Let’s Talk About Qoya, the Sensual & Empowering Movement for Women

$

0

Qoya is a women’s wellness movement that incorporates yoga, traditional dance and the exploration of movement. The word "qoya" means queen in Quechuan and translates into the idea that movement can influence different emotions and feelings. The practitioners suggest movement is tied to the connection to the mind and the body’s wisdom.

“We remember our essence as women is wise, wild and free,” says Qoya’s mission statement, providing context for their sensually driven and empowering form of dance.

The three core components of Qoya are wisdom, being wild and being free, which break down to:

  • Wise: the wisdom of yoga
  • Wild: the creative expression in dance
  • Free: expanding our capacity to enjoy our bodies through sensual movement

Each class is themed to support femininity and uniqueness, which allows students to tap into their memory, heart, mind and spirit.

More: Yogasms are real, & this is how you have one

What exactly does “sensual movement” mean for a student?

“Sensual movement is movement that feels good in your body in the moment,” says Revanna Powell, an instructor of Qoya classes. Qoya requires you to “slow down enough to notice what feels good,” she adds.

Like yogic practices, Qoya reinforces the notion that we should pay attention to what is happening to our movement and to explore those movements in various motions. Instead of focusing on how one looks, the classes encourage one to simply feel and move. This idea can be translated into more sexual experiences in the bedroom, where performance and how we appear to our partner can sometimes dominate our minds and influence pleasure.

For beginners, a Qoya class can be imagined without a mirror and with candles, oracle cards and a set of movements that last for the entire duration of a song. The class will begin with opening the heart, opening the hips and then moving into sun salutations. Sounds familiar, right? Yoga is definitely a huge influence on Qoya; however, the movement goes beyond the floor and into another state of flow. The movement includes a shadow dance, where students find their shadow and face their movements privately. A choreographed component of the class includes more of a cohesive moment, while the class typically ends by freestyling around the studio. Students are encouraged to move as they wish, vast or modest, rapid or gradual, while still remembering to connect to their body.

How does connectedness work?

By setting yourself free, you are able to connect. The “13 pillars of a Qoya class each offer the opportunity to tap into your body in the moment and reconnect to aspects that you may have forgotten or been conditioned to disregard,” says Powell. These pillars include the steps above, which detail what a Qoya class is all about. Ritual, salutations, finding space and strengthening the mind and body, are all at the core of how to accomplish a connection to freedom.

Just like Qoya can connect you to your body, it also connects you to those around you. Powell says Qoya offers practitioners empowerment by “bringing them home to their truth and helping them remember the essence of who they are by giving them the space to express.” Outside relationships with a partner or friend can be positively impacted as a result.

What happens after a Qoya class?

So, you’ve finished your class. What should you expect to feel? Qoya has a saying that they utilize that encapsulates the sensual movement classes: “Come as you are, and leave as more of who you are.” While everyone has a varied experience ranging from different emotions, Qoya hopes to spark a feeling of freedom in women.

Qoya offers free 15- to 20-minutes videos of sensual movements for viewers and interested students. This form of dance features long, concentrated but unrestrained gestures, which can be done anywhere in any location. Finding a trueness to your body, hips bending and flowing, eyes closed or open, Qoya may offer a feminine sensation for students who yearn to feel wise, wild and free.

Does Your Kid Need Glasses?

$
0
0

Does my kid need glasses? This is a question that keeps some parents up at night and one I hear often as a doctor of optometry. If your child is having trouble seeing the board at school or is struggling to concentrate, it could be because they can’t see well.

Studies indicate that 60 percent of children identified as "problem learners" suffer from undetected vision problems. Understand that your child may not bring up a vision problem in conversation due to fear, insecurity or simply not realizing what poor vision feels like, so it's up to parents to look for clues and ask the right questions.

Luckily for us, there are plenty of common signals that indicate your child may be experiencing a vision problem. These symptoms include covering one eye, holding reading materials close to the face, complaining of headaches, expressing discomfort or having a short attention span. Given these signs, it’s important to consult your doctor of optometry if you’re concerned your child may need glasses. While glasses are important, the American Optometric Association reiterates that comprehensive eye exams mean a lot more.

More: 5 Subtle Clues Your Toddler Might Need Glasses

Why is an annual eye exam important?

It’s easy to lose sight of the importance of scheduling an annual eye health exam for kids. Kids and parents alike are often overscheduled, inundated by work, school and other activities; it’s a challenge to keep up. Plus, if your child is not already experiencing a vision issue, getting their eyes checked may just not seem important. But it is.

A comprehensive eye exam is not only important in determining if your child’s vision is healthy or if they need glasses; it’s also instrumental in looking for signs and symptoms that can speak volumes about a child's overall health, such as detecting and diagnosing brain damage or head trauma. Doctors often call the eyes “the windows to your health,” and for children, that's especially important. Why? Eye exams can help you detect and address many problems early.

