Timberlake Tuesday: Is Justin the most supah-fly stud ev-er?

Is it possible to fall more in love with the coy boy who dated Britney Spears and brought sexy back? Um, yeah. Justin Timberlake has been kicking personal and professional a** for months now. Here, we take a few moments to celebrate pop culture’s supah-fly JT…

Justin Timberlake

Sexy and funny

Give us an air-five if you still stoke up Justin Timberlake’s SNL skit “D*** in a Box” at Christmastime — it wouldn’t be the holidays without it. Christmas came a little early March 9 when Timberlake resurrected his Saturday Night Live“D*** in a Box” character on a dating game show, where he sang inappropriate answers to dating questions. There is a Santa Claus, and he loves us. This blessed event also marked JT’s induction to the “5 Timers Club” since this was his fifth time hosting. I think I speak for all of us when I say we hope there is a sixth, seventh, 20th JT hosted SNL. Our superhero also answered Kanye West for his jab at JT in his live performance. How come when Justin does it, it’s cool, and when other people, like Taylor Swift do it, it’s just kind of annoying?

Justin Timberlake

Mrs. Supah-fly

In case any other men questioned Justin’s super cool status, he crushed the male population when he married the freakishly hot, freakishly cheek-boned Jessica Biel. What is not to love about this couple? They’re young, hot and not riddled with scandal. They are how we picture ourselves to be when we’re in love, but we’re not. There is only one JT. And now, there is only one Mrs. JT. If there is anything to karma, Jessica must have been Gandhi in her last life.

Surprise SXSW appearance

Scheduling shows at the most off-the hook musical and multimedia event in the nation, South by Southwest, is for suckers. When you’re “the Timberlake” you swoop in for a show closer in an ultra cool warehouse that only seats 800 people. Then you and your “Tennessee Ten” wow the awed crowd with a mix of much loved classics and as-yet-barely released new stuff. This is one of many reasons we’ve already purchased our tickets to Austin, Texas, for March of next year.

The 20/20 Experience

Here again, our funk soul brothah takes something that may annoy us had it come from other artists — super long tracks and with an occasional hint of boy-band —and makes us swoon. When we listen to Justin’s latest musical feat, we start swaying our head to and fro, putting a hand in the air, and saying, “Ummm hmmm. That’s right. Bring it home, sunshine. That’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout. Yep. Momma wants a little more a dat.” Take a listen to our favorite snazzy dresser. You’re welcome. Happy Timberlake Tuesday.

Selena Gomez: Justin Bieber's a crybaby!

Selena Gomez is taking the upperhand in her breakup from Justin Bieber and bragging about making him cry!

Selena Gomez

It's rare that we gain true insight into celebrity breakups, but Selena Gomez gave us a pretty hilarious image of her breakup from Justin Bieber during an appearance with David Letterman on Monday night. According to the Spring Breakers star, Bieber is a crybaby!

The Late Show host asked Gomez about her breakup with the teen idol, saying, "Last time you were here, you were with a Justin Bieber. That's not going on now."

Gomez affirmed the breakup. "No, I'm single," she said. "I'm so good."

Letterman joked, "Now, the last time he was on, he and I got into a conversation and he said something and I said something, and then he said something and I said something, and I made him cry."

"Well then, that makes two of us," Gomez quipped.

Did Selena Gomez just call Justin Bieber a d-bag?>>

True insight? Joke? Either way, it's fun to imagine.

Bieber will be crying for sure when he sees Gomez's sexy turn in her racy flick Spring Breakers, which is gaining critical acclaim and giving the former Disney star a grown-up new image. The film, centered around a booze- and drug-fueled spring break trip to Florida, has some scenes one would not want to watch with one's parents — including a threesome — but Gomez said it was her mom who pushed her to take the role.

"She loves this kind of vibe," Gomez told E! News at the Spring Breakers premiere. "She's super into indie movies and indie directors… I think it was more of her pushing me and being like you should go for it."

Chef Fabio Viviani

Bon appetit, signores!

You may remember Fabio Viviani from the fifth season of Bravo's Top Chef. We sat down with the charming Italian chef and got the scoop on his new restaurant, his partnership with Quaker for women's heart health and his love for Texas barbecue.

It's no surprise Chef Fabio Viviani is an amazing cook. He's been on Top Chef, runs his own restaurants and shares recipes through his cookbooks and weekly email newsletter. And if that's not enough, he has the sexiest Italian accent! We chatted with Viviani about what he's been up to lately and got some inside info on his favorite foods and restaurants.

SheKnows: I'm sure you get asked this all the time, but can you tell us what adventures you've been up to since Top Chef?

Fabio Viviani: Oh… I was busy! So here's the deal. The restaurant business has been growing, I went into publishing, we did create an award-winning internet show, we got more TV projects and we are expanding the brand and associating ourselves with companies and other partners in order to enhance our customer experience and have additional products, you know? It's a big company right now.

I was in [the] business of restaurants… I had two restaurants before [the] Top Chef venture, and we were also working on other projects before that. So, Top Chef just exposed what I normally do, and [made] it a little bit more… create[d] a little bit more awareness of it. But I'm not doing anything different, really.

SK: Tell us about Siena Tavern. What's the concept?

FV: Yes, we're opening [a] few restaurants, actually. The first one we're going to open… is called Siena Tavern, and imagine… where are you from? Are you from Chicago?

Q&A

Check out our celebrity chef rapid fire with Fabio Viviani!

Favorite fellow celebrity chef:"Jaime Oliver."

Favorite casual restaurant in Chicago:"You're starting to be a little mean here. You can't pick that for one simple reason. Picking your favorite restaurant is like picking your favorite child. You know you have one, but if you say it, you're going to make everybody upset. OK, I gotta go with Yvette. And Gilt Bar, I gotta give you two."

