Don't Miss These Diamond-in-the-Rough Hot Spots When You Visit Charleston

Nobody wants to look like a total tourist when they're on vacation — but more important, nobody wants to only hit the touristy spots when they're exploring unknown lands. It's a well-known fact that in order to have the best time possible while on vacay, you need to know how to party like a local, and being privy to all the insider tips is the only way to go. These rules obviously apply when you're visiting Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is home to tons of hidden gems that locals love but probably don't want you to know about.

Founded in 1670, Charleston is steeped in rich Southern history. From the Greek Revival style City Market Hall that intersects at Meeting and Market Streets to the wobbly cobblestone avenues of the French Quarter to the truly haunted (and notorious) Old Charleston Jail, nearly every block and building has a story to tell.

Bright and vibrant magnolia trees and centuries old weeping willows flank the waterfront Battery, one of the city's most famous parks. Mouthwatering aromas of fried green tomatoes and broiled oysters from the award-winning restaurants of Husk, the Ordinary and Fig dance along the streets and the roaring laughter of College of Charleston students (and crisp crack of a beer can opening) hang in the air around Folly Beach.

More: All the Reasons a Sea Vacation Can Be Better Than Anything on Land

Although the sights, tastes and sounds are plenty alluring, the Southern hospitality wins you over. Locals will smile at you as you stroll down King Street, and tour guides and operators will regale you with hilarious stories and quirky Southern sayings on your carriage rides. After just a few hours, you’ll find it no surprise that Charleston is consistently ranked the best place to visit in the world by travel magazines and websites.

The locals love to see their city in the limelight, but they also crave moments and places that aren’t filled with tourists. They want places they can grab a bite and a beer that aren't overrun with visiting families — and the hefty price tags that come with them. These local joints are tried-and-true favorites for the lucky few who get to live in this enchanting city year round. Just don’t tell them I told you about them, or I might just end up on the nice folks bad side.

Joseph P. Riley Stadium

The RiverDogs may be a minor league team, but the stadium is a major hotspot for Charleston locals. During home games, fans flock to the Joseph P. Riley Stadium for locally brewed bottles of Palmetto Brewing Co. Ale, baskets of boiled peanuts — a Southern classic — and some of the best sunset views over the city.

Westbrook Brewing Company

Due to its location in Mount Pleasant, across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, most tourists don’t visit this local favorite. During the weekends, you’d be hard pressed to find a seat anywhere in the tasting room, where groups of friends are laughing, enjoying the homemade pretzels and sipping on some of Westbrook’s famed ale. Just don’t go in expecting to taste the coveted Mexican cake, which sells out within minutes of release. Check out their full selection of brews.

The Gin Joint

Despite its location on King Street — the busiest street in the city — The Gin Joint is still a bit of a hidden gem. Locals flock to this speakeasy-themed bar for specialty cocktails from the bow-tie wearing bartenders. You'd be remiss not to order a drink spiked with gin, but locals love the house mint julep made with a few fragrant drops of mint-infused Everclear.

Leon's Oyster Shop

A tried and true local recommended this one to me, my former college roommate, who grew up on the marsh under the weeping willow trees of Johns Island. Constantly named one of Charleston's best, Leon's Oyster Shop is a true Charlestonian favorite and features everything from chargrilled oysters to scalloped potatoes and fried chicken. Their cocktail game is also on point, and you'd regret not sipping on a silver fizz — made with egg whites and gin — or a classic bloody Mary.

Gullah tours

A unique tour that focuses more on the city’s history than its gleaming architecture, the Gullah Tours are highly ranked among the city’s residents. Each tour gives an inside look at rich Gullah culture as well as history on the language, which was spoken by the low country’s first black inhabitants. Expect to leave the two-hour tour with a few Gullah words memorized thanks to the fluent speaking guide, Alphonso Brown.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge Walkway

You can’t go from Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston without crossing the famous Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, however, most people only see it as they whizz by in their cars or trucks. Locals prefer to cross it on two feet, either by running, biking or walking along the walkway. The span of the bridge is lengthy (over 1,546 feet), but you get truly stunning views of the Copper River, especially during sunset, from the middle.

