recommends using WaterWipes instead, "to remove any visible dirt instead of a full bath... The irony of eczema is that you do not want to over-wash it, but occasionally remove dirt and oils."

And finally, "due to the drier air during the winter, kids with eczema or a propensity for dry skin should be using a cream-based moisturizer at least once a day," says board-certified dermatologist Ted Lain. "If the rash does not improve, I would highly recommend seeking care from a dermatologist. Treating these conditions in their mild to moderate stages is much easier than trying to control them when flaring badly."

More: 18 Brand-New Baby & Kid Products to Get Psyched About

6. Use a humidifier

Electric heat can be very drying to indoor air, which can in turn cause itchy, dry skin and even a dry throat and nosebleeds. Shainhouse suggests using a humidifier in the bedroom through the night to add moisture to the air. If your child is prone to nosebleeds due to dryness, apply a thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor inside their nose before bedtime.

Follow these tips, and your tot's skin won't suffer — even when the weather outside is, well, weather. Take that, winter.

The book is loosely based on the podcast Serial in that it's about a true-crime podcast that reopens a case that was long believed to be solved. For those who didn't listen to Serial (stop reading and download it now, please), it was about the case of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in the early '90s. The podcast examined some seriously large holes in the evidence used to convict him, and after Serial wrapped, Syed was granted a new trial.

I Was Professionally Ghosted (Yes, That's a Thing)

By Joelle Zarcone

Imagine you’ve met someone new. You’ve become pretty friendly, gotten to know the person relatively well and started texting or calling one another regularly. You've begun to build a relationship with one another and develop a rapport. You feel like everything’s going really well and maybe this could lead to something great in the near future.

Until suddenly…………… nothing.

Radio silence.

Your regular communications with this person who you thought was so special are suddenly nonexistent. You’ve been completely shut out, and the person isn’t answering your emails or texts. You’re being ignored on all fronts.

More: How to Handle a Job Interview Like a Man

Raise your hand if that sounds familiar. Uh, yeah, me too. And probably for most of us.

That very awkward situation is commonly known as ghosting and is usually reserved for interactions with an individual you’ve been dating. Luckily for us, it can also occur with potential employers! In other words, you can be professionally ghosted. Because applying for a new job doesn’t feel enough like diving into a black hole as it is.

Ghosting adds a whole new layer of stress to the job search, which I know from experience. Around the start of the new year, I was looking to make a career change to a different industry and began putting out feelers and applying for roles that sounded interesting. Through the power of networking, I ended up connecting with a recruiter at a particular company whose brand I really identified with and was passionate about and felt had a mission statement that resonated with my own.

I was beyond excited given my genuine respect and admiration for the company combined with the fact that the recruiter seemed equally enthusiastic about the idea of me working for them in the near future.

We exchanged multiple emails. I sent her my résumé. We chatted on the telephone. She connected me with other individuals in the company who were in my area to discuss potential partnerships and collaborations. This recruiter even told me she had written my name in her notebook of future hires and was going to reach out when she saw some soon-to-be-available positions open up that she imagined me being the perfect fit for.

More: 5 Things You Should Do (ASAP) if You're Worried You're About to Get Fired

And then without warning, the recruiter suddenly stopped communicating with me. Stopped emailing me and stopped responding to any messages from me. Like a failed date, I went through all the emotions:

Was it me?

Did I say something wrong?

Was I suddenly less talented or experienced than I thought?

Did something change to make me less desirable as a type of future employee such a company might want on their team?

And this happened to me far more times than my ego would care to admit with other recruiters at different companies.

But what I’ve come to learn after chatting with individuals in recruitment and hiring is that it’s not me. And it’s likely not you! Sometimes a company’s situation or hiring needs change, and sometimes the recruiter isn’t in a position to tell you that — or plain ol’ doesn’t want to — whether that’s because of a jam-packed schedule or due to lack of knowing how to handle a potentially awkward farewell.

All we can do is try not to take it personally. It’s not personal — it’s business. And sometimes that includes rejection.

More:  Discrimination in the Workplace Happens — Here's How to Spot It

So, don’t let professional ghosting discourage you. Speaking with recruiters or other individuals at companies you’re enthusiastic about is still a solid way to get name recognition and help facilitate an eventual career change. Stay true to yourself and seek to make sincere professional connections, and if someone stops answering your email… move on. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

How to Spot the Signs of Hypothermia & Treat It

$
0
0

With so many parts of the U.S. far colder than normal, it's a good time for a refresher on hypothermia. When do you go from just feeling really cold to being in danger? Is hypothermia preventable? And if it does set in, how do you treat it?

