Update: In Heartbreaking Video, Mara Lane Learns of Her Miscarriage

Update September 13, 2017, 12:30 p.m. ET: Following her courageous announcement of her pregnancy loss — and her husband's subsequent relapse — Mara Lane also shared a beautiful and heartbreaking video of the moment she learned of her miscarriage.

In the video, Lane shares her sonogram as well as her doctor's news: "So, unfortunately, the fetus has no heartbeat today." The post also includes a gorgeous image of the tree where the fetus is "planted."

"I have been given peace," Lane writes, "and Baby Willow is now planted in the tree in front of our home that has weeping long branches and leaves so we can brush our faces in soft leaves in passing or we can see the baby dance with the wind in the branches as they sway. It is helping me process the situation... as Nature does. Thank you again Dr Stu for getting us through that as watching a sonogram not have a heartbeat is very surreal and beyond sad... May we grow as humans and have more compassion for all humanity."

Original story:

We were saddened to hear that Mara Lane, actor and wife of Jonathan Rhys Meyers, recently endured a miscarriage — and that Meyers, who has battled alcoholism in the past, has suffered a relapse after the loss of their baby.

Lane and Meyers — who share son Wolf, born in December 2016 — acknowledged both the miscarriage and the Irish actor's struggle in a deeply moving Instagram post on Sept. 10.

Lane captioned the post, "With much sadness, we open our hearts to share that J and I lost our second child, who was baking in the oven. Child was very very much wanted (right now especially by J, so he took the news particularly not so well) and we are still working with coping skills over here... when life throws us curve balls such as these."

Lane wrote poignantly about their family's experiences:

"Depression is a real concern from past abuse as well as alcoholism which he was born with. He has been able to turn any ugliness and hurt in his life into art and is the strongest person I know," she said of Meyers. "I do not know anyone who has been through what he has been through and reached his level of successes. It does seem though that every time we seem to be making so much progress... sometimes it's like two steps forward, one step back."

Rhys Meyers and Lane

Rhys Meyers and Lane

Meyers, a Golden Globe winner, was forcibly removed from Dublin Airport recently when he was too intoxicated to fly. Lane acknowledged the paparazzi photos of the incident in her Instagram post.

"My husband is an Irishman who battles alcoholism and depression and drank between jobs to try to cope with the sadness of this news. I am trying to and still learning/adjusting to living with the public, like one would as a concerned mother-in-law," she said. "I feel that whomever took photos of my husband was slightly in the wrong and was concerned for the wrong reasons but... it's ok. It's ok. Maybe you have/had a family to feed and need/needed money? I don't know. We forgive you."

We are utterly in awe of Lane's eloquent, compassionate response to paparazzi photos during such an excruciatingly painful time for her family.

Where is Meyers right now? Lane wrote that he's getting help by residing with a bodyguard and a sober friend. He was unable to be admitted to a hospital, as there was a two-month waiting period in place.

Lane ended her post, "Life is life. Life is beautiful. Life is tough sometimes though so let's try not looking down at someone unless we intend on helping them up."

Beautifully said.

Josh & Anna Duggar's 5th Child Is Born, Everyone Has Mixed Feelings

$

Honestly, it's pretty uncomfortable for us to report anything about Josh Duggar, who in 2015 notoriously admitted to infidelity (kinda bad) as well as the sexual abuse of children (the absolute worst thing a person can do). After that, The 19 Kids and Counting stars, Josh and wife Anna, kept out of the public eye for a while, which was probably a wise move. Frankly, we're still pretty stunned that Anna stayed with him. But if that's not enough of a head-scratcher, here's one: Anna and Josh just had their fifth child together.

Yesterday, the new (healthy, thankfully!) arrival was announced by the couple on the Duggar family website. They wrote, "We are so thankful and happy to announce the arrival of our new son, Mason Garrett Duggar. Both he and Anna are doing well. He arrived today without complication and we already adore him."