Charleston Farmers' Market

Not to be confused with the touristy Charleston City Market, the Farmers' Market can be found every Saturday in Marion Square, which is between Hutson and Calhoun Street. The market features only locally-grown produce and herbs and sustainably-farmed meats and seafood. In addition to the bounty, there are food stalls throughout serving up local favorites, like boiled peanuts, gyros and fried eggs and grits.

Charleston SUP Safaris

Locally owned and loved, Charleston SUP safaris, based on Folly Beach, offers locals and visitors a new way to experience the ocean — on paddle boards! From stand-up eco-safari tours of the creeks and nearby marshes to surf lessons or yoga sessions, there's plenty of ways to enjoy the water.

Butcher & Bee

No matter what time you visit, you're going to be met with a line of hungry locals craving a handcrafted sammie at Butcher & Bee. They source all their ingredients locally, right down to the buns, and sling up sides that’ll make your mouth water, like kale slaw and smoked potato salads. The best part about this place? It’s BYOB, which means you can bring your own brews to accompany your craft sandwich. Be sure to do your research, because they have unconventional hours!

Folly Beach Sunrise

Folly Beach, which is located on historic Folly Island, is a favorite for both locals and tourists. However, to avoid the crazy crowds that flock to this seaside escape every summer, the locals pick a rather unique time to visit — sunrise. Many love the low-key vibe that comes with the early morning, and the stunning sight of the rising sun doesn't hurt. Many also choose the morning visit as an optimal time to surf or run without crowds.

The No. 1 Way to Survive Being a New Parent

It was a weeknight about four months into parenthood. I had work the next day. It was the third time I had gotten up with my baby that night — and I lost it. After he was fed and changed and rocked back to sleep, I slumped in the glider chair and had myself a good cry. I was exhausted, frustrated and disappointed. My baby was nearly 4 months old. Wasn't he supposed to be sleeping through the night by now? All my friends were boasting about their babies sleeping for longer and longer stretches at this stage, some for as long as 12 hours.

"My baby is boring now," one friend said of her 4-month-old. "All she does is sleep." Another friend's newborn was already sleeping six hours straight. Yet another said their little one only woke once in the night at 2 weeks old. It was all I could do not to burst at the seams with jealousy.

More: Why My 1-Year-Old Sleeps on the Floor

My kid was an expert waker. He was brilliant at getting up several times in the night, sometimes mere minutes after falling asleep. There were nights when we'd put him to sleep at 9 p.m. and he'd wake up at 9:10 p.m. wanting more food. Then he'd fall back to sleep and wake up at 9:30 p.m. wanting to be rocked. And then again at 9:45 p.m. needing to be rocked yet again. And of course, he often woke up crying just as I had finally started to drift off to a much-needed sleep of my own.

I Googled the hell out of our dilemma. Was I doing something wrong? Was there some magic trick to getting him to sleep better? Most mommy forums and baby sites told me my little one should be sleeping eight hours straight by now. I read comment after comment, article after article about babies the age and size of mine sleeping much better than mine was.

Each iteration from someone else gave me both hope and dismay. I'd prepare each night with optimism: Maybe tonight is the night he will sleep through the night. But it didn't happen.

More: Do Pregnancy "Rules" Really Matter?

It was incredibly draining. I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster with a 300-foot drop — one that I fell down every single night. Then my wife said four words that changed everything: "You can't have expectations." (Well, that and she told me to call off the web searches.)

Those words hit me like a cannonball to the gut and obliterated all the layers of worry that I had been carrying since our son was born. I mentally washed away all those anecdotes from other parents, all the comments on online forums from anonymous moms with bad grammar. They were not me. Their babies were not my baby. Of course it made no sense to compare.

