Community preview: Britta vs. Sadie Hawkins

Britta makes Greendale history by being the first woman to protest against the Sadie Hawkins dance.

Britta protests against Sadie Hawkins

When Britta is playing group therapist she's usually causing some trouble. On the upcoming "Herstory of Dance," Britta stirs up commotion when she plans a dance for the same time Greendale will be having their Sadie Hawkins dance. She calls it the "Sophie B. Hawkins" dance. But what does this women's lib fanatic have against Sadie Hawkins? It seems like it'd be her style. The girls have all the power!

Missed last week's episode? Here's the recap!>>

Unfortunately for the girl always prepared for a protest, she has confused Sophie B. Hawkins with Susan B. Anthony. Who knows what she's thinking since Sophie is a pop singer and Susan is a historical civil rights leader. The two couldn't be more different, but it's Britta so we'll let it slide. Inspired by Susan, she decides to make her own mark on history. But her efforts are definitely in vain since the Sadie Hawkins dance is already about equality and women's rights. There's not much to protest there, Britta. Will she make up a ridiculous reason for her protest to save face?

James Brolin dishes on being Papa Winger >>

My predictions: Jeff will somehow publicly humiliate her, Abed will recite the history of the Sadie Hawkins dance in a robotic tone, Dean Pelton will wave his wrists around and say, "No no no," at least once when he finds out about Britta's dance and Troy will be confused.

Chipotle egg salad sliders

A spicy kick of chipotle with cool cilantro and avocado give a Mexican flair to a standard egg salad. Serve it in a slider bun for a fun twist!

Chipotle Egg Salad Sliders

Egg salad is pretty standard on Easter afternoon, after all the eggs have been found , and we're all left with a giant bowl of hard-boiled eggs. Serve it up on a slider bun with a smoky, spicy, kick of chipotle, and it's brand new. It's no longer reminiscent of your Grandma's egg salad!

Chipotle egg salad sliders

Yields 12

Ingredients:

  • 1 small chipotle pepper in adobo
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and chopped
  • 1 large avocado, sliced
  • 12 slider buns , split

Directions:

  1. Mince the chipotle pepper until it's almost a paste-like consistency. Using the smallest amount of pepper will allow you to increase the heat later. It's much more difficult to reduce the heat if it's too high.
  2. In a bowl whisk together the chipotle pepper, sour cream, cilantro, lime juice, salt and pepper. Gently fold in the chopped eggs .
  3. Spoon the egg salad into the slider buns, top with a slice of avocado. Serve immediately or chill until ready to serve.

Where Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes' romance began

They play on-screen love interests, but when did Ryan Gosling start romancing Eva Mendes in real life? Here’s a romantic rewind of Ryan and Eva's relationship.

When Eva Mendes was cast in her latest movie A Place Beyond the Pines, she got lucky. Not only is it a great role with an amazing cast, but it also brought her closer with Ryan Gosling.

Although the two had met briefly before filming, they spent weeks together while filming Pines in Schenectady, New York, two summers ago. Ryan and Eva play love interests in the movie who have a child together . If you thought Ryan couldn't get any more dreamy, just wait until you see him cuddling a baby on the big screen!

It wasn't long before Eva and Ryan were spotted spending quality time together off-camera. One of their very first public dates together was when they hit up Disneyland in Anaheim, California, back in September 2011. Then, the couple took a Thanksgiving trip to Paris and strolled the catacombs together. Eva even met Ryan's mom back in January 2012 and attended her college graduation with Ryan in June, so it looks like they're serious.

Despite the fact that their movie hits theaters Friday, the twosome has been careful to keep a low profile, even while promoting the film. During the NYC junket for Pines, Eva and Ryan did a very limited number of interviews separately, and left the hotel separately afterwards to avoid being photographed together. And during a recent interview, Eva has said she wants paparazzi protection for her and Ryan's dogs!

So while we may not see a ton of PDA pics of them in public, you can watch them together on the big screen in A Place Beyond the Pines, which hits theaters March 29.

How I Met Your Mother taps Happy Endings

No. She's probably not our mother.

How I Met Your Mother taps Happy Endings for guestsHow I Met Your Mother is planning to wrap up Season 8 with some happy endings. Or, at least one of the Happy Endings crew.

As part of a small pool of guests being pulled on-board for the final few episodes of their next-to-last season, How I Met Your Mother showrunners have tapped the funny and gorgeous Casey Wilson to drop by for an appearance on the show.

