Can Kids Benefit From Instability?

$
0
0
Conventional wisdom says that you shouldn’t disrupt a child’s life any more than is absolutely necessary. Keep them at the same school with the same kids for at least elementary. Put them on recreational sports teams with those same kids. Maintain routines to make life go smoother. And God forbid your family ends up moving or going through a divorce. But is all this sameness actually good for our children?
Is it possible that by striving for stability we're sending entirely the wrong message? In seeking to give our children smooth lives, we may be leaving them unprepared for adulthood — when change, disappointments and setbacks are inevitable.

What is resiliency?

It's the ability to handle difficult circumstances — and thrive despite them. It's how quickly you bounce back from life’s setbacks and disappointments: not making the team, getting a D on a test or getting fired from your first job. Children and adults who aren’t resilient can spend weeks or months recovering from life’s normal disappointments. That’s time that could be spent moving on — or finding another great opportunity. When we instill resiliency in our children, we’re giving them a key skill that will help them navigate life now and when they're 40 years old.

What are the signs that your kid isn’t developing it?

According to Dr. Ken Ginsburg, the director of the Center for Parent and Teen Communication and author of numerous books on resiliency in children, there are three signals — irritability, regression and bodily signs — that may indicate that your child isn't developing this skill adequately.
Ginsburg urges parents and caregivers to watch out for irritability or sadness that isn’t tied to an event. If your teen failed a quiz today, that's one thing; if their doom and gloom lasts weeks, that's another. Regression, such as thumb-sucking or wetting the bed, can — but doesn't always — indicate that a child isn't bouncing back from daily difficulties. Bodily symptoms such as headaches and stomachaches can also be signs that kids' bodies are absorbing stress. If these symptoms aren’t always related to a specific event (such as a temper tantrum over a toy you wouldn’t buy), Ginsberg says they can indicate that a child isn’t building resiliency.
So, what can you do about it?

How can you help?

Don’t be afraid to allow change into your kid’s life. If you’ve been agonizing over whether or not to enroll them in a new school that better meets their needs, go for it. Do they have the chance to participate in a different after-school activity, one that would develop their skills — but they don’t want to do it without their friends? Make the call. Don't worry; life will naturally create plenty of disruptive circumstances. You don't necessarily have to go searching for them.
And if change doesn't happen naturally in your family's lives, ask yourself why. It’s easy to fall into a rut — traveling to the same places, enrolling your kid in the same activity year after year. Maybe it’s time to see if there’s something better out there? If the change has real, long-term positive benefits, don’t avoid it. Be there for your child, support them through the positive change, and continually communicate to them that they’ll be fine.

Remember: Model your belief that they can take care of themselves

When my kid runs into the house and screams, "Mommy!" I'll ask, "Is there blood?” If he says no, and I can see that he's fine, I'll shrug and tell him to "figure it out."
Callous? Not so, says Ginsburg. “If a parent intervenes in the small puddles of life, the kid hears the message that the parent doesn't think the kid can handle it.” When kids are faced with bumps on the road of life, Ginsburg advises parents to — within the bounds of safety, of course — just step out of the way.
If a child feels shaken, they’ll look to their parent or caregiver for reassurance that they will be OK. Once you, as the adult, have given them that security, you don’t need to over-worry, overprotect or try to shield them from further disappointment. In fact, doing so can produce anxious children who think there’s no room for error in life — and who fall apart at the first sign of adversity.
Our goal as parents isn’t just to get kids through childhood alive and in one piece (though, some days, that can feel like a major accomplishment); it's also to shape them into adults who can meet life’s challenges. So the next time life hands your kid the chance to take a risk, switch it up or (figuratively) fall flat on their face — let them. They’ll not only survive; they may be better for it.

We've Got DOOL Spoilers About Allison Sweeney's Big Return

Lucas Horton has fallen off the wagon, due to his break up with Adrienne - who he has no idea is really Bonnie Lockhart. Not even a vision from Lucas' deceased son Will, pleading with his father to let his loved ones help him, was enough to bring him out of his drunken stupor. Chandler Massey will be back on the scene and not just as a figment of Lucas' imagination. The actor revealed that there will be a plausible explanation for Will's return, which will have an effect on Sonny and Paul's romance. And with Alison Sweeney returning to Days of our Lives Friday October 13 for a two month stint, things are bound to get emotional during the quest to help Lucas.

More: Why Eileen Davis Really Left RHOBH

Actor Bryan Dattilo talked to SoapHub about some of his and Sweeney’s past emotional storylines and how he looks forward to working with her again. “I’m really excited about that, too. I miss her. At first, I wondered, ‘Am I going to have the chance to work with her?’ Then, to find out we were going to have some stuff together was really cool. Alison’s so good at what she does. She’s so Sweeney. She’s just smart at what she does at work. She sees scenes in a lot of different ways. She’s a smart actor, and she’s also a smart director. She’ll be like, ‘Do you want to do this or this?’”

