Nick Viall & Vanessa Grimaldi Call Off Engagement Because Relationships Are Hard

Welp, Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi have officially gone the way of all but, like, three Bachelor couples: They just announced their breakup.

More: If You Want to Sleep With Nick Viall, Here's Your Chance

"It's with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement," Viall and Grimaldi said in a joint statement. "We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what. This hasn't been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other."

More: Nick Viall & Vanessa Grimaldi Might Actually Love Each Other

It's been a little over five months since the finale of The Bachelor aired, showing Viall and Grimaldi getting engaged. They were engaged for about six weeks prior to the episode airing, which means they made it almost seven months, most of which they spent together in Los Angeles, where Viall lives. They've also gone to Grimaldi's hometown of Montreal to see her family several times. Differences in where they wanted to live were a huge point of contention for them when they were on the show, but we don't know whether that was a factor in their breakup.

After Viall's bid on Dancing With the Stars post-Bachelor, they kind of stepped out of the spotlight. They were captured several times by the paparazzi on adorable dates all over Hollywood, sometimes just the two of them and sometimes with their famous friends. It looked glam, but a glam life isn't enough to hold a reality TV relationship together. Sigh.

Of Course Women Have More Stamina Than Men (& Now Science Backs That Up)

In a surprise to no woman, a recent study found women have more stamina than men. (Cue 1990s stand-up comedy routine on men's sexual performance shortcomings.)

While men may be stronger physically, the research journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism found that women have significantly more muscle endurance than their male counterparts. This means that the women involved were much less tired after "natural, dynamic muscle exercises" than men of comparable age and athletic ability.

More: Feelin' Out of Shape? Maybe It's Time to Move to One of America's Most Fittest Cities

"We've known for some time that women are less fatigable than men during isometric muscle tests — static exercises where joints don't move, such as holding a weight — but we wanted to find out if that's true during more dynamic and practical everyday movements," Assistant Professor Brian Dalton, one of the authors of the study, said in a news release. "And the answer is pretty definitive: Women can outlast men by a wide margin."

Researchers conducted the experiment by having participants flex their foot against several sensors as fast as they could 200 times, measuring and recording the speed, power and torque of their movements, as well as the electrical activity of their muscles. Although only the calf muscle group was tested in this study, Dalton said that he would expect similar results with other parts of the body.

"We know from previous research that for events like ultra-trail running, males may complete them faster but females are considerably less tired by the end," he added in the news release. "If ever an ultra-ultra-marathon is developed, women may well dominate in that arena."

Not big on ultra-ultra marathons? These findings are still relevant for you, as they could be used to help design work environments that minimize fatigue and improve overall productivity. You probably heard of her when you purchased your first Destiny's Child album, but these days, Kelly Rowland is up to a whole lot more than creating catchy music. The 36-year old mom of adorable son Titan has been busy to say the least. She has appeared on the hit show Empire, been a judge on The Voice Australia and somehow managed to find the time to write a stellar book full of advice for new moms titled, Whoa, Baby! Most recently, she has partnered with Band-Aid as a spokesperson for their Stick With It campaign because she is passionate about helping and motivating women to stick to their goals and passions — whatever they may be.

So how does a mom with so much on her plate manage to accomplish so much and still maintain a physically and emotionally healthy lifestyle? Well, we were lucky enough to ask her exactly that.

SheKnows: What’s the first thing you do in the morning?

Kelly Rowland: The first thing I do in the morning is pray or meditate.

SK: What’s your go-to healthy breakfast?

KR: Oatmeal with fresh berries.

SK: Do you meditate, journal or have any other sort of emotional wellness routine?

KR: No matter the situation, I stay focused and motivated on my goals because that’s the way I was raised.

So this partnership with Band-Aid brand was perfect because our mottos are the same... stick with it.

SK: Can you describe your workout routine? Does it change seasonally?

KR: I typically like to train with the mentality of a high-performance athlete. I put in the work and do what it takes to be successful. A typical workout routine consists of sprint-based training combined with strength moves two days a week. Along with the balance of total-body workouts that challenge my core and shape my body twice weekly.

SK: Can you tell me a little bit about your female community — do you have friends who are also moms who you lean on for support regarding the challenges of parenting?

KR: I have a great female support system. We encourage each other because we all face some of the same difficulties. We all experience mommy guilt. It’s always great to have an uplifting support system.

KR: There is no place for fear. Stay informed, but also be smart enough to decipher what is noise and what is real. Always remembering that love can cast out all hate. I have made a commitment to teach my son love, self-respect, the way of the world and boundaries.