More: The Duggars Have Been Embroiled in Over 20 Parenting Controversies

It was no secret that the couple was expecting; Josh and Anna announced their pregnancy in March. “As we continue our journey as a family and rebuild our lives, we are delighted to share with you that we are expecting a new baby boy later this year. Beauty comes from ashes and we cannot wait to see and kiss the face of this sweet new boy! - Josh & Anna.”

And there was more to the birth announcement yesterday over at the Duggar family website. "The entire family is ecstatic over the arrival of another beautiful blessing. We want to thank everyone for your prayers, kind words and well wishes. We appreciate it much more than we could ever express. We pray God blesses each of you with an abundance of the kindness you’ve shown us."

That's great. We love hearing about the arrival of a healthy newborn to a healthy mom after an uncomplicated delivery. The thing is, not everyone is feeling much kindness toward Josh and Anna (OK, mostly toward Josh). Although Josh and Anna have yet to announce their baby's arrival on their respective Twitter feeds, the Duggar family Twitter account did — and response has been, well, mixed.

There are some congrats and blessings from Duggar fans (after all, a baffling We Support Josh Duggar Instagram account even exists):

But other Twitter users are less than thrilled by the news that Josh and Anna are parents again.

Hey, we get it. None of this is this poor baby's fault. Little Mason didn't ask to be born into such a controversial clan. So here's to you, Mason. Welcome to the world, buddy. Mackynzie, Michael, Marcus, Meredith and Mason, we're rooting for you all to have your own reality TV show someday — about extricating yourself from the Duggars. Good luck, kids.

Everything You Need to Know About Fixer Upper's New Target Line

I've always been kind of obsessed with Chip and Joanna Gaines' style. The home renovations on their show, Fixer Upper, are totally gorgeous: the perfect blend of modern and rustic. And Joanna's decorating style is cozy, clean and chic, something I aspire to in my own home (well, as best I can as a renter who isn't allowed to install shiplap on every vertical surface).

More: You Can Help Chip & Joanna Gaines With Their Next Project

That's why I'm going crazy over the news that the duo are pairing up with Target to launch their own line of home goods at the store, called Hearth & Hand with Magnolia. Best of all, it's not just a one-time deal — the collection will become a mainstay at Target, with new releases rolling out each season.

Pippa Middleton's New Haircut Makes Her Look Even More Chic

After a brutally warm summer featuring a monthslong European heat wave nicknamed "Lucifer" by hot, uncomfortable locals, anyone with long, thick hair would be ready to give it a chop in favor of lighter, cooler, bouncier locks. Pippa Middleton, as it turns out, is no exception, and was just photographed with a new look for fall: a shoulder-length lob.

Middleton debuted the look while out on a bike ride in London, and paparazzi caught it from every angle, which will be really helpful when you need to show your stylist exactly what it looks like from all sides.

It was probably a long time coming for Middleton, who just got married four months ago and likely didn't want to cut her long, curly hair before walking down the aisle — long hair is so much more versatile for wedding styles, after all. But a change in seasons is a great time for a new look, though temperatures in London are finally starting to fall, meaning Middleton won't even be able to enjoy the benefits that come from having shorter, lighter hair during hot weather. We'll just have to see if she keeps it short until next summer.

Middleton's big chop comes after her sister, Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton, chopped off several inches of her own hair. Kate didn't go quite as short as Pippa did, though, and still wears hers with a little bit of curl compared to the straight lob Pippa is rocking in these photos.

What to Know About Starbucks' 2 Brand-New Fall Drinks

$

Starbucks has two new drinks this fall, and no, we're not talking about the pumpkin spice latte or the salted caramel mocha Frappuccino.

The first one snuck in under the radar. Apparently, Starbucks locations inside Target stores in the U.S. have been low-key slinging an exclusive new beverage — the dark mocha Frappuccino. If you love chocolate, this one is for you. It's made with dark cocoa, coffee, milk and ice, then blended and topped with a vanilla-infused whipped cream.