During the conversation with 'his vision of Will' at St. Luke's, Lucas made it clear to his son that though Sami will always hold a special place in his heart, together, they were a disaster. However, it's always during sad times when people ban together and somehow the mistakes of the past no longer matter and are replaced with new hopes for the future. Could this mean another chance for Lucas and Sami? We do know (teasers ahead) that the double wedding of Sonny and Paul, and Abigail and Chad is crashed by an unlikely person and whatever it is that person has to say ties in with this audition tape posted on Vimeo of Tim Abell of a character from Memphis who thinks he's Elvis Presley back from the dead. It sounds to us as though Will is alive, which means trouble in paradise for Sonny and Paul.

Thomas Rhett & Lauren Akins' Toddler Is Our New Favorite Hairstylist

Lauren Akins — wife of country music singer Thomas Rhett — had a little fun with her Instagram followers, informing them that her new shorter hairstyle was the handiwork of the couple's almost-2-year-old daughter, Willa Gray.

“Willa Gray got into my scissors this morning," Akins captioned a shot of herself holding her toddler, who's clutching a chopped-off blonde ponytail — and a lollipop. But in case any toddlers reading this are getting excited about replicating these results, sorry. Akins was just joking. "Haha jk. We just had a day date at @thedryhousenashville and Ali chopped over a FOOT off my hair #mamaneededlesshair #ifeelfreeeeeee," Akins added. She plans to donate her lopped locks to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths campaign, which crafts real-hair wigs for women who are battling cancer and struggling with hair loss.

The Nashville salon, Dry House, also posted shots of Akins' hair transformation in a very sweet montage on their Instagram feed.

We love the new look and the reason behind it — and we're only slightly disappointed it's not actually Willa's handiwork (what a prodigy she would be!). Frankly, we're pretty amazed that Akins found time to get her hair cut at all. She and Rhett are still adjusting to family life with not one, but two new daughters. In May, they adopted Willa Gray from Uganda, and on Aug. 12, Ada James was born. Meanwhile, Rhett's been working overtime with a promo schedule, so the official family motto (according to Rhett in an interview with People) is currently "Take it one day at a time."

Akins even managed to take both daughters to one of Rhett's concerts — and surprised him by leading both girls onstage, much to the delight of the audience. (Honestly, can more stars bring their kids onstage during shows? No?)

Just a few days ago, Akins posted a family photo on Instagram, and her caption said it all: "our happy (& tired, but mostly happy) little family (puppies not pictured but they're happy too)."

Rhett said, "It's not like there ever is a perfect time to have kids, or a perfect time to put out a record. We just happen to be doing both at the exact same time!" Ah, country music. Who knew it inspired such multitasking?

As if we weren't already excited that Law & Order: SVU is returning in a week with the new season, we now have even more to look forward to on the show.

More: Law & Order: SVU Proves Fake News Can Have Very Real Consequences

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Sam Waterston will reprise his role as Jack McCoy for an episode in Season 19.

Waterston played Jack on the original series Law & Order for fifteen seasons before the show was cancelled in 2010. Since SVU's inception, Waterston has appeared on the show three times prior to the latest guest appearance announcement this week. But he hasn't been seen in the franchise since Law & Order was cancelled. His last appearance on SVU was back in 2010 on Season 11 Episode 21.

It seems like it was all about timing for Waterston. Once SVU showrunner Michael Chernuchin took over the show in May 2017, he has made it his mission to connected the Law & Order universe. Waterston is just the latest in a long list of much-needed guest appearances including prosecutors Connie Rubirosa (Alana De La Garza) and Michael Cutter (Linus Roache).

No word yet how Jack will factor into the storyline in the new season, but you can bet it's gonna be good.

Demi Lovato made it clear on Twitter today she doesn't owe anyone an explanation about her sexual preferences.

Lovato's sexuality became a point of speculation when she released her hit, "Cool for the Summer," in 2015, which many thought alluded to Lovato's desire to hook up with a woman. Since then, she has declined to comment on her preferences and, apparently, that has made some people... upset.

Lovato expanded on her thoughts on keeping her sexuality to herself in a recent interview with Pride Source, "I just feel like everyone's always looking for a headline and they always want their magazine or TV show or whatever to be the one to break what my sexuality is," Lovato explained. "I feel like it's irrelevant to what my music is all about. I stand up for the things that I believe in and the things that I'm passionate about, but I like to keep my personal life as private as possible when it comes to dating and sexuality and all that stuff just because it has nothing to do with my music. Unfortunately, we live in a world where everyone is trying to get that soundbite and I am purposefully not giving the soundbite."

Tom Cruise Might Be Partially Responsible for the Death of Two Pilots

Two pilots were killed during the filming of Tom Cruise's latest film, American Made. Now, the actor is facing accusations that he is partially responsible for the deaths.

More: Leah Remini Says Tom Cruise Could Be the End of Scientology

The plane crash happened in 2015 while American Made was being filmed in Colombia. People reports a plane carrying three pilots went down in the mountains. Alan Purwin and Carlos Berl were killed while the third pilot, Jimmy Lee Garland, suffered injuries leaving him without feeling in the lower half of his body.

Now, the families are suing the production, but specifically pointing to negligence by director Doug Liman and film star Cruise. The lawsuit alleges the ariel shots the pilots were asked to complete were risky, paired with long hours and improper prep work before the shots were attempted.

According to the court document, "The demands of filming in Colombia, together with Cruise’s and director Doug Liman’s enthusiasm for multiple takes of lavish flying sequences, added hours to every filming day and added days to the schedule."