Whitney Port Reveals Struggle With Breastfeeding in Emotional Video

Whitney Port is not a fan of the "fake it 'til you make it" approach to breastfeeding, and it's so refreshing.
The erstwhile Hills star recently admitted in a powerful video that she's struggling to nurse her brand-new son, Sonny Sanford. She posted the poignant, tearful video to Instagram yesterday — with the hope of helping other exhausted moms feel less alone.
As heart-wrenching as the video is, it's also truly inspiring; it's not every day we see a celebrity parent's refusal to put on the serene happy face society encourages them (and really all of us parents) to wear. And if you're a mom going through similar challenges with breastfeeding — or postpartum depression or you name it — it can be beyond reassuring to know you're not the only one barely keeping your head above water. So many of us have been there.
In her video, Port bursts into tears when an interviewer asks her if everything "felt like it was working out" in the hospital before she brought Sonny home. Her face says it all: She's exhausted and more than a little afraid.
Whitney Port

Whitney Port

"I'm not obsessed with breastfeeding," Port admits in her caption. "There. I said it. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fact that my baby is getting all the amazing nutrients from my milk and that I am literally giving him life, but it has been quite the challenge. A challenge I didn't feel prepared for at all. In this Chapter of I Love My Baby But... I discuss my trying journey through breastfeeding. I have gained so much confidence just through the support you guys have given me, so if any of this rings true or you have any tips, I am all ears. We mothers have to be there for each other. I sincerely believe this community is what has given me the confidence to feel I am not doing anything wrong. Yes, there are times the opinions and judgements of other [sic] seep in, but then I remember I have you guys and it makes all the difference. I am really looking forward to reading all the comments and tips this week. I need them more than ever..."
We won't lie. We braced ourselves for the usual "lactation is the only way" mom-shamers, but we were pleasantly surprised by the compassionate, supportive responses of solidarity and encouragement that flooded in from Port's fans.
One commenter wrote, "Watching your video this morning made me relate 100%. My baby girl is 10 days old and I had an emotional break down the first weekend we were home as I came across challenges with breastfeeding. I kept looking down on myself and thinking I was a horrible mom, but my husband would look at me and tell me, 'Do you see how happy she is and how much she loves you even if you're providing your breast milk through a bottle?' No matter how your little one is fed, all that matters at the end of the day is that they're happy, loved, healthy and growing."

Another told Port, "Proud of you for doing it despite what feels like everyone else having a different opinion. I breastfed far longer than I ever intended to because of online support, and then meeting some mothers in person. I really changed the way I viewed being a mother and I started to just follow what my instincts were telling me, which all happened to be what made my children thrive the best and be the happiest."
All we can say is: yes. When parents aren't afraid to be vulnerable and open up, it's surprising how much real dialogue — and even real bonding — can finally happen. Kudos to Port for being so authentic — and for being a terrific mom to Sonny, no matter how their breastfeeding journey turns out. Fed is best, period.

Despite Differences, Jay Leno Supports Jimmy Kimmel's Family in Hard Times

In case you've been completely disconnected from the world since, oh, about 2010, Jimmy Kimmel and Jay Leno are not friends.

More: Jimmy Kimmel Gets Emotional Talking About His Newborn Son's Heart Surgery

They're kind of rivals in that they both host late-night talk shows, even though their shows have only been in competing time slots for a few years. But Leno has been a subject of Kimmel's ridicule for a long time, on the air and off.

Now, however, they seem to have buried the hatchet. And there's a really sweet reason for why these two longtime enemies have learned to get along: Kimmel's baby son, who has had health struggles since he was born.

More: Jimmy Kimmel: Stop Pranking Our Kids, You Sick Bastard

Back in May, Kimmel announced on his show that he and his wife, Molly McNearey, had welcomed their son, William John Kimmel, and that baby William had undergone surgery almost immediately after his birth to repair a congenital heart defect. That's a terrifying thing for a new parent to have to go through, and even amid their feud, Leno could recognize that. So he reached out to Kimmel, and the two have settled their past differences, Kimmel shared.

"Jay and I have made peace," he explained on a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter's "Awards Chatter" podcast. "After my son had his operation, he called me and he was very nice."

Kimmel continued, "What he did was, you can't argue with his success, his longevity." He then added a nice compliment for Leno, saying, "I will say, when I was in high school, going to college, he was one of my all-time favorite comics."

Jamie Foxx & Katie Holmes Are Doing Really Great

You may or may not have heard some recent news concerning one Taylor Swift, something about a snake and some music, yadda yadda. I am here to tell you that there is more important news to worry about, and that is the truly perfect relationship of Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes.

Yes, these two lovebirds, who keep their relationship solidly under wraps, are still going strong. They still haven't confirmed that they're officially together, even though, like, everyone knows that they're officially together. But they keep doing things like being spotted at the same time at the same shopping center, even though they don't actually hang out together because what if someone saw?