More: Starbucks Now Has a Turmeric Latte, but There's a Catch

Lest you think it'll be hard to get your hands on one of these limited-time beverages, fear not — they're currently for sale at nearly 1,500 Starbucks locations inside Target nationwide. The dark mocha Frappuccino will be available until supplies last.

Next up? Cold-pressed espresso. Starbucks has introduced this new brewing method at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle. Cold-pressed espresso is made with a combination of traditional espresso and cold brew coffee methods. In this case, espresso grounds are steeped in cold water for 45 minutes, and the cold water is then forced upward through the grounds and filters out as a smooth yet still potent espresso.

More: Your Starbucks Fix Just Got More Expensive

The cold-pressed espresso will be used as the base for a new menu of sparkling beverages, including a sparkling cold-pressed Americano, a cold-pressed ginger fizz and a cold-pressed Americano Exploration Flight.

If you can't make it to the Seattle roastery, who knows? If the method takes off, maybe someday we'll see the cold-pressed espresso in the regular stores too, used in our iced lattes, Americanos and the like.

So yes, you should still indulge in your favorite pumpkin spice drink this fall. But don't forget that there's even more seasonal goodness you could be exploring!

Why Salma Hayek Never Washes Her Face in the Morning

Salma Hayek is the epitome of beauty goals. So when the 50-year-old actress admitted she never — we repeat, never — washes her face in the morning, we were immediately intrigued about how she keeps her skin so flawless without the usual arsenal of scrubs, exfoliators and face washes.

The Emmy winner recently broke down her skin care regimen to The New York Times, revealing that she doesn’t wash her face in the morning because of a tip her grandmother gave her while she was growing up. Hayek explained that her grandmother told her that her skin naturally rejuvenates overnight, making morning face washes practically useless and really just for the gain of the companies that produce them.

More: Salma Hayek Debuted a Caramel Lob at Cannes

“I never cleanse my skin in the morning. My grandmother taught me that at night your skin replenishes all the things you lost during the day,” Hayek said. “Also, if I cleanse very well at night, why would it be dirty when I wake up? It’s for companies to have you use more products.”

However, Hayek doesn’t go entirely skin care-free in the morning. Instead of face wash, Hayek opts for a spritz of rosewater to kick-start her day. “I spritz rose water — it’s so gentle and wakes the skin up,” she said.

From a skin care standpoint, Hayek’s tip makes a lot of sense. Over the years, there have been several reports arguing that a morning face wash can do more harm than good by stripping your skin of the natural oils it produces overnight. Instead, experts are recommending rosewater — water literally infused with roses — as a way to hydrate, soothe the skin and combat damage.

Along with spritzing water, Hayek also revealed that she keeps her skin smooth and supple by traveling to London and Paris four times a year to receive a face massage by a Japanese masseuse. But this isn’t just any masseuse. Hayek claims that her masseuse can literally shape a person’s face with a single massage.

“Once she asked me, ‘Do you like your jaw more square or more round?’ After she was done, you could see the difference! I always get the round. My face is square enough,” Hayek said.

If you can’t shell out a few grand a year to fly to Europe to get your face re-shaped (ha), maybe you can try out Hayek’s rosewater tip with our roundup of our favorite rosewaters, below.

Larry Kings Reveals He Was Recently Diagnosed With Lung Cancer

As someone who's been on our TV screens for 60 years, it's easy to think of Larry King as invincible. He's been there so long and he always will be, right? But the truth is that 83-year-old King has already had a pretty major health scare. He just revealed that he was diagnosed with lung cancer last spring and has kept it a secret until now.

More: Leah Remini Has a Message for the Church of Scientology: Sue Me

"I go for my checkup and they say, 'Let's do a chest X-ray, and the doctor said to me, 'Something looks funny,'" King recalled in a new interview with Us Weekly. "They said the spot looked pretty small [...] I then did a CAT scan then a PET scan and then he said to me, 'You have lung cancer, but it looks very small, in the beginning stages.'"