What’s the difference between a vision screening & a comprehensive eye exam?

Eye and vision health can impact every aspect of a child’s life, from their cognitive, social and motor development to their academic achievement. But vision screenings like those offered at a school or pediatrician’s office are not enough to ensure a child’s eyes are healthy. Many vision screenings only test for visual acuity, whereas during a comprehensive eye exam, doctors of optometry, or optometrists, use specialized equipment and procedures to examine total eye health.

Vision screenings may catch acuity issues, but they can miss larger eye health problems that often lack any signs or symptoms. In fact, 75 percent of other eye health conditions are missed by such tests, and even when problems are detected, 61 percent of children do not receive suitable follow-up. An annual comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist is the only way to guarantee a child is receiving the eye care they need and deserve.

More: These Foods Actually Improve Your Eyesight

So, when should I take my child for an exam?

To underscore the importance of a lifetime of eye health care beginning in childhood, the American Optometric Association recently released a newly revised guideline on pediatric eye health that outlines recommendations to help care for and protect children’s eye health and vision. Here's why:

  • One in 5 preschoolers has a vision problem. Preschool-age children should receive at least one in-person comprehensive eye and vision examination between the ages of 3 and 5 to prevent and/or diagnose and treat any eye or vision conditions that may affect visual development.
  • Previous recommendations were for eye exams to occur once every two years, but school-age children should actually receive an in-person comprehensive eye and vision examination annually to diagnose, treat and manage any eye or vision problems.
  • There is a high prevalence of vision problems in kids who experience a concussion, so it's important that these children visit their optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam in addition to an appointment with their general health care provider. Comprehensive eye exams are essential in protecting their vision as well as determining if more medical care is needed.

It’s never too late to get a comprehensive eye exam for your child. Try to plan this exam around other annual milestones, such as physicals, vaccinations or birthdays. An annual comprehensive eye exam will help protect your child's eye and vision health and ensure their future looks bright (and clear and in sharp focus).

Here's How To Shut Down Manterruptors, Ruth Bader Ginsburg-Style

$

By Alex Wilson

There’s nothing worse than being on a roll in a meeting and then getting interrupted by a colleague. It’s a frustrating experience, especially when it can be categorized as a “manterruption.” Sometimes, however, it’s completely by accident.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg knows this just as well (if not better) than the average woman in the workplace. In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, Ginsburg discussed unconscious bias and how it leads to major discrimination against women.

Ginsburg gave an example of an oral argument that happened when she and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor were both on the bench. Ginsburg assumed that O’Connor was done speaking and interjected. “I thought that she had finished, so I asked a question,” Ginsburg said. “Justice O’Connor said, ‘Just a minute, I’m not finished.”

Though it was a small interaction between two colleagues, it became a major media event. The next day, USA Today ran a story about the exchange: “Rude Ruth Interrupts Sandra.”

More: Is the Tone of Your Voice Holding Your Career Back?

Not only did Ginsburg apologize to O’Connor, who told her not to worry and that “the guys do it to each other all the time,” but Ginsburg advocated for herself when a reporter later confronted her about the incident. Ginsburg said she asked the reporter if he noticed her male colleagues constantly interrupting each other.

“He watched for a month,” Ginsburg said. “Then he came to my chambers and said, ‘You know you’re right. They do interrupt each other all the time, but I never noticed it.”

Even though manterruptions are annoying and can be detrimental to a professional woman’s authority, there are strategies you can use to shut down manterruptors (and the people who try to convince you they’re not a big deal). Here are some RBG-inspired ways to make sure you’re heard at work.

More: How the Best Employers Craft Their Sexual Harassment Policy

1. Use active words

A Northwestern University study on oral arguments showed scientific proof that female Supreme Court Justices are interrupted more. “We find that judicial interactions at oral argument are highly gendered,” the researchers wrote. “With women being interrupted at disproportionate rates by their male colleagues, as well as by male advocates.”

When Ginsburg and other female justices used polite language, like “sorry,” “may I ask” and “excuse me,” they were interrupted much more frequently. However, the study also showed that in response to this, Ginsburg changed the way she spoke. “Ginsburg appears to transition to a more aggressive style of questioning,” the researchers pointed out. “And she is not interrupted nearly as frequently.”

2. Advocate for more women on the team

Ginsburg speaks on legal matters and gender equality regularly. Though she personally doesn’t get to decide which justices join the Supreme Court, she is public about wanting as many women on the bench as possible. When asked when there will be “enough” women on the Supreme Court in 2012, Ginsburg gave her now iconic response. “I say, when there are nine,” she said at the 10th Circuit Bench & Bar Conference. “There have been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.”