"They are really happy," a source close to the definite, real couple told E! News. "It's easy and they are for sure very much in love. They are doing their thing as usual and keeping a very, very low profile."

Still, they're keeping things on the down-low for the foreseeable future, seriously disappointing all of us lovers of love who just want to see them happy and together.

"Katie and Jamie will not at any time talk about their union," the source said. "They like their life private."

Ugh, why can't they just talk about it already? We just want to enjoy it with them. Is that too much to ask?

Little People, Big World Star Body-Shamed for Posting Baby Bump Photo

We love seeing photos of healthy, happy pregnant women. But according to a lot of horrified haters on the internet (the same people who are probably keeping such phrases as "oh my stars" and "get me my smelling salts" in the American lexicon) there is nothing lovely about a pregnant belly — at least not the belly of Audrey Roloff, barre instructor and cast member of Little People, Big World.

Audrey Roloff IG

Audrey Roloff IG

Roloff posted a profile of her "#almost39weeks" belly to her Facebook page. In the pic, she's posing in front of a bathroom mirror. In the caption, she asked her fans, "Does it get any lower?!?"

And yet, the vultures of the internet flocked to the photo with messages of disgust and shame. Roloff's comments section turned into a swamp of responses, such as, “I love this family but I think it’s a disgrace to show your body... My opinion. It should be for your husband’s eyes only.”

Um, what year is this? 1817? Are we worried about potentially viewing Roloff's ankles too?

Another annoyed commenter asked, "Why do young mothers-to-be want to show their naked bellies?”

And there were plenty of charming one-liners such as, “I am so sick of you showing your belly,” and “Audrey you are not the first person to have a baby!!!” Wow.

Fortunately, a few supportive commenters jumped into the muck to praise Roloff.
"When I was young there was so much shaming, old wives tales, secrets and lies. I think what a lot of young people are doing now is to help get rid of the darkness, stigma, and lies around so many 'normal' processes." Damn straight.

Here's the "offensive" pic, by the way. Cover your eyes if you need to.

The remarkable Roloff had a great, grinning response to the hater faction. She changed her profile picture later the same day to a photo of herself beaming, cross-legged on her bed, wearing — gasp! — a comfy bra and underwear, with her belly front and center.

Atta girl. Don't let the shamers get you down.

Roloff and her husband, Jeremy, are expecting a baby girl around Sept. 1. They celebrated Roloff's baby shower with loved ones on Aug. 18 and recently chatted with Us Weekly about their pregnancy journey.

"I’d say we’re very excited, but there are definitely some nerves that come along with it,” Roloff told Us. “At this point, we’re just trying to relax and bring some calm back into our life... We’re looking forward to spending these last few days just the two of us.”

"We’re very, very close and sometimes we do quote the odd Titanic line back and forth to each other," Winslet told Glamour. "Because only we can, and we find it really funny."

They're not the only ones. We find it really funny, too. Can we please be in on the joke?

In all seriousness, though, the friendship that Winslet and DiCaprio have maintained for so many years is truly too good and pure for this world.

"You don’t even want to know the last conversation we had, because it was so funny and made me laugh so much," Winslet said. "We found ourselves saying to each other, ‘Can you imagine if the world really knew the stupid things we say?’ I’m not going to tell you what we actually talk about, but yeah."

Ugh, we wish they would tell us.

They're not the only ones with a friendship that can last way longer than the Titanic's voyage. DiCaprio, Winslet and their Titanic villain, Billy Zane, all reunited last month for a climate change fundraiser DiCaprio hosted in St. Tropez, France. High School Principal Institutes Sexist & Size-Biased Dress Code, Then 'Apologizes'

A South Carolina high school principal has apparently lost touch with reality.

On Wednesday, Heather Taylor, principal of Stratford High School in South Carolina, held some, um, uplifting assemblies with 9th and 10th graders (and by "uplifting assemblies," we mean "total shamefest horror shows") to chat about the school's dress code.

Unfortunately for Taylor, her shocking announcement — in which she essentially fat-shames female students  — was caught in an audio recording that was subsequently shared with WCBD news.

In the announcement, Taylor tells the girls of the school that they're forbidden to wear leggings "unless you are a size 0 or 2." What? What?

More: Sixth-Grader Fights Back Against School's Sexist Dress Code

Principal Taylor allegedly continued, "I’ve told you this before, I’m going to tell you this now, unless you are a size zero or two and you wear something like that, even though you’re not fat, you look fat."

Not surprisingly, her words infuriated the school community — and the internet. Parents began (rightfully) berating Taylor on social media, calling her out for her blatant body-shaming of children.

One student, Allison Veazy, told WCBD she is in shock about Taylor's vicious message.