King was lucky. It was early on, and after surgery to remove part of his lung, he's cancer free.

More: Bill Cosby TV Appearances That Made Everyone Uncomfortable (VIDEO)

"The doctor said to me, 'It was malignant but you were in the first stage. If it had stayed and we didn't find it, you would have had trouble in two or three years, but we got it and you were lucky,'" he said, adding that he was only away from work for two weeks to recover. "They showed me my latest chest X-ray, which is all clear. It was fun to see where that spot was and there is no spot now. They took off 20 percent of the lung."

This isn't the first time the award-winning journalist has faced health problems. He's already beat prostate cancer. And King quit smoking after a heart attack in the late '80s, though his years of smoking before that are still to blame for his lung cancer scare this year, his doctor told him.

For now, though, King is still broadcasting, and we're thankful for that.

Does Having IBS or Crohn’s Make Anal Sex Impossible?

$
0
0

Thinking about having anal sex for the first time? If you have anal health concerns, there’s much more to contend with than what positions you might be into and navigating the stigma and misconceptions about anal sex and anal play. Depending on what condition you’re living with, you may be good to go with some anal fun or you may have to forgo the experience altogether. Here’s how some anal health issues can be impacted by anal sex.

IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome affects 35 millions Americans. While folks who live with IBS might fear that their symptoms, which include pelvic pain, constipation and diarrhea, would be impacted by anal sex, studies show that isn’t the case according to Nicole Prause, a sexual psychophysiologist.

More: Does anal sex cause health problems or diseases?

“People who already struggle with this issue are unlikely to be impacted long term from infrequent anal sex,” says Prause, “but should still consider whether the risk is appropriate for the level of difficulty they already experience.”

Dr. Elizabeth Trattner, an acupuncturist who works with many patients with IBS, encourages some to refrain from anal sex altogether. “Anal intercourse can be painful for patients who have a chronic bowel disorder, and moreover, I don’t want them introducing any bacteria into the rectum that can cause an infection and irritation.”

IBS can be unpredictable, and if you do want to have anal sex while coping with the condition, you should definitely get comfortable with that fact. Even if you use an enema before having anal sex, that’s no guarantee things won’t get messy. You might want to experiment ahead of time with a butt plug or other sex toy to gauge how it feels for you, and of course, as in any sexual situation, communication with your partner is essential. As one Reddit contributor wrote, “If you want to try it, then try it. But don’t do it because you feel guilty.”

Anal fissures

An anal fissure occurs when you tear or crack the lining of your anus, which can happen due to childbirth, constipation, cancer or other conditions. It usually heals within six weeks, although you will likely experience pain and bleeding, especially when having bowel movements. Anal sex is a giant no-no if you have a fissure, says Prause, since it can lead to infection and aggravate and prolong the injury. Fissures can even make you super-receptive to STIs. In addition to refraining from anal sex, Prause urges patients to visit the doctor if their fissure isn’t healing on its own.

More: 25 Super-Honest Anal Sex Tips From Someone Who Loves It

Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s is a chronic condition involving the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which can result in ulcers in the bowel as well as anal fissures. (See above.) Here’s the deal with anal sex if you have Crohn’s — since those fissures can make you so receptive to STIs, it’s not that you can’t ever have anal sex if you live with Crohn’s, but you should be super-vigilant about using protection and lube.

Whether or not you have anal health concerns

Even if you don’t have anal health concerns, remember that it’s a myth that anal sex makes it less likely that you’ll contract an STI. “It is actually easier to contract an STI via anal sex because the skin is thinner than vaginal skin so it can tear easily,” says Kara Carpenter, of STDcheck.com. “If your skin is torn, you are at greater risk of contracting an STD because many STDs are spread through contact with infected blood.”