Why we love How I Met Your Mother's Season 8>>

Fans are dying to know if she'll be the mother we've waited eight seasons to meet. However, at the moment, Vulture is reporting that Wilson will just be around to play a fellow diner during one of Robin and Barney's dates. Another interesting tidbit, Wilson's dinner date that night will be Keegan-Michael Key, from Comedy Central's Key and Peele.

That's not to say she couldn't possibly be the mother. Throughout the series, we've seen glimpses of the mother in question. Ted has continually brushed past her, stood beside her and dated her roommate. It's entirely possible that Barney and Robin's run-in with Wilson at the diner will lead to something further down the road. For some reason, though, we always thought she'd be blond. Possibly because Ted Mosby seems to have a thing for the light-haired ladies of New York.

Another fun fact: Our featured image recently appeared on the CBS site. Is it possible at least one more intervention is in store for the HIMYM gang? We hope so. Network execs recently announced that the upcoming ninth season of How I Met Your Mother would, indeed, be its last. For a show that has always been about reaching the end, the last few episodes have continued to seem even more geared toward that final push to next season's series finale. It seems only fair to have one more intervention. Those are always legen — wait for it — dary!

The gang finds a Robin Sparkles documentary>>

Meanwhile, Wilson's show Happy Endings is set to return on March 29 after being off the schedule since January. There hasn't been any word of a renewal for Happy Endings yet.

To find out if Ted's happy ending will involve Wilson, we'll just have to wait and see!

The Game of Thrones game of drink!

The only way to survive this Game is to have an iron stomach.

Game of Thrones drinking game

The Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens and all their friends and enemies are back and we are so excited! The only thing that could possibly make Game of Thrones even more fun is to watch it while drinking with a gang of friends. We've put together a bit of a drinking game to help kick off the season with a bang . But, feel free to use this for any episode! Beer or wine would work well with a GoT theme, but for a little more fun, try a Dragon's Breath shot from our sister site, DrinksMixer.

Dragon's Breath

5 oz Firewater Cinnamon Schnapps
5 oz Bacardi 151 rum

Eep! We hope you can survive a fire like Khaleesi!

And now, for the rules:

This drinking game requires some friends and a little bit of playing favorites. It's time to split into teams/families. There are a million families in Game of Thrones. For the sake of everyone's sanity, we've picked the three favorites to help you split into teams. So, pick a family, any family, and follow these rules:

StarksGame of Thrones drinking game

Take a shot anytime...

  • Someone hero worships at Ned Stark
  • Sansa acts innocent and naive
  • Arya hates on "normal/most girls"
  • Robb Stark changes his mind
  • Catelyn vows to fight for her children, but ends up making things worse
  • Arya chants her list of people she wants dead

Need more reasons to drink? There's also a New Girl drinking game!>>

Lannisters

Get smashed by sipping each time...

  • Someone makes fun of Tyrion's height
  • Cersei quirks an eyebrow
  • Jaime and Cersei act incestuous
  • Tywin is an awful father
  • Joffrey sentences someone to death
  • Jaime insults Brienne

Targaryen

RAWR!

  • First sight of the dragons
  • Daenerys is referred to as Khaleesi
  • Sexual tension between Dany and Jorah Mormont is too much to bear
  • Dany reminds everyone she's the mother of dragons
  • The dragons bite on or breathe fire at Dany and she seems unfazed
  • Despite being the Khaleesi and proving herself so far, Dany still does something stupid or acts naive

Drink to the dead! A Walking Dead drinking game>>Game of Thrones drinking game

The Game couldn't exist without one more set of people to look after them. If you hold loyalty to no family and are a truly brave soul, there's another "team" for you.

Night's Watch

Feeling peckish, Crow? Buck up and take a shot anytime any of the above activities happen during Game of Thrones. And, anytime...

  • Poor John is referred to as "the Bastard"
  • Sam says he's scared/frightened/afraid

Have fun and game responsibly, friends. And remember to check back soon for cool family-themed printables to help designate your drinks of choice. Whoever has the least amount of drinks left over by the end of the show is the winner of Game of Drinks!

In a pickle: What to do with overcooked veggies

$
0
0
It can be hard to tell when vegetables are fully cooked. If you overcook them — as we all have or will at least once in our lives — don't throw them out! Instead, learn what you can do with overcooked veggies.