“It was really hurtful, 'cause I felt like my size made me look disgusting towards someone in the clothes that I wear,” Veazy said. “I wear leggings outside of school and I wear leggings when I go and hang out with my friends, and to think that someone would think that I look like a stuffed sausage — that was kind of hurtful.”

One mother of an 11th-grader, Lacy Thompson-Harper, posted a Facebook message (shared with Scary Mommy) about the principal's remarks.

“Body shaming teenage girls is uncalled for, inappropriate and unprofessional. When I spoke with her, she talked around the issue, and made excuse after excuse, effectively calling all of the students liars,” Thompson-Harper said. “This has upset many, many more students than just those in the 10th grade. My daughter is in the 11th grade, and is livid. She has been ridiculed by students for her body, and shouldn’t be subjected to it from teachers. By the end of the conversation with Mrs. Taylor, she agreed to apologize to the 11th and 12th grade students during their assemblies, and to call back both the 9th and 10th grade students and apologize. Is this enough? I don’t know. But, I feel that parents need to know what was said by a woman who is an educator, and is supposed to be a role model for these kids."

And Taylor did indeed apologize (somewhat) today; she shared with People that she met with the student body and explained that her intention was not “to hurt or offend any of my students in any way.”

But Thompson-Harper isn't sure an apology is enough to make up for the harm done by Taylor's crass comments. “Right now," she wrote, "I’m a very angry parent, with a very angry daughter.”

We wish this were an isolated incident, but we're hearing more and more about antiquated, sexist dress codes that target young women — and it's not just happening in schools.

Recently (and notoriously), girls wearing basic Spandex leggings were turned away from their United Flight because of their "inappropriate" attire. United's response to widespread backlash after the incident was to harp on the fact that these were children of United employees. Still, we're pretty sure the keyword in that sentence — and any sentence policing young girls' choices of attire — is "children." Do we need to hire Chelsea Clinton to say it for us? Just let kids be kids, please.

Are At-Home STI Tests the Future of Sexual Health?

$

0

As someone whose partner has several other partners (some of whom also have other partners), it’s essential for my health — and peace of mind — to get regular sexually transmitted infection screenings. I actually have a running task on my calendar that reminds me to ask my doctor for one every three months.

But not everyone is lucky enough to have an affordable, available GP or OB-GYN to run these tests several times a year. This has real consequences for both people’s sexual health and public health in general. With the rise of incurable gonorrhoea and increasing rates of other STIs in America, it’s more important than ever not only to practice safer sex, but also to get tested regularly.

More: Untreatable "Super Gonorrhoea" Spreading Through Oral Sex

I recently spoke with Ursula Hessenflow, co-founder of MyLabBox, about some of the trends she has seen when it comes to STI testing, shame and trust between partners. MyLabBox is an online STI testing service operating in the U.S. and other countries around the world.

“When I entered back in the dating scene,” Hessenflow tells me, “I realized that this is a conversation that people are not having. I tried to bring it up with friends, and when it did come up, it was awkward. People are very put off by talking about STIs.”

And when it actually comes up with new sexual partners? “People just getting to know each other rely a lot on that trust factor and don’t get tested together, or even ask if they’ve been tested.”

Especially between new partners, sex is already an awkward topic. But bringing STIs and safer sex concerns into the mix is often considered a mood-killer, a turn-off. Thanks to romantic comedies and romance novels, we expect first sexual encounters with new partners to be magical, romantic and mind-blowing. And even though the reality rarely meets the expectations of the myth, we still, somehow, are afraid to talk about desires, needs and concerns (including health concerns) until we are way more involved with someone.

More: How to Tell Your Partner You'd Like an Open Relationship

One of the reasons that might be is because sex in general still has lots of stigma attached to it; STIs even more. Registered nurse Nicole Pasquino, professional practice leader at Options for Sexual Health in British Columbia, Canada, and sexual health nursing professor at the University of British Columbia, explains that “if testing were more common and accessible, for example through online STI testing, and more people had the experience of STI testing being part of their normal health care routine, it absolutely could lessen the shame and stigma of having that initial conversation with a new partner.”

Simplifying and normalizing STI testing is one of the main goals of MyLabBox. “We want to make it as acceptable and simple as brushing your teeth,” Hessenflow says. “We even have a partner kit; we encourage people to test together.” The benefits are obvious: no awkward conversation with an unknown clinician, no having to visit another location to undergo testing and no need to see a clinician again to discuss the results.

But one of the things that struck me as most positive about online testing is how it removes potential barriers for members of the LGBTQ communities. I’m lucky in that I have an absolutely professional, sex-positive doctor who knows about my polyamorous relationships, my bisexuality and my kink activities.