More: No, Anal Sex Is Not the Solution for This Medical Problem

You also shouldn't be embarrassed to talk to your doctor about anal sex whether or not you have anal health issues. “I’m way too embarrassed to discuss this with my male doctor,” wrote a Crohn’s sufferer seeking advice about anal sex from Go Ask Alice!, Columbia University’s team of health professionals.

Alice’s response: to remind this person that doctors, especially gastroenterologists, have definitely discussed anal sex with their patients, so it’s definitely not uncharted territory. You might decide that ultimately, anal sex isn’t for you, but there’s no underestimating the importance of finding a health care provider with whom you feel comfortable and safe.

One of the people Meadow tagged was Walker's longtime close friend, Vin Diesel, so we can't wait to see how he pays it forward.

On Walker's birthday, his She's All That co-star from nearly 20 years ago, Freddie Prinze Jr., gave a new interview and was of course asked about the late star. Prinze became emotional telling a story about when Walker landed that role.

"When Paul came in to audition, I didn't have cast approval, but I had what they called consultation," he remembered. "I knew Paul was the right guy, and when he finished the audition, I asked if I could excuse myself to go to the bathroom. I ran outside to where his car was parked. I said, 'Hey man, you're gonna get this job.' They didn't pay us anything. It was a small movie. [I said], 'They're gonna offer you $25,000, they have $75 in the budget. Don't say no.'"

After Walker's death three years ago, Prinze found out that Walker had told that story to his brother and mom. "To hear that, that meant a lot to him to share that. I loved that there was still that connection there," he said.

DWTS' Carrie Ann Inaba & Fiancé Robb Derringer Reportedly Broke Up

It has been a rough summer for love. Some of our favorite couples (Amy Schumer and Ben Hanisch, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt and Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell to name a few) couldn't make it until the leaves started turning, and we've been left to pick up the pieces of our broken hearts as they pick up theirs. And the summer of breakups isn't over yet. It's claimed yet another celeb couple.

Dancing with the Stars' Carrie Ann Inaba and her fiancé, Days of Our Lives star Robb Derringer, have reportedly called off their engagement.

Rumors have been flying for about a month now about the state of the couple's relationship, and those all came to a head over the weekend when Inaba hosted an event in Hawaii for Olympic figure skater and Season 6 winner Kristi Yamaguchi. Inaba wasn't wearing her engagement ring at the event, and she brought her mom as her plus-one rather than Derringer. Even though she wouldn't comment on her relationship, those signs were pretty clear.

This comes after Inaba posted a cryptic photo to Instagram reading, "Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes," and captioned with a broken heart emoji.

Cars Both You & Your Teen Will Want Them Driving

$

It’s safe to say the only time you truly look forward to visiting the DMV is on your 16th birthday. For parents, though, a kid getting her driver's license can definitely be daunting — likely because it involves watching your "baby" embark on the activity that is the leading cause of death for U.S teens according to the CDC. (Not to freak you out or anything.) But don't fret: Although there are several factors — price, mileage, even style — to take into consideration when purchasing a car for a new driver, the most important by far is safety.

For one thing, electronic stability control and curtain airbags are a must. Larger cars protect better in a crash, so no Vespas, OK? And steer clear of taller vehicles like SUVs, which have a higher center of gravity and are more likely to roll over. Sport and turbo editions with higher horsepower are also not recommended, as this increases the possibility of reckless driving.

So, with all that said, what on Earth is left to buy? Here are our nine picks for cars that check all the new-driver boxes — and even look cool too.

Chipotle Queso Is Finally Available Everywhere

We've been through so many ups and downs with Chipotle in the past few years, I feel like they're one of my exes. First, there was nothing but love for their tasty jumbo burritos; then, the E. coli outbreak happened. They rebounded, mostly because I couldn't resist the siren call of a sofritas burrito with guac... and then there was a norovirus outbreak. But now that they've been in the clear health-code wise for a few years, they might just be able to win us back forever, because, friends, they're making their queso available at locations nationwide.