Regardless of whether you’re on the Supreme Court bench or sitting around a conference room table, having more women in the room is always a good idea. Together, you can promote each other’s ideas, stand up against “hepeating” and invite female co-workers to finish their statements when they get interrupted. Make an active effort to bring in female employees at all levels of your organization, and the results will speak for themselves.

More: The Best Way to Respond to an Insult According to Steve Jobs

3. Stand up for yourself

Despite their ideological differences, Ginsburg was a close friend of late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. They disagreed on many things, but remained “best buddies” (and those are Ginsburg’s words!) throughout their career, even once going on vacation together.

Ginsburg’s friendship with Scalia reminds us that it’s important to get to know people on the other side of the table. If you find yourself consistently interrupted by a male colleague, ask him to coffee so you can share your concerns. It’s possible that he hasn’t noticed and will appreciate you bringing the matter up in private. If the discussion grows confrontational and you feel that you need to get a supervisor involved, you will have at least advocated for yourself by making the effort to address the issue on your own.

You shouldn’t be expected to solve the manterruption problem, but until men start understanding their own behaviors and how they affect women at work, these strategies are a good way to get started. RBG would be proud!

“The best tricks to making your eyes pop are two things: Structure — creating illusions, elongating lines — and then the other thing is creating a focus,” he told hosts Zuri Hall and former Bachelor contestant Vanessa Grimaldi on Sunday’s episode of freeSTYLE.

To accomplish the look, Barnes actually relies on the color wheel, a widely used illustration that demonstrates how colors relate to one another, to determine which shades go best with her eye color.

“If you have blue eyes or green eyes and you’re using orangey bronzes, really warm golds or purple and plums, you’re going maximize the impact,” he continued.

But be careful not to use the colors directly opposite on the color wheel. “So obviously, red is opposite green on the color wheel, but if you were to use red on your eyes, it might be a little much. But, a plumy tone with red undertones, or a pink even, can be really beautiful,” he says.

To finish the look, Barnes also recommends using a Sigma Beauty highlighter on your cupid’s bow and pairing it with a Wet 'n Wild blush for a glowy effect. So next time you want to make your eyes pop, learn the difference between your primary and secondary colors first.

That Bump On Your Vulva Could Be A Bartholin’s Cyst

$

If you have a vulva and you are familiar with how it feels, chances are you’ve at least once encountered something in that area that has given you pause. As in, “That wasn’t there before,” possibly followed by panic, depending on how prone to anxiety you are.

The good news is if what you discovered is a lump or bump hanging out around your vulva area in the form of a rounded bulge near your vaginal lips, it could be a Bartholin's cyst. If this is the first time you’re hearing about the existence of Bartholin anything, you’re not alone.

“Most women are not even aware that they exist until this happens,” says Dr. Kyrin Dunston, an OB-GYN in Atlanta.

More: The link between ovarian cysts and endometriosis

The Bartholin's glands, which are essentially invisible, are located on either side of the opening of the vagina in the bottom corners of the vulva, and their job is to generate fluid that keeps the vulva lubricated during sex. If the ducts that supply the fluid get blocked, the fluid builds up, and that results in a cyst that’s noticeable, but usually not painful. The blockage is usually caused by excessive friction or rubbing the glands together, but also by infections (although it’s important to note that a Bartholin's cyst is not an infection, although they can become infected) and by sexual stimulation.

Your doctor can assess the existence of a Bartholin’s cyst during a pelvic exam. They’re common occurrences, and the cysts usually go away without the need for medical intervention. To get rid of one, Dr. Aditi G. Jha, senior consulting physician at the online hospital JustDoc, recommends a warm-water soak with Epsom salts or coconut oils as well as avoiding friction or sex. A doctor might also prescribe warm compresses as well as over-the-counter painkillers.

Bartholin's cysts can be tender, and while they don’t always get bigger, they can grow to the size of an orange. Some folks experience pain during intercourse, and in more serious cases, while walking and sitting.

Of course, if the cyst is causing you discomfort or pain (above a six on a scale of 10, says Jha), you have a fever or if there’s discharge and/or redness around your vulva, it’s definitely time to see a doctor since an abscess can result from an untreated infection. Your doctor can drain an infected Bartholin’s cyst by making an incision and inserting a catheter that stays in for 4 to 6 weeks, during which you proceed with your life as normal, but talk to your doctor about what it means for sex. In another procedure, an incision is created in the cyst and the doctor places strategic stitches that form a small pouch from which the cyst fluid drains (this is called marsupialization).

How can you tell the difference between a Bartholin's gland cyst and a sexually transmitted infection?