Favorite fast food restaurant:"Not [big into] fast food, but when I want it, I go to In-N-Out."

Favorite food truck:"Anything Asian without cilantro. I hate cilantro."

Favorite cookbook:"My mom's recipe book."

Foodie guilty pleasure:"Nutella."

Food he hates: "Cilantro with all my heart. I know that hate is a big concept, but I really hate it. It goes beyond hate."

Favorite non-food-related show:"The Walking Dead."

Hobbies other than cooking:"Resting! And it became a hobby because I don't get to do it every day. I'm great in couch-sitting; I am great in bed-rolling… and pillow fights sometimes, but I've got to be in a good mood because that's too much of an activity."

SK: SheKnows is based in Arizona. I'm from Texas.

FV: Texas! God, I love Texas… I love barbecue. It's the best barbecue I ever had in Texas. You guys are amazing, I mean.

SK: Oh, yeah. Texans know how to do it. People in Tennessee will tell you they're the ones who know.

FV: They have a good one, but I'll take Texas over Tennessee. Don't say this to anyone. Tennessee has better whiskeys, though. We gotta say that.

SK: That's fair.

FV: But, yes, the concept of the new restaurant. It's rustic Italian meets modern Chicago. That's the concept. Traditional dishes served in a hustling and bustling environment. Wood beam meets stainless steel. Low-light meets flame out of the oven… It's gorgeous. I mean, if you weren't in Texas, you would totally be there tomorrow night.

SK: Sounds good!

FV: Sounds good to me, too, some barbecue, but… you're not getting Siena tomorrow night, and I'm not getting barbecue. That's not a good deal!

SK: Now we know you like barbecue! But what are your favorite items on your menu so far?

FV: Everything is made from scratch. I think we [outdid] ourselves with pizza. We do a lot of version[s] of it. Very healthy because we are using ancient grains to do so. The mill where we buy the flour is in Italy, still there, so it's like a very, very… it's a labor of love, so it comes out super light, we use the freshest ingredients, everything is made from scratch. So it is one of my favorite dishes. That and my mom's lasagna.

SK: Of course! You can't say anything bad about mom's cooking.

FV: Well, you can, but you might have a problem.

SK: True. Speaking of moms and women in general, you've partnered with Quaker Oats to support the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women. Can we expect to see any heart-healthy inspiration in your menu?

FV: Well, as an Italian restaurant, we are not going to be open for breakfast every morning, but we will have, starting soon, probably right after summer, we're going to have a great brunch. And since we're a firm believer that starting with the right food in the morning is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your health, there is going to be, definitely, oatmeal options.

At the end of the day, regardless of who I'm associated with and what the cause is [we're] behind, oatmeal is one of the American staples and everybody loves it. Now, Quaker happens to have [the] best version out there and is the one that people recognize the most.

And also, [we] did team up for the Go Red for Women movement, which is a great cause because we gotta take care of you guys. You know, what [kind of] world would it be without women? So with that said, yes, we're going to have great, healthy morning-inspired choices on our brunch menu, but we are not a breakfast place, so we're going to integrate healthy Italian food with the American flair that you guys are seeking for breakfast, but again, it's not going to be a breakfast restaurant.

But again — regardless of me, regardless of Quaker — this is a great initiative. This is something people should be aware of. Because at the end of the day, we all like good food, we all like tasty stuff, but tasty and healthy doesn't necessarily go together all of the time. So the thing [is], we need to reinvent a little bit of the breakfast to offer you one option that within 10 minutes a day can make your health [better]. So, that's important.

You know, at the end of the day I'm a chef, so I'm all about tasty, but I'm Italian, as well, so the philosophy of you being true to your body is very well [ingrained] in me. And if I can share that with you and with everybody out there that's willing to help with this movement, that's a good thing…

SK: Since your restaurant's in Chicago, let's switch gears a bit and talk about how our readers can get your cooking without a plane ticket. I hear your cookbook, Fabio's Italian Kitchen, is doing pretty well. It's named one of the top 10 cookbooks for spring by Publisher's Weekly. Why do you think it's doing so well?

FV: I didn't know that. I got picked for one of the best cookbook[s] from Publisher'sWeekly? I didn't know that. That's a good deal!

SK: Is there anything else that you think our readers would like to know?

FV: Every week I come out with my own magazine, it's an e-magazine, and you guys can subscribe if you want to. It's completely free on fabioviviani.com and every week there [are] great tips on food, recipes, videos, wine suggestions, pairings, drinks, all kinds of stuff. It's free for everybody, it will never cost you a cent.

Katie Holmes' Allure cover: She opens up on the inside

We've always loved Katie Holmes. Her new interview with Allure only makes our love grow.

Katie Holmes talks to Allure

Life has been rough for Katie lately. Her marriage fell apart, her daughter rarely smiles, and her play closed early due to lack of ticket sales. Our girl is a survivor, though, and she's pulled through with that always demure smile.

Now, she's on the cover of Allure, trading her smile for a cold stare and a bunch of water. Like our mamas always said, though: It's what's on the inside that counts.

So, what did they talk about? A little bit of everything.

Katie Holmes' style evolution>>

Despite the fact that Katie still looks nearly as young and vibrant as she did back in her Dawson's Creek days, the magazine got her talking about aging.

"Why do we have to keep fighting? We're not going to look like we're 25 when we're not." She went on to say, "I'm hoping to find other things that make me feel good about myself."

Like maybe going to law school? Katie still says that isn't out of the question. "Well, my brother and father are attorneys, and — we'll see. I like the practical thinking of attorneys."