More: How a Hairbrush Changed My Sex Life

Not everyone has that chance, and many LGBTQ friends and acquaintances speak of traumatic experiences with clinicians who judged them, made assumptions about them and even refused them services.

Something similar happened to Hessenflow. “I had an interaction with an OB-GYN who told me I wasn’t particularly at risk when I asked to be tested. There are misperceptions that you may not be at risk based on your age, marital status, etc.”

Pasquino explains that LGBTQ individuals can face unique barriers when accessing health care services, and STI testing has unfortunately been no different.

"There are assumptions about who they are having sex with, the types of sex they are having, that they are having unsafe sex, trying to access services with a name different than what is on their medical insurance plan, and assumptions about the types of services they need, just to mention a few," she says. "There are also many LGBTQI+ people who don’t seek services due to the barriers such as judgment, negative past experiences, shame and fear.”

An option like MyLabBox or the one we have here in British Columbia, GetCheckedOnline, “will hopefully not only allow care providers to connect with more people in underserved communities, but will also allow those patients who have experienced barriers to have a new way to access sexual health services,” Pasquino adds.

However, despite its enormous benefits, online STI testing is not a panacea. It does fulfill a need — mostly that of bringing sexual health on par with other routine health care and of reducing stigma. But it is not a replacement for talking to a doctor when symptoms appear.

Pasquino notes that from a clinical standpoint, online testing is most suitable for patients who are not experiencing any symptoms.

"Anytime a patient is experiencing symptoms, they need to see a care provider for assessment,” she adds.

Shame notwithstanding, if you notice symptoms and suspect an STI, you should always make an appointment with your GP or visit a walk-in clinic to get prompt treatment.

As online STI testing becomes more common and more affordable, it will become easier to discuss sexual health with our friends, partners and health care providers. Hopefully, soon we will mention STI testing as openly as mammograms or Pap tests and encourage each other to look after our sexual health as much as we do heart, breast or mental health.

Is Your Yoga Mat Messing With Your Fertility Treatment?

$

Is your yoga mat or upholstered furniture making it harder to get pregnant? According to researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, maybe.

The study, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, found that women with higher concentrations of a common flame retardant in their urine had less of a chance of getting pregnant. The chemical organophosphate flame retardants are typically used in polyurethane foam and are found in many products, like baby products, upholstered furniture and yoga and gym mats. This is the first study to look into this link.

More: Knowing When To Draw the Line on Fertility Treatments

PFRs, as these particular flame retardants are abbreviated, were actually introduced as a safer alternative to another flame retardant — PentaBDE — which was phased out more than a decade ago, but has be found to cause hormone disruption in animal studies. Previous studies have shown that PFRs can be released into the air and dust from furniture and other products, affecting indoor environments.

In this study, researchers tested urine samples from 211 women undergoing in vitro fertilization who were enrolled in a larger project attempting to determine how chemicals and lifestyle choices affect reproductive health. Metabolized versions of PFRs were found in the urine of more than 80 percent of the participants, and those with higher concentrations had around a 40 percent less chance of pregnancy and a successful birth.

MoreMy Male Partner Won't Agree to a Sperm Analysis — Now What?

"Couples undergoing IVF and trying to improve their chances of success by reducing their exposure to environmental chemicals may want to opt for products that are flame-retardant free," senior author Russ Hauser, Frederick Lee Hisaw professor of reproductive physiology and acting chair for the Department of Environmental Health said in a news release.

More research is needed on the impact of these chemicals in everyday household products and on the potential impact of male partners’ exposure to PFRs.

The main takeaway: Women undergoing IVF treatments may want to stay away from flame-retardant products — and it might not be a bad idea for the rest of us, either.

Most Memorable MTV VMA Moments Since the First Show in 1984

Since the MTV Video Music Awards debuted in 1984, viewers could always count on one thing: Someone would do something shocking and/or totally inappropriate at some point during the ceremony. The best part is you never know exactly who is going to pop off. Will the best moment be an incredible performance? Will it be someone getting into a fight? Will there be blood involved? Will the players still have a career afterward? A marriage? The VMAs are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get and who's nuts. We've rounded up some of the most memorable moments in VMA history since the show's beginnings way back when.

1984: Madonna humps the stage in her VMA debut

Madonna 1984 VMAs

In retrospect, this is nothing compared to Madonna's later performances, but at the time, at the very first MTV VMAs in 1984, Madonna dry humping the stage in front of every music exec in the industry, being beamed into the living rooms of every Middle American TV set, was shocking — and it definitely set the tone for what kind of show the VMAs wanted to be.