I realized that my expectations had been ruining beautiful moments with my baby since day one. I had expected him to do what I thought he was supposed to based on books and articles and friends' encounters. And because of that, I hadn't been able to accept him for him — his own unique behaviors and personality.

More: 7 Lies People Tell You About Newborns

From that moment on, I made it a point to check myself every time I went down the rabbit hole of expectations. Now, every time I start to plunge down that path, I pull myself right out and just enjoy my time with my baby — even if it happens to be at midnight (and 2 a.m., 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.).

I rock my baby to sleep each night and enjoy the feel of his soft little body in my arms. I savor those middle-of-the-night feeding and cuddling sessions even if I'm exhausted and only have two more hours until I need to get up for work. Because I know those tired, precious moments are limited — and I won't ever get them back.

Blake Lively Says She's the Mom of a Game of Thrones Character

You might not have heard, but Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are raising a baby White Walker. Their daughter Ines just turned 1 — and according to Lively, the little princess rejected her mom's homemade Cookie Monster birthday cake in favor of a blood-soaked steak. Lively charmingly recounted the gory birthday meal in perfect detail to Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show this weekend.

Blake Lively GoT

Blake Lively GoT

"I made a Cookie Monster cake, and it was so cute, and you shove cookies in his mouth, and they crumble, and she just looked at it and then reached for a steak. So she had a birthday steak, and then she grabs the other one, and she's ham-fisting two steaks. I've given birth to a baby Viking. It's like she's a White Walker," Lively said, cracking up Fallon. "Her sleeves were dripping in blood from the steak. I was like, 'This child.'"
Lively and Reynolds have another daughter — James, age 2 — who's also showing some Game of Thrones-level strength (as well as a little bit of sibling rivalry). Lively joked to Fallon that James will cuddle-squeeze her little sister like a boa constrictor: "She's like, 'Oh, I love her so much, but I'm actually really harming her right now.'"
Will the whole family be dressing as GoT characters for Halloween? No, but if 2-year-old James has her way, she and her sister will be going in very different directions, aesthetically speaking. James told Lively that she will be Cinderella — and her little sister will be Mike Wazowski (the green, single-eyed Billy Crystal-voiced character from Monsters, Inc.). Considering Lively and Reynolds' shared sense of parenting humor, we're guessing they will make the most of the mismatched pair for photo opps — but we're still hoping they convince both daughters to go as White Walkers. There's still time!

School Yanks To Kill A Mockingbird Because Discussing Racism Is 'Uncomfortable'

Because 2017 is the new 1817, one Biloxi, Mississippi, school district has yanked To Kill a Mockingbird out of the hands of its eighth graders; according to the school, the book's discussion of the realities of racism might make teens "uncomfortable."

Based on author Harper Lee's Great Depression childhood in Alabama, the book was published in 1960 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. It's nothing short of a masterpiece of American literature, with over 18 million copies in print. The movie version — starring Gregory Peck as central character and best dad ever, Atticus Finch — won some Academy Awards too. But hey! Definitely not worth a read, kids!

The Sun Herald reports that Kenny Holloway — vice president of the Biloxi School Board — actually said, “There were complaints about it. There is some language in the book that makes people uncomfortable." He added, “It’s still in our library. But they’re going to use another book in the 8th grade course.”

The Sun Herald shared an excerpt of an email from a reader who let them know about the school district's decision, which was made "mid-lesson plan, the students will not be allowed to finish the reading of To Kill A Mockingbird.” The unnamed reader told the news outlet, "I think it is one of the most disturbing examples of censorship I have ever heard, in that the themes in the story humanize all people regardless of their social status, education level, intellect, and of course, race. It would be difficult to find a time when it was more relevant than in days like these.”

Biloxi may be spiraling backward in time, but Twitter's not in mood.