Another life choice she won't rule out is more kids. She told Allure she's "open to it."Assuming the right Mr. Holmes comes along, of course.

Signs Katie and Tom were headed for splitsville>>

As for the future... even just in terms of the rest of 2013, Katie remains hopeful, albeit vague. She told Allure, "I hope this is a peaceful year for a lot of people in the world. When you look back on the last year, there were a lot of tragedies — Hurricane Sandy, the Connecticut shooting. I … I just hope it's a good year for everyone." When the magazine pressed her for something more personal, all Katie would give was, "A lot of people have gone through a lot of stuff."

Does anyone else find that a little tough to read? We do. We hope Katie gets the peaceful 2013 she deserves. Maybe by 2014 she'll be ready to tell us some kind of good news.

naked skin beauty balm

There are beauty balms and then there are beauty balms. With so many choices in the market, how does Urban Decay's new offering measure up? Read our review below.

This wonder balm supposedly does it all: minimizes wrinkles, pores and redness instantly. It also has a bit of an anti-aging component to it, giving your skin a lift in eight weeks. That's a tall order for a balm to accomplish in such a little tube.

Urban Decay's Naked Skin line is a terrific line: We have loved the weightless liquid makeup and now the beauty balm is doing wonders for our skin.

How it measures up

The directions on the box are to wear alone for gorgeous skin or follow up with foundation. The beauty balm looks and feels like a beauty balm, but on application, it goes on much more sheer compared to other balms we've used. This is a good thing if you want to follow up with foundation or have a sheer look.

It has a translucent look to it upon application, and we advise you to not rub it into the skin too much because you don't want it to be powdery or chalky on your skin .

It does not tint the skin but diffuses lightly with high-tech pigments.

Not your average BB cream

We were definitely expecting the Naked Skin Beauty Balm to look and feel like a BB cream but it definitely isn't one . Naked Skin is a great option if you want something truly light, so for the more humid, sticky summer months, I would reach for this cream over the rest.

It also boasts that it reduces pore size, and we did notice a difference, but nothing that leaped out at us. The best thing that this cream does is improve skin radiance: Your skin will definitely glow, and the clarity is fantastic.

Right out of the tube, the cream looks nice and warm in tone, and it goes on warm on the skin too. The cream is nice and thick but not so thick that it feels like pudding, but just enough so it is easy to apply. To be honest, the texture feels like liquid foundation. It glides evenly on the skin but as we mentioned before, don't rub it in.

In short, we feel this is definitely a great anti-aging primer but not necessarily a BB cream as you've known it. But yes, we recommend that you stock up for the summer months because you'll be glad to have something that sheer.

Beyond sit & stay

Every dog owner dreams of having that perfectly behaved dog — the one who is calm, knows his commands and doesn’t have any bad habits. So once your pup knows the basics like sit and stay, what else do you need to know to make sure your dog becomes a well-adjusted member of the family? A lot! Here are our dog training tips every dog owner needs to know.

No matter what goals you have with dog training, these tips will help you achieve them.

Socialization

Socialize your dog as often as possible starting at a young age. This means that you should go on regular walks outside of your neighborhood and expose your dog to new people and situations, says Fanna Easter, Petco's National Dog Training Education Specialist. This will boost his confidence and decrease anxiety in new situations, which will carry over to other areas . There is no such thing as too much socialization, so get going!

dog treatsReward him

Be sure to reward good behavior! How will your dog know he’s doing what you want if you don’t tell him? Reward your dog when he’s lying calmly at your feet and during any other desirable behaviors, explains Fanna Easter. He’ll be more likely to do what you want if you let him know what he does well.

Be consistent

Follow the dog laws for success such as keeping a schedule for you and your pet in terms of feeding, walks, playtime and more. “Dogs and people both need mental/physical exercise and healthy diet for better quality, longer life,” explains Dog Trainer Geralynn Cada of GCUnleashed.com. She also explains that a consistent system of communication is key as well to lessening anxiety in both the dog and the human family members.

Watch your tone

Your tone sets the mood of the training session. When speaking to your dog, he’ll respond quickly and properly if you are confident and calm in your tone and being, explains Geralynn Cada. “Dogs with owners that yell or use harsh tones to force obedience lead to a lower quality, shorter life for dog and owner,” she says. Just like in human-to-human interactions, the tone accounts for a whole lot.

Find his purpose

Each dog has a purpose in life, whether it’s to be a family dog, a guide dog, a therapy dog, a police dog or something else. Finding your dog’s purpose and/or something he excels at will go a long way toward his overall happiness. Geralynna Cada says it’s important to have your dog “pull his weight around the house, even if it is just to sit and entertain you with some great tricks every day.”

New survey shows house cleaning has positive romantic effects

Spending a little extra time sprucing up your space doesn't have to be a drag. In fact, it could even benefit your love life!
Kissing couple doing laundry

Clean home, happier couples

Spending a little extra time sprucing up your space doesn't have to be a drag. In fact, it could even benefit your love life!

In a new survey from popular cleaning brand Liquid-Plumr, women said the positive feelings that resulted from solving household problems could lead to a romantic rendezvous.

Of the 1,000 women ages 18 and older who were interviewed:

  • A third of respondents admitted to fantasizing about their significant other while doing housework.
  • 49 percent of women who took the survey said they were more likely to be intimate after chores had been completed.
  • 38 percent also ranked having their house in order as important as buying a new outfit or being in a familiar place when it comes to relaxing on a date.

Clearly we all want clean, well put together homes. That's certainly not news — but the effects the state of your home can have on your relationship might make you think twice about leaving that load of dishes in the sink for the second night in a row.