Here's a quick guide for making it through this winter.

What is hypothermia?

When you step outside a warm building, that icy blast of air can be a shock to the system. No matter how much you bundle up, chances are at least part of you will be cold, but when does feeling chilly stop and hypothermia begin?

More: This Is Why Your Nose Runs When It's Cold

According to the Mayo Clinic, hypothermia happens when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, resulting in a dangerously low body temperature — falling below 95 degrees F (several degrees lower than our average normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees F). It typically happens because of exposure to cold weather and cold water. Windy weather is also a factor in getting hypothermia because it removes body heat by carrying away the thin layer of warm air at the surface of your skin, the Mayo Clinic notes.

Even though 95 degrees F sounds pretty balmy, it's not a high enough temperature for your body to operate properly. When it dips below that point, your heart, nervous system and other organs aren't able to function normally. And if you don't treat hypothermia, it can eventually shut down your heart and respiratory system and eventually lead to death.

What are the symptoms of hypothermia?

If you're so cold your body starts shivering, that's not a good sign. Shivering is your body's way of trying to warm itself by creating some movement, so if that happens, take action right away. It's also important to know these symptoms usually come on gradually, which can make them harder to spot.

MoreHow to Tell If You Have a Common Cold or a Full-Blown Case of the Flu

Per the Mayo Clinic, signs and symptoms of hypothermia include:

How do you treat hypothermia?

If you think you or someone else has hypothermia, don't hesitate to call 911. In the meantime, try to move to a warmer location if possible, but slowly and carefully, as sudden movements could cause additional damage to the heart. Also, remove any wet clothes and replace them with dry ones to help start the recovery process.

Who is most at risk for hypothermia?

Anyone who steps outside in cold weather could potentially get hypothermia, but a few groups are particularly at risk for getting it. Older people and young children/babies are significantly affected by the cold, so make sure they are inside and warm. Also, people using drugs or alcohol (and some prescription medications) may also be affected, as substance use can make you feel warmer than you really are, causing hypothermia to set in. Likewise, certain medical conditions like hypothyroidism, poor nutrition or anorexia nervosa, diabetes, stroke, severe arthritis, Parkinson's disease, trauma and spinal cord injuries can impact the way your body regulates its temperature.

How do you prevent hypothermia?

To help avoid hypothermia, the Mayo Clinic offers COLD advice: cover, overexertion, layers and dry.

  • Cover. Protect your body from the frigid temperatures — especially your head, face and neck. Also, mittens are more effective at keeping your hands warm than gloves.
  • Overexertion. It may be tempting to move around a lot if you're outside, but try to avoid activities that make you sweat. Remember, the purpose of sweat is to cool your body down, and that's the opposite of what you want in cold weather.
  • Layers. Wear loose-fitting, layered, lightweight clothing with outer layers of tightly woven, water-repellent material. Wool, silk and polypropylene fabrics work best for wearing as inner layers because they hold heat better than cotton.
  • Dry. Moisture accelerates hypothermia, so try to stay dry and remove wet clothing as quickly as possible.

The bottom line: When the temperatures dip down, try to stay inside as much as possible and check on elderly neighbors or anyone else who might need some extra help.

Queen Elizabeth II Talks About One of Her Most Life-Changing Days in a New Doc

It's been 65 years since Queen Elizabeth II took Britain's royal throne. Sixty. Five. Years. I can't remember what I ate for lunch yesterday, but after 65 years, Elizabeth still remembers that historic day when she assumed the crown at age 25.

More: Queen Elizabeth Made the Most of Her Title by Buying a McDonald's

For the 65th anniversary, BBC One and the Royal Collection Trust will debut a documentary series about Elizabeth, starting with "Coronation," a one-hour episode during which she'll share some of her most personal memories from the day she became queen. According to Entertainment Tonight, the episode will include "both private and official film footage of the ceremony as well as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, in 1937."

According to the BBC, Elizabeth will appear during the series for some pretty unprecedented interviews.

"I've seen one coronation and been the recipient in the other, which is pretty remarkable," Elizabeth says on-screen.

In addition to interviews with the queen herself, the documentary will include eyewitness accounts from some of the people who were there, including a maid of honor who almost fainted during the ceremony and a choirboy who was 12 years old at the time and had to unexpectedly sing a solo when the rest of the choir was too overcome with emotion to finish a song. If that doesn't give you some insight into how beloved the queen is, nothing will.

Millions watched when Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 5, 1953. Now, millions more will have the opportunity to see and hear about what it was like to actually be there on that historic day. You can bet we'll be watching every second of this series.