More: Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx Risk an Encounter With Tom Cruise in Paris

The document further alleges, "Lapses in planning, coordinating, scheduling, and flight safety that were the Defendants’ responsibility resulted in an unqualified and unprepared pilot being pressed into service for a dangerous flight in a vintage aircraft across an unfamiliar mountain pass in bad weather."

Ahead of his death, Purwin reportedly wrote in an e-mail that American Made was "the most dangerous project I’ve ever encountered."

Even more damning for the production, one of the executive producers sent a letter to the insurance company with a formal complaint against Cruise and Liman.

"DL [Director Liman] and TC [Cruise] [are] adding entire scenes and aerial shots on the fly. Had to bring in Uni Safety to help wrangle them. In the last 48 hours this has become the most insane s— I’ve ever dealt with," the letter read, according to the lawsuit.

After beating breast cancer 25 years ago, Olivia Newton-John found out in May that she faced a second round. This morning on Today, the singer and actor discussed her health and the fact that medicinal cannabis was instrumental in her recovery.

At first, she thought the discomfort she was experiencing was sciatica — especially since it was painful for her to walk. In reality, her breast cancer had returned, and this time spread to her lower back. Newton-John was on her North American tour at the time of her diagnosis and still taking the stage despite her pain.

"I was still performing. I would kind of a grit my teeth and take a couple of aspirin and go on,” she told Natalie Morales. When she started radiation on her sacrum — the triangular bone in the center of the lower back — she could barely walk.

Newton-John described her treatment program, which combined traditional medical care with natural remedies like meditation and medicinal marijuana, which she said played an integral part in her recovery.

“People have this vision from the '60s of people just sitting around, you know, getting stoned. It's not about that. This plant is a healing plant,” she said. "Because I think we need to change the vision of what it is. Because it helped me greatly. And it helps with pain and inflammation."

In addition to speaking out about her treatment and recovery, Newton-John is also working to ensure that others are able to get the same level of care by raising money to keep the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia, up and running and funding research for clinical trials.

Gwyneth Paltrow may be a superstar, but she still has as many hours in the day as us normals. And that means making some tough decisions when it comes to how she wants to spend her time. Even as the actor is in the midst of filming the next Avengers installment, she knows where her heart truly lies: with her lifestyle brand, Goop.

Paltrow has some big plans for Goop in the near future, and they're going to demand a lot of her time.

"We want to take Goop international," Paltrow recently told The Hollywood Reporter. "We have a lot of key hires to make. And we are looking to open another store."

If you think that sounds like a lot of work, you're right. That's also what THR thought, which is why they asked Paltrow how all her big plans for Goop might interfere with her acting career, which is still going strong. Her response? That Goop is definitely her top priority.

Still, with that said, Paltrow isn't ready yet to give up acting altogether.

"Honestly, I was on set and thought, 'You sit here for two hours sipping tea, Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle are making me laugh hysterically — why the hell did I give this up?'" she said.

8 Anal Foreplay Tips You Need to Know

$
0
0

Oftentimes, couples overlook anal foreplay when it comes to their sex lives. But many people don’t realize how pleasurable anal foreplay can be.

“One might assume that their partner isn’t into the idea of anal play due to the cultural stigma in regard to anal sex, that it is hygienically dirty or that play means full penetration is what the partner actually wants and that would hurt,” says Dr. Kat Van Kirk, a licensed marriage and sex therapist and author of The Married Sex Solution: A Realistic Guide to Saving Your Sex Life.

But couples should give anal foreplay a try because it feels good. There is nothing wrong or taboo about feeling good so long as you are safe and consensual. So whether you're you’re new to anal play or experienced, here are eight hot tips to make anal play a lot steamier.

More: 6 Positions That Make Anal Sex Easier & Less Intimidating

1. Have a vaginal orgasm first

Women might find it helpful to have an orgasm first or at least have lots of foreplay before experimenting with anal play, suggests Stacy Rybchin, founder and CEO of My Secret Soiree and My Secret Luxury. “This helps to relax the body, including the muscles of the anus, which automatically clench when we’re stressed, self-conscious, rushed or uncomfortable.”

2. Massage the butt

An erotic massage is a good way to loosen up the receiver. With light squeezing and rubbing, work your way from the cheeks to right around the anus. This will help both of you relax.

3. Anal play does not have to mean anal penetration

Many people think that anal play means penetration, but it doesn’t. Anal play can be simply stroking, tickling, licking or vibration at the entrance of the anus or on the butt. You can use anything from fingers and feathers to vibrators. But if you’re new to penetration, go slow.

More: How I Overcame Sexual Dysfunction After Having a Baby

4. Lube up

Unlike the vagina, the anus does not make any of its own lubrication. “We prefer anal lubricant, which is thicker than regular water-based lubricant but still feels wet. We always recommend thicker anal lubricant because it protects you from harmful bacteria and helps with a more comfortable experience,” says Rybchin. She suggests Sliquid Sassy Lubricant, which provides extra protection.

5. Fingers first

“Get used to the sensation by fingering around the rim and perineum. And don’t forget the clitoris. Attention to the clitoris either with a sex toy or fingers will help her relax into it,” says Van Kirk.