More: 10 Reasons we’ll keep eating at Chipotle no matter what

The queso first popped up at the Chipotle Next Kitchen in New York earlier in the year, then spread to SoCal and Colorado, and people were already going crazy over the stuff. Unlike the gloppy orange nacho cheese you get at most fast-food places and football stadiums, theirs is made without additives, added colors, flavors or preservatives, just like the rest of their menu.

More: 16 Copycat Chipotle recipes almost better than the real thing

Their queso is made with aged cheddar cheese, tomatillos, tomatoes and peppers and will cost $1.25 to add it to your entrée or $5.25 for a large side of the stuff. Apparently, queso has been the most-requested item at the chain for years, so it'll be interesting to see how people react to the chain now that they serve it.

More: Chipotle's actual guacamole recipe in 7 easy steps

I've always had a fondness for the radioactive orange "cheese" you can get at school cafeterias and gas stations around the country, so I'm definitely excited to try this gourmet, all-natural option. Looks like Chipotle and I are officially back on again.

It looks like Adam Levine has a whole lot more than the upcoming Season 13 premiere of The Voice to look forward to — in an Instagram post on Wednesday, the Maroon 5 frontman's wife, Behati Prinsloo, casually announced that the sweet couple is expecting again.

Of course, Levine and Prinsloo's new baby will be in good company. Aside from some pretty stellar parents, the little one joins the couple's one-year-old daughter, Dusty Rose.

Although Levine hasn't publicly responded to the announcement yet, it's likely only a matter of time before he gushes about his expanding family. At the rocker's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in February of this year (where Dusty made her adorable debut), Levine couldn't contain his pride.

"I have a daughter, I have the most beautiful wife in the entire world. I am one of the luckiest people who's ever lived and it has nothing to do with me. It has to do with the people who love me the most and so, I thank all of those people. I can't do it individually, but I thank you all," he said.

Prinsloo is equally over the moon about their growing brood.

In a recent interview with People, the model-mommy explained, "I love Adam, and when you get married and you fall in love with someone, you think that there's no greater love than that love. And then you have a baby, and it's just next-level love."

Both Levine and Prinsloo have even gotten tattoos to celebrate this "next-level" love. In May, Levine had "True Love" inked across his knuckles. As for Prinsloo, she had their daughter's name, Dusty, tattooed on her left arm. Perhaps the new addition will go on the right, then?

Congrats to the happy couple on this latest chapter in their lives. Levine-Prinsloo, party of four!

What You Need to Know About Changes to Cervical Cancer Screenings

$

When it comes to the testing done in the OB-GYN's office, we know we want it done as quickly as possible, but aside from that, do we really know what's happening down there? And how often do we need to get Pap smears? The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has weighed in on this, publishing a draft of new guidelines for cervical cancer screening.

They say clinicians should screen for cervical cancer in women ages 21 to 29 every three years via a Pap test. Women ages 30 to 65 need a Pap test every three years or a Human Papillomavirus testing alone every five years — not both tests, as is currently in the guidelines.

Women younger than 21 and older than 65 (and those without a cervix) who have been screened do not need the tests.

More: Will This AI Robot Replace Your Annual Pap Smear?

A Pap smear assesses cells that are scraped off the cervix that may become abnormal; an HPV test is a DNA test that tells you if HPV is present, and if so, what types.

The recommendations do not apply to women at high risk for cervical cancer, including those who have been diagnosed with a high-grade precancerous cervical lesion or have a weakened immune system (such as women who are HIV-positive).

“The Task Force looked at the evidence on the effectiveness of different screening tests and intervals based on age, and found that after age 30, the Pap test and HPV tests are both effective for cervical cancer screening,” said Task Force member Dr. Maureen G. Phipps in an emailed press release for the new guidelines. “Women ages 30 to 65, therefore, have a choice between the Pap test every three years or HPV test every five years.”