So there you have it. Just one more sign that a real-life Handmaid's Tale may be nigh. Maybe it's time for a friendly air-drop of a million copies of To Kill a Mockingbird — book and movie, of course, plus popcorn —into Mississippi? We think this school board in particular might need this quote from Atticus Finch: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Even if it makes you "uncomfortable."

Mandy Moore Wrongfully Shamed for Editing Instagram Pictures

This is just a quick PSA for all those who still need it to remind everyone on the internet that making negative comments (or any comments at all, for that matter) about women's bodies is so unacceptable and no one is here for it — especially not one celebrity who doesn't even deserve it: Mandy Moore.

This Is Us star and genuinely kind person, Moore, recently made an appearance on The Tonight Show to talk to Jimmy Fallon about said super-successful primetime TV series. And since she was proud of that and likes to have fun, she also snapped some photos backstage and posted them to Instagram.

And of course, as if on cue, out came the rude commenters. People were in such disbelief that Moore, who has been drop-dead gorgeous for as long as anyone can remember, could look so good. So, they started accusing her of editing her photo to make her waist look smaller. Soon, the comment section was filled with people accusing Moore of altering her picture as well as sleuths looking for evidence within the photo that she had done so until Moore ended up deleting the post. Who has this much free time, honestly?

It may have been a rough summer for love, but fall is already looking up, because word on the street is that Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander got secretly married! The two were spotted in paparazzi photos wearing wedding bands on Sunday, leading news outlets to do some investigating, and the leading theory is that they had an under-the-radar Saturday ceremony on the Spanish party island of Ibiza.

Both stars were spotted on Ibiza along with a bunch of their friends and family on Friday. Fassbender and Vikander were seen looking casual and happy as they hung out on various parts of the island. Later, their mutual friend Steve McQueen, who directed Fassbender in his 2011 film Shame, was seen at a party at the Yemanja restaurant Friday.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Fassbender and Vikander said their I dos at La Granja farmstead resort, a luxurious getaway spot. Neither of the actors or their reps has commented or confirmed the rumors, but if that location is legit, we just need to see some photos. That is one beautiful couple in an equally beautiful location.

This has definitely been a long time coming. Fassbender and Vikander met in 2014 when they filmed The Light Between Oceans together, where Vikander played Fassbender's wife. Pretty much immediately, rumors started flying that they were dating, but they played coy and kept their relationship under wraps for a while. Now, though, we know how meant-to-be it truly was. Was it love at first sight? We can only hope.

No matter what sport you're watching or what team you're rooting for, sports fans are hungry, so plan on having lots of different foods on hand to satisfy their snacking needs throughout the game. You know everyone loves chocolate, so you'll score big points with the whole crew when you serve these gooey s'mores treats. And they're super easy to make, so you won't be stuck in the kitchen until halftime.

KISSES S’mores Treats recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag large marshmallows
  • 1 bag HERSHEY’s KISSES Milk Chocolate
  • 1-1/3 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Mix all graham cracker crust ingredients (graham cracker crumbs, sugar and butter) in bowl and press mixture into mini muffin tins. Crust should be tight and compact.
  2. Bake at 350°F for 5 minutes.
  3. Unwrap all HERSHEY’s KISSES Milk Chocolate and cut all large marshmallows in half.
  4. Place one KISSES Chocolate's pointy side down into each graham cracker crust in your tin. Place an additional KISSES Chocolate on top, point side up.
  5. Place one marshmallow half on top of each right-side-up KISSES Chocolate, and place the tins back in the oven until marshmallow is golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Once out of the oven, use a toothpick to detach any marshmallow from the surrounding tin, and let treats cool for 10 minutes. (Allowing treats to rest enables them to set so the crust and treat won’t fall apart when removed from tin.)

The internet promptly lost its chill on Monday when the first official trailer for Marvel's upcoming Black Panther dropped. While we'd had a teaser to whet our appetites for the first solo adventures of Black Panther, the Wakandan king-turned-superhero we got a glimpse of in Captain America: Civil War, this first official trailer blew all our expectations out of the water.

