The Benefits of Being Grateful Are Real — & Might Just Change Your Life

"An attitude of gratitude" may sound like some cornball saying, but you'd better believe it's a whole lot more. In fact, being grateful for what you have can change your worldview and your life — and it just might be the key to a totally happy, healthy existence. Practicing an attitude of gratitude can be a total game-changer, and we can prove it because... science.

Several scientific studies have shown how having a mindset of thankfulness can benefit you many times over. "Gratitude not only makes people feel good in the present, but it also increases the likelihood that people will function optimally and feel good in the future," explain the authors — Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough — of a study on gratitude and well-being, published by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

In the study, they had university students write down up to five things in their lives that they were grateful for once a week. In the results, the authors note, "Participants in the gratitude condition felt better about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic regarding their expectations for the upcoming week. They reported fewer physical complaints and reported spending significantly more time exercising."

As they suggest, being thankful can benefit your daily routine in numerous ways. Here are some of the things gratitude can do for you — all backed by science.

1. It activates you

Similar to the study above, other research from the journal Personality and Individual Differences also reports that grateful participants were more proactive about their health, more inclined to visit the doctor for regular checkups and tended to exercise more, according to Forbes magazine.

2. It helps you fight sickness

To piggyback on No. 1, being grateful not only makes you more aware of your health, but it also makes you healthier. Studies have noted grateful participants report fewer aches and pains and that they have better immune systems.

3. It relaxes you

Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being published an article in 2011 that analyzed thankfulness and sleep. They found that people who wrote down things they were thankful for before bed fell asleep faster and stayed asleep longer. It's also been found to relieve aggression and stress.

4. It fosters relationships

Having a mentality of gratefulness has been linked to an overall better social life. "Gratitude appears to build friendships and other social bonds," Emmons and McCullough explain in their report. It can also make you a better friend, partner and team player. Let your friends and loved ones know how grateful you are for them by creating a personalized #ThankList on social and tagging everyone you're thankful for.

5. It makes you smarter

In a study out of the Journal of Happiness Studies on high schoolers, gratitude and materialism, the authors note, "We found that gratitude, controlling for materialism, uniquely predicts all outcomes considered: higher grade point average, life satisfaction, social integration, and absorption, as well as lower envy and depression."

6. It boosts your career

Happier Human explains that gratitude can make you a more effective manager, aid in networking, increase goal achievement, improve decision-making and boost your productivity. Being thankful has been known to improve your personality overall — a key component in the corporate world.

7. It steadies your emotions

As noted earlier, gratitude studies show that it reduces feelings of aggression in participants, but it can also help you cope with traumatic events and has the tendency to make your memories happier.

8. It increases self-esteem

Forbes notes a study from the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology that found gratitude boosted self-esteem in athletes. Forbes also mentions other studies that show it reduces social comparisons and allows people to appreciate others' achievements as well as their own.

9. It makes you happier

The Huffington Post reports a study that showed gratitude made teens 17 percent happier and more hopeful. Many of the benefits of gratitude simply come from the fact that it makes you more optimistic — and optimism can make us happier and lengthen our life spans.

Queen Elizabeth Made the Most of Her Title by Buying a McDonald's

The McDonald's closest to me may treat me like a queen ("The usual 25 hash browns, my liege?"), but at the end of the day, I'm just another very hungry customer who's borderline addicted to fried potatoes.

Queen Elizabeth, though? She's used her crown and the money behind it to ensure that when it comes to her local McDonald's, she's the boss — literally.

More: The Queen Low-Key Side Hustles in Horse Racing

It turns out the British monarch (well, technically The Crown Estate) invested in a McDonald's about 80 miles outside London in 2015. And as you might expect for a restaurant owned by royalty, this location is fancy AF compared to the ones I frequent — it's got Wi-Fi, a phone-charging station, and table service, I guess in case the queen ever actually decides to visit.

Now, the queen has a pretty notoriously healthy diet (one that includes, like, four cocktails a day, which is totes my kind of healthy), so chances are she doesn't make it to the Banbury Gateway Shopping Park Mickey D's very often. But when you want to have a cheat day in private, what better way than to scoot out to the suburbs of London to indulge at a McDonald's that you own?

More: Goal: To Look Half as Good at 90 as Queen Elizabeth II Does

Sometimes I wonder what I'd do with the power that comes with the crown. Advocate for world peace? Try to end poverty? Invest heavily in getting girls more involved in STEM? But at the end of the day, I think I can safely say I'd take a page out of Queen Elizabeth's book... just swap McDonald's for Taco Bell and my reign would go down in history.

Will & Grace's Sean Hayes Opens Up About His Terrifying Health Scare

Two weeks ago, Sean Hayes had to skip a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and as we all know, you don't cancel on DeGeneres unless you have a good reason. Turns out, Hayes had a good reason: His small intestine burst.

Yes, he's fine now, and yes that's as gross as it sounds.

As Hayes tells DeGeneres, one night, he felt an excruciating pain in his stomach and went to the ER. That was a good move, because he found out that his small intestine burst open and was poisoning his body. To fix it, he tells DeGeneres that the doctors went in through his belly button and "clipped off the bad part and put it back together, you know, with, like, a chip clip," adding that now his potato chips are stale. (A small price to pay for an intact small intestine, though.)

hayes

The medical term for what happened to Hayes is gastrointestinal perforation, and it happens when a hole forms in your stomach, small intestine or large intestine. Symptoms include severe stomach pain, fever, vomiting, chills and nausea, and the condition requires immediate medical attention.

GP can happen in conjunction with other illnesses, including appendicitis, diverticulitis, bowel conditions, gallstones and stomach ulcers, among others. It can also happen as a result of blunt trauma to the abdomen (including a knife or gunshot wound) or abdominal surgery. Smoking and alcohol use increase chances of getting GP.