6. Anal sex toys could be the way to go

But work your way up with regard to both length and girth. “Anal plugs are great because these toys are hands-free, so they allow you to use your hands in other ways. Butt plugs can be combined with all kinds of sexual play, including vaginal intercourse, masturbation and oral sex,” says Rybchin. Just make sure the toy can be easily retrieved.

7. Shower together

Before, during or after could make anal play more appealing and satisfying for one or both of you. While hygiene shouldn’t be an issue, mentally, cleaning each other and touching this area in the shower may make it easier to get turned on and ready for the possibility of penetration.

8. Communicate with your partner

Like with most everything in relationships, make sure you and your partner are communicating throughout the entire experience. Whether something feels good or hurts, let them know. Tell them to stop, slow down or speed up depending on how it feels.

Holliday is a mom to two sons, Rylee, 11, and Bowie, who's 15 months old. We're not about to disagree. Watch her delightfully candid video below.

Holliday gushed that the high point of parenting is "when they smile... that joy it brings you, it's incredible." The bodily fluids, well, she can't even. "The worst... even when they get older, it's just so much!" Truth.

Kim Kardashian West Opens Up About Miscarriage Scare

Despite her glam lifestyle, perfect contouring and mega-famous butt, life has not always been fabulous behind the scenes for Kim Kardashian West. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has spoken candidly about her challenging pregnancies and the painful, scary condition of placenta accreta that plagued both deliveries (and required a doctor to scrape her placenta out of her uterus by hand after she gave birth — *shudder*). Kardashian West also suffered from preeclampsia in her first pregnancy with North.

Now we're finding out more about just how brutal her first pregnancy was in a soon-to-air Keeping Up with the Kardashians 10th Anniversary Special (oh, how time flies). In the special, Kardashian West recounts her initial plan to freeze her eggs after one fertility specialist warned her that pregnancy might not be easy for her. Soon after that, Kardashian West discovered she was "randomly" pregnant — and she was utterly terrified.

"I remember calling [Kanye] and he thought a family member of mine had died, I was so hysterical," Kardashian West said in the TV special. "I thought my life was over, that I was pregnant and [it was going to be] so hard for me."
The show also reveals previously unaired footage of Kardashian West struggling to manage horrific abdominal pain throughout that pregnancy. "At one point, I thought I had a miscarriage. I was pretty certain about it," she said. When she went to see a doctor, he broke the news to her: "There's no heartbeat. You had a miscarriage." The next morning, however, they tried again to hear a heartbeat — and this time, it was audible.
"I was like, 'Oh, my God!' It was an such an emotional Thanksgiving," Kardashian West said in the special. And now, after many scares and other health issues, Kardashian West and husband Kanye West are expecting their third child via a surrogate; sources say it's a baby girl, due in January 2018.
We're hoping the surrogate's pregnancy is a breeze — and that we'll soon have more updates on the countdown to the latest heir to the Kardashian-West dynasty.

10. "Does he hit you?"

Barbara Walters 1

Barbara Walters 1

In one of Walters' most controversial interviews, she sat down with boxing champ Mike Tyson and his then-wife Robin Givens. As the couple sat next to each other, Walters asked Givens point-blank if the rumors about Tyson being abusive were true. "He shakes. He pushes, he swings. Sometimes I think he's trying to scare me. There were times when it happened when I thought I could, after, handle it, you know. And just recently, I've become afraid. I mean, very, very much afraid," Givens revealed. While asking the question in front of Tyson could have incited his rage toward Givens, it was a move that paid off. One week later, Givens got the courage to file for divorce.

9. "What kind of a tree are you?"

Barbara Walters 2

This could go down in history as one of Walters' most comically offbeat questions. So why does it make the list? First, the moment wasn't nearly as awkward as it was made out to be. Second, it's an iconic minute in the annals of Walter's life. What the question really spoke to was Walters' ability to spin questions on a whim and her talent for listening to her subjects. In the interview, Katharine Hepburn mentions to Walters that she sees herself as a tree. Hence the "What kind of tree are you, if you think you're a tree?" question. Incidentally, Hepburn totally got the line of questioning and said she'd be an oak.

8. "Do you think women can rule?"

Barbara Walters 3

A mere two years before Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown, Walters interviewed him in 1977 at his palace in Iran. Proving she's a woman with some serious grit, Walters asked him if he believed a woman could rule. He said women lack men's intelligence and abilities, but his wife seemed resistant on this point. When Walters asked the wife what she thought, she responded, "I don't think you really believe that. But what have men done to the world, really?"

7. "Describe yourself."

Barbara Walters 4

An unprecedented 74 million people tuned in to see what Bill Clinton's ex-mistress would say about the infamous affair. Although Walters did get in a few questions about the "sexual relations," she also asked a question no one else had taken the time to ask up until that moment: for Monica Lewinsky to describe herself. She used the time to apologize to the Clinton family, especially Hillary and Chelsea.

6. "Have you ever ordered anyone killed?"

Barbara Walters 5

Barbara Walters 5

One thing's for certain — no one can accuse Walters of being a pushover. No matter who her interview subject was, Walters asked the questions we all wanted to but would likely be too afraid to ask. The first American journalist to interview Russian president Vladimir Putin, Walters cut to the chase and asked Putin directly whether or not he had ever ordered anyone killed. "Nyet" was his response.