It affects men, too

Kelly Dwinells, marketing manager for Liquid-Plumr, said, "Being on top of chores not only resulted in clear drains and scuff-free floors, but women also reported they felt less stress, were less distracted and more relaxed."

"49 percent of women who took the survey said they were more likely to be intimate after chores had been completed."

But this doesn't mean women need to be relegated to the vacuum and duster all day. In fact, a study published by Cambridge University said that men are actually happier when doing housework. In a modern world where more and more women are either the co-contributors or even the sole breadwinners in their households, it's not surprising that more men are willing to divide up the work needed to be done at home.

Rather than one partner having to come home after a long day on the job to deal with a mess in the kitchen or bathroom, take the time to plan out who does what so you can both spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying each other.

So it seems taking the time to make your home look as fabulous as possible not only has a visual appeal but allows you to sit back, relax and enjoy an evening with your significant other.

Armchair travels: Rome (a roundup)

$

Rome, the center of the Western Catholic Church, moves front and center this month. Not only will Christians soon celebrate Easter, but everyone the world over was focused on the Vatican, waiting for news of who would become the new pope. We visit Rome through the pages of three very different stories that show the city during the ancient empire, through archaeological sites, and in modern times.

The Imperfectionists

The Imperfectionists
By Tom Rachman

Tom Rachman's The Imperfectionists is a collection of interlinked stories that find common ground in the various people associated with an English-language newspaper started in Rome in 1954. Each chapter centers around a single character — such as managing editors, publishers, owners, reporters, has-beens, wannabes, and copy editors — at a specific point of crisis in his or her life. From the perspective of each wonderfully flawed character, we are given pieces of a puzzle, until by the end we finally see how the full cast of employees join together to create a complete picture of the ex-pats' Roman world. We are also treated to the workings of the newspaper and how it morphs over some 50-odd years. From newsprint, typesetters, and street reporters to computerized layout and electronic filing, the changing rhythms and personality of the paper itself mirror those of the world at large.

The Reincarnationist

The Reincarnationist
By M. J. Rose

When photojournalist Josh Ryder arrived in Rome on assignment to photograph the pope, he had no idea his life was about to change forever. First, he just barely survives the destruction caused by a suicide bomber; then he starts to have memories of events that seemed to have occurred almost 2,000 years ago. With the help of the Phoenix Foundation, an organization that focuses on reincarnation, Josh begins to understand that he once lived in ancient Rome with his true love, Sabina. Soon, Josh is haunted by unresolved issues surrounding Sabina's death, the consequences of which are felt across time. M. J. Rose's The Reincarnationist takes us from modern-day Rome to the unrest of ancient times, as Josh visits archaeological sites in an effort to solve the mystery of his past. The mix of intrigue, romance, and reincarnation with a can't-put-down pace makes this thriller a recommended read.

I, Claudius

I, Claudius
by Robert Graves

Robert Graves's I, Claudius tells the story of how Claudius rose above the crowd of contenders to become emperor of Rome in 41 C.E., at the ripe old age of 49. Despite his intelligence and keen sense of observation, the power-hungry members of his family overlooked him as a possible leader; thanks to his clubfoot and strong stammer, they assumed he was an imbecile. As Claudius records his memoirs, he gives us the insider's view of the previous three caesars — Augustus, Tiberius, and Caligula — revealing fascinating details of their personal lives. Through the tale of his unexpected success, Claudius brings the vibrant sociopolitical world of ancient Rome to life. Incorporating everything from culinary treats, recreational activities, and religious issues to backstabbing intrigue and the unquenchable thirst for political dominance, this novel is historical fiction at its best.

Danica Patrick is used to blazing trails in the racing industry, first in IndyCar and now with NASCAR. We sit down with the 31-year-old racer to talk about her career — and get tips we can translate to our own careers.

Danica Patrick interview

SheKnows: You made history this February by becoming the first woman to win a NASCAR pole position at the Daytona 500. How big of a moment was it for you in your career?

Danica Patrick: It was a very cool moment. I got a lot of recognition for it, but it was nice to get a moment to talk about all the people that it took to help me get there. Just a really nice moment.

SK: Was it a validating moment in your career?

DP: Someone said, "Did you realize you're the first [woman] on the pole?" and I didn't know. I usually don't know about any statistics until I break them.

SK: A lot of young women look up to you as someone who has been a trailblazer in a male-dominated industry. What advice do you have for other women who are venturing on their own career paths?

DP: The most important thing is to find something that you love to do... find out what it is that you love. You can make a job out of anything, but if you have the passion you'll follow through in the way you need to be a success. Those who don't have [the passion] are the ones that quit early or don't follow through on their dreams. It takes time.

Also, always be true to yourself so you have more confidence to deal with any odds that are stacked against you. I use that as a guideline so I don't do anything I'm not comfortable with. I always stay true to who I am and only do things that are an extension of my personality, whether that's a photo shoot, a race, a commercial, or even a video game.

SK: Speaking of video games, tell me about your role in the new Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

DP: We worked on it last year and it was a lot of fun. I've never really done anything like it before and it was a lot of fun to be a part of the process and get a voiceover — and make an avatar.

The CW's hit series Arrow continues its gripping first season on Wednesday, March 20, with "The Huntress Returns". In the episode, Oliver and Tommy are finally opening their club, Verdant, and are thrilled they are able to get Steve Aoki to play at the big event.

Arrow season 1 episode 17

SheKnows got the chance to chat with music man Steve Aoki himself and hear firsthand what it was like to take part in the hit CW drama.

On how he got involved with Arrow

SheKnows: How did you get involved with the show?