Hayes was in his usual energetic form when he did finally make his appearance on Ellen, and we're so happy his intestine is no longer poisoning his body from within and that's he's feeling better.

Corey Feldman has long been speaking out about the alleged abuse he endured at the hands of at least one powerful Hollywood individual when he was a child star. Now, on the heels of a string of accusations and takedowns of powerful people accused of sexual misconduct starting with Harvey Weinstein Feldman is once again working to make his voice heard.

In a nearly seven-minute video accompanying an Indiegogo campaign, Feldman explains that he wants to raise money to produce a documentary shedding light on pedophilia in the entertainment industry, something he says is still a pervasive problem.

"What I am proposing is a plan that can literally change the entertainment system as we know it," he says. "I believe that I can also bring down, potentially, a pedophile ring that I have been aware of since I was a child. Right off the bat, I can name six names, one of them who is still very powerful today. And a story that links all the way up to a studio. It connects pedophilia to one of the major studios."

Feldman has a fundraising goal of $10 million, and as of Thursday morning, he had raised nearly $100,000.

"I propose to do this by making a film that will be [the most] honest and true depiction of child abuse ever portrayed, by telling my own story in a very real way, in a very honest way, with no editing, no censorship, no studio behind it," he continues. "I will make the film, I will direct the film, I will produce the film, and I will self-distribute it to guarantee it gets a theatrical release with your donations. Additionally, it will help me buy the security and the legal team I need to protect my family."

Feldman adds, "Once it’s done, I believe we can revolutionize the film industry in a way that we can root out the evil and make it safe for our kids again. Not just the entertainment industry, the entire world, the entire planet can come together over this issue because our children are the most sacred things we have," he says.

This Graveyard Taco Dip Is Your New Fave Halloween Snack

Halloween is definitely all about the candy, but being that the jumbo bags of fun-size candy bars hit shelves in, oh, August, we're almost sick of them by the time Halloween night actually rolls around. Sacrilege, we know, but it's true — and we're willing to bet we're not the only ones out there who might need a little something savory to nibble on during the Oct. 31 festivities. Graveyard taco dip to the rescue.

This taco dip is super-easy to make, perfect for snacking on at a soiree and sure to be a new favorite of anyone who tries it. Because... tacos.

Spooky graveyard taco dip

Start off with an 8 x 8-inch casserole dish. Layer 1 can of refried beans at the bottom of the casserole dish, and spread with a spatula to smooth it. The next layer is the taco sauce. I like to use a medium spice level, but you can go with mild or hot. You can usually find taco sauce with Latin American foods in your grocery store. I found the taco sauce I used right by the salsas.

The third layer is a mixture of sour cream and taco seasoning. Mix the two together well, and then spread it evenly on top of the taco sauce layer. I used reduced-fat sour cream and couldn't tell the difference from the full-fat sour cream, but you can choose to use whichever you like best.

Spooky graveyard taco dip

Next goes on a little bit of freshly grated cheddar cheese. Just enough to cover the sour cream. Then it's time for some homemade guacamole. I mashed up an avocado, added some hot sauce and sprinkled on a little bit of salt and pepper. That simple, homemade guacamole goes evenly on top of the cheese.

Finally, it's time to cover the dip with plenty of salsa. I used medium salsa, but use whatever level of spice you like, mild or hot. As far as the dip part of this recipe, you are all done now.

It's just time to decorate and garnish a bit. The garnish is easy, just a few sliced-up green onions. The decorating is the fun part. You can decorate this dip with some homemade tortilla gravestones.

Spooky graveyard taco dip

Using a cutting board and a sharp knife, trace the shape of a gravestone into a large tortilla. Cut out the gravestone, and place it on a baking tray. You can cut out whatever shapes you want for your dip. I chose to do an assortment of gravestones by cutting out different shapes and sizes. Then I made an eerie-looking tree to go in the back of the dip.

To create the tree, use the same method as the gravestones — trace with a knife to cut it out. Once all the chips are cut out, spray them with nonstick cooking spray. Bake the chips in the oven, preheated to 350 degrees F, for 5 to 8 minutes, flipping them over once during the process.

Once the chips are cooked and cooled, you can decorate them by using a black edible marker to draw on them. Stick the chips into the dip, add some sliced green onions, and the dip is ready to be devoured.

Spooky graveyard taco dip and chips recipe

This taco dip is perfect to serve for a fun Halloween get-together or party. With several easy layers, this dip is taco-seasoned and bursting with fresh flavor. The graveyard chips are made from tortillas and take only minutes to make.

Yields 1 (8 x 8-inch) dish

Prep time: 32 minutes | Bake time: 5-8 minutes | Total time: 37-40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) can refried beans
  • 1 cup taco sauce
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 large avocado
  • 2-3 drops hot sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar salsa
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 2 large tortillas
  • Cooking spray
  • Other chips for serving
  • Black edible marker (optional)

Directions:

  1. Spread the can of refried beans evenly in an 8 x 8-inch casserole dish. Top with the taco sauce.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the sour cream and taco seasoning. Stir well, and then evenly top the taco sauce.
  3. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  4. In another small bowl, mash a ripe avocado with the hot sauce, salt and pepper. Mix until a guacamole consistency has formed, and then spread it over the cheese.
  5. Top with the salsa.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Cut out the tortillas to form gravestones or other spooky shapes.
  7. Lay the tortilla gravestones onto a tray, and then lightly spritz them with cooking spray. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes, flipping at the halfway point.
  8. Remove the chips from the oven, allow them to harden and cool, and then decorate them with an edible black marker, if desired.
  9. Insert the chips into the dip, and then garnish with sliced green onions.