Broccoli au gratin

There are many different ways to cook vegetables. You can grill, steam, boil, bake, fry, roast or even microwave them. All of these methods produce delicious, crisp veggies — unless, of course, you overcook them. Overcooking veggies is more common than you think, since you can't quite tell for sure when they're done. Let's get a lesson in veggies — including what to do with the ones you overcooked!

Veggie cooking 101

It doesn't necessarily matter how you cook your veggies , as long as you're eating them! Boiling them is one of the most common ways, but you have to be careful because if you overcook them you lose a lot of nutrients in the water. Steaming is a great way to cook your veggies since there's no chance of losing any nutrients, plus it's fast and convenient. If flavor is what you're after, saute them in a little bit of olive oil. This method is perfect for crispy, nutritious, full-flavored veggies that you can eat plain or season with your favorite seasoning blend.

Did you know? The best way to cook veggies is actually to microwave them! Since little water is used, they won't lose any nutrients, and it's almost impossible to burn them.

How to tell if veggies are done

Unlike meat, where the middle is no longer pink, veggies don't change color when done. Setting a timer is always recommended, but depending on the thickness of your veggies, they may need more or less time. A good rule of thumb for knowing when they're done is poking them with a fork. If the fork goes in easily and the veggie almost falls off, they're done. If you need to force the fork in, give them more time. Check every 1-2 minutes once they're close to being done.

What to do with overcooked veggies

Since it can be tough to tell when veggies are done, it's pretty easy to overcook them. You get an unexpected phone call or the baby starts crying, and the next thing you know your veggies have turned to mush. Instead of throwing them out, try these tips:

  • Immediately put the veggies in ice water. This stops the cooking process and firms them back up a bit.
  • Make soup. Since soup is made of overcooked veggies, don't hesitate to change dinner up a bit by turning your vegetables into a delicious, homemade vegetable soup.
  • Make a warm salad. Place the veggies in a bowl and cover with your favorite vinaigrette.
  • Make baby food. If you have a little one, puree the veggies in a blender, place in plastic containers and freeze. Click here for step-by-step instructions.
  • Cut into tiny pieces and add to rice. Since the vegetables will be cut up in small pieces, you won't be able to taste that they're burned. If you burned spicy veggies — like peppers, onions and jalapeños — make Mexican rice!
  • Go au gratin if you overcooked potatoes or broccoli. Add cheese, heavy whipping cream and garlic .

Tell us

Have you ever overcooked veggies? What did you do with them? Share in the comments below!

SheKnows flirts with The Host hottie Stephen Rider

Actor Stephen Rider has already made a film with Denzel Washington and now stars in The Host, based on author Stephenie Meyer’s smash novel. This up-and-coming star shares exclusive behind-the-scenes details with SheKnows, including the secret behind those freaky-blue eyes.

Stephen Rider

Stephen Rider proved his talent in the action film Safe House, where he played a CIA analyst and acted alongside Denzel Washington.

Now Stephen plays Seeker Reed, an alien "Soul" in a human body, opposite German actress Diane Kruger in The Host. Find out what Rider thinks this story is really about.

SheKnows: The story in "The Host" plays on so many different levels. What do you think the story is really about?

Stephen Rider: I really think it comes down to being accepting of all things. That in the end — regardless of how different/alien we may seem to be because of economics, religious/political affiliations, one's ethnicity — only love matters.

SK: As an actor, what was it like playing an alien in a human body?

SR: At first, it was really weird and uncomfortable to play an alien. Mainly because I had all these lofty ideas of what I thought an alien should be. But once director Andrew Niccol and I started to get to the root of why they were here, it seemed to get to the core of why humans exist — that we all are asking the same questions about life, like "What is this all about?’"And from that place, I realized that we are all searching for the truth.

SK: Can you tell us how they made all the "souls"' eyes so freaky-cool looking?

SR: We all had to wear contacts. And although they looked cool, they were so uncomfortable to wear. Because I'm already blind and wear contacts, I had to put on those freaky yet sexy contacts on top of the ones I was wearing. My eyes were taking a beating. Luckily, we had this amazing eye technician named Bob Smithson who was always there to make sure you were cool. I always needed some eye drops. A brother's eyes were dry!! LOL!

SK: Did you get to keep the contacts?

SR: Unfortunately, they made us all give them back. They would have been a great Halloween accessory, though.