The first official trailer promises — nay, ensures — that Black Panther will be unlike any other Marvel superhero film we've seen since the official extended and cohesive Marvel cinematic universe began more than a decade ago. Directed by Creed helmer Ryan Coogler and starring prominent actors Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan and, of course, the star himself Chadwick Boseman, it's clear Black Panther's story, vision and cast will bring this story to life in ways we never could have imagined.

Filled to the brim with action, we get a good idea of what to expect from this film: T'Challa, aka Black Panther, will return to his home nation of Wakanda following the death of his father. While there, he'll face off against weapons manufacturer Ulysses Klaue (played by Andy Serkis) and his vengeful ally, Erik Killmonger (Jordan). T'Challa will have to not only become Black Panther in order to protect his people, but he'll also come into his own as a superhero during this eventful time.

The trailer promises stunning visual effects, building out the Afrofuturistic world of Wakanda (which, in the comics, is a private and highly advanced nation — the most technologically advanced in the world) and showing us some great glimpses into the action sequences we can expect to revel in. It's pretty tough not to lose your cool when watching a trailer this vibrant and high-octane.

Needless to say, the internet fully and completely flipped for the trailer, with many making it plain through their well-crafted tweets and GIF choices just how much they were feeling this trailer.

Living Apart From My Partner Has Improved Our Sex Life

$

Last year, I visited a friend I don’t see often, and as we were getting ready to call it a night, she asked about my partner. I told her we were doing great. She asked if he was still living in a different state than I was, and I said he was. She asked if we were planning to move to the same city. I said no. When I asked her why she looked sad, she replied that she just wanted me to be happy. I said that I was, that living apart was our preferred arrangement — we were choosing it.

There is a name for people who are in a committed relationship but don’t live together by design. It’s called apartnership. Sharon Hyman, whose documentary about this subject is called Apartners: Living Happily Ever After Apart and has been living separately from her partner for almost 20 years, coined the term “apartner.” On the film’s website, Hyman cites the fact that up to 40 percent of Americans sleep in separate bedrooms and 10 percent live separately from their partners, and in the film, she explores why this is seen as such a taboo, why we’re so stuck on the myth that couples who don’t share a bed and/or a house are not as committed to one another.

More: 7 Reasons Alpha Women Have Better Relationships

My partner and I have been together for more than 10 years, and we’ve never lived together. When I say that, I mean, we’ve never consciously created a home with the intention of living in it with one another. We’ve spent months together, and at the end of that time, I return to where I live, and we can both go back to having our own spaces where we can make art. Our abilities to maintain our individual space is deeply important to both of us, and it’s contributed to the longevity of our relationship. Neither of us wants to have children, and we don’t feel the need to get married, so living together also isn’t something that’s urgent. If we do decide that we want to, we’ll talk about it, but as Hyman says in her piece for Psychology Today, “I feel that we are blessed to have the choice.”

In the time during which I’ve been in an apartnership, I’ve learned a few things. One is that sleeping with another person is difficult. It can be lovely, but it’s also something that needs to be discussed so it can be effective for everyone involved. It requires communication that might not be prompted in other situations, conversations about how much touching we would each like before and during sleep (i.e., if we were touching and I pulled away, it doesn’t mean I don’t like touching you, but that I need to be cold when I sleep and hugging generates too much heat).

Apartnership can mean that you put off working through issues that you might normally discuss if you were around one another more often. Or can it? You could argue that living together can lull folks into a sense of security and deescalate the situation depending on what it is. In other words, every relationship is different. I will say that my partner and I have addressed things like sex and money and long-term plans because they come up when we’re together.