Prince Harry is always on the go, traipsing around the world on his royal duties. But the prince can never resist a cute kid — and it's clearer all the time he's a natural papa in the making. Yes, we know. There's not even an official engagement yet (though rumors are swirling that he and Suits actor Meghan Markle are thiiiis close to announcing their nuptials). But we can't help but notice Prince Harry's got the royal touch when it comes to kids and speculate that he's going to make a great daddy someday.

Need proof? The official Kensington Palace Instagram and Twitter feeds are full of photos and videos of Harry being charmed to bits by little ones across the globe. Case in point: He's currently on a royal visit to Denmark, where he seemed delighted as ever to meet a sweet baby.

And, hey, what about this shot from September when Prince Harry was mixing and mingling with Invictus Games athletes and their babies in Toronto.

So what does the prince have to say on the topic of wanting kids someday? In 2016, he told People he hoped he was a "fun uncle" to Prince George and Princess Charlotte. He also told the magazine, "There have been moments through life, especially when we do a tour abroad, when I think, ‘I’d love to have kids now.’ ... And then there are other times when I bury my head in the sand going, ‘All right, don’t need kids!’ There’s no rush... There’s been times I’ve been put off having children.”

But don't you worry. The prince continued, "No, actually, I’ve got a couple of mates and being around their children just brings me back down.” Yup, kids keep Harry grounded — and he loves it. We're going on the record: Kids are just wild about Harry, and so are we.

The only thing spookier than real zombies is the thought of spending more than $5 on a blended coffee beverage, but year after year Starbucks comes out with a Halloween creation so amazing, we can't resist. Like a moth to a flame or a zombie to a brain, we flock en masse to the chain to get our Frappuccino fix.

This year, the drink in question is the Zombie Frappuccino, and it honestly looks pretty awesome. It's a crème-based caramel apple-flavored drink topped with pink whipped cream "brains" and a bloody-red mocha drizzle.

This isn't the first time Starbucks has gotten in on the Halloween action. Last year they were slinging the Frappula Créme Frappuccino, a white chocolate and strawberry concoction, and before that, they had the Franken Frappuccino. Needless to say, they seem pretty dedicated to giving us grown-ups our sugar fix, and it is a nice consolation prize considering it's apparently unseemly for an adult to go door-to-door begging for candy on Oct. 31 (or so my neighborhood watch claimed in their strongly worded letter, SMH).

The Zombie Frappuccino will be available Oct. 26 through 31, so get one while you can. Because really, there's nothing scarier than missing your opportunity to post an Insta of this season's flashiest drink.

Can’t Have an Orgasm? Here’s What You Need to Know About Anorgasmia

$
0
0

Our bodies aren’t always kind to us — from health risks to chronic illness to the inability to orgasm — it’s a complicated relationship that takes understanding, patience and healing.

Five to 10 percent of people with a cervix suffer from anorgasmia — the inability to orgasm — also known as Coughlan’s syndrome or FOD (female orgasm disorder). In heterosexual couples, 95 percent of men have an orgasm, while women have an orgasm 50 to 70 percent of the time. Much of this discrepancy lies within lack of information, communication and understanding — anorgasmia can occur even when those factors exist.

More: How I Overcame Sexual Dysfunction After Having a Baby

There are three different types of anorgasmia according to Mayo Clinic:

  1. Primary — meaning the individual cannot climax at all and never has been able to
  2. Secondary — the ability may come and go with no reason as to why
  3. Situational — depending on the partner and the situation

The disorder can be caused by childhood abuse, diabetes, medications, smoking and drinking. Moreover, stress, anxiety, fear of STIs and low self-esteem can also contribute to anorgasmia.

If you suffer from anorgasmia, which is more common than we think, there are a few steps you can take before giving up any hope of a successful, meaningful sex life. It’s also best to begin looking at alternatives and methods that can heal you earlier on before waiting an extended amount of time that results in further anxiety and stress.

Although anorgasmia can be difficult to treat, it’s important to look into the underlying issues that could be contributing to the disorder.

Think about your stressors or medication

Megan Ward told the Daily Mail she has never reached a sexual climax because of her diagnosed anxiety. She says, “I have never, not once, not by myself, not with a partner, not with a vibrator, had an orgasm.” For Ward, she gets close to a climax and then her brain shuts off all stimulation due to overwhelming anxiety.

While anorgasmia is a medical condition, it is typically caused by psychological, social and cultural concerns that are most suitable for therapy.

Moreover, prescription and over-the-counter medications can alter the body, and this includes the ability to orgasm. Contact your doctor if you have any concerns about the interference.

Masturbation practices

An important component to sex and a partnership is understanding your body by yourself first. “Directed masturbation” is a technique during which an individual with a cervix educates themselves on how to achieve an orgasm. By finding this knowledge, you can tell your partner during intercourse or foreplay. Trying different toys, erogenous zones (all four of them), and experimenting with pressure points alone can help you understand your body’s sensations and responses.

Trying different positions & pleasure points

Researchers recently discovered the “golden trio,” which includes 1) deep kissing 2) genital stimulation and 3) oral sex to accomplish the elusive orgasm.

Since 30 percent of men think “intercourse is the best way for women to have an orgasm,” some education is definitely necessary for all people involved. Experimenting with different pleasure points on the clitoris, incorporating penetration with clitoral stimulation or various new positions can possibly aid in unlocking an orgasm.

More: I Haven't Had Sex in 8 Years Because of Sexual Anorexia

Therapy

As stated above, anorgasmia is typically caused by a psychological factor, which should result in sex therapy for a full recovery. If you have a primary partner, visit the therapist with your partner in order to understand the full depth of anorgasmia and to ensure you are both educated. Couples are taught how sexual arousal works for people with a cervix, and the therapist discusses the differences in response cycles. This is important for all individuals involved as the giver and the receiver.

Your therapist may recommend a number of practices like sensate focus, Kegels and masturbation. Moreover, counseling will touch on emotional responses as a contributing factor to an orgasm or lack thereof.