Steve Aoki: They just hit up my team and it kind of just came in my direction, but when I found out about it I was really excited because I was already a fan of the show. I just wanted to make sure that I had time. That's the hardest thing for me. I have one regret: There's one movie that asked me to do a DJ scene and I couldn't switch my schedule around to do it and I missed my opportunity to be in Tropic Thunder. I was like, "I can't make that mistake again."

CW's Arrow: Felicity's joined the team — now what?>>

On working with the cast and crew on the show

SK: What was it like working with the cast and crew of Arrow?

SA: I was really surprised how hospitable and really nice everyone was; just super-friendly and inviting me to hang out with them and get to know them personally. These are working actors who are doing all kinds of interesting things and there were a lot of connections being made in terms of music and our interests and stuff like that. It was a really great experience.

On filming the scenes in Oliver's club

SK: Was it different to film the club scenes opposed to actually DJ-ing in a real club?

SA: It was definitely different, but I knew what I was getting myself into because I did something similar for a movie that I shot last year. So I knew about shooting the scene over and over again. I remember working with the crowd in front of me and thinking, "We've gotta change the vibe or else it won't feel like the energy from one of my shows." Plus my music is pretty intense, so it's not like cocktail bar music. So I talked to everyone in the front and told them "you gotta get loose" and "throw your arms up, shout and scream if you want." Being able to communicate with the extras in the crowd helped me a lot with making the vibe bigger.

SK: What was it like to have to film some of the club scenes in silence?

SA: It was a little funny when that happened, because there's a scene where the music is actually playing; they have a pretty decent sound system in there so it was loud and it felt real. Then when they were shooting the talking parts obviously there's no music, but you're still kind of bouncing. I put music in my headphones so it was kind of easy for me. I just got into my own world and grooved. It was kind of funny; going back and forth with no music to blasting music and maintaining the vibe where the music was going.

Arrow recap: Lethal injection>>

On what songs will be used in the episode

SK: What songs did you use in the show and how did you choose them?

SA: They are two of my songs, called "Singularity" and "Transcend." I wanted those songs to be in there because they're my latest singles. They are definitely more underground than some of my other records, but they are brand-new songs of mine that I've been playing a lot. We actually just put them out two months ago so they are kind of fresh Aoki tracks.

On shooting behind-the-scenes footage from the episode

SK: Did you film any of your show On the Road with Steve Aoki footage while you were filming Arrow?

SA: Yes, we did. We did put the camera on me. They said the same thing: that they saw the On the Road with Steve Aoki stuff and really liked it. It was a little different though. My regular camera man — I'm practically married to the guy, so he's with me all of the time. But this time we had these huge cameras with a guy I don't know it, it was hard for me to do the same kind of word play with him, but we still made it happen and we made it pretty interesting. We did some interviews with like Oliver and I talking about the scene and the Huntress coming back into the story line, opening the brand-new club, and being there with the cast and crew.

Check out the behind-the-scenes video below:

Looks like fans are going to be in for a real treat when Arrow returns from its mini-hiatus. Are you excited to see the episode and hear the songs that Steve Aoki will be playing in the big nightclub scene?

More to Paris than meets
the eye

While we love the Louvre and it's definitely a must-visit no matter how many times you're in Paris, we also know that if you have time, there are a quite a few other museums to add to your Paris itinerary.

Musée Rodin
Musée Rodin

No matter what you're interested in, from contemporary art to sculpture to the classics to medieval artifacts, there's something to please every taste in the city of light.

Musée Rodin

Quick tip: If you want to check out the museum after dark, you can do so on Wednesdays when it stays open until 8:45 p.m.

We stumbled upon this memorable museum one rainy morning in Paris, and the wet walk to get there turned out to be well worth it. Get lost among sculptures , prints, drawings, ceramics, photographs and paintings to get great insight to the iconic artist Rodin and his work. The museum actually has two sites — one in central Paris in the Hotel Biron, and one just outside of the city at Rodin’s former home at Meudon.

Musée d'Orsay

OK, so this one isn't exactly a hidden gem, it’s still a nice alternative to the ever-crowded Louvre, especially if you get up early and go in the morning like we did. The spacious, airy museum is a joy to wander through, and there’s so much to see, it could take you a few trips to get through it all . Get your fill of paintings, sculpture , photography and even decorative art. All the big names are on display here, including Van Gogh, Rodin, Cezanne, Renoir, Monet, Manet and Degas.

Musée national du Moyen Âge
Musée National du Moyen Âge

Musée Picasso

Located in the Marais, a must-visit Paris neighborhood, this home to some of Picasso’s greatest works was established in 1985 and has since seen more than 12 million visitors. Over 3000 works of art are on display, including paintings, sketches, sculptures and ceramics, along with photographs of the man himself, his family and his friends. Walking around the museum you really get a sense of not only Picasso’s art and the progression of his craft, but also how he lived his life and how that might have influenced the way he wielded his brush. Do note that the museum is currently closed for renovation but due to reopen this summer, just in time for prime Paris tourist season.

Hungry? Don’t miss out on a falafel from the Marais — little shops are everywhere to get an unforgettable crunchy sandwich will hit the spot after your afternoon in the museum.

Check out five ways to see Paris like a local>>

Musée de l'Orangerie

This small but well-curated museum is home to work from the Impressionist group, including Monet, Renoir, Modigliani, Cezanne and Matisse. If you’re a fan of the work of this group of painters, then a trip to L’Orangerie will be well worth your time and euros. The lovely glass roof adds to the experience, giving the already lush artwork even more of an ethereal look. The location — near the Jardin de Tuilieries — also can’t be beat. Combine your museum visit with a leisurely wander through the manicured grounds.