Since we don’t live in the same city or the same house, how will we handle money when we are together, especially when it’s longer than a week? The same applies to sex — how often do we really want to have it? Have our needs and desires changed since the last time we saw one another? How do we want to spend the time we have face-to-face since we know that quality and quantity don’t necessarily equal one another? It’s also about seeing what we’re each like in times of transition, especially since for me, those can often trigger anxiety and depression, and figuring out how best to support one another through that.

More: 6 gadgets that change the game for long-distance relationships

Ultimately, whether or not apartnership is for you isn’t really the issue. It might be, or the desire to be apart might be a sign that your relationship isn’t in great shape. The point is you should have the option to explore what works for you and your partner and think about why it works without being told it’s bad and you’re wrong for conducting your relationship in this way. Apartnership for me has been a really healthy and genuine means of being with my partner, but it has to be right for both of you. Don’t fall for the notion that every relationship has to look the same way or else it isn’t “real.” As much as you can call your own shots, go for it.

What do you do when the entire world knows you've been dealing with severe morning sickness for weeks and is all up in your grill about how you supposedly don't look pregnant enough? Well, if you're full-time duchess — and full-time royal rock star — Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, you throw on a pink frock and dance on a train platform with Paddington Bear. Take that, trolls.

Yep, the former Kate Middleton, Prince William and Prince Harry all met up — and bonded — with Paddington Bear (who is, after all, almost as famous as they are) on Monday at London's Paddington Station. Because where else?

The event was a special reception for 130 children linked to the royals' charities, including organizations WellChild and Child Bereavement U.K., as well as kids who were affected by London’s terrible Grenfell Tower fire. Waiting for guests were an assortment of charming 1920s- and 1930s-style vintage British trains. Also in attendance was Paddington 2 star Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham from Downton Abbey, so also basically a royal himself) as well as Paddington 2 producer David Heyman. The film is set for a Nov. 10 release in the U.K.

Kansas-based photographer Tammy Karin never passes up an opportunity to capture a water birth. "The mother has this warm, protective barrier around her in which to bring her baby into the world," Karin explains. "She can receive help if wanted or needed, but it's almost like this wonderful force field that lends itself to this more hands-off environment."

Karin, a mom of three herself, adds that "the water birth stories that I have been honored to document have resolved with the most gentle entrances into the world for the baby. What's particularly special about photographing water births, according to Minneapolis-based photographer Jennifer Celine, is "seeing a moments-new baby emerge from the water in Mom and/or Dad's arms."

"Watching a mother's strength, beauty and sense of calm throughout her little one's birth is absolutely incredible," Celine adds.

The theory behind water birth, according to the American Pregnancy Association, is that "since the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother."

Advocates of water births highlight many benefits. It provides non-medicinal pain relief, may reduce blood pressure, promotes relaxation and helps the mother feel more in control during childbirth and labor. Water makes it easier to get into different positions because the buoyancy relieves some of the extra pregnancy weight, and this movement can help the baby to work its way down the birth canal.

While water birth remains controversial in some circles — the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that it is an "experimental procedure that only should be performed within the context of an appropriately designed clinical trial with informed consent" — hospitals are increasingly giving women the option of going through labor or even giving birth in a pool of warm water.

If you've ever wondered what a water birth looks like, these powerful images speak for themselves.

Kevin James Finally Addresses Kevin Can Wait Killing Off His TV Wife

Kevin Can Wait star Kevin James really can wait when it comes to responding to his sitcom's Season 1 controversy. After months of silence since news broke the show was killing off his character's wife, played by Erinn Hayes, James finally has an explanation for loyal viewers. Well, sort of.

More: A TV Death Is Bringing Kevin James & Leah Remini Back Together

The initial revelation that Hayes' character, Donna Gable, would be written off blindsided viewers. The show — which was the most watched comedy on broadcast TV during its freshman season — found itself on the receiving end of quite a bit of criticism when Hayes confirmed her character's death.