Successful therapy and practice can greatly enhance an individual’s condition. Being diagnosed with anorgasmia is the first step — with primary vs. secondary coming next in the stage toward a solution. There is a success rate of 80 to 90 percent of primary anorgasmia being treated through therapy. Millions of individuals don’t need to give up their desire of achieving an orgasm — desire, solutions and well-being are just around the corner.

Admitting you cannot achieve an orgasm is the first step. Anorgasmia may seem alienating at first. Discovering a solution does not have to be a depressing or exhausting experience. Solutions exist, doctors are here to help, and you aren’t alone.

Emma Stone has a rumored new boyfriend who is seriously good looking and seriously a catch. So who's the (allegedly) lucky guy?

More: Our 10 New Favorite Characters to Dress Up as for Halloween

Page Six is reporting that Stone and Saturday Night Live's Dave McCary have made it official after quietly dating for the last few months. They reportedly met when Stone hosted SNL in December of last year and starred in a sketch McCary directed. They sparked dating rumors a few months ago when Stone hosted SNL's season premiere this year and they reunited. Reportedly, they've been together for around three months.

What's really important here, though, is that this guy is a real looker. Check him out:

It also sounds like he's a total sweetie, deserving of any Hollywood starlet. And a fellow SNL writer, Julio Torres, told Vulture McCary is "one of the most tender, beautiful hands when it comes to directing," so he's serious about his job too. Can you say catch?

This would be Stone's first real relationship since she split from Andrew Garfield, who she dated for years. Reports say she and Garfield split because it was too hard to balance their relationship with their increasingly busy schedules, but they remain on good terms.

"There was no drama, they’ve been apart while working. They still care about each other," a source told People when they broke up. "They still have love for one another. They are on good terms with each other and remain close."

What Causes Digestive Problems in Teens?

$

Anyone can suffer from digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. But if it's your teen we're talking about here, it adds a layer of difficulty — because really, what teenager wants to talk their parent about their intestines?

Below is everything you (may not have) ever wanted to know about some common digestive problems that could be plaguing your older child — plus their symptoms, causes and treatments.

The embarrassing symptoms of digestive issues

Abdominal problems can manifest in a variety of unpleasant ways at a number of spots along the digestive tract. For starters, let's look at some of the most common abdominal symptoms you (and your teen) should be on the lookout for.

  • Upset stomach
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Bowel movement color changes
  • Irritable bowels
  • Itching anus

And if that weren't uncomfortable — and awkward — enough, there are other non-abdominal symptoms that can be attributed to tummy troubles too. These include:

  • Headaches
  • Halitosis
  • Heartburn
  • Acid reflux
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain/weight loss
  • Irritability
  • Acne

Keep in mind, though, that simply shoving a bottle of Pepto toward your kid to treat the symptoms won't fix the underlying issue — and some belly troubles require further investigation to determine the root of the problem.

The causes of tummy troubles

Digestive symptoms and abdominal pain can spring up due to a wide variety of causes; here are some of the most common.

Food intolerances: An intolerance of a certain food or compound means your kid's body can't handle digesting that ingredient. Lactose intolerance means the culprit is lactose (a sugar found in dairy products); this intolerance can result in nausea, cramps, bloating and diarrhea if dairy is consumed.

Food allergies: While you may be familiar with food allergies that produce hives or itching, these can also affect the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms can include cramping, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Menstrual cycle: As if bleeding once a month weren't bad enough, many girls get the undelightful experience of "period poops" — aka diarrhea. It's all because of these little jerks called prostaglandins, which stimulate the smooth muscle of the uterus so it will contract and expel the lining. If you produce too many prostaglandins, they can sometimes enter the bloodstream and affect the (also lined with smooth muscle) bowels.

Medications: Even common over-the-counter pain meds such as ibuprofen can cause stomach pain.

Stress: A teen's life is often chock-full of stress. Unfortunately, this can adversely affect the gut. Stress-induced belly issues can cause nonspecific pain; even though it doesn't have a physical cause, this kind of pain is nonetheless very real.

Poor eating habits: If your teen's diet isn't all that stellar and they're not drinking enough fluids, fecal matter can build up, and it's not always easy to poop it out. Plus, constipation can cause a host of issues aside from plain-old not pooping: belly pain, hemorrhoids and fissures (small cracks in the anus that can bleed). Another factor can be lack of intestinal flora — the "good" bacteria we need to keep our digestive system running smoothly — the balance of which can be upset by a poor diet, stress or lack of sleep.

Embarrassment: Believe it or not, some teens simply don't want to poop at school because... well, because pooping at school. So they wait until they get home. And all that waiting can lead to constipation and even worse problems, such as impacted stool or even leakage (which is uncommon, thankfully, but is still a possibility).

Malabsorption: Certain conditions, such as celiac disease, can result in malabsorption, which in turn can lead to a whole wheelbarrow full of distressing gastric symptoms. Celiac disease means your child's immune system decides to attack the lining of their stomach and small intestine when gluten is ingested, which damages the villi and leads to malabsorption, pain, poor growth, bloating, constipation, weight loss and more.

How to feel better, stat

Fortunately, for many stomach ailments, the prescription is simple: a better diet, more fluids and exercise.

  • Eat a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, proteins and complex carbohydrates
  • Cut back on caffeine, sugary drinks and fast foods
  • Avoid alcohol, drugs and cigarette smoking
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Stay physically active
  • Reduce stress by learning good coping skills
  • Take a probiotic

But also: Schedule a checkup

Lifestyle changes won't always clear stomach issues up, however. Dr. Partha Nandi, physician and author of Ask Dr. Nandi, says there are a few signs to look for that warrant a deeper investigation. "Doctors suggest for parents to trust their instincts," he says. "If it's just a complaint that you can't really figure out… if you are worried, don't hesitate to call your pediatrician. You know your child best, and if you are concerned, then call."