Further afield: We strongly recommend a day trip outside of Paris to check out Claude Monet’s home in Giverny, located about 50 miles from the city. Take the train from Paris Saint-Lazare station to Vernon . Then take a shuttle bus to Giverny from the train station or rent a bicycle if you’re feeling energetic . The highlight here is getting to see Monet’s vast gardens, which inspired his work, along with his former home.

Musée National du Moyen Âge

It's not always on the top of everyone’s Paris museum-hopping list, but we still thoroughly enjoyed our jaunt through this fascinating museum encompassing life in medieval times. We were instantly intrigued by the extensive display of fifteenth-century tapestries, early medieval sculpture, furnishings, stained glass and goldsmith work. Get an audio guide to learn the history of the pieces you’re looking at, which we felt really added to the experience. If you have time, take a walk through the pretty gardens inspired by the middle ages.

Wanna jazz up your weekend breakfast? Basic pancakes are pumped up with sweet corn and crunchy bacon. Cooked till perfection and topped with sweet maple syrup. Oh yes!

corn and bacon pancakes

Pancakes don't have to just be sweet. These corn and bacon filled pancakes are perfect for brunch and give a savory spin to this normally sweet treat. To make them even more decadent, we drizzled maple syrup on top to create the perfect sweet and savory combination!

Corn and bacon pancake recipe

Adapted from Recipe Girl

Yields 8 pancakes

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound bacon
  • 1 small shallot, minced
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons chopped herbs
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 cup fresh corn kernels
  • Maple syrup, for topping

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet fry bacon and, once crisp, let it drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Crumble and set aside.
  2. Remove grease from the skillet by pouring it into a small bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of grease back to the pan and add in the shallots and saute till soft and fragrant.
  3. While the shallots are cooking, whisk together the flours, herbs, salt, pepper.
  4. Once combined, add in milk, egg, melted butter, corn kernels, cooked shallots and most of the crumbled bacon . Stir together. The mixture will be thicker than normal pancake batter, but if it's too thick simply add a dash of milk to thin it out until desired consistency is met.
  5. Heat the same skillet you used to fry the bacon and shallots over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of the bacon grease back to the skillet and when the oil is hot scoop 1/3 cup batter per pancake, cooking two pancakes at a time.
  6. Cook till the bottom is brown and the edges are set. Flip, and cook on the other side till brown and cooked in the middle.
  7. Top with a little sprinkle of bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup.

Henry Bromell, Golden Globe-winning writer, producer dies

Homeland has had a death in the family. Henry Bromell, TV veteran and executive producer of the acclaimed series, died of a heart attack on Monday at 65.

Homeland writer, Henry Bromell dies

What do you do when you lose one of your producers and writers, someone who helped you win a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy? What do you do when someone from your team dies, leaving you one man short for a team that needs all its people to write in all the twists, turns and complexities of plot and character on your show? Those are the questions, along with the grief of losing a friend, that the Homeland team are facing.

Fiction meets TV: A Homeland mashup>>

Their Writer's Guild Award-winning writer and producer, Henry Bromell, passed away Monday at the age of 65. It is believed he had a heart attack.

While Homeland was his most recent success, it wasn't his only. As a matter of fact, television isn't even the best place to start when introducing you to Bromell, a man who most likely would have remained a mystery to the vast majority of television viewers if not for his early passing. Alas, it's happened and you should know: Bromell started out writing for the page, not the screen.

His career began in his early 20s, during the 1970s, when Bromell began seeing his stories in the New Yorker and went on to release two collections of short stories, earning praise from the New York Times. His first novel was The Follower, released in 1983. Later, in 2001, he went on to write Little America, a book inspired by his life as the son of a CIA agent, which focused on a son determined to find out his father's top secret employment.

Homeland's super intense 2nd season>>

It's easy to see the connection to Homeland now, right? But before Homeland, there were shows such as Homicide: Life on the Street and I'll Fly Away. Buried even further down on his resume was Northern Exposure, where his TV career began due to the sheer luck of making the right friend in a writing group. What began as a fluke turned into his very own niche.

He wasn't writing or producing dramas, he was creating "literary dramas." Like a good book, he wrote characters and scenes that left impressions upon the viewers. He created character depth and drama that stood out off two-dimensional screens. Carrie wasn't freaking out on television, she was freaking out in your living room, making you question your own sanity, making you stare intensely into the eyes of a possible terrorist while thinking, "Yeah, but can you blame him?"

Homeland sweeps the Golden Globes>>

In each of Bromell's efforts, his characters took on depth that previously didn't exist in television. His literary background, his knowledge of how to build a character, made him a legend at an early age. In his life he was irreplaceable yet Homeland suddenly finds itself in need of a replacement.

Jon Hamm forced to put his package away by AMC

Jon Hamm is being forced to wear underwear by AMC after years of being able to swing freely in the breeze.

Jon Hamm

The revealing performances of Mad Men's Jon Hamm are causing quite a stir on set — so much so that a wardrobe adjustment is in order. The actor is known for letting it all hang out both on- and off-camera, but now he is being forced to wrap it up due to the more revealing pant cuts of the new decade.

"This season takes place in the 1960s, where the pants are very tight and leave little to the imagination," a source later high-fived by Hamm told the New York Daily News. "Jon's impressive anatomy is so distracting that they politely insisted on underwear."

Jon Hamm's softcore porn past revealed>>

Christina Hendricks isn't the only cast member with ample blessings, it seems.

"Imagine how distracting that would be on the side of a bus or building," said the source. "When the promotional pictures came back the first few seasons, we had to work with them. Everyone was concerned about too much Christina Hendricks boob, but it's Jon that has the most to show. It's a good problem to have."

TV's sexiest men: We're thankful for these guys all year>>

"His privates are the inside joke… [he] knows what he's got."