5. "Do you think men should be the dominant figure in a relationship still?"

Barbara Walters 6

Barbara Walters 6

Walters has always had a special way of bringing people out of their shells, and Western screen star John Wayne proved no different. Never one to mince words, Walters asked Wayne about seemingly sexist statements he'd made about men and dominance. "Well, if this country had stayed the way it was, and if we hadn't made it so tough for a family to keep up their type of living [that] their wives had to go to work, I would think it would be more pleasant. I think it's be more pleasant for the lady as well," Wayne said. Later in the interview, he alluded to a higher power being a man or a woman. It was a rare glimpse at the more pensive side of a man known to be of few words.

4. "Do you think O.J. Simpson is guilty?"

Barbara Walters 7

Barbara Walters 7

In 1996, Walters did what every single one of us who'd been following the Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman homicide headlines for months wanted to do: grill Robert Kardashian to see what his real thoughts were about his BFF-slash-former-client, O.J. Simpson. And because Walters has an uncanny way of getting people to let their guard down, Kardashian responded honestly, saying, "I have doubts."

3. "What would convince you to run in 2016?"

Barbara Walters 8

Barbara Walters 8

The next time Walters makes a prediction, you might want to take notice — 'cause she was spot-on when it came to interviewing former FLOTUS Hillary Clinton. "What would convince you to run in 2016?" Walters asked Clinton. "You know, that's all hypothetical, because right now I have no intention of running," Clinton responded. However, as we all now know, Clinton did make a presidential bid after all. She may not have won the election, but the fact that she ran was empowering to women everywhere.

2. "What do you sing?"

Barbara Walters 9

Barbara Walters 9

In what may be the cutest interview Walters has ever done, Walters asked Bill Gates what he sings to get his baby to fall asleep. The question, although odd, wasn't totally out of left field. Earlier in the conversation, Gates confessed he and his wife had been taking singing lessons. Then the biggest surprise of all — billionaire Bill Gates began singing an impromptu version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star."

1. "Do you think [being blind & deaf] happened to you for a reason?"

Barbara Walters 10

Barbara Walters 10

Robert and Michelle Smithdas aren't huge Hollywood celebs. In fact, they aren't really celebs at all. Rather, they are a married couple, and both are both blind and deaf. During the interview, Walters asks Robert, who'd never seen his wife before, to describe her. "First of all, she is petite and rather delicate, very delicate bone structure." She then turned her attention to Michelle, asking if she felt as though her being blind and deaf happened for a reason. "No, I do not question it," she replied. "I should say that I am rather happy for what I am able to do and for what I have." Now there's the truth we all needed to hear!

People Think Rachel Lindsay & Bryan Abasolo Are Faking Their Engagement

Some people (ahem, Wendy Williams) clearly didn't tune in for the last season of The Bachelorette. Leading lady Rachel Lindsay and her fiancé, Bryan Abasolo, appeared on Williams' show this week, and they had a heck of a time convincing the host that they're actually in a real relationship.

The first sign of Williams' skepticism came when she asked Lindsay if they've set a date yet.

"I'm thinking next year. Fall of next year. Maybe the winter. We're not going to rush it," Lindsay replied, to which Williams said, without missing a beat, "Because you rushed the engagement." Brutal.

Lindsay talking about the pressure she felt being the first black woman to helm the show also got a salty reaction from Williams.

"It was like, how do you turn down the opportunity to represent yourself as an African-American woman in a positive way when we've been so underrepresented in this franchise? And to find love?" Lindsay said.

Williams replied, "No, you had a chance to be in TV and on every magazine is what I'm thinking." Ouch.

Lindsay even offered Williams an invitation to the wedding, which, bless her, because if I were in Lindsay's place, I'd have been throwing punches by then.

While Williams has her doubts, Lindsay and Abasolo revealed they're taking the next big step in their relationship very soon: They're moving to California together. They didn't reveal why they chose California for their shared home since neither of them is from the Golden State, but the internet already has its theories. Their proximity to Hollywood must mean there's a spinoff series in the works, right?

The First-Time Mom Whose IVF Experience Wasn’t Easy

In our new series Pregnancy Diaries, we ask expecting women to jot down every pregnancy-related detail of their lives for a week. (Special thanks to New York mag and Refinery29 for the inspo.) Work-related conundrums, struggles with IVF and a whole lot of nausea ahead. This week, we have a 32-year-old advertising sales exec based in NYC who’s 34-1/2 weeks pregnant with her first child. She and her husband chose to genetically test their embryos via IVF for a rare genetic disorder — and it paid off.

My husband and I returned from our honeymoon excited to jump off the pill and jump into making a baby. I’m Jewish, and while I like to consider myself a Type A hippy, I went to the doctor to ask 101 questions before trying to conceive. I wanted to be taking the appropriate vitamins well in advance and do genetic testing prior so that we had no surprises. Being Jewish, Tay-Sachs was the real genetic disorder most are looking for, and when you get married, your rabbi will likely give you pamphlet to properly scare you.