1991: Prince demonstrates all 23 positions in a one-night stand

Performing his song "Gett Off" from the Diamonds and Pearls album, Prince pretty much staged an orgy for VMA viewers. But with all the simulated sex going on around the stage, no one could take their eyes off Prince himself, both because of his incredible dance moves and (probably mostly) because his butt was literally hanging out of his pants thanks to an artfully-placed cutout.

RuPaul and Milton Berle were paired together because RuPaul is a drag queen and Berle used to do comedy in drag — and that's where their similarities end. RuPaul started their bit by going totally off-book and insulting Berle by saying the legend now wears diapers. What the audience didn't know, and RuPaul revealed in her book, is that Berle allegedly groped her butt and breasts backstage.

Behind the Steep Decline in Condom Usage

It looks like condoms may be falling out of fashion as the birth control method of choice. Newly released data reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics found that 24 percent of women and 34 percent of men said they’d used condoms during their last sexual intercourse, with 55 to 60 percent of both groups stating that condoms were their only form of contraception.

Researchers behind the study focused on an estimated 9,300 men and 11,300 women between the ages of 15 to 44. The time range for data collection was from the 2011-2015 U.S. National Survey of Family Growth, according to HealthDay.

MoreWoman has the ultimate response to men who say "I'm too big for condoms"

The data is especially disheartening for the researchers because, while other forms of contraception can act as birth control, condoms also protect from sexually transmitted infections.

“The use of condoms is a public health issue,” said Casey Copen, according to HealthDay. Copen is a statistician at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.

More: People Assume I Have STIs Because I’m Polyamorous

Copen continued saying that STIs can lead to long-term consequences, such as infertility, and that condoms, when used consistently and correctly, reduce the risk of HIV and STIs.

According to the CDC, 20 million new cases of STIs are diagnosed annually.

The data also showed that 25 percent of women and 33 percent of men used a combination of contraceptives to lessen their risks of both STIs and in heterosexual relationships, the risk of unwanted pregnancies.

More: Buying condoms is now literally as simple as pushing a button

The researchers behind the data hope that the numbers will be a call to action to increase more availability and information flow on the importance of condom use.

7 Lies People Tell You About Newborns

$

Having a newborn baby is a bundle of emotions and a boatload of work. There are a thousand new things to learn the moment a baby is born, and perhaps more than any other rite of passage, everyone in the entire world seems to have an opinion about what to expect and how you should proceed.

More: 3 Things I Planned for My Birth That Definitely Did Not Go as Planned

It’s funny, though, how wrong people can be in their well-meaning advice. Here are seven of the biggest lies people tell you when you have a newborn.

1. "They smell good"

Not unlike your golden retriever, babies smell good when you wash them. They don’t naturally just smell great on their own. And you’re not allowed to bathe them until their umbilical cord falls off, which could take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Newborn babies ball their fists and toes up, which means clammy hands that might have trapped lint or dust or cat hair or who knows what in them. Factor that in with stale milk or formula, and it’s quite possible your baby’s hands might smell like cheese. And I’m not talking about aged cheddar — more like Limburger (Google “why do my baby’s hands smell like cheese?” for a fun read). Plus, whose crotch wouldn’t stink after pooping 10 times a day.

2. "If you’re lucky, your newborn will sleep through the night"

The most common question you’re likely to get asked about your new bundle of joy is whether the little one is sleeping through the night. The truth is, while a small percentage of brand-new babies might sleep for longer stints at night, newborns aren’t hardwired to sleep more than two to three hours at a clip. Their stomachs don’t hold enough food to sustain them for longer than that without needing to eat more, and their sleep cycles are months away from operating like ours do. Stop asking this question, folks!

3. "You can lean on your family for help"

My parents were so excited to welcome their first grandchild to the world, they could hardly stand it. I was so looking forward to having them come over and help take care of my newborn to provide some much-needed relief in those first few days and weeks when sleep is a distant dream and every noise the baby makes is terrifying. Instead, my family came by regularly, but just sat and stared at the baby, often interrupting our routine or his naptime. While I was grateful that they brought prepared food a couple of times, they didn’t offer to hold the baby, feed him, diaper him or rock him to sleep, let alone help with other chores.

More: Weird Things You Never Talked About Before Having Kids

4. "Breastfeeding will come to you naturally"

Of course, breastfeeding is as old as human creation, and so it’s natural in that respect, but there’s nothing natural or easy about thrusting a brand-new baby and a brand-new mom into what can be a complex and stressful process. Baby is just learning how to do everything and needs to learn how to latch and feed as well, and it doesn’t always happen automatically. The breast or chest-feeding parent has never done this before, and there are a lot of mechanics that go into making sure it’s painless and productive. It can often feel like the most frustrating and unnatural thing in the world.