“Distinguishing it from the other problems around the same area is simple if you know the anatomy of where these cysts are usually located,” says Jha.”Most STIs will come up with multiple bumps and often extend into the vagina as well. The cyst is usually not itchy. Also, these cysts are commonly pearly white in color in contrast to the rashes or bumps, which would be usually red.”

Bartholin’s cysts aren’t associated with STIs, but according to Sydney Ziverts, health and nutrition investigator at ConsumerSafety.org, bacteria that’s transmitted sexually can infect the Bartholin’s gland. “If you’re concerned about whether a cyst is due to a sexually transmitted disease, it’s best not to speculate and instead, visit your GYN where they can take a sample and send to a laboratory,” says Ziverts.

More: Interstitial Cystitis Is Like a UTI, & 90 Percent of Sufferers Are Women

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do to prevent the occurrence of a Bartholin’s cyst, and they can come back after treatment. You’re more likely to develop one if you’re sexually active, haven’t been pregnant or have had just one pregnancy. Bartholin’s cysts are harmless unless they become infected, but again, don’t self-diagnose, and see your doctor if something is up, if for no other reason than to soothe your addled nerves. If you are super-anxious when it comes to visiting doctors, it can help to write down your questions and concerns ahead of time and to bring a supportive person with you to the appointment.

It’s no secret that folks who struggle with infertility go through a lot of heartache. And to call the IVF treatment process "emotional" is an understatement. For many couples as well as women trying to get pregnant on their own, it can take years of pitfalls before they finally get the good news: a positive pregnancy test. So when it’s time to share that moment they’ve been hoping and praying for, why not go all out?

Just try not to tear up at some of these pregnancy announcements from IVF parents-to-be — most of which were years in the making. But as you can see, it's all well worth the wait.

A painful process

To hear about IVF is one thing, but when you see a photo of every injection and medication that goes into the treatment process, it really paints the picture. This mom, known as @martinisandmedicine on Instagram, was diagnosed with stage-4 endometriosis and tried to conceive for four long years before she got pregnant with her son. On her blog, she wrote about the pain of infertility, saying, “The baby in my belly, soon in my arms, will not dull the pain of the next pregnancy announcement or baby shower or birth. They will always remind me of my struggle. Past and future, because I know this struggle doesn't end. But to every single one of my babies, the one who made it and the ones who didn't; you were worth it.”

A wish worth the wait

This stunning twosome’s pregnancy announcement could be that of any couple, right? Except @hatching_Baby_Siegel and her husband tried to have a baby for over two years before she became pregnant with their daughter-to-be. Still, she was quick to acknowledge they were luckier than some. “It’s not the length of your suffering, but also the depth of your sorrow,” she wrote on her post. “For two years, we were overcome with fear and grief, and it is not something that we will ever forget. This little girl will always know how deeply longed for she was.”

Ryan Strzelecki’s relief at hearing his baby-to-be’s heartbeat for the first time is contagious. He and his wife, Annette, tried to have a kid for 1,041 days (that’s almost three years). And his advice for other couples experiencing infertility is sweet, albeit a mixed metaphor: “For anyone who may be going through the emotional roller coaster of trying to start a family, have faith and lean into your partner as you navigate this river,” he wrote.

“It’s our time — a lovely family time,” Klum told Redbook in 2010. “It’s about remembering this moment of love we gave to each other and reinforcing it.”

While that union didn’t last and Seal later admitted it wasn't his favorite part of their marriage, many other couples took a page from their playbook and got married all over again — just not as many times as the now-divorced duo. From small affairs to large events, here are some of our favorite celebs who reminded each other how important those words are in a marriage and are making their unions last.

The couple married in 2008, and it took six years to see their official wedding photos. When it comes to that second ceremony, we have only heard reports that the couple renewed their vows during a vacation in Corsica in 2014. The ceremony occurred on Bey’s 33rd birthday, and the duo reportedly consider this their new wedding date after marital strife, which was confirmed through their albums Lemonade and 4:44.

Matt Damon & Luciana Barroso

When you do a small courthouse wedding the first time around, sometimes you want to do the splashy wedding for the vow renewal. That’s exactly what Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana Barroso, did in 2013.

The couple had 50 family members and friends join them in St. Lucia for the event.

“It’s nice to say your vows in front of family. That’s the point of taking the vows,” said Damon at a Harvard University event in 2013. “These are people who will hold you to them. One of my vows was I gave her the side of the bed closer to the bathroom. And if I don’t stick to that, I’m gonna hear about that from my mom, brother and father.”

Viola Davis & Julius Tennon

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon went the romantic route to renew their vows in 2016. The couple did it the day before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 13. Davis chose a stunning gown from Carmen Marc Valvo and even had her daughter in a custom gown from the designer.

When it came to the guest list, she also went big by inviting her pal Oprah Winfrey.