Shortly after my appointment, I learned we were a match for FMF, a super-common, not life-threatening auto-inflammatory disease. The way it was described was it could feel like absolutely nothing or the child could have fevers running 104-plus, joint pain and need medication and dietary restrictions for the rest of his/her life. Is this happening? I felt stuck. The only opportunity to avoid this was to genetically test my eggs via IVF. IVF??? I never ever tried naturally, and they mentioned these words. We sat on the decision for two months speaking to doctors. Some thought we were crazy for wanting to do IVF for something so minor, while others who had patients with FMF said, "If you can avoid this, why wouldn’t you?" We spoke to pediatricians and genetic counselors and made an appointment with an IVF clinic to understand the process and evaluate.

After two months, we received an email that in 2016, IVF would be 100 percent covered under our insurance. That was the only email I needed and I never looked back. We started IVF. It was not a black and white process. While I was lucky and received eight beautiful embryos, four were affected with the genetic disorder — leaving us with four embryos. After waiting four months to build a probe to test for the disorder in a lab (we needed blood from all four of our parents, which were fun phone calls to make) my first transfer was canceled due to my lining not being thick enough and my body didn’t want medication (shocker). We’re not five months out from starting this process, which felt like 12 years.

We tweaked our efforts and I did a “natural” transfer the following month working off my natural ovulation. I went in every other day to track this so my life was mornings in the clinic. Lo and behold, the second transfer stuck! We kissed, skipped while walking, and that was it. Two days later, we get a call that my numbers dropped, and I had a “chemical” pregnancy and lost the embryo. That’s when I panicked. I started the process in January. After blood tests, waiting on labs, etc., here we are with no answers — almost seven months into the process and no explanation.

July came, and I was hopeful that the first was a common fluke, but no luck. Now we were worried that we might have a fertility issue and wondering if IVF was a horrible decision, so I took a month off, did rounds of testing, and went on a weekend retreat to relax. I refused to transfer one of the two we had left without understanding why the first failed. The only thing found was that I had a high level of “natural killer” cells. This was controversial, but meant that my immune system was seeing the embryos as foreign objects making them harder to stick. The solution was to take an anti-inflammatory drug and an IV every 2 to 3 weeks prior to the next transfer. It came with more risks, and now I was left weighing the pros and cons of IVF over risking FMF to begin with. At this point, we were all in, and I took the auto-inflammatory pill and IV treatment.

Come November, we did our third transfer with an embryo they said was the lowest grade and the weakest, but my husband and I had our eye on this one the entire time. It was the underdog and had to be thawed twice to get a proper reading on its genetics, and they contemplating disregarding this embryo. You must be your own advocate and call your own shots. Eight days after the transfer, we received a call that it stuck, but my levels again were so low that it would be incredibly rare if it carried through to a viable pregnancy. I can’t explain how the next 12 weeks went by — walking around thinking about how quickly I could — and probably would — lose the baby. But I didn’t! The embryo defied the 1 percent odd of survival. I even bled the entire first trimester, and here I am, eight months pregnant with a healthy baby boy. His embryo number was 14, so that’s our lucky number now. Our emails from our IVF doctor were beyond adorable (“GO 14 GO!”) the entire time. It was a journey to say the least.

Summary of my conception? Don’t put a date on your conception, never stop asking questions, and forget the world around you. This is your path, your timing, your child and family’s health, and whatever that path looks like it’s yours.

Day 1

6 a.m. — Husband is away on business, and I slept with the shades open to wake up with the sun, which is the easiest way for me to wake up right now. I felt famished and woke up on my back (which is a no-no, so I panicked a bit). I eased into the day with cereal with almond milk and a Liquiteria Coffee and Cacao smoothie, which has been my vice. Protein, a little caffeine, and it curbs appetite in a way I can’t describe. It’s magical.

9 a.m. — In the office, draped in a white Asos maternity dress in 75-degree heat. Feeling pretty good. Working on my maternity coverage document to ensure if I go early, my work world is still afloat. I’ve had many moments where I felt panicked and figured I need to stop thinking and start doing. My energy is a bit lower but still fully functional. I keep reciting my favorite quote: “Clarity comes from engagement” and powering through.

12 p.m. — Taking a 30-minute walk to a client lunch to get my body moving.

3 p.m. — Trying not to eat copious amounts of chocolate. I’ve been pretty good about my weight gain (I’m 5 feet tall) and don’t deprive myself, but I did sneak a bite. Drank water and Honest Tea to fill up and hydrate. My girlfriends warned me of what they call V-lightening, which I felt when getting up for a snack. You know it when you feel it — that’s for damn sure.

6 p.m. — Met a friend for a brainstorm for a new business idea. Staying social and most of the girls just get a kick out of seeing me pregnant. Surrounding myself with friends is super-helpful even on the days I want to crawl in a hole.

10 p.m. — Yeah right, good night. Read Richard Scarry to my babes and passed out cold.

"Husband comes home from work trip, but I’d be lying if I said I wish I had the king bed to myself for one more night…. "

Day 2

9 a.m. — Woke up to go head over to Latham Thomas Mama Glow prenatal workout class in downtown Tribeca. Summer Fridays never felt so good, and since I’ve only done Yoga Vida workout classes, which are more of a stretch, this one really kicked my butt and made me feel like I could move again.

12 p.m. — My real cravings have honestly been almond milk, anything with ice, chocolate and fruit. I know, not that interesting, but I’m constantly thirsty and never truly hungry. I snagged avo toast after the workout with a hard-boiled egg, but I honestly could have an icy smoothie for every meal.