More: 7 things your gynecologist wants you to know

Dr. Stephanie Blank, director of women’s health at Mount Sinai Downtown Chelsea Center and a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said that one of the biggest differences between the new guidelines and the former recommendations is that the new guidelines recommend against co-testing (having an HPV test and a Pap test at the same time) in women between 30 and 65.

Currently, the task force recommends screening women age 21 to 65 years old with a Pap test every three years. They recommend women 30 to 65 to screen with a combination of Pap and HPV every five years.

More: 4 Ways to Educate Yourself More on "the Silent Killer," Cervical Cancer

“However, the new guidelines are recommending Pap alone with cytology every three years or HPV testing alone every five years, but not both together,” Blank explained in an emailed statement provided by Mount Sinai. “The rationale in these guidelines is that doing these two test tests together did not cause more deaths.”

Here's How ADHD Totally Helps Fuel a Creative Fire

$

ADHD is my superpower.

Don’t ask me to change the oil on my truck. No matter how many times my husband patiently demonstrates the steps, I’m just not interested enough to stay focused on the task. My executive function skills are adorably horrid, so I can’t make it from point A to point B without an extremely detailed to-do list. And sometimes my mouth works faster than my brain, which means I might interrupt during a conversion and not even realize I did it. So maybe there are a few negatives, but why beat myself down when I can build myself up?

ADHD is my superpower. This is how ADHD turns me into a creative badass.

1. Hyper-focus is my friend

Hyper-focus is like the polar opposite of trying to remember the steps for that oil change I am never going to do because I don’t care. If I am hyper-focused, it means I am doing something I love and know I can rock the final product. I wrote a book in a year on three-hours of sleep a night because it had to be finished. Wanna go hang out tonight minus the kiddos? Sorry, I have to finish this essay I’m working on. My child wants cereal for dinner because Mama’s working and she knows deadlines mean I don’t come up for air until I hit "send" on an email to the editor.

More: For One Woman, ADHD Isn't a Problem — It's the Reason She Excels

2. All the plates in the air

I never have just one thing to do. My normal is juggling all the plates at the same time and still kicking ass. Right now, I’m homeschooling my autistic daughter, freelancing my booty off, pitching and writing for various outlets, working on the behind-the-scenes for a new podcast I am launching soon called The Byline, trying to get back on a regular workout schedule and the rest of the WAHM basics, like keeping the apartment clean enough to earn my adulting sticker for the day.

OK, it’s a solid "maybe" on that last one. The bottom line is that I am the most productive and creative when I have everything going on at once, which is exactly why I loved working as a newspaper reporter as much as I love what I do now.

3. Under pressure

Speaking of deadlines, I live for them. Seriously. I had three months to write a 30-page paper in college for a required religion class — and it was the only grade for the class, so hello, pressure! Did I start it the minute it was assigned? Nope. I have learned since my diagnosis that time is my enemy because it gives me the chance to second-, third- and fourth-guess my writing. Anytime I started early on a paper, I’d end up scrapping it at the eleventh hour and starting over from scratch two days before it was due, anyway. For a person with ADHD, procrastination is an art that leaves us relaxed until we realize it’s 48 hours to go time, so we produce and thrive on the deadline rush because we have no other choice.

Oh, and yeah, I got the A.

4. Dude, where’s my car?

I have been known to lose my car in mall parking lots. I never remember where I parked or what door I entered, so sometimes, the nice mall security guards take pity on me and drive me around until I scream triumphantly that my car is right there, where I said it was. But what I miss from the big picture, I make up for with the details. I see the shades of color that will add to a character description. I hear the nuances and rhythm of speech and conversation that will make a story come alive when passing by strangers on the street. Just don’t ask me where I put my car keys. I’ll find them eventually.

5. No time for doubts

Because I operate best with multiple projects going at the same time, I don’t have the time to waste feeling sorry for myself when an editor passes on a pitch or turns down a completed essay. I can't throw in the towel because my book wasn’t an NYT best-seller. And I refuse to believe I’m busting my ass for anything short of making it happen. The minute I get a rejection, I check my contact list to see which outlet is a fit for the piece I’m trying to place, and I dive right back in with a new pitch. This is how I recently placed an essay about my late father with two years' worth of rejections. I kept pushing because I know that every rejection will bring me one step closer to the next publication and making my dreams come true.