“I wanted an experience of feeling alive,” Davis told InStyle. “There’s no better way to feel what life is truly about than the birth of a child and getting married to someone you love — really love. It's a reminder. A wake-up. My career is about success, but my marriage and my life is about significance.”

The couple have had a united front since the beginning of their courtship, but that didn't stop Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen from renewing their vows in Costa Rica about six weeks after they tied the knot in Santa Monica, California, in 2009. Both ceremonies were intimate, but Costa Rica holds a special place in their heart as their favorite getaway location.

David & Victoria Beckham

David and Victoria Beckham married in a lavish ceremony in 1999 that was fit for royalty — they even had his-and-hers thrones to sit on. When they renewed their vows in 2006 at their home, it was a simpler affair.

It was so simple that David kept it a surprise from Victoria, and afterward, the couple also kept it a secret from the press for almost two years. With Brooklyn and Romeo as page boys, the couple renewed their vows in front of a handful of friends and family.

"It was simple, beautiful and very non-showbiz. It was about them as a couple and a family unit — not glitz and glamour,” a source told the Daily Mail in 2008.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary by renewing their vows at a winery in Long Island, New York, in late June. The couple spoke to the Associated Press about why the ceremony was so important to them.

“You think, like, once you get married, everything’s like, you’re done. But it’s really good to say, ‘Hey, I’m still in this.’”

It’s been a rocky road for Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne over the last 35 years of marriage, but the couple are sticking with each other through thick and thin. After Ozzy had an affair with his hairstylist, it seemed like the indiscretion would split the two apart.

But after weathering the difficult time, the duo decided to work through their issues and renew their vows on Mother’s Day in Las Vegas.

"For me, this was actually our real wedding day," Ozzy told HELLO! Magazine. "This is the one that I will remember. Sharon and I have been through so much, and this honestly feels like a new beginning."

Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott

Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott didn’t necessarily get their relationship off on the right foot when they fell in love because they were both married to other people. They wound up getting married in 2006 in Fiji after divorcing their first spouses, and they renewed their vows in 2010. The second time around, their two oldest kids, Liam and Stella, were in attendance.

However, there’s no word on a second renewal, even though Dean was involved in a cheating scandal in 2013.

LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian kicked off their relationship the same way Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott did — with an affair. It was a relationship that many outsiders did not think would last since there was so much fighting between LeAnn and Brandi Glanville, Eddie’s first wife.

The couple renewed their vows on their one-year anniversary, and they have happily been married for the last six years.

Alec Baldwin is pretty good at being presidential. And by that I mean, he's pretty great at impersonating the current man holding the office on Saturday Night Live.

But it turns out, Baldwin's had dreams of running for public office for a while.

In a 2008 interview with 60 Minutes, Baldwin said it was a childhood dream of his to be a politician.

"There's no age limit on running for office, to a degree," he said at the time. "Something I might do, one day."

To further fuel the fire, Baldwin sent out a tweet on Friday which read, "If I run for a President, think of how entertaining the debates would be," which led many to speculate if Baldwin was actually joking.

In 2011 Baldwin even considered running for mayor of New York City, but Baldwin later said he changed his mind.

"I've lost my appetite," he explained on his podcast, Here's the Thing With Alec Baldwin. "Plus the people that are running for mayor — I know this is terrible — I look at them and I don't see myself in that crowd. They're like a guy on a date that you can tell he just can't wait to get his hand up your blouse before even the lights go out in the theater. They're all just so horny for it. Horny for their own ascension. Whereas for me, I've got a job now… I've got a good job."

But just because he lost his appetite to run for mayor doesn't mean he lost his appetite for the White House.

During an interview on BBC One's The One Show, Harington revealed he cried at the script read-through with the cast.

"I’m really emotional about it," he said. "I cried at the end."

Of course, Harington was sure to qualify that statement. He said his emotions didn't necessarily come from plot points in the script's finale, but in the idea of the franchise ending.

"I think no one really cares about it more than us," Harington said of the cast and crew of the show.

He explained, "It’s been an institution longer than any other institution I’ve been in, school, drama school, anything. I get a bit weepy thinking about it. It’s gonna be a strange sort of year saying goodbye to everyone."

Why Movies Should Feature Sex Scenes With People With Disabilities

Finding out you’re disabled or have a lifelong incurable illness is transformative. I was 30 when I found out I had multiple sclerosis, but had probably been living with the condition unknowingly for a lot longer. Following two major relapses within the space of four months, my body totally changed, and tasks I once found easy became challenging at best, impossible at worst. And I know I’m not alone in wishing there were more resources for people with disabilities coming to terms with their conditions and more realistic portrayals of those with disabilities on screen.