3 p.m. — I got tired real fast and took a nice two-hour nap. They are becoming more frequent in this trimester, and I can’t function without them.

6 p.m. — Nighttime rolled around and my husband arrived home. We took a walk through the park to dinner. Per usual, I stared at the menu, wanted nothing, ordered out of pressure to do so and barely ate it. All I wanted was a tall glass of milk…. Go figure.

8 p.m. — Off to bed early, as this weekend is the last of the wedding circuit, and I’ve committed to a wedding at 8-1/2 months ripe and a bridal shower prior. Good news is I was looking forward to wearing my stretchy, bold red Asos maternity dress. I’ve always worn oversize frocks and dresses, but Asos has really been a savior here. Having the right outfit that’s comfortable yet attractive has kept me enjoying events like these. I tried to slip into a flowy Zimmermann number, but it was a complete fail and just wouldn’t lay right.

Day 3

9 a.m. — Red dress on, and out the door. I knew this was going to be a long day for me given I was attending the bridal shower as a bridesmaid and headed off to a wedding upstate directly from there. I didn’t drink my traditional morning smoothie (coffee, bananas, cacao, protein powder and almond milk) and I certainly paid for it. I was noshing on random snacks and never truly felt satisfied. I was a bit cranky to say the least. I spent the majority of the wedding chatting, answering questions on how far along I was and eating cake. One thing I always have room for is sweets. I was never a drinker prior to pregnancy, so it didn’t bother me being sober. I was more focused on how my tolerance for heels declined dramatically — as well as my ability to dance until the wee hours.

Day 4

9 a.m. — Typically my Sundays are far more pampering, with face masks, yoga and errands, but today was Father’s Day, and it’s certainly a special one. I drove home to see my dad and spend the day with my family and snagged a little gift for the soon-to-be dad. He was running low on work polos that he wears on more casual days, so matching light blue polo and one for our little guy on the way (monogrammed, an added perk).

3 p.m. — My dad put the car seat in the car. I’ve started to get a bit freaked that I could go into labor at any moment, as my sister-in-law gave birth at 29 weeks. Anything I can do to prep puts my mind at ease, although I know you can never truly prepare yourself.

6 p.m. — Driving home, car seat intact, 900 other items ran through my head, which I threw on the calendar to handle in the a.m. I look forward to work because I’m my most productive, surrounded by amazing women, and get so much done, which eases my mind in this home stretch.

Day 5

9 a.m. — Woke up ready to tackle the week and had a slew of meetings. I’ve certainly been moving slower than usual, but wrapping this up for my last three weeks at the office and weaning in some self-care has been my savior. I had my favorite Liquiteria Coffee and Cacao smoothie, gave up my work tote for my Céline crossbody for comfort and stopped carrying anything heavy. I refuse to eat lunch at my desk and went out for tomato and ricotta toast. Weaning in walks and good food is keeping the workdays lighter and more functional. Before heading home, I cleaned up our online registry a bit since I feel I’m coming close and I went nuts with the gun at BuyBuy Baby, a store that never crossed my mind in a million years — which I’ve come to learn is the end-all, be-all for this stage in life, but I had to go with the “less is more” strategy and will figure it out once Baby is here. Clutter and waste frightens me.

6 p.m. — After taking the pup for a walk through Washington Square Park, we stopped for dinner at Senza Gluten and ate outside. I jump at the chance to do things that I may not be able to do when Baby arrives. I scarfed down a caprese salad and pasta with mushrooms. Dessert these days is a must, so I try to keep it in check a bit (5 feet tall and pregnant is a challenge in itself). I had chocolate sorbet from Amorino. It’s even better than ice cream, I swear.

Day 6

6 a.m. — I haven’t been sleeping well. As a back and belly sleeper, the side sleeping isn’t cutting it. Some love the pregnancy pillows, and they do help, but it’s not the same. The lack of a solid night’s sleep has been one of the harder things to get used to. I was moving like a snail and took me awhile to get into things today.

12 p.m. — I took clients to mani-pedis and anyone even remotely touching my legs is a dream. I get charley horses on the regular. I don’t have many pain and aches, but between the sleep and leg tightness, I’d say those are my downfalls. I ended the day in an Epsom salt bath and went to bed early.

Day 7

9 a.m. – I woke up with a lot of energy and ready to tackle the day. It’s amazing what a warm bath and solid sleep will do for your headspace as well. I polished off my maternity-leave document, which is making it very real that I’ll be weaning out of the office and into this new life for the next three months/18 years/rest of my life, let’s be real.

12 p.m. — I was on fire getting work done, making calls and an out-of-the-office client meeting. I picked up lunch to eat back at the office and close out the day feeling like I accomplished more than I expected. I snagged a balsamic chicken and avo sandwich from Pret a Manger and ate at the office. One thing I legit can’t live without is anything with ice. I know I’ve said this earlier, but seriously, anything icy. I grabbed an enormous cup of ice at a deli for my Honest Tea half and half and sipped this on my walk back.

6 p.m. — I had all the intention in the world to head to prenatal yoga. (I set to go two to three times a week, but today I just took a pass and went home.)