SK: You were super hot in your white suit — what was the stylistic idea behind putting all the seekers in tailored, ivory suits?

SR: Andrew Niccol had spoken to Stephenie Meyer about the suits before principal shooting. In the book, they all wore black, but Andrew thought it would be best to wear a white suit since we're pure in spirit.

SK: Interesting! How was it working with the lovely German actress, Diane Kruger?

SR: I loved working with Diane! She's so professional and feisty, just a real down to earth person. We really bonded and I only wish the best for her in life. Would love to work with her again.

SK: How do you pronounce Saoirse's name?

SR: It's SIR-sha.

SK: Thank you! What was she like?

SR: Saorise is an incredible actor! I learned so much from working with both her and Diane. And she's so endearing and beautiful. She's one of the sweetest people I've ever met. Both her mother Monica and father Paul are both great people. It only makes sense that she would be.

SK: We loved you in Safe House, what other projects can we look forward to seeing you in?

Movie review: Safe House >>

SR: Thank you. Safe House was so fun and intense. I have an independent movie called Event 15 coming out sometime this year starring Jennifer Morrison from Once Upon A Time. I'm also in The Butler coming out toward the end of the year, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. The Butler is going to be one you want to follow.

SK: Will do, Stephen — looking forward to seeing it!

The Butler is a biopic about the life of Eugene Allen who was the White House's head butler to eight U.S. presidents from the 1950s to the 1980s. Stephen Rider plays Admiral Rochon and the film is scheduled for release Oct. 18, 2013. SheKnows can’t wait!

Jennifer Lawrence says she is "like a Chihuahua" in public

Jennifer Lawrence still doesn't feel comfortable with her celebrity and said there is a reason she never reads anything she says.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence emerged on the A-List scene very quickly and it doesn’t look like she has quite gotten used to it yet. While the actress offers a refreshing change from those who have been in Hollywood for a long time, she still finds red carpets pretty scary.

Jennifer Lawrence is white hot in Catching Fire poster

"I'm afraid I'm going to go my whole life being scared like a Chihuahua," she told the U.K.'s Fabulous magazine. "It's not my comfort zone. Making movies is where I belong. I shouldn't be heard just talking. So, when I'm doing movies, I'm really happy. That's where I'm comfortable, that's my home. When you put me on a red carpet or on a stage, I turn into Chihuahua Jennifer."

Lawrence enjoys her job so much because she said the only time she really feels comfortable is when she is playing someone else. But when she does have to be herself, she is apparently quite the talker.

"I have no control over what comes out of my mouth," she said, according to Us Weekly. "I would probably turn into a mute if I read what I said."

What do the stars' Oscars styles reveal about their personalities? >>

Even though Lawrence is now considered one of the best, and most sought after, actresses in Hollywood, one of her top priorities is to stay who she is.

"Definitely my family is not the kind of family that would ever let me turn into an a--hole or anything like that, so I am fortunate to have them," she told the magazine.

It looks like so far, so good. The 22-year-old doesn’t feel like she has yet been changed by the success.

"I don't ever walk around feeling famous, I walk around feeling the exact same way I have walked around my entire life, but it's not until I talk to somebody and see in their eyes that I'm different. It makes me feel weird," she said, according to Us Weekly. "A lot of things that I didn't even think could ever be possible for me have happened, all in a year. It's been overwhelming, but in a wonderful way."

Jennifer Lawrence goes dark >>

Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook in February and will next be seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and X-Men: Days of Futures Past.

Game of Thrones returns for Season 3!

Game of Thrones season 3 premiere preview

It's been a long, cold fall and winter. But, spring is here and with it comes the Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere!

When we last visited the game, Tyrion had just helped King's Landing secure itself against Stannis Baratheon's attack and taken an ugly gash to the face. Arya had escaped Lord Tywin's gates and was on her way to seek revenge. Catelyn had freed Jaime Lannister and her son was treating her like a traitor because of it. Jon had been taken captive by the Wildlings and Sam had a terrifying encounter with the White Walkers.

Game of Thrones drinking game>>

Now? It's been weeks since Stannis was forced to retreat and everyone's lives are in a state of upheaval.

Despite Tyrion's heroic efforts, his father has sent him off to smaller, well-hidden quarters . Will he ever earn his way into his father's graces? And, barring that, will he ever at least be allowed a quiet, happy life somewhere where he can't be tormented and dragged into the middle of Jaime and Cersei's games?