There’s been a growing backlash against actors who are able-bodied portraying characters who are disabled (from Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking to Jake Gyllenhaal in Stronger). While in some situations, this may be unavoidable, it’s undeniable that the stories of characters with disabilities are often incredibly limited, reduced to disappointing sob stories or focused on the inevitable deaths of those with chronic conditions. And most important, we’re rarely shown people with disabilities having sex, as if being ill precludes all physical activity, especially sex.

More: Overcoming the Stigma Surrounding Disability & Sex

In some ways, movies can’t be totally blamed for portraying characters with disabilities as sexless or barren or devoid of love. Society often suggests that those living with conditions that affect their physical well-being have lost interest in sex. Following my own diagnosis, a therapist suggested that my dissatisfaction with my sex life was a direct result of my own inadequacies as a sick person and that I was simply expecting too much. Instead of encouraging me to explore my sexuality at a time when my body desperately needed therapeutic attention, this particular therapist told me that the sexual side of a relationship dwindled anyway and that companionship was far more important. But does a couple’s sex life always have to melt like ice in a gin and tonic, inevitably and a little too quickly for my liking?

Personally, I refused to believe that sex was doomed and that all couples had to succumb to the stereotypical, long-term relationship-bed death that plagues multiple discussions on Reddit. For me, believing people with disabilities could not only have sex but be great at it too was a huge part in fighting for my life. Being diagnosed with a degenerative disease at any moment in your life is enough to make you want to quit, but sex is one of the reasons I want to live. I don’t care if that sounds shallow. Being disabled shouldn’t mean missing out on what everyone else experiences. Frankly, multiple sclerosis means I have very little to lose, so why would I give up on sex if I care about it?

I know I’m not alone in believing people with disabilities should be allowed to enjoy and explore their sexuality in whatever format that takes (ability levels change, but that’s why some goddess invented vibrators, and sensual touch can be every bit as erotic as penetration). An important part of enjoying sexuality is seeing yourself represented in the movies and television shows you love.

While I have zero problem watching Jennifer Aniston fall in love again and again, there should also be room for actors with disabilities to showcase moments from their own lives on screen. After all, people with disabilities fall in love, have sex and live full lives whenever possible and ultimately have the same desires and needs as every other human being on the planet.

While actors take on a variety of roles throughout their careers, I personally don’t want a Hollywood actor who's able-bodied portraying a character with physical or invisible impairments on screen. This stems from the fact that those with disabilities are made to feel invisible on a daily basis because of their differing needs and ability levels. People with disabilities should be able to tell their own stories and raise awareness about their sex lives in the entertainment industry and in their everyday lives.

More: Sex is still fun when you have a disability

Perhaps movies have an excuse for failing to show realistic portrayals of the sex lives of people with disabilities. But as awareness increases and there’s a growing call for actors with disabilities to play their on-screen counterparts, there’s a very real need to show that sex isn’t just possible with a disability, but can be transformative, life-affirming and downright essential.

More Than 30 Women Have Accused Director James Toback of Sexual Misconduct

Mere weeks after a scathing expose on Harvey Weinstein exposed the movie mogul as a sexual predator, another Hollywood director is being accused of sexual misconduct. This time the Los Angeles Times broke the story, bringing to light 38 women who claim James Toback sexually harassed them — 31 of whom are willing to go on record so far.

According to the Times, these accounts paint a picture of a man who has spent the last several decades using his influence and power to prey upon women.

More: All of the Celebrities Who Have Accused Harvey Weinstein of Sexual Misconduct — So Far

Sometimes they were women he'd hired. Sometimes they were aspiring actresses. Sometimes they were simply women he ran into at the park. But regardless of how they crossed his path, the women all had eerily similar accounts of what happened next.

Under the guise of an interview, audition or other business matter, Toback — whose body of work includes Bugsy, Black and White and Tyson — would convince them to meet with him. Some women described being invited into hotel rooms and movie trailers, while others' interaction with Toback occurred in public parks.

Once alone with Toback, he would then proposition the women in a sexual inappropriate way, whether it be asking them how much pubic hair they had to asking them how often they masturbating. And then, the encounters would nearly all inevitably end with Toback trying to dry hump the women or masturbating on them before leaving as though nothing had happened.

In 2008, actress Adrienne LaValley wound up alone with Toback in a hotel room. When he tried to rub his genitals against her and she rebuffed his advance, he stood up and ejaculated in his pants in front of her.

"The way he presented it, it was like, 'This is how things are done.' I felt like a prostitute, an utter disappointment to myself, my parents, my friends. And I deserved not to tell anyone," LaValley told the Times.

Louise Post, a guitarist and vocalist for the band Veruca Salt, shared a similar encounter, saying, "He told me he'd love nothing more than to masturbate while looking into my eyes. Going to his apartment has been the source of shame for the past 30 years, that I allowed myself to be so gullible."

At the time of her harassment in 1987, Post was attending Bernard College.