5. "You'll learn how to become high-functioning on little to no sleep"

I suppose it’s possible some people can take care of a newborn and run a marathon and write the next great American novel, but I imagine most people don’t feel that way. In fact, it’s really hard to take care of a newborn and still function in other aspects of your life. You will forget to feed the cat or pay the electric bill or put underwear on when you go out (guilty as charged). You will be clumsy and forgetful and many other things will fall to the wayside because you are running on little sleep and are at the beck and call of a tiny, demanding human. Every bit of common sense and wakefulness you have will go toward keeping said tiny human alive.

6. "Newborn poop is odorless"

Perhaps the person who started this myth wore their taste buds right off their tongue from sucking on too many lemons. Newborn poop — while different from adult poop in that it is less solid and resembles something that might, say, be produced by a duck, still stinks. Whether your baby is breastfed (Grey Poupon poop) or formula fed (Play-Doh poop), the excrement still smells a lot more like crap than it does daisies. It only gets worse as they move into solid food, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still gag-worthy when the kid is brand new. And the meconium, or the black tar-like poop that first comes out of your precious newborn when they’re just days old, is composed of delicious things like bile and hair and mucus, and it takes some real elbow grease to scrub it off their little bums. There’s no fun happening there.

More: 5 Things No One Tells You About Having a Baby

7. "You'll sleep when the baby sleeps"

This is a wonderful piece of advice in theory, but in reality, the way it plays out is quite different. Newborns do sleep a lot (upward of 18 hours a day), but they rarely sleep more than a couple of hours at a time, and a full sleep cycle for a newborn is actually only 20 minutes, so you’re more likely to get baby’s short stints of sleep followed by crying and the need to be fed and changed and rocked back to sleep again. You hardly have time to put them down, let alone get any semblance of restful sleep yourself. Plus, those two- or three-hour stretches of sleep are the perfect times for you to do the 1 million things you need to do like pee, shower, shove some food down your throat, throw in a load of laundry, etc.

Smelly poop and sleepless nights aside, having a baby is an incredible journey. And if you ask me, it's completely worth it — even if everything people tell you is a big, fat lie.

At least, that's what we should be saying, according to a new article from The Cut featuring Lisa Vanderpump in all her glory and crowned with the title "Lisa Vanderpump Is the Royalty America Craves."

There is no arguing, after all, that she rules the Real Housewives — she's starred in all seven seasons of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills — but don't discredit her hard work just because you want to talk about her power to rule.

Vanderpump herself will be quick to tell you that she is a self-made woman.

"I don’t have time to sit around too many painting parties," she explained to The Cut. "I didn’t marry somebody super wealthy where I could sit in bed with a box of chocolates or inherit a shitload of money. I had a good education, but I bought my own apartment when I was 19 years old. My parents did not give me one penny since I left. Not a penny. If I’d married an Onassis or something like that, yeah, I would be sitting around doing sweet fuck-all, but I’m a restaurateur, and I’m a mother, and I’m a wife."

"I do love a sumptuous lifestyle. I mean, I’m not shy to be driving around in some fabulous car, with the roof down, and dogs hanging out the back, and beautiful things... I love that. I love that in my house, I love that," Vanderpump explained.

Most celebrities want their movies to have a lasting impact, but Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson probably had no idea his film San Andreas would actually save lives. This entertaining action flick also taught a 10-year-old boy about chest compressions, which allowed him to save his 2-year-old brother from drowning.

Jacob pulled him out, remained calm, started administering CPR and chest compressions and saved his little brother's life."

Can a Menstrual Blood Test Help Detect Diseases?

Over the course of a lifetime, a woman will lose nearly 16 liters of menstrual blood, which is three times the amount of blood contained in the human body.

Entrepreneur Anna Villarreal’s Boston-based company, LifeStory Health, is seeking to put that lost menstrual blood to better use by working to develop the first noninvasive menstrual blood diagnostic test.

Villarreal was inspired to launch the biotech company after facing her own health scare three-and-a-half years ago.

More: The age you got your period could help predict health problems

“I was having some reproductive issues, and I thought, ‘Why is there nothing that tests this blood source that might drive us closer to an answer given that it’s so proximal to the actual organs that are being affected?’” Villarreal said in an interview with New Theory Podcast.

Her desire to turn her personal experience into something that could help more women prompted Villarreal to pursue her own research into the use of menstrual blood as a diagnostic. She found an overwhelming lack of research in this area, particularly in regard to the use of menstrual blood analysis to detect female-prevalent diseases.

Currently, medical testing is heavily male-dominated. Even with diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart disease that have been proven to affect more women than men, the default subject for medical research continues to be a male patient.

“For decades, physicians have been using the male model when diagnosing coronary heart disease despite clear evidence supporting the need for sex-specific testing,” states Villarreal in an article she wrote for CEOWorld Magazine. “Think about it — women’s bodies are different from men’s in nearly every way, yet we diagnose women as if they are men.”