The Stark sisters are on rocky ground, too. Most of the realm isn't even positive that the tomboy Arya is alive. And, despite her desire to return home, she's tempted to the learn the ways of her friend Jaqen, who helped her escape from Harrenhal. Meanwhile, there's a new queen-to-be at King's Landing and Sansa is in desperate need of an escape before she becomes nothing more than a "toy" for Joffrey when he's bored with his pretty new love. Will she find a way out?

Catch up before the Season 3 premiere>>

What of the rest of the players in the Game of Thrones? You'll just have to watch to find out . If you're not yet excited about the return of the game, make sure to check out the big preview Jimmy Kimmel premiered last month!

The X Factor has nailed down another judge. Despite two of them flying the coop, Demi Lovato is here to stay. It's been announced that she'll be back for another season of the singing competition.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is sticking with The X Factor. The singer and actress has confirmed that she'll be back for Season 3. Unlike former judges Britney Spears and L.A. Reid, Lovato is returning to the judges table.

Stick a fork in him: L.A. Reid's out at The X Factor>>

She released an official statement , formally announcing her decision.

"I am so excited to return as a judge and mentor on The X Factor. Last season was an unbelievable experience and I really enjoyed developing personal relationships with the contestants and the panel. I look forward to taking my previous experience and applying it to make this season even better!"

Britney Spears is done with The X Factor>>

Talk about a change of heart. Last month, it sounded as if Lovato was unsure about the show. In Cosmo on Campus she revealed, "I don't think I was ready when I started on The X Factor. In an ideal situation, I would have maybe waited a year or more [after coming out of treatment]."

Demi Lovato says she signed on for The X Factor too soon>>

She also stated that she had "no idea" whether or not she'd be back for Season 3. Fast forward to today, and we have a definite answer. It's one that co-judge and producer Simon Cowell is thrilled to hear.

"I couldn't be happier that Demi wants to come back this year," he said in a press release. "She's a superstar in her own right and was a fantastic mentor last year. Even though she can be really, really annoying -- I truly enjoyed working with her and so did the artists. I'm especially pleased she's back, even during her world tour!"

Open auditions for the new season of The X Factor begin next month.

Mariah Carey's no-makeup photo is a thing of fresh-faced beauty. Check out the birthday girl's stripped-down look shared on Instagram!

Mariah Carey no makeup

Mariah Carey's makeup-free face has fans of the singer all jazzed up. On the same day the mother of twins Monroe and Moroccan blew out a cake loaded with 43 candles, she posted the photo seen here to Instagram.

Check out that fresh face and beautiful grin! Along with the image, the birthday girl wrote to fans, "Love to all the lambily!!!"

Though she didn't say so specifically, it's being reported this is a look at Mariah Carey with no makeup on at all — not something we usually associate with the singer's notorious diva ways.

A Mariah Carey b-day celebration: Steamiest pics through the years>>

Contrary to popular belief, it seems Mariah Carey really does settle down after a long day of work just like the rest of us -— with a freshly-washed face and pajama pants, of course!

Nick Cannon previously told In Touch of his wife's at-home look versus when she's done up for a show, "She doesn't ever wear that much makeup on TV — it's all about the hair for her. But at home, she's always just chillin' with no makeup and her hair tied up. I mean, you just can't be dolled up 24/7. Besides, she's my wife, she really doesn't need to be dolled up for me.''

Was there an ulterior motive to Mariah Carey's no-makeup photo, though?

It seems Mrs Cannon could have been trying to keep up with her Idol nemesis, whose majorly toned-down look on Elle magazine's cover had plenty of people talking. Your move now, Ms Minaj!

Matt Lauer apologizes to a former TODAY Show intern

Matt Lauer continues to feel the heat from critics as a former intern tweets that The TODAY Show anchor was "not so nice" during his time at the morning show.

MattLauerapologizes

It's tough to be Matt Lauer these days. The TODAY Show anchor is suffering from the fallout of Ann Curry's dismissal last year in addition to falling ratings and rumors of his replacement.

Well, it just took a turn for the worse when a former TODAY Show intern going back to 1997 was quoted by a coworker on Twitter about the anchor's demeanor on set.

Darren Sweeney, a Fox executive producer in Cleveland, Ohio, quoted Mark Zinni, the former intern, about his time at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The duo had an earlier discussion about the anchorman's time at the famed morning show.