More: Scientology Is Starting a New Campaign to Smear Leah Remini

The news was made all the more confusing by the fact that it came merely a day after CBS announced James' former King of Queens co-star, Leah Remini, would be joining the cast as a series regular. Rumors quickly began to build that Hayes was ousted in order to bring Remini aboard full time, although any suggestion of such is unsubstantiated.

So, finally, after months of rampant speculation, James decided to address the casting shake-up directly.

"I get that people are like, 'Whoa, why would you do this?' But it really felt like a thing like this was needed for this show to drive forward," he told The Daily News. "Now, I have to deal with my daughter in a different way, and she's gonna go to college, or one's getting married, or the holidays. And it deals with things in a different, weightier way."

According to James, letting Hayes go was not a reflection on her talent as an actress. Rather, it was allegedly a necessary evil in the lifespan of the series.

"The plot of the show didn't have enough drive," James said. "If we got through a second season, I wouldn't see us getting through a third one. We were literally just running out of ideas."

More: Leah Remini Reveals Her Ulterior Motives for Aftermath Season 2

Remini, who played James' wife on The King of Queens from 1998 to 2007, has already settled into her role in Season 2 as Vanessa Cellucci — the ex-partner (and sometimes adversary) of James' character when he was on the police force.

While there are no official plans presently to create a romantic connection between the characters, Remini says she isn't ruling it out, either. "You have to at some point," she said. "It's not a 'no,' it's just there's so many episodes to do before that."

6 Ways to Unplug After Having a Baby

$

Be honest — did you laugh when you read that Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder were planning to take a "month of silence" after their baby was born? If this is news to you, they weren't planning to ignore each other for a month. "After the baby arrives, we’re doing one month of silence," said Reed. "Just the three of us, no visitors, and we’re turning off our phones too, so there’s no expectation for us to communicate."

But hold on a minute. Isn't unplugging after baby a pretty good idea? It's actually something that's been around much longer than everything we now need to unplug from. "The idea of unplugging for a month or more right after giving birth is an ancient one," explains doula Monique Cowan. "Many cultures practice a period of isolation that usually lasts about 40 days (or six weeks) postpartum. This time of isolation is all about the new mother. She is able to relax and be nurtured and nourished while she does the same for her new baby."

And it doesn't have to be an entire month of shutting out the world. In fact, despite their best intentions, Reed and Somerhalder didn't quite make it to a month of silence. Neither could resist sharing their new-parent excitement at daughter Bodhi Soleil's arrival on their respective social media accounts. But even taking a few days to get to know your newborn without any interruptions can be hugely beneficial. "Being a new parent can take a toll on one's mental and physical health," says Kimberly Hershenson, licensed clinical social worker. "It is a big change, and it becomes even more important to take care of yourself. Focusing on self-care and time bonding with your child/quality time with your partner will help make the transition easier."

More: 10 Postpartum Tips That Will Save Your Sanity

Here are six simple, effective ways to unplug post-baby.

1. Get naked

No pressure. We're talking G-rated nakedness here. Specifically, skin-to-skin contact with your newborn. "So many moms come to me asking what can I do to be successful at breastfeeding," says doula Liza Maltz. "Provided there are no underlying issues, I say relax! Lay back and enjoy this precious time of skin-to-skin and rest." Even better, Maltz is totally giving you permission to binge on Netflix (although that does contradict the whole "unplug" attempt). "Get cozy in bed and watch all the shows you’ve been saving up while snuggling skin-to-skin," she says. "Your body will thank you. This time after birth is so crucial for mom-and-baby bonding and breastfeeding." Of course, this advice is just as applicable for formula-feeding moms.

2. Make time for family time

It's important to have "alone, together" time in those early days. "Plan time with just you, your baby and partner to do something you enjoy," says Hershenson. "Go for a walk in the park, to the zoo or a museum. Enjoy your time together as a family without feeling the need to invite others to join you." If you plan to keep guests to a minimum, Cowan suggests letting friends and family know as soon as you make that decision. "I make cute cards for my clients to send to their friends and family with a poem that lets them know how loved and valued they are and simply asks that they allow bonding space for parents and baby," she says.