"It's a common thread among many women I know... after someone mentions they were sexually abused by a creepy writer-director, the response is, 'Oh, no. You got Toback-ed. The numbers are staggering," said Karen Sklaire, a drama teacher/actor/playwright who was subjected to Toback's uninvited grinding back in 1997.

According to actress Echo Danon, Toback harassed her in his trailer on the set of his 1999 film Black and White. "If you look into my eyes and pinch my nipples, I'm going to come in my pants right now," Danon claims he told her as he gripped her thighs. She resisted, and eventually he backed down.

Toback allegedly didn't even try to hide when he harassed then 23-year-old Terri Conn, who was starring in the popular soap opera As the World Turns at the time. When Toback asked her to meet him in Central Park to discuss potential film projects, Conn accepted, hoping to land a role in an edgy independent film.

More: A Timeline of Harvey Weinstein's Life in Hollywood

However, once there, he pulled her aside (people were still nearby) and told her that staring into someone's soul is the best way to get to know them. As for how you stare into someone's soul, he reportedly said the only way to do so is to look into their eyes as they're having an orgasm. He then began to hump her leg while ordering her to look into his eyes.

"I was shocked and frozen and didn't know what to do," she shared. "I thought if I resisted, it could get worse. He could overpower me." After Toback ejaculated in his pants, he got up, told her they'd meet later to discuss his process more and then left. She never accepted his calls and, subsequently, never saw him again.

And the stories go on.

Like Weinstein, Toback has someone managed to remain one of Hollywood's dirty little secrets — despite his sexually inappropriate behavior being reported about by Spy Magazine, Gawker and other outlets over the years.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Facebook early Sunday to say he has been trying to warn people about Toback for years.

James Gunn on Toback

James Gunn on Toback

"When I lived in New York, in the 'nineties, this dude was EVERYWHERE," Gunn starts his post. "I have personally met at least FIFTEEN WOMEN, probably more, who say that he's accosted them in NYC. He essentially goes up to women and says, 'Hey, I'm James Toback, and I'm a famous director, and I feel like there's a connection between us.' Then he shows them some article on himself or some other artifact to prove he is who he is, and tries to get them to go somewhere else with him."

Gunn explains that he tried to do as much as he could to bring Toback's abuse to light over the years, although the story never broke wide open like it has now.

"So I did what I could do in my impotent state — for over twenty years now, I've been bringing up James Toback every chance I could in groups of people," Gunn says. "I couldn't stop him, but I could warn people about him."

Whether you're a football fan or not, you've got at least one good reason to tune into the 2018 Super Bowl — Justin Timberlake just announced he'll be performing at the halftime show.

The singer made the news Twitter official on Sunday, posting a funny video with his buddy Jimmy Fallon to break the scoop. "I DO have the time. Half the time...#PepsiHalftime #SBLII @Pepsi @NFL @JimmyFallon @FallonTonight," Timberlake tweeted.

Of course, the last time Timberlake headlined the halftime show at the Super Bowl was in 2004 when the now-infamous "nipplegate" incident with Janet Jackson occurred. The moment took place during Timberlake's performance of "Rock Your Body," when he snatched a piece of Jackson's bustier off at the line "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song."

Jackson's breast became exposed to millions of viewers, and both artists found themselves in serious hot water. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implemented a five-second broadcast delay during live performances after Timberlake's 2004 Super Bowl gaffe.

But, hey, it's been 13 years. Timberlake has undoubtedly learned many lessons during that time. Now a husband and father, he tends to steer clear of controversy it would seem. Plus, he has an impressive body of work to choose from for his perfomance — Timberlake is a 10-time Grammy winner.

As if all of this wasn't enough to get you stoked about the Super Bowl, Us Weekly is citing an inside source who claims the "Sexy Back"singer's pal and fellow performer, Jay-Z may be making an appearance.

For the time being, though, the source says "as of right now, it will just be Justin — no surprise performers."

Is It Possible for Our Hair to Hurt?

$

0

My daughter is constantly telling me her hair hurts every evening when she takes out her ponytail and we run a comb through it. She describes the feeling as kind of good, but is sure it's her hair that's hurting and wants me to rub her scalp. I know the feeling, as I've felt it when I've had a really tight high ponytail in all day, but it doesn't affect me like it affects her. In fact, I don't feel any discomfort when I have my hair up in a normal ponytail or messy bun all day.

Our nightly conversations always remind me of my favorite episode of Sex and the City when Charlotte is talking about how she has been dating since she was 15 and is still waiting for the man of her dreams to sweep her off her feet. Her epic line, "Where is he? My hair hurts," is all too relatable for a different reason, but brings up the question: Can your hair actually hurt?

More: What Causes Gray Hair & What Happens When I Pluck Them?