7 p.m. — My husband was craving sushi, so I opted for a cooked shrimp roll. We’ve agreed the minute this little boy comes out, he’ll be running out to Sushi of Gari for the tuna assortment…I miss fatty tuna more than I can express. Headed off to bed, as my 35-week checkup is early in the morning and checking to see how this miracle No. 14 is doing.

Pregnant Kate Middleton Will Make First Public Appearance Post-Bed Rest

If you've been dying to see the former Kate Middleton's royal baby bump, you won't have to wait much longer. The official Twitter feed of Kensington Palace revealed yesterday that the duchess will be out and about to attend a reception on Oct. 10, World Mental Health Day. Mental health is a cause close to Kate's heart — and William's and Harry's. The royal trio frequently attends events to advocate for better care for those affected by mental illness.

Duchess Kate

Duchess Kate

The princess, er, duchess (whatever; sorry, England) has yet again been battling a vicious case of hyperemesis gravidarum. That may sound like a Harry Potter spell, but it's actually a particularly debilitating form of morning sickness — one you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy from Slytherin. Kate has suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum in her prior pregnancies as well. Poor thing.

And this time, she's been on bed rest for several weeks, so we're guessing she's even more excited about the prospect of being up and about again than we are about seeing her and her unavoidably chic maternity-wear. Of course, we've been picturing Kate convalescing elegantly in a massive antique canopy bed in a froufy high-necked white nightdress looking gorgeously wan, but we realize she's probably actually wearing a stained Ramones T-shirt and Will's boxer shorts, miserably sick while Charlotte and George bang on the bedroom door.

Anyway, mark your calendar for Oct. 10, get your Twitter fired up, and prepare for the onslaught of photographs of Kate's belly. We're thinking the wait will have been well worth it.

Please, get well soon, Kate. We miss you — and your Jenny Packham frocks — so much.

Yes, Your Period Can Affect STIs (& Vice Versa)

We often don’t think about the ways that menstruation and our sexual health are linked, but the two are connected in more than one way. In fact, they can play a significant role in our lives and vastly impact the symptoms that we may have during both menstruation and sex.

But aside from involving the same set of parts, how are they connected?

Menstruation can be a difficult time for many people. Along with the cultural stigmas that are all too familiar, those who menstruate can also experience a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, headaches, backaches and extreme pain and cramping. Of course, every person who menstruates has a different experience with varying symptoms, so how do you know what’s caused by a period and what is related to sexual health?

More: The questions a good gynecologist should (and shouldn't) ask

Sexually transmitted infections themselves run the gamut of symptoms and treatments. For instance, chlamydia and gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotics, while genital warts or herpes have symptoms that can be treated, but not cured. Understanding the range of symptoms that each STI can prompt as well as the social stigma that accompanies STIs as a whole make it easy to see why talking about STIs in relation to menstruation can fly under the radar. In many cases, patients may just not be bringing up the conversation with their primary physicians. There’s also a feeling of uncertainty about what is happening to their bodies that may also impact how forthcoming they are with their doctors.

“For people with herpes, some are more likely to have an outbreak during their period, though this isn’t true for everyone,” Christina Tesoro, a sex educator based in New York City, says. “Stress and diet can also impact outbreaks in people who have STIs,” But she also mentions that STIs aren’t the only things that can impact how an individual’s menstruation cycle functions.

Tesoro further explains, “If I’m dealing with something like bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection (which are not strictly STIs), I’ll have to be very careful about using tampons because I find them irritating, and patients have said to me that tampons seem to exacerbate symptoms and maybe change the pH of the vagina, which can exacerbate symptoms.”

More: 5 STDs that can threaten your fertility

Another important factor that may impact menstruation for individuals with STIs is that they’re unaware that they have an STI in the first place.

So exactly what warning signs should you look out for when it comes to distinguishing between your period and a potential STI? According to Tesoro, the blood from your period may not directly impact your STIs, but changes in the blood flow, your diet, stress, iron levels, etc. could be indicators that something is wrong.

“For STIs whose symptoms are discharge, it’s important that you know what discharge is normal,” Tesoro says. “Get to know your cycle and the quality of the discharge in your cycle," (Apps like Clue has ways to enter the quality of discharge.) If you keep track of that, then when you have abnormal discharge for you, you know that it’s not part of your normal cycle and you can go to the doctor.

More: Dating with STDs online and off

Because menstruation and STIs are impacted by different things, it’s hard to say specifically what symptoms one could have. But overall, it comes down to knowing your body and knowing that any abnormal change could be the result of an STI or the result of other significant changes in the body.

You may remember earlier this year when Game of Thrones star Lena Headey's Instagram was hacked, so fans had to move over to Twitter to keep up with her every move like we do with celebrities these days. Well, Headey's Instagram has been quietly back up and running, and she's been posting for months without any of us noticing. She just dropped a note about it on Twitter today, which obviously caused fans to flock to her Instagram and start stalking to see what they've missed.

Yes, back in March, Headey quietly and casually dropped that photo. You know, that photo that shows her insanely ripped dad just quietly grooming a horse in his underoos? What is even going on here? What is Headey doing? Does she realize what she's done?

Clearly not. She captioned the photo with just this: "My dad and the family horse circa 1970." So casual. Meanwhile, the whole internet has eyes trained on her dad's bulge. NBD.