He also says the following situations warrant further investigation by a physician:

  • Severe vomiting and diarrhea that seem to cause dehydration
  • Blood in vomit or diarrhea
  • Ongoing constipation or blood in the stool
  • Overly picking eating (this can be a red flag there is something wrong with the gut)
  • Abdominal pain that interferes with regular life or goes on for longer than expected
Your teen may be referred to a specialist if involuntary weight loss, excessive vomiting, unexplained fever, gastrointestinal bleeding or other severe symptoms are present.

Tummy troubles can be distressing, but with some thoughtful questioning and a doctor visit (if necessary), things can get moving again — and you and your teen can move on to less awkward conversation topics.

Paint Your Pumpkin Teal This Halloween to Keep Trick-or-Treaters Safe

Even if they're not fighting off vampires, ghouls and ghosts, Halloween poses a myriad of challenges for parents. But this year, the Teal Pumpkin Project is aiming to make things a little easier, at least for trick-or-treaters with a food allergy-sufferer in tow.

More: Dry Ice Is the Key to Taking Your Halloween Punch to Spooky New Heights

The plan? People who place a teal pumpkin outside their house are indicating they're handing out nonfood items this year. Parents will have a visual cue to identify which houses are safe for their kids to visit. With no candy present at all, there's no cross-contamination to worry about, and kids can still have the fun of trick-or-treating without having to put themselves in danger. Food Allergy Research and Education, which is spearheading the movement, suggests handing out things like glow sticks, stickers and small toys. You can also look at this map to find homes in your area that are participating.

More: The New Zombie Frappuccino From Starbucks Is Giving Us Chills

This is more effective than having families swear off handing out peanuts or keeping just a few nonfood items out along with the candy — for those whose allergies are really severe, the safest bet is to avoid homes handing out candy altogether. And hey, it gives you a chance to whip out your paintbrushes and get down with your artsy self rather than getting up to your elbows in pumpkin guts.

Considering the fact that more than 8 percent of kids in the U.S. suffer from food allergies, it seems like high time something like the Teal Pumpkin Project came along. Their goal is to have at least one house in every neighborhood with a teal pumpkin out front — this year, maybe it will be you.

Roark Luskin Actually Applauds Ryan Ulrich for Betraying Her on Survivor

Just moments after telling Jeff Probst she was confident in her position, Roark Luskin was voted off Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. What went wrong? We spoke with Roark to get the dirt, and she revealed why Ryan's decision to blindside her was actually the right thing to do. In fact, she would even vote for him to win because of it. She also explained how she was working behind the scenes to stir up paranoia with Joe. Finally, we asked her what she will be for Halloween, and we got an answer many of you may not expect.

SheKnows: How was it watching your surprise elimination play back on TV?

Roark Luskin: I'm good. That was a pretty honorable exit. I'm proud. I think they told the story accurately. I have absolutely no hard feelings. I'm an insanely competitive person. There's nothing I love more than games. I can respect when I've been bested in a game. I held it together in that moment, but I vividly remember crying after. I think if it doesn't hurt, you shouldn't be out there. As a fan, it meant a lot for me to be out there. We each get that little five-second blurb in the voting booth confessional, and Ryan, as a fellow superfan, said, "I know how much it means for you to be out here. You're awesome. I'm really sorry." He and I were superfans. We got it. It is what it is. Survivor has given us showdowns like Zeke and David. How often do you see really smart women who are ambitious and have this big, real-world life come out there and go for each other like me, Chrissy and Ali did? What an interesting, fun way to go. It was a great episode of television regardless of my own outcome.

SK: But you were definitely blindsided.

RL: For sure. I knew that Chrissy was gunning for me the second we swapped. I had been told that. If we had lost that first Immunity challenge, I would've been very prepared to see my name and go home. As days progressed, I felt that I had built enough of relationships with people after that. But Ali and I did not foresee the advantage between Chrissy and Ryan and the strength within that hidden bond.

SK: Why did she target you so strongly?

RL: One of the things that did not make the episode happened when we were laying around camp one day. She said to me, "You remind me so much of me." That actually came up in Tribal when we were going back and forth. She said she felt really out of place in the tribe, and I argued it was incredibly unfair when she compared herself to me. She definitely saw something in me. What you do hear on the show is her saying, "I think Roark is the No. 2 scariest person out here." She clearly recognized herself as a threat and recognized those threatening qualities embodied in another person. Instead of teaming up to become extra threatening, she said, "I must remove that of which is similar to me." That is a completely valid, logical choice on her part. I understand where Chrissy was coming from on all levels.

Image: CBS

SK: As you and Chrissy squared off at Tribal Council, did you ever start thinking that maybe the votes would fall against you or were you confident the whole time?

RL: I had believed the decoy boot was Ryan. As we're conversing with Jeff, all of the conversation was about me and Chrissy. I knew it wasn't good. Ryan's inability in challenges didn't come up. The fact he does nothing around camp didn't come up. The stuff I expected to come up that Jeff would want us to hash out wasn't coming up. That felt wrong. As soon as the first vote showed up for me I knew it was over. I didn't have to wait for the third because I knew I could excuse myself. But Ryan was the fake target. When you see Chrissy and I sitting on that log, she proposes voting out Ryan to me.

SK: Looking in from the outside like a viewer, do you think Ryan made the right decision to vote you out or was it a mistake for him to alienate Ali?

RL: I believe he did. I think Ryan feels that he has Chrissy. I think he felt like he lost Ali. My bond with Ali was really profound out there. I think he was like, "Roark is going to bring Ali to the Healers side. How does she see me fitting into that plan?" I think he saw Ali as leaving him for me. He knew he was No. 1 in Chrissy's book.

Soko tribe on Survivor: Heroes Vs. Healers Vs. Hustlers
Image: CBS

SK: What was your strategy going into the game?