She posted a photo of her and her friend Francia Raisa in adjacent hospital beds holding hands, disclosing that Raisa was her kidney donor.

Why I'm Not Getting My Kid the New iPhone

$

0

Today is the day Apple geeks have been waiting for: the release of the latest iPhone. Actually, make that three new iPhones: the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus and the cream of the crop, the iPhone X.

If you care about these things, you’ll be excited about the iPhone X’s new fancy bits: wireless charging, facial recognition, an edge-to-edge display and — drumroll please — no home button. You might not be so excited about the $1,000 price tag. My son, however, is quite excited.

More: 3 Reasons I Don't Let My Kid Play With My Phone

Personally, I’m still trying to figure out how to take more photos on my iPhone SE without getting that annoying "not enough storage" message (just as I have all the kids in the one spot with their eyes open). This particular model was only released by Apple last year, but it looks like a brick compared to my friends' sleek, sliver-thin iPhone 7s. The fancy features of the new iPhone would be lost on me, and I sure as hell have better things to spend $1,000 on.

My children, however, continue to struggle with the concept of things costing money — as well as the fact that sleek, sliver-thin gadgets cost far too much money. My daughter has just turned 7, so sure, she's excused. But her big brother turns 10 soon, and he seems to think that with double digits should come major perks, such as his own smartphone. The average age for a kid to get their first cellphone is 10.3 years, so I'm prepared for these pleas. Right now, my son has a used and refurbished iPod Touch, which is fine for playing games and sending me rows of poop emojis when he's at his dad's house.

"I think I need a smartphone," he said recently. "Lots of kids in my class have them."

"What do you need a smartphone for?" I asked him. "You don't go anywhere without me or your dad. And you can send me poop emojis from your iPod Touch."

He shrugged. "Lots of kids in my class have them."

More: So Your Kid Wants a Cellphone: How Young Is Too Young?

This is my biggest issue with kids and smartphones. It's not about wireless charging or facial recognition or the absence of a home button. It's about a status symbol. It's about having what everyone else has, regardless of the price tag.

I don't know what the late Mr. Apple himself, Steve Jobs, would think about my son getting a smartphone at the age of 10, but I do know what his longtime rival Bill Gates thinks. Earlier this year, the Microsoft mogul gave an interview in which he revealed he didn't let any of his children get their own cellphone until they were 14 years old — even though "they complained other kids got them earlier." And that's a basic cellphone he's talking about, not a smartphone.

As someone who makes a living online, I'm keen for my kids to be exposed to digital tools and have the chance to develop technology skills. At this point, they do this at school as well as at home, where we have an iMac and a Kindle as well as the secondhand iPods. Isn't that more than enough?

I'm prepared for the impassioned pleas for the latest gadgets as the kids get older and more susceptible to peer pressure. And I'll admit that, as someone who grew up in the '80s, it's hard for me to resist the temptation to wax lyrical about the joys of climbing trees, riding bikes until the sun went down and drawing on actual paper instead of an iPad screen. I must try, though, because we live in a different world now: a world in which kids' noses are often buried in their smartphones. But that's not their fault. This is the way things are, and denying it won't accomplish much.

More: My Teen Won't Use a Smartphone — Will He Still Have a Social Life?

As with so many aspects of parenting, it all comes down to balance. My kids will, at some stage, want to use — even need to use — their gadgets for more than emojis and Minecraft. Before I know it, they'll even have university papers or conference calls for their job. It's highly unlikely my kids will be the only ones in their class to start high school without a smartphone — a quick straw poll of other parents confirms this — but when I do think they're mature enough to use (and look after) one, I'll consider it. But it definitely won't be the iPhone X.
