PSA: Do not mess with Barron Trump, or you'll have Chelsea Clinton to answer to. (Chelsea is smart as a whip too, so if you go getting into a Twitter war with her, be prepared to lose mightily. You have been warned.)
What's got Clinton so riled up on Barron's behalf? Conservative rag The Daily Caller published a profoundly obnoxious article on the day of the solar eclipse with the headline "It's High Time Barron Trump Starts Dressing Like He's In the White House."

Seriously, Daily Caller? This is the best you can come up with on the day of the most documented celestial event in history? Please put us on your do-not-call list.
The op-ed featured a photo of 11-year-old Barron with his parents deplaning Air Force One over the weekend. Barron was sporting a red tee, tan shorts and basic loafers. Actually shockingly put-together for an 11-year-old on the weekend. Clinton — a mom as well as a brilliant political commentator and philanthropist — got wind of Daily Caller's trash-talking, and she was all, hell no.

As many of us remember, during Clinton's own childhood in the White House, she was the target of all sorts of monstrous commentary, notably from conservative bully Rush Limbaugh. The TV host once showed a picture of Socks, the Clintons' White House cat, on his show, and then appallingly asked the audience, “Did you know there’s a White House dog?” while showing a photo of 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton. This horrifying incident makes it clear that Clinton does indeed know — far too well — how traumatic it is to be a child who's bullied by adults in power.
Clinton has made it clear that she never wants another White House kid to endure the brutalization she did. She took to Twitter to call foul on Barron's behalf.
Chelsea Clinton tweet
"It's high time the media & everyone leave Barron Trump alone & let him have the private childhood he deserves," she tweeted on Monday night.
We admire Clinton and her amazing ability to rise above all of the crap she's had to deal with — during her childhood and during the 2016 election — and we're impressed as ever at her rejection of any cheap shots at the Trump family.
It's not the first time she's come to the current first son's defense, either; when the media and regular snarky folks on Twitter alike tore apart Barron's expression and behavior at his dad's inauguration, Clinton immediately jumped into the fray, dukes up, tweeting, "Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does — to be a kid. Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids." Nailed. It.

So let's let kids — regardless of their parents' political stature — be kids, shall we? Apparently, Daily Caller entertainment reporter Ford Springer was unwilling to allow such frivolity. Springer's article didn't hold back in gushing over Barron's parents' weekend ensembles ("fine tailored suit," "elegant [and] jaw-dropping" dress), but Springer seemed personally offended by Barron, writing, "The youngest Trump doesn't have any responsibilities as the president's son, but the least he could do is dress the part when he steps out in public."
Perhaps Springer would like to offer his services as a stylist to the Trump family. I would love to cover that.
In the end, though, we were relieved to see social media users from the entire political spectrum speaking out against Springer's nasty op-ed. Many described the piece as "mean-spirited" and "shameful."
Meanwhile, Barron's mom, Melania Trump, thanked Clinton on Twitter for sticking up for her boy.
Melania Thanks Chelsea
This was an interesting twist, as Trump's first lady platform has so far highlighted cyberbullying. During a campaign speech for her husband in Berwyn, PA, Melania said, "Our culture has gotten too mean and too rough, especially to children and teenagers...We have to find a better way to talk to each other, to disagree with each other, to respect each other."
It seems like these two moms — Clinton and Trump — have found a way to do just that in spite of their massive political divide. If only Congress would take note.