RL: My strategy was to be flexible, to be a good listener and to build friendship bonds before game bonds. I never wanted to get too rigid about something. I think that's where things go wrong because you can't view things from all angles. When people are very paranoid, it gets annoying and old having to comfort them all the time. In the Healers tribe, I was often put in the comforting role for Dr. Mike and other people. That made me never have to comfort myself, which I became generally too comfortable. I never wanted to seem like I was playing from a place of fear. Another thing that sort of breaks my heart, if you look at our preseason interviews, Ryan and I wanted to work together really badly before we ever even spoke. This story has such a different ending if Ryan and I had a chance to start together. That type of thing makes me very sad. I wish I had that opportunity. I think a Roark and Ryan run would have been really fun.

SK: Is Ryan the person you wanted to go to the end with?

RL: No. Ryan and I could never sit at the end together because we're too similar. What actually was happening is that Desi was my ride-or-die. I would've been happy to sit at the end with her. I was open-minded about the third spot. She was not a superfan, by any stretch. Her strategy was to find somebody who knows the game and operate with them. She and I found each other and hit it off personally. She really trusted my judgment. That's exactly the person you want to be working with. I fully trusted her to be my sounding board. Any info we gathered from other people we would bring back to each other. I knew I could go to the end with her and win. I guess the third finalist makes it more complicated, but I had full faith in my ability to move forward with Desi.

SK: Of the remaining contestants, who do you think is most deserving to win at this point?

RL: For me, it's Ryan. He played Ali and I like a fiddle that day. Obviously, we've seen how he's rocking the pre-merge calling shots. If I had to pick today, I would give it to Ryan.

SK: So no bitter jury vibe from you. You would reward the guy who blindsided you because you respect his game?

RL: Yeah. Absolutely.

SK: Who doesn't deserve to win?

RL: As somebody who respects strategy over survival, I could never give it to J.P. He's a lovely guy, and he's a wonderful leader. You don't hear it on the show, but he was guiding us through the challengers with such leadership and authority. No shade at J.P., but he's my least likely pick.

Roark Luskin with canteen on Survivor: Heroes Vs. Healers Vs. Hustlers

SK: We didn't get to see too much of your game on TV, so what kinds of moves did you make to impact the game?

RL: I was really trying to convince Cole to throw a challenge with me. I knew going in six to a swap was a really bad idea. I was super-uncomfortable with that. I really wanted Cole to throw with me, but I couldn't quite convince him. If we had gone to Tribal first, it definitely would've been Dr. Mike [voted out] because Joe was so vocal in his concerns about him. As you survive longer and longer without going to Tribal as a group, the target can move. Dr. Mike became endearing, fun and lovable as time went on. I very much wanted to work with Mike, but as the target was swinging God forbid the bull's eye lands on me. Joe was still very paranoid about Mike's behavior whether it was Idol searching or fake Idol building. Anything we got with beads on it I was stealing and burying. I was using it to feed Joe's paranoia. He would be like, "The fake Idol is getting bigger. Mike's making a giant fake Idol." I was like, "Yes. Yes he is." I was doing a bunch of little stuff that doesn't have a story arc because nothing ever came from it.

SK: How did you get on the show?

RL: I literally just applied. I sent in a video online and got a call. It was a one-year journey. I applied out of cycle [when the show's not prepared to film,] and casting asked me to be in a good place to try again later. It all started up again last fall. Myself, Joe, Ali, Devon and Ryan all were at casting one year ago this week. That's where it all began. It was my first time applying. I just did it on a whim.

SK: Being a superfan, what's your favorite season?

RL: Panama [Exile Island.] You've got Cirie with the strategy. You've got the Shane and Courtney character amazingness. It has all the great stuff to me. You've got a challenge beast, a strategy beast and a social beast. It's a great season.

SK: Bonus question: What are you going to be for Halloween?

RL: Oh, God. I hate Halloween. I actively think it's an inappropriate adult holiday. Adults shouldn't celebrate Halloween, in my opinion. The only fun time I've ever had on Halloween was when I had a bunch of friends over in a highly trafficked neighborhood. We made a bingo board where you had to write the costumes we thought we would see kids show up with. It had to be specific. It could not just be a princess, it had to be Elsa or Cinderella. Any time a kid would ring our doorbell, all these adults ran to the door screaming out the costume names. "Is there a ladybug? Is there a bumble bee?" That was the funnest Halloween I ever had.

Jenna Dewan Tatum Is Ready to Star in a Practical Magic Sequel

It's been nearly 20 years since Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman starred in the now-cult Halloween film Practical Magic, so it might just be time to conjure up a sequel. And one actress is ready and willing to embrace her witchy ways in the reboot: Jenna Dewan Tatum.

More: The Most Random Facts You Never Knew About Sandra Bullock

We recently had the chance to chat with Dewan Tatum, who — let's be real — is basically a shoo-in for a Practical Magic spin-off. She starred in the TV series Witches of Eastwick, surrounds herself with crystals and uses essential oils like it's nobody's business. Plus, she's alluringly beautiful. In other words, she just generally gives off that whole Fleetwood Mac "Witchy Woman" vibe.

When we pitched the idea to Dewan Tatum about bringing Practical Magic back to the big screen, she couldn't contain her excitement.

"Oh my gosh, that’s so cute. Let’s do it — make that happen!" she said, adding, "First of all, Practical Magic is one of my favorite movies. I think that’s kind of one of the best movies ever made. It’s one I put on when I need to make my day a little better or cheer myself up. It's such a great movie."

Dewan Tatum suggested that perhaps Sandra Bullock (or "Sandy," as she calls her) could make a cameo. Which begs the question, How would Dewan Tatum fit into the Practical Magic picture?