We all know when we get a haircut we aren't in pain, but what gives us the feeling that somewhere between our roots and scalp, we swear our hair can hurt?

Dr. Wade Cooper, a neurologist and the director of the headache and neuropathic pain program at the University of Michigan, says our "ponytail headache syndrome" comes from having a sensitive scalp and is a disorder that doesn't affect everyone.

In an article by Haley Otman for Michigan Health, Cooper says that it's "actually a real headache disorder.... It doesn’t affect everyone, but a tightly pulled-back hairdo can be really uncomfortable for those it does affect."

Feeling pain after taking your hair down is a form allodynia, "a normal stimulus that is interpreted as pain," Cooper says.

MoreHow Much Hair Loss Is Normal?

“The hair shaft itself and the hair outside of your head is not pain-sensitive, but the scalp they are embedded in has a lot of pain-sensitive nerves around it,” Cooper tells Michigan Health. “If a ponytail pulls back on the hair follicles, it can irritate a sensitive scalp.”

Cooper warns if you are prone to headaches, your ponytails are more likely to be irritating and cause pain. The best way to prevent irritation is to choose loose up-dos instead of tight hairstyles that can cause headaches. Cooper adds that stress and not getting enough sleep can add to a sensitive scalp.

And if you can take your hair down — even if it's just for a few minutes — you can get relief.

SheKnows spoke with Stephanie Johnson, a licensed hairstylist who specializes in coloring and hair extensions. She explains when we have our hair up, the root is being stretched and "the nerves feel it."

Johnson also adds that if we continue to pull our hair back too tightly or use clip-in extensions, we can cause damage. "Those hair follicles are crying out to you to just give up and they let the hair go and won't produce more. This is how mechanical damage causes hair loss in some women," she says — something we all want to avoid.

More: 10 Things Your Hair Tells You About Your Health

So while our hair can't actually hurt, the discomfort we feel on our scalp when someone pulls our hair, when it's up in a ponytail all day or the headaches we get are all real feelings — the sensitivity is just coming from the scalp, not the hair itself.

We need to be gentle with ourselves when something is hurting and pay attention, as it's a signal something is wrong — and our hair is no exception.

Congratulations are in order for everyone's favorite TV uncle, John Stamos. Stamos announced his engagement to Caitlin McHugh late on Sunday evening on both his Twitter and his Instagram, choosing to post what looks like a super, super adorable piece of artwork that shows cartoon versions of he and McHugh standing in front of Cinderella's Castle at Disneyland after getting engaged. Is Having a Broken Heart an Actual Medical Condition?

$

0

That feeling of all-encompassing sadness and pain when you lose someone close to you isn't just emotionally difficult — it is a recognized medical condition.

Recently, the New England Journal of Medicine published the case of a 61-year-old woman who was rushed to the emergency room with severe chest pains, following the death of her dog. After conducting medical tests, the doctors determined that she did not have a heart attack, but rather takotsubo cardiomyopathy, more commonly known as "broken heart syndrome."

The woman, Joanie Simpson, recently spoke to the Washington Post about her health scare, saying that she was "close to inconsolable" after the death of her 9-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Meha.

According to the American Heart Association, broken heart syndrome is frequently misdiagnosed as a heart attack, but unlike a heart attack, does not involve blocked arteries. This was the case with Simpson.

What does happen is that a part of your heart temporarily enlarges and isn't able to pump properly, while the rest of your heart either functions normally or with even more forceful contractions. Although broken heart syndrome is typically treatable, it can result in severe short-term heart muscle failure.

Broken heart syndrome also overwhelming affects women, with 90 percent of reported cases being in women between 58 to 75 years of age according to Harvard Women's Health Watch.

A 2014 study out of the University of St. George’s in London also found that you can suffer from an actual broken heart following events of great loss or sadness. In fact, they found that the chances of having a stroke or heart attack double in the 30-day period after the death of a partner or loved one.

Grief can also result in declining health because of the physical stress or people forgetting to take medication — or care for themselves in general — during the bereavement process.

"We often use the term a 'broken heart' to signify the pain of losing a loved one and our study shows that bereavement can have a direct effect on the health of the heart," Dr. Sunil Shah, senior lecturer in public health at St. George's University of London and a co-author of the report, said.

More: Debbie Reynolds dead at 84 following stroke

In December 2016, when Debbie Reynolds died one day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher, many wondered whether you can actually die from a broken heart. Grief expert David Kessler, who worked with Fisher on a number of occasions, told USA Today that Fisher and Reynolds "were so close. I would not be surprised if part of this was broken heart syndrome."

At the time, Kessler also offered advice for people who have significant reactions to the deaths of famous people they likely never interacted with in real life, telling USA Today that people shouldn’t feel unnerved that they are distressed over the loss of someone they never met.