Miracles Do Happen: In-N-Out Has a Surprising New Menu Item

In-N-Out has a cult following that will happily go out of their way to get their animal-style double-double — but they do so knowing everything will always be pretty much the same as it was a decade before and will be a decade later.

in-n-out

in-n-out

Until now. The incredibly popular fast-food chain has added a new menu item, and while it’s not the veggie burger everyone has long coveted, it is a pretty sweet reward.

More: Red velvet hot chocolate you can make right in your slow cooker

If you are enjoying your burger and fries on a chilly night, you can now score a hot cocoa to wash it down. In-N-Out is now serving 8-ounce cups of hot cocoa at their restaurants in California, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Nevada and Oregon.

More: Oreo Is Amping Things Up for the Holidays With This Tasty New Flavor

The hot cocoa, which sells for $1.60, is made with Ghirardelli Chocolate cocoa and hot water and is topped off with a packet of mini marshmallows. You can also order the marshmallows on the side, which means it’s almost like there are two menu changes at once.

Interestingly, this isn’t even truly a new menu item (we thought so!) — but rather the return of an old favorite. Company president Lynsi Snyder told The Orange County Register hot cocoa had a spot on the menu way back in the 1950s. "This is actually the return of hot cocoa," she said. "My grandparents, Harry and Esther Snyder, served it for many years beginning in the '50s. I'm not sure how it fell off the menu but it's part of our culture and something special for kids, and I'm happy that we're bringing it back."

Welcome back, hot cocoa. We’re excited to see you. Though you’d be even better with a few dessert options…

Jennifer Hudson Reveals the Humiliating Discrimination She Faced on a Plane

Jennifer Hudson‘s résumé includes an Oscar, performing at a presidential inauguration and dozens of radio hits. Yet some people still disregard her success and reduce her to negative racial stereotypes. In an interview with Cosmopolitan U.K., she opened up about facing stereotypes such as being asked to move from first class as a wealthy black woman.

More: Jennifer Hudson Called Off Her Engagement & Filed for a Protective Order

Hudson revealed that when she boards an airplane, she is frequently asked if she belongs "in the back of the plane" instead of in first class, where she typically sits. "There have been several situations where I get on a plane and [the air steward] assumes that I’m [meant to be] in the back of the plane," Hudson said. "That happens a lot. I’m like 'No, my seat is up there [in first class], thank you.'"

She also admitted she faces prejudice at home when people assume her house is owned by her white driver instead of her.

"People also assume that my home belongs to my white driver, Charles," Hudson said. "One time, I was having something moved into my house and they wanted to know where to put it. I said, 'There.' [The mover] just stood there. When Charles came in, he asked him, 'So where would you like these things?' Charles said, 'She said she wanted it right there. You’re talking to the wrong person.'"

Hudson speculated the discrimination happens because it is a foreign idea to some that a black woman can live in a wealthy neighborhood and be a working mom.

"Stuff like this happens in your own home!" Hudson said. "I defy all the odds being African American, living in a wealthy neighborhood and being a working mom. It’s too many foreign things in one person! It’s so ignorant. Race is just one of them. I face them all."

We hope everyone who has discriminated against Hudson reads her interview and knows she isn’t going to be stereotyped without repercussions and clapping back.

"Benji hasn’t gone through what Cameron has physically, but he always lets her know this is their struggle and they’re in it together," the source revealed. "He would do anything for her.”

Ryan Reynolds Weighs in on Twitter Debate Over Hot Men in Hollywood

There's a question the internet has been grappling with for about as long as anyone can remember. No one seems to be able to answer it: Which Chris is the hottest Chris?

More: Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds Are Still "Feuding" on Instagram

This refers, of course, to Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt and Chris Evans. They are the hottest trio of Chrises ever to grace Hollywood, but no one can figure out which Chris is the top Chris, the hottest of all the hot Chrises.

If anyone knows a thing or two about hotness, though, it's Ryan Reynolds. So it makes sense to pose this question to him — maybe he holds the answers we all seek but have, as yet, been unable to find. So, when a Twitter user went to Reynolds with the query, the internet held its collective breath in anticipation. Surely Reynolds would know. Finally, we would have the answer we have longed for.

"When ordering ice cream, I like to get all three scoops," was his cryptic nonanswer. Ugh. Leave it to Reynolds to be diplomatic about this.

He did say one other thing, though.

How to Break the 7 Worst Beauty Habits

$

0

Although we’re not fans of rigid beauty rules — like the one that says we can only wear vampy lipstick in the fall — there are certain guidelines we should prioritize for the sake of healthier skin. Sure, there are “bad” habits that are actually acceptable, like not washing your hair every other day, but others leave a little less wiggle room.