It could be a straightforward reboot, in which case Dewan Tatum would actually star as Sandra Bullock's character, Sally Owens. In which case we suggest Jessica Chastain stand in for Nicole Kidman as Sally's sister, Gillian.

More: Mila Kunis & 7 More Hollywood Witches

Another option would be to have Dewan Tatum play the grown-up version of Sally's raven-haired daughter, Antonio. This works out well because the actress who originally played the little girl, Alexandra Artrip, is no longer acting.

Antonio's sister, of course, was played by a young Evan Rachel Wood. And since we all know she is still acting (hello, Westworld!), she can star alongside Dewan Tatum.

Practical Magic

A third and final option would be to cast Dewan Tatum in the prequel. Yep, you heard me — there's a prequel. Don't feel bad if you weren't in the know, because it just came to be. Practical Magic author Alice Hoffman's The Rules of Magic hit bookshelves on Oct. 10.

According to the book synopsis, Rules follows Susanna Owens and her three children: Franny, Jet and Vincent. "The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart," says the synopsis. "The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy."

Get hype, people! This could certainly lead to a Practical Magic spin-off, in which case Dewan Tatum is the perfect pick to play Jet in her younger years.

Let's just hope that whatever reboot or revival film comes — 'cause you know it's inevitable — fares better than the original when it comes to bad juju. According to director Griffin Dunne, in fact, the first film was actually cursed by a real witch.

In a new interview with Vulture, Dunne opened up for the very first time about the incident, explaining that he hired a witch consultant to ensure the film's authenticity. Unfortunately, he got a whole lot more than he bargained for.

When the witch demanded an additional $250,000 for her services and a producer refused, the witch was livid. Dunne returned to the office that day to find a scathing and, to be quite honest, entirely too creepy message waiting for him.

"I got back to my office on the Warner Bros. lot and I listen to my voicemail," she recalled. "'How dare you sic that shrew on me?' she said in the message. 'You think you can buy me off, well let me tell you something... there is a land of curses!'"

Then, Dunne says, the witch slipped into speaking in tongues.

"It was terrifying. I listened to as much as I could and then I hung up. Within minutes, Warner's been served with papers. She's suing Warner Bros."

Ultimately, the studio did settle for an undisclosed amount in order to get the witch to back away. However, Dunne could never shake the idea that she really did somehow hex the movie — upon its release in 1998, it was critically panned and largely unsuccessful at the box office.

But hey, the joke's on the witch, because Practical Magic is a Halloween classic now. If you don't believe us, just ask Jenna Dewan Tatum.

Another Actor Is Leaving Grey's Anatomy & It's the Literal Worst

Grey's Anatomy fans just can't catch a break — unless you count our hearts, which are typically in a tiny pile of shards by the end of each episode. The latest blow to our fragile feels? The departure of yet another actor on the tear-jerking medical drama.

More: ABC Reveals Whether Sandra Oh Is Returning for Grey's 300th Episode

Suffice it to say that this article contains spoilers pertaining to this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy. You have been warned.

You're probably curious as to who is saying goodbye this time, especially considering we're all still trying to accept the fact that Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) isn't coming back. Or that Ben (Jason George) is currently training to switch careers from surgeon to firefighter — at which point he'll be transitioning to the Grey's firefighter spinoff.

Alas, those aren't the two departures we're talking about. This week's episode announced a new departure: Nathan Riggs, played by Martin Henderson.

We're not going to mince words about it, either: this sucks. Grey's made the big deal about introducing Nathan and making him a love interest for Meredith. Were we ready to see her move on from McDreamy? Never, naturally. But any good Grey's fan knows that sometimes sacrifices must be made (like, a lot).

So we sucked it up. Then, something strange happened. We started to like Nathan. We even started to like him with Meredith. For a brief, shiny moment, she was happy again. Not MerDer happy, but happy.

More: Every Heartbreaking Tragedy Meredith Has Experienced in Grey's History

Fans made the grand gesture of letting Nathan in our hearts too, which should have been our first cause of concern. Rookie mistake, right? You never get attached to someone too soon on Grey's, lest they get killed off or sent away, and you're left nursing another broken heart.

Enter Nathan.

After a mere two seasons, Grey's wrote Nathan off so that he could go be with his ex-fiancée, Megan, who only recently resurfaced after being held as a POW for a decade.

"I loved that we are able to give Riggs a happy ending worthy of his character and talent," Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter. "As for Martin, this is not an ending for our relationship. He has been part of the Shondaland family since the pilot of Inside the Box and he will always be family. I can't wait to find a new project to work with him on in the future."

Granted, it's a little comforting to know that Nathan gets to go live his best life with Megan. Although, to be honest, we're also pretty salty she is leaving. Actress Abigail Spencer is a true gem, and we were hoping for more of an arc than a few episodes for her.

More: Grey's Anatomy Fan Favorite Sara Ramirez Is Making Her Return to TV

Here's hoping Rhimes lets fans enjoy Kim Raver's Teddy — who returned this season after many years away — for more than five minutes. Even so, we understand that guest stars come and go.

But listen up, Rhimes! If you try to take away OG Grey's guy Alex Karev too, you're gonna have to pry him from our cold, dead fan hands.

Andrew Lincoln Reveals Who Is in the Graves on The Walking Dead

Outside of Grey's Anatomy, there's arguably no other show that likes to toy with fans' emotions more than The Walking Dead. So, when Rick Grimes appeared to be looking over two new graves at the start of the Season 8 premiere, fans understandably had no chill — are we about to find out we're losing two more survivors?

More: This Walking Dead Fan Favorite Could Come Back for the FTWD Crossover

Don't fret just yet, y'all. Andrew Lincoln, who plays the fearless leader, just set the record straight.

I mean, in all honesty, what he had to say still feels like a punch to the proverbial gut, but just not a new one. Rather, this is a wound fans have been nursing a while... since the Season 7 premiere, to be precise.