Sweeney quoted Zinni as saying, "I was just a young kid with a bright future ahead of me," and he added that Lauer was "not so nice." Lauer's Twitter handle was included in the initial tweet.

Zinni retweeted his friend's post and it created a bit of a frenzy when his journalist pals joined in the online discussion.

The Cleveland-based anchor clarified the story to a follower later in the day, saying, "I was an intern there in '97, his first year on the job… how do I say this…? He was… not nice."

Matt Lauer slammed for Jerry Sandusky interview>>

1997 was the first year Lauer was promoted to the host position, replacing longtime newsman Bryant Gumble. Prior to that, Lauer had been a newsreader on the morning show.

Well, guess who caught wind of the Twitter discussion? Yes, Lauer joined the fray and wrote back to Zinni on Thursday with, "huh? Always tried to be nice Mark. Sorry you didn't think so. Hope you're doing well. Matt."

The NBC newsman is clearly feeling the heat since he rarely uses his social media profile.

Is Matt Lauer headed to Jeopardy to replace Alex Trebek?>>

Zinni took the whole story a step further by writing a post on the Ohio station's website because the story started spinning out of control as it was picked up by several media outlets.

He wrote, "If you know me, you probably know that I don’t take myself too seriously. So, my answer was more of a joke about being young and naive during my time at Today, but I added that he wasn’t nice to me. I didn’t slam the guy, I just made an honest comment."

Zinni was surprised the nationally-known anchorman even remembered him. He said, "I'm flattered."

Somehow, we doubt Lauer is flattered by all of this unwanted attention, but it pays to be nice to the interns. You never know where they'll wind up later in their career.

Kim Kardashian calls out fat-shaming bullies on Tonight Show

You go, Kim Kardashian: The reality star strikes back at the negative attention her pregnant physique has gotten recently in a chatty appearance on The Tonight Show.

Kim Kardashian arrives for Good Morning America appearance

Call a pregnant woman fat? That makes you a big bully, said a right-on Kim Kardashian in a Thursday-night appearance on The Tonight Show.

"I think it's a little bully-ish to call a pregnant woman fat," she told Tonight Show host Jay Leno. "I mean, what do you expect? I hope I gain weight. I'm a little heavy."

Kardashian, who didn't look anywhere near the supposed 200 pounds InTouch Weekly said she weighed in an unflattering cover story, also said "I have the rest of my life to be skinny and to lose weight, and I'm not really worrying about it. If I have a craving, I'll go for it," she told Leno.

Kardashian also punctured the rumor that Kanye West's last name has inspired the couple to name the baby-to-be after compass directions, or that the preponderance of family "K" names would mean they're considering a little Kyle or Kate.

"We have a list," she said, "and some of them are 'K' names [and] some of them aren't."

Kim Kardashian: Pregnancy is hard!>>

North, widely rumored to be the name of choice, isn't on the list, she revealed. But she does like the name Easton.

"Easton West, I think that's cute," she said.

"Now, Easton would be a boy's name, correct?" asked Leno slyly.

"You never know," Kardashian returned, cagily.

Easton, a Scottish boy's name that means "East," has been rising on the baby name rankings kept by the Social Security Administration. Given that modern parents frequently choose a traditionally male moniker for baby girls , liking the name "Easton" doesn't necessarily mean Little Kimye is a boy.

Childbirth classes: Should you take one?

Pregnant and getting ready for birth? Childbirth education is an important part of preparation. But, it's not as simple as just signing up for a class. There are different methods that encompass different ways of looking at birth. Which one is right for you?
Childbirth class

Pregnant and getting ready for birth? Childbirth education is an important part of preparation. But, it's not as simple as just signing up for a class. There are different methods that encompass different ways of looking at birth.

Finding the right class

Whether you are looking for a technique that focuses on a partnership and breathing techniques, a method that prepares you for natural birthing or a method that taps into a woman's ability to visualize and distract her way through birth, there is a birth method for you. How important are childbirth classes?

Preparation is key

"I found that the people who took classes were much more prepared for childbirth," said childbirth educator Shari Criso, who used to have a midwifery practice. "Being prepared made the experience better for them... fear really causes more pain. The absence of knowledge causes more fear." Criso says that childbirth education classes demystify birthing, preparing moms for the unknown birth process.