We're skipping the biggies like biting your nails or using dirty makeup brushes and focusing on a host of under-the-radar habits you probably didn’t know were ruining your skin. With the help of a few experts, we’re here to help you kick them once and for all.

Smoking

OK, so we’re starting with an obvious one, but seriously; no other habit, regardless of how often you do it, causes worse damage. Plus, we could always use a reminder. According to Dr. Craig Kraffert, board-certified dermatologist and president of Amarte Skin Care, vaping is the easiest way to curb your nicotine habit and eventually quit altogether.

“[Smoking] provides zero beauty benefit — only damage,” he says. “Vaping is not as damaging to the skin as smoking and there is not a great deal of data yet to quantify the relative level of damage that occurs with vaping vs. smoking.”

Not using primer

If you’re a makeup wearer and find that your face is always melting off by lunch, it could be because you’re not properly prepping your skin beforehand. According to Megan Luman, senior Mehron educator and celebrity makeup artist, one of the biggest mistakes she sees both men and women make is not hydrating before they apply foundation and other powder/cream products.

“Most people don’t understand the importance of a primer because no one has ever educated them on it. The skin is the largest organ of your body — therefore, it needs water!,” she says. “So anything you put on your face that contains water, i.e., liquid/cream foundation, you can count on your skin drinking it up.”

Luman recommends using a silicone-based primer, like Mehron’s Velvet Finish Primer, as it better controls oil, fills in lines and even helps products blend more easily. “Silicone is a larger molecule that our skin cannot absorb, so it creates a barrier between the skin and the makeup. So essentially, the two never actually touch.”

Using makeup wipes as a cleanser

If you’re constantly on the go or simply too tired to remove your makeup before bed, know that a makeup wipe isn’t where your cleansing routine should end. In fact, they actually leave residue on the skin and leave it dirtier than it was before. According to Kraffert, a lot of them also contain potentially hazardous chemicals, such as formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, that ensure a long shelf life, but ultimately dry out the skin.

“In Korea, makeup wipes are falling out of favor due to a general sense that they are not the best option for skin health and beauty,” he says. “I would recommend using a proper cleanser, such as Amarte Daily Wonder Cleansing Foam, for a deep cleanse without residual dryness or tightness.”

Assuming makeup with SPF is enough

You’re off to a great start if your makeup products include some level of UV protection, but the downside is that we forget to shield the rest of our body. According to Kraffert, “Although SPF is certainly an added benefit to makeup products such as foundations, the makeup isn’t applied thick[ly] enough and evenly enough in most cases… to key beauty zones — neck, décolleté, hands and arms — to be considered enough protection from the sun’s harmful rays.”

The solution is simple: Invest in a body SPF, like the Amarte Ultra Veil Sunscreen.

Sleeping on your side

Ever wonder why celebrities like Kim Kardashian swear by sleeping on their backs? According to Dr. Jame Heskett, consultant for the antiaging brand HydroPeptide, having your face against a pillow, especially if it’s not silk or satin, actually speeds up the formation of lines and wrinkles.

She says, “Practice just relaxing on the back when you’re awake. Once the body makes the connection between relaxation and body position, it will be easier to fall asleep in that position. If you can’t always sleep on your back, at least combat wrinkles with a powerful antiaging cream, like HydroPeptide’s Nimni Cream, so everything bounces back in the morning.”

Exfoliating every day

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a beauty junkie without his or her trusty facial-cleansing brush, which makes it easy to go overboard with exfoliation. Heskett says when we do this every or even every other day, it throws our skin’s natural bacteria balance out of whack. This, in turn, leads to random breakouts and other pesky skin issues.

“The skin has a natural balance of good bacteria and oils that keep your skin healthy, glowing and youthful,” she says. “When you exfoliate too much, you run the risk of creating an imbalance in the skin, which can lead to redness, dryness and breakouts. Then, more products get thrown at the problem, which starts the vicious cycle all over.”

Instead, keep your exfoliation to one day a week, and if you really want to curb this bad habit, consider shaving. “I know this sounds crazy, but the best exfoliation I’ve found is shaving,” says Heskett. “With a regular razor and shaving cream, shaving your face will remove dead skin cells like expensive spa treatments. And no, you won’t grow a beard.” (LOL, thanks.)

More: Do All-Natural Skin Care Routines Actually Work?

Cleansing with hot water

At the end of a long day, nothing feels better than a steamy shower. Unfortunately, it’s kind of a nightmare for your skin. According to most dermatologists, including Kraffert, hot water “damages skin’s protective barrier and causes engorgement of tiny blood vessels, which may lead to permanently dilated skin blood vessels over time and result in skin ruddiness and uneven tone.”