More: 10 Newborn Items You Should Never Buy New

3. Do your own thing

Bonding with your baby is important, but you have to make time for yourself too. Hershenson suggests having a simple morning self-care routine — something you can do every day without fail. "Whether it's going to the gym, having your daily coffee while reading the newspaper or stretching for 10 minutes, doing something just for yourself every day is crucial for your mental well-being after having a baby," she says.

4. Yoga with baby

Combine relaxation and baby bonding by practicing yoga with your little one. You don't need to leave the house: Hershenson suggests checking out YouTube videos for parent-and-baby yoga. Make this part of your morning routine or something you can rely on whenever you need to de-stress. According to Karma Kids Yoga, the practice of yoga asanas can improve babies' sleeping patterns; relieve gas, colic and constipation; and help develop gross and fine motor skills.

5. Go offline, literally

Yes, so far we've suggested Netflix and YouTube yoga videos. But if you really want to unplug post-baby, you've got to take a technology break. Turn off the TV, computer and cell, and enjoy family time free from digital interruptions. "Technology stimulates the brain, causing our minds to stay active and unable to wind down," explains Hershenson. "Turning off technology allows us to slow down and be present."

To keep phone calls to a minimum, advanced planning is key. "Your phone can be set to various settings, from airplane mode to blocking numbers not in your contact list," says Cowan. "It may also be helpful simply to let your 'village' know that you will only be responding to texts and emails on certain days of the week. Leave a cute voicemail response or set your email to an auto-response, letting everyone who contacts you know that you are currently enjoying family time."

6. Ask for help

It's great to focus on your newly expanded family, but letting other people in can make postpartum life a lot easier. The key is to do it on your terms. "Let the laundry go," says Maltz. "Don’t worry about entertaining. Guests can help themselves — and they can help you too. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Instead of (another!) blanket, ask for meals."

More: 12 Baby Hacks Every New Parent Needs to Know

All in all, your unique approach to "unplugging" in new-parent life is yours — and yours alone. "It is a good idea to unplug in the first days or weeks after baby is born, and having limited times of being connected can be helpful, but it does not have to be a total blackout," says La Leche League leader Leigh Anne O'Connor. "Many parents do need a lifeline — a select group of helpful people to reach out to. Perhaps one parent can be the 'gatekeeper' to the outside world?"

Whether you love the idea of going completely tech-dark after your baby is born or hope to simply cut back on socializing, the most important takeaway is not to stress about it. The last thing you want is to beat yourself up for not doing things the way you originally planned.

From Refinery29, we know that Drew’s Honeymoon House will be a family affair with Scott and his twin brother, Jonathan, joining in on the renovations of a recently purchased Los Angeles home. Since the 3,400-square-foot home was built in the 1920s, there are sure to be a few issues surrounding the restoration.

According to HGTV, “Drew finds the home, Jonathan designs it and Linda oversees the decorating.” It sounds pretty cut and dry, right? It will be great to see each family member play to their strengths (some of which we've seen before on Property Brothers), but it's also really heartwarming to see the whole family coming together for this super-special project. Of course, the pressure is on because the talented family needs to finish the construction in time for the engaged couple to throw a pre-wedding celebration in the new house.

The Scott twins are always up to some sort of shenanigans; with Phan joining the team, it will be fun to not only get to meet the newest member of the Scott family, but also see what kind of design eye she brings to the team. It sounds like she’s ready for it, because HGTV is promising that she will "don a tool belt, wield a hammer, and work side-by-side with Drew and Jonathan during each step of the renovation."

The rest of the twins’ family will also be jumping into the mix for the series, so expect appearances from their parents, Jim and Joanne, along with their big brother, J.D. It’s the exact type of zaniness fans would expect from the entire Scott clan.