There are many classes and methods available. The methods touch on different manners of letting go because labor is one of those times where you can't control it. "Labor is not about taking control, it's about letting go," said Criso.

Here are some of the most popular ones.

Lamaze Method

When you think of childbirth classes, Lamaze is probably the first you think of. The method, created by Dr. Fernand Lamaze in 1951, combines childbirth education, breathing techniques and constant emotional support from a partner.

"On average, Lamaze classes last on average about six weeks."

It's important to note that Lamaze, once known for the breathing, has expanded its focus to encompass more education focusing around pregnancy and childbirth. On average, Lamaze classes last on average about six weeks.

"As a leader in educating women about the mental and physical transitions they will undergo during pregnancy and postpartum, Lamaze International believes a series of childbirth education classes can be vital in preparing new moms," said Lamaze International President Allison J. Walsh, IBCLC, LCCE, FACCE. "Classes can empower women to have positive birth experiences and be informed about early parenthood challenges such as breastfeeding, handling fatigue and infant care."

Bradley Method

The Bradley Method teaches birth as a natural process where the mother focuses on relaxation. The Bradley Method is about being self-aware and knowing that the body can handle the process. Both the mother and a partner play important roles in this method.

"The Bradley method is about being self-aware and knowing that the body can handle the process."

According to BradleyBirth.com, more than 86 percent of moms who take Bradley classes go on to have a medication-free childbirth. It was developed in the 1940s by Dr. Robert Bradley and is a 12-week program.

"I learned really powerful relaxation methods that I still use to this day, over seven years later. I use them at the dentist, on turbulent airline flights, when my kids are insane and so on," says mom Danielle Wylie of FoodMomiac.com. "The focus on nutrition was amazing. Most doctors don't know a lot about pregnancy nutrition, but the Bradley Method places a huge focus on it. I learned to eat high levels of protein. I increased my veggie intake. Most memorably, I learned that if I HAVE to have chocolate, I should opt for a Snickers, because then I at least get the protein from the peanuts."

HypnoBirthing Method

Also known as the Mongan Method, HypnoBirthing is based on the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read who purported the idea of natural birthing in the 1920s, based on a centuries-old philosophy of birthing. Techniques used in HypnoBirthing include visualization, self-hypnosis and relaxation. Although it doesn't promise a pain-free birth, the technique does promote calmness and serenity in birthing.

"Techniques uses in HypnoBirthing include visualization, self-hypnosis and relaxation..."

Criso used HypnoBirthing with her children. "I really like hypnobirthing — I did it with my children," she said. "I just felt like it was the one method that focused on relaxation the most."

Coincidentally, the childbirth class that Criso developed with her husband, called Childbirth Without Fear, is based on Dick-Read's methodology. It begins with mental preparation for birth and continues with physical preparation. Taught by both a husband and wife, the class uniquely touches on both the father and mother's needs during birth. It's available at Criso's store, The Birth Boutique in Denville, New Jersey.

Return to Zombieland?

Zombieland topper

Sounds like everyone wants to get in on America's obsession with television. Our only surprise: That this hasn't happened sooner. What are we talking about?

Zombieland slayed box offices>>

Amazon.com now has its own studio and is set to release seven individually made comedy pilots. The pilots will be free for Amazon users to watch and the most popular will score a full series order. Once the show is made, it will be available on Amazon On Demand . Amazon's current efforts are focused on comedy and children's programming. Amazon studios are also requesting pitches for a "smart, character-driven series." From the sound of it, anyone can pitch an idea to them. If they like it, they'll hook you up with the funds necessary to make your pilot. Pretty awesome!

Zombieland poster

Quite a few of the pilots sound interesting, but the one that has everyone the most excited is from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the creative duo that brought us the movie Zombieland, with Woody Harrelson. They're back with their blockbuster concept and are turning the movie into a pilot which will hopefully end up becoming a full series available on Amazon.

Surviving a zombie apocalypse>>

Zombieland the series will pick up where the movie left off, following the four survivors on their quest to outwit the walking dead and find a place to survive. The cast has even been set. Tallahassee will be played by Kirk Ward, Maiara Walsh is cast as Wichita, Tyler Ross will take on the role of Columbus and Izabela Vidovic will play Little Rock.

Adding to the excitement, the guys released the first poster/promotional image for Zombieland earlier today. We'll be sure to let all you zombie fans know just as soon as the pilot is available on Amazon!