In fact, avoiding hot water is gospel in what we consider the skin care capital: Korea. So get into the habit of washing your face outside the shower and with a gentle exfoliant instead. “Washcloth exfoliation is hard to control and often misses the mark by creating too much exfoliation with irritation or not enough with suboptimal results,” says Kraffert. “Instead, I would recommend frequently exfoliating with Amarte Daily ExfoliPowder, a plant seed-based polishing cleanser that removes dry, dull skin.”

Great expert tips, right? There’s no time like the present to kick bad-for-you habits and replace them with routines that’ll keep you glowy, healthy and happy.

Khloé Kardashian's Baby Boy Name Is Shockingly Traditional

For fans who are keeping up with Khloé Kardashian's pregnancy, she just dropped some major news. During a stop on The Ellen DeGeneres Show — her first since officially announcing her pregnancy via a very sexy Instagram post costarring her boyfriend Tristan Thompson — she revealed she already has a name picked out for the baby. And unlike her family's penchant for unusual baby names, she's going super-traditional.

In a clip shared by Us Weekly, Kardashian opened up to DeGeneres about her pregnancy. She explained she's been very uncomfortable in her first trimester — before getting to the topic everyone was waiting for, namely names. When asked about what she plans to name her baby, Kardashian was, as always, happy to share.

"I think if it’s a boy I’ll go with Junior — Tristan Jr.," she said on the show. "Then for a girl, I don’t know where to begin." Baby name book publishers: Prepare for a major shift — and a spike in the popularity of old-school naming conventions.

That choice may be surprising coming from someone who is named Khloé and who is aunt to kiddos with names like North, Saint, Dream and Reign. However, fans shouldn't be surprised the Kardashian sister is bucking the tradition of, well, bucking tradition. None of her sisters kept that K trend going anyway, right?

Kardashian is already six months along; back in September, Us confirmed she's having a boy. But since she's apparently also thinking about what to name a daughter, is there surprise news in store? Is she already thinking about having a second baby?

Something Kardashian's not really thinking about? That would be marriage. Taking things one step at a time, she's focusing on her baby, not an over-the-top wedding. What a wise Kardashian, this one.

"We’re not in any rush for that. As you know, I’ve rushed quite a few things before," Kardashian told DeGeneres. "Right now, I’m so loving the place I’m in and very happy with how things are going. We talk about it for sure. What’s meant to be will be."

John Krasinski Is in Total Awe of His Wife, Emily Blunt, & It's So Sweet

Everyone is a little bit in love with Jim Halpert John Krasinski. You just have to be. One look at his adorable, boyish face is all it takes. It's over. You're at least a little bit in love, maybe even fully head over heels.

More: Emily Blunt & John Krasinski Finally Spill Their Baby News

And Krasinski just keeps finding new ways to make us fall in love with him. On one hand, it's kind of cruel that he's married and therefore inaccessible to all of us; on the other, his absolute devotion to Emily Blunt will make you melt. As part of a new interview about Emily Blunt for Vanity Fair, Krasinski was able to weigh in on her talents. At one point, he describes how he had never heard her sing until she got her role in 2014's Into the Woods.

"I had literally never heard her sing a note," he explained of his wife of, at the time, four years. "I thought that was such a cool gig, but, to be honest, I was really nervous for her."

More: Celebrities Who Need to Star in a Movie Together

He added that he assumed he and Blunt were "at the same level of singing talent, which is low mediocre."

Then, he stopped by one of the recording sessions for Into the Woods, and let slip to director Rob Marshall that he had never heard Blunt sing. As he recalls the story, he says Marshall was stunned.

"His mouth was wide open. He did not say anything. He just turned to the window, cued the song, the orchestra started playing, and Emily started singing, and I just immediately wept," Krasinski said. "It was really wild. It was like finding out that your wife can levitate," he added. "It was just like, 'When were you going to tell me this?'"

Yep. He cried because of his wife's hidden talent. Hello, perfect man. And here we thought we couldn't be more in love with Krasinski, and he goes and says things like that as well as this: "The air changes in the room when she starts doing what she does," he told Vanity Fair. "It’s so honest and so pure and so powerful. It’s like a superpower that she can just unlock and do so specifically with not many attempts. For me, I love acting, and I’m so lucky to be doing it. But she’s on another plane. This weird intersection happened while filming where I totally forgot I was her husband. I was just watching her performance and was lucky enough to be in the front row."

Well, if there's a Sweetest Husband in All the Land award, I think Krasinski might have just won it with that adorable sentiment.