Hamm's rep pretended this isn't the best PR ever and feigned indignation, telling the Daily News, "It is ridiculous and not really funny at all. I'd appreciate you taking the high road and not resorting to something childish like this that's been blogged about 1,000 times."

Mad Men returns to AMC with a two-hour season premiere on Sunday, April 7, on AMC.

Host a unique Easter Egg hunt

Tired of the same old Easter egg hunt? These unique ideas will have your kids counting down to Easter year after year. From cookie parties to glow-in-the-dark egg hunts, try one of these memorable Easter activities this spring.

Start a new tradition this Easter by coming up with a different Easter egg hunt routine. Kids will love a fresh spin on the conventional egg hunt. These ideas require minimal prep time, but they’re big on fun. Which Easter egg hunt is right for you?

Hunt for bunnies

Easter fabric bunnies
Image courtesy of The Little Fabric Blog

Ask your kids this question: What if you catch the Easter Bunny and his buddies before the eggs are hidden? What kids might not know is that if you catch the Easter Bunny, you get to keep him. Or so goes this fun spin on an Easter egg hunt. Begin with colorful scraps of fabric. You can pick up inexpensive remnants and bulk stuffing at your local fabric store. Follow this simple tutorial to sew a basket full of bunnies to hide in the yard or throughout your house. Let kids search for bunnies and keep them at the end of the hunt. Your little hunters will love cuddling with their prizes at night.

Create an Easter egg scavenger hunt

Instead of hiding eggs throughout your home or yard, put together an elaborate hunt using clues and maps. Search for printable clues or draw your own maps that are catered to your kids’ reading levels. Challenge participants to solve riddles, unscramble words or find items using a map. Kids will love being challenged beyond looking around for eggs. If you’re throwing a big Easter party, encourage kids to dress up as little explorers or junior Easter Bunnies as they head off on the hunt for lost eggs. If you’re concerned about uneven egg haul or children who are too young to follow directions, use a simple color-coded scheme. Karen at Sew Many Ways shares a great way to upcycle paint cans. Assign each child a color and instruct the child to pick up only the eggs in that shade.

Learn how to naturally dye Easter eggs>>

Host a cookie party

Easter hunt cookies

As an alternative to a traditional Easter egg hunt, host a cookie-making party. Help kids create Easter cookies to take home in paper baskets. These Easter hunt cookies are perfect for an Easter cookie party. Small chocolate candies make up the eggs hidden in “grass” made of dyed oatmeal cookie. Consider substituting peanut-safe almond butter or sunflower seed butter if you expect children with peanut allergies. While the cookies are baking, help kids wash their hands from cooking time and work on a quick craft, such as embellishing simple paper baskets.

Search for glow-in-the-dark eggs

Easter glow eggs

Change things up this year by hosting an egg hunt in the dark. Hide glowing eggs outside or hide them inside, in a darkened room. Adorn the kids in glow-in-the-dark bracelets and necklaces, arm them with flashlights for safety and send them on their way. To get the eggs to glow, fill plastic Easter eggs with mini party lights or coiled up glow-in-the-dark bracelets. Either can be found inexpensively at your local hobby or party store.

10 Ways parents can help their teens be safe drivers

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the U.S., and they crash at three times the rate of more experienced drivers. Parents play a key role in helping their teens become safe drivers, and there are specific skills parents should help teens master as they learn to drive.
Teen driver

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the U.S., and they crash at three times the rate of more experienced drivers. Parents play a key role in helping their teens become safe drivers, and there are specific skills parents should help teens master as they learn to drive.

help protect your teen

Studies show teens look to their parents for guidance and positive examples. Therefore, it’s important for parents to understand what they can do to help protect their teens during the first year of licensure, which is the most dangerous time of new drivers’ lives.

Here are some important skills teens must develop, and rules they should follow, to help ensure their safety on the roads:

1

Nighttime driving

Driving at night presents unique challenges. Visibility is poor and there is a higher likelihood of impaired or fatigued drivers. Additionally, most fatal teen-related nighttime crashes happen before midnight, with 40 percent of all teen crashes occurring between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Given teens’ already high crash risk, they should be off the roads no later than 10 p.m., and earlier is better.

2

Inclement weather

Vehicles react very differently when roads are slick or when visibility is poor, and following times should be increased. Most states require teens to log a certain number of supervised hours driving in inclement weather, but parents are encouraged to require more.

3

Practice gap awareness

Making turns is a difficult skill to master, especially turning left. Maintaining a safe following distance also can be tricky for new drivers. Teens need plenty of practice gauging how long it takes to safely make a turn and how much distance they should keep between their vehicle and the one they are following.

4

Scan the roads

Studies show drivers have about three seconds to react to a hazard — one second to recognize it and two more to react. With experience, drivers become better at reacting to hazards but newly-licensed drivers are not as quick to respond or recognize them. Habitually checking rear mirrors, side mirrors, blind spots and scanning the road ahead and on each side will help teens adjust to changes in their driving environment.

5

Friends can be fatal

Riding with or carrying teen passengers is particularly dangerous for teen drivers because peers can be very distracting. Just one teen passenger can increase a teen driver’s crash risk by as much as 48 percent. Three or more can increase crash risk by as much as 307 percent. Teens should never ride or drive unsupervised with young passengers, including younger siblings.

6

Cell phone use

Regardless of age or years of driving experience, cell phone use while driving is risky. Drivers using cell phones — handheld or hands-free — are four times as likely to crash, and drivers who text are at least eight times as likely to crash as distraction-free drivers. Given teens’ already high crash risk, the combination of cell phone use and inexperience behind the wheel can be deadly.