Did you guess yet? The two graves Rick stands near belong to fan favorites Abraham Ford and Glenn Rhee, both of whom had their skulls bashed in by Negan's barbed-wire-covered baseball bat last season (damn you to hell, Lucille!).

More: TWD's Josh McDermitt Quits Social Media After Receiving Death Threats

"I think it's a key moment when Rick is by the graveside of two of his dearest friends. It was a very powerful moment of harking back to the beginning of last season and the brutal way they were taken from us. I don't think he's ever recovered from that. I don't think any of them have," Lincoln explained in an AMC featurette.

By "any of them," Lincoln clearly must mean the fandom, too. 'Cause, trust, we still lose sleep over that grisly premiere and the subsequent loss of two heroes.

More: An Ode to TWD's Negan — Because He's Not the Worst Villain on TV

But let's look at the silver linings here. For starters, those graves aren't filled with characters whose deaths we'll have to come to grips with soon — we get a brief reprieve from death. And, second, Rick and his crew apparently won't rest until they see justice for Abe and Glenn.

Said executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, "It really is going to be an all-out war with Negan and to avenge those deaths."

Can Pets Suffer From SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)?

$

0

In the wintertime, many humans experience seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, an issue associated with lethargy due to short, cold days. Many pet owners have reported seeing changes in their pets during the winter months too. A cat might eat more or change their active hours. A dog may be less inclined to get up from a nap to greet you as days grow shorter. This made us wonder: Do pets get SAD too?

“Since we can’t talk to our animal subjects and determine if they are depressed, we have to rely upon ‘depressive-like behaviors,’ such as increased huddling and decreased locomotion,” says Dr. Joe Turk, a veterinarian at Animal Care Center in Saint Joseph, Michigan. “While SAD is not a recognized disease or condition in dogs or cats, it is certainly possible.”

More: Why Do Cats Knead? There's Actually 7 Ways to Answer That

While Turk says most of his patients don’t notice a seasonal difference in their pet’s behavior, he has heard a few concerns over wintertime. However, veterinarians can’t be sure it’s related to SAD. Beyond a change in daylight being a cause, he says, “other possibilities include temperature fluctuations, activity level/exercise changes, seasonal allergies or even a decrease in available prey and hunting activity.”

It’s also possible wintertime behavior changes are actually our pets reacting more to us than the weather. “Since many of our companion animals are so in tune with their people’s moods, it is also possible that people with SAD may be more likely to have pets that also exhibit concomitant depressive behavior,” he said.

There are several products on the market for treating SAD in pets, from pet-friendly UV lamps to vitamin D and other supplements, but Turk says to take these with a grain of salt. “Anecdotally, I have several clients who use these lamps for themselves who have reported that their cats and dogs love to bask in the light with them,” he told me. They’re not harmful, he says, but there aren’t scientifically reliable studies to confirm whether they have real benefit.

He’s even more skeptical of supplements. “While supplements such as vitamin D and melatonin have been tried in multiple species, I’ve seen no benefit in dogs and cats,” he said. “Theoretically at least, all cats and dogs on a well-balanced commercial food should not require any additional supplementation.” He also urges anyone considering a supplement to run it by their vet first. “Rule No. 1 in veterinary medicine should be: ‘Cats and dogs are not little people,’” he told me. “Some human drugs and supplements may be dangerous to pets.”

Before you brush off a winter behavior change as no big deal, Turk recommends speaking to your vet, particularly with cats. “Cats are masters at hiding signs of illness, and sometimes minor behavioral changes may be indicative of a serious physical problem,” he said. If your pet’s seasonal issues continue, Turk recommends providing a good place for them to lay in the sun, a few new toys, puzzle feeders and incorporating more play into your animal’s routine.

Ellen DeGeneres Gets Criticized for Her HBD Tweet to Katy Perry

What should have been an innocent, albeit very cheeky, happy birthday wish from one friend to another became the focal point of serious criticism on Wednesday. It was Katy Perry's birthday and, among all the well-wishes, the "Swish Swish" singer got a shout-out from her friend Ellen DeGeneres. Turns out, however, that DeGeneres' idea of a funny yet sweet "happy birthday" tweet might have sounded better in her mind than when it was written out.

DeGeneres chose to quote Perry's lyrics from her 2013 song "Birthday" back to her for her own special day. "Happy Birthday, @katyperry! It's time to bring out the big balloons," DeGeneres wrote under a photo that was taken of the celebs (along with DeGeneres' wife, Portia de Rossi) at the Grammys a few years ago. In the photo, DeGeneres seems to be jokingly ogling Perry's cleavage while Perry looks at the camera, which adds some sexual innuendo to her birthday tweet for Perry.

Given the sensitivity the public has developed in the wake of serious allegations of sexual assault made against men in a variety of different industries, including Amazon's Roy Price, Harvey Weinstein, Bill O'Reilly and President Donald Trump, it's entirely understandable that the public didn't react with the same kind of cheeky joy DeGeneres most likely intended. Instead, the birthday tweet was perceived as crass and gross, with some calling out the double standard of a woman being able to joke about ogling another woman or referencing her body while a man could not (the public doesn't really seem to like it either way, coming from a man or a woman, for the record).

Here's a sampling of the arguably fair and expected criticism DeGeneres received in response to her tweet to Perry.

Of course, one Twitter user (who was certainly not the only person pointing this out) tried to quell concerns that DeGeneres was being crass in any way by pointing out that she was simply referencing Perry's own lyrics in celebration of her birthday.

DeGeneres has no reason to cater to public opinion; nor does she have to tailor her tweets to fit into a large public conversation. However, a little more consideration for the context of the tweet could arguably have helped keep criticisms at bay. Let's hope this problem blows over quickly and doesn't dampen Perry or DeGeneres' week too much.