Villarreal strongly believes that by conducting research into biological identifiers that are exclusive to women, the medical testing gap could be addressed more effectively.

More: What You Should Know About Period Suppression

LifeStory Health is still in the process of conducting preliminary research, running trials and securing patents to guide the creation of future testing products. Clinical experts have already been added to the advisory board to examine what the test might look like in a clinical setting. In an interview with Health Professional Radio, Villarreal mentioned that while most of the research is still confidential, there is “compelling evidence to believe that we might be on the right track.”

According to Villarreal, the menstrual blood being collected is fairly easy to store and study.

“We take menstrual blood on a dry blood spot technology cartridge, which is FDA-approved for the male and then we re-wet it in the lab,” Villarreal told Health Professional Radio. “This is something that has been really available under any atmospheric conditions, and we’ve found that we’ve developed a robust technique to analyze the sample.”

The hope is that the test will be able to provide a more accurate way to detect female-prevalent diseases early on. Much like a prescribed blood draw, a patient presenting certain symptoms might be prescribed the menstrual blood collection kit for further testing and examination.

In the near future, Villarreal hopes to build a website for LifeStory Health that focuses on advocacy and how people can work to improve women’s health care through innovation.

More: What getting your period at an early age means for your health as an adult

As Villarreal sums up in her CEOWorld Magazine article, “I believe that the omission of women as research subjects is putting women’s health at risk and that we need to fuel a conversation that will improve our health care and livelihood.”

Paris Jackson Put Nazis and White Nationalists on Blast at 2017 VMAs

Paris Jackson made certain her first time at the MTV VMAs counted — before presenting the award for best pop song, the 19-year-old made a surprising move for an awards show rookie. Instead of making jokes or reading hammy lines from a teleprompter, Jackson used her time onstage to call out hate groups.

Specifically, Jackson went in on Nazis and white supremacists.

"So, let's leave here tonight remembering that we must show these Nazi, white supremacist jerks in Charlottesville and all over the country ... We have zero tolerance for their violence, their hatred and their discrimination. We must resist."

Taylor Swift's 'Look What You Made Me Do' Video Is Here & It's So Extra

The 2017 MTV VMAs promised many moments worth tuning in for, among them performances by some of music's hottest talent and hosting by Katy Perry. If we're really being honest, though, no moment was more hotly anticipated than the world exclusive premiere of the video for Taylor Swift's controversial new single, "Look What You Made Me Do."

Spoiler alert: it basically broke the internet.

ICYMI, Swift hyped the release of the new single earlier this week when she wiped all of her social media clean. She then began leaving cryptic clues — think snake emoji — hinting at something major to come.

More: Most Memorable MTV VMA Moments Since the First Show in 1984

Mere days later, she revealed the lyric video for "Look What You Made Me Do," along with teaser images from the official vid. To say the single was met with mixed reactions would quite possibly be the understatement of the year.

From being accused of ripping off Beyonce to waging a personal war against Kanye and Kim Kardashian West, Swift bore the brunt of much criticism following the single's debut. However, hardcore Swifties quickly came to the star's defense, pointing out that artists are always evolving.

So, naturally, there was a lot riding on the world premiere of the full-length "Look What You Made Me Do" video. Would Swift outright throw shade in the direction of the Wests? Would she take jabs at Katy Perry, as some suspected?

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift

As it turns out, everything is still up for interpretation. This much we know for sure: the video ushers in a new, darker era of the saccharine country-turned-pop star the world once knew.

More: Katy Perry's Doing a Lot of Apologizing, Even to Taylor Swift

The dark and sharply drawn video starts with Swift crawling out of grave with a tombstone reading, "Here Lies Taylor Swift's Reputation" — a clear nod to the wreckage of the pop star's once spotless image that was deeply tarnished following major fallout with Kanye and Kim last year.

Myriad visages of Swift unfold as the song progresses. We see Swift in a bathtub filled with diamonds. We see her in a Southern gothic-style mansion surrounded by dancers wearing "I love T.S." crop tops. We see her wreck a car as the paparazzi look on.

More: Taylor Swift Refused to Be Victim Blamed at Her Sexual Assault Trial

If there are coded revenge messages embedded in the video, they're muddled at best. What comes through loud and clear, though, is Swift parodying herself. The entire video is a satirical study of her image and the way it is perceived by the media and outside world at large.

Hence, "Reputation."

This is made all the more clear in the video's clever closing scene, which features a row of cliche Swift personas: from the aw-shucks country singer to the version of herself accepting an award and dropping the now-infamous "I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative" line.

The new Taylor Swift may be a tad tone-deaf, but she's self-aware, too.