7

Seat belt use is imperative

Seat belts reduce the risk of death to front-seat car passengers by 45 percent, and reduce the risk of injury by 50 percent. A 2008 study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed 80 percent of teens said they always wear a seat belt because their parents insisted they do so when they were young. Setting a positive example really does make a difference.

8

Never use alcohol or other drugs

In 2010, about 1 in 5 teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had some alcohol in their system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. No driver, regardless of age or experience, can safely operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Teens must understand the risk involved and the consequences of drinking or using other drugs and driving.

9

Review the state’s teen driving laws

Each state has some form of Graduated Driver Licensing, which was developed to keep teens safe as they learn to drive. Teens and parents can review them together from time to time and set their own rules and restrictions. Just because something isn’t a state law doesn’t mean it can’t be a law in the home.

10

Get involved

Making sure teens are safe on the roads is everyone’s responsibility. Recognizing the need to raise awareness at the grassroots level, The Allstate Foundation and the National Safety Council partnered to establish Teen Safe Driving Coalitions in 10 states. If you live in California, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee or Texas, consider getting involved and becoming an advocate for safer teen driving.

About the author

Kelly Browning, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of Impact Teen Drivers www.impactteendrivers.org and leader of the California Teen Safe Driving Coalition, an initiative of The Allstate Foundation and the National Safety Council. Impact Teen Drivers is an education and awareness program focused on stopping the number one killer of young people in America — reckless and distracted driving. It is her philosophy that it will take all of us — parents, teens, law enforcement, educators, media and dedicated community members — to change the culture of driving to one which is distraction free.

Henry Rollins speaks out on Steubenville rape case

$
0
0
Outspoken artist Henry Rollins believes lots of people had a hand in the rape that put Steubenville, Ohio, on the map, not just the teen boys convicted – and he has a few ideas to make sure it never happens again.

Henry Rollins

If you are a parent, you never in a million years think you're raising the kind of kid who thinks sexually assaulting someone is a joke or that rape victims should be vilified. Yet time after time it happens, and the Steubenville rape case brought the phenomena to the forefront of our collective consciousness.

How did dozens of kids get involved in the attempted coverup of a horrifying crime? Outspoken artist Henry Rollins has a few ideas.

In a piece written for The Raw Story, Rollins speaks out against the rape culture these kids grew up in and the anti-girl culture that allowed the backlash against the victim to breed.

"What made these young people think that that what they did was ok? What was in their upbringing, the information and morals instilled in them that allowed them to do what they did, minute after minute, laughing, joking, documenting it and then calling it a night and going home? Out of all the people who were witness to what happened, why wasn’t there someone putting a stop to it?" he wrote.

Ellen DeGeneres tells the Supreme Court to do the right thing>>

"What I am attempting to get at, and I apologize if I am not being clear enough is that this is a failure on many levels. Parents, teachers, coaches, peers all come into play here. I am not trying to diffuse blame or lessen the awfulness of what happened but I want to address the complexity of the cause in an effort to assess the effect so it can be prevented."

"Some might say that the two going to the youth facility are as much victims as the young woman who was assaulted. I do not agree," Rollins continued. "The two are offenders. What they did was obviously wrong. That being said, we cannot end the discussion at that point and expect things to change."

The path to change, Rollins posits, it true equality between the sexes — something our society is still lacking.

Taylor Swift tops the list for being "good">>

"I think to a great degree, we humans still divide ourselves into two species, even though we are monotypic," he explained. "There are males and females. We see them as different and not equal. Things get better when women get more equality. That is a bit obvious, but I think it leads to better results up the road. If it’s a man’s world as they say, then men, your world is a poorly run carnage fest.

"It is obvious that the two offenders saw the victim as someone that could be treated as a thing. This is not about sex, it is about power and control. I guess that is what I am getting at. Sex was probably not the hardest thing for the two to get, so that wasn’t the objective. When you hear the jokes being made during the crime, it is the purest contempt."

Pregnant Kate Middleton, who is around five months pregnant, looked glowing and gorgeous in an Emilia Wickstead green coat as she attended a St. Patrick’s Day parade with Prince William. The Duchess of Cambridge actually wore this exact same coat last St. Patrick’s Day, although she wore it with a belt.

The rumor mill has been in overdrive after Middleton hinted she may be having a baby girl. In fact, the U.K.'s National Inquisitor revealed that they have already chosen a baby name— which is :

ElizabethDianaCarole!

The source states that they picked Elizabeth after Queen Elizabeth, Diana after Princess Diana and Carole after Kate’s mom.

A royal source, however, told E! News that the couple has yet to officially announce anything.

“Nobody knows what William and Kate are calling their baby or even if they have decided on a name,“ the source says. “They are being very careful to keep everything to themselves. The Duke and Duchess are taking their privacy very seriously. They are not speaking to anyone about these private matters.“

We do know that Prince William and Kate do have a cute nickname for the baby. They are calling it “our little grape.”

Pregnant Kristen Bell is ready to breastfeed! The funny actress had fun with her breast pump at her baby shower as she posted this picture of her opening her presents. Bell, who is expecting her first child with Dax Shepard, is wearing a gorgeous Isabella Oliver Tilda Print Maternity Maxi Dress .

Joining her at the baby shower were her House of Lies costars Ben Schwartz and Josh Lawson, as well as Rachel Bilson — who was spotted carrying a gift wrapped in pink paper.

Bell hasn't revealed the sex of the baby, however judging by the pink presents perhaps they are expecting a baby girl?

The Veronica Mars actress did say she is trying hard to be aware of being healthy during her pregnancy.

“I have been hyper-aware of everything… not only just in food,“ she told E! News. “I'm not strict, but I'm just very aware of what I'm putting in my body because it's affecting someone else. And that's kind of my responsibility. So, I'm working hard in that department.“
